Driving drunk at 237 kph GUARDIA CIVIL Trafico were more than a little surprised this week when an Audi A6 whizzed by them at 237 kilometres an hour, or just shy of 147 mph, in a 120 kph zone of motorway.

by Keith Nicol SOMETHING MUST have been in the air because the following day Guardia arrested another driver for doing a more sedate 160 kph, however this time the car was in a 60 max zone. Both drivers were arrested and charged with crimes against road safety, speeding and for one, DUI. The driver who certainly caused the most surprise was travelling at 237 kph while under the influence of alcohol along the AP-7 motorway while the other was at 160 on a stretch of the N-340, that’s restricted to 60, as reported by the command of the Guardia Civil from Alicante in a press release on Wednesday.

The first of the drivers, aged 39, was stopped on Saturday March 29th, at kilometre 750 of the AP-7 motorway, passing through the toll booth of Los Montesinos, heading toward

To add to the driver’s woes, he was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol proving positive in two tests and was double the permitted rate of 0.25 mg / l. This driver is accused of committing crimes against the Road safety speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving, and was brought before the Magistrate’s Court number 5 in Torrevieja. On Sunday, just outside Elche on the N-340, another driver was caught in a vehicle travelling at 164 kilometres per hour on a stretch limited to 60 km / hour, which is a crime against road safety because they were exceeding the speed limit on a road outside of town by 80 kph. Charges were brought against the driver, age 47 and of Spanish nationality against road safety.

Grant support for Marina Alta

by Jack Troughton TOWN HALLS in the Marina Alta have received 16 million euros in grant aid since 2011 from the provincial government thanks to the lobbying of three politicians.

The trio are Deputies – or MPs – on the Diputicion de Alicante and work hard to secure funding to make major improvements.

Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi is one of the three. He became a Deputy in July 2011 and on Monday explained his work for the provincial government to Englishspeaking residents.

The meeting at the Parador hotel was a landmark, the mayor decided to address the audience in English. “It is a big challenge for me...I hope you will excuse my mistakes because during the last few days I have not slept a lot, I have not slept very well thinking of this moment.”

He said the Diputacion had responsibility for managing the local economy, administration and its functions within Alicante and was established in 1822.

Mr Chulvi said area had a population of almost 2 million people and the numbers of deputies was set by law, currently 31 - made up of 20 Partido Popular members and 11 PSOE. “Individual MPs are elected internally by the vote of councillors of the respective political parties in the districts. In my case it is the Marina Alta and PSOE,” he added.

Blanca tourism board, the committee for infrastructure and economic development, and also attends monthly meetings of the Alicante government.

“I receive a salary from the Alicante government,” he said. “Because of this I renounced my salary as Mayor of Javea – the only mayor to do so – because in these difficult times I do not believe a public servant should receive two salaries.”

And he said he believed there were benefits for Javea from his becoming a member of the regional authority. “We have better access to grants and subsidies and the ability to lobby for those grants and subsidies.

“The previous government, apart from getting money for flood damage, were much more modest in obtaining them.”

Mr Chulvi said when he took office

in 2011 Javea received only 7,204€ in grants, this year it will be 487,000€ for a number of projects, including road works to remove “accident black spots”.

A victim of the mayor’s hard work was his nine-year-old car. “In 2001 I bought a new car...on credit! My previous car had reached the end of its life, it actually died on the motorway,” he said. “Since 2011 I have driven almost 60,000km on official business.”

He concluded the meeting by telling English-speaking residents the town had launched a “Javea Says No’ campaign to fight the prospect of oil exploration off its shores.

“We must protect our beaches, marine reserve, tourism and fishing. We have to protect our sea environment and our fauna. We are taking the battle to the European Parliament.”

Pool tragedy in Javea A THREE-YEAR-OLD little boy drowned in a private swimming pool in Javea this week. The tragedy happened in the Casalades urbanization where a mother and her child were staying in a holiday villa. By the time the mother noticed her child was missing, it was too late to revive him despite the efforts of the attending SAMU ambulance crew.

Protest rally in Benidorm If you care about Benidorm and what goes in the town, then make a note of this date – Saturday 12th April.

by Irena Bodnarec At 6pm there will be a protest rally outside the Town Hall – jointly organized by ´Platforma Ciudadana´, the neighborhood association; ´SUP´ - the National Police Union and ´British Benidorm´ - a group of British business owners.

The primary aim of the rally is to highlight the Regional Government in Alicante that changes need to be made in the law, so that the police here in Benidorm can take appropriate action on security issues.

As in all tourist destinations, crime happens – and unfortunately, Benidorm is no different.

However, one thing that appears to be almost exclusive to Benidorm are the ´peamen´ or ´trileros´ in Spanish and the scam which they operate. Do not stop to watch if you see them - they work in groups, generally appearing as spectators to the naïve, but are in fact professional gangs of con merchants. The National Police are the ones that deal with this type of

crime, but are extremely frustrated with the constant criticism aimed at them about the lack of action to address this problem. Until the law is changed, which has to come from the Regional Government in Alicante, their hands are tied. They make arrests but because of current laws, if caught with less than 400€ they generally only get a caution from the courts and are released to reoffend.

The rally also wants to highlight the lenient sentences which need to be changed for other crimes, namely pickpockets, muggings and unregulated sellers – which includes ´free blanket trips´. The objective is to pressure relevant officials from the Regional Government to sit together with the SUP and Neighborhood Associations to discuss and push forward urgent legislation, by bringing in tougher laws and punishments to make the streets of Benidorm a safer place for all.

Altea residents collar council on new doggy beach

ALTEA MAY consider designating a beach area for dogs in response to popular demand from local residents who have generated a petition bearing 150 signatures, started by resident Monika Klostermann via www.change.org El Campello was the first to unleash a doggy initiative by ear-marking the Punta del Riu Sec for pooches, with Villajoyosa following in response to a 500-signature petition from residents. In Benidorm 1,405 signatures have been gathered but the jury is still out.

Fantastic start to the year

For the first 2 months of this year, hotels registered 392,383 visitors, an increase of 40,000. International tourists are the driving forces behind this surge, demonstrating the continued popularity of Benidorm and the Costa Blanca as a holiday destination. New kit for Proteccion Civil

by Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF Paquitas Country Club have donated a much-needed ‘scoop stretcher’ to the newly formed Benidoleig Proteccion Civil.

The lightweight aluminium stretcher is used to lift injured people off the ground and transfer them to a conventional stretcher or trolley – where it unclips and is removed without causing further trauma.

Simon Lunn, the group’s co-ordinator, said the new piece of equipment was vital for lifting an injured person off the ground after an accident on the road or mountainside.

“It is a very useful piece of kit,” he said. “It keeps a person’s body stable while they are moved – it is very important because a person suffering a bad injury can easily be killed by just moving them.”

The Benidoleig team continue to be busy – an emergency evacuation exercise was recently held at the village school, and the team travelled to Valencia to help marshal crowds

during the annual ‘fallas’ celebrations, as well as helping with fiestas in nearby Ondara. Simon added: “We go all over the place.”

Handing over the 150€ needed to buy the stretcher were Paquitas Chairman Bill Hampson, Vice-chairman Sheila Woodham and member Janet Hills.

The group was found in 1993 at a Beniarbeig restaurant and takes its unu-

sual name from one of the restaurant staff. It currently has 185 members.

Paquitas Country Club now meets at El Cid Restaurant in Benidoleig and also holds a number of outside events and functions.

The work was half completed when Gomez claimed he had money troubles and was advanced the final 15,000€ to complete the job – the money to be used exclusively on the Yardley’s pool. “He made a promise to return to the house to start work a few days later – he never turned up but his workers did,” said John. “On speaking to the workers we found out they hadn’t been paid for two weeks and immediately I became suspicious.” John said he rang the businessman who again claimed he was having cash flow problems.

“I spoke in depth to one of the workers and asked him how many other pools they had contracted throughout the area. “He very kindly took me to several pools from Gandia down to Alfaz, all of which had been left in a similar state, unfinished.” John spoke to home owners and neighbours to obtain statements and details of the contracts. They found seven more victims. “It is likely there are many more outstanding.” John and Liz discovered the Pedregeur business address of AG Pools did not exist – in fact the street name on “convincing” documentation was imaginary.

“He was quite meticulous, he got all the pools to a certain degree of completeness then asked for second payments and did a runner,” he added. “He obviously thought he could get away with it. He had done it before and even after defrauding us, rather foolishly, went to a friend of mine to give him a quote – the intent was obviously there.” Liz said at court Gomez was overheard discussing his assets – including a Swiss bank account – with his lawyer. “He slipped up because he said he had all this money in Switzerland. His bank accounts are being frozen, and his car and home embargoed. “There was always something funny about him – he would never look you in the eye.”

THE UNIVERSITY Hospital de Fuenlabrada in Madrid has allegedly been accused of mixing infectious and oncology patients with maternity cases.

by Jan Gamm THE NURSING union has expressed concern that mothers and their newly born babies could be at risk. The maternity department at Fuenlabrada is considered to be one of the best in Spain, but as the country’s birth rate has dwindled in recent years several empty beds in the maternity wing have been taken by patients suffering with respiratory infections and other diseases. In 2008 the hospital delivered 2,936 women: in 2013 almost a thousand less - 2,026.

Nursing professionals have warned of the dangers of compromising the sterilisation facilities on the ward and recommended that the situation be rectified immediately.

Drunk taxi driver charged THE GUARDIA Civil traffic police stopped and breathalysed a taxi driver on Sunday 23rd March and found him to be four times over the blood/alcohol limit. The driver, a 32-year-old Spanish man, had a passenger in his cab at the time, en route from Barajas Airport to Villanueva del Camus. He has been charged with driving offences and could face between six months and two years’ imprisonment as well as the loss of his license for a year or more.

Man protests on dome of St. Peter’s Basilica

AN ITALIAN businessman known as Marcello Di Finizio climbed out onto the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, calling for intervention by the Vatican in the Italian government’s austerity policies. Di Finizio, a café owner from Trieste, remained perched on a ledge on the 137m dome created by Michelangelo for three days, displaying a banner that read: “Stop for God’s sake, you are killing us all. Give us back our lives.” He came down from the dome cold, exhausted and with a leg injury he sustained during his climb. He was immediately arrested by the Gendarmerie. Meanwhile Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has promised to ‘reboot the economy’ by reducing taxes, slashing the costs of Italy’s bureaucracy and promoting businesses.

30% increase in car registrations in Murcia NATIONWIDE CAR registrations in March, 2014 totalled 79,929 units, compared to 72,678 in the same month of 2013, represent an increase of 10%. The Murcia region has been one of the communities where registration has grown most, with over a 30% increase.

This result sees the close of the first quarter of 2014 with 202,128 cars registered, 11.8% higher than 180,725 in January-March 2013, as reported by automobile manufacturers associations (Anfac), sellers (Ganvam) and Faconauto (Federación de Asociaciones

de Concesionarios de la Automoción)). March’s result is seen as a very positive sign for individual demand, helped along by the fifth edition of Plan PIVE Plan. Another possible reason for growth is that there have been more dealing days, opposed to last year when Easter fell in March.

Sales show an actual 27.9% growth in the quarter. Company fleets have increased for the second consecutive month in March at 24.3%, which is 7.5% rise in the three months although car leasing has declined mainly influenced by the Easter effect. David Barrientos, director of communication for Anfac said: “this is the seventh consecutive monthly rise that the Plan PIVE 5 supports strong performance with the fact that they have already spent more than half of the funds of 175 million euros.” Ganvam president, Juan Antonio Sanchez Torres, said that “we are still fac-

ing a weak domestic demand and will most likely end the year at 800,000 units, which is in the plans to help ‘buy medicine’ but it is only a stop gap until the credit crunch ends and confidence returns.”

Geographically, in March, registrations have grown mainly because of tourism in Canarias bt 53.3%, while the market orthodoxy has especially influenced Cantabria (33.9%), Asturias (33.7%) and Murcia (30.4%). At the Baleares (36.4%) and Valencia (15.1%).

The brand with more registrations in the month was Volkswagen (7,722 units), which has established leadership throughout the quarter (18,132). The hairraising risks of bikini waxing THE SPANISH Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) has warned of the risks

of removing pubic hair by shaving, waxing or by any other means. The risk of developing genital warts is increased significantly and also the transmission of sexually transmitted infections. Dr Grimalt, Professor of Dermatology at the International University of Barcelona, pointed out: “If pubic hair remainsunshaven and condoms are used correctly the risk of infection is almost zero. Pubic hair has a protective function against inevitable friction of the skin during sex. If both sexual partners have a hairless

pubis, any infection found in the skin of one of them will inevitably transmit to the other.” He recommends trimming of the hair as an alternative to total removal.

Expats keep EMAUS alive

EMAUS PRESIDENT Montserrat Fitur has paid tribute to Costa Blanca expats for their vital support to the charity that cares for disadvantaged children across the region. She was at the El Paraiso Restaurant in Par-

cent to collect a donation of 1,635€ and two collection buckets of loose change – raised at a monthly quiz night that collects for the charity.

“The foreigners are so important for us,” she told RTN. “Without the help of the expats, EMAUS would have died a long time ago.” Montse revealed that EMAUS had not been able to pay its workers since November because funding had not been released by the Valencia government.

“Our employees have not had a salary since November and for us as employers it is a terrible situation as well because we rely on this funding – you have to be a little bit crazy at EMAUS because it is an awful situation,” she said.

MONEY “I just hope we get some money through soon, but the government in Valencia hasn’t got any money either.”

Montse added: “The director of EMAUS is calling Valencia every day hoping for better news.”

The El Paraiso quiz is normally held on the last Wednesday of the month and has become a popular night out – with the restaurant producing dinner at cost price so more is added to the charity total. Funds are also raised through Alan Wood’s ‘Wheel of Fortune’, a ‘daft question’ round at the end of the contest, and by people emptying their pockets of loose change into ‘shrapnel’ buckets.

Four legged friends at work ARCADYS IS promoting a project to provide therapeutic pets to the disadvantaged. Dogs that might otherwise be destroyed are utilised to provide emotional support and companionship in homes for the elderly, hospices for the terminally ill and even in prisons.

Arcadys in an independent non-profit organisation established in 1993 to defend animal rights and find workable solutions for abandoned pets. Olaf, a Labrador cross, lives in a senior citizens’ centre in Burriana. He is shared among 240 elderly inmates who take it in turns to walk and feed him. Dogs are also being used as prison visitors, having an uplifting and calming effect on long term inmates.

Guardia Civil busts weapons workshop

by Jam Gamm THE GUARDIA Civil has dismantled a clandestine weapons workshop in Laguna de Duero (Valladolid). The confiscated haul of weapons includes more than 100 guns in an investigation that resulted in six arrests spread over nine provinces throughout

Spain. Also seized were huge quantities of gunpowder plus machinery and tools used in the manufacture of firearms and 47,200€ in cash. Those now in custody were arrested in Valladolid; Valencia; Orense; Granada; Vizcaya and Malaga. They are charged with arms possession, trafficking and illicit arms manufacturing.

New vaccines for Spain

THE SPANISH Association of Pediatrics has announced a unique ‘optimal immunisation’ schedule in line with the epidemiological and social needs of the country. Serafin Málaga, President of the ASP, said that last year the Ministry of Health unified an immunisation schedule described as “minimal” but with some vaccines omitted. This week a conference on vaccine in Zaragoza brought health professionals together to discuss the re-emergence of diseases preventable by vaccine and the importance of maintaining a unified coverage across all communities, especially for children.

Passport forms I RECENTLY applied for my UK passport using the new online application process. The questions were easy, payment was swift and in no time at all I was at the end of the process and ready to print off the application..

HOWEVER, IT clearly states that the print settings should not be adjusted and to print the form as shown.

I followed these instructions and was dismayed to see that the top part of the form which included my name and details had been “chopped” off. Being a clever chap and being used to mindless paper processing from the numerous authorities here in Spain, I had a brainwave to print out a further form with the print settings adjusted so my details in all their glory could be seen. I duly signed both copies and put a covering note with the application explaining what I had done and why. My wife’s passport was also due for renewal so I did exactly the same again. After a few weeks my wife’s passport arrived.

One week passed and I received an email from the passport office advising me that my application could not be progressed as the form was not the right size and they could not scan the signature. I immediately replied back, giving my wife’s application number and asked them to review it as hers had been processed. I am pleased to say that the following a morning I received a call from the passport office who had seen my email and attempted to scan it again and it had worked and my passport was being sent out!

I would like to praise the passport office for their excellent customer service and also to warn other readers that if they have the same problem to send two signed copies like I did and hopefully they won’t have any problems.

America’s latest data THE LATEST data published in the 10th February issue of Time International Magazine entitled ‘US Airports With the Most Gun Seizures’ states: “1,813: Number of guns confiscated by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) at airport security checkpoints in 2013 - a 16.5% jump from 2012. So the easy access to firearms in America includes passengers about to board flights. Anybody know if there are trans-Atlantic ocean liners still crossing The Puddle?

Travelling expenses entitlement IN REPLY to the letter written in the 21st – 27th March edition headed ‘Travelling To and Fro’, Patricia is entitled to claim travelling expenses if she is referred from Denia Hospital to Benidorm for Radiotherapy. On the completion of her treatment, Benidorm would fill out a form that shows the number of times she has attended. This form must then be presented

at the Denia Hospital. A form has to be completed with her bank details and contact details etc. This is then stamped by Denia and sent off for approval.

There is a set tariff and the amount paid out is based on the patient’s distance from their home to Benidorm and back. They do not refund motorway expenses. The monies are paid eventually into the patient’s bank

account. The person coming from Pego should do this too. If you need more help or advice on what to do then come to the Help of Denia and Marina Alta desk at Denia Hospital in the main entrance where we will be happy to assist and translate if necessary.

It is because sand from the Sahara has blown across Europe, missing you guys down on the Costa Blanca, and mixed itself with some fumes from France to dump on us Brits. Yup, pollution warnings have gone out…

Recipe for success BRITISH AMBASSADOR Simon Manley and Spain’s three Michelin star chef David Munoz got together in a kitchen to cook up a traditional treat – roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.

by Jack Troughton Wearing Union Jack aprons, the 46-yearold diplomat and the 33-year-old chef – who recently won a third star to become the youngest Spaniard to achieve the top Michelin ranking – worked on a modern version of the classic dish...with a Spanish twist.

At first glance, this may look an unusual mix but the pair share three passions – food (naturally), running, and the United Kingdom.

And so David – who is soon to open a London restaurant – was invited to the ambassador’s official residence in Madrid to meet the diplomat for the cook off.

He threw in horseradish, papaya, and an herb found growing on Spanish riverbanks, to create something slightly different to the usual Sunday roast.

The chef’s new Mayfair base StreetXO will open in the summer and will offer the culinary style that has made tables at his DiverXO restaurant in Madrid desirable and almost impossible to obtain.

CAPITAL David explained why he chose the UK capital city for his new venture. “I love it. I lived

in London for six years and learnt almost everything there. London’s huge gastronomic diversity can be found nowhere else.”

HUNDREDS OF people ran or walked in the annual MABS Family Fun Run on Sunday helping put more than 3,000 Euros into the cancer charity’s coffers.

by Jack Troughton A cheerful mixture of adults and children - along with the odd family pet – started and finished at Sol Park, Moraira, with British, Dutch, German and a record number of Spanish people taking part.

A total of 305 official entries were recorded by the MABS Cancer Support Group and while prizes were distributed for the fastest home over the 5km course, everyone was declared a winner.

MABS President Jacqui Phillips MBE said there was an impressive increase in the numbers of people taking part on 12 months ago and thanked the volunteers who had made the run possible.

“We have actually run out of race cards and bottles of water,” she said. “But there is an absolutely great atmosphere and it has been a very good day. We hope to raise more than 3,000€.

“Next year we hope even more people will turn up in fancy dress because it makes it even more colourful and fun.”

Everyone is invited to the Benitachell concert, which is free, and the choir will sing a mixture of old favourites and new pieces only recently added to the repertoire. Since it was founded in 2007, the choir has gone strength to strength.

By Irena Bodnarec LAST WEEKENDS International Day in the town of La Nucia was a triumph – with well over a five thousand visitors attending the first such event, at the towns ´Camilo Cano´ sports complex. A real honour was that a British contingency, the Scottish pipes and drummers were asked to open the event – and who travelled especially from Torrevieja for the occasion. In their speeches, the Mayor, Bernabe Cano and Bart Gomans, Councillor for Foreign Residents both spoke of the importance of integration within the community – especially significant as half the registered residents of the town are not Spanish. Thirty three different nationalities were represented, with the United Kingdom taking 3 separate stands for the Royal British Legion, U3A and HELP International. Throughout the day there was a program of activities, with singing and dancing from the various participating countries to keep the audience entertained. Each stand showcased the best of their culture, with traditional dress, memorabilia and a selection of food and drink on offer, native to their country.

Table manners GOOD FOOD and good company is the philosophy behind the U3A Marina Baixa’s Dining Out Group as it enjoys international cuisine.

by Jack Troughton Last week the group tucked into a typical British roast – including Yorkshire pudding – at the Peppermill Restaurant in Benidorm but as an international band of diners they enjoy food from around the globe.

The group also has a non-seating reservation policy, encouraging people to mix, although if people do want to sit together all they must do is arrive at the venue together.

Next month the Dining Out Group meets at the Deja Vue Resaurant in Alfaz del Pi, the last lunchtime meal before switching to evenings. May sees the diners at the Wok in La Nucia, and June’s gathering is at La Cova Restaurant, El Campello.

U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at the Social Centre, Albir, at 10.30am for an 11am start. The next meeting is 28th April.

by Keith Nicol THE IMPORTANCE of the Sports City as a major tourist attraction received another boost this week as the first group of Swedish footballers arrived in Torrevieja. The arrival boosts the numbers of International athletes who have specifically chosen Torrevieja as their training base, to 330, or the first quarter of the year. Although football might make up the majority of those training in Torrevieja, a total of 15 sports are represented.

This newest group of athletes from Sweden, consisted of 32 players from Uddevalla Football

Club, who play in the equivalent of the third division of Sweden. They considered Torrevieja as the best option for their winter training break.

Their athletic director and coach said “this is the first year we have decided to conduct a sports campus outside Sweden, as the club had never before made this type of trip before and we are among the first teams in Sweden to do so.” Their sporting director stressed that although they knew about Torrevieja’s sports facilities compared to other cities around Spain, they did not expect them to be as complete and modern, and even expanding, as they are.

Attracting new markets and looking for assist-

ance from agents and sporting groups is one of the main focus points for the Department of Sports City of Torrevieja and its Sports Tourism Department. Their main objective is to introduce Torrevieja into new markets that will generate a constant flow of tourists to the city.

Of the 330 athletes that have chosen Torrevieja as their training base, some of the main sports include footballers, athletes, tennis players and rugby players from different countries, genres and categories. As we approach Easter, the sports Department announced that they expect more athletes to arrive over the next few months.

THIS WEEK marked the 75th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War on 1st April 1939. The surrender of the Republican side was announced late in the evening on Easter Saturday, via Radio Nacional de Burgos, capital of the Nationalist side. The announcement was read by broadcaster Fernández de Córdoba and edited by General Franco himself: “On this day, Nationalist troops have reached their last military objectives.

The war is over. Generalissimo Franco: Burgos April 1, 1939.” The short message was followed by a bugle call. The duel to the death lasted a thousand days, killing half a million, according to statistics, although it is still said that a more realistic figure is nearer to one million. It was followed by post-war hunger, fear and repression in a militarized state. It would take almost 40 years for Spain to reach democracy.

Numbers have gradually increasing year after year from the 142 recorded in 1999 to 417 cases in 2012, the last year for which data is available, according to statistics deaths from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

by Keith Nicol The neurologist and director of the Clinical Dementia Unit Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca of Murcia, Almagro Carmen Antunez explained that this increase is due to several reasons, such as the increase in life expectancy in Spain. This implies that more people are reaching older ages and therefore along with it, an increase in the incidence of diseases associated with aging such as Alzheimer’s. In fact, Antunez explains Alzheimer is a disease that occurs most frequently in old age and is one of the “worst” because of its devastating effects on the patient and their family environment.

The second reason for the increase in mortality from Alzheimer’s, according Antunez is because knowledge of the disease and symptoms “increased” among the population and, because of this, doctors make more diagnoses, while recognizing they do not know much about it themselves yet.

Members of the theatre group have given up sending each other Christmas cards and instead buy balloons in news sheet ‘Behind the Scenes’ to wish each other the best of the season. The money collected by the sale of the balloons is donated to a local charity – and Grant A Wish will use the donation to help the Shelter for Homeless Men in Gandia which is run by two Franciscan monks and relies entirely on voluntary support.

Amendment of Spanish Consumer and User Law EXPANDING RIGHTS in line with EU Directive.

THE RECENTLY issued Law 3/2014, modifies the Spanish Consumers and Users Law and brings the Spanish National Law closer to EU Directive 2011/83/EU regarding consumers rights.

Among the many new features we have to give a special mention to the following: - The concept and definition of Consumer and User is being enlarged. Thus individuals acting outside their commercial or professional activity, etc., also companies (enterprises) and entities without legal personality acting as non-profit organisations outside their business activity, are considered from now on consumers and users.

This is a relevant change, since a professional or a firm will now be considered consumers and users even if the service contracted is not connected or will not form part of their professional activity, production process, etc.

- Consumers and users’ rights for obtaining pre-contractual information are reinfored. Thus,

information regarding the after-sales conditions, the legal and commercial guarantee of the product, the compatibility of digital products with different operating systems, etc. must be provided before signing the contract.

- There is a new definition of distance contracts, including all those concluded by post, internet, telephone or fax.

- The withdrawal period for distance and off-premises contracts is extended up to fourteen calendar days.

If the consumer and user is not informed about this right, this will lead to a withdrawal period of twelve months after the expiry date of the initial period.

- Therefore, in order to determine if we are entitled to withdraw from a contract, it is fundamental to check the information provided. If it was not precise, clear and truthful, we can terminate the contract during the period of the indicated year.

How safe is the pension’s lifeboat?

THE DEMISE of “gold plated” final salary pensions in the UK is much in the headlines these days.

ACCORDING TO employee benefits consultancy JLT, the UK’s private sector final salary pensions were collectively carrying a deficit of £171 billion at the end of January this year.

That is quite a hole in the accounts and naturally prompts the question: “What happens if my employer can’t afford its pension promise?” The good news is that private sector salary related pensions enjoy the backing of the Pension Protection Fund (PPF). This is a lifeboat funded by pension scheme levies – it is not government-“backed”. It is not possible for an employer to simply dump their pension liabilities into the PPF; in order to qualify for compensation the sponsoring employer must be officially insolvent and the company’s pension scheme must be underfunded with little hope of recovery.

The compensation afforded to the member depends on whether they were already drawing their pension at the time their

employer became insolvent. Where the pension was in payment, the entire pension is protected. Where the pension has yet to commence, compensation is limited to 90% of the accrued pension to a maximum of £31,380 p.a.

Clearly individuals with larger pension promises enjoy less protection in this regard.

The PPF’s existence is comforting for pension scheme members, although the lifeboat does have its leaks. Firstly, it should be noted that public sector pensions, such as National Health Service or teacher’s pensions, are not covered. Also, ancillary benefits such as a spouse’s benefits and children’s pensions may be far less generous than the original scheme.

The PPF also offers limited protection from inflation, especially where benefits were originally accrued prior to 1997.

So with the UK Chancellors announcement in this March´s Budget that he is proposing that from April 2015 Final salary and Government pensions will not be able to be transferred to a QROPS or cashed in , if you are the member of a scheme that is in deficit or you just wish to protect your spouse/ beneficiaries in the event of your death now is the time to be seriously looking at transferring to a QROPS. Living in Spain I DON’T need a funeral plan! These are the thoughts of the vast majority of UK citizens who live more than four weeks a year here in Spain. Unfortunately, the reality is quite different. Tens of thousands of people who are ‘Living La Dolce Vita’ have planned for life’s final event. Why? I hear you ask – let me explain: Spanish Customs: Funerals here in Spain generally take place within 24 hours, quite different from back home in the UK. This creates complications for many reasons, one of which is: how are my family and friends going to get here to pay their respects?

Finances: Funerals can cost in excess of 4,500€ and usually have to be paid in full prior to the service going ahead. Accessing such a large amount of money quickly can be problematic.

Inflation: Prices of funerals, like everything else, are rising. The latest figure is an average of around 8% - this is considerably higher than almost any savings scheme.

Age or Health: There are insurance policies that do not cover people over a certain age or with particular health issues.

Stress: At such a painful and distressing time people would rather spare their loved ones the potential complications of arranging a funeral

in another country. Language difficulties and different procedures from the UK can create additional worries.

Final wishes: Many people have specific requests for when the inevitable happens. How can they be sure that their wishes will be carried out?

People who have already purchased a funeral plan find that these issues are no longer a factor. They now have complete peace of mind as everything is in place. Families and loved ones will only need to pay their respects.

Some plans fix the costs at the outset. This means there will be nothing extra for the family to pay in the future. This will also protect against future price rises and actually save the estate money the longer the person lives.

Funeral plans are generally available to everybody irrespective of health and age. No declarations or age checks will be required.

Usually the companies that offer plans have procedures: ‘one telephone call’ and they deal with everything. Some even cover their members in both the UK and here in Spain.

So in summary those that believe funeral plans are not for them may wish to reconsider and find out for certain.

The differences are stimulated by the landscaping of the land, the local microclimates and soils, whether the garden is still under development or several centuries old and the academic research programme underway.

Tours in English are now available at the Valencia Botanic Garden led by knowledgeable botanists such as Dra. Olga Mayoral Garcia-Belanga, known by many members of Avinenca. Regular tours are on Mondays commencing 12 noon and 2.30pm and on Thursdays commencing at 3pm. There is no need to pre-book and tickets at the ticket office are 5€: each tour lasts 90 minutes.

Private foundation gardens: include the L’Abarda garden of the Fundem Foundation inland from Javea near Pedreguer which is well worth a Spring visit. Visit the Fundem website for latest information.

Other spectacular gardens worth Spring visits: include the Alhambra gardens in Granada, the Marnes Iris Garden in the mountains above Benissa off the N332 in Alicante Province plus the patio gardens open in Cordoba during the May Patio Festival. Then in the short term there will be for Costa Blanca readers a demonstration garden at the Homes Gardens and Lifestyle Show that will take place next week on the 3rd and 4th April at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe.

SOWING SPRING SEEDS With the weather becoming warmer and the ground now damp it is timely to prepare seed beds and start to sow spring and summer crops to replace the over wintered crops that are being harvested.

The beneficial vitamins and minerals etc., of a wide range of vegetables are described in the book ‘Living Well From Your Garden – Mediterranean Style’.

This is an issue I will discuss at the Calpe Homes Gardens and Lifestyle Show 3rd and 4th April. I will be at stand number 66.

US TV Channel 20th Century Fox has a new show in the can that will go out over there on May 27th and, in my opinion it is the biggest spoof ever. But the question is … who is being spoofed? … The contestants, or us, the long suffering viewers.

The programme´s called ´Who Wants to Marry Harry?´ and features 12 American lassies trying to win the hand of Harry …

Prince Harry that is! Yes, you will see the 12 girls living with ´Prince Harry´ in a posh gaff called Englefield House in Berkshire, but they will in fact be vying for the hand of Matthew Hicks, your everyday average bloke, who has been made to look like the flame-haired royal and has the job of pulling the wool over the girls’ eyes for the entire series ... Yes!! not for just a night! … The entire series! And it’s this that makes me ´beggar the question´ … who is being spoofed round here?

Are all 12 of these American girls completely insane to think that they have a shot with an English Royal, or are they the ones doing the spoofing and are just like all these reality show individuals with an eye on the prize of being on global TV. ZigZag Productions, who have made the show are reeling us in by saying, “our ´Prince’ won’t be revealing he’s actually an ordinary Joe until the very end of the show, after which they suggested, “Will he be able to convince them he’s regal, and if he does, will they fall for the crown or fall in love with the real him? Oh dear … how terribly American!

Celebrity Clips TWO YEARS ago ´The Walking Dead´ went out on Ch5 and is still going strong with series 3 closing out last September. Like all shows that hang in there, some sort of major promo comes out and you might be interested to find out that the show now has its very own perfume. Produced by a PH.D. Chemist it’s called ´Eau de Death´ and will delight with its wondrous whiff of rotten eggs and boiled cabbage!

We now go to a TV company in Holland who´ve produced a ground breaking show called ´Adam and Eve´ about couples dating. Ground breaking because all the contestants will all be naked! The contestants are taken by boat (naked!) to a tropical island where they swim ashore (naked!), looking to find love (naked!). They go ashore on different sides of the island and are left to wander into one another … naked? … of course!.

Harrison Ford is now 71 years old there are all sorts of rumours about their being a new Indiana Jones, and Bradley Cooper the latest to be tagged with the role. US ragmag Latino Review printed the rather unpleasant “Harrison might not be fit enough to pick up his whip and fedora soon, let’s be realistic, he is not the box office draw he once was, and he is only getting older.” Shock horror!

Headline to this story reads; ´Miranda Hart is a bit like Marmite – you either love her or hate her´ … I´m happy with that … She´s here as she started filming a movie last Monday alongside Jude Law, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne and Jason Statham. The director is Paul Feig, (he of ´Bridesmaids´) who said, “I am so excited to bring her to the big screen, and I’m also hoping I’ll finally get back that lawnmower I loaned her last summer!” … now that’s funny!

Fill A Heart With Hope

By Keith Nicol AS NEWS of an earthquake followed by a small or medium magnitude Tsunami came from Chile, Torrevieja Costa Lions also reminded us of the devastation in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan last November and that the massive relief effort is expected to carry on for years.

But out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind for lots of people. The Torrevieja Costa Lions Clubs are continuing to help rebuild the Philippines and are being helped themselves by award winning local singer and songwriter Shani Ormistonm who has written a song especially about the disaster experienced by these poor people that need solidarity, with the collaboration of the music producer Manuel Ortega.

Torrevieja Costa Lions Club have already raised 8.000 euros for the worldwide campaign of LCI, is supporting this project and there are many Lions Clubs in the Philippines lending aid and support. The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club intend to continue their support while still supporting

many local projects.

Shani said “I’m very excited to tell you about my new project where you can take part in it too. The devastation in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan last November has dropped out of the headlines, but the massive relief effort is expected to carry on for years. Many people are without shelter, food or basic necessities.

Galileo is simply ‘magnifico’ THEATRE ON the Costa Blanca went into orbit with the visit of veteran actor Tim Hardy as he held an audience spellbound with his hit one man show The Trials of Galileo.

By Jack Troughton The scientist took on the Italian establishment and lost by proving the planets moved round the sun, falling out with the Roman Catholic Church and its doggedly held view – for the common man at least – that the earth was the centre of the universe. As a result Galileo was found guilty of heresy in 1616 and under house arrest following a fixed trial at the behest of the Pope.

He sensibly signed a confession recanting his findings and escaped torture on the rack, also avoiding the fate of a Franciscan monk who earlier promoted the same view and was burnt at the stake.

Written and directed by Nic Young, Javea Players must be congratulated for this new venture, importing professional theatre for a show at the group’s studio theatre.

MAGIC And so for around 75 minutes Mr Hardy, who trained at RADA and has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, stood centre stage and performed theatrical magic.

He has directed and performed across the world and taken roles in numerous musicals, operas, and films, as well as on UK television, where he is also in demand as a successful narrator – thus the silken tones.

The success of the show is its language – these might be complicated historical matters but the script wonderfully and

The walk from Javea Park in the Arenal to the port and back attracted a good turnout and walkers enjoyed “wonderful weather” as they paraded along the coast with a police escort. The money was raised by supporters buying a Blue Ribbon, tombola, and donations and Deputy Mayor Oscar Anton and a number of healthcare experts manned stalls at Javea Park to make professional healthcare advice available.

IN PHYSICAL mediumship it is possible to receive actual gifts from the Spirit World. These are known as apports, and such gifts from another dimension can be from a wide range of objects. There is one tale of an apport that I shall never ever forget, and I want to share it with you.

A dear friend of mine lost his sister because she was raped and brutally murdered by her boyfriend of the time. This crazy murderer had a penchant for women who drove minis, and she unfortunately did. He specialised in strangling his victims with their own tights or stockings and they were always killed inside their car.

Luckily this guy was caught and jailed, but with remission of sentence he was paroled, only to return to his haunting homeground in Essex. My friend passed him in the street one day, and though nothing was said between them, just the grin on the murderer’s face was enough to upset him for the sad and brutal loss of his dear sister, Anita.

My friend came to stay with me here in Spain, and I knew that

the anniversary of Anita’s death was imminent; and I was glad that we were together to celebrate her life rather than grieve for her passing. The dreaded day came and I tired to make it as easy as possible organising everything down to the last minute.

However it was when I was pegging the washing onto the line that I spotted, and put out to dry from the laundry basket, a frilly white ladies handkerchief with the pink initial, “A”. Thinking nothing of this, and suspecting it belonged to my friend, I said nothing. However he noticed it and asked me who it belonged to. I felt the shiver running down my spine that I have felt now for so many years….. it was sent from Spirit by Anita for him.

We went out to the beach that day and returned late as the sun was going down. I went up to the naya to take in the washing. Pondering on whether I should pass the dry handkerchief to my friend, I was shocked to see just a space where the handkerchief had been between two sheets….. it had gone, and Anita had spoken silently to her living brother passing on a message of survival by apport.

Family Dental Centre opens! the Family Medical Centre Albir recently opened its doors to dental patients. Since opening the Family Medical Centre in 2011, clinic directors Amanda Collins and Dawn Blythe have had aspirations to expand the medical centre to include a Family Dentist.

By Jack Troughton SINGLE PARENT support group Guardian Angels was given an 800€ boost from the proceeds of the annual Spring Fair at the Inn on the Green, Javea.

The charity also raised funds with its own stall and a raffle and auction, but was delighted to be picked as beneficiary of the fair.

Stalls were sold out weeks in

advance for the event organised by the inn on the green and its neighbour High Street Heaven – so the fair was destined to be a success.

Guardian Angels’ Gill Somers said: “We were extremely pleased to be nominated as the charity to benefit from this year’s spring Fair and were very grateful to Jini at Inn on the green and Nicola at High Street Heaven for

organising the day.

“The weather was fine and encouraged people to turn out in force to support us. The money raised will help us to continue our work supporting single parents and their families.”

And Javea’s Original Shop and library is supporting the campaign – tickets for its Easter Raffle are now on sale at 3€ for five. The draw is on Easter Saturday, 19th April.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Adjectives describing people WELL HAVING spent some time talking about adjectives and how they agree with nouns, it would perhaps be nice learn a few more of them.

So here are some more adjectives that generally describe people.

Alto - tall Bajo - short Gordo - fat Delgado - thin Guapo/guapa - handsome/pretty Feo - ugly Listo - clever Tonto - silly Simpático - nice Antipático - not nice Cariñoso - affectionate Sincero - honest Viejo - old Joven - young Mayor - elderly Tranquilo - calm Tímido - shy Abierto outgoing Gracioso - funny Serio - serious Remember that those which end in “o” will change to “a” in the feminine, and they will all take “s” for plural. Something that is very interesting, but rather difficult to explain, is that adjectives that describe people contain all sorts of cultural nuances and personality types which mean that they are not absolutely identical in meaning. Take for example the last word in the

list “serio” which translates as “serious”. This word also contains the idea of reliability and trustworthiness. I remember once slightly taking offence at someone who said that the English were “serios” and started to insist that we did in fact have a sense of humour, until it was explained to me that this was a compliment meaning that the English were reliable and trustworthy!

My favourite adjective is “antipático”. It is a word that doesn’t exist in English but perfectly describes certain individuals. Be careful with its opposite “simpatico”. It does not mean “sympathetic” but “nice”, which isn’t quite the same thing. The word “mayor” has a range of meanings including “greater”, “elder” and what we would call “over the age of consent”. When describing a person though, it is simply a more polite way of saying “old”.

Another tricky, but interesting, point is to realize that these adjectives alter slightly in meaning in a sentence depending on which verb “to be” is used with them – either “ser” or

“estar”. Without complicating life too much – I’ll try and illustrate this with the word “tranquilo”.

If I say of a person “es tranquilo” I mean he is a calm person, that is, he has a calm personality.

However, if I say “está tranquilo” I am not describing a personality, but just how someone is at the moment – he is in a quiet state of mind right now. Here’s another example: you may say of a woman “es guapa” she is pretty. However, if someone just happens to be looking good one day you can say “está guapa”. We would in fact say in English “she’s looking good” that is, on this particular occasion.

As you may imagine there are lots of details and finer points here. If you find it too complicated to understand then don’t worry about it for now, put it on the backburner for later on in your studies. However, if you can grasp this point about the use of adjectives with “ser” and “estar” you will find that it opens up all sorts of interesting new ideas and ways of saying things!

Friendship Tea with AFA

Enjoying their steaming cuppas and sticky buns were Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillors for Citizen Participation, Agustina Esteve, of Social Welfare, Tomás Ballester, and ONG’s, Mamen Mateo.

The event took place at the headquarters of the Association of Relatives and Friends Alzheimer (AFA Torrevieja), located in Station Avenue, No. 1, with the traditional Friendship Tea Party organized jointly by local NGOs’s, AFA Torrevieja and New Fraternity.

Agustina Esteve said, “The ‘Friendship Tea’ is an initiative of the Department of Citizenship of the City of Torrevieja, which has been carried on throughout the year on several occasions, and aims to encourage and promote camaraderie among the many existing partnerships in the locality. At the Friendship Tea Party, representatives of different associations had the opportunity to have a quiet chat sharing their projects and initiatives.

Heads up for Footlights

By Jack Troughton CALPE-BASED THEATRE group Footlights is looking for new faces as it starts rehearsals for its November production of the hit British musical ‘Half a Sixpence’. Originally written as a vehicle for Tommy Steele in 1963, it includes a number of well known songs, including the title number, ‘Flash Bang Wallop’, ‘Money to Burn’, and a ‘Proper Gentleman’.

However, Footlights is keen to find new talent for both the main group and the youth section as members retire and others head off to college – there are large numbers of performers needed for the show.

Half a Sixpence is directed by Sue Burgess, Aileen Lightfoot is musical director and Giovanna Wallis is choreographer. Anyone interested in joining Footlights can call Sue on 96 558 1543. Programs Scam? keep crashing

HELLO AUNTY: Recently I have received a number of calls from people claiming to be at a Microsoft technical centre and that they had observed problems with my ‘Windows computer’ which they could resolve. One I let get as far as asking me to switch on the computer before I hung up but others I have always cut off before they got that far.

This morning I decided to see if I could get any information from a caller and said that I was busy and would ring back later. The woman then told me that her number was 0044 141 6288227 and that she was in Glasgow.

I understand that such calls are probably from scammers and am content to ignore them but others may be taken in and give away sensitive information. Therefore we should do what we can to stop the scammers.

HI AUNTY: Could you please help? I have recently purchased a new Dell Optiplex 3010 desk top computer with Windows 8 operating system and the official Office Home & Student 2013 installed. All appeared to operate okay until I installed my existing Epson Stylus SX425W series printer.

I downloaded the drivers for this printer/Windows 8 from the official Epson website, now when I open word the Word & Excel programs crash. Could this be caused by my printer? Any ideas or do I require a new printer? This printer is only 18 months old and works okay on my Vista laptop. Keep up the good work. Regards, Geoff.

Aunty says: It appears you are not the only one with problems with this Epsom printer and Windows 8 crashing Office programmes.

Many people complaining that the driver V6.72 for this printer for Windows 8 is not ideal. I assume you have installed the correct version of the driver for your PC – i.e. the correct 32 or 64 bit version for your version of W8? One workaround may be to use the Windows 7 driver, and make sure you install that version using the compatibility mode options: Download scanner driver and software for Windows 7 from the Epsom site a) Right-click on the driver executable/installer file. b) Click on Properties and select the Compatibility tab. c) Click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows 7 in the list-down box. d) Then try installing the device driver via Run as administrator.

Reply: Thanks Aunty for your help. The problem with my Epson SX425W printer drivers causing my official Office Home & Student 2013 to crash is the same with Windows 7 & 8. I have downloaded the latest 64bit drivers from the Epson website. I have also since spoken to a local IT company: they said the same as you. Epson have a major problem with this printer, they said avoid it like the plague. When I contacted Epsom they were not interested - I believe that I would have been better talking to the wall. Now looking for a new printer: it will not be an EPSON!

Aunty says: This same issue seems to come around every few months, and is resurfacing again, given the amount of people who have mentioned this in the last few weeks. Suffice to say it is a scam: Microsoft would NEVER contact you by telephone. Any ‘problems’ Microsoft would have would affect many people, and so a mass ‘Patch’ would be issues to Windows. They would not call each individual up to talk them through the process.

Gadget Inspector Investigates:

Logitech Z120 Stereo Speakers THIS WEEK the Inspector takes a look at the Logitech Z120 Stereo Speakers.

We all like to listen to the odd tune whilst working away at the PC/Laptop coalface, but how often are the built-in/ supplied speakers just too weak and tinny? And if they´re external speakers will also probably resemble house bricks with cables trailing all over the desk to boot.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a compact pair of speakers that plug into the computer with one lead for the sound and another for the power, and no need to be concerned with batteries or finding a mains plug?

Well fear not, Logitech have the solution in the Z120 Stereo Speakers. First, they’re compact, each speaker measuring in at 8.5 x 8.5 x 11cm and weighing a paltry 340g – no house bricks here. There will be no connection issues either – two 1.2m cables come from the right hand speaker and have a standard 3.5mm audio plug to connect to the PC output and a full size USB plug for an available USB port. Another 70cm cable joins the left and right speaker.

Once the audio and USB cable are connected to the PC/Laptop you’re ready to go! Just turn on the

speakers and adjust the volume via the controls fitted to the right hand speaker and whatever you’re playing on the PC will be reproduced with a surprisingly clear and crisp sound.

Don´t expect earth shattering levels of volume though, these are not supposed to be deafening – but they will be a considerable improvement in levels and quality to what is built into a laptop.

And don’t forget the Logitech Z120 Stereo Speakers are flexible too – if you have any other device with a standard 3.5mm audio jack and an available full size USB port to provide power you can enjoy your music with these handy little speakers.

Focus on Golf Warm-up Part 2 Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio

- This time it’s personal!

IN LAST week’s edition we had some advice Head 2 Head from Campbell regarding a simple warm-up exercise and it was very well received.

IT ALSO included an invitation to offer similar tips to your fellow golfers. Amongst the feedback were a number of suggestions and requests for a more detailed routine which would target arms, wrists and hands in addition to the waist .

So this week we are adding to that with more detailed suggestions from a local PGA professional and Academy Director - Dino Ferrer. Dino is currently very busy with the academy at La Sella and that is where I caught-up with him.

Tony M - Last week we featured a very simple warm-up routine which was recommended by Campbell. For those wishing to extend that what would you suggest?

Dino - We have to accept the fact that no one is going to apply the same dedication that players like Tiger Woods undertakes. If he has an early tee time (around 8:00) he will rise at 4am and spend two hours working out and a further two hours putting and chipping. But there are some simple exercises which will enhance our fitness and improve our game.

Tony M - Well I agree that very few would follow the Tiger example so what would you suggest?

Dino – Off the golf course, working with weights can be beneficial and these do not have to be very heavy merely something that demands extra effort after a few repetitions. Also using strong elastic bands to create resistance is another easy way of improving our regime. I would also recommend cycling even if only for 20 minutes three times a week. This can all add-up. So to be specific if you have some small weights or a reasonable length of elastic you can try to replicate your

Dino Ferrer golf swing whilst holding the weights or employing the elastic. But please always check with a doctor before starting any conditioning programme.

Tony M - So these could be items you could leave in your golf bag and use for a few minutes before each round.

Dino - Yes of course but I would suggest that the maximum benefit can be gained by doing these on a daily basis. I would also suggest that prior to each round you spend a few minutes doing some rotation exercises. Start doing big, medium and small circles with the arms, to warm up the shoulders and then rotate them clockwise for a minute and then anticlockwise. Then move down to your

wrists and repeat the same sequence. I have seen these best explained by an American baseball pitcher called Tom House.

Tony M - Baseball?

Dino - Yes and if you can imagine how flexible and strong the pitchers arms have to be in order to create that accurate pitch then it does make a lot of sense that these routines can equally benefit a golfer. Campbell- The MASTERS is only a couple of weeks away and so once again all golf eyes will be focussed on Augusta.

Tony M - And once again will you be offering a prize if you can forecast the result.

Campbell - Yes. All you have to do is choose four players and then place a ‘virtual’ wager on each one. You have 100 points to bet and the only limitation is that you can place no more than 50 of them on any one player. Then on the first day of the event we will consult the odds provided by William Hill and apply them to the players making up the top five in the event. The winner of our competition will be whoever has amassed the most points from their wagers.

Tony M - That sounds easy so here are my choices Ian Poulter - 30 points Sergio - 20 points Miguel Angel Cabrera - 10 points Patrick Reed - 40 points Campbell - I don’t understand that.

Tony M - What are you struggling with?
