The front page of the Daily Mail featured dozens of British pensioners now retired in Spain in various night spots and pubs enjoying a high life in the sun drinking and dancing until dawn under the headline: ‘This is how your UK fuel allowance is being spent.” The article also suggests that pensioners in the sun are frittering their children’s inheritances in a debauched oldage-blowout, profiled in a Channel 5 documentary screened on 10th July entitled ‘OAPs Behaving Badly’.

RTN has received a number of calls from angry readers who feel they are being unjustly pilloried.

Asbestos crisis in schools THE PREMISES of at least 30 schools in the Valencian region require harmful asbestos to be removed according to the DC Federation of Teaching.

by Jan Gamm Asbestos has been used in the construction of many school buildings throughout the region, mostly in ceilings, with a high level of deterioration that increases the chances of pupils and teachers suffering exposure to harmful asbestos fibres. The substance has been banned as a health risk for a number of years.

URGENT A complaint has been lodged with the prosecutor to have the asbestos removed urgently, a process that must be carried out within a controlled environment. When disturbed, fibres inhaled from asbestos can stay

in the lungs for many years, leading to serious health problems.

EFFECTS Asbestos falls within a group of minerals with microscopic fibres that are resistant to heat, fire and chemicals and do not conduct electricity. It has been widely used in the construction, automotive and other industries before the extent of its toxic properties was fully apprehended. Teenager dies in rollercoaster tragedy

By Jan Gamm AN 18-YEAR-OLD from Iceland died on Monday after falling 15 metres from the ‘Inferno’ rollercoaster in the Egyptian sector of Terra Mitica theme park in Benidorm.

The Inferno ride, which was introduced at the park in 2007, produces 360º turns and travels at speeds of up to 40mph. The young man, identified as A F Sveinn, was riding

the rollercoaster with his father and brother when his harness failed, flinging him to the ground and causing horrific multiple fractures and head injuries.

Emergency services arrived promptly at the scene at around 4.30pm but the youngster sadly died of cardiac arrest on the way to hospital.

This is Terra Mitica’s first fatality since it opened in 2000, park management

confirmed on Monday that daily inspections are carried out and that all rides are properly certified. In Monday’s tragedy, the rod and pin securing the victim’s harness came loose. As yet the cause of the failure has not been established.

An initial court appearance in Benidorm on Wednesday by the family of the deceased has revealed that compensation will be sought in the event of a conviction.

23 million Euros investment for Denia Harbour moorings expansion

by Jan Gamm THE SOCIETY of Dénia Marina El Portet, which operates an inland marina in the port of Denia and holds its concession until 2034, announced on Wednesday that ambitious projects upgrading pontoons, commercial premises and car parks will be completed against an investment of €23 million.

The company’s aim is to improve the marina facilities in Denia, resulting in one of the best tourism and nautical sports centres in the Mediterranean.

POPULAR The infrastructure around the Denia Marina is already popular with visitors, with spectacular surroundings and the added benefit of the town’s amenities, with its popular shopping areas and constantly evolving restaurant trade, irresistible for local foodies who appreciate the town’s excellent seafood and pavement eateries.

The town has always been popular with tourists but in recent years has developed a truly nautical personality along with a certain urban chic that has attracted major retailers to set up along the Marques de Campo, Denia’s busy main shopping street: tree-lined and heaving with well-heeled ‘fashionistas’ seeking summer bargains. And the Marina, when finished, will be one of the largest in the Valencian community.

A second unfortunate theme park accident

FOLLOWING THE tragic death of an 18-year-old Icelandic boy after he fell from the ‘Inferno’ rollercoaster in Terra Mitica, a second child was injured on Tuesday after falling from a statue at the Terra Natura Park ‘Temple of Tigers’ in Benidorm. The four-year-old, who was visiting the park with his Russian parents, had climbed a wooden ornamental statue representing a Hindu goddess 1.5m in height but the figure toppled and fell onto the child, who was rushed to Alicante General Hospital by SAMU. He remains in hospital in an induced coma. His condition is described as “serious but not life-threatening.” Terra Natura management has stressed that climbing the ornamental statues in the park is prohibited but nonetheless are most concerned for the child and remain in constant contact with the parents via a translator. A statement was released assuring the public that the park exercises stringent safety measures, expressing regret over the accident but stressing that the event was completely “random” and “unfortunate.”

By Irena Bodnarec THE LONG awaited demolition of the building ´Las Terrazas´ - located on the junction of Avd Europa and Avd Mediterraneo is finally complete. The bulldozers moved in at 8am on Wednesday morning to finally bring down the last remaining building, fourteen years after the demolition order was given! The majority were bulldozed in 2011 but one building remained - the one which housed the electricity transformer which provided power to the surrounding properties.

There then began a standoff between Iberdrola and the land owners as to who was responsible for the cost of moving the transformer. Back in the year 2000, a technical report found that the buildings were contaminated with asbestos and ordered their evacuation. In 2004 the Supreme Court confirmed the findings but legal disputes continued until 2009. Then in 2011 the court authorized the City Council to proceed with the demolition which then came to a standstill over the transformer situation. Now at long last the site has been cleared and we will await to see what will replace it!

Spain’s banks trim branches to 1980 levels

BANKS THROUGHOUT Spain have reduced their branch networks to 1980 levels.

by Jan Gamm IN 2013 a staggering 816 branch offices of major banks were closed with job losses amounting to 3,000 and reducing the combined total of branches to 14,063 for the whole of Spain.

The number of domestic banks in Spain in 2000 was 88: now there are only 57, while foreign-owned establishments rose from 51 to 86.

The majority of customers prefer the personal service offered by their local branch, most admitting that they have turned to online banking rather than travel to their bank’s head office. And more than 80% of bank employees confess they have no confidence in their long term job security.

Well that’s one way to travel!

BORDER POLICE continue to discover weird and resourceful ways for immigrants attempting to enter Spain illegally. One Moroccan man was discovered clinging to the underside of a bus entering the Port outpost in Motril, Granada. The 32-year-old was found to be uninjured despite travelling several miles just inches from the road surface.

He was promptly removed to an immigration centre. More stowaways were found curled up in a car dashboard that had been emptied of its electrics and fittings to accommodate them. On discovery they complained of severe cramp and were given First Aid before being transferred to a holding centre.

Sex acts in public bars criticised by hospitality authority ‘MAMADING’, A Spanish term for female customers performing fellatio in public bars in return for free drinks and other prizes, is under attack from police and council authorities as they attempt to prevent the lewd practice spreading throughout popular tourist resorts.

Nightlife sector bosses have slammed pubs and bars that encourage such behaviour and have taken steps to prevent a ‘fellatio contest’ advertised on Facebook taking place in a Barcelona venue. Secretary General of Catalunia hospitality association Fecasarm, Joaquim Boadas, said: “This practice, although not widespread, is illegal, sexist, demeaning and does not comply with local licensing laws in addition to causing an uncontrolled intake of alcohol. It is unlawful.”

A MAN was seriously gored by a bull on Monday in Denia during the San Fermin Bous a la Mar bull-running event in which the animals are run into the sea. The man was already on the ground when the bull impaled him through the rectum. He was transferred to hospital and is being treated for his injuries. Animal rights groups have campaigned for many years to have the event banned.

by Jan Gamm LADIES ALL over the country have been bitten by the sewing bug in a bid to help brave kiddies undergoing chemotherapy as part of their cancer treatment - by sewing natty little hats that cover the distressing effects of chemo programmes.

The initiative started in Madrid and was so well received that ladies in other regions have taken up their sewing needles in solidarity.

LOSS One of the most upsetting side effects

of chemotherapy is the dreaded hair loss – hard enough to bear for adults, and for little children even more distressing. Some of these kids are amazing and put up with the most aggressive treatments with serenity and a cheerful smile. Kimo-Kaps help widen those smiles and the children even swap their hats for fun.

First fatalities of the summer

THE FIRST fatalities of the summer include two swimmers, the first a 70-year-old woman swimming at the Arenal Beach in Javea this week. She suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after leaving the water and was attended by Samu emergency staff but they could not save her life. In a second tragedy an elderly man, also 70, lost his life while snorkelling in the calm waters of a cove near Santa Pola. He was pulled from the sea by fellow swimmers. His wife was also at the beach.

Army ordered to reinstate soldier on cannabis THE SUPREME Court has ordered the Spanish Army high command to reinstate a soldier discharged three years ago for taking cannabis. The 29-year-old soldier from Huelva, stationed in Madrid, had received a leg wound and was taking cannabis as “the only effective pain relief.” The defending counsel confirmed that the army is also required to reimburse three years of salary.

There have been a number of reports of individuals seeing Khrystyna in Benitachell and also in a cocktail bar on Javea’s Arenal, but the sightings have all turned out to be red herrings and efforts to establish her whereabouts have so far come to nothing. Natalya and Bohda, who continue to search bars and nightclubs exhaustively, are again appealing to the public for information on Khrystyna or on anyone who might be implicated in her disappearance. Not such a happy 90th for Fred FRED JOINT moved to Spain with his late wife back in 1989 and set up home in La Siesta, Torrevieja. His wife passed away in 2008 but he continues to enjoy life in Spain and has just turned ninety.

by Keith Nicol WHEN HIS wife died, two of his children brought him back to England to live with them. However, he could not adjust to living back in the UK so returned to Spain. It was obvious he needed care and he could not move in with his other son Terry, as Fred was beginning to show early signs of dementia and in his head was still living with his wife in La Siesta.

Care4U, based in San Javier, took over the task of looking after him. Terry said, “They have been fantastic in looking after him.

Care4U, run by Gillian Horsburgh and her team of carers, is, going way beyond normal expectation to make sure life is comfortable for Dad.” With the cost of any private care being expensive, and few residential homes being available where English is spoken in Spain, the family sought assistance from the various ex services association to see if they would help with his care. Fred spent most of his working years in the RAF, serving with them for around 30 years and retired as a Warrant Officer in about 1982.

Terry added, “Back when my mother died my sister and my brother approached virtually all ex Service charities but not one charity actually said they could or would help.

This included the British Legion in England, Saffa and RAF BF. We contacted them all. Locally, The Royal British Legion does not handle such matters, so they put me in touch with the head office in England, who were just not interested.”

Every little bit of help counts and eventually last year they received £50 a week from the RAF BF. Suddenly this year they stopped paying it, without any explanation, even though nothing had improved financially for Fred.

They have now refused to help further.

Although they will not discuss the matter on individual cases with RTN, RAF BF keep asking for bank details and other financial matters from Fred and his family. All these have been supplied, along with detailed explanations that Fred’s revenues continue to dwindle year by year: the family do not understand what problem the RAF BF has.

At 90, Fred really needs 24-hour care and any help from benefits organisations would be of great help. RTN has contacted various agencies to ask for an update on Fred’s situation but they are not allowed to comment on individual cases. In the meantime, Fred’s family continue to support him in every way they can and hope to hear some positive news from one of the ex-forces organisations.

Annual General Mauling ALLOW ME to vent my frustration about our urbanisation’s most recent, and infamous Annual General Meeting.

My husband and I have gone to it these past couple of years and it has been quite an endurance test sitting on hard plastic chairs, sitting through four hours of ranting, shouting, screaming and arguing. At one stage it seems a Spanish gentleman, and I use that term with considerable grace, started having a bozo eruption, shouting and his face grew beet red.

About 90% of the speaking was in Spanish with some translation for German residents, but nothing for English property owners, basically nothing more than a pooling of ignorance. We really felt like foreigners in that meeting. Although we have property that belongs to us, we really did not feel we belonged.

As someone much smarter than me once said, “Common sense is not very common.” Whoever came up with that saying must have attended a few if not many AGMs for urbanisations on the coast.

No choice but to pay unless...

ALLAN DUHIG has complained as an OAP about tax being claimed in UK on his private pension. Being a tax resident in Spain, in the circumstances which he describes, he must make tax returns in Spain and pay any tax here: there is no choice in that. So instead of complaining that HMRC have got it wrong, he needs to ‘put his house in order’ by informing HMRC that he is tax resident in Spain, and when receives the paperwork, take it to the Hacienda and register here. He will then be exempt from tax in UK. N.B: Tax must be paid in UK on Government Pensions (police, military etc.) and on rental income from property in UK. All other income is taxable ONLY in Spain. YOU HAVE no idea how happy it makes me knowing the World Cup is on. It’s a lovely evening and I’m enjoying the cool sea breeze and the quietness. Yes, the quietness. No blasting, irritating bar music from some pseudo performer bellowing off key renditions of some sordid Elvis Presley song.

Yes, the quietness. No inconsiderate people and their unruly children screaming and making a racket in the community swimming pool.

Yes, the quietness. And it dawned on me that it is quiet because the World Cup is on and most folks are at home glued to the TV watching

the World Cup. I have never been a fan of the World Cup, but since it is keeping the wretched bar music at bay, and the children and adults alike who act childishly, screaming in the swimming pool, I now consider myself a huge fan of the World Cup. Yes, the quietness. I wish the World Cup would last all summer. I wish it was on every year!

Spain’s flagrant corruption among its elected officials, until now only of ‘epidemic proportions’, seems to be approaching pandemic levels, with more rotten apples appearing daily among its elected representatives.

If voter apathy was widespread before, it’ll take another nosedive next time around. Reminds me of the saying: ‘If we separate The Good from The Bad, we´ll be lucky to come out with Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Abraham Lincoln’.

Torrevieja Resident missing

It’s feared he is suffering from dementia and has wondered off, not remembering who he is or where he lives. Primarily due to a Facebook campaign that has now spread into Spanish and International Newspapers, everyone is asked to be on the lookout for this gentleman.

Guardia Civil has launched an appeal for information on José Francisco Juárez López. The 64 year-old is described as being “tall”, with long white hair, which he frequently wears as a ponytail and is well known among local residents and visitors because for many years he worked in a toy shop on calle Fotógrafo Darblade, in the city centre.

Friends and family are becoming increasingly concerned about his disappearance. They are asking for any information, even going back more than a month, as to when he might have been last seen or if anyone has seen a man matching his description. Froilan starts summer school YOUNG FELIPE Juan Froilan, elder son of the Infanta Elena, nephew of King Felipe and King Juan Carlos’ eldest grandchild, is to spend the month of July at summer school brushing up on his English and sporting skills at Siguenza (Guadalajara). The 15-year-old will study for several hours each day with two hours allocated for sport and weekend outings available as a reward for good conduct. Summer school is a popular choice for youngsters in Spain. Froilan is reputed to be ‘a bit of a handful’, consistently landing himself in mischief, most memorably in April 2012 when he accidentally shot himself in the foot with a 36 calibre shotgun.

Breakfast TV show broadcast from Benidorm

The first day was Wednesday, when they set up around the poolside of the Sol Pelicanos hotel – now better recognized as the fictitious Solana resort. Yesterday they were at the Palm Beach Hotel and today, they are on the Levante beach front, until about 9am. Hundreds turned up to be in

the background while presenter Ranvir Singh, accompanied by Dr Hilary Jones and fashion correspondent Mark Heyes broadcast live segments throughout the morning – with a holiday theme to the show. Dr Hilary held pop up clinic sessions, answering questions about holiday health while Mark did 2 spectacular holiday makeovers as well as a holiday fashion guide for the ladies. You may catch them around as they are still here over the weekend, enjoying some Benidorm hospitality.

Benidorm celebrates San Fermín

HUNDREDS OF residents and tourists dressed in white and the customary red and white scarves attended the launch of ‘chupinazo’ for the Festival of San Fermin at the Levante Beach on Sunday under a sweltering sun. This year the Benidorm Handball Club lit the touch paper setting off the ‘big bang’ at the Tambourine Restaurant at 12 noon, also attended by Benidorm’s mayor, Agustin Navarro. Traditional dancing by the Navarre Jacks and choral entertainment by Canta Tudela made the day perfect. Festivities will continue until Monday 14th July.

Gay Pride invades Madrid THOUSANDS OF supporters of Gay Pride took to the streets of the capital last weekend to celebrate in a rainbow tide of raucous fun and laugher. More than 30 floats paraded through the city centre under the slogan: ‘We march for those who cannot’. The popular parade, fast becoming one of the city’s most popular calendar events, is organised by Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals of Madrid (Cogam) and the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (FELGTB), organisations that stand behind ‘human rights that should be respected regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity’.

Christian Fellowship appeals for kitchen help!

FOR SEVERAL years now Calpe Christian Fellowship Church has sponsored a young girl named Sindixhoj in Albania through the Christian charity Adopt-a-Child.

by Patricia Thompson The charity works in Guatemala and Albania amongst some of the world’s poorest families, providing nutritional meals for the children and basic dental and medical care for the whole family.

Miriam Anning from Calpe Christian Fellowship recently returned from her second visit to the Adopta-Child centre in Albania. She was able to meet up with Sindixhoj and some of the nearly 1,000 children fed there every week.

The meals are prepared in the Adopt-a-Child centre in Pogradec, ferried in specially adapted containers to the four feeding centres in the mountain villages of north-eastern Albania near the Macedonian border.

These are the only nutritional meals most of the children receive.

With no benefits system or government support, families must eke out a living from the land or work for a pittance in extremely dangerous chromium mines.

The money to feed these children comes from a sponsorship programme.

People are encouraged to pay for the child’s food and also to write to them on a regular basis.

There are many children waiting for sponsors but no child, sponsored or not, is ever turned away.

Miriam noted that although the kitchens were spotless they were void of modern conveniences taken for norm in the western world, with no dishwasher or food preparation equipment. Imagine having to wash, peel and chop 2,000 carrots or potatoes every week by hand! Yet all the staff, many of whom came through the feeding programme

themselves, are totally dedicated to the job in hand, never complaining of the hard work.

The Christian Fellowship’s aim is to raise enough cash to equip the centre with a commercial food processing machine, dishwasher, food mixer and other equipment.

New Campsite for Villa Joyosa

By Irena Bodnarec WORK HAS started on a new campsite, located at del Torres – close to the beach and covering an area of 18,000 square meters. The site will have space for 500 plots spread over 7,500 square meters with 4,400 allocated as green space, 3,500 meters for parking and paths in addition to sanitary blocks and other facilities. This project adds to another new camp site, which is planned to be located at the Costera Mayor, an area near to Montiboli and offer a further 1,000 plots and will be a great boost to the local economy.

Javea U3A cave visit

NINETY MEMBERS of Javea U3A’s Spanish Culture & Cuisine group had an opportunity to spend a summer’s evening with friends in a unique setting – a natural cave that is 150 million years old!

The event was held over three separate evenings in June/July at Casa Calleja, a unique home originally created by the Javea-born artist Eladio Calleja, beside the Cueva de las Calaveras in Benidoleig at the foot of the mountains and overlooking the orange groves.

Current owners Sheigra and Steve welcomed guests with a glass of wine, followed by a short talk by group leader Angela Chantry on the history of the Cueva de las Calaveras and the artist,

sculptor and poet, Eladio Calleja.

Guests were able to view some of his sculptures and also pictures painted by the artist in his studio adjacent to the house.

After the talk guests enjoyed a selection of canapés – a most delightful and unusual evening organised by the group’s leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie.

The 6th July market, which started at 7.30pm, was a huge success, held at the Jesus Pobre Riu Rau, with superb live entertainment, plenty for the kids to see and do and loads of delicious food items to take home. More than 60,000 folk showed up on Sunday to sample the best of the market’s produce and to enjoy traditional Valencian folk dancing in what is essentially a community event for all the family. Calpe U3A helps out the Maite Boronat Centre

MEMBERS OF the Calpe U3A lent a helping hand by topping up cash raised by projects made by students of Calpe’s Maite Bornat Craft Centre.

The money was used to purchase a much-needed guillotine for the Centre, which will enable the students to undertake more ambitious projects in the future.

Cycle path open for business: if you can find it

Whoops - romance goes too far

Unlike other bike friendly cities, Torrevieja does not have anywhere to cycle along the seafront

by Keith Nicol RTN READER John T asked us about Torrevieja’s much heralded new cycle paths and where they are because it seems that the Town Hall have not published any follow up information on the subject.

He wrote: “Several times in the last few months the local papers have included articles about the new cycle routes being built in and around Torrevieja. This morning I went to the Tourist Information office on the sea front to ask if they had any maps showing the new routes.

I was told there are no new cycle paths, although your article said they were planning 85 km of them.”

John is not the only one scratching his head as visitors to Torrevieja, especially from popular cycling regions as Scandinavia, Holland and Belgium, seem to be blissfully unaware that Torrevieja has any.

As pointed out by a few local cyclists, apart from painting a few symbols on the road and the addition of a few small signs with 30km symbol, that’s all that local cyclists have to look forward to.

The majority of money spent on the project went to improving the pavements in the area; however cyclists are not allowed to ride on this.

The ride out of Torrevieja, from beside the Inmaculada Church, is a slow

uphill ride along C/ Bazan. The ride into Torrevieja means snaking around the back streets behind the Windmill and looking for signs and road markings: this is the only thing that has changed; nothing else.

AS THE summer continues to heat up one young party-going couple decided to celebrate the spectacular romantic sunrise by having sex on the bathing raft anchored just off the Arenal Beach in Javea. Unfortunately the raft is anchored not far from the public beach, where their passionate encounter was captured on several mobile phones and promptly circulated on the internet. The raft is a popular rendezvous point for ardent couples but this is the first time such passion has gone viral.

Spain a nation of rotting teeth THE ANNUAL study ‘Prevention Hygiene Habits in Spain’ has revealed that Spanish teeth are among the unhealthiest in Europe with more than 50% unable to attend dental appointment due to lack of funds. The country’s dental health was worrying enough in 2013 when that figure was 46% - now more than 62% of citizens attend only a yearly check-up and many do not follow up with recommended treatment as they are too broke to fund it. And 30% of Spaniards are afraid of the dentist.

Acrobats at Jávea Port craft fair CROWDS AT the Port in Javea were entertained this week by a pair of professional acrobats turning summersaults, juggling and executing hairraising flips through the streets in return for pennies in a hat!

The shows, performed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, were part of the Javea Craft Fair, featuring stalls of home-made original craft items: leather; glass engraving; copper beating; girafants (long-legged elephants if you must know...); crochet animals and dolls as well as original hats (20s style) and skirts - an open air gallery but without those hefty gallery prices.

Spectacular Opening of San Javier Jazz with George Benson

by Keith Nicol SAN JAVIER Jazz XVII began with as a bit of a novelty: 16 year old Slovenian guitarist Andreas Varady, who is on tour with his idol, George Benson. After a short break, capacity audience gave a huge welcome and ovation to Pittsburgh guitarist George Benson as he graced the stage on the opening night of the festival in Almansa Park Auditorium, San Javier (Murcia).

Although Benson was promoting his new album ‘Inspiration’, dedicated to the memory of Nat King Cole, “Nature Boy” was the only track from the album that he performed. Instead the audience was treated to an array of his most popular numbers including “In Your Eyes”, “Turn Your Love Around”, “Kisses In The Moonlight”, “Moody’s Mood” and “Lady Love Me (One More Time)” finishing the 90 minute set with “Feel like making love” and “Bring me the night”. With 1,800 on their feet and screaming for “more”, George Benson returned to perform for another 20 minutes of great musical memories finishing the evening with “On Broadway”.

A mix of Reggae and Jazz, laced with good humour and great musicianship greeted the audience on Monday with the first visit to the festival of Bobby McFerrin. McFerrin brought with him a great six piece band and offered a high-quality musical concert in which his group proved to be very well put together. The performance was based on his latest album, “Spirityouall”. McFerrin presented a total of 26 songs and then produced one of the evening’s magic moments when his daughter Madison came on stage to

perform “Roda”, one of the most popular songs of Gilberto Gil, with Bobby imitating the bass along with the deliciously sweet vocal performance from Madison.

McFerrin spread a lot of joy and happiness on Monday and the groove continues tonight with Lluís Coloma Septeto and the very different show of Lucky Peterson.

Careline Dance School delights audience

Pupils and teacher Suzanna Mace deserved the applause from delighted family and

friends who were present in the audience.

Careline Dance School, established in February 2013, caters for all ages at all levels, from junior modern to adult tap: classes are held at Careline’s Theatre.

Suzanna, an accredited teacher of dance, has taken part in and choreographed Careline Theatre’s last six popular pantomimes and will be doing so again for their autumn

production of ‘Lest We Forget - A Walk Down Memory Lane’, commemorating the 100th anniversary of WWI from 16th -18th October at the Careline Theatre in Alcalali.

Laura pictured with her new look, has donated her 45cm locks to the Little Princess Trust in the UK, which makes wigs for children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment.

Tournament Winners with Campbell Lamont

by Jan Gamm HELP OF Denia and Marina Alta could not have wished for a more perfect day or perfect setting for this year’s Charity Golf event organised by Campbell Lamont Golf at Oliva Nova Golf Club.

A great turnout of 130 golfers began with a shotgun start at 9.45am under blue skies and an impressive 4,500€ was raised for the charity.

Chilled refreshments made available by HELP volunteers Pat Lee Patton and Maureen Young were most welcome and later golfers and their supporters were treated to a three course meal in the clubhouse.

Candy Wright, Vice President of HELP of Denia and Marina Alta, thanked golfers, sponsors and HELP volunteers who supported the event both on the day and prior to the event: without these people it would not have been the success that it was.

U3A Moraira-Teulada Quiz Group Celebrates its 100th Birthday

THE U3A Moraira Quiz Group was started in 2009 by Helen and Les Coughtrey and has just celebrated its 100th Meeting.

Les & Helen have consistently come up with pages of questions, helped out occasionally by Malcolm and Julie Burman - there have been a lot of laughs and new friends made.

The original eight Group members are still attending.

So at great expense Gold Medals – well, choccie ones - were given out to these stalwarts!

Bottles of wine are given to the winning team and the runners up, with bars of KitKats for the losers - sometimes the losing prize is more coveted! The group meets every two weeks, on this occasion a BBQ followed at Sol Park Restaurant on the terrace. Les and Helen are truly deserving and enthusiastic Group Leaders.

Herbs: useful features of Spanish gardens BEFORE STARTING to write this week’s column I counted the number of perennial herbs growing in our garden and the annual herbs sown in pots in the semi-shade outside the kitchen door: there were almost forty varieties.

Many are used for cooking, refreshing infusions and natural remedies for plants and humans. No wonder herbs have been essential feature of Spanish gardens since time memorial. And most importantly many withstand extreme summer and winter temperatures well.

Herbs can be fitted into gardens of all sizes in a number of ways: Planted in pots or larger containers, either within the garden or conveniently by the kitchen door: Or in a patio courtyard or the terrace of an apartment or penthouse…

In a dedicated herb garden with a squared, wagon wheel or raised spiral, or medieval tied knot design.

Alongside the vegetable plot or paths.

Mixed with alpines and succulents in a rockery.

Mixed into the front and mid-depth of a mixed perennial/shrub bed.

Creeping thyme and dichondra as lawns in shady areas.

As internal hedges: Rosemary, Bay and Lavender are especially useful.

Mints are best planted in large sunken pots or barrels as the roots can spread evasively. Or build up a collection of different leaved and flavoured varieties in a cluster of pots or containers.

In the vegetable garden borage, cultivated and wild

garlic, onions, fennel and artichokes not only brighten up a plot but are also useful companion herbs that protect vegetables from plaques such as carrot fly, black and white fly and swarming beetles. There we also have a large patch of comfrey. It has two important uses for us. Fermented in a plastic barrel it produces a very useful plant feed. As a poultice it can help to accelerate the curing of sprains, cracked bones and signs of gout.

HOW TO PLANT AND CARE FOR HERBS The basic rules can be summarised as follows: Plant in water retentive but well draining fairly rich, gritty soil: herbs dislike heavy clayey soils or being waterlogged…

Keep all new plants damp until deep tap roots have developed. This may take a year or two. Once established, most perennial herbs require little watering except in very dry situations during the hottest summer weeks.

We don’t fertilize herbs except annuals in pots. A comfrey and nettle decoction seems to do the trick.

Trim to shape as they grow. Trimmings can be used immediately, dried, or used as cuttings for propagation.

As highlighted in my latest book ‘Using Less Water in the Garden’, small and medium sized plants often establish themselves better than large ones as it is important that the root ball is large enough to support the leaf growth.

HARVESTING

For cooking and salads herbs are best picked fresh as required - also sun dry or cool oven dry and seal in airtight containers. Also try freezing in ice cubes for use in soups and sauces.

Seeds: pick just before fully dry and dry in the sun.

For pot-pourris pick leaves and flowers any time of year.

For adding to oils, pick flowers when in full bloom.

For infusions pick fresh or sun dry in the summer for winter use.

For enriching the soil or accelerating the compost heap we find that comfrey and borage are excellent: cut the leaves several times a year.

If you are allergic to bees be warned that herbs attract them when in flower.

Tabarca to Santa Pola Spain’s best bodies pose down – and no jellyfish!

JOSÉ FRANCISCO ‘Kiko’ Hervás Jodar won the 19th crossing from Tabarca to Santa Pola on Sunday with a time of 1 hour/ 11 minutes/ 46 seconds. Runner up Carlos Vives made the swim in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 50 seconds.

by Jan Gamm An amazing turnout of 1,270 swimmers took to the water at 7.30am in excellent conditions: temperatures of 22º C degrees with 24º water temperature, no wind and thankfully no sign of the swimmers’ nightmare - jellyfish!

WELL ORGANISED The crossing was well organised with a number of support and emergency vessels escorting the swimmers over the 5,900m upstream course.

Kiko Hervás said at the finish line: “This is the first time I have participated in the crossing to Santa Pola. I had heard great things about this event. I managed to maintain a strong pace throughout and achieved my goal. The organisation was great, everything well controlled and also the water was crystal clear; an enjoyable test at amateur level.”

The annual Santa Pola-Tabarca crossing is organised by the Club Natacion Alone.

Organized by the Valencian Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness, the event took place in the Marquee Tent, in the beautiful setting of Marina Salinas in Torrevieja Harbour. The event was the II Trofeo ‘Jaima del Puerto’. After the morning weigh in and registration, the event started at 6.00pm with performances by Madrid’s ‘Al Tran Tran Impro” as well as the Exhibition ‘Airs Remo Concept followed by the competition proper the different weight divisions in both male and female categories.

The various categories included: Men’s physic; Bikini; Fitness; Bodyfitness; Classic bodybuilding and bodybuilding and presented by Hermes García Ribas, Chairman of the Judges FVFF. Among the members of the jury was Antonio Limón González, manager of the Golden Gym Torrevieja, and one of the most infulencial figures in promoting bodybuilding in the region. Torrevieja’s Councillor for Sports Luis María Pizana presented the trophies.

The winners included Miriam Navarro Pérez, Alexis Gonzalez Benitez, Kevin Barba Martínez, Joan García Cuenca, Juan Fcº Sarrión Navarro, Rubén García Guerrero, Juan Romero Burlo, Ceferino Ferrández Cámara who also took the main poser for the championship award with the Absolute female while the absolute Male winner of the II Trofeo Jaima Del Puerto was Alexis González Benítez.

MY WIFE and I recently visited some friends in their new house and were given the obligatory tour. The bathroom was on the top floor and my wife noticed a small door built into the wall.

When she asked what it was, she was told that the bathroom had deliberately been built above the utility room and the door was a chute for dirty laundry so that it went directly down to the washing area. “How fantastic!” she said, “if only we’d thought of that before we built our house”.

The need for an occupation license when buying and selling properties in Spain.

Question: We are selling our Javea apartment, and the buyers with whom we have signed a purchase agreement have requested the occupation license. We do not have it as it is an old property. Do we need to give them one, and if so, how can we get it?.

Dear reader, your inquiry concerns Spanish real estate law and municipal occupation license.

Since the property is in Javea, Alicante, part of the Valencian community, the occupation license is regulated in Law 3/2004, known as LOFCE in the Articles 32 and its following articles.

The occupation license is an administrative act issued by the Town Hall where the property is located, which recognizes the purposes that the building could be used for, or its intended uses. ( In your case, as a home).

In newly built properties, the first occupation license also verifies that the work completed is according to the building license granted.

In existing buildings and old properties, the second occupation license aims to confirm and verify that the property complies with applicable regulations,

regarding the use and building characteristics.

Therefore it is essential when buying or selling, to make sure that the property has this license, and therefore, your buyer can certainly demand it from you.

In addition, utility suppliers water, electricity, etc., could refuse to change the contract, or even supplying the property, if the property does not have an occupation license.

WHEN SHOULD IT BE OBTAINED? Under Article 33 of LOFCE, the first occupation license for new buildings must be obtained when they are completed. It must be renewed after 10 years, if the property is transferred (sale, etc.) or to formalize a new contract for water, gas or electricity.

There is no harm done, but somehow you have got hold of the wrong end of the stick and it’s all a matter of time before things could kick off. Resolve brings strength, and timing is of the essence this week, to boot. With Mars in cahoots with Ceres take stock of the current situation with a view to diffusing any pressure and eliminating the debris.

Venus enjoys a double whammy this week with a warring Mars and a culpable Cancer. You would be wise to spread some positive energy around because it is high time spirits were lifted, and bygones be bygones. There has been some manipulation and this has interfered with a process that was designed to take care of those who currently suffer.

Mercury takes on Cancer and tells others in no uncertain terms that you are not to be messed with. Deliberation by others has brought delay to a project which begs to be completed; and in which many have stuck their necks out to put into practise. Love Me Do Pain has to be felt before somebody makes the decision to close their heart down. As for how much and why, these matters are negotiable with the individual, but just at a time when love needs to flow and healing has to take place, the closing of the heart prevents so much positive life force action in the body. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) NAFLD IS the term for a wide range of conditions caused by a buildup of fat within the liver cells which is NOT caused by alcohol.

A liver that is healthy should contain little or no fat. Most people with NAFLD have small amounts of fat in their liver, often causing no symptoms.

FOUR STAGES OF NAFLD Stage 1: simple fatty liver (steatosis) This early stage of the disease is known as simple fatty liver.

This is one of the most common causes of liver disease affecting 25-30% of people in the UK most of whom are overweight or obese. Usually there are no symptoms and it is often discovered during routine blood tests or routine health screening.

In most cases, it is considered to be harmless. However, steatosis is always taken seriously as in some people the fat can build up, leading to the next stage of NAFLD. Also, if linked to obesity, there will be further health issues to be addressed such as risk of heart attack or stroke.

Stage 2: non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) A small number of people with simple fatty liver will go on to develop stage 2 of NAFLD called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This is a more aggressive form of the condition, when the liver has become inflamed. Inflammation is part of the body’s response to injury, which suggests that cells in the liver are being damaged and that some liver cells are dying. Patients who have NASH may have a dull or aching pain in the top right of their abdomen (over the lower right side of their ribs), or there may be no symptoms at all. It is estimated that around 2-5% of the UK population has NASH.

Stage 3: fibrosis Some people with NASH go on to develop fibrosis, which is where persistent inflammation in the liver results in the formation of fibrous scar tissue around the liver cells and blood vessels. This fibrous tissue replaces some of the healthy liver tissue, but there is still enough healthy tissue for the liver to function normally.

Stage 4: cirrhosis Cirrhosis is the most serious stage of NAFLD. Scar tissue develops and the liver shrinks and becomes lumpy. Cirrhosis is more common after the age of 50yrs being associated with many years of stage 1 of the disease. However in some people it can occur much earlier. Cirrhosis will progress slowly over the years, gradually causing the liver to stop functioning (liver failure). It can also lead to primary liver cancer. Unfortunately, liver damaged caused by cirrhosis is permanent and cannot be reversed.

WHO IS AT RISK? You are more likely to develop NAFLD if you: Are overweight or obese Have type 2 diabetes Have high blood pressure Have high cholesterol Smoke Are over the age of 50

LIVING WITH NAFLD The good news is that for the majority of people with stage 1 NAFLD, the condition does not progress for many years (if at all) and for some it may be possible for the fatty liver to completely resolve with some lifestyle changes: Lose weight and exercise Stop smoking Ensure any conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol are controlled by your GP Either stop or limit alcohol intake – although NAFLD is not caused by alcohol, it may make the condition worse.

Celebrity Clips YOU CAN’T imagine a script for a Bond movie would be unimpressive, but that’s what’s being said. ‘Skyfall’ had similar issues with writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade being replaced by Oscar-nominated writer John Logan. Now the word is the total reverse is happening for Bond 24. The resulting chaos has been tagged with the wonderfully British,’ polite turmoil´ and now the start of the filming has been delayed by 3 months ... TILT! TRACEY EMIN´S ‘My Bed’ was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1999 and was expected to win but it was not to be. However, the notoriety of the work which features an unmade bed surrounded by empty vodka bottles, cigarette butts and condoms continued. Art collector Charles Saatchi paid £150,000 for the piece in 2000, and sold it at Christie’s last week for £2.2m ... Good job he didn’t go to the launderette, eh!

THE SIX members of the group known as Monty Python spawned out of Oxford and Cambridge Universities and the city of New York way back in the mid 1960´s, bringing a brand of comedy to the BBC that broke all the rules and set in motion an innovative style likened to The Beatles’ impact music.

Around 10 months ago I mentioned in Celebrity Clips that the five remaining members were thinking about returning to those heady times and bringing ‘Monty Pythons Flying Circus’ back to life, live on stage, and they’ve only gone and done it!

John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones performed together last week for the first time in decades at London´s O2 arena, ending the show to rapturous applause with a sing-along version of ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’.

The group’s success was global. I recall visiting Salzburg in Austria many moons ago and meeting a local guy who had the full box-set of all the TV shows. They performed classic sketches like the ‘Four Yorkshiremen’ comparing their tough upbringing, and the ‘Lumberjack Song’ with critics like Mark Jeffries from the Daily Mirror saying: “It’s not something completely different but that’s exactly why fans will love it.”

Stephen Fry made a surprise appearance and said: “It felt like being on stage with the Beatles.” The final show on 20th July will be broadcast live to cinemas around the world and TV rights have been sold in more than 100 countries, from Afghanistan to Yemen. Cleese, the oldest of the five at 74, said: “The idea is to do it once really well, in England where it started, and then just leave it at that.” And I´ll be at the front of the queue for the video!

I’M SURE there will be many a TV viewer who will be glad to see the back of the World Cup on Sunday, certainly Eastenders fans will be. When the Belgium v USA quarterfinal game went into extra time the BBC only cancelled the show. Fan Carol Griffin posted: “What?????

No sodding EastEnders until sodding Thursday because of the sodding football???? Sod off sodding BBC…!” That sodding told them!

EMMA WATSON has had an awful time, privately and professionally, since the Harry Potter franchise came to an end, and now finds herself in trouble with government officials.

Emma employed a maid in her New York home, and then thought she would use her in her Islington home as well. This broke the rules of the maid’s visa and Emma now faces a £10,000 fine for her trouble ... always read the small print Sweetpea!

The Force descends on Alicante

By Jan Gamm THE STREETS of Alicante trembled with the thundering boots of 50 members of the 501st Garrison of Imperial Storm Troopers last weekend as they marched through the city to the delight of tourists and residents, part of a full day event from 11am at Santa Bárbara Castle and continuing until late at the Marina.

Onlookers were able to identify a number of favourite characters from George Lucas’ hit Star Wars: Darth Vader, Jango Fett, Tie Pilot, Biker Scout and Baron Fel and others took part in the galaxy exhibition at Alicante Castle, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the 501st Spanish Garrison.

by Anthony Forrest, an original cast member of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Summer swansong

FIVE SENIOR members bid farewell to Footlights Youth Theatre after a barn storming Summer Show to a packed house at Calpe’s Casa de Cultura.

From the poignant start of ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ – a tribute to the fallen of the Great War – to the closing ‘Applause’, director Giovanna Wallis and the cast showed off a rich bank of talent with a sparkling performance of song and dance.

Three numbers from the hit musical and film Chess, ‘All that Jazz’, ‘Good to Mama’ and ‘Razzle Dazzle’, were just one of the

highlights. Rehearsed during a workshop with a West End professional it was a real treat – and showed how the youngsters truly dare to conquer.

Around 500 people applauded each number with applause, cheers and whistles, while the bucket collection raised over 966€ for charity Friends of the Children of EMAUS, more than double the amount donated 12 months ago.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Gerunds imported into Spanish

WELL, I haven’t forgotten your homework, and here are the answers: What are you doing? - ¿Qué estás haciendo?

I am measuring the wall. - Estoy midiendo la pared.

You are telling the truth. - Estás diciendo la verdad.

My husband is washing the dishes. - Mi marido está lavando los platos.

We are spending a lot of money. - Estamos gastando mucho dinero.

My children are cleaning the house. - Mis hijos están limpiando la casa.

I’ve just noticed that almost every one of these sentences expresses something that is highly unlikely to happen in my lifetime. However, as their main purpose is to practice the language and not worry about what they actually say, I will concentrate on the job at hand.

As always with translations there are a few details that could be written differently, for example instead of “los platos” you might have written “la vajilla,” also it depends whether a wall is interior (pared) or exterior (muro) to know exactly which word is appropriate. The main point though is the construction of the verb which hopefully is now clear.

I thought a small digression would be jolly now, as it is still something to do with the connection between English and Spanish languages and cultures. I have mentioned already that the gerund is used in a far greater variety of ways in English than in Spanish, to the point where, for a foreigner our language appears to be full of these –ing words. I suffer from the fact that my surname ends in“–in”. There isn’t a Spaniard in Spain who doesn’t spell my surname “Croning” the first time they come across it!

There is a phenomenon that occurs in languages which is the incorporation of words from other languages. It is because of this, and from the fusions of peoples over the centuries that new languages are born. English is a dominant language in the world for a number of reasons,

and the result is that it is “invading” the Spanish language, particularly in the form of gerunds. Here are some examples of what I mean.

“Body-building”, “camping”, “casting”, “catering”, “doping”, “feeling”, “footing”, “happening”, “lifting”, “mailing”, “marketing”, “overbooking”, “parking”, “peeling”, “piercing”, “rafting”, “shopping”, “surfing”, “traveling”, “windsurfing”, “zapping”.

This is actually a small selection of the gerund “loan words” than now appear frequently in Spanish speech and writing (notice – writing). The curious thing is that quite a few of them slightly modify the original meaning (notice – meaning) of the word, which creates some strange problems when translating (notice – translating).

For example - “camping” means “camp site”; “casting” means “audition”; “footing” means “jogging”; “mailing” mean “mail shot” (or whatever the real word for that is in English), “parking” means “car park”; “peeling” refers only to beauty treatments and never to potatoes; “piercing” refers specifically the adornment of the human anatomy and “traveling” has something to do with camera movements on film sets.

The potential for confusion between English and Spanish speakers with these words is amazing. (Hmm – amazing!)

I shouldn’t really admit to this but a few months ago over the summer I watched the “castings” for “Factor X” on the television; that was in between sending out “mailings” from my website. One day someone offered me a “peeling” but I thought that was a bit decadent, especially as I would not allow my daughter to have a “piercing”. I keep thinking that I should go back to “footing” but I’m too lazy, driving to a “parking” is more my scene these days, whilst on the home front, I’m more like to spend my time “zapping” than organizing a “happening”.

Now you’ve got something else to fill your time – gerund hunting!

THIS WEEKS TechBubble will introduce an old concept that is currently revolutionizing the way we will live, yet so many people do not know it even exists! The Internet of Things, also known as IoT, is a network of “Smart” devices known as “Objects” or “Things”. These devices can communicate with each other through wireless and the internet with or without human interaction to provide services or carry out tasks at home, in the car, even your body!

If like me you grew up between 1962 and 1988 you should remember a TV show called “The Jetsons”, a cartoon based on a futuristic family where they had robotics and appliances to carry out their daily chores. Take away the flying cars, that is the best way to describe the IoT. In 2006 there was around 2 billion Things throughout the world, by 2015 an expected 15 billion, and by 2020 an enormous 200 billion connected devices automating the world.

The majority of Things are in businesses, factories and health care, but we have witnessed these devices becoming part of everyday life with smart phones and smart Tvs. During the current tech bubble, engineers and developers have taken this technology even further with wearables such as smart watches / glasses, blood pressure monitors, environment controllers, glucose monitors, home appliances and cars!

A perfect example of a “Thing” is Google Glass, a product that is launching in the States for $1500. Google Glass is what’s known as “Wearables” and comes in the form of a pair of glasses with an interactive lens that provides computing in front of your eyes on special glass powered by the Android mobile operating system. In the short time Google Glass has been available it has already made headlines with stories such as surgeons in the UK successfully operating with the assistance of Google Glass!

In the following weeks we will dedicate an editorial to Google Glass and delve more into its functionality and progress.

It would be an impossible task to summarize IoT in one editorial, but I hope I touched upon enough to give you a basic understanding of what it is and how quickly it will expand and affect your lives. Next weeks editorial will focus on Internet Security and the importance of staying safe on the existing internet and looking at current battles tech giants are having with the government to keep us safe.

Enabling updates on Windows XP from another version of Windows DEAR AUNTY: I came across an article on Yahoo about how to enable Windows Updates on XP from another version of Windows. I followed the instructions to create a text document, but when I double clicked and got a message ‘do I want to save as a registry document’, I clicked “yes” all, but then I get a message saying “Cannot import, C:/Document and Settings\ name \My Document\ xp.reg. The specified file is not a registry script.” Could you please tell me how to get this file or how to create this as a binary script file into the registry? Eric.

Aunty says: The version of the code in your document, differs to the code I have seen for this “hack” to be used. Your code is: [HKEY LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMWPAPosReady]. The Code I have seen is: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/WPA/PosReady] - which is probably why your PC is not adding it to the registry, as your code is not able to be located in the registry.

But as usual all caveats apply and editing the registry is not recommended unless you know what you are doing and have a full backup of your data. Microsoft advises against this “hack.”

Web Page Can I transfer spreadsheet printing data between two error different Office Suites?

DEAR AUNTY: My cannon printer works fine for in house files and photos, but when I try to print a web page, I get a banner saying: “an error occurred while printing.”

IF YOU look at the game of golf over any time period then you are bound to notice changes.

by Tony Myles TURN THE clock back one hundred years or so and you will see players wearing regular everyday wear, playing with wooden shafted clubs and hitting balls made of hand stitched leather stuffed with feathers. Sturdy shoes were the order of the day. Ladies rarely played.

Fifty years ago the styles had started to become outlandish and simple tweeds had given way to colourful checks and large flat caps. Spiked shoes were available and ladies played ‘occasionally’ but were never allowed in certain rooms of the clubhouse.

There is an apocryphal story from those days about the lady members who complained about the fact that when they were sitting chatting on the veranda they could hear the rude language of the men in the bar. The club took their complaint seriously and banned ladies from the veranda.

Of course that just wouldn’t happen today when ladies and gents compete on equal terms everywhere. Well, not quite everywhere, as according to a recent visitor from Scotland there are still a number of clubs where the member’s bar is men-only and ladies have their own area elsewhere.

Yet despite these idiosyncrasies the opportunity for ladies to play golf has existed for several decades and so the question is Where are the ladies?

What is the ratio of men to woman golfers? The short answer is that no one appears to be able to provide a definitive response and percentages vary from single figures upwards. However the general feeling is that it is close to 80/20. If that is true, why is it I never see more than a handful of ladies playing golf?

If you look at any golf course on any day and you will find that the fairways are cluttered with men. Yes, ladies do have a stronger presence but it appears to be on days when they arrange to play with their friends and even today many UK clubs still have a ‘Ladies Day’.

Do ladies prefer to play together as a group? Why is that?

Golf is not a sport that demands great physical strength and this was never better demonstrated than on the many occasions when The Euro Nations Cup was held at The La Sella Golf Resort. I witnessed firsthand a number of young girls who would be blown over in a strong breeze, hitting the ball

further than many of my overweight mates would ever dream they could achieve.

Feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross FIRST IMPRESSIONS matter. In business it is that care and attention to appearance, dress and general conduct that makes a lasting impression.

The same can be applied to vehicles and that’s where Suzuki scores highly. From that first moment of opening the door and sitting in the driver’s seat I feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross. Bear in mind that I drive a lot of cars and yet Suzukis always stands out because they are all comfortable.

I test the Suzuki during the worst weather for 100 years. At one point over 100,000 homes are without power and some unfortunate residents in Somerset have been without power since Christmas. Flooding is encountered on almost every route but my Japanese friend with its raised ride height is ideal in such situations.

High winds and water logged roads ensure that it is nigh on impossible to exceed 60mph. Those gusting high winds do buffet the Suzuki but it feels confident enough. It is quite sluggish though especially on start-up and so it is pleasing to find that it is equipped with a sport mode that livens things up. In fact it remains on this mode for most of the test because I find it gives it the ‘oomph’ that I require. Interestingly it doesn’t affect fuel economy that much either with the vehicle still returning over 40mpg, which I’m quite impressed with considering it’s a 1.6litre petrol.

When conditions become too slippery it is easy to turn the centre mounted dial to ‘snow

and mud’ mode, which is also extremely useful during the test. Some of the routes that I am most familiar with have been closed due to the floods and workmen try hard to remedy the situation.

All this talk of climate change being the problem Queen Victoria reported similar circumstances in her diary many years ago. Whatever the reason, you’re grateful to be driving the SX4 S-Cross. The raised ride height, the permanent 4WD and the powerful windscreen wipers and washers make driving in these challenging conditions enjoyable rather than a chore.

My two girls in the back quickly fall asleep and my wife Caroline finds her heated front seat comfortable.

“I like the lemon fragrance to the windscreen wash,” she says, adding that sometimes it can be very overpowering

requiring the windows to be wound down.

The large glass panoramic roof makes the cabin feel light and airy and on just one of the days of the test the sun actually appears bringing the glass roof really into its own. I like the fact that the front part also has a tilting sunroof function.
