Car hire danger

by Jack Troughton CAR HIRE companies must insure customers have the correct driving licences before allowing them out on the road, a worried politician said this week.

Visitors to Spain from outside the European Union are required to have an additional international driving licence to be legally behind the wheel.

The paperwork is easy and cheap to obtain. Without the document drivers face spot fines and their insurance would be invalid in an accident – which could mean they could be sued for millions in compensation.

Oscar Anton, Deputy Mayor of Javea, has appealed to car rental companies to stop hiring cars to people who did not have all the necessary documentation.

It follows an incident in July when the son of a Javea couple was stopped in a hire car returning to the Costa Blanca from the Pamplona bull running.

Troy Whitehead was pulled over to the side of the road by Navarra police. He had an Australian driving licence but no international document after hiring a car in Javea – and not enough cash to pay a 250€ fine so was forced to stay in the blazing sun until his parents could mount a rescue operation.

His mother, Eileen Mackenzie said the 26-year-old worked on Australian oil rigs on a ‘month on, month off’ basis and regularly visited Spain.

SNATCH Unfortunately, during his last stay he lost his wallet to pickpockets and had cash snatched from his hand as he paid for nightclub tickets before heading for Pamplona.

“We went to the hire company and he rented a car on his Australian licence without any problems and he knows all the rules about driving here,” she said.

Failure to ‘clunk-click’

A QUARTER of Marina Alta drivers fail to use seat belts while out on the road – on both short and long journeys – a new safety campaign has revealed.

by Jack Troughton Over six days this month local police in Denia pulled over 192 vehicles of all types and discovered 24.99% broke laws involving seat belt and other approved restraint systems.

The survey - conducted by Denia Town Hall, the National Road Safety Observatory and The General Directorate of Traffic – discovered the worst offenders were drivers travelling alone.

Unfortunately, the figures revealed that the situ-

ation had worsened since a similar campaign in March, when occupants of 15% of cars pulled over violated safety laws.

A spokesman said: “The aim of this campaign is to influence drivers and passengers to use these safety devices no matter how short their journey - so the use of seat belts becomes a habit.

“All occupants of a vehicle must be secured with an appropriate restraint. Not wearing a seat belt – along with speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol – is one of the major risks on the road.”

Police continue to fine illegal beach vendors THROUGHOUT THE summer months of June, July and August, in response to thousands of public complaints, police have brought no less than 808 sanctions – nine per day - against illegal vendors peddling drinks, sandwiches, sun lotion, massage services, swimwear and other products on Benidorm beaches: over the same period in 2012 only 245 charges were made. Despite police efforts the vendors continue to be a problem as the fines – on average 300€ - are relatively insignificant compared to the profits of the illegal sales.

The city commended the police for their efforts.

Plans to improve Javea THE TOWN Hall in Javea has submitted plans for a new project to the Ministry of the Environment to develop a new wooden walkway to extend from the Parador Hotel on Javea’s Arenal to the Port’s Triana Bridge. The new walkway would afford walkers a safe and uninterrupted 5m x 2km stroll alongside the beach. Also in Javea, work has begun on a new roundabout at the entrance to Urbanisation El Tosalet at the junction of Ctra. del Portitxol and Ctra. de la Guardia, a major traffic and accident black spot.

WFA changes win icy reception

by Jack Troughton PLANS TO prevent British expat pensioners receiving the Winter Fuel Allowance are “illconsidered, shabby and unfair”, according to one protester in a growing Europe-wide campaign.

Moves to end the payment – up to £300 depending on age – to expats living in certain European countries deemed “warmer” that the UK in winter were announced by Chancellor George Osborne earlier this year.

However, the Government has repeatedly stated that the WFA is to help pensioners warm – but takes no account of plunging temperatures across Europe.

Secretary of State for Works and Pensions Iain Duncan-Smith, the former Tory leader, is behind changes estimated will save the government around £30 million a year.

The proposals have triggered an emotive campaign across Europe. The DWP has admitted a study to

calculate average winter temperatures in Spain and France included their overseas tropical and semi-tropical dependencies because they were in the same administrative area.

David Rosemount, who lives in Scrignac, Brittany, has carried out his own research and discovered the local climate was as cold and wet as similar places in the UK – and “colder than London or the (Chingford) constituency of Mr Iain Duncan-Smith....whose brainchild is this cack-handed scheme.”

FLAWED David said: “The whole policy is deeply flawed and duplicitous. It ignores the fact that many parts of France and Spain, for instance, are much colder in the winter than the relatively temperate British climate.”

He added that many Government Ministers continued to think expats enjoyed millionaire lifestyles and ignored the fact many pensioners moved abroad to live a little more cheaply.

“In addition many British retired expats ‘enjoy’ minimal pensions and live in quite straightened circumstances – this being true of many pensioners who will not enjoy the well-protected and generous Parliamentary and public pensions,” said David.

“British expats form an exceedingly loyal group, in many cases having served their country and their communities, and they love and support their country of birth – but this is a step too far.”

He added: “This is an ill-considered, shabby and unfair proposal. To put the matter into perspective, the DWP has itself wasted the entire cost of the saving that would be made in one year on a useless computer system.”

The bombing of Alcoy THE CITY of Alcoy has marked the 75th Anniversary of air strikes carried out in 1938 by Hitler’s Luftwaffe with the testimonies of three survivors, an exhibition of drawings and a visit to the Cervantes shelter. At precisely 9.50am an air raid siren sounded just as it did 75 years before, reminding in the city of the bombing raids that destroyed homes, schools, churches and factories. Sari Cambra, Liberto Mengual and Jorda Angel, children when the strikes happened, told of how they grew up overnight when the city was reduced to rubble in 1938.

The exhibition ‘Llapis, paper i bombes (1936-1939)’ was opened in the Cultural Center Mario Silvestre and a commemorative plaque was unveiled. One of the survivors presented the mayor with a fragment of shrapnel.

Queues of people paid 3€ for the bubbly Welshman to value their antiques at the charity Funday-Sunday in Javea – an event which raised more than 5,000€ to be shared between the Guardian Angels and Costa Blanca Dog Homing.

Mark, who runs an antique shop in Brighton, is best known for his appearances on programmes such as ‘Flog It’, ‘Bargain Hunt’, ‘Antiques Road Trip’ and ‘Put Your Money Where

Your Mouth Is’, has agreed to a repeat appearance next year.

The charity day was held at the Toscal home of Sue Nutbrown – which featured in television’s ‘May the Best House Win’ - and hundreds of people turned out to support the fund raising.

“Mark was such a good egg,” said Sue. “For 100€ he went into the stocks and had wet sponges thrown at him. Some of the items he valued were amazing and he wants to come on a buying spree.”

Sue said she hoped to double the amount raised with a repeat open day at Palace de la Paz next summer.

Continued from front page “However, every rental car leaving Pamplona was stopped by police. Troy was told he could not drive in Spain on an Australian licence – without the international licence. He told officers the company should not have given him the car if there was a problem.”

Troy was fined 250€ but because of the earlier thefts only had 150€ with him – and no credit cards. Officer took the cash and put a steering lock on the car.

“They said he did not have an international licence and therefore could not drive,” said Eileen. “Four more Australians were pulled up and managed to scrape together the fine and were allowed to continue.

“But Troy was left sitting on the side of the motorway in the middle of nowhere without water or food – he said he was starving and the temperature inside the car was 41 degrees.”

And Eileen alleged the car company did not seem interested in helping but did add her name to the hire agreement with her UK licence – and she made a 1,200km

round trip to get the hire car and her son.

Mr Anton, who heads political party Xabia Democratica, is calling for car hire companies to be “more responsible” with clients and make sure all the necessary documentation was produced.

He said more and more visitors to Spain were from outside the EU and it was simple for the companies to explain the law.

He is also writing to the Navarra police to ask that when drivers were prevented from continuing their journey they were left at a garage or service area. “We are saying this is not good for tourists – he was in the middle of nowhere – this is not good for the image we want to portray to visitors.”

Mr Anton, a lawyer, said he was very concerned about visitors being able to drive without the proper licences. “Imaging if there is a crash or accident – the insurance will not cover anyone if they are driving illegally.

“You could be taken to court and face millions in compensation – all because the rental companies are not saying anything.

This is very important,” he said.

Care agency to continue THE FAMILY of Benidorm businessman Raymond Reula – killed in an argument over ticket prices – has vowed to keep the 3C’s Care and Nursing Agency going.

The 34-year-old father-of-two, who also tirelessly worked for charity, died last month shortly after a heated dispute over entrance to one of the resort’s top events, the Electro Beach Festival.

It was later discovered Raymond suffered a broken neck and a 50-year-old man was later charged with involuntary

homicide – manslaughter. He was released on bail but is due to appear before a judge on 15th October.

Raymond’s wife Clare and mum Sue this week thanked everyone who attended his funeral and all those who have chipped in to buy a memorial tree each for two-year-old Lucas and one-year-old Sienna.

Sue said money was still being collected but it was planned to stage a planting ceremony and invite everyone who had contributed.

“If something happened the authorities would be looking for who is at fault – the insurance would not cover anything and people could be made personally responsible.”

DREAM She told RTN: “Clare and I wish to say the 3C’s Care Agency will continue and it was always Raymond’s wish to have the biggest and best care agency on the Costa Blanca – and his dream was to open a care home.

“All our staff has given great support to us both and all now will try and maintain the high standards that are expected and keep the 3C’s going.”

She added: “In addition, with some financial backing, we want to look to the future and open a care home in Raymond’s name where our clients can get even better care.”

Sue said the family hoped that the court case would allow them some closure. “When, maybe, we can get some peace from this horrible nightmare.”

Spain’s border changes ahead of EU Commission visit

by Jan Gamm SINCE 19TH SEPTEMBER the Spanish authorities have made certain ‘changes’ at the border crossing between Gibraltar and the Spanish mainland. A ‘clearing area’ has been designated to attend to vehicles requiring document checks and searches, enabling the queue of traffic to move more freely. The government in Gibraltar suspects the move has been put in place to appease an imminent EU team inspection of the way in which border controls are carried out by the Spanish authorities. A spokesman confirmed that scenes of the chaos that ensued over recent weeks and caused immeasurable discomfort to travellers as a result of unnecessary border controls by the Spanish government have been caught on camera and will be submitted for EU inspection.

Kidnap attempt foiled SIX PEOPLE, five men and one woman, have been arrested for allegedly plotting to kidnap the Alcoy entrepreneur Alfredo Alberola. National Police made the arrests after an investigation lasting several weeks. One of the suspects was known to have carried out surveillance of Alberola’s house, recording the movements of other residents in the house and armed with a pistol. The Spanish, Colombian and Ecuadorian suspects were captured on different days in the province of Alicante.

Some have a history of drug trafficking.

Further hip problems for King Juan Carlos

THE KING is to undergo a further operation to replace his left hip prosthesis put in place a year ago which has now developed an infection. The operation will be performed in two stages by the world’s leading surgeon in hip replacement, Miguel Cabanela. The first stage will involve the installation of a temporary replacement and the second the fitting of a permanent prosthesis. His recovery is estimated to take six months. The King faced questions this week as to whether he had considered abdication or regency in favour of Prince Felipe and he answered that he had not.

Voting appeal blocked VETERAN CAMPAIGNER Harry Shindler will not see his fight for a vote in British General Elections reach the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.

by Jack Troughton A PANEL of five top judges decided the 92-year-old’s claim that losing his vote under the 15-year rule was a breach of his human rights would not proceed to the top level of the court.

Harry’s solicitors, Italian law firm Oliver and Partners, said no reasons were given for the ruling and no further appeal was possible.

However, the pensioner, who lives in Italy, has vowed to continue his campaign for the right to vote in UK national elections and referenda. In a statement his solicitors said: “He intends to petition the United Nations as he also believes that his disenfranchisement is in violation of the Universal Charter of Human Rights.”

A growing

number of expats around the world are campaigning to win the right to vote in British polls beyond the current cut-off point of 15 years. They are currently lobbying MPs and MEPs for support.

Harry joined a number of expats in Brussels earlier this month and met Viviane Reding, the Vice-President of the European Commission, who has given her “wholehearted support to the campaign”.

She has publically stated that losing the right to vote meant some EU citizens – including citizens of the UK, Denmark, Ireland, Germany, Cyprus and Malta – “are effectively being punished for exercising their rights of free movement.”

RIGHTS And the issue is one of 12 key points in the 2013 EU Citizenship Report – the Commission has already committed to “enhancing citizen’s electoral rights and promoting their full participation in the democratic life of the EU.” Harry and other delegates, including Sir Roger Gale, MP, asked Ms Reding and her officers if they would recommend a

European directive “which would bind the UK and force it to change its election rules.”

Ms Reding “was adamant” the commission did not have the power to make a directive “on an issue such as this where national governments had the freedom to decide on voting laws.”

But the European Commission has not ruled out a direct referral to the European Court of Justice – although such cases were very rare – and agreed the matter should be classed as urgent given the upcoming UK referendum on continued membership of the EU. Harry has already made a formal request to the Commission to prepare a case against the UK and refer it to the ECJ “as the restriction on his right to vote is a breach of the EU Treaty laws.”

The commission has agreed to consider the case of other countries where expats lose the right to vote if they move to another member state in order to potentially link any actions.

Old Master makes new friends

by Jack Troughton A DISTINGUISHED 17th Century painting believed to be the work of Flemish-artist Sir Anthony Van Dyck was admired by dozens of visitors to a Costa Blanca home last weekend.

The huge picture ‘Lamentation of the Virgin, St Magdalen, and St John over the body of Christ’ is owned by a Javea art company and was on public show during a charity event on Sunday.

It was purchased by art historian Dr Susan Grundy and her company Mnajdra Discerning Fine Art in a UK auction as a copy of ‘Lamentation’ – but research and scientific tests have already triggered international excitement that the canvas could be a Van Dyck original.

The painting is going to Valencia University for further academic evaluation, tests and restoration – but experts are confident the picture was, at least, produced in the artist’s workshop where students would have studied.

Antiques expert Mark Stacey – in Javea to value collectables – has seen the painting. He said: “It is a very impressive piece and Dr Grundy is absolutely doing the right thing by carrying out the research”.

If the painting was an original it would cause massive upheaval in the art world. Another ‘Lamentation’ is housed in Madrid’s Prado Museum – Spain’s national gallery.

MYTH Experts have already questioned whether the Prado version is a Van Dyck – until 1975 it was always attributed to Paul Rubens – and has been described as a “beautiful 19th Century copy” surrounded by “a myth of originality”.

Dr Grundy said research and restoration continued on the painting. “We have to see what is our level of courage is – once you have removed something you cannot put it back.

“Qualified academics have placed it in a workshop but I do not believe it is the experts’ job to make a judgement until all the research is done – I think you need all the information

to make a final decision.”

Dr Grundy believes the painting was completed in Rubens’ workshop – while Van Dyck was a pupil of his countryman.

“Van Dyck would have been very young when he went into Ruben’s workshop but surpassed the master.

“Van Dyck is better that Rubens. He was very professional, very focussed and very modern.”

She said there were “problems” with both paintings – not least because her picture contained an “unholy trinity” of two women and Christ and suggested this could be why the figure of St John was added much later.

Hearts keep beating

By Jack Troughton JALON VALLEY HELP’s ‘Have a Heart’ campaign will take centre stage at the charity’s annual Think Pink Coffee Morning on Saturday 5th October.

The small heart-shaped cushions are given free to breast cancer patients and are ideal to tuck into the armpit and help reduce pressure on the wound site.

Launched at HELP’s recent Breast Cancer Seminar, information about the campaign will be on the charity’s stand at the coffee morning, being held at Jalon’s Pensionistas and Library building between 10am and 2pm.

The cushions are made by the Crafty Devils, a craft group using Casa Animo, HELP’s ‘drop in’ centre in Alcalali, and the initiative has quickly become a community project involving members of a local church and people living locally.

Jane Trask, a Jalon Valley HELP volunteer, suggested the idea of the cushions and was instrumental in insuring the first 250 were ready for the seminar.

Entrance to the coffee morning is 1.50€, which includes a cup of coffee and once again the hall will be a sea of pink – with all proceeds going to the charity’s Cancer Fund.

Stalls include crafts, jewellery, bric-a-brac, books, and clothes with entertainment provided by the Careline Street Dancers and Barry ‘the swingman’ Peters. In addition there will be other attractions, including ‘Guess the Weight of the Cake’ and ‘Name the Lamb’.

Costa Blanca’s commitment to excellence

by Keith Nicol LUISA PASTOR, the president of the council of Alicante and the Provincial Tourism, met this week with representatives of the Club ‘Temps’ to address the involvement of the Costa Blanca Tourism Board in the next edition of 2014 guidance and promotional activities programme.

During the meeting, which was also attended by the Deputy of Tourism, Joaquín Albaladejo, and vice president of the employers’ association of the club, Antonio Serrano, discussed establishing promotional activity to boost domestic tourism in the interior of the region.

Pastor noted that the Costa Blanca is a provincial brand covering the entire territory characterized by the diversity between the coast and inland, the landscape, the variety of different sports, as well as proposals of native gastronomic and cultural wealth. In this regard, the President stressed that the Mediterranean climate and beaches are our greatest asset, but we should promote also be promoting more inland to increase employ-

ment in these establishments.

THE CITY Hall of La Coruña is making a last ditch attempt to identify the owner of the Primitiva Lottery ticket that won a jackpot prize of €4.7 million in June last year. The winning ticket was purchased by a gentleman and then left on the counter. The ticket and been paid for and stamped but was later found by the lottery ticket seller still in his office located at Carrefour. According to regulations if the ticket remains unclaimed throughout a two year period, ownership reverts to the person who sold the ticket.

In a year-long search the number of the ticket has been printed in the municipal website, placed on the announcement board and also been printed in the BOP, the Official Bulletin of the Province. The Mayor of La Coruña, Carlos Negreira, said: “I must be the only Mayor in Spain trying to give someone money instead of asking for it!”

Andy, Roy, and Gavin from Javea Auto Sales – who took part in the spring challenge earlier this year – hope to collect six more working laptops to add to the four they already have to distribute amongst the four schools supported by the rally organisers.

The 5,000km rally begins in Javea on 29th November and ends in Erg-Chebbi in Morocco on 6th December. Competitors already take school supplies, sweets and toys for the schools and youngsters they meet on the road. “The computers don’t need to be fancy,” Andy told RTN. “And they don’t necessarily need to be working. If we collect them, as many as we can, we will get them working with the aim of getting six more working ones.”

He said PC Highway in Javea has offered “within reason” to refurbish as many laptops as possible “and will professionally

strip everything out of them so people don’t need to be worried anything sensitive will be going around the world.”

MODERN Andy added: “Our challenge is to get as many working laptops to the schools as we can. This is not the modern world – for example there is no Wi-Fi – but it gives the kids access to the modern world.”

The rally organisers are also looking for donations of kids clothing, pencils, biros, sweets and toys. “There is a physical limit to what we can carry but they will be spread around all the cars.”

The race is a five stage event and the teams take a day out to visit the schools. “But a third of supplies are given out en route – we come across hundreds of people along the route...God knows where they live.”

At present there are 105 cars registered for the rally and at least 50 are expected to start from Javea’s Arenal. The adventure is designed to be a “cheap rally” and the rules state cars must be pre 1997 models.

Already confirmed amongst the field are Fiat Pandas, a Citroen 2CV, a Renault

4, an Audi Quattro, VW Golf, and various four by fours.

“A lot of it is about driving something reliable,” said Andy. “One of the misconceptions is that there are a lot of four by fours and yes, they are ideal and certain sections are for four-wheel drives – twowheel drives may need help in the sand but they can still go.”

He said there was no age or sex discrimination. “It is a really good atmosphere and a really good introduction to a motoring event – basic mechanical knowledge is useful but not essential as everyone helps everyone else. “We will happily offer general advice or a crash course with our mechanic – the biggest cost is the fuel.

“All you really need is a spirit of adventure – a lot of people camp out but there are very reasonably priced hotels if you don’t want to.”

Ark refuels at Fun Day

by Jack Troughton THE ANNUAL LAPS Fun Day raised 3,200€ for the animal charity and will help keep its Pego sanctuary – cheerfully known as ‘The Ark’ – running.

Opened by Bay Radio presenter Tony Myles, this year’s event was given a mediaeval theme – complete with stocks where people enjoyed giving volunteers a soaking by throwing wet sponges.

Tony said the Local Animal Protection Society had started a couple of years earlier and was well supported by the expat community.

“This organisation has adopted and found homes for almost 1,000 animals,” he said. “It is amazing – all from small beginnings – and it is all thanks to people like you.”

Five teams of budding chefs entered the Paella Competi-

tion and offered three judges the fruits of their labours. First prize went to ‘Team Espanglish’ but portions of all five dishes were sold to hungry customers, helping raise more funds for the charity.

Jeff Corbett was master of ceremonies for the afternoon at Monte Pego while music was provided by Freeway and Lee Napier.

And shelter volunteers took along some of the homeless animals – one adult dog and three puppies finding new families.

LAPS President Chrissie Edwards said: “Jeff hosted the afternoon with all his usual wit and charm. At the end of a busy but fun filled day, he thanked the many volunteers on whom LAPS relies to love and care for the animals.

“The money raised from everyone’s efforts and support will all go to help keep the ark afloat.”

Two free dance classes, coordinated by director Alicia Gomis, will be held on 1st and 8th October from 6.30pm to 8pm for children and from 8pm to 9.30pm for adults, in preparation for the event. Nuts for S.A.T.

IT’S ALMOND harvesting time again and whereas the farmers of the Hondón Valley have been busy collecting almonds using large mechanical aids, a couple from Hondón de los Frailes had some other fun ideas of their own.

Stepping back in time to an age before the tractor, Patricia and Richard De Ste Croix invited a few friends go and get a little fresh air and spend the day collecting the nuts and then de husking them, just as was done in the region by

local farmers many generations ago.

The selling point for all the huff and puff in the autumn sunshine was to raise some valuable funds for the animal charity S.A.T. along with some invaluable awareness. So armed with long poles, large pieces of netting, carrier bins and the essential hats, the ‘nutters’ set about gathering in this year’s bumper crop.

The nuts will be taken to S.A.T. in Dolores and sold in aid of the charity.

S.A.T. offers refuge and medical assistance to many homeless and abandoned dogs. Especially in these times of crisis,

when more and more ‘pets’ are occasionally abandoned because owners can no longer afford the upkeep or have on occasion returned to their homeland without their dogs, there is always a home for them with the caring volunteers from S.A.T. There are always animals requiring urgent attention and then needing loving homes. If you feel you could offer such a home to one of the dogs, or have some spare time and like Patricia, could act as a volunteer, please telephone 966 710 047 for more information.

On Saturday 21st September 26 songsters and friends filled a coach for a trip to Pinoso, a small town with an interesting claim to fame as its home owners do not pay rates. Thanks to the local marble industry it has been listed as the 5th richest village in Spain.

After a coffee break in the main street the coach trundled down narrow country lanes to a local hamlet called Lel. Tables were laid in front of a rustic finca for a barbeque in the garden. This country pile is owned by Jayson and Glenn. The house is 212 years old and at one time the owners produced their own wine. Little by little it is being renovated to its former glory and Jayson & Glenn invite groups of any size to enjoy their hospitality – they catered very well for 60 people on the day the Choir visited. Like most towns in Spain, Pinoso boasts a purpose-built theatre which proved to be high quality venue for the evening concert – the first of Crescendo’s 2013/14 Season.

The programme consisted of four sets of three numbers – some familiar and very much associated with Crescendo programmes, and a sprinkling of recent additions.

Although the audience did not take up all the comfortable seats on offer, the local Red Cross received a sizeable donation of 360€ from a retiring bucket collection.

The next Crescendo concert is planned for 2nd November at the church in Dolores Main Square.

Community market opens

by Jack Troughton SHOPPERS WILL find handicrafts and home produce on sale at the new weekly community market organised by Javea International Baptist Church.

The first market will open its doors on Thursday 3rd October at the Church Centre in Carrer Favara 8, in Javea Old Town – near the site of the Javea’s weekly outdoor market – and runs between 10.30am and 1pm.

And it has been established alongside the existing JIBC Friendship Cafe which has now been running for two years and has proved to be a popular place

to enjoy coffee, cake and a chat whilst meeting friends and making new ones.

Visitors now also have the opportunity to browse handicrafts, hobbies, and produce made and grown in the community.

BAKE Organiser Christine Williams said: “We hope that introducing the new community handicraft and home produce market in the hall adjacent to the cafe will provide an opportunity to those who make and bake, and those who have hobbies, to take advantage of this wonderful way to display their

goods in a friendly environment.”

She added: “We are hoping it goes really well. We will have 10 or 11 stalls to start with and I hope soon there will be more.

“It is very different from what is available at Javea Market. Everything must be made at home and not shop bought – it is a little bit unique.”

APASA dogs go walkies

By Jack Troughton TEN DOGS cared for by animal charity APASA were joined by canine chums for a sponsored walk and barbecue on Sunday.

The APASA dogs wore bright orange high-visibility jackets bearing the legend ‘Adopt Me’ and the charity’s email www.apasa.eu.

And the event raised over 434€ for the charity with entertainment supplied by singer Barry Peters. APASA also thanked Clare and David for the use of Mr Punch Bar and Shaun for cooking.

Pirates raid Moraira

THE SKULL and crossbones will fly over Moraira tonight (Friday) when the El Portitxolet Theatre Group presents its new musical ‘Moraira! The Show Must Go On!’.

The performance marks the opening of a new season for the group and starts at 10pm. The group promises a spectacular night of glamour.

The show itself looks back at the history of the community through the eyes of two ‘ancients’ and is packed with songs and dance numbers.

Have you heard the one about the depressed dyslexic cattle rancher who wanted to start a diary…

PREVIOUSLY ON Watts In Britain: Well, despite rushing down at warp speed to purchase my four lights LED baseball cap from the local Aldi store, I have to sadly report that I was too late. Word had clearly gotten out and the place was stripped bare of all traces of said caps. Therefore, my promise to write an interesting and stimulating report on the headlighted headgear was a tad premature. The very nice shop assistant told me, “Once we put an item out, if it goes, it goes…” Yes, but will any more come in? “Some of our items are limited edition, if you know what I mean - we sort of try them out and once they’re gone that’s it…”

And so, with a heavy heart I returned home. I was soon re-heartened by a radio item on the lunchtime news. Apparently, if we all take time to keep a diary we can possibly reduce stress. Yup, it’s all true - I heard it on the Beeb! I wonder if that includes when you’re stressed over not getting an Aldi LED baseball cap? “Yes Watts, even that; just write about it and your blues will dissipate!”

Over the water at the University of Minnesota, new research shows that workers who write down the day’s events in the office actually did lower their stress levels. Wow, that’s worth knowing; I wonder if they do that at the RTN nerve centre in La Nucia? It could be why they’re always so calm - they keep diaries and log the behaviour of each other. Hmmm, I wonder what they’re writing about Danny?

Now I don’t know about you but in these days of Facebook, Twitter and other social media (where peo-

ple share their most intimate and often unedifying thoughts) you’d think that something as old hat as a written diary just wouldn’t hold its own. But if the new research is write (get it?) it could even be making a resurgence. After all, diaries have a long illustrious history from the actual-factual likes of Sammy Pepys through Anne Frank and up to Tory bounder Alan Clarke; to the fictional ones of Adrian Mole, Bridget Jones or even the famous ‘Captain’s log’ of James Tiberius Kirk of the Star Ship Enterprise… Yup, when you’ve got the stress of Klingons on your starboard bow, what better way to unwind than write a couple of paragraphs about the buggers in your log, eh?

Ross McGuiness, Lifestyle guru of the Metro, offers us the following thoughts: “A diary lets us put who we are on paper but it also allows us to describe who we want to be. Even when the entries are mundane, there is something aspirational about them.” Hmmm, I’m not so sure about that Russ, my earliest diaries just seem to indicate when my favourite TV shows were on (e.g. Saturday 15th July 1965: “Dr Who not on today, grrr…”) or as in the example, not on.

But, I guess, beyond the newly found ‘stress-relief’, diaries are also a good source of research: they provide anecdotal documentary evidence and therefore, an eye into previous times.

Dr Irving Finkel has been amassing diaries over at the British Museum for years now. He says: “As long as people write diaries and as long as there are examples around, they ought to be rescued.” Irv, you can have mine from the 70s if you like - I put in so many secret

codes (for encrypting my nefarious goings-on) that I haven’t a single clue what was actually going on.

Mind you, truth be told, most it was pretty mundane. “Not so Wattsie,” says Irving, “people talk about the weather and mundane things… then something happens, they meet someone, there’s an adventure and suddenly you find, whenever you peep into people’s lives, that nobody has a completely normal life.”

Oh, cheers Irv, maybe I’m windswept and interesting after all?

Another recently released study shows that men who have a shed to potter about it live a small percentage longer than non-shed occupiers. So, if we combine the stress relief of diary writing and the longevity afforded by shed dwelling, maybe in the future we’ll find lots more men of over a hundred years of age - and shed loads (excuse the pun) of more anecdotal evidence for dear old Irving to sort out.

Sitting tenant helps out

by Jack Troughton BUMS WILL be on comfortable seats after the Union Musical in Gata de Gorgos after twice annual tenant Javea Players gave a hand in a long-awaited face lift.

The Union Musical Gata Association was founded over 80 years ago and has used the concert hall – complete with second-hand cinema seats – for the last 30 years for concerts and rehearsals. New seats have now been installed by Javea Players – and the theatre group has also lent some of its expertise in the fields of light, sound and acoustics.

New ceiling lights have been put in place, the stage has been extended and the walls of the stage have been lined with wood to improve acoustics – while speakers at the rear of the hall insure everyone will hear what is

happening on stage.

Over the last decade Javea Players has used the Union Musical for two shows a year and it was felt appropriate the group helped out with the renovations.

Javea Players spokesman Bernard King said: “At long last everyone will have a comfortable seat. Hitherto, the seats in the Union musical were pretty uncomfortable antiquities. They were over 50 years old and had been bought from a cinema in La Xara.

“The new seats, assembled by members of Javea Players and installed by Union musical members, are much wider and very much comfortable.” The audiences at the Spanish premiere of ‘Yes, Prime Minister’ have the opportunity to test drive the improvements when the show opens for a five night run from 21st October.

San Miguel art exhibition

By Keith Nicol LA CUEVA de La Maria, in San Miguel will be the setting this weekend for a very special art exhibition from Olga Sánchez. An exhibition of her work in La Cueva de La María, Calle Góngora, San Miguel de Salinas will be on show over the next two weekends in the very unusual cave houses that have become home to local artists.

Olga, a native of San Miguel and a graduate in Fine Arts

from the University of Valencia, has won many prizes for her work, including the first prize for the Rapid Painting Competition held annually in Torrevieja and on two occasions, the winning posters for the Semana Santa Week.

She has exhibited throughout the Valencian region and also taught drawing and painting in various centres in the regions of Murcia and Valencia. The local educational institute in San Miguel is fortunate to have

Music, dance, singers, comedy and flamenco are all part of a one night only spectacular at Teatro Pego in an event back by Pego Town Hall.

One of the organisers, Luigi Vernazza said the variety show was a multi-national showcase and a major charitable contribution would be made following the event.

“The show has been welcomed by the Mayor and Town Hall of Pego as a concept to integrate the local Spanish, British, German and Dutch communities,” he said.

THROUGHOUT THE year members of the Royal Air Forces Association Branches worldwide, work continuously to raise funds in support of this charity, whose aim is to help both past and present members of the Royal Air Forces and their dependents, when they are in need.

Whereas in the past most of the support went to the older generation of ex-RAF personnel, recent conflicts have vastly increased the need to support the younger ex-RAF personnel and those presently serving their Country. This year, a total of 6,000€ has been raised through fund raising efforts.

The one concentrated fund raising event of the year, took place in the two week period from 7th to the 19th September. In the first week, ‘WINGS WEEK’ the managers of the Iceland stores located in San Fulgencio, San Javier and Torrevieja once more gave their permission for members to collect donations within their stores. This kind act resulted in over 3,000€ being donated by a most generous public and RAFA wished to pass on their sincere thanks to store managers and their staff and all those members of the public who so generously supported this cause. In the second week, on Thursday 19th September, a Grand Charity Draw was made at the Battle of Britain Dinner/Dance held at the El Prado restaurant in San Miguel, which resulted in a further 600€ being raised.

Valencia pedals for UNICEF…

VALENCIA BICYCLE Day was commemorated this year with a day of solidarity, sport and family entertainment involving an estimated 10,000 participants. The day began at 10am with a tour that continued until 1.30pm with prizes and gifts awarded. ‘Pedal for the Children of UNICEF’ was the support slogan for the event with the aim of drawing attention to the plight of children suffering from Polio worldwide. ‘1 + 1 euro = 2 vaccines’ was the banner on flyers, registration forms and posters.

LAST SATURDAY, reach Out Charity held a fun day at the Marina Bar, Calle de las Rosas in Torrevieja. The Marina Bar held yet another fun afternoon, which was an outstanding success, raising an impressive 600€ for the charity. The afternoon featured a Style fashion show, Indian head massage, Tombola, Auction and various stalls selling jewellery, cakes, Avon cosmetics and more, all under the watchful eyes of Dave and

Rita Monaghan who run the bar so successfully. Reach Out wanted to thank Pat, Isobel, Angie Pete, Debbie, Dennis, Pam, Duncan and the bar for all their monetary donations. A special mention must go to the anonymous couple who kindly donated 50€ to the charity and of course to all the support from the many people attending the event. All in all a very heart warming and successful day raising money for this very worthwhile charity.

Raising the standard

by Jack Troughton A NEW standard for District North of the Royal British Legion in Spain was officially dedicated on Tuesday at a moving ceremony attended by over 120 members and friends.

The flag was presented to the district – its boundaries run from the French boarder to Baza in Granada – as a gift by Chairman Chris Wyatt and his wife Peggy.

The ceremony took place at the little church at Mil Palmeras, Pilar de Horadada, and guests were treated to the thrilling sight and sound of the Torrevieja Pipes and drums leading the standards of the various branches of the Legion.

District Chaplain, Reverend Canon Terence Sampson took the service

and the standard was presented by Chris into the safe keeping of Keith Carter, District Ceremonial Officer and Standard Bearer.

The Pheonix concert Band accompanied the congregation with hymns and ended the service by playing the evocative ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’. The band’s soloist played the Last Port and Reveille to mark the start and end of an emotional two mionute’s silence.

CROWN All Legion standards are made with the Union Flag in the top left hand corner – symbolic of unity and loyalty to the Crown, community and nation. The Royal Blue signifies fidelity and the gold band recalls all those who died in service of the United Kingdom.

Chris said afterwards: “I am very

proud to be able to present District North with a standard to be paraded at many of the events in the area.

“Earlier this year our district was awarded the Maurice Cup for efficiency, having been pitted against other counties and districts of the Legion worldwide. Part of this award was a scroll which is included on the standard.”

The next big event for district North is the launch of the 2013 Poppy Appeal in Benidorm on 16th October.

Time for Associations day photo THE V ANNUAL Associations Day will take place on 20th October 2013. And to make the occasion extra special, Torrevieja’s Department of Citizen Participation has awarded the task of shooting the huge associations gathering photograph to the team of ‘Objectivo Torrevieja’ “Objetivo Torrevieja”, Pedro Grimao, Alfonso Pascual and their director Fernando Guardiola.

2013 marks the fourth ‘Associations Photo’ and it will be held to coincide with the celebration of V Associations Day on 20th October, in the specially erected tent that will be installed on the Paseo Vista Alegre.

The exact place and circumstances of where all association members will pose for the special photograph will be revealed in the near future. The first such photo was taken on Playa de los Locos by Justo Gil and his team from ‘Forofoto’. In 2011, the stage chosen was Torre del Moro and the photographer in charge was, Antonio García. Last year the “heart” of the associations was photographed by Eliseo Montesinos, in the Nelson Mandela Stadium. The survival of the fishing net lady JOSEFA RUIZ is a 73-year-old widow and the only woman left in the fishing village of Santa Pola who can still make fishing nets.

Josefa, affectionately known in Santa Pola as ‘Pepita’ keeps the craft of making fishing nets alive after spending 50 years perfecting the art. In the little kitchen of her village house she makes nets that can carry up to 40kilos of fish or shellfish for her children and grandchildren and she also takes outside orders to augment her pension. And although some of the local fishermen try to make and mend their own nets, Josefa says with confidence that they are not as strong as hers!

‘Pepita’, who lost her husband four years ago and has since battled to survive cancer, has now begun to teach her granddaughter the art of making fishing nets in the hope that her craft will not die out.

Nuisance Tripping RCDs ONE WAY of dealing with nuisance tripping is to fit an automatic ‘recloser’ RCD. This was the subject of my article in RTN 726. The issue produced a spate of emails from our readers who experience the problem from time to time.

In the vast majority of cases the fault is downstream, somewhere in the property. Invariably the trips are caused by deteriorating insulation on heater elements in water heaters, cooker elements, electric kettles, tubular heaters or even the defrost cycle on the fridge. Inevitably the tripping is caused from the ingress of damp or water into the electrical system. Although regarded as a nuisance the fault is with the deteriorated element and not the RCD, replacing the offending element or appliance will resolve the problem.

An unusual characteristic of a RCD is that they can become weakened over a period of time, replacing the device can cure the problem.

Across Spain it is common for the whole installation to be on a single RCD. This can cause secondary safety problems with loss of lighting and defrosting of food if a trip occurs. The cause of the nuisance tripping can be due to accumulated or burden currents caused by items with lowered insulation resistance. This may occur due to older equipment or even wiring in buildings where prolonged damp and rain conditions can cause the insulation resistance to lower due to the ingress of moisture. The individual

items may each be electrically safe but a large number of small burden currents accumulates and reduces the tripping level. Dividing the circuits and fitting additional RCDs can solve the problem.

Given certain conditions outside the property, upstream faults can cause nuisance tripping. While voltage and current on the earth line is usually fault current from a live wire, this is not always the case, thus there are other situations in which an RCD can nuisance trip. When an installation has two connections to earth, a nearby high current lightning strike will cause a voltage gradient in the soil, presenting the RCD sense mechanism with enough voltage to cause it to trip. If you are experience tripping during lightning storms it is recommended to fit a Surge Protection Device.

If the installations earth rod is placed close to the earth rod of a neighbouring building, a high earth leakage current in the other building can raise the local ground potential and cause a voltage difference across the two earths, again tripping the RCD. For upstream faults, due to the logistics involved in tracing the problem, the most practical solution is to fit a recloser RCD. WITH THE continuing widely promoted message ‘Eat five or more portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day for a healthier diet’ no Spanish garden or apartment terrace should be without fruit trees or plants. In less than a square metre it is possible to grow alpine or ordinary strawberries in a strawberry barrel or window box and citrus, peach, apple, pear, pomegranate, avocado and fig trees on dwarf root stocks grow perfectly well in containers provided you fill the containers with a rich in nutrient and water retaining/ well draining soil mix.

In a larger garden it is not difficult to fit in ten types of fruit that mature in different months of the year and to be able to harvest one fruit crop or another on every day of the year.

The thing is to select varieties of fruit that you like to eat raw or cook and which are appropriate for the microclimate of your garden. Over seventy types of fruit are described in ‘Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain’ with indications of their frost and drought hardiness to help you make a wise choice. There are plenty of possibilities for all regions and locations.

Favourites from our garden are the winter tangerines and mandarins, spring to winter raspberries (yes for eight months of the year), early summer wild strawberries and apricots, late summer figs almonds and grapes (plus mangoes until the heavy frost of 2005), autumn cacti fruit quince and persimmons, and lemons on almost every day of the year from a

perpetual flowering and fruiting Lunar lemon tree.

Unfortunately, we often lose the avocado and pistachio nut flowers to a spring storm.

Most families do not require a large orchard. Indeed, many inland expatriates with 10,000 square metre plots have discovered that it is impossible to cope with the ripening fruit of several hundred trees and vines.

Spaniards feed surplus oranges to their sheep and goats as it is less expensive to do so than pay to harvest fruit that can be only sold for very low prices.

Luckily, many fruit trees have multiple benefits so they easily fit into mixed gardens for they are among the best trees for spring blossom, then the colouring fruit add interest followed by the vivid autumn leaf colours of the deciduous trees and early winter colours of persimmons and pomegranates well after the leaves have fallen.

Combine the above with growing your own vegetables and you can become largely self sufficient in fruit and vegetables in even a moderate sized garden here in Spain, and it’s much easier to do so than in rain-ravaged Britain. When you have gluts, as said last week, it’s not difficult to process many excess crops for later use by freezing, bottling, making jams and chutneys, and drying them in the sun or rather easier in a heated air tray dryer. pensioners are being deprived of £43,000 over the course of retirement when they buy an annuity from the wrong provider or in the wrong country.

THE INSURANCE industry has at last come clean on the abysmal way it treats loyal pension customers at retirement. In a landmark move, its trade body has forced firms to disclose the rates offered to savers when they turn their nest egg into an income for life by buying an annuity.

The data, made public for the first time last month, suggests some firms make ‘excessive’ profits by steering existing customers into poor deals.

The worst offenders are short-changing long-standing customers by up to 30pc. This is a loss of £1,444 on the yearly payout from a £100,000 pension pot, compared with an identical offer available if shopped around.

This is a huge problem because an annuity purchase is irreversible and you can lose your capital without a risk warning. Most people just go ahead and take their annuity from the pension provider without seeking Independent Advice or looking at alternatives.

Savers persuaded to take substandard deals are locked in for life, turning the £1,444 annual loss into £43,320 over a 30 year retirement.

Many pensioners will die before their life savings are returned in full, calculations show. On the poorest rates, someone would need to live to 86 just to get his or her money back.

In some instances, savers suffering illnesses are being offered less than half the going rate for their shorter life expectancy.

More than half of the 420,000 people who buy an annuity each year could be affected. Research shows that 52pc accept the deal offered by their existing pension provider, netting providers an estimated £1bn a year.

Counterfeit shoe gang busted

IS IT possible to change a divorce court order and agreement?

SOME WEEKS ago, we received from the First Instance Court No.2 of Molina del Segura, in Murcia, a court order agreeing with our petition and defence.

The ruling was that the economic agreement reached by the ex-spouses (an English man and a Spanish woman) in their divorce in the United Kingdom should not be changed.

The former wife of my client, an English man, petitioned to change the previous divorce agreement, due to her difficult economic situation.

In her claim she asked for the costs of the children’s trips to see their father in England during holidays, be paid now by the father, although in the divorce

agreement it was agreed that she would pay for them.

This kind of legal action is known in Spanish Family Law as a modification of divorce or separation measures.

The basis of these kind of legal actions, is article number 91 of the Spanish Civil Code, which states that in the court’s separation orders, the judge must decide the following measures: children, family home, charges and debts of the marriage, and liquidation of the matrimonial economic regime, etc. They also state that these measures could be modified if the circumstances changed substantially.

This was the key to the above court case.

We argued in our conclusion in the hearing that the claimant did not provide proof of the substantial change in her circumstances.

Nor was evidence provided to the court about her income and economic situation at the time of the divorce, or any major change in her circumstances now that would justify the revision and modification of the divorce agreement.

Therefore, readers should remember that if they are divorced or separated, their court order it is not definitive since by definition, in Spanish family law all divorce and separation court orders could be changed and reviewed if it is proven that there are substantial changes to the circumstances.

Some common myths corrected SINCE 1994 Wincham has been successfully helping people of various nationalities who own Spanish property with the burden of Spanish Inheritance Tax (IHT). Over the years we have experienced many misconceptions surrounding the ownership of Spanish property within a UK Limited company and some of these are explained below.

SPANISH PROPERTY OWNERSHIP WITHIN A UK LIMITED COMPANY There is often confusion between a UK Limited Company and an offshore Company. A UK company is not classed as ‘offshore’, and in line with EU treaties, UK Companies cannot be charged the 3% annual tax that offshore companies have to pay in Spain.

Following the 2008 UK Finance Act and Budget the Directors of a UK Limited Company are no longer subject to ‘Benefit in Kind’ Tax on the ownership of foreign property. A further advantage of the UK company structure is the ability to offset certain expenses such as council tax bills, maintenance/

upgrades, car hire and flight costs for the Directors when travelling to and from Spain.

SELLING THE SPANISH PROPERTY The property can still be sold from the UK company should the purchaser prefer not to retain the ownership in the UK company. The advantage of purchasing the property in a UK Company is that there are no Spanish Inheritance Tax implications for the Beneficiaries and no 7-10% property purchase tax payable on the purchase of the company: in addition the seller does not pay the 3% Withholding Tax following the UK Company sale.

COSTS & TIME The UK Corporate structure is a simple solution costing less than most probate and legal fees which also saves the additional Spanish reporting and taxation burdens for the Beneficiaries. THE ROOMS Everything is new with exactly what you would expect from a newly refurbished 4* hotel of this class. Overall very deserving of the 4* rating with little extras such as better quality fluffy towels and a decent selection of toiletries. Oh! And you really could eat of the floor, the cleaning was impeccable, a credit to those often forgotten housekeeping staff.

THE FOOD This is where the Riviera really does come up trumps. Friendly and happy staff (makes a change!). Meals are served buffet style, but, with a superior choice to that served in some hotels! Replenished often (keeping food fresh) with a great choice of salads, hot dishes and very much geared toward the high numbers of British guests who stay here this time of year.

This is reiterated time and again in many online reviews. Breakfast will fill you up for the day!

THE POOL Perhaps the only drawback is the hotel pool which is a tad small and tends to get little sunshine until the afternoon. However, it is a really pleasant area to sit and the pool bar offers very cheap drink (the hotel do not charge 4* prices) and a snack menu that offers excellent value too, just in case you are still hungry after the massive breakfast.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW When compared to other hotels in Benidorm the Riviera Beachotel is small with just 99 rooms and is therefore not going to be overly crowded at meal times, around the pool or in the bar during the daytime. The terrace bar is open to the public and is a popular place at night due to the low prices (Bucket of 5 bottles of beer from only 4.50€) and entertainment so grab a seat early! This is now a top selling hotel in Benidorm and should be booked as early as possible to ensure you get a room. What do you take back?

WHEN VISITORS come on holiday to Spain they often have a shopping list of things to take back with them. Obviously, cigarettes and alcohol top that list whether you are a smoker or not. Although technically illegal, many will bring back a carton or two for friends and family. Remember to only buy at authorized outlets – there is one at the airport on floor-2, where all the shuttle buses depart from.

The savings in comparison to UK prices certainly makes it worthwhile. Spirits are also considerably cheaper - not so much the premium ones such as Smirnoff but the local Spanish brands such as ‘Aguilar’. Take, for example, a litre of Vodka or Gin - you can pay as little as 4.95€ and it comes in a plastic bottle too!

But the current ‘must buy’ items are ‘Flossy’s’ – vividly-coloured canvas pumps / deck shoes in a variety of styles. They can be bought here in most shops for less than half of the UK price - this probably explains why holiday makers are now doing Flossy runs instead of cigarette runs! I wonder what the next craze will be…

Granada ROMANTIC THOUGHTS of gypsy dancers swirling to beat of Spanish guitars actually come to life in the Albaicin district of Granada.

The grounds and the buildings of the Alhambra Palaces are recognised internationally as the finest example of Muslin architecture in Western Europe.

Below the palaces the city of Granada buzzes day and night. The Alcaiceria, the old Moorish trading district with its horseshoe-shaped gateways give the area an Arabic flavour and offers all sorts of goods.

Amongst these are the fine silver objects and printed leather for which Granada is known.

A cathedral which dates back to the times of the Queen Isabel and her consort Ferdinand is very much a part of the city centre. Charming squares, filled with cafes are to be found in all parts of the city. Close to the Cathedral in the Capilla Real (Royal Chapel), within which lie the remains of Queen Isabel, Ferdinand, their daughter Joana the Mad and her husband Philip the Fair.

Potentially unwanted program HELLO AUNTY: I am having problems with a virus called PUP.Optional.T. Either Superantispyware or Malwarebyte picks it up normally three times when I do a scan but it keeps coming back even if I close down the computer after removal. I have looked on the net for a solution but they offer different ideas on its removal and they appear complicated. Can you help? Trevor.

Aunty says: A Pup means a Potentially Unwanted Program. In short your antivirus thinks you accidentally installed a potentially harmful program - usually some sort of ‘toolbar’ or search engine setting. Or it may be a legitimate problem. Although Superantispyware or Malwarebyte pick it up and say they remove it, they may not have removed

every trace of the unwanted program, which is why it keeps coming back.

One option is to perform the scans again, (do not reboot the PC) then go through the list of installed programs (in the install / uninstall option in control panel) and see which of them should not be there and uninstall it. Re-run the scans again, and hopefully it will be removed.

Also, go into the ‘options’ of your internet browser and see if you have any unwanted ‘add ons’ or ‘tool bars’ and uninstall those. Also, check your browser’s ‘search’ settings, which may have been changed so you are no longer using your preferred search engine.

Internet error message Hi Aunty: I have a VAIO laptop. Each time I open the internet I get the message ‘Internet has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.

Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available’. I click on ‘close program’ and the internet comes up. Do you know what the problem is and how I can rectify it? Jacqui Aunty says: The problem is that there is an issue with the browser you are using. This may be down to: The browser not being installed correctly - reinstall the browser or use another such as Chrome or Firefox. A ‘third party’ toolbar or ‘addon’ is not installed correctly or crashing - uninstall toolbars that you may not need - or an addon like Adobe Flash is not installed in the browser, and the pages you are trying to view need this to work.

Moving emails HELLO AGAIN Aunty! I want to transfer some of the e-mails I have saved in folders on Yahoo also onto a memory stick. I have looked for an answer on the internet but each one needs expensive kit buying which as a pensioner is not possible. Can you advise me, once again? Lorna.

Aunty says: Yahoo stores emails ‘in the cloud’ - on the internet. As far as I am aware Yahoo has no export function so you cannot export emails directly from Yahoo. The only way to export Yahoos emails to a USB stick, is to use a third party program like Thunderbird, or Incredimail, or Outlook, that downloads and stored the emails on your PC. Then you can save whole folders or individual emails to another place.

Life travel Teruel: with only a small amount of bull IN THE southern most province of Aragón, Teruel city is only a couple of hours away from bustling Valencia and the shimmering beaches of the Costa Azahar, but a world away in temperament.

Teruel is a little gem architecturally and the city is best known as the centre of some of the most beautiful examples of Mudéjar architecture in Spain. Mudejar emerged as an architectural style in the 12th Century on the Iberian peninsula as a result of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian cultures living side by side. It is characterised by the inventive use of brick and glazed tiles in architecture; tile-work will often be cobalt blue and white, although a lustrous green predominates in Teruel.

The most glorious examples of this beautiful architectural style in the city are the Towers of San Pedro, San Martín, El Salvador and the Cathedral. The tower of El Salvador is the only one that can be ascended but for an unusual look at it go to the first floor of the Café El Torre next door; you get a wonderful view of the tile-work glistening above.

The Cathedral of Santa María has a beautiful belfry-tower but it’s worth paying the couple of euros entrance fee to have

a gander at the ceiling of carved panels painted in polychrome wood with images that represent Teruel life in the middle ages.

You need to get there just as the guide begins her chat (in Spanish) because the ceiling is only lit until she moves on to the next part of her tour.

On top of a pillar in the historic centre, the Plaza Torico, sits the symbol of Teruel, el Torico itself, a statue of a bull atop a fluted column. The name comes from one of the many ways the Spanish use to create a diminutive, in this case –ico, thus describing their icon as ‘the little bull’ – and it comes as a shock to see how small the statue actually is, given the Spanish propensity for big and bold in public sculpture.

Legend has it that in the 13th-Century two young people, Diego de Marcilla and Isabel de Segura, fell in love and wanted to marry. Isabel came from wealthy stock, but Diego was skint and her parents forbade the match. In a sort-of magnanimous gesture, Isabel’s father gave Diego five years in which to make his fortune. At the end of this time he returned to Teruel a wealthy man, only to find his bride-to-be already married to a

local nobleman. Poor young Diego died of a broken heart and Isabel, full of despair at his death, snuffed it the following day. In true fairy story style, the story of the Spanish Romeo and Juliet was made into a film, but you can see the couple, forever linked by alabaster hands, in the cloisters of the Church of San Pedro.

A couple of streets beyond, on Calle del Rincon, is Fonda del Tozal, said to be the oldest hostelry in Spain – and where have we heard that before? – Although judging by its interior, it’s quite possible. From its narrow entrance it opens up to a cavernous interior of ancient bricks, massive stone blocks and great stout beams. Jugs, agricultural gubbins and other object-bric-a-brac fill shelf space, but where ostlers and travellers would have once argued over the cost of a bag of hay for the horse outside, ancient locals and pre-discotime youths share counter space, surrounded by games machines, wide screen TV and brain-sludging music. But worth a quick look.

There’s plenty to see without going outside the Valencian Community, but if you feel a little adventurous one day it’s worth the trundle up the road from Valencia to lovely old Teruel.

The spirit of New Orleans

By Jack Troughton THE EXCELLENT Bourbon Street Stompers make a welcome return to the Costa Blanca next month with a touch of true New Orleans in vocalist Joshua Stewart.

Concerts Costa Blanca have been able to give the tour an additional sparkle after putting Joshua – an opera singer from New Orleans – with a band dedicated to playing the music of the city.

The Stompers are celebrating their 20th anniversary and are believed to be the best classic New Orleans jazz band in Europe – if not the world. The seven-piece are from Essen in Germany and made its Costa Blanca debut back in 2009 in front of a 1,000 strong audience in Altea.

The Stompers were back by popular demand in 2011 and again last year, when the group were a great success in Valencia, Torrevieja and Teulada.

Last year promoters Concerts Costa Blanca – perhaps best known for arranging classical concerts – presented an appearance of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Philadelphia at the Teulada-Moraira Auditori.

The American ensemble included Joshua who was about to join the Munich Opera House. Born in New Orleans, he gave wonderful renditions of Negro Spirituals.

It was discovered before launching a career in opera he had sung with New Orleans bands in the birthplace of jazz, including the legendary Preservation Hall.

SING The promoters introduced singer to band and are proud it has proved to be a success – Joshua will sing with the Stompers on the fourth tour of the Costa Blanca.

The tour begins at the new 1,200-seat Auditorio de la Diputacion in Alicante on Friday 11th October and on Saturday 12th October the band returns to the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira.

And on Sunday 13th October a section of the band, including Joshua,

will play a special supper concert at Restaurante Paraiso, Parcent – an opportunity to enjoy the music in a much more intimate atmosphere.

Life recipe

Moussaka MOUSSAKA IS one of those classic dishes that everyone has tasted on Greek holidays, but very few people cook it for themselves. The principal ingredient is aubergine and the Greeks would use minced lamb. This is my version using minced beef and the topping is a classic Béchamel sauce smothered with cheese.

• 2-3 large aubergines, sliced into rings about 1cm thick.

• 500g minced beef or lamb.

• 2 medium onions, coarsely chopped.

• 1tsp dried mixed herbs.

• A 400g can of chopped tomatoes.

• 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped.

• Olive oil.

• Salt and pepper.

• 50 g grated cheese.

For the Béchamel sauce • 400 ml milk.

• 10 whole black peppercorns.

• A few parsley stalks • A small piece of onion.

• A bay leaf

• 40g butter.

• 25g plain flour.

• ½ tsp grated nutmeg.

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. 2. Season the sliced aubergine with plenty of salt and pepper. Add a good measure of oil to a large frying pan and fry the aubergines for 3-4 minutes on each side until they begin to brown.

(You may need to do this in batches).

Set aside.

3. In the same frying pan, cook the onion and minced beef until the meat is just brown. Add the mixed herbs, garlic and tomatoes and heat until bubbling. Season with salt and pepper and set aside while you make the Béchamel sauce.

4. In a small saucepan, gently heat the milk with the peppercorns, parsley stalks, onion and bay leaf. Allow to simmer for a few minutes then strain the milk into a jug and discard the other ingredients. Melt the butter in the pan then remove from the heat and stir in the flour until you have a thick paste.

Add the milk a little at a time, stirring all the while until you have a smooth sauce.

Return the pan to the heat and whisk until the mixture thickens. Remove from the heat and stir in the nutmeg.

5. Now it’s time to assemble the dish.

Place half the fried aubergine in the bottom of a shallow ovenproof dish, then cover with the minced beef mixture. Add the rest of the aubergines in a layer, then spread the Béchamel sauce over the top. Sprinkle with the grated cheese and then bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes.

Serve immediately with crusty bread and a crisp green salad.

Serves 4 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes

FLU! ARE you going to end up confined to bed for a week, feeling horrendous and wishing that you had gone along for your flu jab?

Flu is a horrible illness although you will normally make a full recovery and forget about it until next year!

However, it should be remembered that flu can also be a killer. Every year, flu takes the lives of up to 500,000 people and a further 5 million may suffer complications or go on to develop more serious illness.

Many people choose not to be vaccinated as they mistakenly believe that the vaccine gives you flu. This is not so! You may feel a little ‘off-colour’ following the vaccine but if you develop true influenza this is because you have been in contact with an infected person prior to vaccination!

You may develop flu for up to two weeks after receiving your jab as it takes up to two weeks before the flu vaccine starts give to protection.

Everybody over the age of 65 is advised to have the vaccine as many older people die needlessly every year from complications arising from flu. Pregnant women are now also advised to be vaccinated.

YOU SHOULD ALSO BE VACCINATED IF YOU HAVE: Any chronic lung disease such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema ,cystic fibrosis and asthma Heart disease including angina and heart failure or if you have ever had a heart attack Kidney disease including nephrotic syndrome, kidney failure or if you have a had a kidney transplant Serious liver disease such as cirrhosis A weakened immune system: this incudes those having chemotherapy or steroid treatment (high dose). Also those who have HIV/AIDS or had their spleen removed Certain serious diseases of the nervous system such as multiple sclerosis You should also have the vaccine if you are a healthcare worker or if you are a long term carer of an elderly, sick or disabled person.

The Google Glass knee replacement THE WORLD’S first surgical operation in the world carried out via Google Glass took place in Spain this week. Surgeon Pedro Guillén wore the glasses over his own spectacles and performed a knee replacement operation witnessed by thousands at 265 locations in universities, hospitals and clinics worldwide, thanks to Google Glass technology.

The only ‘glitch’ occurred in certain locations in China and Africa which experienced interruptions in internet service. And the two-hour procedure, condensed into a 48 minute recording, is now available on YouTube.

S.O.S.

SENDING OUT an S.O.S is an international alert signal sent to rescue people in need. International and a High Priority, the message is to “Save Our Souls” and it sets in process all the necessary requirements to save a life in an emergency. Why we refer to our bodies as a soul, when some of us have never acknowledged the mere existence of such a spiritual receptor within our bodies; I do not know.

I do know that the soul is the black box of our lives. Within us is the apparatus that records freely from birth to death that which we have taken into our conscience. Good or bad actions may have guided us along the way, but that which is pure and of good content is embedded within the confines of the conception of our individual and highly tuned inner self in the form of a safe keeping soul.

I have run many workshops on working with soul energy. I have always begun them the same way. I ask that everybody closes their eyes and places their right hand on their liver.

The result is very funny, especially as many people have no idea whatsoever about the workings of their own body, even though the liver is the hardest working organ of all of them.

Thus the hand can appear to be placed in various places of the body. My response never changes. People have come to work with a visionary part of the body, but they don’t know where fixed body organs are. The living soul is a seat of energy and has scant regard for anatomy and physiology.

It exists in the body as a receptor of the font of human kindness. It is the unwritten word of love that has spoken for you on many occasions. It is your Alpha and your Omega, and it will never let you down.

If it’s your birthday this week

Soul music is designed to be taken into the heart, since it is played by those who acknowledge this and manufacture it for the benefit of others. Can there be a more soulful purpose than to share a soulful tune with someone knowing that it will go straight to their soul? Music in general has appropriate effects on us, and our appreciation is soul based, and as such highly personal and enjoyable.

The soul is a source of learning about ourselves, and we all need to do this to survive. Charging the soul is a personal thing as we indulge in pleasures that reverberate within us.

Linked very strongly with our conscience the soul is able to record and store that which we have done to charge it. It proves a highly tuned and highly sensitive record of ourselves and is highly personal and unique. The good things we do on this Earth bring us vibrations which can be stored in the soul. The great achievements of our past have all played a part in the vibration of our tender soul at some time. The kindnesses and the thoughtful care that we have imparted is our individual expression.

Sailing through life the soul is the only part of the body that survives death. Our bodies will shrivel and perish, but it is the soul that will send our energies onwards to the other side.

Coated in an etheric coating, the soul departs for the longest journey of our experience and sends the content of our consciousness across new Worlds to a new destination, where it will be translated as our greatest book of love, ever.

Kenny, I have always had faith in my Angels, but they did nothing to help my little niece as she died, aged seven, from a heart complaint. I am finding it hard to cope with this especially as I am known to be the spiritual one of the family and everyone has turned to me. Kelly K. Kelly, I know how you must be feeling, and I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is hard, and it tests our faith when bad things happen, and they do. Not all can live, and none of us can live on this Earth for ever. We are born into a lottery and will experience death all around us as it is the culmination of this Earthly life for us all. Some get many years and others enjoy such a short time. Our time is our time. Hopefully your niece has made her transition, and I know that she is being looked after.

There is no pain and suffering in the Spirit World, and maybe, though it is cold comfort, this is the message that you can pass to the family, who after all cannot blame you for your faith. I would get comfort knowing that years of terrible pain may have been the alternative to what was a short sweet life and a painfree passage to a better World?

The courage of your convictions brings you a route to success that will surprise you. Stay true to yourself and do things your inimitable way, it bodes well and you deserve to make all necessary changes!

Noel’s world of golf

LAST FRIDAY I was in the professional shop in Alicante Golf when a secretary of one of our local golf societies came in to pay the green fees for his members who were about to enjoy playing.

This golf society is one of the best run and most respected in the area and should be admired for the way they do business with the local golf courses.

It is well established and their members are always polite and well turned out. As a result they receive good treatment at the golf courses they play on their rota.

I was lucky enough to enter into a conversation with the secretary who told me how he was recently making reservations with the golf courses they had chosen to support for the next year and where they could get fairly priced green fees. He was impressed with most of the golf courses he had dealt with because they were open to do a deal directly with the society and cut out any middle man.

Imagine my reaction then when he told me one of the courses he had approached informed him that for May 2014 the society would have to pay 72€ per player including buggy for a round of golf! That is a totally unreasonable amount to ask anyone to play any golf course here in South East Spain.

My attitude towards this and other golf courses that blatantly overcharge their loyal customers is simple: boycott every one of them until they see sense and tell all the other societies in the area to do likewise. They will soon come around to the correct way of thinking.

In recent years we have seen European Tour Stage two qualifying events at a number of our local golf courses and that has been a tremendous boost to golf here in our area but the golf courses must realise that they are not that special just because they have been chosen to stage such an event. The only reason they are chosen by the tour is because they are convenient. Okay they are reasonably good golf courses but they are not as special as they seem to think they are.

To blatantly try and overcharge any golfer is wrong; to overcharge the people who pay the basic

bills each year is a horrendous act of racketeering that must be stopped. It is up to you society golfers to do it and vote with your feet. Play the golf courses that look after you, not the ones ready to rip you off at the first opportunity.

Tour Talk THE FEDEX Cup is the USPGA Tour’s way of ending their season with a bang. Certainly the possibility of earning $11.44 during that week is sure to get you a tremendous amount of publicity. Over the years the Tour has changed the way the FedEx Cup has been run a number of times and they now seem to have got the formula just right.

No longer is it a foregone conclusion that the leader of the money list will win and this year the list of winners meant that we would not know who would win until the last minute so any keen golfer had the perfect excuse to stay glued to the TV over the weekend as some of the best players on the planet tried to win a pension pot that

most of us can only dream of.

Henrik Stenson of Sweden had the pressure of leading the event from start to finish and became the first European to win the FedEx Cup thanks to a welcome return to form this year.

Life cars Road Test - Chrysler Grand Voyager Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer

THERE IS only one luxury people mover and that is the Chrysler Grand Voyager.

It is fortunate that I have a grand voyage of my own planned to really put it through its paces. And I am pleased to report that it scored very highly with the Saunders family.

I want to whisk my family away for a long weekend to Tichborne’s Farm Cottages in Wiltshire, UK and all our belongings would not have fitted into a standard car. It is only when you have at least two children that you realise many cars just aren’t big enough anymore. They won’t fit all the paraphernalia. But this cavernous yank easily swallows everything including our cumbersome tandem pushchair, together with one crib, four days of food for the self-catering break, various

suitcases for the girls and a couple of shirts for me...

Life is so very easy with the Chrysler. Everything is electrically operated including the power folding wing mirrors and front seats. The rear doors and boot can be opened or closed by pressing the appropriate button on the keyfob or by the front seat occupants who can push the roof mounted switches as you can see in the videos at testdrives. biz. The rear passengers aren’t forgotten either because there is a button close to the inside of each door for them to use if desired. The doors also automatically slide open when the external handle is pulled.

These rear doors are especially user-friendly when children’s car seats need fitting because there is so much space. Traditional car doors that open outwards often pose a problem when they cannot be fully opened, for instance where there’s another car parked next to you in a car park.

The third row of seats accommodating three passengers, are easily lifted at the click of a button in the boot.

These rise or fall with ease and when stowed, the boot is simply enormous.

My wife likes the fact that there is a space between the two seats in the second row,

giving passengers plenty of room and allowing for long items to be easily stored.

Simple to pull up blinds are also fitted inside all the blacked out rear windows for extra protection from the sun.

As a treat my eldest daughter was allowed to watch a DVD and headphones are stored in a useful overhead compartment.

This large vehicle is famed for its regular appearance in BBC1’s The Apprentice, where it ferries hapless candidates to Lord Sugar’s various challenges. It’s an ideal vehicle for such activities because there is plenty of room inside, making it perhaps more user-friendly than the slightly cheaper but more traditional black cab taxi. With its brilliant black finish, chrome grille, door mirrors and handles it cuts a dashing figure commanding many a second glance from admiring motorists.
