MURCIA IS hosting two major sporting events this month, with a friendly basketball game featuring Spain’s NBA stars against a Great Britain team, which is sure to attract basketball fans from far and wide.

Murcia gets a new old train

Together, these two major events are expected to have a positive economic impact in excess of 1,000,000€, with 900 athletes and thousands of people travelling to the city. Once again, Murcia becomes the capital of sport in the region with two major events to be held in late August. The first of these is the Spanish Cycling Championships for Junior Men and Women plus the Masters series, to be held from 23rd to 25th August; this will be followed by the Spanish Basketball Team that faces the selection from Great Britain, on 28th August. Councillor for Sport, Youth and Tourism, Miguel Cascales, explained that “this type of event has great impact on both the hotel industry and in restaurants and trade, as it is estimated that among athletes, supporters and fans will account for 2,500 individuals enjoying more than 3,500 overnight stays at our hotels during the three days of the cycling championship and Spanish game day. The celebration of these two great events will enable the city to generate a direct economic impact of more than 1,000,000 euros!” The Cycling Championships is of great importance to the hostelry industry as I attracts more than which will gather more than 800 athletes from ages 18 to 69, from across Spain. The competition is organized by the Spanish Cycling Federation and Cycling Federation of the Region of Murcia, with the support of the Sports Department of the City of Murcia. Continued on page 6
