Severe accident on the CV-925

DAYTRIPS & FIESTAS

The driver of a SEAT Cordobra remains in serious condition after a collision with a truck in Pilar de la Horadada

by Keith Nicol TUESDAY WAS a another busy day on the roads around the Southern Alicante region. In one major incident Firefighters from Torrevieja, took over an hour to safely extract the driver from a crash with a track, while the truck driver walked away unharmed. On Tuesday afternoon at 12:45pm a 112 call was received at the Fire Station in Torrevieja, warning them of an accident between a SEAT Cordoba and a truck on the CV 925 at kilometre 21, on the road between the Pinar de Campoverde urbanization and Torremendo, in the town of Pilar de la Horadada. The driver of the SEAT, a man of middle age was taken to hospital in a Torrevieja SAMU ambulance. He was in a serious condition and was taken

care of by the highly trained health and medical ambulance team. At the scene of the collision, several Guardia Civil vehicles, two fire engines and two ambulances were on hand to close of the road and take care of the situation. As the area readies itself for a major influx this weekend, Tuesday was an Intense day for the emergency services.: For Torrevieja firefighters, it was particularly intense because of this serious accident but they also had to rescue a baby who had been locked in his house accidentally. During the evening, at around 8:30pm they had to make another door opening task, this time in Blue Lagoon, San Miguel de Salinas, for a person who was inside and required the services of SAMU staff.

MotoCaca: soon to make an appearance? THE ‘MOTOCACA’ is an adapted vacuum device that hoovers dog poo from the streets. The machine, priced at around 470€, is mounted on the back of a motor scooter. Many urban centres throughout the Costa Blanca are overrun with swarms of flies attracted to dog excrement left on the streets by strays and also by pets with irresponsible owners who fail to clean up after their animals. Restaurant proprietors are particularly concerned in areas where the odour and fly population is made worse in the summer heat and are calling for councils to purchase fleets of Motocacas to deal with the prob-

Corruption triggered by “failed institutional design” SPAIN’S NOTORIOUS corruption scandal in development and construction was the fault of greed and the failure of the institutional design according to an investigation by the University of Murcia. by Jack Troughton Boffins investigated 676 cases occurring between 2000 and 2009 in the 110 most populous Spanish municipalities – all with more than 35,000 residents. The researchers admitted corruption in Spain was not a new concept but concluded that a number of factors combined during the first years of the new millennium – the time of the property boom. The university’s report says: “Urban corruption in Spain is not new, but during the first decade of this century, a series of factors joined together to trigger a substantial increase in its occurrence, such as the real estate bubble, municipal competencies in urban matters, complex legislation, intricate planning agreements, the ability of the may-

or to make decisions without full municipal support and, of course, the large quantity of money which figured in those activities.” And it was found where local authorities were more transparent and civil servants better paid, corruption was reduced. One key factor was centred on urban planning with a concentration of powers in local town halls – especially with mayors – and a process described as “opaque” that included reclassifying land in return for a bribe. And the tender process also came under the microscope – companies submitting a low price for work and then pushing for an “outrageous” modification. The report concluded that despite a new transparency law – and once recovery kickstarted the property market – there was a danger of the same mistakes being made.

Torry gets DIY Guardia reporting centre

THE GUARDIA Civil in Torrevieja has installed a natty ‘Ofipol’ cabin on the Paseo Vista Alegre. Citizens may use the cabin as a sort of ‘DIY crime reporting centre’ and also utilise the cabin’s facilities to register complaints, complete documentation and make enquiries. The ‘Ofipol’ opened on Wednesday and may be used by any citizen presenting an ID card. It is hoped that the new facility, open 24/7, will significantly reduce waiting times and improve security. Torry’s new Ofipol is the first of such facilities to be opened in the Costa Blanca.

Neighbourhood Watch locking windows by Keith Nicol ON THE Orihuela Costa and Entre Naranjas, Neighbourhood Watch have groups representing 133 residencies. They keep records of the numbers of crimes committed which, on their residencies is normally very low. However, during the summer months of 2013, May to October, they recorded a total of 70 houses that were entered with most robberies taking place between 4.00am and 7.00am. The main method of ‘entry’ is by thieves finding open or partially open windows and by using a rod with a net attached and removing property from within. The numbers of thefts returned to a normal low after these months. Numbers of fishing robberies are on the rise again so NHW advise you not to

leave vulnerable windows open or partially open especially during the night. Also please do not leave articles in view from outside particularly hand bags

and keys. By taking these simple precautions the thieves may be prevented from spoiling things especially if you are on holiday here.

EU to prop up Spanish fruit growers THE EU is to provide support for Spanish peach and nectarine growers in financial difficulties due to the extreme heat and drought and also the Russian sanctions introduced last week. The Commission is taking steps to prop up the growers’ finances with a 10% payment for the crop. It will be withdrawn from sale and freely distributed to schools, prisons and hospitals. This emergency aid for fruit growers comes from a €420 million fund set up under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). It is expected to cost the EU around €30 million. An EU meeting on Thursday of 28 EU member states considered alternative markets for EU food exports originally destined for Russia

Ebola and Spain Providing information for the UK and Spain since 1998

FATHER MIGUEL Pajares, a 75year-old Spanish priest suffering with the deadly Ebola virus, has died at Madrid’s Carlos III Hospital. Father Miguel is the first European to die of the deadly virus.

by Jan Gamm A CONVOY of medics in protective suits escorted the missionary back to Spain last week after he was repatriated on a specially-adapted military Airbus from Liberia in West Africa. He was treated by a team of 12 physicians working two hour shifts over 24 hours. At the time of his death the Madrid hospital would not confirm if he had already been treated with ZMapp, an experimental drug being used on two other Ebola sufferers in the USA. Fr Pajares had been treating patients infected with Ebola in the Liberian capital Monrovia, at a hospital run by a Catholic humanitarian group. He had worked as a missionary in Africa for nearly five decades, due to retire to Spain in September.

EXPERIMENTAL The drug ZMapp is a mixture of three antibodies engineered to recognise Ebola and bind infected cells so that the immune system can kill them: it has not as yet been tested on humans. The manufacturers of ZMapp, Mapp Biopharmaceutical of San Diego, California, have confirmed that “…very little of the drug is currently available” and they are cooperating with government agencies to increase production as quickly as possible. The drug is so far being made available on a compassionate use basis and takes months to produce. TRAVELLERS Elsewhere in Spain airport and port authorities are taking the risk of Ebola seriously.

Dr Brantly

In Barajas airport, a charter plane from Nigeria carrying 140 passengers was moved to an isolation area after the control tower was informed that one of two children on board travelling with their mother was suffering from a fever. All the passengers were released after the child was diagnosed with Tonsillitis.

Spain accuses Gibraltar of harbouring smuggling gangs THE SPANISH government accused Gibraltarian authorities on Monday of ‘protecting’ the criminal gangs that smuggle tobacco into Spanish territory. A formal complaint was lodged by the Spanish Tax Agency that “…there is reason to believe that crimes of smuggling and money laundering have taken place in Gibraltar that affect the financial interests of the European Union.” The complaint claims that 60% of tobacco smuggled into the country last year was sourced in Gibraltar creating a huge illicit market and prompting a year-long investigation by the EU Anti-Fraud office (OLAF) at Spain’s request.

An American doctor struck by the deadly Ebola virus whilst treating patients in Liberia has issued a statement saying he feels he is finally on the mend in his isolation room at Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital, saying: “I am growing stronger every day, and I thank God for His mercy as I have wrestled with this terrible disease.”

Megabus chaos for holidaymakers PASSENGERS TRAVELLING from Spain to London via ‘Megabus’ were left stranded by the roadside for 12 hours from 5pm on Sunday after Spanish police arrested their driver who was allegedly presenting false documentation in the form of a tachograph card that belonged to someone else. The driver was apprehended at a service station 50 miles north of Barcelona on the AP-7, where the 60 passengers remained waiting for replacement transport. 10 of the passengers spent the night in the coach while others were forced to make their own arrangements to get to their destinations. Megabus has guaranteed that they will cover all the costs incurred for passengers who had to make their own arrangements for onward travel, saying: “We will also be issuing a full refund and providing complimentary return travel for all customers affected.”

Flying on water by Keith Nicol THE NAUTICAL experience in Torrevieja expanded once again this week with the introduction of a new activity. Torrevieja’s newest tourism product is Cable Ski “The Bocana” which adds to the different nautical sports that the city has to offer. The construction of the Cable Ski facility in the port of Torrevieja has been the result of the collaboration of a group of entrepreneurs in the marine industry with the city of Torrevieja. “La Bocana” is a sports centre for water skiing where you can practice different modalities such as wakeboard, skiing or wakeskate. It is located in the inner harbour of Torrevieja within the Marina Salinas. Facilities include all the services necessary to practice water skiing, equipment hire, training school and introductory and advanced fixed lines, The area also features a snack bar with a large terrace where you can watch the cable users and enjoy great views of the port of Torrevieja, The beach bar restaurant service and sale of drinks and refreshments. The facilities will remain open to the public 365 days a year, staying open in high season from 10:00am to 9:00pm, while off-season they can be reserved. The Bocana has a navigation area of 6,000 square meters, the cable length is 170 linear meters and ground surface of 300 square meters. The practice of this new sports offering is offered from children of 8 years old. Rates are 25€ for a-half hour and 50 an hour, although at this time has a launch promotion 40€ for an hour, with the peculiarity that can be shared by up to four different people. This price includes the necessary equipment, class instructor, plus insurance for any contingency that might happen. Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, along with Councillors of Fisheries and Tourism, Eduardo Gil Rebollo and Luis María Pizana, visited a demonstration although nobody offered to

try it out. They were accompanied by Cable Ski director Sergio Martinez. The new facilities of Cable Ski Torrevieja “The Bocana” is located on the East Dock, next to the berthing area of

Marina Salinas. The mayor stressed that this is a water sport facility that offers high standards and quality, of which there are few others in Spain.

Continued from front page Regarding the Plan of Works and Services of the Provincial Government, the City of Torrevieja hopes to spend 150,000 euros, which will be supplemented by 481,500 euros in the year 2015, in order to perform the redevelopment work of the Promenade from Punta Margalla up the Avda de la Habaneras. Finally, the Councillor of Finance has indicated that, given the excellent financial economic situation of the Torevieja council in relation to budget ratios, this institution is willing to go to bank financing amounting to 10,740,000 euros, without raising taxes on the citizens of Torrevieja, thus ending the final state of the debt of the session below 75%. The councillor said that “This proves the economic strength of the city of Torrevieja, which has faithfully reflected in the highest and most difficult budgets in the municipal development history of this city.”

Michael Cashman becomes a peer MICHAEL CASHMAN the former MEP who championed the rights of Spanish property owners is to take a seat in the House of Lords as a Labour Peer. by Jack Troughton As the MEP for West Midlands and a member of the European Parliament’s influential petitions committee, he twice came to Valencia on fact-finding missions – and condemned the region’s notorious ‘land grab’ laws and other abuses of people’s rights. He stood down before the May European Elections and has described his promotion to the Palace of Westminster as a “huge and humbling honour.” Mr Cashman said: “It gives me an amazing

opportunity to continue the work I am passionate about; international development, human rights, equality, and giving a voice to the voiceless – those people who are often overlooked because they are not favoured. “Standing up for all those beliefs that I believe make us human and civilised – it is a huge honour.” He said it would be strange to be working at Westminster after the melting pot of Europe where things were done in a very different way, working across the political spectrum to achieve compromise.

Look out Rajoy: a rising star for PSOE LEADING UP to a general election scheduled for 2015, the PSOE is fast catching up with Rajoy’s Partido Popular, returning 31.7% in a Metroscopia popularity poll against the PP’s 32.3%. The PSOE’s soaring popularity is attributed to its new leader, a rising star with Hollywood looks, Pedro Sanchez. Metroscopia surveyed 5,400 people in July.

However, he said it was the spirit of compromise that also saw the UK’s upper house at its best. “Not all of us are in possession of the Holy Grail and

have all the answers.” Pictured in a Brussels office, Mr Cashman surrounded by more than 20,000 petitions complaining of ‘land grab’ issues in Spain.

Death of a legend “

Robin Williams was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit

by Jan Gamm HOLLYWOOD IS in shocked mourning after comedy legend Robin Williams was found dead at 63 at his San Francisco home on Tuesday following a long battle with addiction and depression: law enforcement officials have confirmed ‘suicide by asphyxia’. Williams was an on-screen dynamo described as a “genius” by Hollywood’s most prominent directors. Some of his more memorable roles include Mork the Alien; a slightly off-balance DJ in Vietnam; the formidable and hilarious Mrs Doubtfire and an inspirational, unconventional teacher in Dead Poets’ Society. US President Barack Obama said: “Robin Williams was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most – from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalised on our own streets. THE GUARDIA Civil is appealing for information on vehicles suspected to be involved in robberies in the Benitachell area. Eight burglaries have taken place in the last seven weeks. In the latest incident two people described as “gypsies” went into the house and stole credit cards and ID while the owners were in the pool. One of the villa’s windows was removed and replaced afterward – the owners spotted them and gave chase but they escaped in a Blue Seat registration number 4870 BHC. Other vehicles thought to be involved are: Blue VW Polo: 4586 HPF Grey car: 3293 HKL White van: 2175 FNY Readers are warned to be vigilant and lock gates, doors and windows and ensure valuables are kept out of sight.

Beard epidemic DURING THE last five to ten years we’ve witnessed a contagious fad among Spanish men of all ages: to grow or ‘let grow wildly’ beards so dishevelled and multi-coloured (among older males) that many of these untidy bramble bushes resemble an explosion in a silo. Beginning with many of our not-so-prestigious political leaders, with their whiskers of diverse shades of black, white, grey and brown mixed together (Rajoy and Rubalcaba), we now discover that the epidemic has spread, infecting almost all Spanish males, young or old, with the only common denominator being that almost none of these recently converted fad-followers take the time or effort to trim or care for them. Is it due to simple laziness? I realise that this gripe of mine (and also my Valencian wife’s) is not one of our major problems in crisis-ridden Spain, but if we look around to observe the males of other Western nations we readily notice that hardly any of them (young or old, famous or not) wear beards, and those few beards that do exist are well-trimmed and of one colour. If your appearance isn’t important to you, it won’t be to anyone else either. Richard M McBride

Liz Bulpitt: 6th July 1944 -16th May 2014 I FEEL that I should write a tribute to a very brave lady. I met this bright and bubbly young woman when she first came to Javea and during the passing years our friendship grew from strength to strength. When Liz was first diagnosed with cancer 14 years ago, she was determined that the illness would not stop her from continuing her enjoyment of life with Tony, her husband and Kate, her daughter, who both said that throughout this enduring process, there was never one complaint. Liz showed a warmth, dignity and strength of character which humbled many when they discovered her situation. She was a pure joy to live with and her smile will last forever. The fact is, it appeared to give her that extra zeal to travel and also to assist other members of MABS! Being a very popular lady, all who knew her were struck by her determination to overcome all the difficulties associated with this insidious ill-

ness, even when she was feeling poorly she always looked very glamorous in whatever she wore and her make-up was impeccable. How she found the strength to take control of her life for the past 14 years is to be applauded. It was Liz who decided enough was enough not the illness and even organized her own funeral service, with each of us receiving explicit instructions on what we had to do on the day. On her instructions, the afternoon was a happy one with all her relations and friends attending and their respect and love for her was shown with a donation to MABS totaling over 900€ - again her orders: no flowers - donation to MABS. I do not think we will ever forget Liz and she will be missed sorely by us all. One last instruction from Liz to me was to thank all who attended and gave so generously. Jacqui Phillips MBE President, MABS Cancer Support Group

An example of great service

I AM writing to thank the wonderful staff at the new Iceland store in Benidorm. I had a 5€ coupon to be taken off my purchase. There was a problem with my credit card pin and a manager had to reinsert everything. I didn’t know I had a coupon so it wasn’t deducted. I didn’t notice until I got home but Iceland emailed me before I could contact them, realising the mistake and told me the next time I came in to get the 5€ from them. I had thought I would not see the 5€ again since I had not paid attention, but it turns out Iceland really cares about their customers. I returned and was given the cash back. I have always have had great service at Iceland and here is just another example. Ann Gilman, Benidorm

Osborne targets expats BRITISH EXPATS are in Chancellor George Osborne’s sights in controversial plans to stage a £400 million tax raid and strip non-residents of their personal allowance. by Jack Troughton People renting out UK property for an income would be barred from using the allowance to offset some of their tax liabilities should proposals get a green light. Many of the 1.2 million British retirees living abroad would not pay extra tax on their pension because they are UK residents for tax purposes or because most state or private pensions are taxed in the country of residence. However, retired people living abroad drawing a Government pension, including civil servants, NHS workers and council officials, could pay more tax unless exceptions are introduced as their pensions are only taxable in the UK. Accountants have warned that if the chancellor pressed ahead with plans to force non-residents to pay tax on all UK income, expats could be forced to end retirement abroad. Mr Osborne first targeted the allowance in his March budget and under Treasury proposals release for consultation, personal allowance would be restricted to people with “a strong economic connection” to Britain and bring the UK in line with regimes in the United States, Canada and much of the EU. At present, EU nationals and British expats are able to offset UK income against the current £10,000 personal allowance.

The Daily Telegraph estimated such a move could affect up to 400,000 people to raise £400 million a year for the exchequer – and would include the 175,000 living abroad who earn an income from UK property. GENEROUS A Treasury spokesman underlined that no decisions had yet been made. “The increases the government has made to the personal allowance support hardworking people by helping them to keep more of the money they earn and, as a result, is one of the most generous in the world. “At the same time, we believe that it is reasonable to consider whether non-residents who receive income from the UK are paying a fair share on that income in this country.” Jackie Hall, a tax partner with accountants Baker Tilly, believes should Mr Osborne’s raid go ahead some expats would be forced into abandoning a carefully retirement overseas if any tax changes left them without sufficient income. “Pensioners who have gone abroad would suffer the biggest impact,” she warned. “If you have already jumped ship and are reasonably comfortable, this could turn the tide against you.” The proposed tax raid sparked outrage on social media sites. One person wrote: “Pay tax all your life, retire abroad on a mod-

George Osborne

est pension and get no personal allowance, that’s totally unfair.” Another added: “Tax, tax, tax. These politicians are obsessed with it so they can buy votes to spend, spend, spend.” And yet another commented: “£400 million to balance the books...now they only need another one hundred million!”

Registering your vehicle in Spain Spanish license plates and registration document Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. Sunscreens damage sea life

CSIC RESEARCHERS have combined laboratory experiments with scientific measurements in the waters off a typical beach in the Mediterranean and concluded that some cosmetics, when introduced into the sea while bathing, react with sea water and release hydrogen peroxide. The component is a “strong oxidant that damages marine microalgae.” The research has revealed that certain creams and sunscreens could cause “potentially toxic” compounds to impair marine life, according to a study published in Environmental Science and Technology. CSIC is calling for corroboration between the cosmetics industry and scientists to achieve a balanced and sustainable use of the environment.

Nurturing the English language GREEN-FINGERED GARDENER Dick Handscombe has been helping grow confidence amongst Spaniards wanting to boost their command of the English language. by Jack Troughton THE RTN gardening columnist travelled to Madrid to be a volunteer at an event called ‘Vaughan Town’ – a six day immersion course coaching the language. Dick became an ‘Anglo’ and for 84 hours over six days helped people improve their knowledge. The use of Spanish by either the students or the Anglos is outlawed. He said almost every week of the year Vaughan Town events were taking place at five star rural hotels within two hours of the Spanish Capital. And Dick said it was aimed at Spaniards with an intermediate level of understanding of English grammar and vocabulary, but lacked the “confidence and sufficient practice to speak it spontaneously.” He said he joined other volunteers from as far away as Australia, Canada, the United States, and South Africa, and a number of ethnic backgrounds on Vaughan Town No 489. ENJOY “The Spanish leaned fast and all the Anglo volunteers enjoyed giving something to Spain

and making new friend in Spain and farther afield,” said Dick. “The Anglos are not paid but transport from Madrid and full board for the week is free.” And he said for people who liked talking “it’s great” as 80% of the week consisted of one-onone conversation sessions for 50 minutes each – the remainder of the time was in group sessions, ranging from conference calls to preparing a sketch for evening entertainment by the students. Dick added: “The week flew past evolving as a memorable, even magical at times, experience which will help the Spanish teachers and business executives who attended cope with the increasing demands for speaking English in their

current jobs – or obtaining new ones with internationally orientated companies.” To find out more about becoming a Vaughan Town volunteers by searching for ‘Vaughan volunteers’ on the internet.

Moonstruck Spain

TOURISTS IN Spain were delighted to see a sight to remember - the moon at its brightest and best - on Sunday with the advent of the ‘pedigree moon’, which occurs when the moon is near the horizon, appearing significantly larger and brighter than any other full moon. There has already been a ‘Supermoon’ this year on 12th July but the August edition proved magnificent – appearing 12% bigger and 30% brighter than it did in January 2014, when the moon was full at the farthest point in orbit (‘lunar apogee’). In Spain, where the skies are crystal clear at the height of the summer, the phenomenon is a sight to see!

APAH needs more summer loving Rescued dogs at APAH need your help during the summer

by Keith Nicol DURING THE hot summer months, many British and Irish residents choose to return to their homelands, for the cooler weather. However, for local kennels and abandoned animals, they have a 365 day commitment and so with the mass exodus of APAH volunteers returning home during the summer, they are really struggling to keep their kennels and their shop in Pilar de la Horadada running. So if you can spare a couple of hours each week, your help would be much appreciated. Back in March 2014, APAH launched an appeal for volunteers willing to work in their Cattery in an attempt to avoid its closure. Thanks to a great response, several people volunteered to help in the Cattery and APAH are delighted to report that they currently have enough dedicated helpers to ensure that their cats are cared for every morning

throughout the week. So far they have not been able to re-instate the evening visits, so if anyone living local to Pinar de Campoverde would like to donate a small amount of their time to visit them one evening, that would be very much appreciated. It’s now the dogs that need help and so APAH are therefore appealing to anyone willing to donate a few hours of their time over the remainder of the Summer to help out either cleaning and feeding the APAH dogs, or helping out in their Charity Shop. As volunteer Margaret said, “You never know, come the end of the Summer, you may have enjoyed it so much, you may be happy to stay on and help. There is not much more rewarding than seeing the look of gratitude in a rescued dog’s eyes.” Please contact APAH on 630 422 563 or 616 210 850 if you are willing to help. They desperately need you.

La Fuente shows respect THROUGHOUT EUROPE, America and Canada last week, millions of people reflected on a generation of young men and women who fought or were service personnel in the Great War: WWI. by Keith Nicol Teenagers as young as fourteen ran away from home to sign up and enlist, with many of them returned to their homes only for them to enlist elsewhere just months later. Millions died during the conflict on both sides and to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the start of the war, cities, towns and villages have been remembering those who served their countries. On the evening of August 4th, lights were dimmed across the UK as a sign of respect to those who gave their lives during the Great War, two holidaymakers from Sheffield helped organise a similar observance on the Costa Blanca. David Pearson had been busy organizing a commemorative event in his home town at Mosborough Rugby Club but when a holiday opportunity arose he had to leave the final preparation with colleagues as he and his family took the opportunity to enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine.

With time on his hands and with nothing planned in the local area, it seemed only natural that he should go ahead and arrange a similar event at a local bar. James Dumbreck was delighted to offer La Sahara Bar in CC La Fuente as a venue. The Royal British Legion Recruiting Officer Jim Watt became involved and the event began to take shape, culminating with the commemorative act on Monday night as bar owners, restaurateurs and members of the public united with thousands of people across the UK to dim their lights, leading up to the moment at 11.00pm that Prime Minister Herbert Asquith declared Britain’s involvement in the conflict that would go on to claim an estimated 16 million lives. The commemoration follows on from the words of the then-foreign secretary Sir Edward Grey, who said portentously after the declaration “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” In the UK, the Houses of Parliament, Broadcasting House, home of the BBC in London,

Lisa Gascoigne and David Pearson commemorating the fallen from WWI

and St Paul’s Cathedral, as well as hundreds of councils, iconic buildings, national organisations, including the Royal British Legion, took part in the ceremony. Blackpool illuminations, the Eden Project, the Imperial War Museums and Tower Bridge also went dark. In the minutes leading up to the ‘dimming of the lights’ at CC La Fuente, David was joined by Lisa Gascoigne, a schoolteacher, who has spent the last months introducing her students to this significant

period in history at the Westfield Secondary School in Sheffield. The pair set the scene and recited letters and poems from the time. The event concluded with ‘The Last Post’ which was rightly dignified, as many dozens of holidaymakers rose and stood silently to pay their respects, for each a personal gesture in remembrance of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us 100 years ago and who must never be forgotten.

Michael Jackson Tribute for Torrevieja by Keith Nicol MICHAEL JACKSON would have been 56 on August 29th. Taken away far too young in 2009, his legacy lives on and the latest chance to have a peak of what he looked and moved like in his prime is being brought to the Torrevieja Stage through “Michael, The Legend”, the newly created musical tribute to the King of Pop, produced by World Music Productions, that will première in Torrevieja on Sunday August 24th, at 9:30pm in the Municipal Theatre in Torrevieja. The musical is directed and stars dancer Domingo Sanchez, known throughout the city of Torrevieja for the multitude of works he has carried out with the Municipal Theatre School and most recently at Halloween when he led the ‘Thriller’ Flash Mob through the streets of the city. Domingo Sanchez is also the creator of the promotional video “Flamenco in Torrevieja” and choreographer with the troupe “La Sal de Torrevieja”. He has recently been involved with Spanish singer David Bisbal in mediometraje “You and I” directed by Kike Maillo.

Torrevieja’s Councillor for Culture of the City of Torrevieja, Luis María Pizana, presented the new show along with Domingo Sánchez this week and noted that this visual extravaganza features a cast of dancers, acrobats and pyrotechnics, for a full 90 minutes, that follows the life of the King of Pop music, that mixes dance and visual images for a well rounded event. The show is a comprehensive review of all his most successful songs, from his beginnings in Motown along with his brothers the Jackson Five, through the consecration of his career with “ Off the Wall “,” Bad “,” HIStory “,” Dangerous “and, of course, a recreation of the music video which was a milestone in the history of music videos; “Thriller”. “Michael, The Legend” will premiere at the Teatro Municipal in Torrevieja on 24th August and then tour several cities thoughout Spain with other local performances in Alicante, Elche plus A Coruña, Sabadell, etc. Tickets are on sale at the Municipal Theatre box office and www. Ticketmaster.es, for the most popular price of just ten euros.

home and garden

by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

Oh for some shade!

SHADE IS critical in a Spanish garden if an outdoor life is to be enjoyed to the full, especially in summer. Yet in recent weeks we have heard many an exasperated sigh along the lines of ‘Oh I wish we had more shade!’ So this week I am looking at some of the issues involved and considering ways of ensuring a good supply of shade in the garden while retaining non shaded areas for plants that love the sun and for winter sun for ourselves. First let’s look at the Spanish attitude to shade in their traditional small as well as large garden designs. If one looks at the established gardens of Spanish homes, whether for year round residence or just for weekend and summer holiday use, it’s obvious that shade is taken seriously. Most natural established trees are retained and if there is space fruit trees, flowering trees and vegetables are planted in the gaps or clear spaces. If a swimming pool has been added for the children and grandchildren it is often at least partially in semi-shade. Essentially they are gardens that can be lived in for many hours during the hottest months. Shade is seen as imperative as weekend, fiesta and summer meals are often for large family groups of several generations. And grandparents are normally not as tolerant of the sun as the younger generations. Outdoor cooking and eating starts in earnest at the Easter break. On Easter Monday smoke curls up from many gardens as the first paella of the year is cooked over a wood fire to achieve a better flavour to one cooked over a gas ring. Then the expatriate influx grew. Developers cleared natural copses in coastal and inland areas for building and many of those who purchased a traditional Spanish garden felled most of the trees to make room for a large pool in full sun, large sun bathing terraces, an English style lawn and beds of annuals if only a summer

home. Often as the weather warms up such gardens are under populated as they become ovens for much of the day. With no natural shade – and an umbrella is no substitute for the deep shade under a mature leafy tree- a retreat to shady covered terrace or a cold air conditioned lounge is a sensible move. But once one is used to the latter it is difficult to acclimatise to the summer Spanish climate so summers in northern Europe become sensible decisions with the house let to sun worshipping short stay holiday makers. The two types of garden described above are not exaggerated. Walk around any town, village or new urbanisation and you will see both. So what can be done. DECIDE YOUR LIFE STYLE AND SHADE NEEDS EARLY First decide ,during your first year in Spain if not before, what long term life style you came to Spain for and develop your garden design accordingly. For many including ourselves the chance to sun bath daily – often for too many hours initially - is a novelty during the first summer but by the second or third summer life has became more varied, friends are met and asked round for tapas and if sensibly designed the garden is a delight. Section Two of our new book ‘YOUR GARDEN IN SPAIN’ will help you take all necessities into account and reduce the heartache of making false starts. Second if you came to Spain for the good all year round climate – forgetting the occasional freezing days and week long ‘gota frias ‘– design the garden for an outdoor lifestyle. Ensure that you allow for the three priorities summer shade, winter sun and ample terrace areas. The latter often best split into a number of terraces of varying size rather than just one large terrace. And

ensure that some terrace space is shaded or can be shaded. 12 WAYS OF PROVIDING SOME SHADE 1. Retaining large existing trees. 2. The planting of fast growing young trees. 3. Covered terraces 4. Umbrellas. 5. Blinds and awnings 6. Sails 7. Gazebos and pagodas. a. Cloth and hard covered. b. Covered with climbing plants. 8. A traditional extended porch covered with a grape vine. 9. Maximum use of the natural shade of the north side of the house. It’s free but often on the road side of the house so high walls or hedges are required for privacy. 10. A carport that can also be used as an outdoor workshop. 11. Covered runs for dogs, hens and other pets. 12. Get used to wearing a straw hat. We hope that the above ideas will enable more readers to enjoy the summer climate, which is why many house owners came to Spain. It’s still 32 degrees centigrade in the shade this evening so it made sense to get ahead writing a few RTN columns.

The Property ladder

by

Phil Pennick

Financial Advisor, Pennick Blackwell

– A great investment, done right OVER THE course of the last few weeks, I have had people get in touch with a wide variety of questions and requests for information on how to best invest their money. One of the more frequent requests I have received is “Should I buy an investment property in Spain?” NOW, AS you can appreciate, a weekly column is not the place to get a definitive answer to such a complicated question but I can give you some general information to think about before you invest, or before you even start looking! As a landlord in Spain, what would you be looking for? Rapid turnover of occupancy or a long term rental? This is the foremost question you need to consider as it will shape your whole purchase and investment scenario. If you are looking for a property that will be desirable for the holiday market and rent it on a weekly basis, are you willing to accept the extra cost that will come with this type of rental? Changeovers, cleaning, wrong tenants and the issues they create? A recent ruling in Spain has left one landlord unable to rent their property at all due to the problems created from tenants who arrived for just one week!

If you are looking at the long term market, are you prepared to meet the added payments that a tenant will not cover? Community fees, rubbish charges, damages and replacements to the fixtures and fittings? Property rental can be a very, very lucrative venture if you approach it in the right way and you are fully informed from the off. If you know what you are getting into and get the right management team to monitor it for you, then profit is what you can hope to achieve, however, if you approach it in the wrong way and hope for the best, your money will be filling a never ending pit that will cost you a lot more in the long run. If you are interested in either buying a property to rent or looking to rent, either long or short term a property you already own, contact us for a no obligation, free chat to see how well it can work for you. Prepare with Pennick Blackwell and minimise the risks to your money (and health!)

When will savings rates start to rise?

by

Christina Brady

THAT’S A very good question, everyone is fed up with their savings in the Banks and Building Societies earning little or no growth year on year whilst to cost of living keeps on rising year on year.

Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca IT LOOKS like in Europe a rise in interest rates is

not going to happen anytime soon with inflation bordering on deflation. Central banks i.e. Bank of Spain charging banks to deposit their funds , Italy sliding back into recession for a third time, a further slump in measures of Germany’s industrial strength and German investor confidence plunging to its lowest level since December 2012, plus turmoil in Portugal’s banking sector that could easily spread to other banks in the Eurozone. None of which bode well for a sustained recovery or the increase of rates paid to savers. Even the in the UK which has been talking about raising rates for most of this year, which hasn´t happened yet and when it does it is likely the rate will rise by the awe inspiring amount of 0.25% . Not enough to ensure that savings growth keeps pace with inflation and certainly not enough to make your money grow. What can you do you, you may ask, well there are options out there, there is a 100% capital guaranteed instant access account that is offering 2% on Sterling deposits and 2.35% on Euro,

minimum deposit 10,000. But if you want to have the potential to outstrip inflation and see your capital grow you must be prepared to take a small amount of risk. There are 5 year policies that use smoothing to iron out volatility and have over the last 5 years returned 4% to 5% (net) per annum. They allow you to take 5% maximum per year as income and initial investment amounts start as low as £20,000 / €25,000. So what should you do with your money? Of course we should all have some readily available as a contingency fund, the rest should be invested in the best way to work effectively for YOU. There is no time like now to act, if you are unsure as to what is available and what option is best for you just call me at Blacktower and I will be more than happy to run through the options with you. My advice is free so why not take advantage of this and see what your money could be doing for YOU. Wills and inheritance for expatriates in Spain. Application of the Regulation R.E. 650/2012. by

Carlos Baos

from White & Baos Abogados Solicitors Lawyers

Dear Readers, The famous European Regulation 650/2012 has been in approved since 2012 and is ratified in Spain. It will come into force in 2015. According to this new regulation, the applicable law for inheritance will be (in principle) the law of the country in which the testator has his/her habitual residence at the time of death. HOWEVER, ARTICLE 22 of this Regulation expressly allows the testator to choose the law of his/her nationality as the one to regulate the Will and inheritance. So if you are a foreigner who lives and has his habitual residence in Spain, in principal the Spanish succession inheritance law will be the applicable to your succession law, unless you expressly opt for the law of your nationality in your Will. As per its Article 83 entitled, Transitional Provisions “This Regulation shall apply to the succession of persons who die on or after 17 August 2015 .” Therefore, in one year this regulation will be fully applied to inheritances and successions, leaving little time for Wills to be reviewed and updated (where necessary), and these rules especially affect foreigners

or expats living outside their country of origin. Not all wills need to be modified and updated since the regulation provides for how Wills granted before 17th of August 2015 must be interpreted, but in some cases in order to avoid potential problems in the interpretation of the applicable law to an inheritance, or acceptance of the Will under this new Regulation 650/2012, it may be appropriate to revise the will. A valid example would be if you have your habitual residence in Spain, and you want your inheritance to be governed by your national law, not the Spanish law, which forces you to leave two thirds of the estate to the descendants. Clearly, it is essential to have a will in Spain. If you are not sure whether the wording of yours is adequate, or you want to make a new one in line with the new Regulation, please contact us.

Puente Genil

BASED IN a tastefully furnished hotel with spacious, comfortable rooms in the small town of Puente Genil, explore this charming part of Andalucia with David’s Coachtrips SL. THE JOURNEY takes in the mountains, towns and the coast. Puente Genil is a typical Spanish town with a rather nice ‘village’ feel to it. Puente Genil is named after an 11th Century wooden bridge built over the river Genil, connecting the two halves of the town, later replaced around the 15th Century with a stone bridge which can still be visited. Daily excursions from Puente Genil take the tour to Ronda, Antequera and Malaga: three very different locations, each with much to offer. Ronda sits amongst the mountains of the Serriana de Ronda. This uniquely attractive and historical town has two halves connected by a bridge straddling a huge gorge cut by the waters of the river Tajo. The modern Bridge is now known as ‘Puente Nuevo’ (New Bridge), built much later than the original, replacing one built in earlier centuries that collapsed, sadly taking several residents of the town to their deaths in the valley below. From the Puente Nuevo there are breath-taking views down the gorge. The town has many buildings dating back to medieval times, yet has a pleasant feeling of spaciousness. The bullring, where the modern rules of bullfighting were devised, changing from fighting the bull on horseback to the present day practice of this being done on foot, is one of the most famous in Spain. A fascinating museum takes you through the history of these changes. Narrow cafe lined streets lead to a spacious, lively town square bordered by cafes and an old church, an impressive fountain tinkling away in the centre. The large, coastal city of Malaga is full of things to see, its massive cathedral adorning the city centre. Above the town is the old fortified palace (Alcazar) from which first the Moors and then the Christian monarchs ruled the city. Alongside are the preserved older remains of a Roman amphitheatre. Parks line the esplanade, in turn leading to beautiful beaches. A busy and thriving shopping centre provides a wide range of shops, cafes and bars. Museums include the house where Pablo Picasso was born, exhibiting works of art created not by Picasso himself but by a number of his very talented family members. A city tour bus can be used or how about a horse and carriage ride? A fascinating city: plenty of things to see and do. Antequera is smaller and situated inland with a busy main street always full of life. At the top of the town the old well-preserved Moorish castle is clearly visible sitting above the historical area. Many old convents, churches and city gates add to the character of what an essentially typical Andalucian town developed over many hundreds of years, with an equal taste of old and the new. On this excursion each day is very different and yet costs so little. Davids Coachtrips SL offer this full 4-day package including excursions on a half board basis for only 199€. Next available date: 16th -19th September. Reserve your place by calling direct on (0034) 96 678 5910 or book online at www.coachtripsonline.com

The Jazz Singer sings for Pets in Spain GEOFF WATTS returns to Spain from the UK for his one and only show as ‘The Jazz Singer’ at Restaurante Los Rosales at 7.30pm on Saturday 16th August and has invited Pets in Spain to do the raffle on the night. Geoff, who lives in the UK, heard how the animal charity are now opening a second shop on La Marina urbanisation, opposite Soterin DIY in Avenida Londres. As an animal lover the talented showman wanted to help with fundraising for the new shop. Feral cat colonies are expanding, causing mass suffering through the lack of veterinary care. Summer Parade 2014 By Keith Nicol THE MIDDLE weekend in August marks the two days that Torrevieja’s population swells to more than 600,000 as visitors from all over Spain head to their second homes on the coast. To celebrate, a new fiesta has been added to the calendar: Torrevieja Summer Parade 2014, which takes place this Sunday evening, August 17th, along the city’s main streets. The Parade is planned to start at 8.30pm and will follow a route along Calle Ramón Gallud, from the Municipal Theatre to the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre. Everyone is welcome to attend and join in the fun, it’s completely free and more than 500 people will be dancing in the street for your enjoyment, so bring your camera to capture those special moments. The Parade is dedicated especially to tourists and visitors to Torrevieja and will feature numerous local groups that participate in the many different festivals celebrated in the city throughout the year, in order to promote them and to entice visitors back to the city to enjoy the other major festivals. You will see many of those that participate in Torrevieja Carnival, a representation from the May Fair, the Rocío Pilgrimage, and other festive city entities such as the spectacular Moors and Christians from Crevillente. The busiest place will be at the start of the event, but as the parade moves up the street, if you are arriving late, it is easier to get a good spot near Virgen del Carmen.

14 - 21 AUGUST 2014

Mars and Pluto kick off the week in opposition, and however you plan your time know that you will be subject to cancellations, delays and misinformation…. all along the line. It won’t stop you, but it will give you time to think, and you will be surprised at just what you can get away with when all is said and done and how calmly you take it all! Venus conjuncts Jupiter midweek, and things should start to get very much better. You certainly get the green light on a project, but timing is of the essence since work wise it seems to be all something and then nothing. You are being tested with a view to taking on a new role, so just show them they are getting more bang for their buck. Wildly indecisive, a quick response is what is chiefly needed right now, but you are finding it hard to put two and two together. Don’t make a mountain over a molehill, but do insist that others get it right when they seek to use your talents and gain from your expertise. Mercury takes on Pluto which empowers you onwards. With a New Moon on the horizon you have work to do to sort out the emotional debris you seem to have been left with. There comes a time when you say to yourself that enough is enough, and choosing to ignore the warning signs is taking you into dangerous territory, whilst giving the impression to others you don’t give a damn, and you do! The Cosmos is sending you a clear cut message, but your stubborn pride is stopping you from taking it on board right now. In the scheme of things there are many gaps that need to be filled before you can lay a foundation built on trust, and remember that with partnership issues you will always be the worker, homing in on your professional skills. Mixed blessings this week as you have to follow the dutiful role in a recent family development. The idea that everyone will chip in is far from the reality, and you face the lion’s share of the current problems. However, much will come from this, as you are transported back to basics. Mercury and Neptune steer you in the right direction. O.K. so you may have to bite your tongue, but something does have to be done and you are the right person to take things onboard. The Mercury sextile with Ceres brings you to your senses and prepares you for much of what is to come, although never forget that you have a choice, and that you are striking whilst the time is right. Anger is a dish best served cold, and this week you have every right to give somebody hell for that which they didn’t do. To be let down at this late stage is really inexcusable, especially as there are so many irons in the fire right now. Taking control of the situation, however, brings an unexpected reward and clears up a mystery too. Jupiter is ensconced with Venus, and for sure it is love out there that is causing you to feel the way that you do. To love is never wrong, and you have a good feeling that all could work out well in the long run. How will you ever know though if you don’t give it a try? This time round it is different, but then isn’t that what you wanted anyway? Stubborn energies have seen the end of something drawing closer because someone begs to differ. It is such a shame if indeed the baby is to be thrown out with the bathwater, and all this at a time when you could do with diversion and interest in your life. The Mercury opposition to Neptune works against plans, but brings fresh new ideas. Take what you have heard with a pinch of salt. Uranus and Mars near to a fatalistic collision in which there is much to lose and everything to gain, but it will be a matter of showing who is boss that will win through. You are capable and ready to take on further responsibility, but you are nobody’s fool and have absolutely nothing to lose! Great tuning of your infallible psychic senses serve to pre warn somebody this week before things get out out of hand. You have coasted through a relationship problem, and you are reconciled and ready to put a new plan into action, but it will only work if you let it, and if your partner does not let you down, however gently that could be.

The buzz word Many readers have contacted me to ask me what has happened to the insect population here on the Costa Blanca. I agree that it is very odd there are so very few flies, wasps, bees and butterflies out there, for whatever reasons! Nobody misses the common fly, or the hovering and likely to sting hornet… but when was the last time you saw a butterfly? Cleverly planting basil plants on the windowsills, many flying insects hate the smell and do not enter my house. But where are the flying insects of summer? The bees, I know are chiefly dead already. A virus that began last spring has wiped out the population so much that I haven’t seen one bee here in Finestrat all summer. Guess that means no honey, and Finestrat honey was so very good too, but it also means so much more. Bees are pollinators. If you remove them from the Earth then the pollination of many plants we need for survival are in jeopardy. A recent project involving the University of New York sent groups of students into Central Park to start a cross pollination experiment. One hundred students worked for ten days to establish the pollination of the basic flora of the park, and they worked eight hour shifts. It was calculated that they did 1.4% of the work the everyday bee did as a matter of course. It was also estimated that 93% of the plants within the Central Park boundary would die without bee intervention. Serious? Well, what about food crops that heavily rely on all manner of insect pollination?

Kenny’s Postbag

The calls and the mail I have had has also highlighted the lack of birds flying around. It is not hotter and it is less humid than August last year, and the local pigeon population that scramble over my roof tiles every morning are gone. The lavender plant on the terrace attracts usually a number of smaller birds that nibble the buds and stunt the growth…… this year the selfsame plant is blooming! I am glad that spiritually minded people have started to question the changes of the environment we inhabit. I have remained silent on these aspects since I wrote about Chemtrails a couple of years ago. The trails provoked a stream of photos all taken here on the Costa Blanca, and brought people to me who asked questions I couldn’t answer if they involved the word, “Why?” In every aspect of the terms of the natural and spiritual World we can expect change. There is a tremendous shift, and those of us who have a spiritual faith can expect to be challenged and made aware of the many man made changes that are affecting this Earth that we inhabit. I hope sincerely that the energy we can generate will serve to help others to see just what is happening and how we can be a part of the changes. Fear stops so much happening, and what is needed is awareness and resolve, though at this stage one does not necessarily lead to the other, and nothing is certain. Keep a watchful eye, and share with me…please!

Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com

Kenny, I have been thinking hard and I have really been stupid. So much that could have been wasn’t, and so much of what has happened has left me feeling down. I want to follow my spiritual destiny, but is it too late? Pat. G. Not having any idea of your age I would say emphatically that it doesn’t matter what you have done……that’s done and dusted: it is what you are yet to do that should be your inspiration. Anyone can make the decision to take the spiritual journey at any time of their life. There are no real rules, certainly no petty restrictions and an open heart and a sense of humour are key factors in the process. As for When? How? That’s when the fun really starts. I wish you well on your journey…just do not look back.

Screening for Aortic Aneurysm

THE LARGEST blood vessel in the body is called the abdominal aorta which transports oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body. It is a about the size of a hose pipe and travels from the heart in a straight line through the chest and abdomen before branching off into a network of smaller vessels. SOMETIMES THE wall of a blood vessel becomes weakened. There may be no cause or it may be linked to hardening of the arteries, smoking and high blood pressure. As blood passes along a weakened blood vessel the wall of the vessel may bulge like a balloon. This is an aneurysm. Aneurysms can occur anywhere in the body, one of the most common places for them to form is in the abdominal aorta. In most cases an abdominal aortic aneurysm in itself causes no symptoms and does not pose a serious health threat. However, should an aneurysm rupture (burst) this can cause massive internal bleeding and in 4 out of 5 cases prove fatal. PREVENTION The best way to prevent getting an aneurysm, or reduce the risk of an aneurysm growing bigger and possibly rupturing, is to: Not smoke Avoid a high-fat diet Exercise regularly Be of an ideal weight Screening for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm In 2009 the U.K. launched a screening programme whereby men aged 65yrs are invited for screening. This is because

abdominal aortic aneurysms are most common in men aged 65 or over, with around in 1 in 25 men being affected. The number of aortic aneurysms that rupture is much smaller, with only around 1 in 10,000 people having a ruptured aortic aneurysm in any year in England. Men are six times more likely to have an aneurysm than women. On average, a ruptured aortic aneurysm occurs 10 years later in women than in men. For those outside of the screening criteria, screening is stall advised for those deemed at high risk through a strong family history of aneurysm. TREATMENT If an aneurysm is detected surgery may be recommended. The aim of treatment is to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing. This can be done by replacing the weakened section of the blood vessel with a piece of synthetic tubing. Because this surgery carries a small risk of serious complications, it is only carried out if the risk of rupture is high enough to justify the risk of surgery. This is assessed by measuring the aneurysm. Preventative surgery is often recommended for an abdominal aortic aneurysm that’s larger than 5.5cm. Unfortunately at the current time there is no routine screening programme for abdominal aortic aneurysm in

Let the Famous Five Celebrity Clips Blyton up your Day!

IT’S MY pleasure to announce that The Inbetweeners 2 movie had the biggest ever opening day for a comedy at the UK box office, taking over £2.75m. Fans are as good as begging them to make a third film but Simon Bird who plays glorious geek Will said “Once you see the film you’ll see we’ve all moved on with their lives, so unfortunately this is it - but It’s a great way of saying goodbye!”… Boo hoo!

A FILM production company called Working Title formed in London in 1983 and has a remarkable track record of successes that include Four Weddings and a Funeral, Johnny English, and Les Miserables. Last week they signed a deal to own the film rights of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five books, a move that has surprised many in the business as the content of The Famous Five books truly is a blast from the past in every sense of the word. Scattered all over the jolly childhood adventures of Annie, George (female), Dick, Julian and Timmy the dog are expressions like ‘Rather!’ and ‘Golly!’ and ‘lashings of Ginger Beer,’ the group’s favourite drink. When you then add in that young Dick has an Aunt Fanny and that the group regularly went to Billycock Hill, one realises how innocent Enid Blyton’s work truly was. On that double entendre subject, in 1982 The Comic Strip Presents made a short film called ‘Five go Mad in Dorset’ based on Blyton’s work starring French and Saunders, Ade Edmonson and writer Peter Richardson, and it was hilarious. So maybe this is the direction Working Title are looking to go. Can you imagine the uproar there would be if Annie, George, Dick and Julian started chucking in the odd swear word or were to drop into gansta rapper slang, or instead of sitting round the campfire chatting and drinking ginger beer they all have their heads buried in their smart iPhones. Enid Blyton passed away 50 odd years ago, but I’m sure the current members of her family struck a deal with Working Title to not mess with these classic adventure stories, but just in case, Showbiz Goss will be keeping an eye!

RICKY GERVAIS’ career went global on the back of the remarkably innovative The Office in 2001, and, as reported here nine months ago, Ricky spoke of giving show character David Brent the starring role in his own movie. “It’s going to be tragic, it’s not going to be what he thinks it is,” Gervais has been quoted as saying. We´ll be treated to David Brent struggling to make it as a musician, but is this just a wee bit too much tragedy Ricky. THE BIG Bang Theory started in 2006 and I recall thinking when I first saw an episode … umm? Here we now are with season 8 about to descend upon us and I see that the three main characters have held out for a 300% wage increase and only got it! … $1m (£590,000) an episode, for pure unadulterated tripe!! They´ve battered one pathetic joke about being geeky into submission for 8 years!! ESSEX GIRL Victoria Beckham is about to give away 600 pieces of her designer clothing to try to help raise awareness of women living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. The clothes will be sold online from 20th – 25th August with Victoria saying: “I want to do as much as I can … seeing all that suffering really was a life-changing experience.” Let’s hope Victoria gets the word to those Big Bang Boys … $1m an episode…?

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Haber and the present perfect tense Well hello there! Have you had a good week? Have you been busy? Have you done anything interesting? What have you done today before reading this? I have just got out of bed and made a cup of tea, but you don’t need to know that. Those of you who have been up slightly longer than I have and are sufficiently awake should have noticed something about these questions. They all contain the word “have” and they are all enquiring about recent past events. Now you should remember that at the end of last week’s article we said that, however tempting it is, we cannot translate the word “have” in these kinds of questions, or answers, using “tener”. We have a different verb to translate “have” or “has” when talking about the recent past, and that is “haber”. Like all verbs in Spanish, “haber” changes its forms depending on who the subject of the sentence is, that is, who is controlling the action. This is how “haber” goes: Singular He - I have Has - you have (familiar) Ha - He/she has. You have (formal)

This verb “haber” is an odd one because it is rarely used on its own and generally has no independent meaning, apart from in a few odd expressions. Usually “haber” is used to help change the meaning of other verbs, as in the case we are looking at now. So, taking your minds back an article or two, we were looking at those things called past participles and saying that they joined together with these forms of “haber” to talk about the recent past. Not wishing to be tedious but I want to remind you again that these past participles don’t need to change at all. They remain exactly as they are, independently of anything else, relying on the verb “haber” to make the relevant changes for them. To illustrate this, let’s go back to the first of our example sentences again: “He hablado con mi vecino.” (I have spoken to my neighbour) We can change the person doing the action purely by changing “haber” as follows:

Plural Hemos - We have Habéis - You have (familiar) Han - They have. You have (formal)

He hablado con mi vecino. - (I have spoken to my neighbour) Has hablado con mi vecino. - (You have spoken to my neighbour) Ha hablado con mi vecino. - (S/he has spoken to my neighbour) Hemos hablado con mi vecino. - (We have spoken to my neighbour).

Farm welcomes Lions THE TORREVIEJA Costa Lions were down on the farm last

week to hand over a cheque for one thousand euros to help the Granja Escuela Sol Del Camp, near Agost. By Keith Nicol The farm school provides facilities for disabled, and disadvantaged children and houses animals like donkeys, rabbits, pigs, geese and the like, The presence of a few Lions in their mist didn’t seem to the upset any of the animals, who are shown much love and affection by all the children who have the opportunity to visit. Torrevieja Costa Lions Club presented a cheque for 1,000 euros to Josefina Valero Martinez, President of ADIS Vega Baja. ADIS Vega Baja to help their wonderful team of volunteers who care for and share their lives with children and young adults who suffer from varying Lions degrees of disability. Every year the volunteers take the Janette children off to Summer Camp, on this occasion to Agost, and where the children can enjoy a short holiday with all their Maureen, friends in a happy and carefree environment. ADIS Vega Baja An additional benefit from attending the Summer President Camp is that the parents of the children get a short Josefina break from caring for their children, full in the knowledge Valero that they are safe and happy in the care of Josefina and Martinez and Lion her band of volunteers. The Torrevieja Costa Lions are President proud to be associated with ADIS Vega Baja and look Iain forward to continuing the relationship. Bennett

Wearables

Wearables is the new craze of technology that is currently sweeping the world, taking technology and putting it into wearable devices that are designed to connect and enhance your life. This technology is currently available in different forms such Smart Watches and Smart Glasses. Smart Watches are a popular form of Wearables. These devices normally are able to connect to your mobile phone to provide and integrated service including notifications from your phone displayed on your watch, quick reply text messages and answering/rejecting phone calls amongst many other things. One popular example of the Smart Watch is the Samsung Gear Fit. This watch is designed to help track of your vitals during exercise or sleep, allowing you to monitor your fitness and find out what needs improving. The functionality of the watch can be extended by external developers such as ourselves that can create custom applications that can be used on the watch. Techbubble is currently finalizing plans to test the Samsung Gear Fit. We will be working Sarah Scrivener and the guys at Jacobs Gym in Alfaz Del Pi, and also Russel Bradley Cann and the La Nucia Spartans. These tests will push the Smart Watches to the limit and we will be sharing our results with TechBubble very soon! For more information about the Smart World, check our www.TechBubble.info

Internet wont open DEAR AUNTY: I run Windows 7 and have been able to use Internet Explorer for years: now all of a sudden Explorer will not open. I have tried un-installing and un-ticking in Control Panel and re-installing, all to no avail: any ideas? Brian Aunty says: There are two things to try: The first one will reset Internet Explorer, and remove any ‘add-ons’ that have been installed, one of which may be causing the problem. METHOD 1 Click on Start, Control Panel, Open the Internet Options. Go to the Advanced tab Click the ‘Reset Settings’ button Make sure the ‘Delete personal settings’ box is ticked and press OK. Try running IE again and see if that fixed it. The second one is to uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer. But note than you MUST reboot your PC once you have uninstalled IE.

METHOD 2 Uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer Uninstalling: Open the Programs and Features applet from the control panel (Add/ Remove programs in XP) Click the “Turn Windows Features on or off” link on the left Uncheck Internet Explorer in the list of programs that shows up Restart your computer

Reinstalling: do the exact same, except you tick the box. Failing that, simply use another internet browser, like Chrome or Firefox.

Apps and Windows 8 HI AUNTY VIRUS: I have a problem with my Windows 8, I can only open 2 of my apps on the start screen. Is there a solution? May. Aunty says: There are many reasons why apps will not open, including: An antivirus system, like Kaspersky 2013, avast or Macafee , is causing a problem - turn off, or use another AV program. Incorrect screen resolution - all Windows 8 applications requires 1024 x 768 screen resolution at least. Right click on the desktop, select Screen resolution and go to make changes. If you have turn User account control (UAC) ON, disable this security feature (see link www.thewindowsclub.com/ fix-metro-tiles-responding-windows-8 )

Can’t record radio onto Audacity YOU RECENTLY gave me some advice via Aunty Virus, on recording programs. Your advice was to use Audacity, which I have used for some time now in transferring audio tapes to digital without any problems. So I tried to record a radio show via the BBC radio iPlayer. I start the radio program, then Audacity but there does not seem to be a signal into Audacity. I have clicked the ‘Speakers’ icon bottom right of the Windows screen: this shows the speakers have a signal but not Audacity. What am I doing incorrectly? Peter Aunty says: Firstly, you have to enable ‘stereo mix’. Speakers, Mixer, System Sounds, Recording, and enable Stereo Mix. Then in Audacity, it is a question of changing and configuring the Input and Output devices. Sometimes when recording it actually records feedback: so change the output device to select a different audio output device setting, to cancel this out and Audacity will record. But to hear the recording in Audacity, you will need to change the output to select the correct audio output device setting.

Gadget Inspector Investigates: MiniWINDER Earphone Cable Winder THIS WEEK the Inspector takes a look at the MiniWINDER Earphone Cable Winder. Unfortunately, unless you have a wireless headset or earphones, you’re still tied to a good old pair of earphones with a cable. And with that cable comes the perennial problem of tangles, particularly after use when they get crumpled up and shoved into a pocket. The MiniWINDER Earphone Cable Winder has been designed to remove this aggravation. Just wind the cable of your earphones onto the sprung reel and pull-out when you want to use them. When you’re done push a button and the cable neatly re-tracts ready for storage in your pocket or bag – and no need for batteries either! Next time you pull out the earphones the spring is automatically tensioned ready to re-tract them. The MiniWINDER Earphone Cable Winder is made from a strong and resistant plastic coating to protect your valuable earphones when stored. And as the opportunity for tangling with

other items in a bag resulting in damage is reduced the life of your earphones should be extended too. You don’t have to keep the MiniWINDER attached when the earphones are in use, but you can easily partially unwind the earphones and clip the unit to your clothing or belt. And as the MiniWINDER only weighs 18g it won’t place any strain on the cable. You can also only unwind the length of earphone cable you actually need to listen comfortably. The Inspectors Verdict: The MiniWINDER Earphone Cable Winder will end those headphone cable tangle nightmares, but it won’t be able to fix your choice in music! Please note the following is for information and is not intended as an advertisement - visit www.gadget-hound.co.uk/miniwinder/ to purchase the MiniWINDER Earphone Cable Winder for 22€. Price quoted includes delivery to Spain and is subject to availability (Euro cost subject to exchange rate at time of purchase).

Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer

Toyota Auris Tourer Hybrid

HYBRIDS ARE all very well but they’re generally smaller than traditional cars and therefore less user-friendly. Well, at least that used to be the case with the likes of the Honda CR-Z. The largest was a hatchback, either a Toyota Prius or the more luxurious Lexus CT200h. No estates. Well, not until Toyota launched the new Auris Hybrid Tourer, which provides the environmentally conscious with a well sized, capable vehicle and also performance. Things have really moved on since I drove a hybrid a year ago. My first acquaintance with the striking island blue estate is at night. It’s always more of a challenge to drive a car you’re unfamiliar with when it’s dark, for obvious reasons. A click of the keyfob and I’m inside. The delivery driver was fairly short by all accounts as my knees are around my neck as I sit in the driver’s seat. It’s easy to adjust. In common with other hybrids I am instantly struck by a feeling of fear as I rummage around for the ignition and even though I push the button start on the right of the steering wheel, there is an unnerving silence. The automatic box does not look very substantial but on engaging the reverse function it quietly moves backwards. There is an electric parking brake and a traditional one; the first car I have come across with two. The dashboard looks a bit boxy especially where the sat nav is located; it looks like an afterthought. Over time the driver does become more used to it, though. It’s a large car, not dissimilar to the Ford Focus estate in terms of styling. Head on, it’s attractive and the front looks striking and well designed. The large panoramic glass roof that stretches from the front to the back of the vehicle has an electric cover and this, in common with those found in Peugeots, is a winning formula. It makes the cabin much lighter when the sun does decide to show its face. With my growing family we’re having to make use of every bit of space our Victorian terrace house has to offer and so I have cleared the loft to make way for a more imaginative use of this space; office come bedroom. Needless to say I have a great deal of rubbish to take to the tip including old bits of wood and plasterboard and a vacuum cleaner. The cavernous boot swallows it all with ease and a roof box from roofcarriers.co.uk is also a great help. Although I have to push down two of the rear seats to make way for this large load, it is so easy to do; you simply pull a lever on the right of the boot. Removing the security cover in the boot does prove a little more awkward. ELLIE IS A BLACK LABRADOR who only has one back leg, but it doesn’t stop her running around. Her story is shocking, not only could her owner have saved her leg if he had acted in time, but after her leg had to be amputated, he abandoned her to an uncertain future by telling the police that he had found her. Fortunately for Ellie she was recognised and the whole sorry story came out. She is a lovely girl who needs a far better home than she had. To meet Ellie, please call 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.
