The colour of purple by Jack Troughton PAINSTAKING RESTORATION of a 17th Century painting discovered on the Costa Blanca gives weight to growing evidence it is an original by a young Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Flemish artist and diplomat. The picture ‘Lamentation of the Virgin, St Magdalene and St John over the body of Christ’ was purchased as a copy in a Christie’s auction and is now in private ownership in Spain. Her mantle is blue.” Pigment tests on the Costa Blanca picture have shown it contains colours available to 17th Century artists, while the Prado painting – allegedly a later copy – contains “anachronisms”.
