Safety fears on Iberia flight
IBERIA EXPRESS, Spain’s newest airline, was this week accused of allowing strict safety rules to slip during a flight from Madrid to Alicante’s El Altet Airport. by jack troughton
Rojales show Madrid their heels THE ROJALES Netball Club took on Madrid in the annual International netball tournament which was held at the La Manga Club Sports complex. Teams from the United Kingdom, Marbella and Madrid all took part in the event which was full of great netball despite the heat of the day. In what was a great end to the tournament Rojales took on the mighty Madrid and were determined to beat the team from the capital city. Read the full story on page 56.
Frequent flyer John Pickford was “appalled” at standards on flight IB2424 on 25th April and has fired off a letter of complaint calling for urgent action. John had taken a party of 20 from Calpe U3A on a “Tigers and Dragons Cruise” around the Far East with flights booked through British Airways and was returning with some members of the party, others choosing to stay in the UK. “I have written to BA,” he said. “I have said that as a member of the enlarged group, it should be aware one of its new divisions, Iberia Express, is lacking in certain safety procedures.” Spanish airline Iberia – which merged with BA to form the International Airlines Group – launched low-cost carrier Iberia Express earlier this year aiming to turn around its loss making domestic division. The new airline promises cheaper prices would not compromise the quality of its service and, importantly, safety. However, John accused the cabin crew of not insisting international safety standards were followed and blamed a lack of training. ENFORCE “It is not a case of complaining but to bring to the airline’s attention they should do
something about the way safety is presented and enforced.” He said passengers had been allowed to board with overweight and over-sized luggage and “stuffed them into overhead lockers”, people had kept handbags and briefcases on their laps during take-off and landing, while mobile ‘phones and electronic games were used throughout the journey on the Airbus A320 200 series aircraft. “Having flown many years in business and many thousands of miles on different airlines, I was concerned about the lack of safety – concerned for the safety of the passengers and the crew,” said John. “My concern is if it does not improve and God forbid there is an accident and people have to get off the aircraft quickly, it could contribute to making a simple accident into something far worse.” He said in the Manchester Air Disaster of 1985, when a British Airtours Boeing burst into flames on the runway after an engine failed, 55 people had died – some unable to reach emergency exits because of panic and being impeded by baggage. “This is a new airline but they are not setting a very good example – and thought maybe a newspaper article will help highlight this and get something done about it.” Continued on page 4

Charity’s “incredible” job 04 - 10 MAY 2012
by jack troughton VOLUNTEERS OF the MABS Cancer Support Group were praised this week for their hard work helping people with the disease and their families. British Consul Paul Rodwell was joined by Oscar Anton, the Deputy Mayor of Javea and leader of Xabia Democratica, in thanking the charity for its vital community role. Speaking at the charity’s Spring Ball at the Marriott Hotel, Denia, Mr Rodwell said: “MABS is a very, very important charity which does incredible work. “Why are charities so important at the moment? I think they have always been important actually, but it doesn’t take an expert to see why they are so important at this time – and times could get even harder. “MABS is such a great example of a charity helping people who are suffering, obviously from cancer.” The Consul said that because of the crisis, town hall budgets would be squeezed. “Social services will probably be reduced and that

makes MABS and other charities even more important.” PRIDE Mr Anton, who presented the charity with Javea Town Hall plaques, said the local authority was “proud” of people wanting to help others in the community. “We recognise what you are doing and have a lot of respect for MABS,” he said. “An organisation like yours is helping a lot of people and cancer is one of the worst illnesses we suffer in this age “And in difficult times, it is wonderful to see an organisation like MABS giving such service.” And it was a successful night for fund raising for the charity, a silent auction made 620€, the raffle another 960€, and tickets sold to win a gallon bottle of whisky another 270€. Pictured are (left to right) Lin Jones the MABS committee member in charge of fund raising, Oscar Anton, Paul Rodwell, and MABS President Jacqui Phillips MBE.
Marching on together MEMBERS OF Labour International Costa Blanca joined trade unions in the traditional May Day march on Tuesday to protest against unpopular austerity measures. Organisers said around 20,000 people walked through the streets in brilliant sunshine before hearing speeches from UGT and CCOO regional union leaders hitting out at the Spanish government’s labour reforms and cuts in public spending. Labour International’s Malcolm Hardy said afterwards: “As in Britain and the rest of Europe, Spanish workers are bearing the brunt of the economic crisis which is not of their making and deserve our wholehearted support.”
THE BAAO Children’s Choir from the Philippines lifted the 3,000€ first prize at the Habaneras Youth contest last weekend. Second prize of 2,000€ went to the Solare School of Valmiera Music from Latvia while the third prize, 1,000€, was awarded to the Madrid choir ‘Antara Korai, Alcorcón White Voices’. The eighteenth edition of the competition this year attracted more than 400 choristers in 11 choral groups from Logroño, Ciudad Real, Madrid, Guipúzcoa, Girona, Latvia, the Philippines and Torrevieja. The councilman for Culture and vice president of the Municipal Habaneras, Luis Maria Pizana, was delighted with the success of the competition and the high standard of participating choirs. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, announced that work is already in hand for next year’s competition.

Short stay parking spaces introduced to promote city shopping by louise clarke THE MAYOR of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, has announced that some streets in the city will have new short stay car parking spaces which will have a time limit of one hour for use. The 100 new spaces will be located on Calles Bazan, Orihuela, Rambla Juan Mateo, Ramon Gallud, as well as the Paseo de La Libertad. The new parking initiative comes after discussions between the Town Hall and the Torrevieja Association of Small and Medium Businesses (APYMECO). The Mayor told RTN that it was important to increase the parking spaces within the central business district and worked in collaboration APYMECO and the Hospitality Association of Torrevieja and District. The spaces are free of charge to use but there will be a one hour limit and will allow shoppers to park in the commercial zone of the city on a rotational basis. The spaces will have this sign next to them and will detail the times that parking is allowed.
Spain’s second largest mass grave of Franco victims exhumed in Teba
A MASS grave of the Civil War believed to be Spain’s second largest is being exhumed in Teba, Malaga, at the San Rafael Cemetery. 85 victims – 81 men and 3 women have been discovered in the grave estimated to hold around 125 bodies, with 35 recovered so far. The victims were shot by Franco’s troops in the town. The identification process - complicated as the remains have been dumped on top of each other – has already begun. Franco took Teba in September 1936. The mass grave victims were those trying to escape Franco’s repression, caught by troops in early 1937 and shot in groups of ten.
Child dies after being hit by advertising billboard A SIX-year-old boy died tragically this Wednesday in the Ibizan town of Sant Antoni de Portmany when a concrete column supporting an advertising billboard fell onto the child’s head as he played in the garden of his home with his four-year-old sister. Medics attending the scene administered emergency treatment but failed to save the boy’s life. The child’s family were also treated for shock.

Hospital best in Valencia by Jack Troughton THE MARINA Baixa Hospital is the best in Valencia thanks to the “work and effort” of its management and professional teams, it was revealed this week. The Villajoyosa facility was declared the best public hospital within the community after winning recognition for its performance during 2011. During the last year 8,600 patients underwent surgery, 400 more than 2010, while a total of 12,454 admissions helped maintain an average occupancy of hospital wards at 75%, while the average stay in hospital was reduced to 5.64 days. Over the year, 1,191 new babies were brought into the world, while mums stayed an average of 2.7 days after arriving at the hospital – births accounting for over half of admissions into the Obstetrics department. And over the 12 months, the hospital treated more than 104,000 people as outpatients, while over 65,000 people were seen in accident and emergency. continued from front page John said he was so worried he had approached the head stewardess – who appeared “quite surprised” – and instructed colleagues to remind passengers of the regulations. “But because this was not properly explained to passengers, a lot of whom were Spanish OAPs, perhaps flying for the first or second time, they were reluctant to let go of their bags and personal possessions - it was a very half-hearted attempt to get people to stow things away properly,” he said. “Passengers were told to switch off mobile ‘phones and reminded not to use games consoles. Not only was this ignored, and people carried on using them, but the crew took no action.” After touching down in Alicante, John said he approached the crew again. “I said I was concerned about the lack of safety instructions being issued and felt my safety was compromised because of this and they needed to smarten up their act.” He said during the flight friends were “nervous” because of the situation during the flight. A spokesman for Iberia stressed that safety was of paramount importance to the airline and promised any complaint about safety standards on one of its flights would be fully investigated.

New palm trees for the Coast
04 - 10 MAY 2012

by Louise Clarke THE COUNCILLOR for Beaches and Tourism, Pedro Mancebo, has announced this week that a new initiative to plant more than 300 new palm trees in Orihuela Costa is currently underway. The work to plant the trees started earlier this week and will see 300 ‘Washingtonia’ palm trees in areas up and down the coast. Pedro told RTN: “We plan to replace the trees that we have lost or are in poor condition on the main promenade in La Zenia and Cala Capitan.” The Town Hall has also requested permission from the Directorate General of Coasts to plant some of the palm trees on Orihuela’s beaches in a bid to further improve the coastal landscape. ZERO COST “We want to improve the image of our beaches and prepare for this summer,” said the Councillor. He also pointed out that the palms that have been donated to the Town Hall by the Pedrera Foundation will be planted by municipal work crews, so this project will be at zero cost. “In La Zenia, we will be retiring and replanting 47 palm trees that were in very bad condition and we have already made a start in the area of Cala Capitan.” Mancebo also announced that the Town Hall has proposed to name six currently unnamed roads in the Mil Palmeras Urbanisation after various different Washingtonia palm species. Jewellery thief arrested in Almoradí THE GUARDIA Civil has arrested a 32 year old Almoradí resident for the theft of jewellery valued at 1,800€. The burglary took place at a house in the La Murada, district of Orihuela and the man arrested was known to the owner of the property. The man is awaiting trial in Orihuela for the offence.
New hotel set to open later this month
TORREVIEJA’S FIRST four star hotel will open on the 15th May it has been announced this week. The Fontana Plaza Hotel and Spa, located on the CV95 just passed Los Balcones, is being promoted by the construction company Viloru which has overcome almost nine years of difficulties getting the project completed. The funding to complete the hotel came in mid 2011 after Banco Sabadell invested in the hotel. The facility, which overlooks the lagoon of Torrevieja, boasts a luxurious spa, a roof top swimming pool, a restaurant and bar as well as more than 100 rooms.

Health crisis
04 - 10 MAY 2012
OVER THE years I have written about the pressure being placed on the Spanish NHS via the EHIC and SIP cards being issued to just about anyone who applied for them. by Consequently when I tried to explain that the EHIC
Jennifer Cunningham
card was for emergency treatment during your trip outside of your home country, and that a SIP card was only available for state registered pensioners who had taken residencia and also for those who worked and paid into the Social Security system. The comments I received by email, advising me that I had no idea of the rules, were amazing. I have often been accused of frightening people and that my only wish is to sell health insurance. Of course I need to sell insurance, enabling me to continue trading, however if by telling the truth I am in trouble, so be it. Now all that we are reading and hearing in the press comes directly from Central Government in Madrid. Many people have abused the system, and Spain has not received the monies due to them by the relevant countries, as on many occasions people are not paying into the system in their home countries either. With approximately 700,000 foreigners not entitled to a Spanish Health card, but being granted a SIP card by their local medical centres last year, this has cost Spain in the region of 917 Million Euros. No wonder the health system is in a crisis. Within the next two months the Government are planning new laws which will come into effect immediately, one of the directives will stop foreigners taking advantage of the Spanish Health system by using health care they are not entitled to and for which Spain is not being reimbursed. For example, only those who are either employed, self employed or who are receiving state pensions and have transferred from the British NHS to the Spanish
Social Security will be entitled to free health care. The EHIC card will be more strictly controlled as to usage during your trip abroad, there is now an excellent communication system in place between Spain and Britain to monitor your legal residence. Health Insurance is vital when living in Spain, paying for treatment privately should you need it, could be extremely expensive. Far better to plan ahead in case an accident or illness happens, we never know when something may occur, and you could find out that the UK will not treat you. My Company has been working with Asssa for about a decade and Mandy, the company’s Asssa administrator, has many satisfied clients, she always goes the extra mile to help and was delighted to receive a wonderful letter from a satisfied client, (see the letters page). I just add my own comments here, by saying that I was very impressed at the very prompt treatment given to Mr Winstanley by Asssa, he was sent by ambulance to Madrid to one of the best neurosurgeons in Europe and he feels it is because of this action that he is alive today. What a wonderful story. Asssa is an excellent Company with very Special Offers available to help you to access private health care despite this terrible recession, there are a number of companies selling Private Health Insurance at all different prices and levels, just take care that you are not persuaded to take a product at a very cheap price and at the same time told it covers everything. This is just not realistic, there are limits to all the policies, some more than others. There are top up versions to the Spanish Health System, this enables you to have
prompt diagnostic procedures but with limited hospitalization, there are other levels which handle oncology, prosthesis and well woman and man checks. As always I advise you never to take the verbal word, but to read the documents carefully. I will give you some Sound Advice: Check you have Guaranteed Cover for Life, in writing, without this your insurer has the right to cancel your policy due to excessive claims history. The Age you Join is the Age you Stay, so important as many policies have a huge increase as you become older. Asssa have an individual claims review instead of an overall claims increase, much fairer to you if you have not used the policy. After one year, cover for all major illnesses, except those pre existing to taking out the policy. Asssa also have the most comprehensive, doctors, consultants and hospital book in Spain I suggest that you keep this article and when the law changes and you have a problem, or decide sooner to do something about your health cover, call Mandy in the Javea office and she will explain the policy in detail and give you a quote, or alternatively , call into any of my offices. ***** STOP PRESS ***** JOIN US FOR OUR OPEN DAY ON THE 10TH MAY 11.016.00 FREE DRINKS AND SNACKS at our new office in The Commercial Centre in Playa Flamenca ( near Supercor) , where David Feest and his team will be delighted to welcome both old and new clients. Third age fair attracts thousands www.roundtownnews.co.uk
04 - 10 MAY 2012
The fair was inaugurated by the Mayor
by Louise Clarke THOUSANDS OF people attended the first ever Third Age Fair in Torrevieja last weekend. The three day event, which was held at the city’s Entertainment Centre (CMO), was officially opened by Torrevieja’s Mayor, Eduardo Dolon last Friday along with the Councillor for Senior Citizens, Inmaculada Montesinos, and various other members of the government team. Prior to the event Eduardo Dolon told RTN that as 2012 marks the European Year of Active Ageing, the Torrevieja Town Hall wants to highlight the importance of this age group especially as the city has more than 25,000 registered
residents of that age, which represents almost 25% of the population. The Mayor added: “The Town Hall has spent many years making the needs of this group a priority and we want to emphasise more involvement of local government, specifically creating this Department, which is planning numerous activities that will cater to every need.” LINE DANCING The fair played host to a range of activities and provided a wealth of information and support for all of Torrevieja’s elderly residents of all na-
tionalities. All of the city’s care homes for the elderly were represented and areas of interest at the fair included Health, Resources, Leisure and Culture and Economics. And as well as practical advice, the three-day celebration included various activities such as; decorative card making, group painting, ballroom dancing, flamenco dancing, line dancing and fitness as well as laughter therapy workshops, performances by local choirs and competitions for dominoes, cards and ludo. Doctor Felices Lago was also on hand to provide visitors with glaucoma tests.
Completed restoration of Baroque paintings hidden for three centuries IN ELDA the extensive restoration of Baroque frescoes hidden beneath plasterwork for three hundred years in the church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows) has finally been completed. A 250,000€ investment in a four year project that began in 2007 was funded by the Department of Culture, IVACOR, the Town Hall and the parish to uncover a series of stunning images of demonic exorcism. They were covered in plaster in 1746 on the orders of the Bishop of Orihuela, Gomez de Teran. The newly cleaned, vibrantly coloured images are a delight to see.
Orihuela’s budget is announced
By Louise Clarke THE ORIHUELA Councillor for Finance, Juan Ignacio Lopez-Bas, has this week presented the 2012 budget to the government team, the opposition party, Partido Popular (PP) and the Councillor without Responsibility, Bob Houliston. With the austerity measures ordered by the central government as a guideline, the budget amounts to nearly 68 million euros and is 2.16% less than the 2011 budget. Lopez-Bas presented the document on Monday and yesterday (Thursday), the Finance Commission began studying and debating the document, which includes enforced restrictions as per the recently approved Adjustment Plan and is subject to the Budgetary Stability Law which has been enacted by the central Government. COASTAL INVESTMENT The Councillor warned that the Town Hall has no chance of borrowing, given that it has already exceeded the 75% maximum allowed capacity and the investment part of the budget totals 1,077,000€ of which 750,000€ will be invested in Orihuela Costa. RTN was told: “With regards to municipal investment, 40% will go to the coast, 30% to the districts and 30% to the city centre.” Amongst the planned investments on the coast is a project to improve wastewater collection, a footbridge over the road N-332, new green spaces, remodelling of the coast Town Hall with the expansion of fixtures and new flooring and the commissioning of a new tourist office that will be open longer hours and during the weekends.

Town Hall to promote employment at new commercial centre by louise clarke
THE ORIHUELA Town Hall has received authorisation to act as an employment placement agency for one of Spain’s largest DIY stores, Leroy Merlin. This is the first initiative of its type and comes after the signing of an agreement with the company to recruit staff for the new shopping centre, La Zenia Boulevard, which is due to open in the autumn. The Councillor for Juan Ignacio Lopez-Bas, signed the agreement with Leroy Merlin at the end of April and he received the support of the Councillor for Beaches and Tourism, Pedro Mancebo, as well as his colleagues in the Department of Education, Training and Employment. The signed agreement includes the allocation of 130 jobs in the multinational store. Lopez-Bas told RTN: “This public service is a direct intermediation of jobs for business needs, according to the skills and profiles of the job seekers.” Through a computer system, which is compatible with the one of the public employment services, suitable candidates will be matched to the vacant positions. The signing of the agreement contract between the Town Hall and the DIY giant, which

specialises in construction and decoration materials, means that the Town Hall has agreed to provide a list of job seekers according to the specific profile sought by the company. This also includes the selection process and training prior to the job seeker commencing work. Leroy Merlin is committed to hiring staff that have been registered on the ‘padron’ within the municipality, for at least one year. The 130 vacant positions at the Leroy Merlin store and the 40 indirect positions, make up just a fraction of the 1,500 positions that will be available within the whole shopping centre. Pedro Mancebo told RTN that he has
AS PART of the European Day celebrations on 9th May, the European All Stars International Jazz Band has been especially formed and will offer a one off concert in Torrevieja’s Palacio de la Musica, this Monday, 7th May at 8.30pm. This ‘unique’ traditional jazz band has been formed from local residents of different nationalities and is a concert not to be missed! Tickets can be purchased at the venue on the night.
been meeting the management of the centre every two weeks in order to prepare, amongst other things, the employment placement agreement. Meetings have also taken place with the responsible business groups in Orihuela Costa. ACCESS “Not only has the employment placement agreement been important,” explained Mancebo, “as our main aim is getting employment for the job seekers within our municipality, we have also been discussing the new roads and access to the centre.”
He explained: “It is no good to our residents in La Zenia, or to the centre, having this amazing new shopping centre when access is abysmal and there are traffic jams in both directions.” Job seekers who are interested in submitting their CV to the Town Hall can do so at the Orihuela Costa Town Hall in Playa Flamenca or via the websites of the companies which hope to open a store within La Zenia Boulevard. As this agreement with Leroy Merlin has been accepted very favourably, it is expected that further agreements will be signed with other companies intending to open stores in the new commercial centre.
Police chase ends with eight car wreckage
POLICE GAVE chase on the outskirts of Torrevieja on Monday when the driver of an Audi A6 failed to stop at a police check. Officers recognised the driver who had recently been released from Fontcalent prison where he had served time for theft. The man did not have a valid driver’s license. The dramatic chase gained speed into the centre of town where the A6 finally hit a parked car and skidded into six other vehicles, one of which was overturned in the road. One of the owners of a wrecked vehicle had exited his car only a few minutes before. The police arrested the man at gunpoint.

More active pensioners Re your pot-shot at our dear old king. Every day in the papers there are article’s that the elderly; (pensioners) should have active hobbies. What’s more active than chasing elephants around the bush, and whats 30,000€ compared to spending billions on unused or soon to be closed airports and high speed train routes that nobody can afford to travel on. If I had his mages income or savings I would be out there with him. More active pensionersThe elephants that he shoots (shot) were destined to be shot due to culling i.e. too many in a small area will completely destroy their habitat and starve themselves and other game to death . The numbers are regulated to what the area can support. Regards, M.J.Pinner

British blood
I WAS a blood donor in the UK for over 30 years. So when I arrived in Spain I thought that I would continue. I contacted my local medical centre to enquire how to donate and was surprised to be told that I could not donated blood in Spain because I was British! This was due to the fact that I had lived in the UK during the mad cow epidemic. I wonder how many other people have been told the same? If there are British point our insurance company ASSSA and people donating blood what criteria did they have Jennifer Cunningham’s ASSSA Administo meet? I know that in trator, Mandy Borelli stepped in. ASSSA were advised that Phil’s best chance the UK they will not accept for survival was a specialist neurosurgeon blood from practicing homosexuals, unless you are a in Madrid. Within 48 hours they had organised everything and Phil was taken to rare blood group. Tim Clarke Madrid by ambulance. He was operated on by one of Spain’s top neurosurgeons and received the best of care. He has since had radiotherapy and chemotherapy which WHO WOULD want to be President of Spain? Spain´s present unwas also organised by ASSSA. His outlook enviable crisis situation and 24% jobless rate reminds me of the for the future is very positive. I cannot praise ASSSA enough for the time (late 1960s) when Orson Welles was the Guest of Honour on efficient and professional way they have The Johnny Carson Show. dealt with everything for us. Nor can I Johnny: “What would you do, Mr. Welles, if you were Mayor of give enough thanks for the kindness and New York City?” Without a second’s hesitation, the genius resupport we received from Mandy Borelli plied: “Well, I´d resign, of course.” at Jennifer Cunningham’s. I WOULD like to advise readers to beware of roadside robbery. We were travelling back from France in our English car and were robbed on the Vallencia road as we came out of a service station. We were pulled over in response to a guy flashing his lights and pointing to our wheels. He reversed his car right into our bumper and when my partner got out the guy was trying to let our tyres down - he kept pointing to the inside of the wheels. He wasn’t Spanish he was white European in a grey car, light fair hair about 35 – 40. He brought me round to look at the wheel. Whilst I was bending with my partner, his partner must have pinched my bag out of the front of the car. We lost passports; driving licence; car keys; all our ID documentation… On our arrival in Benimantell we found a couple living in adjoining village Guadalest had the same thing happen to them - they are pensioners who live here for four months of the year - readers beware of these low life: be on the alert.
Life savers TOO MANY times I read about people’s negative experiences in Spain so I want to share something positive about the wonderful care my husband and I have received during what has been a very difficult time. We retired to Spain four years ago. As we are under the UK state retirement age we don’t qualify for Spanish health care so we took out medical insurance with ASSSA via Jennifer Cunningham Insurance: it turned out to be a decision that saved my husband Phil’s life. On 23rd January I took my husband to the emergency room at San Jaime hospital in Torrevieja after he became violently sick with severe head pains. He was given an MRI scan and was diagnosed with a very complicated brain tumour that required emergency surgery. At this

Local optician sets his sights high Left to right Luis Barcia Caro, José Antonio Rojano Nova, Jorge Martínez de Lizarduy Araico, José Carreño Román, Juan Miguel Ivars Becerra
by patricia thompson JORGE MARTINEZ de Lizarduy Araico, Director of Specsavers Opticas Benidorm, is to take part in two mountain races this year to raise money for charity The Friends of the Children of EMAÚS. Between these two runs, from 10th March to 12th May, the team aim to raise 2,000€ for the charity by fundraising in store and gaining sponsors for the mountain race. The first run took place on 10th March from La Perimetral to Benissa, 63.8km through the mountains at a maximum altitude of 3,100 meters. Jorge completed the run in just over 11 hours and said “What a tough race... but it was amazing”. The second mountain run is the Maratóimitja Castelló-Penyagolosa on 12th May - a distance of 61.76km. He is running for The Friends of the Children of EMAÚS, a charity Specsavers Opticas Benidorm has committed to support throughout 2012. The Friends of the Children of EMAÚS are a completely voluntary group of individuals, based in Northern Costa Blanca, whose purpose is to raise much-needed funds for children in EMAÚS’ shelters. Jorge explains why they chose the charity, “The other store Director and I are both family men and so this children’s charity is close to our hearts. Children are the most vulnerable members of our society and so we want to
support this charity which is working so hard to protect children coming from bad homes. In addition to the charity runs, from 10th March to 12th May we want to raise as much as possible so we are giving away free eye tests in store and encouraging customers to make a small donation to the charity. We hope our clients and local residents will give generously to help EMAÚS with their important work.” Jorge only took an interest in running four years ago, inspired to push himself further by a bet! “My first running challenge was the Benidorm half marathon. I did it in 1 hour 49 minutes, a respectable time, but my friend bet me that I couldn’t get down to 1 hour 35 the following year and I just had to prove him wrong. I started training intensively for this with a group of guys and we’re now a team of seven called Specsavers Benidorm, launched on 8th March. There are some exceptional athletes in our team and we train 5-6 times a week. These runs are just the latest challenge we’ve set ourselves whilst raising money for a good cause.” To follow Jorge’s progress visit their Facebook page Specsavers Montaña Benidorm. For an eye test or to make a donation to the charity visit Specsavers Opticas Benidorm at Calle de Gambó 2.

Benidorm triumphantly weathers the crisis
by JAck troughton
MODELS ARE needed to represent the UK in an international competition at this summer’s glittering Costa Blanca Fashion Show being staged in Benidorm. The successful female and male will be entered in the prestigious Best International Model 2012 contest on 28th July - with the chance of winning 2,000€ and a year-long contract with a Gibraltar-based model agency. The fashion week and the competition are organised by Sukier Model international and it is a unique opportunity to fast track into a world of glamour. RTN has joined in the hunt to discover new faces to go forward and compete against models from around the globe – the pair chosen to be the UK’s entry in the glamorous July contest will be selected at auditions being held in Benidorm on 14th June. And to insure the best chance of success, anyone aged between 15 and 26 and taller than the 170cm minimum height can enter the fun. There is no requirement if the candidates are resident here in Spain – so proud parents and grandparents can put forward the younger members of the family. In the first instance, applicants must send two photographs – one of their face and the second a full body
picture in swimwear - to RTN at model@roundtownnews.com Finalists will be invited to be in Benidorm on Thursday 14th June for a catwalk audition and the successful female and male can look forward to the exciting Best International Model 2012 competition the following month. Costa Blanca Fashion Week and the modelling competition have been run by Sukier Model Interna-
tional since 2003. Last year’s events were a huge success in Benidorm and this year promises to be a sparking occasion, bigger and better than 12 months ago. Director and founder of Sukier Model International is Sukier Vallejo Marte, formerly from the Dominican Republic and currently resident in La Nucia, who has enjoyed a successful career as a model, actor and television presenter.
AS THE rest of the Costa Blanca hospitality trade struggles to keep its head above water in the crisis with a 60% hotel occupancy rate Benidorm exceeded an incredible 95% over the ‘puente’ weekend with every establishment booked to capacity and last-minute deals bringing many three and four star hotels to 98% occupancy. “We are on top yet again,” said Javier Garcia, the vice president of hotel association Hosbec. “Last minute bookings have become the main way to buy holidays for the Spanish customer, waiting to book at the last moment.” The rest of the region performed at only 60%, with Alicante suffering the lowest occupancy. As the weather begins to warm up in the approach to the summer season, Benidorm is looking forward to welcoming sun seekers for yet another spectacular year.
Lucky escape for Building of Commerce workers in Alicante
Winners of Spain category 2011
A 60 KILO stone ledge from the cornice of the Chamber of Commerce in Alicante collapsed and crashed into the doorway below on Sunday. Luckily no one was injured as it was late afternoon and also on the weekend. Had it been a working day it is highly likely there would have been casualties. Fire fighter and local police immediately sealed off the area and made the building safe. The Mayor of Alicante, Sonia Casted, and the Urban Services councillor Andres Llorens, later arrived at the scene to check the damage and admitted that the building had “serious problems.”

Watercolour sells for $19 million
A RARE watercolour by French artist Paul Cezanne that was believed lost for nearly 60 years sold for more than $19 million at Christie’s auction house in New York City on Tuesday to an anonymous buyer. The painting was a study for Cezanne’s series of oil paintings entitled ‘Card Players’ created between 1890 and 1896. It was rediscovered this year in the collection of the late Dr. Heinz Eichenwald, a well-known collector from Texas. It shows a man in a hat and jacket playing cards at a table, in hues of blue and ochre: the figure is thought to be Paulin Paulet, a gardener on Cezanne’s Aix en Province estate.

Open day at Velocity satisfies new nursery the need for speed by Louise Clarke WE HAD many a great day out at our local race track when we lived in the UK. With a ‘petrol head’ for a husband, a trip to High Edge Racetrack near Buxton was always guaranteed to put a smile on his face, so you can imagine his joy when we heard about the opening of the Velocity Oval/Short Circuit Race Track, which is located close to Cartagena. The flat circuit is approximately 365 metres in circumference and differs from a road course in that it turns in one direction only. As the turns are all very fast it can be a bit hairy for the drivers who tackle the circuit but it makes for a great spectator sport with all the thrills and spills of fast motor racing right there in front of you. Velocity Racing Spain intends to bring a range of formulas to the racetrack including 1300 Stock Cars, Hot Rods, Lightning Rods, Junior Rods and Rookie Rods. These formulas provide a ‘real’ racing experience especially because you are likely to witness lots of paint being traded between the cars without the likelihood of serious accidents.
cars and much more will be on display both on and off the track and famous Hot Rod driver Colin White will be on hand to take to the track and show everyone what a national hot rod is all about as they officially open the track whilst driving at some extreme speeds. Then stuntman Terry Grant will entertain you with his fantastic stunt show donuts with more smoke than you can imagine and more!

Watts In Britain By
Paul Watts
Media barons and power without responsibility
JOHN MAJOR’S government had the ‘cash for questions’ scandal; Tony Blair’s had the ‘cash for honours’ scandal; and Dave Cameron’s has the ‘cash for a cosy-chat-with-the-PM scandal’. But, you know folks it’s just business as usual at Westminster. You would think that after the ‘expenses scandal’ the public perception of their MPs could get no lower. Wrong. According to one recent poll the general public’s faith in the ‘ruling elite’ has fallen to ‘an all time low’. Is it really surprising? Just look at the way they embrace people like Murdoch. The thing that frequently amazes me is that politicians never seem to learn from the lessons of history. Maybe, if those top MPs that are just career politicians (i.e. never had a ‘proper job’) started out by being historians they might make a better fist of it. Take the Leveson Inquiry and politicians that cosy up to press barons - there is nothing new under the sun. By the time your fabulous Friday RTN comes out, the PM will probably have ditched Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt in the fall-out generated from the Leveson Inquiry (or maybe not). To remind you, the inquiry was set up to make “recommendations on the future of press regulation and governance consistent with maintaining freedom of the press and ensuring the highest ethical and professional standards.” Since Lord Justice Leveson opened the hearings on 14th November 2011, it’s been one roller-coaster ride for the compliant politicians and the Murdochs. But if only those politicians had looked back to the lessons of history, they might have learnt. In an attempt to establish the truth about links between Press barons and politicians, Lord Leveson himself decided to open some pages from history. Last week the Inquiry heard evidence from the late Lord Beaverbrook about his relationship with another Prime Minister: Sir Winston Churchill. In case you do not know,
William Maxwell Aitken, First Baron Beaverbrook, was owner of the: Daily Express, Sunday Express and London Evening Standard - and cosy chum of Winston Churchill (or not). And like Murdoch, when questioned, he too suffered from an unreliable (or selective) memory. Here is verbatim script from a hearing, long, long, ago. “Lord Beaverbrook, when did you first meet Mr Winston Spencer Churchill?” “I can’t recall.” “How many meetings did you have with Mr Churchill over the following 50 years?” “I may have met him on one or two occasions.” “ As well as your friendship with Mr Churchill, you also had several meetings with the Prime Minister Mr Lloyd George?” “I don’t remember but my father might.” “Didn’t Mr Lloyd George later appoint you Minister of Information and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster?” “I don’t recall.” In 1918, did you agree to throw the weight of the Daily Express behind Mr Churchill and Mr Lloyd George’s campaign in the coming General Election? “Politicians, let’s be clear, always seek the support of all newspapers...” Does this not all seem eerily familiar, folks? As the questioner moves on to later events, ole Beaver’s memory becomes even less reliable... “Allow me to jump ahead now to World War II. After Mr Churchill became Prime Minister he appointed you Minister of Aircraft Production...” “I have no memory of that whatsoever.”
First Baron Beaverbrook
“After the war, you continued to lavish hospitality upon Mr Churchill at your homes in Britain, Jamaica and the South of France.” “I don’t recall. It was a long time ago...” Same old, same old; you could substitute Beaverbrook for Murdoch or Churchill for Cameron. Leveson opened his inquiry by saying: “The press provides an essential check on all aspects of public life. That is why any failure within the media affects all of us. At the heart of this Inquiry, therefore, may be one simple question: who guards the guardians?” Who indeed, M’lud... Watts in Britain, still taking the tabloids...

In one hand – out the other YOU MAY remember an announcement last October that the government had ‘stepped in’ and frozen electricity rates which at the time seemed like great news for consumers. However, unknown to most of us, when they made this decision, the industry began legal action against them and last month, a Supreme Court ruling overturned their decision and deemed their action as unlawful. What does this mean? According to Energy Minister Jose Manuel Soria it means that Iberdrola will now be sending a bill to all of their customers for the ‘under charge’ in the electricity rate from October 1st 2011 to March 31st 2012. But don’t worry, those really nice people will allow you to pay the debt in stage payments – thanks! So, whatever your Iberdrola bill said during that six month period, it’s wrong. Not only is the kilowatt rate too low, the electricity tax and IVA are also wrong. When you compare your bill to your neighbours who are with a different provider, you will think there is not much difference, you may even think you were better off had you stayed with the monopoly company, but you would be wrong. This is just one of a list of reasons why you should switch providers, we all need protection and Iberswitch – Spain’s largest USC (Utility Switching Company) will get you onto a better rate and put you on a tariff that suits your usage.
Energy Minister Jose Manuel Soria
Acting as a bridge between you and the electricity companies, Iberswitch monitors the market and when an even better rate becomes available, will switch you again to maximise on your savings. Using their service your need never worry you are paying the wrong kilowatt rate or on the wrong tariff. Why not give Iberswitch a call to see how they would reduce your electricity bill? 966 265 089.

Starting a new project By
Chris Marshall Expat blogger www.almerimarlife.com
I WANTED to take the opportunity this week to draw attention to a new project that I have just set up, which RTN and iTalkFM are supporting and TorFX (www.torfx.com) are sponsoring. Called ‘Our Spain’ (www.ourspain.es) it will bring together bloggers and writers from across Spain, writing about their part of Spain, in one book, with any proceeds going to support the work done by many exceptional people across Spain to help various abandoned and rescued animals. The book will also list all the rescue centres, charities and good causes working to help these unfortunate animals, with the plan being to group the articles and the details by region. In many ways the book will be a guide book written
by those that have chosen to live in and write about this amazing country. But it will be much more than a book, thanks to the generous support being provided by the project partners: The articles will be syndicated and published. The articles will be recorded for podcasts and an audiobook. The project is open to all who feel that they can contribute! Where contributors have their own site they will be required to promote the book, as will rescue centres and animal support projects that are listed. Any, and all, proceeds will go towards helping these good causes. No contributor, or any partner involved in the production of the project will receive any financial reimbursement.
Gaunty is going to put his not inconsiderable support behind the project as well, and TorFX a leading foreign exchange broker offering excellent exchange rates for all your international money transfer requirements, who already help by sponsoring our ALStrays cat and dog transport project (www.alstrays.com), are going to help with the production of the book. Thanks to the team at RTN, who will also be helping in determining how funds are allocated when appropriate, I will provide future project updates here as well as on my blog (www.almerimarlife.com). Initially if you would like to contribute, or have an animal support project that you would like to be included, please put the details on www.ourspain.es or email chris@almerimarlife.com.
Chris is a freelance writer who writes a monthly column for the Telegraph Expat as well as a weekly column for the RTN. He lives in Almerimar with his wife Sands, five cats, two Harley-Davidsons and more often than not a bottle of red wine. Genuine concerns over Spanish Banks by
Christina Brady
Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca
With a sense of inevitability the spotlight has landed again on Spain. There are three major causes of concern: the exposure of Spanish banks, regional governments’ fiscal profligacy and a risk that structural reforms won’t reap benefits soon enough. Spain’s long-term sovereign credit rating has been revised down yet again this time to BBB+ from A while the outlook on the long-term rating is negative. “The downgrade reflects our view of mounting risks to Spain’s net general government debt as a share of GDP in light of the contracting economy,” according to a Standard & Poor’s report, which highlighted a deteriorating budget deficit trajectory and the increasing likelihood that the banking sector will require further fiscal support. The decision comes after an assessment by the International Monetary Fund that found “pockets of vulnerabilities” in the country’s banking sector. While 90% of the sector was found to be sufficiently capitalised, it said that 10 banks/ Caja’s without naming them, were identified as posing a contagion threat. The government has already rescued a number of banks that were too exposed to a decade-long construction boom that crashed in 2008, and investors fear vulnerable lenders will be hit by another wave of loan defaults due to the slowing economy. “It’s a very challenging situation. I don’t think that the banks are cornered yet, but the government must
come out soon to say how they will address them,” said Gilles Moec, an economist with Deutsche Bank. One in five of the loans by Spanish banks to the bust real estate and construction sectors are seen as “doubtful”, i.e. at serious risk of never being repaid. Against some €136bn (£112bn) in potentially toxic loans, Spanish banks hold only €50bn in loss provisions. And things are likely to get worse. House prices have declined quickly over the past six months and may fall by another 35 per cent, if there is to be the same level of adjustment as seen in Ireland. This is troubling, firstly, because Spain cannot afford to bail out its banks. And, secondly, because Spanish banks have been the main recent buyers of Spanish sovereign debt. If these banks don’t have the cash to buy Spanish debt, then who will? This massively increases the prospect of a self-fulfilling bond run on Spain and the chances of an ill-fated Spanish bailout. As a result the IMF report said that Spanish banks may require greater reliance on public money, instead of drawing resources from Spain’s industry funded bank deposit guarantee scheme, which has provided asset protection funding for lenders that have purchased their bailed out rivals. In addition to this the Bank of Spain said the economy
contracted by 0.4% in first three months of this year, after shrinking by 0.3% in the final quarter of last year. Spain’s GDP is now expected to contract by 1.5% in 2012 and by a further 0.5% in 2013. Previous estimates by the ratings agency placed this rate of contraction at closer to 0.3% in 2012 and 1% in 2013. On top of all this came the news that Spanish unemployment has hit a new record high, the number of unemployed people reached 5,639,500 at the end of March, with the unemployment rate hitting 24.4%, the national statistics agency said. In the first three months of the year, 365,900 people in Spain lost their jobs. The country has the highest unemployment rate in the European Union and it is expected to rise further this year. Watching how they make good the mistakes, repair the joists and put everything back together again is a very satisfying experience, mostly because you don’t have to do it yourself. If only every repair job were as simple. Most of us would like to think we can turn our hands to a little DIY but faced with cracks appearing or any major structural problem and you’re definitely best to leave it to the experts. Of course, finding the experts in Spain is not always that easy. The conundrum is whether to find a Spanish builder who appears to do a good job but who you can’t communicate with or the odd-job British builder. Whoever you choose and however careful you might be you always run the risk of something going wrong and you won’t have DIY SOS coming to the rescue. So, if you and Do-It-Yourself don’t mix you might have opted for buying a new property. At least that way you shouldn’t have to worry about refurbishments for a good few years yet. However, sometimes new property is not all that we hoped for. There can be teething troubles as the new build settles in. These might just be to do with the finish or, more worryingly, they might on occasions be structural. Either way, the good news is that there are laws to protect the new property purchaser. The builder or developer has to take full responsibility for any defects, hidden or visible. The finished product is down to them whether it’s an electrical, plumbing or structural fault. The
claim period does vary depending on the extent and severity of the problem. For example: Classification
Example
Period of claim
The finish
Painting Floor tiles Doors
1 year
The habitation
If it affects satisfactory use
3 years
The structure
Foundations 10 years Pillars Beams Framework and supporting walls
It is important that you make your claim as soon as you can after spotting the defect. For structural claims your builder was required to take out insurance and may also have taken out additional, discretionary insurance for habitation. You can also claim if you bought a new property second or even third hand, provided it is within the time frame. If you are buying from a private individual there is less of a guarantee. You will only be covered for six months for hidden defects. It will also depend upon there being any clauses in the contract or deeds. A law firm, like Ábaco, can check this for you. And for those who still prefer to ‘do it themselves’, if it all goes wrong you’ve only got yourself to blame. If you have concerns about your new-build property you can contact Ábaco on (00 34) 96 670 3748

Urdangarin and Torres seek plea bargain to avoid jail IT IS rumoured that the Duke of Palma and his business partner Diego Torres decided to plead guilty in order not to avoid imprisonment over the NĂłos Institute scandal. Sources this week indicated that lawyers acting on behalf of the Duke and Torres made preliminary appointments with the prosecutor to negotiate a possible plea bargain.
from the NĂłos Institute, which would normally carry a prison term of two years. Meanwhile Manuel Gonzalez Peeters, the lawyer representing Diego Torres, denied that a plea bargain was being tabled but refused to be drawn on whether such an arrangement might later be considered.
Any agreement reached would necessarily involve a plea of guilt over the embezzlement of public funds
Toll chaos as drivers refuse to pay up
IN CATALONIA there was chaos this week when hundreds of drivers stubbornly refused to pay the motorway toll to enter the AP7 resulting in 12 and 13 hour queues. Toll workers indicated that all morning on Wednesday drivers of vehicles festooned with Catalan flags and posters refused to pay and were required to produce identification prior to receiving a fine notice at home.
Bicycle man goes off the rails Bike tickets are free on Renfe
TRAIN NETWORK Renfe has denounced a 21-year-old resident of Tarragona for fraudulently travelling for free by train for several months by using a ticket issued for a bicycle. Bikes are carried at zero cost on Renfe trains but the system requires a ticket to be issued. The distance that the man travelled free should have cost 2,300â‚Ź but by using a ticket issued via the internet and changing the ticket to his name he was able to pass through ticket readers undetected. He also invited his sister and a friend to travel with him, purchasing a total of 32 tickets between Barcelona, Seville and Madrid. The man admits to buying the tickets online and making the changes but denies fraud.

04 - 10 MAY 2012
IN A trial carried out to extend our business to new regions, UK Tax Refund SL aided a British resident to complete all the forms needed to make him fiscally correct in Spain and obtain a refund of his overpaid UK Tax. This has now been repaid to him and his UK tax is NT: zero. Organising our tax in Spain, by UK Tax Refund SL Many of us have seen our disposable income reduce as the pound lost value against the Euro. Going through this process can be a way of restoring some of that income. Depending where your pension comes from and how much it is, some will not pay tax at all. Over the years we have carried out this service for hundreds of clients in this category, and they now live totally tax free. Not everyone fits the criteria for this but a simple phone call or email will tell you if you do. It always pays to maintain your tax affairs in order. As a British citizen living in Spain, you should follow the rules which stipulate the way to deal with income tax. And if you do the right thing then you will reach the same rights as Spanish people in other matters as Capital Gains,
Inheritance Tax, etc. But first of all, to reap these benefits, your income tax has to be re-organised. UNIQUE SERVICE TO BRITISH RESIDENTS IN SPAIN We offer a unique service to British residents in Spain, where we ensure that a client’s tax affairs in both Spain and the UK are dealt with correctly and any overpaid tax is refunded under the double tax agreement between Spain and the UK. Yes, some people will have to pay tax in Spain, usually less than you pay in the UK, and a refund of UK tax can help you lead a better life here in Spain. You might think there must be lots of forms to be filled in; yes there are a few, but we fill them in for you, and when we visit you we answer any questions you may have, check the forms and then it is just a matter of signing the papers and we do everything else including couriering the papers to UK so they
do not get lost. As UK Tax Refund SL works very close with the HMRC, your process will be followed very closely by us from the beginning to the end, until you receive the phone call to let you know your refund has arrived. Remember, just a phone call! We look forward to hearing from you! For help on any of these things please telephone us on 96 563 6938 or 96 569 0518. Gardening strategies by
Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors
AS WE wander around Spain and meet many people at talks and shows we are very aware of the varying gardening strategies of both the expat and Spanish population of amateur and professional gardeners. At one extreme there are those who believe in establishing a garden over a number of years that they can watch and nurse/nurture into maturity; something in harmony with the evolution of the microclimate of various zones of the garden and to be enjoyed increasingly over the decades within a controlled budget. At the other end of the scale are those who can’t wait to totally change their gardens each year following the trends of the Chelsea Flower Show which they watch on British TV or even visit each year. Often such changes ignore the seasonal variations in microclimates as money is no problem and a 400€ tree from the Brazilian jungle that will for sure be allowed to die the first winter as replaceable before next year’s open house barbecue for neighbours and business associates. Both are possible and within various economic circles legitimate
investments. But most readers will be aware of the increasing cost of plants and the increasing hostility of recent hot summers and cold winters. Also some readers will be accepting that it is now impossible to re-establish the wonderful banks of geraniums of twenty years ago and the oasis or drive-lined collections of palm trees. And it is not just we in Spain that suffer. In relation to palms, the spring edition of the Mediterranean Gardening Society journal had three articles looking at the disastrous palm problem in the Balearics, France and Greece and bemoaning the fact that the situation in those countries lacked the strict controls and success of the Spanish palm beetle eradication programs. Have we missed something? Even today we have passed numerous dead un-treated or felled palms, deceased palms dumped in the countryside, long avenues of recently planted tall palms to enhance the entrance to towns and villages that seem to still have surplus funds, and had discussions with garden centres who recommend that tall palms be replaced by short young ones that can be more easily watched and treated preventively. To get the most from your garden it is worth reviewing your garden against the following criteria for a successful garden for the average expat family. • Enables us to enjoy wandering around and sit in the garden throughout the year. • Has colour and perfume throughout the year. • Is economic in its watering needs.

What is your gardening strategy?
• Does not need a significant budget for new plants each spring. • Is healthy in that few pests appear and we rarely have to spray with insecticides or fungicides. • Produces a diversity of healthy edible flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit. • Is a haven for interesting wildlife. If you are not there yet, come and discuss the possibilities of achieving such a garden at one of our Spring talks – look up the first posting on our website www.gardeninginspain.com for the schedule of forthcoming talks – or visit our Gardening Corner stand no 43 at the Homes Gardens And Outdoor Living Show at the Miguel de Salinas Castle complex on Tuesday or Wednesday 22nd/23rd May. We look forward to speaking to and helping a good number of readers on those days. Looking at the full programme it looks as you can look forward to a good day or half day out. And remember that apartment gardens can be as attractive and productive as villa gardens with a little creativity. The ideas in our books are there to help you on your journey to really enjoying the joys of outdoor living in Spain. Happy Spring Gardening!

The magic of diet GUESTS AT a Costa Blanca health resort like to think their “amazing results” are a miracle – owners of the Obsidian Retreat Andrew and Carol West are more down to earth, they know the achievements are down to the magic of science. By Jack Troughton Diet is the heart of the achievements and meals are freshly prepared and packed with nutrients that help the body recover from the additive rich convenience food typical of modern living. It is, say guests ‘life changing’. And in a bid to spread the word, an experiment has just been completed filming nine people who arrived in Spain with various medical complaints. All showed vast improvements through a programme that also includes exercise, mindset and education. The Obsidian Retreat is also used by people – including celebrities – as a place to wind down, cleanse the body and recharge the batteries. Speaking at the converted farmhouse and until recently, a three star hotel just outside Benissa, Andrew told RTN how guests suffering Type 2 diabetes – the silent killer – enabled people to reduce and eventually to give up medication, while the programme also helped weight loss and the treatment of obesity. He said the nine included four guests suffering Type 2 and one with Type 1 diabetes, a man recovering from a stroke, a person with MS and another suffering irritable bowel syndrome. RESULTS “The results were amazing, although we expected them to happen, but amazing to the normal eye,” he said. The four Type 2 diabetics left “completely off their medication”, said Andrew, while the man suffering the Type 1 disease had reduced his insulin from 60 units a day to seven or eight. The 70-year-old stroke victim – his wife was the ninth of the party – arrived in a wheelchair but left walking with the help of a stick and speaking clearly, speeding up his recovery by months, while the 30-year-old MS sufferer saw her balance improve and speech difficulties vanish. Andrew added: “When she left, she still had
MS, we haven’t got a miracle cure, but we showed what can be achieved through diet. “What the film of the experiment will who is just by changing diet and adding exercise, people can change – that is the idea because we are not a miracle centre.” Around half the people arriving at the retreat have visited before or been told of the results. Andrew and Carol and their team want to map the results to be able to prove scientifically why the regime works. FRESH The food is vegan – the day starts with freshly prepared juices and ends with a ‘help yourself’ buffet. There is a burger and chips night – again a vegan version. “The food is why many people come back,” added Andrew. “Everyone thinks vegans are very unhealthy, they eliminate things from their diet but don’t replace them with nutrients they actually need. Here you get highly nutritious food.” Weight falls off at the rate of 1.1lb, half a kilo in new money, per day. “People come for a week and eat all this strange food and get on the scales at the end and have this massive weight loss. “They cannot quite understand it – but the reason is we have given them nutrients, the body understands nutrients, it doesn’t understand calories. Given nutrients the body can live on a lot less – there are no other supplements, there is nothing clever.” He said restoring people’s health “is something we do on a daily and weekly basis” by introducing the non-dairy plant based diet. “All we are doing is helping people get into a different way of thinking – people go away and change their lives, I am not saying they have to give up meat forever but allow them to make choices,” said Andrew. “And our Carol reputation is growing, which is fantastic.” juicing For more information call 96 574 7161, some email infor@obsidianretreat.com or visit fruit and www.healthretreatspain.com vegetables

Life spanish
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Blogs about Spanish THIS ARTICLE is made up of items that have been appearing over recent months in my blog http://janecronin.wordpress.com which you can also get to via the homepage of my website. They come under various categories such as “false friends” “favourite sayings” “Spanish society” and so on. I hope you enjoy them. FEW THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE This is a two-pronged false friend. Free doesn’t mean “libre” but sometimes it does, and it doesn’t mean “gratis” but sometimes it does. A much easier way of saying the same thing is that “free” has two translations in Spanish, related to its two implied meanings in English – free as in “open or liberated” and free as in “you don’t have to pay”. When someone is let out of prison, or when you leave a job you hate, you might say “I’m free!” “¡Estoy libre!” A teenager challenges his/her parents with “I’m free to do as I please” (“Soy libre para hacer lo que me da la gana”). Notice the use of “ser” and “estar” here (I’m in a state of freedom – estar; I’m a free person – ser.) You can watch my video which explains this difference in the video tutorial section of my website. Back to the point, “libre” means “open” as well, that’s why when you see a sign that says “buffet libre” it doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay for it, but it is open to any paying customer to partake. In other words it’s not for a private party or selected group of people. “Free” meaning “you don’t have to pay” in Spanish is “gratis” or “gratuito”. If an advertisement for an event says “entrada gratis” then your wallet is safe. Interesting “gratuitous” does not mean this in English – yet another False Friend. THE FRENCH MONOPOLY ON DEJÁ VU I suffer from a form of “dejá vu” in my teaching – that feeling of “Have I taught you this before – or was it to someone else?”. Students are usually fairly useless at helping in this situation, perhaps
because they don’t want to admit that they’ve forgotten it anyway! One day I mentioned the “dejá vu” problem to a large audience, upon which one bright spark piped up: “How do you say Dejá vu in Spanish?” Well, I couldn’t think of an answer so replied: “How do you say Dejá vu in English?” – to which he replied “touché.” I rather liked that exchange, but never got round to finding out how to say Dejá vu in Spanish! The problem was solved the other day when another student reported back their findings by asking a native Spanish speaker the same question. Guess what she said … “Dejá vu”. Why have the French got the monopoly on this experience? A NOISY CITY Pronouncing a foreign language properly involves exercising the muscles in your mouth and throat. In the same way as when you indulge in unusual physical exercise and then ache the next day, it can be difficult and even uncomfortable to move your mouth around in unaccustomed ways! We can’t always rely on our ear to help us imitate sounds, sometimes we have to concentrate on the movement of our mouths. Here is a good exercise which you can do whilst still lying in bed! Say “noisy city” in Spanish… ciudad ruidosa. The exercise consists of moving quickly between the two narrow vowels “i” and “u” in both directions. The “i” requires us to have narrow lips pulled back at the edges, and the “u” requires our lips to protrude. Try it – it beats jogging any day.

In the blood THE AMERICAN Civil War took place in the 1860s and the Freedom Marches 100 years later are for most people a dim memory but not in the deep South where the cancer of racism is still deeply rooted. That’s why the death of a white firebrand evangelist, bound and beaten to death in an apparent S&M session, lights a fire brighter than the crosses of the Klu Klux Klan. And what is the connection to a genetic theory that sexual integration will eventually breed out the darker side of each race’s genes? Detective Carson Ryder has his own problems while mayhem falls around him. He’s edgy and unpredictable while plunged into circumstances that include the discovery of an abandoned baby in a boat near a burned out shack, a harpooned body and signs of a struggle. Life going out
Stylish dining in a relaxing atmosphere at Frissan SAN MIGUEL de Salinas is a delightful, slightly rustic village sitting in the hills overlooking a number of towns near Torrevieja in the Costa Blanca South. So it is perhaps fitting that Frissan, a charming restaurant started by Stuart and Jayne Marsh in May of 2007, is situated in such a peaceful and idyllic location. Frissan will be celebrating their 5th anniversary on May 5th, which is no mean feat for a restaurant started just before the current recession sank its teeth into the world economy. It’s a truism that often the best things can be tucked away in unobtrusive places, and Frissan is no exception. Stuart and Jayne have assiduously carved out a reputation for tasty, detailed dishes bursting with flavour. They believe that part of their success comes from unstintingly choosing fresh, quality ingredients for their creations – a basic tenet of good quality food that many restaurants seem determined to forget. The Frissan experience begins before you even start to eat. The reception is warm and welcoming, and depending on the weather – and how early you booked – you will have a choice between eating indoors, or outside to enjoy a beautiful Spanish evening. The ambience of the restaurant itself is relaxing and uncluttered, allowing you
The charming restaurant
to focus on your company and your meal rather than on any pretentious surroundings. And it truly is the food which is the star of this performance. Frissan’s menu is well-thought-out and diverse, with 2 and 3 course options priced at a very reasonable €13 and €15 respectively - offering great value for money. When chose the soup of the day and chicken satay skewers for starters, followed by the duck breast and Moroccan chicken as mains. All of the food was delightful, well presented and wrapped in an enticing aroma. My other half, a bit of a duck fanatic to be quite honest, was particularly delighted
with her duck breast main – vowing to tell all and sundry of its virtues and to be back in the near future for more. As a general rule I try to have a maximum of two courses when eating, simply to watch the calories and to focus on enjoying the quality rather than quantity of food. Despite this, I was looking forward to trying out one of the desserts and eventually decided on the cheesecake. A good, homemade dessert can be hard to come by, and Stuart’s love for what he does shines through. Frissan is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 7pm until late: to book a table, please call Stuart or Jayne on 96 672 3485 or 687 948 074.

Paris, Milan or Los Montesinos… ON A beautiful sunny morning at the end of April once again Louise Brandly and her team, dresser and models wowed the ladies and gentlemen who attended the fabulous Fashion Show at La Herradura in Los Montesinos. More than fifty ladies attended and as well as day wear, Looking Good Boutique showed a selection of golf wear, casual wear, a stunning Mother of the Bride outfit and also its lovely range of shoes which are a new addition to the boutique. Tickets were on sale at €10 but this was a ‘double your money’ ticket as anyone buying at the show could use their ticket as a €10 voucher and then keep it and use it again on their next visit to Looking Good Boutique.
HOMES, GARDENS AND OUTDOOR LIVING The whole event raised a whopping €430 for the charity Paul Cunningham Nurses. This event really was like a major fashion show as photographer Rishmie Koers was there for the whole event. Rishmie is just 21 years old and speaks five languages. She is doing a BA (hons) degree in Photography and will be doing several more studies locally. Rishme’s next project will be on the 22nd and 23rd May at the Homes, Gardens and
Outdoor Living Show at San Miguel Castle. At this show there will be a two day Art and Photography competition and all monies raised from this will go to the charities Paul Cunningham Nurses and EMAUS. Another very special event not to be missed! Anyone wishing to enter either competition should email sueinthesun@hotmail.co.uk or call 639 318 526.

Carobs: food for the gods or still just for donkeys HERE IN Spain we are blessed with many edible plants that we wouldn’t encounter normally in the UK especially on allotments, including Prickly Pear (the leaves and the fruit), Nispero (Loquats) and in particular Carobs. Carobs here in Spain have been used for generations mainly as a foodstuff for animals; the seeds as a glue in the paper industry (but can also be used to stabilise ice-cream); and the remainder as a vegetarian substitute for chocolate. Here is a recipe I devised for The Guild of Master Chefs in the UK which drove them mad because they couldn’t get hold of the carobs, although I sent some roasted chippings back with our catering butcher who handed them out to a favoured few. When I tried this recipe out on some local Spanish builders who were complete Foodies they loved it, until I told them what was in it: one said he couldn’t even attempt to give it to his Dad who thought carobs only suitable for animals. To make the powder, first you must harvest your Carobs. Then you will have to remove the seeds and discard. Roast the outer shells in the oven (after washing) until they are dried out and smelling reasonably toasted. Cool and grind in a coffee or spice grinder. Carob-Marinated Short Ribs Marinade: 1 litre boiling stock or water 1 dessert spoon carob powder 2 tsp salt 1 dessert spoon dark brown sugar 1 tsp black treacle 2 heaped tsp castor sugar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon Olive oil ½ tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp whole black peppercorns 4 sprigs fresh rosemary or 2 tsp dried To the 1litre of boiling stock or water add 1 dessert spoon roasted Carob powder. Stir then leave to infuse for 3-4 minutes then strain and discard grouts. To the hot liquid add: 2 teaspoons salt 1 dessert spoon dark brown sugar 1 tsp black treacle 2 heaped teaspoons white sugar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon Olive Oil ½ teaspoon chilli flakes 1 teaspoon whole black pepper corns 4 sprigs fresh rosemary or 2 teaspoons dried. Allow to cool completely before adding 1½ kilos of beef short ribs (although this recipe works well with Pork and Chicken).Allow to marinade in fridge overnight before draining and discarding the liquid. NOTE: This marinade was also used to soak a single piece of beef overnight which was then roasted or grilled on a BBQ. Cooking sauce 1 Onion chopped 2 rashers Bacon diced 3 garlic cloves 1 tsp chill flakes
If you have a question about food email cheeseman@roundtownnews.com
2 dessert spoons tomato sauce or ketchup 1 dessert spoon dark soy sauce 2tsp Dijon mustard 1 dessert spoon Carob coffee infused in ½ litre boiling water (as for marinade) ½ Litre Chicken stock 1 tablespoon vinegar In a frying pan sauté 2 chopped rashers of bacon until brown, remove and then sauté the drained ribs in the bacon fat residue until also brown, remove and add to bacon in a roasting pan. Fry 1chopped onion and 3 chopped garlic cloves together until transparent add to same roasting pan. Stir together in the frying pan 1tsp chilli flakes, 1 dessert spoon Soy Sauce, 2 dessert spoons tomato sauce or ketchup, 2tsps Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon vinegar half a litre of made up carob liquid (as before) plus half a litre of chicken stock once bought to the boil pour over ribs and bake in a preheated oven Gas mark 3 (325F 160C) for approx 2¼ hours until the ribs are cooked and tender and the cooking liquor has reduced to a sticky and unctuous sauce. LOS ALCAZARES is one of the nicest towns in Southern Spain. Located just past San Javier airport on the AP7, Los Alcazares sits on the shores of the beautiful Mar Menor and boasts some of the finest beaches on the costas.
Some of the great shops at the Rio Nalon
Los Alcazares attracts visitors from all over Spain and Europe and is particularly well known for its extensive water sports facilities. Los Alcazares has a permanent population of 15,000 residents although during the summer months that number increases ten fold. And with several championship golf courses within the locality, it is the ideal base for golf enthusiasts from around the world. The Mar Menor is well known
for its healing powers thanks to its very high salt content and as it doesn’t have a current as such, it is also very safe for children and has a depth of no more than seven metres; it’s more like a warm bath, especially as it is renowned for having a temperature of five degrees higher than the Mediterranean. As well as the natural attractions of Los Alcazares, the town boasts a thriving business district and the Rio
Nalon, located near what is known locally as the Mercadona Square, has lots of great shops, bars and restaurants that can provide you with whatever you want or need. From lingerie to linguini the Rio Nalon has it all and offers you a great shopping and social experience. So what are you waiting for? Get down there now and enjoy all that Rio Nalon and Los Alcazares have to offer.

Mark Phoenix Murphy Dhp MIAPH MNRAH
Losing weight with the Hypnoband FAT, DIETS, exercise. Three words that send immense dislike coursing through any person’s veins.
be they fat, thin, short or tall, no person appreciates having to stay in shape, but it’s something that most people’s lives revolve around - that burning need to look good and feel great is the norm nowadays in our superficial society and although at times, that need may grow obsessive and debilitating, in truth it can be most beneficial. After all, what is wrong with wanting to be healthy? Surely nothing. A healthy diet equals a healthy life. Something we all want and crave, it’s just the way we approach that need that is important. Being overweight and unhappy is a miserable state of affairs. If you’re looking to lose weight, there’s nothing worse than looking at that mountain you have to climb, just to get to a normal weight. Never mind getting your body to how you want it to look. It’s so easy to give up, to just think I’ll try again in the future and comfort-eat your way out of your misery. But no matter how much you believe it, that day will never come unless you literally take the bull by the horns and fight for your fitness. It’s your choice, how you start, but know that there are many people out there, who can help. Mark Phoenix Murphy is a registered hypnotherapist and psychotherapist, and he can help you, so if you believe that you have an unhealthy relationship towards food, then speaking to him can help clarify and resolve those issues,
enabling you to look forward to a healthy, bright future, unblighted by crippling issues regarding food. The Costa Blanca and Costa Calida’s only registered and licensed HypnoBand, it has been called a revolutionary weight-loss aid and it can also help those of you with a BMI over 25 to radically lose weight. The HypnoBand is a virtual gastric band. Without the pain, without the surgery and most importantly without the price! Within four sessions, Mark can help you turn your life around; this is no fad or con, but a genuine aid to those of us who find shifting those pounds immensely difficult. It shouldn’t be seen as a quick fix, nor as ‘the light at the end of the tunnel’, but another option available to you; one that won’t break the bank and can genuinely help. Mark will guide you through the process of speaking to your ‘consultant’, having the ‘gastric band’ fitted and ‘tightening’ the band surrounding your stomach. This may seem an unusual and perhaps unlikely solution, but look around on the Internet - you’ll see and read testimonials of people, who have lost weight and whose lives have turned around, because this procedure has opened their eyes and changed their views concerning food, dieting and exercise. It has even helped clients suffering from Diabetes to reverse the illness and keep it in check. If you have tried other types of therapies and been
unsuccessful in your goals, please do not be put off, this is a unique system and has been trademarked to ensure you come to the right place. Why not come along for a Free 30 minute consultation first, to ensure you are suitable. Mark holds registered clinics all over the Costa, see his ad below for more details or just give him a ring on: 654 202 996. Visit his websites for further information: www.hypnospain.com
Please call Mark now on 654 202 996 to book your free initial consultation or visit him at www.HypnoSpain.com Mark’s clinics are held at the Family Medical Centre, Albir; The International Clinic Moraira; The Physical Therapy Clinic Villamartin and the Dental Clinic Camposol in total confidentiality.

Be Nice this Sunday By Louise Clarke The countdown has started for this weekend’s Bay Radio ‘Be Nice Day’, a unique fundraising initiative to help charities across four provinces, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, and Almeria raise funds to help local charities that have seen a significant reduction in fundraising and donations due to the economic crisis as well as help feed the unemployed in the local community via the nationwide charity Caritas. Thousands of people will be participating on Sunday in dozens of 5km walks that will be taking place along the Costas from the town of Barx, Valencia in the north to Mojacar, Almeria in the south and there will be live on air start on Bay Radio at 11.15am with Bob and Noelle. The radio station wants to put the fun back in fundraising and many of the charities have organised a day of fun events and music to follow the walk. FULL SUPPORT To encourage sponsorship Bay Radio is running seven competitions including best costume which will add to the flavour of the day as many people are planning to dress up, but all the charities stress that fancy dress is optional turning up on the day and supporting the charities is the most important thing. Many of the local mayors have given the event their full backing which includes designing the route, starting the walk from the Town Hall, even opening the Town Hall on the day and entering teams to walk in their area to help raise funds.
The beneficiaries include Cancer Charities, Help Organisations, Children’s Homes, Animal Charities, Disabled Children and Alzheimer sufferers as well as the local needy through Caritas.
SPONSORS Bay Radio Charity Coordinator Magpie Latham told RTN: “When you hear about people living in cars or on the street, who don’t have the money to feed themselves due to the current high level of unemployment, something has to be done to help them and these walks are Bay Radio’s way of helping the local communities across our broadcast network. We want everyone to join in by participating in one of the walks and if possible getting sponsorship.” If everyone walking pays their 5€ entry fee and got one person to sponsor them for the same amount, the fundraising will be doubled and that will go a long way to helping all the charities involved. Magpie added: “Of course it would be marvellous if the participants could get more sponsors as that would really make a difference. All the walks are easy and have been designed so that anyone can take part; it is not a race it is about participating and contributing to charity and of course having some fun. If you only want to walk 200 metres I don’t think anyone will mind.” Information about the walk in your area with full details can be found on www.bayradio.fm or contact charity@bayradio.fm. To enter just turn up at the start area this Sunday, 6th May at 10.45am and register.

CAFÉ GOLF in San Javier organised a Charity Golf Day at La Tercia in aid of MABS Cancer Support Group in Murcia. The weather was perfect and the teams started the day with a putting and chipping competition before playing the 18 hole course. There was also a raffle and entertainment courtesy of Nick Barker, ensuring that everyone had an enjoyable evening. A total of 623€ was raised, which included a donation of £100 from one of the guests. Fundraising Co-ordinator, Janet Bell, thanked the golfers and evening guests. She told RTN: “Fundraising is hard work, but made very worthwhile by people like Nike and Neil of Café Golf and the generosity of all who contributed to the day’s success.

Our patients are a testimony to the success of the treatment of osteoarthritis
Benijofar Chiropractic Clinic
Dr Hans C. Madsen D.C. - Member of the Danish, Spanish & European Chiropractic Assoc Contrary to popular belief, osteoarthritis is not due to agerelated ‘wear and tear’ on your joints. It tends to be more common as you get older – affecting around 80% people over the age of 50 to some degree – but it is not a normal part of ageing. Osteoarthritis develops in a joint when changes occur in the cartilage; the soft tissue that protects the surface of a bone and allows the joint to move freely. These changes affect how the joint works and may be due to damage that occurred to the joint many years before any symptoms appear. Treatment of osteoarthritis is largely aimed at controlling the inflammation, reducing the pain associated with the inflammation and if possible, slowing the progression of the disease.
Shockwave therapy offers an exciting addition to the treatment options for osteoarthritis, with little to no risk of adverse side effects.
- Shockwave therapy can help significantly reduce the inflammation of the joint. - The therapy helps to slow the progression of osteoarthritis and it can actually alter the process of cartilage degradation. - The shockwaves stimulate certain components within the body, so the body is able to heal. Shockwave therapy is able to accomplish this even in chronic cases. - Shockwave therapy seems to have a direct effect on nerves, diminishing pain. - The treatment vastly increases movement. We find that many patients get an initial degree of improvement almost immediately following treatment. The shockwave therapy targets the calcification around the affected joint and breaks this up and disperses it with repeated treatments. Laser therapy is then applied, which helps to remove these calcified deposits out through the bloodstream and out of the system. It has been used successfully to treat people with necrosis of the femoral head, eliminating the need for a hip replacement in some cases. Our patients are able to resume normal lives free of the inhibitions that they previously experienced. Please refer to our website for more information and if you are a patient that has benefitted from our treatments, please send us your testimony via the website.

Have these people no shame! BRITISH SOCIALITE Amanda De Cadenet and former wife of Duran Duran bassist John Taylor has long since been known for her racy lifestyle, most especially when she was a girl-abouttown in her younger years, a time when she always made sure she courted then teased the press with tales of who’s doing it with whom … (bit posh that word but we are talking the upper crust set here). Now in her early late thirties Amanda astutely resorted to type on the debut of her new US chat show ´The Conversation´ when she asked her guests Gwyneth Paltrow, Zoe Saldana, Jane Fonda and comedienne Sarah Silverman what makes them most comfortable in intimate settings. This rather outrageous question raised an eyebrow from Fonda and prompted de Cadenet’s longtime pal Paltrow to shriek, “What?” … But they all answered.
Take a hike gandy man!
Silverman said, “I do enjoy a good sound missionary-ing... and I like to be manhandled,” … At this point I need to indulge in some personal censoring as I don’t want the girls in the office to go into shock and possibly even pass out as a result of what the lady guests said as it just got stronger and stronger topped off with Star Trek superhun Zoe Saldana quoting a total of four of her fav positions … don’t forget this is primetime TV … The mercurial Jane Fonda then came to the rescue when she said “While I am quite flexible and can kneel, it’s not quite as comfortable for me as it used to be before I had a fake knee ... I like to be either lying down or sitting up on a couch with him “… easy Jane, the vicars wife reads this … For those of you who are making notes the show is called ´The Conversation’ and is sure to be on UK
DAVID GANDY is a supermodel, yes, a male supermodel, but life is not too super for him right now and it has leaked out that in February he split with his girlfriend of 10 months Mollie King, singer of The Saturdays, with David being quoted as saying: “I´m just too perfect.” Apparently what the Essex boy meant was he likes everything perfect, house, car, cutlery all lined up straight, that sort of thing. Talking to magazine Men´s Health David then stuck his foot in his mouth when he said “I couldn’t put any woman in my life ahead of modeling fame,” then a dab more foot ´n mouth disease when he added “If either a relationship or my work must suffer, then I’m afraid it has to be the relationship … hopefully, one day a girl will come along and I’ll think she’s far superior to my work and … blah blah bladdie blah…” Fun footnote is that Mollie is now on the arm of Prince Harry.
From riches to rags
TOM CRUISE and Nicole Kidman adopted a child some years ago, called her Isabella and now the young lady is 19 years old and is living in Skid Row: now there´s an attention grabber if ever I wrote one. Let me explain… It has been reported in ´Now’ magazine that last year Isabella met and fell in love with a 23-year-old musician called Eddie Frencher ... okay, normal so far … Not so … With the teenager having stated quite clearly some years back that showbiz was not for her and her new beau seemingly rather fond of living life in the low lane, together they moved into a small apartment in a notorious LA neighbourhood dubbed ´Skid Row´. Now magazine then provided stats claiming that in the past six months dozens of assaults, robberies and two rapes have been reported just a stone’s throw from where the happy couple are living. This is family rebellion off the scale with Isabella choosing to move out of a 20 million dollar mansion in Beverley Hills into what sounds like a bit of a rat hole, but love is a many-splendoured thing, is it not? Nicole, Tom and Tom´s new wife Kate Holmes have done what they can to make Isabella change her mind and once again sit on the diamondencrusted kazi, but at the time of writing she was refusing to budge.

What’s on Viva TV this week VIVA TV broadcasts on the Torresat and Teleast Networks every day from 2.00pm until 10pm. To find out what else they are showing this week, you can view all their programmes and see their full listings at www.vivatv.es. In the meantime, to whet your appetite, RTN will highlight every week some of their brilliant programmes starting tonight at 7pm with An Evening With Lynda Bellingham. Lynda talks openly and frankly about her life growing up, her film career as well as her time in the Oxo ads and Loose Women. Tomorrow, 5th May at 6.30pm, Lets Talk sees Simon Baldock chatting to young journalist Rosie Stinson and motivational author Simone Segal. On Sunday at 7.30pm, in Learn The Lingo the lovely Martine teaches us some handy phrases in an accessible and entertaining way and on Monday at 6.30pm, Buying a Car in Spain is a step
by step guide that will hopefully prevent you falling into the pitfalls when buying a car here. Carrying on with the car theme, on Tuesday evening at 6pm, FAQ will answer all your questions on car maintenance and your own personal health matters. Then at 6pm on Wednesday 9th May, the fabulous local theatre group Dramatic Licence presents its comedy stage drama ‘Murdered to Death’. San Javier announce Jazz Festival XV ALBERTO NIETO, Festival Director of the San Javier International Jazz Festival, presented the full programme for the region’s most prestigious annual musical event at a press conference last Thursday. The presentation was introduced by the Mayor of San Javier, Juan Martinez Pastor, and the Councillor for Culture, Inmaculada Garcia Sánchez. The festival was born in 1998 as a result of the efforts of Alberto Nieto and a group of jazz fans, with the aid of the San Javier Town Hall through its Cultural Department. It has now matured into one of the most important cultural events in Murcia and Southern Spain. Headlining the fifteenth edition is one of the world’s best-selling music artists, Jethro Tull. The band has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide in a career that has spanned more than forty years. Jazz San Javier has always had a love affair with great jazz trios, as evident with the Paris based Italian jazz pianist Giovanni Mirabassi opening the festival on 6th July; along with the flamboyant Norwegian Tingvall Trio returning to San Javier the following evening; also appearing will be the Frank Harrington Trio with Scottish singer/actress Alyth McCormack. Blues fans will welcome the return of Keb’ Mo’; along with multi-Grammy nominated John Hiatt; and Spanish rock guitarist Jorge Salan; plus singer/actress Dana Fuchs (best
known for her role as Sadie in “Across the Universe”); and singer/songwriter Dayna Kurtz. Contemporary jazz artists include the long-standing Tom Harrell Quintet; and the Travellin’ Brothers Big Band; the renowned Miles Davis tribute band, Miles Smiles; Grammy award winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington with singer Dianne Reeves; plus Renegade Creation, a new fusion project featuring Michael Lamdau. Robben Ford, Jimmy Haslip and Gary Novak. Spanish artists include the Valencian jazz guitarist Ximo Tebar & IVAM Jazz Ensemble; the Sevillian Dorantes Quartet with special guest Flamenco singer Esperanza Fernández; and the José Luis Gutiérez Quartet with special guest Cuban singer Lucrecia. From Sao Paulo, Toquinho, best known for his collaborations with Vinicius de Moraes; and from Argentina jazz guitarist Luis Salinas, a firm favourite of the Festival Director. For the finale on 28th July, the festival award for services to jazz will go to Brazilian pianist, arranger, vocalist and songwriter, Eliane Elias. This year’s budget was slashed 40%, whilst the overall budget has been cut 70% over the last five years. Despite monetary concerns Mr Nieto has weaved his magic and produced a programme packed full off quality national and international artists. Understandably
XV San Javier International Jazz Festival July 2012
there are no mega-stars like George Benson or Chicago this year. However the inclusion of Jethro Tull as the headliner is a master stroke by Nieto, and sure to attract a packed house. The festival will be staged in the Auditorio Parque Almansa over eleven nights throughout July. A festival pass for 10 nights is available for 100 euros (Jethro Tull not included). Tickets are priced 12 – 35€ available from the festival office at the San Javier Town Hall, by telephoning 96 819 1588 or 96 819 1568, or emailing festivales@sanjavier.es For more information visit www.jazz.sanjavier.es

Windows 7 notepad Dee via email asks: I HAVE a new laptop with Windows Seven and my previous computer was an IBM and a lot easier to use. I want to write an ordinary letter but cannot find the program to do so. The shop in the UK said I have to buy and install Windows Office and a friend said I had to download OpenOffice. I tried to install OpenOffice and it downloaded OK but didn’t install. All I really need is to write ordinary quotes and letters etc so please can you advise me. Aunty Says: Hi Dee. Microsoft Office is very expensive but you do have 2 very simple Word Processor programs already in Windows 7 called Notepad and WordPad. You can do most of the common things with this and I sometimes use them for quick letters etc. If you click on ‘start’ and type wordpad or notepad into the box you will see it in the search results. Alternatively go to ‘start’ ‘all programs’ ‘accessories’ and you will find them both there.
Scanning documents ‘Hacked by Godzilla’ Roy via email asks: HI AUNTY, I am now almost bald having spent several hours pulling my hair out because I cannot remember how to scan a document into my computer. I know that I have to put it into Word but it just does not seem to want to give me the screen I require to scan it in. Can you please help me? Aunty Says: Hi Roy, I usually use the program that came with my scanner (HP Director in my case) which is on the CD. If you don’t have the CD you will be able to get the necessary software from the manufacturer’s website. Depending on which version of Word (or OpenOffice) you are using, it should also be possible to do this from within Word itself.

Dave via email asks: DEAR MADAM, I logged on to the internet at an internet cafe and next to Hotmail in the top appeared ‘Hacked by Godzilla’. I spoke to a visitor who knew something about computers who assured me that the individual concerned could not hack into my computer because it was being used on a private telephone line and the reason that he/she was able to hack into my PC via the internet was that I logged on a multi PC site. I would be grateful if you could confirm what I’ve been told and as it is undesirable and annoying, tell me how to remove it, please. Aunty Says: This is actually the Zodgila virus Dave which normally spreads via USB memory sticks. Most antivirus programs will detect this virus, but cannot always get rid of it. Try running an updated AVG and SuperAntiSpyware in safe mode (F8 before Windows starts) and let me know how you get on. It really doesn’t matter how you connect to the internet, you can always be hacked, the only thing you can do is reduce the likelihood by running a good up to date Anitvirus and firewall etc.
Writing Spanish emails Terry via email asks: HI AUNTY, and many congratulations on your page. I wonder if you can help? I have a laptop with an English keyboard. Is there a way to include accents as needed for writing emails in Spanish? I’m sure I’ve seen this done at some stage. Keep up the good work. Aunty Says: Hello Terry. To get the ñ key you hold down the Alt key and type 164 on the number pad, uppercase Ñ is the Alt key and 165. The c with a funny squiggle underneath is 135 and uppercase is 128. The upside down question mark is Alt and 168 and any others you need you can find here www.asciitable.com under the extended ASCII section. On a laptop you will need to activate the number pad, which is usually done by holding down the Fn key and pressing Num Lock.

Gadget Inspector Investigates:
Medisana ThermoDock THIS WEEK the Inspector feels the heat with the Medisana ThermoDock – an ingenious means of measuring your temperature using an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. We´re all familiar with the traditional thermometer – that thin sliver of glass with the mercury scale that you place under your tongue, armpit or elsewhere… you get the picture. But surely things must have moved on, I mean, how archaic is that? Well you´re in luck, if you have an iPhone (3G, 3GS, 4 and 4S), iPad (1 and 2) or iPod Touch (2nd, 3rd and 4th gen) the Medisana ThermoDock can take over so you can banish that prehistoric old relic to the back of the medicine cabinet for good. This clever little peripheral plugs into your gadget’s charging point and uses non-contact infrared technology to measure your body temperature. Just open up the VitaDock application, aim the device at the forehead, follow the on-screen instructions and bobs-your-temperature-taking-uncle you´ve got a temperature reading! The reading can then be stored, compared with other readings and even exchanged by email. And there are no worries about the accuracy either - the Medisana ThermoDock is a certified medical device. Amazingly the ThermoDock is not even limited to just taking body temperature, it can also be used to take readings from other surfaces and liquids – though it´s not recommended that you use it to check that the chip pan has reached temperature. So next time the kids are complaining about having a fever just before it´s time to leave for school, just whip out the ThermoDock and check them out – you can even email the result to the teacher as proof! The Inspectors Verdict: The Medisana ThermoDock certainly brings a whole new dimension to what your gadget can practically do for you. As long as it doesn´t turn into an ‘app for a hypochondriac’, you´ll be fine! Visit www.gadget-hound.co.uk/thermodock to purchase the Medisana ThermoDock for 79€. All prices quoted include delivery to Spain (subject to exchange rate fluctuations).

Contracts – where do you stand? ARE YOU wanting to move internet provider but being ‘bullied’ by your current supplier? Mrs Kennedy from Calpe tells us her story: “I joined -----in July 2011 for their wireless system, installed at a cost of 300€. All was okay for the first three days then all of a sudden the internet speed dropped so low that we couldn’t connect at all. The customer service department called me to see how we were getting on so I explained that it was not good and could they please fix it for me. Nobody got back to me! I called them to cancel and asked them to de-install the equipment and they told me that I was in an 18month contract and could not cancel. They did not even offer to come and fix the problem: I was expected to just put up with it. Because of this I did not pay my bill only to receive a phone call from the manager threatening to call the Guardia Civil, stating that by not paying the bill it was ‘theft of equipment.’ I was horrified and very scared.” This is only one example and goes to show the ‘bullying’ tactics used by some telecommunications companies to scare their customers into staying. There is NO such thing as a binding 18 month contract. If you are thinking of moving provider and are worried about changing please send a copy of your ‘contract’ to our legal department atcolumn@europa-network.com and we will be happy to advise you. Life horoscopes Mercury is ensuring that your current message is received loud and clear by those who need to hear it. Your dogged determination is about to be rewarded, and your patience and focus has seen you through a tough patch with wonderful results. With your need to take control, and the widening of your scope anything is possible, and you are truly on a winner at long last.
Mercury enters mid week and brings a chance to put all of your cards on the table for once. You have been doing your level best, but stubborn pride and the need to do what you do as best you can, have taken a toll on you. Someone is currently making things more difficult for you than they need to be, but this gives you a chance to shine and to show that you’re not to be messed with! Your curiosity this week is brought about by actions with a psychic Virgo and warring Mars. It will be very hard to make any changes, however much needed they may be, because you are unsure how to take all this on, and mindful of not stepping on someone’s toes. Follow your gut instincts and stall if you have to, since making up your mind right now isn’t really a fair option. You have been patient for a long while but something, or someone takes you over the edge this week. The likelihood of giving out a nasty nip is very high, and it is quite clear that this done you can go back to your current plans feeling so much better as a result. This is not a time to hide within that impenetrable shell, so go for it! It is a good time for somebody’s comeuppance! Outer conflicts react violently with your innermost vulnerabilities this week. Be true to yourself above all, and hold on before you are said to be clutching at straws, or re inventing yourself right now. The power of mighty Uranus and the devious energies of an untrustworthy Pluto in unstable Capricorn are to blame. Give the Cosmos a wide berth and take good care of you. Mars is stimulating and thought provoking as a guest, but you will want to find a way of bringing things very nicely to a full conclusion; if only to save your sanity this week. Look at where you have come from and just where you are going to give yourself control and leeway to make changes that put you back into pole position for everyone’s sake; and peace of mind. Saturn brings light and love and wisdom into a currently dark situation that appears to have no immediate solution; but which needs well and truly nipping in the bud before some actual damage is done. Use your well defined powers of balance to emphasise that someone is really barking up the wrong tree, and that balance and equilibrium will restore all. Actions with Mercury in your opposing sign of Taurus really do set the cat amongst the pigeons midweek. Though you can see something others can’t; you know instinctively that right now is not the time to make waves. Keep your temper and take notes because you’ll be better prepared when the time comes and it may very well be a lot sooner than you think. Plans are about to be made and you are paramount in all aspects of this organising. With Jupiter currently past sextile with a scheming Mercury it is only too plain that you wish to cover all aspects of the work in hand, and that you are, truly, the very best person for the job. Though you will leave no stone unturned, follow your basic instincts, above all. Pluto remains close and is sextiled by Chiron towards the end of the week, when you can take a well deserved breather. There seems to be a lot on your plate right now, and you are taking good care of something that has been added to your workload; simply because you can see the relevance and the need to take on board all that you know that you must in the scheme of things. Actions in your opposing sign of Leo see you taking offence about something that wasn’t meant to hurt you, but left unchecked has brought up problems of a private and sensitive nature. The way ahead is not for you to take along hard look at alternatives but to ensure others that you have started and that you will finish, and whatever they have to say there’s an end to it all! Chiron is there persistently telling you that you have other options right now, and not to put all your eggs in one basket. A wealth of talent should spur you into action this week, but something right now has made you put all your energy into other commitments and everything else appears to be on standby as you wait your opportunity patiently and diligently.

Chocolate box Life is just a box of chocolates, full of surprises, highly addictive and usually quite delicious. With various contents, some a surprise, some you will like and some you won’t, we can see variety catered for by different tastes, and on several layers. Screen idols of the past lay in bed wearing satin matinee jackets and gorging on a huge box of chocolates. Maybe for them too something sweet has always been seen as a sure cure for hunger or heartache. There are times when only chocolate will do, after all! The sheer indulgence and the comfort of the sugar rush are just some of the many reasons we turn to chocolate; dark, milk or white. If we are having a bad day, if we need a little energy, if things aren’t going exactly the right way, that’s a chocolate moment for sure. There are the hardest candies, and the juicy soft centres, there are the tastes of fruit, the crunch of nuts and the opulence of coffee, peppermint and Turkish delight. Each is an individual sensation in a closed box of mystery, waiting to be experienced, savoured and enjoyed. Spirit has several flavours, and allows each and everyone to enjoy a taste that is individual and personal. The Spiritual assortment provides a multitude of different sensations each too to be experienced and enjoyed. We can find our favourites,

and without a guide to help us we may discover that we got the equivalent of a strawberry cream when we really wanted nougat. The very best selection of Spirit can bring everything together in a very precise way. The hard centres are when we have lessons to learn, and the soft centres are just when we have really hit the right spot, dissolving away with ease. Our Spiritual box of chocolates is to share, as we see others being offered the choices we have so often taken in the past. We may wish that they try the chocolates we know are the best, but free selection and individual needs are met amazingly by Spirit as they are by Cadbury’s; depending on what specific comfort you are looking for. O.K. I know, chocolate is five minutes on the lips and twenty years on the hips, but who can possibly refuse an After Dinner mint, or a Violet cream or two, or more? Spirit brings us a wealth of possibilities in the sweetest of ways. Hidden in attractively packaged boxes each layer has the depth of opportunity just waiting temptingly to be released and to hit the spot when selected. Fulfilment, promise and a true guarantee of satisfaction with quality control and yet, not a calorie in sight!

Kenny, I was at your recent show in Rojales. You promised that if I had any questions you would help me, and I sent you an email shortly after. Your reply has helped me so much. Not only was it direct and straight to the point, it has explained something about me I didn’t realise. If anyone is in any doubt, or fears which way to go I will tell them my story, then they will know not to be afraid like me. S.F.C. Thank you for your message. I am glad things are better for you, you were so close, but what you have done is allow closure and you are free to move on right now. A great part of my audience work involves a private moment since I love shows but so very often I cannot say private things in public. I whispered in your ear after the show, and when you found the right question to be answered the email was the very best way. Thank you for your confidence in me, we got there in the end. God bless you!
If it’s your birthday this week
Time was when you were very content with second best, but you are inspired right now to make a clean breast of things and to take the bull by the horns. The Cosmos guides you into a year of astrological harmony and successful changes.

Technology: a bonus or a curse? THE ABILITIES of law enforcement agencies to quickly detect at the roadsides now whether or not a vehicle or a driver is legal means that the recent and believed bar-room talk that expats now resident in Spain do not have to worry about the laws is very quickly being proven to be incorrect. Now before I go further, there are some who think that I revel in advising such news. I decided to specialise in the motoring laws in Spain for us Brit expats in 2003 when after asking for information at an English book shop chain for such information, I was told that they get asked several times a week and no, they had nothing. As most of you must know now if you take an interest, The UK and Spain both have databases, namely for the vehicles, drivers and insurances in force as well as MOT/ITVs - all available at the roadsides in the UK and Spain separately at this time with the police able to access quickly all the details on the DVLA and Trafico databases to check the legality of any motor vehicle they stop or see. The benefit is that stolen vehicles are easier to trace and stop. The disadvantage for those who are not legal is that you will be caught much more
easily. The UK Press has reported that more than one million vehicles are in use in the UK without insurance, banned-from-driving owners or without paid up taxes: even if the vehicle is on a SORN (a Stipulated Off Road Note) this means it is not allowed on any public roads at all within the EU. The UK police must be very busy. Here in Spain, with the many UK vehicles that do not have the UK Road Fund tax paid and the correct receipt in the windscreen, this is a good enough reason to stop the vehicle and carry out a full check. I also see occasionally offers in the English language papers for such receipts, for a price: obviously a scam. The other problem that owners here may have is that as there have been no payments of the above to the DVLA etc. After one year without a legal SORN and these have to be renewed every
year, the DVLA automatically writes the vehicle off the database as ‘exported’ so the vehicle that many are driving around on foreign (UK) plates may not be registered anywhere. So if the owner wants to re-register the vehicle here at last, where did it come from? How does he/she get an export certificate? All additional stress - just for listening and believing the fellows in the bars… From next year it is planned that the procedure is to be changed for moving vehicles between EU countries so that each country receives the taxes that the vehicle incurs. But human beings sadly have a habit of thinking “It will never happen to me.” But from next year all EU countries will have easy access to the other countries’ vehicle, licence and insurance databases. So we are all warned with plenty of notice. Be careful out there.

Fantastic start for racing brothers
Anthony and Mat FordDunn kicked off their 2012 Spanish supermoto championship in style with two podium finishes at the Villena, Alicante circuit on Sunday. There was a large crowd at the Villena circuit to watch the action from the 1st round of the 2012 Spanish championship. Anthony finished in third position overall and was very happy with the result. Anthony’s older brother Mat was equally pleased with his race results. He races in the SM30 class for riders over 30 years old and finished in second overall for the days racing and on equal points for the championship lead in SM30. The Supermotoland team will next be racing at the Valencian championships on Sunday 3rd June at Oliva, near Denia.

Society handicaps
Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891
HARDLY A week goes by without me getting an email from a disgruntled golfer who plays practically all his or her golf with a golf society, expressing dissatisfaction with the handicapping system employed by the society. It seems that practically every one of our golf societies has a different way of calculation players’ handicaps. Memberships of golf societies change like the weather and practically just as often. For those who are concerned about the way handicaps are calculated there is only one way to ensure that things are done properly; make sure all members are also members of Real Federacion Española de Golf. This way you know for certain that any handicap adjustments are made in conjunction with the recognised system; here in Europe that means the method devised and administered by the European Golf Association. Many of our golf societies feel that they want to spread the prizes around as evenly as possible amongst their members. This is a very admirable view but it is not conducive to a competitive environment created to reward winners unfortunately. It is therefore important that before getting too involved with any particular golf society you find out the quirks they have in their handicapping system. In the event you don’t like the way calculations are made you then have to decide if you are going to put up with it or move on to a group who calculate handicaps in a way you consider fair. One interesting email from one of our readers last week told me that his
55
society only calculated handicaps every three months and were ruthless in the way they reduced handicaps of winners and those who played better than their handicaps. This system certainly is one of the worst you can come across as it means that only four times per year members handicaps are accurate. This is hardly a good way to run a happy golf society - particularly if you are the one who receives a massive reduction in handicap just before Captains Day or another major tournament day in the calendar. Handicap adjustments are always a very delicate subject for me to address and anyone who genuinely feels they want handicaps of all players to be accurate is to only join a society that uses the correct and approved methods of calculation of the EGA. WIN A ROUND OF GOLF FOR 2 INCLUDING BUGGY AT THE BEAUTIFUL EL PLANTIO RESORT IN ALICANTE Answer the question below correctly to have a chance to win. The winner of this fantastic prize will be picked at random at the end of each month. Send your entries by email to golf@roundtownnews.com. Hazeltine All answers must be received no later than 5pm on 31st May 2012 to be entered into March’s draw, to be made on 1st April. The winner will be announced in RTN on 8th June 2012.

The Ballantines Championship in South Korea last weekend is an event that many European Tour players look forward to every year. Certainly last weekend the players in contention were tested to the limit with punishing rough and extreme slopes on greens. In these circumstances scoring one would think would be difficult but the cream of European golf did not seem to read the script. Bernd Wiesberger took a commanding lead into the final round and his 68 on Sunday made sure he was not going to be caught. Wiesberger took his maiden European Tour victory at his 71st attempt and secured his future on tour for the next two years as a result and took a leap up to 95th in the World Rankings. On the other side of the Atlantic Luke Donald had the chance to go back to World
number one if he finished 7th or better. As we have become used to now with Donald he rose to the occasion and finished in third place. In the Tournament itself Jason Duffner beat Ernie Els in a playoff to take the Zurich Classic title for the first time. The Shanghai Masters was won last year by Rory McIllroy when the event was not sanctioned by any of the official Tours. In 2012 this event has been rebranded The BMW Masters and has the biggest winners’ cheque on the 2012 European Tour schedule. There is now absolutely no doubt that The European Tour has become a World Tour and provides their members with some of the best challenges and purses available in the game. Their move to include The Far East in their schedule a few years ago is turning out to be a master stroke. The Volvo matchplay in two weeks sees
some of the World’s top players refusing to turn up as the event does not fit into their schedule. This is a great pity as the format is the best on any tour for a matchplay event. Maybe the European Tour needs to schedule this event at a better time in the season to ensure it gets the support it deserves. Andy Kay Roy of the Rovers (and England) The Final Whistle IT’S BEEN a few days now since it was announced but I still don’t quite know how to take the news that Roy Hodgson is the new manager of England. I’m not particularly elated nor am I hugely disappointed. If you wanted to be harsh about it, England are a middle of the road team and they’ve got a middle of the road manager. Then again, quite a few players who’ve been coached by Hodgson over the years are full of praise for him saying he’s a good man-manager, a terrific motivator, technically excellent and always aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. It’s probably the current internationals who’ve not played in a Hodgson team who might find his appointment hard to accept, particularly those who ‘Tweeted’ so enthusiastically about Harry Redknapp when the Spurs boss looked to be in the box seat. For them, I imagine it’s a bit like applying for tickets

THIS WEEK’S competition was the 4th round of the Summer Championship, the venue being the Embalse de Argos. Although this is early in the season for Argos, it still did not fish particularly well, with only one good weight recorded. Barbel is showing up in the water but very temperamental. They seem to move in and out constantly as you can catch one or two, then nothing for quite some time. Let’s hope as the weather improves and the water temperature rises they may stay a little longer. Also this week was the long awaited return of one of our members, Pete Hampshire. His return went with a splash: he managed to take a dip up to his chest before the match started. The positive note was that he had all day to dry out! Nice one Pete. TOP RODS ON THE DAY 1st Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the pole using hemp and tares with 28.84 kilos 2nd Ian (From the Darkside) Haughton fishing the feeder using corn with 13.18 kilos 3rd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the feeder using pellet with 13.06 kilos PLEASE NOTE The club has some vacancies at present: if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 96 672 9293 or 603 535 771. ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS Supplied by Terry Screen The 6th round of the Spring Series was fished on the 24th April on the River Segura at Murcia. for the Men’s 100m final at the London Olympics and ending up with passes for the Group D volleyball clash between China and Kazakhstan. Of course, at the end of the day (as they tend to say in footballing circles) it’s all going to be about results. If Hodgson is a winning England manager, it’ll be one of the best appointments of all time. If Euro 2012 goes badly, the knives will be out very quicker than you can say “England’s Andy Roxburgh.”
is more satisfaction in winning cup competitions than finishing fifth or sixth in the Premier League. And he’s right. Trouble is, a team like Liverpool should be challenging for a Champions League place as well as doing well in the domestic knockout competitions. Mind you, having dropped 30 points at Anfield this season you can understand why Dalglish would want to divert attention away from their mediocre league position which falls way below the requirements of owner John Henry. FROM POTTING TO POTTERING Some sports stars (and even some sports commentators) go on for far too

Catch rates have now improved with good double figure weights now needed to win. The point on the Crystal Bridge area still seems to be the place to draw, with Dave Hutchinson making the best of it. The best bait at the moment seems to be paste and pellet 1st Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson with 34.300kg fishing the pole using paste and pellet 2nd Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell with 25.800kg fishing the pole using pellet 3rd Neil (The Boy) McBirnie with 23.820kg fishing the pole using pellet All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling. com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368. long. So Stephen Hendry is dead right to retire from professional snooker with his reputation intact. He may have lost his last match at the Crucible 13 – 2 to Stephen Maguire but his exploits at the World Championships in Sheffield will live long in the memory. A model professional, he won the world title on seven occasions and although never the most outgoing or gregarious of personalities, it was impossible not to admire his skill, dedication and sheer determination to win. His last match at the famous venue may have ended in disappointment but his maximum break of 147 on the first day of the tournament will be yet another happy memory to take away from his happiest hunting ground.
Giant killers Rojales show Madrid their heels
THE ROJALES Netball Club recently travelled to the La Manga Club Sports complex to compete in the annual International netball tournament. Teams from the United Kingdom, Marbella and Madrid all took part in the event which was full of great netball despite the heat of the day. From the first whistle of the first game against a set of elite players made up of players from Team Rock UK, Marbella and Madrid, Rojales threw down the gauntlet with fast exciting netball, using some of the new set plays that they have been practising during training. The final game saw Rojales take on the mighty Madrid, in what was a great end to the tournament. Rojales made every pass count and were determined to beat the team from the capital city. The attack play by Rojales was quick and practised and
FC Torrevieja news
LAST SUNDAY Torry played in a massive game against league leaders Catarroja with much at stake. Torry needed to win to keep alive their play-off for promotion hopes and Catarroja needed to win to stay at the top of the table. There was a good crowd and a very good atmosphere. The game was one of high intensity and was end-to-end stuff but the keepers were not tested too much. It looked like being a 0-0 draw until in the final minute Madrigal scored for the opposition with a header to break Torry’s hearts. Torry travel to Ribarroja on Sunday and the following Sunday play their last match of the season at home against Mislata. They need to win them both to finish the season on a high and just outside the play-off places.
the first half saw Rojales make some great moves in defence, with set plays and tight marking keeping Madrid from scoring. Madrid made some strong changes for the second half in a bid to close down Rojales and reduce the lead and came back with two early goals. But in the end the excellent team work from Rojales proved too much for Madrid and match ended with the final score of 9-2 to Rojales. Louise from the club told RTN: “It was a great day’s netball by all the ladies from Rojales Netball Club.” The netball club is always looking for ladies to join their team and welcome any new ladies. They train on a Tuesday from 7pm-8.30pm on the courts behind the Norwegian School in Quesada. For more information contact Tracey on 679 539 995 or email traceyburton@hotmail.co.uk.
