Train tragedy AT LEAST 78 people have been killed and more than 140 wounded in Spain’s worst rail crash in 40 years.

The Renfe high speed train servicing the route between Madrid and Ferrol was carrying 220 passengers when it derailed on the curve at the entrance to Angrois station at 8.45pm on Wednesday evening, approximately 4km from the main Santiago station.

Heading back to black

DEBTS CONTINUE to tumble at the seaside resort of Javea – strict control of purse strings achieving the highest reduction at any town hall across Spain.

Finance chief Oscar Anton inherited a debt of 48.2 million Euros – attracting interest payments of more than 1.5 million Euros a year - when a coalition government under Mayor Jose Chulvi took office in 2011.

Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Finance, he has used sound financial management and tough cost cutting measures over two years to reduce the debt by 15 million Euros, leaving Javea 32.7 million Euros in the red.

Mr Anton, who is president of party Xabia Democratica, said the target was to halve the deficit by the end of the coalition’s term in office – but was happy to add that things were going well. “Maybe it will be below 24 million Euros at the end of this term, but at the moment that is our target.” The councillor said: “All parties in Javea have been working together to put things straight, which

has been very important. We can go on from here, now we have established a sound financial base without having to reduce services by too much, we are in a strong position to move forward. “The balance sheet still shows a debt but we have reduced it considerably since I took over the Finance Department.

“The aim of the coalition is to have reduced the debt by half at the end of our four years and to have a sound economy in the town.

Yes, we are still paying interest on our debt but it is nothing like the colossal amount we inherited.”

GRANTS Mr Anton has also found success in winning grants and subsidies to provide council coffers with extra income – a highly competitive area as other town halls are applying for the cash.

He trawls lists of grant income available from the likes of the Valencia Government, the provincial government in Alicante, and central government in Madrid – researches the requirements to qualify and spends hours filling in paperwork before lobbying paymasters.

Sea of green

By Jack Troughton SOARING TEMPERATURES along the Costa Blanca have left Calpe’s salt lake Las Salinas covered in a thick carpet of green algae. Hot weather triggers the natural phenomenon and the algae multiplies on the surface because of the lack of circulation of water in the lake – home to rare species of wildlife and a protected area. Sea water is pumped into the wetlands for 20 hours every day to maintain levels in

“Most of the time we are not the only municipality that qualifies for these monies so there is nearly always competition. It is tough times we are in, and sure, every town wants a share of the grants available from higher governments.

“I don’t like to give in, and what I do is for the people of Javea so it is very important that I do my best and win these bids. Often it is a long process and we have to insure we talk to the right people at the right time.”

The most notable victory was the 2 million Euros invested by Valencia in regenerating

Grants are for specific purposes and most recently have totalled 141,568€ - including money for home help services, cash to help unemployed people receive an income, support for carers, and a grant of 18,790€ under a programme that allows EU students studying for degrees in tourism to work in the town’s tourist offices during the summer – giving them valuable experience and providing Javea with extra staff during the peak season.

A lucky fisherman!

A CALP fisherman was fished out of the sea after he fell off his boat, the trawler Cantares de Calp, 25 miles offshore. His disappearance went unnoticed by the rest of the crew who failed to hear his screams above the noise of the boat’s engines. He trod water for a full two hours before being rescued after a large scale search was launched by a helicopter assisted by the local fishing community. 38-year-old Giner Jaime Calvo is an experienced sailor. He was on the bridge in calm waters when he slipped on the deck and tumbled into the sea. After a full two hours in the water he was spotted by a fishing vessel that had joined the search. Calvo arrived back in port at 4.30 on Tuesday afternoon, exhausted and emotional but otherwise unharmed, expressing his gratitude to all those who participated in his rescue.

Death toll rises in Santiago de Compostela

by Jan Gamm Survivors and eye witnesses have reported that the train took the curve at an unusually high speed immediately before the crash.

Sources close to the investigation say the train was travelling at more than twice the recommended speed limit on the sharp curve, estimating a speed of 220kph in an 80kph zone.

The train convoy broke into sections with all eight carriages derailed. One of the carriages climbed an embankment, landing close to residential buildings nearby. Fire broke out and those survivors able to move had to clamber over the dead to escape.

Passenger Ricardo Montesco said: “A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the wagons to get out, realising the train was burning ... I was in the second wagon and there was fire ... I saw corpses.”

As cranes continue to work on the wreckage it is certain that more fatalities will be discovered.

BLOOD DONORS Clinics in Santiago, overwhelmed by the number of casualties, made an immediate appeal for blood donors. Local residents responded by queuing outside blood centres from early Thursday morning. And local hotels are arranging free accommodation for relatives of the victims.

among the dead, repeating: “What am I going to do, what am I going to do?”

Renfe is facing criticism as it failed to issue a press release until three hours after the accident, only then reporting it as a ‘derailment’, without any indication of the seriousness of the disaster. At the time of going to press, investigators are yet to locate the train’s ‘black box’ that could determine the cause of the accident. Renfe officials have so far refused to comment on the cause of the crash, other than to make assurances that the victims of the disaster were their main priority for the time being.

Emergency telephone number 900 101 660 has been set up for enquiries relating to the crash.

CONDOLENCES The traditional fiesta de Santiago due to commence yesterday, Thursday, was cancelled until further notice.

The Archbishop of Santiago, Julián Barrio, added his condolences to those of King Juan Carlos and also Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was born in Santiago: “In the face of a tragedy such as just happened in Santiago de Compostela on the eve of its big day, I can only express my deepest sympathy as a Spaniard and a Galician,” he said.

As messages of condolence pour into Spain from around the world, the Spanish royal family have suspended their agenda for the next few days and seven days of mourning have been declared in the surrounding Galicia region.

Rajoy’s gaffe in midst of rail disaster

By Jan Gamm SPAIN’S PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy just can’t get it right, it seems.

On Thursday Rajoy thoughtfully sent his condolences to the families of the victims of the Santiago rail disaster, assuring them that the central government executive and regional government in Galicia were mobilizing all resources following Spain’s biggest rail crash in 40 years.

Kind and supportive sentiments from Spain’s premier: the only problem was that Rajoy had failed to omit the final paragraph from his ‘cut and paste’ message, thus concluding: “I want to convey my deepest condolences for the loss of life and material damage brought by the earthquake that took place this morning in Gansu.”

The message had obviously been snipped from another forwarded by the prime minister’s office on 22nd July to the victims of the earthquake that shook China’s north-west Gansu province, killing at least 75 people and leaving more than 400 others injured.

The blunder sent a wave of criticism through internet social sites and prompted comments such as: ‘Typical Rajoy – completely insensitive and tactless’ and: ‘What an embarrassment. The victims of neither disaster should be subjected to this bungling and idiotic rambling. The PP should be ashamed.”

Calpe has a lotta bottle

RECYCLING GLASS in the coastal town of Calpe is saving the town hall 90,000€ a year – and helping reduce the annual ‘basura’ or bin tax.

Despite less bottles being deposited in bins, the Marina Alta resort recycles an average of 32kg per person annually – the national average is 15kg per head.

Councillor Carole Saunders is delighted with the result and believes with “an extra effort” from residents and visitors looking for a bottle bank, savings “could easily” top 100,000€ a year.

She added: “People say our success is because we are a tourist town but Spain is a tourist country so more could be done in other towns – for example, how many people go on holiday to Barcelona?

“The amount of glass collected has actually fallen because there are less foreign visitors and because people are not buying as many bottles but we are still recycling over double the national average.”

The town hall is also investing in more “yellow” bins, used for recycling tins and cartons – known in Spain as ‘bricks’. It is hoped this will help improve current savings of around 30,000€ a year.

However, there are problems with garden rubbish in Calpe’s urbanisations. The town hall runs a campaign asking householders to tie up or bag such waste and put it out on set days depending on locality.

“At the moment we do have a serious problem with this,” added Mrs Saunders. “And because we are being fined it needs to be addressed.

“We have found people are simply dumping garden rubbish and in certain places it has become an eyesore.”

She said professional gardeners and handymen were supposed to take garden rubbish to a site in neighbouring Benissa for recycling – and appealed for anyone spotting rubbish simply being dumped to contact the Green Brigade on 900 204 050.

By Jack Troughton GENEROUS MEMBERS of Javea’s New Country Line Dancers have made a donation to APASA, the animal charity caring for abandoned and stray dogs.

The charity’s shelter is full with hundreds of dogs and pressure grows – last week 16 puppies arrived all desperately needing foster homes.

The line dancers held their Summer Social at the Inn on the green, Javea.

Good food and drink and enjoyable music, together with a raffle and lots of dancing helped raise money for the animals and a cheque was presented to APASA’S Maggie Shuck.

Top result for Noa Best foot A SUCCESSFUL campaign to collect plastic bottle tops across the Marina Alta will help an eight-year-old Calpe girl who suffered brain damage after contracting meningitis.

by Jack Troughton Organised by Calpe Town Hall, 4,160kg of tops were collected over six months and delivered to recycling company Acteco in Ibi, where they sold for 800€.

The money will go towards buying a new wheelchair and orthopaedic splints for Noa, her family needs around 4,000€ for the equipment.

Bottle tops and container caps were collected at different points across Calpe – at schools, the town hall, the casa de cultura, the Mayte Boronet centre and the health centre – and the appeal was joined by a number of different municipalities, including Benissa, Teulada-Moraira, Jalon, Lliber, Beniarbeig, Javea, Denia, Benitachell, Agost and Sant Joan.

Calpe’s Councillor for Citizen Participation Carole Saunders said the town hall became involved to co-ordinate the campaign to help Noa and praised the “solidarity” shown by neighbouring towns.

She urged people to keep collecting plastic tops from a range of goods – such as shampoos, creams, washing up liquid and detergents – to keep recycling for cash.

Concert aids flood victims

By Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF Women in Business were invited to Denia’s Centro de Menores – the Children’s Care Home in Led Rotes – to wish a fond farewell to director Juan Antonio.

He has been at the centre since it was started and is moving to another home to continue his hard work.

And networking group WIB was also rewarded with thanks for its ongoing donations to the centre – including providing shoes for the youngsters as the seasons change.

This time Candy Wright presented 17 pairs of summer sandals = and will now be searching for bargains to find shoes for next winter.

The centre, which is also supported by U3A of Denia, Rotarians, Careline Theatre, and an El Cid auction, was described as a “lovely and happy place”.

Visitors were shown “happy and smiling faces” during a film featuring the activities of the youngsters over the last 12 months.

COSTA BLANCA musicians are staging a benefit ‘Rock against the Flood’ to help victims of the floods that devastated areas of Germany and Austria. Six bands made up of people from five nations are playing for free on Tuesday 6th August insuring a truly international flavour to the concert at Font Santa, Teulada Moraira.

The fun starts at 6pm and appearing on stage are: The Poco Loco Steel Band; Freeway; Big Jack’s Rhythm and Bluesband; Chillout Chiana featuring Groovy Graham; Alpentrio; and Mar and the Waves.

One of the organisers Hans Hieser – aka Big Jack – said: “Entrance to the concert is free but it is hoped the audience will make donations to the disaster appeal.”

The venue is close to the kart racing track and refreshments, including German beer, will be on sale to raise money for the flood victims.

Lightning strikes Ryanair A RYANAIR flight to Alicante had to be diverted to Glasgow Prestwick shortly after taking off from Edinburgh on Tuesday night after it was struck by lightning. The plane landed at Prestwick at 7.20pm and was checked by engineers before taking off again for Alicante at 9pm.

A Ryanair spokesman said: “Ryanair sincerely apologises to passengers affected by this short delay. However, the safety of our passengers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority.”

THE NATIONAL Police have taken a campaign to the social networks aimed specifically at young holiday makers. The campaign warns of the risks of excessive consumption of alcohol, partaking in extreme sports and indulging in irrational behaviour such as ‘balconing’.

The police also advise vigilance over personal belongings, and discretion when taking photographs to be posted on social networks. The safety tips have been broadcast through Twitter, Myspace, Facebook and YouTube in Castilian and English.

Suffragette joins vote protest

by Jack Troughton BATTLING TO insure a voice for expats in Spain is a direct descendant of Emmeline Pankhurst – a leader of the Suffragette movement who fought for votes for British women almost a century ago.

Margaret Hales MBE, she won the honour in 1997 for services to politic, has lived on the Costa Blanca for seven years with husband Gerald. Under the 15 year rule, they can vote in UK elections for another eight years.

A distant relative of Emmeline – Margaret is a cousin of Dr Helen Pankhurst who is the great grand-daughter of the Suffragette – she has become a leading force in the Europe wide campaign calling on the British Government to restore the vote to people living abroad.

The British public next go to the ballot box to vote in a General Election in 2015 but the protest has gained extra-momentum with a private members bill calling for a straight ‘in-out’ referendum on European Union membership – without any assurances how the rights of people who took advantage of the EU’s freedom of movement

And campaigners maintain it was “shocking” Parliament chose to forget the 1.4 million Brits living in Europe who would be must directly affected should the UK pull out of the EU. Margaret has already written to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg about the voting issue – the letter was read out in a Parliamentary debate – and given evidence to a Lords Committee on overseas voting. She said at present there was a “somewhat tortuous” procedure for those entitled to vote to actually register – possibly why only around 19,000 had seen through the paperwork.

“In the seven years we have lived here the difficulties for British expats have increased – difficulties created by our own government. Increased passport charges, problems in transferring to the Spanish tax system, now Winter Fuel Allowance, and to cap it all a Referendum in which thousands of Brits can’t vote and they are the ones whose lives will be seriously and critically affected,” she said.

She added the government’s financial policy of Quantitative Easing had reduced the value of sterling and devalued expat pensions. “This is not about what the colour of government there is in Parliament, I just believe that British expats are being stung by the British Government.”

Margaret believes she has inherited from Emmeline Pankhurst a strong

sense of service to the community and a wish to bring people closer to democratic government.

“My family were feisty people but we did not know why we had feisty blood in pour veins until a few years ago when we discovered the Pankhurst family connection,” she said. “I will not stop fighting for democracy, universal suffrage and open government.”

Fellow campaigner Brian Cave, who lives in France, said when the Referendum Act was debated in Parliament earlier this month only one MP asked what would happen to expats - those without a vote.

Martin Horwood, Liberal democrat MP for Cheltenham, said 1.4 million expats “whose lives will be fundamentally affected by this change.....will be disenfranchised in this referendum.”

Brian said: “No other MP took up the point Martin Horwood made. The silence is shocking. “It is absolutely essential that British citizens resident in mainline Europe have a voice. The lives of thousands, including mine, could be seriously changed if Britain pulls out of the EU. Why do the MPs in Westminster ignore us? We have no political voice.”

LEAP-FROGGING HIS way to become third in line to the British throne, the country went Royal crazy this week as George Alexander Louis was born at London’s St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.

The delighted Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – William and Kate in more familiar terms – presented their son to waiting crowds of press and public outside the hospital’s private Lindo Wing where the Duchess gave birth to the 8lb 6oz baby.

His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge remained calm - actually asleep - during his first public appearance, despite triggering a worldwide frenzy in newspapers, magazine and television. Celebrating the birth of a future king, red-top tabloid The Sun even renamed itself ‘The Son’ for the day.

Speculation about a name for a future monarch remained high until yesterday (Thursday) when it was revealed the couple had chosen very traditional royal names. However, there is a determination to give young George a modern upbringing in what has been tagged “Project Normal Child’.

British Ambassador Giles Paxman said he was delighted to congratulate the Royal couple on behalf of all British nationals living in Spain – around 800,000 people. In a letter to the Duke and Duchess, he wrote: “On behalf of the many British subjects living in Spain, I have the honour and pleasure to send our warmest congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their first child. “At this important moment in our history of our nation we celebrate the arrival of a new member of the Royal Family and respectfully offer our very best wishes for the health and happiness of Their Royal Highnesses and their baby boy.”

Nice little earner

MY WIFE was in a pension scheme when she was working but when she retired we had a little more money to add to our pensions. She passed away two years ago, God rest her soul, and that entitled me to half of her pension. Thank you very much. I think it was for the duration of 15 years, but alas last week, I found that the amount put into my bank was £8,864.38. But the gross total was £11,080.38.

I thought we lived in a democracy, but the government has changed the rules - if the capital value is less than £18,000 they can pay you in one lump sum once the payment pension is finished. Osborne knows what he is up to - if I was getting the money per year it was £939 plus my state pension - it still wasn’t enough per year to pay tax but by making me take a lump sum it has cost me £2,216 in tax, a nice little earner for the Chancellor.

How many more people is he taking money off? It should be tax-free. My wife paid that out of earnings at 76-years-old. Who needs Osborne as your Chancellor by the way? I live in Spain at 65. I should have been getting heating allowance - that wasn’t forthcoming till last year but not backdated, just £200. That’s another £2,000 they have had out of me. We went without when we were young for what we got. We never got any hand outs and although I lived in Spain I still paid voluntary contributions, so I could have a full pension when I was 65.

I am telling you this because when you get old they still want your money, every bit of it if they had the chance and they wouldn’t even pay your pension if they could get away with it.

Recent change in Valencia region IT HAS been drawn to our attention that a recent change has occurred within the region of Valencia regarding the law concerning recognition of ITV certificates. If your car is registered with an address that is within the Community of Valencia, the ITV check-up must be performed by a recognised ITV station within the region.

Police have instructions to fine car owners who are not complying with this law. You must instruct the garage charged with obtaining your ITV certificate to use only those ITV stations within the region, such as Torrevieja or San Bartolomé (Orihuela) otherwise you will face not only the fine but will also have to have your car re-inspected at the local ITV Station.

Fines have started to be imposed in spite of the absence of publicity in this matter.

Spanish laws?

IN 1965, in my hometown in Massachusetts, three friends and I were playing cards while having a few beers in a local pub. All of us were at least 21 except one when suddenly the ‘dreaded’ ABC (Alcohol Beverage Commission) appeared requesting valid identification of all customers present in the bar. Result: The bar was closed for three days and our under-aged friend’s driver’s license was revoked for one year. The bar was closed because the owner had never asked to see our 20-year-old friend’s ID and his driver’s license taken away because he refused to take a ‘Breathalyzer Test’. Rather strong, right? But the Law is the Law, in 1965 and now. Nobody in The US under 21 years of age can have access to alcoholic beverages. Citizens can vote at 18 but cannot legally drink until they’re 21. And here in Spain with its famous ‘bottellones’ and rampant drinking under age at just 13 and 14? What’s the ‘state of health’ of Spanish Laws lately?

Cycle groups and riders I WANT to put something on the letters page asking your readers for help. My name is Gary and I run the La Nucia Cancer Charity Support shop. I am looking for local cycle groups and riders who may like to help out with a charity cycle ride for a breast cancer society based in Benidorm. The bikes and transport are provided free so all you have to do is get sponsored and have a fun day out.

Unbelievable but true IT IS unbelievable but true: everybody will have noticed that on the week starting 8th and ending 14th July, the sign: ‘ZONA DE ADIESTRAMIENTO’ (Dog Training Zone) was shown on the left side of the light house in the natural park of Sierra Gela and on the right side: ‘COTO PRIVADO DE CAZA’ (Private hunting zone).

This means that rabbits and partridges will disappear… why is this allowed?

Beside the disappearance of all sorts of animals it will be a danger for cyclists and children… in fact for everybody along

this pleasant walk to the light house and back. It is a crazy thing! I have written to the mayor of Alfaz del Pí, Vicente Arqués, yet no answer has been received. Who is to blame for this crazy idea?

I want this to be published in the English newspapers in order to make everyone aware of the situation.

English, Dutch, Norwegian, German, French, Russian and Spanish people must find a solution beginning with finding the culprit, i.e. those responsible for this decision, authorizing the training of dogs and

a public beauty spot to be used as a private hunting preserve, permitting hunters to shoot all kinds of animals.

As a Spaniard I need the help of all the people living with us, the ones who love nature, the ones who want the Natural Park of Sierra Gela to remain without dogs being on the loose, dogs with hunters and hunters with guns - it is dangerous and must be prevented.

Forest fire alert

by Jack Troughton EMERGENCY TEAMS across the country are on high alert for forest fires and the British Consulate in Alicante has issued advice to expats and visitors on how to react in the event of a blaze.

Tinder dry vegetation and wind can spread flames at an alarming rate and it is vital people take immediate action to prevent the devastation that can be caused by fire.

Consul Paul Rodwell met with Irene Rodriguez, Director of Emergencies for the Valencia Community, to discuss how to react in the event of a fire. Her five top tips are: 1. Do not light any fires when it is prohibited during the dry season. Check with town halls for rules and regulations.

2. Call 112 immediately to report a forest fire.

Operators speak English.

3. Do not attempt to fight a fire under any circumstances; forest fires travel at incred-

ible speed and people could put themselves at great risk.

4. Evacuate homes if told to do so by Spanish authorities. Do not return home until advised by the relevant authorities that it is safe.

5. Read the Valencian government’s fire prevention manual in English for more detail on the above.

Nigel Winter, President of SAI Pedralba, was forced to flee his home when a wildfire swept the area west of Valencia and said: “The recent fire in Pedralba highlighted the importance of British residents looking out for each other in case of an emergency. “ I was very impressed by the rapid response from the Valencian fire fighters once the alarm had been raised and was very grateful to be in close contact with the team at the British Consulate.”

Grape harvest survives the hailstorm EARLY INDICATIONS are that grapes in the Novelda region have survived May’s vicious hailstorm that threatened to wipe out this year’s harvest. The ‘bagging process’ to protect the 40 million kilo crop as it matures began on Sunday. The mood in the vineyards is optimistic although farmers say they are crossing their fingers throughout the month-long bagging process and hoping for respite from heavy rain in the run up to the October harvest.

The firm’s head office has always been in Javea Port and the new premises are directly opposite after the Cunningham team ran out of space.

Jennifer Cunningham remains ‘hands on’ at the helm of the company launched in 1992 and is delighted it continues to grow despite the ongoing recession.

Launching the new premises this week, she said it allowed loyal customers to receive an improved service when they came to renew insurance policies.

“We have so many clients staying with us year after year,” she said. “Although we do lose a few, we find they often come back because they find a cheaper price does not automatically offer the cover we can,” she said.

“Cheapest is not always best. Also a lot of other policies come in Spanish – we offer policies in English.”

New record for holiday makers in Spain ACCORDING TO a survey conducted by FRONTUR, Spain hit a new record in June with 6.3 million visiting foreign tourists - an improvement of 5.3% over the same month in 2012. The UK and Germany remained the major source markets, accounting for around 40% of arrivals, but the Nordic market was the main contributor to overall growth.

Hotel stays in June rose by 9.8%. And groups that holidayed without a package tour increased by 10.3%.

Greek tragedy in sculpture AN EXHIBITION of the work of award-winning Spanish sculptor Jorge Castro Florez is currently on show at Teulada Moraira Auditorium.

by Jack Troughton The 40 bronze and wrought iron pieces make up the theme “Miscellaneous or Imaginary Routes” and encompass a reflection on the human state through Greek tragedies and forgotten dances.

During his career, Castro was inspired by social injustice, hopelessness and the failure of man, yet captured the spirit of protest and ‘whispers’ of love and romance.

The exhibition continues until 13th August

marks the second anniversary of the death of the Barcelona born artist and poet who died in July 2011.

The pieces making up the exhibition were completed by Castro between 1980 and 2008 when the artist was mainly living in Canada.

His huge 5.5 metre high iconic bronze ‘Settlement’ can be seen at Playa del Albir although much of his work is held in private collections in Austria, France, England, Holland, Germany, the United States of America, and Canada.

Reach for the sky

By Jack Troughton TAKING OFF at Muchamiel Airfield were 36 members of the North Costa Blanca Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association for a special flying day.

Joining the association on the tarmac was British Consul Paul Rodwell, the branch’s Honorary Vice President, who joined in the fun until official duties took him back to the Alicante Consulate. Organised by branch Vice-President Harry Raven – assisted by ‘cashiers and boarding pass issuers’ Delphine Raven and Margaret Hunt – the event was heralded a major success. Not everyone chose to leave the ground a Cessna 172, those keeping their feet on terra firma were entertained by the planes and helicopters arriving and leaving Muchamiel.

And flying in ideal conditions and an enjoyable lunch meant the event was a success for all those taking part.

Yup, it’s a boy!

BY NATURE television is a fast paced medium; shots sometimes are fleeting seconds. Usually multiple scenes are stacked up one upon the next in an ever changing narrative - usually. However, this week we were prepared to sit and watch, for hours on end, a pair of closed hospital doors.

The private Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital in west London was the backdrop to most of Monday’s viewing - that and a procession of studio-based ‘talking heads’, all putting in their ‘expert’ pennyworth on just what was going behind those doors. But really it was all quite simple: a young married couple were having their first baby. That the baby was to be third in line to the throne of Britain meant the couple had to share their joy with most of the known world.

At the time of writing, Wednesday morning (I’m still hoping the name will be announced before I send this to La Nucia) the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just spent their first night at home with their new baby. Parents, do you remember that?

“Er, love it’s just woken up - again. How much longer will this go on for?” Hmmm about, twenty years, I guess. Yup, there is no going back! As Prince William said to the world’s media, “He’s got a good pair of lungs on him - that’s for sure!”

As the gathered cameras hung on his every word William said, “He’s a big boy, he’s quite heavy.” Acknowledging the hours of waiting endured by the press circus the prince added, “I know how long you’ve all been standing here so hopefully the hospital and you guys can all go back to normal now - and we can go and look after him.” And with those words the TV talking heads were off and away on the subject of who will look after the little fella.

William and Kate are not expected to hire a full time nanny. In the past royal nannies often became substitute mums for the babies but it’s understood that the couple wish to continue the ‘handson’ parenting style of Diana.

Hopefully, now that the couple have presented their baby to the world they might be allowed the same peace that we mere

mortals take for granted after birth of our baby.

I don’t know about you folks but I’m pleased with the continuity the birth of the new baby has guaranteed. Love or not-love the royals, I think they ensure a bit of normality in a constantly shifting world. For one thing it keeps President Cameron’s fizzog off our five pound notes. Can you imagine that? Or even worse, the graven image of Anthony Charles Lynton Blair staring up at you as you offer your hard-earned tenner over the bar at the Brewer’s Arms... No thanks mate, I’ll take me chance with the status quo.

Anyway, putting these puerile politics aside it’s time to celebrate the birth of a child. I hope, dear RTN reader, that you’ll join me and all of the team here at WIB in wishing a long, happy and healthy life to the new baby amongst us.

Please help the community save Paul Cunningham Nurses YOU WOULD hope that after living and working in Spain for years, nothing would surprise Jennifer me. Well, I am more than surprised: I am flabbergasted and for once in my life speechless. by

SO HAVING now recovered my speech I will start with informing you all of a very unpleasant saga which has been ongoing for nearly a year.

Last year, a Social Security officer visited the La Marina charity shop and requested the NIEs and Social Security documents from the volunteers. The ladies did not understand and contacted the Charities accountant who explained carefully and clearly in Spanish that PCN was a Charity, with a fully G-registered charity number, clearly shown on the sign over the door, and this was pointed out to the lady in question, therefore no social security payments have to be made. We were then accused of exploiting human rights by not paying salaries!

The officer then handed us a potential fine of 6,000€ and a demand to bring all the relevant paperwork to Alicante. This we did and felt hopeful that common sense would prevail...

The papers were accepted and the fine withdrawn.

Success you may say… NO, not so, another fine was given to us, this time of 10,000€ for obstructing an officer carrying out her duty. I BEG YOUR PARDON…! The shop was attended by two old aged pensioners who did not speak Spanish! They call this an obstruction?

We appealed twice and heard nothing for some months, hoping that would be the end of the matter. Sadly, last week a registered letter arrived from the Hacienda (tax office) with a fine of 10,000€ plus 2,000€ interest accrued, to be paid within 21 days or the PCN bank account would be embargoed and the money removed. If there were insufficient funds at

the time, any money on deposit in the account would be seized until full payment of the fine, plus any extra interest was fully paid.

Obviously I will continue the fight, and if necessary consider recourse to the European Courts to receive justice.

To enable the nurses to continue with the wonderful and supportive service they offer, caring and being there for the terminally ill and their families, I have set up a fighting fund and I am searching for a Lawyer experienced in this field, who would hopefully be very reasonable with his fees and who could assist us.

There are various ways you can help us. It would be wonderful if there are one or two people who would consider acting as co-coordinators for the fighting fund. We have a special bank account set up for those who would prefer to put in a donation via a bank. This and collection tins, posters and petition forms are available from the Charity Shops and from the Jennifer Cunningham offices. It would also be very helpful if bars, restaurants, clubs or associations could hold a special event in PCN’s name and ladies, how about a coffee morning/ BBQ? I am determined to save my charity with a little help from many of you, to enable us to continue to be there when you need us the most.

PLANT HEATH WHEN CONSIDERING healthy summer plants there are some important issues: Ensure that you purchase healthy plants in the first place.

Unhealthy plants include those already affected by bugs such as geraniums attacked by the geranium moth; plants with burnt leaves from cold spring winds; forced plants susceptible to insect and fungal attacks.

Ensure that the microclimate of your garden or apartment balcony or terrace is suitable for the plants. We have seen some wonderful spring gardens which are a dust bowl with few surviving plants by the end of the summer.

Do not co-plant drought-resistant and thirsty plants. If you do the watering required by the thirsty plants it can waterlog or attract fungal spores and insects to the drought-resistant plants.

Do not over-water and over-feed plants. Naturally grown plants tend to be healthier than the forced growth of over-watered and over-fed plants.

Plant specimens that have natural insect control properties or heath benefits for the family: for instance plant a lemon or rose-scented geranium graveolens plant amongst pots of other varieties of geraniums to deter the geranium moth. 1. Plants that love the sun and are not thirsty such as succulents and cacti.

2. Plants that can survive in full sun but are thirsty and therefore need daily or several times a day watering in the summer – the type of plants that wither when scorching winds blow from north Africa. These include begonias and celosias.

3. Plants that do best in semi-shade, including some of the plants that you used as house plants in northern Europe such as spathiphyllum and dieffenbachias..

4. Plants that can survive in shady areas provided there is some reflected light. Such as aspidistras and tropical ferns.

5. Salt-resistant plants for front line villas and apartments such as aeoniums and portulacas. We often pass a villa which has replaced a small lawn with a mass planting of colourful portulacas.

The number of plants suitable for your own garden terraces and balconies can be expanded by planting shade giving boundary and internal hedges and trees and fitting blinds and awnings.

Horizontal Division Act/Law

THE LEGALITY of the occupation of a common element by one neighbor for his private use in a complex that is governed by the Horizontal Division Act/Law IN MY urbanization there is a neighbor who is occupying a communal space as if it was his own private terrace.

It’s part of the communal space used by all the neighbors to park. He has even put some furniture, chairs, table and an umbrella there. Is that legal? Could we do something?

We understand that: There is communal area for parking. It is not divided and there are no numbers or divisions, and it is not agreed where each neighbor should park. Therefore, all neighbors have the right to park in any part of the parking area. And there is no agreed or recognised right of a private use for any part of this common element.

Also that: One neighbor is occupying permanently a part of this communal parking area, with some furniture, table, chairs, using that area as his private terrace.

As there is not a specific marked, allocated and individual

area to park for each neighbor, a common element cannot be used privately by one owner, exactly as he cannot claim private and exclusive use of a part of the swimming pool, not allowing anybody to swim in that area.

It would be different if one neighbor had the private and exclusive use of a marked allocated parking space which is within a common area, but used that parking for other purposes (or a terrace or storage rather than a parking). In that case, it could be discussed whether is possible or not.

However, in your case, as far as I have been informed, there is no exclusive right of use of that marked area for only that neighbor, so he cannot justly use it, without the agreement of the community.

This occupation I think is against the horizontal division law, particularly Article 9 of the LPH (point 9.1.a) which indicates: the obligation of each owner to respect the general installations and common elements of the community, using them properly and avoiding causing damages.

Make the most of your savings FOR THOSE of you that reside in Spain and have savings in the UK now is the time to look at where they are invested, what they are invested in and what rate of interest/return they are earning and to make sure that they will have the potential to outperform inflation in the next year in the most tax efficient way possible.

ACCORDING TO a report from the Centre for Economics and Business Research and lend-to-save firm, Zopa, savers continue to invest their money into savings products that fail to beat inflation.

The report found that savers with £3,500 in a typical Cash ISA account would have seen interest payments of only £23 last year. Accounting for inflation, the value of these savings would have declined by £77, meaning savers would actually be £54 out of pocket. This figure is based on an ‘average’ cash Isa rate of less than one per cent.

The only reason a Bank or Building Society will offer savers decent interest rates is when they need to raise money, at the moment Banks and building societies can tap into cheap money from the Government, rather than rely on savers, hence the exceptionally low interest rates been offered.

Also if you have Premium bonds, the payout returns on these have been dramatically cut as they were deemed too attractive for savers in light of the meager returns they were being offered by the Banks. The reduction in the Premium Bond prize fund rate reflects current lower interest rates across the savings market, the NS&I said.

Last month, NS&I announced it was reducing the interest rates on its Income Bonds, Direct Saver and Direct ISA with effect from 12th September 2013.

Also all the savings vehicles mentioned above are not tax efficient here in Spain and could land you with a tax bill from the Spanish Tax authorities.

Guide Dogs on Benidorm public transport AN AWARENESS campaign for guide dogs to be allowed on public transport was presented on Friday 12th July in the Plaza de Tres Reys in Benidorm.

Sponsored by the Benidorm Lions Club and with the collaboration of the department of Transport and Traffic, the campaign receives the support of Benidorm City Council, represented by the Councillor for Mobility Maria Carmen Martinez and a range of public transport representatives.

“The aim is to spread awareness about guide dogs and their entitlement to access public transport,” said Maria Carmen, “Their role is vital, leading the blind and visually impaired.” Present at the event was Rafa Baron accompanied by the star of the show, his dog Cooper, demonstrating the considerable skills of USA-trained guide dogs.

A ‘montadito’ is the name of the small bread rolls made just for filling with Tapa and ‘100 Montaditos’ knows exactly how to do this well. Located all over Spain since 2001, they offer quality Tapas where you can choose from a selection of 100 delicious fillings from 1€ to 1.50€ for premium fillings and

wash it all down with a 1€ ½ litre of Mahou draught beer or a ½ litre of Tinto Verano for 1.70€. All you need to do here is find a seat, fill out your order, take it to the bar, pay and wait for your selection to be made. If you cannot be bothered to select from the menu they offer a mixed plate from 6€. Visit on their special Euromania Days (Wednesday and Sunday) when every Tapa, including the premium selection, is 1€. You might have to wait!

Activities, news and events from around Benidorm, Albir, Alfaz del Pi and La Nucia MAL PAS beach is a tiny, sandy cove reached from the bottom of the Old Town - head to the ‘Parc dÉlx’, better known to the Brits as ‘Dove Park’ and it’s just along from there. The sheltered quiet location makes it ideal for those wanting some quiet down time. From here you can pick up a boat three mornings per week to Tabarca Island, declared a natural Marine Reserve and the only inhabited island on the Costa Blanca.

At the bottom of the Mal Pas beach is a very long, fairly steep staircase that leads all the way up to the Mirador – the lookout point where the Levante and Poniente beaches meet. From here you get the most beautiful panoramic views of both bays and there is a very pretty white and blue tiled gazebo with seating which makes a lovely backdrop for a photo: they filmed a scene from the ‘Benidorm’ series there.

In the past, many visitors that came to Benidorm would demonstrate their love by leaving an initialed padlock in one of two places in the Old Town. Either on the stairs leading from Mal Pas beach up to the Mirador or up at the Mirador itself, on a monument. In fact, it became a tourist attraction in its own right - many would come just to read the messages.

Back in August 2012, this came to a sudden and abrupt end as the Council started removing the handrail, citing complaints from residents and tourists. They argued that they were unable to use the handrail due to the padlocks and so climbing the stairs was proving difficult and dangerous for them and at the same time they also removed the padlocks from the monument. However, I have noticed that recently they have been reappearing…

Perceptions of Benidorm are changing, and much of the impulse behind this appears to be coming from the town authorities themselves. While the resort still caters principally for families and the elderly, the administration is keen to attract sophisticated and independent travelers. To this end they’re targeting students and the gay market, as well as people interested in adventure and sport.

A new breed of luxury five star hotels are also sprouting up in Benidorm aimed at ‘The Marbella set’. The Villa Venecia is a boutique spa hotel located on the Plaza de Santa Ana up at the Mirador, with spectacular views out to sea and attracting the more discerning traveller looking for luxury.

Benidorm is not all ‘cheap booze and eat as much as you can buffets’ as portrayed in the ITV hit series – it is adapting to survive.

50 MEMBERS of the Evangelical Christian Church from Texas, Argentina and Madrid surprised holidaymakers and residents in Benidorm on Tuesday with a surprise ‘Flashmob’ in the city centre.

Their purpose was to promote the Cultural Festival in the Esplá Amphitheatre that came to a close on Wednesday at 10pm.

Do you own property in Spain that you rent out?

IF SO you could be paying more tax than you need to‌Spanish tax on rental income.

If you own property in Spain, whether you are resident or non-resident, you should be paying Spanish Income Tax on any rental income that you receive (Impuesto sobre la Renta). Non-residents who own property in Spain have to pay an annual income tax which varies depending on whether the owner lets the property out or not. Non-resident owners who do not rent their property out and who do not have any other source of income in Spain are obliged to submit an annual Tax Return and will pay Tax at 24.75% of 1% of the assessed value (valor catastral) of the property.

Owners who do rent out their property are obliged, by Spanish law, to declare this income and pay taxes on it (In most cases non-residents pay a rate of 24.75% -current rate of Non-Resident income tax in Spain).

It is important to note that each registered owner of the property is treated as a separate taxpayer and must file returns separately.

Many joint owners are only submitting one Tax Return and are running the risk of fines even though the Tax Return submitted accounts for the whole of the income received. If owners are receiving rental

income in Spain, and not submitting a Tax Return, the Hacienda can claim tax retrospectively for four years under the Spanish Statute of Limitations. If the Tax Office can prove that the non-declaration was omitted with criminal intent there is no Statute of Limitations as it is tax fraud. Owners not receiving rental income can also receive fines for not submitting an annual return.

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE! If you invest your property into a UK Limited Company then that company must pay its tax in the UK, providing the income is generated in the UK. As company shareholders and directors the property owners suffer no loss of control over their property and can rent it, sell it or raise money exactly the same as they would if they owned it in their own names.

There is no further requirement to submit personal non Resident Returns in Spain.

The UK Corporation Tax rate is 20% and the company would pay that on the profit the company makes annually after taking account of any expenses incurred, such as utility bills, Community Fees, mortgage interest, insurance etc. It may also be possible to offset the cost of flights to and from the UK for the company directors and car hire whilst visiting your property.

The transfer of your property into your own UK Company (which Wincham can provide), of which the property owners are both Directors and shareholders, is a simple procedure that will incur no Property Transfer Tax (7-10%). Furthermore, owning your Spanish property in this manner provides protection against Spanish Inheritance Tax for your beneficiaries, a tax that can be extremely onerous depending on your circumstances. For example IHT in Spain differs from the UK. After an allowance (typically â‚Ź15,957) the balance is taxed at rates from 7.65% up to 34%. The situation worsens when the inheritor is not a close relative of the deceased and the tax can increase by 140%. That means a possible top rate of 81.6%!

An optimistic outlook for landlords

OVER THE past few weeks we have hopefully begun to reassure you that letting your property in Spain can be a safe option. If our articles have done their job then you should be aware of what is and isn’t acceptable for a landlord to do and actions you can take if things begin to go wrong.

AS A lawyer I am well aware of the issues to do with paper work and legal regulations that can appear so obstructive to the course of justice here in Spain.

We can all feel frustrated by the faults endemic in our own country’s legal system. But please don’t shoot the messengers! Systems in any country can be slow to change and we do our best to evoke the laws that exist to protect your interests.

But, there is hope. Little by little successive governments have become increasingly aware of the depth of the problem, particularly in relation to safeguarding the rights of the landlord. Things are changing – quite a relief for those of us faced with representing landlords here in Spain.

So what has changed that means landlords should feel

so optimistic? An increasing landlord-friendly legal system now means that there is: A quick response when problems emerge: When we act on behalf of a landlord we can now put the process in motion much more quickly – the tenant can be summoned to settle the arrears within 10 days and if we hear nothing then a date can be set for the trial and even a date for eviction if it comes to that.

More power to take action: If the rental contract is registered in the Land Registry and the tenant does not respond in 10 days, the contract can be cancelled and the record in the Registry is cancelled too.

More control over the tenant’s continuing occupancy: measures are now in place to prevent the tenant from simply settling the rent debt on the day of the court hearing and being allowed to stay on in your property.

Help with evictions: If your tenant continues not to answer or settle the charge then they can be evicted from the property with the help of the local police.

Dedicated court time to settle problems: the courts now have dedicated time in which to hear these cases.

The landlord no longer finds himself in a never-ending queue of complainants.

So, things are looking up for the landlord. And it is a far more optimistic response I can give as a lawyer when landlords seek my help. Rather than delivering bad news about lengthy delays and impossible hurdles, I can now encourage those frustrated by bad tenants to come forward and apply to the courts.

Valencia’s Chatterbox PERCHED HIGH above the ornate iron and glass dome, its feet resting on a golden ball, is the Cotorra del Mercat, the big green parrot that is the symbol of the Central Market in Valencia. Cotarro means parrot in Spanish, but also ‘chatterbox’, and the weather vane is meant to represent the chatter and bustle of the business taking place fifty metres below its feet - although some local wags suggest that it’s more representative of the gossiping women stall-holders.

Built between 1914 and 1928, Valencia’s Central Market is one of the largest markets in Europe, covering an area of over eight thousand square metres. The building’s ornate design was the conception of Alejandro Soler and Francesc Guárdia, a beautiful example of the Modernista style of architecture. The cast-iron framework towering over the multi-coloured stalls is reminiscent of a huge Victorian railway station, with the central dome decorated with stained glass oranges and lemons, representing the typical produce of the Valencian region. The Mercado has undergone a major refurbishment over the last few years.

The market is divided into sections for different produce.

In the fish market the long chrome stalls are packed with ice and the vivid presentation of everything fishy resembles a carefully laid out floral display. Each type of underwater delicacy is separated: fat white Pulpi won’t be found snuggling up to shimmering Salmon or deep purple slices of fresh Tuna, and garish red Languostinos disdain the company of Percebes, the grotesque molluscs that look like a tiny severed elephant’s leg.

On the perimeter of the fish market are the offal stalls.

For anyone not used to seeing more than a couple of nicely laid out kidneys, or a few slices of lamb’s liver, these offal stalls are a revelation – and not necessarily a pretty one.

There’s an old saying that you can use every part of a pig

except the squeal, and the saying comes true in the displays laid out before you. Trotters from tiniest itsy-bitsy piglets to great big grand-daddys, severed heads glare sightlessly at you, surrounded by trays of chopped up compadres - snouts, ears, cheeks, and if you really have a taste for the obscure you can buy the head completely de-boned and laid out flat like some plastic pig’s mask in a joke shop!

In the vegetable section tiny stalls selling only varieties of beans used in paella do a roaring trade next to those piled high with sparkling water-sprinkled lettuces, many of which come from Alberic, a small town close to Valencia that hosts an annual Dia del Lechuga, when prizes are awarded for the biggest lettuces and visitors wander the streets eating fresh lettuce pieces from paper cones.

If your fancy is for dried meat instead of dried fish there’s plenty of choice of Jamon Serrano. Jamon recebo, from pigs fed on a mixed diet, is the cheapest, but if you want the real McCoy, jamon Ibérico is from pigs which have supposedly dined on nothing other than fallen acorns (bellotas) from the holm oak (but usually supplemented with scavenging for lizards, snails, slugs and insects). You’ll pay a lot more for this. If you really want to pay an arm and a leg for the back leg of a pig (‘paleta’ is the front leg) go for ‘pata negra’, the black pig for which you’ll practically have to take out a small mortgage.

And if all you want to do is be mesmerised one of the best markets in Europe, look no further than the Mercado Central.

Toledo – answers

RATHER THAN reprint the whole text about Toledo which I gave you to read last week, I have decided to pick out the bits surrounding the gaps you had to fill in.

AS I mentioned, quite apart from the historical context and facts of general interest, there were grammatical clues throughout the text which should have helped you to find the correct answers.

Sometimes history and geography are more interesting than language, but I will try to keep to the job in hand!

Un singular meandro del (a) río Tajo. (Here the clue is “meandro” which we can guess to mean “meander” and the grammatical clue given by “del” that we are looking for something masculine and singular).

Fue una importante ciudad conquistada por las (b) legiones romanas. (This was a bit mean really as we usually just say “los romanos” – the Romans, but “legiones romanas” follows on from “las” as feminine and plural.)

de las culturas (f) greco-latina y árabe. (If this is too technical – process of elimination!)

El ambiente de tolerancia desaparecía … referente a la (g) comunidad judía a la que se acusó de ser la causa de todas las desgracias (feminine singular, and they always seem to get the blame for everything). (h) Los Reyes Católicos tomaron dos decisiones que afectarían a la sociedad toledana. (Third person plural - otherwise known as Isabel and Fernando. She was rather more Catholic than he was).

La creación del (i) Tribunal de la Inquisición en 1485. (“Inquisición” is a feminine word, but “tribunal” is masculine. By the way, the Spanish Inquisition was finally abolished in 1834!)

Fue capital del (c) reino Visigodo. (Well, you may know nothing at all about the Visigoths but these were the chaps who turned up after the Romans went into decline. Grammatically, “reino” is masculine singular.)

La ciudad de Toledo alcanzó su época de máxima expansión demográfica en el siglo XVI, cuando el (j) Rey Carlos I la convirtió en capital del Imperio Español. (A masculine person, only one option left).

Tras la (d) conquista cristiana de la ciudad en el año 1085.

(You’re getting the hang of this, feminine singular. Also a very important date in the history of the Reconquest).

Felipe II decidió trasladar la capital a la (k) Villa de Madrid.

(Madrid was a late-comer as the capital of Spain. A lot of people don’t realize that “villa” in Spanish is not a kind of house, but actually means a small town.)

Toledo se convirtió en la ciudad de las (e) tres culturas, en la que convivieron cristianos, musulmanes, y judíos. (the additional clue here is the naming of the three cultures!)

La Escuela de Traductores, determinante en la transmisión

Toledo fue nombrada en 1982 capital de la Comunidad Autónoma de (l) Castilla-la Mancha. (Castilla-La Mancha is now one of the 17 regions of modern Spain).

EVERYONE ONE of us is familiar with the stories of cross-culture marriages, the eventual break-up and the snatching of the child or children of the marriage by one of the estranged partners – usually the male.

The story is not new but nonetheless it is interesting to note how different cultures handle claims of custody. In the West it is nearly always awarded to the mother. Google play HI AUNTY: I have just found Google play which gives the option to rent current films as a download at a reasonable price. I have watched a trailer and the download seems to be very good. Slight problem is that films are offered in Spanish, e.g. Lincoln is offered in Spanish only whilst Les Mis is in English with annoyingly large subtitles in Spanish.

I am using gmail.com and a Spanish Internet provider.

Is there a way to receive the service as if it was offered in the UK? I have tried Expat Shield in the past to watch TV programmes but find it slows the download speed badly.

Would appreciate your advice and have found many of your suggestions in RTN and the forum very helpful. Keep up the good work. This is because your internet IP address will be a Spanish IP address.

To have a UK IP address, and thus be offered UK content, you will need to use some for of ‘UK IP Address’ system.

Some such as ‘Expat Shield’ are free (and yes can cause havoc with your PC!) or paid ones like ‘hidemyass’, or ‘Astrill’.

IE HOLA AUNTY: A good read every week. My problem is when I try to connect to IE it starts up then says there is a problem and it turns IE off. I have a tower with Windows XP. I know it is getting on a bit but so am I and I think I’ve heard that IE or XP is closing.

Could this be happening?

Hope you can help Mick Aunty says: If IE keeps shutting down then this can be for one of two reasons: There is a problem with IE itself, or there is a problem with an ‘add on’ that has been installed.

Solutions for this include: Finding out which add on is causing the problem, and disabling it (via IEs tools menu) Uninstall and reinstall IE Use another internet browser like Firefox or Chrome.

IE and XP are not ‘closing’. Microsoft is simply no longer going to support XP, and will only provide very critical security updates for it.

This is because they simply want you to move to Windows or Windows 8.

Deleting emails HI AUNTY: I have a problem deleting emails from my iPad3. I delete them and for whatever reason they come back straight away! I have tried everything and cannot sort it out. Can you help? Thanks, Nigel.

Aunty says: Although you may be deleting them from your iPpad, you may not be actually deleting them from your email server. And so when you check your emails again, the iPad downloads emails still stored on your server.

Most servers have an option to ‘delete emails from server once downloaded’. You usually access this ‘online’ by going to the webpage of your server, inputting your account details and going to settings - exactly how will depend on which email service you are using.

A show too far for O Ginger One! LAST SUMMER we were all treated to the spectacular Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies and all the hype we were subjected to was well worth it with some brilliant performances from the various live acts. The press gave an extra special build-up to the pop sensation lassies from the 90s and to my surprise they delivered. Yes, folks, you read right, I’m praising the Spice Girls - something I thought I would never do.

All sorts of interest in the famous five came in behind their performance, but it all frittered away to nothing with Posh taking most of the flack … so nothing new there then. However, the zero interest

might be on the turn, least for ‘O Ginger One’ that is.

Geri Halliwell popped up in the press last week talking about a sitcom pilot show for Ch4 called Geri: Life Sucks. In the teaser video that’s been posted on YouTube you see Geri in bed with a handsome man who reveals that he is on a mission to sleep with all five Spice Girls … chances are I’ve now got your full attention.

The project has got some wellie behind it in the shape of Studio Objective Productions who made ‘Fresh Meat’ and ‘The Peep Show’ and a spokesman for the company said: “We are currently developing an idea for a TV show with Geri Halliwell in which she

laughs gamely at herself and her fame”… I’m very happy for her that she’s got some work, but … um... The production company went on to say: “The comedy will see Geri trying to balance the pressures of being a mother and an international pop sensation,”… Nope … still not making me laugh!

Sliding back to YouTube and the teaser video that’s up there, at the time of writing 15,000 peeps had viewed the clip with one reaction being: “That was funny as hell and I hope this show gets picked up and all the girls get bit parts, that would be awesome…” and another comment read: “‘Geri: This Sucks’ should be the name of this.”… Tilt!

Is mad Mel back in the saddle Celebrity clips

Full on, all out action movies have never shaken my tree, and I have to say I can’t ever see that scenario changing in the near future, nay, never. So why is the ‘Expendables 3’ movie here? …is the question that needs answering.

Sylvester Stallone sat down in his garage a couple o’ three years ago and came up with the master plan for the Expendables and now he has a franchise that’s growing in popularity by the hour. Lots of shootin’ n’ bangin’ n’ crashin’ fills the screen and somewhere around every 10-15 minutes we are treated to an explosion of some sort, but in all cases our action heroes win the day. Anyhow that’s me done with my wingeing - now to why this piece is here...

It seems that ‘Sly’ Baby has been putting out a few tweets that suggest Mel Gibson might well be part of the latest movie, with one reading: ‘Mad Max vs. Barney Ross’. Ross is Sly’s character in the Expendables and of course Gibson famously played Mad Max. Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, Milla Jovovich and Dolph Lundgren have already signed up to be in the film … will they be joined by Mad Mel? The Expendables 3, which will be directed by Patrick Hughes, is expected to start shooting soon and is scheduled for release in summer 2014.

SPEAKING AT the Broadcasting Press Guild lunch last week, top BBC executive Shane Allen said about ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, “…the door is always open for the classic sitcom.” First aired in 1992, I fancy it will be great to see Eddie and Patsy again struggling to come to terms with the ageing process.

There´s not many of you out there who haven’t seen the wonderful Jungle Book, and the word is coming out of Disney that there are plans to make a new screen version of Rudyard Kipling’s stirring novel. The 1967 animated musical film took $205 million at the box office ... that’ll take some catching.

Due back on our screens in the autumn, Downton Abbey will have most of you pinned to the sofa as the nights start to close in but actor Tom Chambers won’t be on view. He auditioned for the part of Lady Mary’s new love interest and was turned down because he wasn’t posh enough ... Perhaps the plum fell out of his mouth.

By Jack Troughton DANCE CHAMPIONS Matthew Brooke and Rebecca Green strictly stunned members of the newly formed Jive Javea Dance Club with a breath-taking routine.

They showed off skills that propelled them to the finals of this month’s Indie Jive Championship in Surrey, the finals of the World Championship in Blackpool and the Ceroc London Championship, all at intermediate level.

It has been a successful year for the pair as they have only been partners at the discipline for just over a year.

Dance club members were at the Achill Bar on the Arenal Beach in Javea to watch the mesmerising display – and later with teacher Kevin Bennett took the opportunity to try a Matthew and Rebecca in action little jive talking and dance the night away.

Kevin taught jive in England and having just moved to Spain is keen to hold classes on a regular basis – coaching skills to non-dancers and helping brush up the techniques of those who have already caught the bug.

Life recipe Hamburger with Grilled Tomato and Onion Relish A Big Mac? Anything but THIS HAMBURGER is packed with fresh ingredients and tangy tastes. It will spoil you for anything else. Eat it with your hands and let the juices trickle down your chin.

• 2 soft burger buns, sliced in half • 2 fresh 100% beef burgers • 2 slices taken from a large beef tomato • A little gem lettuce, sliced • Mayonnaise • Salt and pepper • A small onion, finely sliced • 2 tbls balsamic vinegar • 1 tsp sugar • Oil 1. Make the onion relish. Fry the onions over gentle heat with the sugar and a little oil until soft and translucent. Add the balsamic vinegar and increase the heat then cook until the onions become sticky. Set aside to cool.

2. Fry or grill the beef burgers and tomato slices on both sides until well browned.

3. Spread both halves of the burger buns with a generous helping of mayonnaise. Start with the bottom slice and add first the lettuce, then the burger and tomato. Season with salt

and pepper then finish with a dollop of the onion relish. Cover with the top slice of bread and serve – with a side portion of chips if you must!

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes

Open-Fit/RIC Hearing Aids

NOWADAYS HEARING aids are like computers: every six months something new comes along! The majority of improvements are small but every now and then a great leap forward occurs.

THE LAST of these was the invention of the open fit/RIC (receiver in the canal) hearing devices. They consist of a small piece that goes behind the ear and a very thin almost invisible tube or wire that goes into the ear canal.

Dramatically different from previous designs, open ear fittings set a new standard for aesthetics. Designed for looks, comfort and performance, these appliances integrate some of the most sophisticated sound processing technology available today. An ultra-thin sound tube connects the hearing aid amplifier to a tiny soft dome placed inside the ear canal, which keeps the ear feeling ventilated and comfortable. They are very discreet, almost invisible, and for most people are the most comfortable of all systems to wear.

The small buds leave the ears open, allowing them to breath freely and taking away any blocked feeling, allowing the low-frequency sounds in naturally whilst amplifying the high frequencies where help is most needed. The domes at the end of the wire into the ear canal come in different sizes right down to the very smallest sleeves, meaning that even someone with the smallest of ears and narrowest of canals can wear them comfortably.

Many people who have a hearing problem have good

low-frequency hearing (deep sounds, steady-state noises, background noises, men’s voices, engine or wind noise) but suffer from poor high-frequency hearing (women’s and children’s voices, high-pitched bells and buzzers, birdsong and, in the English language, they tend to be consonants at the beginnings and ends of words). The open-fit/RIC aid is ideal for this configuration.

With the receiver in the canal aid the loudspeaker is actually inside the ear at the end of the thin tube, meaning that the piece behind the ear (which would normally house the loudspeaker) can be made much smaller and more discreet.

These devices cost no more than the standard hearing aids and are suitable for most people but not those with severe or profound hearing losses. The amplifier unit is available in a myriad of stylish shapes along with a great choice of colours. Comments such as ‘I forget I’m wearing my hearing aid’, or ‘I’m back to being the social person I used to be’ are common from RIC hearing aid wearers.

Here comes the sun

By Jack Troughton AT FULL stretch for charity more than 40 people performed 108 ‘sun salutations’ in Denia – a demanding yoga move – to help raise around 2,500€.

The money is still coming in but will benefit the Asociacion Ludai, which is based in Denia, and helps young children with special needs and their families but receives no government funding. The ‘yogis’ unrolled their mats in the shade outside Denia Town Hall, near the centre’s home, for the marathon organised by Jess Howell and Nikki Bates.

Jess told RTN that money was still coming in from sponsors but she was confident the total would be around 2,500€, improving on last year’s 2,000€.

“The sun salutations were a great success and we plan to be back next year during the town’s fiestas to raise even more money for Ludai,” she said.

You have your reasons for acting the way that you are, and you have nothing to lose in making sure that others know that you are not for turning.

Look to your opposing sign of Scorpio where Saturn is having a field day laying down the law in infinite wisdom of just what is rightful right now. You are blessed with some wonderful opportunities this week, and there is a time scale so don’t waste any time disbelieving and pout all your energies into something rather wonderful.

You are not normally the person to take any easy option, so know that the short cut to success is yours if you have the temerity to take it on. Uncompromising Saturn will be there to test the water for you, but, if you play your cards right then who knows what could be on the cards, as you leave the opposition well and truly standing.

Mars is whetting your appetite for adventure, whilst Pluto is sharpening up your highly ambitious energies. Together they are asking you to aim higher and to be constant in your pursuance of that winning formula you are awaiting.

Remove negative thoughts and expect that success comes knocking on the door very soon.

Do not let negative energies drag you down, you are by your sheer nature very much the optimist normally. Ego and personal levels need to benefit from a boost, and this is closer than you think, although you have to believe more in yourself, and take things more in your stride for all to come together to your aid, putting you back where you belong.

Venus takes care of immediate problems allowing you some rest and relaxation and a chance to re charge your batteries.

With Saturn, the taskmaster, in opposition to Mercury, your ruler, you may feel that others are not respecting your own wants and needs right now. Your fears, however, are unfounded and this should restore your faith.

With Venus in actions with Virgo, Neptune and Saturn there seems to be more than one way to skin a rabbit this week.

Just stall for time before you make that quick decision you may just live to regret. Let others come up with their versions of a compromise, then tell them that you are not to be messed with.

You will have to start applying yourself to some of the tasks you have put on hold just lately. With a challenging aspect forming between Saturn and Pluto you can no longer afford to have anything on hold, as things are piling up around you. The impetus is to fight fire with fire, and you can’t do that sitting down.

The calm comes to you before the storm since a corner is developing in the Cosmos, and life will step up a pace after this weekend. Expect invitations and opportunities as your expertise is sought and there is work to do. You do your very best usually under pressure, and you need to be on top of your game really soon.

A time for the family, whatever pressures try to distract you from your obligations right now. No matter how hard the responsibilities seem yours is the input needed to balance things and to sway others into playing their part. Employing your deepest emotions you can rest when you know that all is well and taken care of.

Catherine Tekakwitha CATHERINE WAS born a Native Mohawk Indian in 1656 in Ossernenon Upstate New York. Her Father was a Mohawk Chieftain and her Mother a Roman Catholic, adopted by the tribe after capture. Because her Mother had no Clan as an Indian she was adopted into her Father’s Clan, and she achieved so much spiritually throughout her short twenty four years on Earth. Her first big challenge was at the age of four when the Mohawk Tribe suffered devastation with smallpox for two years. Catherine survived the epidemic but was facially scarred and suffered a permanent loss of her sight, sadly both her parents died. Raised by uninterested relatives Catherine with her adopted family had to flee from the marauding French, and aged ten years old Catherine was living rough under open skies. After a peace treaty Jesuit priests came to convert people to Christianity, and this greatly interested Catherine who saw the similarity between the Mohawk way of life and the life of a Catholic.

The family of Catherine were curious that she had no interest of Men, and even tried to arrange a marriage for her on her sixteenth birthday. Catherine broke away from the family and began to study the Catechism with a Jesuit Father as a direct response. Finally Catherine was admitted into a Jesuit Mission south of Montreal, where she was among other converts, and here she lived her short life praising God and trying to blend the energies of her Red Indian soul with the dogma of the Christian Catholic Faith. Catherine died, aged twenty four uttering the dying words of, “Jesus, I Love You.” However it was after her death that people noticed a change in Catherine’s appearance. Gone were the scars, and she appeared physically to three people, prior to burial, each

It would seem as if Catherine would begin her healing mission in death. She healed Joseph Kellogg from smallpox when a Nun just placed a piece of the wood from her coffin onto the wound. Father Remy, a renowned Jesuit recovered his hearing, and a serving Nun from Montreal her sight.

People began to dig up the earth around the tomb of Catherine, wearing it in bags to bring healing, and it worked…. it always worked. A fragment of her bone saved a young boy with a flesh eating bacterium back in 2006, and the list just goes on. The relics of Catherine are securely placed in the hands of the Catholic Church and their whereabouts not talked about nor disclosed, but it is thought that they are used for healing purpose.

Catherine was to be declared a Saint, firstly in 1884 she was venerated by Pope Pius XII, then Pope John Paul beatified her in 1980. Finally she was fully Canonised by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 and she became the first ever North American Native Indian woman to be canonised as a Saint.

Today the healing power of Catherine Tekakwitha continues and her intercession in cases of serious diseases is well known and noted. She has appeared to many around the World, and her healing power, especially when there are disfiguring injuries present, are sent to help survival and remove pain.

Informally Catherine is known as “Lily of the Mohawks” so long may she bloom, and as a Spirit World healer send her healing to a needy World!

THE TEULADA/Moraira Lions Club is holding its annual Summer Concerts on Sunday 28th July; Sunday 18th August and Sunday 8th September live on stage by the Castle, Moraira Town Centre starting at 8pm.

The Rommy Baker Orchestra will be performing the first Summer Concert, on Sunday 28th July. The Orchestra has been performing on the Costa Blanca since 1990 and plays the hits of USA Big bands like Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and many more of that era.

The Black Glitter Band will be performing the second Summer Concert on Sunday 18th August. ‘Black Glitter’ is an exciting band with a line-up of Geoff Britton (drums), Kelly (vocals), Carlos (guitar) and Chema (bass), whose repertoire includes the great lady vocalists of rock and soul: Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle etc.

Manhatton Jazz will perform the last Summer Concert on Sunday 8th September. The Jazz & Swing Band - Manhatton Jazz takes its name from its leader Jef Hatton, who has led a band of similar title performing for the past 20 years at all of London’s popular venues.

There is no entrance fee to the concerts but members of the Teulada/Moraira Lions Club will be there to accept your generous donations. All the money raised will go towards Local Disabled and Disadvantaged children. The Shamrockers will be performing the second concert on 19th August and Jazz Manhatton the last concert on 9th September.

Road Test Driving experience…

…TWO WORDS that every motorist knows about, no matter what vehicle they drive.

FOR SOME it will be a wholesome, positive experience while for others totally unsatisfactory, the latter not necessarily being the car’s fault either I might add - rather the driver’s sheer incompetence behind the wheel. But enough of the driving instructor’s tales and my Sunday afternoon experiences…

In this day and age when so much is clinical and characterless you could be forgiven for thinking that driving has become little more than another chore that just needs completing rather than being enjoyed and savoured. So often the whole experience can be a pretty monotonous affair especially with the number of vehicles on the roads.

It is therefore refreshing to sit inside the Audi A3 TFSi S line, which responds to almost every driver’s whim. There are five different modes ranging from economy to dynamic. Understandably, the latter is by far the most enjoyable.

After all it is the driving experience that lies at the heart of this splendid machine. Equipped with no less than a seven speed S-tronic automatic gearbox the driver can use it either as a traditional automatic or if they are feeling that they want more control the stick can be pushed to the left and pushed up or down to go through the gears manually.

If that is still not satisfactory then the paddle shifts either side of the uniquely designed steering wheel will deliver an experience akin to driving a racing car. When selecting dynamic mode and using the manual option, the A3 is noticeably much more responsive, agile and nimble although there is still a slight delay when the accelerator is kicked. Push the accelerator to the floor and it seems to go on and on forever... a very gutsy and exhilarating experience. It’s interesting to note that the paddle shifts can be used in conjunction with the manual option, if required.

Speed and agility are all very well but traditionally such vehicles guzzled fuel like no tomorrow. I am therefore positively astounded that not only will this hot hatch travel from 0 to 60mph in just seven seconds but it will also return a staggering 50mpg. You really can put your foot down without worrying about the fuel gauge plummeting. To put this into perspective it is more efficient than my own diesel Ford Fiesta, which certainly does not provide the driving experience or performance.

The sporty feel throughout the A3 S line is helped by the golf ball topped gearstick and the sports leather covered steering wheel. The driving position is critical and pleasingly I have no complaints; my arms comfortably resting outstretched at the ten to two position on the steering wheel.

THREE WEEKS ago we announced in RTN that two of our golf clubs were at last giving preferential rates to those golf societies willing to make a minimum number of bookings in one year. The deal was a guaranteed price for the whole of the year made

by Alicante Golf. The response from readers of this column has been nothing short of astonishing.

Many people seemingly agree with me that loyalty should be rewarded with special discounts. The ball has started rolling - now it is down to you who are members of golf societies to ensure that the elected committee of your societies is getting you the best deal and not lining the pockets of those who are only taking money out of our sport.

I urge all of you to encourage your golf societies to make bookings with the golf clubs you play at directly and not use a third party. Some clubs, Alicante Golf in particular, are very keen to develop long term relationships with our local golfers and will even allow the society a discounted green fee to be used by two or more players from a golf society as long as they advise

the name of the society at the time the booking is made. There is now ample opportunity to play golf at a reasonable price if a little effort is made by the golfers.

Things will undoubtedly change in the future and some agents will fall by the wayside and disappear off the scene, leaving those who use them high and dry. In my opinion it is important that golf societies build some form of rapport with the golf clubs for the sake of their own futures. Getting out and meeting those at the golf clubs in charge of taking bookings is essential and many clubs will very much appreciate the efforts you are taking if you arrange an appointment in advance. The vast majority will often offer those from the societies who are taking the time to visit them with as free round of golf; well worth the effort to my mind.

The rewards of building long term relationships are very enjoyable as I have experienced myself in the past when I was involved in society golf. Many of the people I met then are now friends and that is something that is very satisfying. We all know the Spanish people are very reluctant to change and many

have different values that we do and personal contact and face to face talks are much more beneficial than an impersonal email; particularly when that email comes from a third party.

The incentives are there: now it is up to you golfers to take the rewards that are on offer and enjoy them.

THE GOLF course at Alicante Golf was once again the winner at our weekly golf outing last Tuesday as only one player from our groups played better than his handicap.

Charlie Peter has become a very consistent golfer in the last few weeks and his handicap has come tumbling down as a result. This week Charlie saw another cut in his handicap after scoring 38 Stableford points in our individual competition.

Peter Hasell is another who is very steady and his short game is the reason for his constant appearance at the top of our leader boards each week: this week Peter lost out by just two points.

The six par three holes on Alicante Golf provided more than enough chances to secure a birdie two but once again this week the golf course won. Our twos pot now rolls over for another week.

It is very pleasing for the loyal members who turn out each week to see so many new faces coming to join in the fun at our golf days. This week we were joined for the first time by David Margetson, and boy did he make an impression. On hole eighteen David hit his tee shot into the water on the left and opted to hit another from the tee and was more successful by finding the fairway. With 172 yards to go to the flag David’s ball never left the line of the flag and took one bounce on the green and went straight down the hole for one on the most unlikely pars I have ever seen. As a famous footballer once said, “…it’s a funny old game.”

We hope to see many more of our readers join us over the next few weeks and guarantee all of them a warm welcome to Spain’s top golf club where enjoyment of our sport is the only important thing we require.

Trophies for four Torrevieja swimmers in this weekend’s Travesia!

THE 9TH Travesia of the ‘Puerto de la Torre’ took place on Sunday 21st July at the beach next to the Port of Torre de la Horadada. 406 swimmers battled it out in three different sea swims.

The youngest swimmers (5- 7yrs) swam 200m followed by the 8 – 13yr olds swimming a 500m course and then 316 swimmers from 13yrs upward swam the gruelling 1500m race.

Club Natacion Torrevieja entered 20 swimmers into these races, 8 in the 500m swim and 12 in the 1500m swim.

Starting with the 500m race, Samira Lucusni won 2nd place in the female Benjamin category (9-10yrs) with team mate Victoria Pigneur just missing out on the trophies with 4th place. In the boys Benjamin category, Jonathan Izquierdo came 11th. In the Alevin group team mates Zoe Connolly, Paula Garcia and Alexandra Amat came in 6th, 7th and 9th place. Elian Del Rio Castillo and Timofeiy Pykin finished 6th and 11th in the Boys’ Alevin race.

As the large yellow inflatable markers were dragged out to sea the nerves set in for all the swimmers in the 1500m race. Swimming a triangle around the bay the markers seemed like a dot on the horizon! With the starting gun fired a frenzy of 316 swimmers set off on the gruelling 1500m course. Having swimmers in 6 of the 10 age groups, the club amassed 3 trophies, with the female Masters of the club scooping 1st and 2nd place in the younger age group, Gillian McNiece winning first place and colleague Vicki Connolly second. In the older Female masters group Beryl Altabas won 1st place.

Swimmers Piroska Rideg won 5th place in the female Infantil category and Louise Brassinton 10th place. Yuriy Lymar was 4th in the Mens’ Absolute group and Konstantin Badminov 15th in the Infantil category. In the younger male Masters group Juan Martinez, Javier Solla and Joaquin Garcia came 20th, 76th and 95th of 148 male swimmers.

AS WE are drawing to the end of our season it is now the completion of the series of competitions and this week saw the final round of the Summer League.

The league started back in March - where does the time go! Anyway, the venue was the Eden canal stretch of the Rio Segura. The river was about 18 inches lower than normal and at the start of the match had some real pace on it. As the match progressed, the river slowed up but the depth did not change.

The fishing was patchy but there were several double figure weights, this came from the paste boys!
