Couple cons charities
TWO HEARTLESS “chancers” are accused of riding a Costa Blanca gravy train by pocketing handouts after feeding charities a hard luck story. by Jack Troughton TWO HEARTLESS “chancers” are accused of riding a Costa Blanca gravy train by pocketing handouts after feeding charities a hard luck story. John Williams and Mary Powell allegedly fleeced both the MABS Cancer Support Group and HELP International Benidorm claiming they were penniless and unable to get home. However, they were rumbled in a classic sting operation set up by MABS’ Sue Ruela and her son Ray when he posed as another charity representative willing to help - and were confronted as they poured out their sob story. “I told them they were not welcome in Benidorm and suggested they ply their trade somewhere else,” Sue told RTN. “I said get out of Benidorm because we don’t want their sort here. “I have heard of neither hide nor hair of them since but they could still be here.” And Sue warned people that if they were still in the area the pair would rehearse the same story to get money – but believes once funds dried up, Williams and Powell would move on to another target. She explained the couple came to MABS for help, Williams claiming they had run out of

money, were sleeping rough and he suffered prostate cancer and diabetes and was unable to get medication. The pair, who gave addresses in Essex, maintained they had come to Spain because their daughter Katrina was in hospital in a coma after a car accident – but were desperate to get back to the UK because she had been transferred to a hospital in Liverpool. At different times talking to different people, the story changed. They also claimed to have been robbed and were waiting for
money and 53-year-old Williams was scared of flying – ruling out the cheaper option of flying home, although in another version he said they were waiting for money for flights. Sue was able to get medicines and gave the “homeless and desperate” couple 50€ for food. HELP later donated 320€ for a coach ticket back to England and MABS contributed a further 30€ for food during the journey. Sue explained they had to trust Williams and Powell, 54, would take the bus from Alicante
because to book the ticket over the ‘phone incurred a prohibitive administration charge. But days later a lady who was owed money for rent by the pair telephoned Sue to say the couple was still in Benidorm – they had returned to leave the woman a begging letter. It prompted Sue to begin investigating the story further. She rang hospitals only to find there was no record of a Katrina Williams or Katrina Powell – the couple variously claimed to be married or just partners. Continued on page 3

Hundreds walk for heroes
by Jack Troughton BENIDORM’S ‘WALK of Honour’ was cheered and clapped down the Poniente Beach as around 1,000 people took part to pay their respects to murdered Drummer Lee Rigby and show solidarity with British servicemen and women. The parade was led by the standards of the Royal British Legion branches of Benidorm and Torrevieja and a lone piper. The beach promenade was filled with walkers carrying Union Jacks and the red and white cross of the flag of St George as the parade progressed. Everyone had been invited to wear red, white and blue “with pride”. People also carried photographs of 26year-old Lee Rigby in full dress uniform – killed two weeks earlier on the streets of Woolwich in south East London. And as the parade halted outside bars
popular with British visitors – allowing the tail to catch up – drinkers gave the walkers a standing ovation and shouted their support. It also allowed volunteers carrying collection buckets asking for donations to collect cash to be given to Help for Heroes, the charity supporting wounded soldiers. PRAYER At the end of hour and a half walk at the Old Town end of the beach, the standards and banners were lowered before Lorna Gibbs, who served in the RAF, read ‘A Soldier’s Prayer’. A minute’s silence was then staged in memory of Lee. An air horn sounded the end of the time to cheers and a final swirl of the pipes. One of the walk’s organisers, Mike Burgess – who first suggested staging a

parade to honour the drummer and British Armed Forces – told RTN: “I think we easily have 1,000 people here today. We only started asking people for support seven days ago, so this is an absolutely fantastic turn out.” And speaking to the crowd through a loud hailer, he said: “Thank you for taking part in the first ever Benidorm Walk With honour. Thank you to each and every one of you who has participated today – your help is very much appreciated. “We have been given figures of 1,000 people here today – that is five times the numbers we expected when we first started organising this.” And Chris Cooke – along with Tricia Devesa-Rhodes making up the three original organisers – said: “Thanks for coming. It has been an emotional day for all of us but a great cause; I think you will all agree!”

Continued from front page THE PAIR could receive text messages so Sue and Ray arranged the meeting to expose Williams and Powell, tempting them to a Benidorm bar with the message “I understand you need help?” “Ray introduced himself and asked what he could do. They said they had been in touch with MABS and other charities but they didn’t get any money and didn’t get help and they were desperate and just needed to get back to the UK,” said Sue. “I left them for about 10 minutes and walked up and asked what all the nonsense was about. Williams jumped up and tried to run away but I told him to sit down. “Ray repeated the story he had been told by the pair. Suddenly there was another daughter and they told me they did not get on the bus because the British Consulate advised them to wait because consulate staff had been in contact with their bank and it was sending money – I telephoned the consul and this conversation never took place.” However, the Consulate suggested the couple go to Alicante the next morning and staff would try to help. Williams and Powell failed to turn up. “I had a text the next morning saying ‘we are not conmen’, a claim he repeated in a later ‘phone call,” said Sue. “I think they are a pair of chancers just travelling through but they were still trying to get money from people around Benidorm Indoor Market with the same story – Williams is a very good actor.” However, she said the scam had made her very cross. “The thing that is very annoying is charities have to work extra hard to make money during the crisis so to have them used by conmen and women is a crying shame.” And Jan Elders, President of HELP international, said: “I know things are difficult for many people, but to make up such a story and to take money from a small local charity is really despicable!”

New British Consulate office opens to the public
The new reception area inside the British Consulate
by Keith Nicol ALICANTE’S BRITISH Consulate office made the move last month to new premises on Rambla Méndez Núñez 28-30. The new purposely designed offices have eight staff members offering all sorts of advice and support for British Nationals with the new office being seen as the Foreign Office as a model for future design options around the world. The Consulate in Alicante is already offering consular support British nationals in cases ranging from serious detentions to stolen passports and welfare cases. The telephone number is 965 216 022 but before calling or visiting the Consulate, a wealth of useful information can be found on the website www.gov.uk/world/spain. With the move, the office is attempting to become as paperless as possible, with the majority of information available online and with all UK Passports now being issued out of Belfast, the majority of visitors are generally those who need a Temporary Passport, which can be provided, usually within an hour. Those who need to visit can find the consular offices on “La Rambla” in Alicante. The address is Rambla Méndez Núñez 28-32, on the sixth floor. The British Consul Paul Rodwell said, “Feedback from British nationals has been overwhelmingly positive. My team worked very hard to make this move happen and I am confident that we can now offer better support to vulnerable British nationals who need our assistance. To illustrate just how busy they are, annually
the Alicante office deals with more than 2,500 assistant cases, placing them at number one slot in the world! They produce in excess of 1,200 Emergency Passports and Travel Documents, offer help and advice to almost 600 prison detainees plus last year offered help and advice to 580 bereaved families, placing them at number two in the worldwide scheme of things! Alicante has a catchment area of 167,000 British Nationals who are on the municipal Pardon, accounting for 42% of all those registered in Spain, while at least the same number again, own homes in the area, but are not on the Padron. Each year the region receives more than 3.5 million tourists and the message that comes from the staff is to make sure you take out travel insurance to cover you during your stay in Spain, or wherever you plan to travel around the world. The new offices are designed to enhance the customer service experience, as the new building offers better access, especially for those in wheelchairs or disabled, a dedicated office space, more natural light, comfortable seating area, special meeting rooms, while the entire building is more secure, both regarding entry to, and for its IT system. For those that need to visit the Consulate, working hours are from 8.30am to 1.30pm weekdays, although staff are on call 24/7 in case of an emergency. Their new location is only a couple of minutes walk from Alicante’s Marina, with municipal parking located less than two minutes away. Today, Friday 7 June 2013, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman, will be coming to Alicante to officially open the office.
Spain faces possible fines over EHIC row
THE EUROPEAN Commission is considering legal action against Spain over its refusal to recognise the validity of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The card has reportedly been refused in a number of hospitals throughout Spain despite the card guaranteeing cardholders free healthcare within the EU. The commission claims that hospitals in Spain instead advise cardholders to claim the cost of their care from their travel insurers.
Blesa back in jail MIGUEL BLESA, the former chairman of Caja Madrid, has been ordered back to prison as legal investigations into Spain’s epic banking losses intensify. 65-year-old Blesa was ordered by Judge Elpidio-Jose Silva to be detained without bail, according to a spokesman for the Madrid regional court. Blesa spent one night in Madrid’s Soto del Real jail in May but was then released on bail of €2.5million. Blesa’s lawyer, Carlos Aguilar, was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
Planning a community’s future by Jack Troughton PARCENT RESIDENTS are invited to take part in a “workshop” meeting tomorrow evening (Saturday 15th June) to have a voice in the future of the community. They are being asked for their “vision” for the village in a public participation exercise that will lead to a new General Plan for Parcent. The meeting starts at 6.30pm in The Musical in Parcent – English speakers are asked to attend 30 minutes earlier – and interpreters will be available. And everyone will be asked to fill in a questionnaire asking people their opinion of the village, its merits and failings and their own “future vision”. Written submissions can be made for another month. The meeting is aimed at producing an environmental sustainability report and it is felt important to know the views of residents as part of the process. The current Democratic Coalition Party town hall team was first elected in 2007 after promising to halt the construction of thou-
sands of home that threatened to swamp the village and surrounding countryside. The development was later stopped. GROWTH Deputy Mayor Jacqui Cotterill believes the consultation is an important process in gleaning individual villagers’ views on how the community should grow. “It is part of the process of drawing up the General Plan and an opportunity for residents of Parcent to give their opinion as to how they would like to see their village in the future,” she said. “The draft was done about 18 months ago and at that point people could come and have appointments and have an individual consultation on specific areas of the village and the impact of developing certain areas.” Jacqui said it was hoped the workshop session would enable people to “debate ideas in small groups” and at the end examine suggestions that arose during the meeting. And while councillors will be present, they will not be there in any political role but simply as members of the community.
Joan Collins in Benidorm
JOAN COLLINS made her usual impressive entrance this week prior to joining the cast of popular sitcom ‘Benidorm’ in the sixth series of the show due to air next September. Ms Collins takes the role of ‘Crystal’, the new nemesis of hotel manager Joyce Temple-Savage, played by Sherrie Hewson. The popular 80-year-old star’s appearance caused quite a stir in Avenida Derramador at the heart of the ‘foreigner zone’, where police had to extend their usual cordon to accommodate hoards of onlookers.

Biker Babes rev up appeal
Monster landed
By Jack Troughton JAWS DROPPED at the size of a shark which landed at Javea last week after the appearance of the 12-feet-long fish sparked alerts at sea. Speculation grew as to the breed of the monster from the deep as social networks took the bait and debated whether it was a harmless basking shark or something more sinister. Estimated to weigh around 1,000kg, it is understood the animal was a Bluntnose Sixgill Shark which normally inhabits waters more than 90 metres deep and has been recorded at depths of over 1,800 metres. Also known as the ‘Cow Shark’, it is understood it was caught in the nets of a Denia fishing boat, released from the trawl and was later seen off Javea. However, police boats patrolling the bay discovered the fish was dying. Despite its size, the shark – common in the Mediterranean - is not thought a ‘man eater’ but instead mainly dines on carrion, molluscs, and other fish. Said to be ‘sluggish’ by nature, it rises from the depths at night in search of a meal.
A Harley ride out
by Jack Troughton THE BAY Radio ‘Biker Babes’ have raised 7,000€ for a children’s charity ahead of the Harley Fun Day Spectacular in Albir on Sunday. The radio station appealed for ladies wanting a privileged seat on the pillion of a gleaming Harley Davidson motorcycle during the day’s official ‘ride out’ from Albir, through Alfaz del Pi and along the Poniente Beach in Benidorm. To be selected they had to pledge to raise 100€ each in sponsorship – a minimum total of 2,000€ - so organiser Peter Emmett is delighted his girls will be able to present such a huge sum to the
charity Children of EMAUS. “I am absolutely gobsmacked,” he admitted. “I am delighted to report that the 20 Biker Babes have in fact raised the staggering sum of 7,000€ to date. “We have even had a presentation cheque made in the shape of a Harley Davidson that will be presented to EMAUS President Montse Fitur on stage during the day.” FAMILY The Harley Fun Day starts at 9.30am at the Eucalyptus Park in Albir and promises to be fun for all the family with trade stands, entertainment, live music, refreshments – and hundreds of Harley
Davidson bikes. The park itself is off Avenida Oscar Espla but the road outside will be cordoned off to park motorbikes involved in the fun day. Visitors should follow ‘motos’ signs from the N322 and will be guided to parking near the venue. The ride out itself is set to start at around 11.15am and once again is expected to be a stunning sight as the procession of powerful machines makes its way to Benidorm. Peter said everyone was guaranteed a very warm welcome at the fun day. “All that we now require is sunshine on Sunday and a determination to party and make the Harley Fun Day a memorable occasion.”

No casualties in Torrevieja city centre fire
by Keith Nicol ON WEDNESDAY evening at about 8.00pm there was a fire in the centre of Torrevieja in an apartment located on the second floor of calle Canónigo Torres, number 24, opposite the Central Market ‘La Plasa’. Apparently the fire was caused when a lit candle fell on a pillow. The apartment was occupied at the time by a South American couple with Spanish nationality and their young daughter with the consequence of combustion of the pillow being an abundance of smoke, which forced the evacuation of the building. Six firemen from two crews from Torrevieja’s Fire Station quelled the fire, which was also attended by Local Police and
No more pot growing for cash THE SMALL farming community of Rasquera in North Eastern Spain that hit the news last year due to its plans to grow Cannabis for cash to pay off its municipal debt of €1.3 million has encountered a problem: a Spanish judge has ruled that their cultivation plans are illegal. The law in Spain permits cultivation for Cannabis for private use. However, Rasquera plans to sell its harvest to a Barcelonabased pot-smoking group called ABCDA which agreed to pay more than 1,000,000€ over two years. Rasquera argues that ABCDA uses the Cannabis for the consumption of its ‘private’ members therefore falls within the law. The council has announced that it will appeal against the court’s decision.

Local Blue flags presented in Benissa Blue ‘Q’ for Quality Flags awarded to the beaches of the Costa Blanca
by Keith Nicol TORREVIEJA, ORIHUELA and other coastal councils attended a ceremony in Benissa on Wednesday to collect their new Blue Flags, which will adorn beaches this summer. Torrevieja’s flags will be flown from Tuesday 11th June 2013, proclaiming that the brand certifications ‘Q’ for Quality has been awarded by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade to the beaches of Los Náufragos, El Cura, Cabo Cervera and Cala Piteras. This year Torrevieja also renewed their ISO-9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environmental Management by the Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification (AENOR), and certificates Qualitur of the Valencian Agency of Tourism, which demonstrate the quality of the beaches of Playas de La Mata, Cabo Cervera, Los Locos, El Cura, Los Náufragos and Cala Piteras. Torrevieja’s new Councillor for Beaches, Francisco Moreno, was in Benissa to collect the five blue flags awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the Blue Flags for 2013. The Councillor of Beaches and Environment also took the opportunity to highlight the Blue Flag awarded to the central beach of Playa del Cura, and congratulated the Real Club
Nautico de Torrevieja (RCNT) and the International Marina, who also renewed their Blue flags. The ‘Blue Flag is an international distinctive symbol that rewards compliance with established standards such as accessibility, water quality, environmental conditions, the excellence of the services provided to its users, and respect for the law. Francisco Moreno also pointed out the great economic efforts that the city of Torrevieja takes towards the care, cleaning and maintenance of the beaches of Torrevieja, 365 days a year. He added that “this shows the quality of bathing areas of the city and not just in relation to the quality of its waters, but also other aspects, which year after year attract hundreds of thousands of people from around the world.” The criteria for awarding the Blue Flag is reviewed periodically and each year becomes more demanding. The beaches should have emergency plans to deal with accidents and environmental disasters, and at least one of the beaches of the municipality must have access ramps to the beach and restrooms for persons with disabilities, as well as proper maintenance and beach services. The beaches of Orihuela also received seven
blue flags awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) this year. Specifically, for the beaches at Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cala Capitán, Cabo Roig, La Glea (Campoamor) and Barranco Rubio. The marina of Cabo Roig has also won this award that certifies the quality of services and the natural environment.
New biodegradable packaging made in Spain SPANISH RETAIL and wholesale skincare company Germaine de Capuccini unveiled the first biodegradable packaging for beauty products in Alcoy on Monday. The material is made from renewable resources - corn starch and sugar beet - and becomes organic matter in less than six months, replacing traditionally used plastic tubing. The flexible container protects the contents from moisture and also preserves its aroma for up to three years. The prototype, unveiled yesterday, is manufactured from materials from renewable sources, particularly corn starch, and sugar beet. Initially the packaging will be used for a range of natural beauty products including sunscreen and a multi-protection face cream made from white tea.

Ill-conceived law I FELT I had to write to make other readers aware that the Asset Declaration is not ‘for information purposes only’. My partner came to live in Spain in 2009 after living in the same house in the UK from 1997 until 2009 and on other occasions until he sold it in 2013. As he followed all the Spanish rules he became a resident here and he subsequently made the Asset Declaration in January this year. When he returned to the accountant in April 2013 to sign the form he advised the accountant that he had sold this house and was informed that he would have a Capital Gains Tax liability at the end of 2013 of approximately 30,000 euros here in Spain. You can imagine our horror - this law has just been introduced and the CGT calculation is not taking into account any improvement done to the property and the time that my partner was not living in Spain, i.e. 1997 to 2009, which was the time when his property increased in value. Apparently his house in the UK is considered ‘a 2nd home’ although he doesn’t own one in Spain. If there is any liability it should be from the time he moved to Spain and not retrospectively - he would be prepared to pay any CGT for that period. We have taken advice from two other accountants and
they have both concurred with our accountant. He has never taken anything from Spain and being a pensioner not even had a SIP card. He brought over a sum of money which was used to extend my house so has invested a great deal of money in Spain already. On principle, the only option we have is to return to the UK which we are doing in the next couple of weeks and probably won’t return until this law is reviewed. This law is ill conceived. It is biting the hand that feeds them - ex-pats - pensioners with disposable income. We are ordinary people living on a pension. When we visited our town councillors they still believed this law was for information only and were advising locals of this fact. After outlining our case they have made further investigation and are planning to go to Madrid to discuss this issue. We would be interested in any other people who are in the same situation – we have registered on the petition http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/ spains-asset-declaration-laws-en.html and would advise all ex-pats of any nation to do the same. Javea council have already made a case regarding this law. Disillusioned Ex-Pats (Name withheld but please email via RTN if you have any information which may help us).
Pressure
I AM a disabled person with Motor Neurone and have moved into a small villa on Villotel, Moraira. After we moved in we soon found that the water pressure was so low we could not use the gas central heating and Combi-boiler. We have had an engineer to visit who said we need a tank and pump but do not feel it is our responsibility to fund this system. My question is: is there a set minimum pressure the water company should provide? Kelvin Toms
Daylight robbery! OUR VILLA has been broken into twice! A third robbery took place at noon in broad daylight in the office of my socalled tax advisor! As a UK pensioner and a fiscal resident in Spain I am required to pay tax in the UK and also in Spain. The Spanish tax bill for year 2011 was for 1.04€; the tax bill for 2012 was 1.07€; the tax bill for 2013, I am informed, will be 600€! Pure unabashed daylight robbery! Was I robbed or was I robbed?! So much for trying to be legal in Spain! What with the Modelo720 worldwide assets declaration, the EPC certificate and now this huge tax hike, the dream is
now a nightmare. Their loss - because for me it’s: Adios Spain! The dream that once was Spain The Costa Blanca in the main The euro all are going down the drain We even saw the rain on the plain but now after many years we are unable to take the strain Thus we no longer wish to reside in Spain So we are going to the UK to revel in the rain and to experience more financial pain. Martyn, La Marina Urb
Praise for Ryanair WITH REGARD to the letter last week and Silvia Pearson (Edition 711) I can only speak as I find but must speak up for Ryanair (I know not many do!) My mother-in-law has travelled with Easy jet and Ryanair and needs a wheelchair to get on and off the plane: both companies have always been helpful and polite and she has nothing but praise for Ryanair and we did not find a problem at all booking the chair on-line.
Did I say ‘relax?’ I’VE LIVED most of my life working both ‘cards in’ and selfemployed in England. Due to injury my working days were cut short so I decided to come to Spain for the weather and the ‘relaxed’ way of life with my hard-earned savings and pension. Did I say ‘relax?’ I now find I must declare my savings etc. which I earned in England. What on earth has this got to do with Spain!? Surely this must contravene my human rights - or do they have them in Spain? – Probably not! I am totally ‘up to here with it’. The question is: what is this information to be used for? Surely people have a right to an honest answer! To put all this in perspective, my thoroughly hard-earned savings at 69 years of age doesn’t amount to one third of a Premier League Football Player’s wage for one week! Will we get a Cyprus-style haircut of a one-off levy? What will it be? If anybody thinks they are going to do nothing, they must be naive in the extreme. Are there any informed, knowledgeable people out there who really know? Norman, Alicante

Torrevieja and Orihuela students take to the Market
School students from both will be at the market this Friday
by Keith Nicol REGULAR VISITORS to Torrevieja’s market, Spain’s largest Friday market, may be surprised to see school students from both Torrevieja’s IES Mare Nostrum and Orihuela’s IES El Palmeral de Orihuela selling goods there today. It’s all part of a new initiative to give students real ‘life’ skills in entrepreneurship, business and selling. On Wednesday, Torrevieja’s Councillors for Education, Rosario Martínez Chazarra and for Markets, Lola Sanchez Roca, said that after meeting with teachers of both schools that they had reached an agreement for them to have a space in Torrevieja’s market starting from today, Friday 7 June, in order to allow students the opportunity to develop the studies for their final course in Cooperative Marketing. This is a course that students have been studying throughout the year, which is part of the AXIS project (European Young Enterprise), consisting of the creation of a company by a group of students from each school, in a program at European level, as an initiative of an Asturian public company called Valnalón. The Councillors for Education and Mar-
kets said that this project seeks to develop entrepreneurship from an early age and, as an alternative for a future career, students create their own business, managing all its aspects, and each cooperative student company is associated with another ‘mother’ company elsewhere in Spain. Students will have to to exchange products and actually practice the buying and selling of products, transport etc, provide balance sheets and then write and discuss with teachers , business centres and other students, how their projects are developing. This project involves a total of 64 students and five cooperatives called Big Smiles, Happy Shop, Sprak and Venyb, which are associated with IES El Palmeral de Orihuela, and from IES Mare Nostrum the Los Salerosos cooperative from the city of Torrevieja. Students will be accompanied at all times by different secondary school teachers to help oversee the project. As one of the busiest, Torrevieja Market is looked upon as an important point and outlet to publicize their activities along with promoting the course. The weekly market takes place on Fridays from 8:00am to 2:00pm with the students offering products from different parts of Spain.
Lost property IN THE little town of Brunete some 20 miles west of Madrid, the local council has taken a somewhat extreme stand against dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets. At the beginning of the year around 20 volunteers went on patrol to ascertain the names of dogs whose owners failed to ‘scoop the poop’. After identifying the owners’ names and addresses the council authorised the volunteers to scoop up ‘doggy doo’, parcel it up, stamp it with the town insignia and courier it back to the offending owners labelled: ‘Lost Property!’ A total of 147 ‘special deliveries’ were made in February resulting in a 70% decrease in the amount of dog mess on the town’s streets.
Court case against PP suspended by Keith Nicol IN WHAT has been seen by many PP supporters as nothing more than PSOE negative electioneering, the socialist party in Torrevieja denounced conservative PP members because they used the Municipal Theatre for a rally in May 2011, prior to the election, a building that was not supposed to be used for this purpose. However, the magistrate judge of the Court of Instruction No. 5 of Torrevieja, has ordered the suspension of the court case to give more time for the defendants. The case was scheduled for 6th and 7th June against seven councillors and former PP councillors, including the mayor, Eduardo Dolon, for allegedly committing an electoral offence. The court case was instigated by PSOE councillor, Antonio Ruiz due to the Partido Popular using the Municipal Theatre for a supporters rally, however
this facility was not offered in the catalogue of facilities outlined for electoral campaign areas for the local elections of 2011.The socialist councillor made a complaint against the mayor, Eduardo Dolon and councillors, Joaquín Albaladejo, Dolores Albaladejo, Francisco Moreno and Javier Montoro plus the former councillor, Maria Dolores Canales and former delegate José Manuel Pizana. The statements, which were scheduled for Thursday and Friday morning will be delayed until 14th June, when the defendants will receive the procedures, while the complainant must be ratified on 19th June. This time, the judge has also cited as a witness for the proceedings the Secretary General of the election, who will be asked to certify whether other parties also used the Theatre and other municipal facilities.

Watts In Britain By
Paul Watts
13
Once upon a long ago, a princess was crowned queen… TUESDAY IN the UK and the sun is out making a rare appearance. All over Britain glasses are being raised to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation. It’s all over the TV and radio networks and wallto-wall in the papers. Mark in Mercia Newsagents has provided loyal customers with some Union Jack cup cakes. He has also provided them with some of his usual wisdom. “We should’ve had a bank holiday,” he muses. And, you know, he is probably right; it’s going to be a bloomin’ long time till another monarch celebrates 60 years of service since being crowned. Love or loath the royals, you cannot deny that Liz Windsor has given this country continuous sterling service; well beyond the norm. And well beyond her retirement - she’s given an extra 27 years since picking up her bus pass. So Dave, would a bank holiday really have hurt? Those second-hand carpet salesmen Cameron and Clegg have blathered on about it being unnecessary time off and the attendant extra costs (hmmm, strange how they still attended the big nosh-up) and the continuous need for tightening our belts in these ‘blah, blah, blah we’re all in it together austere times...’ Mind you, as I wander out of Tesco with two packs of my favourite American lager for the price of just one I can only guess at what folks back in 1953 would think about our ‘austerity’. I guess there’d be no comparison and they’d probably say ‘you lot have never had it so good’. When Elizabeth the Second was crowned,
austerity meant austerity. It meant queuing twice around the block for a chunk of cheese. It meant no lager (warm beer was the only choice back then) and it certainly did not mean ‘buy one, get one free’. Austerity then meant having to carry a ration book for those luxuries of life, such as stewing steak. And it was a cash-only economy; none of your chip and pin, and pay it back next month or never. In fact, the only chips back then were the ones hewn from horrid blackpocked spuds and sold in the only example of a fast food outlet - the chippie! Silicone chips were years away. Austerity then meant not paying wads of your hardearned dosh into the hands of some greedy old Aussie for hundreds of banal TV channels. Oh no, back then one telly channel would be quite enough, thank you, if indeed you lived in the one in a thousand homes that could afford one. Back then at the start of the Queen’s reign it was radio that was the centre of the known living room and TV had made only modest inroads into the home. My workmate Roger was six on Coronation Day and he remembers watching the scenes from faraway London at home “on our little fifteen-inch screen black and white telly.” Presumably, set in a cabinet the size of a small country, eh Rog? And as his family’s telly was the only one in the whole street they ended up playing host to the entire urbanisation. “In fact,” grins Roger, “I spent most of the time being told to ‘fetch an-
other tea please lad.’” Well, it was a long, long time ago. How long Watts? Well, airplanes were propeller driven affairs that took days to reach anywhere; cars didn’t have sat-nav; most homes didn’t have a phone and if you were slightly cheeky at school you’d get your arse whacked. There were ‘Tardis’ boxes everywhere on the streets but no Dr Who (the police did something inside them). This was a time before The Beatles. Crumbs, it was even before Elvis! Paul McCartney was still in junior school and Ringo, who was the eldest Beatle, hadn’t even become a teenager (if that term had been around). The only ‘mop tops’ back then were functional ones that cleaned the floor. Looking on the grim side of things, rickets was still around and polio and tuberculosis roamed the land. Even a visit to the dentist could result in perfectly good teeth being wrenched out… On the other hand the good news was there was no Cameron or Clegg. Come to think of it Blair was only a few weeks old, so he was no real danger to the country. Anyway, getting back to modern times we didn’t have a bank holiday but most loyal subjects raised a glass and said “Good on ya Liz, you’ve done us proud.” As McCartney sings in the last line of the last ever Beatles album: “...Her Majesty’s a pretty nice girl and some day I’m gonna make her mine; oh yeah, some day I’m gonna make her mine.” Watts in Brum, wanting a bank holiday…

A sinking feeling
Having a ball
A seal had failed in the exhaust system allowing the sea to flood in
by Jack Troughton SWIFT ACTION prevented a valuable motor cruiser from joining Neptune under the waves on Saturday as crowds onshore enjoyed a ‘Festival of the Sea’. The ‘Fairline Squadron 65’ was moored in Javea Port when the vessel began to take on water and list heavily. Martin and Lesley Halliday were enjoying the festival when they noticed the boat beginning to sink – and hurried to the sea wall with a camera to capture the dra-
ma. Martin, who supplied RTN with the photographs, said: “Only the mooring ropes stopped it completely sinking and they were creaking and straining. “We walked round and watched the Javea lifeboat help out and a large crane arrived to stop it sinking further – and allow a pump to be put onboard.” He said it was understood a seal had failed in the exhaust system of the craft allowing the sea to flood in. The boat was later towed to the neighbouring town of Denia for boatyard repairs.
By Jack Troughton FUNDRAISING WENT with a swing at the Javea U3A May Ball with nearly 180 members enjoying a night out to remember at Salones Carrasco. The dance floor was packed thanks to music from DJ Eric Taylor and the everpopular live band Strikland. All money raised will go towards Javea U3A’s chosen charity this year, Caritas which helps support the homeless and unemployed in the crisis. U3A President Peter Allin – pictured dancing with his wife Lorraine – said: “It was a fantastic evening in aid of Caritas and thanks go to our events organiser Stephen Burke and his team for making it such a successful event, full of fun and enjoyed by all who attended it.”

THE SWINGING Sixties proved a popular theme for a Jalon Valley HELP fundraising dinner dance and shook up more than 1,200€ for the charity. With music by Freeway, 120 people enjoyed dancing to the sounds of peace and love – many dressing up to add a splash of colour. HELP President Elaine Horton presented a prize to Tony Barratt, winner of the best costume competition from three chosen finalists.

Quitting the habit with Fast Track Hypnosis SMOKING IS one of the most difficult habits to quit. One of the reasons for this is that we tend to view cigarettes as a ‘best friend’. But they’re not our pals! They’re our enemies! We all know that millions of deaths are caused by smoking related diseases but does that stop us from picking up a cigarette and lighting it? No. By Alan Gilchrist: Costa Blanca’s Top Hypnotherapist
I can help you stop smoking NOW! Yes, you read that correctly. I can help you stop in ONE simple 30 minute session! Hypnosis is a prolonged state of relaxation into which I induce clients before the real science comes into play. Suggestions are then implanted into the subconscious and when the client comes out of Hypnosis, the mind moves them into the active parts of the brain. Some lay dormant: these will remain there, lying in wait until you need them. Fast Track Hypnosis is a unique treatment, a technique I invented and proved on numerous TV programmes. Traditional hypnotherapy methods are condensed and manipulated into a speedier treatment. Speed is of the utmost importance - do you want to stop smoking now or next year?! Fast Track Hypnosis has already changed more than
50,000 peoples’ lives: why shouldn’t you be a part of that number? 30 MINUTES
There are hundreds of techniques to quit the habit including patches, inhalators, tablets, etc., most of which are costly and time consuming. Fast Track Hypnosis takes only thirty minutes to transform the way your mind views cigarettes and smoking. After the thirty minute session, you leave with a back-up CD that reinforces our work together - all included in the incredible one-off fee of only 95€. If you’re ready to free yourself from a destructive habit that has overtaken every aspect of your day and if you’re tired of smelling of stale smoke, call me today! At www. alangilchrist.com you will find dozens of testimonials, each detailing a client’s own personal success. One client writes: “I have waited this long to e-mail you
because I wanted to make sure that I had truly passed the stage of no return. Also my wife came to see you last August 2012 to help her lose weight and she has lost just over a stone. We would both like to say a very big thank you! For the amount we paid to see you we can honestly say you have saved us thousands!” Alan and his son Jonathan hold their Fast Track Hypnosis sessions in Cabo Roig, Guardarmar and Benidorm. Alan is also the Creator of the Stop Smoking in Under 30 minutes Fast Track System as featured and proven on TV. Jonathan also does sessions in Spanish as well as English. Feeding your plants - Part 1 by
Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Holistic gardeners and authors gardening in Spain for 25 years
THE NEEDS MOST GaRDEN soils and soil or potting/seed composts do not hold sufficient nutrients to enable plants to germinate, grow, mature and live healthily for years. Even if we inherit a perfect garden soil over the years it will often become impoverished in time by the demands of our emergent luxuriant flower gardens or by season after season of continuous vegetable growing. Plants therefore need to be fed on a programmed basis to achieve the following: Deep spreading root systems to search for food and to support plants like guy ropes Strong, healthy stems and branches to support flowers and fruit Strong, healthy leaves to produce chlorophyl and for picking for culinary and medicinal purposes Well-formed large, perfumed, long lasting flowers Fruits that form and ripen tastily Mature seed heads that can be dried for next year’s sowings or culinary purposes. NUTRIENTS REQUIRED BY PLANTS From the Air: carbon dioxide (cO2) taken in by leaves at night to create chlorophyl Water from rain taken in via leaves and roots - combined with microorganisms this enables nutrients to be extracted from the soil and plant cells to swell and provide rigidity/strength in stems, branches and leaves
From the Soil: Nitrogen (N): Plants require large quantities to develop strong green plant structures –especially stems, branches and leaves and also roots. Phosphorus (P): Essential in large quantities for the development of strong root structures. Potassium (K): Essential in large quantities for the development of flower buds, flowers, seed heads and fruit and to develop drought and disease resistance in plants. Minerals and trace elements like vitamins and mineral additives for humans provide health and vitality. The most important are Minerals required in moderate quantities; Magnesium – prevents yellowing of leaves between veins; calcium – essential for cell growth and disease resistance e.g. Brassicas clubroot and Blossom End Rot; Sulphur – for general plant health mainly used for preventing mildew and fungal diseases on vines, courgettes, squashes, tomatoes; Iron – Prevents bleaching of leaves between veins. TRACE ELEMENTS Zinc: Prevents leaves from developing yellow spots. Manganese: Prevents yellowing of leaves between veins Boron, copper and molybdenum contribute to the development of cell structure and natural disease control. HOW TO PROVIDE THESE NUTRIENTS FOR PLANTS Except for carbon dioxide (cO2) all the nutrients need to be extracted from the soil. a fertile soil should contain all the nutrients needed for plant growth tied up in forms that are extractable by food searching roots. Traditionally soils in flower, fruit and vegetable gardens were enriched year after year by the addition of manure, compost, urine, bone meal and lime, when required. Most importantly manure and compost added humus to the soil
‘Clodagh and Dick Handscombe’s gardening books make good presents. They can be obtained from high street and internet bookshops including Amazon UK and Spain. Thanks to readers the Kindle E-book Making waterless gardens a practical reality world wide is starting to sell well.’ © Clodagh and Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com
which included millions of microorganisms which aided water retention by binding together fine particles, especially in sandy soils and breaking up clods of clayey soil. a productive soil will have a crumbly structure and feel to the hand. Manure and compost encouraged the breeding of worms which were essential to the processing of raw organic material into usable humus and also keeping the soil aerated and preventing consolidation. The above are the processes still nurtured by the increasing number of organic/ecological gardeners returning to ancient practices. But in the second half of the 20th century: There was a major decrease in the number of animals kept in relation to population and land under cultivation, hence a shortage of natural fertilizers. Mad cow Disease has resulted in bans on the manufacture and use of bonemeal fertilizers. There was a major population drift from rural inland Spain and Northern Spain to the Spanish costas. Most coastal houses have been built on poor soil and rarely on rich, well-managed ex agricultural land. Many gardens are smaller and there is less room to hide a compost heap and many modern gardeners expect every corner of the garden to look tidy as if hoovered daily! Many gardeners and neighbours do not like the smell of fresh organic fertilizers -but the smell doesn’t linger! In response the inorganic manufactured fertilizer industry formed. Initially to develop and distribute chemical fertilizers for industrialised and mechanised farming and secondly catering for both garden and house plants, often with a range of feeds for specific plants. More recently manufacturers have also developed a number of convenient organic fertilizers. Next week we will continue to consider the feeding of plants by looking at what commercial fertilizers are available, when to feed and the preparation required.

money Reasons to be cheerful 7-13 June 2013
by
Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco
Yes, there are some. There are at least more grounds for optimism in the current sales figures* for Spanish property than there was in Ian Dury’s less then cheerful song.
We are all tired of having statistics given to us that prove house prices are up/ down/ static and the market is buoyant/ flat/ plummeting. As with all statistics they can be read in different ways. However, these ones are from a respected source – the Spanish Land Registry (el registro de propriedades) - and are accepted by conveyancing experts. So, what messages can we draw from them? The first message is that there is a future in foreigners. Although the Spanish may not be buying in the same number, foreigners are an increasingly healthy proportion of those investing in Spanish property. The overall number of house sales to foreigners has risen from 4.24% of overall sales in 2009 to 8.12% in 2012. The good news is that in 2012, 24,938 Spanish properties were sold to foreign buyers. The second message is that although the British are still the biggest buyers of Spanish property, catching up fast are several other nationalities: Country - Number of purchases - % of total UK - 4,148 - 16.63% France - 2,483 - 9.96%
Russia - 2,399 - 9.62%
Germany - 1,974 - 7.92% Belgium - 1,624 - 6.51% Norway - 1,429 - 5.73% Italy -
1,230 - 4.93%
Sweden - 1,163 - 4.66% The third message is that this group of enthusiastic Spanish home seekers could be in your autonomous community soon! Further breakdown of the statistics shows that the most popular areas for foreigners to purchase were: Autonomous community % of total Balearics - 24.95% Canaries - 22.11% Valencian region - 18.01% Murcian region - 11.24% Catalonia - 9.34% Andalucia - 8.86% The fourth and final message is not only to look to other markets if you have a home to sell but what their preferences are too. For example, purchasers from the UK are still happier than most other
31
countries to buy new-build property. However, for the French, used property is twice as popular as new and the Germans also tend to go for a home with at least one previous owner. There are differences in property size preferences too. For example, Swedish, Belgian and French purchasers are more likely to seek out a smaller property than someone from the UK or Germany. All this international purchasing is good news for Ábaco. Come into our offices and you’ll hear English,Swedish, Russian, German, French, Italian, Dutch and, of course, Spanish, spoken in every department. Amongst our 42 members of staff we have nearly every language covered that you are ever likely to need and most of them are spoken by a native. So, if you are wanting to buy or sell your property, then our advice would be to look flexibly at the range of markets available. With the right multilingual support you could be buying or selling property on the Costa Blanca and contributing positively to the next set of cheerful statistics. *Registradores de España: http://www.registradores.org/ If you require our conveyancing service please contact us on 96 670 3748

Refusal of habitability certificate by
Carlos Baos
of White & Baos Abogados
English & Spanish Solicitors
We have built a property in La Marina Alta (Alicante) in accordance with the building or construction license granted by the Town Hall. But now this same city council refuses to give us the occupation license or habitability certificate, saying that we should have paid or transferred to them some land as part of the urbanisation process. Without this license we cannot get water and electricity contracts. What can we do against the license refusal? First of all, we must inform you that we cannot give you advice without seeing and studying all the documents. Nevertheless, generally, we can say that the Occupation License has a dual objective: To confirm that the property is suitable to be used and occupied and that it fulfills the habitability requisites such as ventilation requirements, etc. The first occupation license also confirms whether the property built corresponds with the building project presented in the build application license. This is as foreseen in the Valencian Community in Article 32 of the Law 3/2004,
of Quality in the Edification. Having said that, we understand that sometimes when an occupation license is applied for, some Town Halls take the opportunity to claim for things that are not related at all, such as: penalties for illegal buildings; transfer of plots; debts as a consequence of the urbanisation process, etc. In your case, it could be understood that the Town Hall cannot deny your occupation license, merely for the lack of transfer of part of a plot as per the urbanisation process, because that is nothing to do with the occupation license, the process of which only determines whether the property has the necessary habitability conditions and if it is a new property, and
whether what is built matches with the building project and license. In this sense there are also some court precedents such as the Court Order number 1370/2000 from the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TJS), which states: ‘requesting for the transfer of land or its economic value in order to grant the first occupation license is… against the law and therefore must be declared null’. If you have a property and you have a problem getting the first or the second occupation licence, our firm can help you. Guardia Civil gun auction THE HEADQUARTERS of the Guardia Civil in Alicante is to hold an auction on 10th June to sell a total of 685 guns. “This represents a 23% decrease in the number of weapons auctioned in 2012,” said Antonio Carrión, head of the Arms Intervention Office. A variety of pieces are up for grabs ranging from a 1860 gun cartridge pin to a modern semiautomatic pistol as used by elite Israeli forces. As in previous years, 80% of the weapons up for auction are shotguns owned by people who failed to renew their license, ranging in price between 1€ and 3,000€. The weapons are on display until today (Friday). Bidders are required to pay a security interest at the tax office in order to participate.

HAVING A pension and knowing what to do with it is hard enough, but using your pension to buy an annuity can be equally confusing and in some cases be a huge mistake as a recent article in the Sunday Mail shows, with its story on Keith Beattie. ACCORDING TO the Mail on Sunday, when Keith Beattie retired in 2007 he had built up an impressive pension pot worth £280,000. He bought a single-life annuity from insurance giant Aviva that would pay income only for as long as he lived. If he died before his wife Liz, which was likely as his health was poor and she was much younger, she would get nothing. None of this was clear until Keith’s death in 2009 at the age of 63. By then Aviva had paid just 20 months of income totaling less than £20,000. Liz, 51, says: ‘When Keith died, the payments simply stopped and that was it. Annuities are provided by insurers as a way in which a person can use their pension pot to guarantee a regular their income for life. They usually come with a range of options to suit your circumstances. The best return you will be offered is if you take out a single-life annuity this will just to cover you. The problem arises if you die before your spouse or within a few years to taking out the annuity, then all the remaining money left in your pension pot will be lost. The remaining money will not be passed onto any of your beneficiaries. Your spouse could well be left with no form of income. If you take out a joint life annuity it can pay either part – such as 50% – or the full amount of the income should they die. But these extras mean that you get a lot less income for your money, so two thirds of people opt for single life, not realising the problems this could cause. What you do with your pension is one of the most important financial decisions you will ever make as it determines the income that will see you through the rest of your life, but as rates on standard annuities are at an all time low many thousands of workers on pensionable age face the prospect of meagre returns for a lifetime of savings. Luckily there are alternatives to buying an annuity that may better suit your needs so those of you that are approaching retirement age, or those of you thinking of buying an annuity or those of you being asked by your pension company to take out an annuity should consider seeking financial advice to discuss what options are available to you. If you have any questions or would like any advice regarding the above or any financial matters please contact Christina Brady by email christina.brady@ blacktowerfm.com or call on 658 892 330.

Línea Directa reaches 2 million customers and beats its profits record
In clearly difficult economic times, with the insurance sector decreasing for the fourth consecutive year, Línea Directa Aseguradora has closed 2012 with the highest profit levels in its history: 121.5 million euros before tax, representing an increase of 13% on the previous year. There have been three main reasons for this: the sharp rise in the number of customers, effective underwriting risk management and the improvement of all the company’s processes and services, which have enabled it to reduce expenses without diminishing the scope of the cover offered. As a result, the total number of policies, which since last February has exceeded two million, rose by over 105,000 last year, mainly thanks to the Home Insurance Area, which in the 5 years since it was launched, now has over 230,000 policies without having resorted to mergers or acquisitions. The International Area, a strategic business Línea Directa offers its foreign policyholders living in Spain all its services in English and German. As a result, purchasing the policy, making enquiries, dealing with accidents, sending documentation and 24-hour road assistance can all be carried out both in English and German, at a time which suits the policyholder and with only one phone call. In addition, Línea Directa’s International Area offers its policyholders a translation service which they can use for dealing with repairers. The International Area is a key strategic factor for Línea Directa, through which the company offers its foreign customers totally exclusive services, discounts and offers.

Making your home presentable Brought to you by
THERE IS a lot written about making your home presentable for a quick sale. In a perfect world we would all like to believe that simply by tidying up a little, the first prospective buyer will walk into your home and make a fantastic offer, followed by a quick trip to the Notary to finalise contracts. Of course this is the fantasy of real estate. Realistically there is a lot more to selling property and the process can be complex and lengthy depending on the property, details of the sale and the abilities of your chosen realtor. At Spanish Coast Villas we have some absolutely stunning villas and apartments in our portfolio. From the moment we entered these properties for an evaluation it was clear that the owners took constant pride in their homes. It was apparent that rooms were always clean and things were always put back in their place. We could see in an instant that there had not been a quick ‘the real estate lady´s on her way’ hiding of things under beds and in dusty cupboards. Of course this is not always the case. There are occasionally homes we are asked to evaluate which obviously have not seen a good clean in many weeks. Others are overloaded with piles of clutter and unnecessary framed photographs and ornaments which will probably not appeal to today´s buyers. When you decide to list your home for sale, imagine you are the buyer and try to be objective about your “stuff ”. As professionals, one of the most difficult tasks we face is suggesting to a vendor that they might consider a lick of
paint here and there, or mending a broken front gate. Asking them to consider cleaning their home is even more delicate. Realising that some home seekers will savour the challenge of remodelling, fixing up, clearing out and cleaning up their new home, remember this will reflect in the price they will offer for your property. Most buyers will require an already clean and tidy property...even if they plan on re-decorating themselves. As a vendor, you don´t have to paint your entire house, rearrange your furniture or start knocking down walls and re-structuring your property. There really is a buyer out there for every property. What you can do is make your home as appealing as possible, with some daily care. The basics are simple: Clear off your kitchen and bathroom counters to give the illusion of more space. Put intimate products such as razors, hair brushes and tooth brushes neatly inside a cabinet. Empty all rubbish containers...there will be household smells that you might not notice. If you smoke, move your ashtrays outside for the viewing time at least. Pull back all curtains and open blinds to allow as much natural light in as possible. Open windows and doors whenever possible: this is the most effective way of clearing stale air.

‘Sponsored’ feature by Sandy Donohoe from Spanish Coast Villas Move your convenient stack of shoes from inside the front door, and throw out old newspapers and brochures. See that pet beds and food bowls are either neatly stored or placed outside: not every prospective buyer is an animal lover. Never leave laundry in sight and never leave a bed unmade. Don’t cook your most extravagant, pungent-smelling foreign food on the day of a viewing. You have hired an experienced realtor whose aim is to market and sell your property. Let them do their job! It may be difficult to sit on the naya as your agent shows strangers through your home but a crowd of five or six people shuffling from room to room as the proud owner points out his or her do-it-yourself projects does not help. Buyers need to feel relaxed and comfortable, with space and time to look and think for themselves. The fewer people gathered around them, the clearer their thoughts will be. At Spanish Coast Villas we encourage every client to give us as much information as possible about their home. We ask questions, note the answers and work hard at matching buyers’ wishes with vendors’ facilities. Pushing something that does not meet the given criteria would be a futile venture for us, and extremely frustrating for vendors and buyers. Spanish Coast Villas has many more helpful pointers related to selling property and moving home. If you would like more details please contact our office.

Coming to a meter cupboard near you soon
THE TRADITIONAL electric meter will soon be a thing of past as they are replaced with Smart Meters. A Royal Decree established a meter substitution plan for all consumers contracted with less than 15 kW by the end of 2018. SPAIN IS a country with 46 million inhabitants and approximately 26 million electricity customers. Th ree major energy play ers act in the country, Endesa, Gas Natural Fenosa, and Iberdrola, with a market share of almost 95%. For Iberdrola customers, it’s all part of something called the STAR Project, a state-of-the-art remote grid and management distribution system. Th ey intend to replace 10.3 million tradi tional meters with Smart Meters within the next five years. Th e project requires a total investment of some €2 billion and involves 80,000 transformer stations being adapted with remote management and monitoring capabilities. An electric Smart Meter is one that records power consumption and communicates that information to a monitoring station for management and billing purposes. Smart Meters enable two-way communication between the meter and the central control system. Real-time sensors provide information about power outages and power surges. Many confuse Smart Meters with home energy monitors. Th e roll-out of Smart Meters is one strategy for energy saving. While electricity supply companies can save millions a year from their introduction, consumer benefits will depend on people actively changing their energy use. For example, using time-of-day tariffs that offer lower rates at off-peak times, and selling electricity back to the grid. Utility companies propose that from a consumer perspective, smart metering offers a number of potential benefits to householders. Th ese include, a) an end to estimated bills, which are a major source of complaints for many customers, b) a tool to help consumers better manage their energy use - stating that Smart Meters with a display outside their homes could provide up-todate information on electricity consumption and in doing so help people to manage their energy use and reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions. Some groups have expressed concerns regarding the cost, health,
fire risk, security and privacy effects of Smart Meters and the remote controllable ‘kill switch’ that is included with them. People living near Smart Meters have been reported to have “suffered headaches, body aches… flu-like symptoms” from the electric and magnetic fields that are emitted from the device. In the United States some meter installers have been prevented at gun point from replacing the meters. Iberdrola has Smart Grid projects underway in the Valencia Autonomous Region, the Basque Country and Murcia. Benidorm the Stag and Hen Capital BENIDORM IS at the height of the ‘Stag and Hen’ season! Yep, there is a ‘stag and hen season’ and it is mostly due to the Imserso packages on offer during the months of April and May, when thousands of visitors aged 25-40 flock to the pretty city to celebrate their imminent loss of freedom! The entertainment is unparalleled; the food and drink is plentiful and reasonably priced; the package deals at between 70€ and 150€ are offers too good to refuse. Why nurse a hangover in gloomy Britain when you can recover on a sunsoaked beach for less money! Some packages also include a ‘bar crawl route’ and other extras to help organise large groups celebrating from early evening until dawn.
Welcome to lovely gay Benidorm BENIDORM HAS welcomed gay visitors since the 1970s and is one of the oldest gay villages in Spain. With a compact gay scene you can eat, sleep and play without the need for buses or taxis every night. And there is a huge range of hotels and apartments within a short walk of the bars. Benidorm Gay Pride 2013, confirmed for 14th, 15th and 16th September this year, is to be partly organised by the local Spanish association of Lesbians Gays Transexuals and Bisexuals (ALGTB) and the Town Hall: ‘Gay Culture Week’ starts from 8th September. THE GAY VILLAGE ALL YEAR PLUS A SUMMER DANCE CLUB PARADISE The first thing you need to know is that Benidorm is open 365 days a year and is a clubbers’ paradise in the summer months of June to September. Peak season for the gay village is from September until the second week in January and after Easter until the end of June. During July and August the scene is vibrant with mainly Spanish, Italian and Portuguese visitors offering a very sexy scene when the big (not gay) dance clubs are open: Room for 30,000 clubbers in the mixed discos which include big names such as Penelope, KU, KM and Space in huge, Ibiza-style dance clubs. BENIDORM GAY BARS - BIG CHOICE - LOW PRICES In the gay village there are currently around 25 gay bars and clubs and an additional 20 gay-friendly places to eat, drink, and stay. Many bars have been trading for more than 30 years under the same name: most are open between 9pm and 10pm. Small bars tend to offer the best value, with loads of happy hours at different times when beers will set you back just 2€! Walking distance
between venues is only one or two minutes. There are three main where most of the bars are to be found. These run parallel to each other off the main pedestrian street in the Old Town between the Poniente and Levante beach. For serious clubbers, Benidorm offers 5,000 capacity in Summer Discos, like Space - open until 8am! SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: GAY BENIDORM IS A TOP GAY RESORT The Gay scene in Benidorm is made up of mainly small, friendly bars with just enough variety to suit everyone. You will find outrageously camp drag bars, men only bars… All tastes are catered for from young and trendy to Bears. Benidorm is such a safe place we can recommend the resort as a great place for TV and TS visitors too. Most of the bars are ‘mixed gay’ with just three men-only bars. Older gay men are very well catered for also. It is traditional to ‘do the circuit’. Every venue has its peak time so you need to chat

to the locals to get it right; otherwise you might think you are the only gay in the village… The locals tend to eat around 10pm and hit the gay scene after midnight. With this in mind you should be aware that you will often find the bars quiet early evening. If you find a bar you like and it is quiet, stay a while - it is sure to get busy later. In winter the bars get busier around 11pm with peak nights Friday to Sunday. In summer expect to be out until 8am if you do the big dance clubs on the outskirts of the resort.

MUNDOMAR IS a fun leisure park committed primarily to the care, conservation and reproduction of animal species. Mundo Mar is located next to Benidorm’s Aqualandia water park. Different shows are offered each day showcasing parrots, sea lions and dolphins as well as various feeding activities with lions, lemurs and penguins. A wide variety of animals can be seen, such are flamingos, turtles and swans, storks, lemurs and hundreds of tropical birds.

Dining out with...
The Duchess
WELL AS promised it’s off to my Sunday Lunch Club to give you a taste of the best of British.
I MUST say The Déjà Vu restaurant in the heart of the old town in Calle Santa Faz just off the walking street has been a favorite of mine for some time, especially on Sunday (reservation advisable). This restaurant must be the best value for money in the old town: 9.50€ including a half bottle of wine per person; four courses; homemade soup to start (usually vegetable) followed by a choice of four intermediate starters and then a choice of chicken, fish, beef, pork, or lamb (50 cents extra but well worth it). And there’s always a vegie option too! Then desserts... This week Joan was in town better known as Miss Collins - but unfortunately due to the heavy filming schedule of Benidorm she couldn’t make my Sunday lunch party - so I fell back on my good friend Lord Tupper and his delightful daughter Poppy Tupper. Sunday lunch starts around 1pm and goes on though till about 9.30pm. Déjà Vu has been in the same ownership for several years serving different styles of menus throughout the week; early birds from 6pm until 7.30pm and then a set menu for 12.95€ and of course a la carte. Most Sundays Cris (the chef) and Juan, who works front of house, better known as Juanette, give a comical approach to our Sunday lunch club always making my guests feel very welcome. On this occasion we all opted for the soup, piping hot as this Duchess likes it hot. Sometimes hard to find in Spain! Lukewarm does nothing for me. We all followed with the prawn and crab cocktail. For the main course Poppy and I had the beef and Lord Tupper the lamb (PS: he gave me the extra 50 cents). All the main courses were served with plenty of fresh vegetables, roast potatoes and mash and a wonderful
Deja Vu can be found in the Old Town with its tiny narrow streets
rich gravy sauce. Well last fortnight I declined the dessert menu but I went for the homemade cheese cake, Poppy the crumble and custard. She’s a size 18 on a good day so I felt I could go that little extra and the Lord sat out on this one and had a coffee. Overall this restaurant caters for
everybody’s budget, especially Sunday lunch. And don’t forget there is plenty to see and do in the old town too. 28.50€ for the three of us - including the wine! Back in two weeks with healthy options… Lose weight and eat well: I did and so can you!

San Juan festival By Irena Bodnarec, BenidormAllYearRound.com THE NIGHT of San Juan is a very old festival and takes place every year on the night of 23rd June - the ritual dictates that it is a special night to ward off evil spirits and clean out everything bad in your life. It is a very ancient festival, originally with deep religious meaning but has become diluted and is basically a night of partying and fun with friends and family. The beaches will be crowded with both locals and tourists, out to celebrate the start of the Midsummer solstice. Many people gather in groups with family and friends, starting to descend from about 7pm onwards, but as it falls on Sunday this year they will probably be out on the beach from the middle of the afternoon. Most bring tables, chairs, food and plenty of drinks in cool boxes and basically party. Although the beaches are usually policed at night, on the night of San Juan they are expected to turn a blind eye! Its an amazing atmosphere and at midnight those brave enough go into the sea with 3 coins and a white

flower which they throw in for good luck and then light a candle for their dreams to come true. For those not that brave a splash and paddle will do! In previous years they lit small bonfires -”hogueras” - fires and water are protagonists of the night, but unfortunately last year fires were banned on the beach. It is not clear yet whether they will be allowed this year but we´ll keep you updated. The tradition is to write down on a piece of paper all the bad thing you want to get rid of in your life and burn it in the bonfire at the stroke of midnight before going into the sea whilst others say you have to jump 3 times over the hoguera and you will be cleansed and your problems burned away. How wonderful if it could be this easy! But if you want to be doubly sure then do them all to cover every eventuality. Parking will be extremely difficult around the beach area so be prepared to park some way further back and walking down - but you’ll have a great evening soaking up the atmosphere and being part of a real Spanish fiesta.

Sunday calorie burn high above sea level By Dave Gaskell – realbenidorm.net THE MOUNTAIN (or is it a big hill) above Sierra Cortina and behind Terra Mitica offers a relatively easy to moderate climb and superb walk with some of very best views of Benidorm. The climb to the top takes about one hour on a rough well used loose stone. A few parts are quite steep. This is a walk for those who enjoy walking, not for those who prefer a Sunday stroll with a pub at the end of it! But, the rewards are panoramic (take a camera) scenes that very few people ever get an opportunity to view. To start this lovely walk, take the Finestrat road (CV767) from Benidorm until you reach the roundabout where the entrance to the Sierra Cortina resort is, turn right (Calle Isla Gran Canaria) and park up 100m along the road where you will see a verge and a few trees on the left with a rough path heading upwards (obviously). Start you climb here. Do take
lunch, water, first aid kit and wear decent walking footwear. Once at the summit you can choose to simply enjoy the view or continue along the path for a further 5kms or so along the top and back again. The path across the summit is easy to follow and an easy to moderate walk. From here you can look down on Benidorm, Terra Mitica and take in the views as far as Alicante and Calpe. You do not need to be very fit, 20kg overweight, an ex-smoker (50 a day) and 52 years of age still allowed me

Life spanish
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Step by Step Spanish -35 AS THREATENED – sorry mentioned – at the end of last week’s article, there are a couple more points to make about word order, before we move on. oNe Is the trick of “inversion” that is switching with word order between subject and verb. This often occurs in the second clause, or section, of a sentence. We have the same phenomenon in english, but in much more restricted circumstances. For example, in a written text we might read: Paul said, “close the door”. If we turn the sentence round, the usual order would be “close the door” said Paul. It would be less usual to read “close the door” Paul said. so you can see that the more usual sentence switches, or inverts, the usual order of subject followed by noun. In spanish this kind of inversion occurs in a much wider variety of contexts and changes are often to do with which part of the sentence we want to emphasise. here are just a couple of examples. el jefe llegó a las siete. or a las siete llegó el jefe. Mis padres siempre iban a la feria or siempre iban mis padres a la feria. Now, also on the subject of word order, here’s a question that is especially for those of you who have experienced the joy of teaching english to the spanish. Why do you think they always say: “I have for breakfast coffee and toast” in answer to the question: “What do you have for breakfast?” I don’t mean, why do they have coffee and
toast for breakfast, I mean, why do they always get the word order wrong? answer at the end of this article. Finally, the sort of thing nobody ever thinks to tell you about word order is to do with proper nouns. “Proper” here doesn’t mean that they know how to hold their knife and fork correctly, it means nouns that represent actual names of things. “Jane” is a proper noun, so is “spain”, and so is “atlantic”. The point here is that the word order is often the opposite we round from english. We say “the atlantic ocean” the spanish say “el océano atlántico” we say “the red sea” the spanish say “el mar rojo”. however, mountains and rivers are the same “Mount everest” the spanish say “el monte everest”. There’s clearly more to this than meets the eye, but I’ll leave the research to you if you’re really interested. and so finally, why do the spanish always, and without exception, say “I have for breakfast coffee and toast” instead of “I have coffee and toast for breakfast”? The reason is because they are mentally translating “to have for breakfast” which is the single verb “desayunar”. They’re thinking “desayuno café y tostada” and that’s the order it comes out in english: “I have for breakfast … coffee and toast”. all of which just goes to show how we speak in the order of the words of our language native.

DoN’T Be misled by the title – this is ‘fast’ as in Lent, not ‘fast’ as in quick. Nevertheless, this diet has been hailed as the biggest diet revolution since atkins. The concept is simple: you eat and drink normally for five days of the week and cut your calorie intake to a quarter of your normal daily need on the remaining two, which don’t have to be consecutive. For example on Mondays and Thursdays men ration themselves to 600 calories and women 500. on the other days, within reason, you eat what you like. an added bonus is that you can tailor the diet around your social life. out to dinner with friends on Monday? so change your fast day to Tuesday. Dr Michael Mosely presents the fascinating science behind the theory of 5+2 dieting and fitness guru and dietician Mimi spencer presents a calorie counter and a section on Fast 500 and Fast 600 menu plans. In short it’s a logical diet in that the body goes into energy-burning mode on the fast days and sets your metabolism up to chomp away at excess fat for the remainder of the week. expect to lose 2lbs a week once you get into the swing. as I said, it’s not fast but this way the weight stays off. Do I say all this on Author: Dr Michael Mosley & Mimi spencer Publisher: short Books (paperback) Price: 10.80€ ISBN: 9 78170 721675
Suduko Answer
Dr Mosley’s word? No, I’ve been a guinea pig and had modest results of a 4lbs loss in the first two weeks. More to the point, I don’t find it hard to survive on two boiled eggs and a tuna steak with veg on a Fast 600 day. This won’t work for you if you can’t get through the day without chomping on a Big Mac and chips so, as with any diet you need to want to shed the pounds. But this could do it for you. Try it. Let’s make room for the others.....

GARY BURR, like many of us, has lost relatives and friends to cancer. After the loss of a loved one in April 2012 he was left a small bequest which he decided to use to open the Giving4Giving charity shop in La Nucia for cancer support. Gary chooses different cancer charities to fundraise for and often lesser known ones as he feels very passionate about helping those whose lives have been touched by tragedy. He has also been organising charity events since March and has so far raised 8,500â‚Ź. He plans to do more before the end of the year, the next event to be a sponsored cycle ride - so if you enjoy cycling and want to help a good cause please contact him. The shop is always in need of donations: clothes; household items; furniture (which he will collect). The shop is located at the Monver Comercial Plaza no 12 next to Masymas: contact Gary on 603 137 697.

Opening documents in Skydrive HI AUNTY: Please can you give me some advice about the purchase of Regcleanpro, as I am experiencing a problem with opening emails sent via Microsoft Word to edit or copy. I once was able to - now it seems it will not convert to SKYDRIVE; it insists on putting them onto Acrobat or tells me to download on to my documents. Either way I can’t seem to access them for the purpose of amending for returning them by email or copying for that matter. My system seems slow and very frustrating as I am being bombarded with RegClean Pro and I am unsure whether that would solve my problem. Regards, Hazel Aunty says: Regclean pro is a ‘system cleaning’ tool. It may, or may not help with the problem you are having with your MS Word emails. Usually, from the email, you save the document onto your PC, say into My Documents. Then you can click on that document to open it up in MS Word, and that will allow you to edit. If you are clicking on a saved word document, and it is opening up in Adobe, then it sound like your file associations have become confused. In windows you can change the file associations: Right click on the file Select ‘open with’ If MS Word is in that list select that, and make sure the ‘always use this program to open this type of files’ is selected.

DEAR AUNTY V: On my desktop (screen) I, like most other people, have icons as short cuts to various sites and services etc. Is there any way that my email icons such as Hotmail.com; mail.com and so on can be made to light up or flash or something to alert me of incoming email? Thank you, Alexander in Benitachell. Aunty says: sorry I am not aware of any ‘icons’ that do this, apart from in Chrome for Gmail. But usually if you keep the services open, you do get notifications on your desktop when new email arrives.
‘Out of date’ message HI AUNTY: I loaded Microsoft security program, but every time I log on I get a message saying it is out of date. What can I do to prevent this? I had no problem with AVG. Sheila Aunty says: Microsoft Security Essential should automatically update the program and virus definitions whenever the PC is connected to the It may take a moment or two for it to connect to Microsoft; check for updates, and then say everything is ‘okay’. If you open MSE, then you can manually check for updates. One reason why MSE may show it is ‘out of date’ is if the date and time settings on the PC are incorrect - so it is worth checking these. Another is if other ‘antivirus’ software running on the PC is ‘conflicting’ with MSE. A good solution to solve most issues with software is to uninstall and reinstall MSE.

Hinari Genie MultiAttachment Blender
It wasn’t so long ago that the Kenwood Chef was the must-have kitchen appliance, but boy oh boy was it big, chunky, heavy and noisy! And it took up half the kitchen too. Thankfully these days are gone and compact yet powerful multifunction kitchen appliances are the norm rather than the exception. An excellent example of this is the Hinari Genie Multi-Attachment Blender. This clever little 15 piece device covers all the food preparation bases, and is lightweight and easy to dismantle for cleaning. The Hinari provides eight functions in one – it can chop, blend, mix, whip, puree, grind, grate and juice. And since it´s a jug blender it´s more secure and solid than a more traditional hand blender which are often preferred for their lightness and mobility. The heart of the Hinari is a high-torque power base unit which houses a 230 watt motor to power the blades. There is a choice of two stainless steel blade types – a flat blade for grinding and chopping and a cross blade for the other functions. Once the blade type has been selected the last step is to add the relevant piece of processing kit. You can choose from a one-litre blending jug to which a juice extractor can be added to help prepare fresh fruit juices. There are also two blending cups of different sizes depending upon the amount to be processed. It even comes with a set of four party cups with removable brightly coloured rings for preparing and serving drinks.
To save on space the drinks and blending cups fit neatly into the base for storage – and make it easy to unpack and use when the need arises. The kit also includes two re-sealable lids to preserve the freshness, and two shaker/steamer tops to allow you to create patterns of any topping you choose on your drinks. And if you´re short on ideas the Hinari even comes with a recipe book to help you out! The Inspectors Verdict: The Hinari Genie Multi-Attachment Blender is an
ideal replacement for a number of other kitchen devices. And as it´s so compact it won´t be using up valuable cupboard/ counter space either! Visit www.gadget-hound.co.uk/ kitchen-blender/ to purchase the Hinari Genie Multi-Attachment Blender for 32€. Please note the blender has an UK plug which will require a Spanish 2-pin adapter. Prices quoted include free delivery to Spain (Euro cost subject to exchange rate at time of purchase).

David the ‘Charming Dinosaur’ DAVID AND Jonathon Dimbleby carried on a great dynasty following in their father Richard’s lofty footsteps by going into broadcasting. DAVID’S CAREER has been the more prominent, topped off almost twenty years ago when he began hosting ‘Question Time’ for the BBC in 1994. The programme is pretty hard hitting with David’s no nonsense style keeping everything on track if some political figure starts with the ‘evading the issue’ crapola. To my mind, when a man such as he decides to speak out on a particular subject, it’s a good idea if we all have a listen. Talking to the Radio Times last week on the subject of the firing of an older female presenter David said “television is being sexist and ageist … why should age matter with women, women mature elegantly and better than men…” Love it! … then, bringing in the television executives, David said, “They are told attractive young women will bring in a bigger audience than less attractive, older women, to say nothing of less attractive older men, like me.” He certainly fought the ladies’ corner and then some, but it is with great joy I now bring to you one more contributor to this item in the shape of Anna Ford who said way back in 2006: “I wonder how these charming dinosaurs such as Mr Dimbleby (David that is) and BBC World Affairs editor John Simpson continue to procure contracts with the BBC, when, however hard I look, I fail to see any woman of the same age, the same intelligence and the same rather baggy looks.” Don’t you just love the ‘charming dinosaurs’ tag Anna! … ANNA!

I’m watching you Big Brother!
IF YOU leaf your way through this page regularly you will know what I think of ‘reality shows’, and if I had to choose one that I would like to throw heavy rocks at it would be Big Brother. But the news is not good, not good at all. Not only is the show going to be back next month on Ch5 haunting our TV screens 24/7, but the catch-up shows seem to have been copulating as there is going to be double the amount of 90 minute shows with clowns like Emma Willis, AJ Odudu and Rylan Clark making with the ‘aren’t we having a great time’ telling you about what’s been going on blah-de-blah-de-blah… However - and it’s a very tentative however - one of these catch-up shows is to be called ‘Big Brother’s Bit On The Psyche’ and the claim is that it
will feature experts and psychologists who will analyse the behaviour of the participants ... umm … ok! Coming out of the same box it is also reported that the house will have a selfsufficiency theme and eco-friendly surroundings, with housemates expected to grow their own food … ‘How do you grow a burger?’ is a likely question to come up methinks. Other reports have hinted that the housemates are likely to be a broader mix of ages, with a source telling The Sun: “We don’t just want a bunch of fame-hungry youngsters who only want to show off.” Well then source person you’ve finally got it! … Who wants fame hungry idiots splashed all over the telly? Certainly not me! And psychologists! … Is this yet more animal dung? … Watch this space!
Along come three crackers at once!
HAVING ALWAYS been a great lover of television comedy shows that are both amusing as well as challenging to the brain-box, it’s been a tough time of late finding anything worthy of booking some quality time on the sofa. However, just like the three buses coming at once syndrome we now seem to be in a bit of a purple patch of well scripted and performed shows. ITV2 recently put out ‘Plebs,’ six extremely funny, albeit risqué programmes, then ‘Up the Women’ came out on BBC 4 last Thursday 30th May, and now ‘Pyschobitches’, a real cracker which started out as a pilot on Sky Arts 1 last year and has now blossomed into a full series. Rebecca Front plays psychiatrist in the show to a succession of celebrity patients, giving top comic impressionists the opportunity to show off their talents. In the space of 25 minutes everyone from the Brontë Sisters to Margot Fonteyn by way of Nina Simone has a go at hogging the ego-crazed spotlight. Thursdays: ‘Psychobitches’ on Sky Arts 1 straight after ‘Up the Women’ on BBC 4.

Life recipe
Roast chicken salad
IT’S FAR too hot to be cooking, but we’ve still got to eat. So here’s a simple idea for a special salad. I CHEATED a bit with a shop-bought blue cheese dressing, but you can use almost anything. A blob of mayonnaise would be good or even – dare I say it – a generous helping of Heinz salad cream. Add a few green grapes if you like, or perhaps some fresh or jarred asparagus and a few green olives. Serve with crusty bread and alioli. • 2 roast chicken breasts, cold • Mixed salad leaves • A green apple, quartered, cored and cut into wedges • A small avocado, peeled and cut into wedges • ½ a green pepper, thinly sliced • A 2 inch piece of cucumber, peeled and cut into batons • A handful of shelled walnuts • Your favourite dressing Slice the chicken breasts and place around the edge of a serving plate. Pile a handful of salad leaves in the middle, then add the cucumber, green pepper, apple and avocado. Drizzle
with your favourite dressing and sprinkle with walnuts.

By Jack Troughton VALLEY VOICES – the U3A Vall del Pop Choir – enjoyed a successful first concert when they appeared with the Big Fish Rock Choir at Calpe. The programme featured both groups singing separately and together, led by Suzanne Millington and Aileen Lightfoot. And the evening’s entertainment also hit a high note for charity – raising more than 500€ for Friends of the Children of EMAUS. Valley Voices will next be singing at Lliber Fair on 29th June.

Losing weight without trying? FOR MANY people, to lose weight with no effort involved would be a dream come true! However, unintentional weight loss is normally a sign that something is wrong and should never be ignored. WEIGHT LOSS may be one of the first signs of certain conditions, but in others the person may begin to lose weight only when the problem/illness is well advanced. For this reason it is important to have unintentional weight loss investigated as soon as possible. Some possible causes include: DIABETES The person may also notice symptoms of increased thirst, tiredness, passing large amounts of urine and craving carbohydrates or sweet foods. DEPRESSION Not everybody suffering depression will lose weight. Some will actually put on weight due to comfort eating. Others lose interest not just in food but in their appearance, work, leisure activities and sex. Insomnia (or the opposite sleeping too much), low mood or tearfulness are amongst the other symptoms of depression. In many cases, family and friends of the affected person are the first to suspect depression. The person themselves may be aware that something is wrong but needs somebody to encourage them to seek help. HYPERTHYROIDISM Also known as an overactive thyroid, occurs when the body produces excessive amounts of the hormone thyroxine. In addition to losing weight, the person may experience many symptoms such as increased hunger, restlessness, insomnia, palpitations, sweating, tremor and anxiety. MALABSORPTION SYNDROMES A person suffering from malabsorption syndrome has problems absorbing nutrients from food through the gut and into the bloodstream. The causes of malabsorption are too numerous to mention
but many will cause the person to suffer weight loss, diarrhoea and general malaise. CHRONIC INFECTIONS OR INFLAMMATORY DISEASES Once again, these are numerous. Weight loss will usually be noticed after other symptoms have presented however in the case of polymyalgia rheumatica, tuberculosis or HIV, weight loss may be one of the first symptoms. ALCOHOL ABUSE When a person drinks too much alcohol they are often unable, or not motivated to take proper care of themselves. In many cases the person may be suffering with depression. They may not eat enough and are often malnourished and in particular, deficient in niacin, thiamine and B12. CANCER Weight loss of 10 pounds or more is a common presenting symptom of cancers of the stomach, oesophagus, pancreas and lung. Other cancer symptoms vary depending on the organ / part of the body affected. Weight loss is often a late sign of cancer but this is not always the case. Attending for cancer screening such as those for cancer of the cervix, breast, bowel and prostate, can help to catch the disease in the early stages thus improving the prognosis. If you or somebody close to you is losing weight unintentionally, be sure to seek advice from your family doctor.

Treadmill turns for EMAUS By Jack Troughton VOLUNTEERS STEPPING out during a 24 hour ‘Treadmillathon’ next week are expected to raise hundreds of Euros for the children cared for by charity EMAUS. The Motive8 personal training studio in Benitachell is staging the marathon from 11am on Thursday 13th June to 11am on Friday 14th June. And the 24 hours have been split into 30 minute slots with two treadmills – and depending on demand a possible third - running together, with each volunteer donating 10€ to take part. Gym owner Poppy Pickersgill said most of the time periods had already been taken – but braver volunteers are need for times between 3.30am and 5am early on Friday morning. “All the money raised will go to EMAUS,” she said. “We have done these before for charity but this is the first time we have run two treadmills together. “People can still get in touch to take part and if need be we will hook up a third treadmill. The more the merrier!” Anyone wishing to give up some time for charity can call Poppy at the studio on 96 649 3939 or 630 766 839.

By Jack Troughton VOLUNTEERS OF the Roundabout Charity Shop were thanked for donations of vital equipment when they visited Denia’s La Pedrera Hospital last Friday. The Javea charity shop team purchased another ‘state of the art’ motorised bed and audio speakers – and have previously donated beds, hospitals and an audio system for the hospital’s unit for chronically sick people. Red Cross scores
By Jack Troughton FREEMASONS OF Valencia Province have donated 57,450€ to purchase the first of a fleet of four ambulances for Alicante Red Cross. A cheque was presented by Provincial Grand Master Barrie Mansell to Red Cross President Javier Gimeno Blanes outside Hercules Football Club in Alicante. Representatives of the Freemasons were then invited to join a 15,000 strong crowd to watch Hercules win a relegation dogfight 1-0 and avoid the drop. The provincial lodge is hoping to raise 200,000€ under the vehicle ‘The Festival 2014’ to provide ambulance services for the Red Cross throughout Valencia. These include ‘homeless support vehicles’ which will work in the community supplying people with clean clothes, shower facilities, and access to social service support, including medical needs. Pictured are Barrie Mansell and Monica Diaz Ruiz, Secretary of Alicante Red Cross admitting the Freemasons logo on the ambulance itself.

Better offer!
Someone isn’t listening to you, and it is time something was done about it before you have to part company. You are so uncomplicated and transparent in your intentions, but it would appear that you alone see the writing on the wall, and it is you alone who must take AS WE look back at life it has been generously punctuated action. Blame Mercury and Cancer in cahoots this week! with happenings that in hindsight may have been for the
best. They may not have been initially seen as the best, or may have just surprised us in their timing and result. The Spiritualist will prescribe that these strange unexpected but meant to be moments were as a result of us following our Spiritual Path; and receiving the blessing of Spirit as part of a blueprint of our specific journey of faith. Others Mars is presently at your side in more ways than one. There appears will mark down anything remotely connected with chance to be no way of pleasing everyone and you are sick of struggle or fate as a coincidence, and not a true part of our destiny. and conflict. Just keep momentum up for a while and someone can When fate intervenes there is always a reason. We take the reigns for a change. The worst is over, so you can begin to may not have known it at the time, but it made us make structure a defence that ensures that this never reoccurs. decisions, change course and take opportunity. If we look back at what was shown to us, but we didn’t see it, that’s Mercury gets close and then hits on Pluto which brings things back to simply because we weren’t ready or we didn’t want or where they started. A great time to make future plans, and to actively need to make changes at the time. We do not lose our feel the freedom away from bickering and constant challenge. You rights, nor our minds when working together with Spirit; have done rather nicely for yourself, and though you look for no and the open door could have scared many people silly, reward there is something wonderful around the corner for you. whilst the closed door was far scarier to others. We have You were warned, but you couldn’t help taking the risk and now got to this day, dear reader, in a personal state of mind have a bruised ego. You got very little support when you needed that has shown us love and luck and harmony as well as help, but your defiance and your dedication has paid you off on this fear, bad luck and discord. We have accepted the good occasion in many other ways. Planetary changes illuminate what you the bad and the ugly and we have sung out loud in our have done, and done well, surely that’s all that matters right now? souls and cried ourselves to sleep in pity. Something, your sleeve, and no ulterior motive to your endeavours. Someone maybe, so very special that it was organised for us, but never by us. Something that, however strange, became has been testing you of late, and without a doubt you have passed the start of something new, or the ending of something with flying colours, so what exactly comes to you next? old. Maybe we were in the right place at the right time Libran power embraces the symbolism of love and the mystery of all passions this week as your heart is open and communicative. Gone is or the wrong place at the right time, and this fatalistically Saturn enters into your opposing sign of Scorpio early this week, and this stirs things up quite nicely in the current scheme of things. Practicalities are vital to maintain at present, and blame your stubborn streak that you have stuck to the rules for good reason. A reason that someone neither accepts or believes in, so do your own thing.
the hurt and the pain of the past and here enters the delicate balance of your innermost soul, full of longing and a need for fulfilment in all ways as you gingerly leave your cards on the table to be played.
Beware a false friend this week as you begin to piece together something that implicates and distresses. There are some things best thrashed out once and for all, and taking the helm of a sticky situation at least allows you your say in the proceedings. Saturn by your side has the wisdom to show you a new alternative and guide you there. You have started, so you will finish, but your instinct tells you that trouble is brewing and avoidance is the best way out. The indecisive energies of a dreamy Pisces greatly influences the momentum of a storm in a teacup and whilst someone could do with a sharp pinch back into reality, why does this have to involve you? Pluto is in analytical mind and tearing some plan into little pieces so that every step of the way can be examined. It is not what you want or need right now. In fact if the challenge comes to you this week do not take a back seat, and show others who await your distress, that you are not to be messed with, not now or ever! Changes have allowed you to adopt a much wider view of life, and time is on your side. As you nostalgically see the past in context you cannot regret anything that you have done, and can stop to marvel all the good you have showed to others. Enjoy making plans and see that you rightly deserve to feature in them. Both a mighty Neptune and a questioning Uranus cross your path this week. Where there is conflict there will be peace, and where there is anger in someone close to you, let there be peace once and for all. Your own life appears to be out there on the back burner, but in all context you have bigger fish to fry right now.

If it’s your birthday this week
saw things happen that shaped or moulded our lives, sent us on journeys across the World, or allowed us to fall hopelessly in love. I have to say that I believe in love at first sight. My work has seen many examples of those brought together with a partner, against all odds, and then a catalytic energy of partnership ignites a new future flame and a common destiny, as if by magic. Love is a challenge and life just a part of the bargain of our existence, come what may. Coincidence, if that’s what you want to call it, can make grand sweeping gestures into our ambition, our forward plans and the rest of our life. Spiritual Guidance brings the right people together and makes the right decisions that bring about the fulfilment of destiny and the onward journeys of our lives. Spirit has the subtle ability of making Spiritual chances seem so easy. Just like magic. Spirit is a magical unseen force, a feeling that you should catch the next train but not the one you planned to. A hunch says to go to a party you had refused the invitation to. To wear the red dress, to walk home a different way. If you open your heart to this magic and believe that you are a part of it then the rest will be taken good care of by Spirit. They have the blueprint of our lives and they see what we need and how best we can get it, and why we have to do things the hard way sometimes. Nothing ever worth it comes easy and then along comes fate to shape us towards the destiny of the soul. It is what we inhabit this Earth for, our very reason to be here at such a challenging and inspirational time, and it is the herald for the rest of our lives. Trust in Spirit to know just what we want when we need it, and if we don’t get it then show us how to need what we want when we get it some other way, or make us a better offer!

KENNY I have wondered for a long time when I can return to my spiritual ways once more. So much lately has caused me to think that if there is such a thing as life after death then why do my departed loved ones seem to not want to talk to me? I have tried all ways but I have got nowhere. Alison F. Alison do not give up faith. There is a timescale between this World and the next that allows for settling in and taking a rightful place. It is Catch 22 to find that your loved ones cannot settle on the other side, and you cannot settle things on this side. I think the sooner you return to your spiritual energies the better, for you and them. If you are not yourself then you are not using your natural gifts right now. Maybe you need to tune yourself more before making contact. Give your loved ones a date and a time and tell them where you will be, because this helps both ways. If you give up you are walking away from a gift that appears to just need to develop a little more. Keep me in touch with what you do, keep your faith high on the agenda, and if you have questions do not hesitate to contact me.
Cut through any red tape and show what you are made of. These are changing and yet exhilarating times and you can’t be bogged down with issues that shouldn’t concern you, when there are priorities out there to be dealt with.

Brian Deller Author of Motoring in Spain
AFTER COMMENTING on the need to be legal in respect of driving in Spain I am surprised that Brian Deller in his article of 24th May is discussing the possibility of ignoring the requirement to declare one’s worldwide assets. I assume he is aware of the punitive financial implications of such actions as indicated in your paper on 26th April. R Tidbal
Brian says: Mr Tidbal is referring to a comment from me where I mention a recent friendly discussion amongst some expats and Spanish amigos, where the Spanish Govt. is demanding that we all supply full details of all assets over 50,000€ kept anywhere in the World. The details have to be sent on-line to the Agencia Tributaria (Tax Offices) using a ‘Certificado de Usario, digital signature’. The full explanation on what this is and how to obtain one is in my book, Third Edition pages 246 to 249. As most expats I have spoken to have no idea what that is, they will, if they obey the demand, use a gestor. The demand is for all of us, citizens in Spain, to submit a detailed list of all assets, including where they are, of worldwide assets to the Agencia Tributaria with the deadline of 31st April (now past). I have had a long time principal which has stood me well over the years. It is ‘Trust Nobody’,
and in this case I quote the recent example in Cyprus where the beleaguered Cyprus Govt. through its own mis-management is in a similar situation to several other EU countries, including Spain, where they are having to negotiate massive loans from the IMF or wherever they can get the cash to continue paying the national bills including wages etc. Cyprus ‘clipped’ a reported 20% off most savings accounts including those of foreigners now living there, an action which to most of us should be illegal, as the savings are the results of years of hard work so that the savers can have a reasonable life in retirement. As taxes have been paid on the savings, the anger is apparent and will get worse if the Spanish Govt. tries to do it here. Recent history shows that expats have legally bought properties complying with the Spanish only to have them declared illegal. The expats then have to pay to have them demolished. And one known couple in this position spent years in the Spanish Courts to win their case, only to be awarded a fraction of the costs they had incurred in building their property. When the local ayuntamiento had to pay the reported meagre 30,000€, it claimed it could not afford to! Meanwhile the Priors are living as they have been now for five years in the garage of their destroyed property with no running water or electricity. With this in mind our discussion centred on
the extreme unfairness of the Spanish authorities who can trample ordinary law-abiding folk underfoot and go unpunished for their lack of natural justice. If you have property in Spain, you as an expat are in a difficult position as you cannot just leave unless you abandon the property. There are, we read, 800,000 empty properties in Spain, many new but unfinished. So the discussion revolved around fighting back and refusing to just lie down and die. There are organisations of affected expats who are fighting the confiscation/destruction of ‘legally built’ properties with licences issued etc. in the EU Courts but as we know, not only is it an expansive task, it takes perhaps years for decisions but good luck to them we all said. If of course the UK has the long promised referendum on being in the EU and votes to leave, that is going to present massive problems for us all. So, Richard, our discussion was as above and I still am in order as far as the motoring laws here are concerned and fear no roadside stops: our taxes have been paid. The massive penalties for not obeying the assets revealing demand are a great risk, but again, we all have a choice. Put legal assets, mostly cash, in safe places where the Agencia Tributaria cannot touch it with embargoes on accounts, or risk the confiscation anyway when Spain decides to grab large percentages of such accounts as well as risking massive rioting in the streets by very upset savers. That is the one opinion we discussed. What do other expats think? Resist the unfair grabs or roll over and die broke?
There is much more detailed information on all motoring subjects in my book. Brian Juan (John) Deller, Malaga, author, ‘Motoring in Spain’ www.spainvia.com. Let’s get out there NOEL’S WORLD OF GOLF By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Alicante Golf 639 730 891
SUMMER HAS been a long time coming this year and although we have had an extremely mild winter despite the number of high winds, the warmth we expect at this time of the year is yet to arrive. The result is that our golf courses are in extremely good condition and great places to be when nature has done her best to provide the beautiful surroundings we enjoy in south eastern Spain. Now that most of the travelling golfers from northern Europe have gone home for the summer we will have much quieter golf courses than they have been for many months. For some this will be great news. From a selfish point of view we can now get around the golf course in less than half a day and prices have dropped to a level that is approaching acceptable. It is time to take advantage if you want to play golf. Many expatriates will not want to play golf through the heat of summer but if you use a buggy and drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages the golf can be very enjoyable, particularly the pint afterwards in frozen glasses containing ice cold beer. All of our golf clubs now have special offers for
golfers such as two-for-one on green fees with buggies included. Those who are sensible will also have special deals available for summer membership and this is a great way to secure playing privileges for what should be a highly competitive price. Society golfers in particular whose societies don’t play through summer will be at a loss for competitive golf but by taking advantage of the special offers available now they will continue to get their fix of competition throughout the summer and be able to keep their games sharp at the same time. RTN Golf Club will run a summer league for the third consecutive summer in July and August and this will be open to all golfers who have a handicap and will be based on providing friendly and competitive golf for those who wish to play. The emphasis will be on beating the golf course and not one another although we don’t want to diminish any competitive spirit that some of our players will always have. This summer we will be based at Alicante Golf where all golfers will get a buggy to be able to relax between shots and enjoy the wonderful wildlife and flowers that surround the golf course. Keep an eye on RTN next week when we
will be able to release full details of our plans: any suggestions can be sent to golf@roundtownnews.com and all will be given serious consideration. iT is not very often that a golfer has two exceptional weeks in a row when playing with rTN Golf Club but it happened to Wayne McDonnell last week as he became our first two time winner of the season with consecutive victories at our weekly meeting. On what must surely be the best championship golf course in the area our members once again found the greens the biggest challenge. The greenkeeper at Alicante Golf has found some very deceptive pin positions for the flags in recent weeks and this week was no exception as numerous times we witnessed golfers scratching their heads as putts seemed to defy gravity and run up the slopes and away from the hole on what are perfect putting surfaces. Once again scoring was impressive as three players broke par with Wayne McDonnell taking the Ashworth polo for the second consecutive week with a score of 40 stableford points. With two weeks of handicap cuts it will now be very interesting to see if Wayne can cope with his new low handicap and the winding up he is sure to receive next week. This week there was no winner of our twos pot so this week we will see a rollover just a little less in value than the National Lottery. suMMer GOLf Next week we hope to be in a position to announce our plans for July and August. We anticipate running a pairs better ball league through the summer and have secured an unbelievable price from Alicante Golf for our members to play six games of golf over an eight week period. hopefully we will be able to have three winners; best pair, best mixed pair and best single sex pair. The overall winners will be presented with our summer Trophy on the final day at Alicante Golf. Seve’s Little Gem in Alicante By Peter Taylor HAVING PLAYED my first game of golf at the tender age of thirteen way up there in bonnie Scotland, an event that is something of a ‘rite of passage’ I might add, I have been smitten with the game ever since. I’ve hit many a ‘scunker’ of a shot along the way and some good stuff as well thankfully, but as is always the case, when it comes to playing the game of golf it is the course you play on that dictates the amount of enjoyment you have. Getting out on the course after watching the great players of the day on TV fizzing remarkable shots onto the green and making huge putts has always been my personal source of inspiration, and there was none greater at getting me on the phone and chasing round a few pals for a game than the mercurial Severiano Ballesteros. I first saw him play when he was nineteen in a small tournament in southern England and I recall seeing his flashing smile through the huge crowd that was following his match. A month or so later Seve became a household name when at still only 19 he tied for second in the 1976 British Open alongside the mighty Jack Nicklaus. In the latter part of his sparkling career after winning 5 Majors and almost single-handedly creating the European Tour, Seve went into designing golf courses and thirteen years ago the great man cut the tape at the grand open-
Alicante golf course
ing of Alicante Golf in the heart of the town, a course I played last Tuesday. And Seve´s flamboyant personality is stamped all over the 18 holes. Situated close to Alicante’s harbour area, the course gives you a wonderful surprise as you move from hole to hole through the handsome properties around and about. There are also spectacular water features and beautifully kept fairways, greens and bunkers by one of Spain’s top green keepers, and as ordinary as I played, I didn’t have one bad lie. And the news just keeps getting bet-
ter. Our illustrious newspaper started the RTN Golf Club three years ago and has put together a package each one of you can take advantage of, where you can play on this magnificent golf course for just 40 euros … and that includes a buggy as well! … There is no better value for money on the Costas. I would like to thank Noel Eastwell, the course professional, for the welcome he gave me on the day. His level of enthusiasm for the future of Alicante Golf suggests you really should make your way there and see it for yourself.

Giving4giving charity golf
A CHARITY golf day was organised by Steve Bailey of The Paradiso Bar in Finestrat on Thursday 30th May on behalf of the Giving 4 Giving charity in aid of children with cancer. The event was enthusiastically supported by more than 40 golfers with a good subscription from the Union Jack Bar Golf Society amongst others. The Sierra Aitana Poninte course, while being a bit shorter than your average course, can be very unforgiving if you stray off the correct line as I found to my cost on far too many holes (if they gave a prize for most balls lost, I would have won hands down). Prizes were given, however, for a variety of achievements and the sponsors were very generous in their donations. While there were too many winners to name individually, the biggest winner was Giving 4 Giving, receiving a cheque for 280€. Thanks must go to Steve Bailey (Bar Paradiso) Dave Edwards (MBE Builders) John Drummond (Jolly Johns Pool Services) and of course all those who took part.
Fishing Maggots End Exciting tournament for Rojales Netball Club by
ROJALES NETBALL Club hosted teams from London, Valencia and Quesada in their Inaugral Tournament on Saturday, 18. The first match of the day saw Quesada take on London which finished in a 13-2 victory for the visitors. In the second match Rojales themselves took on Valencia with shooters Jackie and Sam converting the majority of their shots in the first half and Tracey and Claire in defence making some great interceptions enabling an 8-3 win to Rojales. Then it was the local derby of Rojales -v- Quesada. Both teams know each other’s game well so Rojales called on their greater experience resulting in a Rojales win 8-1. Rojales then faced the Londoners in an exciting game where Rojales had to change their way of defensive play several times. Despite Rojales playing their best netball London took the game 13-5. Quesada v Valencia saw all of Quesada’s facing a challenge, the ball going up and down the court at a ferocious pace with Quesada’s 2-1 win reflecting the closest game of the tournament. The overall tournament winners were London with Rojales the runners-up. The presentation ceremony followed with both the Mayor and the Sports Councillor of Rojales in attendance to hand over ‘Best Team Players’ trophies to Sophie of Quesada and Tracey of Rojales and the Winner’s trophy plus individual medals to the overseas visitors. This was followed by thank you gifts to the umpires, Mary and Debbie and the results secretary, Lynn. If you are interested in playing netball, contact Tracey on 679 539 995. Rojales Netball Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Rojales Town Hall for their continued support.

THIS WEEK saw the club at the Embalse de Argos for the 5th round of the Summer League. The day started off with a breeze in the morning but come midday the wind got up with a vengeance making bait presentation very difficult. Again there were several good weights but the majority of the field struggled for bites. Doug Hornblow had a good and bad day. A good day as he won the match, but a bad day that as the wind picked up so did his pole and his no 6 section is now confined to the depths of Argos! TOP RODS ON THE DAY 1st - Doug (Welsh Goldminer) Hornblow fishing the feeder using banded pellet with 41.08 kilos 2nd - Lenny (Ex Cultural Attachee) Bolton fishing the pole using paste and feeder using maggot with 31.66 kilos 3rd - Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the feeder using maggot with 23.06 kilos
PLEASE NOTE The club has some vacancies at present: if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 96 672 9293 or 603 535 771.
ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS: Supplied by Terry Screen The 10th and penultimate match of the Spring Series was fished at Nancy’s on 28th May. The water is still flowing fast below the boon and these are still some of the best pegs on the water for the bigger weights. Dave Hoare made the best of one of these pegs with a winning weight of 13.990kg: most anglers when fishing these pegs use a feeder, but Dave used his prowess with the pole using a 5gram lollipop to gain top weight. Fishing above the boon was hard with no flow, but even so out of the nineteen fishing there were only two dry nets.
1st - Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare with 13.990kg fishing the pole using maggot 2nd - Mick (The Arsenal) Hill with 7.860kg fishing the pole using pellet and corn 3rd - Dave (The Sweetie man) Hutchinson with 7.67 kilo´s fishing the pole using pellet and paste WARNING To all anglers fishing in the Murcia region, especially the Town waters: unless you are fishing in an officially booked contest we have been advised that you must not use a keep net and if you are caught doing so there is a 200€ fine. We were visited by the Police last Saturday on the town water where we were pleasure fishing and they checked all our licences and ID etc. All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368.
