Parents, teachers, students and supporters demonstrate

Ciudad de Oviedo School to close

DESPITE PROTESTS and the backing of all local Torrevieja political parties, Valencia’s Department of Education has notified the Ciudad de Oviedo school and parents with children enrolled in this facility that they “can and should” start transferring their children to other schools in the city of Torrevieja, for the academic year 2014-2015, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the educational community

centre. This is to confirm to parents that they “cannot enrol their children in this school, which will be dismantled.”

Next Tuesday, the enrolment period opens for the relocation of the 266 children. The objective of the Ministry of Education is to meet the current vacancies in Torrevieja’s 13 educational centres without the implementation of the nine classrooms that are empty in the Acequión College, one sources said.

However, some of these centres may not have space available today, and not know themselves until the end of this academic

year. The decision will also increase the student to teacher ratio, resulting in more students per class, as approved by the Valencian Government. Because of the location of the ‘Ciudad de Oviedo’ the most natural move would be en mass to the newly reopened ‘Acequión College’, which is a possible solution. Parents and teachers, who have already staged several demonstrations, yesterday expressed their “total rejection” to close the Ciudad de Oviedo and announced that new protests will be held.

Beach kiosks up for tender

Tenders are open to supply services along Torrevieja’s busy seafront

by Keith Nicol FRANCISCO MORENO, Torrevieja’s Councillor for the Environment announced last week that the public tender process for the rental of seasonal kiosks along the city’s beach zones, is underway and has been published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP). Here, interested parties can find all of the contract documents and statement of technical requirements, you will needed to govern the public tender for the seasonal kiosks on the beaches of Torrevieja.

Moreno stated that the tender process is open until March 18th, 2014 to allow interested parties time to tender for this contest, allowing time for Easter opening. Moreno noted that interested parties may tender for a single installation of all 13 that are offered. Francisco Moreno explained that the specification introduces several important developments. The first is that the conces-

sion period is extended to four years and is extendible, according to the new possibilities introduced by the recent amendments to the Coastal Act. Second, the government team wants to introduce modernization and makeover demountable facilities, so have included an annex to the statement, in which a guidance guidelines propose that grantees must meet, seeking a homogenization of image of kiosks torrevejenses beaches. In other words, all 13 kiosks wil look the same.

Likewise, the Councillor of the Environment indicated that the minimum bid is of 2.300€ per kiosk. This amount is separate from the fee for the use of public domain Marítimo Terrestre (MTPD) the successful bidder will be required to pay annual charges to the Provincial Coastal Service of Alicante.

Finally, Francisco Moreno also said that the kiosks are temporary structures, which must be disassembled and removed from the Maritime Terrestrial Public Domain if required.

All a question of size!

A EUROTEST study has revealed that Spanish car parks are the smallest in Europe; poorly lit, short on disabled access and with woefully small car parking spaces that result in damage to wing mirrors and doors. The rest of Europe offers spaces that are an average 2.5m wide and 4.8m long whilst Spanish spaces could be 2.2m wide and 4.5m in length – a tight squeeze.

Access lanes are also unforgiving – borne out by the helter-skelter access lanes at Elche International Airport with its tell-tale black scrape marks on every pillar!

Cruise passenger numbers decline

by Keith Nicol THE PORT Alicante announced the worst passengers figures in the Mediterranean for the most cruise passengers lost in 2013 with a fall of 46.9%, which resulted in the loss of nearly 37,000 passengers. This was according to the statistics made public this week by the Department of Puertos del Estado, on the eve of the fair ‘Cruise Shipping Miami’, the most important fair for the cruise sector.

Passengers numbers fell from 78,825 in 2012 to a paltry 41,860 in 2013.

For many years, cruise ship professionals have seen through the lack of structure and facilities offered by the port of Alicante and in part, this has been a factor in the port’s poor performance. Malaga also suffered badly showing a decrease of 39%, but still well above Alicante in terms of passenger numbers with 397,095 arrivals. Meanwhile, Cartagena’s trade grew 60% to 134,225 cruise passengers despite receiving a lot of bad press due to shops, tourist attractions and services being closed during some cruise ship visists. Valencia lost only 1% of its traffic and closed with 473,000 passengers.

Alicante’s loss may prove a plus factor for other Mediterranean ports looking towards building a Cruise Ship pier. Local investment teams have long being looking at Torrevieja as a possible cruise ship destination. Torrevieja’s three marinas mean Torrevieja is now the port with the greatest number of moorings in the region of Valencia, and a cruise pier would be a natural progression.

Such is the growth of cruise shipping in

the Mediterranean that the Port of Castellón will host the 44th MedCruise General Assembly to be held 21-25th May 2014. MedCruise members will gather in Castellón to discuss the latest developments in the cruise sector, and plan together for the future. In line with the MedCruise tradition, they will also have the chance of Business to Business meetings, a unique opportunity to further strengthen their business prospects.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) also announced that they will be exclusively providing the official travel agent training programme at the Seatrade Med Cruise Convention taking place in Barcelona this September. Hundreds of travel agents from across Spain will be attending the tenth edition of Seatrade Med to participate in the bespoke training programme, aimed at both sales and customer service staff at travel agencies in the region.

With recent figures from the Port of Barcelona showing that 2.6 million passengers visited the port in 2013, with 835 cruise ship calls, this is an ideal time for travel agents in the

region to be involved in the training at Seatrade Med. While Alicante seems to have lost a sense of direction in being able to market the region successfully to the major cruise lines,

the cruise industry continues to be the fastest growing segment of the travel industry and the opportunity to provide a successful cruise ship port experience is there for the asking.

European Commissioner back pedals on Ceuta THE EUROPEAN Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmström, has denied accusing the Guardia Civil of being indirectly responsible for the deaths of 15 African immigrants who died in Ceuta in February. Speaking at a press conference in Brussels on Monday, Malmström said: “I have not accused anyone regarding the tragic deaths of these immigrants,” adding, “I commented that NGOs and survivors linked the use of rubber bullets with the panic felt by the immigrants.” On the subject of opening infringement proceedings against Spain following the events of Ceuta, the Commissioner stressed that “…this possibility has never been raised.” The Commissioner’s remarks were made after a meeting with Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz where the agenda included a “frank and constructive exchange of views.” She also confirmed that she had received a letter from the Spanish minister requesting urgent EU funding of €45 million to finance projects to combat illegal immigration.

American Universities look to Spain

Antidepressants to be restricted

by Keith Nicol LAST WEEK representatives from 300 United Stats Universities took the opportunity to visit Torrevieja as part of a fact finding mission to expand their course offerings. Their visit was part of the Annual Congress of APUNE (North American Association of University Programs in Spain), held at the University Miguel Hernández of Elche (UMH) with whom Torrevieja has educational links.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by Councillors for Education and Youth, Rosario Martínez Chazarra, of the Environment and Urban Development, Francisco Moreno, and the president of the Real Club Nautico de Torrevieja (RCNT), Germán Soler met with a representation of 30 USA schools at Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja who collaborated in this annual event by inviting them to participate in their flagship project, ‘Nautical Sensations’.

Throughout the day the Americans enjoyed sailing, kayaking and yachting in the Bay with members of two local sailing club followed, since it is Rice Week, with a tasting session of one of the most typical dishes of the cuisine torrevejense: ‘arroz a banda’.

THE HEALTH Department is in the preparation stages of restricting treatment for depression. Spending cuts are to be applied across a range of prescribed antidepressants and antipsychotics as well as certain pain control drugs. The cuts will be piloted before being introduced throughout each region. GPs have already called for the suspension of the plan, so far without success.

Mayor Eduardo Dolon welcomed the visitors and thanked them for choosing to stay in Torrevieja. He explained the features and peculiarities of the city, its multicultural character, with almost 120 nationalities represented on the municipal census, the Natural Park of the Lagunas de La Mata and Tor-

revieja, its marine character and salt, and of course, Habaneras.

APUNE, founded in 1968, is a cultural nonprofit organization that provides information and support for over eighty American university programs in Spain from institutions such as Boston College, CIEE, George Washington University, Georgetown University, IES, Middlebury College, New York University and the University of California.

Fewer unemployed in February THE NUMBER of registered unemployed in the province of Alicante continued to fall in February compared with the previous month (0.04%) according to a report from the Ministry of Employment and Social Security on Tuesday. The February decline is the first since 2007, the ranks of unemployed men falling by 2,788. This was slightly offset by the number of unemployed women rising by 839. Unemployment in under 25’s fell by 380 workers. In January a total of 13,248 contracts were formalised, while 979,827 were other types of temporary c o n tracts.

Victim of wrongful imprisonment to sue judges

DAVID VILLAFANE has been in prison for more than 16 years, convicted of the murder of his girlfriend in 1995.

He has always protested that he is innocent of the charges against him.

However, forensic reports released in the last two years have revealed that the victim suffered with myocarditis leading to severe cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death. Villafane has now begun proceedings against the three Supreme Court judges who sentenced him to a 20-year prison term. During his incarceration he went on two hunger strikes that nearly killed him.

He has now declared that he will refuse a pardon and will not leave the prison without being declared innocent.

Torrevieja take control of Harbour area

Continued from front page The protests will start with a bus full of parents and students who will head to the gates of the Valencian Parliament, “to protest this closure and in defence of public education and the right to parents to choose to educate their children.”

Of particular concern is the nature of the set up of the school, which contains a high percentage of immigrants, The coordinator of the IU and Trustee in Courts, Marga Sanz, described the situation as “awful and without justification in closing this school. It must be remembered that 80% of students are immigrants and receive remedial education programs. That means that many are possibly doomed to dropout because they are located far from their neighbourhood and have difficulty in moving to another school.” The protests continue.

by Keith Nicol DUE TO Spanish heritage and laws, the Spanish Coastline is not controlled by the local municipality but by the autonomous region or sometimes Madrid.

Such is the case with Torrevieja’s Harbour zone, which until this week, they really did not have any power or say as to what went on within the sector.

Some of those have now been handed over and into the control of the municipality and this week Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon announced that the Government will imminently begin the transfer of use of the Harbourmaster building to City Hall, which is located inside the Port of Torrevieja, and to use this as a local police checkpoint in this central part of the city.

In the main auditorium of the Real Club Nautico de Torrevieja (RCNT) Eduardo Dolon and Valencia’s Councillor for Infrastructure, Planning and Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana, Isabel Bonig, signed an agreement of collaboration to allow the City Council, to utilise the harbour zone for public use. Thus the city of Torrevieja can now channel all requests concerning the holding of public events in the open spaces of the port.

Isabel Bonig pointed out that the agreement is an important tool to help advance the goal of the Government to allow the city to utilise more space for the enjoyment of citizens. The agreement also regulates the intervention of the local police, the supply of water and energy, firing fireworks in the harbour

as well as the public use of open space in the interior. The validity of this Cooperation Agreement will last for four years.

Dolon also announced details of the agreement that will see the Generalitat Valenciana proceed with the imminent transfer of use of the Harbour Master building, located inside the Port of Torrevieja. The building has two floors, almost 300 square meters per floor, which will become a local police office, which will host the ‘men in Black’ Group Operational Reinforcement (GRO) and the District Police, in addition to with administrative offices of the local police itself. Eduardo Dolon said that the commissioning of this police checkpoint in the centre of the city is to bring the administration closer to the citizen and especially as important as public safety service.

2014 Gold awards

by Keith Nicol ONE OF the new Tourism initiatives for the Costa Blanca is with travel gastronomy.

This week, Torrevieja’s Mayor Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Tourism, Luis María Pizana, the president of the Association of Hospitality Torrevieja and Region, José Antonio Lozano, and member from its Board of Directors, attended the presentation of Gold Medals 2014, granted by the association. Torrevieja’s Mayor congratulated the Association for the difficult task of successfully choosing the winners.

Eduardo Dolon also stressed the great potential of catering and gastronomy in Torrevieja, of which the city is a good example for other municipalities in our province.

In addition, Dolon predicted ‘great success’ for the new gastronomic days “Rice Torrevieja”, which is being held this week, thru Sunday 9th March. The new gastronomic experience features the participation of 27 local restaurants, which exemplify quality and good service at each and every one of the participating establishments.

Sheila beats Goliath

by Jack Troughton DETERMINDED SHEILA Skinner is celebrating a 190€ victory of ‘phone giant Movistar after battling for her rights as a consumer. She was caught “between a rock and a hard place” when she switched her mobile contract from competitor Orange but changed back again when she was promised a winning deal.

However, despite cancelling her new contract with Movistar she found she was fined and began the fight to get it back.

Her advice to anyone is: “Never give up.”

And Sheila, from Parcent, paid tribute to the offices of FROB and OMIC – the consumer protection group - in Benissa and the Servicio Territorial de Comerc i Consum in Alicante for their support.

She accused both companies of misinformation and Movistar of “particularly poor customer service”.

Sheila was in Ondara when she signed a contract with Movistar for her mobile but the same day when Orange “suddenly decided I was their favourite client” spent a day trying to cancel the new contract, hours later being told she was too late. When she returned to the office in person she was warned she faced the fine. When Sheila asked why this was not made clear previously, the “friendly” response was “I am not a lawyer.”

CONFIRM She returned to Parcent to send Movistar a fax confirming her cancellation. The next morning and despite her expressed wishes the phone company took her mobile over and she was cut off. It then took six weeks “of stress and aggravation” to sort out the transfer of her account back to Orange – and the loss of the 190€. Movistar denied receiving the fax – but having kept all the paperwork, Sheila launched her fight back.

“My Spanish helped but I am sure if someone has a strong enough complaint they will take someone with them – you cannot expect everyone to speak English,” she told RTN. “I worked in PR and marketing in my professional life and I think standards really need to improve and the only we will get that is by people not accepting low standards of customer service. We all have rights as clients.”

She said the 25 years she had lived in Spain she had been using Telefonica – now Movistar – for her landline and more recently her broadband.

She said when “bombarded” with calls to return to Orange it had seemed to be easier to keep her mobile account with them.

“I was promised it would not cost anything and literally impossible for them to take the number...but it all went pear-shaped.

SPANISH CUSTOMS officers between Melilla and the Moroccan town of Beni Ansar set off in pursuit of a male traveller dragging a suspiciously heavy suitcase on Sunday.

When the suitcase was opened a 19-year-old man from Mali was found inside! The Interior Ministry has confirmed that both men have been arrested.

A generous gift A BRITISH donor has contributed 80% of the total investment of 250,000€ to complete a new Metabolic Therapy Unit at the Hospital of Sant Joan in Barcelona.

The four-room unit will provide therapy for patients currently attending an outpatient clinic who are undergoing radiopharmaceutical treatment for

diseases such as thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidism and neuroblastoma. The unit will be operational 24/7. The Minister for Health said: “The new Unit for Metabolic Therapy will spare patients a number of trips to the hospital.” The donor contributed a generous 192,000€ with the remainder paid by the Department of Health.

Kidnap fear over runaway FEARS ARE growing for the safety of 25-year-old Francis Brennan who vanished on the Costa Blanca almost six weeks ago.

by Jack Troughton HE WAS last seen in Javea on 24th January when he was stopped in a friend’s car by several men posing as police officers and led away in handcuffs – Spanish police believe he was kidnapped.

Merseyside Police is supporting an investigation into his disappearance and speciallytrained family liaison officers are supporting his parents and girlfriend in the UK. Francis originally from Anfield, Liverpool, was convicted of an assault charge in the Thames Valley area in 2012 and was due to be sentenced in October last year – but against the advice of his family fled to Spain.

Last Friday parents Janet and Carl Brennan and his girlfriend of 18 months Sophie Staunton appealed for the public in Merseyside and to expats in Spain to share any information with the authorities.

Carl and Janet said: “We got a call from one of his friends and his girlfriend back in January to say Francis had been arrested but we later learnt from the Spanish authorities that this was not the case and he had been taken against his will.

SHOCK “This has come as an awful shock to us as Frances is our only son and we can still remember him as a fun-loving child who was football-mad in a football-mad family who loved nothing more than playing out with his friends.”

They admitted their son – a lifelong Everton supporter – had got into trouble as a teenager but became involved in crime after becoming unemployed at the age of 21.

Janet and Carl said they had pleaded with Francis not to flee the country but he would not listen. “He told us not to worry and he would be home by Christmas.”

“This whole thing has devastated all of us.

No one deserves this to happen to them and as time goes by we are worrying even more on a daily basis. Francis comes from a very loving and caring background and we all want him home safe and well,” they said.

“We are pleading with anyone out there who knows what has happened to please speak up – please come forward and share that information with the police or Crimestoppers so we can get our son back safe.”

TRAVEL They said Francis had started to “grow up” after meeting Sophie in 2012 – and she had travelled to Javea in December to try and get him to return to the UK without success.

Detective Superintendent Richie Carr said the situation was clearly a matter of great concern. “Francis’s disappearance is completely out of character and because of this, as well as his associations and lifestyle; ourselves and the Spanish police are extremely concerned for his safety.

“We do however, believe he has been taken against his will and we and his family are hopeful that someone in the criminal fraternity here in Merseyside has information that could bring about the safe return of Francis.”

Supt Carr said Francis was in a country that was not his own and his parents had visited Spain in a bid to try and find him.

“Only a parent will be able to understand what it would be like to fear your child is coming to some kind of harm.”

No trust...

IT IS no surprise that in a recent poll more than 90% of the people of Spain have no trust in politicians.

THE PP has given a permit for oil exploration off the coast of the Balearics and predictably environmentalists are up in arms. The PSOE mayor of Javea, no doubt at the insistence of his Alicante party, has mobilised all and sundry to make a ‘No’ protest.

This is anti-democratic - the ‘Yes’ camp has not been given an opportunity to make their case!

The real losers are Spain’s young people: unemployment in this group one of the highest in the developed world with no sign of improvement; surely a consideration for developing a new industry?

Instead the No campaigners quote ‘damage to tourism by oil exploration’ despite travel being a major cause of pollution. Tourism is important to Javea but are we saying to young people that the only future for them is as waiters, pool cleaners and chefs? Every month youngsters with a good education and a desire to work are thrown on the rubbish heap that characterises high unemployment.

The beauty of the coastline is irrelevant to them and their families as they leave the country in droves to find employment elsewhere.

The North Sea and Newfoundland remain major sources of fish despite oil exploration. The Spanish fishing industry is struggling through overfishing and bad practice: shipping and major use of leisure boats in places like the Balearics all contributed to the existing situation.

I am not against protecting the environment. Spain is one of the leading countries in Europe for protected nature reserves and development of renewable energy. However, I would like some balance politicians who make hard decisions and consider the future of their country and the youth who are the future - not pandering to minority groups and trade unions for support at the expense of so many others.

Norway and New Zealand: two of the most beautiful countries in the world - also the USA and the UK, all have gas exploration. Spain needs to overcome its economic problems having relied too heavily on tourism. Who will have the courage to stand up and support Spain instead of vested interests? I fear not the ‘big two’ in Spanish politics...

Spanish driving licence

FOR ANYONE who does not already know (as we did not) about when your current Spanish Driving Licence expires, we recently discovered to our dismay that our licences had expired a week previously and were surprised as in the past a letter from Trafico had always been our reminder. Not being too sure of the procedure without the usual letter we went to Centroclinico in C/Pedro Lorca in Torrevieja, who conduct driving licence medicals (armed as always in Spain with originals and copies of anything and everything that may be required). This proved unnecessary as all that is now needed is the current licence and your proof of Residencia. Centroclinico do everything – take the photo and send all the details required by internet to Trafico. Within two minutes we received our temporary licences and were advised the new ones would come in the post within a few weeks: fees are paid at the clinic.A note of warning advised by the Clinic - nowadays the reminder letter from Trafico may not materialise.

Compassion and care AFTER THE loss of my 90-year-old mother on 17th February I should like to take this opportunity to thank all the marvellous doctors and nurses at Torrevieja Hospital for their utmost compassion and care, which was beyond words.

CHINA’S ONE-CHILD policy was an economic disaster. The hazards of labour shortages and an aging population have emerged and China’s social-security system hasn’t been set up yet. The rest of the world’s regimes should take notice of this and learn how to improve on their own efforts in this regard.

Whatever the adverse economic consequences of such programmes, it will be a small price to pay compared with the long-term consequences of the progression of our civilization if overpopulation is allowed to escalate any further at its present rate.

Naturally, I was onto my credit card company - they would sort this out. They’d put a stop to this nonsense.

Well, erm, no actually AND unless I got through to this ‘completesave.com’ lot and cancelled whatever this thing I’d been duped into starting they may well be in their slippery rights to take more. Cough, what? Oh yes sayeth Lloyds: “When you give your card details to a retailer for a free trial or a payment for a regular service [trains, hotels, etc], you’re agreeing to set up a continuous authority.”

Continuous authority? Yup, folks that’s the terminology to watch out for. That’s what is causing trading standards officers their primary headaches these days. So what is continuous authority? Lloyds explained: “This allows the retailer [or sneak thief] to take payments from your account until they receive a cancellation request.” The thing that amazes me is that I’d never set up any authority and certainly didn’t set the ten quid payment price. Who set the value of £10? I never saw it on screen. Apparently, it can all be set deep in those pages of T&Cs that none of us ever check - and usually take purely on good faith. Especially, as we are booking with known and ‘trusted’ names like thetrainline.com. And as I mentioned last week other complaints have been raised by people booking at: Travel Lodge, Pizza Hut and even Argos.

I guess we’ll just have to plough through all of those terms and conditions from now on. Crickey, it’ll take hours to book anything won’t it? Well, it will; it’ll take as long as trying to get through to the likes of completesave.con, opps sorry com; you can spend the best part of your day listening to the phone ring

- they certainly don’t like to answer. And that’s if you can get their number in the first place. Luckily for me after last week I received an email from a disgruntled fellow ripoff-ee who told me: “There is a phone number for them 0800 369960 and I rang it. I spoke to a woman called Pauline Morris who behaved in a very defensive way and was all too quick to insist that I had signed up, even though she hadn’t even checked.” When asked to check the name Ms Morris said she had no information on it “she then started to suggest another member of my had family signed up without permission on my card.

“I said to her that I would be surprised if a representative of a legitimate business would be saying this. She was merely trying to justify taking unauthorised payments from me. The business has an address at Sentinel House, Airspeed Road, Portsmouth PO3 5RS. I have written to the police (NFIB) with the details I have on this.”

Good luck with that one.

Another email came from a lady called Amber. She said this “horrible company have charged us over £70 in the last few months, recently increasing payments from £10 to £11.25, without permission or au-

thorisation.” Amber asks, “Why would a company like thetrainline.com ally themselves with a company like this? It seems totally senseless.” Why indeed, Amber?

I sure won’t be using thetrainline.com anytime soon.

Amber added, “I have complained to thetrainline.com so we will see if they can keep their reputable image or if they are as bad as completesave.com - What con artists!!!” Oh dear, Amber have you ever tried to phone them? I wish you good luck too.

I guess the moral of this sorry tale must be, double check before you click.

Samaritans celebrate their first anniversary ON SATURDAY the Torrevieja Branch of the Samaritans celebrated their first anniversary with a celebration at their charity shop and drop in centre located on the ground floor of the Punta Marina Commercial Centre.

by Keith Nicol Hundreds of visitors stopped by to pick up a bargain, take part in the fun and games and raffle and be entertained by Nick Gold and team from Sunshine Radio.

Samaritans in Spain started in Calpe five years ago. A branch opened in Villamartin and relocated to Torrevieja last year, offering more space for sales and also a drop in centre, for those needing somewhere for personal, one on one or group support. Both the shop and drop in centre are open Monday through Saturday from 10am until 2pm.

The shop was officially opened by Ricky Valance: who can forget the 1960 number one UK hit single “Tell Laura I Love Her”, and has gone from strength to strength since then. The location gives a much higher profile to the Samaritans, which has meant a dramatic increase in callers and drop-ins.

To celebrate their first birthday, the centre had a fashion show showcasing clothes from the shop and modelled by their own volun-

teers. a cake stall, with all the cakes made by the volunteers; a craft stall, again everything made by the volunteers, including Cards, Knitting Jams, Pickles and anything and everything loosely described as crafts; a tombola stall, a book stall and a raffle. Entertainment was provided by Sunshine FM, UKeoholics: a Ukulele playing group plus singing groups The Dayamantes and The Velvettones.

Torrevieja’s Cinema Club gets closer to curtain up

Goldfinger celebrates 50th anniversary this year

by Keith Nicol WITH OSCAR night over for another year, things are quietly coming together for Torrevieja’s proposed English language cinema club. This week talks are underway with the Town Council about the legalities of becoming a registered association and with Cines IMF who are working with Spain’s film distributors.

Because we are in Spain and because of limitations on what films are allowed to be projected or are available, the management team at Cines IMF in Torrevieja have given their distributors an initial list of more than 200 films from which to start the cinema club.

As soon as replies are received from the cinema chain and the availability confirmed by the distributors, then the organising team will start to hold a couple of information days in Torrevieja, Playa Flamenca and La Marina, with other locations to be added.

The club hope to show a couple of new films each month, along with a mix of classics and those films celebrating a special anniversary or of particular significance. At present, we are planning on showing films on Thursday evenings with additional special offerings,

such as charity gala nights, film premiers, family and children’s films and theme nights, on occasional Tuesdays. A couple of films celebrating their 50th anniversaries this year include the Beatles and ‘Hard Days Night’, Sean Connery as 007 in ‘Goldfinger’ the third in the James Bond Franchise while both the epic ‘Gone with the Wind’ and the Judy Garland classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’ are both celebrating their 75th anniversary and probably not too many Torrevieja residents or visitors may remember ever seeing it in its full glory, on the big screen.

Also on the wish list are Oscar winners and nominations from 2012 through to films scheduled to be released this summer, 2014, which may be available for showing three months after their release date in Spain.

More than 200 people have expressed an interest in watching films in English without the need for headphones. The organisers wish to thank everyone for their suggestions as to what films, actors, genres, etc that you would like to see. All have been most helpful and they ask to please keep those suggestions coming. Clunk click for expectant mums ACCORDING TO studies in the US by the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) foetal mortality is seven times higher than infant mortality.

It is also estimated that in Spain up to 700 miscarriages occur every through traffic accidents involving pregnant drivers and passengers.

Expectant mothers are advised to secure their seatbelts in the correct way to avoid foetal injury in the event of impact. Misuses include passing the belt under the offside arm; slipping the lower belt under the bust; placing arms inside the belt to relieve pressure on the tummy to name a few. According to DGT recommendations the upper belt should pass over the shoulder and between the breasts and the lower belt under the tummy for maximum safety.

Rotary Club donates 4,000 breakfasts

by Keith Nicol ANTONIO SANCHEZ, the coordinator of Torrevieja’s food kitchen, Alimentos Solidarios, took delivery of products from the local Rotary Club, that will provide 4,000 breakfasts for the needy.

Sanchez met with the president of the Rotary Club of Torrevieja, Gemma Cruz, who arrived with goods that will provide for upwards of 4,000 breakfasts to alleviate the needs of about 150 children in the coming months. At the outset of this project, only 70 children in the munici-

pality were involved, however over the last few years of uncertainty and financial crisis, that number has doubled with the number of children who need this assistance increasing to the current 150.

The breakfasts that are delivered on a daily basis to these children consist of juice, a smoothie and a pastry. Gemma Cruz, wanted to publicly thank all those involved in making this donation possible. Alimentos Solidarios is currently providing meals to an average of 260 needy families and individuals, accounting for more than 500 people.

Written by local scribe Toni Soler, ‘Torrevieja and its colours’ has been translated into English

by RTN’s Spanish Language contributor Jane Cronin and deals with such topics as the seasons, Mediterranean influences and colours of the natural environment.

The original Spanish version of the same book was launched in November 2013 and Jane rose to the challenge and translated the paperback into English in just three months. The event was attended by Torrevieja’s Councillor for Citizenship Rosario Martínez Chazarra, the director of the OARI, Jean Paul Mulero, MASA Hotel’s hotel manager Javier plus volunteers from the AECC, Torrevieja’s vice president of the local board of the AECC, Alina Iurascu. Profits from the book are destined for the AECC. Over last weekend Toni set up shop at the Habaneras Commercial Centre and will be available at other outlets next week.

EHCRC on standby for mass rescue THE EHCRC in Rojales is currently working closely with animal welfare agencies to rescue 20 horses from what has been described as “a living hell” in Callosa de Segura.

by Keith Nicol THE NATIONAL Association for the Defence of Animals (ANDA) was alerted by British MEP Arlene McArthy, who contacted the Animal Welfare Intergroup of the European Parliament.

El Refugio del Burrito, a major donkey rescue organisation in Malaga, had already rescued nine donkeys from the premises, two euthanised on the spot, a third dying two days later. A spokesperson stated: “This is undoubtedly the largest rescue we have been involved in since beginning rescue operations in Spain.”

The premises in Callosa are owned by a dealer in horses, donkeys and mules. They are kept in appalling conditions, tied and locked up 24 hours a day with limited access to food and water: literally starving.

El Refugio del Burrito had already placed a criminal complaint against the owner.

Despite overwhelming evidence an Orihuela court found no wrong doing and ordered the case filed.

Allegedly in violation of Protection of Pets Law 4/1994, the dealer has been repeatedly denounced for abuse and illegal transportation of animals. Reports from Seprona and the Valencian Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries have called for the closure of the business. More recently

a specialist lawyer has prepared necessary paperwork now going through the courts.

A positive outcome is hoped for.

EHCRC co-founder Sue Weeding says: “We are in daily contact with Refugio del Burrito.

As soon as it is legal to move in and rescue these horses we will - with help from the relevant authorities and contacts providing extra horse boxes and assistance.

“The animals will be brought to the EHCRC to be examined by our vet Dorothea prior to necessary treatment to improve their state of health. This sorry saga shows that a lack of animal welfare awareness still exists in some sectors of Spanish society. There is still much work to be done but we must continue to educate the younger generation that this behaviour is unacceptable. Obviously the extra horses are going to place a huge strain on our resources financially and in terms of space availability but we cannot sit back and do nothing.”

Torrevieja Carnival finishes in style

Almost two thousand dancers took to the streets of Torrevieja

by Keith Nicol THE RAZZMATAZZ of Torreveja’s Carnival came to an end in the early hours of Sunday morning after the last of thirty-four troupes and countless people made it a party night to remember in the main Constitution Square, which was filled with music, humour and the joy of Carnival, into the early hours of the morning. Although a ten o’clock start was optimum, things seemed to run a little late but soon enough, a human flood of participants departed María Asunción Square, in a change from previous years, to travel along Calle Ramón Gallud, from end to end.

Along with almost two thousand participants, thousands more lined the streets with hundreds of them, and hundreds more among the children, also showing up in cos-

tume to enjoy the occasion to the full and add to the atmosphere. Many of the non-official ‘groups’ joined in at the end of the procession, adding to the fun and joy of the festivities.

Possibly because of the late start, once underway, the procession moved along at a steady pace, must faster and without any major hold ups, than the slower tempo of the previous Sunday’s afternoon parade. From end to end, including the addition of the large number of spectators, that showed up dressed for the occasion as priests and nuns, bandits and outlaws, witches, punks, animals and creatures of imagination, the parade took about two hours to pass. The music and dancing continued into the wee hours helped along by the bars organised by AFA Alzheimer’s Torrevieja, who benefited from the bar profits on the night.

Seniors celebrate Andalusia Day

The Municipal Leisure Centre, the popular ‘Macrodiscoteca’ or CMO, had more than a touch of an Andalusian flavour as Torrevieja’s Department of the Third Age organised a ‘Festival of Sevillanas’ to celebrate Andalusia Day. A Sevillanas Dance Competition opened the evening with the jury made up of councillors Lola Sanchez and Mamem Mateo, Salt Queen Saray Sanchez and her Lady in Waiting, Pepa López. They awarded first prize to a delighted and surprised pairing of Frida and Diego, with runners up being Rito and Lucia and Third Place going to Paco and Lin.

Singing the praises of fiscal residency

WHEN YOU use the word ‘certificate’ it usually conjures up images of celebration, graduation and prize givings…

SOME OF us have studied long and hard to amass a collection of these things, sometimes wondering what the point was after all!

When it comes to the residency certificate the usual images of pomp and circumstance are quickly replaced by that of queues and frustration. There are not many of us who have found the application for a Spanish residency certificate straight forward. And, at different times, it hasn’t resembled a certificate at all.

Now I’m going to further complicate matters by suggesting that your residency certificate is hardly worth the paper it’s written on, let alone a possession to be prized. It’s true that you need it for some activities in Spain. For example, obtaining a padron, your SIP card or a bus pass can’t be done (in most cases) without one. But this ‘certificate’

is of little use when it comes to actually proving residency.

If you look closely at yours, you can see why. If you have the A4 green certificate it is simply a historical document, no bar code, no image, nothing to ascertain that you really have been living in Spain since it was issued.

Given that expats aren’t eligible for DNI cards like Spanish nationals, what does constitute proof?

With even less pomp and circumstance we must introduce the ‘fiscal residency certificate’. This little known piece of paper is what you need if it comes to proving residency to reduce or eliminate inheritance tax. You also need it to prevent the 3% retention when you sell and possibly exempt you from paying Capital Gains Tax altogether.

If you’re wondering which building you will need to

wait in for hours to obtain one, don’t rush anywhere until you are sure that you have the evidence to show that you really are a fiscal resident. You will also need to make sure you are requesting the right type for the purpose you need it – there are two variations, one is valid in Spain and the other outside.

If you have been making regular tax declarations before June 30th each year then obtaining a fiscal residency certificate should be no trouble. This is one of the reasons that we recommend that all residents in Spain make one even if they have no tax to pay.

The fiscal residency certificate doesn’t come with a fanfare or a round of applause. However, it is a very useful document if you want to benefit from important tax advantages only available to residents. So perhaps it does deserve just a little public acclaim after all.

International House Swap CAN I exchange my property in Spain for a property in another country, and if so what are the tax implications in each country?

THIS TRANSACTION is known in Spain as a permuta and is becoming increasingly common due to the difficult housing market in the whole of Europe.

We will concentrate on explaining how this system works in both the UK and Spain; but this will be similar in other countries, France, Germany, Holland, etc.

There are many people who wish to move in either direction but are unable to do so as they cannot sell their house. I appreciate that it may not be straightforward finding a buyer in each country who wishes to proceed simultaneously on this basis, but the mechanism for doing so does exist.

Essentially the conveyancing process will run its course in the normal way in each country although the key is to make the two transactions interconnected, that is to say completion in the UK is dependent upon the deed being signed before a Notary in Spain. The standard searches

will be carried out in each case and once they are complete it will be possible to proceed to exchange of contracts in each country.

It goes without saying that an English solicitor will need to be involved as well as a Spanish lawyer. Well I would say that, wouldn’t I (!) but it is absolutely true that professional undertakings will need to be given between the two countries and the two legal systems have to interface seamlessly.

Regarding the taxes payable, each property will be treated separately and the purchase price agreed in each case. Where there is a difference between the price of the two properties this can be settled at time of completion, and one should ideally aim to agree a price for both properties in either euros or sterling from the outset in order to simplify matters. There is an inherent currency fluctuation risk although this can be minimized by ‘buying forward’ if desired.

Finally, the result of a house swap between countries is likely to be an appropriate time to

review one’s Wills. I have promised in the past not to refer to Wills in every article, but the issue is one of real importance here.

It is quite common that a person’s English Will makes totally different provisions to their Spanish Will because the assets in each country are so different.

The change of a person’s address alone does not mean that a new Will should be signed; but the change in the location of the person’s assets is the relevant factor here.

Donating your body to medical science in Spain MANY UK citizens now living in Spain have made the decision to donate their bodies to medical science, contacting a university such as Alicante to receive an acceptance document called an ‘Acta De Donación Del Cuerpo’.

The document is usually in Spanish and the recipient will then believe that when they pass away everything will be taken care of and there will be no cost or stress for their loved ones. Unfortunately that is not always the case.

Increasingly UK citizens are not being accepted when the inevitable event happens.

The reasons for non-acceptance are included in the terms and conditions on the document they receive once their donation has been accepted. The conditions are in Spanish and are generally as follows: 1. If the death happens out of the province of the university (e.g. Alicante) 2. In the case of accident or any other cause of death which makes a post-mortem examination necessary.

3. When death occurs after surgery and the wound has not yet healed.

4. In the case of death due to an infectious or contagious disease.

5. In those cases where the Professor of Anatomy judges that a correct conservation cannot be undertaken.

It is understandable that people living in Spain put plans in place for when life’s final event occurs. The system here is so much quicker than the UK, traditionally 24 hours, and very expensive. In addition the arrangements can be further complicated by language difficulties and the fact that the funeral is required to be paid in full, prior to going ahead.

Most people living in Spain, who make the decision to donate their body to medical science, have done so for the purest of

reasons. Saving their family and estate some money or to avoid distress at a difficult time for their loved ones. When one of the five reasons for not accepting the donated body are given, the cost and stress at a difficult time for friends and family will be enhanced considerably.

It is advisable for those that have donated their body to medical science to also have a funeral plan in place. They will then have ensured that their motive to be totally organised for their final journey will be fulfilled.

HMRC to seize hundreds of millions in new tax avoidance crackdown RECENT HEADLINES have indicated that HM Revenue & Customs could seize hundreds of millions from up to 65,000 individuals under plans to crack down on tax avoidance schemes.

THE MEASURE was announced in last year’s Autumn Statement and will be introduced in the 2014 Finance Bill. But in its consultation paper HMRC now says the draft power “does not go far enough.”

It wants payment notices to be extended to anyone who has used a tax avoidance scheme into which HMRC currently has an open inquiry. If proposals go ahead, it will publish a list of these schemes before the Finance Bill is given Royal Assent and begin issuing notices immediately afterwards. Notices must be paid within 90 days.

It says 85% of these cases took place more than four years ago. The rules will apply to both existing and new cases.

It appears this will be a game changer many of the enquiries have gone back six years, meaning there will be a lot of unexpected bills to be paid.

HMRC has stated that they are sending out a clear message: if you try to avoid paying the tax you owe they will pursue YOU. They feel that the vast majority of working people have paid their fair share of tax and it is not right that a small majority think they can avoid paying the same.

Polytunnels for vegetable productivity POLYTUNNELS FIRST appeared in the 1960’s once the plastics industry managed to produce reliable wide-width polythene sheeting. They continue to become more popular each gardening year in the UK and can also be useful in Spain, especially the large walk-in frame tunnels covered in plastic sheeting for growing a wide variety of crops from lettuces to tomatoes and raspberries.

The size is in theory whatever you like but typical sizes for gardens and allotment plots are widths of two to five metres and lengths of two to twenty metres. A minimum workable height at the centre of the tunnel is two to two and a half metres. There are two basic designs available to buy, semicircular arc and high tent shape. Well designed, constructed and maintained, they can last for years. The benefits are: Crops grow quicker earlier and possibly larger. The latter depending on your harvesting strategy – small is tender or giant could be a silver cup.

They are per square metre less expensive than glass or polycarbonate greenhouses.

A wide range of sizes are available.

They absorb the sun and achieve the most productive germination and Spring growing temperatures two to six weeks ahead of the open garden according to your location.

They protect growing plants from rain, frost, snow, hail and

gales and therefore enable more autumn, winter and early spring crops to be grown.

Using irrigation tubing that has drip holes built in close planting in rows can be achieved. If you split the growing area into zones, a multi-zone irrigation system will allow you to give blocks of small and large vegetables, soft fruits and tender fruit trees.

Exactly the water they need. Kits to allow liquid fertilizers to be metered into the irrigation water system are available.

What to look out for when buying a polytunnel: Strength and tear-ability of plastic sheeting cover.

Ultra violate resistance and quoted lifespan of the sheeting.

Quality of galvanised or protective painted metal framework.

Ease of construction.

Can the doors be sealed?

Possibility of fitting a temperature controlled fan so that you can use through the hottest months. You will be surprised how hot the inside of a polytunnel can become on a sunny day from June to August.

Can the sides be rolled up in the summer if you don’t want the cost of a fan?

Can shading and windbreak material be easily fitted?

Torrevieja’s boxing champ Emiliano Casal

by Keith Nicol EMILIANO CASAL is something of a hidden gem in Torrevieja’s ever growing list of sporting heroes. Presently Emiliano is Spanish Lightweight Champion (135 lbs – 61.237 kilos) and is preparing himself to defend his Championship Belt for the second time. Many local boxing fans may remember him fighting as an amateur and the historic night a decade ago when won in front of 1,300 people that set him on the road to a professional career. He became the first professional boxer to come from Torrevieja with his Pro-debut in Finland in 2005, which he won with a first round KO. Emiliano was born in Argentina and admits that he was a bit of a handful as a kid primarily because he possessed a genius level IQ. He became a disruptive element in class because he had so much energy to burn and class work he found easy, so he quickly became bored and a bit of a nightmare for all of his teachers. However, at age 12 he discovered boxing as an outlet for all his extra energy and said: “Boxing saved me from myself and gave my life focus.”

His mother’s family came from Spain and so they decided to move from Argentina and settled in Torrevieja in 1999, at which time he met boxing coach Ulf Johansen who has reSupport mained his coach to this day. In 2001 he was selected for the Spanish Spanish Olympic Team, turned pro in 2005 and won his first championship belt, as Transcontinental Light-welterweight Lightweight Champion weight Champion in 2009. Captain Kirk boldly went to the car park!

ONE OF the most fascinating parts of writing about famous people is when something quite extraordinary pops up about them. On Thursday September 8th 1966 the very first episode of Star Trek aired on NBC, and so was born a franchise that would go on to reach the dizzy heights of television and cinema superstardom.

All the characters grew to be household names and the things they said were things we said at school or in the workplace. Things like ‘Full Thrust Scottie’ from Captain James Tiberius Kirk (aka) William Shatner, or should that be the other way round… And it’s to William Shatner we go, or should that be Captain Kirk, as in an interview he gave last week he revealed a whole bunch of stuff that you, like me, might also find rather surprising.

It is clear from what he said that William Shatner was not very good at saving money as he revealed: “After the show finished I ended up living out of my car because I was so cash-strapped, a pickup truck actually. It was the early 1970s and I was recently divorced. I had three kids and was totally broke … I managed to find work but I couldn’t afford hotels, so I lived out of the back of my truck”… every word, as he said it…! But there’s more, a lot more. He went on: “It had a little stove, a toilet, and I’d drive from theater to theater ... the only comfort came from my dog who sat in the passenger seat.” Has that got you like it got me … remarkable stuff!

This bizarre circumstance was only temporary as you are probably aware as WS went on to star in several TV series, such as TJ Hooker, Boston Legal and many TV commercials.

Why didn’t he just flick open his wee gadget and say: “Beam me Up Scottie!”

Celebrity Clips IT’S BEEN a while since I’ve reported on the Ginger Prince, but sadly it’s not for anything outrageous he’s here today. It looks like the serial party prince is cashing in his chips and going for the ‘2.4 kids’ routine. He has even bowed to royal protocol by saying he’s going to ask his grandma’s (The Queen) permission. The girl’s name is Cressida Bonas, so hard lines all you aspiring Chavs.

I find it hard to comprehend the coverage the superhero market gets, with movie after movie portraying men in snug fitting outfits going about the business of saving the world.

Now a guy called Mitchell Hammond has come up with a cartoon version called ‘Batman versus The Terminator’ in which Batman plots to defend the innocent against crime and injustice, from a bomb shelter … make that a BatCave!

It’s common in the Latino music world for artists to be complimentary about another artist, but not so much in the rest of the music community. For me to read about top singer Adele posting on Twitter “F**k! This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen in my life hands down,” about Scottish born Paolo Nuttini’s performance of ‘Iron Sky’ suggests you should go to YouTube and check it out.

Ahead of the Oscars Judi Dench told the Hollywood Reporter that she suffers from macular degeneration - failing eyesight – admitting, “I can’t read anymore, I can’t paint like I used to, it’s quite difficult.”

Then in a flash she added: “I object to the words ‘retire’ and ‘vintage,’ and ‘old’ is another one ...” The lovely lady is a spritely 79 years young.

A touch of the Blarney returning to Cabo Roig IT’S THAT time of year again, when one wears green, thinks nothing of donning a silly hat with the saying ‘Kiss Me I’m Irish’ and generally make a loveable fool of oneself after one Guinness too many.

By Keith Nicol Yes; it’s time for that most popular of International festivals, St. Patrick’s Day, which is just, believe it or not, just 10 days away, on Monday week, 17th March, 2014.

This year marks their fourth and a number of special celebrities will be joining in the fun and the parades including local councillors and members of the local community, least we not forget; St. Patrick himself, who will lead of the parade accompanied by this year’s Parade Marshal.

So far over 30 different organizations are participating in the parade and many more have contacted various members of the committee to say they want to be involved.

Even if you don’t live or have a Business in Cabo Roig but want to get involved in this Annual fun filled colourful day then please contact Brendan on 663 295 066 or e.mail: caboroigtraders@gmail.com. Everyone is welcome to partake in this event.. So if you have a business or dance group, etc and would like to enter a float then get busy, get creative and get your name entered.. Cash prizes for best float are:1st. Prize 250€, 2nd Prize 150€, 3rd Prize 100€.

This year’s parade will again start with a large number of local Biker clubs followed by a selection of classic and specialist cars. They will perform two circuits of the rout before the main parade starts. Anyone wishing to enter this car in the parade should contact Ron on 622 381 242. The Torrevieja Pipe and Drum band will lead the parade itself.

MORE THAN 60 members and friends of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion were guests of Colonel Emilio Gracia Cirugeda last Thursday at the Academia General del Aire (AGA), and the Centro Universitario de la Defensa in San Javier.

The base facilities include a Language School; a Tactics and Weapons Systems Wing; Air Traffic Control and a Navigational Wings where those students who don’t quite achieve the standards required for Phase II pilot training are given the option of training for alternative Air Force careers.

Following the visit to the Academy members of the RBL retired to the excellent Los Caracoles Restaurant in Pilar de la Horadada where they wined and dined late into the afternoon.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Masculine and Feminine Part 2

THE IDEA of “gender” in the Spanish language is something most students have to come to terms with quite early on in their learning.

The idea that a chair can be “female” and a car “male” usually gives rise to a few jovial remarks, followed by general incomprehension as to why such female related objects as “bolso” (handbag) and “vestido” (dress) should be masculine, although for some reason no one ever worries that “camisa” (shirt) and “corbata” (tie) are feminine. There is possibly some strange psychological reason why we question some words and not others, but I have no idea what it is. In any case I always insist on making sure that people use the terms “masculine” and “feminine” rather than “male” and “female”, and also explain that this gender distinction belongs to the words themselves, and not what they represent. Sometimes I wish they were called “apples” and “pears” or “giraffes” and “elephants”, but at some point in the development of the language the distinction was made in terms of “masculine” and “feminine”, and whilst this is meaningful when applied to male and female people and animals, it is really arbitrary when referring to anything else.

Anyway, hopefully my present readers have overcome this initial difficulty. The next question that arises is whether there is any way of knowing whether a word is masculine or feminine. As usual the answer is not conclusive. There are certain characteristics which can indicate which gender a word is, but there are exceptions, and also many words that

give us no indication whatsoever. The best known indicator is the characteristic “o” ending for masculine and “a” ending for feminine words. There are some notable and very common exceptions, such as “la mano”, “la radio”, “el sofá” “el planeta” and so on. Then there are many words that have other endings which do not indicate gender in any way.

Here are just two examples out of thousands: “reloj” (clock) and “pared” (internal wall). You cannot tell by looking which one is which! In fact the word “reloj” is masculine – “el reloj” (the clock) and “pared” is feminine “la pared” (the wall). We just have to learn these differences gradually, and not worry about getting them all mixed up at first.

Having said that, there are some very common endings that are always feminine (I’m very wary of using the word “always”, but in this case I have never come across any exceptions). These are “– ción, -sión and –xión” (la estación, la televisión, la conexión), and also the “– dad” endings (la comunidad, la universidad, la felicidad). On the other side you have the “-ema” endings (el dilema, el problema, el tema) and a few other bits and pieces. Apart from that, you are more or less on your own.

I’ve always found the gender issue a little strange when it comes to people. We have the usual clear distinctions (el niño – the boy, la niña – the girl), but some people words

are always feminine irrespective of the gender of who they refer to. Two common examples of this are “la víctima” and “la persona”. We can say things like: “Mi hermano Pedro es una persona muy simpática”, and “la víctima era un hombre de 55 años”. These sentences sound perfectly normal in Spanish, but take a bit of getting used to for us.

When it comes to job words, there is a certain amount of argument and variation. This has a lot to do with the fact that for many years in Spain professional jobs where exclusively in the hands of men, so it was not necessary for them to have feminine forms. A good example is the word for “doctor” which would normally be “el médico”, but has evolved to “la médico”, and now “la médica”, although not everyone accepts this final form. Other cases where masculine job words have been adapted to the times are: “juez” (male judge) “jueza” female judge, “presidente” (male president) “presidenta” (female president). Some jobs do not alter their endings in any circumstances, for example: “el piloto, la piloto” (pilot) and more surprisingly “el modelo, la modelo” (model).

Now here’s a thought to finish off with – is the word “agua” masculine or feminine?

The Marriage of Figaro attracts another full house

The cast of Opera 2001 was outstanding in their performance of The Marriage of Figaro

THE FULL House signs were evident once again at Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre as one of the most popular pieces by Mozart and one of the most important operas in the history of music, “The Marriage of Figaro,” was performed in the City of Salt. The outstanding performance was provided by the company ‘Opera 2001’, performed in the original Italian language with Spanish subtitles projected on an overhead screen.

The Marriage of Figaro is one of the most important operas of the standard operatic repertoire and appears as number five of the most performed operas worldwide during the period from 2005 onwards. The story is set in seventeenth century Sevilla and revolves around Count Almaviva, who is married to Rosina, and his exploits in courting other women.

The entire cast were outstanding but special mention should be made to the performances of Paolo Ruggiero, baritone and soprano Natalia Lemercier, the magnificent interpretation of Francesca Bruni, plus Nicola Ebau. The performance was directed by Martin Mazik and featured a live orchestra. Despite the show lasting for more than three hours, as the cast took to the stage for their bows, they were rewarded by a long and thoroughly justified standing ovation, showing that culture in Torrevieja holds no bounds in the week after the frivolity of thousands enjoying Carnival in the city to more highbrow classic opera.

A guitar for all reasons LEE HOWARD is probably not a name that jumps to mind when you think of the pop music scene of the seventies.

by Keith Nicol However, if you have ever bought a record on the Chrysalis label or listened to any music from such bands or artists as Showaddywaddy, Steeleye Span, Debbie Harry or Paul Young, to name but a few, chances are you have heard his vocal and guitar work without knowing it.

Lee moved to the Cabo Roig area twelve years ago but because of his busy session and touring work, sold up and returned to the UK. Although still sought after for his session work, he decided the time was right to return to Spain and is readying himself to perform as both a solo artist, and hints at the possibility of starting a live band again to tour the Costas. He has already been signed up to perform on Saint Patrick’s Day as part of a fund raising event for Help At Home Costa Blanca at the Emerald Isle and can he heard presenting his own 60’s and 70’s radio show on TKO fm, 91.9fm, on Wednesday evenings between 8.00 and 10.00pm.

Lee asked his parents for a guitar for his twelfth birthday and such was his talent that just a year later, he and a group of friends performed on British Kids TV along with such artists as Stubby Kaye. Two years later he decided that he was not destined for academia and left school to train as a hairdresser on London’s Sloan Street before landing himself a job as tea boy and gofer at Chrysalis.

Still playing with his band and meeting lots of influential music people led to Chrysalis giving him a recording contract for three songs and that’s when it became the case of so close but so far for young Lee. Under the stage name of Howard Leigh he cut three discs: ‘Love coming my way’ and ‘Show me freedom’ which was top 40 in the UK. Lee was just

starting to get noticed by the likes of New Musical Express and Melody Maker and working with Adam Faith who was manager of Leo Sayer.

The year was 1974 and Lee’s third release was the Sayer composition, ‘I’m a one man band’. As it slowly climbed the charts and Lee prepared himself for chart success, the dream was shattered in a phone call from Adam Faith to say that Sayer had decided that he was going to release the song himself, and as Leo’s version rose up the charts to number six, Lee’s started to move the other way, and so with one phone call his shot at solo success disappeared.

The disappointment led to him becoming a regular session player and vocalist with Chrysalis and he managed to taste success with many other bands including Tony Burrows and the studio group of Edison Lighthouse. For the last couple of years he has been playing with Martin Murray from the Honeycombes before relocating to Spain just last week. THE FIRST performance of the tour ‘Cadore 33’ by Sergio Dalma takes place tomorrow, Saturday, in Torrevieja’s magnificent International Auditorium.

Spanish singer and heartthrob Sergio Dalma has chosen the Alicante town of Torrevieja to open his new show on the Iberian peninsula.

The concert will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 10:00pm, with tickets ranging in price between 25 and 45 euros. On this tour, the Catalan singer tours Spain’s major cities, offering his audience a taste of his newest recordings plus some of those songs that have shaped his career.

It is nearly 25 years since Sergio Dalma first made a name for himself in the music business, with his new album, ‘Cadore 33’, being his sixtieth album recording. Regardless of his success, hundreds of concerts and more than 500,000 copies sold of his last two albums, Dalma continues to create highly original versions of well known songs that have proved so popular that in several Latin American countries, many listeners believed that he originated the songs.

Mac Pro protection HI AUNTY: I recently bought a Mac Pro Book having always used PC’s before. People tell me you don’t need virus protection but I would feel easier with some sort of protection, especially for malware.

My Gmail address was recently hacked and although it looks like one of the distribution/ advertising types of hacking, it made me uncomfortable. I’ve changed all the necessary passwords and it does not seem to have done anything to my system.

Aunty says: Yes, supposedly Macs are less prone to hacking and viruses, with most viruses being written for Windows. Apple has installed OS X anti-malware now in 10.6.8 and above OS X operating system versions; there is no need to install anti-virus software. Third party anti-virus tends to cause issues when Apple issues OS X updates, so it’s not advised to install them.

Email addresses can be hacked many ways, even by simply guessing passwords (or by checking Facebook profiles for pets’ names which are common passwords!) which antivirus and antimalware cannot prevent.

A couple of problems...

DEAR AUNTY: I have Windows XP, IE 8, use Google as my home page, and access my emails via Outlook Express.

1st problem: I installed Google Chrome a while ago but since then I seemed to be receiving a lot of spam emails and decided to uninstall it. I did a search to find a solution then went into Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and Reset. This brought my internet back. However, most times when I try to use it a message appears ‘This tab has been recovered. A problem with this webpage caused IE to close and reopen the tab’: Most times I can then open the site, but sometimes it takes a while, and often freezes altogether.

2nd problem: When I run Malwarebytes I get a list of PUPs. How do I know which ones to delete? Any help you can give will be very much appreciated. Marie Aunty says: 1st problem - Google Chrome is an internet browser. It is nothing to do with email. So there should be no link between installing Chrome and an increase in spam.

Although you have reset Internet Explorer, crashed and recovered tabs will be down to issues with various add ons which it uses. The only way to solve this is to go into options and turn off all the add ons, and then one by one turn them on and see which one crashes IE. 2nd problem - PUP are: Potentially Unwanted Programmes.

In other words, Malwarebytes cannot determine if they are things that are safe, or not, and requires your input to help it decide. Only by looking at the details on the report can this be determined. In most cases on your screenshots, most of them look to be legitimate programmes, so I would advise not to delete anything!

Slow internet speed on laptop

HELLO AUNTY: Since acquiring my new laptop with Windows 8, I have noticed that my internet speed is very low.

The speed test indicates that my broadband speed is about 8 Mbps but when I try to go to a website it takes longer than my previous laptop with Vista. I have no other computer to test it. Have you heard anything about Windows 8 and its effect on internet speed?

Gadget Inspector Investigates: Gigaset Trio Cordless Phone Set THIS WEEK the Inspector takes a look at the Siemens Gigaset A120 Trio Cordless Phone Home phones tend to take a back seat these days to their smarter, more mobile counterparts. ONE OF the unfortunate and more enduring aspects of the recession is that many of Spain’s prestigious golf events have been withdrawn and it may be some years before they return.

By Tony Myles ARE THEY GONE FOREVER? I put that question to a lady who is ideally placed to answer it.

AND THERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS! Alicia Garrido Villacieros is an Executive Director for Deporte and Business the company that organises all the major golfing events in Spain including the Ladies European Tour which was held at La Sella until the sponsorship cash dried up.

This is part of a conversation we had on this subject: Tony - I think that most people would understand that in a tough economic climate all non-essential expenditure will be cut and so we have had to watch as our major golf events have been cancelled but is there anything that is being done to get them back?

Alicia - Well yes we have made a start. It is not huge but it is something we can build on. There is a gap of several months between the end of one season and the start of the next one which means that many professionals cannot compete for 4 to 5 months. Apart from the men’s European Tour the rest of the International Tour in Europe starts in May. Therefore we have decided to create a mini-tour for the months of February to April.

Tony - Well done, Alicia. It must be a challenge finding sponsorship money or is it getting easier?

Alicia - Of course we tried to secure sponsorship but as we were anxious to move forward quickly we decided to provide interim sponsorship through our own company. We will create the event at our own cost and having done so, perhaps it will be easier to find a commercial organisation willing to offer financial support.

Tony - That is a brave undertaking and I know that everyone will be hoping that it is a major success for you. So how exactly will it be organised?

Alicia - We have a structure which I believe will be attractive to the participants and also to the general public who come along as spectators. The format will be four tournaments in the Madrid area, each one held over two days.

Tony - I can understand why you would choose that location and I presume that the two days rather than four means that costs are significantly reduced.

Alicia - Yes of course and it will also appeal to a larger number of good quality players who would like this opportunity to start honing their game in preparation for the main season. We have also chosen some excellent courses

in that area and if your readers don’t already know of them I would suggest that they are worth considering as venues for their own golfing itinerary. They are La Moraleja, El Encin, RSHECC & Race. Each of these courses has previously hosted a PGA European tour event.

Tony - That is great news and hopefully just one more sign that there is a growing confidence in Spain in general. So what will the tour be called?

Alicia - This will be the first D&B Pro Golf Tour. Of course it will be amended when we secure a major sponsor.

Tony - We will be looking out for more news as the tour progresses but in the meantime I must thank you for your time and hope that we can follow this up in the next few weeks when I would like to find out more about what other activities your company has planned.

Alicia - We have lots happening and I will be happy to share them with you.

One final point worth mentioning is the fact that Alicia’s singular highest objective is to bring the Solheim Cup to Spain. When it does we will be among the first to tell you about it.

JUST GETTING into the car can be a problem. On an icy day a friend of mine swears by dipping the key to his old car in boiling water and then inserting it into the lock. But you don’t need to do that anymore I tell him because Autoglym de-icer can be sprayed anywhere on the car including the locks, without damaging the paintwork. You can’t say that about many de-icers. Any ice on the windows can be easily removed by the de-icer and scraper that form part of the Autoglym Winter Collection.

The next hurdle is the inside of the windscreen which invariably will be caked in condensation and in older cars even ice. The Autoglym microfibre cloth makes very light work of removing this leaving no smears as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz.
