THE COMMUNITY centre in Blue Lagoon has been completed for more than a year and yet apart from one or two groups using it for meetings, it is sitting there idle. This week RTN met up with two local residents keen to get this community centre up and running and the great thing is that the San Miguel Town Hall has given them the authority to get on with it and get the building used for what it was intended; a community centre for the benefit of everyone in the area, young and old. The building was constructed using Plan E money and it comes complete with toilets, petanca pistes and a bowling green. Unfortunately, due to the financial crisis and subsequent cuts to municipal budgets, the Town Hall cannot afford to kit out the centre and that is where the traditional British community spirit comes into play.

BOOKINGS Terry Watson and Michelle Mint are passionate about the centre and its potential. Michelle said: “We hold the keys for the centre and we would like to offer it to any groups and associations for free. The Town Hall has said that as long as the relevant paperwork is filled in, which I can help with, they will not charge for any groups wanting to use the centre.” Michelle added: “The Town Hall also pays for all the utilities and a cleaner comes twice a week.”

Plans for the centre include a much needed youth club for the young people in the area and as regular readers will be aware, RTN and Viva TV are currently involved in a joint project to promote youth activities, so this is something that both media companies will be getting behind wholeheartedly. Michelle told RTN: “We are currently in talks with a local karate teacher who is interested in running a youth club and this too has been approved by the Town Hall.” 3 Continued on page
