Killer dogs run riot

CROWDS PACKED the streets across Spain to witness the traditional Three Kings parades last Sunday evening. In Javea King Balthazar brought up the rear of the procession – and ended the official calendar of celebrations of Christmas for another year. For the full story turn to page 8.

GRIEVING PET owner Gillian Beynon told this week how a pack of hunting dogs killed a pet and savaged two others in a raid on her Costa Blanca home.

In a growing list of incidents involving wild dogs, the pack struck at the end of December and left the 77-year-old horrified and “traumatised”.

Gillian lives on the “foothills” of the Montgo Mountain Natural Park just outside Jesus Pobre where she said there had been a number of attacks on small animals.

And last month RTN reported how a woman living in the Covatelles area of Javea watched her pet cat carried off to a “horrific death” by a pack of hunting dogs.

Retired teacher Gillian, who bought her home in 1982 and has lived in Spain permanently since 1989, said it was time the authorities took action to end the threat of packs of dogs running wild.

And she warned parents and pet

owners to be on their guard against the menace of the dogs she described as “trained killers”.

Gillian was working on her computer and her gardener Barry chopping wood on Saturday 28th December when the pack struck – her pets Gracie, Amy and George, were in the garden along with Chico, a small dog she was looking after for friends.

HUNTING “These hunting dogs came down the mountain and Chico in his excitement jumped over the wall to play with them – I think he must have been killed almost immediately,” she said.

“I think after killing Chico they got a blood lust and they came back and jumped into the enclosed garden – Barry heard the noise and came running down – he found these three dogs up on the top terrace and one of the dogs was at Gracie’s throat, she was badly bitten.

continued from front page “The gardener dragged this podenco off – I have nothing against them but these were hunting dogs and trained killers – and Barry threw it over the fence and saved Gracie’s life.”

Gracie was rushed to a vets “bleeding profusely from the neck” and the incident reported to police. However, Gillian later noticed a second of her dogs, Amy, had been bitten in the stomach and was bleeding. “I have been washing blood away ever since; I have found blood all over the house.”

She described Chico as “a lovely, gorgeous little dog who adored life and was very much a free spirit” and added his Swiss owners found him in Malaga with a broken leg and adopted him, while she frequently looked after the pet as they were often away.

“It is worth stressing just how important pets are – I am a widow and elderly and have no children. My dogs are exceptionally valuable to me, both emotionally and as company,” said Gillian.

“For me to have a trauma of this nature is absolutely huge. It was reported to police by the vet and I am going to make a written complaint. Chico’s parents have begged me to report it.”

THREAT Gillian believes there is an ongoing threat from a pack of dogs left to run wild or simply let out to exercise - she said one of the hunting dogs was wearing a green collar as it indicated at least at some stage it had an owner.

“I think it is very significant as my dogs could have been children or children out walking a pet dog. It is a very positive danger,” she said.

“It is also significant that my dogs were in the garden and protected and this pack of dogs were the aggressors, deliberate aggressors, they didn’t accidently come into the garden.” She said Amy had recovered well from her injury, although she still had some concerns about Gracie. She also faced a large vet’s bill for their treatment and for the cremation of little Chico’s body.

“The authorities need to find out where these hunting dogs are coming from and who owns them,” said Gillian.

“They should not be running free in urban areas, it is terribly dangerous.

“Apart from the trauma I have suffered as an individual, they are a potential danger to not only children but Gillian adults as well. She added: “The police have to sort this with problem out. These dogs should not be allowed near ur(left) ban areas or let free to exercise anywhere near private Amy and Gracie domestic properties.”

Advertising invitation to burglars

By Jack Troughton CALPE RESIDENTS are angry a “crass” advertising promotion has become an open invitation to criminals looking to raid homes. Blue tabs were left hanging from the outside of letter boxes in one of the town’s urbanisations as a promotion for the private health company BUPA. The BUPA leaflets say ‘Enjoy!’ but residents the campaign is a senseless breach of security as they are a pointer to which homes are occupied and those standing empty.

Andrew Johnson told RTN: Now any local criminals just need to wait a couple of weeks to get an indication of which house might be vacant.

“Thank goodness our house is always occupied but absent owners should be worried.” He added: “The product being promoted might be very good – but come on BUPA, this must be one of the crassest bits of advertising ever.”

People choose town’s future PLANNERS ACROSS the world have drawn up projects to regenerate the historic centre of a Costa Blanca town – now residents can have their say and choose a favourite.

by Jack Troughton International architects and engineers were invited to submit plans for the Economic Social and Environmental Regeneration of Calpe and the town hall received over 150 applications.

And 75 were invited to submit proposals before the Alicante School of Architecture whittled the number down to 10. The projects are now on display in Calpe’s Casa de Cultura and before 31st January, the public has a unique chance to vote and the winner will receive a 50,000€ prize.

Many of the projects make use of the Mediterranean diet and Spanish food but there is much made of public transport to get people into pedestrian areas filled with shops and cafes and shaded seating.

One idea is to have a fix hot air balloon ride to take in the dramatic landscape surrounding the Marina Alta resort, but there are plans for moving walkways, Wi-Fi spot and even a ‘phone app to explain what is on offer and Calpe’s history.

HOLIDAY Councillor Carole Saunders, whose respon-

sibilities include citizen participation, agreed the majority of projects included food. “It’s what people want to do on holiday...eat!”

She said the iconic rock the Penon de Ifach was visited by over 250,000 people a year yet around 75% of visitors never visited the town or its many attractions.

“The idea of this project is to make the Old Town a true modern tourist destination and encourage people to bring their businesses into the area and therefore develop employment opportunities and generate money for the town,” said Mrs Saunders.

“This is a community project and we had applications from all over the world, from as far away as Japan. Tow German women architects submitted a project – their parents had visited Calpe years and years ago.”

One a winner had been selected, the project would be developed and a budget set aside.

“It is not something we can do overnight, you have to be practical, but this is investment in the future, making Calpe a 21st century town.”

She said to vote people needed to be aged 16 and over and be registered on the Padron.

“I want to emphasise we are looking to the future and brining visitors to the town to help the local economy.”

Alicante hotel industry disappointing performance despite AVE line THE LAUNCH of the high-speed Madrid-Alicante service on 16th June has not made a big enough impact on the hotel industry in Alicante. According to the Provincial Association of Alicante Hotels (APHA) the city drew an increase of 4,560 tourists since the AVE came to town; a disappointing performance compared with Benidorm’s 38,000.

The proposed AVE service to Benidorm was boycotted by Alicante Mayor Sonia Castedo – now proving a foolish decision.

Turtles head back home SIX ENDANGERED loggerhead turtles have successfully been returned to the sea from Denia marking the ongoing success of a conservation project in Valencia.

by Jack Troughton Since 1991, 320 of the world’s largest hardshelled turtle have been landed and taken to the La Granja Wildlife Recovery Centre at El Saler and around 90% are released, others chosen for a breeding programme.

Denia’s Mayor Ana Kringe and Alfredo Gonzalez, Director of the Valencia Government’s Medio Natural, were joined by an excited crowd on Les Albarenes Beach to watch the reptiles swim away.

For many it was their closest encounter with the species ‘Caretta caretta’ which can live for over 50 years and grow to over a metre in length and weigh more than 113kg.

Loggerheads travel the seas of the world but populations have declined because of pollution, fishing, and the destruction of nesting areas – females swim thousands of miles to lay their eggs on the beaches they hatched.

The turtles, which can swim up to 24km per hour, are mainly carnivores and eat jellyfish, conches, crabs, and fish. A group of turtles is known as a ‘flotilla’.

Denia Town Hall has reached an agreement with the town’s fishermen and the

government to alert the authorities and land stranded turtles so they can be cared for by experts.

Last year the protocol worked when a 56kg female was brought ashore and taken the centre – she is now part of a breeding programme.

Ms Kringe said the accord showed the commitment of all parties involved to the preservation of protected marine life and she said the highlighting of the problem – and the interest shown by the community – underlined “the high level of environmental awareness” amongst the people of Denia.

And Mr Gonzalez said the high level of success of the campaign to save loggerheads was thanks to the care they received at the wildlife centre.

“Especially important is the collaboration of fishermen in the collection of specimens stranded on our shores,” he said.

“Since 2007 this project with them to retrieve turtles accidently caught has been highly satisfactory.”

The majority of turtles taken to the centre have been accidently entangled in nets but the team has also had to deal with fishing hooks lodged in loggerheads’ throats, stomach or intestines.

Natural solutions

FLOCKS OF sheep and goats have returned the slopes of protected parkland in the Marina Alta to help provide a natural solution to the management of the beauty spot. The animals will graze areas of the Montgo Natural Park – which separates the coastal towns of Denia and Javea – under the watchful eye of a team of shepherds. The pilot scheme is said to be good for the environment and turns the clock back as many years ago the grazing of flocks was commonplace. Hungry animals will keep a series of firewalls clear, reducing the possible impact of a forest fire, and reduce the ‘carbon footprint’ of using modern machinery for the task.

Clifftop tragedy IN GALICIA on Monday three people of the same family were washed into the sea while they were scattering the ashes of a relative near the lighthouse at Frouxeira in Coruña.

by Jan Gamm Severe weather warnings had not deterred the family group of four from approaching the clifftop with their urn, in winds gusting at 90kph. A massive wave knocked them into the sea.

A 70-year-old woman survived the ordeal but the remaining three were washed into deep water. Local Mayor Jose Antonio Vigo confirmed that: “A search is supported by a ship and an aircraft from a rescue centre based at A Coruña. However, they are struggling against 40ft waves and 90kph winds so it will be very difficult to see anything down there.”

Arrests of suspected paedophiles

THE NATIONAL Police have arrested two men in Murcia and Valencia suspected of grooming more than 550 children through online social networks.

The men posed as children or young women and harassed many of their victims as they tried to persuade them to make contact. House searches were made and computer evidence confiscated as a result of one of the children filing a formal complaint.

Banks to be levied on empty properties

IT WAS announced on Sunday by the Secretary for Housing Carles Sala that the government is planning to levy a fee on banks that own empty properties. The tax will be based on the number of unoccupied square metres of property owned.

Sala said that the tax was not designed to generate revenue but rather to encourage banks to offer properties at favourable rents in collaboration with Social Services.

Kings’ star still shines THE TRADITIONAL ‘Three Kings’ celebration continues to tempt people out into the street to watch the annual procession through the streets.

by Jack Troughton The parades and the national holiday mark the end of the Christmas festivities for another year but their place on the Spanish calendar remains secure.

The power of television has promoted Christmas Day – or Christmas Eve – as the main event but the logic of the trio of the Orient bearing gifts and following a star holds true.

Many Spanish families will already have swapped gifts but token presents are still kept for 6th January – it is after all the twelfth day of Christmas.

Children are taken by their parents to watch the procession and the youngsters are armed with plastic bags to scoop up the sweets thrown by the kings and their respective entourages.

In Javea, Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar land at the harbour to make a stately procession through the streets. They then dismount and mount a stage with their pages to meet children patiently queuing for the honour.

However, the three have a second duty to perform the same evening; they also parade through the Old Town where another group of children are just as excited and waiting to meet them.

And while symbolic gifts are carried on horseback, a religious aspect dating back to the first Christmas is also in the parade – in the form of Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus at the stable.

The Kings make an unusual entrance in Alicante HUNDREDS OF people gathered to see King Gaspar on his journey from the Port in Alicante to the Bullring on Saturday were shocked when His Majesty’s vintage car rammed into a wall of the fire station. Its brakes failed on a slope on Avda Jaime II and the driver crashed into the wall to avoid hitting pedestrians! King Gaspar was unhurt and completed his journey with Balthazar and Melchor - the evening ended well, with local children delighted to receive their gifts and sweets. A splendid and magical parade featuring Disney characters such as the Little Mermaid and Dumbo concluded the celebrations.

Lords debate EU question THE CONTROVERSIAL bill calling for a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union is debated in the House of Lords this morning (Friday) with expats closely watching its progress through parliament.

by Jack Troughton THE EUROPEAN Union (Referendum) Bill would enshrine in law Prime Minister David Cameron’s pledge to stage an ‘in/out’ vote by the end of 2017.

However, expats who have taken up their right to freedom of movement within Europe and face an uncertain future regarding their status if the UK left Europe would have no automatic voice in the referendum.

The Cabinet Office has already confirmed to campaign group Votes For Expat Brits that the franchise for the key vote will not be extended to expats disqualified from a ballot in British elections under the 15 year rule.

Campaigners maintain it is a key example of why British expats should retain a vote and be represented Parliament.

Tory MP James Wharton has steered the bill through the Commons and has accused Labour and Liberal Democrats of a conspiracy to block its onward passage despite its high-profile support amongst conservative leadership.

“Having tried and failed to block the Referendum Bill in the Commons, labour and the Lib Dems are once again conspiring to stop the British people having a say,” he said.

“Fundamentally, they don’t trust the British people and once again, the Conservatives will be the only party fighting to get this Bill through and give the British public the referendum they deserve.”

In the Lords the Bill is sponsored by Lord Dobbs – author Michael Dobbs who wrote the celebrated satire on Parliament ‘House of Cards’.

STATUTE The backbench proposed legislation needs

to be returned to the Commons by the end of February in a race against time to reach the statute books because of time restrictions on Private Members’ Bills.

The debate can be watched via the internet and is due to begin at 11am Central European Time. The link is www.parlikamentlive.tv/Main/Live.aspx Campaigner Brian Cave said there had been some contact with Lord Dobbs and “at heart” the peer seemed to believe expats should have some form of representation.

“If this Bill gets Royal Assent, then it will be necessary to draw attention to the situation in the EU Commission’s Department of Justice and the rights of the Citizen. The democratic opinion of those most affected – the Briton in Europe – will not be sought,” said Brian.

“It is anticipated that other peers will draw attention to the defects of the Bill and it will probably be delayed and never get finalised.

But one cannot count on that!”

He underlined how a referendum could take the UK out of Europe. He added it could mean State Pensions could be frozen or limited, health support for British pensioners could cease, and the winter fuel allowance would “certainly” end.

“All Britons would be foreigners in the EU, with no right of free movement in the European continent,” said Brian.

Plastic pooches please!

A MATE of ours has come up with the perfect solution to people with dogs being a continual source of aggravation to non dog owners. The type of dog owners I refer to is not the conscientious ones but the ones that are quite the opposite.

YOU KNOW the kind I mean. The owners who walk several streets from their own property to use public parks as a dog toilet. The owners who look the other way, pretending to not know what is happening as their dog dumps right on the street where other people walk and do not clean it up. The owners who leave their dog at their property as they go on errands or out for the evening, and of course their dog barks and howls, thus bothering all the neighbours.

The solution as alluded to at the start is to have plastic, life sized dogs with wheels on them so the dog owners can drag them around pretending they are taking them for a walk. This

would insure no more dog dumping in our parks and no more barking and bothering the neighbours. The government would of course still require a yearly dog licence tax for the plastic muts. Airlines could charge extra to the plastic dog owners to bring their plastic pooches on their airplanes. Veterinarians could still make hefty profits providing pretend rabbi shots for the plastic pooches. For the owners peace of mind they could still take their plastic pooches to the vet for monthly check ups, depending on the plastic dog’s ages of course. Plastic pooches please!

No tears for ‘poor’ taxi drivers!

DO NOT shed any more tears for the ‘poor’ taxi drivers who reckon they cannot make a living! Last week two friends and my wife and I plus a small dog visited Valencia to see ‘Les Miserables’. We had arranged to stay overnight at an Ibis Hotel as they accept pets. After booking in we decided to visit a local shopping centre and the hotel reception rang for a taxi which came and took the four of us plus dog. When it was time to return there were about 10 taxis standing in line waiting for fares. We asked each one if they would accept a dog and all refused.

We then could have split up two going by taxi and two walking with the dog.

However, we all decided to walk and there sat a line of taxis having just missed four fares. By the way Toby stayed in the hotel when we went to the show.

I HAVE just perused the latest edition of RTN and greatly enjoyed the creative writing contest and winning stories accompanied by the excellent cartoons by your resident cartoonist Carter McKeague. What a smashing way to start the New Year.

The stories from the various age groups I found surprisingly very good and certainly much better than anything I could ever write.

Could RTN possibly have more such writing contests for I am sure many of your readers would greatly enjoy the talented stories and the accompanying cartoons -the readership of RTN would most assuredly increase!

The stories coupled with the cartoons certainly give RTN a decided edge over all the other local newspapers.

Gumtree sadness I READ with sadness about the gentleman who was robbed while using ‘Gumtree’ - this is one of the reasons I will not use this system. To me it would seem easier if Gumtree set up a bank so that buyers who want to buy using their services could put their monies into this account. Then when the buyer receives the goods and is happy he or she could contact Gumtree to release the monies to the seller using a password that way everyone is protected and Gumtree’s reputation would be improved. This may not be the perfect answer and other readers could see faults in this but it is only a thought and for anything like this to work Gumtree would have to accept it and implement it.

Valencia to sue architect of Arts and Science complex

by Jan Gamm STAR ARCHITECT Santiago Calatrava could face legal action from the city of Valencia as the City of Arts and Sciences complex (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias) experiences serious structural problems only eight years after completion. Christmas performances scheduled to take place within the iconic space-age building had to be cancelled when huge pieces of the mosaic frontage fell off in strong winds.

The Valencia born Calatrava was paid an enormous fee of €100 million for the billion euro project that completed a staggering four times over budget.

The regional government spokesman responsible for Arts and Culture, Maximo Buch, has announced that Valencia is to pursue legal action against Mr Calatrava and his architectural firm for the cost of repairs. Calatrava was also paid €15 million for a The City of Arts project to build three skyscrapers and eight residenand tial blocks, shelved in 2008. Mr Calatrava’s offices in Sciences New York and Zurich are not responding to calls. complex

DON JUAN Carlos celebrated his 76th birthday on Sunday in private, still recovering from a hip operation undertaken in November. The King’s public image has deteriorated considerably over the past two years. In the first three months of 2012, almost 80% of Spaniards had a positive opinion of the King but now 62% of polled Spanish citizens believe King Juan Carlos should abdicate in favour of Crown Prince Felipe: 56% of those surveyed believe Prince Felipe would put in a better performance as monarch.

I HEARD a strange story on the “…and finally” bit of the news which I initially thought was an early April fool’s gag.

But no, it turned out to be completely true and it made me feel bad that I’d chuckled so heartily. The story concerns a Canadian lady named Sharon Campbell-Rayment who was knocked unconscious falling from her horse. She sustained a slight head injury in the fall but that was not all. Because when she finally came around she wasn’t speaking in her normal Canadian drawl but in a Scottish voice.

Although Sharon has never set foot in Scotland she’s now developed a strong accent and has started to pepper her sentences with such Caledonian colloquialisms as ‘wee’ and ‘grand’. The 50-year-old, mother-of-two, from Ontario is set to write a book about her vocal anomaly. She told the BBC: “Doctors have said I might have the Scottish accent for the rest of my life, or it might just disappear overnight but I don’t think it’s going anywhere fast.”

Sharon has been being diagnosed with the extremely rare, Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS). No, no I kid you not. Okay, here’s the potted history: “Foreign Accent Syndrome is a rare medical condition in which patients develop what appears to be a foreign accent.

FAS usually results from a stroke but can also develop from head trauma, migraines or developmental problems. Between 1941 and 2009 there have been sixty-two recorded cases.” Hmmm, so this is all true and not just one of those Ronnie Barker ‘Malapropism’ sketches where people “seem to get their worms mixed up…”

I suppose as we’re all capable of learning all lan-

guages, we must similarly be capable of reproducing a question. So I wonder if he’s got mild FAS? all accents. Quick, give me a slight blow to the head so Anyway, I’m being rude and ignoring Sharon, so that I might develop the husky Nordic tone of the guy let’s head back to Canada. Mind you, having been in the Midlands for a while I’m losing my rather cultured RP accent. These days I seem to go to work on a ‘bouz’ rather than a bus. And, more alarmingly, I’ve dropped the affected ‘ah’ in castle, grass, glass and class. And that’s without ever falling orf me ’orse!

For another example, take the case of my kid brother.

Now, Mark (or Maaak as he’s known nowadays) has been an Australian for nearly twenty years and he sounds more and more like Croc Dundee every day - complete with the rising inflection. Everything he says, apparently, is Sharon Campbell-Rayment

by Jack Troughton GRATEFUL MEMBERS of Women In Business have started the challenges of 2014 by thanking people on the Costa Blanca for their support over the last 12 months.

While primarily a networking club for women involved in local businesses, WIB is also dedicated to raising cash to support the victims of domestic violence – many members join just for the charity side - helping women and children living in places of safety in the Marina Alta.

Fund raising events include November’s White Ribbon Day, when victims of gender violence are remembered and the annual International Women’s Day in March.

President of WIB Maria Verrechia-Norman told RTN: “Thanks to the public who attend and the stall-holders, entertainers and others who make these events so popular, we have been able to donate help to so many people in 2013.”

She said for years the club had helped look after one refuge in association with charity Friends of the Children of EMAUS, and over the last three years WIB had supported a refuge in Pedregeur and an emergency 48-hour shelter in El Vergel.

“In 2013 we have also supplied new furniture for the Altea shelter, along with a swimming pool and Astro turf for Pedregeur and many other much-needed items.”

DIRECT Maria said direct aid also included helping as new mum register her baby and his passport, providing a pram, a christening gown and new clothes for the infant.

She added: “The women and children who arrive at the shelters, often in the middle of the night and accompanied by officers of the Guardia Civil, have very little with them – WIB provides new underwear, clothing, and essentials.

“As the crisis hit, the Altea shelter’s cupboard was bare, so WIB began food shopping and paid for pharmacy bills for the residents.”

And Maria said the association had also donated to the Harvest Store in Javea which supports needy families and donated to the Calpe Food Bank. In addition 880 new pairs of shoes were supplied to children in the Denia shelter along with other much-needed supplies.

“We could not have done it without the help of the public, our members and friends,” she explained. “Special thanks go to the Be-

nitachell Charity Shop, the Ladies Luncheon Club of Teulada Moraira, Monroe’s Carvery in Pedregeur, the Knit and Natter group in Benitachell, who also made hand-knitted gifts for the children and mums.

“Ladies and children’s new clothes, underwear and toiletries were also gratefully received along with financial donations... thank-you all, we look forward to seeing you at our events this year.”

Soup kitchen for pets!

ALICANTE COUNCIL is to offer free food and veterinary treatments for pets belonging needy families. It has been estimated that it costs a minimum of 550€ per year to keep a pet in food, worm treatments, vaccinations and other expenses. As families are left with few resources in the economic crisis more pets are being abandoned or left in shelters. To help alleviate the problem, the Municipal Animal Shelter has launched a new programme – an animal food bank combined with a veterinary service. Pets of those families recommended by social services will be able to receive free food and veterinary treatment. It is hoped that the project will help to reduce the number of abandoned animals on the streets and also the spread of disease amongst strays.

THE MAYOR of Alicante, Sonia Castedo, now five months pregnant, is a great fan of social networks – so much so that she has posted an ultrasound scan of her unborn child due in April, on Facebook, accompanied by the caption: “I present my little Carla.” The post has so far received more than 7,000 visits. Castedo’s pregnancy became public last October when she had to delegate her mayoral duties for several weeks on doctor’s orders. The 42-year-old Mayor already has a 12-year-old daughter.

BENIDORM IS to be promoted within British rugby league matches to attract tourists to Spain’s most popular tourist destination. Benidorm’s Councillor for Tourism, Gema Amor, explained that the strategy is part of an increase in investment to be made in the British media following excellent results last year. The campaign is scheduled for the first quarter of the year within certain target areas such as Newcastle, East Midlands, Glasgow, Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester.

Developing a great Spanish garden by

HOW DOES your garden stack up? Apart from the swimming pool terrace how much use of the garden did you make last summer? Does the garden take maximum advantage of the Mediterranean climate we experience? If not here is a basic framework for a garden that matches an outdoor life style with the garden developed as the main room of the house for most months of the year.

A BASIC FRAMEWORK The following framework can be used as the basis for improving an existing garden or starting from scratch and matches and enables an outdoor lifestyle for most of the year by, amongst other things, providing for summer shade and sheltered winter sun. Only with these can a Spanish garden become the most used room of the house.

An attractive and interesting network of terraces and paths: terraces of different sizes for different activities such as cooking and entertaining, secluded siestas, sunning after a dip in the pool or a quiet winter’s read. Pathways should lead one from one attractive part of the garden to another, opening up both internal and external vistas en route. Curving rather than straight paths and the use of a

variety of surfaces can add to the magic of a new garden even before the first plants are planted.

A number of interesting and contrasting mini gardens, patios or corners: the pool area should be treated as one of several mini gardens rather than the only feature of the garden. If you only use it for five or six months a year why stare at it day in day out throughout the year?

A variety of colour schemes in different parts of the garden can use plantings with the many hues and textures of green foliage as well as the subtle or blazing colours of the flowers. Our book ‘Your Garden in Spain – Planning Planting and Maintenance’ includes an important chapter in this respect – Chapter 2 ‘Painting with plants’.

With the generally benign climate an amazing range of flowering plants, fruit and vegetables can be grown provided the soil is first improved. But do be creative in how you group the flowering plants and integrate the growing of fruit and vegetables.

To use plants with interesting architectural shapes carefully site groups of palm trees; cordylines; cacti and aloes or green or purple-leaved aeoniums for an effective bank of flowering shrubs.

Provide perfume throughout the year as one passes through the entrance gate and around the garden.

Favourites include jasmines, roses, honeysuckles, galan de noche, san diego, frangipani, mock orange, citrus trees, freesias, lilies, passion flowers, sweet peas, geraniums and – naturally - culinary and medicinal herbs.

The growing of a variety of herbs for use in cooking as well as for their natural aromatherapeutic and medicinal effects may be grouped in a herb garden or on a rockery or spread around the garden in mixed beds.

The traditional Spanish sound of dripping water from a fountain, the running water of a waterfall into or between ponds or a creative mini water feature is a spectacular addition. Solar pumps allow features to be located anywhere in the garden without expensive wiring systems.

Tastefully select and place ornaments and groups of pots with some of the latter left empty and others planted up.

Even just a few seasonal vegetables can be grown for harvesting and eating fresh, especially if grown ecologically.

A range of beneficial wildlife ranging from geckoes on the walls at night that catch flying insects to lizards on rocks and frogs and dragonflies around a pond can add interest.

“Triple lock” is it pension security? Protect yourself now RECENT NEWS from the UK shows David Cameron talking about a “triple lock” approach for pensions. If the Tories win the next election, they will guarantee to increase the state pension every year in line with whichever is the highest of inflation, average earnings or a baseline of 2.5 per cent.

The Pensions Minister, also says he wants the elderly to be allowed to switch to better-paying annuities. At present, many people are exploited by a market that is complicated, packed with hidden charges, and discourages people from shopping around for a better deal. It’s been calculated that some consumers could have raised their pension incomes by more than 20 per cent if they had only purchased their annuities from a different insurer.

Expats have a unique opportunity to

manage their pensions in a way that allows them to gain enormous tax benefit and improve their income. This is through transferring their pensions in to a QROP, this form of pension management allows greater control for the individual and takes away some of the risk associated with maintaining pensions in UK companies where there is already a massive acknowledged pension fund deficit.

The size of this deficit means that some funds will just be incapable of paying out people’s entitlements. Could this happen to you? How would you manage on a basic state pension?

The fact is that welfare costs now amount to a quarter of all public spending, and around half of the welfare bill is pensions. As the population ages, this expense increases, becoming a challenge passed down from one

Spanish wills for all worldwide assets by

MY WIFE and I are British nationals, although we have lived in Spain for many years now. We have now decided to make our Spanish Wills, as it is here where most of our assets are located. For this reason we would like to know if we can grant Spanish Wills including our assets abroad. Can this be done with all legal guarantees and without worrying that this could lead to problems in the future?

WE HAVE previously pointed out that owners of properties situated in Spain should grant their Spanish Wills as this means significant advantages and reductions of the costs involved, such as simplifying the formalities of the Spanish Inheritance Process, e.g. no need to wait for documents from your home country; no need to translate and apostille them in order to make them legally valid in Spain.

Also you should know that it is possible to include your assets located outside Spanish territory in your Spanish Will.

In cases like yours, when the most part of the assets are located in Spain and for example, you only keep a bank account in your home country, this would be a

particularly interesting option.

We advise you to enclose all your assets in your Spanish Will and use this document granted in Spain to process the inheritance in your home country. When it comes to the moment, your heirs will be able to obtain official recognition by means of the Probate without relevant problems, our experience shows us.

Under certain circumstances, we think it is not advisable to include your assets situated abroad. This would be the case, if for example, you use formulas for tax-savings or you want to arrange a complicated Will appointing as beneficiary a trust which is a legal entity not recognised in Spain, etc.

So, certain dispositions which are completely usual in your country may complicate the drafting,

interpretation and execution of your Spanish Will.

Therefore, in view of everything said before, please note that in most cases it is not only possible, but also advisable to make a Spanish Will for your assets in Spain and abroad. Infanta Cristina formally summoned

IT WAS announced on Tuesday that Judge Castro has formally summoned the 48-year-old Infanta Cristina to answer charges of fraud and money-laundering connected with her business partnership with her husband the Duke of Palma in a company called ‘Aizoon’. A hearing is set for 8th March despite repeated statements from the princess that she had no knowledge of her husband’s business affairs or alleged embezzlement of public funds from the Noos Institute. In a 227-page investigative report it is alleged that the princess applied her name to a number of documents precisely to deter scrutiny of the dealings in which she and her husband were 50/50 partners.

In response to the summons the royal household said that it had “…maximum respect for judicial decisions.”

Newsletter to non-resident RTN readers NON-RESIDENTS who own a property are subject to non-resident state tax.

THIS IS nothing to do with the Suma bill if you are in the Comunidad Valenciana - which is a local Town Hall tax on the property.

Many non-residents either choose to ignore this issue or they are unaware of the need to do this - incorrectly thinking a UK tax return suffices. As a non-resident, if you own a property in Spain you are automatically liable for the Property Owners Imputed Tax. You must make your annual tax return for your Spanish tax liabilities by 31st December every year. If you are late submitting, you can pay a surcharge on it.

The non-resident is taxed always at the flat rate of 24.75 % on any income arising in Spain. Do

not confuse this tax with the capital gains tax of 21%, which applies to profits from the sale of assets, such as a house or shares in a company.

If a non-resident husband and wife own a villa with a valor catastral of 120,000€ and a real value of 180,000€ the Spanish Tax Agency imputes to each of them an ownership of 60,000€, half of the valor catastral. 1.1% of 60,000€ is 660€ - taxed at 24.75%, this gives a bill of 163.35€ per person. Many think this is a huge tax because the amount of 24.75% is sometimes mentioned.

But that is the amount levied on 1.1% of your property’s catastral value - so typically the final tax due might be quite small.

Additionally if you have been letting the property to either short term, (i.e. holiday lets) or

long term that income is taxable in Spain. Taxes on rentals are in fact due quarterly.

We can advise Non-Residents of their tax liabilities as well as advise on all other issues such as inheritance tax planning and the best way for you to setup a will. Properly organised planning of your affairs could save your partner of relatives many future problems.

Mind your language: embargoes by

THERE ARE examples of words in Spanish and English that sound the same but have a different meaning. In some cases these differences can cause amusement.

FOR EXAMPLE in the case of ‘embarazada’ – it might sound a little like ‘embarrassed’ and you will be if you use it incorrectly - its real meaning is ‘pregnant!’

The difference in the meaning of the word ‘embargo’ is actually quite small but significant. Generally, if you speak to someone from the UK and talk about an embargo it will conjure up images of an international dispute with perhaps one country blocking trade with another. What they are unlikely to think is that an embargo might happen to them.

In Spain the use of the word ‘embargo’ is a lot more widespread and it doesn’t just refer to international boycotts. Instead it might be your property or bank account that can find itself subject to one. If it’s your

bank account then what it means in practice is that your account will be frozen without your permission.

Again, a concept that is unusual for those coming from the UK. Who would do such a thing?

An embargo might be placed on your account when you have an outstanding debt. It could be a missed mortgage repayment, a personal loan you’ve defaulted on, non-resident taxes or IBI property tax that remains unpaid.

It comes in the form of either a court order or from a government public administration office, such as the tax office (Agencia Tributaria). A private individual or a company can take an outstanding debt to court.

Whilst a decision is made about how the debt will be settled, the judge will freeze your account. In the case of a government department, there is no need to go

to court. Your account can be frozen and you may not even realise that you owe any money!

The debt might be settled by money being taken out of your account directly. If there is insufficient money there to cover the debt, then assets can be seized, including property, pensions or even jewellery.

It sounds harsh, and it is. Even more so when you consider that if your account is frozen your bills will not be paid. This can lead to services being disconnected with all the additional costs and inconvenience.

We don’t want to start the New Year with too much gloom. Good housekeeping, in most cases, will prevent this from happening. Knowing how things work in Spain, along with the language, can help prevent more than just embarrassment.

A SHORT movie is being made by Nakamura Films centred on the story of Benidorm mayor Pedro Zaragoza, who travelled all the way from Benidorm to Madrid in 1953 on a Vespa to make an appeal to General Franco to allow bikinis to be worn on Benidorm’s beaches.

By Jan Gamm THE MOVIE ‘Bikini: A True Story’ stars popular actor Sergio Castellon Caballero taking the role of the colourful Zaragoza, who was determined to put Benidorm on the tourist map.

FINE When a fine was imposed by a Spanish policeman in 1952 on a British tourist wearing a two-piece swimsuit, Zaragoza knew something had to be done. And he took quite a risk with his cheeky defiance of the proprieties in grey, puritan and stoutly Catholic fifties Spain, daring to confront Franco’s policies and even risking excommunication to secure Benidorm’s future as Spain’s top tourist destination.

Yet defy them all he certainly did with his eight-hour scooter trek to the seat of power, returning triumphantly to Benidorm with Franco’s decree tucked under his arm – the

rubber stamp on beachwear freedom that would change Benidorm’s fortunes forever.

VISIONARY Oscar Bernàcer, producer and director of Nakamura Films said: “My father told me the story of the visionary Pedro Zaragoza and how he changed the future of Benidorm by persuading Franco to legalise the bikini!” In the interests of accuracy Bernácer interviewed a number of locals including the children of Zaragoza.

Sergio Caballero has been rehearsing (complete with Vespa!) in the city and also on location in El Pardo: “It’s an exciting story that explains

the development of Benidorm through the dedication of one man,” he said.

Festive food supply NEEDY FAMILIES in Calpe were able to buy fresh food over the Christmas holiday period thanks to a 30 Euro supermarket voucher from the town’s Food Bank.

by Jack troughton THE CHARITY Shop of Calpe donated 3,000€ in the form of 100 of the Mas y Mas vouchers to help the most needy buy supplies.

The shop volunteers also raised 1,200€ with their Christmas raffle and the money was shared between a number of good causes in Calpe.

And to help celebrate the traditional Spanish celebration of Three Kings, the charity shop team purchased presents for the youngsters living in the EMAUS home in Calpe.

President of the shop, John Bridge wished customers and supporters a Happy New Year and said: “Christmas is a difficult time of year for families and children who have very little and it is great that we can bring a bit of happiness to those most in need.”

The shop in Galerias Mar Azul half way up the Avenida Gabriel Miro, on the right hand side of the street, is now open after the holiday period.

Life Showbiz Goss New Scorsese movie tops the PM charts B4 release!

MARTIN SCORSESE was born in New York in 1942 and as a teenager attended the film school at the City’s University and made his first short film in 1963 called ‘What’s a Nice Girl Like you Doing in a Place Like This’ (love the title). He is now of course a top man in the business with ‘Raging Bull’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ two of his big movies. His latest film stars Leonardo Di Caprio and is called ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ and will go on general release in Europe later this month.

But this item is not the main feature in the column, just to let you know about a movie coming out, but is to do with the results of somebody somewhere going to an awful lot of trouble to sit down and watch the film and count the number of times the ‘F’ word appears in the dialogue.

I routed out the top five ‘sweariest’ films and Scorsese is in at No 3 with ‘Casino’ in 1995 which had 398 of those words; Gary Oldman’s directorial debut ‘Nil by Mouth’ is in second place with 428 and Spike Lee’s ‘Summer of Sam’ was No1 with that word featuring 435 times. The key words here of course being … was No1 … as ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ uses the ‘F’ word an astonishing 506 times, and goes straight in at number one in ‘The Potty Mouth Charts’.

I am far from a prude when it comes to saying stuff like damn and blast for example, and can go with the need for a level of authenticity, but with that many ‘F’s in there I can’t imagine there’s a scene without somebody being told to … “Get t´ ****!!”

Race tracks and bulls tarts FOR SUCH a small town hovering just off the motorway a short drive from Valencia, Cheste has three major sporting venues; the motor racing track, Circuito de Velocidad Ricardo Tormo; the Valencian Community’s hunting grounds, said to be one of the best in Europe; and the regional Archery centre, used for national championships.

THE CIRCUIT was opened in September 1999 and is named after one of Cheste’s most famous son’s, Ricardo Tormo, twice motorcycle world champion, who died less than a year before it’s opening, sadly of leukaemia.

Prior to the opening of the track, probably the most notable event to have happened in Cheste’s recent history was in 1864, when a collection of coins and gold and silver artefacts dating from the Iberian period were found just outside the town. Not surprisingly it became known as the Tesoro de Cheste, the Treasure of Cheste.

The restoration bug has hit Cheste in a reasonably big way. In the main square, the Plaza del Dr Cajal, the Fuente del Ayuntamiento, designed in 1802 by Vicente Marzo, president of the Real Academia de Bellas Arts de Valencia, spouts forth in front of the elegant town hall.

Keeping it company is the splendidly ornate Sindicato Agricola y Caja Rural, the town casino (a kind of gentlemen’s club where the town’s solid citizens socialise) with its sinuously curving Modernista wrought iron work and colourful tiled panels showing agricultural abundance. Sadly, the interior is rather a let down.

The Chestanos are said to be very proud of the hexagonal bell tower of the Iglesia de San Lucas Evangelista. At 51 metres, it matches that of the Micalet tower of Valencia’s cathedral. In 1982, the church was declared a Monument of National Artistic Interest, and has been completely restored, with its rich cream stonework glowing as if it were completed last year and not in 1770. High above the main doorway cherubs perch precariously, praying on a high pointed pediment, while to the left of the main alter is a mural attributed to the 18th Century artist, José Vergara (or one of his students).

Unfortunately, the charm of the church is somewhat marred by the appalling 80’s apartment block that sits beside it, but the Modernista façade of the building that houses the Salon de Te Verdi, opposite, helps restore the ambience of the plaza, and you can nip in to try some of the home-made local specialities such as Tortas de Toros, small pastries with raisins and nuts, or Testaminos, made with sugar, flour, and egg yolk and occasionally with an assortment of fillings such as chopped almonds.

The municipal market, sensibly placed in the Plaza Mercado, is currently under restoration, so as you approach, it looks as if it is derelict; it isn’t, half is working while half is being restored – a very sensible approach.

Tucked behind it, the Ermita de la Virgen de la Soledad Gloriosa, named after the town’s patron saint, was originally built in 1573, but has been considerably restored since, as witnessed by the numerous plaques signifying its various face lifts. Most notable amongst these is the medallion just below the twin bells that informs the public in bold 3D lettering that the façade of the church was restored in 1904 at the expense of one José Rodrigo Martinez. In such manner do the rich pave their way to heaven...

To the side of the market the rickety hand-made sign for the long closed Cine Goya – a building that looks more like a barn with balconies than a centre of entertainment – recalls a time long before the onset of 16-screen multicines when every tiny village had its own cinema.

As you wander the streets take a glance at some of the tiled side panels that frame the front doors of many of the Modernista houses. In fact the town has maintained quite a lot of architectural gems, although the town architect in the ‘70’s and 80’s has something to answer for. Fortunately most of the new developments, at least in the town itself, seem to be in keeping with the original styles. One oddity is the police station, a combination of public building, garage, water tower and public broadcast system all in one.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Basic forms of sentence building MANY PEOPLE who study Spanish get upset by those terrible things called verbs. They quickly discover that they are rather complicated, and they often find themselves sinking into a mire of grammatical terms that they don’t really understand. It is certainly true that verbs are more complicated in Spanish than in English, but they are understandable if we take them step by step.

The first step is to be absolutely certain that we know what a verb is. Many of us have learnt quite correctly that they are “doing” words, such as “to run”, “to jump”, “to play” and so on. They can also include words that do not exactly express an action, but rather a kind of state, such as “to own”, “to have”, “to believe”, “to intend”. This form of the verb which in English usually starts with the word “to” is called the “infinitive”. It is the basic form of the verb before any changes are made to it.

The reason why it is so important to learn verbs is because they are what make sense of a sentence. If I say something like “The boy the ball” I don’t make any sense. If I say “the boy hits, (or throws, or steals, or loses, or likes) the ball”, then I have made a meaningful sentence. “To hit”, “to throw”, “to steal”, “to lose” and “to like” are all verbs.

Now we are going to learn six verbs in Spanish to get us started. You will notice that all of them end in either “–ar”, “-er”, or “–ir.” All Spanish verbs have one of these three endings when they are in their “infinitive” form; that is the equivalent of the “to ...” form in English.

CAMBIAR (to change) HABLAR (to speak) BEBER (to drink) VOLVER (to return) VIVIR (to live) DORMIR (to sleep) You may have learnt in your Spanish classes, or noticed for

yourself, that the endings of Spanish verbs often alter. When this happens it is to produce a change in meaning, generally connected to “when” an action occurs and “who” is producing the action of the verb. However, not everyone learns early on that there is a great deal that can be done with verbs in their “infinitive” form. We can make simple sentences with them without any changes being made at all.

In order to do this we are now going to learn three more words (they are also verbs but that doesn’t matter for now) which can combine with our infinitive verbs to make simple sentences. I call them “first person” words because they are words about “I”, and “I” in grammar is called the “first person”: QUIERO (I want) NECESITO (I need) PUEDO (I can) There is a separate word for “I” in Spanish which is “yo”, but when we are forming sentences we usually miss the word “yo” out, so that the one word “quiero” means “I want” and so on.

We now already know enough to link these two words, that is, the “first person” word and the “infinitive” of the verb to make instant “mini-sentences”. For example: QUIERO VOLVER (I want to return) NECESITO DORMIR (I need to sleep) PUEDO HABLAR (I can speak) QUIERO VIVIR (I want to live) NECESITO BEBER (I need to drink) PUEDO CAMBIAR (I want to change) Even at this stage you may well be able to add other words you already know to make the sentences more meaningful. For example: NECESITO BEBER AGUA (I need to drink water) QUIERO DORMIR MUCHO (I want to sleep a lot) PUEDO

CAMBIAR DINERO (I can change money).

If you try out some different combinations just with these words, you will already be well on the way to being able to form some very useful basic sentences. If you learn some more “infinitive” verbs, you can expand your range of possibilities even further. Here are six more to learn: TRABAJAR (to work) COCINAR (to cook) BAILAR (to dance) APRENDER (to learn) COMER (to eat) ABRIR (to open) Something else we should know about these infinitive verbs is that when they are pronounced, the “emphasis” or “beat” of the word falls onto the ending “ar”, “er”, “ir” which are shorter sounds than most English people assume. Remember as well that the “j” of trabajar has a throaty “h” sound, the second “c” in “cocinar” has a “th” sound and the “ai” of “bailar” is pronounced like the English word “I” or “eye”. These sounds are all dictated by specific rules of pronunciation which are rather difficult to explain in more detail in written form. Now let’s see if you can create some more “mini-sentences” in Spanish. Here are some in English for you to think about.

I want to work.

I need to cook.

I can dance.

I need to learn Spanish. I want to eat more.

I can open the door.

I think it would be rather good for you to work these out for yourselves before next week, and also make up some more small sentences using the principles we have learnt. Remember that we are only talking in the first person “I” form at the moment.

Another thing you might have noticed is that in most cases the Spanish use fewer words to express the same idea, which is amazing when you think how much they like to speak!

By Jack Troughton TICKETS ARE now on sale for the Footlights Youth Theatre’s performances of the legendary musical West Side Story and a modern reworking of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The show was a smash hit when it opened on Broadway in 1957 and later in London – while the 1961 film won 10 Oscars from 11 nominations, including Best Picture.

Following the sensational success of last year’s ‘Cats’, the Footlight’s youngsters delve into life on New York’s Upper West Side, a blue-collar neighbourhood and the rivalry between two teenage street gangs; the

Polish-American Jets and the Puerto Rican members of the Sharks. Tensions run into conflict after Tony, a leading light in the Jets, falls for Maria, whose brother is the leader of the opposing Sharks.

The show runs from Thursday 13th to Saturday 15th at Calpe’s Casa de Cultura, home turf for Footlights, and on 22nd February can be seen at the Teatro Municipal, Torrevieja. A final performance is scheduled for 7th March at the Auditori in Teulada.

Max’s mad world of music

By Jack Troughton TALENTED TEENAGER Max Okhuijsen is taking time out after exam success to follow his dream of becoming a full-time musician.

The singer and guitarist left Xabia International College last year with four A Levels and pressing the pause button on an immediate career choice is pursuing his love of music.

Dutch-born Max is already winning a following across the Costa Blanca and has put his first video on You Tube – a haunting version of ‘Mad World’, first a hit for Tears for Fears and successfully covered by Gary Jules 20 years later.

His version of the song, which has already scored a massive volley of ‘hits’ on the internet, can be seen on You Tube at ‘Max Milian, Mad World’ or via his Facebook page Max Milian.

Hold the yogurt!

STUDIES INTO the properties of pro-biotic yogurts such as Danone Activia by French biologist and research scientist Didier Raoult and his team claim to have revealed that, far from being beneficial such products might be at the root of obesity problems, especially for children, in France and other countries with similar diets.

By Jan Gamm RESEARCH SHOWS that obesity in linked with a reduction in Gram-negative bacteria, specifically members of the Bacteroidetes, and increased Firmicutes1 Gram-positive bacteria.

It has also been shown that the intestinal microbiota of obese individuals is less diverse than non-obese.

Manipulating the intestinal microbiota - by the administration of probiotics and antibiotics - has been used to stimulate growth in farm animals for 50 years, regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States and by the Commission European Europe.

In other words, such products are used to ‘fatten’ livestock such as poultry, calves and pigs for the food market!

POPULARITY Foods containing probiotics have gained popularity worldwide and are marketed under the ‘health eating’ umbrella. And it is true that eating yogurt containing these ingredients would not be ‘harmful’. However, until recently little research had been carried out in connection with weight gain and its link to such products.

Some people eat pro-biotic foods as part of their daily diet. Mothers throughout the past 15 years have trusted the ability of these products to promote healthy digestion so feed it to their children every day.

In 2009, a Canadian woman contested the validation of Danone’s advertising that Activia pro-biotic yoghurt could strengthen the body’s defences. Danone denied any wrongdoing yet agreed to settle to the tune of US$1.7 million.

MISLEADING As a result of the tests run by Raoult’s team Danone has allegedly been forced to withdraw its ‘misleading advertising’ after 15 years.

Since the end of September 2011, Danone has withdrawn its advertising on French TV. Didier Raoult is a professor of microbiology and an infectious disease specialist. He directs the Tropical Research Unit and Emerging Infectious Diseases (URMITE) Unit from Marseille. At 58 he was awarded the Grand Prix Inserm 2010 for his work on pathogens and his discovery of giant viruses.

Life recipe

Lamb with cous cous COUS COUS is a much underrated accompaniment to grilled meats, perhaps because people think it’s bland. In this version the cous cous is heavily flavoured with diced Mediterranean vegetables and chicken stock and that’s all you need to go with simply grilled slices of tender lamb. You could spice up the cous cous by adding some finely chopped red chilli to the vegetables.

• 2 thick leg of lamb steaks • Salt and pepper • Half a small red pepper, finely diced • Half a small green pepper, finely diced • Half a small courgette, finely diced • A small onion, finely chopped • A clove of garlic, chopped • 75g mushrooms, finely chopped • Olive oil • 125ml chicken stock • 125g cous cous • A knob of butter 1. Heat a little oil in a small frying pan and fry the peppers, onion and courgette for 5-6 minutes until just cooked. Add the garlic and mushrooms and fry, stirring, for a further 5-6 minutes. Set aside.

2. Season the lamb steaks with salt and pepper and grill or fry for 2-3 minutes on each side. This will leave the lamb pink in the centre.

Cook for longer if preferred.

3. While the lamb is cooking, bring the stock to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add the cooked vegetables and dry cous cous. Remove from the heat and stir in the knob of butter. Cover and allow to stand for a couple of minutes, then serve with the cooked lamb.

Serves 2 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

Baywatch victory at the III San Silvestre Race THE TOWN of Ondara ended the year with the III San Silvestre Race, covering 4km in fancy dress!

The winning team, the Baywatch beach heroes was followed by runners up dressed as Rubik’s cubes and a whole team of reindeers pulling an inflatable Santa! The event attracted more than 500 people, the race organised by the Department of Sports and Athletics Club Ondara, with the collaboration of Somesport, Sports Colau, Pons Brothers (Building Materials), Civil Defence and local Police.

Items for the sale are now being accepted and if people donate goods for SCAN, no commission will be charged when they go under the hammer and the El Vergel-based charity is also organising a cake stall at the auction to raise money, Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon, including hot dogs, cakes, mulled wine, tea and coffee.

Gustav plays guitar

By Jack Troughton JAZZ GUITARIST Gustav Lundgren and his string trio visit the Costa Blanca on Friday 17th January threatening to hold music fans spellbound.

Born in Stockholm in 1980, he took up the instrument aged 12 and began to scoop a series of awards – including the much-coveted Louis Armstrong Scholarship – and has become one of the most prominent guitarists on the international scene.

Having travelled 24 countries in recent times, the band are playing at the Parador Hotel in Javea, continuing the run of monthly jazz concerts launched last October and with plans later in the year to move outside into the gardens.

Gustav is also a busy recording artist, his latest release ‘Gustav Plays Richard Rogers’ includes many evergreens, including ‘There’s a Small Hotel’, ‘The Lady is a Tramp’, ‘Isn’t it Romantic’ and ‘Bewitched’.

The band will also pay tribute to the great gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. With violinist Stefan Grappelli, the pair set the jazz world ablaze in the thirties when they formed ‘Hot Club de France’, the first ever all string jazz ensemble.

MAYOR OF Calpe, César Sánchez Pérez, and Town Councillor Carole Saunders, have secured a first for Calpe with the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) agreeing to host their annual convention, ‘En Armonía’, in the town.

“We’re very excited about this new venture, which will bring many national and overseas visitors to the town,” said Carole. The delegates will be staying at the Bahía and Gran Sol y Mar Hotels and it is hoped that the local tourist train will provide them with transport to and from the Casa de Cultura.

En Armonía takes place from 2nd April to 6th April 2014, with national and international contests and shows held at the Casa de Cultura during the weekend.

The first big event will be a spectacular show on Wednesday, 2nd April at 8pm, featuring the current UK and European champion chorus, The White Rosettes, and

Nexus 7 keeps freezing HIYA AUNTY: I have a Nexus 7 and this last two times travelling back to the UK from Spain it has frozen. The only way I got it going was to reboot it. Twice I have lost everything on it. Is there a way to avoid this and to save my apps in case this happens again? Any info would be appreciated.

Aunty says: Freezing can be down to an app trying to do something or access something and it cannot.

Rather than doing a ‘hard reset’ that loses all installed apps, you can always try a ‘soft reset’.

You can start up your device in safe mode, which temporarily disables third-party apps that you’ve installed.

1. Ensure your device’s screen is on, then press and hold the Power button.

2. Touch and hold the Power Off option in the dialog box.

3. Touch OK in the following dialog to start safe mode.

Try using your device in safe mode to see if the problem persists.

If it doesn’t, restart your device to get it out of safe mode and uninstall recently installed apps to see if you can pinpoint the one that’s causing the problem.

Or the next time you do a full reboot, make a note of the apps you install, and rather than installing them all at once, do them once a day and see which one may be causing the freezing.

It may also be an idea to turn off the ‘google sync’ and see if that is causing the problems.

The problem of a browser not working correctly can be caused by a number of different things: browser settings; an addon not working correctly; an antivirus blocking things.

DAVID GÓMEZ, 38, is director of the greens section of the Spanish Golf Federation, a member of the European Golf Association’s golf course committee, the agronomist for the Ladies European Tour – and an example of how greenkeepers are changing with the times.

Head 2 Head Tony: How often should you change your clubs?

Campbell: It depends on a number of factors such as how often you play, what level of game you have and also on what you can afford.

Tony: Do you think that advances in technology actually make a significant difference to a player’s game?

Campbell: If you are a single figure handicap player then even small improvements can be effective. If a new club helps a golfer move from 5 to 4 handicap then that is quite an improvement. Likewise, a higher handicap player may find a new set of clubs gives him the confidence to develop his game and he could benefit from a much greater reduction.

Tony: So should I change my clubs?

Campbell: The first thing you should do is reduce the length of that old 3 wood.

Tony: Why? Campbell: It will fit in the bin easier.

Tony: Oh, that’s so funny. Have you got a new script writer?

Campbell: See you tomorrow . . .

1. What is your role with the Spanish Federation?

I am based in the Federation’s headquarters in Madrid. The Federation’s greens section is on call to all golf courses in Spain who feel they need guidance. We deal with a wide range of issues but the main problem is maintenance.

I head a team of greenkeepers advising and working to improve the condition of courses throughout the country.

2. What is your background and experience in greenkeeping?

Originally I was a biologist but golf courses really interested me. First, I worked as a greenkeeper – at Las Brisas on the Costa del Sol, and at La Cala de Mijas in the Malaga. Later, I applied for the Scholarship of Valderrama where the owner, Don Jaime Ortiz Patiño, provided the financial support enabling me to study at Michigan State University. In America, at the Atlantic Athletic Club, Georgia I was also fortunate to meet another major influence on my life, the world-renown agronomist Ken Mangum. I worked with him for two years.

3. When was the Federation’s greens section opened and how many people does it employ?

I was invited to take the job ten years ago and, since then, we have built up the team to 15, seven of whom, like me, have studied at Michigan State University. Nowadays there are many skills to learn. You have to be multi-skilled and change with the times. Understanding the game and players’ demands, knowing how to work to budgets, which are getting ever tighter, how to manage people, and how to communicate. These are all now a part of the job.

4. When courses contact you for help what is your plan of action?

I visit the course and look at every aspect of the operation, including the irrigation system, machinery, the programme for fertilisation and maintenance, and how the employees work. I then establish why the course is having the particular problem that has been reported and produce a report recommending a solution and programme for improvement. The Federation is an independent body with no links to individual suppliers so our clients know that, in the case of products we recommend, they are the ones we firmly believe are right for the job.

5. Are you currently involved with courses on the Costa Blanca?

We have worked with many courses in the area and at the moment we are at Don Cayo, Manises and a new pitch and putt course in Elche. Earlier this year the PGA European Tour staged the Spanish Open at El Saler, where we worked to produce the course in its best possible condition for the tournament. We also advised La Sella before, and during, the four years it staged the Ladies European Nations Cup. It is a fine course and I hope the competition will return there in the not too distant future.

Other golf courses we have been involved with more recently are Javea, Foressos and Costa Azahar.

Citroen C1 Connexion

“NOW, THIS is a snazzy little car,” said my wife Caroline as we sat in the Citroen C1 Connexion.

I CAN see why she instantly warms to it because it is a very girlie car with its lipstick red wing mirrors and door handles and its striking black finish. No sooner have I started driving it and another model exactly the same passes me with a young lady driving it. Unashamed I carry on regardless of the lipstick red edged rev counter, speedometer and door trim…

It is a very compact city car and surprisingly there is a good amount of legroom in the front and back, which puts competitors like the Fiat 500 to shame. Despite its blatantly female characteristics (as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz), if the hardnosed male motorist sticks with it, it provides a good driving experience.

Yes, you’ll have to ignore the sympathetic stares from macho motorists in their Range Rovers and Mercedes and the ‘sweetie’ from the effeminate assistant at the garage forecourt. “It’s my wife’s car,” I mumble. Get over that and this Peugeot 107 by any other name (it uses the same floorpan and bodyshell) has a five speed manual gearbox and a 998cc petrol engine.

You could be forgiven for thinking that this makes for a pretty dull car but because it is so light, just 805kg, it is

possible to reach 100kph from standstill in a shade over 12 seconds and onto a top speed of 157km/h. Very reasonable figures. Obviously when there are four adults inside, these results are hampered somewhat as they are when strong winds pick up, as they do in the test. Then there is the 27.6kpl (combined) figure, which is better than some diesels. At tick over the engine is audible from inside and there is a slight judder but my wife quickly reminds me that this is a massive improvement on her cherished Hyundai Pony; sadly deceased.

It is possible to squeeze a pushchair into the tiny boot or a week’s worth of shopping but not both at the same time. The only criticism I have, which I admit is partly my fault, is that if your hands slip from the ten-to-two position on the steering wheel it is all too easy to sound the horn, which has occurred

on a number of occasions, frightening the motorist in front and embarrassing me.

While this five-door hatchback is finished to a good standard there is no denying that this is a bit of a tin can. I shut the rear door a little too enthusiastically and I fear that if I do it any harder it might change shape.

New Emergency System for 2015 THE EU has announced that all new vehicles including ‘touring cars’ must have a system in the vehicle by 2015 where in the event of an accident the local emergency services are advised by mobile phone technology with the GPS location.

It has yet to be introduced and promulgated into Spanish law but it looks as though it will be as it may save lives.

It appears that many accidents can occur where those involved are not able to use their mobile phones. The day is coming where we will not need to drive the vehicles at all. For me there will be no fun anymore in using a car. Back to motorbikes again, my first love for 45 years. But even more costs for the vehicle owners.

MORE POWERFUL CARS ON OFFER With the ever-increasing numbers of speed traps and higher fines, I find it crazy that more and more vehicles are being sold with much more powerful engines. Some drivers will speed at well over 300kph and they are not equipped for the race tracks.

And my experiences here show that over 90% of drivers are not skilled enough to operate cars that will do even 160kph, by the way they constantly

go over the double white lines on corners and the white line on the right that is the border for the hard shoulder or the pedestrian area. They are unable to take the correct driving lines through corners, but beware for if a police vehicle is following, they may stop you and issue a fine and a penalty point loss on you licence.

Be safe out there and watch out for the increased numbers of speed traps: the Spanish government is broke and needs the money.
