WITH JUST One exception, that of a music shop, all three of the upper floors are virtually closed and questions have also been raised about the actual legality of the building. The promotion of La Plasa as a centre-point for commerce and activities in Torrevieja is something that all parties seem, to varying degrees, to be in agreement on. La Plasa holds a prime position in the city centre and was mentioned in the Partido Popular Manifesto for Eduardo Dolon that they would be trying to re-open the centre to help revitalise commerce downtown. The biggest factor holding back revitalising the commercial centre is possibly that Banco Sabadell holds the keys to one third of “La Plasa” through embargoes and debts owned to the bank by former or present owners. Both Eduardo Dolon and Deputy Mayor Joaquin Albaladejo have been trying to reach some

agreements to try and revitalise the centre that has not proved to be profitable since it opened in 1995. The building has underground parking, a ground floor that trades as the city’s fish, meat and fruit market plus three upper floors. The top floor is owned by cinema chain Cines IMF who used it for some years as a film theatre. It is now abandoned, as are the other premises. Besides IMF and the bank, the City Council is listed as owner of four stores while many units on the upper floors have never been occupied. The municipality provided the land to a local developer to construct a building that would house the food market in exchange for ownership of the three upper floors and an underground car park for 50 years. After the building was completed, apparently numerous shortcomings became evident and in a short time, those who opened businesses on the upper floors, closed their doors. Continued on page 8
