Shabu is a pure-state methamphetamine that has become known as ‘the drug of the poor’: it is highly addictive and entails serious dangers. The agents of the Drug Unit and Organized Crime (Udyco) arrested 42 alleged members of two organizations, five of them in Murcia, and seized eight kilos of the substance. The five arrested in Murcia were all residents of the village of El Palmar, Murcia and include, according to police sources, some of the alleged ringleaders of one of these networks, who are responsible for the introduction of the drug in Spain. Of the five arrested in Murcia, two are Spaniards and three African, from Mali and Senegal. The Eight kilos of ‘shabu’ seized in this operation is one of the largest seizures of the drug in Spain. The agents raided 24 houses, two stores and a storage room in Madrid, Murcia and Barcelona. Of these, four homes in the region were in El Palmar, where extensive documentation of the gang. The

Several of the alleged leaders of this organization are among the five arrested in Murcia. Those arrested, of whom 22 were sent directly to prison, are from the Philippines, Mali, Togo, Senegal and Spain. The police searched 24 houses, a store room and two bars that were allegedly used to launder drug money. They have seized 15,000 euros in cash, real and several simulated handgun, scales, pipes intended to inhale the drug and several vehicles. The National Police research into the trafficking began in July last year. The National Police managed to locate their first suspects in the Chamberi district of Madrid, run by people of Filipino nationality, who were engaged to market the substance. From this initial finding, the police began to put together the case and it has taken them just nine months to succeed in breaking the lower echelons of this network.
