Car hire danger by Jack Troughton CAR HIRE companies must insure customers have the correct driving licences before allowing them out on the road, a worried politician said this week. Visitors to Spain from outside the European Union are required to have an additional international driving licence to be legally behind the wheel. The paperwork is easy and cheap to obtain. Without the document drivers face spot fines and their insurance would be invalid in an accident – which could mean they could be sued for millions in compensation. Oscar Anton, Deputy Mayor of Javea, has appealed to car rental companies to stop hiring cars to people who did not have all the necessary documentation. It follows an incident in July when the son of a Javea couple was stopped in a hire car returning to the Costa Blanca from the Pamplona bull running.

Troy Whitehead was pulled over to the side of the road by Navarra police. He had an Australian driving licence but no international document after hiring a car in Javea – and not enough cash to pay a 250€ fine so was forced to stay in the blazing sun until his parents could mount a rescue operation. His mother, Eileen Mackenzie said the 26-year-old worked on Australian oil rigs on a ‘month on, month off’ basis and regularly visited Spain. SNATCH Unfortunately, during his last stay he lost his wallet to pickpockets and had cash snatched from his hand as he paid for nightclub tickets before heading for Pamplona. “We went to the hire company and he rented a car on his Australian licence without any problems and he knows all the rules about driving here,” she said.
