Breast Cancer Awareness Day THE SKY was filled by thousands of Pink Ballons along the coast last week to mark Breast Cancer Awareness day. The first event took place in Torrevieja’s main square on Friday, in the presence of Mayor Eduardo Dolon and councillors, organised by Afecancer in collaboration with Quiron Hospital (formally St. Jamie) in Torrevieja. On Saturday, Maria and the Pink Ladies held a fund raising event at Zenia Boulevard, where they raised a total of 4163.50€ for the AECC early detection program.
THE SUPREME Court has upheld the sentence of three years in prison for the for committing ‘falsehood and prevarication’ in awarding the contract for garbage collection, valued at 97.8 million euros, to a ‘preferred’ company rather than putting it our to tender correctly. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal filed by the former regional deputy of the PP, which was discussed at a hearing earlier this month October, in which the prosecutor also requested confirmation of the sentence. Hernandez Mateo was sentenced in November 2012 by the High Court of Valencia to three years in prison and seven in disqualification. Following the conviction, the former mayor resigned his seat in the Valencian Parliament. According to the sentence, the former mayor manipulated the bidding process which was “arbitrary and prejudicial to the public interest” and to the other companies who partook in the contest. The resolution condemned Mateo to also pay a fine of 10,500 euros and indemnify the council with another 12,000 euros! Hernandez Mateo,
besides signing resolutions, “manipulated” the will of various municipal bodies that participated in the bidding process to “circumvent” the opposition of technicians and get the contract be awarded to Necso, said the conviction. Whether or not Mateo will have his sentence suspended, since it’s a first offence and he is approaching 70, has yet to be decided.
