THE CRASH involved a Costa Azul School Bus, that services Colegio del Pilar de la Horadada. The car was completely destroyed while the bus ended up on its side after the collision. The accident happened beside Torrevieja’s Cemetery and close to the Desalination plant in almost the same place where another accident took lives back in 2005. The crash occurred around 2.40pm and led to delays of up to an hour for traffic entering the N332 from Punta Prima and around the Hospital intersection with the N332. Apparently, the school bus was travelling towards Cartagena, without passengers, with only the driver and two female staff onboard. The head on collision killed the 40-year-old fe-
male driver instantly while her two-year-old daughter later passed away in Torrevieja hospital about two hours later, at 4.35pm. The deceased driver was of Czechoslovakian origin. In the same accident, the bus driver suffered minor injuries and the two other people were taken to Torrevieja hospital with minor injuries. After the accident, numerous police vehicles, Guardia Civil, Protection Civil, Fire and several ambulances attended the crash site, mounting an operation that closed the N332 to traffic in both directions. While not an accident black spot, local car groups have been calling for the road to be widened and a barrier system installed along this stretch of road for over a decade. Continued on page 8
