Urgent call for creation of police station in Torrevieja TORREVIEJA NEEDS a National Police Station. by Keith Nicol
Walk Across Borders starts August 23rd NOT MANY of us could walk the distance of a marathon a day for even a couple of days, never mind 44 days in a row. But when having access to your child is at stake, a parent must do what a parent must do. Read the full story on page 15.
THIS IS the message announced this week by the Federal Union of Police (UFP) in the Region, who has demanded the “urgent” implementation of a police station of the National Police in Torrevieja. Due primarily to owners of second homes, with more than 24,000 coming from Madrid alone, the UFP stated that: “the population quadruples in summer and the absence of a National Police presence also affects the security of citizens from other municipalities around Alicante “according to the union. In a statement, the UFP said that “the lack of National Police station jeopardizes the quality of public safety in the area, since Torrevieja needs are covered almost daily by members of the Provincial Police Station Alicante, which has just suffered the loss of professionals to cover other services.” According to the union, Torrevieja is set to become “one of the areas of Spain where the need is most urgent” to improve the implementation of a strong police infrastructure.
In this regard, he noted that; “Torrevieja is a city whose population grows from 107,000 people to over 400,000 in summer and is suffering from many crimes and in particular robberies, especially due to the action of organized gangs from Eastern Europe”. “The significant volume of police who, on a daily basis, have to leave the Provincial Commissioner to meet the needs of Torrevieja emphasises the need for the provision necessary for the construction of police building demonstrate the dramatic lack of interest in the implementation of this infrastructure by the competent authorities,” according to the UFP. “There are always excuses and obstacles; it is never a priority” noted the union, who explained that currently “the responsibility for public safety is taken by both by the Guardia Civil and the Policia Local, who are doing a great job despite not having the same powers as the National Police.”
