Lorente temporarily resigns by Keith Nicol

Enjoying St Patrick’s Day

Cabo Roig turns green By Keith Nicol The fourth Cabo Roig St. Patrick’s Day Parade attracted upwards of 8,000 on Monday. With the sun splitting the heavens, it seemed like Saint Pat was certainly smiling upon us and spectators were treated to a feast of colour, good humour, song, dance and music, in what has become one of the Orihuela Costa’s most popular events. Read the full story on page 16.

THE FORMER Mayor of Orihuela, Monica Lorente has temporally resigned from her post as part of the Alicante Provincial council ahead of her trial for allegedly falsifying documents. At stake is a fine of 4,500€ plus she faces suspension of up to ten months of being allowed to hold a position in public office. Although there was a possibility of Lorente not facing trial until August, on Wednesday the date was set for May 29th to face alleged irregularities in the handling of the work contracts to reform Plaza Escorratel. Monica Lorente met on Wednesday with Luisa Pastor who accepted her ‘temporary’ resignation. Lorente’s case goes back to March 2009, when she was denounced by the Greens, who were then in opposition to the PP government of Orihuela. The complaint did not change her position as leader of her party and although she has

stepped aside to allow Pepa Ferrando to take over leadership, she too has come under fire and has to face her own court charges. Just a week ago, Ferrando, the local party president, was also called to appear in court on account of irregularities of submitted invoices made when attending the Madrid Tourism fair Fitur, from when she headed the Department of Tourism. The Partido Popular have blamed these legal objections on a “search and destroy operation” to make it as difficult as possible for the majority PP to wrestle power from the minority Green and PSOE coalition in Orihuela. This is not the first time in her long political career that Lorente has faced court charges. However, in doing the simple math, if found guilty on these most recent charges, after sitting out a possible maximum ten months of not holding a post in government, she should still be eligible to be included on the list of Partido Popular candidates for the projected page 34 May 2015See Spanish elections.
