Eva Ortiz working for Alicante by Keith Nicol

AS THE European Elections of May 25th loom ever closer, one local politician is covering more local miles than any other; Eva Ortiz. With the major support of Torrevieja’s council and media, she has been covering the province, usually holding meetings in at least three municipalities each day. This week she was in Torrevieja at least twice, the first time on Monday at Pizza 1 where she met with local associations and representatives from the British community. Unfortunately this meeting was cut short as new of the murder of politician Isabel Carrasco reached the event. On Wednesday, after speaking in Quesada, she took an hour or so to relax and enjoy the music and dance of Torrevieja’s May Fair. Eva said: “Nobody sees Spain as Europe’s problem.” Oriolana Eva says she treasures her almost three years of experience in the corridors of European Parliament, where she has represented the PP since 2011. Eva is on the European election list as number 20 of the PP, led by Miguel Arias Cañete, who was also in Torrevieja last week. Eva has played a significant role in promoting new initiatives to create a European Tourism Agency in the province of Alicante, which she hopes Brussels will sign off on in the next term. When asked about the importance of the European elections, she countered; “The economic recovery has begun, but there are still unresolved issues such as employment, but we are moving in the right direction. Much depends on the elections of May 25, to achieve a strong position in the European Parliament, because it is in Europe where approximately 70% of the laws that Spanish citizens will follow, are to be laid down. Above all, you have to remember that the European People’s Party is the largest party in the European institutions and that is leading us to the path of growth and recov-

ery. We need Europe to continue supporting us with funding for agriculture, investment and development and o move forward on job creation, which at the moment is the cornerstone of our daily challenge.” With the election only nine days away, Eva will no doubt

be putting in many more miles as she reaches out to as many people as possible. If elected, Eva will be the only MEP in Brussels from the Alicante region, a major advantage to local SEE PAGE residents when it comes to having someone in34 Parliament to promote the Alicante region.
