The colour of purple

by Jack Troughton PAINSTAKING RESTORATION of a 17th Century painting discovered on the Costa Blanca gives weight to growing evidence it is an original by a young Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Flemish artist and diplomat.

The picture ‘Lamentation of the Virgin, St Magdalene and St John over the body of Christ’ was purchased as a copy in a Christie’s auction and is now in private ownership in Spain.

The Prado in Madrid maintains it has the original by Sir Anthony Van Dyck.

However, until 1975 it was said to be

by Rubens. And Dr Susan Grundy, an art investigation consultant, believes the colour purple provides a huge clue to the authenticity of the Costa Blanca painting rather than the Prado picture because of a 1667 description.

tacular” and highlighted the purple of the Magdalene’s dress – as described in the 17th Century at the El Escorial – rather than the red of the Prado painting.

“What puts these two paintings immediately apart is the fact that the painting in private collection depicts the Magdalene in a striking purple dress and black mantle – the dress even more dramatically purple after the Valencia restoration,” explained Dr Grundy.

“This totally concords with the description of de los Santos in 1667, which says she wears a black mantle above a purple dress. This purple dress is purple whichever way you look at it.

“On the other hand, the Magdalene in the Prado version wears a red dress, toned down with later over paintings to a dress of muted fawn with pinky red sleeves. Her mantle is blue.”

Pigment tests on the Costa Blanca picture have shown it contains colours available to 17th Century artists, while the Prado painting – allegedly a later copy – contains “anachronisms”.

Green light for cancer research lab

by Jack Troughton DENIA HOSPITAL will have a Laboratory of Molecular Oncology thanks to the patronage of Cancer Care Javea and a unique accord signed by the health authority and two universities.

Headed by oncologist Joan Gasent, state of the art machinery – purchased by the charity – will make genetic studies of malignant tumours to give patients individual tailor made treatment.

It is understood it is the first time two universities, in this case the University of Alicante and the Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia, have worked together and the Marina Salud hospital will accommodate the project.

Sharing results worldwide, Cancer Care’s English Cathedra of Modern Oncology Research (ECMOR) will investigate how to personalise treatment through the best selection of drugs to attack a tumour.

It is believed by discovering the best medication it will both improve re-

sults and, crucially, decrease the toxic affects currently suffered by patients during treatment.

Cancer Care has already put aside 200,000€ to buy the necessary magic machinery and in 2013 put aside another 80,000€ for the ECMOR foundation.

Charity President Eileen Saville told RTN: “We had a wonderful year in 2013 with raising funds one way or another and because of this we were able to allocate a further 80,000€ to ECMOR which is the research laboratory at Denia Hospital.

APPROVED “This foundation has at long last been given the necessary approval by the Valencian government, Denia Hospital and the two universities.

“All has been signed and sealed by all parties and from now on our motto will be ‘no stopping us now’, so watch this space.”

Eileen said the charity had also sup-

ported the Macmillan Nurses during 2013 and made donations to a number of cancer-related “problems” in the area. It will also continue to support the Le Fe Children’s Cancer hospital in Valencia during 2014.

And she said Cancer Care’s goal over the next 12 months was to raise its profile and maintain the momentum of fund raising.

Eileen said she wished to thank all the charity’s “willing volunteers” for giving so much time in raising funds.

“We would also like to thank the businesses and shops who give their sponsorship to help our worthy cause.

Last, but not least, we would like to thank all the people who kindly donated goods and made purchases from our two shops in Javea Park.”

Building sparks anger

Frank overlooks the site from his ground floor home

by Jack Troughton ANGRY COSTA Blanca residents fear they will be left in the dark as the construction of two new houses will block out the light to their homes.

Work marking out the site in Albir began last week and worried neighbours discovered it was intended to build a pair of two storey homes with an underbuild.

Frank Maidment, who lives in an apartment block next to the site in Carrer Centaure, said at first he was certain the construction must be illegal because it was so close to the boundary of the community where his home is.

And as the first diggers moved in, the 85year-old went to Alfaz del Pi Town Hall to warn the council of the unwanted building.

“The architect produced the plans. They say there’s nothing to be done because it has planning permission – the plans are actually 40 years old and were passed by Alicante,” he told RTN. “It’s terrible because some apartments will be completely blocked off – everyone will be left in the dark.”

BULLDOZER He explained in the week before Easter a bulldozer arrived to clear the area of rough ground that for years had just been “the empty space next door”.

Frank, a retired estate agent who has lived in Spain for 40 years, said next a group of people arrived and inspected the site.

“They were measuring it out and then painting lines along the ground – it comes right up to the edge of our plot. I was sure they had no right to do it,” he said.

“And one of my neighbours asked what they were doing and they said it was to build two houses. We all worked it out and we think eight apartments will be blighted, losing the light into our homes.”

Frank, who successfully battled with an illegal building next to his former Alfaz home, led a deputation to the local authority. “I thought it was just people taking advantage again, more illegal building.

“It was quite a shock to learn it has permission – it’s going to upset a lot of people here.”

The great Spanish exodus

By Jan Gamm THE POPULATION of the province of Alicante has fallen by 83,000 people in just one year due to the departure of foreigners returning to their home countries, according to statistics released on Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The agency released provisional figures of census to 1st January 2014, showing that inhabitants in the area numbered 1,862,359, compared to 1,945,642 twelve months previously.

The British leaving Spanish shores nationwide number no less than 40,000, reducing the British population in Spain by more than one fifth in 2013, bringing the country’s total population down for the second consecutive year. The total number of Brits on Spain’s town hall ‘padrons’ was 385,179 on 1st January 2013, but by 1st January 2014 that figure had plummeted to 297,229.

According to Professor Raquel Huete of the Department of Sociology of the University of Alicante, Europeans are leaving due to “…unemployment, scarcity of work that is paid at a reasonable rate, higher taxes and strict conditions for access to health care, all of which contribute to the decline in residents, especially in younger age bands.” Spain’s unemployment rate is currently 26 per cent, while youth unemployment is 55 per cent.

It is not all dire news, however. Spain’s ailing property market, in crisis since the economic downturn in 2008, is making a slow recovery, mostly due to speculative purchasers anxious to take advantage of rock bottom prices. Stressed homeowners, anxious to leave and begin a new life elsewhere, are accepting ‘silly offers’ for their property prior to departure.

At the same time as Spain’s expatriate population heads for home turf, Spaniards are also leaving to look for work. Some 51,000 registered with the UK’s national insurance scheme in 2013, making them the second largest group of arrivals after Poland.

Meanwhile the only foreign group that is steadily growing nationwide is Chinese.

Most Chinese arrivals come to Spain with a job already in the pipeline and many Chinese residents enjoy low living costs by sharing with extended family.

Party invite

by Jack Troughton CALPE COUNCILLOR Carole Saunders has accepted an invitation to join the local branch of the Partido Popular to continue the town hall’s drive for sustainable development. She has served in the current government team as an Independent Green but believes the new-look PP is the best way to bring stability to the community.

Mrs Saunders, a tireless charity worker and defender of the environment, explained she had always been an ‘Independent’ and was not a member of the Green Party at national level; the two came together for the last local elections.

And the British politician added she was not happy with the Greens’ affiliation to the BLOC, the Valencian national party, or links to the communist party.

“I am already in the government of Calpe and want to continue my work and the work of the local government team,” explained Mrs Saunders. “We are a good team and work well together.

“We have brought stability and sustainable development to Calpe – we cannot overspend because we are linked into Madrid’s Plan Ajuste. I salute Prime Minister Rajoy for having the guts to do it.” She added: “I am also happy the central government has faced up to the reality that town halls need reforming and control.”

Mrs Saunders, who is an important link to the tow hall for the Englishspeaking community, said at local level the current members of the PP were Carole with “very different” from an older regime “which was tainted by allegations of Calpe corruption”, while MEP Eva Ortiz was very active in the area.

Tragedy averted - just in time

EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Haniya Kanaan was found hidden in a suitcase in her father’s car by Spanish Customs officials at the port of Tarifa. 38-year-old Ayham Kanaan entered Spain from Morocco on a legal work permit and was attempting to smuggle Haniya into the country “so that she could have a better life.”

Haniya was taken to a hospital for checks after being found struggling to breathe in her tiny hiding place. Doctors said the little girl might have died had she been left in the suitcase for much longer. The court has ruled that provided Kanaan remains in work and that Haniya lives with her father both will be allowed to stay in the country.

Shipwrecks to be investigated

THE ASSOCIATION of Marine Fishery has authorised an investigation into a series of ‘absurd’ accidents in northwest Spain where no less than three fishing boats have sunk in calm seas in a month, leaving 18 crew members dead. The CC OO has also demanded clarification, particularly with regard to the last incident in Asturias last Thursday, when three sailors were killed and another two were missing in relatively calm conditions. The investigation will analyse working conditions and safety precautions in operation on board licensed vessels.

Crime stoppers

by Jack Troughton RESIDENTS OF a sprawling Marina Alta urbanisation worried by growing levels of crime are planning the launch of Neighbourhood Watch in the area.

The organisation – ‘Vecinos Cooperando’ – is a well-respected system of neighbours working together and the police to both deter crime and reduce the fear of crime.

And people on Cumbre del Sol in Benitachell have formed a steering committee to plan the start of Neighbourhood Watch and involve all residents of the urbanisation.

By reducing the opportunities for criminals, it is hoped to make the area a safer place to live - and if a crime does occur, residents are helped to cooperate with the authorities and help bring offenders to justice under Spanish law.

The steering group has already collected the necessary papers to register as a branch

of Neighbourhood watch in Spain and won the backing of the local police.

Members have discovered similar schemes across the region have benefited, witnessing a reduction in crime and a corresponding increase in the quality of life in communities, and a reassurance and comfort to residents.

Margaret Hales, of the steering group, said: “Neighbourhood Watch is a system for all, of whatever nationality. To work, we need individuals to help coordinate the information and pass it on to the appropriate authorities.

“The more neighbours who are part of the organisation, the better is the reporting process, the safer we will all be.”

She added: “The ability to speak some Spanish is helpful but not essential – both enthusiasm and the willingness to work with others are!”

The privately owned Lamentation was bought at Christie’s in 2001. It came from “one of the most prestigious Victorian collections”, that of Baronet Francis Cook, giving it key provenance.

Dr Grundy said it was technically superior to the Prado painting. “It also presents a more sombre and elegant tonality, evidence of its greater antiquity.”

Dr Grundy said the restored picture showed the “exuberance” and technique of Rubens, with influences of Caravaggio. “I don’t think the art world yet understands the young Rubens – and I do lean towards Lamentation being by Rubens rather than Van Dyck.” She believes the picture was created in Spain because it bore Flemish techniques and materials but took in Hispanic drama not seen in Flemish painting.

And Dr Grundy said she was in “no doubt” the

restored work painting was the picture that had hung in the El Escorial for well over 100 years, painted by Rubens – knighted by both the English and Spanish courts.

She said: “One troubling question remains: why would Christie’s sell a Masterpiece as a copy hoping to relegate it, in virtual terms, to the scrap heap?

“The answer is complicated...undoubtedly there are few scholars who would be prepared to go against a major international museum, such as the Prado, so literally as to say they have been mistaken for over 100 years, and have a copy and not an original.”

Expats will be unable to have a voice in the UK ballot unless they register and return their forms by Tuesday 6th May to have a say in the poll.

Every British citizen living abroad and has been registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years can vote but if they are not on the electoral register they will not have a voice. Samantha Mills, head of Campaigns at the Electoral Commission, said “time is now short” and asked people to “take five minutes” and to print and complete a form from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/overseas She said: “It’s really important to allow plenty of time to return your form. Although online registration is being launched in the summer, the only way for expats to register for the May election is by posting the form to the local authority where they were last registered to vote in the UK.” Research shows while 5.5 million UK citizens are living abroad, less than 20,000 were on UK electoral registers at the end of 2012.

“At the Electoral Commission we have also carried out

research that shows 44% of those not registered to vote mistakenly believe that they are – so it’s really important to double check,” added Samantha.

“You can do this by calling or emailing the electoral registration officer at your last local authority in the UK. If you are not sure who this is, you can use the postcode search at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk to find their details.”

Expats living in Spain can choose whether to vote in their adopted country or in the UK but not in both.

Samantha said casting the vote was more difficult for an expat and currently there were two options available – a postal vote or proxy voting, asking a trusted person to vote on a person’s behalf.

Postal ballot papers are only sent out two weeks before the election and she said it was important to consider whether this left enough time to return a vote to the UK. “If not, you can appoint a proxy to insure your vote is cast in time, especially if you are in a far-flung location.”

The deadline for applying for a postal vote is 7th May and to appoint a proxy is 14th May. All application forms are on the www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/overseas website.

“The elections are just around the corner and the deadline to register is Tuesday 6th May – it’s your vote, don’t lose it,” added Samantha.

A world class baggage scandal

by Jack Troughton IT HAS emerged that 22 million items of luggage were ‘mishandled’ in airports around the world last year. Thieves and even border officials are suspected of secretly searching bags for valuables that may be pilfered.

Travellers have long suspected that baggage handlers secretly rifle through their luggage - the expression ‘mishandled’ may cover bags that are delayed, lost, or rummaged through by ruthless airport officials. The number of ‘mishandled’ bags equates to roughly seven bags per 1,000. But European flyers are more likely to ¬suffer than anywhere else, where nine bags per 1,000 go astray or are tampered with. And the inadequate international system of baggage tagging allows international airports to consistently ‘pass the buck’ and

deny all knowledge when specific accusations are made. So be warned – don’t place valuables in your suitcase.

Goat hunting gets go-ahead THE DEPARTMENT of Environment are passing legislation which will allow the hunting of wild African goats that are devastating crops and wildlife in the region. Originally from Morocco and the Sahara, there has been a huge increase in population since 2009, with large herds detected in Benidorm, Alicante, Alcoy and the surrounding mountainous areas. Until now farmers faced hefty fines of up to 3000€ for hunting them and felt helpless as they destroyed their crops.

A sorry tale...

IF ANY of your readers or their friends are thinking of hiring a car please let them be warned by my sorry tale. In October 2013 I had to travel to Leeds for five days to attend a funeral and had to hire a car.

My flight back to Spain was very early and their hire desk was not open so I was unable to have the car checked back in by their staff. Because of this, I carefully made sure that there was no damage to the vehicle before parking it in their own car park and dropping the keys in the box provided at their desk. However, shortly after this, they took from my credit card, the full excess amount of £250 plus a £27 admin. fee, saying I had caused minor damage to the bumper, which I am adamant I did not. We argued for five months, but as it was basically their word against mine, I have had to stand the charge, but I strongly resent the implication that I am a liar. I feel this is a money making scheme on their part, especially as they informed me during our correspondence that they did not repair minor damage immediately, but took the excess from hirers to offset depreciation!

So I would urge your readers never to return a hire car unchecked by a hire company, but also to take photos of its condition when you collect it, so that fictitious charges cannot be made.

Trumped-up charges SHOULDN’T THE British consulate take up with the Spanish Government the number of trumped-up charges the Spanish police are handing out? It has almost reached the point where you are afraid to drive your car! Last summer I park my car in Piles and had my car towed away. The police pointed to the ‘No Parking’ signs: yes, there were temporary ‘No Parking’ signs in place, but they were not there when I parked my car! I told the police this and they said the signs had been there all day.

Thank you MABS Mar Menor Splitting hairs?

I WOULD like to publicly thank MABS Mar Menor for all their help during my recent breast cancer journey. When I was first diagnosed I was in total shock. They helped not only with transport but I had reflexology from volunteer Gail Grainger (which was divine) and they were always on hand to offer practical support and advice.

My fight with cancer was particularly hard as I live alone - my family were back in the UK. I did have great support from friends but essentially I was on my own a lot during gruelling chemotherapy.

In September last year I was seriously ill with neutropenic fever (I had no immune system and no white blood cells) caused by chemotherapy. I rang MABS and was taken to hospital by volunteer Ellen Moores, a trained nurse. Without her and MABS intervention, I would not be here. She

and other volunteers were absolutely marvellous, looking after me during my stay in hospital and ringing every day when I returned home to make sure I was okay and coping.

After chemo I then had to make visits to hospital for radiotherapy. Again MABS came to my rescue. I was taken every day mostly by Charles Grainger who waited patiently outside for up to three hours while I had my treatment.

To anyone unfortunate enough to go through cancer I would say it is tough, particularly living abroad away from family, but charities like MABS are a godsend for practical support, advice and general help. You don’t have to be on your own.

Do use their services and do support them: your journey will be a lot easier. Once again thank you, MABS. I am forever in your debt. There are angels that walk this earth.

OH DEAR - to go out and be totally obsessive about other people’s dogs! Perhaps we could be enlightened as to how many people are killed or injured by dog hairs every year… Why does Mrs T think that she has the right to impose her views on such matters in a general sweeping statement? I have lived in Spain since 2006. It’s not perfect (driving; parking anywhere; paperwork…) but get a life! Stop trying to impose your thoughts on another, different culture. There are plenty of flights back to England, where you could perhaps enjoy a dog-free meal!

Province of Alicante has most fatalities at Easter ROAD DEATH mortality figures rose during both March and April in Spain, with roads in Alicante registering the highest percentage of deaths among the 35 recorded by the DGT over Easter’s Holy Week.

by Keith Nicol In total, Alicante accounted for five of the 35 deaths registered nationwide between 3pm Friday 11th April and midnight 21st April, according to official data released on Tuesday by the Directorate General Traffic (DGT).

Especially tragic was the loss of three people on the dangerous stretch of the N332 in Torrevieja, where a frontal collision took the lives of three people, one of whom was a popular Ukrainian priest.

Two other people were killed on the same stretch of road earlier this year.

Alicante is followed by the provinces of Lugo, with four deaths, and Seville and Toledo with three deaths in each, while for communities Valencia is in second place, surpassed only by Andalusia.

The 35 fatalities in road accidents are the second lowest figure of the period since 1960, but far re-

moved from the 26 deaths that occurred on Spanish roads during the holidays last year. Although the DGT hoped not to exceed 2013 figures, which represented a record low, the good weather encouraged citizens to travel and nine million vehicles took to the roads - a million more than Easter last year and 400,000 more than estimated.

“Those who do not aspire to great things never achieve anything,” said the general manager of Traffic, Maria Segui, adding that the DGT continues to do its part for society, striving to reach a ‘zero’ accident rate.

The DGT reported that those killed in traffic accidents this year numbered 296, one less than in the Three same period last year. by Jack Troughton ARTIST FIONNA Ashman and loyal pet Syd have arrived in France on their epic trek from West Wales to Valencia to raise awareness over animal welfare and to raise cash for a sanctuary near her home.

If all goes to plan, the courageous woman and dog will arrive in El Vergel and the SCAN animal charity sometime towards the end of June.

Fionna embarked on the journey on Monday 7th April from the privately run Lizzie’s Barn Sanctuary in Kidwelly, a rescue and rehabilitation centre.

“Syd and I set off on our epic journey to raise funds for our sanctuary as well as to highlight the plight of animals, in particular dogs, in many parts of mainland Europe,” said Fionna.

“Equipped with just a backpack, tent and bare essentials for Syd and me, we are relying on the support and goodwill of local people along the way.”

The pair took a ferry from Portsmouth on Wednesday and they are now heading through Normandy.

Care of Animals in Need, said: “We have willingly and proudly agreed to collaborate with Fionna in supporting her on an amazing journey to highlight the plight of maltreated and abandoned animals.

“In doing so we hope to raise and reinforce public and cultural awareness of what needs to be done to protect and care for God’s gifts to us, our beautiful animals.”

He added: “Better understanding of the law should be enforced for animals – they have rights under the law but no one actually observes them.”

Barry said Syd – a Chesapeake Bay retriever - was keeping Fionna company along the route and it was clear people were already offering the pair hospitality and support.

“We will be marking the end of it with a fiesta here at SCAN and I will be writing to other charities here in Spain to try and raise funds to get her and Syd back to the UK,” he added.

“We thought it unlikely Fionna and the dog will want to walk back to Wales!”

Línea Directa advises you how to act in case of an accident

LÍNEA DIRECTA Insurance advises you of the steps to follow in case of a road accident in Spain.

1. Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident.

2. Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible.

3. Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m.

4. If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive.

5. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

Ann Marie was back on duty on Saturday at the annual Fun Day at Javea Park helping the charity function run smoothly.

She told RTN they had completed the challenge – which takes in Javea’s 15 official viewing points or ‘miradors’ on the coast and is organised by javeamigos.com – in six hours and 56 minutes.

Hilda had only been released from hospital 10 days earlier following a hip operation but together with a couple of colleague baked all the cakes to make a “wonderful display” for the big day.

Hard-working students to receive awards THE VOLUNTARY English Teaching Group is holding an award ceremony on Wednesday 30th April at 11am in Javea’s Casa de Cultura for students who have successfully completed the 100-hour English Language Course. Group Co-ordinator Tanya Sedgwick told RTN: “There are 41 students studying English and 18 studying German to be awarded after passing the exam course. These students are registered with Creama as unemployed and the course is part of a ‘return to work’ project.” Javea’s deputy mayor Oscar Anton and Juan Luis Cardona (Consejal) will be there to award the certificates.

By Jack Troughton ROCK ‘N’ roll ruled at an end of term party at the Elian’s British School in La Nucia in a special benefit to raise awareness of – and collect food for – children cared for by EMAUS. Local rock band Lock ‘N’ Load took to the stage to entertain and the event

raised more than 310€, and a van full of food and other goodies.

Students, parents and teaching staff all pitched in to help – with some enterprising Year 8 girls making a booth to sell fresh popcorn. Other pupils made posters and charity boxes to collect loose change and donated toys.

And parents and teachers gave gifts of clothing, toiletries, and food.

Radio station Heat FM played a part by giving two adult tickets to Terra Natura as one of the raffle prizes.

Tony Grande of Make a Smile attended the function and thanked students, parents and staff for their contributions.

“All the children donated 1€ to help buy food for EMAUS. Kids helping kids, I absolutely love it!” he said.

May Day fun

by Jack Troughton A FUN family day out is promised by animal charity AKIRA as it hosts its annual May Day Fair next Thursday (1st May) at the Font Santa picnic area in Teulada.

The fair is opened at 12.30pm and continues until 6pm with an afternoon packed with live entertainment, food and drink, and over 30 stalls selling a variety of goodies.

The charity itself will have a cake stall – donations welcome – run a bar, tombola, an AKIRA shop, and sell books.

Stalls include home made products, fashion, gifts, antiques, African goods, and shabby chic furniture. There will also be face painting and tarot card readings.

Food is provided by Cornish Pride and will offer an interesting menu, including wraps, split chicken, salad, burgers, and pies.

Zumba opens the entertainment with Kimberley Harrison at 1pm; Marcia’s Dance Studio takes over at 1.45pm; Timewarp take the stage at 2.15pm; members of the Rodeo Stompers Linedancers strut their stuff at 2.45pm; followed by the Flamingo Cheerleaders at 3.15pm; Timewarp return at 3.45pm; and John the Fiddler is last on stage at 4.15pm.

WHILST APPRECIATING many articles are now written referring to the importance of a funeral plan, there are still many who are just leaving everything to chance. In my opinion, it is the most loving and supportive decision you can make towards each other and your family and at the same time it can be a great saving financially.

I am aware that we British are probably one of the worst countries in both facing and discussing our own mortality, therefore something that should be planned by just taking one hour of your time is put to one side.

Most of us are aware that funerals in Spain are carried out in a very short space of time. Therefore decisions have to be made extremely quickly and whilst you are under a great deal of stress, plus payment of which you are not in control has to be found in full before the funeral is carried out.

I often hear: “Don’t worry - we are organised, as we are donating our bodies to medical science.” Yes, you will be accepted in principal. However, the document that supports your request is usually in Spanish and the recipient could believe that once this is completed and signed, everything will be taken care of when they pass away and there will be no cost or stress for their loved ones… Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Increasingly, many are not accepted when the inevitable happens for the following reasons: a) If the death happens out of the province of the University (e.g. Alicante) b) In the case of accident or any other cause of death which then requires a post mortem

c) When death occurs after surgery and the wounds have not been fully healed d) Should the death be due to infectious or contagious disease It will be the decision of the Professor of Anatomy at the time, and who knows what we are going to die of in the future. There are five potential reasons why you might not be accepted at the time of your demise, and if you come into one of these categories, what does your family/estate do then? Sadly they will have to pay the full costs which as the years go by will obviously increase and what today costs approximately 4,000€ could cost considerably more: this obviously would come as quite a nasty shock, both financially and stress wise.

Can you really afford to place yourself in this potentially unpleasant situation? It comes back to what I have been advocating now for nearly two decades - take a little time to speak to one of my consultants regarding a suitable plan for your needs. You will be pleasantly surprised by the terms and conditions we are able to offer.

On a lighter note, I would like to advise you that I have moved my office from Playa Flamenca commercial centre, to Los Dolses. Eat your hat

by Jack Troughton AN EDIBLE Easter Bonnet was one of the unusual entries when members of U3A Marina Baixa’s Dining Out Group were challenged to create and wear traditional headgear.

Elaine Mitchell crowned her bonnet with an Easter Simnel Cake, complete with marzipan balls, which was duly sliced and eaten by fellow diners at the Deja Vu Restaurant in Alfaz del Pi on Good Friday An independent judge awarded Elizabeth Guest’s hat winner for the ladies and John Barrett, sporting a Mad Hatter topper, winner for the men. Waiter Ian joined the spirit of the occasion, decorating his crash helmet with flowers.

The group also enjoyed an afternoon of trying each other’s bonnets for size – designs included fabulous floral creations, illuminated hats, and even knitted chickens.

May’s Dining Out will be held at the Wok in La Nucia when the time changes to 7.30pm to take advantage of long summer evenings.

Tails wagging at SCAN

By Jack Troughton SUPPORTERS OF animal charity SCAN enjoyed fun in the sun last Sunday at the annual Easter Party – helping raise 760€ for charity coffers.

The barbecue was working all day and the bar team was kept on its toes – while everyone enjoyed the egg and spoon race and Easter bonnet competition.

It was also an opportunity for the volunteers from the Society for the Care of Animals in Need shelter and the charity shop to meet at the El Vergel centre and enjoy themselves.

And charity President Barry Caulfield said: “It was great to see such a committed team all together and all gaining such great results for SCAN and our animals.”

Currently the charity is seeing 91% of its dogs adopted into ‘forever’ homes, and 93% of its rescued cats.

Barry added: “We are going from strength to strength and it is all down to hard work and to the people we have working at the shelter seven days a week. The first volunteers arrive at 8am and the last leave at 8pm.

“We have an increasing number of Spanish volunteers. Dedication and hard work is the secret. The thing that amazes me is the level of enthusiasm everyone has got – it is what is necessary for the good of the animals.” For more information about the charity visit www.scancostablanca.com

by Jack Troughton It was a Good Friday for Mary, she was presented with a certificate, a Lions carrier bag and an Easter egg – and was happy to take part in a photo opportunity with Lions’ President Ann Colclough and club members.

The bookstall is held at the weekly market in Moraira on the first and third Friday of the month and Mary, who is a volunteer at the HELP Charity Shop

in the village, popped along looking for something good to read.

The stall was launched seven years ago to help funds for a Lion faced with substantial costs for cancer treatment. Sadly, the club member died but the bookstall continued and has become a focal point for the English-speaking community as well as raising significant sums of money for the Lions’ charity account.

All books are second hand and in at least ‘very good’ condition – quality control is strictly enforced – and priced

at 1€. Many are snapped up by bookworms and returned for resale.

And the popularity of the stall means Teulada Moraira Lions are always on the look-out for new stock. TODOS JUNTOS Jávea held a bumper raffle at the Easter Market in Javéa. After three glorious days, lots of enthusiasm and generosity from all nationalities in the town, Mayor José Chulvi drew the ticket for the lucky winner who took away a stunning Easter Basket full of goodies. All the money raised goes as always to help the many less fortunate families in Jávea.

Telescope in Albir A TELESCOPE has been installed at the lighthouse in Albir, which is free for visitors of the park to use. It is a great vantage point, with breathtaking views and where bottlenose dolphins are often spotted out at sea. The cost of the telescope – 2589€ was jointly met by Alfaz Council, the Generalitat Valenciana and the Association of Citizens for Science.

Choir wins standing ovation

By Jack Troughton DELIGHTED MEMBERS of the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir won a standing ovation after their performance at Benitachell Church last Saturday, part of the church’s Easter celebrations. The growing reputation of the choir meant the church was packed as they sang old favourites such as Amen and Anthem from Chess, and introduced new material such as the classic Bridge over Troubled Waters.

The audience was also treated to pieces by classical duo The Dolce Divas – Claire Post, the choir’s Musical director, and Kirsty Glen, one

of the choir’s pianists – who brought variety to the evening’s music, along with accompanist Heather Butcher. Most of the material performed by the choir can be seen at the growing number of videos on You Tube and plans are underway to produce a CD of its music.

Madrid Zoo ‘having a giraffe!’

TWO BABY giraffes have been born at Madrid’ Zoo this week, extending the giraffe family to six, part of the European Breeding Programme and Conservation of the species (EEP).

Giraffe mums Mica and Tatu delivered their babies on the weekend, just one hour apart. The public are welcome to visit the new-borns within their ‘maternity ward’ where they are busy bonding with their mothers prior to joining the rest of the giraffe clan. They are expected to venture outdoors sometime during the first week in May.

Arts and crafts in the Lumberjack Festival in Cofrentes

COFRENTES CELEBRATES its La Maderada festival for the 7th time on 3rd May, the same week that Amata holds an Arts & Crafts Market.

The festival celebrates the 18th & 19th Century timber trade along the Cabriel and Jucar Rivers. Burghers of Cofrentes don colourful black smocks and brightly coloured neckerchiefs, pick up their punting poles and march to the banks of the river Cabriel for a blessing before ferrying across the river.

The fun starts with a breakfast of ‘tortas’, ‘pasteles’ and ‘zurracapote’ (local sangria), followed by folk dancing, a giant paella, music and of course a lovely Arts and Crafts fair.

The stalls are varied and interesting, featuring leather chess boards; carved rings and hair pins from bone and wood; a smith with realistic forged and hammered roses; wooden toys; puppets; ceramics; decorated boxes; jewellery and iron work - all hand crafted!

The market, situated next to the castle, is open Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May from 11am to 2pm and from 5pm to 9pm. This year the market has a circus theme: two acrobats show off their skills accompanied by two enthusiastic drummers. Young visitors can pick up skills in various workshops. And there is a small tavern that forms part of the market.

The picturesque Cofrentes offers magnificent views of the river, lake and surrounding hills, with thermal baths nearby, a golf course and an adventure play park. The village lies on the border between Valencia and Albacete, half way between Almansa and Requena.

MABS Charity fashion show The newly opened MABS Cancer Charity support centre in La Cala will be holding their first fashion show on Wednesday 30th April. The event will be on between 11am and 1pm – Sue Ruela, Director of the Benidorm branch will make a short introductory speech and then the first half of the show will start, running for around 30 minutes and featuring 30 different outfits. There will then be a short interval with drinks and a raffle followed by the second half of the show.

Why not pop down and enjoy a complimentary drink while supporting this worthy cause – all proceeds will go towards helping those affected by cancer. You can catch the number 2 bus from the Rincon, which goes to La Cala.

Going underground

SLEEPING ON a London Underground platform and listening to the radio were two vivid memories of journalist Benny Davis who lived through the Blitz as a youngster.

He told Year 6 students of the Laude Lady Elizabeth Junior School how life in 1940 was very much a ‘black and white’ world.

“Survival rules were very simple. Parents, teachers and policemen were to be obeyed, news in papers, radio and in cinema newsreels were to be believed, and you ate what you were given,” he said.

“Death became part of life, counselling was non-existent, the government was winning the war and the Royal Family was the leader of the nation.

“It was very simple. We were the good

guys, all equal and totally united in defending our country against a common enemy.”

Benny visited the school to offer an insight into life in the Second World War and bring history alive for a group studying the conflict – and he followed the recent talk given by former fighter pilot John McMullen.

DEVASTATION Born in Clapham, Benny said although he grew up surrounded by death and devastation, he also had fun and gave the children a series of humorous anecdotes.

Aged eight in 1940, he said his regular teachers virtually changed overnight as they left to fight the war – replaced by a band of strange and older staff he likened to the cast of movie ‘Monsters Inc’.

However, Benny said education played second fiddle to survival. Air raids meant sometimes it was not possible to get to school and frequently difficult to get home – sadly empty classroom desks were also a reminder that children were not immune to bombs and friendships were cut short.

He said classes were constantly being in-

terrupted by the sound of enemy aircraft approaching – triggering the need for a change of venue from schoolroom to air raid shelter.

Benny said he had one claim to fame while at school – he left aged 15 – he was elected to serve as ‘Air Raid Monitor’. His job was to help fellow pupils climb safely down into the shelters.

Comical cover up CARELINE THEATRE returns to its comic roots next with a fast and furious farce ‘Kindly Keep It Covered’ running from 15th to 17th May at the Alcalali theatre.

Roland and Julia bought the business with the cash of a hefty insurance payout following the demise of her first husband Sidney.

However, as well as being hassled by guests in search of outlawed sweet treats, Roland’s life gets even more complicated when Sidney resurrects himself and turns up at the health farm – just as Vanessa, the wife of Roland’s former boss at the Kindly Mutual checks in. Chaos, naturally, follows.

Doors open each evening at 7.30pm and curtain up is at 8pm. Proceeds from the first night are being donated to the MABS Cancer Support Group.

WELL THE 14 day weather forecast at the time of writing shows a good run of warm sunny weather until some heavy showers on Tuesday 22nd April.

Hopefully nothing changes as the first third of April brought gales, the dirtiest rain I have seen in 27 years and a thunderstorm which luckily cleaned up the plants with clean rain having blown in from the west.

So hopefully we enjoyed dry Easter processions and the traditional Easter roast suckling pigs and lambs and fully fledged Valencian Paellas. Each type of lunch is a traditional way, in various provinces, of enjoying a first family gathering and feast after the careful light eating of Lent. I prepared a paella for an international/ Spanish group of friends naturally

following the traditional recipe described in my Paella book which is now in Spanish as well as in English.

With Easter being late gardens will be really green colourful and scented as a welcome backcloth to the start of months of outdoor cooking and eating.

Then beyond Easter it will be time to plant up the last of spring plantings of flowering plants to enable them to start to expand their root balls before the hotter weather arrives and also to sow and plant summer vegetables including dwarf and climbing beans, courgettes and squashes, peppers and aubergines, carrots and parsnips, and small and large varieties of tomatoes.

If you have not the space or inclination to prepare a vegetable plot or raise beds considerable amounts of vegetables can be grown on growing tables or in large black builder’s buckets provided you mix up a rich water retaining compost mix. It is beneficial to work in a bag of worm compost and some TerraCottem moisture retaining gel. Re the latter have a look at the Terravida website via which one can buy direct. Agricultural trials have reduced irrigation needs by up to 70 percent.

Naturally shade is not only valuable if growing summer salad crops but also to enjoy Spain’s sunny weather from now to the end of autumn.

If you have no natural shade from mature trees there is still time to construct canvas or plant covered gazebos or organise a large shady terrace on the north and west sides of the house.

Your Pension Fund: Money in or money out?

FOLLOWING THE budget announcement on 17th March more people will have access to withdraw more cash from their pension funds after April 2015.

In fact measures were issued instantly to allow people drawing down money from their Pension Funds to draw down more than they were previously allowed to.

The message attempted to be sent out by the government is that each individual should have ‘freedom and control’ of their own pension pots.

This is great if the ‘individual’ has a strong understanding of the future with regards to life expectancy, future income requirements and inflation to name just a few factors. What is essentially evident now is the need for

a qualified professional to help people make the correct decisions for them.

Cynics would say this is a ploy to win votes, raise tax revenue quicker and reduce benefit claimants while at the same boost the economy with more money being made available to retirees and thus creating a ‘feel good factor’ as more holidays, cars are purchased and more home improvements are being bought with this sudden injection of cash availability. I would ask, what happens when the cash runs out for these individuals?

Now, even more than ever before, the importance of receiving advice and retirement planning before making a decision of what to do with your pension pot is absolutely critical.

Questions to ask are: Where will I live? What lump sum should be taken?

What are the tax implications? What about my partner? How much income will I need in 5, 10, 15 or 20 years’ time? What happens if the pot is empty at age 80 and I am still alive?

The Spanish public notary system LIABILITY OF a Spanish Public Notary in the purchase of a property with embargoes and charges WE ALWAYS inform clients, readers and friends, that in Spain it is extremely important to hire the services of an expert lawyer, familiar with all of the buying process in Spain, when buying or selling a real estate property.

As most people are aware, in Spain we have a notarial system and the completion of the purchase takes place before the public notary, so they assume he will check that everything is correct, and therefore there is no need to seek any other legal advice. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Spanish public notaries do not check, because it is not their obligation to do so.

For example, it is not their obligation to determine whether the property has an occupation license, what is its urban situation, the existence of urban discipline or penalty proceedings, the existence of outstanding debts or obligations for the urbani-zation of the area, the wording of the private purchase contract and the commitments agreed by the parties, etc.

Therefore, notary duty does not cover all aspects of the sale, it is limited to state on the Public Deed the

agreements and information provided by the parties, to check the land registry registration status, cadastral situation, debts on local tax (IBI, etc.), and warn about the necessity of paying taxes, etc.

Indeed, a recent court order from the Supreme Court of Spain confirmed a previous judgment against a notary for authorizing a sale of a property with a charge (embargo), without informing the buyer properly, forcing the notary to compensate the purchaser for damages with 2,450,000 euros.

The court understood that the land registry faxed the information of the existence of the embargo four days before the signature of the deed, and the notary must have received it, although the notary denied this.

The court concluded that in any case, the fact and truth is that the communication and information between land registry and notary was inadequate

The Tale of Harry, Hanks, The Coat and The Cloakroom Attendant!

PRETTY BOY Harry Styles is in the gossip columns so much, if I were so inclined Showbiz Goss could be entirely about him.

Having said that, todays lead story is indeed about our hapless Harry, and I use this word intentionally, as there´s something so mega embarrassing he got himself into earlier this year I just couldn´t resist it.

He was at an Eagles gig in Los Angeles and was sitting next to a top comedienne over there called Kathy Griffith who was afterwards quoted as saying “he was ruthlessly busting his b**ls, and he seemed very, very drunk!!” … not quite sure about the busting b**ls bit, but we all understand drunk Kathy. Then things start to heat up, big time!

It seems that Harry boy made his way backstage after the show as did our heroine Kathy, and as she walked about she saw Harry again and this time he was deep in

BRITNEY SPEARS´ returning to a more regular lifestyle is currently running at both really good and really bad. On the down side her father, the man who has legal control over his daughter, has forbidden Britney to marry boyfriend David Lucado … and on the up side her residency in Las Vegas has won critical acclaim. Sounds like daddy needs to up clean his act ... Clown!

conversation with Tom Hanks, and overheard the lad say to the American actor “Were you scared on the boat shooting Captain Phillips? ... Were you scared? It seemed so small,” to which Tom Hanks replied “Em … Harry! This is Kathy Griffin - she’s a comedienne, …” but sadly Hanks had to say it to drunk boy over and over, but even worse than that Harry mistook Griffith for the cloakroom attendant and kept handing her his coat ... no word of a lie!!

Kathy was great about it afterwards, but did admit “ I almost kept his coat as a souvenir after he repeatedly handed it to me … I was going to steal it but my boyfriend talked me out of it so I didn’t get arrested!”

I´m sure Harry the Hunk is not overtly pleased this story has surfaced on the global network, but he´s such a loveable rogue, I´m equally sure he won’t be considering going into hiding.

RICKY GERVAIS has been bandying his alter-ego David Brent about again saying “I´m thinking of filming a documentary of David Brent trying to be a pop star – he thinks it’s like Scorsese doing the Rolling Stones, but really it’s a Where Are They Now? ‘It’s going to be tragic!” Ricky then added ‘I love the songs, everyone knows they’re a spoof, but it’s great to be a pretend rock star for a day.” Rock on Ricky!!

YET ANOTHER kids TV show character has made it onto the big screen, so brace yourselves for another merchandise onslaught when Postman Pat : The Movie opens on May 23rd. In the storyline Pat enters a talent contest and sings, well Ronan Keating sings, and voices the postie, and yes, Pat now has an Irish accent!

Sounds like a bag of laughs … oh yes, and the nasty judge is called Simon Cowbell.

Reggae reaches Benidorm

Astro, Ali and Mickey are back together again

By Keith Nicol WITH SEVENTY million album sales behind them, UB40 are easily the world’s biggest selling reggae group in the world. If you want to hear that original sound again in person, you need only visit the Benidorm Palace on Sunday night, where original members Ali Campbell, Astro Wilson on vocals, trumpet and percussion plus keyboard player Mickey Virtue, are joined by eight other musicians on stage to make it a reggae night to remember.

Ali said in an interview with RTN. “I sat back and was quiet for five years, watching the band I helped found as a reggae band destroy itself, and when they decided to go country and western, Astro also left the band, contacted me, and we decided to reform UB40 along with Mickey, and play the music that UB40 was meant to play; Reggae.”

Ali was just finishing work on his new album when Astro contacted him so the two decided to remix a few of the tracks, add Astro’s unique vocal styling and the album is due to be released in the next month or so after their next single is released.

Ali has just finished recording a reggae version of Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ with Fun Loving Criminals and produced the video to accompany it last week. The first UB40 single featuring the original voices of UB40 have recorded their version of the Dennis

Brown single, ‘Silhouette’ to follow that up.

As coincidence would have it, Ali is recording it at Mickie Most’s Rak studio, where Most produced the same song as a chart topper for Herman’s Hermits back in 1962.

UB40 are on a World Tour, visiting the Benidorm Palace in Spain on their way to Portugal, having just performed in front of thousands in Papua, New Guinea, Kuala Lumpur, Cape Town and Johannesburg. Ali said, “I have no idea how long the tour will be, as dates are added every week, but we will be playing around the UK, Europe, India, Africa and even Hawaii. We are really looking forward to performing again in Spain and can promise the audience they will hear the true sound of UB40’s original vocalists. We’ll also be performing our new single Silhouette, plus Reggae Music, which we released as a download back in February but the concert will contain all of our hit records that sold over seventy million copies, on 24 albums that we produced over the past 28 years.”

Ali added, “Big love and respect to everyone and we look forward to making it a real reggae party night to remember.” UB40 perform at the Benidorm Palace on Sunday 27th April at 9.30pm. Carnival time in Jalon

By Jack Troughton JALON VALLEY HELP’S annual May Fayre takes place on Sunday 11th May and promises to be a colourful occasion with a ‘Carnival’ theme.

The event is held on the ‘Rastro’ car park in Jalon between 10am and 2pm and the area will be packed with stalls, attractions and entertainment for the charity’s biggest fundraising event on the calendar.

The popular Poco Loco Steel Band is again playing live and radio station Spectrum FM will be broadcasting from the fair.

HELP is presenting a prize for the best dressed stall as it is hoped everyone joins in the Carnival spirit and stallholders and visitors join in the fun.

Local schools in the Jalon Valley have also been asked to enter a competition with pupils creating their own carnival masks – the winners will earn 100€, 60€ and 30€ respectively for their schools. It is also hoped the AMPAs from each school – the parent teacher associations – will organise a stall for the big day to raise much needed funds.

Big brother THE FARMHOUSE was facing the sea, and the low calling of the cows in the barn during milking was pervading the salty air on a sunny but cold day. I had been called on my travels to visit a ninety year old woman who needed healing and who wanted to meet with me as she had heard what I do. No sooner was healing mentioned then she was ready for it. She had checked with her local priest that what I was going to do was holy, and luckily he had said that it would do her nothing but good, so we began a healing session in the farmhouse with her two daughters, one on each side.

Healing came very quickly, and I could feel a lot of heat coming through from my palms, as is natural. The atmosphere in the farmhouse seemed to begin to change, and then there was a stillness of the air which seemed to be electrically charged.

Healing was taking place on all levels, and I concentrated on sending this healing to just where it was specifically needed in the joints, especially the hips. All was going so well when suddenly a presence came into the room. It was a tall dark haired blue eyed man, in his late twenties and he had a smile on his handsome face.

Both attending daughters gasped and looked at each other, but my client was needful of my continuing healing so I did not stop for anything, though I too was aware that we were not alone and that someone in Spirit was near us. The farm alarm started to ring in three minute bursts continually as it had detected the electricity generated by a homecoming spirit here on Earth. Healing over we sat all four of us in the sunlight and it was some time before anyone spoke. My client had lost her only son several years ago, and he was twenty seven when he passed over as a fever took his life. He had made a decision to come back to his family home and to take part in the healing of his Mother. It is no wonder that his sisters gave each other such a look, they were small when their big brother passed over, but they had witnessed that he had returned to help heal their Mother through me.

I have to tell you that the alarms continued to ring until our Spirit entity decided to leave. My client has taken well to her healing and is more energetic than ever, her arthritis is bad in winter and for her body a little summer came early to heal her nicely. Both sisters have had successful conversations with their brother in Spirit. All is well on the farm.

Preventing hearing problems IT IS estimated that more than 2,500,000 people over the age of 65 in Spain alone suffer from Presbycusis - a gradual loss of hearing: this figure will likely increase in the coming years due to longer life expectancy and an increasingly aging population.

Hearing loss can affect any age, although older people are the most affected.

Studies indicate that this condition increases with age and those affected gradually lose about 9 decibels per decade from the age of 40. The data, collected in the first White Paper on presbycusis in Spain, suggests that hearing loss in those over 55 years of age (the age at which problems generally start to appear) is the third chronic disease after hypertension and osteoarthritis.

In Spain it is estimated that Presbycusis affects approximately 25 % of older people aged 65 to 75.

After 75, the incidence can reach up to 65% and from age 80 reaches 80% of the population.

The genetic background may be a key in the development of Presbycusis. However, there are other risk factors that may predispose us to getting it, including: having worked in noisy environments; suffering from cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension; or from having type II Diabetes.

WELL, WHO would have thought that in an Essential Spanish course we would spend so much time on the meaning of the word lo?

It’s one of those fiddly little words that give us so much trouble. In fact if we could abolish any word from Spanish that contained two letters or less, we poor English speakers would be a lot happier!

So, the task at hand today is to look at the word lo when it means “it”, and how it can be tacked on to the end of other words. Lo meaning “it” can stand on its own in many sentences, but they are a bit more complicated to explain, so for now we will just see how it can be linked onto the end of the infinitive of verbs. After that we will see how la, los and las can work in the same way, and what they mean.

In the last article we saw the following sentences: Quiero beberlo - “I want to drink it”; Necesito limpiarlo - “I need to clean it” and Puedo verlo - “I can see it”.

Lo here is replacing something that it already understood. Its grammatical label is a “pronoun,” something that goes instead of a noun. For example if we say: “I want to drink it,” the speaker and listener must already know what “it” stands for otherwise it doesn’t make sense. In fact the full sentence was “Quiero beber el vino” - I want to drink the wine.

Now then, what I haven’t yet told you is that lo in fact refers to things that are masculine and singular (oh no, here we go again!)

El vino is a masculine singular word, which is why lo is the correct pronoun to replace it.

Sunset Cruises

If we wish to say “it” about something that is feminine and singular, we use the word la. Here are two examples which should make this clear.

Voy a cocinar la tortilla - “I’m going to cook the tortilla” Voy a cocinarla - “I’m going to cook it”.

No puedo cerrar la ventana - “I can’t close the window” No puedo cerrarla - “I can’t close it”.

And to complete this tale, we can now look briefly at how to make the plural of “it”, that is “them”, using los when referring to masculine plural and las for feminine plural. Again clear examples ought to do the trick.

Me gusta ver las películas - “I like watching the films” Me gusta verlas - “I like watching them” ¿Necesito firmar los papeles? - “Do I need to sign the papers?” ¿Necesito firmarlos? - “Do I need to sign them?”

I think that is all relatively easy to understand in theory. The big challenge of course is remembering when you’re speaking whether what you are referring to is masculine or feminine, or even singular or plural. This actually takes all of us a very long time and we make plenty of mistakes along the way. You should never worry about this as you will always be understood by using the masculine form lo.

Remember the whole point is that both speaker and listener already know what is being referred to!

THE KIDDIES’ boat party on Easter Monday was a great success.

EASTER FAMILY fun was the flavour of the day when the monthly charity auction got under way at Jaspas Bar – with 775€ raised for the Javea Red Cross ambulance appeal.

By Jack Troughton ORGANISED BY Gwenda Robinson of Rentlemania and the Javea bar, the sale was delayed a week until Easter Sunday to make it a real holiday occasion – while supporting ‘Ambulancia Javea’, the community based project helping raise the 64,000€ needed for a new emergency vehicle.

And an Easter Egg Hunt insured children went home with an armful of chocolate, adults were also given mini eggs, and everyone enjoyed a traditional Easter bonnet competition.

At the end of a fun-filled day Gwenda presented the proceeds of the auction to a delighted Sandy Tsalikidis of Ambulancia Javea.

By Jack Troughton TAI CHI on the beach proved to be a cocktail of fun for members of U3A Vall del Pop when they were put through their genteel paces on the sand at Calpe on Good Friday.

Group leaders Krystina and Mike – who regularly use the beach – took members of the Tai Chi group for a workout and practice the movements learnt at Jalon.

Everyone agreed the seaside was a special place to concentrate and enjoy the traditional moves of Chi Kung and Tai Chi. And once the sun got too hot, 14 of the group headed to the shade of a nearby restaurant to enjoy a relaxing lunch.

Cash Gen download DEAR AUNTY: I am in desperate need of you help once more. I run Windows 8.1 on my laptop. Last week a download called ‘Cashgen’ appeared in C:\User\cash gen. I think it may be a Microsoft programme (but it may not be). It appears in lots of my files. An Icon has even appeared on my smart TV. Since its introduction my shortcut to my external hard drive has stopped working. The hard drive does not appear in devices so I can no longer use it and the external hard drive used to record on my smart TV is not available anymore. I have looked in the uninstall programme to uninstall it but it is not there! I have tried to find out about it on the internet without success. Can you please tell me what this programme is? Can I uninstall it without causing too much trouble to other programmes? If so please could you explain how to go about this? Many thanks. Blocking adverts HOLA AUNTY: For about two years I have successfully watched ITV I/Player via a proxy in the UK and ITV did not show adverts. The same old question

IF A player gains no advantage from an action which was unintentional - should it result in a penalty?

By Tony Myles AS THE excitement of the first major subsides there remains one incident that is still worthy of mention. Mainly because nobody noticed it!

Just a few weeks ago I wrote in this paper about the ludicrous situation where a player makes an unconscious action that falls foul of the rules and, as it is inconsequential, nobody is aware that it has happened - including the golfer in most cases. That is with the exception of the TV viewer who is less interested in the sport and more motivated by the opportunity of spotting an infringement.

So it was that Luke Donald walked off the 18th at Augusta feeling disappointed at his 77, only to be advised that he was to be penalised by a further two shots. What had he done? Kicked the ball nearer the hole? Thrown it out of a bunker? Sworn at the referee? No none of those.

In his own words - “ Got a 2 shot penalty on the 9th today.

Left my bunker shot in the bunker and touched the sand before my next shot. Pretty dumb mistake” If you add to this the subject of a recent Bay Radio conversation with Campbell when he confirmed that if a ball comes to rest in a bunker against a rake - that some other player has left in the sand, there is a possibility that you could be penalised by one shot for something over which you have NO control or influence.

The purists (including Campbell) will rally behind the rules and call me a heretic for even daring to be disdainful of them but I remain heretical whilst these farcical situations maintain.

So will my soap-boxing have any affect? None whatsoever, but at least any non-golfer seeing these episodes will at least be aware that there are golfers who acknowledge the absurdity of some of the rules.

Tony M - Did you see Pablo jumping into the water in Malaysia?

I must allocate some space to the incredible events that beset our local man Pablo Larazabal last week in the Maybank Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur . The 30 year old pro from Barcelona was chugging along quite nicely when, at his fifth hole, he was attacked by a swarm or hornets.

Authorities on the subject confirm that these are three times the size of our bees and so their sting must be equally more painful. Pablo threw off his shoes and shirt and ran into the water alongside the fairway. Incredibly after some local medical attention, he returned to finish the hole with a birdie and went on the complete the round in 68. He followed this with a third round 70 and a final round 67 to secure 9 under and a share of eighth place. An incredible result and in fact one of his best of the season.

In passing I must offer congratulations to Lee Westwood who completed the competition in 18 under and 7 shots clear of his challengers.
