The long arm of the law RETIRED BRITISH police officers John and Liz Yardley used traditional detective skills to bring a cunning and “brazen” Costa Blanca fraudster to justice. by Jack Troughton Crooked swimming pool construction company boss Juan Antonio Gomez Olivares of AG Pools was jailed for two years and ordered to repay victims at an Alicante Court last Friday over a 100,000€ scam. The smooth talking businessman preyed on unsuspecting customers by claiming he had cash flow problems to get money advanced to finish a contract - but vanished leaving victims with little more than a hole in the ground. However, he picked the wrong target when he tangled with John and Liz who were able to build up a case against Gomez and present a file to the Guardia Civil that led to the fraudster’s downfall. John and Liz are one of eight known victims between Alfaz del Pi and Gandia – but John, a former Detective Inspector, believes over the years many more people lost out to the con. “We presented the file to the Guardia Civil and they were most interested as to how we got all the information – it included personal details, where he got his materials from, the car he was driving, where his mother lived – we even spoke to his ex-girlfriend,” said John.

“She was asked by Gomez to pay money into her bank account so it could not be found. “We told the Guardia we had just asked the right questions. We presented the file and said our last knowledge of him was leaving a hire car at Alicante Airport – he was actually driving around on his deceased father’s driving licence.” CATCH Later the Guardia Civil discovered the businessman had not left the country and had fled to Madrid. “We had a little bet on who would be the first to catch him – we were within a day of doing so when the Guardia told us they had picked him up in Jaen. I asked how it was done and they said his details were circulated as the third most wanted man in Spain at the time!” The Yardley’s decided they wanted a pool and terrace area at their Javea home in 2008 and obtained a number of quotes. AG Pools won the contract after offering to build a pool and 100 square metres of terrace for 30,000€. “It was not the cheapest quote but he turned up on time and could do the job,” John said John. and Liz Continued on page 5 Yardley
