San Javier Airport passenger numbers rise

WHILE THE future of Corvera airport is still undecided, passenger figures continue to grow in the region with Murcia-San Javier showing a rise of 16.2% in January 2014, reaching 25,657 passengers, according to figures released Friday by the airport manager. by Keith Nicol A total of 11 million passengers passed through airports of the Aena network in January 2014, a 2.5 percent increase over the same month of 2013, continuing an upward trend for the third consecutive month. The positive trend that began in November 2013 was reflected mainly in the growth achieved through international traffic. The busiest winter destinations were the Canary Island airports, which together grew by 9.3 percent, with more than 2.9 million passengers in the month of January.

The Madrid-Barajas airport topped the list for passengers in January 2014, with about 2.8 million passengers. Of these, more than two million were international passengers; an increase of 0.9 percent. Madrid was followed by Barcelona-El Prat, which grew 5.2 percent in passenger numbers, adding up to 2.1 million travellers, consolidating the growth path initiated in previous months. Passengers from Malaga Airport-Costa del Sol rose 9.5 percent last month with 588,854 travellers plus Alicante-Elche grew by 7.4 percent with 463,550 passengers. Continued on page 8
