Gone phishing BANKING GIANT HSBC broke its own “golden rule” regarding online security when it sent an electronic mail-shot to customers regarding improved statements. by Jack Troughton & Benny Davis Pedal power in Calpe
On yer bike! By Jack Troughton SCORES OF cyclists enjoyed a bit of pedal power in Calpe on Sunday with a Cycle Rally to mark European Mobility Week and the International Day without Cars. Organised by Councillor Carole Saunders and the Agenda 21 team, 170 people of all ages took part and were able to view plans of the new bicycle route for the town.
TWO COMPUTER mouse ‘clicks’ from the message and clients were asked to enter personal security details – something the bank always maintains it will never do so people could be sure they are not being targetted by fraudsters. Unfortunately such an email – despite its impressive design – causes confusion as to whether it is a genuine message from the bank or an attempt to obtain confidential information by criminals by a process known as ‘phishing’. The seemingly harmless email which encourages customers to use online rather than paper statements evens repeats the HSBC mantra: “Your security is our priority”.
And it reads: “In our emails, HSBC will never ask you for confidential information or to confirm your security details. Links within our emails will only take you to information pages.” The bank even advises that any email received that asked for confidential details was likely to be a phishing exercise – and to report it. On Wednesday morning personal finance expert Sarah Willington told Sky News that the biggest defence bank customers have against phishing was: “No bank would ever ask customers to divulge personal banking details through direct email, or links.” Continued on page 5

Regeneration required
TOWN HALLS are demanding extra government money to regenerate the 450 hectares of the Montgo Natural Park destroyed in the disastrous blaze two weeks ago. by Jack Troughton Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi described the fire “a monumental disaster” while Ana Kringe, mayor of Denia, declared the affected land “a disaster area”. Both local authorities are asking for cash from Valencia, Alicante and Madrid to help with reforestation of the area of natural beauty affected by the fire. The fire began on the afternoon of 11th September and 400 firemen, military personnel, police and volunteers – backed with a fleet of fire-fighting aircraft – were involved in bringing the flames under control. The fire emergency was officially declared over the following Tuesday. The fire burned 150 hectares in the municipality of Denia, the remainder in Javea, and full reports have been prepared for the authorities. Ms Kringe is holding talks with the Valencia Government and the Department of the environment to insure they have a full understanding of the size of the regeneration needed.
PICTURE She said: “The Montgo Natural Park is one of the most visited parks in Valencia and should present a perfect picture. We all have to work to insure this will not happen again.” Javea town Hall is already preparing a The special budget for regeneration – backed Montgo by the private sector. 67,000 phoney magazines cover up 15€ million fraud by Keith Nicol SPANISH POLICE have busted an ‘ad-space scam’ that tricked thousands of small businesses into advertising in phoney magazines over the last 13 years. A group of con artists printed 67,000 phoney magazines over 13 years using an old press at an industrial warehouse in Elche - part of an ad-space scam that tricked thousands of unsuspecting businesses. The magazines were purportedly published by police associations, the army, and non-profit groups working with the disabled, each publication said to have between 30 and 40 ad spaces each costing between 150€ and 400€. However, the magazines had no distribution other than to the clients who took out ads! EXPERT MOTIVATOR The alleged ring leader, a Valencian businessman, is described by police as an ‘expert motivator’ who implied that advertising in a Police publication could gain advantages should the clients ever find themselves in trouble - a classic scam popular in the USA more than thirty years ago. Between 2001 and 2014, the ring extracted around 15€ million from more than 150,000 self-employed workers and small businesses across Spain. Content was plagiarized from official sources and by interviewing real police officers who were also convinced the magazines were real. The publications were full of National Police and Guardia Civil logos and badges and used the names of the Guardia Civil Radio Amateur Association (ACRAG) and the National Police’s Santo Ángel Radio Amateur Association (ARSA), which do exist but have no connection to the scam.
A printing press found inside a warehouse in Elche, Alicante province
52 ARRESTS The National Police raid yielded 52 arrests (49 of them in Elche), 46,000€ in cash, four vehicles and computer files. One server was found behind a double ceiling inside an office. Investigators blocked 32 bank accounts and identified several front men, many of them elderly people in financial difficulties who were unaware of what they were signing. The alleged ringleader, Valencia businessman Antonio Pascual Fernández Muñoz, is now under investigation for fraud, criminal association and money laundering. Investigators said Fernández Muñoz also controlled several real estate firms and a telephone marketing company to help cover up the fraud. The ill-gained money was transferred between his businesses using fake invoices and used to pay bonuses
to phone operators who sold ad space for him. Muñoz organised parties and also cash incentives for employees with the most sales. More than 100 telephone lines were at their service and targets included small businesses from all sectors sourced from the phone book and local brochures. What the police failed to find during the raid was a single contract. Salespeople instead offered their clients ‘collaborations’ with police magazines. Complaints were filed as early as 2006, and in March 2010 Valencia public television aired a programme showing a hidden camera exposing the way the ring worked. In 2012, the investigation began moving faster and the ring was finally busted in June of this year, ending its plans to expand into Central America. A judge lifted a gag order on the proceedings this week.
Benidorm Mayor to stand in 2015 election
By Irena Bodnarec LAST MONDAY, the Mayor of Benidorm – Agustin Navarro officially announced his intention to stand as the PSPV-PSOE candidate for Mayor in next year’s municipal elections. He has until 6th October to rally the support of his party to endorse his application as the official party candidate. In his speech, which was made outside the Town Hall to an assembled press pack and party supporters, he stated that the last few years have been difficult economically for the town. However, as Mayor he has managed to reduce the inherited 140 million euro debt from the PP by a staggering 30% during his leadership. He wants to continue the work he has begun for a further 4 years, leading Benidorm onto better and greater things as well as fulfilling and completing projects which have already been started. The last general election in Spain took place on Sunday 20th November 2011 and the 2015 election must be held on or before 20th December. British expats registered on the Town Hall pardon can vote in the local municipal elections for Mayor but cannot vote in the General Election to decide on the Prime Minister – only Spanish National can.

Continued from front page Retired journalist Benny Davis believes the HSBC email campaign will have caused widespread confusion and breached the bank’s own email security policy. “We have absolutely no idea of how many customers actually rang HSBC to ask if the email was genuine – it breaches its own national anthem on security,” he said. CONCERN Benny was so concerned as a client of the bank he immediately contacted the bank and received a standard reply about phishing and online security. He then received a call from a man claiming to be a bank security officer – telephoning from Malta, who before being able to deal with the complaint wanted to ask some security questions. Benny added: “I said could I ask some security questions – I asked how I knew that this was not part of some elaborate phishing scam.” In a statement from HSBC, the bank said: “Although the email did not lead directly to a site asking for you log-in details, it did only take a couple of clicks to get to that page. I appreciate that this caused concern; however, we did review it with our security team before the emails were sent as everyone
5
knew that a direct link to the Personal Internet Banking page was not acceptable. “The email was sent with the best of motives – to make it easy for our customers – and has generally been well received...and though strictly speaking we are in line with our security guidelines, we are clearly not in the spirit of them. We are now reviewing how we will send future email notifications to insure we prevent any confusion or concern.” But Benny said the bank had opened a door to clients opening every email without questioning whether it was genuine or not. “We need to warn people to be very careful if they receive anything like this because it could open the floodgates to fraudsters,” he said. “The bank now says it will review its email policy – they admit they do ask people for personal banking details. They have changed their own security boundaries. “No-one at the call centres knew the bank was sending out this email – they don’t even know what’s happening on their own cyberdoorstep!”
Benidorm bikes under scrutiny
BENIDORM’S BICYCLE hire service is under scrutiny as dozens of bicycles have been found unfit for service with broken or taped-up saddles; loose pedals; bent handlebars; inadequate brakes; rust and flat tyres. Councillor Conrado Hernández has announced that an ‘ultimatum’ has been issued to the concession holder, Impursa, operating around 20 bike stations throughout the city. And more than half of the bicycles have been retired from service, leaving an inadequate stock to meet demand.

Minister resigns as Abortion Bill shelved by Jack Troughton JUSTICE MINISTER Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon resigned hours after his highly controversial abortion reforms were shelved by the Partido Popular government. Critics said the ultra-conservative law would take Spain back 30 years in terms of abortion legislation – and it triggered emotional demonstrations from both sides of the debate, women claiming the right to choose and pro-life groups. And with a general election scheduled for next May, it was feared the legislation would cost the PP valuable votes at the ballot box. The legislation was very much 55-year-old Ruiz-Gallardon’s pet project. He drafted the planned law and it was approved by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Cabinet in December last year. However, since last winter it has remained in limbo, universally rejected by opposition parties and sections of the PP itself. The draft law totally removed the right to abortion on demand until the 14th week of pregnancy and returned to a system where a termination would only be given in cases of rape, serious fetal deformities, or when a mother’s life was in danger. BACKTRACK And perhaps the most controversial issue centred on the
Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon
Minister’s plan to do away with fetal deformity as automatically valid reason for a termination. He later backtracked. Mr Rajoy confirmed on Tuesday the government’s abortion legislation was being shelved saying it did not have sufficient consensus to move ahead. Instead, current 2010 laws would be reformed under the ‘Family Protection Plan’. This will insure that 16 and 17-year-olds will need the consent of their families before they can go ahead with a termination. The reforms are likely to be announced before the end of 2014. The minister, who said he was “convinced” the bill would go ahead in July, has not only given up his ministerial post but also his seat in congress and all PP positions. He said he believed he had carried out his mission to the full and added: “I am convinced that the debate that has opened up here on such a sensitive issue is a positive thing for Spain, despite the personal costs to me.”

Spanish real estate stabilises at last A REPORT from Tecnocasa and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra indicates that the price of housing in Spain has finally stabilised. Prices in the first half fell just 0.04% compared to recent years and the average mortgage is 8% lower than a year ago. It appears that Spanish real estate is at last emerging from the crisis and pundits believe property prices will not go any lower. Universitat Pompeu Fabra’s Professor José GarcíaMontalvo reports that recent performance figures in the market are crucial in the financial sector. The lion’s share of purchases has been with cash buyers but it may be expected that lines of credit will begin to open.

Bathroom scandal
JUST WHEN you think it’s safe to use the bathroom… A 49-year-old restaurant manager in Elche has been arrested for filming his female employees as they used the bathroom on the premises. The cook discovered a mobile phone concealed within a wall-mounted air freshener and alerted the police. According to the cook, she tried to depress the button on the air freshener but it jammed against the hidden camera/phone. Allegedly no compromising images have been discovered: the court is considering whether to make a charge against an invasion of privacy.

A second Ebola victim flown home to Spain
Esperanza Aguirre in court EX-PRESIDENT of the Madrid Regional Government and PP representative Esperanza Aguirre has been in court this week at the Plaza de Castilla answering various charges after she was caught parking illegally in Madrid’s Gran Via in April. She had parked her vehicle illegally on a bus lane in order to access an ATM machine nearby. The prosecution alleges that she refused to accept the fine from a police officer and also knocked a Guardia Civil officer off his bike in the process. It is also alleged that a car chase followed through the city that ended at Aguirre’s house.
Woman admits false rape allegations A second Ebola patient is brought home to Spain
by Jan Gamm A SECOND Ebola patient, Manuel Garcia Viejo, has been flown home to Spain for treatment this week, arriving in Madrid’s Torrejon de Ardoz Air Base aboard a specially adapted military aircraft. Manuel Garcia Vie-
jo is a Spanish missionary and medical director of the Hospital Order of San Juan de Dios in Lunsar, Sierra Leone. Father Miguel Pajares, also a member of San Juan de Dios, died last month days after being brought back to Spain for treatment from Liberia. Most of Sierra Leone’s 6m
inhabitants were confined to their homes for 72 hours from Friday while 30,000 volunteers went from door to door educating residents on how to prevent the spread of contagion, following concerns that families were burying victims at night to conceal deaths from the disease.
A YOUNG woman aged 20 has been ordered by the court to pay a fine of 2,160€ at 6€ per day for a year after she confessed to inventing rape allegations against a group of men at an annual fairground event in Malaga. Furthermore, the lawyer representing the men, two of whom are just 17 years old, has said that action will be brought against the woman for making such allegations after she admitted the act was consensual. The Spanish government’s antirape guidelines have been under fire from various women’s groups for being at best complacent and at worse farcical as precautions against attack advise: ‘drawing your curtains’ and ‘not getting into a lift with strangers’.

New 10 euro notes
The new 10 euro bank note went into circulation on Tuesday
by Irena Bodnarec THE NEW 10 euro bank note went into circulation on Tuesday, with improved security features intended to make it more difficult to counterfeit. The new note is a deep red colour and has raised edges similar to the new 5 euro note, which was introduced in May of last year. It also includes a portrait of a character from Greek mythology in the hologram and watermark and the number will change colour from an emerald green to dark blue when tilted. It is estimated that 334 million people in 18 countries across Europe now use the Euro currency, opening it up to forgery, hence the improved security
features. A new 20 euro note is also set to follow next year – 2015. The new 5 and 10 euro notes will continue to circulate alongside the existing one and no date has yet been given for the expiry – so don´t worry if you keep them from your previous holiday! As you pay for items you may receive a mixture of new and old notes. When the new 5 euro note was introduced last year not all automatic machines had been programmed to accept them – but hopefully that has been rectified for the newest addition to the family! The European Central Bank (ECB) have produced a video “Discover the new 10 euro note” in 23 different languages showing and explaining the new features.

Difficult to deal with WHY IS Telefonica so difficult to deal with? I have bought a house in Campoverde that is 10 years old, but has never been lived in before. The house is wired for a phone line out to the Telefonica box on the pavement outside my house. The Telefonica engineer said he could not connect us because when the street was built Telefonica failed to wire it up properly. The junction box for the whole street is 10 meters across the road, and the connection to my house should come via my neighbour’s box in the pavement 15 meters away. Every time I phone 1004 the engineering department they tell me it is impossible to connect me. If Telefonica cannot connect me to a phone line then who can? All the rest of the urbanisation is connected. When they have failed to do their job properly in the first place how does one get them to be more customer-friendly? Any advice would be appreciated. David Fentum
System All you have frustration
to do is try
I AGREE with Anthony Evans regarding learning Spanish. I too have been using Duolingo and have found it a marvellous app which has taught me far more - and quicker - than any amount of classroom tuition. I have completed all the lessons and am currently going back over them on a revision exercise. He is also right about Guardamar. I had reason recently to visit the Iberdrola office and had to ask an elderly Spanish gentleman for directions. As he wasn’t quite sure another Spanish couple joined in and gave me a detailed explanation of how to get there - and thanks to Duolingo I actually understood and found the office immediately. Once there I again communicated what I wanted in Spanish, this time with apologies for any mistakes I might be making. The man behind the counter was delighted, said my Spanish was excellent and far better than his English. I left feeling quite bucked up! It just goes to show that all you have to do is TRY. And thanks to Duolingo, it works! Janet Kilbourne, Rojales
I READ Mr Cooper’s letter published in your paper with interest. I can clearly understand his frustration with the Spanish system which most people complain about. After reading the letter several times I was left wondering why Mr Cooper needed to update his English address as he states he is a Spanish resident. Surely this would only add confusion. It would also be interesting to know if Mr Cooper communicated in Spanish or English, as again if English was used this would have caused confusion. Whilst your paper does highlight issues of which expats need be aware, I get annoyed to see you printing letters from people who have caused themselves problems. Like most English people I have not managed to learn Spanish but if I needed to fill in forms I would use a lawyer to do the job properly and not complain that Spanish departments do not speak English. Dennis Lindars, Torrevieja
Beware
BEWARE THE so-called Iberdrola representative offering 10% discount. These agents are from Iberdrola Generación SA and not Iberdrola Comercialización de Último Recurso, SAU but use similar looking logos and contracts. In fact their 10% offer is no such thing. They give you a discount on the fixed amount but raise the KW of energy consumed. The discount is also for 12 months. They refuse to show you any figures or tariffs or leave a copy of the contract with you to examine so tell them to go away. They also demand monthly direct debit payments. FACUA has already denounced these misleading practices but as usual they continue. M Mansfield

Coming clean on your laundry by Jan Gamm THE QUESTION of drying one’s smalls is a big debate on the Costa Blanca and getting it wrong can cost a pretty penny. For those who live in villas it is simple – just erect a washing line. For apartment dwellers, however, it is not so straight forward. First you have to establish that the city ordinance allows laundry to be
dried outside, then the residents’ association has to be consulted as to where and how your washing must be hung – and installing an illegal washing line may result in a fine of between 60€ and 750€! Many dry their laundry on balconies but most community bylaws do not allow clotheslines to be placed on balconies or out of windows overlooking the street as they could fall on passers-by.
Another fairground tragedy A 12-YEAR-OLD little girl has died in Maribañez Fairgrounds in Los Palacios, Villafranca, Seville, after suffering an electric shock from one of the attractions. Another child who had been on the ride is under observation in a Seville hospital. Police have been interviewing the operators of the ride known as ‘La Olla’ which consist of a large round container that tilts and spins. The city of Los Palacios has declared two days of mourning and closed down the fair pending police investigations.
No more flashy wheels for Spain’s police force
HIGH END cars seized by the Spanish Police through drug busts and other operations will no longer be utilised for service by the police force. Last year, the Ministry of the Interior saved taxpayers a huge amount of cash by putting four armoured vehicles to work transporting dignitaries and visiting VIPs. However, the Chief of Police has decided to ban officers from using other vehicles confiscated from villains in an effort to reduce the considerable expense of maintaining luxury cars.

A lesson in design YOUNGSTERS STUDYING at the Lady Elizabeth Junior School enjoyed a lesson in interior design when they helped give the school foyer a facelift. by Jack Troughton Parents Amanda Johnston – a professional designer – and Ella Chard took charge of the project at the school on Cumbre del Sol, Benitachell, giving the entrance a bright and welcoming feel. Headmaster Richard Wijeratne said Amanda had gathered support for the project from local businesses and individuals. “She took the initiative to brighten up the whole of the foyer – inside and outside – to make it more welcoming to the school,” he said.
“The parents love it and the children love it.” Comfortable sofas and mosaic tables, together with plants, have been strategically placed in the entrance area, while clocks show time zones around the globe. Mr Wijeratne added: “They are fun and very fitting as we are very much an international school.” He said the project was to be continued as other businesses had offered to contribute to the initiative. There are currently 540 students at the school and some of the pupils described the new look as “comfortable”, “colourful”, and “cool”.

Neurologist Dr Karim Ben Ghezala is a spine specialist and admits that acute back pain will affect 70% of the population at some time in their lives – normally dealt with ‘conservatively’ by pain relief and physiotherapy. “It’s a bit like having to go to the dentist”. However, should the situation last more than three months and be upgraded to chronic lumber pain, the situation needs a complete diagnosis. The doctor said: “We find out step by step about the cause.” The neurologist said doctors split patients into two groups – younger and older. When speaking about the spine, older patients are over 60-years-old.
SLIPPED DISC “In most cases young patients have suffered a slipped disc – if this happens we have to evaluate whether the problem is big or small. If it’s small, we continue with conservative treatment but if there is a neurological problem we must decide what technique is best,” said Dr Ben Ghezala, who qualified in German and became a spinal specialist before moving to Spain. “Today the gold standard is micro-surgery or endoscopic surgery. Both are offered here at Hospital Clinica Benidorm.” He added: “In a young patient, depending on the technique used, we have a very quick recuperation. Some are afraid they cannot return to play sport and normal activity – usually they return to a completely normal life.” Older patients can also suffer a slipped disc but are also more likely to suffer instability, more degeneration of the spine, muscle wastage and spinal canal stenosis. Micro-surgery is still possible but the medical team will also consider surgery to fix a
Dr Karim Ben Ghezala
joint with screws and sometimes a protective cage – it depends on the individual. Older patients also lose the ability to walk long distances and lose power. QUALITY “Nowadays we have changes in people’s quality of life – people in their seventies play tennis and golf – and they come to us looking for solutions. There are solutions, for sure – easy solutions that give them back this
quality of life,” said Dr Ben Ghezala. He said there were many improvements in the techniques available. “50 years ago there was just a hammer and a nail – now we have 2,000 hammers. “We have a lot more techniques in the medical industry and more techniques in the evolution of spinal surgeons.” For more information about Hospital Clinica Benidorm call 96 585 3850 or visit www.clinicabenidorm.com

by Jack Troughton GENEROUS GOLFERS of the Marina Alta Golf Society donated 3,000€ to two Costa Blanca charities – the MABS Cancer Support Group and EMAUS each receiving 1,500€. The society has 62 members and 24 regular players yet has managed to donate more than 20,000€ to good causes in seven years. Making the donation at Satari’s Restaurant in Moraira, Captain Denis McVeigh said: “This is the seventh year we have do-
nated to charity and in those seven years we have donated in excess of 20,000€. “What we are doing this year is giving a total of 3,000€ to be split equally between MABS and EMAUS.” And he said: “In these difficult times of austerity, where money remains extremely tight, I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our members and raising this sort of money in such a short time.” Denis said the money for EMAUS had come “out of the blue” but just at the right time because a boiler had broken down in one of the children’s homes.
The Marina Alta Golf Society welcomes new members – anyone interested in joining can call Secretary David Kitson on 96 649 7862. The society plays in Benidorm on Mondays, while some members play on Wednesdays and Fridays. The members also meet on Saturdays in Calpe at 1pm for a social gathering. Pictured with the 1,500€ cheque for MABS are (from left) Dave Reid, Margaret Stevens, Colin Murphy, Denis McVeigh MABS President Jacqui Phillips MBE, and golf society Treasurer Phil Gardner.
Classes designed for members include Pilates, yoga, and circuit training, but other classes, the gym and pool are also on offer. Further details can be found on the Denia U3A website www.u3Adeniamemberlodge.org or contact fitness@u3adenia.org

Update on ex-pat services by
Jennifer Cunningham
MANY YEARS ago, I decided to offer assistance to Ex Pats recently arrived in Spain and also for people who found living in a country with another language, culture and rules confusing. OVER THE years this side of the business has become far more active and professional. The company has an English-speaking solicitor operating from the Los Dolses office, a very knowledgeable and charming lady. I also have access to many other lawyers along the coast. Remember it is best to have both Spanish will and a UK will, otherwise your estate will be held up on probate for a longer time than necessary. I have for some time worked alongside a financial company which is heavily regulated and fully legal to operate in Spain, and therefore able to offer sound advice on many aspects of your wealth. It is very important to plan for the future and to know what will happen to your investments on your demise. They also offer a full advisory service on Private Pensions, which is an area for discussion before the due date of release of your funds. The rules change regularly, and it is to your advantage to understand how best to protect your hard earned money, with maximum tax efficiency. A consultation with an advisor is free in the first instance. Sometimes it can be beneficial just to talk to an advisor and ask them to prepare a report on your investments to see if they can be improved on. Inheritance Tax is a particularly difficult minefield to negotiate, even for Spanish Accountants. Please just don’t leave everything to chance, in the hope that it will all work out. Protecting your family is always of highest importance and this statement leads me into another
area that you might like to look at more closely and which could be financially to your advantage: the dreaded funeral plans. Many of you have already taken an hour out of your life to sit down with a consultant from one of my offices and discuss why taking out a plan is so beneficial for all the family. The stress of losing a loved one is well, there are no words to describe it - the person left is not in a good place mentally to be able to make decisions, and especially trying to find in excess of 4,000â‚Ź within 24/48 hours to pay for the funeral. Many people have their family living abroad, and as happened recently, once advised by the neighbor of the death of the parent, the family arrived and all they had to do was go to the Crematorium and arrange the service that they required. So you can see in a moment of extreme sadness it takes most of the pressure off, especially if it should be a person living here on their own. Therefore, why not be prepared - be kind to your partner and your family and purchase a Funeral Plan, which not only takes away the financial worry but also all the organization. Everything is arranged for you, including the necessary registration and certificates. It makes sense to make only one phone call instead of many. You will see in my adverts that there is a very special offer for Funeral Plans, available for a limited amount of time. Please see one of my consultants who will spend the time explaining how it will all work, and you will be pleasantly surprised. And I can promise
you that once you have signed the contract, you will feel a sensation of relief knowing you can forget the whole matter again. I would like to share with you some more exciting news: an SL Company has been formed in Javea offering a rental service - Jennifer Cunningham Estates. If you are looking for a property to rent on a long term basis in the Javea or surrounding localities, or have a property you wish to rent out, please call Richard or Sharyn on 96 579 6038: info@jennifercunninghamestates.com or visit: www.jennifercunninghamestates.com The final part is Life Insurance: Liberty have a plan that is excellent which can often work out at 50% more economical than other quotes. No, this does not mean any reduction in cover, in fact you could find your family have better and fuller protection. Many other companies do not request a medical declaration or questionnaire. This is quite unsatisfactory, as depending on the cause of death, there could be possible problems when paying out the policy. Once again we are always here to help you with honest, straight forward advice PS: If you are feeling uncomfortable about your Health Insurance cover or are not entirely sure of what your policy actually covers, or you have nobody to advise and assist you and would like to change companies, please contact Mandy in the Javea Office on 96 646 1690, and if you would like a car or house quote contact any of my consultants in your local office.

Smoky’s paw story by Keith Nicol ANYONE WITH a cat will tell you their cat is unique but Smoky really is one of those who is unique. As far as APAH Animal Rescue Charity is aware, there isn’t another cat like him on the Costa Blanca. Smoky was rescued by someone who found him on a rubbish tip on the coast. His long hair was matted and full of fleas; not unusual, but what amazed his rescuer was the fact that his back feet are the wrong way round. When the call came through to APAH, they couldn’t believe it either. His cat loving rescuer had organised the treatment of his fleas, and his castration but due to owning cats of his own, couldn’t offer Smoky the home environment that he needs. Smoky is around one year old and vets have con-
firmed that his feet would have been turned around since birth. He is able to walk around, but cannot jump. He is a wonderfully affectionate cat, with loads of love to give. He could not possibly have been out on the streets for long as there are no calluses on his legs; caused through prolonged walking on hard ground and he would have lost his fight for food and water very quickly. When he was born, someone took the decision to let a tiny disabled kitten live and due to his affectionate nature, cared for him until very recently. The question Smoky, looking that staff at APAH are asking is “has that person lost for his him and is looking for him, or after a year of keeping loving him safe, have they abandoned him?” owner Smoky is currently being cared for in a foster home or a new home but he needs a safe and loving environment, where he will bring a lot of joy to his new owner. It would be better for him to be an indoor cat or to have access to the outdoors which is safe and contained. If Smoky is your cat and you have been searching for him or if you believe you are the one who could give with wonderful and loving cat a safe home, please call APAH on 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

Trees for patio style gardens
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
MANY EXPATS have small front gardens, small inner patios and small back yards, especially in terraced housing in villages. ALL CAN be treated as patio gardens with a centre of a side tree or two, provided the factors listed below are taken into account. The possible trees mentioned are selected from those described in the flowering fruiting and evergreen tree sections of Part Four of our book ‘Your Garden in Spain – From Planning Planting and Maintenance’. For instance one needs to consider the following issues: Is the tree for shade or colour or both? Do you want all year round shade or just in the summer? In return for a great show of spectacular flowers are you willing to cope with a major fall of dead flowers and leaves or would only a clean tree be acceptable? A Judas tree looks great when in flower around Easter and when in leaf during the summer but then has a heavy autumn leaf fall and hundreds of seed pods that need to be swept. Do you want to see through the tree to the outer beds of the patio as you wander round the central bed? One tree that meets this need perfectly is a Caesalpinia Gilliesii or ‘Bird of Paradise’ tree, which has wonderful large flowers for months and does not grow too tall or dense. The feathery leaves give a Chinese look, especially on a wellpruned open tree. A frangipani could also be planted in sheltered places. Do you want an instant tree or are you willing
to be patient? Naturally small trees are less expensive than mature trees that need to come on a lorry and be lifted into position with a crane. Do you want a tree that integrates into the total patio garden or do you want a tall, wide tree that dominates the patio and will eventually be a feature seen from other gardens or the street? If so trees such as the evergreen Norfolk Island pine, Orchid Bauhina and Chorisia could be considered. Would you like a fruit tree? If so a specimen citrus tree such as a perpetual flowering and fruiting Lunar Lemon, a Persimmon that has late colourful fruit and interesting leaves, a Pomegranate tree with its elegant waxy flowers and colourful fruit or a large spreading Fig tree are possibilities. Do you want a tree that is likely to be long lived? If so avoid palms due to the dreaded palm weevil -and some species of yellow flowered acacias only last for about a dozen years. Do you want to preserve something of Spain’s disappearing heritage? If so a several-hundred-year-old or, if you have the cash, a thousand year old olive tree could fit the bill. A cork oak with part of its cork bark cut off to expose the bright orange inner trunk can also look attractive. For those that want a clean garden, recognise that both these trees have leaf
and fruit falls although essentially evergreen. Do you want a tree that provides dappled shade so that other plants can be planted in the shade below the canopy either in the ground or in pots? If so consider a Jacaranda, False Acacia or fir tree but keep them down to a sensible size. ‘Gardening in Spain’ and our other books: available from Amazon Books

New opportunity for Winning Express members Now, thanks to their links with Acquiro International Trading Ltd, the company that purchased the firm in the spring of 2012, a whole new avenue of opportunity has opened up, and again it is a facility exclusive to Winning Express members. Prior to purchase Acquiro had built a reputation in the bloodstock and breeding industry and it remains their core business. Managing Director Nicholas Thom explains: “It is the end-user, the person or company that purchases a yearling that ultimately takes the risk. Racing aficionados will be aware that the most expensive yearling ever purchased was too slow to even make the racecourse and then proved infertile at stud! However, the agencies involved will all have been paid significant commissions on the various deals.” A bloodstock agent can enjoy various streams of income; a straightforward purchase and sale with a pre-determined
has proven extremely profitable for “us”Itsays Thom, “and now we are setting

Naturally we will impose limits initially so that as many members as possible can participate. Tax will be paid by the company at source and the contributors will receive a dividend of 2.5% monthly” The scheme will come into effect on 1st October. On the previous Sunday, 28th September, Winning Express are sponsoring the Help for Heroes Concert at Benidorm Palace. Sterling v Euro: what next?
by
Keith Littlewood International Financial Adviser
ONE OF the most critical factors for ex-pats is how the GB Pound fares against the Euro. UK STATE Pensions are obviously assessed in Pounds and then for pensioners living in Spain are transferred to a bank in Spain in Euros. During the last three years the amount of Euro income from a £500 monthly state pension payment will have ranged between 535€ and 650€ – a significant difference that can have a greater impact on the standard of living more than inflation or investment returns. When investing money or making decisions on receiving income from Pension pots, choosing the correct currency for payment is of paramount importance. Every personal situation is different so what I would urge every ex-pat to do is look at their own financial situation and consider how best to make sure you protect yourself from losses that fluctuating currency values can impact. 100,000€ is currently worth around £78,740 and it was not too long ago the same €100,000 was worth over
£93,000. It is possible to spread the risk of currency impact and without costing a fortune to do so. There are investment products that can accept one currency and value or redeem in another currency. Failing to diversify can seriously damage your wealth and if you think you are overweight in one currency then you should urgently look at reviewing this now. One problem I often find is that a low risk cautious investor will have all their investments and pensions in Sterling, converting just enough to live on, (mainly because of having an affinity to the Pound). This person lives in Spain and intends to do so for the rest of his days - this is the person who is most at risk to currency change impact and often does not realise the huge amount of risk he is taking by failing to diversify. If you need advice or have any questions regarding the above you can contact me on 657 684 094 or email keith.littlewood@blacktowerfm.com
The above information was correct at the time of preparation and does not constitute investment advice and you should seek advice from a professional adviser before embarking on any financial planning activity. For those who have private medical cover with a Spanish company By Millie Munro Services YOU MAY or may not know that when cancelling your private medical insurance two months’ notice is required in writing which is a Spanish legal requirement. If you are looking to change from your existing company, now is the time to obtain quotations to enable you to make a knowledgeable decision before the end of October because under Spanish law you will have signed for one year’s contract which runs from 1st January until 31st December. QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN CHOOSING A HEALTH PLAN Selecting a private health insurance plan doesn’t have to be complicated. Part of making the best choice is knowing what questions to ask. Use this list to compare health insurance plans before making your decision:
Simon
How much will I have to pay for medical care? What benefits are included? Are routine examinations included? Will I have to call my doctor before going to the emergency department? What happens if I am taken ill away from home? Are there any co-payments? Is there a waiting period before I’m fully covered? Are there limitations to the policy such as pre-existing conditions? Is dental care included in my premium? Is the policy cancelled when I reach a certain age? In tough economic times, our tendency is to do without. We’ll find innovative ways to pinch pennies and make sacrifices. One expense that may end up on the chopping block is your private health insurance. However, if you take a closer look at the news, you will see that health insurance is one thing that should remain in your budget no matter how bad things get. Carrying health insurance can provide peace of mind and protect you against the unexpected. Could divorce maintenance or alimony to an ex-spouse be modified? DEAR SOLICITOR, I live in Javea and the Denia courts have stated that I must pay a compensation to my ex-spouse, and although I have appealed to the Provincial Audience of Alicante, the court has confirmed the divorce decree. Is there something I can do or do I have to pay this money every month forever ? DEAR READER, thank you for your enquiry. As mentioned in some previous articles, family law court decisions and orders are not set in stone. The Spanish Civil Code itself provides that the “measures” or decisions made by the judge in a divorce or separation court process, in relation to the children, use of the family home, charges and expenses of the marriage, etc., could be modified when there is a substantial change in circumstances. Concerning maintenance, support or alimony ( in Spanish also PENSIONES), Article 100 of the Spanish Civil Code says that once the amount of the maintenance and its update review are fixed by a court order, the decision can only be modified by
substantial changes in the fortunes of either spouse. Therefore, to change your divorce decree once it is definitive and non-appealable, would require a substantial change in circumstances, you must prove to the judge that they were important enough to justify the modification of what was stated in the original judgment, thus reducing or removing the obligation to pay the monthly amount to your spouse. In these cases, it could be difficult to determine what is considered a substantial change of circumstances or fortune of either spouse. As an example, I want to highlight court decisions from of a very interesting article found on the legal website: noticias jurídicas, about the latest decisions from the Spanish Supreme Court (CS) regarding
family law. Court Order of 25th/03/2014, said that it must not be considered a substantial enough change to modify alimony or maintenance, when the spouse beneficiary of it gains employment, if in the divorce agreement it had been expressly provided that this does not justify changing the maintenance. In its judgment of 17th/03/2014 the CS establishes its doctrine on whether an inheritance may result in the modification or termination of alimony or maintenance. CS interprets that to receive an inheritance could be a fundamental change in the fortune of the heir, and as a non predictable event, could be a clear change in the economic situation of the heir receiving the support, and therefore can result in the amendment or termination of it.

Discover Spain’s Old Masters
CELEBRATIONS DEDICATED to the 400-year-old life of painter El Greco are coming to a conclusion as new classes celebrate the skills of Spain’s Master artists.
El Greco’s Miracle of Christ Healing the Blind
By Jack Troughton Next month Karla Daracos starts classes in Javea dedicated to teaching adults wanting to enlighten themselves about the work, lives and times of El Greco, Velazquez, Goya, Sorolla, Picasso and Dali. “El Greco was a very intelligent and fascinating artist who made Toledo his home,” said Karla, a fine art teacher at the Hemeroscopea Training School in Javea Old Town.
“He concerned himself with painting the most mysterious stories from the Bible in order that his creativity could not be controlled.” With an honours degree in fine Arts, Karla, a Canadianborn educator, understands the allure and importance of Spanish artists over the last 500 years. And the Spanish Masters are a series of educational lectures illustrated with slideshows. They also include films
and field trips for students wanting to explore and discover a rich history. Karla teaches at the private Hemeroscopea in English, a modern facility near the public car park. The teaching agenda can be downloaded from www.SpainLifestyle.com and people can register to attend lectures via the website or by calling 648 156 066 – registration guarantees course notes.

Seeing the world with Worldwide Horizons
WORLDWIDE HORIZONS have been operating in their new offices at La Zenia for almost three years, during which time sales have gone from strength to strength, to the delight of team Yvonne and Laura.

INITIALLY FOCUSING on cruises and flights to and from Spain, in recent years they have also become known as the place to go for holidays of a ‘different’ kind to those usually offered on the Costas: Alaskan Cruises; the Luxury Royal Mountaineer train in Vancouver; and Costa Rica and holidays ‘down under’ are just some of the destinations regularly booked through this busy office. “It’s been a phenomenal three years,” confirms Manager Yvonne, “We still handle the usual bookings - flights, package holidays, cruises, day tours and coach tours around Spain, but it’s great to see people choosing new destinations – and every time we’re asked for somewhere new, it’s a challenge for us to find out what there is to do, the best place to stay and hopefully help our customers get the most value for money! We also try to keep on top of new products and destinations, regularly attending shows and presentations of new ships and destinations, whenever we get the chance.” The latest of these invitations was a tour of the new Oasis of the Seas while it was in Barcelona, giving the sales team a first hand experience of facilities on board the World’s largest ship. Opportunities such as these ensure that the team has firsthand, invaluable experience when making bookings. Other services offered include foreign currency orders and also Worldwide Visas: “We have many customers come to us to obtain the necessary visas for travel that they have already purchased, only to find out that the visa application is far more complicated than initially thought. “This is why we offer our advice in the planning stages, as some destinations can be particularly difficult to obtain a Visa, and in some instances holidays have been denied if customers do not have the correct travel documentation. Anyone in doubt or wanting to discuss a destination should contact Worldwide Horizons - we will do our very best to help.” Worldwide Horizons: Call 96 676 1492 or email travel@whtravel.es

Forceful aspects of your astral chart focus on unfinished business, and if you are to make a foray into solution then go for it right now. The niggling doubt of knowing you are right and preferring to be wrong just has to be overcome; and with Jupiter on the side of good fortune, and Uranus magnanimous as ever, you have nothing to lose. Venus showers attention on your brotherly planet Libra, hoping that freedom and romance can be something rather more than the removal of obstacles in a persistently difficult pathway of love. Throw caution to the wind and follow your basic instincts, they have served you well in the past and they are about to forge a new future for you. Mercury takes on a stubborn and protective Scorpio. If someone feels the need to hide something from you then it cannot be of any advantage, and no rain should fall on your parade. The many subtle changes of late have taught you to be yourself, and that is what really counts right now, above all your intuition wins hands down, let it! Just after the New Moon it feels right to go for your heartfelt instinct right now, and it is time to rid yourself of those, who would be friends, chipping in with advice you have no intention of taking. Only you know the route ahead, though you would be foolish to think it leads to a bed of roses. It is however your destiny, and a dead cert. The Sun is in dalliance with Neptune, and so it is time to open your heart and take the next step in a romantic affair. You need to eliminate fear from this procedure too, as it is very much a case of nothing ventured nothing gained, and there is everything to lose if you fail to make a connection that is out there, staring you in the face. Fight fire with fire, especially as elemental energies are around you and willing you to accept a challenge. You have been waiting for things to happen, but before you take on the next frontier put things into context from all angles. You may be urged to look before you leap as Cosmic intervention has already put the cat amongst the pigeons. Venus pays you loyal attention and stirs the emotions that allow you to better love yourself and others, because you seem to be out on a limb at present. Whatever has happened it is time to put things well and truly into context, because you will need your wits about you over the next few weeks; as your advice is sorely needed as a resolve. Mercury opens channels of communication that you have chosen to close down. Sulking won’t help you now, or ever, and what is needed is the ability to get down to brass tacks and make alternative plans. You are not running away, but surely now, more than ever, comes a need to move on, and to decide who is going with you. Jupiter has ideas that are linked to your purpose and stability, and only you can decide to give someone a second chance right now. You have had your say and cleared the air, but now there comes a time when your past feelings have to be put aside, and help given where it is needed, for the sake of all others involved in this debacle. Implications have put you in a difficult situation. In hindsight you would not have got involved, but you are, and it is important that the truth be told once and for all. Quite why someone needs to openly lie is not evident, making matters worse, but it is important that your side of the story is heard, before others judge you unfairly. The lucky streak which sees Jupiter intervening in an important matter brings things to a very satisfactory conclusion. The Direct of Pluto is accusative and soul searching, but that cannot hurt you since you are the one who has nothing to hide, and everything to gain by the continuation of current plans, and in sticking to your guns! Finances need to be checked as an unexpected purchase tips the budget into the red somewhat. Money is due to you, and your sense of equilibrium is what usually balances the books very well, but do not be too proud to ask for what you deserve right now, as cash flow stability needs to be better established in the current scheme of things.

Keep things under wraps as this is neither the time nor the place to strike out. Reconsider an offer which will seem rather better the second time around. This year shows you releasing unwarranted ties and making the very best of things!

Global travellers
OUR LOVED ones often show their survival to us from the Spirit World, and they choose their method and depth of contact. Sadly not all messages are received, but those that are form the treasured memories of the love that truly never has to die, if you just don’t let it. I was recently asked if our loved ones travel with us as we ourselves travel, and I thought that the reply needed a bit of an explanation. My own Mother had a connection with Richmond in Surrey, and whenever I walked along the towpath to College in nearby Twickenham, years after her death, I found myself always talking to her, and often getting a reply too. Quite why that was such a receptive area I do not know, but communication was good. I have to say that contact now is sporadic because time has moved us both on to live different lives, and I am sure that reincarnation has seen her move onwards. We do have to take every opportunity whatever it could be, as looking back at what could have happened becomes the deepest of regrets in time. So, yes, Spirit travels. My Father always communicates with me when I am in his native city of New York. Each and every time somebody asks me directions on the subway I find myself giving them correct information, but that, somehow, it isn’t me doing the talking; despite my travelling the subways to learn my way around such a wonderful city as a little boy tightly holding my Daddy’s hand. You can be anywhere in the World when Spirit comes through, and
Kenny’s Postbag
when I am travelling it is always a wonder that Spirit has such a global reasoning, often proving the depths of it at the most unusual and unexpected times. The Spirit World is a global safety net for the inhabitation of souls who have passed over and have the strength to survive, just as our World takes best care of the living souls that currently exist on this Planet. Sadly there are many failures here on Earth, but in Spirit things get done and dusted in an equality of the need to survive and to spiritually thrive. I once had a Thai client who came to see me with an interpreter. The client was very nervous, reservedly respectful, but also had never met a Medium before. I wondered what I could do to make her feel at home and tried expressions and the biggest smile I could muster. At this point the client’s Mother came through to me and told me that her daughter’s name in Thai meant little white flower. When I welcomed my client by name and then called her small flower she knelt sobbing at my feet. She told her interpreter that she felt that her Mother was with her, and that day we did what she had travelled to me to do, and we both said goodbye to the wonderful Thai Mother who had told me how to greet her beloved daughter. My client had missed her dying Mother’s last breath and wanted to say goodbye, and she did that day, albeit on her knees for most of the time! We are all international. None more than Spirit as they are free to travel the face of this Earth…if they want to!

KENNY, YOU always talk of the Spirit World. It was always Heaven my family went to when they died, and I was brought up with this, why was there a need to change? Margaret K. - Hi Margaret. I use the term Spirit World because it is the holding station for all soul survivors on the, “Other Side”. If you come from a Christian family of course they would have talked about Heaven, but Muslim and Jewish souls would not be there, and they would be deeply offended if their religions were not catered for. As my clients come from all walks of life, and are of varying beliefs; and I support them of course, I refer to the Spirit World in utter defence of each person’s right to their particular named destination after death, and, along with other Spiritualists, in using this highly appropriate and correct terminology, nothing whatsoever has changed. showbiz goss Celebrity Clips ROBIN THICKE is doing all he can to hold on to the writing credits of 2013 song ‘Blurred Lines’ as it made No1 in over 20 countries around the world. The problem he has is twofold with it now being claimed that the tune was stolen from Marvin Gaye’s 1977 hit Got To Give It Up, and if that’s not enough soapy bubble, Thicke’s co-writer Pharrell Williams is saying he wrote most of the song. OMG! TALKING ABOUT courtroom difficulties, US rapper Nicki Minaj had to deal with a US$30m lawsuit from a Terrance Davidson who claims she has been copying his wig designs and selling them online after they stopped working together. The two became a team in 2010 and attained huge status with the ‘Pink Upper Bun’ wig for Nicki’s video of song ‘Super Bass’. The case is the first ever property lawsuit over wigs.

Will George be changing his name to Ebenezer Clooney? GEORGE CLOONEY was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1961 to mother Nina, who was a beauty pageant queen as well as a councilwoman, and a father who was a former anchorman and game show host. He also has Irish, German and English ancestry. That’s quite a mix going on there which suggests young George was always going to get a half decent shot at a life in the world of showbiz, and boy has he ended up delivering. There’s a fairly good chance that the man is better known for his ruggedly handsome good looks and that silly Nespresso commercial, but George Clooney has had quite some career in the movie business, so much so that he is going to be honoured with a Golden Globe in January for his ‘outstanding contributions’ both in front of and behind the camera. The two times Oscar winner and three times Golden Globe winner will be presented with the Cecil B DeMille award, and will join the lofty gathering of Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, and directors Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, all of whom have been similarly recognised. Clooney’s work behind the camera came in 2012, when he co-produced Oscar winning ‘Argo’ with Ben Affleck, and talking about top movies, one of his Golden Globes came in my favourite film of his in 2001 called ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ - and if you’ve not seen it yet give yourself a treat … its fan-dabbie-dozzie! George’s imminent wedding to British-Lebanese human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin (this weekend possibly) has kept the press busy of late, and an interesting footnote to this story is that George claims to be a traditionalist when it comes to weddings, and is refusing to pay anything towards the cost of the nuptials. I’ll leave you make up your own mind if he’s a bit Scrooge or not! THERE’S A reality show going out this month on US channel VH1 for a second series that could well make its way to a UK station, and the reason this is likely to happen is because it’s called ‘Dating Naked’. Single peeps are sent off to a tropical island for the ultimate blind first date, in the buff, and the show is pulling in a million viewers per episode … I wonder why!
FOR THOSE of you who might be like me and would love to pull it all together and finally go to the Glastonbury music festival, go and get your pen and notepad and write down the following ... Weekend tickets will go on sale at 9am next Sunday October 5th and all tickets will be available from www.glastonbury.seetickets.com I’m definitely going to does this … see you there!

Present perfect
– negatives and questions
Do you have the speed to lead? Big Trophy and Prize Money Night with Velocity Racing Saturday October 4th!
THIS IS the last of the articles about the “recent past” or present perfect tense before we move on to pastures new. Here is a text written a while ago (and at a different time of year!) which exemplifies the use of the tense along with a few other bits and pieces. ¡Hola!
Apart from the abundant use of the recent past tense there are a few other things to comment on. Firstly the final expression: “la cuesta de enero”. This means something like “the uphill struggle of January”. “Cuesta” normally means a slope, but “la cuesta de enero” is a particular kind of difficult upward slope which those of you who work will identify with and those who have retired can perhaps vaguely remember. As well as the psychologist effects of returning to work in the middle of winter, it also refers to the economic problems left by overspending over the Christmas period. My cat finds January particularly arduous with people coming in and out of the house and all different times of day. Finally, I would like to link back to things we looked at some time ago – namely for the formation of negatives and questions. We saw that to form

negative sentences all we need to do is place the word “no” before the verb. The same principle applies to all verb tenses, including this one. For example: “No he hecho los deberes”. (I haven’t done my homework) When we name the subject, the word “no” stays in front of the verb. “Mi hermano no ha vendido su casa” (My brother hasn’t sold his house). Similarly when we are forming closed questions, that is questions that require “yes” or “no” as an answer, we simply make statements sound like questions with our voice, without any change in word order. “Tu hermano ha vendido su casa” (Your brother has sold his house) “¿Tu hermano ha vendido su casa?” (Has your brother sold his house?). In the next article we will look at the text translation first and then I think it’s time we learnt about “open questions” as opposed to “closed” ones. ¡Hasta la semana que viene!

U3A Moraira-Teulada Dining Group
MORAIRA-TEULADA U3A Dining out group is normally so large it is split into two cohorts, with two different groups going to the same restaurant two weeks apart and a different venue each month. For the September meeting, however, the combined group of 74 people all went to Satari’s for a post-summer reunion, with Barry Peters providing live music for dancing. Abi Satari and his team looked after the group with their usual friendly efficiency despite a last minute threatened downpour moving the whole event inside. The food, service and ambience were all great, and most people stayed on to dance. A hugely successful evening and a big thank you to Pat and Brian Clarke, this month´s organisers.
Showboat fundraiser

By Irena Bodnarec DO YOU long to watch some of the fabulous Benidorm acts but cannot stay up late enough? Well don´t worry because this Sunday, 28th September you should head to Levi´s Showboat for an afternoon of wall to wall entertainment - and all in the name of charity. Once again the two fundraising legends of Benidorm - Wayne and Tad, owner of the Yorkshire Pride pubs have joined forces to raise some desperately needed funds for the Emaus childrens charity - in particular the home in Relleu. Yes the Government should be funding it but with the cutbacks in Spain, due to the economic situation they are in a desperate situation. The children in the Relleu home have already suffered enough, having been taken into care because of the impossible situation they were living in or because they have no family - the majority are only aged between two and twelve, a really heartbreaking scenario. Wayne has rallied some fantastic Benidorm acts, which are all giving their time for free while Tad has been tasked with the raffles and has collected an amazing assortment of prizes, all donated by local bars and businesses. The afternoon will run from 2pm until 6pm and there is a nominal 3 euro entry - which will ALL go towards the fundraiser.

Richard G Sykes, RHAD FSHAA Premier Hearing Services
The effects of hearing loss are more than physical WHILE YOUR hearing loss may seem insignificant now — something you can deal with by simply turning the TV louder or asking friends to repeat themselves — it impacts more than you think. Hearing loss can have a negative impact on your ability to learn, socialize and enjoy life. Untreated patients are more likely to miss important information in meetings and phone calls, and make mistakes at work. Hearing problems can lead to avoidance or withdrawal from social situations, social rejection and loneliness. Friends often avoid talking to people with hearing loss because of the difficulty communicating. People with uncorrected hearing impairment earn less than people who hear normally.1 To make matters worse, studies have shown that the effects of hearing loss are cumulative. Just as muscles grow weak from lack of use, the brain loses its ability to process sounds and recognize speech without regular auditory stimulation. By the time you finally acknowledge your hearing loss is real, you may have already lost the full appreciation of sounds and music you once enjoyed.
WHY WAIT? Everyone has different reasons for why they put off seeking help for hearing loss, from price issues and vanity concerns to preconceived and often outdated ideas of how hearing aids perform. The good news is that today’s hearing aids — like all hightech devices — have come a long way in terms of looks and performance. And independent research shows that hearing aid usage has a positive effect on: Earning power Communication in relationships Intimacy and warmth in family relationships Ease in communication Emotional stability Sense of control over life events Perception of mental functioning Physical health Source: www.betterhearing.org

Volvo Ocean Race NEXT MONTH sees the start of the Volvo round the world Ocean Race. This year, the race starts in Alicante. RTN sent a reporter to bring readers as much inside information as possible. AN INTERVIEW WITH THE CEO OF VOLVO OCEAN RACING 11 ports, 38,739 nautical miles: where the race is going and what will the sailors go through? It sounds like a very long way? It is: the race girdles the globe. Those 11 ports are in 11 different countries, starting in Europe and spread across Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Americas before finishing back in Europe – a truly global circumnavigation. So where and when does it all begin? The race starts in the Mediterranean in the Spanish town of Alicante, with an In-Port race on 4th October, 2014. The teams then set out for Cape Town on the first leg a week later. This opener is something of a classic, racing from north to south into the trade wind belts, with an equator crossing
and the Doldrums to negotiate in the middle. And of course the final dash into the Southern Ocean to ride the big breezes and waves to South Africa. Ouch... so what’s next? More of the same, with added danger and complexity, for the rest of the 38,739 miles! After a stopover and more In-Port racing in Cape Town, the fleet will head back north into the Indian Ocean to Abu Dhabi, for the Asian section of the race. After Abu Dhabi its east to a stopover in the tropical Chinese resort of Sanya. Then the race heads south once again, through the Pacific to New Zealand and the City of Sails, Auckland. I’m no geography whizz, but I reckon we’re about half-way round? On this occasion you would be absolutely right. The next leg runs
across the Southern Ocean, around Cape Horn and up the South American coast and it has been a feature of the race since its earliest days. Expect some great pictures from the boats as they ride the rollercoaster swells to the planet’s most iconic headland. And so to America? The South American stopover is in Itajaí, Brazil, and it’s followed by a race to North America – back across the trade wind belts and the equator - and a stopover in the famous sailing town of Newport, Rhode Island. Expect enthusiasm. Lots of it. Nearly home? Yes, but there will still be plenty of points at stake. The final oceanic dash is across the Atlantic to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, before the race begins a sequence
of short legs that will test both tactics and stamina. In quick order they will race from Lisbon to Lorient in France, and then on to Gothenburg in Sweden, with a pitstop in The Hague (Netherlands)
on the way. And that’s it? Almost. It will all be over after the final In-Port race in Gothenburg on 27th June, 2015.

tech Fitness Meets Technology Modern Technology is evolving in many areas of the world and is beginning to play an integral part in the development of our lives. Areas in particular that are being positively affected by the current tech bubble are the medical industry and more recently, the world of fitness. With the new global interest in smart watches, an opening was created for apps that can be used to help assist and progress every day exercising by helping to track, coach and review yourself during and after exercise. Recently we met with Jacobs Gym in Alfaz Del Pi to introduce the Samsung Gear Fit to a brand new, high energy exercise routine known as Mini Tramp / Rebound. Jacobs Gym fitness expert Sarah Scrivener and her class displayed the modern day fitness craze that is taking the area by storm and helping many people to achieve their fitness goals. We were able to demonstrate the fitness related features of the watch. Using special sensors, apps can monitor your heart rate / monitor how many calories you burn and help set and up hold personal fitness goals, showing the massive potential for Smart Watches in the world of fitness. We will be announcing future events with Jacobs Gym and other fitness experts on the Costa Blanca soon. Our website will be updated today with links / photos and videos from the night, and you can find Jacobs Gym Alfaz on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus.

Mind of its own...
DEAR AUNTY: Like many folk of my age (almost 92) I have either a computer problem, or maybe a printer with a mind of its own. Having first of all selected, from the Formatting toolbar, both the style and size of text which I considered suitable for the piece of text which I had in mind, I proceed to go ahead and write the first page. Wisely, I believe, I decided to print one copy of the written text. I am very pleased that I did, for the result produced by the printer was very different both in style and size from what I had instructed from the Tool bar. Do I kick the behind of the computer or throw the two-year-old (HP Deskjet F 4280) printer out of our 4th Floor apartment window… something I can ill afford to do, or hopefully plead for your advice of how to overcome the problem. Kind regards, Ray Aunty says: The only pieces of information you have not told me is what program you are using to type your text. And if the font and text size is correct when you do a ‘print preview’. However, I do not think it is the printer that is the problem. I think it is how you are selecting (or rather not selected) the text before you format it is the style you want. In some programs simply selecting the style of text on the toolbar is not enough. You need to select the text you want to change to that style, and then select the style from the toolbar for that text. It will then show on the screen in that style. And will be printed in that style also. However, you may have a printer issue, or an incorrectly loaded driver, in which case the diagnostic tool provided by HP on their website may help. Response: Dear Aunty Virus, many thanks for prompt response to my conundrum
“How do I start on Desktop” Help with laptop
DEAR AUNTY: I followed your advice regarding “How do I start on Desktop”, when I entered ‘gpedit.msc’ , I get the following message: “Windows cannot find ‘gpedit.msc’. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again” I have found out that Group Policy Editor feature is only provided with only Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions for Windows 7 and 8. I think I have the Home edition. Is there another way of achieving this? Thanks and regards, SH Aunty says: Yes, you are correct that some Windows 7 editions (Home Premium, Home Basic and Starter) don’t come with Group Policy Editor. Only Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions come with Group Policy Editor installed. But you can add GPE to these versions. How you do this can be found at http://www.askvg.com/howto-enable-group-policy-editor-gpedit-msc-in-windows-7-home-premium-homebasic-and-starter-editions/
DEAR AUNTY: I wonder if you could help me with my laptop? For the last few days I’ve been getting a message: ‘machineld creator.app.error.report contents. c/documents/admin/locals’. It also mentions ‘avast/ avquidx.dll’? I would appreciate your help in this matter. Many thanks - Noel. Aunty says: My investigations suggest the error message from ‘machine id creator’ actually comes from AVG - another anti-virus program. It would suggest that you have the remnants of a previously installed AVG, and this is conflicting with your Avast (hence the ‘avast/avquidx.dll’). So your previous AVG has not been fully uninstalled, or you still have part of that installation, like AVG toolbar, still installed. And the two anti-virus programs are conflicting, hence the error message. So I think you would need to clean up whichever program you wish to use, and make sure the other is not installed, or has any parts left.

Gadget Inspector investigates: NATPC Upgraded Dual Core 9inch Tablet THIS WEEK the Inspector takes a look at the NATPC 9” Upgraded Dual Core Android Tablet PC. A while ago we featured what is now the predecessor to this tablet. So why are we featuring it again after such a short time? Well that´s easy – it’s now much more powerful and cheaper to boot! No wonder it’s become one of the most popular budget tablets available – the price may be low, but the specifications and performance certainly aren’t. So how does a 9” dual core tablet with dual cameras, WiFi and access to the Google Play Store and Android market for apps for under 80€ sound? Pretty amazing I’d say… The NATPC tablet has a 9” capacitive 5 point touchscreen with a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, perfect for playing videos. A Dual Core (2 x 1.3GHz) processor coupled with a PowerVR dedicated graphics processor, 1GB of DDR3 RAM and running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean provides the grunt. There’s also a very generous 8GB of built-in NAND Flash storage with the option to upgrade by another 32GB with a micro SD card. Your picture taking and Skype video calling needs are ably handled by dual cameras, a 0.3mp front facing and 2.0mp rear facing. Wifi connectivity is comprehensive, with 802.11 b/ g/n functionality, meaning getting connected to the internet
should be easy wherever you are. No problems with access to a full range of apps with Android Market / Google Play Store access built in, so whether games or something more practical there will be plenty of choice. Connecting headphones/other devices/HDMI equipped TV is handled by built-in Micro SD slot; 3.5mm Earphone Jack; Micro USB port and mini HDMI out port. It is supplied with two micro USB to USB cables: one to connect male to male, one for male to female, though if you want to use the HDMI port you will need an additional cable that is not supplied. The Inspectors Verdict: The upgraded NATPC 9” Upgraded Dual Core Android Tablet PC now provides even more amazing value for money considering the performance, resolution and functionality that comes built-in out of the box. And with full access to app stores adding your favourite games/apps is easy! Please note the following is for information and is not intended as an advertisement - visit www. gadget-hound.co.uk/natpc-tablet to purchase the NATPC 9” Upgraded Dual Core Android Tablet PC for

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio
What an incredible month for voting All in favour say AYE! By Tony Myles IF YOU have an interest in golf it will not have escaped your attention that last week a major vote was cast in Scotland and it was one which was surprising for a number of reasons. I am referring to the fact that the Royal and Ancient decided in their wisdom that the 260 year old ban on women becoming members should be abolished and henceforth they would be considered for membership along with gentlemen. WHAT? Did I nod off and wake up in 1914? How is it possible that the Royal and obviously VERY Ancient have managed to retain this discrimination for 260 years? Why was there no major outcry against it? Why were they not held up to ridicule? Yes there were some minor displays but nothing that would have any impact. Am I alone in thinking that whilst congratulations are being offered to the “committee” for voting to amend this piece of antediluvian legislature, they should actually be soundly admonished for taking 260 years to do so. Can you imagine the headlines if the ban had been applied to any minority group? As a result of this major breakthrough the “committee” have decided to fast-track fifteen lady members. Oh I say! Well done you chaps! So two thousand six hundred men and fifteen ladies. I have a message for the R&A “committee” and indeed for every boring, old, traditional golf club that is run on terms that were
acceptable during the days of the Raj! WAKE UP! If you were to tune into the golf program on Bay Radio you would now be well informed about the tangible decline in the game and the somewhat desperate measures that are being considered in order to tempt young new players into the sport. As Campbell mentioned on Saturday Jack Nicolas, who is sought after by all of the world’s major developers, has no new golf courses being constructed in the USA. So whilst the game struggles to find a way of attracting the iPhone generation isn’t it incredible that there still exists these bastions who need a committee to consider the acceptability of half the human race? One major step forward would be to kick out the old regime who are resistant to change. The one who are still willing to believe that
this sport is the exclusive domain of those who steadfastly defend the right of a club to be confined to one sex. Here endeth the rant! Oh and by the way - the RYDER CUP starts this week. Next week we will have a full review of the event and name the heroes and villains. Send me your nominations tony@bayradio.fm Come on Europe!!!
Head 2 Head
Campbell - So how has your week been? Tony M - I had a good round on Monday in fact you could say I won THE GLITTERING PRIZE! Campbell - Are you ok? Tony M - Oh yes I am ALIVE AND KICKING! Campbell - I wish I hadn’t started this. Tony M - Well DON’T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME! Campbell - Are you just trying to get Simple Minds songs into
this week chat? Tony M - I said I would, even though it’s not easy but I PROMISED YOU A MIRACLE. Campbell - I think we can close this off as I can’t see how you can get BELFAST CHILD into it. Tony M - See you at the Marriott on Saturday. Give me a ring when you are on the way, young man In fact ring the BELL FAST, CHILD! Campbell - No, no, no -that was just stupid.

Seat Ibiza I CANNOT believe that 30 years have passed! That’s how long ago the Seat Ibiza was introduced. And boy how things have changed. Think back to 1984 and the launch model was typically boxy but I still remember, aged eight, reading my What Car? magazine that year and lusting after the three-door sports hatchback. It looked sufficiently different from the crowd and certainly clinched my interest. I seem to recall the sale price being around £8,000 at the time and for a car whose unique selling point was the Porsche-designed engine, this seemed a good deal for a new car. However, the build quality was an issue. My test model is just a 1.4-litre petrol, nothing to really write home about on paper, I think. And then I clap eyes on it. It is actually the FR Edition. Again this doesn’t really mean much to me until I carefully cast my eyes around the exterior. There are red brake callipers and twin exhausts. Is this just attractive dressing? Open the doors and there are excellent bucket sports seats, red seatbelts, in fact there is a dash of daring red throughout this five door hatchback. But is she hot, I wonder? Once the ignition is turned, I can report that she most certainly is. There is an attractive rasp to the exhaust the harder the accelerator is pushed. Her figures are impressive too, 0 to 60mph in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. The hard suspension somehow makes travelling feel even faster. as is the way these days the edges have all been rounded off yet the current Ibiza still stands out from the crowd especially with the metallic white finish of the test model. The instrument readings report that it returns around 60mpg during the course of the test on the Isle of Wight, where a variety of roads from sharp inclines to flat are experienced. It will cover over 350 miles on a tank. I am surprised at how spacious the boot is because it is only a small hatchback yet it swallows all our luggage without complaint. This very well made five-door hatchback reminds me so
much of Volkswagens and Audis I have driven. Like them this is robust and extremely well made and even shares some equipment with these models, perhaps most noticeably for me the rear windscreen washer which shoots the water upwards onto the screen just as in the Audi A1. All of this comes as no surprise because these days Seat is part of VW. The test takes place during the hottest day of the year – even hotter than the Bahamas, the radio reports claim. Anyway the Seat’s Garmin satellite navigation system registers over 30º Celsius and the air conditioning is extremely effective at maintaining a comfortable low temperature inside the vehicle. That sat-nav is a bit fiddly to operate at first but the more familiar the driver becomes the easier it is to operate. However, it has to be said that this system, while generally very useful, does have its issues. For instance, we need to find a restaurant in Ventnor and tapped in the postcode only to discover that it wants to takes us down a dangerous sharp left hand turn which is actually one way. Another issue is that the commands are sometimes rather vague such as a right hand turn is referred to as bear right, which are not the same thing in my mind. I can see how it could also be easy to concentrate on the sat-nav’s commands and lose attention on traffic lights, for instance. Therefore, a heightened sense of focus is required when using such a system. Overall, as was always the case the Ibiza is something a little bit different.
