SHE WAS particularly distressed when there was a “very familiar” call for her husband Bob – he passed away four years ago. The Legion has agreements with companies selling things like financial advice, insurance and funeral plans – it receives a commission on sales – but maintains members who do not wish to be contacted can tick appropriate boxes on membership forms and renewals. Speaking at her Orba home, Deidre said: “I was sitting here one day and the telephone rang and a man’s voice asked to speak to Bob – as Bob has been dead for four years my tummy went over.” She said she had not “let on” straight away as the caller said he wanted to speak about pensions because the law had changed in the UK. “I told him ‘before you go I must tell you Bob has been dead for four years and it is very painful when someone telephones to speak to a dead person’. I put the telephone down and had a few tears.” Deidre has also been called directly yet maintains she ticked boxes when she renewed her own Legion membership underlining she did not want to be pestered. And she alleged that several years ago some branches in Spain sold details in breach of data protection laws – a belief supported by other members. They are using the freedom of information legislation to try to discover how companies based in Spain have sensitive information. BEREAVEMENT “At the time people were receiving calls from a funeral company and asking if they wanted to take out a funeral plan when they were recently bereaved,” said Deidre. “Or who, as one of my friends had, had just had a serious operation, in my friend’s case open heart surgery.” Continued on page 6
