This latest protest involves Torrevieja Resident Sonia Valverde and her 12year-old daughter, granted only 20 days’ grace while negotiations are in process. Valverde, who is in recovery following an operation for cancer of the uterus, is a single mum receiving a monthly subsidy of 420€ as she is unable to work. She explained that her apartment, on a lower level of Avenida de Diego Ramirez in the Playa del Cura area, has already been auctioned by the bank and now the court intends to evict her. Sonia has been informed verbally that she has been granted an adjournment. However, PAH supporters did not want to call off the event because at other times that promise has been breached and evictions have taken place. In this case, the suspension order from the court is set to take place in 20 days. The event was organised by the new platform Antidesahucios of Torrevieja,
supported by members from Elche, Murcia, Orihuela and Callosa, among others. The demonstration was controlled from a distance by the Guardia Civil and lasted for two and a half hours. Failure The protest was strongly featuring placards alleging that the City has failed, in the opinion of the participants, in their promises to provide social rental properties to help those affected by mortgage default. The organisers also explained that the Department of Social Welfare promised to provide the means to resolve the situation of those affected, producing a streamlined process without such formalities on time. Sonia Valverde financed her home through Banco Primus, a Portuguese company, and is having to leave the house because of a debt of 30,000€. PAH Torrevieja Seeexplained page 34 that in the city there numerous evictions occur on a daily basis despite many of the banks responsible for the evictions having been bailed out by taxpayers’ money themselves. Their management style is abrupt, unsympathetic and devoid of lateral thinking. Continued on page 8
