AFA Swimathon

AFA - ALZHEIMER’S Society held their first Torrevieja Swimathon recently. In bright sunshine, about 150 spectators turned out to support this event at Torrevieja’s new Municipal outdoor swimming pool. A raffle was held with the Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon drawing the winning tickets and presenting the prizes. He was accompanied by the Councillor for Sport, Luisma Pizana. AFA estimate that the proceeds from the entrance fee, sponsored events and the raffle will exceed 2,000€ with a further 800€ being donated by Barclays Bank through its Pensioners’ matched funding scheme.

SOCIAL NETWORKING on smart phones, computers, iPads and Androids seem to be all the range these days, so in order to not miss a trick, this year’s 59th International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony, to be held next week from 22nd to 28th July, aims to become one of the most technology developed so far. To achieve this, Eras de la Sal will for the first time offer a free WIFI service. This is intended to encourage interaction and real-time feedback through the media and the thousands of visitors attracted to the contest. Torrevieja’s Councillor for Culture and Tourism, who is also the The Deputy of the Habaneras, Luis María Pizana, invited the public visiting the Eras de la Sal to use social networks to showcase their impressions and upload their photos in real time, using the hashtag # habanerastorrevieja. He also noted that the official Facebook page for the event, which already has nearly 2,000 followers, will this year incorporate a photographic section where photographs will be uploaded daily. This

commitment to technology is in addition to the online broadcast sponsored by the Municipal Board of the Contest. This real-time broadcasting of picture and sound will take place thanks to an agreement being the Habanera and Television Board Torrevieja. Thus, the seven evenings of the event can be followed from anywhere in the world through webenabled link www. habaneras.org, leading to torreviejaip.tv site. Luis María Pizana, also reports that the Board has considered this webcasting a priority, supported by the large numbers of registered users in the previous editions. In 2012, about 12,000 users from more than 60 countries followed the contest live on torreviejaip.tv, reaching the highest figures during the awards and closing ceremonies. In this way, it generates a ‘virtual Eras de la Sal’, which reach thousands of viewers who enjoy the choral singing of Habanera from all corners of the planet. . This broadcast will be accessible free of charge and through the link that will be enabled in the web page of the Habaneras at www. habaneras.org Continued on page 6
