Schools strike against Wert Law

More than 500 protest about educational cuts in Torrevieja with hundreds of thousands protesting nationally

by Keith Nicol THROUGHOUT SPAIN secondary schools staged a three-day strike to protest against the Wert Law, which has caused major upset over the past few years. Although the Torrevieja Town Hall does not have a say in the educational decisions set down by National or Regional governments, school buildings, staffing or budgets, Town Halls took the brunt of protests throughout the country. In Torrevieja, more than 500 parents, students, teachers and opposition politicians made their presence felt with a peaceful demonstration, in what is fast becoming one of the most unpopular actions being pushed through by the Na-

tional PP Government and which ultimately could see the PP losing power in 2015. The Spanish education system has been slowly sliding down the European league tables in recent years and earlier this month, the Plataforma Estatal por la Escuela Pública (State Platform for Public Education), an umbrella group of trade unions and civil society organisations, called for this general education strike. The main points of contention about the Wert Law is over an increase in pupil-teacher ratios, working hours, job losses, lack of temporary cover plus what they term “savage budget cuts” in such essential areas as teacher training. These are just a few of the grievances cited.

Over the last three academic years, Spain has seen cuts to school and university budgets of over 6.4 billion euros with public spending only accounting for 3.9 percent of the 20122013 budget spent on education based on Spain’s GNP. Student failure rates in Valencia schools now stand at an atrocious 30% with some schools having a failure rate of more than 60%. This puts additional pressure on the educational system as a ‘year’ is forced to repeat primarily due to poor teaching training, lack of established and agreed marking standards, lack of technology in the classroom and especially a shortage of coverage should teachers be absent, for whatever reason.
