Former mayor to serve prison term FORMER TORREVIEJA Mayor Pedro Hernandez Mateo has lost his appeal against his three-year jail term and will start to serve his sentence from July 31st, 2014. by Keith Nicol Mateo was sentenced to prison in November 2012 but appealed stating ill health as a main reason for not going to prison, while a petition was also put forward signed by supporters and members of the PP supporting him, asking for clemency. Although Mateo was found guilty of awarding contracts for garbage removal, paid his fines and has been stripped of taking any political office for ten years, he was not found guilty or accused of directly benefiting from this contract or any other dealings during his two decades in power.
