Tourist numbers rise ALICANTE REGION has highest increase in foreign tourists after the Canaries. by Keith Nicol THE SUN shone, the beaches were welcoming and hotel occupation in the Alicante region showed an average occupancy in hotels around the Costa Blanca of 85%, eleven points more than in 2013. The Costa Blanca, along with the Canary Islands, were the region of choice for foreign tourists, showing an increase of 12.2% over 2013. During the first quarter the Alicante Region received 909,482 tourists, 9% of the Spanish total, according to the survey of Frontier Tourist Movement (Frontur) as reported that the Ministry of Industry on Tuesday. In March, the number of foreign tourists visiting the community was 370,275, 9.5% of the national total, representing an increase of 9.2% over the same month of 2013. British tourists were the main cause of this increase, but also visitors from Germany, the Netherlands and Italy contributed to this result. Spain received 10.1 million foreign tourists in the first quarter of 2014, representing an increase of 7.2% over the same period last year. This increase, which translates into about 677,000 additional tourists, has contributed to a drop in tourism elsewhere, especially France. The Minister of Economy, Industry, Tourism and Employment, Maximum Buch, announced that the area enjoyed a 86% average occupancy on the coast and 78.5% in the interior, thanks to the rise of domestic tourism. Buch predicts that Easter results and those obtained in the first quarter this year suggest that the initial estimate of 23.2 million tourists will be exceeded. According to the survey conducted by the Valencian Agency of Tourism at Easter, shoreline hotels to the final estimated occupancy reaches 86.04%, seven points more than in 2013.
