THE NUMBER of unemployed in Cartagena fell in June by nearly 900 people, 896 to be exact, a fact that shows that; “we are moving out of the crisis and into job creation” according to Cartagena Mayor, Pilar Barreiro. The mayor claims that the fall in nearly 900 unemployed shows that recovery in the region is strengthening. With these figures, Cartagena leads in the drop in unemployment. Throughout the region, 6 out of 10 people who left unemployment, did so in Cartagena. Barreiro believes that these results neither reflect a consolidated change in the labour market reforms promoted by the Government. The mayor pointed out that although it is true that June is usually good for employment figures due to the start of the summer season and temporary seasonal contracts, it is also true that this June was much better because there have been more than 2,100 contracts resulting in 251 fewer unemployed last month. Pilar Barreiro reiterated that “it is essential to
study the trends in the labour market to assess and understand that the overall trend in Spain and especially in Cartagena, is good. Today there are 2,200 Cartagena residents back in work from less than a year ago. That figure represents an annual decrease of 10.4% , well above the national average of 6.6%.” One of the most positive signs of the statistics is that the number of young people unemployed now shows the best results since 2008. The encouraging figures show a drop of 160 people, bringing the number of youth that are no longer unemployed to a total of 256 since January, 2014. The latest data from the Social Security Department confirm this trend. Last month with figures, in May, ended with 1,150 members in general and 193 new autonomous regime. Overall, in the Region of Murcia unemployed fell last June, by 1.09 per cent to 137,412 people. In the case of the municipality of Murcia, the decline in the number of unemployed was 1.8% compared to the previous month, reaching 41,312 unemployed. Continued on page 8
