Tourist spending increases

by Keith Nicol SPENDING BY foreign tourists visiting the region of Murcia increased during the first three months of the year by 23.3% over the same period of 2013, reaching 120.8 million euros.

According to the survey of tourist spending (Egatur) the

Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, Murcia is the fifth region with the greatest percentage increase in tourist spending in Spain. Foreign tourists who visited Spain between January and March spent a record of 10,066 million Euros, representing an increase of 8.1% over the same period of 2013. Germany, the Nordic countries and the UK were the

primary source markets that contributed to this increase.

In Spain, the average daily expenditure per tourist increased by 2.5% to 113â‚Ź, while in Murcia this rose 3.7% to 84.02â‚Ź however the average period for overnight accommodation was reduced by 1.7% .

Emergency Department serves more than six thousand

by Keith Nicol THE ACCIDENT and Emergency Department of Torrevieja’s Hospital and Clinics treated a total of 6,290 incidents over the ten days of Semana Santa.

During Easter the Department specially prepares itself to serve the hundreds of thousands of visitors who flock this area during this time of year, mainly to the coastal towns of Guardamar, Pilar de la Horadada, Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja.

The Emergency Department of Torrevieja made an assessment of the activities carried out during Easter, which saw 62% of emergency department cases treated at health centres. From 11th to 21st April, the Emergency department served a total of 6,290 cases.

Most of the cases that come to the ER requiring admission are those that have difficulty breathing and are suffering and chest pain. This usually does not lead to hospitalization. After breathing issues comes abdominal pain. The average waiting time for treatment at the Department was 21 minutes.

The Department of Health in Torrevieja has six health centres providing continuous 24-hour care and hospital emergency points with 24-hour services. The services consist of a team of doctors such as specialists in Intensive Care, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine and Anaesthesia. In addition, also as part of the 24-hour operation are and professionals in Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, ENT, Radiology, Urology and Haematology.

The Continuing Care Department advises suffers to visit health centres rather than the Hospital for treatment of mild to moderate problems and it is recommended to use the Hospital to more serious matters. It is the aim of Torrevieja’s Department of Health is that patients always have the information needed to go to the nearest point of care with less waiting time, thus obtaining faster and optimal care for each case .

To find out which centre is offering the fastest service in case of emergency, this can be obtained by sending an SMS with the word “ER” to 215013.

Alicante Mayor has second daughter ALICANTE MAYOR Sonia Castedo gave birth to her second daughter, Carla, on Tuesday but vows to return to work as soon as possible and says she will take her daughter to the office with her as she “cannot afford to be away from work for four months.” Castedo intimated that she might have considered leaving frontline politics now that she has two children at home, but decided instead to stay as an affront to her critics. She also said that she and her husband Arturo Soto are determined to have another child as soon as possible.

An inflexible friend

THOUSANDS OF expats face losing their Barclaycard unless they can give Britain’s biggest credit card company a UK address.

An estimated 39,000 customers across Europe who have not used the card in at least six months have received letters saying they could have them withdrawn if they are unable to provide one.

The move has caused a storm of protest from clients – many of whom use a Barclaycard “for emergencies” or foreign holidays and have loyally stayed with Barclaycard for years.

Social media has come alive with angry reaction from people likely to affected – and an article in the personal finance section of the Daily Telegraph triggered 116 comments.

In the past two weeks letters from the credit card company’s Scott Miller, Barclaycard’s Head of UK Operations have been dropping on doormats saying accounts will be closed in June because they were unable to provide ‘a service’ for non-UK residents.

However, Barclaycard has said overseas customers who do not frequently use their account can keep them open by providing a UK address.

Don Hargreaves, from Senija, alerted RTN to the problem after receiving the bad news from the credit card company.

“I have had a Barclaycard for as long as I can remember.

“I largely use it as a credit card on the internet, it is very

convenient – you have a record of what you have spent and Barclaycard gives customers a guarantee.

“It will certainly make things more complicated. I will miss it and I will have to find and research an alternative to get a similar service.”

Margaret Hales MBE, a member of the Pensioners for Justice team, said she no longer used Barclaycard but knew that “a great number of Brits who live in Spain do.”

Margaret, from Benitachell, added: “This is yet another example of services available to the British population being taken away from us because we legitimately live in Spain, or France, or anywhere within the European Union.

“There are all sorts of little occasions when we have difficulties. For example, completing questionnaires (they need a UK postcode) and similarly for registration for some of the online newspapers. Perhaps they think that we will just go away....cut off, penniless and without the vote!

“However, I detect that there is a growing feeling among the great British public here in Spain that this just will not do and more and more are campaigning, writing to their bank, their MP, the Prime Minister even. It’s now so easy with email!”

One online comment described Barclaycard as “penny wise and pound foolish” for its action, while another said “Somebody really ought to tell Barclaycard that Britain has joined the EU”.

Graham Richards, a Pensioners for Justice campaigner living in France, said many Barclaycard customers had made their feelings known on the expat forum www.survivefrance.com He said a “major worry” was how having a card withdrawn would affect credit ratings – Barclaycard has since said it would have no effect.

But Graham said: “My attitude is that if Barclaycard does not want me, then I don’t want it – I still have another card.”

And Brian Langston said he was “flabbergasted” to receive the Barclaycard letter. “Although I don’t use it too much these days, I still keep a Barclaycard for those unexpected emergencies and simple peace of mind.”

Managing Director of Barclaycard UK, Manoj Piplani said: “We periodically review accounts both in the UK and internationally, and if we become aware that a customer hasn’t used their account for more than six months, we’ll close their UK Barclaycard account, after giving them time to make alternative arrangements.

“To minimise inconvenience, we are only closing accounts that have not been used at all for more than six months. The vast majority have been inactive for over three years.”

He said the card could be used in most countries around the world but terms and conditions made it clear customers should have a valid UK address.

“Although we can support overseas addresses on a temporary basis, our accounts are not designed to be registered to permanent overseas addresses. Customers who do not use their accounts, but would like to keep them open, can do so by providing us a UK contact address for the account.”

BUREAUCRATS ARE investigating the problems of cross border taxation believed to be preventing a true freedom of movement within the European Union.

by Jack Troughton THE EUROPEAN Commission has launched a series of initiatives aimed at removing the tax obstacles that “hinder the ability of individuals to move within the single market of the EU”.

And it has invited public consultation in two areas – firstly, tax issues faced by EU citizens when they actively move between member states; and secondly, looking at the problems caused by Inheritance Tax issues.

In addition, professionals will be consulted in an “expert group” to gather ideas centred

on dealing with taxation barriers that get in the way of cross-border activity.

It is planned that the feedback will help the Commission examine solutions to problems highlighted during the process.

The consultation process will end on 3rd July this year.

The expert group will examine a number of issues, including taxation obstacles to free movement; personal income tax and inheritance tax – and possible other areas such as vehicle taxation and e-commerce where it impacts on individuals; tax declarations in more than one state; double taxation trea-

ties; working in other EU countries; investing in other member states.

Neo-Nazi march blocked Maria del Carmen Garcia clemency rejected again MORE THAN 2,000 people have blocked a march of one hundred representatives of the right-wing National Democratic Party (NPD) in Berlin. The approved march was to take place along an agreed route through the streets of Kreuzberg in the city but hordes of young local residents sat in the streets, preventing the march from taking place. Several people were arrested.

BENEJÚZAR WOMAN María del Carmen García walked into a bar and doused 69-year-old Antonio Cosme Velasco Soriano with petrol before setting him alight in July 2005. He was convicted of raping Carmen Garcia’s 13-year-old daughter in 1998 and was serving a nine year sentence but had been released from prison on a 3-day pass when he was attacked after taunting Carmen Garcia in the street outside with the remark, “How’s your daughter?” He died of his injuries a few days later. Now she

says she is prepared to serve a prison sentence for her crime but insists she is not a murderer and just wants her ordeal to be over.

The Court of Alicante has rejected two clemency postponements despite receiving a support petition of nearly 13,000 signatures.

She was sentenced in July 2009 to 5.5 years’ imprisonment, the term having already been reduced from 9.5 years on grounds of ‘temporary insanity’. Her lawyer is still considering the possibility of filing a third petition for clemency.

Culture and entertainment for everyone on Museum Night

by Keith Nicol THE EVER popular Museum Night returns to Cartagena on Saturday 17th May. The fun event offers over a hundred activities of all kinds, such as dance, circus and concerts. 18 museums open their doors free of charge and restaurants, hotels and galleries put on their best clothes to welcome the thousands of attendees. There are a total of 106 activities of all kinds, for all ages, running from 10.00am Saturday until two in the morning, Sunday.

The 18 museums that make up the city open their doors for free, except the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQUA) that is closed. Dancing is one of the highlights of the agenda. A new feature is the Zumba Night in the Plaza Juan XXIII from 10.30pm. The night also includes Salsa, meringue and samba ‘till midnight. There are up to thirty concerts of all kinds including a return to the 50’s with the rock and roll of that era by Cool Rocking Combo.

At midnight, the DJs Juanje Lopez and Sergio Pujol invade the Plaza del Rey with Dancing in Words. These musicians tell a story of the city with their rhythms and lyrics.

The jazz of the 30 and 40s play in the Museum of the Civil War while the Aegium Jazz Trio perform five performances that take place from 10.00pm until midnight. The Plaza San Francisco is one of the centre points for Museum Night with music by the Liverpool band playing the emblematic songs of the Beatles.

Alzheimer’s Mar Menor Association AMMA IS a group of carers with family suffering from Alzheimers and Dementia, setting up an Association in San Pedro del Pinater. They are promised a place in San Pedro del Pinater for a Day Care Centre for English-speaking and Spanish sufferers of these and other debilitating illnesses. The fan’s season ticket has been revoked and his access to El Madrigal Stadium permanently banned. Following the Club’s actions police arrested 26-year-old David Campayo Lleo at around 7pm on Tuesday evening, charging him with ‘an offence against fundamental rights and public freedoms’ under Article 510 of the Spanish Penal Code.

The Post Office in the UK has published

a survey on ‘last minute’ cash transactions revealing that an incredible £21 million is being ‘lost’ in exchange fees at airports – with the most exchanges taking place from Pounds Sterling to Euros, followed by US Dollars.

Travellers leaving their currency exchange until the eleventh hour miss out on millions of holiday dosh by

succumbing to poor exchange rates at airports. Bristol, Birmingham and Newcastle are named as the airports charging the highest rates.

A sample conversion of £268 for Euros shows a loss of £12.56 compared to the amount achievable from high street cash vendors – the price of a delicious Costa Menu del Dia!

Ryanair drops out of favour…

RYANAIR IS suffering a serious lack of popularity nowadays in the budget airline stakes. A recent opinion poll of frequent fliers held in the UK shows that Ryanair has lost its top spot as the world’s foremost ‘no frills’ carrier.

Dentures missing on the M-30 A MIDDLE-AGED man of South American origin on a motor scooter stopped at the side of the M-30 orbital in Madrid on Saturday morning after he sneezed and lost his false teeth.

The M-30 is a busy 32.5km ring road encircling the capital. When police arrived at the scene at 10am they insisted the man move on without his dentures as they said it would be too dangerous for him to conduct a detailed search. It is not known whether the man was eventually reunited with his teeth.

Guests in our country I DON’T often agree with British Prime Minister David Cameron but I did the other day when he was reported as saying that Great Britain should be known as a ‘Christian Country’ and to be proud of this title.

Then out come all the do-gooders condemning him for ‘making such a destabilizing statement as it will offend other religions in the country’.

In my eyes I think there is only one that these do-gooders should defer to. Our Queen is the head of the Christian Church of England and her presence makes a fantastic statement to the world that we are Christians and proud to be, and that Great Britain is a ‘Christian Country’.

We are a very accommodating people and all

these religions and foreign immigrants should remember they are only guests in our country and we should be offended when they try to change our British traditions.

Remember that we fought two world wars to keep our traditions and freedom of speech. We only have to look at what is happening in the Midlands now with the aptly named ‘Trojan Horse’- the usual people causing problems, intimidating Christian students in Church of England schools.

By the way I am an atheist but I live by the Christian values taught to me and I am proud to be British.

Doing my You can do bit to try better than this and help Spain IS IT just me, or is it no wonder Spain is a financial basket case? I recently had a C & G deposit bond mature in UK and was duly sent a cheque for £20,000.

I thought I would do my bit to try and help my adopted country by paying it into my bank account here in Spain.

At the desk of my local bank I was informed that it would cost me 120€ to pay this cheque into my account. I rejected this offer and duly returned the cheque to England where it was gratefully received into my account with no charge.

I HOPE that this letter is not taken by your readers to be from another ‘whingeing’ Brit in Spain. We’ve written to your excellent newspaper before because we know that you also want a beautiful Benidorm and that you regularly campaign to that end.

We have an apartment on the road leading up to the Benidorm Cross.

We also have the delightful Cala Tio Ximo and Cala Almadraba/Punta del Pinet. Cala Tio Ximo is soon to have a ‘chiringuito’ on the beach for the summer season. No doubt this will bring many more people to enjoy the beauty of the Sierra Helada Natural Park.

However, what will these folk experience when they get here?

Flytipping, rubbish by the ton and dog mess, all deposited in front of the Villa Marina apartments and tipped down the mountain side!

On their walk up to the Cross along Calle Pekin/Tokio, they will need a very strong constitution indeed to negotiate a 100m stretch of road which is absolutely covered in dog faeces. It literally forms a barrier across the road. We challenge anyone not to get the disgusting mess on their feet or to inhale the foul smells emanating from it.

Where are the cleaners from Benidorm Council? A rarity indeed in this part of town! Where are the road repair squads who three years ago laid water pipes across a very beautiful, small traffic island filled with palm trees, lovely shrubs and other flowering plants? That island is still in the state of dis-repair in which it was left: a disgraceful sight.

Come on Benidorm. You can do better than this.

Cat fines

WE TRAVEL to Benidorm five times a year and always feed the stray cats and would do more if we could.

During our last visit in March we got into argument with a Spanish couple.

We were feeding a cat in a derelict house. They started going bonkers and saying “No, no, no, no! We can phone the police to fine you!”

Can you find out if this is true, please?

After speaking with our Spanish friend he said this may happen and you could be fined 120€ for feeding stray animals.

We can’t believe it but don’t want to get into any trouble.

A Sorry Tale

I FELT I must comment on a letter in this week’s RTN, ‘A Sorry Tale’.

This also happened to my husband and I – we had exactly the same experience.

We parked our hire car at 5.30am, making sure it was safely parked between two cars so it could not be hit by anyone. Lo and behold later in the week I noticed £75 charged to our credit card.

My husband spoke to the company and they said the car was damaged but they would investigate the matter.

The following week I emailed a letter to them and threatened to get in touch with the TV programme Watchdog. At the end of that week the money was credited back to us.

I do not believe they would have returned the money without the threat of publicity. It also happened to a friend of ours, which is why I made the threat of getting in touch with Watchdog as I knew that otherwise we would not see the money again.

High volume of traffic expected over the weekend

THE HEAD of the Regional Employment and Training (SEF) department, Alejandro Zamora, said on Tuesday that, “Murcia is the community in which employment has grown most in the last year. It grew by 3.6%, which created 18,200 more jobs in the region.”

by Jack Troughton Zamora stressed that “the fact that we know this is very good news, which shows that the recovery that we are speaking about, is reaching families and is translating into what matters most in this government; which is employment. Since 2007, this is the first time that the unemployment rate

has fallen in the first quarter. This is especially good if you consider that this occurs after the Christmas season, an important time for contracts and, this year, Easter did not take place in the first quarter.”

The director also noted that, “data is positive but not sufficient; the Data gives us hope and encourages us to continue working to generate growth and employment in

the region of Murcia.”

Finally, he added that the EPA data is not an isolated instant, “but confirms a positive trend, as many other indicators also show a growth line. The registered unemployment data, the recruitment, the membership to the Security Social and autonomous, also show better performance than the national average.”

Asturias businessman kidnapped

FIVE PEOPLE have been arrested for the kidnapping of an Asturias businessman. The man was abducted by two men wearing balaclavas armed with a gun. He was bound with duct tape and cable ties and subjected to electric shocks but later released on an undertaking of payment of a significant sum following threats against the victim’s family. Payment was never made as a few days later officers of the Kidnapping and Extortion Section of the Judicial Police were able to identify five people involved in the abduction and arrests followed.

TRAFFIC IS expected to top 5.5 million vehicle trips during the May bank holiday. Following the disappointing number of traffic fatalities over the Easter holidays, the DGT (Trafico) has deployed officers on special shifts to cope with the overload over the holiday, which also coincides with the 2014 Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix in Jerez scheduled for Friday 2nd – Sunday 4th May, projected to generate a further 250,000 vehicles on Spanish roads.

Extra checkpoints have been put in place to spot-check motorists for blood/alcohol levels; there will be stringent checks on seatbelt use, especially for children; and the Guardia’s fleet of Pegasus helicopters are in fine form so motorists are warned to respect public safety laws.

April mist for calendar Top Boxers on the coast

by Jack Troughton SEA MIST drifting into the high rise of Benidorm makes an atmospheric photograph for the 2015 calendar being published by charity Friends of the Children of EMAUS. Tracy Ann took the shot and judges chose the picture to represent April in the calendar believing it portrayed life on the Costa Blanca, the chosen theme to challenge photographers.

She has lived in Benidorm for three years and works with the Blues Brothers Experience, as the show’s photographer and also taking a major role in the management of the act. As well as having a talent for taking pictures, her other hobbies include reading and cooking.

By Keith Nicol TWO WORLDCLASS lightweight boxers have been working out with Spanish Lightweight Champion Emiliano Casal over the last two weeks. Lightweights Ricky Burns and Kevin Mitchell joined Emiliano for a spot of winter training in the warmth of the Mediterranean, under the watchful eye of trainer Tony Sims.

Burns is a former WBO Super-Featherweight champion, Commonwealth super featherweight champion and WBO Lightweight champion. Mitchell is a former British super-featherweight and Commonwealth champion plus WBO Inter-Continental Super Featherweight and Lightweight Champion.

Mitchell has possibly the biggest fight of his life on May 31st, on the under card of the Carl Froch - George Groves fight at Wembley Stadium. Kevin Mitchell will face Ghislain Maduma on the bill with the winner becoming the number one contender for the right to fight for a IBF lightweight title with the winner going on to challenge Miguel Vazquez.

European Day May 9th

FLAGS OF the European Union nations will be flying high next Friday, May 9th, as Torrevieja celebrates European Day.

by Keith Nicol The event takes place in front of the Town Hall and Inmaculada church and starts at 10.00am with music and entertainment from the TKO, 91.9fm, radio roadshow, before handing over to bagpiper Willie Hume at 10.30am.

The main events start with short speeches and words of welcome at around 11.00am followed by the raising of the European flag in the main square by Mayor Eduardo Dolon, with the traditional song for Europe sung by Maria O’Hara and Francisco Moreno.

This year, the association of honour is the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion who celebrated their 25th Anniversary last week, with representatives from other members of Torrevieja’s multicultural population also flying their flags.

This year, visitors have an option of joining in with the entertainment or just sitting back and enjoying the view. First on stage is local Flamenco dancer Sandra Esteve who will not only be showing of the talents of her students in flamenco and Sevillanas but encouraging the audience to get to their feet and see how much fun it

can be for themselves.

They are followed by the very tradition folk sound of Grendels Bane who bring Barn Dancing to European day for the very first time. All four members of Grendels Bane are British and they guarantee a fun half hour of music and dance for everyone that wishes to join in the fun.

The European Day festivities take place from 10.00am until around 2.00pm, seating is available on a first come, first sat basis, and some local associations an charitable groups The will be on hand to supply you with 2013 event information about their activities.

Business Battle for ALPE

By Keith Nicol 150 LAPS in two hours was the order of the day last Saturday, as local Torrevieja and Orihuela businesses fought it out in Go Karts. The event was the II Costa Blanca Business Battle with each team having up to five drivers, who swapped drivers every seven minutes in a two-hour reply race.

The event was a fun day out for local business with all profits from the day going directly to ALPE, Torrevieja’s centre for those with learning disabilities.

Some very competitive racing, plus a few spin outs and some not so sporting NASCAR style nudges were appreciate by the crowds who came to watch the event.

At a special evening banquet, prizes and certificates were awarded to the winning teams.

The Orihuela Policia Local took top spot, closely followed by Los Amigos and Iron Bozy-La Luna with Rune from Iron Boys-La Luna also taking the prize for the fastest lap of 41.9 seconds and Camilia from Heidi Salon winning the Ladies prize.

Antic Auto attracts thousands ANTIC AUTO attracted over ten thousand visitors last weekend to see the display of classic and vintage cars and bikes.

by Keith Nicol MANY TOOK advantage if the pre-ITV check up for their classic cars thanks to the participation of APPLUS ITEUVE, while the only major negative factor was the new 2.00€ parking charge that caught out almost everybody attending the show.

This years display was also smaller than seen for at least a decade, as before the show used to be on at the same time as the Tuning Show, attracting younger custom car and classic car and bike visitors to the IFA. It’s still the largest show of its kind in the Alicante region and a must for anyone that enjoys classic cars, motorbikes, bicycles, antiques, toys, games, magazines, books and auto-memorabilia.

Once again the exhibition was organised with the cooperation of the Vintage Car

Association, ASAL, who gathered together a varied range of exhibitors at the IFA. One of the main attractions of the event will be the presence of iconic vehicles from private collections in Spain with a different displays representing the last ten decades of the motorcar, from the early 1900’s. Not everyone was impressed by the show with one visitor David noting, “I think the show has seen it’s day’ while members of a local car club were hopeful that the event could be revamped and turned around to attract more participation next year.

Classic Car lovers can enjoy another popular event this weekend with the monthly meeting of Ace Café at La Torre Hotel, on Sunday from 11.00am until 1.00pm. Entrance is free for both visitors and those wishing to display their cars or bikes.

Royal British Legion celebrates 25th Anniversary

by Keith Nicol SPAIN’S OLDEST Branch of the Royal British Legion, Torrevieja, celebrated their 25th Anniversary on Thursday, April 24th.

More than 120 members and guests attended the event including Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon and Spain North District Chairman, Nigel Hails.

The festivities took place at the newly renovated Punta Prima Restaurant. Entertainment on the evening was supplied by the tap dancing duo, Touch of Class with their Glenn Millar inspired routine, the youngest crooner in town, 18year old Benny, and dance band Timelees.

Torrevieja Chairman, Mrs Gillian Burden and Nigel Hails gave words of welcome and support along with a reply of thanks from Eduardo Dolon. Torrevieja’s Honorary Secretary David Young also received a special certificate for 35 years service to the Legion.

Chairman Gill Burden said, ‘I want to thank the Torrevieja Town Hall for all their support since the Branch was formed.”

Eduardo Dolon, speaking in English, thanked the RBL for inviting him to the event and said that the Town Hall would continue to support them and their aims.

David Young added, “We would be happy to meet any potential new members or returning members at our normal branch meeting held at the Casa Ventura on the second Friday of the month. We gather at 6.30pm and our meeting begins at 7.00pm, and following the proceedings we have entertainment, a raffle

Beach dance for charity FUNDRAISERS HOPE for a charity coup by inviting everyone to join in the fun of the ‘Dance ‘Til You Drop’ marathon on Javea’s Arenal Beach on Saturday 10th May.

by Jack Troughton Part of the Wear Red Campaign, the event is to raise money for Ambulancia Para Javea which aims to raise 64,000€ to buy a specially designed and adapted ambulance for Javea Red Cross.

The dancing runs between 11am and 1pm and is hosted by the Arenal’s Peca 2 and radio station Total FM.

Star of the dancing will be the mysterious Beach Dancer – currently recognised by Javea Tourist Board and who features on you Tube as ‘Loco de Javea’. People are invited to join in or just watch the action.

And in the evening from 7.30pm, L’Ancora Playa is running ‘Search for a Star’ talent competition to aid the appeal.

By Keith Nicol TO MARK the tenth anniversary of the launch of the Municipal School of Photography, an exhibition is taking place at Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Culture, Luis María Pizana, opened the exhibition on Wednesday evening.

Admission is free and features the talent of students of the Municipal School of Photography, directed by Justo Gil, with the exhibition’s theme focusing on this occasion, on the nude. The exhibition includes the participation of a total of 35 students and will remain open until Sunday 11th May.

With the notable exceptions of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, the Tournament visits Torrevieja for the first time. Host CF Torrevieja face some formidable competition in Group A, kicking off against the formidable Atletico Madrid at 10am in the Nelson Mandela. All 24 qualifying games will be played today,

Friday May 2nd with playoffs for the final spots played on the weekend. Games take place between 10am and 2pm and in the afternoon from 4.30pm through to finish. Navy League signals Easter GLORIOUS COLOURS were the order of the day as the Navy League of the United States Levante Council’s annual Easter Bonnet competition and lunch at Calpe’s Puerto Blanco.

And not to be outdone, Brian Ratcliffe wiped the floor with the competition to win the ‘you-must-be-joking’ prize with an outrageous ‘mop head’ design.

ON THURSDAY 24th April the excellent JB Brass joined forces with the Torrevieja Barbershop Harmonisers to provide a very entertaining evening of music and song at Teatro Municipal Torrevieja. The event promoted by the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club was a huge success with an International audience of hundreds enjoying the band perform under Musical Director Dr Ian K Tinsley, both traditional and modern brass band music including three excellent solo performances from Deborah, Trudie and Jayne.

Lion President Janette Bennett was welcomed on stage where she was delighted to formally thank and congratulate all the participants for a very fine performance, and announced that all profits from the event would be donated to Vecinos de San Miguel Archangel who do such wonderful work to help those most in need in San Miguel de Salinas.

CLIMBING PLANTS provide an important element to Spanish gardens.

They add a third dimension to the design of the garden and colour and perfume as they climb up and over walls, up through trees, cascade down banks and cover trellis or pagodas.

And since most are available all year round in large pots it is not too late to plant and add an extra dimension to this summer’s garden. The table shows some summer favourites that are generally easy to establish.

Tax evaders beware JUST WHEN things seemed to have calmed down on tax avoidance and overseas asset declarations, it rears its ugly head yet again. The UK

Government has published details of its latest plans to ramp up pressure on tax evaders who hide money offshore, which include making it easier to prosecute them, with a prison sentence possible for those found guilty, even if, it is being suggested, they did not intend to evade taxes.

The plans, and an announcement of an intention to launch a consultation on the matter imminently, are contained in an update to an earlier tax evasion crackdown strategy document published last year.

The publication of No Safe Havens 2014 followed the publication, in a number of UK newspapers of remarks made by Chancellor George Osborne during a trip to Washington in which he revealed plans to, as the Financial Times reported, “…change the balance of the law so the burden of proof falls on those who are hiding their money offshore,

and we don’t have to prove they intended to do so…”

As reported, other schemes aimed at going after tax evaders that were announced by the chancellor in his Budget last month – such as the Revenue’s new ability to demand up-front payment of tax it claims it is owed, but which is in dispute, as well as its new power to help itself to money it is owed by dipping into the bank accounts of taxpayers who owe more than £1,000 – have also sparked concern and some criticism.

Phil Berwick, a partner and head of contentious tax at the Irwin Mitchell law firm, was among those critical of the Government’s latest plans for cracking down on offshore tax evaders.

That the Government would no longer be required to prove that someone with undeclared offshore assets had deliberately set out to avoid tax, he said, represented “a fundamental shift in the burden of proof.”

“Not everybody who has failed to declare foreign income has done so

deliberately,” he added.

There is already a maximum penalty of 200% of the tax that has not been paid, in addition to interest and tax for up to 20 years, for taxpayers with undeclared foreign income.

This latest announcement follows on from the news that HMRC will have the power to raid taxpayers’ bank accounts without their consent. HMRC has had a significant amount of data on offshore offenders for a long time, but has failed to pursue criminal investigations. It looks like this may be about to change.

WOUNDS AND injuries caused by a dog attack A FEW weeks ago I was bitten by a dog, whilst in the back of a restaurant here in the Costa Blanca. The restaurant owner says that he is not responsible, since there was a no trespassing sign on that particular area. Legally, can I can ask for compensation ?

In principle and in relation to the damage caused by animals , the article 1905 of the Spanish Civil Code says: “The owner of an animal, or the person who uses it, is liable for damages caused by it, although it escapes or get lost. This responsibility shall only cease in the event that the damage is caused by a force majeure or fault of the person who suffered the damages.“ Therefore, in principle it is owner or possessor of the animal who must take responsibility and compensate for damage caused by it. Such responsibilities are understood as objective, due to the inherent danger coming just from the act of having such an animal.

However, according to article 1905, the owner could waive his liability if the attack is caused by or the fault of the person attacked.

I understand by what you say that the owner thinks you are solely responsible because you went to a restaurant area not open to the public, where there was a no trespassing sign, and therefore he thinks that your negligence absolves or waives his responsibility.

It is essential to determine if you have had or had not any fault in the attack. It could be considered that it is not your fault if the non-trespass sign was not visible,

Sound advice from Meryl who ‘truly nose!’

MERYL STREEP was born in a place called Summit in New Jersey 64 years ago and has enjoyed a spectacular career in acting. She graduated from Yale School of Drama in 1971 and has gone on to win three Academy Awards plus countless others for her work in the cinema and the theatre, with the stand out ones for me being her nine People’s Choice awards between 1984 and 2013.

She was given an honorary doctoral degree at the Indiana University shortly after the Oscars this year and in her rather revealing speech afterwards said: “I was always in plays, but I thought it was vain to be an actress, plus! I thought I was too ugly, glasses weren’t fabulous then!” And followed this with the equally revealing “…many of my friends woke up at three years of age and said, ‘I have to be on stage’ … I never had that.”

Meryl then brought us on a few years adding: “When I was 40, I was offered three witches in one summer, and I thought, ‘Okay, this is it, you turn 40, and oh my God!” She then made reference to the young female actors of today saying “For young women, I would say, don’t worry so much about your weight. Girls spend way too much time thinking about that.” Then with a full head of steam added: “For young women and men too, what makes you different or weird is your strength: everyone tries to look cute when actually the people who look different are the ones who get picked up!” She ended her oratory at Indiana University to rousing applause with the rather amusing “I used to hate my nose, now I don’t! … It’s okay!” Meryl is currently filming ‘Suffragette’, charting the life and times of Emmeline Pankhurst, due for release at the tail end of next year.

THE FIRST episode of Daphne Du Mauriers ‘Jamaica Inn’ aired on the BBC Monday before last, and viewers complained in their droves at glaring inaccuracies such as the misuse of weapons; ploughs not yet invented and hymns that had not yet been written. And not only that, Twitter was inundated with peeps complaining about the awful sound, with folks needing to use subtitles ... Come on Auntie Beeb! … Get your finger out!

THE LATEST in a long line of manic attention seekers is Josie Cunningham, who recently said: “An abortion will further my career,” has gone even more nuts and publically stated she had £4,800 breast implants on the NHS. She is planning the abortion so she can appear on Ch5’s Big Brother. Now do you get what I mean when I bang on about these awful reality shows and their saddo fame seekers?

I JUST love former Dr Who Matt Smiths’ response when asked if he might appear in ‘Sherlock’.

Speaking at the Wizard World Con, he said: “There’s no room for me on Sherlock, they’ve got Benedict and Martin, that’s quite enough peculiar Englishmen for that show.”

Having said that, Sherlock, and Dr Who producer Steven Moffat, has been quoted as saying: “I’d jump at the chance to work with Matt again!”

AROUND ABOUT 20 odd stories have emerged over the last 6 months about a possible ‘Friends’ reunion, and many a time I have been tempted to drop it in on CC. It is here today as, after creators Martha Kaufman and David Crane said it won’t happen, and now Courtney Cox, (Monica) said the same on David Letterman last week, it looks like it’s done folks! Rojales International Day INTERNATIONAL DAY in Rojales is to be held on the Plaza Blanca, Ciudad Quesada on Saturday 10th May. Healing Pablo MY PHYSICAL healing energies came to me first when I was the Headteacher of a Primary School in central London. Those were times when the specific care of children meant that you could not give even a junior aspirin to a child who had a headache.

The procedure demanded that the parents of the sick child be contacted so that they could collect their child and start the healing process, however simplistic were the needs and whatever were the circumstances.

I was called to the sick room to find Pablo, a usually boisterous Spanish eight year old, sweating feverishly and complaining of a headache. His Parents were alerted immediate, but I did something that wouldn’t be allowed these days, but was for me back then a reflex action. I simply placed the back of my hand onto Pablo’s forehead to monitor the depths of the fever…. my need to do so was because he may have needed urgent intervention by the Westminster Children’s Hospital. Pablo was indeed running a temperature, and a helper sat with him when I returned to my office.

Playtime came and I was never quite immune to the background noise of 125 children enjoying a sunny afternoon’s playtime. Suddenly I heard a yell, a familiar yell, and Pablo had scored a goal. I called him up to my office, asked him what he thought that he was doing, told him that his Mother was on her way to collect him and to take him home. His reply shocked me when he told me he was better now. The fever had gone, but the mark of the back of my hand remained on his forehead.

When Mother came I told her the whole story over a cup of tea. Her immediate response was that I had healed her son, and that my hands had connected to bring on his healing. Pablo was sent for, and he said there was no way that he was going home yet, there was a football match after school and he had other goals to score. Pablo’s Mother told me that she believed in healing and that I should take my gift further. She said that if my healing had worked with Pablo that it would work with others.

I found it hard to take in, but she was right, and my healing energies are used daily, as they were first used some thirty years ago on Pablo. I wonder how many goals he has scored since!?

Julia, healing is sent with love and light. This is an instruction sent to the body to enable the healing process, and it allows people to heal themselves. Self healing is something that we can be responsible with, but we are the very best person to set healing in motion, especially since it is our body that has released the symptoms we need to address. Once the healing is sent it works in a positive way with the recipient, and they are energised to the point of accepting the healing energy sent. Why nearly all women experience one episode of thrush in their lifetime

Thrush is the most common cause of vaginal symptoms seen in sexual health clinics.

MOST WOMEN, as many as 75%, will have had an episode of thrush in their lifetime. It is not considered to be a sexually transmitted infection.

Thrush can occur anywhere but most common sites are the mouth and vagina.

Thrush is a yeast infection that lives in the human gut. The most common thrush species is named Candida Albicans. Women carry candida in the vagina. Treatment is only needed if they have symptoms or if they are pregnant.

Pregnant women will need topical treatment only i.e. cream or pessaries, as opposed to oral medication.

The most common symptoms are vulval itching or increased vaginal discharge or both.

These symptoms can also cause discomfort on passing urine.

Men can also experience thrush. This can be because they are sensitive to the Candida Antigen in the yeast of their female partners.

They may develop a penile itch and balanitis (inflamed glans). Men only require treatment if they have symptoms.

Other conditions that appear like Thrush are Excema or Genital Dermatosis.

Thrush can be an indicator of other medical conditions, particularly if you are having regular episodes. Thrush is associated with pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes, immunosuppressive drugs, and antibiotic use.

Treatment is simple and effective and should be prescribed by a health professional.

Treatment can range from a topical cream, vaginal pessary, oral medication or all three!

To minimize the risk of thrush occurring here is some useful advice: Avoid tight or synthetic clothing like tights, leggings, tight jeans Nylon underwear should be avoided.

Cotton underwear is preferable Women should ensure the vagina is lubricated prior to sexual intercourse Women when washing genital area should wash from the front to the back Both men and women should avoid strong perfumed bath and shower products and avoid genital sprays and deodorants If you are concerned that you have Thrush, seek professional health advice.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

First and second persons singular In an earlier article we took a step forward by changing some of our important “first person” verb forms into “second person” verb forms, in other words to talk about “you” as well as “I”.

We have limited ourselves to just six examples so far, because these are ones that give us a chance to building more interesting sentences by combining them with the infinitive or other verbs to express our needs, desire, intentions and obligations: quieres (you want), vas a (you are going to) necesitas (you need), puedes (you can), tienes que (you have to) te gusta (you like).

We can now make statements about the person we are addressing, for example “Vas a aprender mucho español con Jane” (“You’re going to learn a lot of Spanish with Jane” - just thought I’d slip that one in), or “Puedes dormir más tarde” (“You can sleep later” - I’ll leave you to invent your own context for that one). We could also give someone information in the negative, for example “No tienes que volver mañana” (You don’t have to go back (or come back) tomorrow”.)

Perhaps the second person is used most frequently however to form questions. We can think of lots, using the words we have learnt so far. Here are some questions which perhaps you would like to answer yourself. You can send me the answers if you wish. ¿Necesitas tomar medicamentos? ¿Quieres aprender más sobre España? ¿Vas a visitar a tu familia este verano? ¿Tienes que volver a trabajar? ¿Puedes salir esta noche? ¿Te gusta comer verduras?

I think we’ll make a little digression at this point, just in case some of you are confused. The second person or “you” form that I have just demonstrated, is actually a form we use when we are being friendly or familiar with the person we are addressing. I prefer to teach this form

first so that students can address each other in a friendly way and to open up the possibility of chatting to neighbours or getting a bit further in a conversation than ordering a beer.

However, a lot of people learn a slightly different form first, that is the more formal way of addressing “you”. The actual words for “you” (which don’t necessarily come into the sentence) are tú when we are being familiar and usted when we are being more formal. I try to encourage people not to get over-anxious about when they should use these forms. In the area of Spain I used to live everyone used the tú form (that is, as I have taught you above) all the time, which is perhaps why I’m biased in its favour. However, I’ve noticed that in the Murcia region, or perhaps just on the coast where there are a lot of visitors and strangers, it’s common to be approached using the usted form (which I am going to explain now – hold on) although the tú form can be switched to quite easily without anyone getting upset.

So, now for the good news. To change from more familiar to more formal all we have to do is remove the letter “s” from the first person verb. Therefore, here are our sentences again expressed more formally: ¿Necesita tomar medicamentos? ¿Quiere aprender más sobre España? ¿Va a visitar a su familia este verano? ¿Tiene que volver a trabajar? ¿Puede salir esta noche?

And the one that behaves differently: ¿Le gusta comer verduras?

There isn’t a huge amount more to it than that, although we will come back to this later on in more detail. In the meantime, enjoy interrogating those around you.

GOOD MORNING AUNTY: I run Windows XP and I am aware that shortly they will no longer be providing updates.

How will this affect me and is it likely to end up being a problem? Mark Aunty says: On 8th April 2014 Microsoft will stop providing any new updates or fixes for Windows XP. XP will continue to work.

But any new security flaws found will not be fixed by updates or patches.

There are a few options: Continue as normal ensuring your antivirus and antimalware is up to date and run regularly – Microsoft Security Essential will stop supporting XP next year, so look for an alternate antivirus system for XP. Use another internet browser, like Firefox or Chrome, as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer will no longer be supported or updated for XP Ensure you have no personal data on the PC - just in case Upgrade to a newer operating system - which may mean having to upgrade to a more powerful PC.

Security alert not working DEAR AUNTY: I am using Windows Vista with a paid AVG Internet Security and its antivirus package. On the right hand taskbar below, a window kept popping up saying, ‘Windows Security Alerts has been turned off’. When I checked the Windows Security Essential page, indeed the security alert had turned off. I clicked ‘Turn On’’security alert but it won’t work.

My concern is, do you think AVG Internet Security had turned it off while installing the software? If not how do I turn it on again? I have asked online help but Microsoft told me they are monitoring... Please help, Aunty.

Aunty says: It may simply be a reporting issue between AVG and the Windows Security system. It is known that the Windows Security system does not always work with some Antivirus programs, and although Windows says there is no Antivirus installed, the Antivirus can be installed and working properly.

As long as AVG says it is working and active, then it should not be a problem.

But if you want to, you can always uninstall and reinstall AVG and see if that cures the problem.

Openoffice not printing HI THERE: Can you help? I have typed quite a lot of things on an OpenOffice.org Text Document and managed to print them off but now I press print and it seems like it is going to print but nothing actually happens - I have a HP Deskjet 3520 series printer.

Aunty says: Does the printer print off anything at all - from other programs? If not, then it is a printer / driver problem. These are usually solved by uninstall-

ing the printer, rebooting the PC, and then reinstalling the printer.

If it is just in open office that it fails to print, are you sure all the settings are correct?

Do other parts of open office (like a spreadsheet or picture) print - is it just the text document that is a problem?) If it is all open office applications, then perhaps a reinstall of open office can fix the problem.

What is the highest score you have made on one hole?

By Tony Myles MOST AMATEUR golfers, and particularly high handicappers, prefer to play a Stableford game which provides the opportunity of discarding a badly played hole once you have exceeded a couple of shots over par. The hope being that, in subsequent holes, you can improve your game and recover the lost points.

However for many lower handicapped players this is almost a copout and they often feel that a round where each shot is counted is a better reflection of their game. Of course this Strokeplay system is the format for all professional competitions and for most amateur players there is some comfort to be found in the records of these games.

There are some classic examples of the professional Gods spending time amongst the hoi-polloi.

The extravert and highly unpredictable John Daly is a leader in that field having taken an 18 at the par five sixth hole at Bay Hill, his explanation was “I just ran out of patience”.

Also worth a mention is Kevin Na who was one under when he arrived at the par four 9th during the 2011 Texas Open.

When he left the green he was 14 over.

And whilst we are taking comfort from the discomfort of others, we can cast our minds back to the 1980 Masters and with the par 3 12th hole still fresh in our minds, consider the misfortune of Tom Weiskopf who gave us all a lot of encouragement by recording an unlucky 13.

Each of these is balanced by the fact that these players all enjoyed brilliant rounds which more than compensated for these historic lapses.

SORRY YOU’RE LEAVING! Some of the social media sites have been carrying copies of an article in this week’s Telegraph from a former colleague in Bay Radio, Jackie Miles Kirby. With a lot of regret Jackie packed up her family and left Spain. She is a victim of the recession and her attempts to carve out a living in a beautiful but somewhat remote area of the Southern Costa Blanca proved too difficult and so she has had to accept defeat. Some of my golf colleagues have suffered the same fate.

Plan Pive: Has it wrecked the car market in Spain?

PLAN PIVE is where the government in Spain offers sums of cash to tax payers (e.g. €2,000) to prospective buyers of selected new cars and commercial vehicles as long as the sale includes the scrapping of old vehicles.

A normal car is ten years plus old which will make classic cars in 20 years’ time more valuable in each case.

On the surface it seems a good idea as factories can keep employees working. However, the tax payers may not want or need a new vehicle in the current unemployment situation in Spain so are reluctant to take on the debt of a new car.

Many dealers are now refusing to take trade-ins of vehicles that are less than ten years old as their forecourts are full up with cars that are up to 5 years old that cannot be sold without ‘giving them away’. The values of used cars has fallen a lot, making owners very upset as they cannot afford to sell their trusty vehicle to buy a new one.

Luxury vehicles are not affected so much as they have pollution outputs so high they cannot qualify.

Faced with a choice of a good condition car that is up to five years old, even though it is at a lower price than the cut price new car specials, the finance commissions are another source of income for the dealers.
