THE BUSINESS of cruising continues to grow in Cartagena with the latest ship bringing a full ship of 3,100 passengers and 1,200 crew to town. P & O Cruises second largest ship stayed in port until 5.00pm with passengers filling up terraces, shops and visitor centres as they explored the ancient city..

This is the fifth cruise ship that stopped in Cartagena during the month of June, which, if the ships arrive filled to capacity, accounts for around 12,700 tourists .

Today, Friday, June 27th the former Homeric and Westerdam, the new Thomson Dream from Thomson Island Cruises, will arrive with more than 1,100 people, and on Sunday 29th, one of the World’s largest sailing ships, the Wind Surf from Windstar Cruises will visit with more than 300 passengers.

Cartagena’s cruise season continues to grow in July with the arrival of eight ships bringing with them about 15,200 tourists as Cartagena looks to enjoy one of its best cruise seasons on record.

The Port of Cartagena is looking towards further growth for 2015 and will be present-

ing their offer at Seatrade Med 2014 in Barcelona, from 16th to 18th September. Seatrade Med is an international exhibition for the cruise industry, which takes place every two years in the Mediterranean. Previous exhibitions were held in Genoa (Italy) from 1996 to 2004, in Naples (Italy) in 2006, Venice (Italy) in 2008, Cannes (France) in 2010 and Marseille (France) 2012. The Port of Barcelona, as the local host for Seatrade Med 2014, will organize the event for the first time for the city and also Spain.

MedCruise President Stavros Hatzakos stated: “The hosting of this event in Barcelona is a wonderful opportunity for the region to continue attracting cruise lines, and to give international promotion to the area and its cruise destinations. The bogus gas men return

by Keith Nicol THE GAS Men have returned to the Southern Costa Blanca yet again. Their most recent activities being in and around Quesada and Rojales. For decades residents have been plagued by a regular scam involving bogus gas inspectors. The scenario usually follows the routine of opening the door to be confronted by official looking gentlemen who show you an ID card and inform you that they need to inspect your gas installation. If you let them in, be almost certain that it will cost you money for an inspection that you probably do not need and certainly did not ask for.

While some of these gas inspectors are qualified to do the job, RTN readers should be aware that the gas company CESPA will never send a technician to your door unless there is an emergency or you have requested the need for an inspection. Thus, should some-

one tell you they need to inspect your system, take their ID and inform them that first you need to check with CESPA why your property requires an inspection and secondly, that you will check with the Local Police, to verify their qualifications. Should a qualified gas inspector gain entrance to your house, and they perform an inspection, if confronted, they will tell the police that they were invited to do so. If this is the case, you are paying them for a job of work you didn’t need and you will possibly be out of pocket for at least 150€.

The latest ploy in this long running saga happened in Quesada last week. After not being admitted to a number of premises, they drove off in a small Orange Fiat, license number 6670 FRL. The paperwork they show has an address in Alicante, C/Padrilla 14, which is possibly a paint shop in Alicante and nothing to do with the Gas business.

There are two men involved in this scam: one aged early 20’s and the other in his 40’s.

Pick up after your dog

By Keith Nicol TORREVIEJA’S MAYOR has obviously been listening to the concerns of local residents. At a meeting with the U3A last month, concerns were raised about the number of dog owners who let their dog’s ‘do their business’, but do not clean up after it. At the meeting, Dolon said that local laws existed to find and fine those who did not clean up after their dogs and also for those who ‘fly tip’, their garbage onto wasteland or leave furniture and appliances at the side of the road.

A new campaign recently started in billboards, newspapers and local radio, transmitting a very clear and direct message to remind citizens about the importance of respecting basic standards of cleanliness and maintenance. The campaign is designed to reach both residents and tourists, with posters that are in both English and Spanish. The program will be further promoted with street theatre, riders on Segways giving away special promotional items, plus a social media campaign on Facebook.

Policia Local have been prompted to remind citizens that if you do not pick up after your dog, that they are breaking the Ordinance Regulating to the Keeping of Animals, which says in its Article 15: animal droppings: that People with dogs and other animals, must prevent them from depositing their droppings on sidewalks, driveways, walks, gardens and generally anywhere dedicated to pedestrian traffic. They must pick up those droppings and failure to do so can result in fines ranging from 30€ to 601.01€.

On the subject of the collection of appliances and furniture, the campaign also highlights the need to not abandon them in the street. Torrevieja has as a pick up service that starts at 10:00pm, by calling the local collection agency on 966 702 390 or even better donate useable items to charity, who will arrange a pick up for you. In an emergency or time pressure situation, unwanted goods may be dropped off at: Ecoparque Torrevieja, which is located beside the Fire Station and close to the Policia Local.

Court investigates Landsbanki fraud

by Jack Troughton DENIA COURT has been ordered to reopen the files on a criminal complaint against Landsbanki Luxembourg over the collapsed Icelandic bank’s alleged corrupt equity release scheme.

Lawyers Martinez Echevarria, acting for the Landsbanki Victims Action Group on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, filed the original complaint against the bank ‘in liquidation’ at the courts in San Rocque and Denia in 2009.

The San Rocque court on the Costa del Sol accepted the complaint and its initial investigations are nearing completion.

However, the case has had a chequered history in Denia. It initially accepted the complaint and ring-fenced properties to prevent the threat of repossession – but then decided it was too big a matter to handle and referred it to the central criminal courts in Madrid.

The case was considered but the papers returned to Denia, the central criminal courts informing Denia the matter was within its remit. After further deliberation, it rejected the case and declared there was no case to answer – again putting homes at risk.

Mike McInnes, of the Landsbanki Victims Action Group, added: “Our lawyers appealed this decision to the Regional Supreme Court in 2012 and finally Alicante has now ruled that there is indeed a criminal case to investigate and has instructed Denia to do so.

A DUTCH company has invented an electronic ‘e-joint’. E-Njoint BV is selling ‘e-spliffs’ at promotional parties, music events, bars and clubs across Europe and its product is currently being manufactured at a rate of 10,000 items per day in China. The ‘e-spliff’ is shaped like a typical cannabis cigarette featuring a green cannabis leaf that lights up whenever the user takes a puff and costs around 10€. The manufacturers claim that the espliff is harmless, containing no tobacco or nicotine but instead natural Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin and flavouring in water vapour. However, the rechargeable version of the e-spliff may be filled with cannabis liquid content by the user. CEO of E-Njoint, Menno Contant, says: “Everyone should feel fine, because what we are doing is no crime.”

Tourist Tax for Benidorm?

Following a visit by the Mayor of Miami, Agustin Navarro is looking at the feasibility of introducing a tourist tax similar to the one that is paid in the American city. Miami City Council charges tourists one dollar per overnight stay and cruise ship passengers three dollars – raising a considerable amount of money. Cities like Miami and Benidorm are donors – giving the state more than it takes back. Catalonia introduced a tourist tax in November 2012, charging all tourists over 16 years of age and raised more than 41 million euros! In 2013 Benidorm had in the region of 11 million overnight stays in hotels alone – if they charged just 25 cent that would have raised nearly 3 million euros. The Council said that this is a long term project and not something that can or will be introduced with immediate effect.

White Van runs down dog

THE HUNT is on for the driver of a White Van, probably from the Orihuela Costa area, who deliberately ran down an innocent dog last Friday. The poor pooch is being cared for by the Little Pod Association who said “This is sweet Bod, who has just been hit by a van. You may well think accidents can happen however the White Transit Van involved deliberately drove on to the other side of the road, mounted the pavement and ran over Bod who was running in the campo. There were two men inside, possibly of Moroccan or Spanish Nationality. This deliberate and evil crime was not an accident, happened just past Eagles Nest, on the main road to San Miguel.”

The dog, suffered extensive injuries and had surgery to repair his smashed Pelvis on Monday. He suffered three breaks to his pelvis and hips, cuts, wounds and bruising all over his body. His spleen was swollen and bruised but all other internal organs seem to be ok.

A spokesperson said, “His poor family, Mandy, Jeff and their sons are devastated that this could have happened. They love him so much and all we can do for now is wait, hoping the surgery goes well and he can make a good recovery. He is in the

best possible place with one of the best bone surgeons. There are more pictures in his album on the Little Pod Foundation page of his injuries and xrays should. you wish to see them. French strike caused mayhem THE planned 6-day strike by French Air Traffic Controllers, which started on Tuesday but was fortunately called off after the second day, still caused untold disruption to the travel industry.

The airport reps and drivers are generally at the receiving end of abuse from tired and frustrated passengers, but the staff tries to stay calm and help wherever they can. Her advice is always call the airline before heading for the airport – and that applies at both ends, inform your transfer company and hotel of any changes to your arrival times / dates and they will all try their upmost to accommodate you. At the end of the day, Benidorm is reliant on the tourism industry even though this chaos is caused by circumstances totally beyond their control.

Abortion law to be amended

AFTER SIX months of constant public demonstrations and heated debate, the abortion law is to be amended. In a new version to be approved in July, termination will be permitted in the case of fetal malformation without the mother having to prove psychological damage, overturning the earlier decision to dispense with this clause, which was endorsed by the Constitutional Court in 1985.

All other restrictions concerning a woman’s right to abort remain in place.

Primark sweatshop allegations BARGAIN CLOTHING store Primark is investigating a report made by 25-year-old Rebecca Gallagher of Swansea, South Wales, that she discovered a hand-written plea for help attached to the washing instructions inside a 12.50€ dress she bought locally. The message was from someone who alleges that they are forced to work long hours in a sweatshop in terrible conditions to produce the garment. Only hours later, a similar ‘message label’ was found by 21-year-old Rebecca Williams, attached to a summer top she had purchased, also in Wales. Both customers have said they will no longer shop at Primark over concerns that their garments are manufactured under inhumane conditions. Spain has a total of 35 Primark stores.

Drunk Driver travels 32 kilometres in wrong direction

THE GUARDIA Civil detained a person for driving 32 km in the opposite direction and being four times over the legal limit for alcohol.

by Keith Nicol The driver tested positive showing 0.98 mg./L alcohol in the breath alcohol test. The driver was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The arrest took place just outside Lorca on the A-7 at about 2.00am on June 25th. Guardia Civil in Almeria alerted their counterpart in Murcia that a Traffic Patrol on the HuercalOvera (Almería) road had detected a passenger car travelling on the A-7 headed towards Murcia but on the road reserved for Almería headed traffic. Traffic patrols quickly cut off slip roads to the A-7 and N-340 and sent out patrols to warn other drivers of possible dangers.

Agents from the Guardia Civil managed to stop the offending vehicle, a passenger car driven by a 35 year old man of Ecuadorian nationality, who was presenting clear and obvious symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle was seized and taken to the Lorca impound. The offence of reckless driving may be punished with imprisonment ranging from six months to two years plus the loss of a licence for between one and six years.

situation to phone 112 (emergencies) or 062 (Guardia Civil) immediately. They also advise that wherever possible to use the right lane of the carriageway of highways and motorways, as those who drive the wrong way on these types of roads typically use the left channel, believing this to be a conventional one-lane road in each direction.

A HEAVILY loaded truck with failed brakes has careered at high speed through the centre of the town of Fraga near Huesca, causing half a mile of destruction to public and private property before finally coming to rest the other side of a main roundabout. The vehicle ploughed through trees, lampposts, public benches and a series of walls. The co-driver tried to jump from the cab to safety but sustained a head injury and was later removed to hospital. Eight cyclists mown down by van EIGHT CYCLISTS riding in a group were hit and injured on Saturday at 11.45am in the Galician town of Santa Maria de Oia, Pontevedra. The scene was attended by four ambulances, agents of the Traffic Police, various Medical Emergency teams and a helicopter. Two of the cyclists were seriously wounded. Saving the Spanish monarchy

by Jack Troughton SPAIN’S KING Juan Carlos abdicated last week in a bid to prop up the constitutional monarchy in the face of a growing republican movement, Labour International Costa Blanca was told. The monarch stepped aside to allow his son – now King Felipe – to take the throne, and take the risk of a referendum on the issue following a general election next year.

Branch member Kevin Bruton gave the Labour party’s June meeting an update on the Spanish political scene.

He said the country’s two main parties, the PP and PSOE, had lost out to the left in the European Elections last month and on 2nd June King Juan Carlos announced his abdication.

“There is more to the abdication than meets

the eye,” said Kevin, an Emeritus Professor of Spanish at Stirling University. “In my opinion, he and his advisors came to the conclusion that if he stayed beyond next year’s general election, parliament could be dominated by parties in favour of a republic.”

CONSTITUTION And he said there were clauses in the Spanish Constitution that would enable a new parliament in 2015 to trigger a vote on the issue.

“Because of King Juan Carlos’ perceived unpopularity with the Spanish public, this could well happen. Better to go now in favour of his more popular son Felipe than take this risk.”

A JUDGMENT passed by the Litigation Administrative Court in Madrid has overturned a traffic ticket imposed upon a driver who ran a red light on the grounds that images captured by traffic cameras ‘do not represent a sufficient guarantee of veracity’. The European Automobile Associates (AEA) said in a statement that the penalty fine would have been 200€ plus the loss of four points on the driver’s license for allegedly running a red light in Madrid in June 2012, which the driver strenuously denies.

The court found that there is no evidence that the image was not taken by a police officer and also that as the period of time the amber light was showing was unknown it could not be proved that the driver could stop safely. It was also ruled that Madrid council must pay the court costs.

Ryanair offering on AENA shares

by Jan Gamm OVER RECENT years Irish low budget airline Ryanair has played out countless differences of opinion both in and out of court directly opposing the management of Spanish airport operator Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA).

In 2012, after a long running battle over charges for air bridges at the new AlicanteElche airport, AENA’s persistence paid off when the court threw out Ryanair’s objections over the use of the bridges – and more importantly payment to use them in favour of boarding from the tarmac.

INTEREST Ryanair’s forthright CEO Michael O’Leary has criticised AENA on a number of other issues but has been watching with interest as news broke of the Spanish operator’s decision to release 49% of its shares to private ownership in a bid to transform the company into a global entity.

Now Ryanair, one of AENA’s ‘big four’ customers alongside IAG, Iberia and Vueling, is ‘placing an interest’ in these shares, confirmed by the airline’s head of marketing,

Peter Bellew. “Actually we think they should sell out 100% of AENA,” said Bellew, “but we are interested in the whole process. We meet these conditions, we have the money and we are long term investors.”

ACQUISITION This is not the first time that Ryanair has made an attempt to acquire an interest outside of the standard airline passenger business. The company was interested in the terminal at Dublin’s airport but in the end O’Leary decided it was a ‘waste of space and fares would have to go up to pay for it’ – interestingly he had the same opinion of Alicante-Elche Airport when it replaced El Altet.

In 2012 Ryanair also took an interest in buying a share of Stansted Airport, which went to other investors.

Initially 28 per cent of AENA is up for grabs to be offered on the Spanish stock exchange with an additional 21 per cent to long-term investors and a 51% majority share retained.

Ryanair’s pocket stretches to around €3 billion in cash and liquid assets, including the proceeds of a recent €850m bond issue. AENA’s current assets are valued at €16 billion.

King and Queen receive gay representatives

SPAIN’S NEW King and Queen welcomed representatives of the LGBT (Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals) among other NGOs and charities on Tuesday at a reception held at the El Pardo Palace. The federation had been notably excluded in the past by Queen Sofia who was openly opposed to gay marriage. Queen Letizia expresses a more liberal view, saying that the work of the LGBT “deserves to be better known and acknowledged.”

Passport shambles WHAT AN absolute shambles HM Passport Office UK now finds itself in. Arthur and Tina’s problem (front page RTN recently) is shared by countless people in the United Kingdom, and here in Spain. Paying an extra £55 on top of the already exorbitant price for a replacement passport to ‘fast track’ the process… Tina is, of course, still waiting…

Because of a fast approaching anniversary trip to the UK the British Consulate in Alicante were approached, where Tina and Arthur were told that a temporary passport could be issued, but at a cost of 242Euros! What an utter disgrace! This problem was caused by total inefficiency at the United Kingdom Passport Office, so what do our representatives of the United Kingdom here in Alicante, Spain, do to help? Take a fistful of Euros to issue temporary passports!

Perhaps British Consul Paul Rodwell, and his side kick, Vice Consul Lloyd Milen, should spend less time wining and dining at Black Tie events, and being photographed with the ‘great and good’ and give more thought to knocking a few of their colleagues’ heads together at the passport office.

How nice it would be, if the British Consulate were to offer full refunds to British subjects, who, through no fault of their own, have been forced to hand over many hundreds of Euros to civil servants in Alicante for temporary passports. Shindler is listed in Europe

by Jack Troughton VETERAN CAMPAIGNER Harry Shindler was described as a “remarkable” man in the heart of Europe during a keynote speech on the future of justice within the EU. The 92-year-old won praise from Viviane Reding, the Justice Commissioner, during her speech to the centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels for his battle for all expats to enjoy a vote in British elections.

Currently Harry – like many expats – has no voice because of a rule that prevents them voting in beyond 15 years after they left the UK. He has won considerable support for his stand in both Britain and Europe.

Mrs Reding has already called on Great Britain and four other countries – Denmark, Cyprus, Ireland and Malta – which remove the franchise for citizens after a period of time living abroad to think again.

She maintains laws should be changed because they were “punishing citizens for having exercised their right to freedom of movement.”

The commissioner was speaking about EU justice policy which had shifted its focus to

those who relied on it – citizens and businesses – rather than being a “playground for lawyers”.

And Mrs Reding said initiatives should help individuals and companies take full advantage of the single market to allow justice “to become an instrument to boost economic growth and employment.”

HEART She said Europe’s people needed to be “at the heart” of justice policies and listed Harry - appointed an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List - as one of three examples of the “courage and persistence” that inspired change.

She said Harry was a veteran of World War Two who fought in Italy and returned after the war but had lost his vote in UK elections.

“He has lost his voice in the nation for which he fought. And he is not alone: there are many EU citizens who are disenfranchised simply because they used their right to move to another EU member state,” said Mrs Reding.

She said the European Commission had listened and acted on calls from help from

citizens and had asked the five countries to show greater flexibility over voting rights.

“These citizens should have the option of applying to remain on the electoral roll and should be informed about conditions for retaining their right to vote in national elections.

“This is about empowering EU citizens who feel strongly about their country and

making sure they are not automatically denied the fundamental right of voting. It is about making sure citizens do not lose one right because they exercise another.”

Neighbours snare suspects SHARP-EYES OF a newly formed branch of Neighbourhood Watch on the Costa Blanca led to the arrest of three burglary suspects last weekend.

by Jack Troughton At just over two weeks old, members of the fledgling organisation on Cumbre del Sol, Benitachell, are already proving their worth combating crime.

Information had been circulated to residents of the urbanisation about a white Opel Astra believed to be linked to three earlier burglaries in the area.

And one of the new Neighbourhood Watch coordinators spotted the suspect vehicle – along with two men and a woman inside – and immediately called the Guardia Civil. Officers were quickly on the scene to make arrests.

Margaret Hales, MBE, President of the Cumbre branch, the 50th to be formed in Spain, told RTN: “We were only formed on 5th June but this is proof the Neighbourhood Watch

system works. Our network of eyes across the urbanisation, our rapid means of communication, and our cooperation with the local police and Guardia Civil means that those acting suspiciously will be reported.

“Thanks to the police, we have one less gang stealing from inhabitants of the Costa Blanca.”

And a week ago in a Benitachell meeting lead Neighbourhood Watch coordinators Mike and Muriel Sadler explained the system and recruited their first colleagues – although more are needed to cover the whole of Cumbre. Change of habit ONE OF Spain’s most beautiful career models has quit the runway to become a nun. 36-year-old Olalla Oliveros, who has appeared in leading modelling programmes all over Spain, joined the Order of Saint Michael after a visit to Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal. Olalla has also turned down a lucrative film contract to follow her vocation as a nun. She said that after visiting the shrine to Fatima she could not shake off the image of herself in a habit.

She said: “I grew tired of a world of lies, appearances, falsity, hypocrisy and deception, a society full of anti-values that exalts violence, adultery, drugs, alcohol, fighting, and a world that exalts riches, pleasure, sexual immorality and fraud.

The Lord is never wrong. He asked if I will follow him, and I could not refuse.”

Steve Claridge bringing winning ideas to Torrevieja

by Keith Nicol FORMER WORLD Cup champions England, Spain and Italy have all packed their bags after a disastrous campaign in Brazil. Before you know it the season will have started again and one of the many football pundits football fans will see on their screen is Steve BBC pundit, Steve Claridge.

Steve was in Torrevieja during last season, as a spokesperson for ‘The Winning Express’.

He is a well known face to BBC football fans being on the first ever episode of the Football League show, where he remained a pundit every since. Steve only retired from competitive football two seasons ago, having been born just six weeks or so before England won the World Cup in 1966. Over the years, he played for more than twenty clubs, managed three and is still entertaining the idea of a return to management.

With the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa areas having a huge area of football mad kids, but only a few clubs for which they can play, Steve thinks that there is plenty of opportunity to encourage grassroots level football in the area and noted that he was very impressed by the facilities of Torrevieja’s Sports City, which few teams can match in the UK. In the UK, Steve is bringing his unique sporting know-how to an exciting new coaching set-up designed to provide activities for thousands of children every week in schools and clubs. Liam Neeson Takes Revenge

NORTHERN IRISH actor, Liam Neeson spent a few days in La Manga and down Cartagena way this week, shooting scenes from the third instalment of the film franchise, ‘Taken’.

by Keith Nicol THE 62 year old, 6’2” actor from Ballymena is a former Ulster amateur senior boxing champion but only became an action hero back in 2008, when he made the first Taken film, which to date has grossed more than 600 million dollars at the box office. This was followed by the lead role in the ‘A Team’ in 2010, ‘Taken 2’ in 2012 and his latest production, ‘Taken 3’, which will be the final film in the series.

This week the Directorate General of Highways of the region and the Traffic Department of the Ministry of Interior authorised the closing of the RM-E22 that connects Cartagena, Isla Plana and La Azohía for the shooting of several scenes from the movie.

The scenes filmed were for a car chase along the bends of the back roads with a spectacular car chase that included one of the cars rolling down the hill. This required the assistance of the cooperation of the Cartagena Fire Department to control any flames or sparks that might need extinguishing. The film is known as ‘Revenge’ in the Spanish market, also is filming scenes at San Javier Airport.

The Irish actor arrived on a private ‘jet’, into San Javier and was picked up in a luxury high-end black vehicle with tinted windows before being whisked away to

the La Manga Club where Neeson and the production team are staying until July 1st.

In this third instalment of ‘Taken’, Neeson will again be accompanied by Maggie Grace, who plays his daughter, Forest Whitaker and Famke Janssen, who plays his wife, led by French director Olivier Megaton.

Principal photography began on March 29, 2014 in Los Angeles. In the United States, 20th Century Fox will release the film on January 9, 2015 in the USA, Sweden and Holland with a possible world premier in London on January 8th. The production team next move from San Javier to Paris but also look like they could travel to one more local location that is being kept secret, along the coast, to film some additional scenes in this action film.

A TORREVIEJA student has come out top in the field of education. Torrevejense Carmen Moreno Gómez was certified as having the absolute top marks in the whole of the Comunidad Valenciana last week, with an overall score of an amazing 9.775. This remarkable achievement was recognised by Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolón, who along with the Councillor for Education and Youth Rosario Martínez Chazarra met with her and the Director of Colegio “La Purísima”, Ángeles Pérez, to offer their congratulations.

Carmen Moreno Gómez is in her second year of studies for her Bachiller at La Purísima and plans to further her education studying Archaeology at the Universidad de Barcelona. And it’s certainly not a case of her just being cooped up in her books all day as she also enjoys music, reading and motorcycles, with her favourite group being ‘Queen’.

Assisted Housing Fund from Reach Out

REACH OUT have been in operation for just three years but in that time have helped hundreds of homeless people and those in need of help for their families. Reach Out currently helps around 90 local homeless men and women plus 35 families in poverty. Torrevieja’s homeless are offered a breakfast and lunch at the charity’s drop in centre from a charity kitchen and offered the opportunity to have a shower, have their clothes washed and dried plus are given food and basic provisions.

There latest fund raising venture from Reach Out/Extiende La Mano, is an Assisted Housing Fund in response to the recent serious demand for emergency housing in the area. The charity’s President, Karolina Leonard explained, “We have had a few desperate cases of late. A young 19-year old homeless girl has discovered she is pregnant and is currently sleeping rough. We also have a widower with three young children, with the youngest just two. His wife passed away last year and he cannot find work because he is caring for the children; he cannot care for the children because he cannot work and very recently, he and his children were evicted and are now homeless. Luckily, he was able to place the children temporarily, but separately, with a caring family.”

Karolina continued, “The assisted hous-

ing fund is a separate account which will allow us to help out with emergency accommodation in special cases. It is quite possible that these people might receive assistance from social services but the paperwork takes so long to go through that they could be on the streets for quite a Councillors while; waiting for a form to be stamped or Tomas an application to be approved.”

by Councillor for Youth, Rosario Martínez Chazarra who said: “the registration period is now open for the Urban Youth Camp 2014, which is held at the Information Centre for Youth Animation (CIAJ) over the next two fortnights of July. Rosario explained that the Campus offers a variety of activities to promote the establishment of healthy habits and basic rules of coexistence, within a line of cooperation and coeducation. Rosario added: “its purpose is not merely recreation, but so that everyone will the respect themselves and to others and be able to follow the rules. For this, the Urban Camp seeks the active participation of young people through teamwork and total cooperation for the realization of a common goal, and so young people learn to develop their personality and to exploit their own knowledge.”

Among the activities offered are different workshops, crafts, dance classes, trips to the beach, Gymkhanas, etc.. The price per fortnight is 50€ but space and numbers are limited.

by Patricia Thompson This small Day Care Centre caters for adults with mental illnesses. Clients are always accepted via a psychiatrist in Cartagena and via Social Services. Due to limited funding they can cater for only 10 adults daily in the centre. These are able to make a contribution but the 18 outpatients are unable to do so. Yet the centre has still managed to create a caring and happy atmosphere for those who attend; an organisation that does so much with so little funding.

Included in the services provided are psychotherapy, workshops, bicycle repair, furniture renovation, garden projects, music, art, IT training and more.

And families achieve a better understanding of the illness and how to cope with the situation. One client gained 3rd prize in a national art competition in Madrid!

‘Viva La Yoga’ YVONNE GARNHAM from Quesada recently published her second novel ‘Viva La Yoga’. It’s a fictional, contemporary romance, featuring five women of a certain age who meet at yoga class.

Yvonne thinks there are not nearly enough chicklit novels around, where the main characters are aged fifty-plus, so ‘Viva La Yoga’ is about these five women, who embark on a summer holiday together in Spain.

Yvonne’s first novel, ‘Consequences’, is a family saga spanning thirty years and has plenty of twists and turns to keep readers absorbed. Recently Yvonne was interviewed

by Hannah Murray from Talk Radio Europe for her weekly Book Show, where ‘Viva La Yoga’

LA NUCIA, just a few kilometres from Benidorm and wellknown for its big flea market on Sunday mornings, held its first Medieval Market in 2005, celebrating its 300 year anniversary.

This year 8th, 9th & 10th July will mark the tenth occasion, with a varied programme including troubadours; a juggler on stilts who also plays with fire and lies on a bed of really sharp nails, managing to get both feet tucked behind her head; a story teller; street theatre; medieval table games and a merry-go-round for the children.

On some 70 craft stalls, carefully selected by organisers Amata, nothing is made in craft factories - everything is made by the people on the stall and there is a wide range of different products. Quite a few stallholders will be working: Vito, a Czech blacksmith, on his anvil showing pieces of medieval armour; Aurélie will be carding and spinning wool and even making felt; Tomás painting T-shirts (the ultimate designer wear, each one is unique); Chema the bookbinder showing how books were bound in medieval times; Tony with his sturdy and decorative leather bags…

And there will be taverns, an Arab tea tent and stalls with preserved food using medieval recipes.

Two separate groups of musicians travel the narrow streets, and various medieval characters - nobles, beggars and soldiers - while Ly walks on her stilts, juggling clubs

as she goes. Buffoon Bertoldo tells funny stories that even foreigner with no Spanish at their disposal can follow. Medieval table games feature Nine Men’s Morris, quoits, table skittles… For the very young there is a merry-go-round and four donkeys in miniature medieval trappings.

La Nucia Medieval Market, 10 km from Benidorm, gets going about 6pm and keeps going till around midnight. The stalls are set up in the narrow streets at the back of the Town Hall. If you don’t know the way, follow the white-on-green arrows marked ‘Mercado Medieval’. There is ample room to park your car nearby.

By Jack Troughton GOLFERS CAN tee off in the Guardian Angels’ Charity Golf Competition on Monday (30th June) and help raise money for the group which supports single parent families. The contest at the Ifach Golf Club takes the form of a mixed Texas Scramble over 18 holes with an 8.30am start. The tournament is open to non-members and the 45€ entrance fee includes a buffet lunch and one drink. Non-players can enjoy the lunch for 15€. The prize presentation takes place after the contest. by Jack Troughton THE UNSUNG heroines of the First World War, the ‘Munitionettes’, are in action from Monday 30th June to Saturday 5th July to take part in Javea Players’ ‘carry on smiling’ revue ‘Happy Days are Here Again’.

Munitionettes work long hours in munitions factories during the Great War for less than half a man’s wage and at risk from hazardous chemicals and explosions.

By 1917 they were producing over 80% of the ammunition needed by the British Army at the front – the war could not have been won without them.

The hard work and Spartan conditions may not have given Munitionettes much to smile about, but smile they did. Stars of the Music Hall visiting the factories found they were more than willing to join in the songs of the day.

The annual Javea Player Summer Show starts with a traditional al fresco meal in the Plaza Baix by Bar Imperial before the show in the nearby Casa de Cultura.

San Juan and bonfires

by Keith Nicol ALL ALONG the Costa Blanca, revilers enjoyed the night time festivities on beaches for San Juan Day and Hogueras. From families and friends setting up simple BBQ pits and enjoying their supper with friends, to the more organised, who spread glowing cinders and then proceeded to walk barefoot over them, often carrying friends on the back, these free activities attract thousands who make sure they are out enjoying themselves into the early hours of morning.

In Torrevieja, sadly the ‘castle’ of fireworks has not returned in these days of austerity, but thousands of mainly teenagers, headed down to the Acequión beaches on Monday

night, to light their bonfires, and ‘cleanse their souls and their worries’ by leaping over them.

The young and young at heart Torrevejenses took part in the day of San Juan; the ancestral rite of purifying fire which this year attracted more than 2,000 people to the beaches.

The four days of festivities concluded with the Cremá or Bonfires that traditionally mark the end of ‘hogueras’. Prior to the cremá, the organisers of the Barrio del Acequión delivering thanks to all the contributors for taking part in the mini-hogueras contest. At midnight, the Nit de la Cremá, and the Belleza del Fuego de la Hoguera del “Sequión”, Naomi Martínez Holzchuh along with the Reina de la Sal, Saray Sánchez Jurado and their Damas de Honor, lit the wick of

Fete success THE CALPE Branch of the Royal British Legion raised over 1,700€ for the Poppy Appeal with its successful Summer Fete held at the Chez Flo bar and Restaurant in La Fustera.

Visitors enjoyed a selection of stalls and a Grand Raffle. The Legion thanks all the local businesses who donated raffle prizes and volunteers for giving up their time to make a memorable afternoon.

Charity takes centre stage YOUNGSTERS FROM Footlights Youth Theatre presented 500 Euros to Caritas Calpe to support the food fund helping needy families in the Marina Alta town – the group’s third donation to the charity.

And over the last 12 months, Footlights has raised over 2,000€ for Lions

International charities and was able to send 2,450€ to the Philippines Typhoon Disaster Appeal last November following a bucket collection made during the production of South Pacific.

Footlights is proud of its charitable record having donated more than 30,000€ to good causes over the last 10 years. Footlights Youth Theatre

presents its Summer Show on Wednesday 2nd July at 8pm in the auditorium of Calpe’s Casa de Cultura.

Described as a ‘feel good’ performance, there are no tickets for the free show. However, a bucket collection will be made in support of Friends of the children of EMAUS – last year’s summer production raised 450€ for the charity.

All the pupils at the Colegio Publico Serrella aged between three and 12-yearolds were involved in the show, penned by Elton John and Tim Rice but performed in Valenciano! The school had wanted to stage a musical for some years and thanks to a generous donation by Jalon Valley HELP of a sound system, the students were finally able to entertain family and friends. Thanks to new microphones the audience were able to enjoy the dialogue while appreciating the imaginative costumes.

Don’t waste so much water

NO DOUBT many readers’ reaction to the continuing drought will have been to water more frequently and perhaps turn up the pressure so that the surface of the soil receives more water per minute.

I say the soil receives rather than plants receive for in many cases the plants in your garden actually use up very little of your irrigation water, whether you are watering via an irrigation system, hose, watering can or just waiting patiently for the rain. Much of the water is in fact lost or wasted for the following reasons.

Most rain water, when it rains, is not collected stored or distributed effectively around the garden.

Water runs away from plants across bone dry hard surfaced soil.

Water is lost by evaporation from the upper levels of the soil.

During dry weather water is sucked sideways by the surrounding soil acting like a dry sponge.

In poor soils much water drains quickly down through the soil away from the growing roots.

Rain water is not channelled to thirsty plants, bushes and trees.

Rain or surplus irrigation water is allowed to run off your land onto adjacent properties.

Drought resistant plants are co-planted with thirsty plants so they receive too much water.

Many drought resistant plants, shrubs and trees are still being watered years after they established a deep root structure.

Short lived thirsty plants are planted up and planted daily.

Recognising such problems I have spent recent weeks compiling a new 90-page book titled ‘How to Use Less Water in Your Garden – A Practical Guide to Waterwise Mediterranean Style Gardening’. This is now available from Amazon Books and will be eventually available from other internet bookshops. Some 300 practical improvement actions are presented and a list of some 250 of the most drought resistant plans for Spanish gardens is included. At present I don’t yet have a final copy of the book so cannot show you the cover until books arrive from the US. Although many commercial agricultural crops are already being lost due the drought in many cases more beautiful

and productive gardens can be created and maintained with considerably less watering.

If you are worried about the amount of water required to grow summer vegetables start to grow them where they are only in full sun for half the day and in black plastic builders-buckets.

Before sowing seeds or planting plantlets fill the buckets half full with well-rotted manures and then fill up the top half with a water retaining but well-draining rich soil/compost mix. A. The problem has been that many foreigners buying offplan here in Spain i.e. properties yet to be built or under construction, paid large sums of money in deposits and stage payments.

They have subsequently lost this money due to the developers going bankrupt and banks not having issued the legally required bank guarantees on their payments.

Q: Is this a widespread problem?

A: Yes it is, the crisis in the Spanish property sector has put a lot of developers out of business meaning they have been unable to complete projects that they started during

the boom period. Hundreds of people have lost tens of thousands of Euros due to this situation.

Q: But who is liable for this?

A: Both the developer and the bank can be held liable in these cases. However, as many of the developers have entered bankruptcy proceedings or disappeared altogether, in lots of the cases it is only the bank that can be held liable.

Q: So is there a way for those affected to reclaim their money?

A: Yes there is. It’s a legal requirement that bank guarantees are provided when off-plan payments are made and legal action can be taken against banks that did not provide these guarantees.

Q: And what’s the chance of the legal action being

successful?

A: Although success is not guaranteed (excuse the pun) many of those taking out cases against the banks over guarantees are winning and we have a strong track record of success at Fuster & Associates, most recently against Banco Mare Nostrum when representing a British couple.

Q: But aren’t the legal fees expensive?

Considering withdrawing your whole Pension?

You could be better keeping it invested PENSION SAVERS should think twice before cashing in their retirement pots under new freedom rules and consider that they might get the best deal by keeping it invested.

A leading Pensions expert says people reaching retirement from next April should not make any rash decisions, as it could result in their paying more tax than they need to on their pensions withdrawals.

In fact, if you have access to a good pension scheme such as a QROPS with fair charges and decent investment options, you should consider moving your money there and dip into it when you need to.

In April 2015, pension holders will have a huge array of options available to them. This could prove confusing and if the wrong options are chosen, they could be left regretting their decision for the rest of

their lives.

A survey by a top pension provider in the UK has found that one in five over-60s plan on taking their whole pension as a lump sum from next April, while one in two people plan to transfer their lump sum to savings accounts.

If people make this decision it will mean paying income tax on withdrawals from their pension, depleting its value. In addition the returns in these accounts are likely to be poorer than the growth to be had by keeping the pension invested. Other surveys have shown that people are considering using the money to invest in Bonds or buy to let: both these options are strewn with unforeseen pitfalls.

People feel totally disconnected from their pension savings. The lack of access has almost made people feel as if it wasn’t really their money. The new pension

freedom rules will change that, but people shouldn’t rush to free their money from the ‘pension prison’ without first talking through their options with a financial adviser.

Taking a withdrawal from a pension has irreversible tax consequences on both the withdrawal and on the remaining funds. So while the new pension rules afforded to UK savers are hugely positive, there is a potential price to pay.

Is there a minimum amount that a noncustodial parent must pay as maintenance (child support)?

DEAR LAWYERS, My ex partner has left home, and I live with our common daughter, who is 5 years old. He told me that he cannot help me with the costs of our “minor” daughter, because he doesn’t earn any money. Although he has assets, like a car, part of a house in Spain, etc. Can I legally claim against him for some kind of allowance for our daughter?

Dear Madam, your enquiry concerns Spanish Family Law and the existence of a minimum maintenance, alimony or child support in Spain.

While there is no law in Spain that establishes a minimum amount to be paid as child support, Spanish judges and tribunals are in agreement about the need to set compensations to cover at least a minimum level for living. Therefore, in these cases where the noncustodial parents has no income, it

is normal that the courts still establish child maintenance, alimony or allowance, in favor of the children under legal age.

It is understood that the parents always have the obligation and duty to cooperate and contribute to their childrens’ expenses, because minors have a number of vital needs that their parents are responsible for. The parent who is unemployed must find a job or take the necessary steps to make sure that they contribute and collaborate with the needs of their descendants at least with a minimum amount, which would be established by the courts and tribunals.

The absence of a legal article or rule specifying this minimum amount means that the minimum child maintenance depends on each court. Since there isn’t a uniform criteria for all courts, we cannot give you an exact amount, minimum

Spanish child support could range between 120€ and 200€ a month, depending on where the children live.

Just for informative purposes, you should know that there is a note from the Spanish General Judiciary Council ( CGPJ), from June 2013, which includes some tables and scales to be used as guidance, with different children maintenance or allowance amounts to be paid, depending on the number of children, parents incomes, etc. Although this note does not specify a minimum, it mentioned as an example that a noncustodial parent should pay about 197 € / month child maintenance and support for 1 child, assuming that the custodial parent had no income, and the non custodial parent had revenues of 700 € a month.

Lextax Consulting THE LEGAL and tax advice firm from Javea, Lextax Consulting, was appointed last 12th June to be part of a group of experts set up by the European Commission to contribute to identify tax problems facing individuals who are active across borders within the EU. Algirdas Šemeta, Commissioner for Taxation said: “The strength of the European Union relies on people being able to move freely within the single market - to work, study and retire. It is essential that everyone is tax compliant, but tax compliance must be made easy too.

This needs particular attention in cross-border situations where double taxation must be eliminated.”

This group of experts, part of the Taxation and Customs Union from the European Commission, is set up by a maximum of twenty organizations from different countries from the European Union. Lextax Consulting has been selected to be part of it due to its experience and knowledge in individuals’ taxation.

Lextax Consulting is a law and tax advisory firm founded in

2011 by Juan Jose Martinez Perez and Gloria Diego Herrero.

Their specialty is the tax and legal advice to foreign residents and companies.

The consulting company from Javea is also included at the lawyers’ lists made by the British Consulate in Alicante, and also those made by the Irish and Australian embassies in Spain. It is also member entity from the ‘2013-2016 Entity attached to the Strategy for Entrepreneurship and Youth Employment’ granted by the Spanish Secretary of State of Employment.

From now Lextax Consulting will be part of this group of experts working to help individuals’ activity inside the European Union, mainly in the personal income taxation and inheritance taxation field; however, it is also likely that they will work in the taxation of vehicles and the taxation of e-commerce.

The first meeting of this group of experts will be next 30th

June in Brussels, where Gloria Diego Herrero, the partner managing the accounting and taxation area, with more than ten years’ experience in international tax advising for the expatriated. Throughout the year there will be more meetings which will be attended by Laura Miralles Server, member of the taxation area from the office.

Lextax Consulting expects that these meetings will definitely represent the tax laws implementation that will help Spanish move within the European Union, as well as the foreign residents’ settlement in Spain.

Lextax Consulting, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility policy, has developed actions focused on this aim, participating in initiatives and public talks for foreign residents in the English and German languages, organised by the Helpdesk from Javea’s Townhall.

Meet the inventor of the circus HISTORIAN AND author Mike Rendell’s new book investigates the life and adventures of cavalryman Philip Astley, the man regarded as ‘the father of the modern circus’.

by Jack Troughton The biography ‘Philip Astley – the Story of an English Hussar’ marks the bi-centenary of the death of a brave soldier, brilliant showman, and the horse whisperer of his age.

Mike, who spends half his year living in the Jalon Valley and frequently speaks at U3A meetings along the Costa Blanca, said his hero became a star and a “giant” of popular entertainment through horsemanship.

Astley, who died in 1814 in Paris, aged 72, fixed his show in a circle – he even called it a ring. He discovered with a diameter of 42 feet a horse could gallop at full speed without changing its gait and the centrifugal force helped keep the rider upright – with all the action in front of the audience. Mike added: “It is still the standard size of a circus ring in use today.”

Equestrian skill was at the heart of the show. Astley could get his horse to dance the minuet or a hornpipe. He did handstands on the back of a horse while firing a pistol, jump off the back of a horse over a ribbon held 10 feet from the ground, or ride three or four horses at once, or slide off the saddle to pick up a sword from the ground without pausing.

He was also a brave man. During the battle of Emsdorf during the Seven Years War he thought nothing of charging through enemy line to rescue the Duke of Brunswick who had fallen injured. He captured an enemy standard and presented it to George II and later rubbed shoulders with George III. SHOWMAN Mike said: “Astley was one of the greatest showmen of his age – indeed of any Age. His name is now almost forgotten, but why? Forget Barnum, forget Bailey – a hundred years earlier than these giants of the triple top, Philip Astley laid down the basics of the modern circus.

“He blew the socks off fanatical crowds and went on to open no fewer than 19 circus premises throughout England and Europe.”

The showman also invented the role of ringmaster, standing in the centre of his ring directing horses and performers with his bellowing voice and immense stature – Astley stood at over six feet tall and “had a girth like a tree trunk.”

“Everything had the wow factor,” said Mike. “Astley diversified from horse riding skills to introduce equestrian clowning; he did juggling and magic tricks...he brought a spectacle involving fireworks, an orchestra, juggling, acrobatics, rope walking, and so on and gave the public what they wanted – skills and thrills aplenty.”

Afecancer say ‘thanks’ THE NEW Cancer Support Charity, Afecancer are dedicated to helping victims of cancer and their families come to terms with the dreaded illness.

By Keith Nicol Over the last few weeks, Teresa and her small team of volunteers have been busy organising events, to both raise awareness and funds, for the NGO. Teresa from AFECANCER would like to thank all the performers for the support at the events at Zenia Boulevard and The Emerald Isle and to members of the public for supporting their cause. Teresa stressed; ‘All the donations that we raise are used for families and suffers in our area of Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and the Southern Costa Blanca. We help everyone, regardless of age, race or nationality. I want to thank all our volunteers and friends for all their efforts and to the public of the Orihuela Costa area for helping raise 3,241€ at these great events.

A BATH chair has been purchased and delivered by HELP to the grateful parents of a three-year-old little boy with cerebral palsy. Their Thank You letter expressed sincere gratitude. And HELP Murcia Mar Menor will also donate 500€ towards the costs of trips to hospital in Barcelona. At their general meeting on 17th June, the President Bernard Ash reported that since the last meeting, HELP Murcia Mar Menor had donated 2,000€ to Prometeo, a day centre for disabled and mentally handicapped adults who receive tuition in different tasks, as well as donations made to AIDEMAR and to AFEMAR Day Centre. CARITAS Sucina received 1,000€ and a cheque for 2000€ went to CARITAS La Puebla. The final figure for funds raised via the Camino Ingles walk will be around 7,400€. Hopefully by the end of June, money will be available to distribute to CARITAS in Santiago de la Ribera and San Javier and to DEBRA. Bernard thanked everyone who had contributed and the volunteers who keep raising money - long may it continue. Bernard introduced Janet Duxbury from Mar Menor Management La Manga Club, who came to donate money to HELP MMM, which is always welcome. They take in parcels for people in La Manga club that would normally be returned to the sender after a couple of weeks -whatever they collect they give to charity.

They have made 370€ so far this year, which they wished to donate to HELP MMM. Bernard thanked them for thinking of us and in return Janet thanked HELP for their efforts within the community.

U.F.O. sightings are greatly increasing, and scientists are combing the universe in ever intensely searching programmes looking for planetary situations where by alien life may be sustained. People are no longer nervous in talking about what they have seen in the skies, and this has led to more positive sightings, which have been recorded Worldwide, from British Airways pilots landing at London Gatwick Airport to on duty Police Officers across the Mexican/Californian border. In Chihuahua Mexico a craft more than a mile long was seen crossing the south side of the City last week. A mile long!? A mother and her child in Mesquites were blinded by a bright light which stalled their car and revealed to them a cigar shaped ship with round porthole windows. They felt they were being closely observed, and then when the ship disappeared over the mountain nearby, some twenty minutes later, their car started by itself and it was as if nothing had happened. However, they were five hours late for the party they were going to and their watches broke at exactly the same time just to prove the unexplained event.

There are so many closed minds that when changes come, and they will, there are so many unprepared to accept. Their stubbornness may be are so many unprepared to accept. Their stubbornness may be interpreted as their own faith and their own survival, but we do need to look at what is happening in the World to see that Wars and skirmishes, plagues of illnesses, the changes of weather, and the financial time bomb borne about by greed are fuelling negative actions Worldwide. There will be soon nowhere to hide, and the only way forward is to try to turn to the Spiritual solutions that enlighten the situation.

We can and do stand up to the World as Spiritualists, but we can also serve to learn more, to refuse to accept any alternatives that do not allow the World to share in what is current global abundance, though currently metered out to only a few elite.

Changes, come they will, and in time we will adapt and respond, all who hear the Spiritual call will know where they stand, who they will need to help and where we will all be.

This isn’t fortune telling but it is a call to awaken now those who have been lately sleeping, and to ensure that they know that they have been selected to be the very first to enter the new dimensions of an ever changing wonderful World.

Kenny, my friend can see auras, and she says that she has done since she was a little girl. Why can’t I see them? Is there anything that I can do to lean to see them? Marta S. To some the aura is something they can perceive, but like all things spiritual, you have to work with them. I do have an aura workshop, and most of my students have been able to see aura as a result, as for how far they take that, it is a personal choice. Try lighting a plain white wax( not paraffin) candle in a totally dark room with no other form of illumination whatsoever. If you have a white wall or a sheet of white paper behind the candle it helps. Look only at the base of the actual flame, and just above the wick you will see bands of colour, maybe only one, but there are seven in total. When you can identify these colours you will start to feel the aura, and see it.

Suspected Ebola case in Valencia

A PATIENT was admitted to the La Fe hospital in Valencia on Monday evening with a suspected case of the lethal Ebola virus. The man had arrived on a flight from Africa. Health workers at the hospital including ambulance attendants, drivers and orderlies were required to wear protective suits while in contact with the patient. Doctors have confirmed they are waiting for test results, while the victim is described as “clinically stable.” Sources revealed that the man was admitted to the hospital via a loading door as an alternative to the main emergency entrance in an effort to limit exposure. There is no vaccine against the virus and no known treatment for those infected. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation) from the onset of the Ebola outbreak in March, 528 patients have been diagnosed, 337 of whom have died.

Don’t mess with the Mouse!

BACK IN January this year children’s channel CITV had an Old Skool weekend in which they featured an episode of ‘Danger Mouse’, and amazingly 569,000 viewers tuned in to watch the rodent spy and his faithful companion Penfold set about ridding the world of baddies like Baron Greenback. Oh yes, and that incredible number of viewers made the show the most watched programme…ever!

Danger Mouse ran for 161 episodes from 1981-1992, and I for one missed very few of them, moving mountains to be sure I was sat sitting in front of the box ready to enjoy the tongue in cheek eye-patched spy wonderfully voiced by the then unknown David Jason.

But this is not just about me being nostalgic, as the news is that the show is set to return next year on CBBC with the station saying they plan to “…win over a whole new generation of fans.” Tracking back to those 569,000 viewers, I fancy that this number was not entirely made up of kids, so chances are folks like me will be as eager as anyone to find out when the first show is to be aired.

Having said all of that, with ´Sir´ David Jason committed to voicing a character in new Channel 5 cartoon series ‘Pip Ahoy!’ the gambling world have now moved in and are offering odds of 5/1 that Stephen Fry will get the Danger Mouse job, with Russell Brand at 6/1 and David Walliams at 10/1.

CBBC assure us that, although the series is set to undergo a 21st century makeover with DM sporting an ‘i-patch’ instead of an‘eye-patch’ and having state of the art wizardry at his disposal he will be as recognisable as ever. This had better be the case or they will have ‘Angryman from Spain’ to deal with.

I’M SURE church bells rang out across the land when we it was announced that Louis Walsh was again to be an X-Factory judge, but already in fine ‘Lame Louis’ style he has stuck his foot in it. He’s only revealed that the bitchiness on offer between Mel B and Cheryl Cole is not going to happen. At the first round of auditions Louis said, “the girls are getting on like long-lost pals!” Idiot!

I AM pleased to tell you that ´The Inbetweeners Movie 2´ is almost upon us so you can start getting your chuckle muscles warmed up as the film goes on release in five weeks and a new trailer is now available to see on the internet. Interestingly writers Damon Beesley and Iain Morris said, “We’re especially happy as none of the jokes in the trailer are in the film.” Smart move is that!

I have always struggled with the massive payments made to the top earners in the movie business, but I am also aware that a lot of charity work from them does go unheard of. However, Leonardo DiCaprio (board member of WWF) has come above ground by telling the world that he has donated $7m to assist in protecting ocean wildlife. US President Obama is involved so let’s hope your master plan works Leo!

The orchestra in action

By Jack Troughton SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY Symphony Orchestra will fill the Church of San Bartolome in Javea Old Town with music on Monday evening (30th June) in aid of charity.

The orchestra has offered its services for free to the people of the town in aid of Todos Juntos Javea in a concert presented by Concerts Costa Blanca together with the charity and Javea town Hall and with the kind permission of the parish.

Conducting the 15-year-old orchestra is Robin Browning who made his debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and has gone on to work with an impressive array of musicians across Europe.

The programme includes works by Tchaikovsky, RimskyKorsakov, Dvorak, and Elgar, and ‘seated’ tickets are 15€ - ticket holders are asked to take their seats from 9.45pm before non-reserved ticket holders are allowed admission.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Formation of present action tense We started to look at gerunds, or “present participles” last week; that is the Spanish equivalent of words in English ending in – ing. We saw how simple they are to form, by changing the endings in a very uniform way. The – ar of the infinitive verb changes to – ando, and the –er and –ir infinitive endings change to – iendo.

These forms are used fairly extensively in Spanish, but are not nearly so common as the gerund is in English. In English we use “–ing” words to express many different things that are not possible in Spanish. For example we can talk about future events by saying “Tomorrow I’m playing tennis” or “What are you doing later?” This is impossible in Spanish. We have to say “Tomorrow I’m going to play tennis” (Mañana voy a jugar al tenis) or “What are you going to do later?” (¿Qué vas a hacer más tarde?).

In English we can also use gerunds to describe activities, for example “I go to swimming lessons”. In Spanish this would be “Voy a clases de natación”. Another example is the use of the gerund in English after “I like” – as in “I like visiting the family” or “I don’t like watching horror films”.

After “me gusta” and related forms in Spanish we use the infinitive of the verb. “Me gusta visitar a la familia”, “No me gusta ver películas de terror”.

So, we can definitely say that in Spanish the gerund has much more limited uses, so we need to be careful not to translate too literally.

Probably the most common use of this form in Spanish is to combine it with the verb estar to talk about activities at the present moment in time. For example, if you phone someone up on their mobile phone, you might say to them: “What are you doing?” In that question you are enquiring about exactly what their actions are at that specific moment.

They might reply “I’m cleaning the kitchen” or “I’m having a drink with a friend”. In the context, the use of the gerund or present participle is exactly the same as it is in English.

So, to create the same meaning we need the equivalent of “I am” and “you are” etc. and for this we use the verb estar. Here is the verb

Estoy - (I am), Estás - (you are – familiar singular) Está - (he is, she is, it is, you are – formal singular) Estamos - (we are) Estáis - (you are – informal plural) Están - (they are, you are – formal plural)

Now we can simply combine the appropriate form of estar with the gerund of our verb to make a meaningful sentence, referring to actions in the present moment.

Here’s what I’m doing now.

Estoy escribiendo un artículo.

Estoy tomando un té.

Estoy escuchando la lluvia.

Estoy pensando. ¿Qué estás haciendo? What are you doing?

Now here is what my friends and family are doing (I assume, although I haven’t phoned them to find out).

Mi madre está haciendo las compras.

Mi gata está comiendo.

Mi hermana está trabajando.

Mis hijas están estudiando.

Now you have some fairly obvious homework – at any moment you can think about how to say in Spanish what you and the people round you are doing!

Next week we will look at just a few irregular gerunds, but don’t worry, there aren’t many!

AN EXHIBITION of drawings and paintings by Antonio Gilabert may be viewed in Ondara’s Exhibition Hall in the Casa de Cultura in the town until 28th June.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by Ondara Councillor Pilar Fornes, curator and art therapist Isabel Soler, art association members and family and friends of the artist. Some of the drawings exhibited were created during a period of admission in Denia Hospital, reflecting the therapeutic effect of art during recovery from illness.

The exhibition was organised by the Department of Social Services and the Amada charity group that helps people suffering with mental illness.

Putting on the glitz

By Jack Troughton GLAMOROUS SUMMMER clothes from Boutique Carole were the highlight of an enjoyable lunch and fashion show helping raise over 1,200€ for the Lions of Calpe and Benissa. Restaurante Puerto Blanco hosted the annual event and around 115 people enjoyed the meal, applauded the volunteer models, and bought raffle tickets. The Lions applauded the total raised at the charity event and said the money would be used to support Caritas in both Calpe and Benissa and Calpe Town Hall’s food bank.

And not to your new account, hence why it is saying you have no credit on your new account.

If you know which email address your old account was set up on, you can request a new password to try and access that old account: https://login.skype.com/ recovery Once in the account you can use it and use the credits in there, and you should also be able to cancel the payments. Failing that, then it is persistent emails to Skype to sort it out.

Is this eBay email genuine?

I RECENTLY received an email, supposedly from eBay, suggesting that I should change my password, as eBay had been hacked. Bearing in mind the amount of scams that are about, I am unsure as to whether this is a genuine email or not. Have you any info on it please? Thank you. Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio

I am not a slow player. But I know someone who is!!

By Tony Myles THERE ARE issues which beset many sports such as racism in football, drug taking in athletics, ball tampering in cricket and in golf the main cause of controversy and the most frequently debated issue is - slow play!

For non-golfers this might seem trivial as the purpose of playing golf is to enjoy the open air, the exercise and the competition.

So if you have an occasional game which takes longer than normal, what is the problem?

Well it would appear that the problems are numerous. Campbell and I have discussed this on Bay Radio last year and invited comments and suggestions. Almost without exception everyone is prepared to offer an opinion.

Most also proffer solutions.

However, nobody ever admits to being guilty as it is akin to admitting being a bad driver. “What! Surely you can’t mean me?!”

In fact if you actually accuse someone of being a slow player better stand well clear because the protestations will be fierce.

What many golfers fail to appreciate is that there are several elements which contribute to a slow round of golf not merely the act of taking a long time to play your shot.

READY GOLF The multiplication factor is one that is so often ignored.

If you wait while one of your party goes through the same set-up routine prior to every shot, and that routine takes a few seconds, for an 18 hole round with 80 shots that means that the other players in that group spend several additional minutes just standing and waiting.

Nobody would deny the need to approach each shot with full concentration but in many cases the preparatory swings and lining-up can be done whilst another player is taking his turn. This is why many societies and clubs now request that the olde worlde tradition of always waiting for the furthest away player to take his shot is now substituted with “Ready Golf”. This means that as soon as you reach your ball, and provided it is safe to do so, each golfer should play with no delay.

There is also a major difference between slow play and inconsiderate play.

TIME CRITICAL During the Golf Show on Bay Radio last Saturday we received a full in-box with recommendations and remedies and one of the most frequent suggestions was that the courses themselves should exercise some strict control over the pace of play and should enforce a rule that requires groups to complete a certain number of holes within a reasonable timeframe, or be prepared to step aside.

Is there a course in Spain that does that?

The other common complaint was the lack of etiquette which would compel slower players to wave through a faster group. Many callers and writers even suggested that this was a concept that was unknown in Spain and therefore it would never happen voluntarily. The implication being that ex-pats are filled with the milk of human kindness and will happily call a group behind us to play through.

Really? Do you know people who do that??

This is a subject that will be aired again and again as there is no simple solution - unless you know of one!

Peugeot Partner DELIVERY DRIVERS are a misunderstood breed.

Imagine what their lives must be like with a never-ending list of deliveries to make to various locations within a set time frame. This is only set to increase as online shopping becomes ever more popular. So remember this demanding schedule when one pulls out in front of you without indicating.

What do these drivers do when they can’t get there on time because of snow, for instance?

Simple - often appointments are missed and rescheduled at the customer’s inconvenience in my experience, with no apology and certainly no compensation. This unhelpful and all too regular scenario is sure to have arisen many times over the

recent inclement weather. Wouldn’t it therefore be helpful if there was a van that could handle the snow and ice? A van that is ideal for those remote parts of England or even the Highlands of Scotland…

Well, I am pleased to report that there is in the form of the new Peugeot Partner all-terrain van, which is fitted with an indispensable grip control.

This dial found to the left of the steering wheel allows the driver to select the appropriate mode for the conditions and responds accordingly. But I notice that this grip control falls back to its original setting when the engine is switched off so the driver needs to remember this when they set off again. My test takes place as Britain emerges from heavy snowfall and rain turns to ice. Needless to say that it remains in ice and snow mode for the duration of the test.

There’s also an ASR (anti-slip regulation) providing further surefootedness as you can see in the video at testdrives. biz. It makes light work of

manoeuvring out of an ice covered car park while other vehicles remain stranded. With its extra 10mm height over a normal Partner van the driver of this all-terrain model enjoys a good view of the road ahead. It feels competent on the motorway with only a mere hint of buffeting. The upgraded 195/70 R15 tyres, specifically for mud and snow, give the driver added confidence that they will make their deliveries on time.
