A TOTAL of 75 qualified lifeguards served on the beaches of Torrevieja in high season this summer, with 44 in attendance either side of the busy July and August period. Statistical data for the 2013 summer season, regarding action taken by the Lifesaving Service, Surveillance and Response has just been released by Torrevieja’s Town Hall. While not an emergency service, the three disabled bathing platforms were very well received and in high demand throughout the summer not only for residents and tourists of Torrevieja, but also for disabled people in other nearby locations that do not have Adapted Bathroom Points. In total, 558 people used the adapted system with the most popular zone being Playa de Los Locos, with 226 users. Another feature of this special service is the free transport from the persons house or residence to the beach, which this year accounted for a total of 228 disabled people able to go to these three Torrevejenses beaches. Regarding the traditional duties performed by the Red Cross, they performed 215 sea-res-

cue missions. Of these, 187 were rescues by lifeguards for bathers out swimming who found themselves in difficulties and 28 swept out to sea on a floating object, such a lilo or swim ring. Regarding the Assistance and Social Actions for the public, there were a total of 1,992 action, with the major work being the distribution of special bracelets to 1,003 plus a further 153 actions of searching for ‘lost’ children, who where not wearing the children’s bracelet. Regarding Support interventions made by the Red Cross Service, there were 66 cases of urgent ambulance transfer, and 40 emergency ambulance services without transfer to the hospital or clinic. Sadly, during the summer 2013, two people died on Torrevieja beaches. Torrevieja’s Councillor for Beaches, Francisco Moreno reported that the Red Cross were involved in 3,791 calls to action of which 1,586 were slightly injured, 825 with jellyfish stings, 254 fish incidents, 202 insect bites, 92 rock injuries, 213 with minor bruises, 100 multiple allergies, 51 fainting and a further 17 suffering from sunstroke, heatstroke or dehydration.
