Rent to buy’s ugly side RENT TO buy has been a popular option put forward by real estate agents throughout the world, to help prospective buyers who in this time of financial crisis have difficulty finding a mortgage lender.

by Keith Nicol Likewise sellers would rather have their mortgage payments covered by rent on a property that they no longer wish to own.

It’s not a perfect situation but it offers a semi-satisfaction level for all three parties involved: the seller who does not default on bank payment; the renter who has a property to live in; the real estate agent who is making a commission on the rental deal.

However, allegations have been made that in at least one instance, the rent is gong directly to the agent and not to the seller, as the seller is oblivious to the fact that their property is being lived in.

In the majority of cases the seller has sold up and left Spain, leaving power of attorney for any possible sale in the hands of their Real Estate agent. However, an uglier side to this practice has now reared its head

and one Quesada based agency in particular is being accused of renting out houses on their books without the knowledge of the sellers and pocketing the entire rental income.

This scam has been performed before along the coast, but usually the agency has shut shop overnight and disappeared. In this case, the agency in question, who cannot be named at this time, has a high profile and advertises both locally on the Costa Blanca and in magazines further south.

Thus, while investigations continue, if you have placed your property in the hands of an agency operating out of Quesada, have proof or evidence that they have rented your property without your express knowledge and you have a contract allowing them to do so, or you are renting a property that is for sale and are subjected to allowing prospective clients to view, please let RTN`s Keith Nicol know by emailing: keith@roundtownnews.com

Arsonist ignites two fires in Javea

THE FIRE service has advised that fires have been ignited in the Tossal and Gros Tarraula area for the last three summers, leading to the conclusion that the fires are the work of the same arsonist.

by Jan Gamm Each time the fires occur at night. On Wednesday a fire started at 10.30pm, again in Tarraula. And as usual the fire is lit in two separate places, this time 50 yards apart.

Three fire crews from Denia, a volunteer crew and the Civil Defence finally put out the flames at 1am, by which time an acre of

important pine forest had been destroyed.

Luckily there was no wind on Wednesday otherwise the damaged area would have been considerably larger. Nobody was injured. Municipal workers are now cutting a forest road through the forest to facilitate easier access in the event of further fires.

Residents are asked to be vigilant and to report any suspicious individuals.

Rajoy hacked off after summer hols

MARIANO RAJOY returns to work this week after his summer holiday to find anonymous hacks have attacked the Partido Popular websites with claims that it can be proved that the PP has been involved in drug trafficking and also bribing customs officials and judges.

Anonymous messages, part of ‘Secret Files Part II’, are posted on the PP websites and also on YouTube, promising to provide documentation which will prove the allegations.

Facebook gives Spanish Government user info

By Jan Gamm DETAILED INFORMATION on 479 Facebook users, including IP addresses, has been handed over to the Spanish government by the social network in the first half of this year according to a Facebook report published last week that confirmed data

had been requested on 715 individuals.

Facebook executives confirmed that the majority of the information requested related to serious crime cases such as robbery or abduction. Facebook has provided information to various governments including the US and the UK.

El Ateneo Repúblicano pay tribute to the victims of the 1938 bombing of Torrevieja

by Keith Nicol SEVERAL HUNDRED people gathered on Sunday 25th August around the monument to Man of the Sea, on the Paseo Maritimo Juan Aparicio, to attend the event organized by the Ateneo Republican “Miguel Hernández” of Torrevieja and Salinas Golf,. The gathering marked the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Torrevieja, with the loss of 19 lives in 1938, by the Italian airforce, as part of an agreement between the Nazi regime and the civil war created by Franco. The solemn event began around 7.30pm with a speech by President Lucía Bachiller, who told the story about the bombing. Then Aurora Bernal, read poems followed by members of local political opposition parties.

Unfortunately, instead of this being a pure remembrance service for the victims and their families, the ugly side of politics raised its head and criticism, be it valid or not, came to the forefront as it was mentioned several times that the first deputy mayor of the town hall, Joaquín Albaladejo, apparently last year promised to put a plaque on Concordia Street, in tribute to the victims of the bombing, which never materialized!

Regarding the announcement of the mayor, Eduardo Dolon, during the book launch this week about the bombing of the city, where he said that the city planned to erect a monolith in the Port, in memory of all the victims of war, as this is the place where the

bombing began, speakers ridiculed this announcement, saying that this monument had no direct context to the 1938 bombing and might as well serve as a homage to those killed in the wars of the Romans with their emperor Julius Caesar, to the Mongols, or even Agustina de Aragon.

The poet and actor Calleja de la Hoguera, recited a long poem reminiscent of Hernandiana, gesticulating and trying to relive every episode recounted about the bombing. The act was apparently far to long for many of the attendees who left early before the evening concluded with the screening of a video in tribute to the victims of the bombing, the lighting of flares, with a respectful moment of silence and then the traditional throwing of flowers into the sea in memory of the 19 innocent victims of Nazi aviation bombing on that fateful Thursday in August 1938.

Association of University Students meet on Monday ROSARIO MARTINEZ Chazarra, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Education and Youth announced that on Monday 2nd September at 8:00 pm, at the Centre for Information and Youth Torrevieja (CIAJ) a briefing will be held for University students. The meeting is offered by the Asociación de Estudiantes Universitarios de Guardamar y Torrevieja (ADEUGT) which is seen as the most important information source regarding bus serviced to local universities, including timetables, fares, bus loading preference for partners, car sharing and links plus the possible implementation of a daily shuttle linking Torrevieja-Guardamar and the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche, for students from these two localities studying in this university.

Hotel occupancy on the Costa exceeded 85 %

VISITOR FIGURES to the Orihuela Costa have shown an improvement in 2013 as Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martinez, noted that the recorded hotel occupancy on the Orihuela Costa over the months of July and August was about 85%. According to information gathered by the Tourism Department, Hotel occupation was nearly 85% overall, while hotel La Zenia, who account for 45% of available hotel beds on the Orihuela Costa, averaged 86 % in July and August.

In terms of tourist apartments, in July they showed a 75% occupancy rising in August to an average occupancy of 88 % , although the Marina Playa Apartments reached 90% and Playa Flamenca 95 % this month, to date.

handled more than 5,000 consultations during July and August. 60 % of these were enquiries from Spanish tourists, primarily Valencia, Madrid , Murcia and Catalonia , and the rest international visitors, 50% of them British and the rest mainly French, Belgian and German. However on the coast, the trend is practically reversed with 68% of the enquiries made by foreign nationals.

In regard to Orihuela’s promoted tourism routes in Orihuela City. During the month of August, the most popular choices were for theatrical and cultural visits. These tourist routes continue through September, although Martinez announced that after analyzing the data and surveys that participants filled in, decisions will be made to improve them for 2014.

Continued from front page EDUARDO DOLON expressed his satisfaction in seeing how they are successfully covering the vacant Plasa stands and announced that the council are already taking steps to begin the process of awarding the remaining 15 positions to be filled on the ground floor of the Central Market. The Mayor hopes that by the end of 2013, all positions will be filled on the ground floor La Plasa.

Finally, Eduardo Dolon recalled that the form of awarding these positions is done through the public auction process and the activities that can be operated as market stalls under the Ordinance in force range from butchers, grocery,

deli, frozen fruits and vegetables, bakery, fresh fish, meats and pickles, ready meals, hairdressing, selling photography, silverware, gambling, smoking and newspaper stands.

The mayor mentioned that negotiations have been underway for a year and a half to take over the two upper floors, which are owned by the company that built the present building in 1995. The first floor has a number of small shop units, set up as a kind of mini-mall, and on the top floor there is a multiplex cinema.

Currently only a guitar shop survives on the first floor and Dolon said “right now, we are looking at all possible solutions to push forward the building as an engine for

the city centre.” In this regard he added that it is the Councillor of Finance, Joaquín Albaladejo, who is leading the negotiations “that are very difficult. This is because various properties have been sold to third parties.” Yet he expressed confidence that before the end of the current municipal mandate these two floors can become a valuable part of the municipality. Dolon specifically mentioned that an important part of the building is now owned by a financial institution with which they have advanced talks.

Dolon said that “it is obvious that I am unhappy with the situation with the upper floors of the market, but we will do everything possible to regain there use.”

Dramatic Maigmó mountain rescue

A HELICOPTER crew performed a dramatic rescue on Saturday to retrieve a hiker from one of the highest points of the Maigmó in the Alicante region, a 1,296m challenge for climbing enthusiasts.

THE MAN had fallen into a rocky 20 metre ravine and lost consciousness for around five hours.

On regaining his senses he called the emergency number 112 and the Tibi local police were alerted but unable to reach him due to the difficulty of the terrain. A rescue helicopter was deployed to air lift the hiker. He was transferred to Alicante General Hospital where he was treated for broken ribs and bruises. Tibi local Police warn walkers to avoid walking at night and alone and to always carry a mobile telephone.

Trafico nabs speed kings

THE DGT (Directorate General of Traffic) of the Guardia Civil has reported that during its latest campaign for speed control from 19th to 25th August, more than 35,000 drivers were denounced. Most inspections were conducted by police during roadside checks with air assistance from Pegasus radar. One driver in Pontevedra was clocked travelling at 188kph in a 50kph zone. Another was doing an incredible 252kph on the AP-7 in a 120kph limit. Drivers caught at these excessive speed levels face a possible prison term of three to six months as well as the withdrawal of their driving license for up to four years.

Priest extradited to Britain A SPANISH judge has authorised an extradition order on an 85-yearold British priest. He is to be extradited back to Britain to face 16 charges of sexual assault, ten of which are described as ‘serious’, on young choirboys. The alleged crimes were committed in Derbyshire.

The priest was arrested in Tenerife and the extradition hearing was presided over by duty judge Eloy Velasco in Madrid this week. The identity of the priest has been withheld although National Police confirm that he is of Irish origin. The attacks were allegedly carried out between 1955 and 1991 on victims as young as seven.

Gibraltar ‘under siege’

by Jan Gamm A PHOTO-SHOP produced image of the ‘Spanish invasion of Gibraltar’ posted on Facebook last week by the mayor of Callosa de Segura, Francisco Perez Trigueros, has attracted a variety of comments, most of which labelled the PP mayor ‘foolish’ and the image a ‘harmless jape’.

The photo montage depicts the British territory under Spanish occupation. A regiment of rifle-toting Spanish soldiers march past the Rock where the unofficial symbol of Spain, the Osborne bull, stands beneath a squadron of Spanish jets trailing red and yellow smoke over British Gibraltar.

UNHELPFUL However, in Gibraltar and in neighbouring La Linea, where daily life becomes increasingly uncomfortable and costly for commuters due to over-regulated border controls, local residents are fast losing their sense of humour. The reaction to the mayor’s Facebook montage is less than appreciative and his actions have been called ‘childish’ and ‘unhelpful’.

Picardo maintains that a close inspection of the affairs of Gibraltar is welcome: it is one of the few European territories where European laws and policies have been carried out to the letter. Moreover he reiterates that the entire Gibraltar debacle has been propagated by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to smokescreen the alleged corruptions of his party, the Partido Popular, now under the scrutiny of the Spanish courts.

SPAIN’S ARGUMENT Spain’s side of the argument - if the ‘grey suits’ in Madrid may be trusted as a fair representation of national opinion - is that Gibraltar is allegedly a centre for encouraging the smuggling of tobacco (cigarettes in Gibraltar are 40% cheaper than on the Spanish mainland) and its bunkering trade is ‘a spillage risk to the maritime environment’ (Gi-

braltar enjoys a healthy profit from bunkering – delivering fuel to ships at anchor). But mostly its recently constructed artificial reef which it sees as an environmental hazard and an obstruction to Spain’s fishing industry. And by rights the Rock should be – well – Spanish…!

TIRELESS In reality nothing has changed in Gibraltar this week despite nuclear submarine HMS Tireless popping up in the bay, likely bound for other Mediterranean destinations but nonetheless a comforting reminder of ownership for flag-waving Gibraltar residents.

British sovereignty over Gibraltar is legal and in perpetuity despite the Facebook fantasies of over-imaginative Spanish small town bureaucrats – whom incidentally declined to comment to RTN.

What you see is not what you get LAST WEEK while shopping in a small supermarket we saw a ‘Promotion’ sign over something we liked so we bought it.

The next day, we returned to the same store to buy more of what was ‘on Promotion’. The poster was still there and the price on the poster was still the same. However, when we got to the cashier the price was a lot higher. We mentioned to the cashier that the poster still showed a lower price. We had to wait several minutes as someone was sent wandering all around the store in search of this big Promotion sign. They came back and said there was no Promotion even though the poster was clearly displayed.

We refused to pay the higher price. We now have to keep track of the price of things before we come to the cashier so that we will not be overcharged. I wonder how many other people see the price on Promotion signs and then get charged more than what the Promotion Signs say.

We do hope this helps other RTN readers not to be overcharged when they buy something displayed as a ‘Promotion’. This lesson has put a new spin on the saying ‘What you see is what you get’, rather: ‘What you see is not what you get!’

Thank you ON MONDAY 5th August, I mislaid a bunch of keys - my car and house keys - on the promenade at Torre de Horadada.

Thankfully some kind man, apparently wearing red shorts and with white hair, kindly handed them in to the Guardia Civil.

Isn’t it nice to know that there are still thoughtful and considerate people around? I honestly cannot thank him enough.

He will remember handing in my keys - if he contacts me, I would like to buy him a drink.

A little harsh

I THINK that A Loughlin is being a little harsh and a little bit pompous in his advice to this lady. Does he realise the size of the ex-pat population in and around Torrevieja? It is over 20,000. I think this contributes a lot to their economy. Don’t you think this deserves a little help? I agree that in every ayuntamiento it would be impractical but Orihuela ayuntamiento here in La Zenia I think it would be good PR. Lots of pensioners here have great difficulty with the Spanish language. I myself have been trying for a long time and still find it difficult. I have tried many times to speak Spanish in lots of places to be told they understand my English better. My home town is Stoke-on-Trent with a large population of Pakistanis and they provide translators; my daughter lives in Eversham with a large population of Polish, they also provide translators. So if they take our money don’t you think it is only fair that we have a service?

Leaving Spain during hot summer months

IT IS understandable that so many Brits and other expats leave Spain during the hot summer months to avoid the heat and noise. I live inland, which is even hotter than the coast.

Yet loads of tourists leave from various UK airports having paid high season air tickets to fly to the Costa Blanca for a couple of weeks to bake in the sun and go home with a tan. Plane loads of people coming and plane loads of people going. With all the summer heat and noise, I sometimes do not know whether I am coming or going.

The weather is so hot, and I am really

looking forward to August ending and the weather finally cooling off.

In the hot summer I even like going to the supermarket just to enjoy the air conditioning!Each day in August I have looked at the calendar and smile because September is coming, the incredibly hot, sticky summer will soon end, the noisy children will be back at school, and the noisy tourists will be gone until next year. You might ask, what do I like best about the hot, sticky, noisy summer? When it ends, is my reply.

Gibraltar troubles THE FAMILY just returned from a fortnight mostly an enjoyable trip - in Gibraltar. Each year we make this trek from our home in Villajoyosa down to Granada, toward Antequera and down to Malaga and on to Gibraltar to our favourite B and B and to stock up on our cherished British goods. This year, however, was not as enjoyable as in past years. When we arrived in La Linea, we had to endure several hours in a queue with many other irate motorists waiting to enter Gibraltar. The temperature was very hot and tempers were getting very hot as well. We finally were able to enter Gibraltar and do some shopping, but the long queues made the trip less enjoyable. With all this trouble between Spain and the UK over Gibraltar I wonder if the Spanish government is using this to change the channel away from all the scandals and the crisis happening in Spain?

It was nice to go to Gibraltar but even better to get back home.

London’s weirdest emergency calls

IN THE August 12th issue of ‘Time Magazine International’, under its weekly column entitled ‘Data’ (page 10) I quote: London’s weirdest emergency calls: The city’s fire brigade has responded to some 1,300 ‘trapped or stuck’ incidents since 2010, each costing taxpayers $445.

A: 79 calls for people trapped in handcuffs.

B: 18 for children with their heads stuck in toilets.

C: 4 for people with hands wedged in blenders D: 1 for a child with a Lego stuck on his finger.

Rubalcaba: clean hands

by Jan Gamm INCOME TAX documents of Socialist leader Alfredo Rubalcaba covering the past ten years have been published by the General Secretary of the PSOE. Earnings are declared at 823,026€ compared to PP Prime Minister Marian Rajoy’s income over the

same period which amount to €1.98 million. “Unlike Rajoy I have never collected an extra wage,” he quipped. 70% of Rubalcaba’s cash was a family inheritance. The report was published in response to a PP accusation that the head of the PSOE had never presented a declaration to the tax department.

Renfe starts the legal ball rolling RENFE HAS engaged the services of the law firm DAC Beachcroft of London as its legal representative in the inevitable forthcoming compensation claims following the tragic Santiago rail disaster. One month on, 14 of the injured passengers remain in hospital, one still in a critical condition. DAC Beachcroft also represented Spanair following the 2008 crash that killed 154 people and specialises in skilled negotiation to achieve out of court settlements.

Death of a daredevil

SPANISH ADVENTURER Álvaro Bultó died last Friday when his ‘wingfly suit’ failed to open in the Swiss Alps.

by Jan Gamm Extreme sport ‘wingflying’ enthusiasts can reach speeds of more than 220kph in suits that feature plastic sheeting webbed between the legs and arms. 51-year-old Bultó, who had completed an impressive 3,000 parachute jumps, attempted a jump from the top of Benidorm’s Bali Hotel last month with his ‘Wild Wolf’ display team but ran into difficulties when his parachute

became caught. He fell short of his beach target and landed on the roof of another hotel, escaping with minor bruises. Bultó has been a presenter of ‘Frontera Límite’, a programme about adventure sports, for 13 years. On Friday he was jumping from ‘High Nose’, a 550m mountain in the Alps. Swiss police confirmed that his suit “failed to open for indeterminate reasons.” Rescue services attended the scene by helicopter but could only confirm his death.

Sticks and stones

THE GUARDIA Civil at the border between Gibraltar and the Spanish mainland was pelted with small stones on Wednesday. The projectiles came from somewhere in the vicinity of a queue of motorcycles that had been building for several hours, mostly workers unable to return home due to the lengthy border wait. A number of insults and abusive remarks were also levelled at the officers on duty.

Naked moped rider arrested in sunflower field

THE GUARDIA Civil arrested a moped rider for drunk driving and reckless behaviour on Sunday. The young man was also naked. He was pursued by police for approximately 25 miles along the A-385 (Utrera-Puerto – Serrano). As officers tried to apprehend him he rode his moped onto the pavements of residential areas along the SE-437, endangering the lives of pedestrians. He eventually abandoned his moped to try to escape on foot through a field of sunflowers, incurring serious scratches on various parts of his anatomy. He was treated for his injuries and charged.

A poignant discovery THE TOMB of Pobla d’Ifach yielded a poignant discovery this week - the skeleton of a pregnant woman.

by Jan Gamm Her remains clearly show an unborn fetus, its bone development typical of a child at around six months gestation. “The size of spinal discs and the innominate is really small,” said José Luis Menendez, the architectural director of the excavation, “indicating that the child had not yet been born.” The child’s tiny arms are folded across its chest in the typical pose of a baby in the womb. In another discovery in a room in the gate area of Pobla d’Ifach, a jar was found containing the complete skeleton of a very young baby.

Man dies seeking phone coverage A YOUNG Ecuadorian man died in the early hours of Monday morning in the village of Beniaján, Murcia, near the Segura Valley after falling from a second floor balcony on Calle Maria Matas while seeking a signal for his mobile telephone. The 23-year-old victim leaned too far over the rail and fell to his death. His parents alerted the local police at 2.23am: an emergency unit attended the scene but could not save his life.

Michael Jackson Tribute delights Torrevieja MORE THAN a thousand spectators packed Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre over two nights, on Monday and Tuesday for ‘Moonwalker The Show’.

In the same week that the late Michael Jackson should have been celebrating his 55th birthday on Thursday, the touring Las Vegas show traces the musical legacy of the man dubbed the ‘King of Pop’, with the only difference being that some of the songs were adapted for the Spanish audience.

Direct from Las Vegas, the star of the show is Fréderick Henry, one of three official Michael Jackson impersonators, whose gestures, movements and his physical resemblance, made many people forget, that this was a tribute show. The main difference to this production from the Las Vegas show is that on this occasion Fréderick does not perform alone but was joined by Domingo Sanchez, who had come to the concert characterized as Jackson himself , and was invited to share the stage with Fréderick, with results so perfect that it seems that they had been rehearsing together for several days, when infact they had just met.

Adding to the electric atmosphere was the musical accompaniment by a group of four excellent musicians, not least was the flawless performance of the backing vocalists who accompanied the star on stage. Add to this the tight choreography from some of the performers who were more gymnasts than dancers, and the complicity of an audience, including children, many of whom were experiencing the Michael Jackson phenomena for the first time, resulted in a night where the spirit of Michael Jackson filled the theatre along with the rhythm of clapping, shouting and enthusiasm of the audience.

One of the high points of the evening was when a dozen children from the audience, took to the stage to sing “We Are the World”, along with artists. The show concluded with a performance of the much anticipated 1982, ground breaking MTV video, the legendary and inevitable interpretation of ‘Thrill-

er’, one of the most accomplished numbers of the show, which ended in a riot of voices and dancing on stage and the audience standing in the aisles to sing along and show their love for the late Michael Jackson.

I SAW a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker on Bank Holiday Monday. Now, with all the news going on around the world that’s no great shakes - but to me it was.

You see, I’ve been waiting since I first owned the Ladybird Book of British Birds (Vol. 1) to see a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and that was back in 1964.

Forty-nine years is a long time to wait to tick a box in your I-Spy Book of Things to Tick but at least I’ve now ticked it. And for that single moment I was joyously happy. It was like being seven again with that childlike sense of wonderment still intact; it hadn’t been worn away by worldly cynicism (i.e. old age) and for that single moment anything and everything was possible again - or, at least, that’s the abiding feeling that was carried along in that brief nano-second.

Of course, I hadn’t specifically been waiting to run into a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker all these years. Sadly, truth be told, I’d simply forgotten to be on the lookout for one. The fact that I did see one rekindled something long forgotten and it’s made me think about the way we all seem to dash about. And in that dashing about, all the things we miss. And, perhaps more importantly, all the things we put off for another time.

I was born in Brighton but I didn’t get to visit the iconic Royal Pavilion until I was thirty-three. Similarly, a New Yorker chum once told me he’d like to visit the Statue of Liberty before he got much older - he’d already retired at that point! He couldn’t explain why he’d never been before. He shrugged: “it’s always been there, so I’ve always been waiting to see it...”

All of which nonsense has made me recall William Henry Davis’s poem, Leisure. Do you remember it,

folks? It went over my head when I had to learn it at school but that was probably because I was in a rush to get the homework done and put The Beatles back on.

Studying it now, with an old git’s perspective, I think it really makes you think about time. But then, what do I know? I’m just a philistine.

Anyway, for you to enjoy (or not), let’s stick it on now. Take it away Billy Boy: What is this life if full of care We have no time to stand and stare?

No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep, or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

Struggling with your health provider?

ARE YOU thinking of changing your Health Provider but very concerned about the new terms, especially if you have pre existing conditions covered with your present company? Read on - we may able to help you with a solution.

Have you discovered that in 2012 your health provider was amalgamated by a multinational Spanish company? Maybe you were unaware at the time that this was going to occur, as information about this changeover was very sparse.

The majority of clients were not informed that the money would be taken out automatically in January 2013, unless they advised the company of their intention of cancelling; rather difficult to do if you did not know it was happening. Therefore you will have been tied into a Spanish Contractual Year with a company that does not offer a specialised ex-pat division.

Some of you may have already discovered when requesting authorisations/ appointments that as the new company does not speak any English, it is quite a challenge to communicate with them on a daily basis.

Many of you will be aware that the doctors/consultants list has changed dramatically and a large percentage of the doctors you used to see have chosen not to work with the new company. For those who have yet to discover the full implications of this changeover and could possibly still assume that everything will be the same, I can assure you that it is not.

For example, do you even know whether you still have the same cover? Should you or your partner become ill this could obviously be very stressful: my company appreciates this fact and that is why I personally

employ two full time administrators - both are bi-lingual, with English their first language. They both fully understand from their own experiences how difficult it can sometimes be living in a foreign country and how people need to have reassurance and guidance when they are worried about their health. They will personally handle appointments for you and provide any translation that you require: they will not leave you to face an illness on your own.

That’s all the bad news: now for the good news.

It’s Tomatina time again!

By Jan Gamm SPAIN’S CRAZIEST food fest, ‘Tomatina’, was held this week in the little town of Buñol, around 38km west of Valencia. Tomatina takes place on the last Wednesday of every August when truckloads of squishy tomatoes are emptied onto the streets for locals and visitors to enjoy one of the World’s biggest and messiest food fights!

Tomatina has become more and more popular over the years eventually forcing the local council to try to limit numbers by introducing an entry charge at 10€ per ticket.

AFTER PARTY There is also an ‘After Party’ with advance tickets selling at 20€ and the price climbing to 40€, sold out long before the event, attended by thousands that flock to hear the music, sample the paella and dance the night away!

Visitors are advised every year to wear old cloth-

ing, protective eyewear and be prepared to get down and dirty. Cars are parked some distance from the festivities and expensive convertibles are sensibly left at home.

The tomato fight commences with a ham placed atop a greasy pole – once the ham is retrieved, water cannons signal the start of the melee and after that the streets turn into a heaving river of bodies and red mush.

SQUEAKY CLEAN The orgy of tomato throwing stops after one hour and the town’s fire service kindly hoses down the streets with water supplied from the local aquaduct. The little town’s streets are beautifully cleansed, made squeaky clean by tomato acid, exhausted visitors squelch their way back to their vehicles and all is ‘paz y tranquilidad’ (peace and tranquillity) until next year! Lovely!

Bands Festival closes to full houses

By Keith Nicol THE XI INTERNATIONAL Festival of Bands ‘City of Torrevieja’ closed on Saturday with an outstanding performance of a demanding concert, by la Sociedad Musical ‘Ciudad de Torrevieja-Los Salerosos’ which was presented by local journalist, Francisco Reyes Prieto. As is tradition, at 9.00pm, the band, performed the traditional parade through the city centre, surprising pedestrians and people who were out for the evening, most of them sitting on the terraces of bars and restaurants around the city centre.

The Gala was chaired by the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, who accompanied the councillors of culture, Luis María Pizana and Social Welfare, Tomás Ballester, as well as the president of the Sociedad Musical ‘Ciudad de TorreviejaLos Salerosos’ Guillermo Hernandez, and the Director of the Symphony Orchestra of Torrevieja, José F. Sanchez. The band, which featured more than eighty musicians, under the baton of Adrian Hurtado Aldeger, began their concert with the quickstep ‘Way of roses’ by J. Franco followed by three exceptional works from the soundtrack of ‘The Godfather’ as part of an excellent evening of music, so diverse that there was certainly something for every taste.

The whole theatre stood and applauded in unison with the last note of ‘The year of the Dragon’. Torrevieja’s Mayor thanked all present, sponsors and their willingness of the bands to attend and perform at the festival, followed by presenting gifts to Band director, Adrian Hurtado.

Torrevieja’s new ‘Nautical Experience’

by Keith Nicol LUIS MARIA Pizana, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Tourism, accompanied by representatives of the fourteen members of ‘Torrevieja Nautical Experience’ (Tourism Product Club Nautico de Torrevieja), presented a new promotional product this week. It’s a new tourist brochure with different offers from each of the fourteen members who have joined the initiative. who are: Real Club Náutico, Marina International, Marina Salinas, Odyssey Diving, Bubbles Diving, Mediterranean Nautical School (Nautimed) Torrevela, Serenity Sailing, Nautical Sport Centre Torrevieja, Sunsail Cruises, Torrevieja Marine Excursions, The Scandalous, La Mata Surfing Club and Torrevieja Surf.

Luis María Pizana explained that this promotion has been financed jointly by the Department of Tourism and the companies and organizations involved in this project and that a total of 10,000 units have been printed and distributed of the first booklet, under the theme ‘Embark’, and is presented in a striking silhouette shaped boat, designed to immediately capture the attention of the customer to promote their web site: www.torreviejanauticalexperience.com.

The second brochure, under the theme ‘The sea at your feet’ is essentially a catalogue about the companies and their activities in two languages: Spanish and English, and is a sign of global tourism in Torrevieja. In short, a wide variety of opportunities to enjoy the sea and the marine experience.

Over sixties offered cut-price fitness

By Keith Nicol DEPUTY MAYOR and PP Team spokesman for the city of Torrevieja, Joaquín Albaladejo, said tis week that the Local Government Board has approved an application put forward by the Councillor for Sports, Luis María Pizana, which establishes a 50% reduction in the price of all activities in the Sports City requiring a sports instructor, such as gym, body combat, aerobics, fitness, for people aged 60 years and retired.

Albaladejo noted that this is a major

change in what the public pay to use the facilities of the Sports City. The overall idea is to encourage all citizens of Torrevieja who are in this age group to take part in organised sports. Albaladejo stressed that this 50% discount for this group is another way to encourage exercise and healthy habits of citizens registered in the city of Torrevieja. Albaladejo also said that council has approved lower prices for paddle tennis from12 to 10 euros an hour with lights and from 8-6 euros without power.

Mobile Photography enthusiasts get set for Mobile World (Mowo)

by Keith Nicol INSTAGRAM MAY be photography’s poor man’s method of immediate gratification by allowing images taken with mobile devices a way to send photographs around the glob in an instant, rather than using a ‘proper’ camera! However, new wi-fi cameras, wi-fi memory cards and attachments for real cameras are now entering the scene, aling ‘real’ photographers to jump on the Instagram band wagon for the first time, rather than turning their noses up at what is essentially, the digital world’s version of APS verses 35mm from the analogue era. To this end, Torrevieja is not just the most proactive Spanish city, but one of the first globally when it comes to promoting this new concept.

The event follows in the footsteps of the first, very successful and well received, world ‘instagrammers’ conference, held last May. The announcement of the second edition is another boost for tourism in the Torrevieja calendar of events. The first world congress ‘instagrammers’ attracted more than two hundred members of this network who published thousands of photographs with the name of Torrevieja, around social networks. Organisers are already preparing a second event of its kind, now renamed as ‘Mowo 2013’, for the World Meeting of Mobile Photography. The second edition of this conference will be held in Torrevieja, from September 13th to 15th and is again directed and led by one of Spain’s most followed ‘instagrammers’, torrevejense Gabriel Samper Hernández (@Kainxs).

Learning from the feedback received from

the first conference of its kind, the renewed and renamed Mowo (Mobile World) is out to try to emulate and surpass that first conference and rally the enthusiastic community of mobile photography. Mobile photography is the focus of this cultural event whose programming includes lectures, Mowo contest exhibition, exhibitions, workshops, and ‘photowalks’, plus live music, activities for children and technical seminars focused on tourism. It is expected that more than fifteen speakers will be participating in this event that aims to be the most important in Spain in the field of mobile photography utilising ‘Instagram’. The conference will take place in Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre and the Vista Alegre Exhibition Hall.

Computer courses for youth and unemployed

By Keith Nicol SAN FULGENCIO Town Hall are once again offering free courses to help with job searching and preparedness for local unemployed and youth residents. For the third consecutive year, the government team, led by Carlos Ramírez has been awarded a grant from the ‘Bienestar social’ Department of “Diputación” (County Council) to give computer courses.

The courses will be starting the 4th and 5th of September for young people up to 35 years old and for the unemployed. The aim of these courses is to improve their information technology skills at a medium level. The objective of the courses for the unemployed is to produce training activities to improve the employability through the use of the information technology.

Both courses are free and limited places are offered. They are organized by the Youth Department and the Social Services Department of the Town Hall of San Fulgencio and the County Council of Alicante in collaboration with the I. E. S. of San Fulgencio.

€12,000 nightmare to reconnect electricity to a repossessed property HANDS UP if you did not have an electrical survey done before purchasing a property in Spain. Both hands up if your estate agent said “they don’t do surveys in Spain.” Now let’s do the largest ever Mexican Wave ever seen across the Costa Blanca…

It’s not surprising to find that people are bypassing surveys in the current economic climate in a bid to save money. Some estate agents even discourage the practice fearing surveys may reveal problems that will cause potential buyers to withdraw from sales.

Here is a tale about what can happen when a small saving can result in a nightmare - and you ask yourself: “was it really worth it?” I received this email asking for some much needed advice for a repossessed property on an urbanisation somewhere in the Valencian region: “We purchased a repossessed property in January and told we would have to apply to Iberdrola for an electricity supply because the meter had been removed. The previous occupants vacated the property some 18 months ago.

“We contacted a builder who said he would arrange for boletins to get the electric and water put back on for us. The water was no problem. However, it transpires that the builder’s electrician was informed by Iberdrola that we could not be reconnected because to do so would take them over capacity. This is despite being told by the neighbour that there had been a supply to

the property previously for several years. Every other property around us has electricity.

“The electrician continued negotiating with Iberdrola who have now said they can connect us if the electricity supply comes from “the other side of the property.” They want us to pay 12,000€ for a 9-metre galvanised pole to be put up and for wiring to be re-routed.

“Our builder explained that Iberdrola has given our electricity supply away and now they want us to pay for a new supply. We are gutted and came with a very tight budget.

We don’t seem to be getting anywhere. We have had nothing official from Iberdrola yet.”

A survey is essential for properties purchases in Spain, especially repossessions. It is important to distinguish between an electrical and a building survey. A building surveyor will not fully understand how to test and inspect an electrical installation. Just because you may be getting a bargain, don’t cut corners on areas such as surveys and searches. End of August tidy up MOST SUMMER visitors will now have left and the summer fiestas of villages and towns are now mainly over so there is time to give the garden a general tidy up after a month of just keeping it alive through the hottest days of the year. by

THE TOP things that need doing over the next few weeks are as follows: Trim untidy excess growth off the sides and tops of trees and bushes Deadhead flowering plants to make them tidy and stimulate an early autumn flowering Cut back dying growth of flowered summer lilies and other bulbs Sweep or vacuum up fallen leaves and mix into a compost heap or store in large black plastic bags with a few air holes to rot down to leaf mould by next Spring Cut the dead growth off lavender plants if not already done: if you have a lot consider buying a still and distilling lavender next year in early or mid-August If you have had a lot of visitors and the swimming pool is a little murky from accumulated oil emulsions from sun tan lotions and oils, give it an extra sparkle by using a flocculating agent. How can the future legal changes in Spanish Family Law affect you?

AS MANY of you already know, a draft bill has been published regarding the modification of the Spanish Civil Code, which mainly affects Family Law: divorce, separation, marriage, nullity or annulment of the marriage, etc.

One of the areas expected to be changed is the regulation of the custody of the minor children. It needs to be remembered that we are talking of a draft bill only so it is possible that what is finally approved will be different from what we analyze today.

Following some regional laws, like the ‘shared or joint custody law of the Valencia Region’, it is intended to modify the national legal regulation (Spanish Civil Code) in the sense of facilitating

shared custody. It must be remembered that today joint custody in some parts of Spain is unusual, as there is a preference to the custody in favor of one sole parent, normally the mother. This draft tries to allow the judges to be able to agree and take into account the interests of minor children, giving custody to one parent or both, or jointly.

Although no preference is given to the joint or shared custody, (unlike Valencia law) it is left up to the judge to decide what is best for the children.

Other modifications are included in this draft bill, among which must be highlighted those that affect the attribution of the use of the family home and the exclusion of the possibility of custody being awarded to a parent

immersed in a domestic or violence criminal process, etc...

These changes will not only affect those Spanish who do not have Civil Residence in a community with its own family law like Catalans, Valencians, etc., they will also affect foreigners living in Spain and according to the private international law, the Spanish Law will apply to their divorce or separation. Note that according to the Rome III Regulation, Spanish law could apply to divorces of foreign residents here in Spain.

Here comes autumn AS SUMMER draws to a close all the politicians, bankers and bureaucrats get back to work, so what looks likely to impact the financial markets this autumn?

UK YET MORE banking problems with the Co-op and others needing to raise capital, which looks like it will come from shareholders and bond holders - this coupled with more mis-selling scandals on the horizon its looks like it will be a busy time on the banking front.

Interest rates are going to remain low for the foreseeable future so savers will suffer from low to nonexistent savings rates that in no way match inflation.

EUROPE With the German elections in September there has been a determined but not to successful attempt to make out that everything is rosy in the EU. However, it looks like the Eurozone crisis will be back on the agenda following the announcement that Greece requires a third bailout of €10billion.

On a more positive note Germany’s PMI (an indicator of the economic health of the manufacturing sector) showed better than expected signs of growth. This cannot be said of the rest of the EU with France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, etc. still showing little sign of recovery. So there is still some way to go before we can all relax and start to get a little more confident in the economies and banks in Europe.

US The news that the US federal reserve is going to wind down its bond buying has meant the US dollar value has risen. This will mean that US exports are more expensive to the rest of the world but imports cheaper.

The US still has a huge and ever growing national debt this is an issue that will not simply disappear and needs to be addressed.

EMERGING MARKETS Emerging markets currency values have fallen substantially in the last few weeks as speculation mounts that the US Federal Reserve is preparing to wind down its bond buying programme. The prospect of Fed cutting its ‘cheap money’ stimulus scheme has plunged emerging markets into crisis with Brazil, Thailand, India and Indonesia bearing the brunt of a major sell-off.

However, China yet again is bucking the trend and stabilising, with growth predicted to be at 7.4%.

WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN TO THE AVERAGE MAN ON THE STREET? It means that volatility could return to the stock markets so your investments will show more ups and downs, but all indicators are that the upwards trend will continue all be it at a slower pace.

If you want your savings to outperform inflation you need to accept that in today’s market you need to take some risk be it small and take your money out of the banks into alternative investments.

Taking out a Spanish mortgage by

MUCH OF the talk recently around Spanish mortgages has focused around those having difficulties paying them.

THE PRACTICES of the boom years meant that large mortgages were often agreed too easily and the terms and conditions around them were often not in the house purchaser’s best interests.

In the rush to buy houses in Spain, purchasers were perhaps given few details about how the mortgage would work in practice and wrongly assumed that they operated in a similar way to how they would in the UK. This lack of information has enabled some people to appeal against ‘abusive clauses’ in their mortgage agreements. The new mortgage law enabled those struggling to pay their mortgage to have this taken into consideration before eviction proceedings take place.

MAKING CONTRACTS MORE TRANSPARENT In the light of this poor practice, there are renewed efforts to make obtaining a mortgage more realistically aligned to the applicant’s income whilst ensuring that there is a fairer and more transparent contract between the house purchaser and the bank.

Mortgages are still available but are not offered as quickly on as little information as they used to be.

New mortgages must be accompanied by a handwritten note signed by the client saying that he/ she has been informed about the terms and conditions of the mortgage. This information wasn’t always conveyed before, leaving the mortgage applicant vulnerable to all kinds of unreasonable conditions that they might not even have been aware of. The law also includes that if the Notary spots an abusive clause they are entitled to stop the signing of the mortgage agreement.

VALUATION Whereas in the UK it would be almost taken as standard that the buyer would secure an independent valuation and survey by a professional surveyor, this was rarely the case in Spain. Banks were often the only ones to value the property and were only interested in ensuring that the value of the building covered their own investment. Now, applicants have to have their own valuation carried out in addition to that of the bank.

RESTRICTIONS Previously little consideration was given to the

ability of the applicant to pay or the practicality of the time frame within which payments would continue. The new mortgage law brings with it some new boundaries. A mortgage cannot be taken out for longer than 30 years and must be settled by retirement age.

GETTING THE RIGHT BALANCE There were times when mortgages were too readily available and people were encouraged to borrow beyond their means. The pendulum then swung so that getting any kind of a mortgage was very difficult and a mood of almost excessive caution seemed to dominate.

It is quite right that limits are placed on mortgage offers but mortgages do need to be within the reach of those aspiring to them. Hopefully this new mortgage law will help us to achieve the right balance between appropriate caution and enabling people keen to buy their own home to get their foot on the ladder.

THE POOLS A nice big pool awaits you with plenty of sunbeds plus an excellent Kids pool located in a shaded position so you don´t have to worry about the Kids roasting away in the sun! For those who prefer their breaks child free there is an Adult only pool on the rooftop, a huge bonus to be honest. The indoor pool is fantastic (obligatory silly hats only 2.50€) with some nice features.

Pool towels are available for a 1€ fee. They keep the pool area closed until 10am, to stop the annoying folks putting towels out before breakfast.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW The walk to the beach takes 20 minutes on the flat, regular buses stop outside the hotel to take you down to the beach and back (Taxis cost about 6€). Benidorm Palace is across the road for a superb dinner and show experience (a must) and Aqualandia and Mundomar just a 10 minute walk behind the hotel. The road leading into Benidorm is littered with bars and cafés including the popular Levi´s Showboat for some fun nights out. From September onwards expect mainly couples and very few children. This is not a hotel with lots of groups so unlikely to encounter any Hens or Stags here, hoorah! Enjoy, we did.

Rich Bitch re-opens summer break...... after

OVER THE years Jordan Rivers and the Rich Bitch Showbar have featured in many television and radio shows.

THE BBC followed the Rich Bitch team for over a year to film the 8-part prime time documentary ‘Escape to the Sun’.

‘Inside Out’ from ITV showcased Jordan Rivers’ talent and more recently Jordan Rivers starred as the Vicar at Mel and Magdes beach wedding in ITV’s ‘Benidorm’.

Gary Brown, (Jordan Rivers), and Michael Beddow moved to Benidorm (Spain) in 1999 to open a new drag showbar called The ‘Rich Bitch’. Their story caught the attention of BBC1 television researchers preparing a new TV documentary about Brits who moved from the UK to Benidorm to start a new life. The BBC cameras followed Gary and Michael from March 1999 to February 2000.

‘Escape to the Sun’ began showing to critical acclaim on BBC1 in January 2001, followed by other TV appearances including ‘Inside Out’, and ITV’s awarding winning comedy ‘Benidorm’.

The Spanish drink a lot of coffee but not much tea - this is especially evident if you ever go into an electrical store to purchase an electric kettle. There will be row upon row of coffee machines but probably a choice of two kettles.

Still, as the saying goes, when in Rome...

Here are the most common choices of coffee: Cafe Solo - Equivalent to an Espresso: a small, very strong black coffee Cafe con Leche - Half cafe solo and half hot milk Cafe Bombon - A small glass containing condensed milk with cafe solo: very sweet!

Cafe Americano - Large black coffee Cafe Cortado - Cafe solo with a drop of milk Cafe con Hielo - Pronounced ‘yello’ and mostly drunk in the Summer time, this is cold, iced coffee. You will be served a normal coffee and be bought a separate glass with ice - then you pour the coffee over it Cafe Sombra - (or Cafe Manchado) is mostly milk with a few drops of coffee Cafe Carajillo - A cafe solo served with a shot of brandy... obviously a very popular choice! You will witness most builders having one for breakfast and the price is far cheaper than a Starbucks frothy milk concoction in the UK! Enjoying a happy retirement COSTA BLANCA gardener and writer Dick Handscombe has moves further into the lifestyle arena with his new book “Your Practical Guide to Having a Great Retirement”.

The latest of 19 books - the majority dealing with all gardening and business – it has just been published by Amazon Create Space in hard copy and joins the earlier ‘Making Waterless Gardens’ as an easy to read guide inside a bright colourful cover.

And he plans to follow these by using the self-publishing site to reprint two earlier lifestyle works into the format – they are already available electronically through Kindle – ‘Your Personal Guide to Making Authentic Valencia Paellas’ and ‘Living Well from Our Mediterranean Garden’.

Dick, who also pens RTN’s gardening column, said he drafted a retirement self-help book as long ago as 1994 but has returned to the project and “polished” the idea.

KINDLE He said Create Space enabled him to include questionnaires and tables of statistics barred from the Kindle format.

“With this you can design a cover, load up the copy, do the pricing, and make a marketing plan...it’s amazing,” said the writer. “It is available through Amazon and when someone buys it, it is printed to order and sent to them.

“It has come at a perfect time for my purposes and this new book. I can write to companies making people redundant asking them to buy the book. It would be a great help to them.

“It is designed to help people retiring or thinking about retiring – and for people coming to Spain who are sitting indoors, who perhaps should rethink their retirement.”

And he said the book was “good fun” and gently warned of the pitfalls of doing nothing or becoming isolated. “It has self-help strategies and suggestions of what to do on retirement, pretty much from the first day of leaving work.”

The salt of the earth IT’S AMAZING the things you learn when you least expect it.

WHEN I visited the idiosyncratic Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum in Guadalest, on Spain’s Costa Blanca, I was given an in-depth lecture about the world of salt, salt and pepper shakers, and salt cellars from Andrea Ludden and her son Alex. And very interesting it was.

As we wandered around the museum I found it hard to believe that the twenty-thousand pair display of fat chefs; ruby red tomatoes; guardsmen in bear skins; The Beatles; Santa’s feet sticking out of a chimney; pistols and potatoes; a copy of the salt and pepper shaker cufflinks that Lady Diana wore (which fortunately, are sealed or their contents would have sprayed everywhere when she shook hands), have any other reason for coming together than simply being someone’s idea of being collectable – but they do.

“Salt is much more important in our lives and history than most people think,” says Alex. “The word ‘salarium’, salary, comes from the fact that Roman soldiers were paid part of their income in salt. It’s also thought that the word ‘soldier’ itself comes from the Latin sal dare, to give salt. If you look at common phrases such as ‘the salt of the earth’, he’s not worth his salt’, ‘below the salt’, etc. you can get an idea of how important salt was.” And it still is, because without salt in our diet we couldn’t survive.

The collection of over forty thousand pairs, half in Guadalest and half in their museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, started by the simple purchase of a pepper mill at a garage sale, shortly after the family moved to the US – but it didn’t work!

“That first one didn’t work, so I bought a couple more,” says Andrea. “I used to stand them on the window ledge

of my kitchen, and neighbours thought I was building a collection. Nothing could have been further from my mind!

They began to bring me some beautiful ones, and eventually I had about 14,000 on shelves all over the house, even in the bedrooms. So we decided to create a museum.”

The vogue for collecting salt and pepper shakers was mainly brought about by the invention of the automobile. It was because people could travel more freely, either for work or on holiday that the souvenir industry came about. Salt and pepper shakers were cheap, easy to carry and colourful, making ideal gifts. Imagine you lived in an isolated village somewhere and your son or daughter brought you a set in the shape of the Tower of London when they came on their annual visit home. It wouldn’t be used but be carefully kept as a decorative item. That’s how, in the main, many of the early collections began.”

There’s almost nothing you can imagine that hasn’t been copied as a salt and pepper shaker, and many of them reflect the designs, colours and preoccupations of the period. For example, a cooker from the 1940’s will look totally different from the cookers of the 1990’s, and it is through using these differences and the materials from which they were made that we can get an idea of how people lived at any given time.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Linking Words TODAY WE are going to look at various words and expressions that connect ideas. We need these when we are stringing several things together and want to explain that one thing is in consequence of , in contrast to, or in some other way connected to, a previous one.

The most frequently heard and simplest example of this is the word “entonces” which means “so”. If you listen to anyone speaking in English for more than a few sentences, you will find the word “so” popping up over and over again, and the same thing happens with “entonces”.

Variations on “entonces” are “así que” (so), “por tanto” and “por lo tanto” (therefore) and also “pues” which can also mean “so”. It’s best not to get too worried about when to use one or the other as they are all very similar in meaning, although you would sound a bit pompous if you kept using “por lo tanto” all the time in everyday conversation.

Those words move the conversation forward to the next idea e.g. “entonces fuimos a la playa” (so we went to the

beach) whereas sometimes, we want to look backwards for a moment and explain the reason or cause behind an action. For example “Fuimos a la playa ya que hacía sol” (We went to the beach as/since it was sunny). A better known word with basically the same meaning as “ya que” is “porque” (because). “Fuimos a la playa porque hacía sol”. (We went to the beach because it was sunny). There is a shade of difference in meaning here, but it is very slight and both sentences carry the same basic message, which could also be expressed by “Hacía sol. Entonces/ así que/por tanto/ por lo tanto fuimos a la playa”.

Sometimes the second idea of our sentences expresses some kind of contrast with the first. There are a variety of words to deal with this, all of which have direct equivalents in English, so it’s really easier to translate them than to spend too much time analysing their exact meanings. “Aunque” means “although”. To continue our example, we could say “No fuimos a la playa, aunque hacía sol” (We didn’t go to the beach although it was sunny). Two

phrases that work in a similar way are “sin embargo” (however) and “no obstante” (nevertheless). For example: “No hacía sol. Sin embargo, fuimos a la playa” (It wasn’t sunny. However, we went to the beach”. “No hacía sol.

No obstante, fuimos a la playa”. (It wasn’t sunny. Nevertheless, we went to the beach).

An altogether more complicated way of saying exactly the same thing is – “In spite of the fact that it wasn’t sunny, we went to the beach.” and “Despite the lack of sunshine, we went to the beach”.

“In spite of” and “despite” are “a pesar de que” followed by a verb in the subjunctive, and “a pesar de” followed by a noun. Okay, here are the examples: “A pesar de que no hiciera sol, fuimos a la playa” and “A pesar del frío, fuimos a la playa”. (Lack of sunshine – “falta de sol” just doesn’t sound right here). I think you might agree that “a pesar de” is for laying down and avoiding unless you are really sure of what you’re doing. The same goes for “unless” (a no ser) which also takes the subjunctive. I’d stick with “entonces” for now if I were you.

TKO back on the airwaves TKO FM, 91.9 FM, the Southern Costa Blanca’s original fun in the sun radio station returned to the air this week after an absence of almost a year. In a direct switch, Radio Torrevieja dropped the name and the 107.1 frequency and the staff, presenters and producers took on the mantle of TKO, continuing their popular mix of music from yesteryear and today with more of a feel for the former TKO Gold mix of music, catering to the strong 45-plus age group.

Radio Torrevieja had to once again close their service on 107.1FM for more essential transmitter work and the management of the station wanted to pass on their sincere apologies for this, but they will be transmitting on a lower power and transmission area on a temporary basis on 91.9 FM and of course-on line. The service area is basically Torrevieja and the immediate vicinity, from La Marina to Pilar de la Horadada, but they hope to be up to full power and reaching their in-land listeners within a few days.

TKO, Total Knockout Radio started in 2003 at the same time as La Marina based URB FM, which effectively trebled the amount of English language radio stations on the Southern Costa Blanca at the time. Now under new ownership and management, TKO are based in Torrevieja and work closely with local charity events, such as Reach Out and the Elche Children’s Home among others and are a regular feature at FC Torrevieja home football games at the Vicente Garcia Stadium.

They have live broadcasting Monday to Friday from 8.00am until 8.00pm and from 9.00am to 6.00pm on the weekends with a mix of music, information, live interviews, local, UK and international news, charity billboards, quizzes and on weekends, sport and request shows. They have further plans for expansion and speciality shows for the future.

Malware problems HI AUNTY, I have found your column very helpful in the past, I wonder if you can assist with a problem that’s just occurred?

I appear to have picked up some malware which means when I click on items (not always the same - appear random) a page opens with the address www.serve.bannersdontwork.com and then go to a Chrome Questionnaire. I have opened in Safe Mode and scanned with AVG, Malwarebytes and Super AntiSpyware with no results. I’ve tried searching on the web with no success: any suggestions? Janet

To remove serve.bannersdontwork.com from Google Chrome: 1. Click the Customize and Control Google Chrome button on the browser toolbar, select Tools -> Extensions.

Aunty says: It sounds like you have installed some software that has installed some malware that has changed the settings on your browser. And you will have to remove the malware from your browser: 1. Open Internet Explorer, click on the gear icon (Tools for Windows XP users) at the top (far right), then click again on Internet Options 2. In the Internet Options dialog box, click on the ‘Advanced’ tab, then click on the ‘Reset’ button 3. In the Reset Internet Explorer settings section, check the Delete personal settings box, then click on Reset 4. When Internet Explorer finishes resetting, click Close in the confirmation dialogue box and then click OK. 5. Restart Internet Explorer to make the changes take effect.

Warning alarm DEAR AUNTY: On occasions when I switch the machine on there is a high, interrupted alarm bell tone before anything comes on the screen. What could this indicate and is it important enough to be checked out? Thanks for all the good tips I get from your page in RTN. Morag Aunty says: On Starting the PC they do a check of various systems. If the PC finds any problems, then it will emit a series of ‘beeps’ when it starts up. These beeps are usually a series of beep, and can refer to certain pieces of hardware having problems. For example, a beep may be that it cannot detect a mouse or keyboard, or a series of beeps can mean problems with the memory. See: http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm (The beep code emitted depends on what make of motherboard you are running - and your Acer manual may have a list of them to determine exactly what the problem is!)

Wi-Fi connection failure DEAR AUNTY: I’ve got another question for you (my Mom used to say ‘always hang onto a good ‘un). I have Wifi supplied by Movistar. Quite regularly the internet connection fails even though the buttons are all lit up. If I switch it off at the back and immediately switch it back on again it works fine. This happens daily and can happen up to two or three times in one day. Is this down to Movistar or do I have a faulty router?

Aunty says: In answer to your question - either or both! If you connect a PC / laptop to the router via an ethernet cable, does the internet still function via cable when the wireless is not? This way you can check to see if there is an issue with the actual ADSL connection that is failing or the router / Wifi is failing.

Five guys flying high!

I HAVE watched the rise and rise of boy band One Direction but always with half an eye on the whole thing suddenly coming to a grinding halt. Like so many X Factory performers before them, the odds are stacked heavily in favour of their career hitting the wall sooner rather than later.

However, in the wake of a new movie called ‘This Is Us’ and the reflections director Morgan Spurlock shared with online magazine Guilty Pleasures, it coming out like these 1D boys are made of the right stuff.

The director told the mag: “I was expecting the worst from these young lads but I was

taken aback by their down-to-earth attitude, they were so un-diva,” then heaping even more praise on the teen idols he explained, “When you come into a project like this you’re like, ‘Oh great, which one is it going to be...?’ I was so glad they weren’t like that at all.”

When it comes to making a fly on the wall documentary film like ‘This Is Us’ if there are too many blips the process of cutting out all the nasty stuff renders the movie a complete mess that has no real direction

(pun intended), but it’s reading like Harry, Niall and Liam, all 19, Zayn 20, and Louis 21, are real lads who are not stuck up their whatsernames, which suggests that their careers are about to go into the stratosphere.

They are now being talked about in the same breath as the Beatles who were equally down to earth when it came to appearing in films, and with the massive numbers of what they call ‘the fandom’, this could become the closest thing to Beatle mania that’s been seen since those heady days of the 60s.

Musically there is an awful lot of work to do to get anywhere near the Liverpool lads so let’s hope their songwriting and song selection is out of the top drawer eh!

MATT LUCAS came up with an interesting angle for his series ‘The Matt Lucas Awards’ by having his mum on the show and asking her opinion from time to time, and now I read that young comedian Jack Whitehall is to be given his own chat show on BBC 3 called ‘Backchat’ and his dad will be part of the show, interjecting about how his son should never have dropped out of college etc.… sounds a bit dodgy to me.

This piece is quite something as Naomi Watts, the actress who plays Princess Diana in the new biopic ‘Diana’ has been speaking about how she felt a ‘presence’ during the filming and when she was struggling to keep it all together she used to talk to Diana to ask her permission to carry on. We continually read about actors getting into the part, but this is way off the page.

Talking about new movies, the film of 60s TV show The Man from U.N.C.L.E is slowly but surely coming together cast wise and according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ Hugh Grant has been signed up to play the head of British Naval Intelligence. Good luck to the guy, but… intelligence?

More rumours suggest that Tom Cruise and George Clooney will be playing the two lead roles... ummm…

Mary Mary quite contrary!

THE GREAT British Bake Off was here a week or two ago when I discovered that thanks to sharp professional knives most of the competitors cut themselves to ribbons at the rehearsal stages. This time it’s about Mary Berry, a woman in her late 70’s who doesn’t suffer fools, and what she had to say about some of the other TV chefs. Talking to the Radio Times she said “Jamie Oliver is a ‘joy’ but I ‘hate’ Gordon Ramsay’s programmes, I don’t know who has told him it makes good television.” Switching back to Jamie, Mary reflected: “James Oliver is a joy, I saw him yesterday and he agreed that when he was 23 he was irritating, bumptious and over the top, but he’s made cooking fun,” not a woman to mince her words is Mary. The queen of cakes then filled a few more column inches when she said about Strictly Come Dancing “I’m a showoff, but only with things I do well, I won’t do Strictly or any of those ghastly reality programmes ... I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! would be the end ... It makes me shudder.” Don’t you just love her!

Life recipe

Bacon and Egg Salad with Oil and Balsamic Dressing FOR YEARS I turned my nose up at the thought of warm salads, and then I went to France. The French are so creative when combining warm meat and fish in salads and I was soon converted. Ideally you need thick cuts of bacon (I used cured pork loin in this version) but ordinary sliced bacon would do just as well. You could try adding a few bits of spicy sausage such as Chorizo or even pieces of black pudding such as Spanish Morcilla if you like that kind of thing.

• 400g thick cut bacon, sliced into strips.

• 4 fresh eggs.

• Mixed salad leaves.

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper.

For the dressing • 4-5 tbls extra virgin olive oil.

• 2 tbls balsamic vinegar.

1. Fry the sliced bacon over moderate heat until well browned.

2. Meanwhile bring a large pan of water to the boil and drop in the eggs to poach them for 2-3 minutes.

3. Place a handful of salad leaves in the centre of four large serving plates and, when the bacon and eggs are ready, throw the bacon over the salad.

4. Quickly return the frying pan to the heat and add the olive oil and balsamic vinegar, leaving them to warm through while you place a poached egg on top of each salad.

5. Stir the dressing, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan and drizzle this over the salads. Season the eggs with a little salt and pepper and serve immediately.

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10-15 minutes

Fund Raiser for AECC and CF Sporting, San Fulgencio

By Keith Nicol A SAN FULGENCIO Select 11 will play a charity football game against a team from the Policia Local on Sunday September 8th at 11.00am to raise funds for CF Sporting de San Fulgencio and the AECC Charity. All proceeds will be divided equally between the two. Anyone wishing to play for the San Fulgencio Select Team should register their interest at the Zodiac Bar in Marina Urbanisation or the Power Bar in San Fulgencio Village. Players are expected to make a donation. The more you pay the more you play!

Spectators pay 3€ entrance fee at the gate and there will be a raffle drawn at half time, with other half time entertainment. There will also be a Paella for 300 people at full time. Tickets can be purchased for the Paella for 2€ at the Offices for the Urbanisation, Calle Madrid and at the Offices of Paulino Herrero at the Police Station. Also, tickets will be available at the Tourist Information Office.

The event will be broadcast live by BIG FM, Radio.

After the Paella has been served, there will be an Auction of two authenticated framed photographs; one, of Amy Winehouse and her Back to Black CD and the other of Halle Berry, from her role in the James Bond Movie, Die Another Day. These are on show at the Offices for the Urbanisations. Donations of Raffle prizes are welcome and should be directed to the Offices of the Urbanisations, Calle Madrid in San Fulgencio.

Get on yer bike Monthly cycling tips, advice and routes CYCLE ROUTE 18: QUESADA TO DOLORES / CATRAL / MARJAL CAMPSITE LEAVE QUESADA and head for Benijofer, turning left at the traffic lights (cobbled area), cycling downhill for about 300metres. Turn right just before the edge of the town, cycle past the houses until you come to orange / lemon groves and a track that takes you to the river.

At the river turn left and cycle over the bridge, down the ramp then go left for about 15metres where there is a narrow lane. Cycle down here until you come to a road: you are now in Formentera.

Work your way down through the village until you come to the main road (be careful as many are one-way streets). Turn left and cycle out of Formentera on the main road until you come to a camino road on your right (approximately 2kms).

Take this and cycle up and over the bridge across the CV91 Guardamar

road and just follow this camino road until you come to the next junction (road to Daya Nueva) where you go straight over, following it through some lovely cultivated land with beautiful views until you come to the next road where you turn left.

Follow this road all the way until you come to Dolores (4kms). You can either stop in Dolores in the town square where there are numerous restaurants and bars or continue through the town following the signs for Catral / Crevillente.

Leaving Dolores, pick up the cycle path which takes you all the way to Catral (4kms). Keep following the signs for Crevillente. Leaving Catral, you come to a roundabout which if you turn right you go through San Felipe Neri, but go straight on (there are signs for the campsite). Cycle parallel to the AP7 until you come to a turning to your right and a bridge across the AP7, which takes you straight into Marjal campsite:

there is a lovely restaurant.

It really is well worth a look round the site and the facilities that are on offer which are open to everyone. On your way home you can just retrace your steps or go left after coming over the bridge and this road will take you to the entrance to El Hondo nature reserve, which is a lovely route if you have the time. Additional time: approximately one hour / 10kms.

Total Cycling time: 4 Hours Total Distance: Approximately 42kms.

Summary: Lovely, flat route with great views however had to use the main roads a couple of times.

Alpha to Omega

FEAR IS a four letter word, and it is the main reason for people not being able to cope with the Spirit World.

Understandably the concept of human survival seems so very large and all revealing when it comes to belief and understanding. Fear will stop the necessary processes throughout life and it won’t allow for anything that takes someone away from their core instincts. Faith is fuelled by experience and understanding and destroyed when it becomes too hard to handle or too much to take in.

I appreciate that this fear keeps so many away from my door and that of other Spirit workers. Apprehension is a natural reaction whilst genuine fear in this case is of the unknown, and many of us would be cautious especially when there is negativity arising from either ignorance or myth. The old Wife’s tales stood us in good stead to summarise the gamut of the ungodly, and to give out information that somehow gave us a basic protection. But it is a superior level of protection that brings comfort and transparency with all dealings with Spirit, as there can be nothing there within a tight spiritual contract that intentions or triggers stress or trauma. All of us do react differently to all situations, but with that we are familiar too, there comes a deep feeling of wellbeing and when all turns sour, as it indeed can, then we open a new can of worms. Spirit is used to working on specific levels, and yet because death must appear somewhere in the banner headline, it can be something seen somehow as macabre or drenched in perpetual sorrow. I have to accept that daily I have one foot in the land of the living, whilst the other balances me by tracing the heritage of Spiritual survival, in death.

And, yes, I have been subjected to fear, but though it may have given me the shivers, it soon found me an

If it’s your birthday this week

acceptable level to work alongside my own specific belief and comprehension. Each and everyone is an individual with their own deserved limits to adhere to.

However we are all of us born to die, and are in fact born dying, and we can, if we so wish to, tick off each day as one less in our timeline. Since death is promised to us all, this simply means that we have to enjoy our living energy since we have way of knowing what fate will bring us; nor when we will be called, and our final number is up in the lottery of life. Though there are many who greatly fear dying it is undeniably the final point in the blueprint of this our Earthly life, and for many the start of the journey that will release our soul for whatever we choose will come next.

Fear of Spirit is the fear of the unknown, and yet given the chance I would rather face fears than to live in the shadow of indecision and the unknown. I cannot forcibly prescribe to assure others, and to tell them that the continuity of life regenerates; but if you want a future in which you can feature then there has to be some change, some direction and faith in the belief that you have an option. The Alpha Omega of the birth death syndrome we all can inspire to, as it brings with it a release of power that manifests here on the Planet.

For those who fear communication with dead people, I have to understand that I find this a very natural reaction, that it may also and unwittingly put the fear of God into someone. The reversal of fear finally will come to those as they find themselves in another dimension after death, and there are, temptingly visible, loved ones down there on Earth whom they wish to call out to. Oh dear! Though communication can be set up quite easily, silence echoes because, they are scared of being a presence of death, and sadly, for them fear has won yet again!

Kenny, I know that you have said that it isn’t wrong to ask for the money that you deserve. I can see that I may have to return to the UK to live because it is hard to make a living here these days. I feel that I am running away but Spain maybe isn’t a part of my life right now. Amy H. Amy, so many have already returned to the UK. It is true that it is hard to make a living, and there comes a time to make a decision and to move on when our lives are compromised.

You are not running away, but you are looking for a better quality of life, which is ironically what many of us came here to Spain for in the first place. The flattening of the Euro and the lack of employment and entitlement has forced many to buy a one way ticket. It certainly isn’t wrong to ask for anything that you need, and if this does become your focus, and you do want to stay…then go for it. I feel from your email that you will be happy and blessed wherever you are, but why not ask Spirit to show you a way forward, wherever that may be? God bless you!

By Keith Nicol ALGORFA IS hosting a very special Motorcycle Rally next weekend, all in aid of a very good cause. The Association Espiritu Solidario are an association of Motorcyclists from Madrid.

They were formed by a group of like minded bikers to organise and collaborate with events to help raise funds for all causes, especially families with sick children.

They are holding a Motorcycle Rally and other events on 6th to the 8th September in Algorfa to help an 18 month old girl, Valentina, who has a brain tumour and different types of chemotherapy have been ineffective. Her only hope is to go to America and because time is of the essence for her, this is a very urgent fund raising event, to be able to send her there so hopefully you’ll be

able to go along to this worthy cause.

Over next weekend there will be a series of activities in the municipality of Algorfa in order to help Valentina. The meeting, organized by the association ‘Aventura Solidaria Torrevieja’ and in collaboration with ‘Custom Espíritu Solidario’ and aims to raise financial support for the young Valentina and her family, while performing different events from musical activities, dining and sports, including a padel tournament. During the weekend there will be leisure activities

such as concerts from Baqueta, Flaming Dolls, Viento de Levante, Fran Navarro and performances from Algorfa Dance, body paint parade by Pamobi hairdressing academy and the young Lumaky.

During the weekend there will be a solidarity paddle tournament in the municipality and in addition there will be free camping area, stalls, a tapas route, sweepstakes and other games and entertainment. It is the desire of the organizers and the Valentina family to invite all interested persons to enjoy these activities while other events are being finalized and will soon be available complete information.

A little Snow Business

By Keith Nicol SEPTEMBER IS just around the corner, which means that it must be time to start thinking about Pantomime. Christmas is but four months away and so the Rojales Pantomime Group are just about to start rehearsals for their next pantomime; ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The first rehearsal takes place at the Quesada Culture Centre on Tuesday 3rd September at 2.00pm in the Salon.

Following on from last year’s successful production of Dick Whittington, Snow White follows the traditional and much loved tale based on the Walt Disney classic. Written by Barry Cox in a pantomime style, and containing all the usual characters and routines to ensure audience involvement, Snow White contains elements of slapstick along with tuneful singalong and speciality dance routines.

The Panto group is urgently seeking members of the public who

would be interested in joining them for Chorus work. Barry Cox and Christine Smith, the show’s directors, are urging people to come forward and join the court in the royal palace, for a bit of good, old time fun. “We want people to join us at court and make this our best production yet” said Christine. Barry added “Come along and join us. After all, there’s no business like Snow business and you’ll have fun as well as raising money for local worthy causes.”

Snow White will be performed at the music school in early January 2014. The group will be rehearsing every Tuesday and Friday from 2,00pm until 5,00pm at the cultural centre in Quesada. Vauxhall Astra GTC Turbo SRi TODAY, IT seems that straight lines are frowned upon in car design.

An advocate of this trend is the Vauxhall Astra, which started life as little more than a box more than 30 years ago. Introduced in 1979 over time the angular hatchback developed into a curvaceous beauty as witnessed when the sixth generation was launched in 2009.

Due to its age many of us will undoubtedly have come into contact with an Astra. For instance, when I was growing up my family had a booted version, the Vauxhall Belmont and I recall it had a poor three speed auto gearbox and an embarrassing performance, if you could call it that. Friends’ parents had standard hatchback Astras and often mentioned their reliability and the fact they were good workhorses. One of them had a brown example and was proud of it. Others, with more cash, owned the sportier more tasteful black or red GTE versions, typically as powerful second cars.

The Astra has evolved and as I’m presented with the GTC Turbo SRi, it is a pleasing package. This is the modern equivalent of the old GTE with sweeping curves and bright red paintwork commanding attention as it sits in the car park. It is a supremely sporty

car and its slightly protruding rear haunches help it look the part and allude to great performance.

In fact this increases expectations that it is at least fitted with a pokey 2-litre petrol engine. However, to my surprise there’s a modest 1.6-litre 16-valve unit under the bonnet. But then you learn that Vauxhall has fiddled with it to produce 177bhp.

It takes just eight seconds for this hot hatch/ coupe to reach 60mph from standstill and its top speed exceeds 130mph. This punchy performance allows me to safely overtake a car and a slow moving lorry as I move away from a roundabout, up a hill. In these days of high fuel prices it will return over 35mpg even with enthusiastic driving.

Its smooth six speed manual box and excellent

driving position help ensure that this Vauxhall delivers an enjoyable driving experience time and time again.

With its comfortable cabin and leather seats, driver and passengers are sure to arrive relaxed and invigorated at the end of a journey. The driver’s seat is particularly comfortable with an excellent lumbar support, making driving a pleasurable experience for someone with a temperamental back, like me. The front seats are even heated - a really useful feature on a cold morning. But the driver has to really stretch back to reach the seatbelt. It can be frustrating Noel’s world of golf

AT THIS time of the year in particular the greens on our local golf courses are at their most vulnerable, not only from the sun but also irresponsible golfers who fail to follow one of the most important parts of the code of etiquette in golf: repairing a pitch mark on the green.

One of the most frustrating things for green keepers and keen golfers everywhere is the need to deal with damage caused to the surface of a green by golf pitch marks. Well, actually, it isn’t the damage that’s frustrating - this damage is inevitable with golf balls landing on soft surfaces. What’s frustrating is when golfers are far too lazy to repair those golf pitch marks resulting in damage to the greens and impacting on the smoothness of the putting surface.

This is not rocket science but good golf etiquette.

All golfers have to do is bend over and stick your pitchfork in the ground a few times, then tap the mound down with the bottom of your putter or other club. If you do not have a pitchfork, a golf tee more than adequately repairs the damage done. It really isn’t that difficult!

HOW TO REPAIR A PITCHMARK ON A GREEN A pitch mark only takes a few seconds to fix correctly. However, a pitch mark repaired incorrectly takes over three weeks to heal. Please study the attached picture on how to correctly repair pitch marks. Correct repair will help protect the grass root system and benefit all visitors to the course .The long and short of it is this: An un-repaired golf pitch mark leaves ugly dead spots on the green – and greens are expensive to maintain. An un-repaired golf pitch mark results in golf putts not running smooth due to bumpy putting surfaces caused by the indentation left by golf shots.

THE CELTIC Manor Wales Open this weekend sees the start of the race for a 2014 Ryder Cup place in the victorious European team tasked with defending the trophy at Gleneagles in September 2014.

The spine of the European team is strong but there will certainly be a number of young players vying for a place amongst Europe’s elite. We are lucky in Europe at this moment in time as we see a wealth of young talent coming through and winning on tour. Last weekend’s winner Tommy Fleetwood is one who will surely make it. Another perhaps will be Thorbjorn Olesen who we saw challenge at The Masters in April and went off the scene a little after he decided to change his natural shot shape of a draw for a fade; thankfully he saw the light early and has decided to leave things as they were.

Paul McGinley is Europe’s captain this time around and he will have three wild card picks which will give him a bit of leeway should one or two of our big names not make it for some reason.

It is hard to believe that the selection process is upon us again but it does now make sure we some more of our superstars having to play in Europe if they want to gain automatic selection.

Torrevieja’s World Champion

WORLD ROWING Champion, Real Club Nautico Torrevieja’s Lars Gumprecht showed off his gold medal on Monday.

By Keith Nicol Lars was accompanied by Mayor Eduardo Dolon, President of the Real Club Nautico de Torrevieja (RCNT), Germán Soler and Torrevieja’s Councillor for Sport, Luis Maria Pizana to welcome him back from his victory at the World Rowing champion de Mar, in the waters of Helsingborg (Sweden). Lars, who was accompanied by his coach, Miguel Angel Sanchez Valero, thanked his club and the support from fellow RCNT athletes, and highlighted the strength and dedication needed for the sport, having to prepare for more than six months, seven days a week to achieve this important victory.

Eduardo Dolon noted that Lars is a clear example of perseverance and hard work and congratulated one and all from RCNT for their historical support to the sport of rowing, through which Torrevieja has many champions both nationally and internationally in many different age groups and both sexes.

Lars won his gold medal in the CM1x, with a time of 30:55, as the fastest competitor to complete the 6,000 meters course.

NEVER HAS a truer word been spoken as the turns at the Cartagena Oval separated the men from the boys at the stock car racing last Saturday. With twelve races, a host of winners, a couple of retirements and a lost wheel, the nonstop action kept the crowd on their feet as they enjoyed an evening of real family entertainment.

Starting the night were the ‘newbie’ drivers and after getting to grips with the character of the track, it was go, go, go and the first of their five races was on, setting the pace for the rest of the night and a win for Jason Rennison. Jason went on to win the 5th race, with ‘Elvis’ and Danny Harper securing a victory in the second and third.

Sadly, owing to a spin out, the 4th race was a DNF. With the title of Rookie Rod driver being closely contended between Caroline Capel (no.46) and Paul Drewett (no. 55), the action on the track was unmissable. Clocking up some brave overtakes and a couple of wins each, there is still nothing to separate these two talented drivers and the battle continues.

If that wasn’t enough driver action, the Lightning Rods further entertained with a wheel-to-wheel battle between Nick Kelly (no 48) and Dave Belcher (no 8) for a full 15 laps and that was despite ‘Bristol Bob’ (no.32) losing a wheel!

With ‘Belchie’ producing impressive defensive tactics and Nick being all over his tail, the crowd were rewarded with a heart-stopping final race.

NOW WE are in the ‘close season’ so to speak, there is still work to be done. This is specifically a work party at Guardamar.

There are 24 permanently cut out and maintained pegs. These are looked after by 4 local clubs, who all have ownership of six pegs to keep the venue fishable. So if you receive a call in the next week or so please support the efforts needed. Worse case, if our six pegs are not maintained then on the 1st match of the new season 2013/2014 which is on 4th September, the draw will be at the normal time but the first hour will be a work party before the match can commence. The match will be 10am to 4pm. The AGM will be held 22nd September starting at 10am at Serasins bar La Marina.

Subs are due on 1st August and must be paid prior to the AGM. Failure to do so will result in the rejoining fee having to be paid. Subs can be paid to any committee member.

With the new season starting 4th September, now is the time to join and have a complete fishing season either for matches or pleasure.

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS: SUPPLIED BY TERRY SCREEN We fished the 10th and final match of the Summer Series at Nancy’s on 20th August.

The match was transferred from the Embalsa de Beniarres due to the high water level, and the road down to the lake is dangerous and unsafe due to water washing the road away causing subsidence.

The water at Nancy’s was alive with big Mullet but they were reluctant to feed on anything. The sluices are still putting in a fair amount of water, which is helping to keep the water oxygenated, and that means no dead fish about.

The water is still fishing reasonably well with maggot and corn the bait of the day.

ANGLERS TOGETHER THE OBJECTIVE of Anglers Together was to introduce anglers to each other who otherwise had no one to fish with or didn’t know where to fish.

It was successful in bringing together many anglers who established friendships and which continue to this day.

THE TRANSFER window slams shut at midnight on Monday and there’ll be quite a few managers anxiously counting down the seconds. Every offseason seems to feature at least one ‘summerlong saga’ but this year there’s been loads on the go! Wayne Rooney kicked things off at the end of the last campaign by, allegedly, handing in a transfer request and doing little publicly to dispel the theory that he wanted out of Old Trafford. Luis Suarez was next up, telling anyone who’d listen and offering every possible excuse under the sun as a reason for why he should quit Liverpool. Fortunately for the credibility of football, their clubs stood strong and both players appear to be staying put.

Neither striker was an angel throughout their respective sagas but at least they didn’t resort to the lowest of the low – going on strike. That appears to be the route that Yohan Cabaye and Gareth Bale have gone down so, for the good of the game, I hope that Newcastle and Spurs take a leaf out of Man United and Liverpool’s book and stand firm. For a player to earn more money in a week than most earn in a year and yet ‘down tools’ in a childlike strop to get what they want is nothing short of disgusting!

Their managers’ first reaction I’m sure was ‘you’re not going anywhere and you’ll rot in the reserves until you realise that!’ Unfortunately however, whether we like it or not, football is also a business these days and the money men won’t allow an ‘asset’ to depreciate whilst sitting in the stands so, as frustrating as it is for us fans, don’t be surprised if player power prevails and Yohan and Gareth’s antics do actually bear fruit.

FC Torry news TORRY RETURNED to the Vicente Garcia to play their first league game of the season against La Nucia on the vastly improved playing surface which has had extensive work carried out on it over the last 6 weeks or so. Torry lined up with no less than 8 new players in the team. The game was entertaining with Torry creating more chances but neither side managed to find the back of the net and the game ended goalless. Eric and Alberto had great chances to break the deadlock but both failed to beat the La Nucia keeper. This weekend Torry travel up north to play Llosa who were shock winners at Castellon last weekend. Let’s hope Torry get at least a share of the spoils.
