San Javier Airport passenger numbers rise

WHILE THE future of Corvera airport is still undecided, passenger figures continue to grow in the region with Murcia-San Javier showing a rise of 16.2% in January 2014, reaching 25,657 passengers, according to figures released Friday by the airport manager.

by Keith Nicol A total of 11 million passengers passed through airports of the Aena network in January 2014, a 2.5 percent increase over the same month of 2013, continuing an upward trend for the third consecutive month. The positive trend that began in November 2013 was reflected mainly in the growth achieved through international traffic.

The busiest winter destinations were the Canary Island airports, which together grew by 9.3 percent, with more than 2.9 million passengers in the month of January.

The Madrid-Barajas airport topped the list for passengers in January 2014, with about 2.8 million passengers. Of these, more than two million were international passengers; an increase of 0.9 percent. Madrid was followed by Barcelona-El Prat, which grew 5.2 percent in passenger numbers, adding up to 2.1 million travellers, consolidating the growth path initiated in previous months.

Passengers from Malaga Airport-Costa del Sol rose 9.5 percent last month with 588,854 travellers plus Alicante-Elche grew by 7.4 percent with 463,550 passengers.

Bike lanes ready for Easter

Work is progressing quickly on Calle Bazán to link the Sports City with Torrevieja’s City Centre

by Keith Nicol CYCLING AROUND Torrevieja will become a little safer and more comfortable by Easter, as the first of the city’s new bicycling paths nears completion. Work is steadily progressing on Calle Bazán, from the intersection at the Plaza del Molino, where the windmill is located, towards Torrevieja’s seafront. The new path will link the exisiting but rarely used route from the Casagrande Industrial zone, starting bside the Vicente Garcia Stadium and where the market is expected to be relocated, directly to the centre of the city.

Along with the bile paths, new sidewalks are being installed and work is continuing at a frenzied pace, with more than one crew working on the project, to have the scheme finished before Easter. The new cobbled sidewalks and crossings, that now leave more open spaces and better sight lines at intersections, have been very well received by neighbours, who have had to have patience and endure the inconvenience of the construction, with the knowledge that soon Calle Bazán

will be a modern street with services.

As previously reported by the Department of Works and Services, the cost of these improvements is borne by the Generalitat Valenciana and are included in the PIP Plan, as an upgrade to the main work of the ‘Enclosure for 10 Markets in the enclave.’ This project will connect the harbour with the existing bike lane from Avenida Delfina Viudes, reaching the Sports City of Torrevieja.

The amount of this work amounts to a total of 100,000 euros. The entire length of this new section is almost 1,500 meters. After consulting with the local community, the new pathway will eliminate only 9 of 60 parking spaces. This is the first of a planned 85 km of cycle paths around the city with plans for a new cycle path along the N-332, various paths around the urban sectors, the implementation of a bicycle lane on both sides of Cortes Valenciano and news walkways to create better and safer pedestrian access to the hospital. The project also plans a closed and safe path to and around the lagoons of Torrevieja and La Mata, with footpaths and bike paths of over 23km in this area alone.

Costco sees Spain as an opportunity COSTCO, THE giant global membership warehouse wholesaler, announced recently that two outlets in Spain will be amongst its 36 new superstores opening in the spring of next year. Established in 1983, Costco is the second largest retailer in the US and the seventh in the world, concentrating on selling a wide range of products in high volume but at low, low prices, giving it an edge over its market rivals. Costco management sees Spain as an opportunity to invest in a low economy in the early stages of recovery. Costco Wholesale Spain SL was set up last year, with Seville tipped to be its first Spanish store location on a €12 million investment.

Redevelopment and scaremongering at Av. Alfredo Nobel

by Keith Nicol REDEVELOPMENT WORK on Avda Alfredo Nobel, just north of Playa los Locos is almost complete. The works have involved an investment of 290,000 euros, with improvements taking place from the end of Los Locos at 222, to the service station, which is adjacent to Villa-Sol Urbanisation Councillor Javier Montoro, reported that: “the redevelopment of the Avenida Alfredo Nobel, is nearing completion, after several months of implementation.” Specifically, Montoro explained that the work has included the renovation of the drinking water system to ensure the supply of water in this large residential area of Torrevieja. New pipes have been installed of a ductile iron material with a diameter of 200mm, replacing the existing cement material of 125mm, renewing over 1,200 meters in the process.

Besides the renovation of the drinking water system, the zone has been completely redeveloped including upgrades to the existing sidewalks, adding almost 1,500 square metres of new pavement around the area. This includes a totally linear footpath to improve the welfare of the residents and the many pedestrians who walk along this part to the torrevejenses coves.

Javier Montoro expressed his satisfaction with the good work of Agam in the execution of the works that have improved the image and appearance of the Avenida Alfredo Nobel.

Meanwhile the same area has been the subject of some controversy due to an article in the Spanish left wing press.

Informacion took the time and effort to report on a proposed scheme by a local architect to apparently attract Russian investment to the area, with the plans on display in a Russian Estate Agent.

However, this ‘non-story’ is about a scheme that has never been submitted to the Town Hall and they knew nothing of the proposed development. The plan outlined designs for building a recreation area, swimming pools, tennis courts, a commercial area and car parking directly opposite where the improvements on Avda Alfredo Nobel have been taking place, and have caused concern among some locals, a few of whom likened the story to “pure fiction and scaremongering.”

With the European Elections coming up in May, the ruling Partido Popular were quick to point out that this land is a protected area that development is not allowed on, even though about 25% of the area has already been built on; although the legality of these constructions is still in debate. Resident John Barnes pointed out that; “Nobody knew anything about the proposed project until RTN brought it to our attention this week. It seems to be a way to try and discredit the Town Hall with a plan that if it existed and was passed, would have had local home owners up in arms and voting for the opposition.”

11,000 self employed positions lost in five years OVER THE last five years, the Murica region has witnessed record job losses among the self-employed of over 11,000 people.

by Keith Nicol In a press release looking at this period between the fourth quarter of 2008 and the same quarter of 2013,The Union of Independent Workers Association (UATAE) highlighted the fact that 11,100 self-employed positions have been lost.

“The drop in Murcia is similar to the average fall throughout Spain and involves the disappearance of one of four autonomous positions since late 2008,” the association added. “This latest EPA data is of particular concern as it limits potential medium-term job creation, as autonomous workers also hire employees,” they added.

According to the EPA, in the fourth quar-

ter of 2013, there were 32,700 self employed people in the Murcia region while five years earlier, in the same quarter of 2008, the self-employed workforce accounted for 43,800, a drop of 25.3%.

The Autonomous Communities showing the greatest intensity drop, all with negative rates above 30% in the last five years are: Extremadura, 8,900 (-33.6%), Catalonia, 71,200 (-33, 3%), Cantabria, 5,700 (-32.8%), Galicia, 26,800 (-31.1%), Madrid, 40,300 (-30.3%) and Navarra, 4,700 (-30.1 %).

As a community, the only region that showed an increase in its number of autonomous employers in this difficult period, was the Canary Islands, with a thousand more employers; a rise of 2.9%.

Princess to escape jail sentence

by Jan Gamm THE INFANTA Cristina took the stand on Saturday to face a six-hour examination in connection with charges that she was complicit in the corruption case against her husband, Olympic handball medalist and Duke of Palma, Iñaki Urdangarin.

The result was a recommendation that the 48-year-old princess pay 600,000€ in fines and costs for offences linked with her ownership of the real estate company ‘Aizoon’. She will not serve a prison sentence.

The prosecutor has recommended a 17year prison stretch for her husband and 15 years for his former business partner Diego Torres. A number of other individuals face lengthy sentences, such as the former PP regional premier of the Balearic Islands, Jaume Matas. José Luis Ballester revealed the nature of the relationship between Urdangarin and Matas, as well as his own part in the scheme in exchange for a favourable plea bargain, but it is expected that Ballester will still receive a sentence of more than two years, which would carry a spell behind bars.

Judge Jose Castro had strictly prohibited cameras and telephones from his courtroom prior to the hearing.

CONSEQUENCES Chief Judge Francisco Martinez Espinosa condemned the publication of the video, telling reporters: “This is being investigated and if the person responsible is found they should pay the legal consequences.”

The Infanta Cristina answered specific questions over allegations that she was complicit in tax-dodging and money laundering, all of which she denied, telling the judge that she had

“no knowledge” of her husband’s business affairs. When she was asked how many foundations and non-profit associations she belonged to before she married Urdangarin, she replied: “I don’t remember...”

And when asked whether she was aware that she was the legal owner for money deposited in a company that she jointly owned with her husband, she responded: “I am unaware of the mechanics.”

It is the first time that a direct member of the Spanish royal family has been summoned to appear in a criminal court and the case is likely to have a long reaching and damaging effect on the reputation of the monarchy in Spain.

Spain offends China with arrest warrant A SPANISH High Court judge, Ismael Moreno, has angered China by issuing an international arrest order to Interpol on Monday to bring to justice the former Chinese President Jiang Zemin, ex-Prime Minister Li Peng and others over allegations of genocide in Tibet. The case was brought by human rights groups under Spain’s recognition of crossborder jurisdiction, in a similar way that Judge Baltazar Garzon achieved the arrest of Chilean ex-dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1998. Representatives of China’s Foreign Ministry have stated that Spain is “mistaken” in this matter which they hope will be “handled appropriately.” China has moved to prevent further lawsuits that seek to probe its alleged rights abuses in the “restive region of Tibet,” saying the Himalayan region was mired in poverty, exploitation and economic stagnation and was “peacefully liberated.”

Telefónica fined 500,000 Euros for two ‘serious infringements’ THE NATIONAL Commission on Financial Markets and Competition (CNMC) has imposed two fines of 250,000€ on Telefónica for serious infractions. The first fine was the penalty for not having reported its Family Movistar Movistar ADSL and ADSL TV offer in a ‘timely manner’. The regulator imposed the second fine for Telefónica Móviles preventing access to eleven numbers ‘Premium SMS rate’ messaging. Failure to comply with precautionary measures taken by the CNMC is considered a serious offence.

A new old submarine for Cartagena

by Keith Nicol BUILDING ON the success of Torrevieja’s Delfin S61 submarine, a new proposal has been put forward to add one of the sister ships, the ‘Tonina’ S52, as a Tourist attraction in Cartagena.

The municipal group Green United Left (IU-V) in the city of Cartagena has proposed that the ancient submarine S-62 ‘Tonina’ could be utilized as a floating or static museum as a visitor attraction somewhere in the port. The first and only decommissioned submarine that is accessible for visitors is her older sister, which since it opened as a floating museum in 2004, has attracted more than 1.3 million visitors.

The coalition led by Cayetano Jaime Moltó has asked the City Council to accept the transfer of the submarine from the Spanish Navy and to utilise its tourism potential, making it more of a reference link throughout history, as this was one of four submarines built in Cartagena.

In this aspect, the airport operator notes that the main Canarian airports, together, achieved a growth of 11.6 percent, accounting for 27,523 operations through Corunna, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, Fuerteventura and Córdoba.

Regarding freight traffic, last month all of Aena’s Spanish airport network handled 51,803 tons of cargo, 6.8 percent more than in January 2013. The largest growth in cargo traffic grew in January was seen at: Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Zaragoza and Vitoria.

Something in Commons for expats

by Jack Troughton EXPATS LIVING in Spain could have their own MPs in the House of Commons under new plans to create overseas constituencies for Brits living abroad around the globe.

The move is part of a Liberal Democrat overhaul of the political system and included in proposals for next month’s party conference. It would become part of the manifesto for the next General Election if voted through.

And the initiative has been welcomed by the action group Votes For Expat Brits. One of its prime goals is the creation of constituencies abroad to insure all citizens are represented in Parliament - as well as its central aim; a universal franchise giving all expats a vote for all time.

The Lib Dem plan would involve the creation of seats for Britons living in Europe, North America and Africa and would give a voice to the 800,000 expats living in Spain.

Several of the UK’s European partners already give representation to their nationals living beyond their borders.

France adopted the model in 2010 and has two seats for North and South America, six covering Europe, two for Africa and the Arabian peninsula, and one for most of Asia and Oceania.

A Lib Dem spokesman explained: “British citizens can already vote when they move abroad for 15 years, but their votes are counted in the constituency where they used to reside. “This would create separate constituencies in Parliament for the representatives of these voters.”

DELIGHT Voting campaigner Margaret Hales MBE, who lives in Benitachell, said: “I am delighted that the Party organisation of the Liberal democrats has accepted the cries of the members

of their party who live abroad – indeed, I congratulate them on realising that the issue of democracy is still important in today’s world.

“I wish them luck in getting this proposal into the Party Manifesto and even more luck in the chance to seal it in legislation in the next Parliament.”

Margaret, a descendent of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, wrote to Lib Dem leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg last year to ask why she lost her vote after 15 years of moving abroad while Mr Clegg’s Spanish wife Miriam still votes in her country’s elections.

“I am, however, still waiting for an answer from Mr Clegg; I wrote to him asking why I – living in Spain – have my vote taken away by the British Coalition government but his wife – living in England – gets the vote in the Spanish General Elections. I would like a reply!”

The Cabinet Office has repeatedly said there are no plans to extend the franchise to expats beyond the current 15 year cut off. But recent debates in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords – most recently in the discussions over the failed Private Members Bill calling for a referendum

on EU membership - have shown the whole question of expat voting and representation is making its mark.

The European Commission has also urged Britain to change its rules, underlining the denial of a voice was treating expats like second class citizens.

Blood reserves drop THE CENTRAL Transfusion Centre is drawing on its reserves to accommodate the needs of hospitals and clinics, prompting concerns that there will not be adequate supplies should a disaster strike. However, the UGT union claims that the ‘shortfall’ is simply the result of incompetence and poor resources management. The Department of Health points out that there has been a drop in the level of consumption required by hospitals since 2009. Murder suspect on ‘most wanted’ list BRITISH FUGITIVE Kevin Thomas Parle wanted over two Merseyside killings is believed to be hiding out in Alicante, police said this week.

by Jack Troughton THE 33-year-old is named on a police list of Spain’s 10 most wanted criminals – being hunted for crimes such as murder, drug trafficking and violent robbery.

Parle is on the run from Merseyside Police and is wanted for the murders of Walton mum Lucy Hargreaves, 22, in 2005 and Toxteth teenager, 16-year-old Liam Kelly in 2004.

He vanished in 2005 and despite a number of appeals by British and Spanish police remains at large and is thought by detectives to be one of three of the country’s most wanted hiding in the holidayhotspot of Alicante Province.

Parle is described as 6ft 6in tall with a 1cm scar on the left side of his head and has blue eyes, and goes by the nickname ‘Hemp’.

In a public appeal similar to the more familiar British Crimestoppers campaigns, a Spanish police spokesman said: “Parle was

born in the UK and is wanted by his country for homicide.”

According to the Liverpool Echo, Parle was one of three men who burst into Lucy Hargreaves’ home as she hid under a duvet and fired a shotgun before torching the house. It was believed she was not the target and the gang’s intended victim was her boyfriend.

And Liam Kelly was gunned down in a Toxteth street in June 2004. He met Anthony Campbell with who he was arguing over a £200 debt.

During Campbell’s 2007 trial, the jury heard he turned up with Parle – and it was believed the fugitive fired the fatal shot.

Campbell was jailed for life but the alleged gunman was never caught.

Overdose deaths increase by 44% DEATHS CAUSED by drug overdose have increased by 44% since 2010 according to the Spanish Society of Addiction. Even more worrying is the typical profile of a person likely to die from a drug overdose.

Serial ‘junkies’ imagined to be shooting up in an alleyway are no longer the likely victims of overdose. Seemingly normal people with apparently normal lives and steady jobs are dying from overdoses of cocaine; amphetamine derivatives; hallucinogens; sedatives and cocktails of substances. And the economic crisis is thought to be behind the rise in the number of deaths as addicts choose a cheaper, affordable fix.

Such a pest!

PERHAPS ONE of your readers could recommend a decent pest control company in Javea. I have tried unsuccessfully to get help disposing of a persistent rat in the last few days and in the end had to call a Torrevieja company for advice.

The problem is that in the process of trying to chase ‘Basil’ as we call him out of the naya, he scuttled into the grand piano for sanctuary! Big problem – cannot use sprays and cannot try smoking him out for fear of melting or setting fire to said piano.

So we tried my cooking hooked up to a rat trap – after all it has disposed of unwanted guests in the past…

Unfortunately Basil thought the trap was a huge joke and simply played tennis with it before emptying the food onto the piano frame and scampering off to sleep off his huge meal! So we shut down the piano lid – ‘right you little *** we thought, ‘…you can starve in there…’

Last night was the last straw. My husband had locked up and switched off all the lights and was just heading through the dark naya with a hot cup of coffee when the piano started playing all by itself, scaring him witless.

Basil was performing a creditable rendition of Chopin’s Fantasy Impromptu in C Sharp.

Just when we were getting desperate, Basil decided this morning to vacate the piano for alternative accommodation but not before he had eaten most of the felt key protector! He sauntered off looking somewhat bloated and was last seen heading for Benitachell via next door’s summer kitchen!

Only interested in themselves

THE CONDITION of Orihuela Costa has sadly declined over the years. It is quite alarming to see so much graffiti, rubbish and broken glass along bicycle paths and sidewalks.

Aside from the disturbing amount of broken beer bottles and assorted rubbish, I have wondered why small airplanes are allowed to practise right over this urban area.

A friend wrote to the Councillor for the Coast, pleading for someone at Town Hall to call the airport and tell small air plane owners to stop practising over urban areas. The response was that he could not hear the noise where he lived so he could not care less about other people. Those in charge seem only interested in themselves, and only thinking they are entitled to be served rather than serving. They are not public servants but rather think the public serves them. Goodness me, there is an entire Mediterranean Sea to practise over and not bother anyone.

We have heard small planes practising each weekday morning for the past two years. Why are small air planes allowed to have the nerve to get on our nerves? The noise is extremely irritating.

I really wonder why the people in charge of Orihuela Costa Town Hall allow such disregard for residents who pay their salaries through taxes.

Swine flu

I READ in a recent issue of RTN that there had been an outbreak of swine flu on the Costa.

Some local politicians, mayors, ex-mayors and bankers must be quaking in their troughs!

Lazy and provocative I READ the letter from Jim Wilson on the subject of WFA and I too shake my head. To base one’s argument on fancy phrases (whinging ex-pats) and some very dodgy, simplified figures is very lazy and provocative.

Just as ‘one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter’, so it is that ‘someone’s whinging ex-pat is someone else’s pensioner arguing for what is theirs’, paid for and legally qualified for.

I sincerely hope that Mr Wilson is paying all his taxes in both locations where he has his two houses. Maybe the Tory government could be persuaded to tax those high

earners adequately and stop them having to steal from pensioners to make good the deficit caused by those high earners (bankers and financiers) in the first place.

For my own position, I have never accepted that temperature is a good way to determine who receives the allowance and who doesn’t. I am quite happy to accept it and pass it on to some deserving cause of MY choosing and not subsidise double-home owners and their like. By the way, does Mr Wilson call those Scots seeking freedom from the UK as ‘whinging Jocks?’

Alicante province sees property prices fall

Property prices still dropping in Alicante Province leading to a buyers market

by Keith Nicol THROUGHOUT SPAIN, the average value of existing homes rose 0.1% in January 2014 from the previous month, but fell by 8.3% year on year comparison over 2013. In January, property values rose to 1,654 euros per square meter, according to a report in hogaria.net, with the web site emphasizing that this monthly price rise could indicate a ‘change in trend’.

However, this is little comfort for property owners looking to sell in Alicante province, where the average price of existing homes showed a drop of 3.8%, in January, placing Alicante in the unenviable position of the province with the lowest property prices over last year. Elsewhere, Castellón is among the provinces showing the biggest rise at 0.6%, while in Valencia the price of second-hand housing rose by 0.5%. The five Spanish provinces that recorded a fall in the price of second-hand housing during the month of January were: Lugo (-0.7%) Gipuzkoa (-0.6%) Navarra and Las Palmas (-0.5 %)

Zamora (-0.4%) By contrast, most provinces recorded rises in value including Guadalajara (+1%) Córdoba (+0.7%) Cantabria Castellon Ciudad Real (+0.6%) Locally, it’s certainly a buyers market with the provincial capitals showing the biggest drop in property prices in January led by Alicante (-3.8%) Albacete (-2.9%), Toledo (-2.7%) Valladolid (-2.2%) while the most showing an increase where in: Lleida (+2.8%), Granada (+1.6%) Ciudad Real (+1.2%).

In January, the major Spanish housing markets of Madrid and Barcelona, saw equity rises of 0.2% and 0.4% recorded respectively, reaching a per square metre price of housing of 2,770 and and 3,104€. In Sevilla and Valencia the price of second-hand housing rose 0.1% and 0.5% respectively, to 2,052 and 1,780€ per square metre.

OPTIMIZA project coordinates resources for foreigners

By Keith Nicol TODAY, FRIDAY, 30 representatives from 14 local municipalities will hold a networking and information session in Torrevieja’s Music Palace, as part of the OPTIMIZA project. Overseen by the Foreign Citizens Council of Alicante, whose main objective is to coordinate with municipalities and use existing resources and services effectively, this new initiative serves as a meeting point for ideas and to put forward plans of action, to the Provincial Council of Alicante. In terms of networking, it’s also an opportunity to establish links between councils and to ensure that efforts are not duplicated or to establish plans for joint efforts if required.

About 30 technicians from 14 municipalities in the region of Vega Baja are expected to attend from Algorfa, Rojales, Callosa, Daya Nueva, Guardamar del Segura, Los Montesinos, Orihuela, Pilar de la Horadada, Rafal, Rojales, San Fulgencio, San Miguel de Salinas, Torrevieja and the Vega Baja commonwealth.

The meeting will discuss what future action plans are in the pipeline of the Provincial Government for 2014, such as the pooling of resources and knowledge to meet the needs of the attending municipalities. The OPTIMZA project is in its third year, and is driven by the Department of Equality, Youth and Foreign Citizens, with the goal of improving the interaction and participation between local municipalities.

Abortion bill survives Passport opposition challenge renewals go online BRITISH EXPATS living in Spain must now go online to make passport applications as part of a worldwide changeover.

by Jack Troughton The new process utilises the UK Government’s website – www.gov.uk/overseas-passports - and is said to help reduce errors that can delay the issue of vital travel documents.

And the system, which includes online payment, generates a personalised pack that must be printed, signed and sent with photographs and any additional documentation required to the Passport Office in the UK and no longer to a British Consulate or Embassy.

Once an application has been submitted, people will receive instructions on how to track its progress via the same website.

However, it is important to make an application in good time as a new passport will take at least four weeks from the time the completed application pack is received by the Passport Office.

This increases to six weeks when re-

placing a lost or stolen travel document.

“Please don’t leave it until the last minute,” advised Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain. “You can apply nine months in advance and any unexpired time will be added to your new passport.”

Protestors to the abortion bill reforms

SPAIN’S CONTROVERSIAL bill that effectively ends women’s rights to abortion is to be passed following the defeat of a parliamentary opposition challenge from the Socialists that failed by 183 votes to 151 despite a number of passionate protest demonstrations by women’s proabortion groups. Critics of the newly reformed law that allows abortion only in the event of rape or serious threat to the mother’s physical or mental health say that the new amendments will certainly force women to seek illegal and dangerous interventions. Joan Saura of the Catalan Green party ICV described the bill as: “…a law for women’s suffering, not for their rights.” Socialist Party deputy leader Elena Valenciano said: “Spanish women will once again be divided into two groups: those who can travel to a neighbouring country and undergo a safe abortion and those who cannot.” Opinion polls suggest that 80% of the country does not welcome the reform to the abortion bill.

Rail travel the new trend

IN 2013 the airline industry suffered its worst year since the crisis, with passenger transport dropping by 14% at less than 29.7 million. Long distance bus services also suffered, falling 7.2% to 1.34 million travellers, yet rail passengers increased by 13.5% in 2013, three million more than the previous year. The expansion of the AVE network combined with lower rail fares is assessed to be the reason behind travel services now favouring the train.

Moving forward with Reach Out

by Keith Nicol KAROLINA LEONARD continues to push things forward at Reach Out Torrevieja as the homeless charity grows in strength for 2014. Unfortunately, due to insurmountable problems with building regulations and being unable to install a disabled ramp for access into their planned furniture store, they have had to have a rethink and reorganise their main charity shop. This will now house all of their donations, white and brown goods, clothes, knickknacks, books and many other wonderful treasures, as the backbone of their fundraising source for their charitable efforts. What was to become their furniture outlet will become their store room and sorting zone, plus a small workshop in the near future.

The charity provides 30 to 40 breakfasts and 60 to 70 lunches each day to Torrevieja’s homeless, from their drop in centre at Calle Bella Antonia,1, close to the Friday Market and Plaza Havana in Torreviejas. Their new charity shop located on calle Doña Sinforosa, 8 in Acequión continues to grow in popularity and Karolina hopes to be able to attract more volunteers to allow them to extend opening hours in both stores.

Karolina is originally from Bavaria and spent 18 years living in the Black Country in Dudley, which provided her with her fluency in the English Language. Feeling under the weather in 2003 she visited her brother’s apartment in Torrevieja and within a week felt so much better that they sold their house in England and came to Spain where Karo-

lina offered her services as a chiropodist.

She joined Torrevieja Christian Fellowship Church in 2004 and in 2010 had a ‘calling’ to do something for the homeless and with the backing of TCF, she and a few volunteers, found a garage premises, started to collect donations, and Reach Out was born.

They now have 50 volunteers, and after seven applications they were finally provided with a CIF number from Valencia in December 2012, which has allowed them to work closely with social services in Torrevieja to provide this valuable service.

Their drop-in centre provides, the homeless with free coffee, breakfast, lunch, bedding materials, clothes, washing machines, a shower, nurse visits, hair dresser plus food and sanitary products for the homeless, plus a religious service on Sundays. The main shop is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10.00am until 2pm.

Three Belgian elite athletes train in the Sports City

By Keith Nicol THE LATEST in an ever growing line of elite athletes are training in Torrevieja this week. Three athletes from Belgian are enjoying the milder, if windy, conditions at the Sports City. Seutin Bernard, Michael Somers and Willem Euskens are three elite athletes belonging to Belgian Club Ac Lyra, who are working with their coaches to prepare for the new season. One is middle-distance runner and the other two are decathletes who are both working on their strength training for the shot put and javelin by working with their coaches to develop power in the municipal gym. After passing through Torrevieja, they will move to Tenerife to continue their preparation and subsequently participate in the World Athletic Championships later in the year.

Daniel Cánovas crosses Atlantic TORREVIEJA’S LONG seagoing history was further enhanced this week after Real Club Nautico yachtsman Daniel Cánovas successfully sailed his way across the Atlantic in just 23 days.

Daniel said: “The journey was full of fantastic experiences; from the lack of wind, sometimes having to use the engine to keep moving, to having to survive on just a diet of fish As Daniel told us that perhaps the most beautiful experience was the frequent visits of dolphins, that; “looked just like Flipper, that often joined us at the bow of the yacht, Daniel in a jovial accompanying us on the long journey for a long time. They left Martinique heading tomood wards Granada on Monday, with all of the crew looking forward to spending a few days crossing relaxing in the Caribbean before returning to Europe on February 17th, although this time the by air to Alicante with a stopover in Paris.

Excellent reception to the Cazuelica and Wine

By Keith Nicol A NEW gastronomic event was launched in Torrevieja last weekend, called ‘The Cazuelica and Wine’. The event was the first in a new gastronomic calendar promoting the traditional cuisine of Torrevieja along with the most varied dishes of other communities and even foreign cuisine. The event, running along similar lines to the successful Tapa Route, featured twenty local Bars and Restaurants who all offered a special wine to accompany a casserole dish, over a long weekend.

Councillor for Tourism and Hospitality, Luis María Pizana visited many of the establishments during the four days of this gastronomic event, stating that he was; “pleasantly surprised by the welcome and the quality of the dishes presented.” The restaurants that participated in this promotion, the ‘Cazuelica y el Vino’ included: Mesón la Huertica, El Piscolabis, Cocedero Marisquería Aguamarina, Marisquería Torrevieja 2, Mesón Real, Restaurante El Puerto, Restaurante El Novillo, Restaurante Bahía, Restaurante Pizzería Catalina II, Mesón Las Jarras, Restaurante Barlovento, Restaurante Nautilus, Restaurante Rincón De Capi’s, Restaurante La Mata “Felisa”, La Bodeguilla del Mullins, Restaurante Los Tilos, El Asador de la Ermita, Mesón de la Costa, Copas & Tapas, Tasca Bahía, Tasca Nueva Bahía, Lizarran Torrevieja, El Rincón de las Jarras, Restaurante los Zamoranos y Restaurante Asador As’Brasas.

Torrevieja ‘s Mediteraneo Institute offers the region’s first virtual walk through

by Keith Nicol WE HAVE all probably heard of and used the Google Earth and Mapping program.

It is perfect for navigating streets but now through the Google Business Photos system, it is possible to virtually visit other facilities, such as shops, commercial centres, sports stadiums and places of interst. This week the regions first educational facility, at the IES Mediterranean in Aguas Neuvas, was added to the system. Thus, the centre becomes the first institute of intermediate education in the region and one of the first in Spain to incorporate this technology.

IES Mediterranean is also the only

one in the southern province of Alicante that offers courses in preparation for a Bachelor of Arts. The modern building has an infrastructure appropriate to creative needs, including five studio classrooms for teaching Drawing Art, Drafting, Sculpture and Visual Education. The centre has three workshops for Technology, two Music classrooms, three laboratories and three computer rooms, to which we must add more than thirty conventional classrooms.

Now, with this technological improvement, the most unique corners of the institute can be visited virtually through the web-page iesmediterraneo.info or directly from Google search engines. The

extraordinary work has been done by local Toerevieja photographer Antonio Garcia, who has produced the spectacular 360 º tour of the facilities of the IES Mediterranean. In this way, parents and former and future students and anyone interested, can walk the halls of the centre, walk through the courtyards, visit sports facilities, see each classroom and get a feel for the facility.

The new website of the institute, has become a benchmark for the entire educational community, which has probably influenced the surprising number of visits to their web site, which in just over a year has passed 135,000 mark, a truly unusual number for such an establishment.

Councillor for Trade and Commerce, Agustina Esteve, said that on 14th February, a heart will travel the main streets of the city and distribute surprise gifts to shoppers in return if they can show proof of purchase from a member of APYMECO. You can also be part of a fun picture with this curious ‘heart’, to be published on the Facebook page of the Department of Trade, plus www.shoppingtorrevieja.com.

This afternoon, you may also be serenaded by the Tuna Ladies from the Law School of the University of Alicante, who will be distributing carnations and singing different songs. Choo, choo, choo, watch out there on thetrainline!

DID YOU know that scientists have discovered the earliest evidence of human footprints outside of Africa, down there on the Norfolk Coast? Well, they have: the footprints are more than 800,000 years old and were found on the shores of Happisburgh. The BBC reported that: “They are direct evidence of the earliest known humans in northern Europe.”

The footprints were exposed when recent rough seas eroded a sandy beach to reveal a series of elongated hollows.

Scientists managed to grab video evidence of the footprints but plaster casts couldn’t be made because along came another rough sea and they were washed away - forever. Amazing, isn’t it – these fragile echoes of the past preserved for all this time and then whoosh… wiped away as though they’d never been. It all goes to show how insignificant we all are in the grand universal scheme of things, doesn’t it? “Oh Wattsie,” I hear, “that’s a bit philosophical innit?”

It is I suppose; but not quite as philosophical as I was in the week when I discovered that for the last five months some robbing sod had been nicking ten quid a month from my visa card. I quid, sorry, kid you not. And my old chum Dene Michael of Black Lace is partially to blame.

I was watching Dene performing on those Choo, Choo, Choo adverts last year and became so hooked that I actu-

ally booked some tickets on thetrainline. com. It was quick, easy and cheap (or so I thought); and I went on my journey and came back again without giving any more thought. Until, last week that was...

You see, being environmentally aware I have paperless billing; I also have a standing order to pay my visa card a tenner a month (big spender eh?). Last month I took the trouble to go online and see how much more I owed on said card. “Gulp,” said I, “that said card hasn’t gone down much.” In fact said card hadn’t gone down at all – you see, for every payment I’d made it was negated by some company called completesave. co.uk taking another tenner back out.

A bee-line was made to the bank and investigations are now afoot. In the meantime I’ve discovered that completesave. co.uk is linked to thetrainline.com and after booking my tickets last September I stupidly hit a link for 15% savings on my next purchase. Well, let me tell you the questions they wanted to know were so long, and frankly a tad nosey, that I gave up and never completed the form. But, I was there in their system – I was netted!

away your hard earned dosh. Like Eileen Dooley for example, she said: “I have had £10 a month taken from my account by completesave.co.uk and none of these payments were authorized by me. They slipped past my attention because the amount was only £10.” Seemingly, that’s a common occurrence, Eileen.

Another ripoff-ee is J Cassidy who notes: “I have also had £10 taken out of my bank account every month unauthorised. It seems when you book with trainline you sign up for this scheme.” JC adds, “But I didn’t book any tickets on line at all! I only looked on their website.” JC is further peeved by the fact that before he could halt the

payments “completesave.com put the monthly charge UP by another £1.50.

I only discovered it this week when I checked my statement. Does trainline know this is happening?” Who knows JC, who knows? But did you know that trainline is not alone in the completesave.com press-gang swizz? Similar complaints have been raised by folks booking at: Travel Lodge, Pizza Hut and even Argos. So, dear RTN reader beware, tis a jungle out there.

Murcia property sales on the rise

by Keith Nicol THE SALE of homes in the Region of Murcia for 2013 amounted to 10,686 sales, representing an increase of 6.4% over 2012, according to provisional data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). However, eliminating the ‘SAREB effect’ or ‘Bad Bank’ sales by owner is significantly down.

Despite the rebound last year, the volume of home sales has plummeted during the crisis. At the height of the property boom, in 2008 when a total of 26,400 homes were sold; putting things into perspective, figures for 2013 show a fall of more than 60% over the last five years.

Faced with declining domestic markets, foreign investors, known locally in the trade as ‘vulture funds’ have enabled this growth, which is mainly located in coastal regions. The data also indicates throughout

Spain sales have only increased in six communities, especially in the Canaries, which showed an increase of 13.5%, with 6.4% Murcia and Catalonia with 4.8%.

In Murcia there were 935 home purchase transactions per 100,000 people, compared to the national average of 825. In the whole of Spain, home sales fell 2.2% in 2013 compared to 2012, showing a total of 311,414 transactions, signifying a three-year low, although the results have slowed down and are showing less of a steep decline since the beginning of the crisis.

A smelly solution to ID verification

SPANISH RESEARCHERS claim they have developed an ‘electronic bloodhound’ capable of identifying individuals by their smell. The Biometrics, Biosignals and Security (GB2S) research group of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), in collaboration with Ilía Sistemas SL, say the system is already more than 85% accurate. The research was inspired by the ability of bloodhounds to track an individual by scent alone. The scientists predict that the system could eventually replace fingerprinting and iris scanning identification, will be implemented by airport security to replace the highly fallible photo-ID arrangement used today and will also significantly reduce queue times.

by Keith Nicol TORREVIEJA IS home to one of Spain’s busiest 13-year olds: Nicola Kuhn. The immensely talented teenager is presently ranked number one in Spain and three in Europe at Under 14 level and is dedicated to becoming a tennis superstar of the future.

Last week he was in Istanbul, back in Torrevieja for a few days, to play even more tennis, before jetting back off to Italy on Tuesday to represent Germany in the Winter Cup, the equivalent of the Davis Cup for Under 12, 14, and 16 age groups.

In January he was runner up in Les Petits in France and champion of the Nike Junior International Teen Tennis at the Bolton Arena before heading off to Istanbul for the qualifying rounds of the Winter Cup. This week he is in Italy where he is representing Germany against favourites Russia, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Poland, Spain and Turkey.

Nicola was born in Innsbruck, Austria but has lived in Torrevieja since he was just three months old. His father Alfred is from Germany and mother Rita from Russia and the talented youngster had the difficult decision to make as to which country to represent on the

International stage. He finally choose Germany, in part because they provide him with financial backing for his training and intense travel schedule. Nicola also speaks Spanish, German and Russian plus he has a good command of English, perfect for a future life on the hectic tennis circuit.

Nicola started playing for fun with his mother at the age of four and soon joined Torrevieja’s Tennis Club, where he has helped put both the town and Valencia’s junior teams on the map, often playing and winning at under 16 too. Last weekend, he played in a local team tournament, winning both of his games, helping Torrevieja to the runner up spot against the mighty Valencia team.

Recently he took his tennis to the next level by going to the Academia de Tenis Equelite in Villena, Alicante, to work closely with former world number one, Juan Carlos Ferrero. Nicola’s style of play is more in the mode of Roger Federer than Rafael Nadal and as the teenager is pushing the six-foot mark already, he has both the physical and technical abilities to be a major name in the future. More about Nicola’s progress in a couple of weeks, if we can move fast enough to catch up with him.

Bay Radio charity ‘Oscars’ COSTA BLANCA charities will receive special awards in April for their tireless work in a glittering red carpet event at the Marriot Hotel La Sella, Denia.

by Jack Troughton The first Bay Radio Charity Gala Awards will honour 20 charities for their work helping adults, families, children, and animals in their hour of need.

Sponsored by Europa Network, 12th April is a black tie event with British Consul Paul Rodwell attending and Mark Stacey – the antiques dealer who has become a television celebrity with shows like ‘Flog It’ and ‘Bargain Hunt’ – picking up the gavel as auctioneer.

Javea-based Bay Radio has organised an evening of special events, surprises and guests to make it a night to remember for

the nominated charities, whose volunteers dedicate their time to helping others.

The radio station’s Graham Barber told RTN: “We are all very excited here at Bay radio about holding this event; we have been thinking about this for a while and wanted to do something really special to say ‘thank you’ to those people who work tirelessly for others.

DAZZLE “Twenty various charities, five members from each, will be our guests for the evening – a fun-filled, dazzling event – that says we acknowledge what you do, and are so grateful for what you do, and please carry on doing what you do best.”

Freemason’s climb raises 5000 Euros for Spanish homeless

A FREEMASON’S quest to summit the highest mountain in the Americas has raised more than 5,000€ for the Spanish homeless. Thomas Ronning, a local Freemason, recently scaled and reached the summit of Mt Aconcagua (White Sentinel) in Argentina, scaling the ‘Polish Traverse’ which took 20 days. In doing so he raised more than 5,000€ for the Festival 2014 Valencian Provincial Freemasonry Charity, in aid of purchasing ambulances and a soon-to-be-presented ‘Mobile day Centre for the Homeless’ for the Cruz Roja in Alicante. The Mobile Day Centre is the first of its kind in Spain and will attend to the poor and destitute on a routine basis at dedicated points within the community.

Providing paperwork: what you need for the 720 asset declaration form YOU’VE GOT your ticket; you’ve waited in the queue; you get to the ‘funcionario’ and guess what? You haven’t got the right paper work.

THERE ALWAYS seems to be something you’ve forgotten; not had copied; out of date or you didn’t realise you needed.

It’s become a bit of a preoccupation with the expat in Spain and a cause of anxiety too - what exactly do I need to take with me when applying for an official document?

We’ve noticed the same problem with people declaring their 720 too. The 720 asset declaration form is the one you must complete if you are a resident in Spain and have assets abroad. We might not be funcionarios and we are on your side, but we do notice that clients still seem to go into a cold sweat and document overkill when they arrive at our offices to complete it.

So, we thought it might be a good idea to provide a list of the documents needed to complete the 720 before March 31st. It’s also a little reminder of the three different asset groups you are required to declare against. Remember, you only need to complete a 720 this year if you haven’t done one before or your circumstances have changed.

Have you checked cadastral status of your property?

ARE YOU sure that you are not paying your neighbour’s local rates?

HELLO I am British and recently bought a property in Javea, on the Marina Alta. After some time we realised that we are paying a property tax (IBI - SUMA) for a house that is not ours. How is it possible that no one realised it before?

On many occasions we have reminded our clients about how important it is to make sure when we buy or sell a property in Spain that we have the right legal advice and that all necessary inquiries and checks are made, to buy or sell without risks.

We therefore recommend the services of an independent lawyer.

We must also remember that although sales could involve a bank, real estate agent or notary public before whom the purchase deed, or Escritura, will be signed, they do not do (as it is not their duty) perform all the necessary checks referring to the urban status of the property, existence of occupational license and

correspondence between cadastre and registry, etc.

As mentioned in other articles, it is essential to check the status of the property on the catastro, as it is an administrative record for tax purposes, used for example to determine the local taxes to pay (IBI or SUMA bill, equivalent to council tax) .

According to a recent change to the Law on Real Estate Cadastre, it is now required to record the cadastral reference of the properties in the deeds of sale. As this requirement is relatively new, there are many properties registered at the Land Registry that do not mention the cadastral reference.

Even worse, it sometimes happens that the cadastral reference assigned at the land registry to a property is actually incorrect and does not correspond to that property. It is also very common that a property has a different description (address, property, etc.) at the Land Registry than at catastro, or sometimes they have the same description but corresponding to

different properties.

Therefore it is essential to check that the address and details on cadastro matches the reality and the land registration - to do that we need to locate the property at the cadastral plans. It is also very convenient to get from the Town Hall the corresponding equivalency certificate, where it should be confirmed that the Land Registry and the cadastral description corresponds to the same property.

Only in this way can we be sure that the Land Registry registration and cadastral information relates to the same property and that both coincide with reality.

Spanish ‘make or break’ companies in 2013 THE YEAR 2013 finished with 93,363 new companies being registered and more than 24,700 closing in Spain.

The data released on Tuesday by the INE is seen as evidence of the long-awaited departure of the country’s financial crisis and the first stirrings of recovery.

However, despite more companies being created they are noted to be generating lower profits – proof that although businesses are showing signs of rising from the ashes of the credit crisis, financial pressures continue to trouble Spanish commerce.

Most of the 24,735 companies dissolved, representing the highest figure in recent years, were voluntary closures.

The European Succession Regulation will bring clarity to cross-border inheritances

THIS IS the main conclusion of the experts, Lawyers in International Law, Mr. Pedro Heredia Ortiz and Mr. Pellicer Ignacio Molla, of the law firm Pellicer & Heredia Abogados, on the EU cross-border succession framework.

ACCORDING TO Mr. Pedro Heredia Ortiz, a lawyer specialising in international law, president of the International Law Section of the Bar Association of Alicante, associate professor of the Master in International Commerce (Alicante University) and Private International Law Department of the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche, the regulatory text of the new European Regulation that will come into force in August 2015, “must be labelled with revolutionary merit.”

Still, it will also leave issues undefined, such as the margin left to the choice of the law of succession, for which firstly the role of Lawyers, and then that of the European court, will be essential. And there are gaps or a lack of definition in the various and different family relationships, at a time when gay marriages

are common, or issues such as children by surrogacy, as Mr. Pedro Heredia stressed.

Likewise it does not include the possible abuses that may be implied by the multiple choice of laws and succession rules the regulation allows.

Mr. Ignacio Pellicer Molla, a partner at the Pellicer & Heredia Abogados, a lawyer specialist on International Law, believes that this text will regulate the European successions, an issue with various legal and jurisdictional elements, in a “didactical” and above all “comprehensive” manner because it will determine, among other principles, jurisdiction, applicable law, mutual recognition, implementation and the probative nature of the decisions in the field of succession.

Both of them agree that “…the new regulation responds to the political objective of establishing a cooperation project” of the

European Community in the dispersed and varied succession regulation of the States of the Union. And it is a step forward in the area of freedom, security and justice, in line with the long-term mandates emanating from Tampere, The Hague and Stockholm.”

The significance of this regulation can be seen in various data: every year in the European Union 450,000 inheritances are initiated between citizens of different member countries, with a value in excess of €123 billion.

Furthermore, eight million Europeans live outside their countries of origin and there are two and a half million properties that belong to people residing in states different to where their assets are located.

Avinenca gardeners to the rescue OVER THE past five years, more and more expatriates are taking an interest in knowing more about the Valencia region’s history and its gardens, agriculture and environmental problems related to preserving rare species of flora and fauna. Actions are being taken to promote better land stewardship where agricultural land/practices are being abandoned and enthusiasts have taken part in the activities of the Friends of Avinenca.

ACTIVITIES Visits to see such things as the 8th Century annual Algemesi procession; the old architecture of the historic centre of Valencia; the rare plants within the protected military base on the peak of the Aitana mountain; the l’Albarda garden; various wild life reserves and animal, bird and turtle rehabilitation and breeding centres. An ecological orange farm; an orange packing station; a horchata producer

and an artisan olive mill.

There have been week-long away trips including a visit last year to visit innovative preservation projects in wild parts of the Pyrenees, such as a shepherd training centre and local craft centre dedicated to producing pure wool products, prevention of the erosion of precious landscapes etc…

People have assisted in the clearing of unwanted invasive plants from seaside sand dunes before replanting with more appropriate species; the clearing of woodlands damaged by fires etc..

Longer term projects such as the clearing of the lagoon at the south end of Moraira’s beaches to encourage the nesting of birds; wildlife surveys along the Benichembla River and the recovery of a nearby abandoned olive grove. Up to date information about Avinenca and its visits and projects can be found by searching for ‘Friend’s of Avinenca’ on the internet.

With respect to the olive project almost twenty volunteers, many keen gardeners, recently undertook the third year winter pruning and clean-up of the olive grove. In the coming months this will be followed by a pruning’s burning day, spraying days using ecological insecticides fungicides and foliage fertilizers and hopefully a productive harvesting day in November. For my sins I have been the coach for the various activities and giving advice re volunteers’ own olive trees.

If you have just taken over a new property with olive tres, the first year pruning may need up to a 90% cut back to stimulate new, healthy productive growth. Pruning in later years will only be about 10% - 20%, depending on the annual growth and shaping required.

Tales of Pitt and Clooney and Nipples!

THERE’S A dubious internet sharing site called ‘Reddit’, and like so many of these websites, it’s an opportunity for people with no life to apparently acquire one. Sadly it has taken off big-time, and even has peeps from the world of showbiz using it, and thus to the reason why it is here today. George Clooney (easy girls) is the famous peep I refer to, and when he got involved in what is called … Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), he had the goodness of heart to share with his legions of followers how ashamed he was about having nipples in the 1997 box office flop Batman & Robin. Yes folks this is not a joke! His rather graphic account unfolded like this “that’s not something you really think about when you’re putting on the Bat Suit, you figure they all have nipples and then you realise yours was the first ... Batman was just constantly cold I guess …” don’t you just feel for the poor chap. However, things then start to get a lot more interesting… Clooney went on to talk about 2004 comedy crime movie ‘Ocean’s Twelve,’ only this time rather than divulge some sad old crapolla about nipply-poos, he gave us the lowdown on a prank his co-star Brad Pitt (easy girls 2 ) played on him whilst filming in Lake Como, and it goes like this: “Pitt had a flier sent around saying I only want to be called by my character’s name Danny Ocean and that I was treating the crew like s*** and it got into the local paper.” Told you it was a lot more interesting didn’t I! …

Georgie boy then added, “When it got into the paper I came downstairs in the morning and Brad had the paper in his hand, and I said “You’re mine from here on out.” To which Brad said, “Please don’t harm my children!” … Now that’s what I call a story worth telling … Batman and Nipples? … You what!

Celebrity Clips WHEN WILL this massive caravan of interest in seeing people humiliated on TV ever stop? I’m sure if the people who enjoy these shows were to go to a psychiatrist they would be told to go see a psychiatrist. BBC 3 programme ‘Extreme Beauty Queens’ featured girls looking to become Miss Venezuela, but instead were told by a man of 70 they were fat and ugly! … ***hole!

Firstly I discover they have the Antiques Roadshow in America, then secondly that a passport that belonged to Marvin Gaye turned up in a show over there last week. A Motown fan had bought a stack of albums from a deceased musician’s estate and when he got home and searched through them the passport fell out. This bizarre discovery is seemingly worth $20,000! … Marvy!

Katie Price turns up in all sorts of bizarre and dodgy places, most of which centre around something sexual, and the latest is connected to Gareth Gates who’s blagging

a new career on The Big Reunion 2 with the so called supergroup 5th Story. Gareth tells us he is ashamed that he denied having sex with superboobs in the past and that it is now true … yaaawn!

The new Top Gear series has a feature called ‘Don’t-try-this-at-home nostalgia trip,’ which involved Clarkson getting out of the driving seat of a moving vehicle, clambering across the roof and getting back in the other side with his 2 lapdogs Hammond and May sitting in the back seat ... Basic Spanish for everyday needs

AT THE end of last week’s article I gave you some homework. In fact, there was rather a lot, but I hope you had a go at least! Here are the answers: TRANSLATE INTO ENGLISH No puedo firmar hoy - I can’t sign today. ¿Quieres visitar a tu amigo? - Do you want to visit your friend?

No necesito correr. - I don’t need to run.

Me gusta hacer los deberes. - I like doing homework.

No voy a leer todo el libro. - I’m not going to read all the book.

TRANSLATE INTO SPANISH Do you want to have a lot of money? - ¿Quieres tener mucho dinero?

I like watching the news. - Me gusta ver las noticias (or “el telediario”) I can’t drink and drive. - No puedo beber y conducir.

Are you going to write a letter? - ¿Vas a escribir una carta?

I need to go to the chemist. - Necesito ir a la farmacia.

Today we are going to learn a couple of ways in which these sentences can be made even longer, whilst at the same time giving us the opportunity to express more interesting ideas.

Firstly, we are going to look at one more “first person” word, which is prefiero. Prefiero means “I prefer”. Of course

we can only use “I prefer” in a sentence if we are contrasting one idea with another. For example, let’s take one of our homework sentences: “I don’t like going out much.” It’s easy to see how we can extend this idea with the contrast of what we do like doing: “I don’t like going out much; I prefer … to stay at home.” We can use words we have already learnt to express this, by changing “stay” to “be”, like this: “No me gusta salir mucho; prefiero estar en casa” (i.e. I prefer to be at home). Let’s try another one: “I don’t need to run; I prefer to walk.” “No necesito correr; prefiero andar”. What about this one: “I’m not going to read everything; I prefer to listen ”No voy a leer todo; prefiero escuchar”. We don’t always need to change the main verb in these sentences, we might want to change other information. For example: “No quiero ir a Murcia, prefiero ir a Elche” (I don’t want to go to Murcia, I prefer to go to Elche.” “No voy a comprar un vestido; prefiero comprar pantalones” (I’m not going to buy a dress; I prefer to buy trousers.”)

And now for the second way we can extend our sentences – and this really is exciting! We can use the word para to explain our purpose in during something. The way we are going to use para it means “to” in the sense of “in order to”.

Some of you might already know this word as meaning “for”

as in “para mí” (for me). However many of the “little words” in Spanish have more than one meaning, as is the case with para. The great thing as well is that after para we can still use our verbs in the infinitive form.

Let’s get straight on to an example of what I’m talking about, again using our homework as a starting point: Me gusta ver las noticias para aprender más español.

I like watching the news to learn more Spanish (in order to learn more Spanish).

If that isn’t abundantly clear, see if you can get this one: Voy a ir a Inglaterra para visitar a mi familia.

(I’m going to go to England to (in order to) visit my family.

We’re running out of space now and I think we need to spend a bit more time on this next week, so in the meantime, what do these sentences mean in English?

Cricket stars of the future come to Spain ELEVEN LEADING prospects from nine of the First Class English Counties came to Spain yesterday (13th February) for an 8-day cricket camp, to end on Friday 21st February with a competitive game against a Spanish Select 11 at the La Manga Club.

This is the first intake from the Tom Maynard Trust, established in 2013 in memory of talented Surrey and England A cricketer Tom Maynard, who tragically died in June 2012: The Tom Maynard Academy has been set up at Desert Springs Resort in Cuevas Del Almanzora, where new first class grass practice facilities will be used for the first time.

The players will undertake a program of specialist technical and conditioning work under the tutorage of some of the highest profile names in English cricket, led by Tom’s father, Former England and Glamorgan player Matt Maynard. The coaching team will also include former England International Paul Nixon, Jamie Dalrymple, Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey and former England physio Dean Conway.

The Squad will travel to La Manga Club on 21st February for a show case finale against some of the best players from the Spanish ECCL League. This game will commence at 11am and will be a 40 over per side game kindly sponsored by www.murciavillaslamanga.com.

Torrevieja verses Orihuela, declared as ‘Day of the Club’ FC TORREVIEJA has decreed this Sunday, February 16th as their Dia del Club, or special Club Day. It’s the local derby against high flying Orihuela and kicks off at 5.00pm at the Vicente García Stadium. It’s been a long time since the teams last met in a league game, going all the way back to when the team was first reformed in 1994/1995 season, when the teams did battle on January 8th, 1995. On that day, Torrevieja took the spoils with an emphatic victory and the final result of 8-1, a result that they would love to repeat, but is unlikely to happen. The price of seats will be 8 Euros for season ticket holders, 12€ for everyone else and free for children under 16 years, although they will have to provide ID if required. The Canteen will be open from 4:00pm and souvenir program will be available on the day. Orihuela are third with 35 points; Torrevieja eighth on 35 points and a win on Sunday will put the Blue and Whites back in with a serious chance of reaching the play offs. Elche’s Carson Violette voted ‘Drag Queen of Carnival 2014’

By Keith Nicol THE HOUSE FULL signs were out once again for this year’s Drag Queen contest at Toreevieja’s Municipal Theatre. The 2014 event was won by the outrageous Violette Carson with Inés Perada de Madrid and Platina Rubio de Paterna from Valencia placing as first and second bridesmaid, respectively.

Although at three hours long, the show could have done with some tightening up but the majority of the 600 audience stayed until midnight to enjoy the fun with the MC for the evening being the equally outrageous Lady G accompanied

by Imperio and last year’s Queen; ‘La Perlan’.

The quality of the seven participants was much higher than in previous editions and all the performances were enthusiastically received by the full house. This year’s jury

consisted of Lola Sanchez, Councillor for Fiestas; Andrea Andreu, Carnival Queen 2014, Nuria Girona, Professor of Dance, Miriam García Galera, Barbara Rodriguez and Francisco Ubeda Pizana as secretary of the Cultural Carnival Association of Torrevieja.

Lady G and Imperio enlivened the half an hour it took the judges to decide on the winners and in that space of time, Imperio sang a song to the beat of tanguillos of Cadiz, with new lyrics composed by her and dedicated to Torrevieja, that received the loudest applause of the night. After the intermission, the jury announced the winner of the gala and Drag Queen of Torrevieja 2014, as Violette Carson of Elche (Alicante), who won 1,000€, 500€ was awarded to Inés Perada and Platina Rubio, received third prize of 250€ and the title

Diabetes risk to spouse or partner SO YOUR spouse or partner has type 2 diabetes? New research shows that YOU may have up to 50% increased risk of developing the condition too!

How is this possible you may ask?! There are several risk factors for diabetes but until now we didn’t know that living with a diabetic was one of them!!

People with impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glycaemia Researchers at McGill University in Canada looked at six different studies involving 75,498 couples and found that partners of Diabetics had a 26% increased risk of developing the condition themselves. When blood tests were used in the studies this figure increased to 50%.

Senior author of the study, Kaberi Dasgupta, commented: “When we talk about family history of Type 2 Diabetes, we generally assume that the risk increase that clusters in families results from genetic factors. What our analyses demonstrate is that risk is shared by spouses. This underscores the effects of shared environments, attitudes, and behaviours, which presumably underlie the shared risk.”

In other words, couples living together tend to share the same lifestyle. They will often eat the same foods, their exercise levels may be similar and they may have the same attitudes towards health and wellbeing.

See smoking for what it is with Fast Track Hypnosis WHENEVER I come across a smoker I can’t help but think: “Quit while you still can.” The Hypnotherapist in me can never sleep!

Smoking is a killer. In Ireland alone, around 7,000 smoking-related deaths occur every year. Smoking is an addiction. We all know that. But what most people don’t realise is that it’s one that is easily beaten. Quitting smoking using Hypnosis is one of the most effective methods around.

Some people don’t realise the power of Hypnosis. It has never been more accepted yet is still viewed as an ‘alternative’ treatment.

How often do you have to use pills or nasal sprays? How often do you have to replace patches or switch to a new stick of gum? Consider how much all of that costs! Visit the Sierra Espuña

By Clive Palmer THE REGIONAL park of the Sierra Espuña in Murcia is a wonderful expanse in which to wander, whether among the extensive forested areas or out in the open. There are numerous walks of varying length and difficulty which can be followed and details are available in guide books and from information from tourist offices in the region.

The Sierra Espuña is, of course, particularly notable for the remarkable golf ball like shape adorning its highest point, the Morron de Espuña, at 1583 metres (around 5200 feet). This forms part of a military communications’ facility which is out of bounds to the public. However, the second highest point, the summit of Pedro Lopez, at 1569 metres, is relatively easily accessible on good tracks for a half day excursion from the Collado Mangueta car park, itself at 1387 metres (slightly over 4500 feet and, therefore, already higher than the summit of Ben Nevis!). A narrow and winding mountain road goes right over the Sierra from Alhama de Murcia to the Totana-Bullas road, via the Collado Bermejo (a magical viewpoint) from where a similar road diverts up to the Collado Mangueta, and thence to the military station. The road is quite drivable, except in bad weather though always with care and slowly.

We have spent many happy days walking in

various parts of the Sierra Espuña. There is a rich variety of plant, bird and animal life. We have seen eagles circling, and, especially in the quieter upland areas, you can stumble across a herd of muflón, or Atlas sheep, which are the size of small deer.

However, have your camera ready, as muflón are timorous beasts and flee as soon as they see, hear or smell you! Wild boar (jabali) sometimes can be seen at the restaurant (Fuente del Hilo) on the road up from Alhama, where food is put out for them, although they are not to be approached and can be dangerous especially when they have young.

One unique feature in the higher Sierra, well worth a visit, is the snow houses (pozos de la nieve). These massive structures, over 20 feet deep and originally domed, are several hundred years old and provided ice to surrounding towns in the summer and autumn up to the 20th Century. A relatively short walk from the Collado Mangueta car park will take you to the ruins of the Cartagena pozos (one recently reconstructed) in one direction and those of Murcia City in another – though do make sure you know where you are going before you start! Also remember that the Sierra is a mountain environment and you need to be suitably equipped, attired and provisioned for walks, avoiding severe weather.

Cricket returns to Torrevieja

By Keith Nicol THE CRICKET season is just around the corner and the fledgling Torrevieja Cricket Club are readying themselves for the new season. On Saturday 25th February, Torrevieja CC play their first match of the 2014 season, a friendly match against a team from La Manga. It will give an indication as to whether the training carried out over winter has had a positive effect or if more is needed to be done to play at this level. The game starts at 11.00am at the athletics track at the back of the Torrevieja sports centre.

The genesis of the team started out as San Fulgencio Cricket Club but at the beginning of 2012 they were approached by Torrevieja Council to form a new team to represent the town as Torrevieja CC. The Council have since provided them with a pitch on the athletics track in the sports centre, a separate training ground, access to changing rooms and a lockable storage area for all their equipment. All this without charge in order to encourage

Torrevieja’s clean sweep WHILE TORREVIEJA’S waits for the possible building of an ice rink, the city can still boast to having one of the best hockey squads in the region, be it that they play roller and not ice hockey. Last week the Senior and youth teams took a clean sweep on the road over Castellón Club ‘Sagunto Wings’.

The Club de Hockey línea ‘Halcones Torrevieja’, Torrevieja Hawks, registered three wins in three games in the benjamín, alevín and senior categories. This result keeps the alevins in second place in the league while the seniors hold top spot.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the senior team travel to Elche to face Club ‘Titans’ while all teams look forward to having one of their most successful in their short history.

ON SUNDAY, February 2nd, the AGM of La Peña Madridista, the Real Madrid supporters club, was held in their Torrevieja headquarters, located at Calle Pedro Lorca 38, on the street corner with Calle Apolo. The meeting was followed by a traditional Madrid meal, in a friendly and festive atmosphere. The agenda included a new program of activities and events to be performed by the members of the Peña during 2014, such as trips to see games of Real Madrid CF and recognition of the associations oldest members and those working hard for the club. Among several proposals put forward included the invitation to the Peña of Real Madrid former players, management, staff and journalists. And while the Peña is a very Spanish affair, they are well aware that in Torrevieja there are hundreds, if not thousands of International residents and visitors that support Real Madrid and all are encouraged to become part of the Peña. Arrow keys stopped working HI AUNTY: I am running Windows XP on IE8, on my laptop and all has been fine until now. However, I have suddenly lost my up/down arrows, and had these replaced by a small runner at the side which has to be controlled by my fingerpad in order to scroll up or down. Can you suggest a way to get back to my arrows, as the current system is really difficult to operate and keeps jerking up and down, and sometimes the page goes up when I am scrolling down, and vice versa. Hope you can suggest a remedy. Kind regards, Terry.

Aunty says: The up and down arrows usually control the slider, so the runner has always been there. In fact the arrows may still be there - at the top and bottom of the slider - but for whatever reason they are no longer on display.

The only thing that may help, but not guaranteed, is to go into the Internet Options in Internet Explorer, and perform an Internet Explorer Reset. (Note this may lose things like stored password for websites). But there are other, simpler ways to scroll up and down the page.

You can use the up / down arrow keys on your keyboard, to scroll up and down slowly.

And you can use the Page Up and Page Down buttons to scroll up and down a page at a time.

And some laptops, on their mouse page, have the ability to scroll using the extreme right of the pad.

All a lot easier and faster than trying to move the mouse icon over the up down buttons on the screen!

Wifi connections

HI AUNTY: I have an Asus notebook N61Jv and since the start of the year the internal wifi does not show a connection to the internet. I have used the wifi side button to switch it ON and OFF and I see the wireless indication mast appear but it is not ticked to show a connection. The hot key function Fn-F2 shows the same indication, the wireless indication appears but there is no tick. I have connected an external wifi to a USB input and I now have a connection to the internet. Does this mean that the internal wifi is unserviceable or could it be something simple, like a software fault? With regards, Mary.

Aunty says: It sounds like you may have a software fault with the WiFi driver.

Usually, going into the Device / Equipment settings via the control panel, you can ‘uninstall’ the wireless network adaptor. Rebooting the PC should reload the driver and then it should function correctly. Picasa 3

DEAR AUNTY: Hopefully you can help on this one. We have been using Picasa 3 for quite a number of years now. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago when I tried to send some photographs to friends, I was told that the programme had crashed! However, I can still completely use the full system - adding new photographs when downloaded from our digital camera. Our only concern is losing all the photographs and titles which we have put on. Also I cannot utilise the new Google Auto+ system for Picaca photographs. Look forward to your advice on this matter. Sex! Mind your language!!!

THERE IS one topic in any discussion on golf that will always generate some contentious comments.

IT IS also one which has produced enough humorous anecdotes to fell a small forest.

Irrespective of your status or ability and even if you are not a golfer - you will have an opinion.

It is ladies in golf.

So here is my “personal” position.

Over the last couple of decades as a golfer, I have observed on numerous and in various locations, male golfers drag themselves around a course and occasionally do so at a pace which could best be described as turgid. And yet these are often the first to complain when there is a lady golfer ahead of them or, heaven forbid, a ladies four-ball.

LADIES TOUR EVENT I was very lucky to be a spectator when the Ladies European Tour was held for a few years at La Sella and, along with many others I have stood and marvelled at the sight of young girls, who would have be blown

over by a medium strength wind, (with the possible exception of Laura!) send their tee shots further than many of us go on holiday.

Despite positive movements towards equality, there is undoubtedly some ingrained prejudice which surfaces whenever the male confronts the female golfer and it appears to me to have permeated into the female psyche.

Why? Because I have witnessed ladies playing with undue haste when they are being followed by a group of men. Is there some instinct that compels them to rush off the green as if to demonstrate - “Look, we are moving quickly!”

I have never noticed similar behaviour from a group of men. Maybe it is an Alpha Male syndrome.

“I don’t have to worry about the group behind me. They will be happy to wait while I take my fourth shot out of the bunker - which I needn’t repair.”

Tony M - Ah yes you went off to see Michael Buble in Barcelona. I bet he was excellent.

Campbell - Absolutely superb but I did leave you with a very good substitute Tony M - Yes you did. Young Mark from Wales sounding like a carbon copy of Tom Jones.

Campbell - He says he doesn’t sing like Tom Jones but he certainly talks just like him.

Tony M - I think that probably happens all the time.

LADIES DAY One other sexist element of golf life that stills prevails in many clubs in the UK is the Ladies Day. I have discovered that this is usually a Tuesday. Presumably on the basis that most ladies will be too busy with chores on a Monday following a busy weekend and therefore they are deserving of a break come Tuesday.

Why is that still necessary?

Most golf clubs ceased to be the domain of the antediluvian Secretary who enforces the ‘no-coloured-socks-withknee-length-shorts-on-a-Thursday-unlessit-is-the-third-week-in-a-month’ type of rule. The situation where gentlemen have a Spike Bar and ladies are barred, has hopefully disappeared from the golf landscape never to return. Thankfully much of the stuffiness has gone from golf and yet many clubs still retain the Ladies Day convention. It is not necessarily a bad thing but surely if there were to be total equality then Ladies Day should alternate on a daily basis with Gentlemens’ Day. Of course that would never happen.

In the meantime my experience is that lady golfers are generally more patient, more considerate and more courteous than their male equivalent.

I must reiterate that that is my personal viewpoint, however if you are going to disagree I should warn you that I do not promise anonymity!

Motoring news snippets WE ARE advised that the EU is suggesting that all vehicles are fitted with a remotely operated electronic switch so that the engines can be switched off. The idea is that in the event of a criminal trying to escape from a police chase, pursuit police can immobilise the vehicle safely so not only is the chase over, but also other road users are protected in the event of a crash.

With this in mind it is an excellent idea but let us consider how else this device can be used: Any owner who has not paid their annual taxes on their vehicle can also be immobilised. This includes those who have officially taken the vehicle off the road for long term renovation.

Speeders going through a speed trap can be switched off. Of course the speed trap can be controlled by a GPS system incorporated in the vehicle so there does not have to be an actual camera at the roadside.

Anyone who overstays their time in a paying, parking

area can be switched off until payment is made.

If you report your car as stolen you could do it quickly so it could be stopped before it is loaded onto a low loader and transported out of the country or stripped for spares.

The mind boggles at the possibilities, except that there are always ways of overcoming electronic devices. However, how would these devices be fitted to the older cars where older fuel and ignition systems are the norm?

The UK historic classification moves to 1974. If you have a classic British vehicle first registered before 1974, it now qualifies for zero VED taxes.

I had an Austin maxi, basically an excellent family car but after realising that the car body was rusting away under that paint, I sold it and two years later it was scrap. The price I was paid reflected the deteriorating condition and I advised the new owner, to get it completely paint-stripped and repainted but he ignored the advice.
