Abandoned houses for the needy

SOME OF Torrevieja’s abandoned houses could soon be used for the temporary relocation of those evicted from their homes as part of Spain’s banking collapse and eviction orders being presented daily to families throughout the region and beyond. by Keith Nicol ON THURSDAY, the Social Work was progressing to recover one of Torrevieja’s many abandoned buildings, one in particular that has been empty for more than six years, to re-house families. The first such building is located on Caballero de Rodas at the corner with C/Almudena and has been renovated to re-house families through the PAH social network of ‘Torrevieja, Stop Evictions’. Yesterday, Thursday, PAH Torrevieja, STOP Evictions helped to return the right to housing to several families in the town of Torrevieja. PAH Torrevieja’s spokesperson said “It leaves us no choice. Banks and Government are still evicting families and ignoring the ILP, which proposes to stop evictions and go forward with a social rent policy”, which allows families to stay in their homes, while paying rent to the bank, rather than the mortgage, which they can no longer afford. “We can not allow people to sleep under a bridge while there are at least three and a half million empty homes, throughout Spain, which could be used for this purpose. This is a simple social function. In addition the owner is a bank that has been bailed out with public money!”

The Social Work of the PAH is a campaign of re-housing and recovery of the “right to housing that responds to a generalized state of emergency housing sustained by ‘artificial means’ by the banks and the government.” They are advocating the recovery of empty homes for social rent. They continued “The

situation is extreme in our city of Torrevieja, on the need for housing. Although the Government will continue providing coverage for the abuse of banking and speculation, we know that a solution is not in sight. People are not going to be thrown on the street! If they keep ignoring us, the PAH will continue

to exercise the right to self-governance housing with Social Work campaigns. PAH Torrevieja helps children, the elderly and anyone who needs it. These people cannot sustain this situation in which they are immersed and suffering, starving even. But ‘Yes’ we can and will help.”
