Ciudad de Oviedo School to close by Keith Nicol

DESPITE PROTESTS and the backing of all local Torrevieja political parties, Valencia’s Department of Education has notified the Ciudad de Oviedo school and parents with children enrolled in this facility that they “can and should” start transferring their children to other schools in the city of Torrevieja, for the academic year 2014-2015, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the educational community

This is to confirm to parents that they “cannot enrol their children in this school, which will be dismantled.” Next Tuesday, the enrolment period opens for the relocation of the 266 children. The objective of the Ministry of Education is to meet the current vacancies in Torrevieja’s 13 educational centres without the implementation of the nine classrooms that are empty in the Acequión College, one sources said. However, some of these centres may not have space available today, and not know themselves until the end of this academic

year. The decision will also increase the student to teacher ratio, resulting in more students per class, as approved by the Valencian Government. Because of the location of the ‘Ciudad de Oviedo’ the most natural move would be en mass to the newly reopened ‘Acequión College’, which is a possible solution. Parents and teachers, who have already staged several demonstrations, yesterday expressed their “total rejection” to close the Ciudad de Oviedo and announced that new protests will be held.
