Juan Anguix, president of Elche
Going up and down
by Keith Nicol
DRAMA FOR Elche and euphoria in Eibar. Two months after the end of the last season, the ilicitano club now know that without a miracle turning around their fortunes in their next court appeal, they will play next season in the Second division. Meanwhile little Eibar will have another opportunity to play in the top ranks of the elite group despite finishing in the bottom three, and the relegation zone. And things could get even worse for Elche because if they fail to pay their debts within the next seven days, of around seven
million euros, to players and employees before July 31, they could be demoted once again and find themselves playing in 2B. This was determined on Tuesday by Eva Maria Alfageme, from the Central Court, who agreed to lift the precautionary measures from the previous court session and keep the resolution of the Administrative Tribunal of Sport (CAS) for which Elche will be relegated because of its debt with the IRS. The problem is compounded for Elche due to their debts to players and employees, amounting to nearly seven million euros.
If the new franjiverde directors, headed by businessman Juan Anguix cannot cover this debt before next July 31, they run the risk of descending to Second B, a circumstance which could result in ‘death in sport,’ said the club’s lawyer in court. The case had moved to the ordinary courts after the Professional Football League (LFP) decided to execute the penalty of relegation on Elche last June 5th, which was ratified by the TAD, nine days later.
