Emiliano Casal defends his lightweight belt

THEY ARRIVED in La Nucia for a two week break on 27th March to find the locks had been changed, a bank ‘for sale’ placard outside – and all the contents cleared out.

It is understood the mistake occurred in a Villajoyosa courtroom where Solvia – a real estate arm of a Spanish bank – had obtained an order to take back a property in the town.

Unfortunately, it was the address of the Etherington’s home that was somehow included in the papers and a catalogue of errors was compounded with the seizure of personal pos-

sessions left in the villa by the Brighton couple.

The couple arrived “trembling” at the offices of Express Legal Cafe Solicitors in La Nucia in a bid to discover what happened. And the legal firm’s Sandra Wolfe explained: “Obviously they were incredibly upset. They arrived on holiday in La Nucia, went to their property and found they could not get in because the locks had been changed and saw the bank’s placard outside.

“They felt they had been raped because someone had invaded their private space. Just imagine the scene, they were incredibly emotional.”

Community unites over animal cruelty

Seven month old kitten Oso

by Keith Nicol A ROJALES resident was sickened to her core this week, when she discovered the mutilated body of her pet kitten, seven-month-old ‘Oso’, had been dumped on her doorstep. Oso had been mutilated, disfigured and killed with the equivalent of a garden hoe, slicing off the kitten’s feet and cutting its throat, before being unceremoniously left for the owner to find, in an act of animal cruelty not seen before for a long time, in the region.

This Sunday, April 13th, a demonstration to show solidarity to the cat owner and pet owners everywhere, will be held in Rojales. This is a legal demonstration with the support of the Town Hall that has been

organised by the Protectora de Animales and Plantas in Alicante, plus other group. It takes place from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, close to the bridge where the weekly market is held, close to Mercadona.

You will also be able to spot him easily on Sunday as he will be wearing a red body warmer. Raul Merida of the Protectora and other members of the association will also be present and showing their support.

Torrevieja feels the motion

By Keith Nicol MINUTES BEFORE Real Madrid and Chelsea were about to kick off in their respective quarter final Champions League games, at 8.42pm an earthquake of magnitude 1.7 degrees was felt in Torrevieja. To those not wrapped up in preparing for kick of or other activities, the quake sounded like a loud ‘thud’ that was noticeable to the entire population. The earthquake epicentre was pinpointed to the west of Torrevieja at 37.9 0.69 latitude and longitude, just offshore in the Mediterranean. The tremor lasted about six seconds and was noticeable because of its low intensity however it did not cause any damage.

The quest for quality in tourism

More than 140 local businesses attended

by Keith Nicol THE CDT in Torrevieja attracted a full house of over 140 professionals from different services centres, companies and businesses, to discover first hand what is required of each and everyone who strives to be part of Torrevieja’s quality tourism program.

This inaugural conference was hosted by Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, Regional Secretary of Tourism of the Generalitat Valenciana, Daniel Marcus, Provincial Deputy Tourism, Joaquín Albaladejo and Torrevieja’s Councillor for Tourism, Luis María Pizana.

The four presented details of what was required to reach the status of a Comprehensive System for Quality in Destination (SCTE). José Luis Wagner, Head of the Innovation and Quality Tourism Studies of the Valencian Agency of Tourism, along with Lidia Rodríguez Pérez and María Socorro Palos, who are responsible for the implementation of this system in Torrevieja, explained in detail the purpose, benefits and the formal requirements for membership plus how those present could participate.

The main objective of this system is to provide a quality of service that’s consistent throughout all services and businesses, both in tourism enterprises and public administration services offered to tourists. SICTED involves the participation of all aspects that make for

a successful tourist destination including accommodation, catering, cultural and leisure activities, service, tours, beaches, trade and commerce, security services and street cleaning, covering up to 31 different trades.

This project ‘Quality as a Tourist destination’, is promoted by the Tourism Institute of Spain and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces. As for the benefits to business, these are based upon improving internal management, an increase in the knowledge and qualification of the team and to participate with local government, in improving the quality of service of the destination. José Luis Wagner highlighted the importance of linking tourism products with this distinctive quality award, as Companies included shall benefit by having their image boosted by this mark of quality.

Over 13,000 use Torrevieja’s airport bus

Decked out in new graphics, that promote the city, the bus service has steadily grown in popularity during the first quarter of 2014 with an increase of 28.8 % over the same period of 2013.

The International Auditorium hosts Youth Expo 2014

by Keith Nicol THE THIRD edition of Torrevieja’s Youth fair opened yesterday, Thursday and continues today inside the foyer of Torrevieja’s International Auditorium. The event brings together a total of 48 educational institutions and companies and attracts hundreds of students from the entire Vega Baja, to discover more about educational and employment options for their future. Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, along with Councillors for Youth and Education, Rosario Martínez Chazarra plus José Antonio Sánchez from Employment and Development, attended the event on Thursday.

The Departments of Youth, Education and Employment, with the cooperation and participation of other non-profit entities, took over the organisation of the Expo from an idea first put forward by the local broadcast team from Viva TV. The fundamental purpose of the Expo is twofold: on the one hand it aims to be a meeting place for information on training and employment and for those wishing to undertake further study or training as an essential step for a quality job, and secondly, to present the institutions and resources for further education.

Being an Expo, booths have been set up to provide a meeting point for companies requiring staff and young jobseekers and includes collaboration with other entities such as

business companies, associations, universities, vocational training institutes, health centres, municipal schools, ADL, IVAJ and all those who work in the program, in addition to holding workshops, lectures and exhibitions of youth associations. The priority target group are those from 16, all the way to age 35, from Torrevieja and neighbouring municipalities. According to the Department of Census and Statistics of the City of Torrevieja to March 2014, this target audience amounts to about 23,000 people.

Today’s activities for Friday April 11th start with the doors opening at 9:00am, followed by various presentation from10:00am including presentations from Torrevieja schools, IES Workshops in Art, an Exhibition from the MuLast nicipal School of Sport and Culture and many others. Lands of Sea and Salt Exhibition

By Keith Nicol TONIGHT, FRIDAY April 11th at 7.30pm, a new exhibition will be opened in the Vista Alegre Exhibion Centre called ‘Tierras y Mares de Sal’. Admission to the exhibition ‘Land and Sea and Salt’ is free and will remain open until Sunday 18th May. The exhibition features different panels showing the evolution of salt from antiquity to the present day, as well as its different uses, as salt for food, seasoning, fish packing, packets of salt, bags of salt, banknotes, stamps, stocks from salt companies, postcards, prints, books and publications about salt. In fact, everything to do with salt and how it is used, is covered.

Emiliano makes boxing history BOXING HISTORY was made in Torrevieja on Friday night Torrevejense local boxer Emiliano Casal retained his Spanish Lightweight belt with a fifth round TKO.

by Keith Nicol Emiliano dominated the fight in an evening of seven contests held in the ‘Cecilio Gallego Pavillion’. Casal was defending his title against disputed title contender Andoni Alonso, who replaced original contender King Daluz.

From the opening bell, Casal took command of the centre of the ring using his long reach to establish his position. In the second round, Casal began putting his combinations together causing Alonso to take his

first eight count from Majorcan referee Oliver Palomo and at 1:10 of the fifth round, the referee declared a TKO against Alonso giving Casal his second defence of his title.

Along with five, three round Amateur fights, there was another professional bout at heavyweight between local boxer Magomed Azuev ‘Moja’, who won with a second round TKO against Slovakian opponent Gabriel Jazsai.

Ikea biggest ever losses in Spain

His body was washed up on an Alicante beach last week and later formerly identified by Spanish authorities. Police believe it was a gangland killing.

The 25-year-old fled to Javea last October and he was last seen on 24th January when he was stopped in a friend’s car.

He was handcuffed and kidnapped by men posing as Spanish police officers.

In an appeal by Francis’ parents Carl and Janet and Merseyside Police last month, it was said he fled the UK ahead of being sentenced in Milton Keynes for an assault committed in 2012 at a Swedish House Mafia music concert.

However, in an earlier private appeal Mrs Brannan said ‘Franny’ had fled after being accused of stealing money in Liverpool.

THE RECESSION in Spain has taken its toll on the Swedish furniture giant Ikea, with sales falling 6% in the 2013 fiscal year, the largest decline since the company established in Spain in 1996. Eleven stores are now operating on mainland Spain. Sales grew only in Barcelona. The biggest losses suffered by IKEA Ibérica were in La Coruña (-15.3% to €50.9 million), Asturias (-12.6% to €39.1 million), Jerez (-12.3% to €37 million) and Seville (-12% to €73 million). The biggest drop in turnover occurred in furniture and restaurants: 6.3% to €1,070.7 million.

Murder in Estepona The man is named as Andrew Bush

by Jan Gamm MILLIONAIRE JEWELLER 48-year-old Andrew Bush was found dead at his luxury Estepona home near the New Golden Mile at 2.30am on Saturday following a frantic 112 call from his new girlfriend, 20-year-old Maria Korotaeva.

Bush had been shot twice in the head. Bush’s ex-girlfriend, 24-year-old Slovakian model Mayka Kukocova, allegedly hid in the millionaire’s house, having let herself in with a set of keys she had not returned. According to a statement from Maria Korotaeva, Kukocova

confronted them as they returned from a brief holiday. Korotaeva waited outside the villa but due to the security system could not get back in after Kukocova fled in a Hummer parked outside. Police found Bush some time later: he had been shot twice in the head. Mayka Kukocova is now in custody after handing herself in at a local police station in her home town, Nova Bosaca in Slovakia, more than 3,000km from the crime scene. She will shortly be extradited to Spain. Bush owned a pawn shop; health studio; limousine rental and jewellery store in his home town of Bristol.

It would never happen in England!

WHY DO owners and their dogs in Spain behave in ways they never would in England and assume that it is okay to do so?

ON VISITING a local bar last week I and other waiting customers were rudely interrupted by a lady barging to the front and demanding a bowl of water for her dog. To my amazement the waitress stopped serving, went outside to retrieve a dog bowl from the floor, plonked it on the bar to fill with water and take it back outside to the lady - whose dog was now sat on the furniture with its front paws on the table!

Luckily by this time another waitress had started serving, hopefully one who had washed her hands!

Who knows where those paws have been?! Staff should wash their hands after touching any dog or utensils used for dogs before they serve customers - surely this is basic hygiene?

At another table were three ladies with two other dogs, one with her dog on her knee. Each time anyone passed the dogs barked continually, made worse by the owners’ shouting. Some customers left or moved to other tables. After a while one lady stood up and went inside, reappearing with plates of food! Obviously the chef!

No English bar would allow anything so unhygienic.

Later on in the week a local shopkeeper was having trouble trying to make a lady keep her dog outside as well as deal with a long queue of customers. The dog was on an extendable lead and kept running in and out. The owner was extremely rude when she was asked to take the dog out.

There are laws about dogs in Spain and it’s about time owners started to think about how it might affect other people, especially businesses, if an inspector came along at that particular time. The dogs are not to blame.

Business owners should not feel afraid to ask that dogs are looked after properly for fear of offending the owners. Customers are probably lost by letting them get away with it.

For those readers who might write in thinking my opinion is petty, perhaps one day your dinner will be full of dog hair from the chef’s apron or your clothes covered with hair from sitting on a restaurant chair.

Something wrong with this picture

RECENTLY I read about EU immigration policies and feel I must voice my concerns which likely mirror those of many fellow readers. The EU immigration policy is allowing thousands of Romanians into the UK for higher paying jobs than their home country, and some coming to take advantage of the Britain’s generous welfare system. It seems many come to get and not to contribute, take and give nothing in return. Here I am - feed me!

It concerns me that thousands of East Europeans flooding the UK are dragging down wages for British citizens, altering the economy and very fabric of British society. It concerns me because here on the Costa Blanca, we see Eastern Europeans taking jobs away from Spanish people while the unemployment rate in Spain is a shocking 26%.

We were recently in a Chinese shop and could not help noticing those working there were young Chinese people or Romanians but no Spanish.

We recently went to an electronic shop to purchase a laptop, and the salesperson was Romanian. Yesterday we stopped at a bar for a coffee, and an East European lady was the waitress.

Something is wrong with this picture. Such EU immigration policies are damaging the economy. Everything looks upside down, unemployment is high and government leaders seem oblivious.

Thankyou so much EARLY MORNING on 17th March in Guardamar, while asking a lady the way to the post office, I fell to the pavement with a force to my hip. I was unable to get up or move. Some kind people came to my aid, one placing his white, soft puffer jacket under my head and someone else ringing for the police and ambulance. I wish to thank you very much and I also wish to thank the ambulance service for getting me to Torrevieja Hospital, and the medical personnel who looked after me during my 7 days stay in Torrevieja Hospital. To the doctor, Angel David Gonzalez Perez, who performed my prosthesis full hip replacement, thank you very much. Also thank you to those involved with my after care at La Marina Health Centre.

What’s a black and white telly grandpa?

PREVIOUSLY ON Watts in Britain: In January it was a mad dash to Derby to meet my girlfriend’s new grandson; in February it was a mad dash to Pevensey Bay to welcome my daughter’s new baby and next week it’s going to be a mad dash back to Sussex to see my son and daughter-in-law’s just born baby. Three boys in four months – we’re well on our way to a football team.

I’m thinking it’ll be an expensive Christmas this year!

Now, when I wer-a-lad my granddad used to tell me about the man who came along his road to operate the gas street-lights. Up until he was six years old, another man would walk in front of cars with a red warning flag (something they might like to reintroduce into traffic-mad-Tamworth). Things were hugely different between his and mine childhood experiences. He’d say, “And we didn’t have telly then lad, or radio…” I was aghast, how on earth did you watch The Wooden-tops? He’d laugh, “No Wooden-tops back then.” Entertainment was going along to see the music hall acts. Queen Victoria was on the throne and she wasn’t much amused. So what will I say about ‘my day’ to the new Baby Watts (as yet unnamed) when he is a lad? Will our childhood experiences be as hugely different as me and my granddads? Maybe not so much but I guess they will a tad.

“Well lad,” I’ll say, “when I wer-a-lad I remember them delivering our first telly. It took two blokes, yes

two, to carry it in. It weighed a ton and it was set in a huge cabinet - but the screen was smaller than your i-tab…” Na, getaway gramps. Will he believe that there was only one ‘choice’ of channel to watch?

I’ll tell him: “I remember having to go downstairs to Robert Piper’s flat to watch my favourite programme, Four Feather Falls because they were the only family in our street who could get ITV.” We had to wait three weeks (a lifetime to a 4-yr old) to get our ITV tuned aerial. What’s an ITV, gramps?

Will he believe that we went everywhere on a bus?

And that it took two people to operate said bus? And that the driver sat alone in a little cab, while a man inside the bus called a conductor took your fares and rang a bell to set the bus on its way? And that you got on at the back platform which was all open to the elements? Probably not, as he’d realise that would be a flagrant breach of all sane health and safety protocols. I’d grin and say, “We had common sense then lad - but no health and safety. And those buses were blimmin’ cold in winter.”

Please indulge me folks for publishing yet another baby picture: this one shows Baby Watts strapped into his granddad-sponsored car-seat for his first journey home from hospital. I’ll have to tell him that when I first left the hospital on that cold day in January it was in a pram and my grandma had to push it.

Yes, of course all the way home! No car for us back then, lad; in fact there were only two cars in the entire street. “Mind you,” I’ll say, “I’d been in hospital for the customary two weeks lad, not like your new modern fangled single-overnight stay!”

Of course lad, I could just forget all of this nostalgic nonsense and get on with the job in hand: namely the ball-play in the park and ice cream scoffing. Oh and trying to beat David Williams and his grandchildren’s very high pit-pat score…

by Keith Nicol ON SATURDAY morning Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon became an honorary member of the ‘Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal’ awarded to him by the President of the Association, Rod Loveday.

The Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal is involved with supporting the development of the area surrounding Torrevieja’s natural lakes and their regular meeting was also at-

tended by the councillors for the Environment Francisco Moreno, Foreigners, Rosario Martinez and Planning, Javier Montoro.

After the ceremony, volunteers and councillors made a brief visit to the immediate surroundings of the Lagoon accompanied by the Director of the Park, Concepción Torres, who showed the Mayor an example of the new 42 signs, which members of the association are mounting around the area, and that are made from recycled material. There are

two types of signs, such as Park Regulations covering such requirements as keeping dogs on a leash to directional signs and others informing the public of the type of vegetation or bird life they can discover in the area.

The Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal always have a need and a welcome for new members and anyone interested is invited to attend their regular meeting, which happens on the first Saturday of the Month at the information office in La Mata’s natural park.

THE SCANDINAVIAN Academy of Orihuela Costa inaugurated an ecological greenhouse on the school premises on Friday 4th April.

The Scandinavian Academy has more than 50 pupils from Scandinavian countries, teaching in Swedish, Finnish and Spanish.

The school has strong environmental interests - the greenhouse was constructed by pupils and staff with recyclable material. Vegetables and flowers are already growing and the Academy has also instigated the procedure for obtaining the important Swedish Green Flag award, a prestigious symbol of the Academy’s environmental commitments.

Present at the inauguration were more than one hundred children and parents, local Orihuela Costa elected councillor Bob Houliston and members of the CLARO party, including Ragnhild Breivoll, the Executive Committee member responsible for relations with the Scandinavian community in Orihueal Costa.

by Jack Troughton THE GOLD rings and a pendant were left inside Christmas boxes for the children and last week Lucy Rowat took them to be valued by antiques expert Mark Stacey.

Television regular Mark, an antiques dealer and auctioneer, was giving ‘Cash in the Underbuild’ valuations at the Homes Gardens and Lifestyle show at the Diamante Beach hotel in Calpe last week.

And he was happy to cast his eye over Lucy’s haul – valuing rings at between 50€ and 100€ and a pendant at between 50€ and 60€.

Lucy, of Make A Smile, said: “I found this jewellery inside our Christmas boxes and numerous things that people have brought

along to help the children.

“Mark said there are a few worth 100€ because they are 18 carat gold and others worth 50€ - it is very exciting, like winning the lottery.” She added: “We need 320€ a month to buy meat and fish for the eight children living in just one of the EMAUS homes across the region.”

Other initiatives include the webseries ‘Love in B’, directed by Antonio Hernández. Benidorm hotels and self-catering facilities are already approaching ‘standing room only’ in what is tipped to be one of the city’s most successful holiday seasons yet.

Walk for life

CANCER CHARITY ‘Bruised but not Broken’ is staging its second Walk for Life to raise money to offer respite breaks to carers looking after loved ones suffering a terminal illness.

The event takes place on the seafront between El Campello and Muchavista beaches on Sunday 4th May. It is a 10km course, although people can complete a shorter 5km or 3km distance.

Lorraine Brown, charity President, said: “Although called a walk, people can run the distance if they prefer, but walking or running, this is not about winning. It is about taking part in support of those who cannot and everyone who enters is a winner by the very fact they care enough to do so.

“We would especially like to see families entering as this is after all, a disease which can affect the family unit as a whole.”

The event is open to everyone of any age and whether they are on one leg, two legs, or those needing wheels. “Everyone is welcome, includ-

ing our four legged friends.”

Bruised but not Broken is a registered charity founded to honour the life of Bec Isaacs who died at the age of 32 in 2010 following a four year battle with cancer. Lorraine said throughout her daughter’s illness, Bec’s main concern was for the people around her and supporting her through her battle.

“It is so often the case that family members become the main carers for those suffering with many kinds of terminal illness and looking after a loved one who is sick is both physically and emotionally draining,” she said. “Sometimes a rest is needed to ‘recharge the batteries’, enabling us to carry on caring to the best of our ability.”

Lorraine added: “And so, with Bec as inspiration, Bruised but not Broken aims to provide respite breaks for the family carers of those affected by this dreadful and all too often deadly disease.

“Please support this event and walk or run yourself a little fitter at the same time.”

Guardamar’s Motor Car Festival

by Keith Nicol TOMORROW, SATURDAY April 12th, Guardamar’s popular annual Fiesta de Motor takes place in the town’s main square in front of the Ayutamiento of Guardamar. The classic and custom car meeting is organised by the Rotary Club of Guardamar and features a host of automobilia plus music, song, dance and side-shows.

The event starts at 10.00am with cars on display until around 2.00pm, although some may in position a little longer. Go Karting for Alpe THE COSTA Blanca Business Battle is a fun event that pits drivers from 15 different businesses, pubs, clubs and sometimes just a team of friends against each other in Go Karts. Each team is composed of five people, each driver hav-

ing the opportunity to get behind the wheel on two occasions for a seven and a half minute session. The main goal for the event is to raise money and awareness for ALPE; a specialist school for people with developmental disabilities in Torrevieja and through the event to also promote positively, joy and collaboration. Eurobowling Spanish Champions The winning Eurobowling Torrevieja squad

by Keith Nicol WHEN ONE mentions bowling in Torrevieja, many may think of players dressed in white, out in sun, rolling bowls gently along a crown green. However, it’s the other category, that of Ten-Pin Bowling that made the news last week as Torrevieja’s men’s team from Eurobowling Torrevieja won the First Division of the Spanish Bowling League and will play in the highest Spanish Division next Season: the División de Honor.

The club was started eight years ago and this is the first time that a Torrevieja team has reached the upper echelons of the Spanish game. To be able to compete at the highest level, the team will be boosted with the addition of Tore Torgersen, the former

World and European Champion, plus one or two possible others, with the fledging team hoping to perform well in their first year at the top.

The new season starts again in September and although with their 135 members Eurobowling Torrevieja is actually the largest club in Spain, they are looking for more players, especially among Torrevieja’s youth, to get involved. Team Captain Kjell Monsen will also be offering free classes to those interested in becoming involved in one of the world’s most popular indoor sports, which today attracts over 100 million bowlers playing in over 90 different countries. The Association “5 continents” start training LAST WEEKEND, on April 5th, the first training session for Torrevieja’s newest team; Five Continents Football Association began. At present they have two teams of different ages from many different countries and are training every Saturday and Sunday. Spain’s Eurovision entry to be sung in English THE ENTERTAINMENT director of TVE, Carlos Mochales, has approved the use of English for Spain’s entry at Eurovision 2014 in Denmark, ‘Dancing in the Rain’, to be sung by Ruth Lorenzo. A debate on whether English should be used was sparked by a critic who suggested that as the contest was an international event therefore the entry should be sung at least in part in Catalan.

However, Mochales has made a decision to respect the original language choice proposed by the writers of the song: Lorenzo herself, Jim Irvin and Julian Emery.

A FIRST of its kind event took place on Sunday at Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre.

Smile raises cash for children’s home

by Keith Nicol Organised by a few students from The Norwegian School in Rojales, about twenty students strutted their stuff interspersed by some excellent entertainers, to provide the couple of hundred people in the audience with an excellent new style of event.

The event was organised at the last minute as a fun, fundraising and awareness event, and the only time available was 1.00pm on Sunday afternoon, so a large audience was not anticipated.

Several students from the school have formed a solidarity group along with other friends, under the name ‘Pink It Together’ with the objective of organising different events for the benefit of the needy. Sunday’s ‘fashion show’ was in aid of the Cancer Charity AECC and supported by Torrevieja’s small and business association Apymeco and the town council. Sunday’s event was also attended by the councillors of ONGs Mamem Mateo and for Foreigners, Rosario Martínez.

Along with models from the school, the show flowed along with the inclusion of local singers Shany Ormiston, Ashley Tweddle, Paul Micheal and Lewis ‘Sound of the suburbs’. This was the first event organised by Pink it Together but they are already looking at other events for cancer charities later in the year.

THE SMILE Charity Group held an afternoon BBQ at Restaurante El Alto La Dolores on Saturday, raising 520€ for the Elche Children’s Care Home. As this was an afternoon event, some of the children from the home were able to enjoy the BBQ and were up dancing to the music provided by the excellent Campoverde Reef Band.

The 1st raffle prize was a 7-night Mediterranean Cruise, donated by Andres, the owner of the Restaurant. Paul and Karen Buckley from Benimar were the lucky winners.

Pensions and Tax SO IN this March’s budget the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced changes and proposed changes to the UK pension system, what he failed to highlight were the tax implications that these changes will bring, we can only wonder why.

FIRSTLY HE proposed that from April 2015 individuals could en-cash all of their UK Private pensions. What he didn’t mention was the tax - 25% can be taken once as a tax free lump sum and

the rest taxed at the applicable income tax rate up to 45%. He expects to raise at least £3billion extra tax from this.

He then made it clear that expatriates will have to decide whether they are either in or out of the UK tax system. So how does the UK government decide you are an expat for tax purposes? It is said it will be someone who is no longer a UK resident and resides and pays taxes in another country.

If you are an expatriate you also may be affected by the following changes: Capital gains tax is to be introduced in the UK in 2015 for non-residents, so if you are an expat and you sell a property in the UK, irrespective as to whether you have been renting it out or not you will have to pay capital gains tax in the UK. It cannot be claimed as a main residence because you are non-resident in the UK. The Chancellor has also started looking at scrapping the UK personal income tax allowance for expats i.e. getting rid of the

£10,000 a year earnings limit before you have to start paying income tax. So any expats drawing pension income in the UK – including the State pension will have to pay tax of at least 20%. This will also be the same for income gained from other sources in the UK by expats.

The Chancellor wants to stop the transfer of final salary pensions and UK government pensions.

There are ways to protect yourself from the above changes especially when it comes to pensions, avoiding the personal allowance tax trap could be as straightforward as switching your UK pension into an offshore Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS). QROPS investors pay income tax on their pension payments based on where they are tax resident, not at UK tax rates.

Sorry to repeat ourselves but it is necessary to remind our readers that to make a Spanish will and to keep it updated is a ‘must’ IF YOU do not have a will, or if it is not in line with the Regulation of the European Union 650/2012 of last year, you need to have a Spanish Will drafted, or reviewed as soon as possible, especially if you own any asset or property in Spain, as: IT IS A COST EFFECTIVE MEANS OF SIMPLIFYING THE HANDLING OF YOUR AFFAIRS Without a Spanish Will no action can be taken in Spain until the Probate of your English estate has been finalised. This can take a very long time and be expensive with official translations of the English Will, its legalisation, etc., which together will cost significantly more than preparing a Spanish Will in the first place. Do not rely upon your English Will or, even worse, English intestacy rules where there is no Will at all, to deal with your Spanish estate.

IN YOUR WILL YOU CAN EXPRESSIVELY APPOINT YOUR NATIONAL LAW TO APPLY TO YOUR SUCCESSION AND WILL Without a Will explicitly specifying the law of your

country of origin, it would be understood that if you live and have your assets in Spain, that Spanish inheritance Law applies to your succession, so at least 2/3 of the estate must go to your children, as per the European Regulation 650/2012.

Under Spanish law you generally have six months to pay IHT following the date of death, failing to do so will result in a surcharge and interest will start to accrue. It is rare for the English probate to be dealt with in time to allow this deadline to be met.

For tax purposes a Spanish Will can be drawn in such a way that it will minimize the Inheritance Tax (IHT), needless to say you have to know how the Spanish IHT works to make your Will really tax efficient.

Sometimes (due to the amount of the estate etc) when an English person passes away there is NO need to get a Probate as long as there is a valid Spanish Will BUT if this person does not have a Spanish Will then normally the Spanish authorities will need to see the Probate before dealing with the Spanish estate.

Hibiscus are a good choice for many gardens WHY HIBISCUS? There are hibiscus for all situations in Spain some of which should be more widely known and promoted by garden centres. They are fairly easy to raise from cuttings and in some cases from seeds if friends already have the plants.

Their flowers are exotic, most garden centres now have a wide range of types and flower colours in stock and as mentioned in the chapter on edible flowers in our book ‘Living Well from Our Mediterranean Garden’ the flowers taste good in salads and make a refreshing infusion.

HARDY VARIETIES The hardiest varieties can survive temperatures well below zero: The deciduous Hibiscus Syriacus varieties that graced my Windsor garden in England: The three white, red throated shrubs in our garden are covered with flowers from June to September. (They were grown from cuttings some twenty years ago when the garden was in its infancy).

Blue, purple and white species grace several public areas of our village.

The tree or ‘spreading bush’ Hibiscus Mutibilis often called ‘Cotton Rose’ as its flowers look like fluffy balls of cotton that start white and change to pink as they mature. The trees are especially impressive when in full flower with a

mix of white; white and pink; and fully pink flowers. Our two trees flower in September through to October.

SOME SEMI HARDY VARIETIES: WITHSTAND A FEW DEGREES OF FROST The elegant specimen flowered Hibiscus Coccineus is a marsh/pond plant originally from what is now Florida and Georgia in the USA. We have several plants raised from seeds growing in pots in the shallow margins of our two ponds: red and white-flowered varieties are available.

Milestones mark memories MONUMENTOUS EVENTS of modern history served as milestones for the memories of Costa Blanca author George Thomas as he recalls his own adventures around the globe.

By Jack Troughton Urged by his family to write down stories of his travels, George sets his memoir against the backdrop of dates that changed the world – including the assassination of JF Kennedy, the Cuban Revolution, Nixon’s tearful resignation following Watergate, the end of the Cold War and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

And while the book is dedicated to his wife Kay, three children and 11 grandchildren, it is also an insight into the different customs of countries, the problems they can cause and how to cope with them.

The title ‘Promise Me You Won’t Go to Beirut!’ was an undertaking George happily gave to his wife before travelling on business to the Middle East – the Lebanon was a warzone at the time.

But naturally things did not quite go to plan. George found himself in the middle of the city and remembers the worrying sound of nearby AK47s being fired as he took a bath. Fortunately, it was just one of those ‘celebrations’ still seen in the region as guns are fired into the air.

The writer, who lives in Javea, explained: “The memoir really came about with the older grandchildren, after hearing some of the tales, suggesting ‘why not write them down?’.”

George has written two fictional thrillers to date, Nemesis in Spain and Nemesis in Asia, and both feature a jet-setting avenging angel. Many of the restaurants, hotels, and locations used in the stories are real places he visited while working or on holiday.

NOVEL “I have written this memoir after two works of fiction and in it readers will find some of the source material for the novels,” said George. “It is amazing how many international events occurred during the time I was travelling. It has helped me fix dates because I didn’t keep any notes.”

In Syria, George was able to visit the country’s cities and rich history but 40 years later much has been destroyed in a bitter civil war. “What I saw has now gone...it is appalling.”

However, now happily living in Spain, he said “It is not an autobiography” but an account of how and why he was infected with the travel bug – and what happened.

Oh what a Fool I nearly was!

What you are about to read is the story behind the story of how, but for a phone call from the lovely Dawn at the RTN office, 15 minutes before the deadline on Wednesday afternoon, I would have fallen for one of the biggest April fool jokes of all time.

Last Tuesday (April 1st) I read with amazement about how two top TV personalities started banging on at each other? … In public? … In an IKEA store in North London? … Yes folks it was those cheeky wee devils Ant and Dec and what a brilliant joke they pulled, a stunt that they managed to keep running long enough time for me to buy it! … Big time!

In case you don’t know the full details of how they did it … here we go. Ant (short one) lay on a bed when they were shopping for shelving units to which Dec (tall one) was overheard saying “This is the last straw, man!” before he shut himself in a bathroom! … A showroom bathroom!! …

Shortly afterwards Ant was seen staring into space in the shop canteen eating meatballs whilst Dec queued alone at the checkout. A company statement read “Ant is furious ... As far as he’s concerned, he’s been betrayed by his best friend and his management team ... He didn’t even like the shelving unit that much,” … great touch!! Then they stirred the pot a bit more with “Dec will buy Ant out of their production company Mitre, and Ant will have sole custody of their pet dog, Beyoncé … love it!! The two guys have held the nations hearts for a long while now, and this latest outrageous stunt they pulled off has only added to their popularity I´m sure.

I´VE ALWAYS loved going to see a live band in concert; however after reading about a Kings of Leon concert a couple of weeks ago in Seattle when a woman was discovered to have measles, wearing a mask now becomes a serious option. 17,000 people were there so that´ll keep the medical team busy for a couple of days. In 2010 the group had to cancel a gig after pigeons pooped on them.

What might have had an impact on this statistic is that Pastor Kevin Swanson of the Reformation Church recently accused the film of trying to turn children gay on his radio show ...

I’LL STICK my neck out and say that there are not many of you out there that have not at one time swished your imaginary Lightsabre as was featured in Star Wars. Toys have been produced the world over of this iconic piece of gadgetry for kids to have fun with, and now writer George Lucas has made a movie clip of how the Lightsaber came about and why they chose such a design.

Warts and all MEDIUMS ARE becoming more popular all over the World, but what concept do people have of what a Medium actually looks like? We are a fairly distinct and general mob of people, but we get the spooky label because so many are terrified of us. Bowel cancer awareness month

SOMEONE DIES from bowel cancer in the UK every thirty minutes. And this shocking statistic is repeated in many countries around the world. Spain has an even higher incidence of bowel cancer than the UK. Yet many deaths from bowel cancer could be prevented. Bowel cancer is treatable when diagnosed at an early stage. But only a tiny amount of cases, around 9%, are caught early.

Routine screening is the best way to catch bowel cancer before it becomes deadly. As April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, now is a good time to ask your doctor for bowel cancer screening.

British GP on the Costa Blanca, Medcare’s Dr Hussain, explains: “Screening can detect bowel cancer even before symptoms appear, and with early treatment prognosis is very good. So we would urge everyone to come forward for regular bowel cancer screening.”

The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme offers screening every two

years to people aged 60 to 69. People over 70 can request screening. But in Spain, too many British expats are missing out on this simple but vital test.

People should also be aware of the early symptoms of the disease and ensure they go to their doctor at the first sign anything is wrong.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Comparisons

WELL, WE’RE still on the subject of adjectives as there are a lot of things to say about them apart from how they agree with nouns as we have already seen.

Another thing we use adjectives for is to make comparisons. For example, in English we say “big” “bigger” “the biggest”; “nice, nicer, the nicest”; “beautiful, more beautiful, the most beautiful”. We call these forms “comparative” and “superlative”.

The comparative compares two things “My dad is bigger than your dad” whereas the superlative compares one thing in relation to all the rest “His dad is the biggest”.

This is very easy in Spanish as we simply place the word más in front of the adjective to form the comparative (comparing two) and el más (masc) or la más (feminine) to form the superlative (one in comparison to all the rest).

Mi papá es más grande que tu papá.

(Notice we use que to translate “than”).

Su papá es el más grande.

“His dad is the biggest”.

Now here is one more thing to learn about adjectives. Spanish has a very interesting way of using them to replace nouns. For example, we can say: el hombre viejo the old man - and

this is perfectly correct - but usually it gets reduced to simply el viejo. (We could translate this as “the old man” or simply: “the old one”).

This works in the same way in the feminine.

La chica guapa – the pretty girl, or simply la guapa (the pretty one). All adjectives work in this way – el gordo (the fat one - masc), la tonta (the silly one – fem), el gracioso (the funny one – masc), la fea (the ugly one – fem).

Of course in Spanish we can identify whether the person is masculine or feminine, whereas this meaning is lost in English. We can also use this to refer to things, of course. ¿Cuál de las cajas quieres? La grande. (Which box do you want? – the big one).

And finally, also related to adjectives, we can now learn the fifth way of saying “the”.

If you remember we have learnt so far that there are masculine, feminine, singular and plural forms – el, la, los and las. The missing form is “lo”. Now lo has several meanings in Spanish, but at the moment we are only looking at when it means “the”. This is how it works, using three examples.

Lo interesante - “the interesting thing” Lo difícil - “the difficult thing” Lo curioso - “the curious thing” What can we say about these expressions?

Well, interesante, difícil and curioso are all adjectives. However, they are not describing anything in particular. We are not saying “the interesting book”, “the difficult job”, “the curious idea”. These adjectives are really describing ideas or situations not words that are defined as masculine or feminine. In this case, the word for “the” cannot be el or la but is a neutral “the” – lo. I’ll finish with a sentence for you to translate into English which hopefully illustrates some of what we’ve learnt.

Los dos hijos, el guapo y el feo, van a visitar a su familia este verano. Lo triste es que el guapo es más popular que el feo, aunque el feo es mucho más simpático, y es el más generoso de toda la familia. Lo más curioso de todo es que el guapo tiene muchos más amigos que el feo, pero el feo es el más feliz.

Printing problems

HELLO AUNTY: HELP! I have put a new cartridge in my old HP Officejet 5610 printer, as it had run dry and it refuses to print. It has spat out a test sheet (okay), re-aligned itself and gone to sleep again! I have seven prints in the queue but it will not respond.

I use a Lenovo ideapad laptop with a USB cable to the printer (I have tried another cable, but no luck). Any ideas? Thanks in anticipation – Chris.

Aunty says: Method 1: Unplug the USB cable connecting your computer to the printer (it may be easiest to unplug the USB cable from the back of the printer).

Unplug the power cable for the printer.

Turn off your computer (all the way, not just a Restart).

Wait 60 seconds.

Plug the USB cable back into the printer.

Plug the power cable back into the printer.

Turn the computer back on.

When the computer comes back up, check the printer.

METHOD 2: Uninstall the Printer software and reinstall the software.

You may need the HP Officejet 5610 printer software CD to remove the HP software installed on the personal computer to which the product is connected. If you no longer have the CD, go to the Select Software and Drivers page at the HP website. Type in the product number and select the Windows operating system that your PC uses.

Router tip HI AUNTY: A few weeks ago you answered a query regarding a possible router problem when a reader was trying to re-connect to a router after turning their tablet or mobile device off. I had this problem with my iPod Touch. The problem was caused by a security feature introduced by Apple (and presumably other manufacturers) that doesn’t like the default name (SSID) given to a router (i.e. TalkTalk, Netgear etc). I resolved the connection (and re-connection) problem by changing the SSID to a personal name or phrase (don’t use your surname or house name for security reasons as this name is seen when scanning for a WiFi network). Now when I turn my iPod Touch back on it finds my network instantly. I hope this helps. Ray Aunty says: Thanks for the tip!

Skype accounts and payments HELLO AUNTY and team! I just wonder if you might have more success than me… I’ve had Skype for years. At one time I could not get into my account so set up a new one.

The only trouble is they keep taking money out of my bank account but say I’ve no credit. I’ve emailed them a few times and nothing in return can you help me please. Eileen Aunty says: Perhaps your payments are being sent to the account that you could not access?

And not to your new account, hence why it is saying you have no credit on your new account.

If you know which email address your old account was set up on, you can request a new password to try and access that old account: https://login.skype.com/recovery Once in the account you can use it and use the credits in there, and you should also be able to cancel the payments. Failing that, then it is persistent emails to Skype to sort it out.

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio

The first Major of 2014 - and it is wide open THE MASTERS heralds the start of the 2014 Major Season and already there is some drama attached to it.

WITH JUST two weeks to go one of the favourites has withdrawn.

The hope that the earlier retirement for Tiger Woods from the Arnold Palmer Invitational was intended to ensure he was fit and well for the Masters. That has proven to be a vain hope and there is speculation that his back injury may mean that he will make no further appearance until The Open.

One of the other favourites for the event such as Jason Day has an injured thumb. In many sports this would not be a significant hindrance but in golf it can be critical, impacting the backswing and the impact.

Phil Mickelson is also suffering from a pulled muscle which meant that he too pulled out of the Texas Open and headed back to see a specialist. However, his opening round of 68 at Houston demonstrates that the therapy was demonstrably successful.

Hunter Mahan is also having back trouble and although it is not an injury Bubba Watson has some allergy problems which recently have affect his game.

In the Houston Open, just concluded last weekend, Dustin Johnson withdrew after playing 80 holes having produced the worst round of his career.

So what does that mean for the possible outcome of the Masters?

MAYBE IT IS THE YEAR OF THE ROOKIE! Who would you think has a chance of making it on their first appearance? Here are three to look out for 1. Keegan Bradley - at 27 he is a mature player and having won the 2011 PGA Championship on his first year he clearly has the nerves

for the big event.

2. Victor Dubuisson - finished second in the 2014 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship to Jason Day. This match play event ended on the 23rd hole. Clearly demonstrating that this young Frenchman has the ability to stay focussed.

3. Patrick Reed - is still only 23 and when he claimed his third win in eight months at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March, he was pilloried for declaring himself one of the top five golfers in the world. That is one big reason why he is the rookie that should be worth watching. He now has to back that up! His brash claim is not without substance, as since 1990, only Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Sergio García had won three PGA Tour events before the age of 24.

Aside from these new boys there is still hope that one of our favourites will somehow hold it together and deliver on the day.

We all have our personal favourites and so without rewriting the entire list it is impossible to cover them all, but I would suggest that most of us would love to see any of these gents lifting the trophy.

Sergio Garcia - just keep going through the last two days.

Ian Poulter - never lacking in enthusiasm and that is always matched with determination.

Luke Donald - Are his best days now behind him? Could there be one more period of four days when he reproduces that Luke Donald style and quality. If so he could lift his first major trophy.

Having written those down there are now ten other names that should be included. I will enjoy reading your comments about the ones that I should have added.

Campbell - You are looking a bit serious this week. Why is that?

Tony M - There are occasions when certain incidents just remove your sense of humour - at least for a while.

Campbell - Tell me more.

Tony M - Well you know what it is like when you arrive at a location for the first time. It could be anywhere where you are unfamiliar with your surroundings but probably more especially at an airport in a foreign country. You can be confused and you are probably at your most vulnerable for any rogue who intends to take advantage of your temporary loss of focus.

Campbell - I can imagine you had some alternative words instead of “rogue” in mind.

Tony M - You read my thoughts. But this is what happened to a group of lads who arrived here for a mini tournament. As they assembled and arrange transport nobody noticed anything untoward. It was only when they started to load the cases and bags that they noticed one was missing.

Campbell - That must be a terrible sinking feeling and especially in a foreign country.

Tony M - Obviously they retraced their steps and did a thorough search but it was definitely stolen. Anyway the owner of the case was quite calm about most of the contents, as they can all be replaced and fortunately I think his insurance will make good at least some of the losses. Unfortunately, there was a very special trophy in the bag which isn’t covered and as it is nearly one hundred years old it is not replaceable.

Campbell - Do we have a description.

Tony M - Better than that, we have a photograph. So IF any of our mates in the world of Golf should spot this then do notify the authorities.

EYE-CATCHING design at an attractive price - that’s the combination on offer from Nissan with its Juke, the increasingly fashionable compact sports utility vehicle. There’s no denying it, it’s a great design (as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz) that from a distance looks like a three-door but thanks to cleverly concealed rear door handles it is actually a five door. It represents extremely good value for money, too.

It seems to appeal to all generations, too, from the young girl who cycles past and tells her dad how she likes it through to the middle aged man who simply stands and stares. And the gentleman of senior years I spot driving his in Weymouth… Arguably the brown finish of the test vehicle lends itself to the design and my wife and I feel that cream leather upholstery would complement this particularly well. As it is the black cloth seats are comfortable even over a fairly long journey that we take from Hampshire to Dorset.

The raised ride height is always a welcome bonus for me because it gives greater command of the road. It also allows the driver to spot parking spaces that others do not in packed car parks. I find the 1.5 diesel unit pleasantly poky at speeds under 60mph with third gear being very receptive between 30mph and 60mph. Over that speed and it proves slower than expected and at times struggles to hold its own while in the outside lane of the motorway.

Hills slow it up a bit requiring a change down to fourth gear but it is only a 1.5 litre and a diesel and so overall it does a good job and with hard driving will return over 40mpg. The best recorded was around 47mpg. Perhaps surprisingly the Juke holds the road and feels like it’s on rails when cornering, meaning that it can be driven with gusto even round bends. Rather than simply being an attractive head-turner it is also pleasingly a ‘driver’s car’, helped by the fairly hard suspension.

The n-tec model tested also comes fitted with cruise control which is useful for motorway cruising. Bear in mind that the test takes place just after the UK has been badly battered by storms and the Juke copes with the floods admirably. Just down the road from my parents in law there is an enormous flood that has previously shut the road but the Juke makes light work of it. Reversing the Juke is made easier by the camera display on the dashboard.
