Two policemen arrested

A COURT in Torrevieja has imprisoned two law enforcement agents from Huelva who were arrested in a drug sweep. The Court of Instruction No. 2 of Torrevieja ordered their detention, without bail. One is a Guardia Civil officer and the other an agent of the Policia Local whom police arrested during a drug trafficking operation, as reported in a statement by the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV).

In both cases, the judge ordered detention, without bail in this case that has been declared secret because of its very nature and those accused. The Valencian court announced that the Guardia Civil officer is accused of crimes against public health, membership of a criminal organization and revealing secrets; while the agent of the Policia Local in Huelva was arrested for crimes against public health and belonging to a criminal organization.

The two arrests, was in connection with a drug operation in which 12 others were also arrested.

The drug operation was conducted by the Drug Unit and Organized Crime (UDYCO) of the National Police of Huelva, the group Narcotics Cartagena (Murcia) and Judiciary Police. A total of 14 people were arrested and more than two tons of hashish was seized in Tavira, Portugal. The operation has dismantled a criminal organization that could be operating in several countries. Among those arrested in the province of Huelva, is a Policia Local officer who has been suspended without pay by the Madrid City Council. The arrest of the officer occurred last Wednesday and the Consistory indicated that he would remain suspended without pay throughout the legal process and fired from the police if the conviction goes against him.

by Keith Nicol A NEW surgery technique developed at Torrevieja Hospital aims to eradicate cancer cells and prevent “recurrences in the surgery area” for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

Torrevieja Hospital uses a specialized surgical technique for pancreatic interventions of which they are performing 25 operations each year. The technique, called “Extended Pancreaticoduodenectomy” is designed to eradicate cancer cells and prevent “recurrences in the area of surgery.”

This technique has been developing since the establishment of the specialised unit, almost four years ago. The Hospital pointed out; “some clinical studies suggest that hospitals that treat a relatively high number of cancer patients report lower mortality rates than those hospitals that treat fewer patients. This is the same group when it comes to overall survival and disease-free survival.

perience of surgeons and multidisciplinary teams caring for these patients that make them experts how they treat.”

by Jack Troughton CONVICTED FRAUDSTER Rafael Aguilera will be ‘invited’ to repay the losses of an English couple over an ‘off plan’ property nightmare or face a second court ordeal.

The property developer already faces jail unless he pays compensation to British couple Andrew and Kate Wilford, from Colwyn Bay, over their lost Spanish dream home following a nine year battle.

Aguilera pocketed 174,366€ in staged payments for the house at Trampolin Solera near Murcia but remortgaged the home at an inflated value and later sold it to a third party.

And earlier this month Murcia’s criminal court of appeal upheld a guilty verdict and Judge Africa Durante Leon warned he faces jail unless he repays the cash, more than 52,300€ in interest, and the couple’s legal costs.

However, Andrew Wilford intends to twist his arm to win the repayment. He says he will write to Aguilera and offer the developer a deal – pay up or they will activate a second case, alleging the developer forged Andrew’s signature agreeing to the mortgage application.

“I will pursue this man to the ends of the earth,” Andrew told RTN. “I have set out the offer in a letter I intend to send him over this second action for fraud alleging he forged my signature on the mortgage documents – I have written if he doesn’t settle the debt, I will bring this second charge to court.

“I don’t necessarily want to see him in prison, there’s no mileage in it for us – we want the money – money talks and bulls**t walks!

If he pays us, I will drop this second action.”

SCAM Andrew said they discovered the scam when they went to make a final payment on their villa in 2008 – only to be advised not to complete the deal as a builder’s mortgage had been granted by Cam Bank. Aguilera later sold the nearly completed home to another family.

And he said the bank had granted similar loans to the developer on other homes at Trampolin Solera and sister developments

Trampolin Hills and Trampolin Royal Dreams – allegedly helped by bank insiders wanting to earn commission on the mortgages.

“I understand this is a man who has stolen 150 million Euros from the bank and CAM has had to write off the loss,” added Andrew. “You have to wonder what they have done with the money.”

The courts are now searching for the developer’s assets, while Andrew and Kate’s lawyers are pushing for the sentencing to be imposed.

However, Andrew said they were frustrated at the time it had taken to settle the matter – which dates back to 2005 – in the courts, despite Aguilera taking very appeal route possible.

“For the life of me I cannot understand why it has taken so long, it was not a huge step to make a judgement that this was fraud,” he said. “He sold it to me, mortgaged it and then sold it to someone else.

JUDGEMENT “I just want to see the back of it all. It has gone on and on and on...but I have to keep going, at the end of the day this judgement says I have more than 250,000 reasons to do so.”

Andrew said there were other victims who had lost out through investing in the three developments “people a bit like me who went out to Spain, went to Trampolin, where the sun was shining and thought it was a lovely place to retire.”

Unfortunately, he said the property crash meant values had tumbled and if the developer wanted to sell property to pay debts “he will have to sell half of Murcia.”

He believes he will be offered property in exchange for the debt. “No way! The judgement is made in terms of Euros and not villas.

“If he ripped off CAM Bank to the tune of 150 million Euros, are we really meant to think that he has got nothing?”

Andrew said despite the legal victory he was not yet celebrating. “The satisfaction will come when we have the pennies in our bank account.

“As Churchill said, this is not the end; it’s not the end of the beginning; it is the beginning of the end.”

Guardamar’s main street redevelopment AN EXTENSIVE remodelling programme has just begun on the main street of Guardamar del Segura that is designed to attract more foot traffic and restrict the amount of cars.

The redevelopment of the Main Street provides more space for pedestrians and effectively will double the width of the sidewalks, while parking will be restricted to fifteen minutes during business hours. Residents and businesses will unfortunately have to suffer through the festive season and until the end of February. Work should cease throughout the period of the Christmas holidays from 24th December to 7th January 2015. The project includes the renovation of sidewalks from Plaza de la Constitución to Plaza Llauradors.

Podemos quickly sent out a Press Release denouncing the graffiti and demanding that the Town Hall remove it. by Jan Gamm THE DUCHESS of Alba, Spain’s wellloved and most wealthy aristocrat, has passed away in Seville aged 88.

Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart was taken into hospital on Sunday with pneumonia and gastroenteritis complicated by possible heart problems. There were reports that she was making a recovery and she returned home on Tuesday to be with her husband, 64-year-old Alfonso Diez, and her children but died on Thursday.

ECCENTRIC As well as being renowned for her enormous wealth, which included countless treasures and works of art as well as opulent palaces and country estates, the Duchess was known for

her many eccentricities, her Bohemian outlook and her warm heart that won her a special place in Spanish hearts.

Facua estimates electric costs 3.3% more than a year ago

THE CONSUMER organisation Facua has estimated the average cost of electric bills in 2014 at 80€ compared with 77.98€ in late 2012 and 77.37€ in 2013. Yet the government’s estimate confirmed by Energy Minister José Manuel Soria shows a decline in price over that period of 3.7%. Facua is accusing the government of manipulating figures to show a favourable result for the power sector.

Spokesman Ruben Sanchez said: “We believe the government is playing with the numbers which is unfortunate and cynical, taking into account the data of fuel poverty and families’ electricity being cut off every year due to their inability to pay.”

Chinese fraudsters arrested AT LEAST 20 people have been arrested this week in a three-year operation targeting alleged fraud through Chinese imports to Chinese Shops in Fuenlabrada, Madrid.

Those arrested, who are mostly Spanish and Chinese residing or doing business in Madrid, Alicante and Almeria, are accused of crimes against the Treasury, money laundering; criminal gang membership and forgery. The organisation would have made more than 15,000 shipments of goods in the past five years. A number of computers as well as 400,000€ in cash were seized.

Spain’s Treasury lists 2,000 large defaulters THE MINISTER of Finance and Public Administration, Cristobal Montoro, has listed around 2,000 high value defaulters prior to reform of the Tax Code still in preparation.

The list names citizens who systematically fail to meet their payment obligations. The list equates to a collection estimated at €5.508 million. Montoro insists that this collection will be “relentless.” The minister said priorities were measures that would reduce bottlenecks in production processes, debase taxes, control spending, encourage savings and stimulate job creation.

By Irena Bodnarec THE BENIDORM Tourism Foundation have come under criticism by the ADCV – Designers Association of Valencia for launching an online competition to design a new logo for the town. Foundation Director Leire Bilbao launched the competition on Monday, which offers the winning design a 3000€ cash prize and two runners up 600€ each - in addition to another category of new slogan with a prize of 1,500€. Entry is via the website Talents United which has in the region of 3000 registered users in 40 different countries. However, a spokesperson for the designers association said that the competition “undermines the profession” and that the correct procedure would be to hire and pay a group of qualified professionals who would submit proposals dependent of the specifications. In reply Miss Bilbao, speaking on behalf of the Tourism Foundation said that they understood the Designer Associations explanation and argument but did not agree with it, saying that by launching the competition via the web gives it an international dimension and that they will still continue with the competition!

by Keith Nicol ON WEDNESDAY, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon visitied the ADIEM centre and congratulated one and all for winning an important award. The centre has been awarded the European Seal of Excellence AENOR, a significant award that, as Mayor Dolon said; “confirms the good work, effort and dedication of each and every one of the employees, highlighting the high quality of service offered to the more than 80 users in your facility that attend here daily.”

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, was accompanied by the Regional Secretary for Personal Autonomy and Dependency, Manuel Escolano director of AENOR in Valencia, Salvador Ibáñez, President of ADIEM Vega Baja, Gertrude Marcos, ONG Councilwoman, Mamen Mateo, and the Councillor of Social Welfare, Tomás Ballester.

The ceremony took place in the Centre for Rehabilitation and Social Integration (CRIS) of Torrevieja, where the ADIEM European Seal of Excellence in the EFQM 400+, the highest level of recognition for excellence in Quality Management Systems that can be obtained in Europe, was presented. Eduardo Dolon congratulated ADIEM for winning this important award and highlighted the enormous amount of activity in the CRIS and the importance of continuing to work with and investing in improving the services provided to those suffering with some form of mental illness.

Risk of drowning ACCORDING TO the World Health Organisation (WHO) around 372,000 people drown each year worldwide, equivalent to 40 victims per hour. The highest rate of drowning occurs in children under five years old and also men whose risk is double that of women. More than half are under 25 years old. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, insists that this form of death can be prevented with stringent controls and regulations put in place, with the exception of those caused by national disasters such as floods, fires and hurricanes. In fact the actual number of people who drown due to national disasters cannot be quantified. Among recommendations for helping to limit the risk of drowning are the installation of barriers near water; providing safe areas for children to swim; teaching children the basics of water safety and training in water rescue and first aid such as resuscitation procedures.

Europe to act on voting

by Jack Troughton THE EUROPEAN Parliament has promised action over EU countries who deny citizens a vote in national elections.

Local politician Jacqui Cotterill travelled to Brussels to present a petition over the problem of British expats who are disenfranchised after moving to EU member states.

Jacqui, who is Deputy Mayor of Parcent, highlighted how Britain’s current 15-year rule that barred British citizens a vote in elections after they had lived away from the UK for that time.

She underlined how this would exclude expats from any ‘in-out’ referendum as the proposed poll – as under the present rules; a person needed a national vote to take part.

And she also outlined how long term residents in EU states lived, worked paid taxes and had a stake in the future of the country of residence, but had no right to vote. Jacqui stressed this affected thousands of migrant workers – and particularly second generation emigrants who came of age to vote but had no democratic rights.

She told the influential petitions committee one solution could be similar to that of European elections where legal residents had the choice of voting in their home country or their country of residence. This step had been discussed by the legal affairs committee and the 2013 EU Citizenship Report had

The European Commission outlined the steps already taken in the citizenship Report and its correspondence with London. In addition, it was stated it was individual governments that had the 2competence” to decide who should vote in national elections.

The Committee’s Chair Cecilia Wikstrom thanked Jacqui for her petition on such an important subject.

She proposes the petition will remain open – allowing further debate – and invited Vice President of the European Commission – whose portfolio includes fundamental rights – to discuss the petition.

The committee is also to write to the commission to clarify which other countries limited the right to a national vote and to also write directly to the British government.

Jacqui said she looked forward to further action by Brussels. “I am extremely pleased with the positive response from the Petitions Committee and MEPs not present who have also given their support to the petition.

“I look forward to the further steps suggested by the committee and hope that the pressure for change will be kept up so all European citizens will be able to enjoy the most democratic right to vote in national elections.2

By Irena Bodnarec BENIDORM COUNCIL has submitted a request to ECOFIN – the European Council of Economic and Financial Affairs, for funding to complete 19 projects within the town. The remodeling and infrastructure improvements total 70 million euros and if any of the projects are selected would stand to receive a 50% contribution of the cost. Among the main projects are the redevelopment of the Avd Mediterraneo – 18.5 million; Implementation of phase two of the Poniente promenade – 16 million; Re-development of Avd Jaime 1 – 5 million as well as upgrading the flood water network which proved insufficient in the recent torrential downpours. In order to qualify for the cofinancing program the projects must be greater than 1 million euros, commence before the start of 2018 and be of ´high public interest´ and be a boost to economic growth in the area. However, the Councillor of Planning, Juan Vicente Ivorra criticized the short time frame given to submit the projects. An email was received from the regional office in Valencia on 11th November, with the deadline of 13th at 2pm – exacerbated by the fact that it was a Bank Holiday in Benidorm on the 11th & 12th therefore only giving the departments technical team 6 hours.

Monica Lorente recovering after surgery THE PP spokesperson in Orihuela, Monica Lorente, was discharged from hospital on Thursday following an appendectomy performed shortly after she was admitted to the Vega Baja Hospital in the early hours of Monday morning.

Sra Lorente is four months’ pregnant –she and her partner, ex-Environment Councillor Fernando Modrego, are expecting a son in the spring of 2015.

Gastrointestinal problems are easily spread, and one of the most common ways to do this is through contact via the hands.” Luckily in most cases the infection lasts only a few days. Health authorities recommend frequent hand washing to combat the spread of stomach viruses in the region.

All are innocent in their own eyes WHERE WE live is a one way street with parking on the left side of the road. On the right side is for owners to drive into their property.

There are always cars illegally driving down this one way street going the wrong way. Also numerous cars and trucks illegally park, blocking property owners from entering their property.

It seems they do not know they are breaking the law. It seems no one knows they are doing wrong. And it seems all are innocent in their own eyes.

One day I got up the courage to ask a person who had been illegally parked for over an hour in front of our property to move his vehicle, but instead of an apology, he defiantly made an excuse by telling me he was only parking there for five minutes. Two hours later he left, without a hint of contrition.

Perhaps he did not know he was lying. Perhaps he did not know how to tell time. Perhaps the ones driving illegally down the one way street do not know, even though signs clearly show it is a one way street.

Perhaps the ones parked illegally also do not know.

No one knows when they are doing something wrong. But when it comes to telling other people how they should be running their lives, the same is a know-it-all. The one who does not know he is doing wrong is the one who is a know-it-all when telling others what they should be doing. It seems so many do not know they are doing wrong, but when it comes to giving advice they know everything.

Another happy and satisfied patient I READ in last week’s paper that Torrevieja Hospital had won four top awards, one of which was for Digestive Surgery. I am just recovering from keyhole surgery in that department to repair my Giant Hiatus Hernia. They certainly deserve that award. The Hungarian surgeon was extremely good, as was the Anesthetist.

The nurses in admission, theatre, recovery, and on the ward were exemplary and I was treated with great care and respect at all times, in a nice bright room for two and a half days with my own bathroom and regular attention. My surgeon came up to see me each morning to examine me and ask how I was feeling. My bathroom was checked twice a day and my room cleaned once a day by friendly staff who always said “hola.”

I did not experience the food as I was on liquids

only but the catering staff who brought me soup and water and fruit juice were also very pleasant.

Most of the nurses were able to speak to me in English and were very efficient.

We are very fortunate to have this wonderful hospital. This is my second experience as I had eye surgery there last year, also many visits to see various consultants in Outpatients, and always treated with respect and care.

Nobody should have any worry about attending there. I know some complain but we are foreigners here and they treat us very well.

I hope if people have a problem that they would address it politely to the appropriate department and not just write to the local paper.

They leave you high and dry

I WOULD like to warn your readers when booking a car in the UK to watch out for a company based in Hastings. We hired a car from this company which we found online.

They quoted UK£99 per week with no hidden extras. We were staying for a month and because their website was quite impressive we decided to make the reservation.

This Company doesn’t tell you but they charge you for a full tank of petrol and charge a so-called refundable deposit of UK£500 which then becomes impossible to get back.

Three months later and many phone calls and emails to the company where they promised the refund would be actioned straight away, we in the end had to resort to calling our credit card company for advice and they refunded the deposit to us.

If you go on line and look at www.consumeraffairs.com there are quite a few complaints regarding this company, including advice that you do not want to break down as they leave you high and dry!

A 2,000€ donation was made to charity Friends of the Children of EMAUS which supports children looked after in family units across the region.

The shop’s new President Adrienne Marshall said the donation – handed to

Carole Saunders - was part of Christmas ‘giveaway’ which included supporting the Salvation Army, victims of domestic violence, and the Red Cross.

“I have been in business a week as president,” she told RTN. “My priority at the moment is organising a Christmas party for the girls – they work so hard for nothing all year long and it is the only way to say ‘thank you’ to everyone.”

However, she said once the festive season was over the shop team would

“get cracking” raising money for charities. “In difficult times it would be great to do as well next year as we have done in 2014, or raise a little bit extra.”

Currently the shop is open between 10am to 1pm Monday to Friday, but Adrienne said there were moves to open on Saturday mornings.

And new volunteers to join the team would also be welcomed – anyone with a little time to spare can call her on 634 388 436.

OVER THE last two weeks the ITV ´Lorraine´ show, part of the breakfast programme Good Morning Britain, has broadcast the interviews and recordings made with Sherrie Hewson. The actress was in the resort throughout August, together with film crew, talking to a number of British ex-pats who had made the move and settled here in Benidorm for a life in the sun. She spoke frankly of her personal experience – she lived in the Costa del Sol many years ago and the pitfalls of the ´Sun and Sangria´ lifestyle. On Monday´s programme she spoke with Christine Climent, owner of Benidorm Palace and probably Benidorm´s biggest successful story. Sherrie had a rare behind the scenes sneak of rehearsals of the new EFEX show and spoke at length with Christine, asking her views and opinions on the story behind her success where often many fail. Her irrefutable response was integration with the Spanish, learning the language – a must, and a lot of hard work! Originally from Widnes, in the North West of England, Christine came on a one week family holiday in 1971 and is still here - but now married, a mother and grandmother.

Russian vision for Benidorm multimillion cable car A RUSSIAN entrepreneur plans to construct an ambitious multi-million Euro cable car installation traversing the Sierra Helada.

by Jan Gamm Benidorm has tourist attractions in spades – sparkling sea, sun, sand and restaurants to die for.

The one thing it does not have - yet - is a cable car!

COMPLICATED The Russian businessman at the helm of the project is seeking investors to fund the €21 million initiative. And the construction process promises to be complicated due to the terrain, the necessity for permits, surveys and environmental studies vital to obtaining approval.

Talks have already taken place with the Council and Benidorm’s mayor, Agustin Navarro, who is said to be keen on the idea ‘in principle’, in response to an impressive detailed report presented to the council detailing required permissions from various administrations and legal considerations to consider in a project of such magnitude. Navarro pointed out that although the plans are ambitious the impact to the environment would be minimal and with enormous benefits to the city.

LA CRUZ The operating station for the cable car installation would be at La Cruz Punta Llisera and would involve purchasing 11,000 square metres of privately owned land in the area at around €2 million. The report indicates that land owners have already been approached. The General Plan would have to be modified to enable the cable car construction to go ahead on land authorised for the building of private homes.

Plans include a ‘food court’ to provide an added source of revenue and a major interest for tourists while they admire the magnificent views.

UNDER WRAPS Interested investors already in negotiations are so far ‘under wraps’. Spain’s top tourist resort certainly has the spectacular views associated with cable car destinations all over the world. Should the project be approved, construction will begin in 2015 with a completion date as yet unspecified.

Solution for Red Palm Weevil rejected by PP A PROPOSAL commissioned by the department of Agriculture Food and Environment to eliminate the Red Palm Weevil was presented in Congress this week and supported by all parties yet rejected by the Partido Popular. The strategy outlined a pilot project to be carried out in Elche before being launched state-wide. The deputy of Compromís-equo in Congress, Joan Baldoví, branded the PP’s attitude as “unfortunate,” taking into account the extent of the infestation and the particularly pressing need for action in Elche, home to the largest palm grove in Europe.

Reach Out Christmas Appeal Lorraine Whitney, Santa and Pauline Lane, all from Reach Out: well, except for Santa of course…

by Keith Nicol ALL THE three’s: yes it’s just 33 days until Christmas and while most of us may be planning our Christmas Day, for the homeless and underprivileged, it’s not such a joyous event. To try and put a few smiles onto the faces of those who find themselves in times of need, local Torrevieja based NGO, the Charity Reach Out is once again trying to give the homeless and the needy something special on this festive day.

Their fund raising efforts got off to an excellent start with their Christmas Fair that once again was deemed a great success. The third annual “Reach Out” Christmas Fair at the Marina Bar, Torrevieja, proved to be the biggest and the best. Kicking off at 2.0pm last Saturday, the crowds were eager to spend their money and make this the most lucrative fair yet, raising an outstanding 1,435€ for the charity.

Organisers Lorraine and David Whitney, with their trusty sidekicks Pauline and Bob Lane, went all out to make this year’s fair a success with a Tombola, Raffle, Name the Bear, Guess the number of Sweets in the Jar, cake stalls, clothes, bric-a-brac, Mini Auction, plus the other independent stalls were all kept extremely busy; even Santa himself found the time to call in and give out sweets to the children.

Rita and Dave of the Marina Bar, great supporters of the charity said; ‘We have never had such an attendance at the bar at

any other event” and together with their brilliant staff and helpers kept the crowds well fortified.

Organiser David said “Thanks must also go to Pat Tennent, Jennie Lane, Judy Wiggins, volunteers from Reach Out shops 1 and 2 and a mention to British Bedding for their support and everybody who has helped with this brilliant event. We hope to repeat this event again next year too.”

Reach Out is now beginning to gather special items for Christmas and Three Kings gifts for the children of local families living in poverty. As well as toys and gift items, the charity is hoping to make up special hampers for families.

Reach Out volunteers Carol Chambers and Margaret Wood are overseeing the collection of hamper items and together with the team of volunteers, are hoping to spread some Christmas cheer to families in need.

The hamper ‘wish list’ is as follows: Tinned meat/fish, cheese, coffee, tea, herbal tea, nesquick/cola cao, soft drinks, fruit juice, sweets, chocolate, nuts/snacks, biscuits (sweet and savoury), jam, honey, special toiletries for men and women.

Running against Diabetes

A RACE and walk under the slogan ‘With Diabetes You Can’ took place last weekend with additional informational and training activities, raising awareness, support and diagnosis for those potentially affected, within the context of a fun day. The event was organised by the Diabetic Association. 250 runners took part with 300 supporters, under the baton of the Athletics Club. Vicente Sanchez, president of the Diabetes Association, hailed the event marking World Diabetes Day 2014 a “great success,” acknowledging the valuable role of the hard-working volunteers who made the race possible.

Do you think your pension is too small to transfer?

Think again!

I RECENTLY met with a client who had never considered a pension transfer because he had a company pension scheme and was only with his employer for 3 years. He guessed that his pension fund would be worth around 3k to 5k and not worth transferring.

AFTER CONTACTING his company and applying for a pension transfer quotation we found out that the value of his pension fund was actually 37,000 pounds. He decided to QROPS his pension and take a lump sum. Another client thought his pension was a moderate 25,000 pounds and after investigation it turned out to be worth over 90,000 pounds. He decided to buy a car and pay off some debts.

I am staggered at how valuable these seemingly small pension pots are. Time and time again I see so called “small pension pots” turn out to be large pension funds. Often, the revelation of how much a pension fund is worth means that a client can retire early, pay off a mortgage or create a business.

Another client of mine who was in a company pension scheme for 8 years had a pension transfer value of 120,000 pounds. She was amazed at the value of her fund and this has allowed her to stop working and now fully retire. Never discount these small pensions. It is important to find out how much you are worth!

have a pension that is too small to transfer.

by Jack Troughton BRITISH EXPATS were keen to share top tips for making a successful start to a new life in Spain when asked by a British Consulate team from Alicante.

Obtaining clear legal advice and learning some basic Spanish were two of the most important things – according to shoppers at Iceland Supermarkets.

Asked ‘what is your advice for someone moving to Spain?’ expats were also keen to tell people to do their homework and to try renting a home before buying a place in the sun.

The Consulate team visited three

branches of Iceland on the Costa Blanca to reach out to communities and pass on official advice about a range of issues, including how to register for healthcare and how to register as a resident.

Shoppers were also encouraged to keep up with the latest information via social media, using the ‘Brits living in Spain’ Facebook page and Twitter’s @BritsliveSpain.

The team asked more than 100 people about their lives in Spain and their tips for newcomers as they spoke to people who might not normally come in contact with the British Consulate.

Vice Consul Liz Bell, who was with the team at the Torrevieja store, said: “It was great to meet so many people and hear from them what helps make a life a success in Spain.

“I was really encouraged to see that the top tips were around being properly registered as residents here in Spain, getting one the ‘Padron’, and making sure healthcare was sorted.”

She said Iceland Overseas Supermarkets had been “really supportive” of the Consulate initiative and thanked the company for letting the team use the stores to meet customers – and hear their views.

SMURFIT KAPPA has opened a new plant in Ibi creating 60 jobs for local workers. The factory is dedicated to the production of packaging for liquids against an investment of €28 million. The new intake of 60 brings the total workforce at the factory to 130 employees. The plant is located in the technology park at Ciudad del Juguete occupying a plot of 40,000 square metres, 17,000 square metres of which correspond to manufacturing processes, mainly producing the handy ‘bag in a box’ packaging used for wine. The opening of the factory was attended by President of the Consell, Alberto Fabra and Ibi’s mayor, Rafael Serralta. The Dublin-based Smurfit Kappa Group is a world leading paper packaging manufacturer with 41,000 employees and 350 plants worldwide.

Eduardo Dolon visits Age Concern

by Keith Nicol ON THE occasion of the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Age Concern Offices, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon visited the centre to see for himself all the good work that goes on there.

Dolon was accompanied by Councillor for Foreigners, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, and of Social Welfare, Tomás Ballester. They visited the headquarters of Age Concern, located in La Siesta to meet with President Maureen Payne. To celebrate their anniversary, the association is having a week of open houses to introduce their solidarity and charitable activities. Currently they have 150

volunteers, at the headquarters about 75 people, and about 25 very old British residents who are visited in their homes, helping to take care of them by preparing the food and accompanying them to medical appointments in the Health Centre.

Age Concern has another team of volunteers who visit the homes of the Third Age of Torrevieja.

The mayor of Torrevieja noted that, as well as being a example of solidarity, the association contributes greatly to society in Torrevieja without asking for anything in return. Age Concern is dedicated to the care of the elderly and sick and along with being a drop in centre and hav-

ing many different activates for people to take part in, volunteers also perform such actions such as home help, escort patients to appointments, library services, courses in Spanish and English and various craft workshops.

Age Concern is a British association created during World War I, whose purpose was to assist orphans and widows of war, although at present its main mission in the world is to care and assist senior Eduardo Ages. APAH say that’s to the Mayor FACED WITH the possibility of having to postpone their annual Dog Show for a second time, Pilar de la Horadada’s Mayor stepped in and saved the day by saying “The show must go on.”

Thus APAH Animal Rescue Charity began their Charity Dog Show on Sunday 9th November by taking the unusual step of thanking the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada for allowing their show to take place. Two days earlier, officers of the Council had told members of APAH that for the second time in two months, they were cancelling the event. The reason given was a bureaucratic oversight, which meant the lack of some paperwork that officers said it was necessary to have in place. However, taking a minimum of two weeks to obtain, it would have been impossible to comply

with their demands 48 hours before the event.

The prospect of cancelling the show again for a second time; when it would have been impossible to notify anyone was horrendous and APAH were extremely relieved when the mayor of Pilar intervened; saying that he didn’t want such a large amount of people inconvenienced in such a manner. APAH spokesperson said: “It was a great relief and very refreshing to find a mayor who allowed common sense to triumph over Town Hall bureaucracy.”

The Dog Show took place in the Carpa Municipal in Pilar, and APAH welcomed a record number of visitors. A positive effort had been made beforehand to notify the Spanish community of Pilar about the Show and APAH were re-

warded by seeing many Spanish people enjoying their first experience of a Charity Dog Show.

The amount raised on the day was 1,715€, all of which will be used by APAH for the dogs and cats in their care, and they wish to thank everyone who went along to the show, not only for being there, but also for the wonderful response and comments which have been given to them in the days since the event.

A lovely little Dachshund called Oscar, who was entered by his owner as ‘a bit of fun’, stunned her owner by going home with a bunch of rosettes and a trophy. She promises she will be back next year to see if he can retain the title. APAH hope to hold their next Show at the same venue in April 2015, and have promised that ‘all’ the demands made by the Town Hall will be complied with in plenty of time.

by Keith Nicol THE CUCARACHA Club is more than half completed with two more busy weeks of production ahead of the cast and crew before heading into the final stretch.

Torrevieja’s first ever crowd funded film is the brainchild of lead actor, producer, scriptwriter and sometimes head chef, Billie Anthony Gaddess who has been burning the midnight oil to ensure everything is completed before Christmas.

The latest ‘star’ to put their backing behind the film project is none other than Torrevieja’s Sportsman of the Year, three time Spanish lightweight Boxing Champion, Emiliano Casal. Playing himself in a cameo role, Emiliano filmed his first scenes on Tuesday on location at the Venture Fleet workshop in Los Montesinos. Emiliano said he was looking forward to doing a spot of acting for the first time and hopes that the film can be a springboard to future productions for the area.

The three-time Spanish Champion is presently in training to box for the European Union Lightweight Belt. Last month the Argentine-born fighter was named as the official challenger to fight champion, Belgian Jean Pierre Bauwens, the man who was defeated by Ruben Nieto, with the same

title at stake but the superlight category.

Emiliano is in Torrevieja until the end of December when he returns to Norway for winter training, returning after the New Year to ready himself for the championship bout early in 2015.

THE EXPRESS airport bus service between Torrevieja and the El Altet airport continues to grow in popularity.

Through to the end of October 2014, a total of 74,393 people have used this service from January 1st. On Monday, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, reported that during the first ten months of 2014, the Express Passenger Transport service between Torrevieja and Alicante Airport saw an increase of 17.4% over the same period of 2013, when the total was 63,320 users.

The mayor added that during October , 7,717 people used the service, with 3,875 passengers travelling between Torrevieja and the airport, while 3,842 picked up the bus at the airport. Last October, 2013, a total of 7,198 people used the service, showing a rise of 7.2%.

The bus service runs 365 days a year with an upturn in use noted since the Elche Taxi drivers took over a monopoly of the Airport taxi system. The route taken from Torrevieja to and from Alicante Airport, is a direct route, without stops and follows the CV-905. It features an 8-way service 365 days a year between Torrevieja and the airport every odd hour from 7am with the last bus at 9pm, and from the airport on the even hours starting at 8am with the last bus to Torrevieja at 10pm. The run takes around 50 minutes and follows the motorway to avoid possible hold-ups during the summer and holiday periods.

Ticket Price is 6.92€, Children under four years are free (ID required) and Pensioners receive a 30% discount.

Discounts require accreditation by showing your Social Security or to prove that you are a pensioner, you must be over 65 and present your NIE, DNI or residence card, which must confirm that you are a resident of the community of Valencia.

Sweet Peas for spring colour need sowing now

SWEET PEAS, ‘lathyrus odoratus’ are amongst the most useful of Spring annuals, grown within mixed beds; up walls or fences; in large pots supported by canes; intertwined into later flowering climbers and on dedicated cane frames. They can also be fitted into your programme of crop rotation on the vegetable plot providing colourful flowers for cutting; the attraction of beneficial insects; a wind break for young vegetable seedlings and the building up of nitrogen in the soil for follow on crops. Dwarf varieties can be grown in pots, window boxes and at the front of mixed flower beds.

Decide on the types of sweet pea that you plan to plant.

The normal climbing varieties go to a height of around 2m or the dwarf bush varieties. Also whether you plan to grow the popular annual varieties or some of the everlasting types. There are dozens of varieties now available in all shades of single or mixed colours: don’t be surprised if you create a new mixed colour variety with cross pollination from retained seed.

Purchase good seeds to start with to eventually be able to pass the excess on to friends. Unfortunately the choice of seeds available in garden centres in Spain is limited - consider buying from the UK specialists Robert Bolton and Son. Plant directly in the ground or in pots from mid-November to December. The earlier you plant the earlier the spring display, particularly important if you plan to plant in the vegetable plot and want to plant follow on crops as soon as they stop flowering: they are frost hardy.

Sweet peas do best in a rich well-drained soil, so prepare for planting: In the open ground. Rake a shallow trench and work in well rotted compost or manures to the top twenty

centimetres of soil.

In pots. Prepare a potting mix comprising 60% rich soil, 30% peat substitute and 10% coarse sand. At same time prepare the beds for planting out plantlets as mentioned.

Before planting seeds soak them in water overnight.

Some varieties germinate faster if the seeds are filed. Read and follow the instructions on the packets carefully.

Plant seeds two to three centimetres deep in the garden and pots/boxes. Sow seeds in the garden in rows or patches. Sow in a trench or in holes placed 10 – 15cm apart, three seeds to each hole. Sow seeds 3 – 5cm apart in pots and seed boxes.

Give the seeds protection as soon as they are sown.

Cover outside seed beds with netting to protect from birds, especially pigeons.

Place mouse traps in the greenhouse or cold frame and near outdoor rows to prevent losses from hibernating field mice that come out to collect food on a warm day.

Snails and slugs find young sweet pea plants a delicacy so place a proprietary killer or comfrey leaves around the seed beds and pots.

The raising of plantlets from seed means it can be easier to protect the young seedlings; over wintering vegetable crops and flowering plants can be left in the ground until the end of March before clearing to plant out the plantlets; and flower beds can be cleared and cleaned up during the January annual clean up before the sweet peas are planted out. However plants from directly sown seeds are often the first to flower.

Keep the soil damp at all times but do not cause the soil to be over-wet or waterlogged.

Feed the young plants and maturing plants fortnightly with an organic fertilizer or a mixed comfrey/nettle feed if preparing your own organic feeds.

When seedlings have three sets of leaves, nip off the top of the plants including the top pair of leaves. This will stimulate lateral shoots and bushy plants.

Watch out for aphids, treating immediately with a soap/ water spray.

Once flowers form cut regularly and deadhead uncut flower heads. To collect good seeds for next year select and label a plant or two of each colour, allowing some early flowers to go to seed rather than dead heading. Let the pods dry on the plants but not twist and open naturally.

Complete the drying process in a deep sided box in the sun. We suggest deep sided as seeds can be shot some distance when dry pods burst open.

Getting the best deal on your currency exchange when selling your property in Spain

WHEN I sell my house in Spain, what is the best way to maximise the amount of Sterling I receive into my UK bank account? Secondly, how can I ascertain the amount of Sterling I will receive given the completion on my property is six weeks away?

THIS QUESTION is interesting because when using a Spanish bank to exchange the Euros to Sterling it is not only the rate but also the fees that have to be considered. Typically, charges can be up to 1% for simply depositing the draft from the notary and transferring the Euros out. Add to this the rate of exchange and you really could be losing out.

Using a currency company such as Moneycorp is a way to ensure that you are receiving the most competitive exchange rate. However, we can also save client’s money on the bank fees too, definitely ensuring more Sterling arrives into your UK bank account.

For the second part of your question there is of course no way of predicting at what level the £/€

rate will be in 6 weeks’ time. Although the past week has definitely seen a slight improvement for Euro sellers, six weeks is a long time in the currency market! Who keeps the use of the home?

DEAR LAWYER, My wife and I are British residents in Spain, we are going to divorce.

We wish to establish a shared custody for our common child. We live in a house owned 100% by myself, my wife has no properties. If we do not reach an agreement and end up going to court, can the court force me to let my wife to continue to live in my house ?

DEAR READER, thank your for your legal consultation.

It is very important for you to try and reach a suitable agreement for all parties, which specially protects the children of the marriage.

In response to your above inquiry, we will not on this occasion cover the maintenance between spouses, or maintenance payments or support to minor children, we are going to focus solely on the allocation of the use of the family home.

When custody is attributed to only one parent (father or mother), normally this parent will be awarded the use of the family home, to use it together with the children, as specified in Article 96 of the Spanish Civil Code, which literally says: “In the absence of agreement between spouses

approved by the Court, the use of the family home and the objects of ordinary use would be for the children and the spouse in whose company they stay.”

If there are several children and one stays with one parent and another with the other parent, the same article says that “the court shall decide the appropriate”.

Regarding the attribution of use of the family house to a spouse who is not the owner of the property, in cases of joint or shared custody, there is no established rule in Spain, or even clear court precedents regarding what would happen. In a recent court decision, the Supreme Court stated that it is upto “the judge to decide as appropriate.”

Cinderella Panto comes to the Costa Blanca

ROJALES PANTOMIME’S ‘Cinderella’ will be at ‘The Christmas Shop’ in San Luis at 11am on Saturday 29th November – and Santa will be there so bring your wish list!

Orihuela Costa Poppy Appeal continues to grow

By Keith Nicol NOT CONTENT with just topping last year’s Poppy Appeal total, The Royal British Legion team on the Orihuela Costa have easily exceeded the 2013 amount. Last year the Branch raised almost 25,000€, which accounted for 15% of the Spain District North’s total while this year, the enormous job of organising the local count swung effortlessly into motion at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras last Sunday morning.

The Poppy Collection boxes, gathered in during the previous few days, were distributed amongst the thirty volunteers, and with the help of a recently purchased ‘coin counting machine’ the task quickly

got underway. ‘The machine made it much easier this year’ said Chairman and local Poppy Coordinator Keith Carter.

‘This is the first time that we have used it and we no longer had the arduous task of counting all that coinage. We were all delighted to be saved the trouble. But it was still an enormous task, which has once again shown just how generous the Costa Blanca public can be for such a worthwhile cause and whilst I wouldn’t wish to pick out any specific contribution I would certainly like to mention ‘Mick the Grip’ Reeves and the local golfing fraternity which, including 6,483.11€ brought in just last week, has now donated 9,077.74€ to the appeal.‘

The result of everyone’s hard efforts was a total of 16,679.15€ which, added to that already collected by the branch during the course of the year, brings the running total to 30,850.85€: as Keith said; “an absolutely superb achievement.”

With still more to come in from a small number of local projects, the final figure will not be released for some weeks, but it can already be seen that the branch is having yet another bumper year.

The Torrevieja Branch has also been working hard and they too will be hoping to exceed previous years totals when they consolidate their collections next Sunday morning at the Casa Ventura Restaurant in San Luis.

THE HONDON Valley Branch of the Royal British Legion welcomed Captain Lemkes RN, the Defence Attaché to the British Embassy in Madrid, to its Remembrance Service on 11th November.

The captain was accompanied by his assistant Sgt Michelle Kadshaw RAF and is pictured with Branch Chairman Chris Wyatt and Nigel Hails, Chairman of District of the Legion’s District North.

The service was taken by the branch padre Reverend Canon Terence Sampson and included music from the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums and the Phoenix Concert Band. A Spanish choir sang a number of songs, including one written especially for the occasion, while branch member Tony Brown read his poem ‘...To End all Wars’.

The service including many thought-provoking moments and an extra emphasis was made on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War. And the venue, the Aula del Cultura in Hondon de las Nieves was full of members and friends, both English and Spanish.

Tapping on a world record DANCE EXPERT and a founder member of Careline Theatre, June Booth led 10 other ‘happy tappers’ on Sunday in a British attempt at world record for tap-dancing.

By Jack Troughton The only group in Spain, they joined almost 8,000 other tappers in the ‘Tapathon 2014’, when they danced off to the tune of ‘Happy’ at 2pm in the Orba Civic Centre.

The event raised money for Children in Need and challenged for the Guinness Book of Records title for the largest tap-dance in multiple venues.

The record currently stands at 7,596 dancers.

During an enjoyable afternoon, the group treated the audience to a variety of routines choreographed by June, including two impressive and sharp tap solos by Jade Moore.

Founder visits Nosmo-King club STEVE HALL, one of the founder members of Torrevieja’s Nosmo-King Club paid the club a surprise visit last Thursday. Steve helped form the club back in 2001, long before non-smoking in a Spanish Bar would have ever been a consideration.

The club was formed for those who enjoy socializing in a smoke-free environment with the main the aim to bring people together to make and meet new friends.

The Club meets every Thursday except the last one of the month at El Paraiso in Torrevieja, close to Carrefour. On the last Thursday of the month, a coach trip is arranged to allow members to discover different parts of Spain. Sunday lunches are arranged most months and occasional themed evenings add to the variety of activities. The Thursday meetings start at 11.00am with meetings varying week by week to include quizzes, a speaker or other entertainment, secondhand books sales, while last week was a also a cake and second hand goods sale day.

The Club has lots of activities lined up over the next few months with November ending with a Vega Baja Mystery Coach Trip on the 27th. In December they will be treated to a concert by TAABS o the 4th, on Tuesday 9th they have their Christmas Lunch at The Clubhouse, Quesada, followed by a Concert by ‘Just Brass’ on Thursday 11th and their Club Party Day at El Paraiso on the 18th.

Final demand Death will come to us all one day. Whilst there are many who feel that this current life is one of many, and that death will merely be the changing mechanism between another gift of a life; there are others who are fearful and see death as a traumatic end to their existence. Everyone is frightened of something, but the subject of death leads to a realm of thoughts and aspirations and many will feel release and the excitement of passing over, whilst others will simply focus on what they see is the greatest finality of life, in fear. Death has been celebrated in so many different ways across the centuries, and as all spiritual people know we feel that the release of the soul ends a journey but starts another in the same process. The Egyptians were lavish with their burial ceremonies, embellishing golden inlayed caskets and building memorial temples in which the dead could live again in their own environment of their souls’ desire. But there are accounts of people being pegged out in the desert to be pecked by birds, or fragrant pyres built to incinerate the dearly departed. Frankly I would wish to have a cardboard coffin and my ashes scattered over New York, but what actually happens to my body doesn’t really matter to me, once my soul has begun the very longest journey, I could happily end up in a Lidl carrier bag on the M1.

The Death scene is common in so many films. Whatever era, the centuries have brought about absolute drama in the very last words of woe, as the attending party waits for the final breath of the dying. Personally I wouldn’t wish for anyone to watch me die in this way. This is the absolute reason that the dying very often wait until there is a chance to just close their eyes and

fade away, just when the attendees have slunk out for a crafty cigarette or to make a cup of tea. This brings a pressure of guilt, but the departed have the star billing and can call rank.

A very dear client of mine had a mother who was 101 years old.

She was frail, bless her, but she was hanging on in there for some time and the attention she needed was causing a lot of friction with the family, who were themselves all in need of some kind of closure. Somebody had to say what had to be done, and I am not ashamed that, since it was me, I told the absolute truth of truths in telling the loving daughter to tell her Mother it was time for her to move on. She promptly did just that, in her own words.

Mother contemplated what was said, opened her eyes wide and smiled, grabbed at her daughter’s hand, and just said, “Thank you darling.” She promptly closed her eyes for the very last time that night. I told this story to someone who said I was cruel and harsh, but I was sympathetic, realistic and lovingly kind at a time when the family were not thinking straight.

Death is the beginning and not the end. It can be seen as a sadness, but a good life is a good life, and we are not born with a warranty or any type of guarantee against defect. We do not know how long we have, and how awful it would be if we did know. We would be counting all our lives and anticipating the great day when it finally came, with alacrity. The not knowing allows us to enjoy the freedom of an Earthly life. One of my regular readers doesn’t agree with me on this. He wants to know exactly when the day of his demise is coming so that he can rack up all of his credit cards, and never have to pay the bill...A final demand.

It may help you know that nobody is ever allowed to die alone. Long before the last breath leaves the body a specific angel, ordered by Archangel Raguel, attends the dying person.

This process never fails, and it brings comfort to those who thought that their loved ones were alone at the time of passing. The hand of the Angel that brought somebody into this World is called upon to take their hand in the dying process, and to lead them into the light that forms the Spirit World. If you were born therefore you will have this automatic attention, and it never ever fails. Fear can subside when you know that this loving gesture is a part of your destiny!

An Intimate Musical Evening with Shani JUST BACK from the prestigious Hollywood Music Awards, the Oscars of the music industry is local Torrevieja lass; Shani. The talented singer-songwriter is taking to the stage of Torrevieja’s Music Palace tonight, Friday November 21st, and admission is absolutely free.

By Keith Nicol The intimate setting is in perfect contrast to the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles and is part of this month’s cultural programme. The laid back, acoustic evening with Shani Ormiston and musician friends takes place in the Palacio de Música, with the small auditorium and great acoustics lending itself to this type of ‘unplugged’ concert, where the extensive voice tones of this talented singer blends with the chords of guitar and piano: each supplementing the other.

Shani said; “I love these small venues where my music can inter-relate with the audience in a personal, relaxed atmosphere,” combining her obvious love of singing good songs with an excellent musical accompaniment offered by guitarist Raúl Ramirez and on piano Eugenio Fernández. It is a mixed programme of some well known pieces of music ínter-mixed with some of her own compositions that have been highly acclaimed in the music world with awards and nominations at an international level: the very reason she was once again nominated for an award in Hollywood.

If you are seeking a delightful night of pleasant, relaxing, contemporary pop music offered by one of the best voices around then make sure you have a ticket for her Concert on 21st November in the Palacio de Música at 9:00pm. It’s a (Christmas) cracker!

GATHER ROUND the Christmas Tree and sing well-loved carols and watch the snow gently fall at the Teulada Moraira Lions Club’s ‘Christmas Cracker III’ in Plaza de la Iglesia, Moraira, on Saturday 6th December at 6pm.

The winter weather is guaranteed – the Lions Club has a tried and tested snow machine – and there will be a stall selling mince pies and shortbread, as well as Gluhwein for the adults.

The popular Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir will return to lead the carol singing and the music will again be provided by the Band of the Salvation Army, travelling to the coast from Madrid.

And while the event is free to all, the Lions in their high-visibility yellow tops will be ‘rattling’ collection buckets looking for generous donations. The proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.

The final fund-raising event of 2014 for the Lions is the draw of its annual Christmas Raffle on Friday 19th December at its bookstall on Moraira Market at 11am.

The lucky winner will receive five 50€ vouchers for supermarket Pepe la Sal’ second prize is three 50€ vouchers for the Paichi Garden Centre; and there are four runners-up prizes of a 50€ for shops affiliated to AECO, the Moraira business association.

Taking football in your stride

By Keith Nicol FOR THOSE of you that enjoyed playing the beautiful game in your youth, even those with dodgy knees and hips, have the opportunity to possibly play once again. Designed for the Over 50’s, the newest craze to hit football for years is not rolling around in the grass faking injury, biting opponents shoulders or trying to intimidate the ref, but that of ‘Walking Football’.

While there always exceptions to the rule, such as the late, great Sir Stanley Matthews, who in 1957 became the oldest person to play football for England, at the age of 42 years and 104 days and managed to stay fit enough to play until he was 70, and those such as Manchester City’s Asa Hartford, who at 64 can still put many youth players to shame, for most former players, while the mind may be willing, the body sadly lets them down.

However, research says there’s no reason why you shouldn’t play when you’re in your fifties or sixties or beyond and that age shouldn’t stop you playing football and according to Peter Reddy of Aston University, you may be able to break Sir Stanley’s record, although admittedly at a more modest level.

With that in mind, for those that would like to relive their youth at a much more modest pace, the first Walking Football session has been booked for next Tuesday, 25th November at 11am, on Los Montesinos five-a-side pitch.

Anyone interested can meet in the Football ground car park at 10.30am for the first one hour session that will be split between fitness exercises, ball training and a kick about, plus a basic introduction to the rules, which in essence means no running; no sliding tackles and no kicking the ball over a certain height.

While the session is primarily aimed for those in the Los Montesinos area, it’s hoped the idea will spread and other teams will sprout up around the region. All that’s needed is a T-shirt or football shirt, shorts, track suits, with only trainers required for foot wear. Players will have to sign a disclaimer re accidents, illness etc. Anyone wishing to know more about Walking Football should contact Stan by e-mail: montestan@gmail.com to either join in or find out more about starting your own team in your region.

Fourth Desayun-arte this Sunday THE FOURTH Desayun-Arte, community picnic breakfast takes place this Sunday morning at the iconic setting of Eras de la Sal. This activity has already taken place in the Plaza de Oriente, in the Park Martha Louise of Norway (Urbanization La Siesta), and the Natural Park Municipal Molino del Agua. Desayun-Arte was conceived to build social relations among all members of the public from all nationalities and backgrounds, young and old, and without any class barriers, in an atmosphere of fellowship, sharing cultures and interesting sights. The last event in La Siesta attracted more than fifty people that included many British residents from the Age Concern Association, who all met in the park dedicated to Martha Louise of Norway. The events are open to everyone and always attended by members of the Town Council. Everyone is encouraged to bring along a seat or pillow, picnic breakfast and enjoy sharing it with neighbours. Any groups, associations or neighbours that would like to organise a morning, should contact Jean Paul, Director of the Foreign Residents Office, through the main Tourism Office with their ideas. Sunday’s breakfast starts at 10.30am.

Sir Pauli tells us about his Boy Band LAST MONTH, on the day before Sir Paul McCartney was due to play a concert in Jacksonville Florida, he agreed to make an appearance at the towns Rollins College to talk about his life in music. But being a shy retiring sort of bloke, (true) he made sure the event was only announced that morning, and, inundated with students mad for a seat; they had to resort to a lottery system to sort out who got a ticket.

The lucky few got a chance to interact with Pauli, and his relationship with John Lennon was high on the agenda, to which Macca simply replied “I’d say, ‘It’s getting better all the time,’ and he’d say, ‘It can’t get much worse,” revealing, but not, if you know what I mean. The art of song writing was the next big question he was asked to which he replied “I tell students all the time, ‘Look, I don’t know how to do this, Yesterday´ came to me in a dream, every time I approach a song, there’s no rules, sometimes the music comes first, sometimes the words – and if you’re lucky, it all comes together,” an open honesty that was an integral part of The Beatles remarkable success story.

Like in 1985 they are looking to raise heeps of dosh, only this time it will be to aid the Ebola crisis in Africa. The single will cost 99p to download and £4 to buy. Sir Bob insisted “It doesn’t matter if you hate the song; you have to buy this thing.”

ARETHA FRANKLIN spoke to The Wall Street Journal last week, and when the subject of today’s young singers came up she said about Taylor Swift “Great gowns, I´m sure she´d probably prefer a compliment on her singing and songwriting, but … “ then on Nicki Minaj she said “Hmm...I’m gonna pass on that one.” Aretha following the code there of ´if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.´

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

-er verb endings in the present simple We are still at the early stages of our mission to learn about the present simple tense and how it is formed. Remember that verbs in the present simple are divided into three categories – standard, root-changing and irregular. We are looking at standard verbs and last week we saw what happened to them when they belong to the group with an “-ar” ending on the infinitive. So now we need to look at standard verbs that end in “-er”.

Our single most important principle remains exactly the same, which is that we must first look at our infinitive verb and split it into its two component parts – the ending and the root. The ending only ever has two letters, in this case –er, so whatever is left is the root, be it one letter or ten. Let’s take a very well known verb as an example: COMER meaning of course “to eat”. Our ending is “–er” so our root is “com” and this is the part that expressing the idea of eating. The changes we make to the ending are what give us the information about who does the eating and when they do it.

This means that the three letters

“com” are repeated for the six versions of the verb when we conjugate in the present simple, that is when we change the forms to express 1st, 2nd and 3rd persons singular and plural.

The endings of “-er” verbs are similar to those of the “-ar” verbs except that wherever there was an “a” before there is now an “e”. This gives us: Como - Comemos Comes - Coméis Come - Comen I am not going to keep repeating the translations of each of these forms because they are difficult to fit onto the page and take away from the clarity of the Spanish. However, if you are unsure you can refer to the previous article about “–ar” verbs to see what each change means.

When we are saying these out loud it is important to get the emphasis in the right place. On the 1st, 2nd and 3rd persons singular and 3rd person plural the beat goes on the root – COM, whereas on the 1st and 2nd persons plural the beat falls on the ending. You

There are many standard –er verbs, all of which behave in exactly the same way.

For example: aprender (to learn), beber (to drink), correr (to run), leer (to read) to name but a few. “Leer” usually raises a few eyebrows because English speakers find it odd to accept that if the ending of the verb is “-er” then the root must be “le”, with both letter “e” pronounced independently.

This gives us: Leo - Leemos Lees - Leéis Lee - Leen There are other standard “-er” verbs which make a minor change in the 1st person singular – some examples are: caer (to fall), coger (to pick up), hacer (to make, to do), ver (to see, to match). We will talk about these next week before moving on to “-ir” verbs.

Aeroplane ear SOME PEOPLE love the thrill of air travel. Take offs and landings can be quite exhilarating! There are many more, however, that are terrified!

ONE THING that we all feel during ascent and descent is the effect that changes in pressure has on our ears. For some this is just minor muffling and popping but for others it can cause severe pain and long term problems.

These problems occur because the pressure in the aircraft cabin and the pressure within the ear becomes unbalanced.

A small tube, called the Eustachian tube, runs between the middle ear and the throat and keeps pressure regulated. As the altitude changes quickly during a flight, the Eustachian tube does not have time to react and equalise the pressure.

Symptoms of aeroplane ear, also known as barotrauma, barotitis media or aerotitis media, include: Moderate discomfort or pain in the ear A feeling of fullness in the ear Muffled hearing or mild to moderate hearing loss In severe cases, people may suffer: Severe pain Pressure in the ear Hearing loss Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

Spinning sensation (vertigo) Vomiting Bleeding from the ear Problems can occur in one or both ears. If possible it is best not to fly if you have a cold, sinus infection, nasal congestion or ear infection.

There are several self help measures that can be taken to alleviate aeroplane ear. These include: Sucking sweets, chewing gum, swallowing and yawning. All of these help to open the Eustachian Tube and balance pressure.

Use the Valsalva Manoeuvre: This is just jargon for pinching your nose, closing your mouth and blowing into your nose! Repeat several times.

Don’t sleep or you will not be able to carry out the suggestions above!

Use a nasal decongestant spray 30 minutes before take-off and landing.

If you take antihistamines for allergies, take these 30 minutes before your flight.

Take oral decongestant tablets 30 minutes before a flight but ONLY after checking with your doctor.

Use special filtered earplugs that help to

equalise pressure To help babies and children: Give a bottle, drinks or a dummy.

Keep the child upright.

For older children, drinking through a straw or blowing bubbles through a straw can help.

Your doctor may prescribe ear drops that contain an anaesthetic and a painkiller Do NOT give young children decongestants For people who fly frequently and suffer severe airplane ear, a procedure to place ventilation tubes in the eardrum may be necessary.

If symptoms persist for more than a few hours after a flight or are severe, you should seek medical attention. Complications of airplane ear are rare but can include chronic tinnitus and even permanent hearing loss.

The building was ceded to Age Concern ten years ago.

Luckily an intrepid band of Pantomime heroes stand firm together in Stagestruck’s latest production ‘The Pantomime Pensioners Save Christmas’. This totally original show was written and conceived by the multi-talented Stella Reardon, who also directs and choreographs the show. The Pantomime has lots of humour, a touch of drama plus showcases their very good singers. The audience also can help to save Christmas too and as always, this production promises to be the hot ticket for the Christmas season.

Performances take place at the magnificently appointed Cardenal Belluga Theatre on Thursday November 27th at 3.30pm plus evening performances on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th Nov at 8.00pm. Tickets are only 6.00€, which includes a free glass of wine, water or squash on arrival at the theatre. Beer, wine, water and squash will be available during the interval for a small donation.

All proceeds from the show will go to the Altzheimers Association and The “Shoe Box Appeal” for local children. For tickets please phone Stella on 965 076 700 or 693 231 472.

A SELL-OUT audience enjoyed Studio 32’s version of Cinderella on Friday 14th November raising an impressive 1,500€ for local charities. This production of the favourite panto was written by Damien Trasler, David Lovesy and Steve Clark, directed

by Susan Zillah Wilson and starring Diane Oliver as the elegant Fairy Godmother; Karen Love as Buttons and Stefanie Lohse as Cinderella. Don Wilkinson was Baron Hard-up in his first major role for Studio 32. Prince Charming (Susanne Sayers) and Dandini (Jenni Hardy-Rooney) both gave faultless performances and Major Domo Thomas Mudd had the audience in stitches.

The fabulous Footwork Dance completed the line-up. And you can see more of them in their Christmas show at the School of Music and Culture, Los Montesinos, on Sunday 14th December at 7.30pm.

The curtain came down to a well-earned standing ovation in appreciation of outstanding entertainment.

Studio 32’s next production will be ‘OKLAHOMA’, in 2015. If you are interested in being involved an open day is to be held on November 26th at ‘Casa Ventura’ St. Luis.

Monday’s talk on Gallipoli is about a campaign during World War I that took place on the Gallipoli peninsula.

Russia’s allies Britain and France launched a naval attack followed by an amphibious landing on the peninsula with the eventual aim of capturing the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (Istanbul). After eight months of

fighting, with many casualties on both sides, the campaign failed and the invasion force was withdrawn to Egypt.

In Turkey, it is regarded as a defining moment in the nation’s history.

Each year, they invite nine or ten guest lecturers who cover a number of specialist or general interest subjects. LAST FRIDAY evening, Maria and the Pink Ladies held their annual ball at Campoamor Golf Club restaurant. This year’s theme was a Black and White Ball and 120 people attended, enjoying a fabulous meal and dancing the night away to an evening of Soul and Motown with Richie Alexander. During the meal, guests were amazed by Graham Mykel close-up magic at their tables.

The Pink Ladies held a raffle with fabulous prizes kindly donated by local businesses and on the night a total of 1,355€ was raised with all proceeds to be given to the AECC to help fund their early cancer detection program and further research into a cure for the disease.

Maria said; “I would like to thank all who attended and made the night a really fabulous affair and to watch this space for details of the next ball.” Their next big event happens on Sunday December 7th when Maria and the Pink Ladies will be holding their annual ‘Santa Fun Run’, which this year will start and finish at Zenia Boulveard. The registration fee is 5€ and everyone who would like to participate in the event is also asked to also bring an item of dried or tinned food along to place in Santa’s sleigh, which at the end of the run will be donated to Reach Out to help feed the needy and homeless.

‘Whoa, Google has crashed’ Adobe

WHY DOES Google not shut down properly and then,when I re-start it very often crashes with the message ‘whoa,Google has crashed’. I have a Samsung Notebook with 1megabyte memory. I have ordered another CPU from Amazon with 2 megabyte memory capacity in the hope that this cures the problem. I do sometimes watch television programmes on the computer so, maybe I am using too much memory. What is your opinion? Also, just recently, the computer has become very slow – Terry.

HI AUNTY: I wonder if you can help with this problem. I keep getting a banner up saying “A plug-in (Shockwave Flash) isn`t responding” followed by (stop loading). So I press the (stop loading) icon. Shortly after, a banner saying ‘Shockwave Flash has crashed’ (Reload) comes up. Although I press the (reload) icon, the banners keep appearing. This always stops any page I have showing from progressing.

Any ideas on how to rid my laptop of this situation? Kind regards, Terry

AUNTY SAYS: I shall assume by ‘Google’ you mean Google Chrome, the Google web browser? 1megabyte of memory is practically nothing these days - so I will assume you mean gigabyte and not megabyte. A CPU is a computer processor - the brains of the PC. Self installing it can be tricky, and you need to make sure your PC will accept that new processor.

However, Google chrome crashing can be down to a number of reasons, and may not all be down to CPU or memory problems.

You need to check the addons and extensions in Chrome, as some of these may have been installed without your knowledge.

Also, uninstall any new ones that have been installed recently, that may be the cause of the crashing.

Or alternatively, you can simple reset Chrome.

Google Chrome gives you the option to reset your browser settings in one easy click. In some cases, programmes that you install can change your Chrome settings without your knowledge. You may see additional extensions and toolbars or a different search engine. Resetting your browser settings will reset the unwanted changes caused by installing other programmes. However, your saved bookmarks and passwords will not be cleared or changed.

If the PC has become slow recently, this can be caused by a few things: Running too many applications at one, using too much processor and memory resources.

Or you have some “virus” or “malware” that is causing things to “go slow” So run your antivirus software, and then download and update and run Antimalware bytes, which will scan and hopefully remove anything suspicious.

Aunty says: Usually if a plug in is crashing, then you should uninstall that plug in.

Sometimes you do this from within the browser - exactly how you do this will depend which browser you are having the problems in (IE, Chrome, Firefox...)

Then you can go to the plugin website download and install it again, or sometime, if you go to the webpage, it may ask you if you want to install the required plugin.

Cant download photos DEAR AUNTY: I have just got back from UK to see our first grandchildren and took lots of lovely photos. I got back home here to Spain and treid to download to my laptop - it would not install the photos. Before there was no problem with installing. I have tried many times and waited 30 minutes but nothing. We are so disappointed. Is there another way of doing the installing? Hoping you can help in this matter - Ken Aunty says: Does Windows recognise the device? Does it makes the ‘ding dong’ noise when a new device is connected? If not, then you may have to make sure the device drivers are correctly loaded.

Have you tried a different USB cable - if that is how you are trying to connect the two? Can you connect the device via Wifi?

Difficult for me to say if this is possible, as I do not know what device you are using, but I can connect my phone via wifi to the Router, and then that imports into the PC? Some devices require certain software to connect – e.g.

Samsung Kies for Samsung devices?

Feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross FIRST IMPRESSIONS matter. In business it is that care and attention to appearance, dress and general conduct that makes a lasting impression.

The same can be applied to vehicles and that’s where Suzuki scores highly. From that first moment of opening the door and sitting in the driver’s seat I feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross. Bear in mind that I drive a lot of cars and yet Suzukis always stands out because they are all comfortable.

I test the Suzuki during the worst weather for 100 years. At one point over 100,000 homes are without power and some unfortunate residents in Somerset have been without power since Christmas. Flooding is encountered on almost every route but my Japanese friend with its raised ride height is ideal in such situations.

High winds and water logged roads ensure that it is nigh on impossible to exceed 60mph. Those gusting high winds do buffet the Suzuki but it feels confident enough. It is quite sluggish though especially on start-up and so it is pleasing to find that it is equipped with a sport mode that livens things up. In fact it remains on this mode for most of the test because I find it gives it the ‘oomph’ that I require.

Interestingly it doesn’t affect fuel economy that much either with the vehicle still returning over 40mpg, which I’m quite impressed with considering it’s a 1.6-litre petrol.

When conditions become too slippery it is easy to turn the centre mounted dial to ‘snow and mud’ mode, which is also extremely useful during the test. Some of the routes that I am most familiar with have been closed due to the floods and workmen try hard to remedy the situation.

The raised ride height, the permanent 4WD and the powerful windscreen wipers and washers make driving in these challenging conditions enjoyable rather than a chore.

My two girls in the back quickly fall asleep and my wife Caroline finds her heated front seat comfortable. “I like the lemon fragrance to the windscreen wash,” she says, adding that sometimes it can be very overpowering requiring the windows to be wound down.
