IN A World First, the Orihuela Costa installed new, eco-friendly, high tech beach lockers on La Glea beach in Campoamor this week. Gone are the days of worrying about having your car keys, wallet, purse, mobile phone, kindle, tablet or belongings stolen while you go for a swim as now you can securely lock up your things yet access and lock them away, time and time again.

The innovative idea has been two years in the planning and permission stages and the first such unit was opened for business this week on La Glea Beach. The entrepreneurs behind the project are Koen Mortelmans and Jef Van Hyfte from Belgium, two

very successful businessmen from the world of event management. Jef said, “I was swimming one day in La Mata and my girlfriend mentioned that wouldn’t it be a good idea if we had somewhere to safely leave our stuff while we went for a swim. And thus, the idea was born.”

The lockers operate from 10.00am until 9.00pm everyday, are powered by solar energy and allow you to open and close your locker, to access it as often as you wish for just a 5€ rental charge. The unit takes coins or credit/ debit cards, has an information touch screen and after depositing your money, a unique token is provided along with a wrist band; a locker opens and this is yours for the day.

Tuesday MURCIA CITY Torrevieja has Spain’s highest percentage of adapted taxis

by Keith Nicol WHEN IT comes to meeting the needs of the disabled and wheelchair bound Torrevieja stands out nationally as the municipality with the highest proportion of wheelchair accessible taxis. 17.4% of Torrevieja’s Taxi fleet can cater for the needs of those who are wheelchair bound.

The cities of Torrevieja, Alicante, Orihuela, Elche and Benidorm are the only municipalities in the Alicante province that meet the quota of having at least 5% of accessible taxis, the minimum required by the law, as detailed in a statement by the ONCE Foundation for Cooperation and Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities. They are also the only one’s meeting the requirement in the entire Region along with the Valencian town of Sagunto.

Torrevieja’s share of 17.4 percent accounts for a total of 15 adapted vehicles. Orihuela has five vehicles of this type, 8.1%; Elche has 10,

accounting for 5.7% percent; and Benidorm, with 12, has a 5.2% share. The results were published in the report ‘State of the fleets of accessible taxis in towns of over 50,000 inhabitants in Spain. July 2014’, prepared by the ONCE Foundation and the Spanish Committee of Representatives of Persons with Disabilities (CERMI).

According to the study, only 25.8% of cities across Spain meet this requirement , which means that 74.2 percent of the municipalities still have less than five taxis adapted for every 100 in the fleet. Furthermore, in seven municipalities there are no accessible taxis at all.

Torrevieja’s Councillor for Social Welfare and Accessibility Tomás Ballester, said that between 2007 and 2010 Torrevieja introduced ten such taxis and in 2012 further adapted the fleet to 15, with an overall goal of having at least 17 adapted taxis to serve the needs of residents and visitors. At that time the total number of licensed taxis in the city of Torrevieja was 87.

Two seriously injured in Santa Pola collision EXPERIENCING THEIR busiest traffic weekend of the year, the Elche-Santa Pola road was the scene of a head on collision between two vehicles just outside Santa Pola. On Saturday a 30year old man suffered multiple injuries and a girl aged 27 was taken to hospital with a severe prognosis. The incident occurred around 11:30am in the municipality of Elche between a Renault and a Citroen. Following the accident, two people in serious condition were taken to hospital according to data supplied by the Information Centre and Coordination of Emergency (CICU). Following the accident the injured man was rushed by SAMU ambulance to Elche General Hospital after suffering multiple injuries. The 27-year-old woman was also transferred to Elche hospital for Basic Life Support. According to medical sources, there are fears for the life of both parties.

Self-employment the way forward Entrepreneurs are the way forward for Spain

by Jan Gamm UNDER THE revised self-employment regulations an autonomous worker need pay only 50€ per month contribution to social security compared to the original 250€, for a period of six months from set up.

During the following six months half the normal contribution is payable and a further extension of 18 months may be granted, as part of measures to encourage selfemployment and reduce unemployment casualties. The arrangement was offered initially to people under 30 in February last year and was subsequently offered to all ages from September.

YOUNGSTERS 11,000 autonomous workers based in the Alicante region took up the self-employment challenge, paying the flat fee of 50€ monthly and 267,000 nationwide, 40% of whom are youngsters still in their twenties.

Valencian President of ATA Rafael Pardo said: “It has greatly facilitated things as there were so many people who had a business venture in mind but were unwilling to pay 250€ monthly regardless of profit.”

UPTA Secretary General, Javier Pastor said: “It’s a big help, allowing many workers who are unemployed to have a chance.”

FAILURES There is some concern at the number of new businesses that have failed since setting up autonomously on the 50€ plan, widely thought to be due to the young age of many of the entrepreneurs involved. And attention has been drawn to the activities of companies that insist workers register as autonomous and then re-employ them at a reduced cost, a practice yet to be addressed.

Despite the wrinkles to be ironed out, major trade associations still see the move as a sensible way forward to relieve unemployment.

Ebola scare in Alicante

A MAN of Nigerian nationality was admitted to Alicante General hospital on Saturday with symptoms of the suspected Ebola virus – high fever, vomiting and bleeding. He was placed him into isolation as directed by protocol and his wife was also admitted as a precaution, although she did not exhibit any symptoms.

Fortunately, after thorough analysis and tests, which were carried out at the Institute of Health in Madrid, the results came back negative and the patient was discharged.

Tram striptease

By Jan Gamm PASSENGERS ON Tramline 2 from San Vicente del Raspeig to Luceros, Alicante, were shocked into stunned surprise this week when a young man casually started playing the music from the movie ‘The Full Monty’ and began a striptease in one of the carriages.

Cristian Galera, the star of the show, then uploaded a video of his efforts on YouTube

which has since received more than 4,000 hits. Beginning his performance wearing a white shirt, black tie, sunglasses and trousers, Galera’s act lasted for a full 15 minutes of the journey, at the end of which he bowed smartly, picked up his discarded clothing and disembarked at the next stop to rapturous applause from his fellow passengers. The stunt was apparently in response to a dare.

Torrevieja refuse to pay the lawyer for the police who undressed

by Keith Nicol A FEW agents from Torrevieja’s Policia Local may find themselves out of pocket, after one of their protest stunts will find them in court. Curiously, although they were protesting against the Town Hall, they then asked the Town Hall to pay the lawyer who was representing them, against the Town Hall, for their charge of disorderly conduct.

Last Thursday the Governing Board of the City of Torrevieja dismissed a ‘curious petition’ signed by three local and previous policemen who requesting that the municipality should cover their expenses for a lawyer and an attorney, for a court case against them, that is scheduled for October 6th. The court case has been brought for public disorder and initiated following a

municipal complaint after the accused took off their T-Shirts on April 25th in a campaign for better working conditions and termination of councillors for what they have alleged is disorganization in the Police Headquarters.

They removed their T-Shirts in order for those assembled at the Pleno, in order that they could read slogans written on their torsos.

This was neither the first nor the last of the protest actions as what followed in a subsequent session was a performance by comedian Fernando Esteso and the posing on a Cherry Picker outside the third Floor Windows of the Town Hall on a crucifix, as their last stunt.

The agents filed briefs asking that as city officials, they facilitate legal assistance; ie, that the City cover the cost of their lawyers. One of them even ar-

gued that there was no negligence or wilful misconduct or bad faith in their performance or protest. The Governing Board requested a report to decide whether there was a possibility that the Police Officers should have their costs covered or not, with the outcome being that the accused will now to appear in court and pay, or have their costs covered by a third party.

THE WORLD Health Organisation has called on Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Guinea to prevent people with symptoms of the disease from travelling in order to strengthen detection and containment of new cases.

by Jan Gamm THE SPANISH Defence Ministry has sent its troops deployed in international missions a document with recommendations on how to address the Ebola virus, although at present there are no Spanish personnel in countries affected by the epidemic. A Nigerian patient admitted on Saturday at the Hospital de Sant Joan de Alicante with suspected Ebola was discharged with a clean bill of health the next day.

The Ministry of Health is placing posters at Spanish airports advising of preventive measures against the Ebola virus.

Cocaine boob

A VENEZUELAN woman carrying 3.7kilos of cocaine hidden in her breast implants was arrested at Madrid airport last Friday after arriving on a flight from Colombia. The 43-yearold was screened and searched with other passengers on arrival and started to behave nervously when female agents detected irregularities around her chest area. Spanish police arrested the woman and charged her with a crime against public health before sending her off to hospital. Spain employs a specialist unit to inspect passengers coming from countries with a history of major drug production.

Baby migrant at sea

A BABY girl was found by coastguards to be travelling alone without her parents on a boat with other migrants off Spain’s south coast last Tuesday, in one of 94 inflatable boats bound for Spain from Morocco and intercepted near Tarifa. The little girl was soaking wet and with a high temperature. The Red Cross have named her ‘Princesa’. Other passengers confirmed that a confrontation with Moroccan police prevented the child’s parents from boarding. The Spanish authorities are now waiting for the baby’s parents to claim her.

The cure-all siesta!

ACCORDING TO Dr Esteban Vicente, head of the Sleep Unit at Hospital de Torrevieja Chiron, a 20 to 30 minute siesta each day, especially in the heat of the summer, could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by as much as 37%. The short catnap so dear to Spanish hearts is apparently the solution to many of the stresses and strains of daily life and also increases an individual’s ability to concentrate by an impressive 34%.

By Keith Nicol A STRONG gust of wind coupled with the dry summer has been sighted as a possible cause for the collapse of a Palm Tree on top of a passing car this week. The incident happened at about 10.30pm on Sunday evening on the busy Paseo Vista Alegre. Without warning, the Palm fell on a car travelling slowly in traffic, falling from the centre median onto the Volkswagen.

Fortunately the young woman driver escaped unhurt from the event. Apparently the cause is being blamed on a couple of strong gusts of wind coupled with the drought we are suffering this summer. Fire, ambulance and police personnel provided assistance to the victim and removed the palm tree, reopening circulation in just over half an hour.

With Torrevieja experiencing its driest year for decades, concern has been raised by local residents and motoring groups about the number of Palm trees that line Torrevieja’s streets, many of them creating blind spots and causing disquiet over road safety issues. The council’s ever busy maintenance team are now inspecting all the city’s Palm Trees to ensure another similar incident is avoided.

The buggy thieves

Cheating passengers THE NUMBER of rail passengers that have dodged paying their fares throughout the summer is causing some concern for rail operators on the Costa Blanca. While users confirm that rail travel in general is excellent – comfortable, reasonably punctual and with frequent service, the lack of fare control and ticket inspections has resulted in huge losses through fare dodging.

A CHARITY backed scheme that purchased 150 courtesy pushchairs for passengers’ use at Gatwick airport has failed miserably, with only three of the handy buggies remaining after a summer of pilfering by ungrateful travellers!

National Police shut down two brothels THE SPANISH National Police have dismantled two brothels, one in Benidorm and the other in Murcia. Five people have been arrested, two on charges relating to prostitution, drug trafficking and illegal immigration and the other three on less serious offences. Of the five arrested, one is of Spanish nationality, one Romanian, one Russian and two Paraguayan, aged between 23 and 39 years.

by Jan Gamm The buggies were not security tagged but placed for use on trust in April of this year. However, they are a distinctive shade of ‘Gatwick blue’ and stored in a branded wall-mounted shelving facility.

The service has proved popular and is excellent, providing tired returning holidaymakers in Gatwick’s arrivals hall with a way to keep their travelweary toddlers secure and comfortable

until their own buggies were available.

REVIEW Now the fleet of adjustable Mothercare Nanu Strollers, each normally priced at £49.99, has depleted so dramatically the scheme will have to be reviewed and replacement buggies securely tagged after passengers walked out of the terminal with the pushchairs, boarding the Gatwick Express or packing them into private vehicles.

DISAPPOINTED Gatwick Airport management is deeply disappointed at passengers’ inconsiderate reaction to a family-friendly initiative put in place solely to make travellers more comfortable.

The Family and Childcare Trust, which gave Gatwick its Family Friendly UK accreditation, said it was ‘disappointed’ by the way parents had abused the initiative but added they would still support the scheme. 200 more buggies have been ordered.

EXPLOITATION It is suspected that the establishments were headed by the same person, who sexually exploited foreign women in financial difficulties with dependent children. It is alleged that the women were provided with narcotic substances and encouraged to perform unprotected sex acts.

As a result of inspections and documents seized at least 12 girls allegedly working as prostitutes were in the country illegally.

The police operation collaborated with an APRAMP Association (Association for Prevention, Rehabilitation and Care of Prostituted Women) social worker to provide comprehensive care and advice for women working in both brothels.

The operation was coordinated between police in Murcia and Alicante.

by Jan Gamm GERMAN CHANCELLOR Angela Merkel is preparing to put on her hiking boots and accompany Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on a stretch of the famous ‘Camino de Santiago’ pilgrimage walk in Galicia, northwestern Spain.

Merkel and Rajoy will brave 5 kilometres of the trail. However, the pair set a date for their stroll at the hottest part of the year on Sunday 24th August.

HISTORICAL The Camino de Santiago is a network of historical routes that come together at the tomb of St James in Santiago de Compostela and many pilgrims complete a trek of nearly 800km for spiritual or other individual rea-

sons. Walkers meet other hikers and some attend masses in different churches along the way.

Rajoy and Merkel will end their walk with a visit to the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, according to German government deputy spokesperson Christiane Wirtz.

CHALLENGING It is anticipated that 60-year-old Angela Merkel will find the walk very easy as she spends most of her annual holidays in the Italian Alps and is comfortable in a pair of hiking boots. Rajoy, however, is accustomed only to the occasional gentle jog and could find the walk in the summer heat somewhat challenging…

Check your tattoo ink!

THE WHITE & Blue Lion company has withdrawn from the market kits containing tattoo inks and needles that could pose a serious health risk. This product is not authorised in Spain but is available online. The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (Aemps) has warned that the kits, marketed by an American company, could be contaminated. Tattoo needles are regulated and are required to meet essential requirements. Labelling must appear in Spanish and include the name and address of the manufacturer. People with recent tattoos who are displaying signs of infection such as a high fever are advised to seek medical advice immediately.

Beggars belief CAN ANYONE tell us why these beggars in Albir have not been moved on? Surely the authorities realise that it is not good for business.

These people sit outside supermarkets, like the husband and wife that walk from Altea every morning at approximately 8.30am and sit outside Mercadona from 9am to 2pm - the husband in front with his trolley, a dog and a sign saying they are living on the streets without a home or food. Absolute rubbish…!

Then you get the do-gooders giving them food and money whilst these two just sit there laughing at the public. Let’s be honest they are not even Spanish! They don’t give to Spain so they should go back to their own country. But they don’t as they know they will not get any hand-outs.

They are both young enough to work but until the public realise this, they will sit there taking. Let’s clear these beggars once and for all and get Spain back to how it used to be.

Easier said than done I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with your article relating to the elderly in need in Spain but it is not as easy as you have made it sound to get assistance from the DWP in the UK. My mother had a stroke 6 years ago this July and has a severe heart problem. She receives a Retirement Pension as she spent all of her working life in the UK and paid into the system.

As her full-time Carer I applied to the DWP for Attendance Allowance on her behalf: three Lower Tribunals; two Upper Tribunals; two paperwork trips to the Secretary of State… I finally won her case after a four-year battle.

As I have not been able to work for the last six years I applied one year ago for Carer Allowance. So far I have been turned down by the Lower Tribunal but have been given permission to appeal to the Upper Tribunal which I have done: to date no answer on this one. I have paid into the UK system for 28 years.

So I just wanted to let you know - in theory it sounds easy but in practice it is enough to crack you up.

Watch your bags

WHILST FITTING a child seat in the parking lot at Elche International Airport (El Altet) on 15th August I was robbed of my bags.

A man approached me in a silver Citroen Saxo asking for directions to Alcoy.

His comrade was in the parking lot and made use of the distraction to lift over 2000€ of personal possessions.

Be wary of people who try to engage you in conversation: security is very low, especially on the ground floor.

El Altet is Spain’s third busiest Budget airport

by Keith Nicol IN THE first seven months of the year, two million passengers have passed through El Altet using low cost budget airlines. Figures at the airport are up 6.6% over the same period in 2013.

According to data released Monday by the General Department of Knowledge and Tourism Studies under the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, airlines transported 18.3 million passengers in the first seven months of the year, representing an increase 10% over the same period last year. Traditional companies flew more than 20.3 million travellers through July, 2.5% more than in the same period of 2013, thus, the low cost airlines accounted for 47 5% of the air traffic over traditional companies, which commanded 52.5% of travellers.

For July 2014, overall the budget airlines increased passenger figures by 9.7%, up to 3.9 million passengers, a 49.5% share of total air traffic of the month, which rose 4.8% to 8 million compared to more than 4 million people who chose traditional companies, a 0.5% increase.

Among the budget airlines, Ryanair, EasyJet and Vueling accounted for the highest volume of international passengers carried. Between them they accounted for about 66%,

bringing together 33% of total international air traffic received in Spain. The three recorded annual increases.

The UK and Italy are leading entries in low cost companies through July with 37.8% and 11.1% of passengers respectively, showing growth of 7.4% for the British market, over 6.9 million passengers, and 11.8% in the Italian market: 2 million passengers. Germany came third, with numbers increasing 23.3% to over 2 million passengers, equivalent to 10.9% of the total entries in this way, followed by France, with 7.9% for total 1.4 million passengers, up 8.3% from a year ago. After the French market, the Netherlands saw an increase of 5.7% in numbers with 1.1 million passengers, 6.5% of the total.

These major players were followed by Belgium, 654,400 passengers; Switzerland 543,322; Norway 54,3321); Ireland 529,965 and Denmark with 416.052 travellers. Passengers from Sweden decreased by 3.1% to 410,977 passengers.

The Spanish airports used most by budget airlines were Barcelona-El Prat, with 4.5 million passengers and an increase of 17.5%; Malaga, with 2.3 million passengers, up 10.9%, and Alicante, with more than 2 million passengers and a rise of 6.6%, followed by Palma de Mallorca, which received 1.9 million travellers, up 6.7%, and the Madrid-Barajas, which saw an increase of 11.5%, with 1.7 million travellers. All airports recorded increases except Girona-Costa Brava, which fell 21.8%, with 576,235 passengers, and Valencia, with a decline of 2.5% to 614,126 passengers. In contrast, they noted increases in Tenerife Sur to one million passengers and with 21.9%, the biggest rise, and Lanzarote, with 21.7%, 522,635 passengers.

DATA PROVIDED by the Department of Transport reveal that between 1st July and 17th August a record 1.8 million vehicles entered Benidorm – a slight increase on last year! Dubbed the tourist capital of the Costa Blanca, this translates to a minimum of 40,000 cars per day entering the main arterial routes into the resort. Despite these staggering numbers the Councillor for Transport, Maria Carmen Martinez was pleased to announce that no major traffic incidents occurred thanks to the diligent work of the local police.

Malnourished mare rescued IN ONE of the most appalling cases of animal neglect yet, the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has saved a malnourished mare with a disease that left her so itchy she literally broke off her own tailbone.

by Patricia Thompson Sue and Rod Weeding of the EHCRC were called to Almoradi by police on Sunday after a Spanish woman found the horse tied to an orange tree and abandoned. Sue said. “This 15-year-old malnourished mare has melanomas that had become infected through neglect, triggering an allergic reaction causing intense irritation on any bite, cut or wound.”

The horse had begun to rub and scratch herself everywhere. “The intensity was so great around her tail area that she has actually broken off her tail bone, we think about a month ago,” Sue said. “At least the mare was not in any pain as the nerve endings around her tailbone had died off and were starting to heal over.”

The horse’s tail will never grow back but with lots of care, her wounds should heal to an acceptable standard.

The quick action of police shows local authorities are now on board and fully support-

ive of the rescue centre’s work to prevent animal cruelty across the Alicante province.

Hottest Sunday of the last two years

TEMPERATURES HIT the highest peaks for two years last Sunday throughout the Valencia Community, reaching 32 degrees Celsius, the highest since 2012, when it reached 37.5 degrees. This is not an isolated incident as Valencia also recorded the hottest day of this summer over the last two years, with temperatures exceeding 41 degrees Celsius in different parts of the country, as reported Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Temperatures were particularly high in the provinces of Valencia and Alicante. In Xativa it reached 41.5 degrees with the next highest temperature dated back to August 1st, 2012 when it reached 42 degrees, which is their record. In Orihuela the mercury registered 39 degrees, second only to the August 12th, 2012 when it reached 40 in the Camp de Turia.

Sources at Aemet that temperatures will continue to decline in the coming days with maximums not expected to exceed 31 degrees Celsius on average, compared to 33 on Sunday.

My only wish and intention in signing that group letter is the hope that there will be peace in both Israel and Gaza.” Hollywood executive Ryan Kavanaugh told the Hollywood Reporter: “Bardem and Cruz should shut up and sing,” adding, added: “I would be interested in reading the opinion of the same Spanish celebrities should thousands of rockets be fired at Madrid or Barcelona.”

MOVIE STAR Ben Affleck has reportedly been injured while filming a sequence for ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. The actor had to leave the set and go home to recuperate after wrenching his shoulder and there are fears that the incident may delay filming. by Keith Nicol A PACKED Eras de la Sal was transported back to the funk and disco era of the seventies and eighties on Wednesday night as the legendary Kool and the Gang took to the stage.

After an excellent warm up from the award winning Ashley Tweddle, the party started in earnest the moment that Kool and the Gang took to the stage. Within minutes, almost the entire VIP section were on their feet and dancing to the music of their youth, with the music going on for almost a full two hours of hit after hit.

The band had a busy week, played in Marbella on Tues-

day, Torrevieja Wednesday and travelled onto Majorca to fulfil their three-date tour of Spain. Close your eyes and one could have been at one of their concerts from thirty years ago, such was the pure sound and professional musicianship of the band.

The core members of the group through the years have been Robert ‘Kool’ Bell on bass and Ronald Bell on tenor saxophone; George Brown on drums; Robert Mickens on trumpet; Dennis Thomas on alto saxophone; Claydes Charles Smith on guitar, Clifford Adams on trombone and Rick Westfield on keyboards. The father of Robert and Ronald worked with Thelonious Monk and were friends with Leon Thomas. In 1964

Robert formed the instrumental band “The Jazziacs” with five classmates and then changed their name to Kool & the Gang when they released an album of the same name in 1969.

During their set they played all their classics including “Jungle Boogie”, “Hollywood Swinging”, “Celebration”, “Get Down on It”, “Joanna”, “Fresh” and “Cherish” all classic hits of yesteryear. Before the show, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Culture Luis Maria Pizana, Councillor for Foreigners Rosario Martinez and the Director of the Foreign Residents Office Jean Paul Mulero, along with John Kahn from Heatwave Promotions, presented the band with an iconic Salt Boat as a memento of their visit to the City of Salt.

Electromar announces new edition for 2015

by Keith Nicol MORE THAN 8.000 revellers partied throughout the night into the early hours of Saturday morning to celebrate the 2014 edition of Electromar.

Even before the festival had closed its doors and the last guest headed off for their breakfast, the event organizers announced that there would be a new edition for 2015.

On a hot summer evening, at six o’clock, Electromar opened its doors to warm up the audience slowly with performances by SFDK, the only hip hop group on the bill, who did not fail their loyal fans. On stage well known artists on the techno music scene such as British artist Steve Lawler made way for Nic Fanciulli and Solomun, whose underground sound was well received. JP Candela, icon of the Spanish house scene, was one of the sensations of the festival bringing together much of the “electromarinos” along with the set of Gonçalo, who mixed the most current hits in a frantic set right after Gaiser.

After the French Dirtyphonics came the headliner, the American Steve Aoki and DJ Nano whom Luis María Pizana, Councillor for Culture presented with the traditional Salt

Boat to one of the most important symbolic prizes awarded by the city of Torrevieja. Aoki’s show was spectacular and the highlight of the festival was when he invited the Dirtyphonics on stage along with cream cakes, inflatable boats and mattresses.

The technical skills of the London producer Ben Sims, Brazilian partners Pet Duo and one of the few females in the mix, Candy Cox brought an end to a long morning of electronic music.

What should I do in case of a car accident?

Spain is beautiful, and in the summer months not only do locals get out and about to drive the scenic routes or take short weekend jaunts, but many tourists drive vehicles into the sunshine to explore all the fun, festive and fabulous things that the country has to offer. This means that more people are on our roads, and more vehicles are sharing the Spanish highways in the summer months more than any other time of the year therefore, an increase in the risk off traffic accidents normally occurs.

Even after all the theory, driving lessons, and parking tuition training sessions accidents still happen. As a new driver, it is important to do everything you can to avoid

The vegetable garden in August and September IF YOU have never grown vegetables in Spain now is a good time to start preparing in order to have some first crops for Christmas. For active vegetable gardeners there is much to do from harvesting and storing summer crops to preparing beds for October plantings.

STARTING OUT Decide on the scale, which can range from a few vegetables on an apartment terrace, in a patio garden or along the drive in a few large pots and containers, to a 4-sqm raised bed in a corner of a garden, or a full plot of 100 to 400sqm.

If you are planning a mini garden collect the necessary number of containers. Choose attractive ones or disguise them: As a halfway house to a raised bed an old bath is ideal. If you do not have a compost heap fill all containers with a mix of potting compost and the worm humus now available in garden centres in bags, or use a bag of organic fibrous compost prepared from goat or sheep manure, sold at many local agricultural cooperatives.

For raised beds, build the walls as soon as possible. Aim at a 30 to 40cm minimum height and a width of 70 to 100cm.

The length can be anything from 2m to 30m! If you have a compost heap, use the next batch of finished compost. If you live near an ECO park that sells inexpensive compost, buy that. Or purchase bags of organic compost from a garden centre or agricultural cooperative. Aim for a 25 to 35% compost to 65 to 75% soil mix.

If you plan a large plot clear it of all weeds and dig, plough or rotovate the soil to a fine tilth. On the last working mix in 20litre plastic buckets x 2– the sort Spanish builders use

– of well rotted compost and manures or the compost from an eco park. Leave for a fortnight to settle, removing any weeds that come up, before you plant anything. We have assumed that you are planning to grow organic vegetables.

FIRST SOWINGS The crops suitable for sowing in September include lettuces, chicory, carrots rocket, radishes spinach, Swiss chard, onions, leeks and potatoes to produce new potatoes for Christmas. Remember that they will need regular watering until the autumn rains.

PROGRESSING AN ESTABLISHED VEGETABLE GARDEN Harvesting will be in full swing and now is the time to store or process excess crops for the winter. Dig up the last onions and garlic. Wash off the earth, lay out to dry for a week and then hang in bunches or plaits in a cool dry place to store.

Melons, squash and pumpkins can be stored on shelves in a cool dry cellar, garage or north-facing naya. Dig up peanuts, wash, dry in the sun and store in a dry cool place until baking in a low oven or eating fresh.

Excess tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, and cucumbers can be processed into chutneys and tomatoes and beans bottled in brine. Also start some pickled onions by bottling onions in a

cider vinegar and water solution, pre-boiled with some pickling spice.

Remove all plants as they finish cropping. Put healthy material on the compost heap and burn anything deceased.

Watch for summer pests and fungal attacks, especially on tomatoes and peppers. Dust the plants with natural sulphur through an old sock. Prune and feed tomato plants to encourage new growth into late autumn.

Feed the paella beans planted in July and pinch out the ends of flowers on the butter beans.

Turn the compost heap watering each layer to ensure it stays damp.

A QROP Christmas – Start now for Christmas As we start to come to terms with the end of the summer, in calendar terms if not heat, thoughts start to turn to the end of the year, the Christmas decorations will be going up in a few short weeks, don’t think I am looking too far in the future!

HOWEVER, WITH the QROP process, looking ahead is the way to go. Last year in the weeks, not months, leading to Christmas, we saw many ads proclaiming that they could get your pension transfer sorted out in time for Christmas. I don’t know how they could do that but a normal QROPS transfer can take between 6 and 12 weeks to come to fruition, from the initial meeting with a financial advisor, November is just too late to get that Christmas present you are hoping for!

The truth of the matter is that Pension companies, or the insurance companies that underwrite pensions for private companies, do not want to let the funds leave their account and will do anything they can to delay the transfer. Some companies, as late as November like to claim they can get you your funds by Christmas and if that is the case, my question would be how?

Customers that get working on their QROP transfer now can be sure to have, if they wish to avail of it, their 30% lump sum in time for the holidays, however, you must work in tandem with your

Little joy for savers IT IS reported that despite a surprisingly large drop in inflation, of 0.3% to 1.6% in the UK, savers continue to get a raw deal from Banks and Building Societies who are still paying very low rates of interest compared to the cost of borrowing.

TO BEAT inflation, a taxpayer paying the basic rate, at 20 per cent, needs to find an account paying 2 per cent interest purely for their money to keep up with the rising costs of goods and services.A higher-rate taxpayer needs to find an account paying 2.76 per cent.

However, new findings show that out of the 873 savings accounts on the market, only 170 pay enough to negate the effects of tax and inflation. Clearly most savers are actually losing money in real terms.

Sylvia Waycot from moneyfacts.co.uk is reported as saying, “With the average easy-access account paying a miserly 0.66 per cent and the average interest paid across the ISA range at just 1.56 per cent, savers continue to suffer.”

This has to be put even more into context, when inflation hit 2.8 per cent last year, only one account paid enough to negate the effects of tax and inflation.

The knock on effect of this, is that people relying

on their savings to top up their income are now gnawing away even more deeply at their capital. As capital is eroded, the returns fall and people find themselves in a vicious circle of losing more money.

Careful with the reservation contract for the sale or purchase of a property!

Query: Dear Spanish solicitor. We are interested in buying a Villa we have seen with a real estate agent in the Marina Alta. The agent told us that first of all we have to sign a reservation or arras contract and pay a deposit of 3000. Then once reserved, we can search for legal advice to negotiate and prepare the purchase contract, which is the important one. Is this correct?

Dear reader, thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately I can not agree with what has been said by the real estate agent. You should know that contracts commonly known as arras or reservation contracts, are not in reality as many people believe, an independent and previous contract to the main purchase contract.

The “arras” are delivery of an amount of money with a series of legal effects which are articulated as part of the main agreement, usually the purchase contract.

It is essential you receive legal advice prior to signing of any reservation or arras contract or deposit, because what you agreed in them is binding, and usually the signature of the reservation also means the confirmation of a purchase contract.

You should know that on more than one occasion, we have been visited by clients, both buyers and sellers who had signed a reservation, and once we reviewed it, we had realized that the reservation was worded and contained agreements that that did not benefit our clients, such as: - Completion date and signature of deed of sale incompatible with the time required to make the necessary checks on Town Hall, etc. .- Agreement about who is responsible for paying the costs of the sale .- Acceptance of property in its legal, urban, planning and cadastral situation was inappropriate Also, you should know that legally we could distinguish between 3 types of arras: criminal, penitential and confirmatory, although sometimes to the non-expert they look similar, each has very

Also another problem that we have seen, after the signing of a reservation or deposit contract by would be buyers without legal advice, is that sometimes they sign believing that any time they could rescind or terminate the contract, simply losing the arras paid, but this will only be the case if the arras signed and paid was as “penitential” arras, with the requirements prescribed by law and court precedence.

The importance of contracts popularly known as reservation or arras really should not be underestimated. You will be tied by them, and remember that the interests of buyers and sellers do not always coincide, therefore it is more than advisable to seek legal advice for drafting and negotiating all agreements and contracts that you are to sign.

Sky wins Disney adventure

EXCITED SIX-YEAR-OLD Sky Vaghela is off to Disneyland Paris to represent Spain in the fun charity pageant Face of Europe and the World.

by Jack Troughton The animal-loving schoolgirl, who lives in Teulada with parents Mitesh and Liana, will appear in the grand finals of the ‘Minnie Face of the World’ category for youngsters aged between five and eight between 27th October and 1st November – there are also classes for juniors, teens and seniors at the annual competition.

She will meet competitors from as far away as India, Japan, and Australia, and will join in the fun of dressing up in glamorous costumes at the Dream Castle Hotel – as the organisers say “everyone dreams of being a Princess in Disneyland”.

Sky, who speaks English, Castellano, and Valenciano, and attends the Cap D’Or School in Moraira, likes swimming, cycling, singing and music, and loves animals. “I have a dog named Jessie.”

And she told judges how she would like to visit Austria “because I would like to see the snow.”

The youngster also said: “I am most looking forward to seeing the Disney Castle and making new friends.”

Mitesh and Liana said they were “very proud” of their youngest daughter’s achievement in reaching the grand final and being chosen to represent Spain.

They told RTN they had to wait to see if Sky won through to the Paris finals and her photos were now on the official website www.faceofeurope.co.uk “We now have to raise as much sponsorship as possible for the charity competition. Sky is now representing Spain and is the only one from this part of the world in her age group.”

Summer Parade attracts thousands THE LATEST fiesta to feature in Torrevieja is the new Summer Parade. Held on the busiest Summer Sunday of the year, the former Salt Parade has been renamed and revamped with a bright and fresh new look, along with a new name, of the Summer Parade.

By Keith Nicol ON SUNDAY evening thousands of people lined the street to enjoy the sights, sounds, music, dance and costumes that featured more than five hundred people, among them troupes, musicians and volunteers. The Parade followed the traditional Carnival route along Calle Ramon Gallud between the main square and the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre.

The parade was opened by Grupo Folklorico Salaneros, who moved off at a frantic pace to lead the event with their professional choreography followed by the excellent carnival group “La Sal de Torrevieja”, who as always were magnificent. The fest for the eyes continued with the winning troupes from the last Carnival Parade 2014, Puerto Rico, confetti and streamers, Dando Caña, Colegio Inmaculada, Paya’s and Aquí hay tomate, who turned up in costumes as if entering a pageant contest. Especially for the thousands of visitors, the Parade provided a little touch of what are the best performers at many of Torrevieja events.

The Municipal School of Dance, directed by Nuria Girona made its way along the street to the refreshing sounds of Caribbean rhythm and music, before making way for the flamenco dancers featuring representatives from the May Fair.

The costumes and Mexican rhythms representing Asila gave way to a themed float with the different Queens from Torrevieja’s neighbourhoods as well as a broad representation of the Moors and Christians from Crevillente with all their pageantry accompanied by a spectacular band.

Torrevieja’s giant big heads evoked a little pre-Christmas spirit; which after all is only 124 days away… The World of Disney was represented and provided a lo of fun for the youngsters on route, with their chariot, princesses, princes and dozens of characters who stopped to be photographed by thousands of small children along the entire route. The spectacular parade ended with the Queen of Salt and her Bridesmaids.

I AM delighted that more and more people are trying to make contact with the Spirit World by themselves, and even more delighted when I hear that they are succeeding.

Spirit like to be invited in and recognised, so do not waste time asking who the contact is if you get through because they are waiting for you to recognise them….. you’ll soon fathom who it is that has come forward for you. It helps to create a quiet space for the contact. I have always believed that lighting a candle, or more, can illuminate the way ahead and send a message of good intention, and if the atmosphere is right then a good connection is only a step away.

Give your loved ones a day and a date and a time, as if you were making an appointment with them, because that helps a lot. Many connections fail because the departed think that they haven’t got it right. They have some hefty mechanics to bear in mind if they are to make contact, after all. Good timing and encouragement all around can work wonders for you. of course you do have to eliminate any fear for the process to work. It works because it can, but if there is regret or pent up emotion or any unfinished business then the flow can be disturbed and the result will be disappointing for all concerned.

A word of warning that you may find that someone you do not wish to contact with starts to come through. The best thing to do here is to ask them to go and literally brush them away with the rubbing of your hands together. The contact

Of course visiting a Medium is the obvious way of making a safe and comfortable connection with loved ones in the Spirit Realm. The Medium will literally send a calling card up to Spirit and tune in with you simultaneously. I always advise those people I feel need to make further contact, especially if I feel that a loved one has held back with me, because there were things to be said on a very personal level. Strangely through not much is held back from me by the Spirit World. I say things like they are and always give the benefit of the doubt. In my many years of working with the departed I have an understanding that allows barriers to fall and the true depth of message can get through just when and where it is needed. I do not poke and pry and the confidentiality and sanctuary of my office has brought such good connections as I tread the medial line between life and death with all its glory, and all of its contents.Each and every message is special and can mean so much to us the living.

Just to know our dear departed ones are alive and receptive in another dimension is richly rewarding and a comfort, a joy.

Many people tell me that they talk to their loved ones but there is never a reply. There is always a reply, just that we cannot always feel it, see it or hear it. Love never dies and the power of a good connection takes away so much pain as we treasure the Earthly lives our loved ones have lived. Yes, one day it will be us up there waiting to come through, spreading love with every treasured memory we can muster, as we provide the evidence of our survival.

Satisfied hearing aid users

UP TO 84% of hearing aid owners are satisfied with their hearing aids, a survey shows. Figures from seven countries show that the percentage of people who are satisfied with their hearing aids varies from country to country.

IN SIX European countries, the satisfaction rate varies from 84% in Switzerland to 70% in Italy. In general, eight out of ten are satisfied with their hearing aids and said they were either ‘very satisfied’, ‘satisfied’ or ‘somewhat satisfied’ with their hearing aids.

The same study was carried out in Japan. The situation there was different. Only 36% said that they were satisfied.

A similar survey from the US in 2008 (MarkTrak VIII) showed that 74% of US-owners were satisfied with their hearing aids.

AGE AND USE OF HEARING AIDS The survey also found that the newer the hearing aids and the more hours of the day the hearing aids were used, the higher the satisfaction rate.

The surveys were carried out in Italy, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Norway and Japan in 2012.

George JJ Martin is Sitting on the Thrones I´VE BEEN noticing around the web over the last six months or so that more and more story lines are being leaked to the press telling us what’s coming up in TV shows and soaps on the back of some saddo spoilsports somehow or other tracking down the scripts before they are broadcast.

ONE OF the biggest shows on TV right now is ´Game of Thrones´ and writer George RR Martin is still in the middle of writing the final two books, The Winds Of Winter and A Dream Of Spring. There’s no leaking taken place here, but Martin tells us that people are sending him posts about the way they think the story will end, and he says some, not many, have got it right ... Why do people want to know the end of a story before it happens?? … Is this why the nasty leakers are getting away with plying their trade??

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph writer Martin said “At least one or two readers have put together the extremely subtle and obscure clues I´ve planted in the books and came to the right solution, but I´m not prepared to let you know who’s got it right and who hasn’t.” Well said that man!!

Martin carried on adding “I’ve wrestled with this issue, because I want to surprise my readers, I hate predictable fiction, I want to surprise and delight my reader and take them in directions they didn’t see coming. “ Well said again bruv!!

It’s clear that writer George JJ Martin is working extremely hard to keep everyone guessing with Game of Thrones, and quite rightly so, but still I am drawn to asking the question … Do any of you want to know the end before it happens?

LAUREN BACALL passed away sixteen hours after the sad loss of Robin Williams, a lady I admired greatly, both for her stunning beauty and her work in the cinema. At less than half his age, she married Humphrey Bogart on May 21, 1945 and together they threw the wildest all-night parties inviting the likes of Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Frank Sinatra, and formed a gang known as the Holmby Hills Rat Pack ... So that’s where Sinatra got the idea.

I HAVE long since detested anything remotely close to crass, and if ever there was crass with a capital ´aahhh! ´ it’s this next item. Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee will be part of the new super-naff Celebrity Big Brother show on Ch5, and the magician has only said “I might start a sexy exercise regime in there and get my mistress Debbie to get me in shape”... Be smart … find something else to watch!

LAST WEEK in Madame Tussauds in Las Vegas Olivia Newton-John attended the unveiling of a waxwork of when she was 29 when she starred in Grease in 1978. Olivia is now 65 years old and amazingly looks very much the same. Has she discovered the fountain of youth? She

flatly denied plastic surgery rumours during a 2012 appearance on ITV’s Loose Women putting it down to ´eating well.´ No bacon butties then?

A PERSON from ITV´s promotion department could well be contemplating digging a big hole in the ground somewhere in the Outer Hebrides and sitting there until the heat is off ... and what heat is that I hear you scream! One of their promo pictures for the fifth series of Downtown Abbey featured Robert Crawley and Lady Edith standing in front of a mantelpiece, whereupon there stood a plastic bottle … oh dear oh dear!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

The recent past

We are still gradually piecing together the “recent past” tense in Spanish, and I finished off the last article with some rather repetitive examples.

I am going to start this article with similar, but somewhat less repetitive, examples: He escrito la carta. - (I have written the letter) Has estado en Inglaterra. - (You have been to England) Ha visto la película. - (S/he has seen the film) Hemos comprado un coche. - (We have bought a car).

Habéis leído el artículo. - (You (plu) have read the article).

Han hecho sus deberes. - (They have done their homework).

These sentences clearly show the changes to the verb “haber” which control the subject of each sentence, that is, whether it is “I”, “you”, “he” “she” etc. who are controlling the action of the verb.

Don’t forget that the same rules apply as before when we want to make the following simple changes to these sentences.

We can make them negative by putting “no” at the front (“no he escrito la carta” - I haven’t written the letter), and we can form a simple closed or “yes/no” question by inserting question marks and changing the tone of our voice when speaking (“¿Has estado en Inglaterra?” – Have you been to England?). Also, we can extend our “he”, “she” or “they” sentences by naming the subject (“Mi amiga ha visto la película.” My friend has seen the film. “Los niños han hecho sus deberes”. The children have done their homework).

Whilst we are still talking about the recent past, we should mention a couple of words that are often used in this context.

One is “todavía” meaning “yet” or “still” and the other is “ya” meaning “already”.

Here are the same sentences inserting these words to illustrate how they are used.

“No he escrito la carta todavía.” - (I haven’t written a letter yet).

“Todavía no he escrito una carta.” - (I still haven’t written a letter).

In case you’re wondering, these two sentences mean exactly the same thing. The only difference is one of emphasis. “¿Has estado en Inglaterra ya?” “¿Ya has estado en Inglaterra?” - (Have you already been to England?)

“Mi amiga ya ha visto la película.” “Mi amiga ha visto la película ya”. - (My friend has already seen the film) “Mi amiga no ha visto la película todavía.” - (My friend hasn’t seen the film yet.)

“Mi amiga todavía no ha visto la película”. - (My friend still hasn’t seen the film.)

Still, yet and already and tricky concepts to get our head round in English, so you should have fun thinking about these in Spanish!

A variant of “todavía” is “aún”, so we could also say: “Aún mi amiga aún no ha visto la película”.

Next week we are going to move on to looking at another use of this “recent past” tense. I’ll leave you to guess what it is. See you then.

Lion hunt is on IF YOU have ever thought about becoming more involved in worthwhile community projects, initiatives and helping those less fortunate, then the time is right, to join the Lions.

Newly elected Lion President Iain Bennett announced at the August Club business meeting, that in addition to all the excellent fund raising efforts of the Club, as this year is his third term as Lion President, he will be offering his full support to Membership Director Philip Buckman in his quest to increase the membership of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club. Philip has a number of excellent initiatives planned and Iain asked that all current members of the Club participate fully. By strange coincidence Phil was unable to attend the August meeting due to other commitments but in his absence Iain was delighted to welcome and induct a new and very enthusiastic member to the Club, and is looking forward to welcoming more in the near future. New member Tony Mackman has been attending Lions events, meetings and socials for over a year. Tony lives in Los Montesinos and his hobbies includes Golf and Motor Cycling among others.

Membership of Lions is by invitation, but any member of the public can come along to the monthly Club business meeting on the second Thursday of every month at Hotel Cabo Cervera in La Mata at 7.30pm, where they will be made most welcome.

Members of other Lions Clubs are also most welcome to attend.

Can I stop spam?

DEAR AUNTY: I am getting a huge amount of spam, and it’s mostly American, about kitchen stuff, HARP, job ops etc. There’re at least 200 every day now. Is it a virus? Any idea how I can stop it? Alison

Aunty says: ‘Spam’ emails come from the fact that your email address has been sold on by a company you have registered with, or simply picked up from a website by a ‘scanner’. There are many ways to stop this but it all depends on what email system you are using. If these emails are coming from a website you have registered to, then they should have a ‘unregister’ option, sometimes on the email.

In outlook (the new Hotmail), click on the email, and select the junk option Or you can block email addresses - assuming they are coming from the same email address.

To add any address or domain name to your Outlook.com’s list of blocked senders: Click the settings gear in your Outlook.com’s toolbar Select More mail settings from the menu that shows

Phantom emails How do I start on desktop?

HI THERE AUNTY: Can you help? In my Gmail mail box on my iPad it shows two unopened emails: when I go into my mail there is no unopened mail there. I have tried all sorts of things to get rid of them: any suggestions? Regard, Allen Aunty says: It appears as if ‘phantom’ unread emails are a common issue on iPads...very surprising that Apple has not fixed the issue.

DEAR AUNTY: I have Windows 8.1. When it started up it went straight to desktop, but I must have touched something and it went into lockscreen and I have to put my password in. How do I get back to starting at desktop? May Aunty says: Press “WIN+R” key combination to launch RUN dialog box then type gpedit.msc and press Enter.

It’ll open Group Policy Editor.

Now go to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> Personalization In right-side pane, double-click on “Do not display the lock screen” option and set its value to “Enabled”. This will disable lock screen in Windows 8.

If you want to enable lock screen again, set the value to ‘not configured’.

HDMI to display output

HELLO AUNTY: Many thanks for a very interesting column.

I have just purchased a Raspberry Pi, and would like to use the display on my laptop Via the HDMI socket to display output. Is this possible? I have a Lenovo B590, which I find excellent for my needs. Graham Aunty says: Usually the HDMI port on laptops is an OUTPUT only. This is used to connect the laptop to a large screen HDMI TV, so you can use the larger screen instead of the laptop’s small screen.

So it is unlikely your HDMI port will be an input port, but an output port, so you will not be able to use it to display the Pi on your laptop.

People are now talking about three main topics

By Tony Myles Rory - For a few years Golf has been almost boring as it searched for a matinee idol. Tiger had filled that role particularly well for many years and every tournament was attended by scores of reporters and photographers.

Television coverage was global and headlines would always follow. Then injury and personal problems removed the gloss and our idol became human. He was no longer feared and was suddenly displaying flaws that had normally beset only mortal players. And yet, whilst he slid into decline, no one came forward to claim the crown, although several have tried.

We have cheered for Luke Donald and his supporters have even created his own unique ‘LoooooooK’ call as he approached every green. Although he was very much a people’s favourite, he too stumbled and allowed others to overtake him. Adam was next claimant to the throne, but despite demonstrating incredible skills and securing several titles, he just wasn’t ‘incredible’ enough.

Then along came Rory. Could he be the ONE? Well until this year many would have doubted his credentials. But no longer. He has assumed the position and now looks like he could actually sustain that claim. If you tuned in on Saturday to our Golf Show on Bay Radio you will be aware that we have a divergence of opinion as Campbell is a fan who believes that Rory is the complete package. I think he is very close but I just wish he had been around when they were handing out charisma.

Tiger - So the fallen idol has declared himself unfit for service in the Ryder Cup and will be endeavouring to regain his fitness in time for the 2015 Majors.

Many would suggest that his recent poor performance is due to attempting to return from injury too hastily. The main question on most pundits lips is, will he ever increase the number of Major wins from the first fourteen. It wasn’t too long ago that he appeared unstoppable and, to see him a mere five shots off the lead after three days, meant that he would go on to win any event by a reasonable margin. There was little doubt about it. He was invincible. Today nobody fears him and with a new stream of younger, fitter and hungry youngsters appearing regularly on the Leaderboards, the task of winning that elusive fifteenth is not getting any easier.

The Ryder Cup - The main components of both sides have now qualified and all that remains is to determine who will be the final

three. Who will be the ‘Captain’s Pick.’?

Can we have a European Team without Ian Poulter? I am deafened by the cries of NO! From the European supporters. He brings the one element that defines the perennial advantage that we enjoy over the opposition.

He forges the team with his passion and commitment, and there are very few that would argue against him having a permanent place. Beyond that there are so many on the list and Paul McGinley will have a difficult task in choosing between the likes of Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Stephen Gallacher and Francesco Molinari. Tony M - I also noticed vast clouds of flies invading the fairways. Millions of the little b b b blighters.

Campbell - And their favourite food appears to be Golfer.

Skoda Rapid - a sensible family car WHEN MY wife visited Canada many moons ago - and before we met - she went white water rafting: she’s a brave lass! She reminded me of this scary event in her life as she sat in the Skoda Rapid that I’m testing this week.

Its name triggered the memory. An unusual name for a sensible family car, I thought as there is no way that it can relate to frightening yet invigorating water rapids. But it is quite nippy - it will hit 60mph from standstill in under 12 seconds and on to a 114mph top speed - so perhaps it relates to speed.

The Saunders family is delighted with this vehicle. Let me tell you why: diesel prices are expensive and even taking the efficiency of these engines into consideration such prices are absolutely ridiculous and unfair. So - generally cheaper petrol looks increasingly more attractive. The trouble is that so many petrol cars remain uneconomical.

Skoda has solved this problem though, by introducing a splendid tiddly 1.2-litre, 86bhp engine that returns an average of over 50mpg. I am staggered. I am even more dumfounded by the fact that it has been fitted to the Rapid, which until I read the press pack, I was sure must be a 1.6.

This is an extremely good-sized family hatchback that fits between the smaller Fabia and the larger Octavia; easily seating five adults in comfort and a whole lot of clobber in the cavernous boot. Even with my family inside, the engine delivers a more than reasonable driving experience. I will be amazed if Skoda doesn’t sell hundreds of thousands of these, especially when considering the OTR price of under £15,000.

The interior might be a little bland but there are front electric windows - the children are less likely to open the manually operated ones in the rear, so I’m all for that. There’s air conditioning, heated front seats and electrically heated and adjustable wing mirrors as you can see in the video at testdrives. biz. It also comes with a five-star safety rating.

This is a great value for money proposition introduced at just the right time for the poor motorist suffering from hugely inflated fuel prices. In fact, according to the RAC Foundation transport poverty has now hit 800,000 homes across the UK. These car-owning households are spending over a quarter of their disposable income on buying and running a vehicle. They spend £44 a week on carrelated expenses. If they were to buy this Skoda their expenses should be drastically reduced.

I wonder whether the Skoda marketing team was thinking about ‘rapid’ sales when naming this vehicle. They might just have something there…
