Costa Blanca looks forward to more Dutch tourism A MAJOR push is underway by the Costa Blanca Tourist Board to attract more tourism from Northern Europe during the offseason.

by Keith Nicol Over the past two weeks, the Costa Blanca has been represented in shows in both Holland and Finland with FITUR in Madrid also being a major target area. In Holland last week, Alicante’s Provincial Deputy for Tourism, Joaquín Albaladejo held meetings with operators including TUI and Thomas Cook at the Tourism Fair in Vakantiebeurs, Utrecht where he received the backing of the Spanish Ambassador in the Netherlands Acha Javier Vallaure.

Blanca was committed to strengthening the senior market segment in the Netherlands to boost the seasonally adjusted number of tourists visiting the province. He continued “Our expectations are very positive for 2013. We have established agreements with major tour operators like Thomas Cook and TUI to increase the presence and offers to senior tourists, those over 50, in the province in season, especially in and around Benidorm. The Costa Blanca is an ideal destination for the Dutch market because of our warm climate throughout the year and the variety of cultural, dining, beaches, countryside and attractive areas of interest to this senior market segment.”

PSOE accuse the PP of Cultural Propaganda AS IF our elected politicians have nothing better to do, the war of accusation and denial continues in Torrevieja; this time it’s all to do with entertainment and culture!

by Keith Nicol Last week PSOE Councillor Javier Manzanares accused the Cultural Department with having a bias towards PP friendly artists and events and lying about the closure of a museum! Thus, Torrevieja’s Councillor for Culture, Luis Maria Pizana felt forced to reply to the accusations. He said “Once again the local PSOE take advantage of every opportunity in making unsubstantiated claims in order to get an answer , to justify their existence in the city of Torrevieja, something that, 19 months after the municipal elections, they have not yet been able to achieve.

“If we understand politics as the activity of citizens involved in public affairs, we can determine that the activity of the Municipal Socialist Group in the current mandate is limited to excessive and disproportionate criticism, provocation and continued attempt to create tension with the only purpose of paralyzing the city life, without stopping to think for a single second about the interests of citizens. times the PP try to stay out of these confrontations, but there are times when it is unavoidable and we need to respond to the attack on the truth and reality of the daily management PP government team in the city of Torrevieja.”

In essence, because of a decision made to temporarily close the Ricardo Lafuente Museum Mr. Manzanares called Pizana a ‘liar’ because Manzanares refuses to believe that the decision was made after the Board of Directors of the Habaneras were informed prior. Pizana refuts the claim that he is lying to anyone and says “It’s not for me to say that Mr. Manzanares is lying, because it’s not my style to go through life blaming anyone or pointing fingers, but not for the first time, nor I fear what will be the last, the PSOE uses Habaneras, the Competition or the memory of Ricardo Lafuente as a political weapon. Sorry, but that’s not going to force me to respond!”

Pizana continued “Moreover, Mr. Manzanares says that the Cultural Program is an act of PP propaganda! This does not match reality. On one hand, I am pleased to indicate that Mr. Manzanares has stepped forward for the municipal group that invited him as their spokesman, by JoaquÌn Albaladejo. But I do not know if his words correspond to the thinking of other PSOE members on council. Hopefully, for the sake of Torrevieja, the local PSOE can drop this line of attack, if only for their own interest. This dangerous path that they have ventured into this mandate, in only seeking confrontation, tension and loss of representativeness with citizens, and ask him to add to, to be able to work for the good of Torrevieja and, thanks to which, should never forget, have the great honor of being councilors Torrevieja.”

AS IN my previous articles referring to the health provider that has been taken over by another company, this is still an ongoing situation, and it has come to my attention that despite my articles and monthly radio programme on Bay Radio, Sound Advice, many people are still not aware of the situation and perhaps many of you are now starting to discover that the GP you particularly like is no longer available to you, due to the takeover.

If you find yourself in this situation you can, even at this late stage, legally cancel with the company to which you have been transferred. Also, if your health provider changes, or if the doctor you choose to see is no longer with the company, you have the right to cancel your policy at any time.

An unacceptable problem is now occurring which is causing great concern to some of our clients to whom, at their request, we sent an official cancellation letter.

There has been an unbelievable response from the new company, which is to present the payment to the bank regardless, hoping for payment. This is actually happening, despite clients having both cancelled officially and given written instructions to their bank.

How the banks can do this without the client’s signature or permission beggars belief. Please continually check your bank account and watch for a direct debit going out to the new insurance company - this is especially important if you are paying monthly, as it could be an ongoing problem.

Luckily, you have 60 days to return the payment - you simply need to go to the bank and ask them to send the payment back, and they will credit your account immediately with the funds. If you fail to check that this has happened and 60 days have passed then you will automatically be classed as a client of the new

Valencia shows its commitment to Torrevieja courts

by Keith Nicol VALENCIA’S MINISTER of Government and Justice, Serafín Castellano,was in Torrevieja last week to visit the city’s courthouse and said that ”the Government will make every effort to fight for the judicial district of Torrevieja, to increase its size with two more courts.”

The specific needs of Torrevieja are for two courts that deal with those who have committed a first offense plus one for criminal justice.

Castellano was speaking after visiting the Palace of Justice in Torrevieja with the president of the High Court of Valencia (TSJCV), Pilar de la Oliva, the dean of the court of Torrevieja, Juana Lopez and Mayor Eduardo Dolon. This was part of a series of meetings and visits in keeping with the Justice area to allow them to see first hand, the needs and problems of the sector. Castellano

also stressed the importance of regular meetings, as well as ”direct contact” with the legal operators to perform a detailed review of all the needs of the sector and obtain a detailed “x-ray of justice” in order to improve the public justice service of the Region.

In this sense, Castellano claimed that only knowing the real needs of each legal practitioner ”can meet the goal of speeding up justice and to make it as accessible as possible for everyone.” In this regard, Castellano stressed that it is essential for the Government to build ”dialogue with judges and magistrates to find shared solutions” which will lead to judgements being able to be concluded in the shortest possible time.

The head of the Interior and Justice Departments said that during the meetings they discussed various issues with all parties insisting that it is necessary to act ”quicker, especially in criminal

cases to solve urgent problems.” Finally, Castellano described the trip as ”positive and productive” and reiterated the importance of maintaining” meetings between the Department and legal sectors periodically, in a normal and smooth manner, to improve justice in Valencia”.

Over the past number of years, there have been many complaints about the time factors involved in non criminal court cases, such as real estate transactions. Some cases have been reported as taking over four years to come to court.

This has been a major advantage to the more powerful parties in such disputes, who have been known to use the slowness of the courts, to their advantage.

Some cases have allow them one to four years additional time to keep trading, or hope the other party drops the case, as an appeal over a Judge’s finding can take another three to four years, on occasion, to return to court.

Spain faces pension crisis

by Jack Troughton SPAIN HAS used its Social Security Reserve Fund to buy government bonds raising fears that it may not be able to guarantee future pension payments.

According to the Wall Street Journal the fund – “the country’s richest piggy bank” – has become a buyer of last resort but the cash will soon be exhausted. The respected newspaper said the borrowing spree had been “scarcely noticed” but alleged at least 90% of the 65 billion euro fund has been invested in “increasingly risky” Spanish debt.

Financial analysts say that while the policy has attracted little public attention or controversy it has become a major concern as the fund is needed to guarantee future pension payments.

And they said Madrid would have one less resource to finance itself as Spain faces another year of recession and painful austerity measures.

The market believes such a pressure could lead Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government to go cap in hand to Europe and request help from the EU’s bailout fund – a move the leadership is desperate to avoid.

They say the practice is sustainable as long as Spain can continue borrowing in financial markets, and they predict the economy will start to recover late in 2013, easing the debt crisis.

However, with unemployment now above 25% of the workforce and fewer wage earners paying in, the Social Security System is about €3 billion in deficit, according to government estimates.

The forecasts and data provided to us from the Spanish Tourist Office in The Hague testifies this.” Vakantiebeurs The international fair, ran through January 13 at the Royal Dutch Jaarbeurs Exhibition & Convention Centre in Utrecht and brought together more than 2,200 exhibiting companies specializing in the supply of tourism and leisure traffic with 60,000 professionals from 130 countries.

Nine kids injured after falling through the floor at school NINE SCHOOLCHILDREN at the Hispanidad College in Santa Pola were injured last Friday when the floor of their classroom collapsed, sending them into the basement with their desk and chairs on top of them. The children, aged between nine and ten, were part of a class of 19 fourth graders. The incident occurred at around 9.10am, just after the start of the school day. The ground nearest the windows suddenly gave way beneath the children’s feet and they plunged into a 35 square metre hole more than five feet deep, quickly enveloped by a choking cloud of dust. The school was immediately evacuated of its 180 students while the Guardia Civil and fire fighters rescued the children from the hole.

Seven of the children were transferred to hospital, some suffering with serious bruises and sprains, two transferred to Elche’s General Hospital.

Large cracks later appeared in three adjoining classrooms. The school is now closed pending further investigation.

Partido Popular’s new executive

by Keith Nicol IN WHAT amounts to a minor shake up and reorganisation of the inner circle of Torrevieja’s Partido Popular, a new executive is now in place to guide the party into the second half of their term of office. Last week in the headquarters of the Popular Party, an Executive Committee and Board of Directors was unanimously approved, which includes a new structure and new appointments, made by the president of the PP, Eduardo Dolon.

The biggest step in moving away from the past is that the new internal organisation features two new vice-secretaries, for Modernization and New Technologies plus Electoral Action. While the party has had to deal with a few uncomfortable moments over the past few months, primarily to do with the lack of control over mobile phone use, these issues have shown that Dolon is a man of action resulting in an influx of support and applications to become members of the party.

At last week’s meeting, the committee approved nearly fifty new membership cards from the previous month alone!

In this first Executive Committee of 2013, Eduardo Dolon, the local PP president, had his proposals approved for the appointment of Joaquín Albaladejo as the new

Secretary General of the Partido Popular and members of the Local Board. Dolon also announced the creation of five vicesecretariats who are: Department of Social Policy and Employment plus The Deputy Secretary for Social Policy and Employment - Tomás Ballester; Secretary of Organization - Carmen Gomez Candel; Department of Modernization and New Technologies - Federico Alarcón; Department of Local Politics - Agustina Esteve and Electoral Action Secretariat - Jose Rubio.

Almost another one hundred posts were confirmed during the meeting. Some of the other names that are well known to the International Community include Agustina Esteve as Deputy Secretary for Local Politics, Eduardo Gil Rebollo as Secretary of Team Coordination, Rosario Martinez Chazarra as Executive Secretary of Programs and Education plus Graham Knight as Executive Secretary of International Residents and former councillor for Foreigners and Chief of Police Pedro Valero who takes on the role of Executive Secretary for Electoral Training.

By Jack Troughton TOURIST CHIEFS maintain the industry is Spain’s lifeline with visitor numbers expected to grow during 2013.

Despite record unemployment figures and austerity measures demanded of Madrid by the European Union, the sector enjoyed a bumper year in 2012 – the third best year on record. Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism Jose Manual Soria said this week almost 58 million international tourists visited Spain last year, a 3% rise that 2011. He said previous records were set in 2007 when there were 59.2 million foreign tourists and in 2006 when 58.4 million came on holiday.

Mr Soria said: “2012 has been a very good year for tourism and the advanced forecasts indicate that in 2013 there will again be growth in visitor arrivals and spending.” And tourists continued to spend money. Last year the total expenditure of tourists in Spain was 55.7 million euros, itself up 5.9% up on 2011 with the average spending per person rising to 968€. The growth of the market saw the traditional holidaymakers arrive from the UK, Germany and France. The numbers of French tourists rose by 6.7%, Germans by 4.1% and just 0.6% of Brits – however, the Italian market fell by 4.2% The minister said the industry was strengthened by the growth of emerging markets with people coming to Spain from Russia, Brazil, China and India. Mr Soria said the ‘crown jewel’ of the holiday industry was still Spain’s “model of sun and sand” but new visitors were also keen to move inland to soak up the culture and culinary delights.

Mother faces two years in prison Protests against disability cuts ignored

by Jan Gamm The cuts include the elimination of technical aids and orthopaedic products for disabled patients of more than 18 years with a degree of disability greater than 65%. The measures also affect children under age 18 with disabilities of more than 33% previously exempt from the payment of such benefits.

These patients will now be subject to the same co-payment arrangement as everyone else. Those

most affected are families with a disabled child – the parents will be expected to pay between 40% and 50% on their child’s drugs according to their level of income. The cuts are being seen as a ‘huge blow’ for the disabled and it is expected that many will resort to abandoning their treatment when they find they are unable to meet the cost of medication.

A WOMAN facing two years in prison after being convicted of fraud in 2007 when she used a credit card she found in the street to buy food for her children has requested a pardon.

22-year-old Emilia Soria from Requena near Valencia had two broken relationships behind her and was left with two young children under five. She was in desperate circumstances with no job and no money but thought her luck had changed when she found a wallet in the street containing a credit card and ID card. Using the cards she spent 200€ on essentials such as food and diapers for her children, without considering the consequences. When Emilia was finally caught she was given a deferred prison sentence and a fine of 900€. She found work and for six years has been paying the fine in instalments but now is unable to keep up with the payment levels required in order to stay out of jail. Emilia is therefore required to begin a two year incarceration in two weeks’ time unless she can secure either a pardon or a stay of execution of sentence.

It costs too much to employ someone I HAVE said it many times... until the cost of social security is addressed in Spain the unemployment problem is not going to be resolved. It may go up some and it may go down some but the main issue here is the amount it costs to employ someone in this country. Once politicians waken up to this, take the blinkers off and reduce the costs for companies to employ people then the unemployment rate will start to improve on a more permanent basis. 40% of wage plus €40 to €50 euros per month for labour asesor to do returns per person.... I myself work more hours rather than employ someone as it just costs too much while others just pay in backhanders.

If it was easier and cheaper to employ someone I would do that.

Even when Spain was booming it had the largest unemployment of Europe, because it costs too much to employ someone.

The Town Hall at Playa Flamenca would like to say a very big thank you to all the neighbours and residents who kindly donated toys and gifts for needy children over the Christmas period. All the donated toys were given to children in the area so that every child this Christmas received a gift from the Three Kings. I am very pleased that everyone enjoyed the Cabalgata which was held for the third time in Orihuela Costa last Saturday evening. A lot of hard work goes into organizing such an event behind the scenes and you are always anxious if it will be received well by the neighbours.

A special word of thanks also to the management and staff of our new shopping centre La Zenia Boulevard for their co-operation and assistance. Being able to finish the parade there just put the icing on the cake as it was the pefect location in terms of safety and security to bring so many residents together with their children where they could wait to meet and hand their letters to the Three Kings which made the evening even more magical for the youngsters. Once again a very big thank you to everyone and to the neighbours of Orihuela Costa for making this an unforgettable evening!

Bob did nothing to help the coast I am sickened by Bob Houliston’s latest comments at the inauguration of a new rented room reported in this week’s papers. I joined CLARO in the early days when it stood for something good, now it stands chest deep in filth and corruption alongside the Orihuela PP thugs, corrupts and wasters. I used to be proud to be a member of this party but now I am ashamed to see what it has become.

I am so disappointed that after we elected him, Bob did nothing to help the coast; he quickly turned traitor and deserted his post. Every week he bombards us in the newspapers with negativity and excuses for his failure to perform. Like others, I joined this party out of disgust for the way that the PP neglected the coast. Bob is so infatuated with Monica Lorente, famous for her photo opportunity visits. The photo published showed only four people; Bob always overstates the numbers in attendance but over 100! In my five years as a member I never saw 100 members; in fact I don’t believe that

CLARO has 100 members.

As a former member, this photo says it all, Monica Lorente’s is laughing at how she tricked gullible Bob, even though she has been charged by the courts with corruption and rejected as president of her own PP, she’s mesmerized Bob and his dwindling band of admirers into believing that she supports them but she is using him and CLARO. She will suck them dry and then dump them. Is Bob s eyesight so dim that he cannot see that he is being used?

Monica Lorente is the human version of a Preying Mantis; Let me remind Bob how Louise Clarke R.I.P. worked and supported the canny Monica and in return she did not even go to her funeral.

If a person has a town hall problem, they would be best served to speak to an official at the town hall. It does not make sense for anybody to go to an upstairs room in a restaurant to speak to a powerless councillor who deserted his post a year ago.

June inauguration for the high speed AVE link Madrid to Alicante

by Jan Gamm JUNE IS the date set for the high speed (AVE) train service between Alicante and Madrid.

Alicante Provincial Council President Luisa Pastor announced this week that the Minister for Public Works Ana Pastor has confirmed that the inauguration date for the new AVE high speed rail link from Madrid to Alicante is set for June 2013.

The new high speed coastal service is seen

as a vital addition to the EU Mediterranean Corridor transport network that will provide a welcome injection of trade and tourism to businesses in important coastal resorts such as Benidorm, which would connect with Madrid in just two hours!

It is hoped that the inauguration of Renfe’s latest AVE service will take place prior to the popular Hogueras fiestas on 23rd June.

The project carries an investment of more than â‚Ź3.9 billion, adding ten more towns to the suburban rail network.

by Keith Nicol WITH THE New Year, local government on the Orihuela Costa faces a number of new challenges, not to mention continuing to work out the budget for the coast. While these budget discussions progress, life goes on and Deputy Mayor Pedro Mancebo and his team continue with their work on the Coast.

One important service that residents on the Orihuela Costa have recently lost is the Residencia Office in the Playa Flamenca Town Hall. Pedro Mancebo, Councillor for the Coast, is negotiating with the Policia Nacional regarding the recent closure of their office with the reason cited for the closure being due to staffing, or possibly a lack of money to pay staff to run this vital department!

Mancebo confirmed this is a very important service for the coastal residents and he will do everything possible to maintain this service and resolve the

problem. He concluded “Our residents come first and it is important that this service remains on the coast.”

Mancebo and his department recently contacted the coastal authorities in Alicante regarding the condition of the Paseo Maritimo leading from Aguamarina to Campoamor, which is in a state of disrepair. They requested permission to be allowed to renovate and carry out repairs to this very special walkway right next to the sea. Permission has now been received to repair and improve this attractive paseo and also improve accessibility. The renovation work should be finished by the start of the summer season.

Martina Scheurer, Councillor for Transport, said that she had received the annual statistics for the Torremendo – Entrenaranjos - Torrevieja Hospital Zenia Boulevard bus service. The statistics were very positive and the contract to continue running this bus service has

been confirmed for one further year. Martina Scheurer also said that she is having meetings with Bus Company Costa Azul towards improving the current “red and blue bus service” within Orihuela Costa.

Authorization has also been received for a number of new bus shelters, two of which have been awarded to the coast.

One of the new shelters will be situated on the main road near Las Filipinas. This shelter will have a dual purpose as this particular stop is also used by the school bus service. The second shelter will be installed in Playa Flamenca near Mercadona, to provide shelter and especially shade for the warmer summer months.

Scheurer added that the positioning of bus shelters on the coast is very difficult due to many pavements not being wide enough to allow for both the placement of the shelter and to allow foot traffic to safely pass by while allowing buses to stop safely and not to block traffic flow on the road.

By Keith Nicol THE GREEN PARTY, through its representative on the Municipal Institute of Culture “Joaquin Chapaprieta”, has submitted a proposal to the city of Torrevieja for a new school art program and exhibition. In the first instance they propose working closely with the City’s newest Secondary Institute, IES Mediterranean in Aguas Neuvas, to create an exhibition featuring the works of students from first and second year in the arts, for the current academic year 2012/2013.

The Green Party has picked this school for two main reasons: first they say there is an obvious interest in such an initiative and the educational community in particular.

They say that IES Mediterranean is the best place to start on the basis of the uniqueness of this school because they offer a Bachelor of Arts course in conjunction with the Orihuela School of Art and secondly because such an initiative would then be offered to successive generations of students to nurture the fields of art through young and old in the City. The proposal has been submitted and they hope that it will quickly achieve approval to allow this year’s students to work towards such an initiative.

Spiritualist Church Quesada is on the move!

OVER THE last few months the Spiritualist Church in Quesada has been looking for alternative premises due to an increase in rent and is now pleased to announce that it is on the move…!

Newly opened and re-furbished, the Dojo, just off Avenida las Naciones (5 minutes away from the Masonic Hall) has come to the rescue and welcomed the church with open arms. The first service will be on Sunday, 3rd February, and the congregation looks forward to welcoming old and new friends to the start of what will certainly be a happy new relationship with the Dojo.

Machines are taking over

I KNEW that one day the machines would take over but I’m surprised just how quickly it’s all happened.

It started years ago when my dad’s Austin Maestro used to tell him, “Fasten your seat belts now!” In a voice similar to the computer on Star Trek, i.e. strident female (that’s not me being sexist, ladies), the car would constantly tell dad to “ensure adequate levels of coolant are supplied (top your water up). It would shrill; “warning; oil levels are low” and, being a Leyland-produced-gas-guzzler forever tell him to “fill up at the nearest petrol station…” etc, etc.

And now to go along with bossy cars we have bossy in-car navigation. The dreaded sat or prat-nav that swears black is blue that you should turn right now – even when your own eyes tell you that you’ll be plunging into the sea if you do! The constant barracking by the bossy-little-bird-in-the-box is surely the cause of much un-necessary stress to drivers and passengers alike. I personally keep a map in the back and have learned the very un-male art of asking directions… But how long I’ll be able to resist the rise of the machines I’m not sure.

In an episode of the comedy sci-fi series Red Dwarf the machines even offered emotional advice. As Lister and Rimmer sit in the kitchen making toast, the toaster (while burning their toast – no they still haven’t managed to get that right) offers them counselling on their forlorn love-lives. Classic: a taste of things to come, no doubt. Although I half suspect that virtualcounselling is probably an up and coming App on your smart phone.

Smart phones, that’s another thing. Once we were blissfully happy just to have a phone that

we could use out and about - one that did not confine us to the wall of the kitchen or a urinesmelling red box on a street corner. Oh, how liberated we were with our mobile phones…

But it wasn’t enough, now it has to be a smart phone. One that contains your entire photo, music, games and feature film collection, along with personal details and contacts (I’m so glad I sold my Filofax shares all those years ago) and so much more.

And now to go along with smart phones we’ve got smart toothbrushes. Yup folks, you can now own a machine that will tell you where you’re going wrong on the dental hygiene front. Spend too long flicking the bristles over the central incisors and your tooth brush will tell you off. Cue toothy-brush: “Ere Watts, concentrate more strokes around your lateral incisors and pre-molars - oh and scrub your tongue while you’re at it; it’s a disgusting mess…”

The smart toothbrush will tell you how long to clean in each area, which brush-strokes are best and it will chart your progress awarding you points when you do well. What if you’re not doing well? What if one day you think, “Bah, this’ll do today?” Will it punish you? “Watts you haven’t cleaned properly today…” Zizz, a burst of elec-trickery to sting the offending hand or Zappp a little shock to the tongue, who knows?

One thing I do know and that is the machines are taking over.

In addition to the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles, the document includes a jointly agreed description of the manoeuvres carried out by the drivers when the accident took place, which plays a key role in determining who is responsible for a traffic accident.

HOW SHOULD IT BE COMPLETED? LĂ­nea Directa offers the following advice to complete the form: Columns A and B (blue and yellow), are for the personal details of the drivers and their vehicles.

In section 12, (Circumstances) the numbered column on the left describes the manoeuvres of car A and the one on the right those of car B. If you are unsure which box to mark, leave it blank. Make a drawing of the accident in section 13 indicating the manoeuvre of each car.

If anybody has been injured or if you think they might have been injured, complete section 24.

Spanish kids lead Europe in addiction to social network abuse

THE DIRECTOR of Protegeles (the Centre for Internet Security), Guillermo Canovas, has confirmed that 21.3% of adolescents in Spain are at risk of developing internet-dependent behaviour as a result of over-use of social networks.

An EU study reveals that 1.5% of adolescent Spaniards already suffer from this addiction which manifests in dysfunctional behaviour such as social withdrawal; loss of communication skills; sleep disorders; loss of appetite and loss of control over the time spent online. Spanish kids are by far the worst affected in Europe followed by Romania with a 16% risk and Poland with 12%. The problem has been aggravated with the introduction of smart phones that allow kids to ‘stay connected’ even when away from their computers. On the brighter side, Spain has fewer cases of ‘cyber-bullying’ with a rate of only 13% compared to Europe’s 22% average.

SPANISH TENOR Placido Domingo conducted the Orchestra of Valencia before a capacity audience in the Alicante Auditorium last Sunday. One of the world’s biggest opera stars, Domingo is also renowned for ‘changing direction’ and embracing other musical genres. The programme included works

by Wagner and Verdi and closed to thunderous applause, after which Domingo delighted the Auditorium with two encores.

MEMBERS OF the local Merchants Association in Benalúa, near the centre of Alicante, are drumming up business by selling fresh meat via a vending machine.

The machine also accepts pesetas, saving customers the trouble of exchanging them at the Bank of Spain.

The association president, Concha Ibanez, says: “The initiative encourages sales, which is what matters in an economic downturn.” The machine dispenses chicken fillets, burgers, sausages and chops 24/7 with all products replenished every two days.

Torrevieja in a Carnival mood

by Keith Nicol EASTER COMES early this year and so Carnival around the world does so too. And if you can’t jet over to Rio to experience the ‘real thing’ in the Sambadrome, then don’t despair because Torrevieja has their own, slightly less ‘risky’ version happening in February. The festivities start tonight, Friday, 18 January and run through to 9 February 2013.

The events scheduled for Carnival 2013, start on January 18, with the presentation of the Carnival Queens in the Municipal Theatre at 9.30 pm. Entry is 5.00€ and tickets available in

the theatre’s box office. Tuesday-Friday, 11am-1.00pm or two hours before the show. On Tuesday, 22 January there is the Junior Carnival Ball in the Centro Municipal de Ocio (CMO) at 6 pm followed on Thursday by the Senior Carnival Ball; same time, same place but different age group!

Carnival starts to warm up with one of the most colourful and fun events held in the Municipal Theatre, fifth National Drag Queen Contest. It’s on Friday, 1 February at 10.00 pm with tickets just 5.00€. There are prizes to be one and the competition is fierce but very tongue in cheek, with 1,000€ for the first winner, 500€ for the second and 250 for third. It can be a long night but it’s lots of fun.

The first parade takes place on Sunday, 3 February at 4.00pm. The day time parade features all of the groups but

especially some of the older participants, such as The Rascals plus many young children, who do not take part in the night time event, as it’s after their bed time! Saying that, you will find lots of children and babes in arms at the night time parade too. The afternoon parade runs from María Asunción Square, through Ramón Gallud and up to Patricio Pérez. At the end of the parade, prizes will be handed over at the Municipal Theatre.

The main parade happens on Saturday, 8 February at 10.00pm. It’s runs in the opposite direction to the daytime event, thus starting from Patricio Pérez, along Ramón Gallud and finishing at María Asunción Square, beside J. Mullins Pub. Bring your cameras, videos, plastic bags to put sweets in, wrap up warm and have a great time at Carnival 2013.

by Jack Troughton SPAIN’S CONTRIBUTION to the annual Poppy Appeal rocketed to an “amazing” 171,376.88€ for 2012, it was revealed this week.

Despite the ongoing economic crisis, the total raised by the Royal British Legion District North was 28% up on 12 months earlier – itself 25% higher than the amount raised in 2010.

The Legion now spends £250,000 every day on veterans who can be as young as 18 and shows a commitment to those who have served their country but might need help in the future.

Speaking at the Legion’s annual conference in Alicante on Saturday, District Chairman Chris Wyatt praised the “unsung volunteers” who gave their time to

collect cash to support veteran servicemen and women and their families.

“I am amazed and truly overwhelmed at the response to the Poppy Appeal for 2012. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have contributed to the fantastic total of 171,376.88€ - making an increase of 28% over the money raised in 2011,” he said.

“Not just in terms of cash, but all those unsung volunteers who have given so freely of their time to go out to airports, shopping malls and bars throughout the year in order that the Royal British Legion in Spain can help out beneficiaries.”

as more than 80 guests, Legion members and friends gathered on Orihuela Coast.

The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums led a colourful procession of the standards of the branches of the Legion and those of other Armed Forces associations.

And District Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator Robin Hargrave underlined on Saturday how all the money raised was spent on the welfare of those who needed help.

“We must remember too, that every centime we receive is used towards the welfare of serving and ex-servicemen and women and their families who find themselves in great need,” he said.

Alcoy water features reopen after four years ALCOY CITY Council has begun its schedule to reopen public fountains and ponds following a four year precautionary closure for the prevention of Legionella.

The re-opening will take place within a strict budget and start with detailed inspections to assess cleaning and renovation requirements at individual sites.

The fountains were closed in 2002 due to an outbreak of Legionella, reopened in 2008 but had to be closed due a further outbreak in 2009.

Fine weather great for the winter cutback by

WHY NOW? The weather is great and is forecast to continue dry for a while.

You will have had a colourful Christmas garden with luck but the frequency of flowerings will have now slowed down or stopped except for winter flowering perennials such as euryops which will have been trimmed in the autumn to stimulate winter flowerings.

Most plants are dormant or at their lowest level of growth during January and February.

The sap is down in deciduous flowering and fruiting trees so cuts will therefore not bleed excessively.

Bulbs are showing so one can see where not to hoe or fork the soil safely.

WHY DO IT? As explained in Chapter 6.9 of ‘Your Garden in Spain – Planning Planting and Maintenance’

gardens of all sizes and complexities benefit tremendously from a major winter cut back and cleanup. The reasons for this are: To match the size and shape of plants shrubs and trees to match the size of the garden and stop them growing straggly To stimulate new flower buds for spring or early summer flowerings To clear the soil of rubbish and weeds and where appropriate and hoe or loosen the surface of the soil hand fork while one can get at the soil most easily with no leaves and less branching growth.

To clear and clean up unplanted areas of vegetable plots and then rotovate, or dig them over, before covering with compost and wellrotted manures which frosts can break down before spring plantings.

A law with more implications than we thought by

THERE ARE times when most of us have been tempted to act on impulse. For example, at the auction house when the hammer is about to go down or browsing in an estate agent’s window when the sun is shining. Most people would warn against this kind of spontaneous purchase. They may no longer need to.

You may already have heard about the cap on cash payments that has been introduced by the Spanish Government. Residents are no longer allowed to use cash to pay for items or services over €2,500 and nonresidents on amounts over €15,000 if they are purchasing from a business, shop or professional service provider.

Between private individuals there are no such restrictions.

You might have dispelled this new legislation as being of little immediate interest. There aren’t that many transactions that most of us make involving this kind of money. However, we have come across a couple of catches to the law that might mean its implications are much more far-reaching than originally thought.

1. It refers not only to the deposit part of a larger payment that you might choose to make on a house or car or larger item, but the cost of the item in total.

2. Even if you are paying the money to a private individual, as in the deposit for a second-hand property, the fact that this payment could then be handed over to an estate agent (considered as a professional) to cover sales commission means that you could be breaking the law.

So, if you were suddenly driven to put a deposit down on that house you’ve been eyeing up for a while, you could be in breach of the new legislation unless the deposit is paid through a bank transfer or with a credit card.

It all sounds a bit complicated so here are a couple of case studies as an example.

CASE STUDY 1 Mr and Mrs P are residents in Spain and want to buy a second hand car. They’ve found one for sale on the forecourt of a local garage (considered a business) and have agreed to pay the total cost in three instalments over three months. As each instalment is below the 2,500€ resident limit on cash transactions they believe they are within the new law to make each payment in cash.

Wrong – it is not each individual instalment that must be below the 2,500€ threshold, but the total cost of the car itself. The fact that the car is costing 7,000€ in total means no part cash payment is permitted.

CASE STUDY 2 Mrs A is visiting San Pedro on holiday. She sees a property, falls in love with it and wants to secure it with a deposit of 2,000€. As this is below the 15,000€ stipulated for non-residents and is to be paid to a private individual, she believes that she is operating within the law.

Wrong – the price of the property is 150,000€ in total and this is the defining amount which means that the deposit cannot be paid in cash. Although the deposit will be paid to the owner of the house, he is intending to pass it on to the estate agents to cover the commission fee. As such, it ultimately goes to a professional and once more means that the deposit cannot be made in cash.

As with many of the new laws which are being introduced, the complexity can be baffling and unfortunately, we might all need to ‘think again’ before making that purchase. The penalties for breaching this law are particularly severe, 25% of the cash payment in fines, which are enforceable on both parties up to five years after the cash transaction takes place.

British couple resident in Spain seeking a divorce

IS IT difficult to apply for a divorce? Is it better to get divorced in Spain or in the UK? Would Spanish Law apply or English Family Law? Dear Sirs, I want to get a divorce from my husband. We are British and we have lived in Spain for the last nine years. We have a house together, which was paid for mostly by me. So far we both have small jobs which we have not declared.

Could we get a divorce in Spain? Is it difficult? What should we do?

What are my rights?

You should be aware of the adoption and entry into force of the COUNCIL REGULATION (EU) No 1259/2010 of 20 December 2010, implementing enhanced cooperation in the area of the law applicable to divorce and legal separation, regarding the causes or reasons to get a divorce. It would apply in your case, and as long as you did not choose another law, for

the grounds of divorce the law of the country where you have common residency applies - in your case, Spain and Spanish law.

This is a good thing, as it means a simplification of the process with respect to English legislation, where the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 requires that one must prove to the court that the marriage is irretrievably broken, by the following grounds: adultery; unreasonable behaviour; separation of more than five years; two years separation with consent to the divorce, etc.

In your case, if you are both resident in Spain, as said, Spanish Law will apply, and getting divorced would be much easier, because as per Spanish Family Law there is no need to prove grounds or give any reason. It is enough simply

to be married more than three months in order to file for divorce, or start a divorce process.

However, for the economic and property consequences of the divorce (not for the grounds) the Common Nationality Law of the marriage would need to apply. This, in your case, would be the law of England and Wales. So, English Law will apply for determining the compensation, maintenance, alimony, child support and effects of the marriage and distribution of assets.

Therefore, you need detailed advice covering both Spanish law and the common nationality law, in order to know the possible options and legal situation.

At this point we must emphasise that what it is most important, before deciding to apply for divorce and take

that first step, even before deciding whether to divorce in Spain or in the UK, is to seek independent and proper legal advice.

Confusion is very common in divorces and separations involving interaction of laws from different countries.

Frequently, clients mix Spanish property law concepts with their national family law, believing that even if the house in Spain is registered only in the name of one spouse it belongs to both equally; or if someone put more money in the marriage the other cannot claim for compensation, etc.

Many such beliefs are not based on legal grounds, and each case needs a nuanced analysis. If you find yourself in this situation, we can help and advise you on your options and legal situation.

What is the price of happiness?

A RECENT study of more than 5,000 consumers across four continents has revealed that the amount of net annual income needed for people to feel happy is an imposing GBP 100,000 – 15 times the global average* for an individual’s income.

Overall, some 80% of those surveyed believe that earning this amount each year would make them feel really happy. This is according to the findings of the Wealth Sentiment Survey**, a study commissioned by the international investment company Skandia International, part of Old Mutual Wealth.

Generally, respondents from Europe feel that much less is required to keep them satisfied, with people in Germany reporting the most modest needs of all countries surveyed (GBP 53,000). The UK has the second highest price of happiness in Europe at GBP 83,000, behind Italy at GBP 109,000.

Confidence in Banks at an all time low A SURVEY conducted by Gallup at the end on 2012, showed a significant drop in EU residents confidence in the Banks. 66% of people living in the UK said they had no confidence in their banks and a staggering 81% of people living in Spain felt the same.

Is it any wonder when Banks have proved consistently over the last 5 years that the only thing they care about is their own profits and shoring up their balance sheet! The customer’s needs and wants barely get a mention and are the last thing on their minds.

Yet again we are reminded of the Banks’ greed in the press this week with the news that Goldman Sachs are trying to defer bonus payments until after April to enable highly paid bankers to benefit from the cut to income tax on 6th April.

Campaigners at the Robin Hood Tax campaign, who want a new tax on the financial sector, also urged the government to act. “The government should not stand idly by but must

act to ensure the richest sector in the UK pays its fair share to save services and create jobs,” a spokesman for the campaign said. “Goldman Sachs’s latest tax trick is lamentably true to form – fleecing the public purse to stuff the pockets of its bankers.”

Changes to tax regulations Over the past months you have probably seen articles in various newspapers explaining changes that are going to be introduced under new European regulations, which establish the obligation for residents in EU Countries, to declare to the Spanish Tax Authority all assets and bank accounts held outside of Spain under determined circumstances.

Whilst you may be alarmed, as this seems to be the tone in some publications, we should bear in mind that these are purely informative declarations, their objective being that the different National Tax Authorities will gain some control over the circulation of money within the EU, preventing tax fraud.

The tax year 2012 will be the first year that this information is to be declared. Once the Tax Administrator approves the form to be used, the information should be submitted to the tax authorities by the end of March 2013.

For British Citizens living in Spain who have their tax affairs in order, this new regulation should not be a cause for concern as it will not introduce any changes with respect to their current situation. It is purely informative, and for those who hold assets and/or

bank accounts with individual values of more than 50,000â‚Ź, you are making the Tax Administrator aware of any assets held as a resident in Spain.

On the other hand, for those British Citizens living in Spain and who continue to pay their taxes in the UK, it is time to seriously think about putting their tax affairs in order with the country in which they live.

More EU Countries are starting to take measures to allow information to be exchanged more effectively between the respective Tax Authorities. By paying your taxes according to what the law establishes, it will not only give you peace of mind but also allow you to receive the same tax benefits as Spanish nationals.

Finally, it is also important that when you begin to pay taxes in Spain, that at the same time you stop paying tax in the UK. Life tech Syntax error HI AUNTY, I’m having a problem with a message that keeps appearing on my screen constantly.

It says JavaScript application and underneath a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. It says at the side Error-syntax error. It is driving me nuts! I tried to uninstall Java but it keeps coming up ‘Do you want to allow Java to change the settings on your computer’. When I say no it just disappears and nothing happens.

I only use Firefox. Any advice?

Aunty says: Firstly, if you are using Firefox, then look in the add-ons for ‘socialfixer’ and disable or uninstall this - this may be the cause of the problem.

‘Socialfixer’ is an addon that is used ‘to make FB more fun and efficient’ - but many people have had problems with it. Uninstalling ‘socialfixer’ from Firefox stopped these messages appearing on other peoples’ PCs. If you are uninstalling Java, then you will need to allow it to make changes to your PC, otherwise it cannot uninstall it.

So if you say No, it will not do anything

as you have not allowed it to uninstall.

For example, there could be an ‘addin’ running in the back ground that has stopped working, or is cancelling functionality. Is this using Internet Explorer? If so, download and use another internet browser like Chrome or Firefox, and see if that allows you access to your emails.

Response: You replied quicker than I even hoped for, far less expected, and I really appreciate your help. I normally accessed my emails using Firefox but by going in through Internet Explorer I was again able to open them - so panic over. Thank you again – Mary.

HI AUNTY: I have transferred films to disc before quite successfully and the film plays great on my laptop with sound, but occasionally when I transfer a film to disc the sound disappears and I’m left with just the film and no sound.

I cannot see what I’m doing wrong - I always use ‘Windows DVD maker’.

Aunty says: The most likely cause of this issue is that you do not have all the correct ‘codecs’ (audio software) for the videos in question. Sometimes, although a player like VLC will play a video file fine, a Windows media player will not - as the Windows does not have the correct ‘codecs’.

Medieval Market in Orihuela

By Keith Nicol THE MEDIEVAL Market returns to Orihuela next month and Martina Scheurer, Orihuela’s Councillor for Transport, announced that transport to the event would once again be provided to enable coastal and Entrenaranjos residents to travel to Orihuela City to enjoy the Medieval Market which will take place there on February 1, 2 and 3, 2013. The schedule over the three days is for two buses per day, one morning and the other late afternoon to travel to and from Orihuela, which will allow everyone three hours to enjoy one of the largest medieval markets in Spain.

The bus timetable is the same for Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the first bus departing from Playa Flamenca’s Mercadona roundabout at 10.00am and returning from the drop off point in Orihuela at 2.00pm for the coast. The second bus leaves at 4.00pm and returns at 8.00pm, all from the same locations. The buses will also pick up/drop off at Morgen’s Bar and Entrenaranjos. The return ticket costs approximately (no set price was given as we go to press) 5.00€ from the coast and €3.20 from Entrenaranjos. Please note if you depart on the bus at 10:00am you must return on the bus departing Orihuela at 2:00pm.

Ask!

Many of us like to be independent, and we try never to ask for anything that we can sort out by ourselves.

Asking can seem like begging, and it goes against the grain to have to be seen to be so desperate as to rely on someone else. Asking makes us feel and seem needy and that takes away some of our conscious control and then it does seem that we shouldn’t have to ask for that which we need, and that it should be provided by our own means anyway.

However, there are ways of asking and they do not demean us or see us as begging. To ask, “Please could I have…..?” could therefore receive the simple reply,“No.” For those around us who need to guide us and those that should be mindful of our sensitive needs; there is a sincere need to know what we need to learn, where we need to make progress and just what is missing that we specifically need.

There are times when it wholly right for us to ask, as it is a positive indicator of our expression, it is not selfish in any way, and for sure we have tried to receive and connect and now, surely all that we really need a little help. No begging takes place and we have to promise to be as exact as we possibly can be, under the circumstances. Then we have to have the faith to get a reply, to feel a response and to tune into the appropriate energies that will allow us to receive, and work with our finely tuned wants and needs; and to make a positive difference with them.

should get what it is I need. Or I don’t deserve it! Spirit has a habit of holding back sometimes when what I have asked for is out of the range of the blueprint of my destiny. I have also asked for too little and that has been very subtly brought back to my attention and over ruled by Spirit. Whatever, the process works, and yes, you can ask for anything and everything and yet you may not get it, especially if there is something better planned for you. Your belief will help you because it re enforces all that you hold inside. Above all be honest, brutally honest, and if possible connect with your Spiritual Guide to back up your request. It is a request after all and never a demand, but the power put behind it will see you through. Ask aloud if it feels good. Angels love to see the odd candle or two as the light is received in the Angel Kingdom and it illuminates the way for them to come to your assistance.

Asking is healthy process, and it brings just rewards especially if you feel blessed by the entire procedure.

No begging will ever be necessary and you can see the results for yourself.

If at first you feel that you don’t succeed then do not be afraid to try again and again. Tighten up the procedure and let Spirit know that you may very well repeat your wishes again and again. No threats here, but insistence can and will pay off. This brings about the natural rhythm of beneficiation and identifies you as somebody not to be messed with.

Asking knowing that you will at least be heard brings comfort and could bring all that your heart desires!

Most people do not believe in Spirit, but the numbers are growing steadily, and you know you are not alone. Concentrate on your own Spiritual journey and enjoy the results. If others cannot see your joy in your Spiritual energies then they quite clearly cannot see longer than their noses. Don’t give in………one day things may change but you have to remain true to yourself!

Torrevieja, Blanca de sal y Morena de soles ON JANUARY 25, 2013, Torrevieja celebrates the work of Pascual Muñoz, director and cameraman of the documentary ‘Torrevieja, Blanca de sal y Morena de soles’ (‘Torrevieja, white salt and brown soles’).

By Keith Nicol This short documentary shows at 9:30pm in the Cultural Centre ‘Virgen del Carmen’, organized by the City of Torrevieja in collaboration with Tourmaline Films. The evening is tribute to an author virtually unknown to the public, whose untimely death in a traffic accident in 1971 brought to an end a promising career.

Former mayor of Torrevieja, Vicente Garcia Pascual Muñoz commissioned this production from Leuka Films in 1968. The intention was to promote the City of Salt during the seventies.

It was shown in thousands of cinemas nationwide back in the days when Franco ruled over Spain and Torrevieja’s was but a sleepy fishing village with a population of less than 10,000!

Thanks to the efforts of Torrevieja’s Rotary Club, a 35mm reel was recovered from an old film tin that nobody knew the contents of. Until now, the film canister had been left in storage for over forty years until torrevejenses businessman Jose Andreu uncovered it when doing research for a calendar he was producing in 2011, to raise funds for the Torrevieja’s

soup kitchen! In late 2012, he commissioning the Torrevieja Rotary Club to research who owned the rights to this, and along with Turmalina Films, it was determined that it was owned by the city of Torrevieja as they had commissioned and paid for the production. The ‘lost’ film, in 35mm format copy was returned to Torrevieja’s Ayuntamiento, made into a digital version, and this is what will be shown to the public for the first time in more than 40 years in the Virgen del Carmen at the end of January.

After more investigations, it has now been certified that ‘Torrevieja, Blanca de sal y Morena de soles’ is the oldest film about the heritage of the city, that has been preserved and is now owned by all torrevejenses. The footage shot is of extraordinary quality, a fact for which the Council have paid tribute to this great cameraman Pascual Muñoz, his eye for style and visual criteria, all shot with a 35mm Arriflex camera, which accounts for the excellent quality of the production. Of major importance, in terms of film, is that before the seventies and the advent of portable and less expensive video, nobody

else had shown in film, how to capture the essence of Torrevieja in the late 60s.

On January 25, his documentary will be screened in his honour to remember the life and work of this great cameraman in the presence of his partner and friend, broadcaster Juan Vives Bravo and his sister Gloria Muñoz.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Step by Step Spanish - 15 AT THE end of last week’s article I left you with some short phrases which illustrated the use of Direct and Indirect Object pronouns.

Yes, I haven’t forgotten, we are still talking about them! Here they are again in case you missed them.

Me lo dio - he or she gave it to me Te lo mandaron - they sent it to you ¿nos lo dijiste? - Did you tell us (it)?

Os la pasé” - “I passed it to you. (“it” being something feminine) In each case the word order is in reverse of English – “to me it he gave” etc., which is probably the hardest thing of all about these little beasts. This means that when we are trying to translate one of these phrases back into English, the first thing we should do it look at the verb (in other words go to the end of the phrase) because this will tell you want the subject of the sentence is. The subject of “dio” is likely to be “he” or “she”, the subject of “mandaron” is going to be “they” etc.

Then you have to work backwards from there. This tip should help you to decipher otherwise incomprehensible phrases, although it doesn’t really help you to use them yourself – more of that later!

Notice that so far I have only used Indirect Object Pronouns which mean “to me, to you, to us”: in other words, first and second persons singular and plural.

Now we need to look at the third person forms: that is, meaning “to him, to her, to it, to them” as well as the formal “to you” when we are addressing “usted”. As we have seen, these are expressed by “le” “les” or “se”.

This can all get rather difficult to follow, so I think the best policy is to work with specific examples. First of all, here are two sentences which contain the indirect object pronouns “le” and “les”.

Le dije que no pasaba nada. - (“I told him” or “I said to him that it didn’t matter”). ¿Les importa si fumo? - (“Do you mind if I smoke?” or “Does it matter to you if I smoke?”) Les here refers to the plural you - “ustedes”.

Now, you will see that in these sentences “le” and “les” appear before the verb on their own. That is, they are not combined with any Direct Object Pronoun, as in our first examples.

This is because, when “le” and “les” fall in front of a Direct Object Pronoun, they change to “se”. Real examples are called for again. Let’s go back to the ones we already have: To say “he or she gave it to them” we do NOT say “le lo dio” but instead: “se lo dio”.

To say “they sent it to him” we do NOT say “le lo mandaron” but instead: “se lo mandaron” To say “Did you tell her?” we do NOT say ¿le lo dijiste?, but instead “¿se lo dijiste?”

To say “I passed it to them” we do not say “les la pasé” but instead “Se la pasé”.

Whatever you do, don’t ask why! Also whatever you do, don’t give in to the impression that you will never be able to use any of this.

The first step is to understand it - which usually takes a good while - and then the next step (in my opinion) is to learn some really useful examples parrot-fashion and just use them without worrying about the grammar at all.

I’ll sort some of those out for you for next week, along with one other important thing that should help and then we’ll move on to pastures new.

OUTLOOK • Hepatitis B and hepatitis C can become chronic. Hepatitis A never does...

• About one fifth of the patients with chronic hepatitis B and C are at risk of developing cirrhosis. There is also an increased risk of liver cancer.

• Cirrhosis can also be caused by other types

of chronic hepatitis.

• Acute infectious viral hepatitis usually resolves with without treatment.

• Acute infection is rarely life threatening.

• Acute hepatitis caused by medicines or alcohol usually improves once the liver is no longer exposed to these substances.

DIAGNOSIS Blood tests will help determine the cause and severity of the hepatitis. An ultrasound and/or other types of scan may be required.

In certain situations a liver biopsy may be recommended.

TREATMENT • No medical treatment is generally required for acute viral hepatitis.

• Chronic hepatitis B and C can be treated with antiviral agents • Autoimmune hepatitis can by treated with corticosteroids

Eye exam saved my sight

THANKS TO an early diagnosis of glaucoma by Specsavers Opticas in Javéa, Hillary Farrington has been able to treat the condition using simple eye drops and experienced no loss of vision.

Hillary Farrington has a family history of glaucoma and so knows how important it is to have regular eye tests.

However, when she went to a local optician near to her home in Javea, she wasn’t confident that she had received the optical health checks required, so she decided to get a second opinion.

“I visited a local optician for an eye test last year and was not satisfied with the tests they did. I had to ask them to do the pressure test to check for glaucoma, otherwise they would not have checked. After revealing my eye pressure was high, they sent me on my way with no other treatment. I

then saw an advert for Specsavers and realised the store was not far away so I decided to book an eye test there for a second opinion.”

Specsavers Opticas gave Hillary a very thorough eye test which included three different tests for glaucoma and concluded that she was suffering from early stages of this disease. They recommended that she go straight to the hospital to get treatment and gave her a letter explaining the diagnosis to take with her.

As the condition was caught early, she was able to treat the condition herself with eye drops and did not experience any vision loss which is associated with the disease. “I was delighted about the care I received from Specsavers, the eye examination was so thorough I knew I was in trusted hands. If I hadn’t of

gone to the store, I may not have been diagnosed at all and my vision could be severely impaired by now.”

Hillary’s story illustrates the importance of regular eye tests.

Glaucoma is very difficult for the sufferer to identify before the optic nerve is severely damaged. If left untreated, it can cause permanent tunnel vision which cannot be repaired, so prompt diagnosis is essential.

Life recipes

Salmon Fishcakes Most fishcakes I’ve ever eaten comprise loads of mashed potato and just a few flakes of fish.

This version is very different - firm, full of fish and not even a hint of potato.

The fishcakes take only a few minutes to prepare in a food processor

• 300g skinless salmon fillets • A chunk of day old crusty bread (a 3 inch piece of baguette would do nicely) • 1 tbls chopped chives • 1 tbls chopped fresh parsley • Half a small red pepper diced • A small piece of red chilli, chopped (optional) • Salt and pepper • Plain flour • Oil- use a flavourless oil such as sunflower 1. Whiz the bread in a food processor until you have fine crumbs.

Next, add the chives, parsley, red pepper and chilli and whiz some more until

everything is well blended. Finally, cut the salmon into chunks and add these to the processor with a little salt and pepper. Pulse the processor two or three times until the fish is well blended with the other ingredients. It is important not to over-process the mixture at this stage or you will end up with a soggy mush.

2. On a large plate, mix the flour with a little salt and pepper. Take a dessert spoonful of the salmon mixture and use your hands to form a small round patty about 1cm thick, then dip in the seasoned flour. Repeat until you have used up all the mixture (There should be enough for 8-10 fishcakes) 3. Heat a little oil in a large frying pan and fry the fishcakes for 4-5 minutes on each side until they are golden brown.

Serve hot with a crisp green salad, crusty bread and alioli.

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes

COSTA COOKING is a new series of fast, fun and easy recipes in a series of e-books promoting healthy eating by Canadian writer Karla Daracos.

By Jack Troughton The first volume of the cookbook ‘Super Cakes and Loaves’ is now available and the busy expat hopes to change the hearts, minds and eating habits of everyone hoping to improve their health.

Karla says the e-books are designed for people who care about their diet and nutrition and the end results were “100% guilt free and delicious!”

Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion’s new president

by Keith Nicol MR. TED Marsh was recently appointed President of the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion, the oldest Branch in Spain.

He was presented with his President’s Jewel (chain of office) by Lady Chairman, Mrs Gill Burdon. Mr Marsh joined the Air

Training Corps in 1950 at the age of 15 and at the age of 17½ he joined the Royal Air Force and served for 36 years in many countries from Norway to the Falklands.

He rose up the ranks to reach Warrant Office in 1978, enjoying a long and interesting career which including meeting many Royals and other VIPs. Before leaving the RAF

in 1988 he joined both the RAFA and The Royal British Legion.

Ted and his wife Margaret, who is also also ex-RAF, moved to Scarborough and bought a small hotel which they ran successfully for nine years. During this period he served on five committees, Local, Area and National.

After selling their hotel they moved to Los Montesinos in 2000 where he joined the local Royal British Legion Branch. From 2001 he held the posts of Membership Secretary, Chairman, Vice Chairman and has now been appointed President. He also became the Founder Chairman of the local branch of RAFA in March 2004.

A few younger ones may have a feeling for the era due to watching Hi-di-Hi on TV. This spring, 2013, the Campoverde Theatre Group are going to recreate those memories of what life on a holiday camp was really like with their new show ‘Di de Di’. Paying tribute to the holiday camp era of the 1950’s, the take on well-known

TV series Hi-de-Hi follows staff and campers during a typical week of holiday hilarity and mayhem.

Campoverde Theatre Group are now very busy rehearsing, flexing their vocal chords and practicing their dance steps. The show includes well-loved music hits of the late 1950’s and in keeping with the average age of the company’s members, focuses on the antics of mature holiday makers enjoying the ‘pensioner specials’. There are plenty of songs from the

era, which everyone will be encouraged to sing along with during the show.

Campoverde Theatre Group meets every Monday and Wednesday afternoon at the Community Centre in Blue Lagoon and also enjoys a range of social activities. New members are always welcome, everyone can contribute, not just budding or experienced actors, but also dancers, singers, artistic, creative, technical and backstage crew. On offer to all serious singers, the length and breadth of the Costas is the chance to sing in a major performance of the “Elijah”, by Mendelssohn. This famous piece is an oratorio written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1846 for the Birmingham Festival. It depicts various events in the life of the Biblical prophet Elijah, taken from the books 1 Kings and 2 Kings in the Old Testament.

Singers are invited to help prepare this monumental work by attending rehearsals on Thursday evenings between 7.15 and 9.30 pm in San Miguel for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Two of the Costa’s foremost choirs are combining for this performance, which could involve up to ninety singers. The augmented “Vivace” choir is looking forward to this new challenge of singing alongside the smaller chamber choir “Chorale” in this rarelyperformed choral masterpiece. Life events Operatic time with The Gilbert and Sullivan

By Keith Nicol ONE OF the missing links in the local musical theatre scene is the lack of an amateur operatic company on the Southern Costa Blanca. While thousands of societies are dotted all over the British Isles and many local performers have trod the boards and performed ‘book shows’ for fun rather than profit, strangely we don’t have one here. There have been exceptions of the occasional ‘one-off’, but popular shows such as Oklahoma, South Pacific, Sound of Music, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, How to Succeed in Business and many others, have never graced the stage locally. The exception to this rule is the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, who have performed such favourites as ‘Pirates of Penzance’, ‘The Mikado’ and many others. And it’s the newly reformed Gilbert and Sullivan Society who are considering the possibility of widening their repertoire to include modern musicals, light comic operettas and other musical shows.

Through the pages of the RTN, they’d like to do a little market research to see if there is interest and backing within the local community for them to broaden their horizons and also an audience who would

support and enjoy seeing these shows. They would be very pleased to hear from any of our readers who may wish to join them to be involved in this broader spectrum of musical theatre, whether performing or in some other capacity.

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society formed in 1995 and have been putting on full show productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas once a year at Casa de Cultura, in Guardamar. Unfortunately, a combination of both dwindling audiences and members forced the society to only put on a two-day concert of mainly G & S items plus a few songs from other shows. However the society are not planning on forgetting their roots and propose to put on another concert sometime in May 2013 but as is the case with all shows, they need performers for lead parts, chorus members, actors, dancers, those who ‘move well’ and helpers for both front and back stage because without some new members it would be a great shame if the society would be forced to disband.

Snag hits Cats

By Jack Troughton YOUNGSTERS OF Footlights Youth Theatre were in full makeup for the upcoming show ‘Cats’ despite facing a sticky problem.

Ian Underwood has spent six months making magnificent wigs for the show but 12 rolls of special double sided tape ordered online from the United States has failed to arrive.

Ian from Calpe is frantic. “We bought one roll to experiment with, which worked very well and then ordered 12 more rolls for the show. They are somewhere between Illinois and Calpe.”

Lauren Staton is leading the make-up team needed to get the 30-strong cast into character – she founded the face-painting company Snazaroo in 1984.

“I was so pleased to be asked by Footlights to design the faces and train the kids to construct them Cats has always been a favourite show of mine,” she said.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group contacted Snazaroo and asked the company to produce a make-up set to sell during performances of Cats.

“I remember watching their original make-up artist creating the faces for photographs using out face-paints,” said Lauren. “She was so impressed and even asked me if I was satisfied with what she

had done. At that moment I was so proud.”

Charity the European Kids Association has provided the make-up for the show.

There will be four performances in Calpe from 14th to 16th February including a Saturday matinee at 5.00pm. Tickets are 12.00€ and 8.00€ for children under 14.

Life showbiz goss David to take a bow-ee

Stagecraft is a word that’s generally used around actors when referring to the skills of movement around a stage that are needed to hold the attention of theatre goers. However, when you apply this word to David Bowie, born 66 years ago last Tuesday 8th, and find out that at the age of just nine David Robert Jones was described by his teachers at the music and movement classes as ‘strikingly imaginative’, ‘vividly artistic’ with ‘astonishing poise’, you get to feeling that a true star was born on that January day in 1947.

The wonderful news is that David has released his first single in 10 years, and if you are like me and have loved his music for the last four decades, the pop industry should surely be on mega red alert now that the great man is back!

The new single ‘Where Are We Now’ was recorded in New York and produced by long term friend and top record producer Tony Visconti, and with talk of live concerts in the offing, we have the potential for a master class in the business of being a true pop star.

Unfortunately, I have no comment to tell you about from El Bowie, but this is the mark of the man, throughout his career he has kept a low profile, constantly reinventing himself with the likes of Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke, so best put a shilling or three aside cause when news of his live shows pop up, you’re gonna need to be ready.

Don’t mess with the kid!

It’s been a while since I’ve brought Baby Boy Bieber to the page, mainly due to the daily updates on his on-off romance with Selena Gomez going gold on the tedium scale, but the wee laddie is back, and for a couple of seriously surprising reasons.

The first one is not good for a young man who’s riding a ‘squeaky clean’ ticket after he admitted to his legions of fans that, “Yes that was a blunt (joint) I was smoking, and I’m really sorry,” … and so on.

But he’s here for the second reason, as it was reported on top US gossip website TMZ last week that one of his former bodyguards Moshe Benabou is suing him for US$420,000 saying that Justin ‘beat him up’ over a wages dispute.

Baby Boy Bieber beat up a bodyguard? … Surely not! … ‘struck him repeatedly on the chest’ it said. Ladies and gentlemen I give you … Big Boy Bieber.

Big Hair! Big Shoulders! Big Show!

THE 80s was a decade that had so many wonderful things, like big shoulders, dodgy hairstyles, fantastic music and the not so good things like council tax and the yuppie culture. Also in the 80s we were all kept on the edge of our seats at home, bumski firmly on the sofa ten minutes ahead the titles music to those two glorious television soap operas: Dallas and Dynasty.

It was a bold move to bring back Dallas last year but the sad loss of Larry Hagman last November will make the future of the show a tad uncertain. But it’s to Dynasty I want to take you as when Stephanie Beacham appeared on Loose Women last week she hinted at the possibility the show might go back into production. Stephanie played Sable Colby (85 – 87) in the spin off series Colby, and also appeared in the 9th and final series of Dynasty in ‘89 where she played the same part and got involved in all those bitchy battles with Joan Collins’ character Alexis for the attentions of John Forsythe’s Blake Carrington.

“Joan and I have been talking

about it and we need a little bit of response and a little bit of encouragement … I can see Joan in one turret, Linda Evans in another, and me in another, and the youngies can do all the busy stuff and we’ll just plot and plan,” were Stephanie’s riveting words on the daytime TV show.

So, my luscious lovelies, why don’t you respond to the call from Stephanie and give her some encouragement, start a thread on the internet and bring back all those long lingering close-ups and all that spectacular drama when its ‘will she won’t she’ time, but the biggest reason of all for me is that it could well become the integral part of the Saturday evening viewing and kick the X Factory out the bleedin’ window.

Spanish driving testing

From 21st January, the theoretical number of questions that learner drivers can be asked on is increasing from 8,000 to 15,000.

There is much muttering from learner drivers who have much more work to do, as a selection of about 30 is made for students to answer before they can move to the practical training in a car with a registered instructor.

To ensure passing the theory, the learner driver really needs to be au fait with the answers to all the questions. Also during the first ten minutes of the actual practical test with

the examiner in the car, the student will now be told to just drive anywhere while the examiner watches. The student will then be given specific directions. But the student who fails will apparently now be told where he/she went wrong.

I started driving a car in 1956, a very much used 1934 Austin 7, when the Suez war was on and fuel rationing was quickly introduced. Learners with a Provisional licence (and petrol coupons restricted our mileage) did not need to have a qualified driver with them. My little Austin 7, bought for the princely sum of £5 in full running order, could then be driven as if I had a full licence - that is on my own or with passengers.

I guess we all had it easier then but the roads were very empty although even the main arterial roads were nothing like the autovias or motorways today. I survived though until I realised that when I was posted to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and needed to travel to London and back each weekend, a motorcycle was the answer especially as I was a frustrated fighter pilot (the reason I originally joined the RAF) who was refused aircrew as I am red/Green colour blind. So I rode all types of motorcycles: road; track and

off-road, for over 30 years, racing and riding machines that were as close to flying as possible. Happy Days! With my 75th birthday in February I have long since realised that falling off is no longer an option.

But for those who may complain that the driving test is getting more difficult, passing the test now is something to be proud of. You will know much more than the average experienced driver. I found when asking Spanish driving friends during my book research what a particular sign means that they are all painfully ignorant.

And the numbers of people dying and being seriously injured on Spain’s roads has decreased significantly in the last ten years so Trafico must be doing something right. Now if only they could rid our roads of the criminals who drive drunk.

Nota Bien: Saw a driver, a tourist, a few days ago being fined for driving while wearing flip flop beach sandals. The fine is usually about 90€. That is reason good enough surely for all to know all the rules. You must wear safe footwear that cannot get trapped in the pedals.

What kind of vehicle does an ardent clubber or festival-goer drive?

Forget the stereotypical VW campers of old that have all since broken down and rusted away: the new generation drive the super-cool and ultra-trendy Kia Soul, a far funkier proposition.

This is one of the few cars fitted with groovy mood lighting. When listening to your favourite tunes with the bass speakers thumping, green, yellow, purple and blue lighting surrounds the large door speakers in the front. This true club feel is best experienced when bopping to your best beats in the dead of night.

As its name suggests it is certainly distinctive and appealing. “Isn’t that a bit of a funky car for a dad of one with another on the way?” questions a young work colleague.

She might perhaps be right as the grey hairs start to take hold. But the Soul certainly gets its driver down with the kids, even if the stereo is turned down a bit these days for fear of going deaf.

The Inferno 1.6 CRDi five-door model urban cruiser is finished in eye-catching red with a black grille not far removed from the Skoda Fabia vRS. That’s where the similarity ends though. The emphasis on the Soul is

more street cool than speed demon. It craves attention and the red dragon emblazoned across its doors and bonnet like graffiti certainly makes heads turn. Driving a vehicle with such striking graphics is a first for me.

And its boxy styling is surprisingly attractive and different from anything else on the road.

It takes over from Chrysler’s retro PT Cruiser, which reigned supreme until it was withdrawn from production in 2010.

The digital reading during the test claims that the 1.6-litre diesel has returned just over 50mpg but it feels much less than this as the fuel gauge seems to be permanently dropping. It doesn’t seem to be as efficient as other similar sized units on the market.

But its six-speed gearbox is smooth providing an enjoyable drive while its high driving position gives a more commanding view of the road than a standard car. A centre armrest in the front would be useful for long journeys.

While its interior is practical and robust, there is plenty of black and so the mood lighting is a welcome addition, take a look at the video at testdrives.biz to see it in action. For me the seats are quite hard and

not as comfortable and supportive for my temperamental back as I would hope.

The Kia Soul is more about looking the part and standing out from the crowd than performance and efficiency but it’s a welcome alternative for the cool dad who likes to blast Boney M’s Daddy Cool from the speakers.

The January Sales The transfer window swung open once again a couple weeks ago but it’s been pretty boring so far. Swap Mario Balotelli for Edinson Cavani That should probably be the more-trouble-than-he’sworth Mario Balotelli plus a sack of cash for the lethal and technically superb Edinson Cavani. Given Balotelli’s form this season (the striker has scored just once in the Premier League) City would really need to twist Napoli’s arm to take the Italy international and part with Cavani, but Napoli have hinted at an interest in Balotelli, and City certainly have the funds to put a package together for Cavani if Sheikh Mansour so wishes. The Uruguayan has scored 23 goals in only 22 matches this season and City could kill two birds with one stone by shipping the Italian out and replacing him with a striker at the top of his game.

Wilfried Zaha to Man United You have to go all the way back to the transfer of Wayne Rooney in 2004 for the last time United snapped up English football’s quickest rising star but I think Fergie will end that wait this month. Both Arsenal and Spurs have expressed a keen interest in Zaha but, after missing out on Eden Hazard in the summer, United are thought to be leading the race for the young international’s signature. Although Crystal Palace apparently want Zaha to return on loan if he leaves this month, Sir Alex may have other plans. The ageing Ryan Giggs and inconsistent Nani need to be replaced and this kid is, in my opinion, ready to make the step up.

Willian To Spurs Shakhtar have been one of the most enjoyable teams to watch in the Champions League this year and Willian was a key influence in their progression from the group stage at Chelsea’s expense. The playmaker drifts effortlessly between the lines and popped up to score two goals in Shakhtar’s undeserved 3-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge. There’s been plenty of talk about Willian joining Chelsea in the past, but a move to Spurs would help to improve the competition at the top of the Premier League table and Andre Villas-Boas has hinted at the club’s interest. It’s highly unlikely the Brazilian would leave the Ukrainian Champions before their Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund,

but Spurs need a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor, who’ll miss a month while at the Africa Cup of Nations and hasn’t yet replicated last season’s form this term.

Isco To A Premier League Club Isco was a key player for Malaga last season as the Andalusian club qualified for the Champions League for the first time, and the 20-year-old has continued his impressive rise in the current campaign, despite Malaga’s troubles. The attacking midfielder, who can also play on the left, displays a maturity that belies his years and there’s been talk of a call-up to Vicente del Bosque’s forthcoming Spain squad for the friendly with Uruguay. The youngster won’t come cheap as he has a reported €20million release clause in his contract but, aside from Chelsea (who are already well-stocked with number 10s) any of the clubs in the top four, plus Arsenal, should be looking at a player of his wonderful talent.

Pep Oh, that Pep Guardiola is a bit of a tease isn’t he. He talks up the Premier League, gets us all tantalised and interested in his next appointment and then goes and takes a three year role as the next coach of Bayern Munich, one of the best run, best supported clubs in Germany.

don’t) that the Premier League isn‘t all it’s cracked up to be.

In truth, the only club that Guardiola was ever likely to consider in England was Chelsea but even the millions of Roman Abramovich weren’t enough to tempt the former Barcelona boss. And with good reason. Chelsea have been through eight managers since the Russian took charge in 2003 and it is reported that the owners henchmen often try and interfere in team selection.

Why on earth would

Guardiola want to put himself through that?

Instead, he’s gone for Bayern, a club with a very sound financial base, a fantastically impressive stadium and a stunning training ground in deepest Bavaria. But most of all, a club where the coach always has the last word.

Frankie Not being a fan of reality television I was a little taken a back to find out that the former champion jockey Frankie Dettori is currently appearing on the current version of Celebrity Big Brother. How sad that the diminutive Italian has gone from riding thoroughbred horses to flogging dead ones! On another note, surely it’s only a matter of time before Channel 5 falls foul of the Trade Descriptions Act. Celebrity Big Brother? Really? I would suggest that a far better title would be ‘Two people I’ve heard of plus a bunch of Z-listers, nobodies, never-wozzes and has-beens’. That would seem to sum it up much better.

Harry Say what you like about Harry Redknapp but as well as being a very decent coach, he’s

a master of the transfer window. His Queens Park Rangers team may be bottom of the Premier League, but already Redknapp has snatched French international Loic Remy from under the noses of Newcastle, Yann M’Vila looks to be on his way from Rennes and West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie has handed in a transfer request such is his desire to move to Loftus Road. All will, I’m sure, have clauses in their contracts that will allow them to leave should Rangers go down, but as far as Redknapp goes, his expertise in this complicated market place has shone through yet again.

Paul The players wanted him as captain and so too, in the end, did the European Tour so congratulations must go to Europe’s 2014 Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. Occasional followers of the game might not know his name but he holed the winning putt in 2002, he’s been a vice-captain twice and he has the respect of all the combatants including the prodigiously talented Rory McIlroy. He’s a great man for the job and I, for one, expect him to deliver at Gleneagles next summer.

FC Torry news Last Sunday Torry played at home against CD Acero, a side which was 4 places below Torry.

Ominously they were unbeaten in their last 4 games. Torrys threadbare squad was down to the “bare bones” with the injured Abel and Dani having to take up places on the bench. Torry were well beaten by a, well balanced, harder working side who coped better with the poor playing surface at the Vicente Garcia . They had a centre-forward with pace and good movement and clinical finishing skills in Bielsa. He put Torry to the sword with 2 well taken goals. Torry didn’t create much except for having a strong penalty appeal for hand-ball turned down. Torry desparately need 3 or 4 new players to strengthen the team. On Sunday Torry make the short trip to Crevillente to play second bottom Crevillente in a 5.00 pm kick-off.

IN THE first part of January with many people looking forward optimistically to a new year, when perhaps we would see green fees reduce to provide value for money, some things have happened that are hard to believe.

As usual we have seen a few managerial changes at a number of the area’s golf clubs. Some of these changes are long overdue and some will undoubtedly be regretted long term. What has not changed sadly is the attitude of some who are responsible for running our golf clubs. In a move that can only be described as idiotic some golf courses have increased their green fee prices giving the excuse that “we always increase our prices in January.” Am I the stupid one here for not understanding their reasoning or am I not seeing something they are seeing?

The last time I looked Spain along with other

countries was in deep financial trouble with record levels of unemployment and heavily dependent upon the money that comes from the pockets of the foreigners who will either visit the country or live here for the climate we have enjoyed so far this winter. Those lucky enough to work here in Spain have taken a forced reduction in earnings and no matter what their nationality have less disposable income to spend on essentials let alone leisurerelated pursuits such as golf.

To rub salt into the wounds the same golf clubs have increased the cost of hiring a buggy for a round of golf by a small amount in what is blatant profiteering from those who are for whatever reason not fit enough to play golf without the use of such transport. Are these people responsible for these stupid decisions living on the same planet as the rest of us? One thing is certain - they are not living in the same world as you and I and will sooner or later have to face the fact that golf here in south eastern Spain is way overpriced and bears no resemblance to the value for money offered in other parts of the country or even other European countries. On the Costa del Sol for example there are a number of golf courses where unlimited golf can be played for just 45€ per month - less than some courses here are asking for eighteen

holes without the cost of hiring a buggy!

So the answer is once again that we regular golfers have to stand up and be counted and only support the clubs where they are offering reasonable green fees in an effort to get all the other courses to see common sense.

THE NEW RTN Golf League got off to a flying start at our new home course last Tuesday at Alicante Golf where our competitors enjoyed a golf course in great condition and greens that were as smooth and fast as any in the area. There were many puzzled looks as uphill putts failed to put the brakes on and continued to travel a good two metres past the hole to leave a nerve jangler coming back. All players, however, enjoyed the challenge of a great golf course and too the speed of the greens as a real treat that demanded great feel with the putter.

Some things never change and so it seems with our league players. In The Premier League new member Tim Richards took top spot with 41 points from Mick Vesey who returned 40 points, seemingly continuing the fine form he showed throughout last season.

The Championship League saw Steve May come in with 39 points to take top spot and Steve also won the 2’s competition, taking the full pot on his own by getting the only two of the day. Second place went to the ever reliable Bill Fantom with 38 points.

Competition continues every Tuesday at Alicante Golf where we are able to provide a highly competitive green fee price of just 40€ including buggy; an offer exclusive to RTN Golf Club members who are playing in our weekly competitions.
