Slick ‘City’ scam alarm

EXPERIENCED INVESTOR Frank Roberts is warning people of a “sophisticated” fraud gang who swindled him out of a fortune in an elaborate financial sting.

The businessman – who quit the rat race for a new life in Spain with his family – believed he was investing for long term security with a highly reputable City of London finance house.

However, he was dealing with a ghost ‘mirror’ fraudulent company, complete with copied genuine paperwork and the stolen identities of real brokers and fund managers, including their trading registration numbers. Speaking at his home in Ontinyent, he said British and Spanish police were now hunting criminals that apparently have links to Malaga after the scam was discovered last week.

And the married father-of-three told RTN: “We are down many tens of thousands of pounds. What money we have has to last us – it is very painful when it goes missing.”

Ironically, as the con was unearthed, Spanish and UK police were making over 110 arrests on a £15 million international shares scam that defrauded around 1,000 people. A so-called ‘boiler-room’ fraud involves selling worthless or non-existent shares. Conmen target people who have already invested in the stock market and bombard them with a high-pressure sales pitch offering high returns.

STING It is thought such stings cost victims, many of them elderly, more than £240 million a year.

Policia Local receive two new vans

by Keith Nicol SECURITY FORCE resources received a boost last week in Torrevieja with the delivery of two new vans, to add to their fleet of 17 new cars for the Policia Local. These two vehicles, designed specifically for law enforcement functions, have been assigned to the Reinforcement Operative Group (GRO) of the Local Police, the men in black, who primarily work the town centre and seafront area, keeping it clear of hawkers and illegal dealers.

Each vehicle has nine seats and is equipped with a 2,000cc diesel engine, which complies with EURO 5 regulations that significantly reduces pollution. They are also equipped with all regulatory police back up equipment, including cones, tape, containment devices, GPS tracking device, browser, and the latest technologies needed to deliver an effective service.

Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon said

that the only outstanding item to complete the new vehicle fleet for the Local Police is a special truck, which they hope to receive soon. The Mayor recalled that in late November 2013, the police force was presented with almost an entirely new fleet of vehicles; representing an investment of 734,368€ euros through a leasing system for four years. Of the 17 vehicles purchased,14 are patrol cars, 5 of them equipped with a special screening kit for detainees and 9 vehicles for general services, adapted for the local police.

Because some of the cars can be on patrol 24hours a day, resulting in at least 200km plus on any day, patrol cars can typically cover five or six times or more kilometres per year than the distance of a typical family motor. The four year lease option is the best value for money, as this includes maintenance and servicing.

After four years, a typical patrol car can have covered 350,000km during its short lifespan.

The freighter ‘Genco Ocean’ loads salt for the United States

WITH ANOTHER severe weather pattern expected to hit the Eastern USA this weekend, Torrevieja’s salt works have been busy filling up freighters to fill the need for road salt, to combat the late winter snow flurries. This week the freighter ‘Genco Ocean’ arrived in the Port of Torrevieja to fill her hold before continuing on her voyage to the United States with a cargo of 30,000 tons of salt. The cargo ship ‘Genco Ocean’, travelling under the Liberia flag is 183 meters long and about 30 metres wide, with primarily a Filipino crew. Although management at Torrevieja’s Salt work expected that their major salt for road works was finished for the season, the forecast for a return to freezing temperatures along the Eastern Seaboard has had a positive effect on the local economy with this latest shipment.

Owners uprising at Mi Sol Park

by Keith Nicol MI SOL Park has been a residential zone of controversy for many years. The former mobile home park, located at the southern end of Torrevieja’s Park of Nations, has suffered from various ailments over the years primarily caused from their change of use from a holiday camping site, to a residential area offering a prime location for a low investment, from the 90’s onwards.

The park was established in 1972 and now holds the status as a ‘Comunidad de Propietarios’, or a community of owners, rather than an Urbanisation. Last week, 75 residents legally signed documents to force an Extraordinary General Meeting of owners. The Notice for the EGM reads ‘The undersigned owners of the community of Mi Sol, representing more than 25% of the owners, have in accordance with article 15 of the law on horizontal properties, have asked the president to call a general meeting, to which he has not responded.’

In January, 2014, Mi Sol’s president called a general meeting to discuss needed work on the communal swimming pool.

He said he had one quote to completely replace the pool for around 70,000€. Those present unanimously turned his request down. In February he called another meeting and presented an estimate for almost 36,000€. Once again, those in attendance unanimously said ‘no’, as the project would have cost each plot owner an average of 250€ to 350€ each as an extra special payment. A quote was then sought from a local pool specialist who estimated that it would cost around 5,000€ to repair the pool, details of which were given to the president.

However in March, residents who had voted against major work on the pool area awoke to find that the President had given the go-ahead to rip up the pool, without any backing of the community of owners, and without funds in the community bank to cover costs.

One resident, who asked not to be named said; “I have been asked on many occasions to stand for President and until

now I declined to do so. However, on seeing the damage being done, I decided it was time to put my name forward as President, and I took it upon myself to contact the Guardia Civil, to ask them to stop the workmen. They said this was not in their jurisdiction and to contact Polica Local, which we did. On going to the gate to allow them entrance to Mi Sol, I found the President was already there and talking to the Police. The president accused me of attacking him and the police were close to arresting me. Although the Policia Local stopped work on the pool because of a lack of a work order, I later received a summons to appear in court. The letter did not have any details of the charges. I went to court on Monday with my lawyer to find that I was facing charges of attacking the President. The president’s step-son said he

witnessed the attack, but we were able to prove that he was not where he said when the attack happened, and my lawyer has now issued a denuncia against them, for lying in court.

On Tuesday I was informed that charges would not be taken against me and I was absolved of any crime.”

Local owners formed a protest group on Tuesday morning at the pool. The President attended for about two minutes before storming off, refusing to speak to RTN and giving his point of view, while threatening to get the Policia Local back.

For the moment, work on the pool has ceased. An EGM has been called for March 29th. In the meantime, those owners protesting the actions of the President are hoping a positive change will take place through the EGM and that the community can enjoy a positive future at Mi Sol.

TorreviejaLink growing strong

by Keith Nicol TRYING TO keep up to date with what is going on in the region rather than what you have just missed, has always been a problem for residents and visitors, not helped by the short notice, or no notice, often given by local town halls and promoters.

One exception to the rule is ‘TorreviejaLink’, which is quickly becoming a model for others, and is already spawning imitators; which is not a bad thing. It’s the brainchild of the former Director of the Foreign Residents Office, Graham Knight and he said; “The basic idea is to keep the torrevejense public informed as to cultural events, sporting events, fiestas, charities, relevant information from the Ayunatmiento etc. All you have to do to stay informed is to send an email to torreviejalink@gmail.com and you will be added to our mailing list.”

Although TorreviejaLink already has hundreds of subscribers, Jean Paul Mulero, Director Oficina de Atencion al Residente Internacional (OARI) hopes to expand that

number into the thousands, since the city has upwards of 85,000 expatriate homeowners in the municipality who live in Torrevieja for at least part of the year.

FOR THE first time ever Freemasons in Spain have ‘come out’ wearing masonry regalia to take part in a protest rally held in Madrid in support of women’s rights following amendments to the country’s abortion laws. “This law curtails the rights of women and we are here to claim them,” said Ana Valet, president of the Spanish Federation of the International Order of Co-Freemasonry. The Masons, traditionally a low key organisation that prefers to ‘keep itself to itself’, marched behind a banner bearing their names along with their traditional lodge symbols. The masons are established in more than 60 countries with more than 30,000 members running a network of lodges worldwide.

He added: “It was not hard sell because he was selling to a knowledgeable audience, someone who had capital, someone into stocks and shares. Almost all his work was done.

“But he was still putting a hook out there and waiting for you to bite – and if you do it enough, you get enough fish. If I am just one victim, there must be hundreds more that he has hooked in the same way.”

Frank, who took early retirement from the information technology industry, said the family were looking to find better returns on capital and he put out some “feelers” on the internet, giving some basic details.

He was first contacted by a company who already look after an investment portfolio for the family and some months later by Mark – who claimed to be working for the worldrenowned City firm.

Frank said he knew of the company and was sent what appeared to be genuine details of investments to consider – later sinking money into an offshore bullion fund and later another broader-based fund.

And because the con uses genuine details, Frank was reassured by being able to watch his investments make money and read forecasts of how they were likely to perform in the future.

INVEST This month, Frank was offered and agreed to invest a further £10,000 – but said: “When the bank account details came through to send the money to, they were subtly different.”

He rang Mark but only reached an answer ‘phone, emailed the pair and finally rang the head office of the genuine company in London. “I left a series of messages trying to convince myself they were bona fide people...when I ring Mark I always get voice mail and he calls back.

“On this occasion when I left a message at head office, the boss David rang back five minutes later – I told the story. He said ‘I don’t send emails, I am the operations director and I have several hundred people who do that for me’,” said Frank.

“I thought it was a bit strange and asked about the email addresses I had been using and he said they were not his or Mark’s – again they were very slightly different from the genuine ones.

“I said I am now panicking – he said it was obviously a fraud and he would put me in contact with the firm’s security department.”

Franks stopped the transfer but on police instructions is playing Mark along – the last contact was on Tuesday – in a bid to be able to trace the bogus operation.

However, he said: “It is a scam but not the normal fly by night scam selling fly by night shares. It involves purportedly real people working for a real company selling real managed funds. It is very elaborate.”

by Keith Nicol AFTER YEARS of relentless decline in the use of urban bus system, public transportation seems to be becoming more in ‘vogue’ in Murcia. According to data released yesterday, Thursday, by the National Statistics Institute, Murcia’s autonomous community leads the way in terms of national growth of the use of buses as a means of public transport, with a rise of 4.8% during January, 2014.

Only two communities showed any growth patterns, with every other community staying static or showing a fall, with the exception of the Basque Community, although its growth level was a low 0.9%. All other regions recorded a decline in use, so that the national average showed a decline in usage of -1.5%.

The steepest declines in use of buses as public transportation are located in Extremadura (-8.4%), Castilla-La Mancha (-8.1%) and Castilla y León (-4.1).

Other communities and major cities such as Madrid and Barcelona have sprawling and efficient underground train systems, that allow public transit uses to avail themselves of both systems within a certain time frame, and in terms of these cities, the data can be more varied.

Murcia also continues to lead the way when it comes to pushing to be one of the greenest cities in Spain, especially when it comes to their extensive bicycle rental system, special bike routes, and season tickets for bike rental, all helping, along with the use of public transport, to give residents, workers, commuters and visitors an alternative to using the car as their one and only means of transportation.

ROCK SUPERSTAR Bono won a standing ovation when he urged European leaders to encourage people to buy Spanish goods and services to support the country’s recovery.

by Jack Troughton The U2 singer was speaking at a meeting of the European People’s Party in Dublin and the used the occasion to demand support for Spain.

The Irishman was surrounded by powerful politicians – including Spain’s Mariano Rajoy and Germany’s Angela Merkel – and easily topped the popularity charts for the longest and most applauded speech.

Bono’s speech took in capitalism, the EU, the controversial ‘troika’ of bankers, bailouts and racism.

And he said Europe as a whole still needed to work hard to get out of the economic crisis but also needed to work on unity to become a true “family” of nations, where all members must help each other.

He said Mr Rajoy was urging EU structural reforms to create liquidity in the Spanish economy but he demanded to know Europe’s family response.

“Where is our Europe-wide campaign to spotlight Spain, to encourage others to take their holidays there, to buy Spanish goods and listen to Spanish music?” he asked.

33% OF SPANIARDS say they eat foods that have exceeded the expiration date printed on the pack. The economic crisis has encouraged a keen sense of ‘waste not want not’ in Spanish communities leading to frugal buying habits and vigilance on unnecessary waste. The Spanish Confederation of Housewives, Consumers and Users (CEACCU) performed a representative survey of 750 families within the institutional

structure of the organization in order to analyse purchasing and consumption habits. The survey shows that 61% of Spaniards have changed their lifestyle in order to economise on food consumption. One in three Spaniards now look more carefully at supermarket offers; 50% are now more likely to consume leftovers; only 25% consider that food consumed after the expiration date loses its quality.

Taxi drivers strike ELCHE TAXI drivers, who officially cover El Altet Alicante airport are on strike until Monday 17th March. After more than 14 months of talks between the taxi drivers association, which covers 185 registered drivers, police and airport authorities they are refusing to work due to lack of controls over illegal unlicensed taxi´s poaching customers. They have demanded inspectors and a barrier to stop what they called ´foreign touts´ entering the airport facility. This will only affect those arriving at the airport with no pre-booked transport hoping to hail a white official taxi.

First illegal sale of organs in Spain

by Jan Gamm THE JUDICIAL Brigade in Valencia has arrested five people, all foreign, for their alleged involvement in the attempted sale of organs for transplant, specifically for Hatem Akouche, a wealthy 61-year-old Lebanese politician requiring a liver transplant. This is the first case of its type in Spain where the purchase or sale of organs is illegal. The investigation began in the summer of 2012 following a complaint from an NGO alerting the authorities about a group of people offering large sums of cash to illegal immigrants in exchange for parts of their livers for transplant.

Nine of the interested parties including two women were allegedly subjected to complex tests in a private Valencia clinic at a cost of around 15,000€. A Romanian woman found to be compatible with the recipient is reported to have been offered 40,000€ to be a donor. The five arrested are facing charges of organ trafficking, punishable by up to 12 years’ imprisonment.

THE PRICE of gasoline in the province of Alicante at 1.414€ per litre is now the fifth most expensive nationwide running closely behind Baleares, with an average of 1.45€ per litre; Valladolid (1,421€ per litre), Cordoba and Leon (1,416€). According to the Ministry for Industry & Energy the cheapest in Spain is Huesca province with an average selling price of 95 octane petrol 1,338€ per litre, and 1,282€ per litre for diesel.

According to the National Commission on Financial Markets and Competition, many of these differences are due to the

different taxation that applies to autonomic regions, warning that service stations in communities with the lowest tax burden take advantage of this opportunity to raise prices and increase margins.

I GOT a phone call from a number that came up as 119.

It was a person with an Indian accent who said there was a problem with my computer and that they worked for Microsoft. He asked me to go on my computer and press buttons. I started to do it and then thought what am I doing, I don’t know this person. I said I am sorry but I don’t know who you are, etc. He then directed me to a website which he said was theirs. The website was www.microassist.com, supposedly a training website for Microsoft. I told the person that it did not prove who he was. He said he would put me through to his supervisor.

This was another Indian person who told me to press buttons on the computer. I again said ‘I don’t know who you are’. He told me to go on his website. And said can you not see the Microsoft logo. I said, “Yes but anyone can cut and paste the logo.” He then put the phone down. I was on the ball but someone else might not be.

Total disgust WHAT WE saw today prompted me to write.

We were visiting friends in Orihuela Costa and a fancy, expensive looking Street-cleaning truck went by. A very tiny trickle of water was coming out of the bottom of the truck and the large brushes were feverishly sweeping the street. After the cleaning truck went by, the dirty stains on the street remained undisturbed by the very tiny trickle of water and the feverish sweeping brushes. There were two men in the street cleaning truck, one being the driver, and the other had his feet up on the dash doing absolutely nothing, except of course for collecting his wage from the taxpayer for doing absolutely nothing… The large stain on the street in front of my friends’ home remained untouched but the two people in the street cleaning truck got paid. Is it any wonder people write about their total disgust for the people running Orihuela Costa? On a more positive note, albeit off topic, the cartoon in a recent edition by your cartoonist Carter McKeague about the shifty looking bank manager was great. I have to my peril encountered one or two of them in the course of my life.

Frustrated with UK

I BECOME more frustrated every day as I see what is happening in the UK. Last night I watched a programme showing people struggling to make ends meet after paying rent and child care, left with £100 pounds for food. And then I read that ex-Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s wife is setting up a charity to help girls in Africa to attend school. Where are their priorities? They should help their own people first! But as our Prime Minister said the other day in an interview: “We are a rich nation and can afford to give the world £8.5 billion in aid.” Am I alone in thinking we should look after our own like the other G8 countries?

The fight against Cancer

I WOULD like to extend a heartfelt welcome to Carol Saunders, AECC member and Town Councillor from Calpe, in joining me in the fight against Cancer through early detection. As President of the Alfaz branch I have been operating the AECC Stay Well Campaign in the Calpe, Alfas, and Benidorm area for the past 10 years and hundreds of women have already passed through the process.

The system has proved enormously successful, resulting in much peace of mind for women for a very small outlay (voluntary contribution).

PHEW, IT’S been a bit of a whirl these last few days. I’ve just completed a three hundred mile drive from the Midlands through Hampshire (checking up on the old folks) into Sussex and back home for work on Monday.

But it was worth the trek because down there on the coast I finally got to meet my new grandson (I don‘t mean literally on the coast, he was in his parent‘s home - it’s still a tad cold out on the beach).

I tell you what though, waiting a whole week (that’s 168 of your Earth hours) to see him was agony - a bit like when you’re a kid and it’s only December 23rd and you want Christmas to hurry up and get here.

Anyway, I’ve realised that being a grandparent is a lot easier than being a parent. For example, you don’t have to leap up when they start crying, you don’t have to constantly feed em and, more importantly, you don’t have to change Technicolor lined nappies of varying consistencies. Nope, none of that parenty stuff - you get to cuddle them, spoil them and, if you’ve got the relevant qualifications (NVQ Grade 2 Pramulator Safety) push the pram - which I did with great alacrity along Eastbourne seafront last Sunday.

And he was such a good little boy (I say ‘little’ he’s a bit of a whopper with a birth weight of 9lb 12oz) he slept while we munched through lunch and did the ice cream thing on the beach. As we sat in the warm early spring sun, I felt tempted to raise him high above my head and show him the English Channel; you know, kind of like Kunta Kinte did in Roots. Luckily, my daughter knowing how Frank Spencer-ish I

can be thought better of this idea.

Now what advice should I give him? It should be something wise and solid - above and beyond, of course, the natural axioms like supporting the English rugby team and Seagulls, aka Brighton Hove Albion. Hmmm, it’s hard to think of something wise when you’re not wise yourself. I don’t think, “Hang on Kid, the ride begins now!” quite does it.

Well, the nearest thing to a mobile phone was a clunky thing housed in a big red chunk of a box. Any road, it was a long time ago and my grandma’s boyfriend (I know, I know, a bit racy for the late fifties) gave me some playing cards in a leather case. He tried to teach me the game, Patience. “You can keep these,” he said. On the front was a motif that read: “Life ain’t about holding the good cards; it’s playing a bad hand well.” Do you know for years I puzzled over that. And then one day, much like a song you’ve heard for years but misunderstood the lyric, it zoomed into clear focus. “A ha,” I thought, “I get that now…” So, perhaps some slow cook advice would be best for little Finley, something to really think about.

When I think about it, I can’t remember my granddad giving me any advice. Maybe he did but it was of the

slow cook variety that I took on gradually and subconsciously. My abiding memory of him was someone that I really wanted to be with. And I guess, without getting overbearingly maudlin, that would be the line to take.

Have fun with them and let them have fun with you.

There is an Irish proverb that goes: Moi an olge agus tiocfaidh sí. I believe this to mean: “Praise the child and she will flourish.” Yup, I think I’ll go along with that one. For as long as these old knees will take it I’ll get on all fours and be the horsey… and just have fun.

Cucaracha Club on Video and Radio

by Keith Nicol YVONNE AND Clive, undercover agents for ‘The Cucaracha Club’, slipped into the studios of TKO fm on Sunday to promote their new film. Fresh from a day of shooting a trailer with Viva TV promoting the ‘Crowd funding’ aspects of the low budget, independent production, they told their tale of how they became involved in Siesta Film Productions and how they hope this film will start to establish Torrevieja as a centre for film production on the Costa Blanca.

The Cucaracha Club is a light-hearted, spy flavoured, action thriller that is trying to shake up the cinematic world on a number of fronts. Film production is set to take place along the coast from Benidorm to Cartagena this Autumn with location scouting and permissions already being sought from local authorities. There are some incredible hotels, local hot spots and points of interest in the old town of Benidorm that will be featured. Meanwhile other often overlooked locations such as the city of Torrevieja are firmly committed to getting their name and promoting their beauty spots and tourist merits all around the globe, as the plan of Siesta Film Productions is to enter the film in a number of prestigious film festivals, looking for a distributor and spreading the word about the region. The film may also be promoted at the dozen or more Tourism Fairs where the Costa Blanca promotes the region throughout the year.

‘Crowd Funding’ and to a point ‘Kick Starting’ are not new ideas to hit the film industry, having been around for a couple of decades, but when it comes to low budget features they have become the norm. For more than 75 years, companies have been using product placement, and before it was outlawed, subliminal marketing, to promote their products to the cinema and home audience, whether you realised it or not. Step back 50 years to another spy caper, to 1964 and a certain Mr James Bond, 007 in

‘Goldfinger’, and one major promotional item comes to mind: the Aston Martin DB5. Later Omega wristwatches would become a trademark associated with 007 and more recently BMW. Dramatic rescue ends happily THE RESCUE of 14 horses from a “living hell” in Callosa De Segura by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation (EHCRC) took a dramatic turn last Thursday. After securing legal paperwork, EHCRC working with donkey sanctuary El Refugio del Burrito were escorted to the horse dealers’ premises by six Guardia Civil officers, where they were met by television crews and members of the Spanish press as well as a crowd of onlookers. The owner of the premises was not happy that his horses were being taken: he and his family were guarding the entrance armed with sticks. The Guardia Civil officers were wonderful and with great diplomacy and skill calmed an explosive situation sufficiently to allow only Hassan and Dorothea to enter and check the horses’ condition and suitability to travel, after which permission was eventually given to take the horses to the centre in Rojales. Work on the exhausting 16-hour rescue was completed at 1am on Saturday. The horses have now settled into their new surroundings and will remain in the custody of Sue and Rod Weeding pending further legal procedures.

WOMEN’S GROUPS are outraged over a restaurant owner’s policy of asking her waitresses to strip to their underwear to please the customers. Restaurante Eric II in Tarragona, Catalonia, was featured on TV showing waitresses clad in only basques, knickers and stockings serving breakfast. Yet despite criticism from women’s rights activists from the Reus L’Violet Hora organisation, who reported the restaurant to police, owner Loli Carrillo upholds that she is not sexist but merely “trying to make a living” and “doing nothing wrong.”

She also added that on some days the girls were in fancy dress. Needless to say business is booming. Catalonia police are investigating the complaint.

by Irena Bodnarec Last Saturday evening a British bar located in the Rincon de Loix area of Benidorm was the subject of a police raid.

The carefully planned swoop targeted predominantly expats participating in illegal gambling activities – namely bingo. They observed elderly Brits entering the premises from the rear of the building, into what is described as a specially set up area, segregated from the main bar. Some of the police involved were plain clothed undercover officers, enabling them to easily blend in.

The police confiscated several items including computers, monitors, bingo tickets and 514 euros in cash. They also identified several employees, working illegally without a contract and who had not declared their earnings.

Gambling is illegal in Spain outside of registered and authorized establishments yet it is a common sight to see boards advertising ´Eye´s Down´or ´Housey Housey´ outside many British bars. As participants you can also technically be arrested, so be cautious.

Goodbye graffiti

by Keith Nicol MANY OF Torrevieja’s Municipal Buildings, surround walls and abandoned buildings will be receiving a facelift over the next 12 months, as a new scheme to help the long term unemployed kicks in. The ADL Job Shop is performing maintenance work along the seafront with one of the many tasks being to cover or remove existing graffiti both on the East Dike as the facades facing the Paseo Juan Aparicio.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, and the Councillor for Employment and Development, José Antonio Sánchez, visited the East Dock last week, where painting students from the Employment Workshop Mediterranean VII are performing work on the zone.

Eduardo Dolon explained that; “On the East Dike they are painting all of the wall with smooth paint in medium grey colour, in order to cover the damage and especially existing graffiti in its entirety, of over 1,800 linear metres.” Dolon added; “On Juan Aparicio Promenade, we will soon be sanding preparing wood for the addition of a subsequent teak protector along with a brushed rust protector and subsequent application of antioxidant enamel.”

Meanwhile, the professor specializing in architectural painting, Jorge Borrellas, said the work would “use about 2,000 litres of smooth medium grey paint, 50 litres of paint for the smooth red-bricks, almost 400 litres of paint for cov-

The training project Mediterranean Employment Workshop VII began the first week of January 2014, and lasts for one year. It comprises a total of 53 people (44 students and 9 teachers-workers and monitors). For the implementation of this project the city of Torrevieja has obtained a grant from

SERVEF and the European Social Fund of 828,315.84€, a sum which must be added the municipal investment of 791,157€.

Future projects are being developed in various parts of Torrevieja including the Municipal Training Centre, Library and Municipal Archives, Los Balcones Garden (next to Queen’s Park Sal), Football Fields and the Rugby multipurpose “Nelson Mandela “in the Sports City.

Finally, the mayor stressed that the work carried out is all in compliance with the objectives set by the instructors and professors teaching this important educational employment project.

by Keith Nicol AFTER YEARS of waiting and formal requests that seemed to have fallen on deaf ears, Orihuela Costa’s La Reiga area now has a new footbridge to allow the safe passage across the N332. On Monday, Orihuela’s Mayor, Monserrate Guillén, Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer , along with councillors Rosa Martínez and Antonio Zapata from the PSOE, Bob Houliston from CLARO plus Luis Galiano from Los Verdes showed solidarity at the official opening of the pedestrian footbridge.

and Guillén, reminded the gathered crowds how the bridge had been asked for by residents since 2009 but a blind eye had been turned to this request by the ruling PP government of the time. The bridge is strategically placed for the expected large flow of foot traffic, who regularly visit the health centre, commercial and residential zones.

Local resident Antonio officially cut the ribbon, with around sixty local residents and politicians taking their opportunity to walk across the footbridge in about the same amount of time it takes to drive around the elaborate roundabout and bridge complex, in one’s car.

Barcenas offers information to trial judge

LUIS BARCENAS is back in the headlines after writing to trial judge Pablo Ruz to offer information in exchange for his release from Soto del Real prison, where he has been incarcerated for the past eight months. A prisoner on remand with Barcenas has reported that the ex-PP Treasurer has “aged ten years” during his prison stretch and is now “desperate” to gain his freedom at whatever cost. The letter arrived at the court last Friday accompanied by a letter from Barcenas’ lawyer, Javier Gomez de Liano. This latest attempt by Barcenas to secure release follows two previous requests, both rejected due to the risk of flight and also the possibility of evidence tampering.

New president of Murcia MURCIA HAS a new President of the Community and he is Alberto Garre. On Wednesday evening the Regional Board of the Partido Popular approved him to take over from Snr. Valcárcel who has vacated the position in order to campaign for a position within the

European Parliament in May, 2014. Asked by the Press if Garre thought he was strong enough to be the candidate in the 2015 regional elections, Garre said that he did not feel “anything right now.”

Nevertheless, he assured everyone that he felt he had the

strength to form a government that would try and face all of the problems facing the region.

Garre said he was “very proud” that the PP chose him to lead the way for the next year and added that he felt confident and not fear in leading the Murcia region.

Ruth Lorenzo records her song for Eurovision

by Jack Troughton JAVEA’S LEGENDARY sponsored New Year’s Day swim achieved another epic milestone this week when 1,680€ was donated to children’s charity EMAUS. This year marked the 30th anniversary of an event that attracts people prepared to get wet at the resort’s Arenal Beach – and raise money for two good causes.

Traditionally cash raised buys toys for the children cared for at the Preventorio in Gandia – often mistakenly referred to as a children’s orphanage – and in recent years any cash left over has gone to EMAUS. Organised for 17 years by Nigel and Karen Rushton, of the Lancashire Bruja Bar and took over from the Humpty Dumpty Newsagent, 2014 saw over 40 people brave a “bracing” sea – many steeling themselves against the cold and party hangovers with a flask of spirits.

Karen uses the money to buy presents for the annual Three Kings celebration at the Preventorio and donates the rest, once it is all collected, to the EMAUS children’s charity.

And as well as individual sponsorship and collection boxes passing through the hundreds of people who turn out to watch the swimmers take the plunge, money is also donated from the Lancashire Bruja’s swear box.

This year cash also came from Brenda at Bodywise, the Humpty Dumpty,

Shirley and Bob, Quick Save at Arenal, Angela and Lanky, Digbys Bar, Harley, Michael and Anthony. Karen said: “Thanks to everyone who was involved again this year.”

by Keith Nicol LAST WEEK Murcia native Ruth Lorenzo travelled to Madrid to record her presentation for Eurovision 2014.

DR, the Danish public television station has spent the last few months travelling throughout Europe to record the finalists for Eurovision.

Ruth Lorenzo is possibly best known for coming fifth in the fifth series of the British TV talent show The X Factor in 2008 and was also short listed to represent the UK this year.

After a hotly contested contest in Barcelona, Ruth was chosen as Spain’s choice by the telephone vote to represent Spain at Eurovision 2014. Last week she could be found recording the video to be shown in previews and

for publicity at the Royal Astronomical Observatory and Madrid’s Retiro.

“We are recording the 2014 Eurovision postcard, which is very artistic. We want to show a cheerful and carefree side to Spain”, commented the young singer, who has spent the last few days immersed in the recording of the video for the song: ‘Dancing in the Rain’. “In the coming days I expect to take part in many television promotions, and I have my fingers crossed to one day soon be able to go home to be with my family.” The song has raised a few eyebrows in certain musical circles as part of the song is sung in English, which has not pleased everyone, but producers believe this enhances their chances with the voting panels.

San Javier Jazz Returns SAN JAVIER Jazz Festival is set to open its doors again on July 5th, 2014. A few of the main artists were announced this week, among them being guitar legend George Benson who will perform on opening night.

by Keith Nicol In San Javier, George Benson will present his new album ‘My Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole’, recorded with Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, with an exceptional performance by festival alumni, Wynton Marsalis. Staying with the Nat King Cole theme, another name featured during Wednesday’s announcement is the brother of Nat King Cole, Freddy Cole, who will receive the Festival de Jazz de San Javier 2014 Award in recognition of his career.

Michel Camilo recently won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album with his album “What’s Up”, which mixes Latin rhythms with jazz, returns to the Festival for the third time with his trio while another living legend, Booker T. Jones, leader of the legendary band Booker T. and The MG’s, and one of the key figures of classic soul, will perform for the first time at San Javier Jazz.

Festival Director, Alberto Nieto, announced the initial details for the XVII Festival accompanied by the Mayor of San Javier, Juan Martinez and the Councillor for Culture, Inmaculada García. The mayor praised the quality of the Festival program which this year

has increased its budget by 10 percent. Martinez reiterated the support of the City of San Javier towards the Jazz Festival, highlighting its cultural, tourist and economic profitability.

Councillor for Culture, Inmaculada García announced that tickets and season tickets are now available from the Festivals Office and that the special concert tickets for George Benson on July 5th, will cost 35€. The rest of the schedule will be announced in mid-April.

JOHN LENNON’S widow, 81-year-oldYoko Ono, is in Bilbao for the opening of her exhibition at the Guggenheim today (Friday) entitled ‘Half a Wind’.

The retrospective exhibition showcases around 200 pieces including installations, objects, drawings, photographs and audio art covering Yoko Ono’s career, with a section dedicated to her music and film production. Yoko dined with a companion at noted restaurant ‘Arzak’ on Tuesday, enjoying a number of courses but drinking only water and leaving early.

She later mysteriously Tweeted: “Remember, we are all in the same ocean water.” That’s Yoko for you! The Half a Wind Exhibition at the Guggenheim is to run until 1st September.

A touch of the classics at the Casino Derek, Karin and Maureen

The evening features three well known local personalities; tenor Derek Francis, soprano Maureen Roberts and pianist Karin Krause. Guadamar resident Maureen has had a home in Spain for more than 25 years and has performed at many different events with Derek, going all the way back to 2004, when they performed together during European Cultural Week. She is equally comfortable performing classic pieces such as Ave Maria, through Gilbert and Sullivan to Lloyd Webber and Sunday’s show will also contain a couple of duos with Derek, light opera from Kismet and even a little swing from Duke Ellington.

First tenor Derek will again be hitting those high notes performing classics from Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Nessum Dorma, with the show finishing on a high with music from The Merry Widow.

Ryanair to sell tickets through Travelport

RYANAIR HAS always boasted that it is one of the few airlines in the world selling tickets without the help of travel agencies. In an about turn CEO Michael O’Leary has now reached an agreement with leading agency Travelport in an attempt to attract more ticket sales. Ryanair announced last September that it was looking for an agency partnership to increase ticket sales. Easyjet already put their tickets through travel agents under an agreement signed in 2012 with Amadeus.

Funding food for families A GRAND Opening Day for newly registered charity AAN (Ayuda Al Neccesitado), helping the needy of San Fulgencio and Urb La Marina, is to be held on 24th March from 11am to 2pm at its Charity Shop premises at Plaza Sierra Castilla (beneath the laundry).

The Official Opening of AAN will continue in the evening with a Las Vegas Night at The Hillside in La Marina starting at 8pm with tickets at 5€ each.

Explaining the aim of the Charity Mrs Prior said: “The Charity supports many families who need food or other essentials. There are currently more than 200 people, including 70 children, in the local community who do

not qualify for State assistance and do not have enough money to feed themselves.

Distribution of food is controlled by the Town Hall via a list supplied by Social Services which identifies families in need. The Charity can also respond immediately when destitute families or individuals require emergency assistance.”

Food for the needy can be donated to the Mini Town Hall or brought into the shop.

The key word here is that it should be ‘selfless’. A random act of kindness is not for your benefit but just to make (hopefully) someone happy. In most case the actions we take are based upon our own needs or wishes, no matter how altruistic we think we are. That’s why it’s a bonus that there are benefits to making a Spanish resident tax declaration.

As a reminder, most residents are required to present their annual resident tax declaration before 30th June and declare their worldwide income for tax purposes.

Having made a resident tax declaration it is easier for you to obtain a fiscal residency certificate. This certificate then acts as evidence that you really have been resident and can help prevent you having 3% of the sale price of your house retained. It also helps you reduce or eliminate inheritance tax.

We’re not talking about paltry sums of money either. For example, where the husband or wife of a couple living in the Comunidad Valenciana dies, the remaining spouse inheriting 50% of the property,

benefits from a 95% reduction on the value of the property (i.e. tax calculated only on 5%), plus another 100,000€ tax free allowance. If, after these reductions have been made, there remains an amount of tax to pay, a further 75% discount is applicable.

In most cases such as this, the inheritance tax will be zero where a property is valued at less than ½ a million euros and is jointly owned. However, if you cannot prove you are a fiscal resident or are a non-resident then you only have approximately 16,000€ of tax free allowance.

This means that for any property owned jointly and valued over 32,000€ on the death of one spouse there will be inheritance tax to pay. This could work out at around 3,250€ for a property worth 100,000€.

We have seen cases where someone who has classed themselves as a resident has not been acknowledged as such by the Spanish Tax Authority because they have not been able to demonstrate their fiscal residency status. Just having the green residency certificate or card is not sufficient to prove it. It is your responsibility to make sure you have the evidence. After all, if there’s one source you can’t expect a random act of kindness from, it’s the Spanish Tax Authority.

Real estate in Spain LIABILITIES OF previous house owner to third parties (utility supply companies).

SOME MONTHS ago we bought a property in Moraira. We received the first electricity bill and an unpleasant surprise. The amount due corresponds almost entirely to the former owner. When we entered the property we took the values of the meter to know our part. We have tried to clear things with the former owner, but he refuses to take any action.

Are we in danger of having our electricity supply cut off if we do not pay this bill? Can we force the former owner to attend his obligations?

This situation makes it necessary to highlight the convenience of checking the current situation of a property before buying it. You should not only confirm the legal situation of the property, but also check all debts of the previous ownership. Certain outstanding liabilities are likely to be transmitted to the new owner.

It is essential to check the account status with all supplying firms to solve any future incidence. This

information will avoid problems, as you can require the current owner to settle his debts, or you can retain the funds from the purchase price to pay the debt(s) and assure there will be no problems in the future.

In case the acquisition has already taken place, you should clear the issue with the supplying company and obtain their “written” confirmation that the debt is not yours as they have your application for change of ownership with the date, the meter reading and your personal data.

However, the supplying companies generally refuse a separate invoicing (to each his own), as they understand that the consumption is linked to the property and now you are the owner, but this point can be questioned.

You would have the following options: a) You pay the total bill and start the proceeding against the previous owner to claim your money back. b) You can try to split from the existing contract and apply for a completely new one. The debt would not

affect you any more.

This second option involves high costs, as the companies generally demand to purchase and install a new meter, a new connection, etc. Thus, depending on the amount of the debt, the costs could be higher than the amount due.

Problem prevention is preferable to problem solving.

Therefore we recommend you to thoroughly check the possible debts of the previous owner. The resulting information will help you to take precautions and avoid problems.

I HAVE had a lot of enquiries lately from clients requesting advice on what to do with their Pension Funds at retirement.

THE ANSWER is that there is no ‘one size fits all’ – there are a multitude of things to consider, some of which being: where resident; nationality; age; sex; lump sum; tax status; existing savings; risk profile; annuity rate; company invested with; type of scheme; marital status; death benefit… the list is endless so please do not be surprised if the stock answer is: “It depends.”

What is essential is that if you have a company or private pension scheme from the UK do not just accept the first offer that comes along. There have been many financial articles published in the press recently slating financial firms for giving poor value annuities and ‘ripping off’ pension pots. The truth is that in their paperwork they will always recommend that you seek Independent Financial Advice but what normally happens is that a retiree just wants to gets the paperwork sent back because they do not really understand it.

Make sure that an Independent Financial Adviser looks at your scheme and looks at all the alternatives available for you and YOUR circumstances. This can only be done if a full analysis of your present and future situation takes place and

all the alternatives are explored.

I saw one client last week and the difference in income obtained by shopping around was more than £6,000 per annum. Another client from last year started receiving pension benefits before seeing me and it was too late to get a tax free amount of £75,000 as he had already purchased an annuity. He was unaware this lump sum was available from his pension and he could have used to pay off debts.

Problems with fruit trees

RECENT QUESTIONS sent to me on gardeninginspain@hotmail.com and also asked at recent talks indicate that fruit trees, especially citrus trees, continue to be a problem. There is not sufficient space in a weekly article to cover all the issues recently raised but all are covered in the book ‘Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain – From Strawberries to Oranges and Melons’.

For this week I have selected the following questions to answer: Why do small fruit fall off recently planted fruit trees?

Generally this is due to the fact that the plant needs to give priority to the development of a good root ball before it can extract sufficient nutrients from the soil to support the development of fruits to ripeness.

Why do many citrus trees become stunted after five or six years?

In many cases it is because the roots were not separated out when the tree was planted. Roots that were intertwined have now developed as a tight corkscrew probably strangling the tree. How to plant is illustrated on page 65 of the book mentioned above.

My mandarin fruits are still green and sour but my neighbour’s turned orange several months ago and they have eaten them all. What should we do?

The answer is to be patient. You have obviously

purchased a later fruiting variety. If you like mandarins over a long period of time plant four trees – An early season one, an early mid-season one, a late mid-season and a late season one.

Should we harvest all the fruit on a tree at the same time as the commercial growers do?

Unless you are selling them the answer is no. It is wisest to harvest individual fruit as they ripen. The only way to be sure that mandarins are ripe and sweet is to eat one. Normally the first fruits to ripen are the low ones on the south-facing side ripened by direct sun rays and by reflected heat from the surface of the soil. The last to ripen will be those on the north side, hidden in the centre of the tree.

Our apricots are attacked by insects as soon as they are fully ripe. What should I do?

Pick your fruit about five days earlier while they are still firm. They can be eaten raw within a couple of days and surplus fruits can be frozen, cooked or eaten raw.

Last year our olives dried up and could not be used for oil. What could I have done?

October and November were exceptionally hot and there was no rain. Two things happened: there were exceptional attacks by fruit flies looking for moisture and the roots of trees could not extract sufficient water to prevent the fruits from drying out. Irrigated olive groves escaped the problem.

times, through the upheaval of the Revolution and well into the 20th Century. Entire rooms have been shipped here from all corners, then rebuilt, recapturing the essence of a variety of eras.

For amazing atmosphere, take the Metro, then make the steep climb to the Sacre Coeur, in the district of Montmartre. The church is as awe-inspiring as the views across Paris and beyond, while down below and around the corner the place bustles with pavement artists. It’s all just brilliant.

Getting around is easy. Montmartre aside, it’s pretty flat and there’s always the Metro or the river buses. Eating out is no problem, either, unless you call a super-abundance of dining places, catering for all conceivable tastes, a problem.

Guide books are actually quite useful for locating recommended restaurants and give an idea of the costs too.

All too soon our short break in Paris was over. And it was time to be whisked away back home and a chance to put our feet up. They may have ached a bit from all that walking but it was well worth a visit. We simply can’t wait to go back there.

Andy Ormiston’s Cameo’s and Outlook

By Keith Nicol IF ANYONE is interested in the history of Torrevieja and the Vega Baja, you probably need to look no further than to Torrevieja Resident Andy Ormiston. Scotsman Andy moved to Torrevieja with his Spanish wife and family back in 1986 and over the years has been involved in a variety of professions from property sales through journalism to organising major charity events. Now well and truly retired, his hobby continues to be his writing, be it for magazines, newspapers, books or his newest venture, Torrevieja Outlook.

Andy is well known in local circles for his charity work, as the father of local award winning, singer-songwriter Shani, the inspiration behind the original Torrevieja Fiesta calendar and the most comprehensive English Language history book about the evolution of the City of Salt, ‘Torrevieja Cameos’.

Torrevieja Cameos was first published in 2008 and the first edition of the book is almost sold out, but with a possible Kindle and iPad version in the pipeline. It chronicles the evolution of the city until 1899, with his second volume covering the 20th century, just about ready to go, and only requiring the funding to print the book, although again, an electronic version is under consideration. The original book is full of great photographs and marvellous stories about the town since its earliest settlers including accounts of the earthquake of 1829, tales of smuggling, the salt trade and all that has shaped Torrevieja as she is today.

Having a few mobility problems with hips and knees has meant that Andy has been unable to get out and about as much as he would like to, and so his newest venture is one he can do from the comfort of a sidewalk café or relaxing at home, an online magazine that’s free and non profit, providing details of many aspects of local life, what’s happening and where to go around the region. This month Andy looks in depth at the Semana Santa processions and what this means to the Spanish people, plus the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Torrevieja’s largest float being carried by Spain’s first international and non denominational cofradia, Los Costaleros. Two new best friends doing it for

TODAY’S MAIN feature may come as a bit of a surprise to a few of you who know my feelings about the world of reality television. I am referring here to a show that opened last Sunday in the US of A that will unfold around super-mega bad girl Lindsay Lohan, and the first thing that caught my eye is that they´ve not come up with a catchy title for it, simply calling it ´Lindsay.´ This is the first piece of information that has got me believing that we might well get reality TV in the true sense of the word. The second and hugely more important piece of info is that the show about the troubled 27 year old singer and actress will go out on Oprah Winfrey’s own network, yep! … Oprah has got her own network. This has all come about after Lindsay recently appeared on The Oprah Show over a number of weeks and how it seems the two ladies have become good friends. Lindsay told Extra Magazine “it’s pretty raw, obviously it’s TV, so things will be edited which I can’t control, but I do know that my intentions going into it were really pure and really honest ... I appreciate all that’s happened and all that Oprah has done for me,” … heartfelt stuff indeed. You may recall that New York born Lindsay has been front page news for the last couple of years, having spent time in prison for jewellery theft, and been in so many rehab centres she´s got a season ticket. Lindsay waxed lyrical about her new best friend saying how she looks up to the person she calls ´The Hollywood Legend´ then saying “I love that I can call Oprah on the phone, and be like, ‘Oprah, can we talk right now?’ and she calls me within two minutes.” It’s all about USTV here, but if it comes out the way I think it will, for sure it will make it over the pond.

visit to the Oprah Winfrey camp. She helped Lindsay Lohan as you´ve just read, and she has only gone and done it again, but this time in the most bizarre set of circumstances. A woman tweeted how she would love to have a dress Oprah wore in a magazine shoot, and the talk show host only obliged … how cool is that!

La Siesta Ladies help AFA Judy Ferris from AFA receives a cheque for 500€ from the La Siesta Ladies friendship Group

THE NUMBER of clubs and associations seems to increase on a monthly basis on the Southern Costa Blanca. One of those that may not make the news very often but are involved in many different aspects of life in the local community is the La Siesta Ladies Friendship.

The Group is affiliated to La Siesta Church and seek out needy and worthwhile causes and helping where they can. Recently they donated 500€ to Judy Ferris from AFA, for the work they undertake with Alzheimer’s patients. A further 500€ was given to the treasurer of La Siesta Evangelical Church to help the needy in the group of churches to which their local church belongs.

This group of ladies raise money for various charities at an Annual Christmas Fayre which in 2014 is scheduled for November 29th at 10.30 am. A forward date for all diaries! All ladies are welcome to join us be they members of the church or not. They meet on the 1st Monday of the month at 3pm.

Alicante to Stroud in three weeks!

KEITH REDGERS and his friend George are preparing to undertake a sponsored cycle ride from San Javier to Stroud in the UK, in aid of MABS Cancer Support.

The 2,200km route will take in Alicante, Zaragona, Pamplona, Bourdeaux, Nantes, Caen, Portsmouth and Bristol. George and 67-year-old Keith will start their journey on 31st May, camping along the way, hoping to complete their challenge in 21 days. MABS Fundraising Coordinator Wendy Grant said: “We are hoping for lots of support for Keith in this huge enterprise. And we will try to make sponsoring easy and convenient - collecting donations, sponsorship pledges as well as donations via social media.”

MABS cancer support is totally self-funded, dependent on donations for the services they provide. The recently opened new care centre in San Javier has a comfortable and welcoming feel and offers cancer sufferers counselling and other complimentary treatments.

The charity also provides respite care, transport to patients for medical appointments, and use of equipment in the home such as hospital beds, wheelchairs etc.

There is much work and preparation needed this week since it is just after midweek that the Sun ingresses and the Spring Equinox resounds through your starsign. This is an ideal time to do some sensible research for ongoing planning and to remove the unnecessary burdens that currently seem to be slowing you down somewhat.

Venus is very deeply involved with the energies of Uranus and Jupiter. This brings about a sudden change of mind connected with an affair of your innermost soul. A change of heart balances your turbulent emotions and centres you in preparation for taking the next steps, and these demand all your attention if all is to be in order.

Mercury takes a midweek conference with dreamy Pisces and a forward thinking Ceres. Whilst Mercury is there to ensure communication is certain and apt, Ceres is a governor of time, and signifies a rapid response needed this week, when you have specific and arduous chores to complete before you are just where you should be right now.

The Full Moon beckons you on to pastures new as you seem to be thinking that the grass may very well be greener on the other side. Change and new concepts are very much there for you on the current agenda, but you have to want them to make the difference that they can and then live in harmony with decisions that are of your making.

With the Sun touching on Mars anything is possible, but someone is standing in the way of what you really want to do right now. The Spring Equinox will see the Sun blessed in the seventh house of Aries, where even magic is possible if you will just let it be. Hold back on emotions and see what comes your way when you are deserving and ready.

Mercury ensures that you make the very best of things since it is high time that you bounced back into life once more. You may very well have been sorry for yourself and licking your wounds but it is high time to make amends by showing others just what you are capable of. You may even end up surprising yourself and starting a precedent.

Venus sextiles with Uranus and it would seem as if you have opened a can of worms. So much of the recent past deserves nothing more than elimination and resolve. You may have learned your lesson the hard way but it is time to face the minor irritating things that seem to crop up, since you are empowered and ready to make a difference.

You are so able to put so much into a nearing plan or project seeming to have boundless energy when it is needed. However although you do have the power to succeed, always remember that you will be doing the lion’s share of the work this entails. If you are happy with this then you know what you have to do, if not at least pause.

Beware of going too far in a situation which you will, in hindsight, figure wasn’t worth it. Your enthusiasm and intelligence has steered things along quite nicely, but since the Jupiter Direct you have been indecisive and unsure, two elements that do not bode well with you. Something isn’t right and it is getting too late to say so.

Much Sun energy was absorbed in the recent trine, but you do still appear to be waiting for answers before you make a fresh start. Your sensitivity and inner self seems to be holding back as things just don’t appear to be adding up right just now. Stalling for time right now best shows you your alternatives and pinpoints a plan B too!

Anniversaries

MANY OF my clients make contact with me just prior to anniversaries that they know are going to hurt them.

DATES AND times form reminiscence and they relive memories of the past, especially those who focus on their dear departed. Time heals and I have heard various manual calculations that help banish mourning and stave off grief; and they do not work. This is because we all have different phases of memories, and we do home in on the anniversaries of death and departure. Of course it is everybody’s right so to do. My own Mother died on Christmas Day which is hard to forget really; but I choose to celebrate the day each year, because it was what she would have wanted me to do. Other dates of passings to me are not essential. I have made a decision to celebrate other days anniversaries that connect me with my loved ones. My Father and I had a wonderful weekend together in rural Yorkshire before he died, and each year I celebrate the happy time we spent together then, on

those two days; in preference to the day of his funeral service.

As Spiritualists we know that this life is just one we will have, and that many of us have experienced others and will go on to do just the same. Thus death for us is not the end of life, it is the start of another one, in whatever dimension. Many of us therefore re-incarnated to be here, and in the warp and weft of time we do not have to mourn the passings of those who had quality lives and who passed over with the good intention of starting another all over again. Often, yes, we can shed a tear, and things can crop up that take us back to Nostalgia Lane. We can remember our loved ones whenever we wish, and this can help to avoid the trauma of having to endure dark days of the soul when we focus on death and its finality on a particular day of the year. Death isn’t final, it is infinite, and we have a part in it sometime for sure too, come what may!

Copper insoles heal chronic arthritis pain JEAN DAVIES, scheduled for hip replacement surgery after suffering with arthritis for 18 months, has been advised by her doctor that the surgery will no longer be necessary.

Feminine words with “el”

NO DOUBT you have rushed to this page this week in your anxiety to find out the answer to last week’s question – is the word “agua” masculine or feminine?

First let’s look at the evidence. The word ends in the letter “a” which makes it look feminine; also when we talk about cold water, for example we say “agua fría” which obviously suggests it is a feminine word. However, for “the water” we say “el agua”, using the masculine form “el” for “the”. This is very strange, and here are some other words that do the same thing. The word for “eagle” is “águila” which is the same for a male or female of the species. The word seems to be feminine, confirmed by the fact that the plural is “las águilas”. And yet the singular, strangely is “el águila”.

“El ama”, is another example of the same thing. We have “el ama de casa” the housewife, or “el ama de llaves” the housekeeper. Both of these jobs are associated with females, but this is not the point. “Ama” is a feminine word, using the masculine “el” for “the”. A further example is the word “hacha” meaning “axe”. The sharp axe is “el hacha afilada”.

Another word that behaves in the same way is “el hambre” (hunger). Here we do not have an “a” ending to make us think it is feminine, but if you are very hungry you say “tengo mucha hambre”.

And finally “el alma” the soul: “El Alma Herida” (the Injured Soul) is apparently the title of a very bad Mexican soap opera. Google is a wonderful thing.

Before I unravel this great mystery, I will just mention that these particular feminine words also take “un” instead of “una” for “a” or “one”, so one housewife is “un ama de casa”. A context for this might

be “there was one housewife and two nurses in the class” “había un ama de casa y dos enfermeras en la clase”. (Don’t forget though, that when you describe someone’s job using “ser” you don’t translate “a”: “soy ama de casa” - I am a housewife).

To understand the reason for this strange phenomenon our first guess would probably be that it is because the words start with the letter “a” (agua, ama, alma, águila) or the sound “a” (hambre, hacha).

However, this explanation doesn’t work as there are many words starting with “a” which do not behave in this way – “la actriz” (the actress), “la apertura” (the opening), “la hamaca” (hammock).

Well, my friends, I will try your patience no longer, here is the answer. It is all to do with the “beat” or emphasis of the voice when speaking these words. In all of our key words the beat falls on the initial “a” sound (Ama, as opposed to hamAca). The issue of beat or stress and how words link together in speech is complex, but in this particular instance there is a fixed substitution of “la” for “el” in both spoken and written forms.

You may think that this is not the most important or practical thing you have ever learnt about Spanish, and in one sense you may be right, but actually, we have just looked at one of the single most important things to understand about the Spanish language, and that is that where the “beat” falls in a word is of maximum importance in making yourselves understood.

Friendship Centre 10th Anniversary ON MONDAY 10th March, HELP Vega Baja’s Friendship Centre, celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a party in the meeting and tea-room of the Church La Parroquia Cristo, in La Regia. Danish Chamber Choir comes to the Costa Blanca

THE DANISH choir Lyngby Kammerkor, consisting of 26 skillful amateur singers from the Copenhagen area, will perform three concerts in the Torrevieja area in March.

The choir will perform a joint concert with Vivace Classical Choir in San Miguel de Salinas on Friday March 28th in Casa Cultura at 8pm: the joint closing number will be the Hallelujah-Choir from Händels Messiah.

On March 29th Lyngby Kammerkor unites with Crescendo International Choir in Palacio de la Musica in Torrevieja at 7.30pm for a joint concert. Lyngby Kammerkor will perform Nordic Romantic choir-music and Crescendo will

perform a mixture of 20th Century music: the two choirs will finale with something Spanish!

On March 30th Lyngby Kammerkor will perform their full Costa Blanca programme at 3pm in La Siesta Church, Torrevieja (right by the Norwegian Church in La Siesta).

The program for the Danish choir’s concerts in Spain will be Nordic romantic a capella music from amongst others Carl Nielsen, Ervard Grieg and Wilhelm Stenhammar as well as a number of Danish composers of choir music and also some works of British composers. All concerts offer free admissons with a bucket collection for charities at the exit!

Sergio Dalma fills the auditorium SERGIO DALMA has been likened to Spain’s answer to Michael Bolton, and after watching him get an entire audience on their feet and singing along to his songs from the word ‘go’, it was easy to see why.

by Keith Nicol Dalma comfortably conquered a packed Torrevieja International Auditorium of more than 1,200 people on Saturday evening, proving what a true pop star of today he really is. Although Raphael and David Bisbal also filled the Auditorium, their acoustic performances were easily blown away by the loud and raunchy, guitar led rock anthems performed by Dalma and his gravel vocal delivery. From the first moment he appeared on stage, many members of the audience were on their feet and on more than one occasion rushed to fill the front of the stage to shake hands, receive kisses, and dance and sing along with the artist before security implored them to return to their seats.

This was the first concert on the mainland of his Tour ‘Candore 33’ and before the concert the Councillor for Culture gave the singer a memento of Torrevieja and posed for photographs before hitting the stage. He sang a tribute to all the ladies for ‘International Women’s Day’, dedicating the beautiful song “Bella without a soul” to them. During his hour and a half on stage, Sergio Dalma said he was delighted because the audience stood up, danced, sang and hummed along to all his songs. He

noted that during a couple of his ballads, that it was the first time in his 25 years in the music business that the audience had come to the front of the stage and connected with him on such a personal level.

His repertoire consisted of songs from his new album plus his most popular numbers, including an encore of three additional numbers. Sergio Dalma certainly triumphed in Torrevieja offering a wonderful and memorable night on stage followed by a further half an hour signing autographs and posing for photographs with fans in the foyer after his concert.

HELLO AUNTY: I spend about 5 months throughout the year in Villajoyosa. I would like to take my UK laptop rather than use the local cyber café. Can you advice the best and most cost-effective way to connect to the internet? John.

Aunty says: Many companies, like Orange, Vodafone, Movistar offer ‘dongles’ to allow for roaming internet. Some offer ‘pay as you go’, others offer you 12-month contracts. Also, some town halls are now offering residents access to a WiFi signal.

Router problems HI AUNTY: I wonder if you could help me with a problem. I have Talktalk in the UK and had no problem with my laptop and router WiFi connection. Then I bought a tablet, into which I put my router information. Now, however, whenever I switch off my laptop or tablet and then switch on again, my router has all green lights, but neither of my devices will connect until I unplug the telephone connection into the back of my router and then plug it back in again. Talktalk of course says there is nothing wrong with my router as all the lights are green. I saw in a recent RTN article that you said that “Conflicts arise when two devices are given the same IP Address.” Is this my problem, and can you help me with it please? Sue. Aunty says: If all the lights are green on your router, then the router, like Talktalk says, looks to be functioning fine. If devices are not connecting then you have some form of conflict. However, if there is a IP address conflict between the devices and the router, I cannot think of a reasonable explanation as to how disconnecting the phoneline resolves this problem, as the phoneline connection will have nothing to do with the IP addresses the router assigns to devices connected to it! So perhaps you have entered the same IP address into both laptop and tablet - hence a conflict, hence why neither connect. Usually you can configure the devices to automatically connect using any ip address that is free. How you do this varies from different versions of Windows and which tablet you are using.

Downloading software HELLO AUNTY: I have recently upgraded my computer from XP to Win7. When I download free software from UK sites it downloads in Spanish: IE, Google Earth.co.uk, Adobe reader, etc. Is there anything I can do to receive English?

Aunty says: You may have your regional settings set up incorrectly. In control panel, there are options to change your

regional settings. If you make these ‘UK’, then you may download in English. The other issue is that many downloads are done based on your computers internet IP address. If sites see that you are connecting to the internet from Spain, it will offer you Spanish content.

And you also have to make sure you are actually using the UK parts of the sites: IF you can download from a ‘.co.uk’ site, that would be better than a ‘.com’ site

The ‘.com’ sites determine your location using your internet IP Address, and offer you content for that area. A ‘.co.uk’ site will offer you UK English content.

In the same way a ‘.es’ will offer you Spanish content, and a ‘.fr’ will offer you French content. Of course, things may also be different if you have a Spanish version of W7 installed. I just downloaded

Gadget Inspector Investigates: LED Universal Motion Sensor Nightlights

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio

How is your swing?

THERE ARE very few of us who have crafted perfection in the way in which we swing a golf club and there are even fewer who manage to retain the same swing from game to game. Nevertheless many of us manage to enjoy a reasonable round of golf and frequently score well despite our shortcomings.

So this raises the question - how important is the perfect swing and perhaps more significantly - is there such a thing? To the casual observer much of the game of golf looks very similar. You place a ball on the ground and hit it with a stick. As the great Seve once said “I hit the ball then find it and hit it again.”

Indeed that is how most youngsters envisage the game. Until technicalities and mechanics enter the arena, as parents and friends convince the novice golfer that training is required in order to ‘hone your swing’.

And so it begins, that enduring search for perfection.

ACHES AND PAINS? One factor that undoubtedly has an impact on our game as we grow older is our fitness. Strains and sprains cause us to favour certain muscles at the expense of others and so we adjust our swing accordingly. And yet despite the ravages of time, we have witnessed senior golfers of similar vintage to ourselves, score remarkably well in major competitions. If you are a single figure handicap player you probably don’t think too hard about the next shot. Conversely high handicappers are often too anxious about it. This often produces a faster swing than usual, and consequently a poor result. The general conclusion is that the mistake came from bad feet position or an inaccurate follow through. However it could be that the horrible shot was merely the result of excessive speed.

IS THERE A MAGIC FORMULA? So what is the answer and is there a simple routine that can be applied to enable us to secure some consistency in our game?

In order to get an insight into this I put the question to Campbell who is a professional instructor and has seen his pupils develop from novice to accomplished player with subsequent handicap reductions.

Your swing, Campbell, what goes through your head when you set up? Campbell - For me it is in two parts. First I analyse the shot I am about to play taking in to account wind, distance, elevation, and where I want the ball to land and how the ball will react when it hits the ground.

Then I select the correct club for that shot. Secondly I go through my pre-shot routine which consists of looking down the ball-to-target line and pinpointing some mark a few metres in front of me to help with aligning my clubface for the starting direction of the ball. I set up over the ball with a clear picture in my mind of the shape of shot I am about to play, relaxing and aware of my balance. From there I swing with good steady rhythm and commit to a full forward swing with a balanced finish.

What are you thinking? I want to keep my mind feeling fully confident in the shot I am about to play and that my decision is 100% correct.

POSITIVE thinking plays an enormous part in a successful round of golf.

Where do you place your feet? This depends on the type of shot and lie I have. In general I have my feet slightly wider than my hips with the ball somewhere inside my left foot again dependant on the shot/club in hand.

What mantra do you keep in your mind? Commit to the shot!

Where do you look? Always at the back of the golf ball At what point do you turn to look at the flight of the ball? When my right shoulder engages under my chin (momentarily after the strike) I allow my head to rotate to the finish position.

Great advice and very encouraging. However just in case it doesn’t all work out I will also keep in mind the words of Lee Trevino who said “No one who ever had lessons would have a swing like mine”.

Honda CR-V FUN AND POWER: Words that, for me, best describe the Honda CR-V. Fun because this allwheel drive vehicle can tackle most terrains while the 150bhp 2.2 litre diesel unit has enough oomph to travel from 0 to 60mph in a little over 10 seconds.

I’m testing the top-of-the-range £33,000 plus 2.2-litre four wheel drive version. As I look down the side panels I’m instantly struck by how this fourth generation model reminds me of the BMW X5. It looks grander, more striking and capable than its predecessors. I like the polished metal finish. Eldest daughter Harriett likes the way water jets clean the headlights at the push of a button. In fact this sports utility vehicle (SUV) is fitted with a number of luxury features including the power tailgate that makes light work of closing the boot, extremely easy to fold rear seats and a panoramic glass roof, all of which you can see in the video at testdrives.biz.

My test takes place in Dorset, Hampshire and Oxford as we decide to visit some artists who have opened their studios there. Interestingly the route is pretty much a straight run from Oxford down to Dorset and we are able to rack up just over 500 miles returning at best 39.7mpg at a constant 56mph. As temperatures drop to minus figures in the winter months it is reassuring to be driving a vehicle that is fitted with permanent four wheel drive, especially when visiting remote parts of the country. In fact on a number of occasions we find ourselves parking in farmers’ fields and the

CR-V makes extremely light work of such requests.

Hill descent is a useful feature too enhancing its capabilities when tackling such scenarios.

The black leather interior is comfortable and the power front seats are easy to operate, although the driver’s seat does seem to remember a different position on locking the vehicle. This is no doubt down to me not setting my desired position on the memory function. Similarly my wife and I find the radio frustrating because it refuses to play our favourite station, bypassing it at every request.

The automatic gearbox is smooth. The centre armrests front and back together with the blacked out rear windows add to the hint of luxury.
