THEIR LATEST weapon in the fight against speeding vehicles is a helicopter equipped with a military tracking style device to clock speeders. It’s taken six years of experimenting with Pegasus airborne radar, which has just been homologated in time to catch unwary drivers over Easter. Actually, technically the aircraft is not equipped with proper radar because they do not emit any electromagnetic radiation to calculate the speed of the cars. The system Pegasus is coupled to one of the 19 helicopters of the DGT for which the Spanish Metrology Centre has given its approval to this unique system in the world of speed detection methods. The major advantage of Pegasus is that it can track cars on roads without conventional radar guns,
especially on B roads plus it does so from a height of over 300 metres, meaning that it can operate outside the typical sight line of motorists using a speed detection system that modern detectors cannot pick up because as already mentioned, unlike conventional radars this does not use radio waves to calculate the speed of cars. The operator of the camera uses a joystick to simply point the camera at the vehicle and within nine seconds, it’s velocity is recorded. The camera has two goals; to capture the vehicle and a telephoto lens that records in HD, which also captures the license plate of the car, to allow the DGT to pursue any complaint. The calculation is performed using a system that includes laser range-finders making it completely undetectable to normal traffic. Continued on page 6
