Beauty and the beast

by Jack Troughton CONTROVERSIAL DUMPING in a Costa Blanca beauty spot has angered local residents as they fight to protect the natural landscape – and end the torment of heavy lorries and dust in a residential area.

Earth, rock, and organic waste are being thrown down to fill the rugged ‘barranco’ – a natural ravine – which in the wet season forms a tributary of a fast flowing river that flows into the nearby sea.

Millions of tons of construction waste have been left in the valley, and the brown mud and rock monster is gradually inching forward down the barranco like a glacier.

Benitachell residents attended a town hall meeting on Monday to protest about the situation and after showing Mayor Josep Femenia photographs of the rubble, said he had been “significantly more interested and compassionate” about the problem.

The Barranco Garsiva lies between two zones of the Cumbre del Sol urbanisation and commands dramatic views over the coast. It is understood developer VAPF did have a licence to fill just over 500 square metres of the ravine in 2005 and plant pine trees.

Tom Blackie, a member of a residents committee fighting to stop the dumping, said a “Save Our Barrancos” petition was being circulated and already had 100 signatures – with a target of around 300.

OUTCRY He said in February and March there was an outcry as rubble from new construction was being dumped and complaints were made to both the water board and Seprona, the environmental wing of the Guardia Civil but no action was taken.

“They just disappeared.”

Tom said: “At that point we formed a small committee to represent everyone. This involved people living there and everyone on this part of Cumbre. We started making formal requests for information. The history is the developer has been dumping excavation rubbish there from about 2001 without permission.

He said to date there had been a “total failure” of elected representatives to stop the dumping and end the “misery” of residents. The tipping started again on 1st September, immediately after the traditional August holidays and the usual ban on construction.

And residents maintain the environmental department of the Valencia Government had not controlled the “natural heritage” of the landscape and the building in the area.

“They do recognise the builder will always create excavation material, which should be disposed of correctly – not in the way the barranco is being filled,” said Tom.

by Jack Troughton FORMER SERVICEMEN are being urged to oppose moves to end income tax relief for pensioners living outside the UK. Chairman of the Royal Air Forces Association European Area, Wing Commander Bob Hunt highlighted the “subject of concern” at the 2014 Autumn Conference.

Speaking at Benidorm’s Melia hotel, he said a discussion document was being circulated by the Treasury over the possible restriction on tax relief for ex-service pen-

sioners who lived abroad.

And the chairman called for “all concerned” to sign the e-petition opposing the proposed changes outlined in the paper.

Wing Commander Hunt congratulated Mrs Margaret Duff on her award of the BEM and Mr Graham august on being appointed an MBE – and all the area branches for raising over £74,000 for the Wings Appeal.

Hosted by RAFA’s Costa Blanca North Branch, the weekend conference was attended by Area President, Air Marshall Peter Walker, Secretary General of the Asso-

ciation Nick bunting, 14 branch delegates and numerous visitors.

It started with a cocktail reception where Careline theatre entertained with excerpts from the show “Lest We Forget” and songs and sketches remembering both World Wars.

And during a Gala Dinner, a raffle raised 1,280€ for the current Wings Appeal. A further 420€ was added with the final act of the conference, a Service of Remembrance taken by Father Steve Foster, Chaplain to the North Costa Blanca Branch.

IMPACT “However, it is fair to say the owner of VAPF has met with us. He has tried to reduce the impact but, obviously, he is a businessman who is finding the most cost effective way of looking after his business.”

At the height of this year’s dumping, Tom said there were 15 lorries an hour passing the front of his house on their way to the ravine, turning at the end of the street and passing the rear – and then returning.

“At worst it was 60 lorries an hour there and back...plus the dirt, dust and noise – and the drivers urinating into the barranco,” he added.

Tom believes when the rains finally arrive there will be a river of mud flowing into the sea – something the coastal authorities might not find acceptable.

“We are also worried about the stability of the construction waste. As the mud is washed away, dangerous sink holes may appear,” he said.

“Certainly we are trying to take this problem higher up within the various authorities concerned.”

On Monday, Keith, Jenny, and his successor as Worshipful Master, James Mackintosh (pictured) presented a cheque to the school. Also set to benefit are the Alzheimer’s Association with a

1,050€ donation, the MABS Cancer support Group will receive 1,030€, and the Children’s Preventorio in Gandia 1,000€.

The fundraising included a Bonfire Night Party last November, a Christmas Party, a coffee morning, a fish and chip supper with the Costa Barber Singers, a summer buffet, and earlier this month a Ladies Festival.

Keith told RTN: “They all said my term would fly by and it did! But I thoroughly

enjoyed it and we made a lot of money – and we enjoyed making the money at all these various functions.

“James is now becoming Worshipful Master for the first time in 49 years as a Freemason – it was a privilege to install him.”

He said the school was using the money to buy a special teaching programme for the computer and educational table games for its young pupils.

Spain’s knuckles rapped by EU and UN over using force on migrants

by Jan Gamm THE EU has warned Spain that the Commission would not hesitate to take action if any further acts of “undue Force” were perpetrated by the Spanish authorities on migrants trying to enter the country at the borders in Ceuta and Melilla.

The question of Spain’s border policies arose when evidence was presented of Spanish border officers allegedly beating a sub-Saharan man as he attempted to climb the fence at Melilla.

DOZENS INJURED: SOME KILLED MEP Josu Juaristi Abaunz said that the situation in Melilla continues to worsen, with dozens of migrants injured and some even killed by border security forces. In response Cecilia Malmström, Swedish EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, stated that Spain is not permitted to use force to prevent illegal immigrants from breaching the borders in Ceuta and Melilla.

The fences at Melilla and Ceuta are sometimes overwhelmed by the sheer number of migrants that enter Spain illegally with the border guards facing an impossible task to contain a situation that threatens to get out of control.

UN Refugee Agency spokesman William Spindler said: “UNHCR is concerned over a proposal by Spain to legalise automatic returns of people trying to cross border fences into its enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.” Mr Spindler told the press that although UNHCR understood the “complexity” of border management in the two enclaves, on the spot deportations could fall foul of the 1951 Refugee Convention, an international treaty protecting people who flee their homelands.

TRAFFIC POLICE are concerned following a weekend in which eight people died and four were seriously injured in just 24 hours on Spanish roads. The fatalities occurred in Valencia, Soria, Huesca and Pontevedra with further serious accidents in Murcia, Cadiz and Toledo.

Rajoy apologises for PP corruption

by Jan Gamm IN SENATE his week Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy apologised to the country on behalf of his party for appointing people who are “not worthy of holding public office” and who abused their positions. He said he shared the “anger and weariness” felt by the Spanish people in the face of t h e “personal greed of public officials.”

The apology comes as more PP party members were suspended this week in response to accusations of fraud and corruption from ex-PP Treasurer Luis Barcenas.

They will be expelled should the charges prove accurate. And Rajoy himself is among those accused by Barcenas, along with former deputy prime minister Rodrigo Rato.

EU urged to act over expat vote

PRESSURE CONTINUES to mount on the European Union to act over Britain’s ’15-year’ rule which prevents expats from voting in UK elections – effectively disenfranchising them after exceeding the time limit.

Jacqui Cotterill – a resident of Parcent and the village’s deputy mayor – is travelling to Brussels to present a petition in the European Parliament on 11th November asking for the “scrapping” of the time limit on having a voice at elections. And she will also call for citizens who are long term residents in other EU countries to have a vote in the country where “they live, work, and pay taxes in.”

Jacqui is also asking expats to sign an online petition, allowing MEPs sitting on the influential European Parliament’s petitions committee to see there is widespread support for “British citizens who are disenfranchised and unable to vote and hold their governments and politicians to account.”

The European Commission has already urged Britain to change its voting laws for expats. It argues that expats are being punished for taking up their right of freedom of movement within the EU. Sheila took a quick snap of the visitor. “I couldn’t – or wouldn’t – get any closer for another shot. I couldn’t see any limbs and its jerky movements certainly didn’t resemble a snake.

“It just flexed and rolled around. Of course, it could have been injured or just distressed. We would be very interested to have it identified and relieved to hear that firstly, it was harmless – and, secondly, rare!”

And while appealing for the help of nature lovers, Sheila underlined they disliked killing any creatures. “Alan moved it carefully into an adjoining orchard!”

Plots offered for new Police Station

BENIDORM COUNCIL have offered the Ministry of Interior 3 plots of land, located next to the Palace of Justice Court House - opposite the bus station, to build a new National Police station. Each of the plots are over 4,000 square metres and already owned by the municipality, although a spokesperson for the Council has said that they are willing to make more land available if required. The Council have stated that it is a priority to have a new National Police Station but accepts that in reality it will not happen immediately, but be more of a medium term project. The current National Police Station, located on Calle Apollo in the Old Town is too small for the 400 officers stationed there and parking is a major issue for both staff and visitors. Pepe Marcet, Councillor of Security said that taking into account the number of tourists it serves every year, it is totally inadequate and reminiscent of a third world country.

Consulate reaches out in Iceland BRITISH CONSULATE staff and members of the resident healthcare team are heading for Iceland supermarkets in November to help shoppers with any worries – and check they are properly registered for healthcare.

Vice Consul Lloyd Milen, who is based at the Alicante Consulate, said: “We are really grateful for Iceland for giving us the opportunity to use the stores to talk to British nationals.

“I hope that as well as doing the weekly shop, Brits will have a chance to talk to us about what

their concerns are and how we can help them.

“And it is also a chance for shoppers to check that they are registered for healthcare and get answers to any questions they may have about living in Spain.”

Tasteless Halloween fancy dress

A TASTELESS Halloween costume replicating a Hasmat suit worn by medical staff treating patients suffering with the deadly Ebola virus is being offered for hire for around 60€ on the internet. The costume features a white costume dress accessorised by a hooded safety visor, breathing apparatus and gloves with yellow boots available separately. A male version of the outfit is also available. And music venue Scotch of St James in London’s Mayfair is advertising a Halloween event called ‘Saturday Night Ebola Fever’ with flyers featuring the costume. Organisers have defended their decision to hold the event saying it will raise cash for ‘Doctors Without Borders’. However, Tom Dannatt, CEO and founder of Street Child, a charity linked with an Ebola appeal, has commented that anyone trying to make a profit from the crisis in any way is “reprehensible.”

Spain’s hidden job market

A RECENT employment assessment by Lee Hecht Harrison, a division of the Adecco Group which specialises in Outplacement and Talent Development, has revealed that only 20% of jobs generated in Spain are ‘visible’. The remaining 80% are locked in the ‘‘hidden market’ - made up of vacancies that companies choose not to publicise, preferring to recruit in-house, from private sources and recommendations and via people they trust. Some jobs are kept ‘shrouded’ in order to avoid letting competitors know that a position is vacant, especially at top management level. It has also emerged that this ‘hidden’ market in Spain has grown since the beginning of the recession when it represented between 60% and 70% of the job market.

by Jan Gamm CANADIAN ARCHITECT Frank Gehry, who designed the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, lost his temper with some Spanish journalists this week as he arrived in Spain to receive the Prince of Asturias Award for his contribution to the arts. He made a crude gesture with his middle finger in response to being questioned on how he viewed his critics...

THE MAD GENIUS And 85-year-old Gehry certainly has plenty of critics. He has been dubbed ‘the Mad Genius’, ‘The World’s Worst Living Architect’ and other uncomplimentary names to describe his work that often resembles a random child’s Lego construction about to fall down!

In addition to the Guggenheim Gehry’s list of achievements includes the Walt Disney

Concert Hall, Los Angeles; the Dancing House in Prague and the Gehry Tower, Hanover. His latest project, the Fondation Louis Vuitton museum in Paris, opened earlier this month.

And when asked how he felt about those who accused him of producing ‘showy architecture’ he raised his middle finger and said, “Once in a while, however, there’s a small group of people who do something special. 2015 Bank Holidays confirmed LAST FRIDAY, the General Directorate of Employment published in the BOE – Boletin Oficial del Estado - the Bank Holidays for 2015. It is published every day except Sunday and contains all the laws passed by Parliament.

Regional Governments in Spain have the ability to change certain holidays, but the following eight dates have been confirmed as National holidays across the entire country for next year – one less than this year.

Some years ago there was a debate on changing the day of week on which holidays fall to avoid ‘bridging days’ meaning workers taking off an extra day’s holiday – but both this year and next year there was little need to amend many. This was particularly applicable when Bank Holidays fell at the weekend.

Better safe than sorry

FIRST ALLOW me to express my enjoyment of RTN, especially the Letters Page and cartoon.

In the past week, I have received emails purportedly from professional people I know asking me to join the social media site called LinkedIn. To be honest, I am not up on these latest social networking places to get connected, so I was hesitant to rush into something unfamiliar. I felt quite uneasy, particularly when the supposed LinkedIn site wanted the password to our email account. That certainly got a red flag in my brain indicating something was amiss.

So I emailed one of the people asking her if she had requested I join her LinkedIn site. Wouldn’t you know it, she quickly replied saying she hadn’t sent the email. So someone pretending to be LinkedIn sent it to gain access to our email.

If you get emails supposedly from friends and you suspect it is not genuine, especially if you have been asked for your email account password, please do not supply it – check first with the person to make sure it is not some slippery con artist trying to access your account.

Better safe than sorry.

Lord Freud

OVER THE months we have read with curious interest about Lord Freud and the fraud expats caught on the Costa Blanca defrauding the system. With a name like Freud, he seems the right man to deal with fraud.

One of our neighbours lamented how his ex wants to come to Spain but she won’t because she would have to give up her benefits from the UK. She, along with him, feel they are entitled to sponge off the rest of us. If that expat was looking for sympathy at the plight of his work-challenged ex, he came looking in the wrong place!

Social Services appeal ONCE AGAIN San Miguel de Salinas Social Services are asking for help with their Christmas Campaign for the less fortunate of our local community.

There are more than 70 families registered with Social Services in the village, most with children up to the age of 17. They need non-perishable foods along with some festive fare and toys so they can make up some food parcels and gifts to give for Christmas and The Three Kings.

The main collection point is in the old town hall in San

Miguel, but there are also a number of local restaurants, bars and businesses that have kindly agree to be collection points. They are: Dolphin Properties; Captain Morgan’s Bar; Mirador Restaurant and The Nook Bar. Social Services are asking for all items to be given by 5th December so that they may be individually wrapped for each family and child.

The forgotten, special people

AS REMEMBRANCE DAY draws near, many will remember the casualties of conflicts since World War I who gave their lives for us.

Included in these statistics are the sometimes forgotten people, especially those involved in recent events: some have been discharged or left the services for differing reasons; some do not qualify for assistance; some are too proud to ask for help; some do not know where to go for help and do not have the love and support of a family to help them through difficult times.

Some injuries are not seen. One young man slept in his car in freezing temperatures for weeks. Another was given a guitar donated by the public because he had performed at a big festival in the past and he is now beginning to feel positive again… Another 38-year-old had a heart attack and died alone in his flat. And one young man, an ex-Royal Marine, said he didn’t know why he was in church because of the things he’d seen and done in the line of duty.

So spare a thought for our returning and serving heroes.

Poland shows solidarity over sanctions POLAND STANDS firm over the EU’s economic sanctions against the “unreliable predator” Russia, said Costa Blanca resident Margaret Hales after a visit to Warsaw.

by Jack Troughton The penalties were imposed after Russia’s ‘invasion’ of neighbouring Ukraine sparking disquiet across the continent.

Margaret is International Vice President of the European Union of Women and was in Poland for a celebration of its 20 years membership of EUW – an organisation formed in 1953 to encourage women to play an active role in civic life; its members include professionals, MPs, MEPS, and councillors.

And she spoke in the Poland’s historic Parliament House to an audience including Poland’s Prime Minister Anna Kamorovska, Barbara Malinowska of EUW Poland, and 360 EUW delegates.

Margaret said she remembered the days when the country was barely a democracy and women played little part in public life.

“Now this beautiful hall in Parliament is full of MPs, MEPs, entrepreneurs, and mayors...all women. You have gained your positions by determination and solidarity as a group of women,” she said.

HEART Afterwards Margaret was presented with an ‘EUW heart’ made from Polish crystal and congratulated by the Poland’s Premier before being interviewed on radio.

Back in Spain, she told RTN she had en-

joyed visiting a historic city in a welcoming country “just a flight away”, and meeting Polish members of the organisation.

She said one strong impression was the large numbers of apples and orchards – fruit usually exported to Russia.

“There are apples everywhere and over 50% go to Russia but not now, the bottom has dropped out of the market,” said Margaret.

“But the Poles know that European solidarity over sanctions protects them and the Baltic nations from an unreliable predator, Russia.”

She said as Poland now had another woman Prime Minister and a former Premier, Donald Tusk was headed to BrusMargaret Hales with sels to become President of the European council, “I hope this beautiful country Polish Prime Minister helps to protect all of us in Europe from Anna further aggression.”

Eviction for hot calendar Mum EVA MARIA CASAS, a mother of three who posed for an erotic calendar to raise cash for her children’s school bus service in Montserrat, is to be evicted by the end of October after defaulting on her mortgage. She and her husband, who formerly had their own construction business, are to be evicted from their home owing 2,200€ in mortgage arrears over four months. In 2010 they were both unemployed but only the husband was entitled to 700€ in unemployment benefit as Eva Maria was employed autonomously. They subsequently could not meet their 1,040€ monthly mortgage payment and the family is to be moved into social housing accommodation where they will pay 150€ per month in rent. Eva Maria starred in June and November in the calendar.

I have been reborn says Teresa

by Jan Gamm NURSE TERESA Romero, now safely on the road to recovery after suffering with the Ebola virus, has spoken from her hospital bed, saying she feels “reborn” after her close brush with death.

However, Teresa’s husband, Javier Limon, has made a public statement strongly criticising the way his wife was treated by the health authorities since she contracted the disease.

He said: “Teresa was never responsible. She can only be accused of love for her profession

and for other people. She volunteered to help, putting her own life at risk.”

EMBARRASSMENT Limon is proving something of an embarrassment to Spain’s health bosses as he simply won’t go away, indicating that he is determined to take legal action against Spain’s health authorities, vehemently expounding his wife’s professionalism and slamming the lack of support she received from the Spanish government since she fell ill.

Javier “They treated us like scum,” said Limon, “They Limon did not respect Teresa in any way; they killed my dog and nearly killed my wife.” (The couple’s pet dog Excalibur was euthanized against their wishes).

44-year-old Teresa who has 15 years’ nursing experience, denies that she failed to observe safety procedures by allowing a contaminated glove to cross her face, a scenario put forward by the Health Department when she first became ill with Ebola.

The nurse spent around 50 minutes cleaning the private isolation room where 69-year-old Spanish priest Manuel Garcia Viejo died on 25th September at the Carlos III Hospital in Madrid. It is thought that this is when she picked up the infection.

Her husband’s reaction to comments made by Madrid’s regional health chief Javier Rodríguez that Nurse Romero had obviously made mistakes when removing her Hasmat suit, “…you don’t need a Master’s Degree to explain to someone how to put on a protective suit…but some people learn faster than others…” forced Rodríguez to a public apology but he stopped short of tendering his resignation as demanded by Limon.

IRRESPONSIBLE Teresa says she believes that the Madrid Health Minister Javier Rodríguez is “irresponsible,” especially concerning his arrogant remarks about the simplicity of donning and doffing security wear against hazardous materials. She is also calling for those responsible for the execution of her dog to be brought to account: “The animal was innocent,” she said, “Why was it necessary to kill him?”

Providing no further cases come to light by early December, Spain will be declared Ebola free.

Ondara’s shopping centre seeks Model for a Day!

by Patricia Thompson THE PORTAL de la Marina shopping centre in Ondara has launched this years’ casting for its ‘Model for a Day’ competition, offering local youths the opportunity to venture into the fashion world, becoming the cover of December’s issue of the centre’s magazine ‘Stylissimo’. The winner will also receive a 100€ bonus of cosmetics and a professional fotobook.

The face casting will take place on 15th November at the shopping centre. To register, participants must be over 13 years old and must upload a photograph to the Facebook page of CC Portal de la Marina be-

fore 11th November. Castings will then be chosen and they will enjoy a professional photo shoot with the help of makeup artists and stylists Druni and an experienced fashion photographer. A jury will select up to 40 such candidates and their photos will be announced on Facebook.

The food has been handed to the El Faro Spanish Baptist Church in Javea where it will be distributed to help those who are unable to find work after the end of the summer season in the resort and the overall economic downturn which has drastically hit many local families.

JIBC is a lively English speaking church with

many activities throughout the week and an international congregation of many denominations who worship together each Sunday.

Sunday Service is held at 10.30am at the Church Centre, Calle Favara 8, in Javea Old Town, just up from the Plaza de la Constitucon – the site of the town’s Thursday market and ‘The Place for Friendship Cafe’ is open each Thursday between 10.30am and 1pm on market days. AS A Company, especially at this time of the year we always suffer from very competitive prices on car and house Insurance. As my staff always point out, be careful, a cheaper price often means far lower overall cover and benefits. For instance we lost a valued client to another insurer as they were sixty euros less on price. However, it didn’t take long for it to work out more expensive due to a breakdown, where the grua (tow lorry) had to be called. Most other companies have limited mileage on the grua journey, unfortunately the company chosen by this client was one of these, and he received a large bill at the end of the journey. With Liberty this would never happen there are no mileage restrictions on the breakdown coverage and Europe is covered. And of course the Liberty House policy is the best you will find and this is recognised by other Insurers.

It is also that time of the year once again when health insurance cancellations take place. One of the main reasons for cancellations seems to be because people have reached retirement age and are now in possession of a sip card. This I can understand, the first thought is, oh good I can cancel my Private health insurance now. However bear in mind that especially in the Northern Costa Blanca waiting times can be horrendous. I know of someone, who is still waiting after one year to have his cough diagnosed.

With private health insurance you can have immedi-

ate tests and, an early diagnosis, which is vital. Why not consider taking a top up policy where you will be able to access your own Private GP, have tests, xrays etc and reach an early diagnosis.

I recently read an advertisement and also saw a copy of a letter from an Insurance agent , the advice given was to be very careful regarding the companies who offer “The Age you Join is the Age you Stay” as it is not at all what it claims to be . My response to this comment is that Asssa are one of the few Companies who genuinely do not increase your policy for any age related reason and who also “Guarantee you cover for Life” both of which are very clearly visible on all their brochures. If you cannot see it on the policy document then it is not legally available, never take the word of the sales person, they do have a vested interest in selling you their policy. Once you have joined Asssa there is no upper age limit. Similarly should you not be Guaranteed Cover for Life, it has been known that the policy has been cancelled due to excessive costs. This is a fact, and has happened.

A small percentage increase could be added to your premium if you have a large and continuing claim for example an ongoing cancer, but then this gives you the comfort of knowing that your treatment will be covered under their Guarantee for Life, and your policy will not be cancelled mid treatment.

The only other increase is an annual rate of medical

inflation, which next year with Asssa is only 3.6%.

Believe me, many other companies increase policies disguised as rate of inflation, when in fact it is either age or claims related.

I can assure you that we abide by Asssa’s sales policy which is total transparency at all times; I understand that a well known Health Insurance company has been sold to a large Spanish Company based in Asturias that apparently has no experience in the requirements and needs of the expatriates.

When you are informed of this via your renewal letter you may discover that the doctors you are familiar with are no longer be available exactly as happened two years ago with another well known company.

You may also have a higher increase in your renewal premium than is normal. If this should apply to you, and you are unhappy at being automatically transferred to another company, I have some good news for you, when the company changes and your doctors are not available to you, you are not bound by the legal cancellation period and can cancel at any time.

NEW FACES and old hands have been enjoying the sport in perfect conditions at the U3A Denia Petanque Group this month. The group meets on Tuesday mornings at 10am in the park adjacent to the Blau Beach and while the odd shower has hit, bad storms have been held at bay so far – although brollies were put up for a fun photo. All U3A members are welcome to join the group and take part in the challenge of the game.

LAST FRIDAY’s charity afternoon ‘Day of the Stars’ at The Plaza raised a fantastic 3,188€ to be split between the AECC, the National Spanish Cancer Charity and Pequeño Deseo, the Spanish equivalent of Make a Wish foundation. The event was organized by Gary, who runs the Giving4Giving charity shop, but said it would not have been possible without the help and support of many people. First and foremost, a special mention must go to Paco, owner of The Plaza Vincents and two hard working ladies, Helen and Lucy, who between them arranged the entire entertainment lineup. All the performers gave their time for free for this worthy cause whilst Sam and Michael had fun with the face paints and got to work on many of the visitors who attended.

Numerous local businesses donated a pile of raffle prizes for the event – all of which were won. Gary and the two beneficiaries would

Keira’s plight

by Irena Bodnarec ALMOST WEEKLY there is some charity fundraiser going on and all are worthy causes – in these economically difficult times unfortunately more and more charities are struggling. Every parent wants the best for their children but one lady, local ex-pat Deborah Alvarez Turner has to be the most inspirational mother you will ever come across. Unfortunately due to medical complications Keira was born with severe brain damage, cerebral palsy and epilepsy and has been having intensive therapy since she was 6 months old. The best and most beneficial treatment is HBOT (hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) and Intensive Therrasuit Therapy, which Keira has had in Florida – both centres are in the same building. However, this treatment is not funded by the authorities and it is only through tireless fundraising that Deborah is able to take her. Sadly this is the first year that Keira has not been to Florida for treatment mainly due to funding and so all the more important to ensure that she gets there next year. The sessions have already been booked, to start on 31st August 2015 and now the last push is needed to help get her there.

This is some feat for a lady to do – and goes to show her determination, stopping at nothing to ensure that her Princess gets what she so desperately needs. It will take place at Showboat – after the main show, so probably around midnight.

There are no intensive therapy places here in Spain that have HBOT chambers near them and the few that there are in Europe are shared.

Treatment is not cheap – a 3 week session will cost nearly $14,000 then there are the flights and living expenses for herself, Keira´s father Ramon and younger brother Rylee. They fortunately have the opportunity to use the Ronald McDonald charity house, so saving them a lot in comparison to staying in a hotel for the duration.

Benidorm Outlet fair

Benidorm is hosting its third outlet fair, located on the Plaza de SSMM Los Reyes de España – the square underneath the Town Hall in the Old Town. The 4 day fair started yesterday evening and is on until Sunday 2nd, opening from 11am till 9pm and until 3:30pm on Sunday. It is not like the usual Sunday market that you find in Benidorm or any other town in the province, but made up of local shopkeepers who are looking to sell off the ends of their summer stock. Around 40 local shops and businesses have joined together and are offering discounts of up to 75% - so a good opportunity for both retailer and the consumer to benefit. There is also a children´s entertainment area, with a bouncy castle and activities to keep them amused as well as some food stalls selling churros and the vintage Localolita van selling American style hotdogs.

More food was donated last Sunday than in any previous year in the church’s history

by Jack Troughton In previous years non-perishable food was packed into ‘hampers’ and sent to missionaries working in areas where British products were not easily available and to families in Javea Port at Christmas and Three kings.

And more food was donated to the Harvest Thanksgiving Service last Sunday than in any previous year in the

church’s 22-year history.

The sermon focussed on the two instructions that have replaced the three 613 laws of the Old Testament – love God, and love your neighbour. Pastor Clive Read indicated the bounty of the donated food was proof of the willingness of people in Javea to help their neighbours – even though they had never met or knew who they were.

ebration will be handed to the El Faro and Casa de Oracion Churches of Javea for distribution to the needy.

The Pastor told RTN: “The increased amount of donated items this year has a lot to do with people who visit the Oasis Help Centre in the street at the side of ‘La Caixa’ bank in the Port, and came back with shopping - even though we are unaware that they are church-goers. We are grateful to everyone who donated.”

CHAIRMAN OF Javea Players, Tony Cabban was happy to help stack shelves at the Caritas storeroom in Javea Port after delivering a cheque for 500€.

Tony lent a hand to Maria Jose de Quevedo, the director of the Javea Port branch of Caritas, at the Fishermen’s Church restocking the much-needed supplies.

Every member of the audience of the theatre group’s summer show ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’ donated 1€ from the price of their ticket to Caritas and its food bank.

The charity is helping support 35 families in the port and another 65 in the Old Town who have been hit by the recession, making the timely donation very welcome.

Donations of dried and tinned food to keep the shelves full are much appreciated by Caritas and those it helps.

Charity volunteers are at the Fishermen’s Church every Monday evening from 6pm until 7.30pm.

Olive time!

THE SECOND half of October to mid-December is the traditional time for picking olives for pickling, eating or making olive oil, the exact time depending on your location, the weather during the previous six months and the strength of oil you wish to extract.

THIS YEAR, olives need to be picked sooner as they have ripened early due to the drought and although recent rain has resulted in swelling and bigger olives, the short stems connecting each olive to the branches of the tree are rotting causing the fruit to fall at a touch.

To process olives at an oil mill 200 kilos is normally the minimum required, although some small antique stone grinding mills will accept down to 100 kilos. Small mills can separate your olives and produced oil from that of other people’s; others mix them and you obtain a blend of oil, and the average yield.

The weight of olives required to produce a litre of oil varies from around 7 kilos for early small green olives and late pickings of high water content olives if it has rained: the norm is 5.5 to 6.5 kilos a litre. Naturally you can deliver your olives to a mill together with those of a neighbour or friend to achieve the minimum weight required.

For the best oil and eating olives they will be picked by hand and processed the same day. Lesser quality will be obtained by raking, shaking olives onto nets or letting them fall naturally over a few weeks when bruising and rotting can set in.

If you intend to pickle your olives for eating they first need soaking in water to soak out the bitter tastes of a raw olive.

This can be achieved in three ways: The regular slow way – just put the raw olives in

containers of water and change the water every two or three days for six weeks.

Speeded up – slit each olives down one or two sides so that water can leach out the bitter natural tastes speedier , then follow the water process for four weeks.

Fast – Bash each olive with a wooden mallet so that it is squashed and splits, then follow the water process for two to three weeks.

There is also a process that avoids the long soaking in water that uses a weak caustic soda solution. This saves time as in many factories but for many people produces a bland processed taste compared to home produced olives. Since starting to process our own olives I have not eaten tinned olives and in bars ask for olives caseras - home produced olives.

Now the olives need to be pickled with salt. This is normally in brine, but raw salt can be used as in Aragon for their special black wrinkled olives.

To prepare a good brine fill a bowl or saucepan half full with water and add a few tablespoons of salt. Stir until dissolved and place a washed fresh egg in the solution. When it floats with the top near the surface your brine is ready. Add the salt tablespoon by tablespoon until this occurs.

A few days before, collect some twigs of thyme from the

garden or local hillside, harvesting the round leaf pebrella variety if growing in your locality. Then either place all the olives in a big olive barrel or bottle by layering olives and twigs of thyme leaves. Then fill the bottles with brine ensuring that no olives rise above the surface. Before closing the bottles place three or four carob leaves on the surface of the water. This helps reduce the chance of olives putrefying.

Finally seal the jars with metal lids or plastic and rubber bands. If using a big barrel cover with a heavy damp cloth.

Then store in a cool dark place.

Regarding life insurance policies, if the insurer delays in the fulfillment of the payment, by not complying with its obligation within three months of the loss taking place, then interest should also be paid.

Unless the contract or insurance policy specifically contains a more beneficial compensation for the insured, then the level of interests to be paid would be as follows: Compensation for delay shall consist in the payment of an interest equal to the legal interest rate in force

By Jack Troughton MABS BENIDORM is staging its second annual fashion show on Saturday 22nd November – and two courageous male models are ready to strut their stuff.

The clothes are an autumn and winter collection and include casual wear, elegant evening wear and the extra special party outfits for Christmas dinner dances, balls, or perhaps

something for a winter cruise.

There will also be a large selection of designer handbags and accessories to compliment the clothes – and the organisers hope people will take the opportunity to browse the ‘brand new’ designer outfits on the rails of The Little Boutique, which is open for business throughout the year.

Brenda Bates and her husband spent 22 years working in Kenya and for a time were wardens at the centre – named after Elsa the lion. Brenda will share what she learned of the Adamson’s, in particularly Joy – described as a talented, brave and eccentric woman.

Send in the clowns ANOTHER HALLOWEE’N comes tonight. It isn’t the strongest night of the witches - that’s on my birthday at Walpurgis Night in April.

Hallowe’en is the night that World Witches can travel, connect and reveal themselves. It has also become a multi-million dollar industry, thanks to the intervention and promotion of the USA. Hallowe’en has come such a long way from its humble beginnings.

The turnip lanterns of the Highlands of Scotland, with their burning candles, were placed at regular interval along the beaches of the Highlands and Islands to ward off the scavenging and terrifying Scandinavian Witches. This custom of warding off spread to the North of England, and particularly to the Isle of Man where the Fairy Kingdom is still much revered and Witchcraft is the black enemy to be abated. Once these customs hit England in general the turnip lantern finally gave way to the pumpkin, and from then onwards the USA had a hand in promoting this most Autumnal annual event.

The Trick or Treat concept of children dressed up and going door to door came to a height in the 1970s. However, a few razor blades found in apples and poisoned candy added to the safety aspect of juveniles traipsing in darkness through the streets waiting for a trick or treat, meaning that now trick or treat parades rarely take place.

Here in my village the children have no concept of what is a trick, though they know what a treat is and they demand it.

Several neighbours endured eggs being thrown at them last year, and so won’t be stocking up with sweet treats to hand out at the door this year. You can spoil something, and if you do it can never be quite the same again.

This year I was amused to hear of a covert group of sad clowns lurking in the streets at night. These clowns say nothing and do nothing, but their mere presence has brought fear and trepidation amongst the Californian residents they are intimidating. How can you legislate against a clown just because they are made up and in costume?

Personally I have always had a bad feeling around clowns. I once did a Feng Shui consultation in a house where each and every room had a framed picture of a sad clown with a tear in the eye.

This was not a happy home, needless to say, and the clowns left very promptly on my explicit instruction making a huge difference as they did so. Quite how these Californian clowns will be celebrating Hallowe’en I do not know, but then the fear is, I guess, what is behind the make up and the outfit? What could happen?

In Spain November 1st is the Day of the Dead, just as the Hallowe’en we celebrate is the night before this, the evening before All Hallows. This is a time to honour those who have passed over. Often it can mean setting a place for the departed for dinner, or visiting the graves of those who have passed over to pay respect and to lay flowers as a tribute to their life here on Earth.

With a plethora of scary movies on TV and the odd werewolf costume on the shelf at Carrefour, the great season of Autumn kicks off again.

The glare of the Summer has finally gone and we have temperate sunny days ahead to be thankful for. Just check under your bed for any clowns that may be lurking and keep a candle burning to show those Witches that frankly you do give a damn!

This is the hardest question, and it is one I am frequently asked so that I spill the beans about some of the wonderful people that I have met through Spirit. My Father once said very wickedly that the best clients are the ones who pay their bills, but joking apart, I treat all my clients with the same utter respect that they deserve.

I was very moved by Joyce Grenfell, who fooled us into believing that she was the quintessential English gentlewoman, and was in fact 75% American. I saw her just months before her death, and she told me that she had lost all sense of time, and cared only for “…this minute.“ “…and,” she said, “I am in it…thank The Lord.”

This beautiful yet simple sentiment from such an inspiring, talented and spiritual woman, makes her someone I shall never, ever, forget!

By Jack Troughton SALE ASSISTANTS from Shalford’s Drapery Emporium and Fancy Goods Bazaar have been on their travels in order to get the best picture – possibly for the ‘Half a Sixpence’ family album.

The workers in Footlights Theatre Group’s production of the hit musical get to sing the opening chorus of the show as they beaver away, launching into ‘Heigh-ho, a normal working day’.

The photo of this commercial activity was taken in Calpe by Debra Miller in Calpe and then bounced across to the

UK and Ben McHugh in Wakefield to ‘photo shop’ the image and make it a genuine old curiosity shop.

Half a Sixpence tells the changing fortunes of shop apprentice Arthur Kipps. He inherits a fortune, loses it but finds true happiness in the end with his childhood sweetheart.

Tickets are on sale for the footlights production of this very British musical.

The show is being staged at the Casa de Cultura, Calpe, on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th November, priced at 12€ and 8€ for children from the Box Office

A PACKED house welcomed the launch of poetry collection ‘Red Rock Dreaming’ on Friday, the work of 14 poets of the Stanza Alacant Poetry Workshop.

The well-attended event at Seu Universitaria de la Marina in Benissa marked seven years of “enriching” activity by workshop members. Stanza Alacant was the first Spanish Stanza of The Poetry Society.

The hardback anthology contains 52 poems all influenced by the area’s landscape and people, and readings were made in both English and Spanish – backlit with projections of the work of local artists.

And the readings were followed by a book-signing and a reception, where guests were able to also sample the culinary talents of the assembled workshop members.

Red Rock Dreaming was on sale at 12€ and many were snapped up as a unique Christmas present for relatives and friends, enabling the word about the romance to be found in this special part of Spain to be spread even further.

RAPHAEL RAVENSCROFT, the man who played that truly wonderful saxophone solo that sweeps gloriously in and out of ‘Baker Street’ has recently passed away, and I think it’s fantastic that he is now to be remembered as the man who made that most evocative of sounds on his saxophone. Interestingly he was paid just £27.50 on the day, but by taking a percentage he earned around £80,000 a year in royalties. R.I.P. Raphael Ravenscroft…

BILLY JOEL released his first solo album ‘Piano Man’ in 1973.

In a very hard hitting interview he gave to newspaper The New Yorker he revealed that he won’t ever be going back into the recording studio. “I’ve had my say,” he said, “if I put out an album now, it would probably sell pretty well, because of who I am, but that’s no reason to do it, -I’d want it to be good.” … Get your drift Billy.

Following the thread of not wanting to write and record any more songs he said about the time he was married to supermodel Christie Brinkley “I’m not willing to have the public pick apart any new material for clues about my personal life, as they did during my nine-year marriage to Christie. I went through the celebrity craziness and the divorce, and felt like there was a proctoscope up my butt ... everybody interrogating, analysing … told you it was hard hitting didn’t I. All of that said, 65-year-old Billy continues to tour and although he had a lot of strong stuff to say about his ex-wife, it was not about her personally. This was most certainly borne out when he played Madison Square Garden recently. 60-year-old Christie was in the audience and he dedicated ‘Uptown Girl’ to her, and the former supermodel responded by adding to the interview: “I’ve always adored him, I just couldn’t live with him anymore, but don’t cross your fingers for a reconciliation.”

Joel has been married three times with his last marriage to celebrity chef Katie Lee ending in 2009. The man who was born in the Bronx then admitted to his local newspaper “I´m in no rush to be married again.”

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Just a few little words Just for fun!

I have been asked many times to teach people the “little words” in Spanish.

However, tackling “little words” as a subject in itself this is much easier said than done for several reasons. Firstly, many “little words” have multiple meanings depending on the context which means that secondly, it is not possible to find a single translation for them out of context and thirdly, even if we do manage to explain and translate them, they rarely stick in our minds – you’ve guessed it – unless we learn them in a context.

Having said all of that, I now propose to write a summary of just one group of little words, namely single-word “prepositions”, and give at least some examples in context to give us a basic idea of each one. I will leave the translations up to you - I have tried to keep them simple.

Let’s start with one of the most common words in the language, that single letter “a”. This has multiple meanings which include ideas related to place, time, manner, distance and price etc. Here are a few examples: Mañana iré a Zaragoza. Tengo mi clase a las seis y media. Lo hago a mi manera. Está a cien metros. Los vendo a cinco euros cada uno. Equally, if not more, common is the preposition “de”. This can refer to possession, origin, material amongst other things – el coche de Juan; Nuria es de Alicante; las sábanas son de algodón.

Another two-letter preposition is “en”.

Again this is mainly, but not exclusively, used to refer to place and time. Here are two examples: Mi marido está en casa; lo leí en dos minutos.

Then we have a pair of opposites: “con” and “sin” – with and without. “con” refers to company, instrument and manner. If you have no idea what that means, here are the examples: Trabajo con Pedro; corto la tarta con un cuchillo; me lo dijo con mucha alegría.

“Sin” on the other hand merely refers to “lack” – una camiseta sin mangas; un rebelde sin causa.

Two words that are sometimes confused, although they are fundamentally different are “hasta” and “hacia”. “Hasta” refers to a specific limit of space, time and quantity, for example: Caminé hasta el centro del pueblo; hasta ahora no le he visto, tengo hasta diez camisas distintas. Hasta is often used with “desde” as in: París hasta Dakar, desde mañana hasta el viernes que viene.

“Hacia” however means a little more vaguely “towards, or “in the direction of” so “caminé hacia el centro del pueblo”, means that I walked in that direction, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that I actually arrived.

A word already referred to is “desde” usually translated as “since” or “from”.

It can refer to both time and place, as in “desde Alicante hasta Madrid” or “desde las 7 hasta las 9 de la tarde”. A word

which refers only to concepts of time is “durante”. This is directly connected to the idea of “duration”. “He estado enferma durante toda la semana”.

“Entre” is a word that we usually translate as “between” in terms of either time or place, but we shouldn’t forget can also mean “among” or “amongst”.

Albacete está entre Alicante y Madrid; estás entre amigos.

Another tricky pair of prepositions is “por” and “para”. I have actually produced a video tutorial on my website www.janecronin.eu about the use of these two words. However, here are some brief indicators. Both have multiple meanings with “para” expressing objectives, destination, direction and use, for example: Voy a Murcia para comprar un sofá; el cuchillo es para cortar, el tren va para Barcelona, el regalo es para mi madre. “Por” expresses duration, cause or motive, price, exchange and means. Here is a simple example of each one: Estuve en Londres por dos semanas; llegué tarde por el tráfico (because of); lo compré por diez euros; contéstame por email.

There are quite a few more of these prepositions, but we’ll look at just one more – “sobre”. Just like all the others, sobre can mean a number of things, though as a preposition mainly “about”, “around”, “on” or “over”. Nos vemos sobre las dos (about two o’clock).

Estamos hablando sobre el problema.

Varicose veins

VARICOSE VEINS, also known as peripheral vascular disease, are dilated veins that for various reasons do not do their job of carrying blood back to the heart efficiently. Therefore blood pools in them, expanding and becoming tortuous.

The frequency of occurrence depends on many factors, but considering only those that result in clinical manifestations it can be seen that between 10% and 15% of the population suffers from them, this percentage increasing with age and sex - more women are affected than men.

Veins are the vessels that carry blood back to the heart once you have irrigated all tissues giving them oxygen and nutrients: this is called ‘venous return’.

Keep in mind that, given the upright position of the human being, the blood from the legs must rise against the force of gravity, requiring added effort.

To facilitate this, the veins have valves inside that prevent blood from flowing back, and also have the cooperation of the leg muscles that contract to help push blood, establishing a single direction toward the heart. When these valves for some reason cannot fulfil their mission to prevent backflow, blood accumulates, increasing the pressure by dilating the veins and extending and altering their wall.

RISK FACTORS PREDISPOSING TO VARICOSE VEINS: The standing position: this position increases venous pressure column and hinders the rise of blood to the heart.

Heredity: People with a family history of varicose veins are twice as likely to suffer.

The constitutional predisposition: a generalised connective tissue weakness implies a loss of tone in the walls of the veins, which facilitates the appearance of varicose veins.

Age: age increases the risk of allergies.

Sex: women suffer more often than men, which seems to be related to hormonal factors.

Obesity: it has been found that obese people are twice as likely to have

varicose veins. Being overweight increases the risk by increasing the amount of blood supply to the legs that should be evacuated through the veins.

Constipation: difficulty to defecate requires greater effort to expel the stool. These efforts increase pressure inside the abdomen, also increasing in the abdominal veins, hindering the outflow of blood from the legs and therefore increasing the risk of varicose veins.

Contraceptives: cause fluid retention and, therefore increase blood volume.

Pregnancy: varicose veins most often appear during pregnancy due to several factors, especially through hormonal changes, the pressure of the uterus on the great vessels, and weight gain.

Lack of exercise: lack of activity of the leg muscles causes them to fail in pushing blood to the heart.

Type of work: work that requires excessive time standing results in an overload on the veins.

‘WEAR IT Pink Day’ at Xabia International College proved a huge success with students and raised 265€ for the MABS Cancer Support Group.

Staged as part of breast cancer awareness month, cash was donated by everyone who brightened up the school by donning something pink, the sale of cakes and lunchtime pizza.

Authentic Indian Cuisine at The Curry Mile IF YOU want to taste authentic Indian cuisine while in Benidorm then head to “The Curry Mile” situated on the outskirts of Benidorm, in the Rincon De Loix opposite Camping El Raco. It has firmly established itself as a popular venue in the area.

The restaurant originally opened it’s doors 3 years ago a few doors up in Avenida Severo Ochoa seating 30 diners. Because of the success new premises were needed. With regulars from the surrounding campsites, urbanisations and towns and the great parking, staying in the area was essential.

Here in Spain he managed several very successful restaurants in Almeria and Murcia before heading to Benidorm. Surinder, Ronny’s talented chef has been with him since day one.

He chose the name “Curry Mile” after the nickname given to an area of Manchester where there are over 70 establishments specialising in Indian Cuisine.

The new Restaurant itself is bright and spacious with a great atmosphere created by Ronny and his team of friendly attentive staff.

The classy decor is fresh and in-keeping with an Indian theme with a modern twist. Large tables, with lots of legroom make it comfortable to dine and also accessible for disabled customers.

The menu can be described as very extensive offering a full range of options. The usual favourites are there including vegetarian dishes and house specialities such as Lamb Saag. All are superbly presented. As everything is cooked to order “The Curry Mile” is able to cater to individual tastes and dietary requirements wherever possible.

The menu is excellent value for money but this doesn’t mean there is any compromise on quality. As well as the A La Carte menu there are 2 set menus served daily until 9pm. 2 courses 9.95€, 3 courses 14.50€, both include in the price a half bottle of wine, small beer or soft drink. Another choice of main dish can be substituted for 1€.

food Stir Fried Chicken with Roasted carrot and Pineapple and Peppers pumpkin soup This recipe brings together an exotic mixture of meat, fruit and vegetables with a tangy sauce. If you prepare everything in advance, it will take about as long to cook as it takes to boil a pan of rice.

• 2-3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips • A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped (or 2 tsps of jarred minced ginger) • 2 tbls soy sauce • Half a fresh pineapple, sliced, peeled and cut into chunks • 1 mediun red pepper, de-seeded and cut into chunks • 1 medium green pepper, de-seeded and cut into chunks • 1 large onion, peeled and thinly sliced • Vegetable oil for frying For the sauce • 4 tbls tomato ketchup • 1 tbls honey • 2 tbls soy sauce • 1tsp wine vinegar • 1 tsp ready made mustard • A little water 1.Combine the sliced chicken with the soy sauce and chopped ginger and set aside to marinate.

2. Combine all the ingredients for the sauce and set aside.

3. When ready to cook, add a little oil to a wok and stir-fry the chicken with the marinade over high heat until cooked (about 4-5 minutes). Remove the chicken and set aside.

4. Add a little more oil to the wok and , still with the heat on high, stir-fry the peppers and onion until cooked, but crisp (5-6 minutes). Add the pineapple chunks and continue to cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Return the chicken to the wok, pour in the sauce and stir. Heat until the sauce is bubbling. Serve immediately with plain boiled rice.

Serves 4, Preparation time: 15 minutes, Cooking time: 15 minutes

The future’s bright, the future’s orange. You can tell it’s autumn when the pumpkins arrive in the markets. This cheerful, warming soup is so bright that you’ll need to wear your sunglasses when you eat it! I roasted all the ingredients first, which really intensifies their flavour and gives the soup a natural sweetness.

• 500g fresh pumpkin • 300g medium carrots • A medium onion • Olive oil • Salt and black pepper • 300ml hot chicken or vegetable stock • Thick cream (optional) • Shredded orange peel (optional) 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees C. 2. Cut the pumpkin into 2.5cm wedges, removing the seeds but leaving the skin in tact. Peel the carrots and cut in half lengthways. Peel the onion and cut into wedges. Place the vegetables in a medium sized roasting tin and drizzle with a good slug of olive oil. Get your hands in and swirl everything around so all the vegetables have an even coating of oil. Adjust the pumpkin wedges so that only the skin is in contact with the bottom

of the pan. Season generously with salt and pepper then place in the oven for 35 – 45 minutes until the vegetables are soft and begin to blacken at the edges.

3. Remove the vegetables from the oven and, when the pumpkin wedges are cool enough to handle, peel away the skin and discard. Next you need to liquidize everything using a food processor or a hand held blender. To do this, place all the roasted ingredients together with the hot stock and whiz until smooth. Add a little more stock if the soup seems too thick and pass through a fine sieve if you want a smoother texture 4. Pour the soup into a pan and reheat when ready to serve. Finish the soup with a blob of thick cream and a few shreds of orange rind.

Serves 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes

Every time that I try to log on, I get this message: “the user profile service failed the log on. User profile cannot be loaded OK.” Can you help me, or put me in touch with someone who could help me in the Denia area? John.

Aunty says: The problem is that the user profile being logged on to is corrupted.

So that profile cannot be opened. There are options you can follow to repair or even create a new / duplicate profile.

But they are complicated, and involve going into the registry of Windows.

HELLO AUNTY: As you always seem to be able to answer my computer problems for me I hope you might answer this one: for no reason just recently when I talk to my friends on Skype they can’t see me but I can see them - it is the same on both my main PC and tablet . I have updated the latest version of Skype. Thanks – Margaret.

Aunty says: It seems strange the same thing is happening on both a PC and tablet - two completely different pieces of equipment.

The only things that I can think of that would cause this to happen on two different pieces of equipment is that you have turned off the camera option, and so you are not sending video to them.

Now if it was happening on one piece of equipment only, then there are various checks you could do, like check the camera works in other applications, uninstall and reinstall Skype, perhaps reinstall the camera drivers (on the PC).

Sponsored emails HELLO AUNTY: Could you tell me if there is any way I can stop the sponsored email I keep receiving? They appear in my inbox and I cannot delete them. The emails have a dollar sign in the right hand column with a circle of dashes around the dollar, I never open these emails - they disappear on their own and are sometimes displayed for days.

The latest one is advertising KeraFiber: men with hair loss are obsessed with this product.

Hope you can help me. Regards, John Aunty says: Sponsored emails are probably being sent by Yahoo, another way of them making money. Every few days new sponsored emails appear. Many people have complained about them, but as far as I know there is not a way to delete them or get rid of them.

New ransomware

HI AUNTY: In your column it may be worth mentioning the new ransomware called CryptoWall, a nasty ransomware which once in a computer, encrypts files and then demands a ransom for these files to be decrypted and to permit access to encrypted folders, not just files. It is claimed that in one year a ransom total of 1million USD has been gained by these CryptoWall crooks. Crooks, but clever.

Many machines are infected without owners being aware until they get the screen message ‘unable to load the file’.

This recently happened to us (we think we know the source in Spain) and we had some 3GB of images and files encrypted whilst we were backing up. We will not pay the ransom of US$500 demanded

by CryptoWall and have lost a lot of irreplaceable pictures and legal documents.

Microsoft were wonderful and cleaned the machine remotely from America, but it took them some 48 hours to do it as the ransomware just kept multiplying.

Eventually they had to strip the machine, install HitmanPro anti malware and re-install Vista to factory settings. I am indebted to Microsoft for it. They admit that this is a clever virus type infection.

A lesson learned. Back up frequently, retain only necessary files on the computer, install a good antivirus and antimalware program and do not open emails from unknown sources. Roger Aunty says: Good advice, Thanks!

Charity begins at hole one!

WITH MANY thanks to so many generous golfers.

By Tony Miles IT IS a well known fact that whilst being frequently berated for wearing silly trousers and having had a reputation for being chauvinistic, the average golfer is very happy to direct his energies to raising money for charity.

Most weeks the Campbell Lamont team are involved in some way in fund raising at one of their events and the sums are amazing.

There can be very few charities in Spain that have not benefitted from the generous efforts of the local golfer.

One of the most active organisations is Grant a Wish and they are tireless in their efforts to support local good causes and for many of the golfers who make donations, it is rewarding to know that these funds stay in the area and help such people as EMAUS where more than one hundred children and adults from abusive homes are looked after in safety. Because of the nature of the threat to these people their identity and location are treated with maximum confidentiality. For this reason they have a low profile when it comes to fund raising and so the efforts of the various golf societies and Grant a Wish are doubly important. On that subject we must also mention Tony Grande and his team from the Calpe Bed Centre whose efforts provide valuable daily support for all the EMAUS residencies. Their last golf day raised more than €7000 Tune into BAY RADIO each Saturday for Focus on Golf with Tony and Campbell.

Bay Radio is the leading English language radio station in Spain and the largest audience for English Radio outside the UK.

There are a number of amazing statistics on this subject and each Society is known for their own fund raising methods but one which deserves special mention is Marina Alta. They have a record of fund raising since their inception just seven years ago and over the last few years they have donated €20,000 to EMAUS, MABS and other cancer charities.

Campbell lends his support to countless events where significant sums are raised and over the last few years his own Golf Days have been directed at supporting three local organisations.

Help of Denia Grant a wish Cancer Care Javea His team have been involved in running competitions for these charities and have helped to raise well over €20.000 in the last 3 years.

More recently Grant a Wish received €600 from a Texas Scramble organised by CL Golf at Oliva Nova and earlier this year Help of Denia received over 4500 euro.

Ramon of Grant a Wish adds - “I would say that maybe circa 20 percent of all funds raised on the Costa Blanca for charity comes via our fantastic friends on the various golf courses. That is a significant

sum and can make a major difference to so many lives.”

With that level of support it is not difficult to imagine that many charitable organisations would struggle if it were not for the local golfers. And the good news is that every single one of them gives their time and cash willingly especially when it is

wrapped up in a fun day’s golf.

In a later edition I would like to provide a more detailed presentation of the efforts of ALL the local golfers and the incredible fund raising organisations but at this stage would you all kindly accept the grateful thanks of the recipients and know that your efforts are highly appreciated.

Nissan Juke EYE-CATCHING design at an attractive price - that’s the combination on offer from Nissan with its Juke, the increasingly fashionable compact sports utility vehicle.

THERE’S NO denying it, it’s a great design (as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz) that from a distance looks like a three-door but thanks to cleverly concealed rear door handles it is actually a five door. It represents extremely good value for money, too.

It seems to appeal to all generations, too, from the young girl who cycles past and tells her dad how she likes it through to the middle aged man who simply stands and stares. And the gentleman of senior years I spot driving his in Weymouth… Arguably the brown finish of the test vehicle lends itself to the design and my wife and I feel that cream leather upholstery would complement this particularly well. As it is the black cloth seats are comfortable even over a fairly long journey that we take from Hampshire to Dorset.

The raised ride height is always a welcome bonus for me because it gives greater command of the road. It also allows the driver to spot parking spaces that others do not in packed car parks. I find the 1.5 diesel unit pleasantly poky

at speeds under 60mph with third gear being very receptive between 30mph and 60mph. Over that speed and it proves slower than expected and at times struggles to hold its own while in the outside lane of the motorway.

Hills slow it up a bit requiring a change down to fourth gear but it is only a 1.5 litre and a diesel and so overall it does a good job and with hard driving will return over 40mpg. The best recorded was around 47mpg. Perhaps surprisingly the Juke holds the road and feels like it’s on rails when cornering, meaning that it can be driven with gusto even round bends. Rather than simply being an attractive head-turner it is also pleasingly a ‘driver’s car’, helped by the fairly hard suspension.

The n-tec model tested also comes fitted with cruise control which is useful for motorway cruising. Bear in mind that the test takes place just after the UK has been badly

battered by storms and the Juke copes with the floods admirably. Just down the road from my parents in law there is an enormous flood that has previously shut the road but the Juke makes light work of it. Reversing the Juke is made easier by the camera display on the dashboard.

Business Development Executive As a business development executive, you will be responsible for generating new business relationships with affiliates/partners (e.g. property developers, IFAs, wealth managers and international relocation companies) that regularly refer new private individuals to register with HiFX. This is a full sales lifecycle role where you will identify and source new business opportunities, meet and present HiFX’s solutions, manage existing affiliate relationships ongoing and also assist the Calpe branch team with private client support and external visits.

We are keen to receive applications from candidates with demonstrable high working values and sales experience (within b2b or b2c) and with a proven ability to source and identify new affiliate/partner business through their own initiatives.

Previous experience of selling financial services and/or online products and services would be advantageous.
