MABS MURCIA, Mar Menor Cancer charity centre opened the doors to their new premises on Wednesday, February 26th, 2014. Their new centre is a converted chalet located on the corner of Urbanization Foque, No.1, Calle Cabo de Cresus, San Javier. It is situated on the main road that

runs between San Javier town centre and Santiago de la Ribera, and is just off the Roundabout with Aldi is one side and Taray the other, just a few metres from the later.

More than one hundred supporters, volunteers and clients attended the open day to see the new facility for themselves and meet founder Jacqueline Phillips MBE, President of MABS Cancer Sup-

port Group, who helped cut the ribbon alongside Area Coordinator Janet Bell and Maria Angeles Martinez, Principal of the San Javier School of Languages who was officially in charge of the scissors.

Jacqi was diagnosed with cancer in 1998. Her treatment meant husband Bernard going on daily trips from their home in Javea to the hospital in Valencia.

Torrevieja’s 31st Half Marathon IURII VYKHOPEN a Ukrainian athlete from Torrevieja’s Athletics Club was first past the post and crowned champion of Sunday morning’s Half Marathon, finishing in a time of 1:07:28.

by Keith Nicol In the women section, Petra Marie Skiold, from the Veterans A, posted a time of 1:22:58 with the winner of the 10 kilometres race coming from Alicante; Alejandro Gómez Espinosa the winner with a time of 00:35:43.

The race, along Torrevieja’s seafront, attracted thousands of spectators on a beautiful warm and sunny, Sunday morning.

This year’s Half Marathon “City of Torrevieja”, was organized by Business Educanova of Alicante and attracted 895 runners plus three handicapped participants in adapted racing wheelchairs. Participants came

from many places, mainly in the province of Alicante. Among the novelties this year, that caused a mini sensation among runners, was all runners receiving a participation medal, personalized with their name and time.

The event was run in an excellent atmosphere of good humour and companionship, with fun runners competing in costumes, some with young family in pushchairs and others taking their pet dogs for a very long walk. This year’s successful event also cost less to organise and run than former events and it seems that a model will be in put in place for later editions.

Low magnitude earthquake along the coast ON WEDNESDAY at 4.13pm, a small earthquake was felt in Torrevieja. According to the National Geographic Institute, the quake had a magnitude of 3.2 degrees on the Richter scale and the epicenter was situated just off the coast of Alicante, close to Santa Pola. However, not everyone noticed it with local testimonies from local residents noting that they noticed only a slight tremor, felt in all areas along the coast. However, the earthquake did not cause any material or personal damage/ The quake was felt in Rojales, Los Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja and San Fulgencio. This area is one of high seismic activity and it is normal to occasionally produce earthquakes of this magnitude, which help release energy by reducing the risk of earthquakes of a higher magnitude, that should they occur would be much more harmful.

Murcia rank bottom for new mortgages

Councillor resigns over terrorist slurs

by Keith Nicol NEW MORTGAGES fell by 35.3% in Murcia during 2013 compared to 2012 where last year banks granted loans for 5,414 home sales in the region. According to data released on Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), in December the number of new mortgages granted stood at 305, equating to a drop of 9.2% less than a month earlier.

But Murcia was not alone as all of Spain’s communities featured negative annual rates in the number of mortgages on homes. The largest decreases were recorded in Murcia (-35.3%), Basque Country (-34.6%) and Castilla-La Mancha (-34.4%). The least negative rates occurred in La Rioja (-6.6%), Aragón (15.4%) and Madrid (-20.5%).

91.8% of the mortgages in December used a variable rate, compared to 8.2% fixed rate. The Euribor reference rate is the most popular in the creation of variable rate mortgages, particularly for the 86.0% of new contracts. The average interest rate for all mortgages is 4.32% with the average term being for 20 years. The average interest rate for the mortgages on residential property is 4.37%, 1.9%

Register to vote EXPATS QUALIFYING for a vote in the UK under its 15 year rule are being encouraged to register and cast a ballot in May’s European Elections.

The deadline for registration in the UK is Tuesday 6th May – and British citizens can chose to vote here in Spain or in their home country for the 15 years since they were last on an electoral register.

Britain has been criticised for limiting the right to vote to expats and campaigners fighting for all expats to have a voice believe it is vital everyone takes part in elections.

Margaret Hales MBE, a Costa Blanca member of the Vote For Expat Brits pressure group, hopes people will be ready to vote in the European elections – and the next UK General Election and the promised referendum on EU membership.

Nearly 5.5 million Brits live abroad but by the end of 2012 only 20,000 were registered to vote.

Margaret, who lives in Benitachell, said registration was by computer and registering was an important part of the democratic system “and it is no more difficult than ordering something from Amazon.”

She added: “May is the month for European Elections. Whether you are registered to vote here or in the UK, make sure you do vote. All elections are important. This one will determine who are the MEPs representing us, when you cast your vote remember that not all candidates want Britain to remain within the EU and they are not interested in the Brits living abroad.

“Our life here in Spain is courtesy of both Britain and Spain being members of the EU. Voting is an essential part of a civilised society and a great responsibility on each of us.”

New clamp down on noise pollution THIS WEEK the Policia Local announced new audio controls through sound level meters for pubs, clubs, discos and restaurants, in regards to their nightly entertainment.

ter of the local police, announced that the Torrevieja intends to ensure that by Easter all establishments offering live music, entertainment, and nightlife will have their music levels checked to ensure they are not breaking the law. Those that are, will have their systems turned off and face losing their licence for entertainment.

that the Town Hall and Policia Local have received regular complaints from both local residents and other establishments, without naming any particular example, but noted that the City has had to take action against several premises on Avda de la Habaneras over the years, who are making life difficult for the neighbours who live just above them.

Policia Local are now carrying out thorough checks using new and more sophisti-

cated sound equipment, especially targeting around fifty such establishments that have a sound limiter in place. These devices have recently been revised, as they were first installed in 2012. Police have already inspected twenty local audio limiters, which have been sealed to ensure proper operation. It is expected that the remaining 30 devices can be updated in the coming weeks leading up to Easter.

Secretary of State thanks fraud detectives

by Jack Troughton IAIN DUNCAN Smith, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, visited Madrid to thank the Benefit Fraud investigation team for all its hard work in helping catch out cheats.

The politician met the team at the British Embassy and pledged his continued support in bringing fraudsters to justice – more allegations of benefit fraud are received in Spain than any other country.

And British criminals stealing from the system have placed Spain at the top of a league of shame for ‘Abroad Fraud’. Fraudulent claims for Pension Credit and Income Support are the most common benefits investigated for abuse.

He heard how the team has investigated more than 1,200 cases and recovered nearly £5 million of UK taxpayers’ money.

The Secretary of State’s visit coincided with another successful prosecution as 61year-old Nigel Hadley, of Pembroke Dock, West Wales, narrowly escaped prison but has been ordered to sell his only asset – a Spanish property worth £90,000.

Hadley moved to Marbella in 2000 after his marriage broke down and bought the property. He returned to the UK in 2011 and claimed employment support allowance, housing benefit, and council tax benefit – failing to reveal his Marbella home.

EU COMMISSION Vice-President Viviane Reding inaugurated the recently restored historical complex of the Sant-Pau Hospital in Barcelona on Monday. She was accompanied by the President of the Catalan Autonomous Government, Artur Mas; Spanish Minister for Internal Development Ana Pastor; Barcelona Mayor Xavier Trias and the Archbishop of Barcelona Lluís Martínez Sistach. Half of the €22.5 million used for the restoration of the main pavilion of the UNESCO World Heritage Site came from EU funds. Speaking at a press conference prior to the inauguration Reding called on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to negotiate in order to keep Catalonia in Spain. “There must be a solution,” said Reding, who has long been an advocate of a united Spain, pointing out that should Catalonia achieve independence it would have to negotiate its entry into Europe. “…the trend is for unification, not separation.”

He added: “I would urge British residents who suspect someone of committing benefit fraud to call the hotline in Spain. They can help us to insure that UK taxpayers’ money is going to those who need it most.”

Police accuse court video suspect POLICE HAVE accused an attorney of video- ing the Infanta Cristina while she was being interviewed in court. An investigation has been carried out to determine who was in the court at the time the video was taken along with a detailed reconstruction to ascertain who was standing where and whether they had an opportunity to film the Infanta while she was being questioned. The court has yet to bring charges against the individual suspected of being responsible for the distribution of the illegal footage.

Where there’s a dog there’s a buck FEAR THE worst if your dog suddenly goes missing in Murcia. Over the last year, local canine charities have tried to gain access to a local municipal dog pound to rescue abandoned and lost dogs but often they are too late.

by Keith Nicol THE DOG pound in question apparently specialises in sanitation and fertiliser products and one local charity is doing their best to help save the lives of dozens of dogs in the region.

The organisation ‘ACTIN’ tried to obtain a meeting with the Pound in July 2013 but their request was ignored. They offered to help re-home and care for dogs at the end of 2013 but were told that it was against their company policy. Over the last six months, ACTIN and other Associations have received evidence and witness accounts outlining a number of sad and shocking facts that surround the activities of the Pound. Finally, having being blocked and refused access to the Pound, ACTIN decided to try and expose the animal cruelty through the law courts and the case in now ongoing.

Some of the shocking facts include the fact that the Pound does not have any officially recognised credentials, expertise, or apparently any interest in animal welfare possibly because dead dogs can be recycled for cash. The company has contracts with at least eight municipalities, from as far as over 100 kilometres away.

The list goes on and on, with the most disturbing facts being that often family pets can be put to sleep or destroyed within hours of being picked up on the streets. Recently, it was alledged a captured dog died on the way to the pound from affixation after being left locked up in the back of their van, without any fresh air or air conditioning for almost eight hours. There are many complaints about

Many associations have tried to help but were subsequently banned for complaining. You can also help ACTIN by donating toward the dogs they have rescued from there, who they now have in residence. The boarding fees are a huge drain on resources and they rely totally on donations.

Over the past six months, vet bills topped 5,000 euros, 12 dogs had to be put to sleep but they have nursed 30 dogs back to health, who are now well and waiting for adoptions.

Digging for criminal treasure

by Jack Troughton BRITAIN AND Spain have launched a new initiative to trace, freeze and confiscate the proceeds of serious and organised crime – depriving criminals of their loot.

Top level talks were held in Madrid this week between Home Office Minister Karen Bradley, responsible for fighting organised crime, and Spanish security minister Francisco Martinez Vazquez to discuss working more closely in recovering the financial assets of fugitive criminals.

Criminals move assets overseas to make it harder for law enforcement agencies to reach them and more UK proceeds of crime are thought to be stashed in Spain than any other EU country. It is believed organised crime costs the British economy more than £24 billion a year.

The importance of strengthening the bilateral law enforcement relationship was underlined by the UK minister making her first trip abroad for the talks.

Both governments have agreed to make every effort to assist in the recovery of criminal assets found in their countries and experts discussed how to improve the success of confiscation cases in their respective countries.

The aim is to bring offenders to justice and deprive them of the proceeds of crime – preventing both countries being seen as a safe haven for criminal assets.

And to create better collaboration, an asset recovery specialist from the crown Prosecution Service will be posted to Spain and a Spanish liaison magistrate will be based in Britain.

Cooperation between the two allies has already seen 58 out of 76 fugitives named in Operation Captura arrested and brought to justice

since its launch in 2006 by the National Crime Agency and the UK Crimestoppers charity.

The European Arrest Warrant has also made it easier for criminals fleeing abroad to be returned to their home country. Between April 2009 and April last year 130 fugitives were returned to the UK from Spain, while Britain has extradited a number of terror suspects back to Spain. In a statement at the conclusion of the talks, the ministers said: “Excellent cooperation between our two countries has led to the arrest in the last five years of over three-quarters of Britain’s most wanted

in Spain and sent a clear message: there is no hiding place for criminal on the run.

“Both countries are determined to do even more to tackle the corrosive impact of serious and organised crime and insure crime does not pay.” Both countries are committed to working together to reduce levels of serious and organised crime and seizing criminal assets.

The ministers said Spain welcomed Britain’s decision to rejoin a legal framework recognising confiscation orders, strengthening future moves to recover the proceeds of crime stashed abroad.

Three athletes suspended for Nazi salute The photo circulated on Twitter

PITCHERS DANIEL Martínez, José Carlos Tobalina and Lorenzo Hernandez have been suspended from training for two weeks at the High Performance Centre in Leon, North Western Spain, following the release of a photograph showing them displaying a Nazi salute during a social celebration with other athletes. The Sports Council took the decision to suspend the three as a preliminary measure pending further enquiry when photographs of the salute appeared on Twitter. Gerardo Cebrian, spokesman for the RFEA, said it was suspected that the prank was in no way intentionally vicious but added that such actions must nonetheless be acknowledged as irresponsible and unacceptable.

Fugitive’s luck runs out

FUGITIVE DRUGS baron David Mather faces an 18 year jail sentence after being netted close to Spain’s border with Gibraltar in a joint operation between British and Spanish police.

by Jack Troughton THE 57-year-old named as one of the “unlucky 13’ by Crimestoppers in the latest round of Operation Captura, an appeal to help trace criminals thought to have fled to Spain.

Mather, from Manchester, was arrested by armed police as he travelled in a car through La Linea and his arrest last Friday means 58 from 76 of the charity’s ‘most wanted’ have now been snared.

He was convicted in his absence in January last year of conspiracy to import heroin and was sentenced to 18 years. The National Crime Agency (NCA) was granted a European Arrest Warrant in August.

In May 2010 a lorry was stopped at Humber sea terminal. Within a bumper of the vehicle there were 32 wrapped packages of heroin with a value of £500,000.

Mather was the long term user of the lorry and his freight company was involved in the logistics and movement of the vehicle. Detectives believe it had been used on a number of previous occasions to smuggle similar amounts of drugs into the UK. FAKE And Hank Cole, head of international operations for the NCA, said: “This arrest is a result of close working with the Spanish authorities. Mather was using false identity documents to try and evade capture but we

were able to track him down.

“It demonstrates the NCA and its partners have the capability to pursue fugitives wherever they are in the world.”

Lord Ashcroft, founder and chairman of Crimestoppers, added: “The charity is obviously delighted by this latest arrest as this is the second Operation Captura subject to have been located since the turn of the year – which is a great result.

“David Mather has been convicted in his absence and will now have to come back to the UK to serve his sentence.”

Porny Politician caught in the act MIGUEL ANGEL Revilla, 71-year-old former President of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria, was unknowingly photographed while ogling a guitar-playing nude beauty in ‘Interviu’ magazine during a regional parliamentary meeting on Monday. The magazine was secreted inside a folder during a debating session but naughty old Revilla was spotted by photographer Andres Fernandez from the gallery. The photo was uploaded to Twitter and quickly went viral attracting a number of comments that slammed the politician for perving on public funds! Revilla, however, responded coolly: “I was merely flicking through the pages to find a specific article about the fate of former Caja Madrid bank President Miguel Blesa,” he said.

It’s about time NOW THAT we are fully into 2014 it is amazing to think how quickly time passes and to be hearing about the proposed expansion of the N332.

It is about time is all I can say. In fact it was about time ten years ago! Traffic congestion on the N332 in the summer is a nightmare. The N332 near Torrevieja is like a massive parking lot in the summer. Cars stacked one on top of another seems the only means to reduce traffic congestion.

The policy along the coast now seems to be: ‘hastily build as many urbanisations as possible and think about the infrastructure consequences and problems later’.

The powers that be are spreading the word that they can see a continuous dual carriageway stretching all the way down the coast. Perhaps their eyesight is not so good - it seems they are suffering from dual vision!

Perhaps they are looking into one of those weird mirrors that distort the image of the person looking at it, or using a very high powered telescope to see how the N332 nightmare can be fixed.

The N332 bypassing Torrevieja was built about 40 years ago, with overpasses only wide enough for two lanes of traffic. To see how that problem may be corrected is hard to imagine.

Will the proposed expansion of the N332 be nothing more than a New Year’s resolution that is quickly forgotten or actually initiated? We shall see.

Is this another scam?

A FRIEND of ours had a man call at her house, showing her an Iberdrola card with his name and a website. He then told her that her electricity contract was “out of date,” mentioning her late husband’s name, asking her to show him the contract, which she did not do.

I looked up the website on the card: it did not exist nor was the company’s name in either phone book. I am not sure whether this is another scam, but it seems strange as I would assume Iberdrola would contact by mail.

We have the same problem in Gran Alacant: there are around 60 gypsies parked up and they have been for the past three to four months on a car park near the beaches.

Two things come to my mind with these gypsies: Where do they get their clean water from for filling their water tanks? I don’t think they buy five-litre bottles from Lidl’s, nor do they use sea water as the salt would corrode the tanks.

And also, where do they dump their waste water/effluence?

I agree totally with Mrs Parrish that the local councils are missing a big trick here in that they could charge for using the car parks and also supply facilities for clean water collection and waste deposit (legally).

Typical Spain though: chase unimportant matters with a passion but forget the rest.

Unbelievable service

THIS IS for anyone English who might be nervous of going into hospital in the Cartagena region. I am an 84-year-old man with a holiday home at Portman. I was recently rushed into Santa Lucia Hospital in Cartagena with a breathing problem. The ambulance was brilliant, putting me on oxygen straight away. The moment I got there I was seen by a lady doctor and four nurses for 45 minutes. I was taken to a ward to be monitored but my breathing discomfort developed into pneumonia and I stayed for two weeks. My wife was able to stay with me. I was very nervous to come home as I had been on oxygen the whole time I was there but 10 minutes after arriving home a large oxygen machine was delivered and my wife was given instructions how to operate it. And within the big oxygen unit was another big cylinder in case of a power cut. I am due to go back to the hospital in 10 days’ time to be assessed: the service has just been unbelievable.

Domingo Sanchez, films with David Bisbal TORREVIEJA DANCER Domingo Sánchez has just finished working with popular singing star David Bisbal on his latest video.

by Keith Nicol Domingo is probably best known locally for his music video “Flamenco in Torrevieja”, being a special guest on “Moonwalker: The Show” and because he choreographed and danced the main Michael Jackson role of “Thriller”, before more than 1,500 people at Halloween, plus the flash-mob the “I Zombie March”.

Domingo has just finished filming in Barcelona, where he features strongly in the environmental film “You and I” with the artist David Bisbal, under the direction of Kike Maillo, who won two Goya awards plus young Spanish actress Maria Valverde, who has also won a Goya.

Domingo was one of the 18 males chosen after a massive casting event and moved to Barcelona in late January for the shoot with the Almeria artist. “It was quite an experi- Domingo Sánchez ence shooting the music video, but I also had to repeat many times the same scene, with to get itjust right, not forgetting that the star of the video is Bisbal, not me” he added David with a glint in his eye. The new song by David Bisbal, will be released on 18th March.

Ruth Lorenzo wins chance at Eurovision FORMER X-FACTOR star Ruth Lorenzo is to represent Spain in Copenhagen at Eurovision 2014. Spain’s entry was chosen from among five other hopefuls at a show held in Barcelona to select the nation’s favourite to sing ‘Dancing in the Rain’ which topped the Spanish charts earlier in the week. The winning singer was chosen by 50% televote and 50% expert jury voting.

The jury consisted of three of Spain’s top music stars: Mónica Naranjo, David Bustamante and Merche.

Paco de Lucia dies

PACO DE LUCIA, the maestro guitarist who helped bring Flamenco to a global audience, has died in Mexico after suffering a heart attack at 66, it was announced on Wednesday. Widely known as ‘Paco’, Francisco Sanchez Gomez de Lucia modernised the Spanish ‘gypsy style’, introducing Jazz and Bossa Nova influences over a career that spanned several decades. At only 12 he played Flamenco in intimate, smoky venues, recording his first album by the age of 18. In 2004, he was awarded Spain’s prestigious Asturias Prize for Art, named as the ‘most universal of all Flamenco artists’. The town of Toledo has declared an official mourning period in response to the loss of a truly great artist and a global ambassador for Spanish culture.

Bronson comes home

by Patricia Thompson ONE OF the Rojales Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s most popular horses is home again after a life-saving operation.

Bronson was suddenly taken very ill three weeks ago and rushed to the Centro Policlinico Veterinario Raspeig (Alicante Horse Hospital) in a desperate bid to save his life.

Sue Weeding explains: “Rod and I were up most of the night with Bronson. We thought he had severe colic so kept him on his feet, walking him constantly. When it became obvious that Bronson was not improving we called in our fantastic vet Dorothea who responded within minutes. Poor Bronson, now becoming out of control through pain, was sedated enough to transfer him to the Alicante Horse Hospital where vet Salvador was waiting.

A large enterolite, almost 15 centimetres long, was extracted from Bronson’s small colon: this is caused when a horse eats something like a piece of plastic or a foreign body which then sticks in the intestine. This en-

terolite had moved to the end of Bronson’s colon causing a complete blockage.

The team at EHCRC is indebted to Salvador and his surgeons at the Alicante Horse Hospital for saving Bronson’s life. And as the EHRCR is a fully registered Spanish charity they discounted the final bill as a gesture of their support. Special thanks go to Kate Jensen, a truly dear friend and supporter, for her generous offer of 3,000€ towards the cost of Bronson’s operation and post-operative treatment. He is now recuperating in his stable.

15-year-old Bronson, named for Charles Bronson of Street Fighter fame for his determined fight for survival, was found in 2010 at the side of the road in Almoradi, with massive head wounds caused by an attack with a large metal object. He had escaped his assailant but was horribly injured and traumatised.

His tremendous will to live has undoubtedly helped him survive this further ordeal.

Schumacher involved in road accident in Spain

IT HAS emerged that prior to his skiing accident in December last year Michael Schumacher was involved in a road accident in Seville on 17th November which is still being investigated by the Spanish courts. The Formula I racing legend allegedly failed to give way at a roundabout while driving a hired Audi A4 and knocked down a motorcyclist.

The case is not expected to go to trial as Schumacher’s insurer has agreed to pay compensation.

If discovered early enough, most skin cancers can be quickly diagnosed and preventive measures or minor surgery is often all that is needed. However, left unattended, it can be a hidden killer.

In December 2013, former professional Spanish Tennis player, Felix Mantilla came to the area to promote his Skin Cancer Foundation and receive a cheque from the fundraising efforts of the Ladybirds. Years of playing tennis in the sun gave him skin cancer, but he fully recovered and set up his own charity to help sufferers. With so many people partaking in outdoor events such as golf, petanca, bowling, sailing, swimming, tennis or even long walks with the dog, all can put you at risk from the sun.

The good news is that Juan Araujo and Lynda Gibson, formally the owner of Medasthetics, are offering a free monthly clinic at their new Slim Fit clinic next door at Punta Prima. MORE THAN forty bikers belonging to the ‘Costa Blanca Motorcycle Club’, visited the facilities of the Association of Relatives and Friends of Alzheimer Torrevieja, better known as AFA Torrevieja. Diego Ramerez award winner Matilde Sanchez, president of the organization, showed club members around the purpose built facility, which offers day care for sufferers of dementia and Alzheimer’s, and a welcome rest or time for work and other commitments for their careers and families. The group of

bikers, who include members from several countries, including England, Scotland, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, support the club through fundraising and awareness campaigns and made a generous donation to AFA during their visit.

LOCAL GOLFER Mick Reeves - known as Mick the Grip - recently completed a charity hair cut to raise money for Torrevieja Charity Reach Out. ‘Helping the Homeless and Needy’, Reach Out try to help anyone in need, irrespective of race, creed or status, by providing basic food, clothes and bed linen as well as household items and furniture, giving support in every way they can

to people in need. Entirely voluntary, 100% of all donations to Reach Out benefit the homeless and poor. They are always in need of items for babies and children such as clothes, toys, shoes, baby food, baby toiletries… in fact virtually anything for children of all ages. Reach Out is in desperate need of cash to purchase a van to enable them to collect larger items and also assist with

deliveries. So to help raise some dosh Mick the Grip chose to have his hair cut with the aim of raising 500€ but such was local support that amount swiftly rose to 1,975€! THIS SOBRIQUET is, I gather, an amalgam of nerd and geek with an added covering of pink fluffy anorak. I hold my hands up when it comes to apps; I am a total app anorak. And I’ve been driving her mad with my latest one.

Picture the scene: a rather large and post-Christmas-obese Watts constantly worrying about the nerd, sorry the need, to slim down and health-up a bit for springtime (should it ever come to the UK!). Walking, according to Stephen Fry, is the way to go – and lots of it - he, apparently, shed stones and stones. Walking burns calories, so walking we must go!

Anyway, my son-in-law recommended an app called MapMyWalk which records your perambulations in precise detail. So, for the last few weeks I’ve been MappingMyWalk every single solitary step; almost to ridiculous proportions. And, I think, that me recording the walk from the car park into the Pretty Pigs was that which produced Mandy’s ire and above comment. “But,” I pleaded, “I need to keep a record of my step-age. It all adds to calorific burn…” She shrugged and walked ahead of her screen-tapping Neek.

MapMyWalk, is compelling: it tracks where you’ve been; how far you’ve been; how many calories you’ve burned; how fast you’ve been moving and it provides a pretty little map for you to cut out and keep afterwards.

Meanwhile back at the Pretty Pigs I down my beer and head, fag in hand, for the beer garden. “You know what Watts?” grins Manders, as she tracks my path to the door, “it’s a pity there isn’t a StopMySmoking app.

Perhaps you’d get as compulsive with that; you might even pack up.” I tell her to spend her time wisely, whilst I’m away, looking for one. And blow me down, when I returned she’d found about fifty of the bloody things!

Did you know folks, that March 12 is non-smoking day? Yup, it is and so by downloading QuitControl you might well be on your non-smoking way by then. For

a Neek like me already hooked on MapMyWalk this could be the answer. I must tell Sheenagh, my pal in La Nucia all about it…

A real test for Spanish cricket

by Keith Nicol THE DESERT Springs Resort (close to Vera) hosted the inaugural Tom Maynard Trust Academy from 13th to 21st February, featuring 11 elite young cricketers from eight of the professional counties who used the new grass net practice facilities for the very first time.

Matthew Maynard (former England and Glamorgan cricketer) headed the coaching staff supported by world cup winning former England wicket keeper Paul Nixon; World Cup Winning Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey; Former England, Middlesex and Glamorgan star Jamie Dalrymple and former England Physio Dean Conway. All helped offer a fantastic mix of coaching and education to this group of highly talented young cricketers.

To end their time in Spain on Friday 21st February the group travelled to LA Manga Club to play a 40-over match against a team selected from the Spanish ECCL league. A mix of Spanish National side players and players aspiring to make the squad were selected from LA Manga CC, Alfas CC and Levante

CC for the game which was hoped would showcase the development of cricket in Spain.

This game was a real test for the Spanish side and the team’s performance impressed their UK guests who commented on how much they enjoyed the challenge. There was also great ground support from the surrounding villages with tea, cake and some stronger beverages as the afternoon progressed.

The event was an overall resounding success. Spain now has a fantastic new facility at Desert Springs to attract cricketers of all levels requiring grass pitch practice, and has de-

veloped a great relationship with the Tom Maynard Trust, a benefactor of the La Manga Club 20/20 event at the end of the 2014 season. A return for the Academy has already been provisionally booked for 2015.

The national website for cricket www.cricketspain.es also featured live scoring for the first time and as we watch the rain falling in the UK, we move into the start of the cricket season in Spain with blue skies and the hope that interest in the game continues to grow with a continued effort to develop cricket in schools and at junior level.

MOVE: Men of Vision Espana MOVE is an exciting, interdenominational Christian men’s organisation that held its first conference in Puerto Mazarrón on the Costa Calida in 2007, headed by Richard Hewes, who is a frequent visitor with a great affection for the area and its people. For many years he has wanted to see an organisation specifically for Christian men in this beautiful part of Spain.

The conferences seem to get better and better and last year’s truly inspired many men. This year, 2014, the conference will be held on Saturday 8th March at the Conference Centre in Pilar De Horadada, just 15 minutes from San Javier airport.

The main speaker this year will be Andrew Toogood, Senior Pastor of Exchange Church in the heart of Belfast.

St George and the Ambassador

by Jack Troughton THE BRITISH Ambassador to Spain has become the patron of the Royal Society of St George Costa Blanca Branch, it was announced on Saturday.

Chairman Wing Commander Bob Hunt MBE told 41 society members at the Annual General Meeting that Mr Simon Manley GMC had accepted the invitation to become Branch Patron.

He said the diplomat had replied he was “honoured and delighted” to accept the role – but warned his duties in Madrid might make it difficult to attend regular functions.

Bob welcomed everyone to the meeting at the Cumbre del Sol Restaurant – especially seven new members. He said 2013 had been a very active 12 months for

the branch and for the first time in several years there had been a “significant” increase in membership.

And he said the three main social events of last year organised by the committee – the St George’s Day Banquet, Her Majesty’s Official Birthday lunch, and the Autumn Dinner and Dance – were well attended and enjoyed by members and guests.

Bob said a full programme of activities was being planned for the coming year and added: “The increase in membership, coupled with very strong attendances at the society’s social events in 2013, indicates that there remains a very strong interest in keeping alive the true spirit of being English in this part of Spain.”

The next function on the Society’s calendar is the celebration of St George’s Day on Friday 25th April at the Carrasco Banqueting Rooms in Javea.

Must you make a resident tax declaration?

DO YOU enjoy Sudoku? Are you one of those people whose coffee table is piled high with completed, half completed and ready to complete puzzle books?

WORKING WITH numbers is absorbing; it can also be frustrating at times. When you are locked in battle with a particularly difficult Sudoku grid, they have the upper hand. At other times, numbers can be open to misinterpretation, twisted and cajoled into telling whatever tale you wish.

What has this to do with who should make a resident tax declaration? This is one of those areas where numbers have simply added to the confusion rather than clarifying it. The issue of who should present a resident tax declaration in Spain has been rather confused over the years by the publication of the figure 22,000€ as a threshold.

Some people have been led to believe that if your income is less than this you do not have to make a declaration. This is not the case. You are only exempt from paying the 22,000€ figure if you are employed by only one employer and are already paying Spanish withholding tax as you earn - a situation that applies

to very few expats.

So, to make sure that we get the numbers correct, this grid shows who must and who need not present a resident tax declaration: RESIDENTS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AN ANNUAL TAX DECLARATION Pensioners

Receiving one or more pensions from abroad that total more than 11,200€ a year*

Early retirees

With an income through: * Interest of more than 1,600€ a year * Renting of 1,000€ or more a year

As you will see from this table, this means that most people resident in Spain will have to complete a resident tax declaration.

There are advantages to doing this. Presenting annual tax declarations makes obtaining a fiscal residency certificate much easier. The fiscal residency certificate is what is needed in the case of claiming residency for inheritance purposes. You also require one to ensure that there is no 3% retention if you sell your Spanish property as a Spanish tax resident.

Under Spanish Law, who inherits when there is no Will?

GOOD AFTERNOON: I am British, and have lived in Spain for some years. I hear that the Spanish inheritance law is different from that in the UK. I would like know the consequences of dying without a Will under Spanish Law. It is true that the Spanish government would keep all assets?

THANK YOU for your question: In the event of there being no Spanish Will, in principle, the law applying to the inheritance would be the national law of the deceased, according to Article 9 of the Spanish Civil Code.

This matter is controversial though, as according to the most recent case-law if you have your domicile and all your real estate properties in Spain, the renvoi from English Law to Spanish could be acceptable, and then the Spanish Law would apply.

If Spanish Law applies and a person dies without a will (intestate), the law foresees a list of beneficiaries, starting from the closest relatives. This is regulated in articles 930 and follows the Spanish civil code, which

we summarise below: If the deceased leaves descendants (children, grandchildren...) and is also married, the spouse will inherit the usufructo (use, live interest) of a third of the estate, and the descendants would inherit the remainder in equal shares.

If the deceased leaves only ascendants (parents or grandparents) and spouse (no descendants), the spouse will inherit the usufructo of 50% of the estate and the parents will inherit the rest. In the absence of parents, the beneficiaries will be the immediate ascendants, grandparents, etc…

In cases where the deceased dies without ascendants or descendants, the spouse inherits, and if there is no spouse, collaterals will inherit: brothers, sisters, nieces,

nephews, etc. Only if there are no collaterals (up to the fourth degree in the collateral line), would the State inherit the estate.

In each case, it needs to be determined if the succession should apply English or Spanish Law. It is always advisable to grant a Spanish Will, to speed the procedures, and in order to avoid additional extra costs for the required documentation that will be need from the country of origin, such as the probate, apostilled, etc.

Managing the electric bill SINCE 2003, the electricity bill has rocketed by almost 70%.

A Spanish family now pays 615€ per year compared to 360€ ten years ago.

Incomes have fallen as a result of the crisis with many seeing their wage drastically reduced so electricity has become a major cost for average Spanish families.

At a time of year when everyone welcomes some pocket-saving advice the National Commission has disseminated some tips on how families might reduce electricity bills.

The first and most obvious piece of advice is to take advantage of off peak rates. Make an effort to reduce your consumption during peak hours – this is no time to be running a dishwasher or washing machine.

Many consumers do not realise that they can pay far less for electricity by being disciplined about the hours in which they use high consumption appliances.

ECONOMY RATES You can also contract an economy rate with your supplier that offers a discounted amount for electricity used at designated times of the day and night. A representative will call to help you assess the best schedule based on your average use – and also explain how the system works and is billed.

Peak hours are 21.5% more expensive. If you consume at least 28% of electricity during cheap hours you can achieve worthwhile savings.

DO THE MATHS Take a tour of your home and make a note of where you might replace standard light bulbs for low energy bulbs that use less power and last longer. And where possible make use of daylight hours to perform tasks that require lighting and heating another room or workshop. Leave blinds up on sunny days to warm up your home.

And check the power consumption amount displayed on appliances that would normally be operated together such as the TV, kitchen lights, computer etc.

Add them all up to assess whether you are paying for a higher capacity than you really need, says the CNMC. If you can save 20€ or so on your average monthly bill the exercise would have been worth it!

Alternatively if you are one of those who prefer the luxury of running the washing machine, computer, TV, toaster, heating, kettle and dish washer all at the same time just be aware of what it is costing you and whether you care!

No tax for low incomes says PSOE THE PSOE is calling for the unemployed and pensioners earning below 16,000€ per annum in tax to be exempt from paying income tax. The move was proposed by the PSOE Deputy Secretary General, Elena Valenciano, speaking in the town of Alaquás on Tuesday, where parents and students were protesting against education cuts.

The socialist leader toured the school’s facilities, which has been forced to use prefabricated classrooms for the last eight years. Valenciano also suggested that the Generalitat Counsillor for Education José Maria Catala should visit the school where “parents, students and teachers are fighting to defend that which belongs to everyone.”

How much of your UK pension is being eaten up by charges?

PENSION CHARGES have risen by up to 10% in two years amid growing concern over the government’s decision to delay a cap on fees.

PENSIONS MINISTER Steve Webb announced last month that he is delaying a cap on fees charged by pension fund managers until April 2015. However, according to official figures the cost of fees on pension schemes administered by employers has risen significantly over the last two years as have those for schemes with less than 100 employees Mr. Webb said that small changes in the fees could make a “huge difference” to pensions because the charges are taken year after year after year.

The cap on pension charges was supposed to be introduced in April. However, after the pensions industry complained that they were not being given enough time to implement the changes it was postponed until April next year. A recent Office of Fair Trading investigation into the £275 billion pensions industry concluded that millions of workers are left short-changed and bewildered by retirement schemes that carry a complex web of up to 18 different hidden fees.

As an expatriate living in Spain you have a unique opportunity to combat these fees and improve the size of your pension pot as a consequence. You should take the opportunity to manage

your pension in a way that allows you to gain tax benefits and improve your future income. This is through transferring your pensions in to a QROPS: this form of pension management allows greater control for the individual and takes away some of the risk associated with maintaining pensions in UK companies where there is already a massive acknowledged pension fund deficit.

This deficit means there will come a point where pension payments are unaffordable by providers and you could end up with a diminished or worthless pension. A QROPS means you can benefit from lower management fees that are absolutely transparent. In addition you can see exactly what is happening to your money and have the reassurance of knowing that you have done something that allows you to take control of your future instead of leaving it to chance..

Herbs in your Spanish garden

NO INLAND or coastal garden in Spain should be without herbs whether you are a resident or absentee gardener. They have so many uses and can be planted in the open, in dedicated herb gardens, in the vegetable garden, in raised beds, on growing tables, in the laundry room, in containers/ window boxes or in terracotta herb barrels.

Apartment as well as villa dwellers can therefore easily grow and benefit from a collection of herbs.

Perennials such as lavenders, rosemary, thymes, sages, chives and bay etc., are naturalised Spanish plants are therefore easily established. Most importantly they are among the most frost and draught resistant plants.

Collections can be developed – for instance there are hundreds of varieties of sage.

Many annual herbs such as basil, parsley, and dill can be raised from seed or purchased as small plants each spring and are reasonably easy to care for in semishaded positions.

Wherever planted they can be regularly trimmed for use in salads, cooked dishes and for healthy infusions. Lamb chops or shanks coated with garlic and freshly chopped rosemary, or fresh basil with pasta and oregano chopped over slices of freshly harvested tomatoes soaked in virgin olive

oil can’t be beaten for taste. Nor can a Poleo Menta made from freshly harvested leaves…

Planted along paths, within mixed flower beds, on a rockery or in a dedicated herb garden their leaves and flowers add perfume to the garden, which in turn attract many species of butterflies.

Herbs can be harvested for hanging in bunches or mixing into potpourris to provide natural aromatherapy effects on the naya or in the house Co-planted on the vegetable plot they can be useful attractors of beneficial insects (rosemary and lavender), in attracting pests away from crops ( sage, dill, fennel and coriander), the basis of natural insecticides ( garlic) and fungicides ( horsetail) and the basis of valuable natural fertilizers (comfrey, borage and nettle).

If we sprain a muscle mountain walking or gardening we find that a rue infusion is a quick-acting gardener’s remedy as is a comfrey poultice.

What other type of garden plants can be of so much benefit for a relatively little outlay!

If you have inherited a mountainside or woodland full of naturally growing herbs you have a head start on others!

plants. Many can be easily propagated at almost any time of the year to increase your number of plants inexpensively or as gifts for friends.

Success requires only fertile, free-draining, gritty, non-clayey soils and potting composts, regular watering of perennials until established and daily summer watering of herbs in containers - and a regular short back and sides to stop them becoming leggy and woody. Some herbs such as mint and the wonderful scarlet-flowered pineapple sage can spread quickly: either plant them where you

are happy for them to expand or plant in large containers sunk into the ground or added to your collection of annual and perennial herbs on the naya or apartment terrace.

‘20 Years a Geezer’…

Will it make it onto the Big Screen?

I OFTEN read about movies that are in the pipeline, some of which I’ve brought to the column hoping they eventually get made, but I’m not sure I have brought any film here before that I hope and pray makes it onto the big screen.

Noel Gallagher has never shied away from speaking his mind, and in that vein talking after the Baftas about a possible movie charting the story of Oasis he said “People have seriously approached me about that, it’s something that’s very strange, but very tempting.”

Oasis made seven albums between ‘94 and 2008 and they all made it to No 1 … ‘95 album ‘What’s The Story … Mornin Glory’ sold 22 million copies … and they produced 8 x No 1 singles. These astonishing record sales apart, the front page sibling rivalry that went on between the two brothers Noel and Liam, and the infamous ‘Battle of Britpop’ between Oasis and Blur in the summer of ‘95, has the potential to turn the film into a biopic classic. It could be argued that these type of movies never tell ‘the whole truth and nothing but the truth’, but when it comes to the Gallagher brothers I have no doubt in my mind that their running battle that goes on to this day will be right up there for us all to see should the project take off for real.

Noel got into cheeky mode saying he thought ‘20 Years a Geezer’ would be a good working title, and he didn’t disappoint when he closed with, “…sometimes, when we’ve had a few drinks, we sit about telling stories and talk about putting them in an Oasis film … but I wouldn’t want it to end on such a bummer! … I’d start at the end and work my way backwards … It’d be a long film but one worth watching, and it’d be a funny film ‘n all.” … That’s it!… I’m getting up a petition.

THE FIRST series of Benidorm went out in 2007 and it was good. Series 2 was just as good… then series 3 started to dip a bit. Joan Collins, Janette Krankie, Rustie Lee and Mick from Brookside were drafted in to help stop Series 6 from sinking, but it looks like it’s going down and I don’t think they’ve got enough lifebelts.

The movie Wolf of Wall Street is up for five Oscars, and is collecting a whole stack of superlatives along the way, but not from a certain New York lawyer Andrew Greene. He claims the character Nicky ‘Rugrat’ Koskoff is based on him, saying he comes across as a “criminal, drug user, and a degenerate who’s devoid of any morality or ethics.” … Good that he recognises himself, mind you.

I brought Mrs Brown’s Boys here recently saying how writer and Mrs Brown (Brendan O’Carroll) refused to temper the ****ing language for US TV. Now the news is that there is to be a cartoon version of the show, so now it’ll be translated into every ****ing language on the planet ... Good bit ‘o stuffing for the US der Brendan.

Nicole Scherzinger has just signed to Sony Music so we will be treated to her singing voice again soon.

She attended Sony’s after Brits party last week looking stunning in her nude-coloured outfit and if that wasn’t enough, sadly she had a wardrobe malfunction and rather a lot of cleavage appeared. Unfased Nicole announced: “I can’t wait to share my music with all of you.” … Cool.

West Side Story sensation in Torry

By Keith Nicol THE FOOTLIGHTS Youth Theatre Company from Calpe delighted a completely sold out house at Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre on Saturday night. The performance of West Side Story was a benefit event for Torrevieja’s charity for the homeless, Reach Out and organised by Torrevieja Costa Lions Club.

Selling out two weeks before show night, Torrevieja was treated to another superb performance by Footlights, utilising an innovative but simple set design and performing well known classics such as “Maria”, “America”, “Somewhere”, “Tonight”, “Song of the Jets”, “I Feel included

Pretty”, “One Hand, One Heart” and “Cool” along with excellent choreography and well performed dance routines.

As is becoming a regular feature, the talented cast performed to sold out audiences in their hometown of Calpe for three nights the previous weekend, and will finish their short run on March 7th at the Teulada-Moraira Auditorium. Next up for the cast is the light hearted musical, the film of which featured the talents of a very young Tommy Steele, “Half a Sixpence”, which they are scheduled to perform in Torrevieja next November. Profits from the evening will be going to Reach Out.

This portents that others are very wrong to have put you in your current position, but it also serves to warn them once and for all that, above all, you are not to be messed with.

With Mars in retrograde and no time like the present there are many things to be done and dusted over the next few weeks. Making a start now when you are reeling from recent negative actions is brave and adamant, showing what you are really made of! IT IS never wrong to ask for something that you need, especially from the highest source. Many feel that this is begging, or an abuse of what Spirit is all about, but sincerely it needn’t be, and you should not have to beg. It all depends on how you ask, since the reply to asking for what you want could very well be a. “No.” However, if you ask for what you deserve then if it is deserved, you should get it. This chain of giving and receiving crosses the World, but the lack of money to join the chain at any level excludes you from the sheer law of attraction that is brought about by financial gain at any level. Hips, knees and bumps-so-easy!

LOOKING AT the relationship between the hips and the knees, it may be clearer to see how problems can start. The muscles and tendons that end on or around the knee originate from attachment to the hip - from the front, the side and the back of the hip.

INJURY AND TREATMENT Any injury from a fall resulting in knocking the hip joint can cause a sprain or sometimes hip dislocation. Chiropractic treatment is often not considered the first port of call: pain or discomfort is reported to the GP or emergency unit. Conventional treatment (pain killers or physiotherapy) can result in an undetected misalignment of the hip.

Chiropractic care at the outset could rectify misalignment to prevent lasting damage. Often physiotherapists are not trained to diagnose or treat early, unlike a chiropractor who uses specific, gentle and precise non-rotational chiropractic massage.

EARLY DIAGNOSIS Always get an accident, fall or joint injury checked out early to avoid problems later. This is especially important for growing children.

ISSUES AFTER CHILDBIRTH During the final stages of labour, a hormone (Relaxin) is released into the pelvis to enable ligaments and tendons to soften, allowing the birth to take place normally. However, a fall or injury as a child or teenager can cause slight misalignment of the pelvis: the ligaments and tendons are no longer of equal length, nor strength, on both sides. As a result, one side is too soft a tendon, the other not soft enough. After the birth, the brain automatically releases another hormone (Ocytoxin) to immediately begin the reversal, tightening up the softened tendons and ligaments to their normal state. A previous injury

can cause this natural process to be disturbed, explaining why some women experience pain in the lower back later.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Masculine and Feminine THIS WEEK I promised we’d go on to something new. We’re going to spend a bit of time looking at nouns, followed later on by adjectives, before we return to the construction of complete sentences using verbs.

Before we do that though, I always think it’s a good idea to summarise where we’re up to, so here are the things we have covered in the first seven lessons of this series. First of all we have learnt some thirty verbs in their infinitive, or basic form. That is the form that we translate as “to ….” and which in Spanish ends in either – ar, -er or –ir. Then we have seen that certain verb forms related to “I” can go in front of these to make a basic sentence structure. quiero (I want); puedo (I can); necesito (I need); voy a (I’m going to); me gusta (I like); prefiero (I prefer) and tengo que (I have to).

We have also looked at three examples where changing these forms slightly gives us a “you” sentence – vas a (you are going to); quieres (you want); tienes que (you have to).

In addition we have learnt the link words pero, (but) and para (in order to), which allow us to extend our sentences to make them more complete and meaningful.

Now to today’s business– nouns. The word “noun” simply means the name of something, so it refers to people and things like “man” and “table” and also ideas and feelings

like “democracy” and “happiness”. We also have what we call “proper nouns” which are specific names like “Mary” or “England”. Proper nouns always start with a capital letter in English and Spanish: “María”, “Inglaterra”.

The way the English language is structured it is not important at all whether a noun refers to a male or a female.

We simply have different words (man, woman, stallion, mare etc.) whilst everything else is simply a neutral object (table, car, chair, paper).

In Spanish every noun is considered to be either masculine or feminine, so just as hombre (man) and mujer (woman) are masculine and feminine, so words for objects are too: mesa (table – feminine); coche (car – masculine); silla (chair – feminine); papel (paper – masculine).

Now it is very important for us to realise that the concept of “masculine” and “feminine” does not relate to the thing itself but to the word. In other words we shouldn’t be thinking about why a table is considered feminine and a car is considered masculine, we simply need to accept that the word mesa is a feminine word and coche is a masculine word.

To illustrate this point, here are some examples: vestido (dress – masculine), camisa (shirt – feminine), bolsa (general word for “bag” - feminine), bolso (handbag – masculine).

Even more interesting persona (person – feminine) and víctima (victim – feminine); in all these examples and many more the gender of the word bears no relation to the gender identification of the object or person.

So, two questions need answering before we continue talking about this matter next week. Firstly, how do we know when a word is masculine or feminine? and secondly, why is it important?

In answer to the first question, it is very common for masculine words to end in the letter “o” and feminine words to end in the letter “a”, although this is not always the case.

There are some exceptions that are the other way round, and also many words that end in different letters. However, it is quite a good indicator to start with. Then there are certain characteristic endings. Two of the most common examples are words that end in –dad and –ción which are always feminine.

Now the second question – Why is it important? To be honest at the early stages of language learning, when you only know a few words and are getting simple messages across to people (like how many beers you want), then it really doesn’t matter very much at all. However, as you progress with the language you start to discover that this masculine/feminine divide runs right through the language and affects a lot of other words in a sentence. So to learn to speak correct Spanish we have to get to grips with the idea.

MABS new home in Murcia Continued from front page In 1999, having met with other sufferers, Jacqi and four others founded MABS, the Marina Alta Breast Cancer Support Group and to date they have helped thousands of sufferers, family and friends, of all nationalities, the youngest being two and the oldest 94.

Cancer is totally non discriminatory. It can strike anyone of us, at any time, for no obvious reason and all of us have family or fiends who have suffered of died from the disease. MABS offer support and help for patients, their families and those close to them, by phone 24 hours a day, at their drop in centres and with home visits if needed.

All their volunteers have been touched by cancer themselves so can sit and talk with you with a full understanding of what you might be going through. They know

first-hand how it feels to be told you have cancer, or that someone close to you has been diagnosed with it. They understand the feeling of despair at not knowing where to turn to for immediate and long-term support and practical help.

Six members formed MABS San Javier in 2007. MABS are totally self funded and depend upon donations to pay for every aspect of the support they provide. Their new Drop-In and support centre has a comfortable patio, an area for a coffee and a chat, a consultation room plus a massage room and treatment room for lymphatic drainage and other complimentary treatments.

One of the most important aspects of their support work includes Palliative nursing through their carers and buddies were they can sit with a cancer patient, to possibly give

respite to the personal carer. They can help with picking up prescriptions, shopping, making a cup of tea, or just by being there to listen to what’s going on in your life.

Many of the volunteers have a background in nursing and keep in touch with the latest developments in medicine, allowing them to pass on information on all types of cancer, treatments and cancer drugs. Two of their most popular services are Translators to assist at clinics and hospitals and they can transport cancer patients to and from

hospital appointments.

A date for your diary is March 21st, as on the third Friday of every month they have a Share and Care Group meeting from 11.00 until 1.00pm to which everyone is invited.

Usually where you download your Kindle books from is determined by the country that your Amazon account is registered in. So if you have an Amazon account registered using a Spanish address, your Kindle will be directed to the Spanish Amazon Store. If you have an Amazon account registered using a UK address with a UK credit card, your Kindle will be directed to the UK Amazon Store.

However, there is a function under ‘manage my kindle’ to change the Amazon site to and from ‘.com’ to ‘.co.uk’, so you can buy from your UK Amazon Store account using a Kindle bought via ‘.com’. There will be differences in downloadable content between the two countries Amazon accounts, as not all books publishes in the UK will be licensed to be sold in Spain. And obviously the amount of English print books available on Spanish Amazon Store will be fewer than on UK Amazon Store.

So you may want to play it safe and use a UK Amazon account, with a UK address and UK credit card, to buy a Kindle from the UK, and then you will have no problems, even in Spain, downloading books from the UK Amazon Store.

HI AUNTY: My neighbour kindly gave me his password so I can use the internet in my apartment. I can pick up the signal on my Samsung Galaxy Ace phone easily but only occasionally on my Acer Netbook. What is the reason for this? Hope you can help. Tony M - Yes most weeks I get out on Monday Wednesday and Friday.

Campbell - Do you play continuously year round?

HOW OFTEN does the casual golfer make a positive decision regarding his choice of golf ball? If you are a relatively high handicapper, I suspect that it is not very often.

By Tony Myles SO WHAT is it that determines what brand and composition of ball ends up on your tee?

It is most likely to be one of a number of factors.

1. A ball that was in a box that you won in an event. (It could happen!)

2. A ball that was a present from someone who probably doesn’t play golf but once saw Tiger Woods playing with one that had the same logo.

Or most likely 3. A ball you found under a bush or fished out of the water.

And yet every manufacturer devotes large sums to the science of ball compression and flight and in so doing is seeking perfection on your behalf by manufacturing a ball that allows you to maximise driver distance while controlling any unintended side spin.

NOW HERE IS THE PROBLEM Many of us pick a particular ball because we occasionally have a great shot using it and then have blind faith in the hope that this one-off incident can become the manner in which we regularly play the game. Do you recognise someone from that description??

The reality is that so much depends on Swing Speed and as most golfers will appreciate, this varies in direct proportion to your skill. So whilst a professional will reach over 110 mph at impact, an amateur risking anything faster than 90 mph will watch in bitter disappointment as their ball travels anywhere other than along the intended route.

So immediately we can see the need for the wide range of golf ball constructions to accommodate the higher collision speed of the pros, and the more leisurely pace of the amateur.

THESE ARE THE FACTS High handicapped players with a typical swing speed of 90 mph need a more forgiving ball off the tee - should be picking up the following in the pro shop (or better still in Campbell’s Golf Shop in Ondara) . . .

1. Titleist NXT 2. Srixon Soft Feel

Medium Handicap player - 12-20 scoring close to handicap on a regular basis. Should favour a slightly harder ball which offers some increased length off the tee combined with greater spin.

Srixon Trispeed DON’T GO BREAKING MY HEART Single figure players and professionals - and this is going to be a major disappointment for a large number of amateur golfers At this level you have command of your swing, spin, and you hit the ball with confidence and consistency. You need a ball that is long off the tee but provides the feel you desire for the shots around the green and putting. You should consider 1. Titleist Pro V 1 (Yes this ball is intended for LOW handicap players and professionals.)

2. Taylor Made Tour Preferred In addition Campbell has a suggestion which is suitable for the majority of casual players.

“Bear in mind that at least one third of all shots we play are from within 100 yards of the green, so a ball with greater spin will help the control of these shots. I would always recommend a middle-of-the-road ball like the Srixon AD333 which is suitable for the majority of players”.

So if you are languishing around the 20+ handicap zone and you watch sadly as the last Pro V 1 in your bag sails gracefully into the middle of a lake, then take heart from the fact that the options you have left could well help you improve your round.

Citroen DS3 Cabrio A FIVE seat cabriolet with an electronic folding hood that can be operated at speeds of up to 75mph: the key benefit of the Citroen DS3 Cabrio is the only convertible in its class to accommodate so many passengers and to be equipped with a 245 litre boot and split folding rear seat, making it probably the most versatile convertible on Spain’s roads today.

That boot initially looks tiddly but after the lid is lifted it is large enough

for a standard pushchair (with the rear wheels removed and packed separately in the boot), which I must say surprises me.

As I sit inside the top-of-the-range 155bhp model I recall testing a Lexus IS250C luxury convertible. I was at the traffic lights when the sun decided to come out and I pressed the button for the roof to go down. Almost instantaneously

the lights went to green and I had to get moving. As soon as the car moved the roof stopped going down and so I was driving with it half up and with part of the boot lid still open. I pulled over as soon as it was safe to do so; a ridiculous situation to be in and unsafe.

Thank goodness there is finally a convertible that is well suited to the British weather and to impatient motorists like me. Because the roof does not fold back into the boot but above the rear window, it makes it more practical all round, which is why the roof can be operated at speeds of up to 75mph.

The DS3’s high quality canvas roof compliments the bodywork and to the unknowing it appears to be simply a hot hatch but we know otherwise. On first acquaintance the vehicle looks just like the DS3 coupe.

My test takes place in the middle of winter with lashing rain and much to my wife’s distaste I have to experience driving

with the roof down.

Controlled by a button on the overhead console, the hood opens and closes in just 16 seconds flat, which is just as well because when the weather gets too unbearable that roof just has to go up. It’s just as well that it is fitted with a hardwearing interior that features leather seats and much plastic, which copes with excess rainwater well. But the great thing is that with the air conditioning turned up to maximum heat you can enjoy all the benefits of open top driving with the advantage of a hot climate.

When the DS3 Cabrio’s roof is open an aerodynamic front deflector reduces wind noise and deflects air currents to prevent buffeting.

It’s a gutsy, fun car to drive with plenty of power, if required. As with all convertibles it makes a great second car.
