The measure was adopted by the city of Cartagena to ensure the safety of the occupants. The measure was taken based on the reports prepared by the Technical Infrastructure and Urbanism after they had inspected the area after the fall of a large rock on Tuesday July 1st. In addition there have been consultations with the Department of Mining Engineering, Geological and Cartographic the Polytechnic University of Cartagena indicating that a landslide was possible before measures could be taken to attach screens to the area to protect the zone. The decree also provides for a new fenced area to impede pedestrian traffic.
Cartagena’s Councillor for the Department of Infrastructure and Planning indicated that this is only a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the safety of the house occupants while the City is already working on a study of technical solutions to allow residents to return as soon as possible. According to the council, advice and a solution to the problem must come from external technical assistance to the City Council because their staff lack specialists in mountain structure improvements. The Councillor of Neighbourhood Relations, Florentina Garcia Vargas, informed both the President of the Neighbourhood Area and the President of the Neighborhood Asocación The Portús, of the decision.
