Together, these two major events are expected to have a positive economic impact in excess of 1,000,000€, with 900 athletes and thousands of people travelling to the city.

Once again, Murcia becomes the capital of sport in the region with two major events to be held in late August. The first of these is the Spanish Cycling Championships for Junior Men and Women plus the Masters series, to be held from 23rd to 25th August; this will be followed by the Spanish Basketball Team that faces the selection from Great Britain, on 28th August.

Councillor for Sport, Youth and Tourism, Miguel Cascales, explained that “this type of event has great impact on both the hotel industry and in restaurants and trade, as it is estimated that among athletes, supporters and fans will account for 2,500 individuals enjoying more than 3,500 overnight stays at our hotels during the three days of the cycling championship and Spanish game day. The celebration of these two great events will enable the city to generate a direct economic impact of more than 1,000,000 euros!”

The Cycling Championships is of great importance to the hostelry industry as I attracts more than which will gather more than 800 athletes from ages 18 to 69, from across Spain. The competition is organized by the Spanish Cycling Federation and Cycling Federation of the Region of Murcia, with the support of the Sports Department of the City of Murcia.

Housing for the homeless Local mayors and councillors meet to receive houses from Bankia as part of their re-housing project

by Keith Nicol THE PROBLEM of homelessness continues to grow around the Valencian community as more properties are repossessed accompanied by more disposed people heading to the area because of the kinder winter weather and local charity help provided. This week 18 homes were handed over to different municipalities as a start of a new scheme to utilise empty properties for the homeless.

Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon visitied Valencia this week to attend the formal delivery of these 18 properties, destined for families who have lost their homes as a result of evictions. The official act was presented over by the Regional Minister of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment with all 18 homes

provided by the social fund from Bankia, with one bound for the city of Torrevieja.

This week also saw the official signing of the deeds, over to the various municipalities, in Alicante City. This action is part of the cooperation agreement signed between Torrevieja and the Consul on housing. The City of Torrevieja now has 14 homes available in this social initiative, itself plus another 18 from the Patrimonio del Instituto Valenciano de la Vivienda (IHeritage Valencia Housing Institute) IVVSA, which are available to be processed.

Torrevieja’s Social Welfare Department announced that all interested parties can obtain information on how to ‘bid’ on these bank homes, in C/ Torrevejenses Ausentes No. 39 or those interested can contact IVVSA directly to send in your request.

Fake goods get rolled over

By Keith Nicol MORE THAN 10,000 fake goods, from sunglasses to watches, jewellery, handbags and DVDs were rolled over; and quite literally, by a steam roller. Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon said that the street value for these genuine imitations had an approximate valuation that could have surpassed 63,000€. Dolon was accompanied by the Councillor for the Police, Agustina Esteve, the Chief of Police, Vicente Gutierrez, and Lieutenant-Commander Guardia Civil of Torrevieja, Juan Jesus Ruiz, at Torrevieja’s Ecopark facility for the destruction of material from seizures in the street by unauthorized hawking and counterfeit materials, that have been seized this summer.

Torrevieja’s Mayor highlighted the excellent work being done by the Local Police and Civil Guard to eradicate illegal hawking, following the decision taken at the last Local Security Board, creating joint special operations to address the so-called ‘top blanket’ and increasing the number of agents of both security forces. Eduardo Dolon congratulated the Civil Guard and local police in Torrevieja for the high efficiency that is taking increasing control and surveillance over this summer along the main walkways, café areas and beaches of the town, to stop this illegal activity, which seriously harms local traders. In this way, the mayor said Torrevieja traders themselves are very satisfied by the increase of police in areas of the promenades, as well as offering greater security for citizens, is in itself reflected by an increase in the sale of products of commercial establishments in the town.

Rajoy faces Congress

Rajoy still hanging in there

by Jan Gamm SPAIN’S PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy faced a bruising onslaught from Congress early on Thursday morning as he attempted to exonerate himself and Spain’s ruling PP in the fallout of damaging revelations implicating his party in fraud and corruption.

Publication of information in Spain’s national newspapers regarding €47 million of illegally acquired party funds stashed in Swiss banks by PP ex-Treasurer Luis Barcenas, in jail since 27th June, prompted a congressional meeting to be called in the wake of threats of a vote of no-confidence.

Following a few minutes’ remembrance for the victims of last week’s Santiago de Compostela train disaster, Congress stepped straight into a combative grilling of Rajoy, to which he responded by flatly denying any wrongdoing.

IMAGE The Prime Minister opened his address with an attack on individuals who were “determined to damage the image of Spain by sustaining the public scandal of the Barcenas case.” He said that despite wanting to give an explanation and tell his side of the story, he had not made an appearance on the matter until now because the claims being made were “not credible.” The opposition immediately retaliated by accusing Rajoy of withholding information and thereby tarnishing Spain’s reputation himself.

Rajoy acknowledged that in initially supporting Luis Barcenas “as one would support anyone suffering persecution,” he was wrong, and that he “was cheated,” adding that his mistake was in “trusting a false innocent.”

However, he insisted that Barcenas’ accusations were false and half-truths, and antici-

pated that the PP would be exonerated of double accounting and hiding any crime. He also said that none of the party officials accused had been paid bonuses. When interrupted

by Opposition Leader Alfredo Rubalcaba he said: “We will speak out, Mr Rubalcaba. Do not threaten me with a motion of censure.”

Mr Rajoy admitted sending messages of support to Mr Barcenas between May 2011 and March 2013 but emphatically denies all other allegations of collusion.

THE OUTCOME The PP was handed a clear mandate by Spanish voters at the end of 2011, therefore Mr Rajoy and his party enjoy a clear parliamentary majority. Rajoy still shows no willingness to resign his post despite Rubalcaba’s persistant shouts: “Mr Rajoy, you must go!”

Thursday’s performance was unusually forthright: Spain’s prime minister is known to be an awkward public speaker yet he has managed to hold onto his position and his party’s congressional majority despite revealing almost nothing new in a meeting targeted at demanding answers.

Rajoy’s tenacity has enabled him to survive this political crisis for the immediate future.

However, as most Spaniards doubt his version of events (a recent poll revealed only 14% of Spain’s citizens believe that he and his party are innocent in the Barcenas affair), this may not be enough to win public support.

On Wednesday, Socialist Deputy Leader Elena Valenciano said her party’s aim was “…two-fold - that the prime minister tells the truth and that he quits his post,” adding: “If we don’t get that [on Thursday], we will keep insisting and fighting for it.”

PP Deputy Leader Maria Dolores de Cospedal has been summoned to appear before investigating Judge Pablo Ruz on 14th August.

Marrow for Mateo

WHEN TWO-month-old Mateo was diagnosed with childhood Leukemia his two-year-old brother Luke was immediately tested as a possible bone marrow donor. When Luke’s marrow was found unsuitable, the boys’ father, journalist Eduardo Schell, launched a frantic campaign appeal to find a suitable match. The resulting wave of compassion and offers of donation are a tribute to the power of social networking. Dozens of high profile sporting and entertainment celebrities including Rafael Nadal, Rudy Fernandez, Cesc Fabregas, Fernando Torres and a host of others have offered their support: they lead 72,000 # MedulaparaMateo tweets; 287,000 website visits to www.medulaparamateo.com and 5,000 Facebook likes in the race to find ‘Marrow for Mateo’ and save a beautiful baby’s life. Possible donors now number 696 and hundreds have confirmed an appointment for testing.

Application period for municipal grants to university students

by Keith Nicol EVERY LITTLE bit counts in this age of financial management and with that, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, announced that from Thursday, August 1st until November 2nd, inclusive, the term will remain open for applications for Student Scholarship and higher education college grants. The sum on offer is maintained at 100€to help students from families with economic difficulties, such as the long-term unemployed.

The mayor stressed that, given the current difficulties, the city of Torrevieja’s aid not only keeps young students in the town, but also the increased in recent years. From 2007 to 2012, college scholarships have been granted in excess of 2.712,000 euros to nearly 4,000 students in the town, which is a huge economic effort in social welfare.

Studies that qualify for scholarship remain

the same, and students who also benefit from the Erasmus Scholarship or undertake their studies in foreign universities may also apply for the scholarship. Courses need to be equivalent to college and exceed 300 hours of course module time.

Students will also see an increase on the amount of scholarship granted in relation to their scores obtained during the course, depending on the number of credits for the course in question. The municipality also offers transportation aid for who are studying at least 15 kilometers from Torrevieja. This additional amount can be for a maximum of 240 euros, in relation to evidence of having used public transport.

Anyone interested can download the application form of scholarships through the website http://www.ciaj.es. The completed application should be checked over in the premises of the Centre for Information and Youth (CIAJ) and left in the PROP office.

The Greens denounce insecurity of Casa Los Balcones

by Keith Nicol CASA LOS Balcones, is still in danger of falling down, according to a recent press release from Torrevieja’s Green Party. This week the Greens denounced the insecurity of the structure of the Casa de Los Balcones. They say it’s due to insufficient bracing of its facades and the lack of measures to support the roof of the building, in the same way that has not developed any action to avoid the entry of rainwater inside, that could aggravate and accelerate deterioration and end with its imminent collapse.”

They are blaming the condition of the building on the ruling PP council saying that they should have taken some action, even though, according to the council, the municipality do not own the building and don’t have the authority to do so!

The Greens, say that “Actions carried out that that can be seen from the outside have been limited to the settlement of the security perimeter fence surrounding the plot, land clearing and shoring of the main facade, leaving the rest of the building without any protection, including protected elements mounted on the roof, as the tower and the viewpoint.”

The Greens are asking for the owners to take action to shore up the building and are calling for a new plan of action by Torrevieja’s Cuncil, requesting the intervention of the municipal officers in the field to verify the actions executed and check whether they conform to the technical reports and the resolution adopted by the Town Planning.

Murcia’s green cars MURCIA IS turning even greener, transport wise, with the addition of two more ecofriendly vehicles as Murcia Transport delivers two new green vehicles to the City to facilitate with inspection work.

by Keith Nicol Murcia Transport delivered the two new cars this week to the Department of Traffic and Transportation. Headed by Javier Iniesta, the two vehicles are both Fiat Puntos, to help the department with work on the municipal inspection program.

These two green cars are propelled by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) which has a fuel pollution index, below the standard Euro 5. These vehicles are part of the improvements that have been introduced in Murcia that include the choosing CNG specification when it comes to contract managing the urban public transport system.

Murcia Transport has a fleet of 28 new buses, all powered by compressed natural gas and has operated them on nine bus routes since October 1st, 2012.

The mayor indicated that “Murcia is a prize in itself, because the Spanish Basketball Federation choose our city, of all of the cities wishing to host a round of the selection”, and pointed out that Murcia is a talisman for the Spanish team.

Alonso puts his foot down SPANISH F1 star Fernando Alonso, who dropped to third in the championship rankings following last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, is unpopular with Ferrari bosses after making caustic comments about his car. The twotime champion was asked what he wanted for his birthday as he turned 32 on Monday, to which he replied: “Someone else’s car.” The Italian team’s president, Luca di Montezemolo, later responded to Alonso’s remarks by saying: “All the great champions who have driven for Ferrari have always been asked to put the interests of the team above their own.” Rumours have linked Alonso to a possible move to Red Bull following Mark Webber’s departure at the end of the season.

Santiago de Compostela rail disaster: one week on...

by Jan Gamm A WEEK after Spain’s worst train disaster in decades in Santiago de Compostela in which 79 people were killed, 66 injured passengers are still in hospital, 15 of whom are in a critical condition.

The disaster stunned the country, with Spanish royals and political leaders joining hundreds of people in Santiago de Compostela’s 12th Century cathedral on Monday evening to mourn the dead.

HUMAN ERROR Tuesday’s initial analysis of the train’s data recorder suggests that ‘human error’ was responsible for the train hurtling off the track and slamming into a concrete wall at twice the 80kph speed limit. The train driver, 52-year-old career train engineer Francisco Garzón, known amongst his colleagues for his cautious reputation, was released from hospital into police custody on Saturday while still recovering from a minor head wound. He is accused of multiple counts of manslaughter and if indicted could face up to 12 years in Garzon prison. A four-year sentence is applicable for each of the victims of the crash. However, under Spanish law arrives a defendant cannot be given a sentence of more than three times the maximum for the most serious offence at the court with which he is charged.

Early investigation reveals that Garzón, who says he was ‘distracted’ at the time of the derailment, hit the brakes too late on the approach to a dangerous curve. He should have been applying the brakes 4km before reaching the bend but failed to do so. It has also emerged that he was using the telephone at the time of the accident as well as reading an iPad document.

In a Santiago de Compostela court preliminary hearing on Sunday, Garzón stated that he received a call from a Renfe official controller on his work phone in the cabin, not his personal cell phone, advising him what approach to take toward his final destination. This corporate phone was lost after the accident - the judge has requested information on calls and messages to the telephone company concerned. Garzón has been released but will have to report to the court weekly and is banned from leaving the country without legal authorisation for the next six months pending further investigations.

BRAZIL The final findings against Garzón could affect state-owned Renfe’s consortium bid for a €13 billion contract to build Brazil’s high-speed rail link from Rio de Janeiro to Sao Paulo. The terms of the tender exclude any company that has suffered a high-speed rail system accident in the preceding five years to the tender. In response, Renfe President Julio GómezPomar says the crash took place on a stretch of conventional track: “It did not happen on a high-speed line, nor did it involve a high-speed train, therefore it is not a Spanish high-speed rail accident.”

HATE MESSAGES Garzón continues to receive death threats and hate messages via social networks and is to receive counselling for trauma. Relatives of the victims have started to collect the personal effects of their loved ones from a holding centre near Santiago, where the local community struggles to return to normality in the wake of Spain’s worst rail disaster in 40 years.

Not all bad news

SIX-WEEK-OLD Teresita Medina is thought to be the youngest and among the luckiest of survivors of last Wednesday’s Santiago de Compostela train crash. Teresita and her family escaped from a hole in the wall of their carriage: The baby was cushioned from the blow as she lay in her mother’s arms and escaped with just a small scratch. Moments before the train derailed and smashed into a wall, Yesica Castro had been walking the carriage with baby Teresita to stop her crying. Just as she sat down, the train flew off the track.

One moment sooner – or later, when the baby would have been laid in her carrying seat, would have been fatal. Yesica said: “It was as if a guardian angel was watching over us…”

Love your passport

by Jack Troughton THE BRITISH Embassy has warned expats to take care of their passports, check expiry dates and to renew the essential travel document in good time.

Numbers of emergency passports issued by British Consulates in Spain rose by 11% to over 6,000 last year – more than a fifth of the world total according to the Foreign Office.

In May alone this year, 493 emergency passports were issued to British nationals in Spain – including 280 as a result of theft, mainly bag theft, car break-ins, burglary and pick-pocketing.

Yet of the remaining 213 travel papers issued for other reasons, 14% were because full passports had expired.

Many people with a passport approaching its expiry date fear renewing it will mean they might ‘lose out’ on remaining validity they have paid for.

However, the truth is this will be transferred to the new passport, up to a total of nine months.

British residents in Spain can be caught out for a number of reasons if they let their passport expire. People suddenly need to travel for a number of reasons; a death or sudden illness of a loved one, through to a job interview abroad.

CANCEL According to the embassy, one expat was offered an interview in Germany

but discovered his passport has expired; others have been forced to cancel a holiday of a lifetime.

And one British national received a warning from the Passport Service after suffering five lost or stolen passports. He decided to keep his new passport safe by storing it in the freezer – unfortunately, the document got wet and he had to apply for another emergency passport.

Will Middleton, the new Consular Director for Spain, advised people to check when passports expire and make a note to renew them up to nine months earlier.

He said: “Living overseas, it can be easy to think that you don’t need your passport or forget to renew it.

“But is you need to travel at short notice, getting an emergency passport is costly – currently 116€ - and time consuming, which can add further stress to what may already be a stressful situation. And you will still need to renew your full passport when you get back.”

Applying for a new passport is simple. The application form can be downloaded from www.gov.uk/overseas-passports completed at home and sent off with the required photographs. The issue of a new passport currently takes a minimum of four weeks from when the application is received.

Baby adoption at a standstill

AROUND 200 families in the region waiting to be assigned a baby for adoption are facing a four to five year waiting list. Only five cases were registered in 2013 to mothers who gave up their children. Some desperate couples have resorted to international adoption, although the high costs involved are inhibitive. The Social Welfare Department says that the economic crisis does not appear to have influenced mothers to give up their babies - rather the pressures of caring for a newborn seem to be responsible for the five mums who relinquished their children for adoption this year. Social authorities in Spain see the controlled adoption programme as a preferable alternative to the desperate acts some mothers will resort to, such as the woman who disposed of her unwanted baby down a drain earlier this year, or another who tried to sell her child on the street. In the first half of the year there have been 81 adoptions of children: 53 domestic and 28 international.

Cruise ship poisoning HUNDREDS OF sick passengers with suspected Salmonella poisoning on the ‘Empress’ cruise of the Norwegian fjords operated by the Pullmantur line were locked in their cabins for almost a week without having their condition diagnosed and without adequate food and medicine. According to the daughter of two of the passengers her parents began to feel ill last Saturday along with around 200 others, despite cruise management admitting to only 47 sick travellers. Just two doctors were assigned to the 1,800 passengers on board. Many of those who fell sick were Spanish.

You couldn’t make it up!

IN THE last couple of weeks I have read articles and seen photos of garden refuse being deposited next to rubbish bins in the Costa Blanca - now I understand why!

Last week my friend, who lives in Rojales, asked me to bring my pick-up truck to his house.

He had cut up a large tree and wanted it taken it to the Municipal Tip in Quesada, opposite the Water Park. We loaded up the tree parts and drove to the municipal tip. Upon arriving, a man in the hut came out and said: “Permit.” We asked him what he meant and he said that one needs a permit to tip there. Nobody may deposit any rubbish there without a permit, available from the Ayuntamiento at Quesada. So we proceeded there.

A woman at the town hall desk asked for identification but my friend didn’t have it on him, having just been wearing shorts to load up the tree (hot work!) I had my papers, so I showed her them. She said that someone from the Town Hall would come to the premises and inspect the tree cuttings within the next fortnight. I explained that the tree was already loaded on my truck and she could look out of the window and see it for herself. I told her that I actually don’t live in Rojales and she asked me why I had then shown her my documents and I explained that I am the owner of the truck.

She responded that we would have to take the tree cuttings away and unload them at my friend’s house, and he would have to bring his own documents relating to where the tree was located, to get a Permit. Then an official could come and inspect the tree and make sure that the rubbish was actually coming to the tip from a Rojales address. This would apparently take two weeks to achieve.

We felt like just unloading the whole lot at the nearest basura bin, but being responsible citizens took it all back and dumped it in the garden again, waiting for action from the authorities. Perhaps other people may take note and plan accordingly.

Gutless muggers I AM very, very sad to announce two more muggings in La Zenia.

What a shame to have such a beautiful area blighted by brainless and gutless muggers.

My daughter Alexandra and her friend Sallie were both threatened by knifepoint by two muggers. The muggers approached them from behind as they walked home from Cabo Roig in the early hours of 24th July. The two muggers arrived on a moped and demanded the ladies to empty the contents of their bags. And one of the muggers was brandishing a knife.

Their description: aged approximately 16 years, both with a foreign accent but speak some English.

We had heard about local muggings but were under the impression that it was a lone mugger. Be warned they can operate in pairs.

The two muggers separated the ladies and threatened them both individually.

This has caused major distress and trauma.

Please be vigilant... take taxis home from nights out or walk in large groups.

The Police are increasing their vigilance and this obviously needs to continue.

Hoping that this helps others to avoid a similar dreadful fate and thanks for listening…

Paul: A frequent visitor to beautiful La Zenia

Saying what we feel HAVING JUST read Pamela Dawson Tasker’s letter regarding the winter fuel payment I felt obliged to reply, if only to thank her for saying what most of us feel.

The original reason for making the payment was commendable but why was it not thought through? It was never going to work as a blanket payment, Robin Hood at least concentrated on the poor; he didn’t include the Sheriff of Nottingham as well.

So much money has been dished out to people who frankly do not need it, while deserving cases have to plead for enough to carry them through the winter months. Short of a means test I frankly do not have an answer but surely common sense should tell us/ them that The House of Lords, for example, probably have most of their members receiving the payment - I would say this is not really needed. The main difference between the well off and us is that they accept the payment as an annual perk - we budget for it!

A job well done

We moved to Spain mainly for health reasons, the sun in particular, and a healthy diet and life-style which has certainly helped us both. We do not have a villa, we have a mobile home on a camp site and yes it becomes extremely cold in the winter. Whether you use gas or electricity to heat your home, they both cost money and I am not ashamed to say we await the bank statement that shows the winter payment has been received meaning the pension will stretch a bit further.

A thought for all: A large proportion of elderly pensioners who really suffer in the cold weather in UK have probably fought not only for their country but hopefully for a better life. Now some of them have to decide whether to eat or heat, which is not a choice anyone should have to make.

Should it come to pass, God forbid, if there are protests or marches, count me in - but not in the winter!

Inspiring an overseas vote

LORRAINE HARDY of Labour International meets with the Electoral Commission next week to discuss the problem of engaging with overseas voters ahead of important elections.

Around 5 million British citizens live outside the UK – including some 1.4 million in Europe – yet only between 13,000 and 19,000 are registered as Overseas Voters, representing less than half of 1% of British expats around the world.

Lorraine, Secretary of Labour International’s Coordinating Committee, which represents Labour International members around the globe and two colleagues – Dalvir Singh from Germany and Dick Smith from France – meet with the commission on Tuesday.

She said a lot of people in the UK might be “disillusioned with politics” but most were on the Electoral Register even if they did not exercise their right to vote.

“Even if you live here in Spain you can register as an Overseas Voter in the area in which you were last on the electoral register,” said Lorraine.

RIGHT “Currently there is a limitation of 15 years in which you can exercise this right, despite the efforts of Harry Shindler and others to rescind this. Why can’t we have MPs to represent expats – like in France?”

And she said issues to put before the Electoral Commission included registration as an Overseas Voter, postal voting – “currently postal votes are sent out from the UK as close as four days before an election making is an impossible choice for Overseas Voters” – and the use of proxy votes. Also open to discussion is a system of American-style ‘early voting’ where a party is chosen rather than a candidate; on-line voting, and voting in person at British Consulates or at the British Embassy.

Spaniard now the world’s oldest man FOLLOWING THE death last year of Jiroemon Kimura from Japan, considered to be the world’s oldest man at116 years old, the title now falls upon 112-year-old Spaniard Salustiano Blázquez Sánchez, a flute player from Salamanca born in 1901 who settled near Niagara Falls in the US in his early thirties. Speaking to The Guinness Book of Records, Sánchez said the secret of his longevity was to “…eat a banana a day and take a daily dose of analgesics.” He married the love of his life Pearl in 1934 and they went on to have three children, seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and five great, great grandchildren. Despite his great age Sánchez is still very active and he enjoys gardening, crossword puzzles and card games.

PSOE brands Gibraltar queues ‘barbaric’

by Jan Gamm JUAN CARLOS Ruiz Boix, PSOE mayor of San Roque in Cadiz, has branded queues at the departure checkpoint from Gibraltar entering the Spanish mainland as “barbaric.”

“Unacceptable, this is unacceptable!” he said, “Forcing those who want to enter or leave Gibraltar to pass through an ordeal of seven to eight hours in a queue in the summer heat is intolerable. That is easy to understand for everyone but the PP!” The mayor’s outburst follows incidents at the Gibraltar/ Spain border this week where the Guardia Civil checked the documents of every one of 10,000 cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles leaving Gibraltar for Spain, causing six-hour tailbacks and forcing the Gibraltar Police to create holding areas on nearby beaches.

Ruiz Boix went on: “This is the PP’s idea of communication, strengthening ties, bridging differences through dialogue…? The PP is punishing Gibraltar by strengthening controls but is also punishing thousands of citizens in the province and beyond.

“In the year and a half that the PP has been in government, relations with Gibraltar have steadily worsened, resulting in this debacle at the mainland checkpoint, where citizens passing between Spain and the Rock are reduced to ‘a walking refugee camp, with water being distributed between cars and children and the elderly being evacuated by ambulance’. A genuine outrage! An absolute nonsense rejected by the Socialist Party!”

ERRORS Ruiz Boix pointed out that there are presently 6,000 people travelling daily in and out of Gibraltar for work, joined by thousands of tourists, concluding: “This is the culmination of

a policy of errors, of seeking confrontation rather than dialogue, and increasing the distance that exists today between Gibraltar and Spain: a political nonsense that punishes and humiliates its citizens.”

This Spanish border guards are effectively blocking access to the mainland and bringing the Gibraltar checkpoint to a standstill. The move follows other incidents: Spanish police allegedly opening fire on a jet-skier in British waters; various incursions by Spanish police boats; Spanish Air Force jets roaring over the Rock at low altitude…

The border incidents prompted a call from Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague to Spanish Foreign Secretary Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, requesting the immediate cessation of obstructive and unnecessarily stringent checks. However, less than 24 hours later, Garcia-Margallo was stressing that Spain’s obligation was to retain strict border policies to prevent smuggling, adding that “further exhaustive checks would be carried out when necessary.”

Drivers and passengers swelter in 30º plus summer heat

Wish lantern causes Montgo fire EIGHT TOURISTS from the US and Ireland who caused a fire in the area of the Montgo National Park when they launched a wish lantern illuminated by a naked flame have been detained by police since the early hours of Wednesday morning. The culprits, aged between 35 and 44, were spending their vacation in a private rented villa in the area. They lit several wish lanterns after dinner on Tuesday evening and the wind blew them across a nearby pine forest, catching the tinder dry foliage alight shortly after 11pm. Neighbours smelled the smoke and alerted the fire service and some local families with children deciding to evacuate their homes: luckily the fire was under control by Wednesday morning. Around 1,000 metres of pine was destroyed and the Javea/Denia link road was closed for the duration of the emergency. The tourists have been charged with arson.

A hair-raising donation for PCN DAVE BLACKIE’S sponsored haircut held at Carmen’s Bar in San Luis on Tuesday 23rd July turned out to be a fantastic day for all.

Dave decided that after many years of sporting long hair it was now time for a change and that all the money raised would go to the Paul Cunningham Nurses charity.

Loyal friends at the San Luis Bowls Club cheered Dave on, raising a total of 212€ for the charity, organised by Jean Hepehi.

Murcia gets a new old train MURCIA has a new, old train, but don’t expect it to be pulling up to a station near you anytime, as this one from 1867 is purely for show.

by Keith Nicol It is the only surviving one of four early narrow gauge locomotives that circulated in Spain in 1867.

The engine was built in Britain for Huelva railway line linking the Buitrón mines and San Juan del Puerto. The train was partly restored by School students from the municipal workshop, who added the finishing touches to the project’s detailing of the restoration. The engine will soon occupy the large roundabout that accesses the beginning of the road, Carretera de Alcantarilla..

This restored museum piece can be enjoyed by everyone in the coming weeks as the locomotive recovers its splendour, as it

returns to exactly what looked like back in 1867. This is the locomotive Victoria, one of the two oldest models that have preserved in Spain and is being restored by the workshop students from Forja de la Escuela Taller ‘Centro Accesible para Jóvenes’.

Hawthons & Co. from Leith in Scotland built the locomotive. The factory sent four engines called; Vitoria, Maria Teresa, Sotiel and Beas.

Two were scrapped in 1953 and another on an unspecified date. Victoria was the first locomotive of a total of 19 who worked the mines.

This was the first railroad built in Huelva.

The Councillor for Employment, José María Tortosa, said he had “enjoyed the cooperation of the Asociación Murciana de Amigos del Ferrocarril (Association of Friends of

Railways in Murcia)”, whose members have advised the school workshop throughout the restoration process.

Presently the workshop students are busy painting the locomotive and are adding the finishing touches so it can be installed in the rotunda at the start of Carretera Murcia-Alcantarilla.

The last phase that requires completion before its opening, is scheduled for September. Workshop students will then add their

skills of Masonry, Electricity and Gardening, to adapt the roundabout to host the locomotive before the end of the year. The first documented narrow gauge locomotives began circulating in Spain in 1867. Prior to the Vitoria returning to Murcia for restoration, the locomotive was sent to Valencia, where it languished in a junkyard in the town of Silla.

It was then recovered by the city of Murcia and later was transferred to the municipal nurseries of Sangonera la Verde.

Keeping an eye on the time

A PLATINUM, diamond and gold watch pin, ‘The Eye of Time’, designed by Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali has sold for £96,000. The three-inch watch is eye-shaped with a blue enamel iris, the original made by New York jewellers Alemany & Ertman in 1949 as a gift for Dali’s wife. Several copies were made of the watch – this one owned by an Italian family. It was expected to sell for a modest £12,000 at auction by Dreweatts of Newbury, Berkshire.

James Nicholson, head of jewellery at Dreweatts, said: “The Dali brooch is a fantastic piece… I knew there would be a lot of interest. It was very exciting in the sale room and moving very, very fast, everybody was shouting down the telephones trying to get their bids in from the USA, Europe, the UK and the Far East. Eventually it sold to a private collector in the US and the vendor was absolutely thrilled and amazed.”

Weather watching in warm wet Warwickshire

WELL, THE royal baby has been born, the anniversary games to remember 2012 have been run and those Westminster ‘workaholics’ have packed up for their paidfor-by-us eight week summer holiday (us wage slaves feel mightily cheated as we return from just a fortnight away from work); so what’s left to talk about?

The mighty media circus is about to enter the socalled silly season so I guess I’ll just have to concentrate on that all-too-British of conversations: the weather.

Back in March, The Spectator’s very own Rod Liddle was complaining, in own inimitable style, about weather hyperbole: “There have been four weather hyperboles already so far this year; warmest January, or warmest day in January ever, wettest February, coldest March. There are so many criteria for awarding a hyperbole sticker that almost every day of the year could qualify.” There’s going to be more Rod, how about this being the ‘monsoon-ist of summers’?

Little did he know what else was coming; he was too busy keeping warm in arctic temperatures. He wrote, “So, snow in March? An unheard of experience? Nope, it happens every other year, more or less and that’s in the south of the country. Last year at this time we were just entering a very mild and rather pleasant phase and the warmest April on record! Global warming!

We’re all going to die!”

He is right of course (the hyperbole - not the dying bit, hopefully) and when snow did indeed encroach into April this year a new ice age was on the cards. But, as I said above talking weather is our national subject of choice and even sceptical Rod would agree it has been mad this July.

As I look out across the fields that three weeks ago were short, scorched brown and patchy are now three

feet tall (and still growing) and as green as, well grass, I suppose. This miracle has been achieved by the new British season of monsoon. The days are long, hot and wet. You could imagine you’re in Singapore.

Okay, here is the pattern: it gets very sunny and hot, hot, hot. Then it rains, like you’ve never seen rain before, and huge lakes are formed - this in itself is handy, bearing in mind that last month the Met Office boys & gals were predicting a drought on the scale of 1976.

And then the sun’s out again blistering us with 33+ degrees. My back yard is like a mini-rain forest; goodness only knows what’s lurking out there in it. I won’t venture forth until I can afford proper PPE - a full environmental suit at the very least! Ooops, I could be heading into hyperbole there, eh Rod? On June 19, the BBC’s science editor David Shukman gave us the following: “Treat the following news with caution. And, whatever you do, don’t blame the weather people. Or me. But the next few weeks in Britain are likely to be - wait for it - cooler than average. Sorry.”

More weather hyperbole? I know not but in June we were told that the next 5 -10 summers could be rather cool affairs (we don’t blame you David). Basically the weather-news was: this July is going to be a damp squib, so don’t bother getting the electric fans out. Within weeks we were basking in totally-tropical temperatures (oops, gone into weather hyperbole again).

Mind you, Rod Liddle did have a point when he mused: “I suppose weather hyperbole enables journos to write long articles entitled: why are we experiencing such extreme weather phenomena? We’re not, though. You’re just writing about it more. And I suppose, as a consequence, I am too.” Me too Rod, but what else is there in the silly season? Katy Price?

Classic Motorbike exhibition ‘RETORNO’ in Mazarrón TODAY, FRIDAY August 2nd a special exhibition of classic motorcycles opens in Puerto de Mazarrón.

by Keith Nicol The exhibition ‘RETORNO’ features more than twenty bikes built between the 1950s and 1970s, restored by mazarronero restaurateur Antonio Paredes. Notice of the event was made public this week by the Councillor of Celebrations and Fiestas, Isidro Coy and the restorer himself, both of whom will attend the opening of the exhibition. Doors open at 10:30pm in the mall located on Avenida Tierno Galván number 35, beside the so-called ‘pizza zone’.

As explained by Antonio Paredes, the exhibition also “has about a dozen motorcycles belonging to citizens of Mazarrón that are in perfect working order after being restored. These vehi-

cles date from the 50s and 70s and behind each of the bikes is a story, such as ‘Sleep bike’. Named because his owner said he had an accident and that he had fallen asleep while driving. Hence the name.”

Isidro Coy, commented that “this is another free activity that we promote through the council to extend the range of leisure and free time activities. The exhibition will run until Sunday 25th August, every day from 6.00pm until midnight. The councillor encouraged residents to “not miss this event” and thanked Antonio Paredes for “his collaboration so that we can enjoy these bikes that represent the work of a lifetime, as all are in perfect condition and work, despite the passage of time”.

Maria de Villota wedding surprise FORMULA ONE driver Maria Villota has married her partner Rodrigo in Santander in a low key ceremony following a romantic surprise proposal. De Villota suffered horrendous injuries in the opening lap crash during a test at Duxford in Cambridgeshire last year, losing her right eye and her sense of taste and smell. Since then her approach to her recovery has been inspirational – she jokes about the eye patch being the latest thing in fashion accessories: “I went through a very bad time after the accident,” said Maria, “but gained inner strength and positivity. And I discovered that unconditional love is above everything.” While it is unlikely that Maria will race again, she still hopes to contribute to safety testing.

Night Run attracts 500

By Keith Nicol LAST SATURDAY more than five hundred athletes gathered at Erosiones de Bolnuevo to participate in the twentieth edition of the Carrera Nocturna, the Night Run For Life, organized by the national association ‘Todos Contra la Droga’ and sponsored by the City of Mazarrón. Once again, young and old alike enjoyed a day of sport along a special itinerary designed by the Department of Sports along the popular promenade Erosiones de Bolnuevo. The top three finishers in each category received a trophy, while the fourth and fifth ranked were presented with a medal.

Top surgeon at cancer seminar

PLASTIC SURGEON Elaine Sassoon, one of the world’s leading experts on reconstruction after breast cancer, is a special guest at a Costa Blanca seminar.

by Jack Troughton Organisers Jalon Valley HELP has organised the conference ‘Breast Cancer and Reconstruction’ at Benissa on Saturday 14th September as part of its annual ‘Think Pink’ initiative.

It is hoped to raise awareness by inviting interested charities from all over the region to meet Elaine and nurse Ruth Harcourt of Norfolk group ‘Keeping Abreast’, who will talk about the history of reconstruction after surgery and explain the available options.

Elaine , who was educated at Harvard in the USA and trained at University College Hospital in London, is currently based in East Anglia and is the author of an inspiring book ’The Boudica Within’ which examined “the extraordinary journey” of women after breast cancer and reconstruction.

Elaine Horton, President of Jalon Valley HELP, said the charity had achieved something of a coup in getting the surgeon to fly to Spain and local hospitals and caner charities were all taking part in the event.

“The message is if we can all work together we can make a real difference – that’s what it is all about,” she said.

WORD “It is a huge undertaking for a small charity like ourselves but we need to get the word out to cancer patients living in the area.”

She added: “Elaine is a world renowned surgeon in the area of breast cancer and reconstruction and she travels the globe to lecture.

“And with Ruth, she has agreed to fly out here to talk to people about the history of breast reconstruction and what the options are for treatment and reconstruction.”

The seminar will also mark the launch of Jalon Valley HELP’s ‘Have a Heart’ campaign. The brainchild of one of its volunteers, it means the supply of heart-shaped cushions to people who undergo surgery – the cushion is placed under the arm and helps the patient more comfortable.

“This is someone who has had breast cancer herself and knows the score. She initiated the making of these cushions – they are very successful and we have a craft group making them now!”

The seminar is free but entrance is by ticket only as seats are limited to 212. The day starts at 10am for 10.30am and it is planned to finish by 2.30pm. To book a place call 625 349 599.

SAN MIGUEL de Salinas is a small town nestled between the Orihuela Costa, above the salt lakes of Torrevieja with far reaching, stunning views over the countryside, stretching beyond to the beautiful Mediterranean.

NOT MUCH is officialy known about the history of San Miguel de Salinas, although it is widely believed that the first building documented was of hermitage construction in 800AD, later to be converted into a convent and monastery.

In the 1600s the original parish church was built and dedicated to Saint Michael, or San Miguel. This was later rebuilt between 1689 and 1719. In 1829, the town, like many others around that area, suffered an earthquake which destroyed large parts of the area.

Moving forward into modern times, the town became an independent municipality in 1955. Since then San Miguel de Salinas has developed into a thriving community with a large street market held every Wednesday morning.

The popularity of the town has gone from strength to strength with many holiday makers and many people setting up home full time. The Blue Flag beaches of the Orihuela Costa are less than a 10 minute drive away, and with a great selection of locally-based restaurants, bars and shops it is easy to see why people choose this great location.

There are excellent championship golf courses nearby including the famous Villamartin course (The Mediterranean Open has been held here) - all within easy reach.

Thanks to excellent links to the AP7 it is very easy to discover, so whether shopping, sightseeing or looking for a good night out, San Miguel de Salinas has it all on offer.

Do you have adequate power surge protection?

DO YOU have your computer plugged into a surge protector? Is your air conditioning system protected from power surges? And do you think you have adequate protection during an electrical storm? The reality is that many don’t know enough about power surges. What are they? Where do they start? How can I protect against them? And what the heck is a Surge Protection Device?

A power surge is a sudden and unwanted increase in voltage that causes damage or can destroy electrical equipment. They crash hard drives and fry printed circuit boards; components that exist in practically every piece of electrical equipment.

Power surges come in two forms: the first form switching on the electricity supply network by high powered electric motors and transformers. In addition hundreds of transient spikes occur daily from devices in the home. The second is by lightning and electrostatic discharges, more common in rural properties but also known to strike properties on urbanisations.

Each year about two million flashes of lightning occur on the Iberian Peninsula. Lightning can strike a building directly, the ground nearby, or even overhead power lines miles away and cause power surges. Mains electric cables, TV/Sat and telephone cables which enter from the outside of a building act as conductors for

lightning strikes and can facilitate the way for power surges.

When a power surge strikes it shows no mercy and will strike every plugged in appliance on a search and destroy mission. Protection for the whole house can only be provided by a Surge Protection Device (SPD) connected to the entire electrical installation. This is the only way to safeguard everything in the home.

A SPD works in one of two ways: either by diverting the current generated by the power surge directly to earth, or by disconnecting the mains supply preventing the power surge passing through the equipment. Air conditioning units are very prone to damage from power surges as well as computer equipment and TVs. Most air conditioning and TV satellite installation companies will not guarantee their equipment unless it is protected by a SPD. An RCD does not provide protection against power surges. A multi-outlet power strip fitted with an inbuilt basic surge protector can only provide minimal protection for a limited number of items.

Surge Protection Devices are recommended for properties with sensitive and expensive electrical and electronic equipment. They are also strongly recommended for installations in rural areas supplied with Solar Energy Systems exposed to high risks of lightning.

Make sure you protect your expensive electronic equipment.

ALTHOUGH CLODAGH left the family home two years ago and phoned the other day to report a new relationship I continue my writing of books and articles started back in 1969 to help as many expatriates as possible with their gardening and lifestyle problems.

Recent local tours and visits and articles in recent editions of English and Spanish newspapers, including RTN, have highlighted the increasing difficulty of buying inexpensive, fresh, ecologically grown produce here in Spain if one does not grow one’s own.

More and more agricultural land is being abandoned even though it is unlikely to be built on for an alternative income.

More and more produce in Spain is despite Spain being a major exporter.

Buyers from countries to which Spain exports , including Russia, are setting high standards and expect the best even when prices are low.

Ecological produce is scarce in most local markets, including Spain’s best covered market in Valencia. A visit last week revealed that there are now just two small stalls with very few varieties.

Some shops have stopped selling ecological/organic vegetables and fruit as they found it difficult to segregate them and ensure no cross contamination by residual chemicals on produce grown using chemical fertilisers, insecticides and fungicides.

Prices may well rise in future years as a growing worldwide middle class market looks to buy better quality produce.

So it is worth thinking about growing more of your own foodstuffs even if only on a small scale as illustrated. By starting now one can have crops for autumn and Christmas harvesting.

Consumers and users rights in Spain THE MUNICIPAL Information Office for Consumers OMIC WE FREQUENTLY receive consultations regarding possible abuses made by companies and businesses against consumers.

Our firm provides advice in this field, in issues such as bank preference shares, mortgage loan floor clauses, claims for goods in poor condition and in general on those practices which violate the consumers’ and users’ rights when they have relevant economic consequences.

In these consumer assistance offices, they could provide the following services: Information, help and guidance to consumers to exercise their rights The reception and registration of claims and complaints from consumers and users and referral to relevant entities and agencies The details and addresses of main institutions, public or private, of interest to consumers Therefore if you as a consumer need to claim for your rights our firm can help you, but if it is a very small complaint, we encourage you to denounce also through OMIC.

Barcenas to stay in jail SPAIN’S HIGH Court Criminal Division has made the decision to retain ex-Partido Popular Treasurer Luis Barcenas in prison, where he has been in custody since 27th June. It is considered that, should he be released, he could abscond or destroy evidence linked to criminal fraud investigations involving the PP’s financial activities over the past 20 years. The Court also rejected a request for discharge with a bracelet locator on the grounds that it would be “practically ineffective” (although it can locate efficiently it would not prevent criminal activity or the ability to alter or destroy evidence).

Everything is getting better, unless you are over 65 A REPORT today (Telegraph 29/07/13) is showing that the amount of bankruptcies in the last year has dropped since the 2009 credit crunch began, in every category that is except the over 65’s.

RESEARCH BY accountants Wilkins Kennedy shows 5,401 people over the age of 65 were declared bankrupt last year, an increase of 14pc on 2009.

This is hardly surprising when you look at how people in retirement have been hit following the financial crisis: Falling interest rates Poor annuity returns Increase in health care costs Overseas property bubble burst Pensions crisis Couple that with the cost of living increases that do hit pensioners hardest i.e. food, fuel and energy, all with high rises in the inflation consumer price index basket. It makes ‘making ends meet’ for today’s pensioners not an easy task.

What is vitally important is that getting the most out of capital reserves when retired is now more important than ever and knowing what to do is getting more and more difficult. From August this year even the good old ‘National Savings’ rates have been reduced.

Even Ernie is tightening his belt with the average return from Premium Bonds being reduced to just 1.3% (way less than inflation in the UK and Spain). On the face of it now, in my reckoning buying lottery tickets are a better bet than Premium bonds – at least it is only 7 Million to one to win the big prize where as it is over 40 BILLION to one to scooping £1million with Premium Bonds.

Do not despair though as there are investments out there that can produce a modest return to supplement income without taking unnecessary risks designed to give pensioners a real rate of return above inflation.

TALENTED SCULPTOR Thomas Anton is exhibiting some of his sensual and tactile work in marble and alabaster at Benidorm Town Hall.

By Jack Troughton THE EXHIBITION ‘Sensuality’ comprises of 15 key stone pieces taken from different periods in the German artist’s career and showing off various aspects of the human form.

The exhibition includes his first work ‘Temptation’ in blue alabaster; representing snake and the Garden of Eden – and inspired by a real life snake he spotted.

And also on show at the Espai d’Art is ‘Venus II’, a female torso in marble completed just four weeks ago.

Thomas began studying sculpture at the University of Altea four years ago. He is a dentist by profession and he runs Clinica Dental Costa Blanca in Benidorm’s Old Town.

The largest piece is ‘Venus’, carved from a 350kg piece of marble containing hollows where there was once quartz.

“It’s a very special stone, you can blow actually through it in places,” he said. “The stone was lying around at university and I asked if I could use it – the teachers said I had to submit a design first, which I did and they gave me the marble.”

ROSE One of the most unusual works is ‘Foetus’, sculpted from rose coloured alabaster. It is particularly magical in the exhibition because it is placed by a huge glass wall and changes colour in the light. “It is very nice to view with the sun shining on it,” added Thomas.

And ‘Corset’ is the one unpolished piece created with a hammer and chisel and still showing the The free exhibition is Thomas’ fourth show of his career and was officially opened on Tuesday by Councillor for

Tourism and Deputy Major Gema Amor.

“This is very impressive work by a highly talented artist,” she told RTN. “We like to use this area of the town hall all year to feature the work of local artists, but usually they are exhibitions of paintings.

“It is very important for us that we have a German artist showing his work. Not only is he an international resident of Benidorm but it illustrates how people from all over the world come here and make the town their home.”

Sensuality is being exhibited until 28th August at the town hall and can be viewed on weekdays between 9am and 2pm.

A ROUGH guide to hotel star rating in Benidorm.

1 STAR BUDGET HOTELS: BASIC ROOMS with a bathroom or shower. Don’t expect a huge range of amenities such as lounge, pool, television, room telephone, safe or reception services.

Generally small rooms, many without balconies or sea views: although basic this can be a good option if on a budget weekend. You may be pleasantly surprised in this type of hotel if you ask to see your room before payment.

Expect dining to be simple Spanish meals with limited choice sometimes only on a bed and breakfast rate or room only. Great for a cheap weekend: try the Mar Bella up by the Police Station.

2 STAR HOTELS: Acceptable accommodation with en-suite rooms. Many will offer better services and a small pool. Rooms may have a television, air conditioning, bigger restaurant, better food with more choice, usually on a buffet basis. Many two star hotels in good sea front locations are unable to gain a 3-star due to restraints with the building but do offer a 3-star service with good quality but smaller rooms. The Mar Blau Hotel in the old town and award winning Rio Park are very popular 2-star choices in Benidorm.

3 STAR HOTELS: Here you will get a larger hotel with better facilities such as TV games room, pool, gardens or sun terrace, 24 hour reception, lounge, separate bar. A restaurant with a wide choice of food served buffet style for breakfast through to

dinner. Rooms will all be en-suite, usually with full bathroom facilities, TV, room safe, balcony, air conditioning, telephone and perhaps WiFi. Servigroup offers an excellent range of 3star hotels such as the lovely Nereo.

4 STAR HOTELS: Large, formal hotels usually offer a choice of bars and large restaurant with buffet service - some offer ´A La Carte dining too. Expect outdoor and indoor heated pool with gym facilities too. Rooms are well appointed with balcony or terrace. All will provide air conditioning, perhaps room service, large bathrooms with hairdryer and toiletries. Many have a mini bar or fridge but not all. Expect satellite TV with a good range of channels. For a nice 4 star All Inclusive Hotel take a look at the Monaco Sandos Spa Hotel.

5 STAR LUXURY HOTELS: The best, offering a high level of personal service, luxury and high end premises in great surroundings. Expect luxury rooms with mini bar, trouser press, Fine quality furnishings and specially designed luxurious beds and fine bed linen.

Bathrooms will be of the highest quality with luxury toiletries and towels. World TV and pay-per-view films available: 24 hour full room service: A selection of bars and dining areas with award-winning food. Expect a bell boy service and 24hour concierge. The largest 5 star hotel in Benidorm is the Barcelo Asia Gardens ideal for a weekend celebration. The best exclusive Hotel in central Benidorm is well worth checking out, the 5* Hotel Boutique Villa Venecia at the top of the old town.

Benidorm launches ‘Royal Baby’ cocktail TO MARK the arrival of the new royal baby, HRH Prince George, the Red Lion bar in the heart of Benidorm – a favourite with the Brits - created a cocktail in his honour.

THE NON-ALCOHOLIC speciality was named ‘Royal Baby’ and the first to try it out was the Mayor, Agustin Navarro and his Deputy Gema Amor.

The fruity number contained melon, banana, pineapple, grenadine and a splash of non-alcoholic peach liqueur. Bar manager Alfie certainly went to town and decorated the bar with Union Jack flags and giant posters of the newborn with his parents.

The Mayor and his deputy gave a congratulatory speech on behalf of the town which reinforced the close ties held between Benidorm and its biggest and most important visitors – the Brits. Even the Spanish press and media attended this historic event.

Previously the Mayor had invited the Royal couple to Benidorm for their honeymoon, which they politely declined. Who knows, now with a family in tow they may yet take him up on his offer!

by Kath Poole PEOPLE FROM all over Spain flooded into Benidorm this, over 80% from outside of Valencia province making this years the most successful to date and again leaves a positive sign for Low Costs future years in Benidorm.

Undoubtedly the highlight of this years festival was Portishead who were playing on the Budweiser stage on Saturday night. The combination of Beth Gibbons magical voice and the stunning visuals surrounding the stage created something incredible.

Equally important is the presence of the festival on the Internet it’s massive growth in social networks. During the last week the official festival website has received over 69,000 visits, the official YouTube channel has clocked up around 422,000 views and the official Facebook page has 55,000 likes and their Twitter account has 21,130 followers. No doubt this will mean that next year not only will there be a ‘Full House’ again, you will need to buy your

tickets early to guarantee getting in as it’s popularity continues to grow.

World’s highest waterslide opens in Aqualandia THE WORLD’S highest waterslide attraction opened in Benidorm’s Aqualandia this week featuring two slides at 33 metres and 28 metres respectively. And thrillseeking addicts say the slide ride sensation is “awesome!” The ‘Verti-go’ is a ‘capsule’ where the rider begins the slide encased in a sealed capsule positioned over the drop.

OVER THE last few weeks I’ve been explaining how new legislation is making it safer than ever to let out your property in Spain. I hope my message has been clear and if you were in any doubt about letting out your property, that you’re feeling a little more confident now.

I KNOW the difference that the new laws are making because I see it in practice every day. The nature of my work brings me into contact with some landlords who have had bad experiences and who ask us to approach the courts for help. In this week’s article, I share one particular case with you.

Mr A owns a property in Spain which he had been successfully letting out. However, with a new tenant, problems were emerging. Without warning or any explanation, the tenant stopped paying the rent. Mr A, who required the money to pay his own rent, came to me for advice.

I explained that it was possible to challenge his wayward tenant through the courts. Mr. A decided to go ahead. It took less than a month for his case to be

heard and the decision was made by the judge that the tenant had only ten days in which to pay what he owed or leave the property. If neither happened, then eviction would follow.

True to form, the tenant did not show. Attempts were made to inform him of the court’s decision through a registered letter and postings on the court’s bulletin board. However, there was no one in the property to receive the letter and no sight of the tenant during the ten days notification period.

This did not slow down proceedings. Once the ten days had passed, the process of eviction could go forward, even though there had been no contact with the tenant. It was sufficient that attempts had been made to inform the AWOL tenant of the court’s decision. The court proved good to its word and a

further court ruling enabled the eviction to go ahead.

When the eviction day arrived, it came as no surprise that the tenant was nowhere to be seen. As our knocks at the door remained unanswered and the tenant had had new locks fitted, we were left with no option other than to bring in our own locksmith to open the door.

On Mr A’s behalf, we took possession of the new keys and were able to return his property to him.

Ironically, this case was particularly speedy because the tenant did not respond: had the tenant engaged with the court the process would have taken longer.

As it was, Mr A was relieved to have his property returned to him in a relatively short period of time, just three months in total. His next tenant would be very carefully vetted before taking hold of the keys.

Corpore’s beach workout GUYS AND girls keeping fit at the Corpore Fitness Sports Clubs are enjoying al fresco fun at the beach during the summer months – although there is still a price to be paid in sweat.

By Jack Troughton QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS from the Benidorm and Finestrat clubs provide the motivation while those taking part bring a good sense of humour and a touch of competiveness to a gym built on sand.

Cross-training sessions are held on the beach at La Cala Finestrat twice a week – Tuesdays and Thursdays - and a Wednesday morning is given over to beach volleyball and football. Sessions start at 9.30am.

And after around 45 minutes of a workout – including time to take on all important liquids – what could be more refreshing than a quick dip into the crystal clear waters of the Med? There is normally between 25 and 30 people taking part in the sessions which were launched in June and continue until the end of September. The summer activities have proved to be highly popular – every time Corpore updates its Facebook site with new photographs of the beach training it is rewarded by a flood of ‘likes’ on the social media network.

OUTDOOR The sports club has found the outdoor training has been hugely successful this year and provides a break from the host of activities provided at both gyms – rewarding customers with something a little bit different and enjoyable.

It is also an opportunity for people to show off all the hard work they have put in at the gym throughout the year

and make a statement to the rest of the world: “Look what Corpore has done for me!”

However, it really is a workout. Beach work is tough and the instructors are at hand urging people on to try and get them to the next level.

There is also a team spirit among those taking part; many of the sports are edged with a strong flavour of competition which helps keep things interesting, and helps everyone stay

focussed when the going gets hard.

Life travel Bewitching Lucena AS YOU drive up the long curving rise to Lucena del Cid on a Monday morning you can see that they have the same washday as the Brits. Terraces in the apartment blocks are festooned with drying clothes, like some lower-class flag day.

According to the Nomenclator Oficial del Estado, the official list of Spanish town names, the town’s full title is ‘Heroica Villa de Lucena del Cid’, a title awarded to the town during the 14th Century for its ‘valour against the absolutismo carlista’. It is supposedly known locally as ‘La Perla de la Montaña’, but the locals would say that, wouldn’t they.

As you drive up the mountainside toward Lucena it looks quite large, but when you get there you find it’s actually very long and thin, wrapping itself along the mountain.

Driving in is like driving through a canyon, with its tall houses rising up the hillside on the left and dropping down to the valley on the right. Everywhere there are steep steps and arches which make you think that, if you lived there, you wouldn’t want to forget a pint of milk when you do your shopping and have to walk all the way back to the grocers.

Lucena is one of those places where you keep taking back alleys and vertical flights of stairs and suddenly end up back where you started without even trying to get there. Being built along a hill that nice little one-storey cottage you see suddenly turns into the top floor of a five-storey building.

As ever in these villages, almost anything of any interest is focused on the main square, in this case, the Plaça d’Espanya. The town hall isn’t exactly awash with tourist information; one leaflet and a badly photocopied street map, but it’s more than you get in some places. It’s worth nipping in, though, to have a ‘butchers’ at the beautiful

mondernista tile-work on the ground floor.

On the opposite side of the square, the peaked arches take you back to medieval times and are perfect examples of calles partidas, streets where the first floor extends over the ground floor to create a shady, arched walkway. Next to them the doors of the Parish Church, the Iglesia Nstra.

Sra. de la Asunción, glow as if they’ve just been prepared for a Brillo advert. These beautifully restored examples of metalworker’s art are made of thin sheets of brass where the nails fixing them to the doors create intricate designs.

On the opposite side of the square is a beautiful fountain with ornate modernista decoration, floral motifs intricately worked in iron with six big brass water spouts gushing fresh water from the mountains.

There are some other good examples of modernista (Spanish art nouveau) just off the square. Above the door of San Isidro, 5, is a lovely example of the Green Man, a design element much used in modernismo but which harks back to medieval and even pagan times, and it can be found in many of the earliest churches in Northern Europe.

Almost opposite, at Calle Duque de Tetuan, 4, Comestibles J. Segura is an excellent example of a late modernista tiled shop sign. (Nearby, the Carniceria Jesus-Mari could well be a mother and son operation.)

If you wander the streets you are often rewarded with excellent views. From the mirador on Calle Medico Nebot there are superb vistas down the valley through the pinecovered hillsides and across patches of cultivated land dotted with white casitas along the tumbling river. To your right you can see the row of cypress trees, which almost

always indicate the entrance to a village cemetery.

While I was wandering the streets of Lucena on a freezing January day I spotted something that made me laugh and showed a wonderful sense of ingenuity. I saw an old lady splitting logs outside her house and beside her she had lit a fire in one of the shallow braziers that the Spanish historically used beneath a table to provide warmth while they were sitting around it – and was also responsible for a high mortality rate due to fires and fumes. In the open air the heat would dissipate rapidly but this clever old dame had up-ended a rusty old metal bucket with the bottom knocked out to act as a chimney. The whole contraption looked like a witch’s hat on fire but radiated heat wonderfully.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish -42 Quedar and Quedarse THERE ARE certain concepts in any language that are very difficult to translate or to explain in other languages. English is full of weird expressions that we just take for granted, but when we come across difficult things in Spanish they often don’t stick in our minds.

WE’RE GOING take tackle one of these beasts today, namely, the verb “quedar” and its reflexive form “quedarse”. Both forms have quite a large range of meanings, so I’ll just focus on some of the most common ones and see how we get on.

We’ll start with the reflexive verb “quedarse” because in some ways it’s the easier of the two. The most common use of this verb is to mean “to stay”. For example: “Cuando voy a Gales, me quedo en la casa de mi madre” (When I go to Wales, I stay in my mother’s house).

“Quédate aquí un momento” (Stay here a moment). Also “quedarse con”, as well as literally meaning “to stay with” also means “to keep”, so when you want to tell someone to “keep the change” you can say “quédate con el cambio” or more formally “quédese con el cambio”.

The verb “quedar” on its own, however, is more difficult to translate directly and has a much wider variety of meanings. It can mean “To be left in a state or situation” for example “Quedar viudo/viuda” (to be left a widow(er) or “quedar sin hogar” (to become/be made homeless).

Very similar to this is to idea of “remaining”. For example “Quedan cuatro personas en el bar” (there are four people left in the bar) or “Queda poco (tiempo) para llegar” (there only a short time left

before (we) arrive). We also talk about “quedar” when referring to appearance. For example: “El jersey me queda grande” (the jumper is big on me); “El color azul me queda bien” (the colour blue suits me).

We also use “quedar” to refer to location, and in this sense it can be used as an alternative to “estar”. “¿Dónde queda la iglesia?”

“Queda cerca de mi casa.” (It is – situated – near my house).

By far the most common use of “quedar” however is when we make arrangements to meet up with people. We might say to our Spanish friends “¿Quedamos para tomar algo?” (Shall we meet up for a drink?) Also “¿Dónde quedamos?” or “¿A qué hora quedamos?”

(Where or What time shall we meet?). This can work with other tenses and people, for example “Manuel ha quedado con Silvia a las ocho” (Manuel has arranged to meet Silvia at 8 o’clock). I would go so far as to say that “quedar” is one of the most useful, and yet one of the most untranslatable, verbs in the Spanish language.

And finally, we can use “quedar” to refer to a decision that has been made. Sometimes after some sort of rambling discussion we may hear: “¿Entonces, en qué quedamos?” (So, what have we agreed then?) In my experience, that often leads to a repetition of the whole conversation.

I suppose I should add that in 2008 Gates stood down as Microsoft CEO and now devotes himself full time to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a world-wide charity, which may be a sort of penance for making more money than Croesus or a genuine desire to help the poor while keeping enough to live on. Whatever, it does make the book essential reading for anyone seeking wisdom from the world’s most extraordinary entrepreneur.

Aunty says: There are a number of ways to print the file names of a directory. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory for which you want to print or save the listing. Press the Shift key while right-clicking on the directory. Select Open command window here from the popup menu.

At the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter: dir > print.txt A file called print.txt is created in the directory.

When you open the file in Notepad, or in your favourite text editor or word processor, you will see the same directory listing you would see in the command window using the ‘dir’ command alone.

Or you can use a program such as: Directory List & Print.

OMG! It’s coming around again!

ONE OF my hardest jobs as I browse around the gossip columns is what to leave out, but when I read this first item it was always going to be the top story, even although I have brought the subject matter to the column several times before.

August is already upon us and before the month is over the wonder that is the X Factory will be right there ... before you’re very eyes … Again! Sharon Osbourne, Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh will bring their style and panache to the proceedings and so will begin four long months of … ahem! I won’t complete the sentence as the word I thought of might burn a hole in the page.

What this is all about is viewing figures. Last year a mere 9.3 million peeps cancelled the many more sensible things they could have done with their time to watch James Arthur do his stuff. 9.3 million viewers is the lowest since 1995, and today’s story is about Simon Cowells reaction to this dramatic fall in numbers, a reaction that confirms to me how desperate things are getting back at the office.

I stopped watching the programme four years ago when they turned the ‘glitz’ dial up to full, and this very same subject has reared its ugly mug once again. Fact 1: Last year Simon Cowell was in the US running another one of his factories and made all the mentoring decisions by phone. Fact 2: Viewing figures are down. Solution: Have the mentoring meeting on Simon’s yacht in the middle of the Med. And yes folks! … That’s what’s going to happen!

Diana Vickers (2008), made a timely contribution to this subject last week when she said: “…it used to be a lot more organic … it wasn’t showbizzy or celeby … now it’s more about the live audience and the comedy and the entertainment value.” Flying in your guests to spend some time on your yacht in the Med is ‘glitzy, showbizzy, and celeby’ too, but be careful Sy, as wanting to show the whole world what a big boy you are is the mark of a very lonely man ... Give it all away mate! … Make you feel better…

LAST WEEK Jeff Bridges was being interviewed by E!, a top US magazine, when out the corner of his eye he saw actress Jennifer Lawrence hurrying towards him. Caught on camera you see Jennifer stop and turn away, then go on up to him say, “I’m so sorry for interrupting you,” then adding, “Oh my God, I’m like, your bigg est fan.” The clever E! journalist put the mic up to Jenny’s face and you heard: “I loved The Dude character in The Big Lebowski,” … aaah bless.

Baby fever gripped the nation last week with shedloads of well-wishers, including the Muppets, who made a short video for the happy couple in the way only they can. Miss Piggy says to Kermit “Kind of makes you want to have a Royal child of your own … can’t you just hear the little pitter patter of tadpole feet?” to which Kermit replies: “Tadpoles don’t have feet,” before making a hasty exit.

Speaking to the Radio Times sports presenter Gabby Logan claimed she was once asked by a top BBC producer to change her style of dress as it was ‘too glamorous’. It seems he pointed to her high-heeled boots and said “You don’t wear them when you do the dishes, do you?” to which Gabby replied “do you want me to look like I’m doing the dishes…? I’m not here to look like a housewife.”… Love U Gabby.

Three years ago Lady GaGa turned up at the MTV Video awards show wearing a dress made out of raw meat to protest against the U.S. military’s ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ policy for gay service members … and where will she make her first public appearance after hip surgery? Yes indeedie, LGG will be on the show in August to help promote her new album ARTPOP... Love U 2 Gee Gee! Not so famous is our next and final subject Luisa Zissma. Luisa is the girl who just missed out on winning this year’s Apprentice, but apparently her straight talking attitude has gathered attention, and enough of it to rub out how unpopular she was with the viewers. It is now rumoured that Luisa is to get her own baking show … Just what we need … another show with cooking in it.

The I International Blues Festival ‘Bay of Mazarrón’

By Keith Nicol NO SOONER has the San Javier Jazz festival finished than an International Blues Festival springs up: this time in Mazarron.

It opened last night to rave reviews and continues tonight and tomorrow with the main attractions being Jay Kaye Band plus Michael Van Merwyk and Delta Boys, who will be the highlight of the big concert on Saturday August 3rd.

The I International Blues Festival ;Bay of Mazarrón; Puerto de Mazarrón filled with good music for the next three days by holding several concerts, among which that takes place on Saturday August 3 in portable bullring Playa Grande and that will mean the finale to a schedule that has come from the coast of Murcia with activities and concerts, not only held in the town, but also in Aguilas, Cartagena and Totana.

Tonight, Friday, August 2nd there is a small launch party, at 8.00pm in the Municipal Archaeological Museum at the Roman Salt Factory. Tonight’s show features a double bill with the music will Txus Blues and Jose Bluesfinger who have managed to give a twist to this genre, filling their songs with humour and positively, something rarely associated with this genre.

Two hours later on Friday at 10.00pm, Sergio Novo and Fernando Beiztegi again show their mastery of the Blues on a stage located in the new marina of Puerto de Mazarrón. Entry is free and it offers a new opportunity, to enjoy the best in blues.

Tomorrow, Saturday August 3rd at 10.00pm, the venue changes again to the portable bullring at Playa Grande, with the focus of this festival concert being Americans Jay Kaye Band plus Germans Michael Van Merwyk and the Delta Boys, who are the stars of the event. They will be joined by the Spanish Stop Blues Band, Ñaco Goñi, plus Txus Blues and José Bluesfingers. Get on yer bike Monthly cycling tips, advice and routes CYCLOGICAL CYCLE ROUTE 17: QUESADA TO LA MURADA WE LEFT the shop at Quesada and headed for Benijofar, turning right at the town square (cobbled area) and passing through Benijofar. At the roundabout for Rojales we turned left, cycling over the bridge to the next roundabout, straight across and just followed the road to San Fulgencio where we turned left at the roundabout and followed the road past La Marina Urbanisation.

Following the signs for Elche, the road is relatively straight and good. Past the petrol station on your left the road becomes a dual carriageway with a cycle track on the left. We cycled on this track until we came to the next roundabout, turning left here onto the CV851 and following this road for approximately 1km before turning left.

Once on this road we followed it until we saw the sign for Realengo: we turned

down this road, following it right into the village of Realengo, turning right at the junction and cycling along this road for about a kilometer. However, it is necessary to cycle on the main road up and over the bridge as they are making the new high speed train line and the old road is closed. Once over the bridge, we turned left at the roundabout and took the camino road, which goes all the way into Albatera (running alongside the N340). We stopped here in Albatera and had a coffee and tapas at one of the many roadside cafes.

Ready to go again, we passed through the town and at the edge of town turned right onto the CV871 heading for Los Vincentes (Approx.

10kms) turning right at Los Vincentes and cycling the last 2km into La Murada.

The main street in La Murada is full of restaurants, bars and cafes so you are spoiled for choice of Menu del

dia. Watered and fed, we headed back for Los Vincentes, following the road straight on passing through Benferri and Orihuela. At Orihuela we picked up the signs for Bigastro and cycled home through Bigastro, Jacarilla, Benejucar, Algorfa and finally Benijofar, turning right at the traffic lights and heading back towards Quesada.

This is a beautiful cycle route with lots of gorgeous views of the mountains and hills.

Total Cycling time: 6 Hours Total Distance: Approx 90 Kms. Summary: Beautiful Scenic route.

However, we had to use the main roads a couple of times.

The difficulty in understanding is far greater for those souls who have made their transition, I can tell you. Though it is hard to cope with the loss of a loved one we continue a life here on Earth; whilst many in Spirit find it hard to come to terms with the fact they are no longer living on Earth. Many cannot accept their own death, and move to their space in the Spirit World slowly, often reluctantly.

Very often those deceased are too close to the Earth plane, where they really do not belong, by choice, because they are concerned about those they have left behind; and how they will cope. If the bereaved they

A client once came to see me and I told her that I could see a wonderful ice cream sundae. I always believe in saying exactly what I see, and that’s what I saw. She burst into tears and cried out to her deceased husband. I knew she was strong, and I went on to describe the sundae because somehow I knew that it was relevant to her. I described a Knickerbocker Glory complete with Chantilly cream and a cherry on the top. My client had met her husband when he was a student working in a soda fountain to help him through college. They always loved ice cream, and made it a pact that when either of them should pass over that they would send each others favourite sundae as a test to the Medium. Almost immediately I saw a Banana Split topped with raspberry sauce. My client continued to cry and I got to feel the symbolism. Had she had died first my client would have sent her departed partner a Banana Split, but he had sent to her, her favourite, the biggest Knickerbocker Glory, fresh from the Spirit World. Tears over the messages of love then ensued, poured through in either direction because my client knew, at long last, that her husband was safe in the arms of Spirit, and that he had proved it to her.

Do not give up talking to those who you love up there.

Maybe they can’t communicate as well as they could, but they will learn by receiving your cheerful messages and find a way of replying to you. Love never dies, but sadly people do!

Karen S. Don’t you mean great worries? I cannot think of anything so Universal as the love of Spirit. Not all can take it, but what Spirit gives is something very special. They do not work for us, nor us for them, but they are there for us when we need help, and they are pioneering in their way to help us to help ourselves. This takes faith admittedly, but if the average person in the street fails to believe in their abilities it is not the fault of Spirit, and such people should go away and believe in something else…but believe in something, hopefully starting with themselves. The connection with Spirit is amazing, and yes it may be hard to tune in initially but it is free, non judgmental and inspiring, and people should get what they deserve, or more, from those set of comforts alone. I hope that they do. I hope that you do too.

If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it, but do take a long and hard look at realistic changes which spur you on, and then scare you into some kind of compromise. Be sure, because when you are good and ready then so you can be!

Just because he’s Number 1 Noel’s world of golf

THE 142ND Open Championship will long be remembered for the quality of the golf played and the golf course. Congratulations to the R & A and Muirfield for providing a true test of links golf. The reward was that we saw a true champion emerge and one who behaves as we would like to see all of sports elite performers. Phil Mickelson is a real gentleman of golf and a great role model for all who wish to come into golf and play with honesty and integrity. What a shame that cannot be said about the World number one golfer: Tiger Woods.

The troubles of Tiger have been well documented over the years and we do not want to go down that road again but is he now ‘bigger than the game of golf’ - or are the sponsors so powerful that the authorities are terrified of upsetting him?

Any man or woman who gets to the top echelons of their chosen profession has a duty to behave in a manner that does not bring the sport into disrepute yet seemingly Tiger Woods is immune to punishment for appalling behavior on the golf course. I refer in particular to his continual spitting. At The Open, in the final round in particular, he appeared to spit after every single shot. With hundreds of millions of people

watching all over the world what we have to ask is this the image we want to send out to those people we are trying desperately to get into our sport? I think a very resounding ‘no’ is the answer.

I am well aware that spitting is not seen as bad in some parts of the world but the majority of people are disgusted by this sickening habit as evidenced by the number of people who have spoken to me about it since The Open finished.

Yet with Tiger it is not just the spitting that is the problem. There are the temper tantrums where clubs are thrown; bunkers are damaged; turf hacked from the fairway and rough and the ever repeating use of the ‘F’ word that many of us also find offensive. Now Tiger is not the only offender but he does seem to be the player with the highest profile.

So is he bigger than the game? It seems it is getting near to that and it is high time officialdom did something to stop our sport degrading to the likes of football where poor conduct is commonplace.

Nobody is bigger than the sport whatever their name and those in charge of sport must ensure proper punishment is dished out to those who continually

behave in an unacceptable manner. Monetary fines are not enough. The punishment has to be much more than that to be effective.

Two runs separate La Manga and Alfaz

By Keith Nicol ON SUNDAY 28th July, in the soaring heat, just outside of Benidorm, friendly rivals Sporting Alfaz 2nd XI Cricket Club played host to La Manga 2nd XI in a league match. After some friendly banter during midday tea and bacon butty, the clash of the titans began at 1.00pm with Alfaz winning the toss and asking La Manga to bat first.

La Manga’s openers made slow but steady progress against Alfas hostile young bowling attack on a fast bouncy wicket with La Manga declaring at tea on 208 runs for 7wkts of 43 overs. Alfaz, like La Manga started their innings cautiously and with La Manga piling on the pressure, the breakthrough came in the 7th over when Phull clean bowled the no.1 batsman McInstry. This just bought the big hitting danger man, Amir to the crease, after a few lucky escapes he started to do what he does best, hitting boundaries all over the park. However, both these wickets were lost within runs of each other thanks to a superb bowling spell by Panchal (3 wkts for 32 runs). J Roper continued to keep Alfaz on top, making 34 runs before Panchal bowled him also. Then some fine combined fielding from Ravat and Phull had Cooper run out on 38 runs, it was now anybody’s game!

Alfaz needed under 50 runs to win with plenty of overs left and were edging closer to the victory target when things got even worse for La Manga as they went down to 9 men! No the Umpire did not send them off; the players had to leave due to work commitments. That left the exhausted 9 men of La Manga

Ready to conquer Kilimanjaro

By Jack Troughton THE SUMMIT of Kilimanjaro is the challenge facing 11 Javea mountaineers when they set off for Tanzania on 11th august.

The group, all members of climbing club CEX, will climb the 5,900 metre peak after months of training in the Sierra Nevada – and closer to home on Mount Montgo.

The expedition is called “From Montgo to Kilimanjaro” because two or three times a week the climbers have been scaling the mountain peak between Javea and Denia from all directions to practice techniques.

A number of targets were considered by the group for the challenge – including mountains in Peru and the Himalayas before the volcanic Kilimanjaro was selected.

One of the group, Rafa Serra said everyone taking part was keen for a challenge outside Spain’s borders and everyone was both enthusiastic and motivated in the final days before departure.

TORRY PLAYED their first preseason friendly last Sunday against Elche Ilicitano who were promoted to Segunda B at the end of last season. The game was pretty even with neither side carving out too many chances. Elche won the game in injury time. As is the case with friendlies there was a lot of chopping and changing of personnel. Torry have lost a lot of players from last season and are busy building a new squad for the new season on a much reduced budget. They have 2 friendlies in the next week at the Nelson Mandela both with 7 pm kick-offs. Tomorrow, Saturday against La Union and next Wednesday against UCAM Murcia. Try to be there.

THIS WEEK was the penultimate match of not only the 2012/2013 season but also the Summer Championship, the venue being the Embalse de Argos. The day was hot and everyone was expecting a good day with the fish feeding freely. How wrong were we!

For whatever reason the warmer it gets here the harder it gets - maybe it is too hot and the fish just don’t feed that well - who knows! Anyway, we all got sunburnt for our troubles, so everyone got something on the day. Even our resident expert Doug only managed just over 30 kilos.

The pegs are all quite good at present but work is needed to be done on a regular basis as the bamboo pop their heads up without much warning.
