by Jack Troughton SCORES OF Santas mounted on gleaming Harley Davidson motorcycles roared through the Costa Blanca last Sunday on a mission to deliver Christmas presents to youngsters cared for by EMAUS. To enjoy a real winter warmer, forget the Ready Brek and just take part or watch this joy bringer of an annual treat for a very spe-

cial set of kids living in the charity’s homes.

The old saying giving is better than receiving really holds true on the Costa Blanca Bikers Espana Group ‘Toy Run’. At an emotional journey’s end in Alfaz, greeted by excited children singing ‘Feliz Navidad’ it’s understandable why bikers need to wear dark glasses.

RTN readers and advertisers can feel proud of making a handsome donation to the fund raising for this event – unfortunately, it was

impossible to bottle the cracking Christmas atmosphere to reward everyone who chipped in.

And because the children are wards of court and in the care of social services, RTN is unable to print photographs of delighted youngsters receiving their gifts.

Imagine over 100 Santas queuing to be handed an individually wrapped and tagged present.

They then give each gift to a child to the cheers

and applause of the other youngsters.

Two particular little ones – both aged three-years-old – are indelibly stamped in the memory for their saucer-eyed wonder at the whole occasion.

The lad received a suitably sized toy motorbike - to be ridden Flintstone style, propelled by foot power. He was off before removing all the wrapping.

continued from front page AND THE rather shy girl’s face lit up as she was presented with a doll’s push chair and was obviously delighted. So much so, a Santa had to give chase with another parcel, containing the doll destined to ride in style.

The biker group’s fundraising co-ordinator Peter Emmett organised a number of events to raise 14,000€ for EMAUS during 2013.

These included the Bay Radio Biker Babe Appeal; a Bikers versus Bowlers Challenge; the sale of 600 Biker Babe Calendars; and the RTN Christmas Appeal.

A large chunk of the money was donated to EMAUS earlier in the year to aid the charity’s ongoing work. It also allowed the purchase of Toy Run presents for the 46 children aged between two and 16. Each received several gifts, from bicycles and prams to mobile phones and electronic equipment for the teenagers.

And while the children waited for the Harley’s to arrive, they were entertained with a large bouncy castle, a magician and a Christmas disco – later the older ones were given a taste of life on the pillion of a Harley.

PILLION RTN’s own ride on a Harley had started in Benitachell earlier on a cold Sunday morning when I vaulted onto the pillion of Ken Kennard’s Harley Davidson Electra Glide – Ken concentrated on the driving, I cracked the jokes and took pictures.

Four bikes and seven riders set off. At Benissa numbers increased to six bikes and eleven riders and at MacDonalds Restaurant car park in Albir the population of Harleys grew to around the 100 mark.

down to Cala Finestrat and back onto Benidorm’s Poniente Beach for a pit stop at the Nevada Beach Cafe and much needed coffee (it was also a chance to rub some life into a now Rudolph-red nose!).

Back on the machine, it was into the narrow streets of Benidorm’s Old Town to the Town Hall for a group photo before continuing along the Levante Beach, through the Rincon and back to Albir. The Harleys head along the beach to Altea return to Albir and up to Alfaz for the party.

Running red lights in a stream of red-coated bikers was a real thrill. Horns were being sounded, crowds waved and bikers waved back. Such is the deep-throated rumble of a Harley engine, magnified many times over and echoing off buildings, the group warned

And it was a show-stopper. It was impossible for people to ignore – at one bar girls switched from taking ‘selfies’ to photograph the steel and chrome procession.

Christmas in Narnia at Terra Natura TERRA NATURA has become a winter wonderland after being transformed into Narnia featuring magical unicorns, knights, and the White Witch.

Terra Natura and RTN has treated children living at EMAUS homes to 200 free tickets to sample the world of CS Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia at first hand over the Christmas.

The kids and their carers will enjoy fun filled days at Christmas in Narnia and have the chance to see animals being fed and watch a series of special shows.

Special events at Terra Natura run between 11am and 5pm and entrance is 15€ - with season ticket holders able to enjoy the fun for free.

‘Padron’ deadline approaches

By Jack Troughton TOWN HALLS are urging expats to check their names are on the municipal register before the Central Government deadline of Tuesday 31st December.

Names on the ‘padron’ govern the size of grants for local authorities in Spain on a vital per capita basis as Madrid opens the coffers to help pay for local services.

And the size of a population of a particular community also governs the provision of schools, health centres, fire stations and numbers of professionals such as doctors and police officers.

RTN has highlighted the myth that

registering at the town hall has any tax implications – in fact, it opens the door to expats to enjoy many of the key services provided for the community.

The government’s calculation of grants to each council for 2014 is based on the numbers registered on each padron at the start of each year.

By registering – or insuring their names are still on the register – expats are helping every community enjoy the services it deserves.

It is also the path to making sure they are on the electoral register to vote in the European and local elections.

Record year for charity team

by Jack Troughton HARD WORKING volunteers and members of Jalon Valley HELP toasted a successful year at the charity’s Christmas Party as records tumbled.

Described as a “ding dong” 12 months because of the team’s physically achievements, the result has meant the charity has raised and donated more money than ever before.

Jalon Valley HELP has 136 volunteers and members and according to President Elaine Horton “they have worked so hard to raise more money than ever before” and by the end of the year “we will have donated more money than ever before.”

By the end of last month more than 67,000€ had gone into charity coffers and over 40,000€ was spent in grants to a variety of needy causes “I think Jalon Valley HELP is a charity that looks at everything in the wider sense,” said Elaine, speaking at the charity’s community base, Casa de Animo in Alcalali.

“We have a responsibility to people who are sick, to children living in difficult times and conditions, and also to the wider community in terms of getting information out there.”

In a new departure, the charity organised a successful Breast Cancer Seminar. “It was not full but it is something people have remembered and they are still ringing up about it.”

She said the charity’s Alcalali shop had been refurbished while a new store was opened in the centre of Jalon. “We also have a new equipment storage facility in Jalon which has taken hours of physical effort by the volunteers to get ready.”

RESOURCE And Elaine said Casa de Animo had developed as a “real community resource” with “all sorts of people coming and going.”

Used every single day, the building hosted popular coffee mornings and afternoon teas where people got together and made friends;

craft groups; a ‘men’s shed’ a social gathering and skills group to be tapped by the charity, and was about to start a Parkinson’s support group.

Elaine said the constant fund raising also help fund donations. Over the year Fontilles Hospital had received 5,000€; MABS Cancer Support Group 5,000€; ADIMA, the Pedregeur centre for disabled children 4,000€; and the town’s AMADEN, a centre for adults with mental health problems, 2,000€.

Last Friday night nine schools in the Vall de Pop each received a cheque, the overall total almost 14,000€.

Elaine said when new projects took off it was “really exciting”. She added: “What is re-

ally good for me is the way the community comes together – people are often saying ‘I can’t do much but I will do this!’.”

And she paid tribute to the efforts of the charity volunteers whether they worked in the shops, or knitted jumpers to keep children warm, or visited isolated and elderly people.

“We have people coming out of the woodwork and volunteering and saying ‘yes, I will do it’ and that is excellent,” said Elaine.

“And while we are saying thank you and well done to our volunteers, we are also saying thank you to the whole community as well – if they didn’t stick their hands in their pockets, we couldn’t do what we are doing.”

Mac the knife

THE DAILY Mail’s controversial satirical cartoon about life in the sun and the ongoing battle over Winter Fuel Allowance did not breach the Editor’s Code of Practice, the Press Complaints Commission has ruled.

The PCC received 36 complaints about the “offensive” Mac cartoon that showed a couple reclining by their swimming pool as a delivery of wine arrives. The caption read: “Oh goody! Here comes our winter fuel”.

However, the commission said the cartoon was satire and a commentary on the allocation of the benefit and Secretary of State for Works and Pensions Iain Duncan Smith’s plan to introduce a temperature test before expats receive the payment.

The complaints centred on the newspaper giving a misleading

impression that British pensioners living abroad did not need or deserve the payment and the cartoon portrayed a misleading and distorted view of the life of pensioners abroad – and discriminated against retired people.

THE PCC said: “Cartoons are a well-established method of newspapers making satirical comments about current affairs and the Commission would be reluctant to compromise the ability of publications to pass commentary in this matter.”

It accepted papers must abide by the code of practice and take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information and whilst free to be partisan, must distinguish between comment, conjecture and fact.

COMMENT It said: “The Commission was satisfied that readers generally would

have recognised that the cartoon represented the cartoonist’s commentary about the allocation of Winter Fuel Payments to expatriates rather than a genuine representation of the circumstances of expatriate Britons. There had not been a failure to distinguish between comment from fact.”

Further, the PCC could not identify any discrimination against an individual, or any inaccuracy that would trigger a right to reply, nor had it breached the right that everyone was entitled to respect for privacy.

“The Commission acknowledged that complainants found the cartoon offensive; however, it made clear that terms of the Editor’s Code of Practice do not address issues of taste and offence,” said the PCC. “The Code is designed to address the potentially competing rights of freedom of expression and other rights of individuals, such as privacy.

“Newspapers and magazines have editorial freedom to publish what they consider to be appropriate provided the rights of individuals – enshrined in the Code which specifically defines and protects these rights – are not compromised.”

But it said while there was no breach of the Code, the PCC would draw the complaints to the attention of the Daily Mail.

Perfect answer

by Jack Troughton REGULARS AT a popular Javea pub quiz used money raised 400€ during a weekly ‘fun round’ to buy electrical gaming equipment for the EMAUS home in Vergel.

Up to 62 people attend the Cafe Bar El Cortado in Javea Port to take part in the Thursday evening contest and make a donation for the special fund raising round of questions.

Hosts David and Elaine and quiz organiser Theresa Hulmes were pictured with some of the regulars last Thursday night along with a festively dressed Honey the dog.

Anyone interested in taking part in Theresa’s fun quiz can ‘book’ a place by calling her on 634 202 902. She told RTN: “It has really taken off at El Cortado and it gets very busy – it is a lot of fun and we would like everyone to know where the money went.”

Santa at special school

By Jack Troughton FATHER CHRISTMAS thrilled youngsters at the Raquel Paya School for special needs children in Denia on Wednesday morning when the man in red kept a much anticipated appointment.

The youngsters have varying levels of disability but like all children around the world are filled with excitement by Christmas and the Three Kings.

The Original Charity Shop and Library in Javea uses the proceeds of a well-supported Christmas Raffle to buy the kids presents every year.

Charity members visit the school – which takes children from all over the Marina Alta - to watch ‘Papa Noel’ deliver the gifts and be entertained by pupils, parents and staff.

And the school hall was filled with clapping, cheers, and chanting of names as each youngster was called up to meet Santa Claus and receive an individual present.

Calp awards 1,100€ to three shops THE DEPARTMENT of Trade and Creama in Calp has awarded cash prizes to three of its ‘best-dressed’ shops in the town over the festive period. A total of 1,100€ was handed to three delighted winners, the first prize being 500€, the second 400€ and the third 200€, awarded for the most attractive window displays.

No hiding place SPAIN HAS ceased to be a “safe haven” for British criminals as a string of arrests under the successful Operation Captura has proved.

by Jack Troughton SINCE THE Crimestoppers and the National Crime Agency – formerly the Serious Organised Crime Agency – launched the operation and released information about criminal fugitive on the run, 56 of 76 have been brought to justice.

Last month Crimestoppers named an ‘unlucky 13’ in the eighth appeal to the public for help, all described as “most wanted” fugitives believed to be hiding in Spain.

Three of them have already been arrested – 78-year-old paedophile Michael McCartney was held in Alicante within hours of the appeal being launched.

The pervert, from Letchworth, Herts, was found guilty of sexual offences involving young boys in March this year. He failed to attend court in April for sentencing and was arrested on 14th November.

For years Spain was notorious as an appealing refuge for British criminals but this changed in 2004 when European Arrest Warrants were introduced, making it easier to arrest fugitives on the run and return them to the UK – and avoiding complicated and costly extradition hearings.

RETURN Between April 2009 and April 2013, 1309 criminals were returned to Britain from Spain alone, and 377 from the rest of Europe.

These included 27 rapists, 44 murderers, and 63 child sex offenders.

Lord Ashcroft, the founder and chairman of Crimestoppers said: “The fact we are able to once again launch Operation Captura is an indication of how successful the last seven

years have been since its inception.

“However, despite our success so far, there are still a number of dangerous criminals who see Spain as a safe haven to hide from their past, but with the support of the Spanish and UK public, we can hunt them out and bring them to justice.”

And Frank Cole, head of international operations for the National crime Agency, said the body and its partners would pursue fugitives “relentlessly” to show Spain was not a haven.

He said the exceptional level of collaboration and intelligence sharing with Spain had been “vital” in making arrests.

“The most important thing though is the power of Operation Captura to harness the eyes and ears of the public, both in the UK and in Spain.”

Only the lonely

A STUDY by La Caixa has revealed that Spain is at the bottom of Europe’s birth rate ladder.

Families with parents who ideally would like at least two children are producing an ‘only child’, mostly due to the pressures of the economic crisis. In presenting the study, Jaime Lanespa, executive director of the La Caixa Foundation, outlined some recommendations to reverse the trend, which included improving educational facilities for toddlers, which he said should be seen as “an investment and not an expense.” He pointed out that the lack of childcare facilities; the high level of unemployment; job insecurity and the lack of flexibility in working conditions are some of the factors that conspire to keep the Spanish birth rate lower than anywhere else in Europe.

Art exhibition supports the ‘Free Pantry’ LA ASOCIACIÓN Despensa Solidaria now distributes food to approximately 200 people each week as part of its project to support the children of needy families on referral from City social workers and health centres. 80% of the families are Spanish living in the Alicante area.

President of the Asociation, José María Solbes, said: “We began working on this four years ago within the then Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo. Things were different then – there were more resources

and less need. Now it is a fight to get the provisions we need and we are totally dependent on volunteer contributions.

The people we feed are working people like you and me who have suddenly become unemployed and unable to pay the mortgage.”

To help support the ‘free pantry’, there is to be an exhibition of the work of artists who have donated their works for sale at the University of Alicante, to run until 9th January.

We are now multi-cultural and tolerant SOON IT will be Christmas. Somehow it seems less Christmas living in a sunny country with Palm trees and orange trees in December. I most assuredly do not miss seeing snow, except on the telly.

We were reminiscing about what Christmas was like in the past. We used to be allowed to call it Merry Christmas, but now days we have to be politically correct out of fear of offending someone. Now we have to refer to it as “Happy Holidays” or “Xmas” or “Seasons Greetings.”

As a child, I used to see Christmas TV programmes about the birth of Christ. I really enjoyed those stories.

Sadly those programmes have been removed since we are now multi-cultural, and ever so tolerant. As a child I still remember dreading having to eat turnips and the Turkey stuffing. I vowed, when I grow up, I will never eat turnips or Turkey stuffing.

As a teenager I recall receiving polyester shirts for Christmas, the ones whose buttons would fall off. Invariably I had to return them to the shop whence they

were purchased and exchange them for something more desirable. As a teenager I recall getting Old Spice after shave as a present. Upon putting the present in a drawer, I would find another box of Old Spice aftershave from the previous Christmas that had never been used.

As an adult I became a tad annoyed seeing shops advertising for Christmas beginning in October, and feeling pressured to spend too much money on presents not liked nor wanted. As an adult there was always pressure to buy many presents for the children because the neighbour’s children always got lots of presents. Keeping up with the Jones’ was something I loathed.

This Christmas we are going by the motto, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” At the risk of being non-politically correct, may we sincerely offer you all a genuine Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

GIVING4GIVING HAVE been involved in organising charity events since March this year to raise funds for local cancer charities which has resulted in them raising 10,400 euros. Gary would like to extend special thanks to the generous people of the Costa Blanca, the press, local radio and businesses for their support over the last eight months. The money raised has been possible by several different events and the g4g charity shop in La Nucia and they hope to carry on the good work next year. Last but not least we would like to thank Round Town News for their continuous support and we feel our success would not have been possible without their help.

Get his facts correct I WAS really angry to read the letter on ‘No Heating Handouts’ from a person who does not live in Spain.

This person needs to get his facts correct...in fact there are many pensioners living in Spain who are also heating only one room in their homes and cannot afford food, because the electricity/gas is far higher than in UK and these people are not getting or expecting handouts from the British Government.

Many people who have not worked or even paid taxes in England are getting the money which I and many other

people living in Spain have paid into, and for other people to get the benefit.

Our homes are very cold and we spend many hundreds of pounds each year to try to heat them in the winter and need fans or air-conditioners in the summer.

Don’t tell me that we should not expect the heating allowance! If many expats returned to UK, the government would be paying more benefits to them there than the £100 we receive each year. How would this person feel if he paid 110€ every ten days to heat their home by using gas bottles, as some people do. If the Government had got

their house in order by not giving benefits to people in UK who certainly should not be getting them, then you can tell me that England cannot afford to give all and sundry. How dare you compare expats with the scroungers already using the Government for their lifestyle in UK... we worked very hard for the measly pension we get and the heating allowance and we certainly are not living a luxurious life as you seem to think we are.

Come and spend a few days with me in my house, then you would certainly change your opinion and not assume that life is different for us in the winter than the older people in England.

Life-gambling drivers RE THE ‘Letter of the week’ in issue No 735 from Andy Johnson and his concerns that a higher motorway speed limit will cause more accidents, I note that he complains of drivers behind ‘flashing lights’ in order to make him move to the SLOW lane.

Once again we have the misconception that the nearside lane is the ‘slow lane’ for vehicles travelling under the speed limit - heavy goods etc. But this is not so. The lane is for all vehicles and should be used whenever possible and the outer two (or one) is be used only when overtaking.

Is he aware that it is now law in England that after overtaking you must return to the inside lane which has been brought in to negate the frustrations and dangers of the ‘centre lane hogger’ who causes more accidents than any speeders?

Anyone has to sympathise with his friend’s accident, but this would appear to have been caused by drunk driving rather than speed. Speed is not in itself a killer (if this was so Formula 1 would not exist). It is mainly the inability of drivers to realise their driving capabilities and keep to them.

Unfortunately, Mr Johnson is driving in a country where bad driving seems to be endemic. Perhaps he should keep this in mind, drive a little more defensively and let the lifegambling drivers ‘get on with it’ as he is the one who will return home after a trip, the likelihood being that the ones he complains about will end up in a mangled mess of metal, hopefully without hurting others. IF YOU were in Alfaz yesterday, you might have noticed a character standing outside the Notary’s Office wearing little more than a grim frown, smouldering underpants, a ripped tee shirt and torn trainers – let me tell you here and now; that was me…

YUP, TEN years after my Spanish adventure started it came crashing down as the old ancestral home (i.e. the kids’ inheritance) was sold for a song; or more accurately about half its original cost. If you did see me in Alfaz that small piece of paper, with wisps of smoke making concentric eddies into the air, was my cheque for half-a-crown (that’s 12.5p in new money). I’ll think I’ll put it towards next week’s Irish Lottery.

“But don’t be grim,” as Eric Idle sings in, Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life, there’s always someone worse off. So, this isn’t a cautionary tale because I’m sure many others have trodden this path before. No instead, it is an eye to the future. And this year I’m cutting back on the cynicism and embracing Christmas with childlike wonderment. I’m going to be singing along with Slade, Wizzard, John and Yoko, Mud and Shakin Stevens (and maybe even the X Factor winner), loudly ruining all those Christmas songs we know and love.

I’ll be making paper chains and putting up the tree without complaining (well, probably not too much).

I’m going to be putting away mince pies by the cartload and quaffing all the fortified wine I can get me hands on. You see, I’ve had Monty at work onto me and he says, “Wattsie, ya just gotta play whatever cards you’re dealt with well.” And he’s is right, so in-

stead of being glum you’ve got to look at all the stuff you should be grateful for.

Take tonight for example, my granddaughter has invited me to her Nativity. I haven’t been to one since my kids were small. And also, so I’ve been promised, along with the glorious Christmas Story there will be lots of pop and cakes. I can’t wait. I also can’t wait for next year when there will be another three grandchildren joining the fray – and guarantying Nativities well into my dotage. So you see, that character you saw in Alfaz is well on the road to recovery… He won’t have time to be glum!

FELIX NAVIDAD, FOLKS… I’d like to saw a quick thanks to my shifting coalition of dramatis personae that grace these columns.

Their input and comments are always welcome. A Merry Mundomar Christmas!

BRISK BIDDING at the Bombers Bar Auction in Javea Port insured sales rocketed and more than 920€ was raised to be shared between the Volunteer firemen of Balcon Al Mar and the town’s branch of the Red Cross.

The bar was packed for the sale last Saturday night and the hammer came down on a host of donated goods, the proceeds to be shared equally b between the two good causes.

Away in a manger

CUTE PUPS and their mum have been rescued from a ‘manger’ of hay from a villa underbuild in a moving canine Christmas story.

by Jack Troughton Volunteers from animal charity AKIRA were in Benimallunt in the Vall de Pop to capture another stray and noticed the Podenco family living amongst the structure of the unfinished home.

And this week the charity successfully brought the five puppies and the mother in from the cold after caging the adult dog. AKIRA’s Maggie Shuck said: These pups are so sweet and now have a chance of a good life instead of being on the streets.” She added: “It was the setting that was so beautiful – the underbuild is quite big and in the middle were some bales of hay. In the middle of these was a little space containing the little ones. “When the mum was caught we went back to collect the puppies. Care of plants over Christmas by

AT THIS time of year many expats are busy with the preparations and enjoyment of two weeks of festivities stretching from Nochebuena (Christmas Eve), to Los Reyes (The Thee Kings) with the Año Nuevo (The New Year) in the middle but at the same time there are three sets of plants that need some care.

Firstly those plants in window boxes or pots to cheer up the front of the house. Typically these are poinsettias, cyclamens, mini roses, mini Christmas trees , crotons, kalenchoes , azaleas, chrysanthemums, pansies and violas.

Many of these will have been grown in hot houses and until a few days before delivery to garden centres were used to almost continuous tray or drip feeding. So plant all of these in a moisture retaining compost mix and water them once or twice a week to keep the compost just damp especially if they are placed where they will receive sun for most of the day.

Secondly do visit the greenhouse and/or cold frame every few days as these can get warm on sunny days and cuttings and seedlings can irreversibly dry out.

Thirdly emergent seedlings in the vegetable garden may

still have shallow roots so don’tvlet these dry out.

Fourthly newly purchased house plants, especially flowering ones, will need watching and timely watering.

These will often have been used to a hot house with a high humidity but although living spaces in the house will be warm from log stoves or central heating the air will be dry with little humidity. So check the dampness of compost every two days and if it is starting to dry out give the plant a watering and also spray the leaves with a fine jet water sprayer.

Christmas gifts may be any of the plants listed earlier plus bulbs. These are best placed on a regularly used covered terrace and if brought inside restrict the hours in a hot room.

Lastly if tender potted plants have been kept on open or covered terraces, or around the front porch, for a Christmas effect do now give them protection from the possibility of freezing winds and heavy frosts during January, February and early March.

with lengths of wood to create a secure temporary green house for around fifty plants.

In fact the cold house gets quite warm so the door is opened up once a week and if things are drying out the inside is lightly hosed with a fine jet of water.

The New Year awaits AS 2013 draws to a close we start to wonder what will 2014 have in store for investors.

The consensus view suggests that global growth is likely to strengthen in 2014 and that interest rates will remain low for 2014.

Companies in general are cash rich having cut their costs back and not expanded which means the real prospect of dividend growth across all industry sectors.

Although we’ve seen some signs of recovery in Europe, this should be viewed as a statistical event coming off extremely low levels of growth. There are still many problems within the Eurozone that need to be overcome; it still faces the real prospect of deflation in the coming year due to government policies which doesn’t bode well for savers.

In Spain, while unemployment remains high, consumer confidence, retail sales and PMIs have been slightly better in recent months.

The gradual rebalancing of the Spanish economy towards exports is also a really positive development.

Exports to non-EU countries have soared – total exports are now 20% above their peak in 2008; which

is an important step to restoring investor confidence and attracting long-term capital to the region. What’s more, the country has taken drastic measures to reduce labour costs and make the labour market more flexible. Spanish average hourly labour costs are twothirds that of France and through these labour reforms Spain is winning back its competitiveness. In addition, Spain is making major progress towards cleaning up its under-capitalised banks and strengthening its financial sector.

At the beginning of 2014 we have the prospect of yet more political gridlock in the US as they try to deal with their ever growing debt problem, let’s hope they resolve it quicker this time round. Also as the Federal Reserve begins the process of unwinding its easy monetary policy, this will have a bearing on asset allocation decisions globally, and should work in favour of equities.

In the UK one area that is receiving coverage is the introduction of Capital Gains Tax on non-resident owners of UK property. This will presumably also apply to properties held by non UK pension schemes such as QNUPS and QROPS and together with the Non-

Resident landlord tax on rental income would seem to make UK property a less attractive investment than previously thought.

Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year 2014 DEAR CLIENTS and Friends, It seems like it was yesterday when the deadline for submitting your non resident tax returns was so far away and yet the holiday season has suddenly arrived.

We hope to have met our clients’ expectations when dealing with their marriages and divorces in spain and we would also take this opportunity to congratulate those clients, from different countries, who sold, purchased or exchanged their properties through our firm and kindly took our advice about the importance of having a Spanish will drafted when being an owner of a property in spain.

Year 2013 has been a difficult year for some people; and we received an increased number of cases about debt recovery and indeed some of our commercial clients decided to sell commercial premises through our firm before things became harder.

Fortunately only a few of our clients were involved in a road traffic accidents and

suffered personal injuries, naturally we dealt with these cases as expediently as possible and today these clients have fully recovered or are recovering having received a fair compensation.

Sadly some clients and friends passed away during this year and our condolences go out to their surviving spouses, children etc; and again in these cases we have assisted as rapidly as possible to help the heirs when dealing with the inheritance in Spain and the UK. Ant and Dec may have the jokey, comedy duo presenting act down to a T, but when it comes to the more serious stuff, the pair can be relied on to step forward and do their bit as well.

By Carrie Gregory SO, GIVEN that it’s that time of year again, they’re on board to co-present ITV’s annual charity appeal, joining Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby and Christine Bleakley and Paddy McGuinness.

For the uninitiated, Text Santa (Friday 20th December, ITV1, 9pm) is a three-hour-long fundraising extravaganza filled with celebrities doing all manner of silly things, as well as festive performances and tear-jerking reports about those who stand to benefit from the money raised.

Chances are this won’t be the first you’ve heard of Text Santa and all it’s doing this year for Age UK, Barnardo’s, BeatBullying, British Heart Foundation, CLIC Sargent and Help the Hospices.

This time around, the build-up towards the main event started early, with Davina McCall’s summertime celeb dance show Stepping Out offering 15p from each vote to the cause, and This Morning’s `Take a Moment” campaign, which ran during the autumn contributing £167,390.

In tonight’s festivities, stars of Coronation Street perform a special version of Fairytale of Weatherfield - featuring Shane MacGowan of the Pogues, while the cast of Emmerdale do their bit by appearing in an exclusive sketch with a Text Santa twist.

Meanwhile, Mr McGuinness will no doubt feel right at home, as we’re treated to a unique edition of Take Me Out, with older people looking for their perfect partner for Christmas.

And as if that little lot wasn’t enough to keep you entertained for the night, there’ll also be a chance to see the results of the Big Reunion Christmas single. Blue, 5ive, 911, Atomic Kitten, Honeyz, B*Witched and Liberty X have been back in the studio, recording Wizzard’s hit I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday.

It may all be fun on the night, but the presenters don’t lose sight of the fact that it’s all in aid of a great cause.

“When you hear some of the stories, they really do make your heart ache,” reveals Dec. “I do well up. Most of us are having a really good time with family and friends at Christmas but not everyone is as lucky and so it is a really nice thing to be able to help people at that time of year.”

Last year saw the show bring in a whopping £5.5million for its chosen charities – can this year’s total top that?

WHAT’S WORSE than spending the festive season with your family in Midsomer, the place where, if you hear footsteps on the roof on Christmas Eve, it’s probably a serial killer rather than Santa Clause?

By Rachael Popow WELL, HOW about spending it in Midsomer in a hotel all on your own?

Because that’s the fate facing DCI John Barnaby’s new sidekick DS Charlie Nelson as the hugely popular detective series begins.

But even once he’s found somewhere to stay, adjusting to life in Britain’s most picturesque death trap proves difficult.

Gwilym, whose previous credits include The Hollow Crown, Restless and Fresh Meat, explains: “DS Nelson is from the city and he finds village life and the pace a bit different. It’s daunting

how everyone knows everyone else’s business. He comes in with lots of police jargon and tends to talk too much.”

This seasonal episode gets off to a grisly start when furniture-maker Conor Bridgeman (Jonah Russell) is stabbed with an antique sword during a ghosthunting party at a supposedly haunted manor house in Morton Shallows.

Local historian Brendan Pierce (Les Dennis) believes the killing could be the work of Rose Wilton, a blacksmith’s daughter who’s been dead for 127 years.

made on the night of the murder seems to back up his theory, but there may be a few living locals with a motive as well.

The coppers discover that Conor was a serial philanderer, who also happened to be involved in fractious negotiations with the owner of the haunted house, Simon Fergus-Johnson (Mark Heap), whose family has plenty of problems of its own.

But while Nelson may be wondering just what he’s let himself in for, Gwylim couldn’t be happier with his new job.

“It’s like joining a big family. All the cast and crew have been very welcoming.”

NO OFFENCE to Doctor Who, Gangsta Granny or even Mrs Brown, but for many viewers, the best present the BBC can give us this festive season is a new episode of Sherlock.

Not only is it one of the most acclaimed dramas of the past few years, but some of us have been getting a little tired of waiting to find out just how the world’s greatest sleuth managed to fake his own death.

If you didn’t see the last episode of series two, which aired all the way back in January 2012, it saw master criminal Moriarty cooking up a fiendish plan to discredit the sleuth. But not content with merely destroying his arch-rival’s reputation, he then went one step further, telling Sherlock that unless he committed suicide, everyone he cared about (admittedly, not a very long list) would be killed.

The detective duly threw himself off the top of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, leaving his sidekick Dr John Watson grief-stricken – yet the final shot revealed to viewers that Sherlock was still alive.

Sherlock Be ready to be gripped again as we catch up with Watson. As in real-life, two years have New passed since the devastating events of The Reichenbach Fall, and he seems poised on the brink Years of domestic bliss, even if he does still miss his eccentric former roommate.

IT IS a truth universally acknowledged that people just can’t stop tinkering with Pride and Prejudice.

However, there’s one homage that seems to have impressed even the most hardcore Austen purist, and that’s PD James’ sequel Death Comes to Pemberley.

The crime writer’s acclaimed novel takes some of the book’s much-loved characters and puts them in the middle of a detective story. And now to mark the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice, it’s been brought to the screen in this threepart adaptation.

Making the decision to buy a holiday home is a big one that can bring huge enjoyment and added value to your life.

However, it is also an investment that needs continued TLC. It can be so easy once you have purchased your property and returned to the UK to put it out of your mind until your next break away.

This shouldn’t cause a problem provided you are sure that all tax matters and legal affairs are being taken care of.

Life Kids go ‘radio ga ga’ at Christmas

BAY RADIO’S seventh annual Christmas Party for the youngsters of the Preventorio de Gandia was once again a packed afternoon of festive fun.

By Jack Troughton FROM THE moment nearly 50 children flood into tinseltown – Javea’s football ground – to the moment they left on Tuesday the air was crackling with excitement.

The Javea-based radio station asks its listeners to chip in with donations and presents for the children cared for by a handful of nuns and volunteers in Gandia and a similar establishment in Elche, and every year the public generously responds.

The logistics of Operation Christmas Party are quite

impressive. A team of 12 volunteers – many from the Javea International Baptist Church – took four days to wrap the gifts.

They used around 110 metres of festive wrapping paper, 50 metres of wrap kindly donated by Quicksave Javea.

And on the big day the children and carers are bussed down to Javea for an action packed day, with a slap-up meal filled with favourites like chocolate and crisps...and the odd sensible morsel.

MAGIC They also take the opportunity to test out two bouncy castles, the football field – Sister Amelia can be very competitive – face painting and jewellery making.

There was also magical entertainment provided by a clown.

The highlight of the party was once again the arrival of Father Christmas who

handed each of nearly 50 young and impressively polite guests plastic sacks stuffed with presents.

Bay Radio’s Graham Barber thanked everyone who had again supported the station’s appeal. “It never ceases to amaze us how, in difficult times; our listeners club together in some way to help change these children’s lives and give them a little faith in the future.”

He said the appeal helped provide something for the little ones who were the future. “It is a real reason to have faith in people and it does not matter who you are, when you see the kids go up and get presents from Father Christmas you see how much they appreciate it rather than take things for granted.

“These kids look forward to this day every year and with the sisters and volunteers who look after them it is just brilliant.”

A not so ‘Golden’ Sir Steve now!

IT’S ALWAYS good to find info for you about up-coming shows and when I spotted an item last week about such a scenario, and it had Sir Steve Redgrave’s name on it, I was immediately interested to take a closer look. Sadly, as I read on my master plan took a serious downward turn, and when you find out what I’m banging on about, the word ‘downward’ fits very nicely in the pun area.

He then reminded us that Sherlock is back on the BBC1 on 1st January 2014 at 10pm ... cheeky boy!

Taylor Swift has had quite mixed bag of a year having started it with all sorts going down about her and Harry Styles being on, then off, then on again, then … and her single ‘22’ giving her a fourth top 10 in the UK. It has now closed very nicely with her fans in Perth, Australia, singing an impromptu ‘Happy Birthday’ to her and reminding her she’s actually 24 and not 22.

Staying in Australia, four lads, Jay, Neil, Simon and Will, they of Ch4’s ‘The Inbetweeners’ fame are down-under to film the follow up movie to their hugely successful first outing in 2011. The accompanying foto shows the boys in their usual naff kit at an amusement park, and the film follows them on a trip round Australia. Due for release next summer: Hoorah!

Leslie Nielsen, who made the lead role his own, won’t be in the new film. Ed Helms, a guy I´ve not heard of before, will take over the role, so let’s hope he’s got thick skin as he might well need it.

I was only saying last week about how we should all support Ch4, and I might have to chew a bit of dirt here as ‘The Jump’ will go out on that channel. The ever present Divina McCall will once again be fronting the show, but for me it’s all shaping up to watching some catch-up programmes on the channel and passing on Sir Steve selling out to the green back dollar.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Long term problems with Spanish THERE ARE certain aspects of the Spanish language which advanced learners and even fluent non-native speakers have problems with, so if you have the same problems, at least you know you are in good company!

Here is a list which might help you feel better, or at least specify the things you need to work on, with patience and over a long period of time.

When to use direct and indirect object pronouns, especially “lo”, “la” “le” and “se” (along with the plurals “los” “las” and “les”: it might help you to know that even the Spanish get these wrong at times, the only difference is that they probably don’t worry about it.

When to use the subjunctive: The problem here is that sometimes the reasons are very subtle. The good news is that you will always be understood even if the subjunctive makes no appearance in

your Spanish whatsoever.

When a verb is reflexive and why: There are times when both reflexive and non-reflexive forms mean the same thing.

When in doubt, err on the side of the reflexive as the Spanish are very fond of them in general.

When to use “ser” and “estar”: I have no words of comfort about this - it is an on-going battle. However, going back to basics sometimes helps and I’ve always found this rule of thumb extremely useful: SER for “who, what, when” and ESTAR for “where, how”.

Which past tense to use - out of so many that seem to mean the same: again, this comes with time, and sometimes more than one can be correct anyway. One strategy is to get comfortable using one past tense and then move on to another one when you’re good and ready.

learner then not all the above will make sense to you of course, but if you are an intermediate learner or beyond, you will probably identify with every point. However, all learners need to have realistic expectations of what they can achieve when studying Spanish. Members of the European Kids Association helped create an exciting atmosphere for visitors – children were given the opportunity to have faces painted as they waited for Santa Claus to arrive.

EKA encourages young people to get involved in local community projects and will launch a series of ‘EKA Meet Ups’ in the New Year – the first to be held in Altea.

U3A helps out

FESTIVE FUND raising by members of U3A Vall de Pop has helped good causes as people get into the spirit of Christmas.

The organisation’s Casual Choir visited the Casa de Cultura in El Vergel to take part in a carol concert organised by SCAN, helping put a much-needed 542€ into the popular animal charity’s coffers.

And a raffle held at the Christmas Extravaganza raised 200€ - a cheque later presented to Catherine Perez of HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta by U3A President Bob Welham.

A grateful Catherine said the money was most welcome and would help the charity’s work at a demanding time of year.

Retiring with thanks

By Jack Troughton GRATEFUL MEMBERS of the Javea Branch of the Royal British Legion thanked retiring Chairman Roger Dawes for his hard work and loyalty at the annual Christmas Lunch.

Roger was presented with a painting of Old Javea and a restaurant voucher to enjoy a meal during the celebration at La Cocina Restaurant.

Following his arrival in the Marina Alta resort in 2002, he served a total of 11 years as first Vice-Chairman and then taking over the helm of the branch – he was following in the footsteps of his father, a previous branch President.

And during his time in office, Roger helped attract new members who enjoyed the social side of the branch and helped raise cash for the Poppy Appeal.

In recent years, Roger has been proud to announce the annual appeal has reached the 11,000€ mark, a period of collecting that culminates in the Sunday afternoon Remembrance Service at the Fisherman’s Church in Javea Port.

The branch meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at L’Ancora, Arenal, at 11am.

Help for families over Christmas MEMBERS OF Teulada Moraira Lions Club were in Ondara this week to present a cheque for 3,000€ to the town hall to help families in need over the festive season.

And around 90 people enjoyed a Christmas lunch at La Masena Restaurant, while those a little more energetic headed for the Dance and Dine Group’s bash at the Toscamar Dance Cafe.

Winter rowing challenge: Ibiza to Benidorm A GROUP of intrepid Benidorm veterans are planning to row an impressive 20 hours from Ibiza to Benidorm in January! Around 45 rowers with an average age of 50 will start the 121-mile (75 nautical miles) crossing on Saturday 25th January at around 4pm in a feluccastyle craft, scheduled to arrive in Benidorm at around 12 noon the next day. Several supporting boats will accompany them on their journey so they will not be alone. The trip is planned in January due to the calm seas at that time of year.

Fillet steak with tomato and red wine sauce

Torrevieja Dining Club

A TENDER fillet steak is a real treat but it needs a good sauce – and this one is rich, red and robust. It will take an hour or so to prepare, but it’s well worth the effort.

• 2 fillets steaks • A knob of butter • Half an onion, finely chopped • A clove of garlic, chopped • 6 cherry tomatoes, quartered • A sprig of rosemary • A couple of sprigs of thyme • A glass of red wine • 200ml beef stock • A pinch of sugar • Black pepper

1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan and gently sweat the onion and garlic until soft.

Add the tomatoes and continue to cook gently until they begin to break down.

Next, add the rosemary and thyme with the wine, stock and sugar. Simmer gently for about half an hour.

2. Strain the sauce through a fine sieve

and press out all the juices. Return the liquid to a clean pan and continue to simmer for about 20 minutes until you are left with about 6 tblsp of glossy, slightly sticky sauce.

3. Season the steaks with black pepper

and grill or fry to your liking. Serve on hot plates with the sauce spooned over and around.

Serves: 2, Preparation time: 5 minutes, Cooking time: 1 hour

THE TORREVIEJA Dining Club has for many years given generously to organisations that make life easier for others. For example: Alzheimer’s; Samaritans; Sunshine Club; Aspinal; Lorca Earthquake Appeal & the Red Cross - each of these were consulted to their individual needs then suitable gifts were given rather than monetary help.

This year will be the third time the town of Rojales has received food and basic goods to the value of 1,500€. Social Services will then distribute as required for a few months to those families most in need.

Many thanks to all our members who contribute towards our charities, at the same time enjoying our monthly luncheon at the Olympia Restaurant.

Over the last twelve years 21,150€ has been donated to charity by the Torrevieja Dining Club.

We know clubs and organisations in the area have helped many causes throughout the year to those most in need. All those drops add up to quite a pool!

The show runs from 8th to 12th January and celebrates the centenary of the first recorded pantomime version of the much loved story of Dick and his cat (these days that might be Kat!).

Once again Dick is off to London seeking fame and fortune but (as usual) needs the help of the audience as fate takes them on a journey across exotic lands and mystical worlds. Feel free to cheer, hiss and sing along to aid the popular hero become Lord Mayor.

It is a rags to riches story and a musical extravaganza for the whole family.

Can Dick and his loyal pet Tommy defeat Queen Rat and the vermin gang, will he win the hand of the lovely Alice, and will he come up trumps in the fortune stakes? You bet he will!

Rhythm and blues returns

HI AUNTY: I have lost magnet link, how do I restore it? Can you help? PJH Aunty says: I assume you mean you are having problems with a ‘magnet link’ on a download site. Usually you simply click on a magnet link on a torrent website, and it opens in your p2p filesharing program.

If you mean when you click on a magnet link and it does not do anything then: A) Make sure your p2p program is installed correctly and B) Make sure your file associations within that p2p program are correctly set up for magnet links.

How you do these will depend on which of the many p2p programs you are using…

No-one knows

HI AUNTY: Here is a question that none of my computer friends seem able to answer: In the add or remove programs and updates I have hundreds of updates listed ranging from: Microsoft. NET Framework 2.0 Service pack 2 installed 26/11/2009 through to Service pack 4 Updates for IE8 from 2009 thru to 10/10/2013: Updates for Windows XP from 15/01/2008 thru to 10/10 2013: The question is, can I safely delete the earlier updates keeping only the latest?

Can you please help as if these earlier updates are no longer required I could save some disc / memory space: Paul Aunty says: It may not be a good idea to remove all the updates, as some of them may still be relevant, and may not have been updated with later updates. However, if you are no longer using IE8, then yes remove those updates - no point in having updates installed for something you know is no longer used.

Best protection

DEAR AUNTY: Please could you advise me of the best protection against mal viruses that I should use in general as when I had to put my laptop in to sort out a virus problem it came back without my Anti malware (Malwarebytes I think it was) and also my Ccleaner which I used on a regular basis. Morag.

Aunty says: These days most Antivirus software also try to protect against malware. So it may be your current antivirus is fine. Otherwise, yes install Anti-malware bytes. CCleaner is more of a system registry and system cleaner tool, than an antimalware tool.

Recovering problems DEAR AUNTY: Sometimes all goes sweetly but frequently I get the message ‘program (name) or website (name) is not responding’ with ‘recover website’ if a website followed by a long wait before anything happens or I give up and restart. If I click the ‘recover’ button a small window usually - but not always - opens saying that ‘Windows is trying to diagnose the problem’. Again sometimes the problem is fixed fairly rapidly but sometimes not. If you have any ideas I should be grateful to see them. Tony.

Aunty says: In many cases a ‘windows Explore’ crash can be down to a ‘plug in’ ‘add in’ or toolbar not working correctly, usually from a third party provider.

One of these may not be installed correctly, or conflicting with another program, or being blocked by antivirus / antimalware software.

You can see your ‘addins’ from the option in the IE10 Menu. However, even my IE10 frequency crashes with the same messages...which is why I tend to use other browsers like Chrome or Firefox.

I hope the newly released Internet Explorer 11 is better...

‘Cross the line’ only when you are ready It was Nick Faldo who said: “Ninety per cent of golf is in the mind. The other 10 per cent? That’s in the mind, too.”

IT IS no surprise that virtually all of the top professional golfers – and players in other individual sports – have mind coaches in their support teams.

For professional golfers, the game is their livelihood. Their chances of winning money are greatly improved by thinking only positive thoughts. It is different in the amateur game where there is little awareness of just how destructive negative thoughts can be.

Phrases such as: ‘I don’t like this course’; ‘I never get over that water hazard’; ‘I just can’t get out of bunkers’ – we’ve all heard these

excuses, or similar, at the start of a round.

This is called Destructive Self Talk – and is the reason why you can be virtually certain that those same people won’t enjoy their round; will go into the water they are trying to avoid; and make a hash of playing out of the first bunker they land in. What I want to explain to you here is how to avoid negative thoughts in the time leading up to striking the ball. First, we need to divide the game of golf into two parts – Thinking and Playing– and to illustrate this I place a length of ribbon on the ground to separate the two areas.

The Thinking area is one in which you visualise how you want the ball to fly. The Playing area is the one in which you will swing the club and strike the ball. While in the Thinking area, you need to ask yourself a number of questions because, before choosing the club you are going to use, you need to assess factors such as the distance you have to cover to reach your target, the speed and direction of the wind and the condition of the course. Then, and only then, when you think you have the answers, you should cross over to the Playing side of the line.

This is the time to go into a pre-shot routine of picking a target in the distance on which to line up, bringing that down to a point about a metre in front of the ball (a few centimetres in the case of a putt) addressing the ball and making the swing. And here’s an extra tip: make sure you are breathing! It’s surprising how many players hold their breath while gripping the club. This leads to tension in the big muscles, restricts movement and leads to a poor shot.

One final tip is to ‘live in the now’. For instance, if you have a good score going into the last few holes forget what’s gone before and don’t think about what lies ahead at the next hole. Focus only on the shot you are faced with.

People who move forward, particularly in golf, are the people who live in ‘the present’, able to close their mind to anything else.

Life cars Suzuki Grand Vitara Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer

THE WORD ‘grand’ is slowly creeping into motoring parlance. Only recently I tested the Chrysler Grand Voyager, which was certainly a large and capable people mover. So now I find myself confronted by another big vehicle, this time in the guise of the Suzuki Grand Vitara. It’s not as cumbersome as the Chrysler but the Japanese manufacturer uses the adjective to distinguish this large five-door model from the smaller three-door.

Now that I have two little daughters, each with bulky car seats, such sizeable vehicles have become increasingly appealing. Inside the Vitara there is plenty of room and the black leather interior is stylish and robust, like the vehicle in general.

With its burgundy finish and distinctive chrome Suzuki logo on the grille it is certainly eyecatching as you can see in the video at testdrives. biz. Dubbed a ‘soft roader’ Suzuki first introduced its rugged Grand Vitara in 1988, when I was still at school. Twenty-five years on and there are a plethora of 4x4s to choose from manufacturers that once shied away from this marketplace such as BMW, no doubt swayed by Suzuki’s success. And so it is somewhat gratifying to note that Suzuki has stuck to its guns with the model name and not decided to replace it or radically change the vehicle.

Externally this third generation model doesn’t really seem to have changed much at all although perhaps looking slightly bulkier and modern;

testament to a strong design in the first place. I wonder did Land Rover draw inspiration from this model for its Freelander? There do seem to be similarities in its styling.

The last time I drove a Grand Vitara it was fitted with a punchy but quite thirsty petrol engine. This time I am presented with a more frugal diesel unit. A decade ago it was hard to find a Suzuki with a diesel engine but now they are readily available across the whole range. The manufacturer claims that the 1.9 litre diesel unit fitted to this vehicle returns almost 40mpg and that it travels almost 400 miles on a tank.

A journey to Brighton allows me to put it through its paces and it proves to be a competent motorway cruiser with very little buffeting despite relatively high winds. The steering wheel mounted cruise control is easy to operate. In these days of six and seven speed gearboxes it is quite surprising to only have a five-speed manual but this low ratio version enables it to be far more productive off road, when required. This becomes useful when my oldest daughter

suddenly alerts us to the fact that she wants to go to the toilet. We happen to be passing a field and the gate is open so no better time to do a spot of off-roading and find a suitable venue.
