A NEW soup kitchen for children, ‘Cooking Smiles’ or ‘Cocinamos sonrisas’ opened on August 1st. It will operate from Monday to Friday and can serve up to 60 children aged 3 to 12 years. The presidents of the CC.PP. Ampas Habanera and Amanecer, Pilar Rodriguez and Patricia Muñoz, accompanied by the councillors of Social Affairs and Education Tomás Ballester and Rosario Martínez, announced on Wednesday that the service will remain in the service of the most needy children, until August 30th. The dining room serves meals from Monday to Friday from 12.00 noon to 3.00pm.

The menus have been developed by the same company that serves students during the school year in the CP. Habanera. The company ‘Serunión’ estimated the cost of each place setting at 1.95 euros, although it may be modified downward as the month progresses. Applications for children who sign up is limited to a maximum of sixty places and are being monitored by the services of the Department of Social Welfare, in order to ensure that the children on the program reach the minimum requirements to enjoy this service. A bus service has been set up through the transport company ‘La Inmaculada’, which gives its buses and volunteer instructors to cover the transfer points.
Children on the scheme are dropped off in CP Habanera, which is hosting the project ‘Cooking Smiles’ at noon and enter the dinning area at 1.30pm. Children also enjoy other diversions during the workshops with activities such as theatre, storytelling, basic English basic, physical education and fun choreography, that will be very useful for the closing dinner party to be held on the 30th. The project has an outstanding volunteer force and the program has the full support of the council. The summer workshop offers other diversions too in collaboration with other institutions, such as the RCNT, who are offering an introductory course in sailing and Dance School Paya’s dance instructor that children visit once a week.
