British Fancy Dress Day The rain kept away yesterday as yet again the Brits turned out to celebrate the annual British Fancy Dress Day in Benidorm. Read the full story on page 8.

Jane and Hans Lentz and husband imported Finnish-made wooden houses – allegedly unsuitable for the temperature extremes of Spain – to construct for customers and also ran the Lentssons over 50s Resort in La Xara.

However, many homes never arrived despite clients paying thousands of pounds in advance and the resort closed after the land owner prevented access when the Lentz’s failed to pay rent.

Meanwhile Irish-born Jane – described as the driving force of the company despite her name not appearing as a director - and her husband had left for Finland where they pioneered Lapland Christmas resort within the Arctic Circle – a project that also failed.

In August, RTN reported how they were now managing a holiday resort ‘Park Westerkogge’ near Berkhout in Holland. Dutch newspapers discovered the unanswered allegations about their Spanish business and took up the story.

In a short statement issued through lawyers, Jane and Hans maintained that as far as they remembered “all houses were built” and any “accidently” not completed were because of “missing licences to build”.

The couple also said that when they left for Finland the business was left to their sons to run – although they left a contact address for all clients.

TRAGEDY Diana Lindsay-Vosper said: “It is a blatant lie that everything was built. They have told a pack of lies all along and what happened is an absolute tragedy.”

Diana, 78, and her last husband Bob bought land and obtained planning permission to build a Lentssons wooden home near Sax.The house never arrived.

Finally, they were forced to sell up and returned to Javea “broke”. Diana estimates the venture – including court fees regarding the non-delivery of the home – “cheated” them of 250,000€.

Denia Hospital under attack from furious relative

by Jan Gamm A FURIOUS Marina Alta resident has started legal proceedings against Denia Hospital following the alleged mishandling of emergency treatment on her son.

Rosario Gomez, 72, claims that her 40-yearold son Manuel, following a collapse on 19th October, should have been given specific tests for a carotid aneurysm on the request of his medical examiner. However, the hospital failed to carry them out, opting instead to perform a simple x-ray before discharging him with ‘hypertension’.

Dissatisfied with the hospital’s diagnosis, Rosario took her son to the Clinical Hospital of Valencia where the proper tests were carried out and appropriate treatment prescribed.

Rosario said her decision to question the hospital’s diagnosis of her son was triggered by the memory of her late husband Joe’s treatment at the same hospital some years earlier.

Joe was suffering with Meningitis yet he was

allegedly sent home by doctors at Denia Hospital who diagnosed ‘Acute Sinusitis’: Joe died six days later.

Rosario is determined to denounce Denia Hospital and challenges the Minister of Health for the Valencian Regional Government, Manuel Llombart, to make a public explanation regarding the number of fatalities at the hospital that she claims are swept under the carpet.

“I know I am facing a giant,” said Rosario, “Even so I am going to go to the top to prove that my husband Joe would be alive today if Dénia hospital had made a successful diagnosis instead of sending him home to die with Meningitis.

“It is a kick in the stomach for the families of these patients that Llombart defends this hospital,” said Rosario. “Let him tell me how many medical errors have been committed there and tell me if the ratio of mortality is normal!”

Rosario’s case has been brought to the attention of the Regional Ombudsman.

Trailer driver loses it at Gata turn

THE NOTORIOUS long curve at the 185km section of the N332 between Gata de Gorgos and Benissa took a trailer driver by surprise on Wednesday morning. He lost control of his vehicle which overturned, hanging over the embankment and spilling its load of plastic boxes into a vine field. The driver suffered minor head injuries and was transferred to Denia Hospital. The road was subject to restrictions for 11 hours.

Remembrance Sunday in Benidorm THE ROYAL British Legion Benidorm branch held a poignant Act of Remembrance at Cuidad Patricia last Sunday – Remembrance Sunday.

The honour of Standard Bearer went to 92-year-old Roy Downing, the branches’ oldest member who retired from the forces in 1987.

The two- minute silence, observed after the Last Post was played, coincided with that held at the Cenotaph in London, officiated by John Derrick, Chairman of the Benidorm branch.

by Jan Gamm A group of ten ladies shared an ‘intercultural’ breakfast on Monday as they discussed their backgrounds and the possibility of changing their lives for the better.

Moroccan Suoadad, who came to Spain eight years ago, would love to work with children in day-care but has found it difficult to get a start.

Other ladies at the table from Cuba,

Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and Bulgaria agreed that without training, most women coming to Spain to seek a better life are consigned to working as housemaids or caring for the elderly.

DIFFICULT And many who attended college and are qualified in their own countries find it difficult to secure employment in Spain – especially if they do

not speak the language.

Mary from Uruguay studied law back home but ran away with her two children to escape from her ex-husband: “I like writing and would love to devote my time to that,” she said.

The programme provides information on how to enrol for Spanish classes, computer science courses and above all the promotion of selfesteem and already there are dozens of enquiries for future enrolment.

THE DIABETES Association in Valencia has expressed deep concern that 700,000 Diabetics in the region are not being given adequate care and attention, nor are they properly informed on how to manage their Diabetes.

After 31st December prescriptions for test strips for the measuring of blood glucose will no longer be available and many Diabetics have no idea where to purchase them. Many have already been sourcing their testing apparatus online for some time. The Valencia Diabetes Association has called for a review of the situation, pointing out that any savings inspired by the withdrawal of Diabetic supplies will become instead a major expense when serious medical complications arise from the absence of proper checks and controls.

Janette and Ken Filligham paid a total of 81,000€ in 2007 in advance at Jane Lentz’s insistence for a place on the resort and a wooden home – again the house never arrived.

“I cannot believe the statement the Lentz’s have made,” said Janette. “Everything they claim is totally untrue in our case. We were at the resort the day before Jane Lentz left for Finland and she assured us everything was in the hands of (sons) Mark and Richard.”

FOBBED OFF The demanded to know when their home would be built and were told “we are not really sure but it will be soon”. On other occasions they were simply fobbed off with excuses.

Valencia’s oldest shops THE CITY Council of Valencia has published a historic shopping guide featuring 45 businesses that have been trading in the city for more than 50 years. Valencia has always been the northern Costa Blanca’s shopping Mecca and the city wishes to acknowledge the contribution of its oldest and longest serving establishments. The list includes a broad spectrum of goods and services such as milliners; bodegas; confectioners; fashion boutiques; bookstores; jewellers and gift shops. As well as distributing information on these shopping delights a souvenir book is to be published next year tipped to be a tourists’ ‘must have’.

“I am very disappointed nothing has been done on the legal front. It would appear the Lentz’s have got away with what they have done to so many people.”

Frank and Mavis Goodhall now rent a property in Pego. In 2010 they came to RTN with the story of how they had become victims of Lentssons twice over.

Firstly a wooden house they ordered to be delivered to land they had bought never arrived and in a bid to find a solution, they accepted a home on the La Xara resort, only to be first locked out by the land owner - and finally watching their house be seized in a court action by a German victim despite their ownership of the 61,000€ property.

“This statement by the Lentz’s makes me very cross,” said Mavis. “Yes they left their sons there to carry on and they did their best but they were left without money.

“We feel so sorry for everyone caught up in this. The Lentz’s left and everything was up in the air. I cannot bear to drive by the site, it makes my stomach turn. We trusted her and it makes you feel so gullible.”

Heart operation success

by Jack Troughton HOSPITAL CLINICA Benidorm has successfully performed an operation to implant an artificial heart valve in a 78-year-old man unable to undergo conventional surgery because of the risks involved.

It has become the first private health clinic in Valencia to perform a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) in a procedure carried out by a multidisciplinary team led

by Dr Juan Ruiz Nodar, the hospital’s head of hemodynamics.

The TAVI technique takes place under general anaesthetic and positions the valve in the heart via the femoral artery – and hugely improves a patient’s quality of life.

It is a recommended technique for patients who are no longer candidates for more conventional intervention because of the high risk involved or other diseases preventing cardiac surgery.

The patient suffered severe aortic stenosis causing heart failure. He had already under-

gone four bypass operations 11 years ago after being diagnosed with a heavily calcified aorta.

OPTION It was decided open surgery was not possible and the TAVI technique was the only option.

Dr Ruiz Nodar said the use of a percutaneous valve had opened new fields in the treatment of cardiac disease and gave an “effective solution” to patients where surgery was ruled out.

The patient was discharged four days after the operation with obvious clinical improvements and Dr Ruiz Nodar said the TAVI technique significantly improved symptoms and “resulted in an improvement of their prognosis and a huge improvement in their quality of life.”

A minimally invasive technique, TAVI is only permitted at centres meeting requirements set by the European Society of Cardiology – standards met by the Benidorm hospital.

Remembrance Sunday in Javea POPPIES AND medals were worn with pride in Javea on Sunday as the Fisherman’s Church was filled with people commemorating Remembrance Sunday.

Father Marcus Roncetti conducted his second annual service to honour servicemen and women who gave their lives for their country.

Roger Dawes, Chairman of the Javea Branch, said: “Father Marcus did us proud and the Lady Elizabeth School choir was magnificent.”

And despite the ongoing recession, the collection taken at the afternoon service raised 853€ for the 2013 Poppy Appeal, an increase on 12 months

ago. Roger added: “The money is very gratefully received.”

Nobody’s buying!

HIGH TEMPERATURES throughout October and the early part of November combined with the pressures of the economic crisis are causing fashion retailers to suffer one of the worst seasons in years as the prolonged Spanish summer continues to trail on and on…

by Jan Gamm RACKS OF leather and wool coats remain untouched; stacks of winter woollies are piled high; those dark greys, browns and autumn tones are sticking on the shelves. Traders are desperately digging out their summer stock including shoes, handbags and evening wear in an attempt to rescue appalling sales figures over the past few weeks which should have seen a boom in winter wear.

SKIP THE WINTER And of course as the warm winter months wear on, the possibility of selling customers a winter wardrobe diminishes as thrifty buyers consider skipping the winter fashion scene altogether and making do with last year’s coats, sweaters and jackets.

As the Costa Blanca basks in the prolonged golden summer sunshine, the only thing that is frozen is the sale of tights!

Trini Martinez Palllarés, the owner of a fashion store in the centre of Elche, said with resignation: “I just do not know how we’ll survive this season – it’s a disaster!”

With no sales on outerwear most retailers will have difficulty meeting their suppliers’ payments. “We have no choice but to resort to promotions offering clothes at a 20% discount,” said Trini, “…the problem is compounded as the days pass and we get closer Christmas. By this stage of the season most customers hold off and wait for the sales.”

BOOTS In shoe stores an expensive range of boots stubbornly refuses to budge as customers admire, try on and then put them back on the shelf. Hardly surprising as these shoppers are still wearing sandals!

The president of the Retailers Association of Alicante, Vicente Armengol, is lamenting the poor sales in the textile sector caused by the unseasonal temperatures: “We needed the winter weather to encourage sales of warmer fashions. The heat is killing us!”

After a bumper summer fashion trade retailers all over the Costa Blanca tighten their designer belts and hope for a cold snap – real soon!

Miss Spain runner up Miss Universe MISS VENEZUELA, 25-year-old Gabriela Isler, was crowned Miss Universe 2013 by her predecessor, USA’s Olivia Culp, on Saturday in Moscow. The hasty coronation was somewhat clumsy and resulted in the Miss Universe tiara falling off Miss Isler’s head but no lasting damage occurred! Runner-up was Miss Spain, Patricia Yurena Rodriguez.

The Giant Stone Race

British Fancy Dress Day WELL THEY certainly didn’t disappoint as yet again the Brits turned out in their thousands for the annual British Fancy Dress Day yesterday. Centred around the British Square and along Calle Gerona, the entire area was jam packed with revellers, who even spilled out onto the streets.

Fortunately, learning from previous experience, the police had closed the main part of Calle Gerona to traffic allowing the party goers to really let their hair down. The diversity of costumes was a sight indeed – a riot of colour with a wide range of themes and characters.

It must be said that the Brits without doubt know how to party as many were still up until the early hours of the morning!

The winners in the Mens’ category

by Jan Gamm THE FIFTH edition of the Giant Stone mountain race through the mountains of Sega, took place on Sunday 10th November with an impressive 291 runners and 465 walkers taking part in this spectacular event organised by Athletics Club Ondara with the collaboration of Ondara’s Sports Department.

BEAUTY Perfect weather afforded breath-taking views of an area of outstanding natural beauty for the participants as

they tackled the course of 16.5 miles for runners and 14 miles for walkers at an altitude of 943 metres.

First over the line was Josemi Mulet Pons followed by Ruben Giner Fornes and Bernard Gil. The first lady to cross the finish line was Elisa Garcia Córcoles; 2nd was Maria Joseph Maso Puig and third, Elia Dura Fraud: all of the 291 runners finished the race.

The first walker to finish the course was Vicente Sanchis Beltramo; 2nd was Ribes Antonio Berenguer with Juan Pons third. Prizes were presented by the Councillor for Fiestas for Ondara,

Natalia Matthew.

Giant Stone was organised by the Athletics Club and the City of Ondara in collaboration with Civil Defence, Police and the local councils of Benimeli, Beniarbeig and Orchard. The trial was sponsored by Tururac and its associates.

A spokesman for the Sports Council of Ondara thanked the participants for their enthusiastic attendance and congratulated the Athletics Club for its wonderful organisation of an event that is becoming increasingly popular.

Daniel Gil had done when he was bailed a few days earlier, trying to hide his face from the cameras with a document folder, he strode from the Soto del Real prison to a waiting car without making comment. Under the terms of his bail López Abad cannot leave Spain and must report to a courthouse or police station every two weeks.

Warm clothing needed at last A NORTHERN Europe air mass has brought the first days of cool weather this year with temperatures dropping by the weekend to 5º - 9º. Only the most intrepid beachgoers are braving the sea and all those winter warmers are finally being dug out of the wardrobe.

Rain is expected in northern and southern Costa Blanca at the end of the week, seeing an end to the long, long hot summer!

Deadly handbags confiscated

A COLLECTION of fashionable but deadly handbags on sale in Valencia has been confiscated by police as the clasps have been fashioned into a scary variety of knuckledusters! The clasps feature skulls, leopards and lethal spikes in either gold or silver set with diamante: the purse is held with the user’s fingers slipped through the top clasp. One customer who bought one of the bags to attend a wedding was questioned by security at Barajas Airport before being handed over to the Guardia Civil.

A change of name OVER THE past few years there has been a considerable increase in large Chinese stores popping up. About two weeks ago we were out for a walk and noticed a ‘Going out of business’ sign on a large Chinese shop.

THE SIGN said ‘30% off,’ so, liking a bargain, we went in. But to our shock, the small print on the supposed 30% discount only applied if the customer spent 50€ or more, which prompted us to turn around and leave.

The ‘30% off’ was a rip off!

We have heard that these large Chinese stores don’t pay taxes for up to five years in Spain, and once the five years is completed they pretend to go out of business and start again using a different name.

We know a Spanish shop owner who sells the same sort of products and he is slowly being squeezed out of business by the five Chinese stores within a short walking distance from his store. We spoke with him

Fireworks for girls

ACCORDING TO Watts in Britain you cannot buy bangers (fireworks not sausages) or ‘jumping jacks’ in the UK. Just how crazy is that? Vesuvius Fountains, Golden Rain and Roman Candles are soppy - fireworks for girls.

We boys loved our penny bangers nearly as much as the tuppeny ones which were bigger and louder and more fun. These ridiculous ‘politically correct’ lawmakers should come over to Valencia in Fallas and watch how dads teach their kids how to throw fireworks.

None of your ‘light blue touch paper and retire immediately’ –light the fuse, count to three and chuck it!

Generations of firework-throwers have been taught this art by fathers and grandfathers.

These political do-gooding busy-bodies might as well abolish bonfire night altogether (apology to terrorism perhaps if they need an excuse) if they’re going to take all the fun out of it.

A while ago I recall reading that the increase of Chinese stores being allowed into Spain was to help the economy during the crisis. Since these shops do not pay taxes and seem to employ mostly Chinese young people, it looks as if the only economy they are helping is the Chinese economy!

DO NOT even think about driving your own vehicle into Elche! Your car could be towed away even though you parked on an official and free parking lot! Justification for this by the Policia Local in this ‘hospitable’ city: “Your car was standing in the way.” Cost: 95€!

An upside down world Caring people

I READ an article entitled ‘Neighbours barbed wire booby trap’ where a property owner is criticised for how she protects her property from children and cats. What an upside down world.

The one in the right is called wrong. The ones in the wrong are called right.

The writer quotes people who said the property owner was wrong for how she protects her property. Excuse me? The parents are wrong for allowing their children to throw balls on another person’s property and possibly break a window, then trespass on another person’s property without permission. The parents are wrong for not teaching their children right from wrong yet they blame the person for protecting her own property. What upside down reasoning. But how can some parents teach their kids right from wrong when they do not even know the difference themselves?

At least the Guardia Civil had the common

sense to know the property owner had the right to look after her own property as she saw fit and the nosy neighbours made no sense.

The complaining neighbours also mentioned a cat getting injured after going onto another person’s property: it was injured and it cost 60€ in vet’s fees. Why did the cat owner not have a litter box in their own property for the cat to go to the bathroom, instead of letting it go to the bathroom on someone else’s property? Letting their cat soil someone else’s property is wrong.

I love cats and would not want to see a cat injured. But if the owner had kept their cat from wandering onto someone else’s property the cat would never had been injured. The person who is responsible for the cat is its owner. People seem to always want to blame someone else rather than admit they are wrong. What an upside down world.

Tea for two, sir?

OH GREAT! Do you not think that when the fates conspire against you, they really, really do?

Even for us Frank Spencer-a-likes. Okay here’s my fate conspiracy top three: the boiler has decided to pack up; that traffic ticket from the summer has come back to bite me in the bum and the bonnet on the car won’t go down.

It’s that, oft talked about terrible triumvirate, innit?

What’s to be done? Well, pay up and look big – and then go for a bracing walk in the woods. Yup, that always makes it better. So off I went with my friend and her two young granddaughters into the wilds of Hopwas woods (near Lichfield in Staffs) and we had a great time sploshing in the mud, hugging trees, photographing wild flora and fauna and watching soldiers from the nearby Whittington Barracks doing camouflage manoeuvres. In the distance we could see the pigs at Packington, running and squealing with carefree delight, no doubt hoping for a repeat of the Tamworth Two incident.

The sun shone, we let off steam and after some time sauntered back to the car – with appetites the size of small horses. “There’s a farm shop nearby, who’s for bacon sar-

nies?” I ask. The girls say they’ll opt for cake instead and so off we set. The sign on the road announces: Packington Moor Farmshop, next left after Botany Bay. “Oh!” I joke, “Let’s hope there are no convicts around…” I then have to qualify said statement by explaining that there once was a far more famous Botany Bay in Australia where convicts were routinely dispatched to. Little Ella asks, “But there won’t be robbers today, will there?” No, of course not.

Hmmm little did I know… Anyway we pulled to the delightful looking PMF all hopeful and hungry.

Now, let this WIB serve as a sort of Trip-Advisor to anyone planning to visit Packington Moor Farmshop.

Don’t go without a fully charged wallet or a spare credit card. I don’t want to come across as mean but I nearly hyperventilated at the cash point. For two bacon sarnies, two coffees, two fruit juices, a piece of lemon drizzle cake and a gingerbread Land Rover, how much would you say? Twelve and a half quid, maybe fifteen quid?

Well, hold on to that table, it was twenty-two pounds

and something pence. I kid you not, dear reader.

Okay, one could argue that this was the world famous Packington bacon presented in these sarnies. One could argue that. One could also reckon on it being a little more that two slices of ordinary bread with a bit of bacon chucked in (@ £5.45 each) because that’s all it was. None of your M&S garnish and presentation – not even a scanky bit of lettuce, just two bog-standard Joe’s Café type sarnies.

Humph! But, you know something? The place was packed.

Yeah, they were packing em in at Packington; so much so, we had to brave the cold afternoon air and eat al fresco.

Still, the little girls enjoyed it so I guess I should shut up with the moaning. I just thought you might like to be pre-warned; just on the off chance that you should be in the Lichfield area sometime soon.

Ella needn’t have worried because there were no robbers, although I did feel somewhat fleeced… Or should that be porked!

by Keith Nicol One of the newest gatherings took place at the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras in the diocese of Pilar de la Horadada, saw almost 350 people attending, to remember fallen military, comrades, family and friends at the sixth ceremony held there.

The event has now grown to be one of the largest in the region with Sunday’s ceremony led by Pipe Major Barry Waddington and the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. Such is the high standing of Mil Palmeras that the Service was attended by many representatives of the three main towns covered by the Branch, including the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, José Fidel Ros, and representatives of Orihuela Council, Paul Rodwell, the British Consul from Alicante and the Chairman of District North, Chris Wyatt.

The Rev Terry Baxter, was officiating at his first Orihuela Costa service while, 16 year old Rebecca Holt attracted tumultuous applause following her magnificent solo performance of the Les Miserables classic ‘Bring him home’, Piper Alex Hunter played the ‘Lament to the fallen’, the Last Post was played by Derek Hayes, while music accompanying the hymns was provided by the Phoenix Band under the Directorship of Julie Schofield.

British Consul Paul Rodwell said “I felt privileged to lay a poppy garland on behalf of the British Government,” and Keith Carter, chairman of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion, said; “The event was a great success with lots of residents coming

out to show their support. It has been a truly glorious day.”

The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion was formed in January 2008, and yesterday in Mil Palmeras it celebrated the 6th, and to date most successful, Remembrance Sunday in it’s relatively short history.

The other major event took place on Monday, November 11th, which was attended by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Deputy Provincial Councillor for Tourism plus Finance in the Municipality, Joaquín Albaladejo, Councillor for Foreigners, Rosario Martinez , Councillor for Culture Luis María Pizana, the Security councillor, Eduardo Gil Rebollo and the Director of the Foreign Residents Office ( OARI ), Graham Knight.

The service took place at the La Siesta Evangelical Church along with more than three hundred residents of the English community of Torrevieja and surrounding area. The memorial service for this important event was officiated by the Pastor of the Anglican Church in Torrevieja , Christopher Scargill.

Eduardo Dolon also spoke during the service and highlighted that this ceremony has enormous importance for the British community based in Torrevieja , which he praised as “an example of integration into the city.” He noted that today there are more than thirteen thousand British citizens in Torrevieja, with about 50 associations of British origin, with the vast majority of these being charitable and social. Other local services were held around the region, all of them showing signs of bigger support in 2013 over previous years.

British blokes clean up A STUDY of more than 58,000 people living in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain by Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona has revealed that British men are far more likely to help with household tasks than other Europeans, tackling a third of the chores whilst Spanish men contribute a miserable fifth of the housework alongside the Italians - and the French and Germans ran second. Interestingly, men co-habiting with their partners are more likely to lend a hand than married men. And sorry girls, women are still putting in the lion’s share of work at home whether or not they are holding down full time jobs.

Lady of the dance new inspiration, anything that grabs me really

by Jack Troughton COSTA BLANCA artist Jenny Morrison continues to be fascinated by the movement, colour and traditions of dance and her passion is captured on canvas.

Her Tormos home and studio are filled with pictures of ballet, flamenco and tango – and painting them actually prompted her to take up dance classes.

And Jenny’s latest work features girls dancing with horses. “It is my latest phase; I love horses and the movement of them together with a dancer.

“I have painted a run of flamenco, tango and ballerinas and now its girls dancing with horses.”

Jenny paints from photographs she takes or works ‘live’ when she is out and about painting landscapes.

“I am constantly, constantly, on the lookout for new inspiration, anything that grabs me really,” she said.

CHILD A talented artist as a child she said she “stuck to” sport and academic subjects at school and went into the theatre but left to start a family and later went into business in Central London.

After selling up, Jenny became a “roadie” for daughter Izzy, the very-modern classical Soprano whose recording career was taking off around the world and who delighted audiences on the Costa Blanca when she lived in Spain.

“I roadied for Izzy and made a couple of long trips to the Far East after her manager asked me – I was very lucky, I

didn’t have to work so I had the opportunity to travel with Izzy, we are very close.”

However, in 2004 Jenny decided she wanted to “get my teeth into something new”. She said she gave it some thought and decided she wanted to paint.

Jenny said: “At first I thought I was too old and would need teaching, you do need training. I got over all that and went for it!”

At the time living in Kensington, she attended the Heatherley School of Fine art in Chelsea and was “amazed” nine of her first year pictures were included in an in-house exhibition.

RESTAURANT And enjoying a restaurant dinner with husband, the owner asked to see some of Jenny’s work and was invited to show pictures on the premises.

“I said I hadn’t thought of selling because I had another year at college – I asked the school principal and she said I should go ahead because the pictures were worth money and I should go for it.”

It was the beginning of Jenny’s new career as a professional artist and she continued to brush up her skills on overseas courses, as well as combining popping across the water to Canada to see her two grandchildren with attending a Toronto college to practice draughtsmanship.

Although Jenny and Willi did not make a permanent move to Spain until last year, they were frequent visitors. She met artist Keith Geddes and showed some of her work on his

website and Julia Evans of the Arthouse, now based in Benidoleig, spotted the pictures and showed them in the gallery’s first exhibition.

“Julia is a fabulous teacher and has continued to teach me – even though I am a professional and sell my work, my attitude is for any form of art, I always want a teacher,” said Jenny.

“It is like Izzy always needs a singing coach. Julia pushes my boundaries and gets me out of the box.”

TALENTED COSTA Blanca schoolboy Oliver Denty is enjoying life in the top tier of Spanish football for his age – successfully juggling sport with his studies.

by Jack Troughton The 14-year-old from Javea plays for Kelme CF in the Valencia Autonomica League and with team mates has just enjoyed a successful tournament featuring teams from Real Madrid and Barcelona and other ‘La Liga’ top flight clubs.

Elche-based academy Kelme has produced numerous professionals – including Atletico Madrid’s Juan Fran and Spanish U21 captain Tiago, currently with Bayern Munich.

And the Autonomica includes the ‘A’ teams of a number of famous clubs, such as Valencia, Villareal, Levante and Hercules. Graduates who have gone on to become some of the game’s top footballers include: Juan Mata, Chelsea and Spain; David Silva, Manchester City and Spain; David Villa, Atletico Madrid and Spain; and Roberto Soldado, Tottenham and Spain.

Oliver, who attends the Laude Lady Elizabeth School, previously played at CD Javea

for four years and was captain of the ‘Aveline’ U12 side before playing in the ‘Infantile’ U14 A side in his last season at the club at the age of 12.

The tournament saw Kelme draw 0-0 with Real Madrid in the first game – missing a couple of chances to edge the contest – in front of a noisy and enthusiastic crowd. Oliver enjoyed a great game against two fast forwards and won key tackles and headers.

Kelme won the group, edging Real Madrid into second place, only conceding one goal.

In the knockout stages they were beaten by a last minute goal by Levante.

FORGE However, Real Madrid forged ahead to score three against Valencia and win the final by putting three goals past Villareal – who knocked out Barcelona in the semi-final.

One of the Kelme parents said: “Real Madrid scored against and beat every team they played against except us. Real may have won

the competition but they couldn’t win our group or beat us.”

Two years ago Oliver was approached by several Autonomica league clubs and scouts from three English Premiership sides. However, he chose a trial at Kelme and took the place of a player joining Barcelona.

Proud Dad Terry said: “The main reason he chose Kelme was that it enabled him to live at home in Spain and continue his education at LES, which he has attended for the last 10 years.

“Oli’s commitment is incredible; training

straight from school three nights a week in Elche and not getting home until after 11pm.

He leaves home in Javea early on Saturday mornings to play all over southern Spain.

“And he does this exhausting schedule while keeping up with school work – demonstrating his maturity, discipline and dedication to his studies.”

Oliver now faces the twin challenge of starting GCSE courses while on the field Kelme have decided to step up and play his team against U16 sides.

Organised by the Javea-based Freemasons Lodges of Deportiva No 83 and Javea No 40 and hosted by Darrell and Sally Clayton at their home in Gata de Gorgos, 150 people paid 15€ each for the hottest ticket in town

– and another 58 were on a waiting list.

And the charity celebration raised 1,966€.

Half the cash will go the Red Cross and the remainder divided equally between the Franciscan Refuge in Gandia and Caritas in Javea.

The ticket price included a menu of Houses of Parliament Soup, sausages and burgers, jacket potatoes, and gingerbread and cakes, drinks and entertainment by party band Strikland, a disco, and fireworks.

The Louise Clarke Creative Writing Contest THERE IS still time, although not too much, to take part in RTN’s ‘Louise Clarke Creative Writing Contest’.

by Keith Nicol OVER THE past six weeks, the entries in all categories have been building up and are ready for our judges to review. The idea for the contest came from San Miguel resident Karen Moon McDonald, just one of the many people who Louise had a close connection with in the village, who is also one of the judging panel as are Louise’s son Charlie and daughter Lily, who will give their input into the junior sections.

There are three categories: up to 12 years, 12-18 years and over 18 years. This year’s topic is to write a ‘Fictional adventure story’ with the only parameters being that your entry must be in English, sent by email as a ‘Word Doc’ within the word count, and the adventure must take place in Spain.

You pick the adventure. Just pick it quickly and send it in.

Regarding the ‘Word count’: up to 12 years- 250 max, other two categories 450 max words. It’s just an adventure story so no illustrations or poetry please.

First prize for each category is to have their story printed in the RTN with an illustration by our resident cartoonist Carter McKeague. The cartoon and printed page will be framed for the winners. Second and third prize-winners receive book vouchers of 50€ for second place and 30€ for third place spon-

Junior Cricket in Torrevieja THERE WILL be a junior cricket tournament at Torrevieja Cricket Club this coming Saturday, November 16th. Teams from La Manga, Alfas and Torrevieja are taking part.

Each match will be 10-overs with, time permitting, a mixed match involving senior players who are helping on the day. The first match is at 10.00am at the Torrevieja sports stadium athletics track. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

ArtHouse Gallery anniversary

by Jack Troughton CELEBRATING ITS fifth birthday, The ArtHouse Gallery marks the milestone with an exhibition of paintings by its own artists.

A wide and “bold” range of oil paintings will be on show on the walls of the Benidoleig gallery in a variety of styles and the pictures cover a wide range of subjects from figurative to traditional landscapes and modern abstracts, The exhibition kicks off with an open day on Saturday 23rd November between 10.30am and 6pm – refreshments will be served throughout and demonstrations will show artists in action - and continues until Monday 23rd December.

ArtHouse has become a haven of creativity on the Costa Blanca and the building is a busy working gal-

lery and studio and there are currently over 100 students enrolled – including professional artists and students who had never picked up a paint brush before starting classes.

Artist and gallery owner Julia Evans’s philosophy is everyone can paint and enjoy the benefits of a little ArtHouse in their lives. The ethos behind her teaching is everyone can paint and enjoy the techniques she has developed to create art.

Julia believes her philosophy of exploring the emotional and technical sides of a picture can be applied to painters at all levels – developing the skills of professionals and amateurs.

As a working gallery there will always be artists at work during the month long exhibition. Opening hours are Monday to Friday between 10.30am and 1.30pm, and 2.30pm and 5.30pm.

And the charity’s Christmas Dinner Dance is being held on Saturday 7th December at 7.30pm for 8pm, with a three course meal and the opportunity

to dance the night away to Barry ‘the Swingman’ Peters.

HELP of Denia and Marina Alta

HELP OF Denia and Marina Alta held their popular Antiques Road Show at the Riu Rau in Jesus Pobre on Sunday 3rd November. This year the Antiques Road Show combined with the Sunday Farmers Market and the Antique Fair normally held in the Riu Rau. The combination attracted more than 2,000 visitors and Jesus Pobre was almost gridlocked! HELP had a continuous stream of hopeful millionaires awaiting valuation of precious items by the antique experts, recruited by the Javea Art School.

Many had come hoping their antiques were very valuable but at the end of the day they had to come to terms that this was not the case. Nevertheless, several items were valued at over 500€ and the rest were satisfied that they had been dealing with knowledgeable valuers. Local restaurants also played their part with special menus and delicious tapas. None of this would have been achieved without HELP’s volunteers and of course Lorely Griffiths of Javea School of Art and her team of experts; their combined contribution to the success of the day was very much appreciated.

Still be careful with garden fires - Part one by

ALTHOUGH MOST Towns and villages now have safe systems for disposing of garden waste, especially easily burnable waste, it’s amazing how many bonfires one sees polluting the clear early morning air or even at neighbours’ barbecue times. And it is not only the smoke that is unhealthy but also chemical pollution if plastic bags sheeting and plant pots are put on the fire.

Take the following actions to minimise the chance of a serious fire in your neighbourhood.

Compost as much garden waste as possible, first shredding it if necessary, especially during the major winter cutback in the new year.

Bag up non composting material and take to the local green waste bins or leave outside the gate for the weekly collection as happens in our village.

If you intend to still burn do obtain a fire licence first from your town hall and burn in a controlled incinerator in a clear space in the middle of the garden. It is amazing how

many hedges get set on fire – particularly cypresses hedges.

Plant low fire risk hedges like Oleander or Gandula. In country areas cacti hedges are still seen. The moisture in these is in fact a fire inhibitor.

Stay with the bonfire, especially if the wind could get up.

Dying bonfires can soon roar up from gusts of wind and light weight ashes lifted and blown many yards.

Don’t have a fire on windy days.

Don’t have a fire under fir trees.

Don’t have fires during the June to October banned period.

If you have pine trees, especially along the boundary of your property trim off all the lower dry branches and clear away any fire risk undergrowth or layer of dry twigs.

If you are surrounded by un-cleared fire risk copses of fir trees on private or public property ask the town hall to contact the owners or clear the land themselves.

A change of a dress THE NEW dress agency ‘Change of A Dress’ will be opening its doors on Monday 2nd December. The agency will work hand in hand with the Giving4giving charity which supports many local cancer charities and all commission earned by the agency will be donated to various causes.

VOLUNTEERS OF the Charity Shop of Calpe were delighted to receive a special ‘Merit Award’ from the Town Hall for their services to the community.

by Jack Troughton Founded in 2002 by a group of British residents, the aim was to raise funds to support other local charities and organisations in the coastal resort.

And over the last 11 years, the shop has continually expanded thanks to the efforts of a team giving its time for the cause.

Currently there are 29 volunteers working in the shop in Galerias Mar Azul in Avenida Gabriel Miro – the shop opens Monday to Saturday between 10am and 1pm.

Its ongoing success in raising funds is thanks to the volunteers but also people who donate stock – clothes, shoes, books, and bric-a-brac to sell – and its loyal customers who are of all nationalities.

BENEFIT A six-strong committee leads the team and decides where funds will be spent. The Maite Boronet Occupational Centre, the Red cross, College Olta, the special educational school Gargasindi, and the town’s EMAUS home have all benefitted from 160,000€ of donations

Since its launch, the council run Calpe Food Bank has also been supported with more than 15,000€ - helping families hit hard by the current economic recession.

Shop President John Bridge said: “We are delighted to receive this award in recognition of our work. Our volunteers work hard to create a pleasant atmosphere at the shop and are proud to sup-

port the town of Calpe.

“I hope the shop will continue to thrive for many years to come and allow us to continue to support these every good causes.”

The Charity Shop of Calpe is staging its Christmas ‘Event’ on Thursday 21st November between 4pm and 6pm.

There will be a chance to browse the shelves and some festive stalls – including a tombola – while enjoying a celebratory glass of Bucks Fizz.

Pensions could scrap widows’ rights and index-linked increases FIRST THE governments attack savings by either taking money from individuals accounts or offering such low rates of interest that you are actually losing money by placing it in a savings account with the banks and building societies.

Now they are turning their attention to pensions.

Their latest idea is to change the way final salary (defined benefit pensions) are run. They are proposing to scrap widows’ and widowers’ rights to any pension payouts as well as getting rid of indexation, under which payouts rise in line with inflation.

At the moment if you have a pension and die usually 50% of your income is paid to your spouse until they die: this will no longer be the case if the rules are changed - the spouse will get nothing. How can this be fair? If a husband or wife work all their life and their partner stays at home either to bring up the family or through ill health cannot work, what are they expected to retire on, and live on in old age? They usually haven’t paid enough contributions to get a

full state pension and if they get no income from their spouses’ pension what will happen to them?

In addition to this the plans could force employees to wait longer before they can retire on a full pension as well as see their payments frozen and left at the mercy of inflation. There will be no index linked annual rise.

The proposals do not affect public sector workers or those in the private sector with ‘defined contribution’ pensions yet but is just a matter of time before these come under scrutiny as well.

SURVEY OF the property in Cadastre and Land Registry.

Could you extend the property you want to buy?

WE HAVE been looking for a property in the area of Denia (Alicante) and found one we like in a wonderful location. However, as the building is rather old, we will need to renovate and extend it after the purchase. How can we be sure that we will not have any problem with this?

First, you should check that the property you wish to buy is legally registered at the Cadastre and the Local Land Registry and that the registered square meters match the reality.

The Cadastre: is the administrative register which specifies the location, square meters and, by means of the corresponding plan, all elements composing the said property (house, pool, etc). The Cadastre also determines the value of the property for tax purposes, such as the local rate: IBI (council tax). This registration does not recognise the ownership of the Property, as

this is done by the Land Registry.

The Land Registry: collects all data regarding the description of the plot and existing buildings.

Additionally, it provides information about the owner(s) and any charge or encumbrance on the property, e.g. mortgage. Also it informs about any other limitation on the ownership or right of use regarding the property.

If above-named descriptions are correct, match with the real situation of the property and do not need to be amended, you will have to make sure, that you will be allowed to extend your house in the future. To that end, we recommend you take the following steps: To determine if you will be allowed to extend, and how much, first you will have to check the real size of the plot and the buildings and, in addition to this, the urban regulations of the Town Hall where your property is located.

Among other things, you will have to verify if the potential development of the plot (maximum authorized size of the building which depends normally on the size of the plot) has reached its limit, if the distance from the existing building to the boundaries of the plot allows an extension of the construction, etc.

If your final decision whether or not to purchase depends on being able to renovate/extend the property in the future, then ensure this precondition from the beginning by including it on the purchase contract.

Making the most of your money I AM in the process of selling my house in Spain and sending the money back to the UK in exchange for Sterling. Firstly, what is the best way to achieve the most Sterling for my money and secondly, is there any way I can ascertain exactly how much sterling I will have available even though completion is 6 weeks away?

This question is interesting because when using a Spanish bank to exchange Euros to Sterling it is not only the rate but also the fees that have to be considered. Typically, charges can be up to 1% for simply depositing the draft from the notary and transferring the Euros out. Add to this the rate of exchange and you really could be losing out.

Using a currency company such as Moneycorp is a way to ensure that you are receiving the most competitive exchange rate. However, we can also save clients money on the bank fees too, definitely ensuring more Sterling arrives into your UK bank account. As an example, the additional Sterling generated on a property sale price of 200,000€ could be as much as £4,500 by using Moneycorp instead of your Spanish bank.

For the second part of your question there is of course no way of predicting at what level the £/€

rate will be in 6 weeks’ time. However, relating back to a recent question on the timing of transfers, you do have an option that can help. Once your property is sold and the 10% deposit secured you are able fix the exchange rate for delivery of the Sterling at a later date (to coincide with your completion).

Forward contracts protect against adverse currency movements and can be used to lock into favourable exchange rates.

This will also mean that you will know to the exact penny the Sterling amount you will receive after completion. The process is simple and requires only a small deposit as the balance is payable once you have the proceeds of the sale.

YOU KNOW that minute when you first realise that your wallet or purse is missing… the shock that runs through you to be replaced by a vague hope that you didn’t bring it with you in the first place.

In that second of realisation you’ve already flashed up how much cash was in it, which cards and how many telephone calls you have to make. If it was your bag that’s gone and phone along with it, there’s another list of implications for you to work through.

You often hear people saying, it’s not the cash they’ve taken that’s the problem. Many of us don’t carry much cash with us and it’s the implications that we most dread: the nuisance of contacting card companies and getting new cards issued and all to the benefit of no one. You can even catch yourself thinking, ‘I’d rather have just given them the cash.’

Having a bank account embargoed can have a similarly knock-on nuisance effect. It’s not so much

that you can’t get your hands on your money (although that’s pretty annoying too) as the fact that no one else can either. The electricity and water boards don’t hang around here - if your bills aren’t paid, you won’t be receiving your service for long after the event. Don’t expect clemency.

WHY WOULD ANYONE FREEZE MY BANK ACCOUNT? In case you are blissfully unaware, the Spanish Tax Authority are able to put an ‘embargo’ on your bank account if you owe them money. In some cases, people are not even aware that they are in arrears at all until they get the news that their bank account is frozen.

There are many reasons why the Tax Authority might feel that they are justified in taking this action.

Perhaps one of the most frequently encountered is the recovery of non-resident taxes. It can come as quite a blow to a non-resident who has come out for

a relaxing two weeks in the sun to discover that their bank account is frozen, their electricity cut off and the tax man is on their trail.

Non-resident imputed income tax is payable by all non-residents who are not renting out their Spanish holiday home. This is in addition to the IBI council tax that all property owners, including non-residents, must pay.

If you don’t keep up with your taxes, then ultimately The Spanish Tax Authority has the power to make their presence felt by other means. In Spain, an embargo on your bank account is an accepted method of settling arrears.

Non-residents who can be difficult to contact and are unaware of the systems here are particularly vulnerable. Faced with the inconvenience and upheaval of getting your bank account functioning again, you’re likely to have wished you’d taken a more direct route and paid your taxes in full in the first place.

Summit meeting SUCCESSFULLY SCALING the summit of the Montgo Mountain proved a tough challenge for 11 members of the Javea U3A’s walking group.

by Jack Troughton THE 752M peak – the top of the elephant-shaped mountain’s ‘head’ – dominates the Marina Alta town and gave the group spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

The climb took two hours and the ideal weather conditions allowed the walkers to take in the Costa Blanca coast from Calpe in the south to beyond Gandia in the north.

Members of the walking group proved they had a head

for heights but normally take part in less “formidable walks” according to organisers.

The worthy town THE CHAP who did the re-paint on the Iglesia Paroquial de San Pere Apostol in Tavenes de Valldigna must have had a very steady hand or used a lot of masking tape to get all the lines straight, although while the façade looks fancy it isn’t actually all that ornate. One of the saints – at least I assume they are saints – in a wall niche is pointing upwards as if saying to the painter, “Missed a bit there, mate!”

THE SUNDIAL dated 1702 was showing twelve as the clock struck one, but I don’t suppose they had British Summer Time in those days, so it could be right. There again, I doubt if they’d be bothered an hour either way, back then, especially in Spain. If you wander under the narrow arch at the side of the church and keep going up the Carrer Pujada al Calveri, you will eventually come to the calvario, the twelve stations of the cross, that lead to a hermitage. The low walls are marked out in gleaming white but a series of steps have been made by some considerate person to save your legs making the long zig-zag walk. (Don’t be fooled by the gates you see as you climb the hill that look as if they are closed; there’s one at the side that is open).

There isn’t a great deal of history on show in Tavernes, but that doesn’t mean the town isn’t worth visiting, but watch yourself in the narrow streets, if the silly old chap that nearly ran me over in his ancient moped is anything to go by. He wasn’t looking where he was going and only just stopped from hitting me at knee height. His engine cut out and I’m pleased to say that he couldn’t get it started again, while I sauntered away undamaged.

I always find it sad when a town market has been forced to close because of the supremacy of the ubiquitous supermarket, but I’m pleased to report that the Mercado Municipal of Tavernes is alive and well and has been recently renovated. It’s a curious structure, a sort of Swiss chalet wooden roof, curved canopies and sinuous wire mesh, but it’s light and cool, with plenty of space so you don’t lock ankles with those dangerous wheeled baskets being driven by little old ladies.

If the busty city streets are too much, you can always take the ten-minute ride to the Playa de Valldigna, which, like most of the beaches on this stretch of coast, are almost deserted except for August, when the sun barely touches the sand for beach parasols.

When you see the buildings that run the length of the beach you can’t help but be reminded of the biblical story about building your house on sand because these come right up to the very beach. A shame, really, because that means there’s no prom to take a stroll along, and very few beach restaurants where you can dine cooled by the sea breeze. Mind you, those who have rented a flat with a sea view must be happy.

There’s a single chiringuito, marked out by a blue and white picket fence and a similar coloured striped awning. The floor is of unevenly laid bricks, which will undoubtedly be lifted at the end of the season, and you couldn’t accuse the place of having style. However, having trudged around three towns already that morning, it was delightful to sit down at the one free table for a late lunch and a kip on the beach afterwards.

Mum…! What’s on the Gogglebox?

CHANNEL 4 show Gogglebox is now half way through its second series and the programme has been receiving lots of critical acclaim, which could well be down to the way the producers went about bringing the show together.

If you’ve not seen it yet what you are treated to is four groups of real people at home in their living rooms passing comments on television shows.

Good idea of course … but how real are they is the question that needs to be asked! Let me now hand you over to Tania Alexander, one of the main players of the programme: With reference to this burning question executive producer Tania said, “One of the main challenges was finding contributors who weren’t desperate to be reality TV stars … no one has applied or been invited, we went all over Britain asking people who looked interesting if they wanted to do it ... we tried to get people who are real, not performers. If you think of the queue of applicants at Big Brother – those are the people we avoided.”

Pretty ‘in your face stuff’ I’m sure you’ll agree, and the lovely Tania just kept on going: “Most of the people needed persuading to do it, and although they sometimes got a bit jokey, they soon realised it wasn’t about that … it’s about their genuine reactions to what they’re watching.”

You could well now be thinking “Okay …interesting is that, but where are the laughs?” And I’m afraid

if that’s the road you’re going down you might not fancy tuning in. Back in comes smooth talker Tania Alexander who closed by saying: “Real people having their comments about what they really think of David Cameron or Boris Johnson is really interesting … the show isn’t just about having a laugh, we want to get some social commentary going.”

Celebrity Clips Gang of Four I’VE BEEN impressed with the way James Arthur has conducted himself since winning the X Factory, but he seems to have lost it a wee bit as he said to the BBC last week: “I really want to work with Eminem, he’s the best rapper on the earth!” Could it be that James is playing silly buggers knowing his album has entered at No2 and Eminem’s at No1?

I saw a video of Russell Brand being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight recently and was very impressed with his awareness of the poverty on our planet, a video that’s gone mega viral I might add. Now I see that he’s back with his old flame Jemima Khan. I’ve struggled with this man for some time, and now I’m thinking … is the viral vid yet another one of his scams?

Fun Loving Criminals singer Huey Morgan got loads of flak for smashing his mug and walking off the set of Never Mind the Buzzcocks last week. Lots of tweets popped up including ‘plastic beakers for next time’ and ‘the mug is getting a new handle from a dead tea cup donor’. Footnote: Huey walked off in protest about the time the filming was taking … and the audience was with him!

Completing the all-male lineup in this week’s CC-GOF is super saddo Sam Callahan, a 19-year-old X Factory contestant who has only been selling merchandise of himself backstage to his ‘Callafans’… get it!! He’s even got an online shop! Saddo Sam has since been hauled over the carpet about it ... Is the X Factory becoming a ‘greed’ breeding ground?

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish -57 Colloquial expressions WHEN YOU learn a language there is always the danger of giving grammar more importance that just “how people say things”. To learn a language well, grammar is vital as it gives you the “mechanics” of the language, but when you are communicating in everyday life you often hear, or need to use, expressions that just are “how people say things”.

Here are a few such phrases which you may hear as you are out and about. “¿Me oyes?” (Do you/Can you hear me?) This used to be used exclusively for telling off children who didn’t listen to their parents, but now you will hear it more often spoken by someone on a mobile phone when the connection is “breaking up”. “No te oigo” (I can’t hear you) is the equivalent of our “you’re breaking up”. I think Spanish is clearer in this situation! “¡Muchísimas gracias!” (Thank you ever so much). In the same situation you might also hear “Muy amable” (very kind) and also “se lo agradezco” (I appreciate it). The Spanish do express gratitude, even though they often miss out the routine “please” and “thank you” that we think is so vital to any kind of co-existence.

“Te invito a tomar algo”. (I’ll treat you/I invite you to a drink).

These are really two expressions which belong to two specific situations and which don’t translate into English all that well. “Te invito” really

means “I’ll pay” or “it’s on me” and can be used after you’ve had the drink as well as before. “Tomar algo”, which literally means “to have/ take something” represents the basic Spanish habit of doing everything over a drink or a bite to eat at any time of day or night.

“Me alegro”; “me alegro mucho” (I’m glad, I’m really glad). We say this in response to someone else’s good news as a way of sharing their joy. If someone tells you that they’ve at last found a job you say “Me alegro mucho”. On the other hand, if they tell you they’ve just lost their job, you should say “lo siento”. “¿Yo qué sé?” (What do I know! Or How should I know?) I often associate this phrase with adolescents, although it could be used by anyone, depending on the situation and attitude with which it is said.

Either way, it has to be accompanied with a big shrug of the shoulders.

“No tengo ni idea” (I have no idea!). This expresses the same emotion as “¿Yo qué sé?” and the two things may be said together for extra emphasis.

“No me di cuenta” (I didn’t realize). This is an extremely useful phrase and one you should have in your emergency phrase collection for any moment you are caught out doing the wrong thing or without the relevant piece of paper. “¡Oh perdón. No me di cuenta!”

A Taste For Green Tangerines ONE FOR the ladies this week, another clever chic-lit novel by Barbara Brisco, author of the recently reviewed Night of the Water Spirits. This one is set in the steamy tropics, with the heroine opting for working on an eco resort in the Indonesian rain forest and giving up a one-bedroom flat in London and a boring boyfriend in the process. With that the scene is set for romance among the vanilla pods or whatever it is they grow out there. La Belle Bisco knows the environment well, having lived there for 30 years or so and she has a witty and dramatic mix in her prose that carries the reader along with her as her story unfolds. Barbara Brisco is an intelligent writer and her books are written with a nose for the environment and the setting which so many steamy books set in steamy climates lack. Even if you’re not a romantic (shame on you) there worth reading for that alone. Clever chic-lit sums it up.

Stars 1:10 10 for the ladies with stars in their eyes......

Lions’ crowning glory

ROCK BAND Chess brings its colourful Queen Tribute Show to Ondara on Saturday 30th November for a special charity benefit concert for Teulada Moraira Lions Club.

And the gig at the Auditori Municipal d’Ondara will feature a spectacular light show and a fantastic light system.

Special guests ‘Hangover Tuesday’ will open the show at 8pm and Barry Moon and Susie Bond of Pure Gold 96.1FM will host a night of classic rock to remember.

The evening is a charity event and all proceeds will be used to support local families in need.

Peter Johnson of the Lions said it was decided to stage the show in Ondara because of the excellent facilities of the hall and since the demise of the Ondara, Jalon and Orba Lions; the promoters had identified the benefit of bringing a

live event appealing to all age groups to the area.

“Proceeds will go to help local families in need, especially just before Christmas,” he said. “We anticipated a great take up on tickets and to date three-quarters of them have been sold,” he added.

Alcoholics Anonymous ALCOHOL CONCERN UK is sponsoring an Alcohol Awareness Week in the UK from 18th November.

MANY PEOPLE will heed the warnings about potential damage to health, the family environment and to the community, so often caused by excessive drinking.

Life recipe

Hot cherries with ice cream I FIRST tasted this dish in Manchester in 1975 and I had forgotten all about it until I saw piles of fresh cherries in my local market.

I CAN’T claim it’s an original recipe, but it’s one of my favourites. Don’t try to remove the pips, just leave a spare plate on the table.

• 750g fresh cherries (choose the ripe ones that are deep purple in colour) • 100ml water • 3-4 tbls white sugar • Vanilla ice cream (or whatever flavour you prefer).

• Mint tips to garnish

1. Remove the stalks from the cherries and wash thoroughly. Place the cherries, water and sugar in a large pan and bring to a boil. Continue to cook over medium heat, stirring gently until the cherries start to go soft and the liquid turns syrupy (about 10 minutes).

2. Spoon the cherries into serving dishes and top with a blob of ice cream.

Pour over the syrup and garnish with mint tips.

Jazz in the blood SINGER RANDY Greer – widely known as the ‘New Nat King Cole’ - and his band the ‘Cole Diggers’ play Javea’s Parador Hotel on 22nd November.

by Jack Troughton THE LATEST evening in the Jazz at the Parador series, Randy is considered one of the best around and music is definitely in blood as Grandfather Sonny Greer was lead drummer with the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra, while his father owned a top Chicago jazz club.

And so it was no surprise to the family that young Randy chose music as a profession – and it was dad who first noticed his son’s voice had a close similarity to the great Nat King Cole and encouraged the young singer to incorporate some of the music legend’s numbers into his set.

Today, with 30 years in the business touring with the Cole Diggers around the world, audiences are treated to classics such as ‘Walking My Baby Back Home’, ‘Sweet Lorraine’, and other swinging arrangements originally written and performed by the ‘Unforgettable’ Nat King Cole.

The Parador evening starts at 8.30pm and popular tenor sax player Enric Peidro will be joining the quintet on stage as a special guest.

TODOS JUNTOS Jávea held a very successful and enjoyable Música para Todos for the second year. The Plaza de Iglesia in the Old Town of Jávea came to life once again on Saturday 2nd November with a series of concerts.

Four young guitarists opened the evening with beautiful performances as soloists and as a group, followed by the Poco Loco Steel Band, adding a Caribbean flavour to the event. Next was an exceptional church concert by the students of the Conservatorio de Música Xabia directed by Carmelo Fresneda, delighting the audience with a programme of classical music and a selection of songs from Les Miserables.

The event ended with the rousing sounds of The Mataos, the popular Javea rock band.

An amazing 3,500€ was raised, which as always will go to helping many of the families in Jávea in need of financial assistance in these difficult times.

As always Todos Juntos Jávea is very grateful to everyone who gave their support by attending the concerts and by giving generously. HI AUNTY: I wonder if you can help. I bought my wife a Samsung tablet and when she is reading an online newspaper she keeps getting a Spanish porn site appearing on her screen. The only time the problem occurs is when she is reading the Daily Mail newspaper. What should I download to block this explicit site appearing? Thank you in advance for your continued help. Gerry.

Aunty says: If this looks like a ‘POPUP’ in an internet browser then make sure the POPUP blocker is activated: Follow these steps to Block Pop-Ups in Android Browser: 1. Open the Internet Browser 2. Open the settings - the three small horizontal bars 3. Open Settings menu 4. Open ‘Advanced’ Menu 5. Mark ‘Block Pop-ups’ button (For Android Default browser, find it under ‘Page Content’ section

Otherwise, if you are using an ‘app’ to read the papers, go through all your installed apps and uninstall the ones that you think the ‘unwanteds’ are coming from. Or install an app like ‘Addons Detector’ that can scan your apps and block any potential unwanted apps from opening.

HELLO AUNTY: A programme called ‘lollipop’ seems to be the problem: I try to uninstall it but when I click uninstall I get a message that says: ‘an error occurred while trying to uninstall lollipop’, then asks ‘would you like to remove lollipop from the features and programmes list’.

I say yes then it just removes it temporarily.

Aunty says: Download and install ‘revouninstaller’. Run, and see if it locates anything with ‘lollipop’ and uninstall it. Then: using the settings menu, remove any related ‘lollipop’ extensions added to Google Chrome. Change your default search engine. Set your homepage.

Then download, install update and run antimalwarebytes to check your PC for any lingering traces.

Response: That sorted it out for me and even removed it from the programme listing.

‘Adware‘ nasties HI AUNTY: I keep getting pages popping up telling me my PC is under threat, e.g. from www.static.salesresourcepartners. com/g I am using Windows Security Essentials which is up to date. I have also scanned with Malwarebytes.

Neither has detected any problems. How do I stop them?

Ken Aunty says: ‘static. salesresourcepartners.com/g/?’ is a nasty piece of ‘adware’. It basically can take over your browser, and redirect your browser to other sites. It can also cause pop ups to appear, many of them adverts claiming you have problems with your PC, and clicking on the advert will take you to some software that can clear it up... do not do this! It is a relatively new virus active since October 2013.

And although your virus scanners and malware may not yet detect it, the only way to remove it is by going into the insides of Windows...which is fine if you are competent and confident enough to do this.

False start or false dawn?

SINCE MAN United beat Arsenal on Sunday, football media has gone into topsy-turvy land! This time last week, The Gunners were sure to win the Premier League title come May and The Reds were bound to drop out of the top four with David Moyes sacked along the way. All of a sudden though, Arsenal will apparently go trophy-less again this year while the ‘sleeping giant’ United will go on to secure another league title at a canter!? It’s a funny old game!

Of course last week’s result will have put a slight dent in Arsenal’s confidence and brought back a little optimism to the corridors of Old Trafford, but by no means did Wenger’s men completely wilt under the pressure nor did United’s performance unequivocally prove their doubters wrong.

So, while a false start has been blamed for United’s sluggish defence of their title thus far, it could equally be argued that we now are witnessing a false recovery. The idea of an unbeaten run was enough to send shivers down the spines of United’s rivals during Ferguson’s reign, but the current aura around the club is one of pretense rather than premonition.

Yes, The Reds haven’t lost in the previous nine matches in all competitions, winning six of those fixtures and scoring 16 goals, but closer inspection reveals that apart from the win against Arsenal, United found it hard work to dispatch Sunderland and Stoke, while Southampton grabbed a deserved equaliser at the death and Real Sociedad were only defeated by an own goal. It’s hardly terrifying stuff!

What may work in United’s favour though is Chelsea’s failure to find a suitable striker and Man City’s dismal away form - as well as the nerves that crept into Arsenal on Sunday, as Arsene Wenger admitted - but the teething issues under Moyes are unlikely to disappear completely so time will soon tell if last week was in fact a turning of the tide or simply a drop in the ocean.

We all have to begin somewhere when we start to play golf and playing a big golf course when inexperienced can be a daunting prospect; particularly when we are being watched by a large number of people waiting to tee off behind us. This is the case with a good percentage of golfers who come to play here at this time of the year.

To make things better for all perhaps it’s time to introduce more forward tees for these golfers so that they can learn the game without the added

Fishing Maggots End THE MATCH this week was the 9th round of the Winter Championship, the venue being the Eden canal stretch of the Rio Segura. The river, although it was still high, had just a nice pace on it. Again though, the inform pegs at the cottages were the ones to draw as the first two places came from there.

The cutting has begun at the bottom end of this stretch, so in the next couple of weeks they will stop any fishing around the cutting machinery. Also, we will have all the debris cut, left either on the banks, or floating like rafts on the venue.

LAST SUNDAY Torry entertained run-away league leaders Eldense In the “Match of the Day” in Tercera, an eagerly awaited contest between unbeaten Eldense and unbeaten at home Torry. Torry took the lead through Alberto on 38 mins and Eldense equalised through Aridane on 79 mins. It was an exciting game with a draw being a fair result. Torry travel to Ribarroja on Sunday and will be looking to win to continue their good run of form and position high up the table.

The 10th and penultimate round of the Winter League was fished at Nancy’s on 5th November: this match was transferred from the Mercadona stretch due to being overgrown. The cutters are now working their way up-stream and should be on the Eden Stretch within the next week.

Strong winds caused havoc on the day making pole fishing hard; also the wind was blowing rafts of cut reeds away from the bank where they had been lodged by the cutter, and this was also hampering using the feeder.

The Carp in this stretch are in pristine condition, they are fin perfect with their silver sides and their big yellow/orange tail: they look magnificent in the water.

The water fished reasonable well with the

main baits being maggot and sweet corn.

The big tax grabs in Spain and more…

THE SPANISH Government has announced that Plan PIVE, the scheme where massive discounts will apply to low emissions vehicles if scrapped as part of a sale, is to be extended for the fourth time.

THE SCHEME is basically that tax money of 2,000€ per sale will be used to discount the sale, coupled with discounts by the manufacturers and dealers.

The intention is to keep factory production lines going in these very tough times, and that is a good reason. However, it has now greatly affected the used car markets where vehicles bought 4 - 5 years ago are now depreciated to around 20% or less of their purchase price, meaning massive losses for the owners who bought them in good faith.

And we are all paying for the privilege of losing those vehicle investment amounts, as the cash for Plan PIVE is coming from the general taxes we all pay. So it is a double whammy loss, except for those who are buying, although the prices may not

be as good as they are advertised.

The base prices do not include many of the options we all expect now with our ‘gimmick’laden cars so when the options are added, plus at this time financing is usually a need, it means that the cars are even more expensive than expected.

And of course salesmen need commissions to be added on.

I personally would rather keep an older car that is in very good condition, serviced and driven well, than change it just because it is say five years old. But it will increase the values in 20 years of classic cars,

as many at this time that are 10 years plus are being scrapped.
