THE BEAUTIFUL MS Amadea, the Phoenix Reisen flagship, will anchor off Torrevieja on September 22nd, making history as the City of Salt’s first cruise ship arrival. The small 600 passenger ship sets sail from Bremerhaven on Friday 11th September and visits Hamburg, Portsmouth, Scilly Isles, Bordeaux, Saint Jean de Luz, Biarritz, Bilbao, Lisbon, Tangier, Torrevieja, Palma de Mallorca, Palamos, Sète, Porquerolles, finally finishing in Nice, France on September 27th. Unfortunately the arrival of the ship is being used locally as a political ping-pong ball with the Mayor, José Manuel Dolon either being grossly misinformed, totally out of touch, lying for his own reasons, just looking for some political points or else he happens to know something that the Cruise Line and opposition parties do not.

Concerned that the ship sets sail for Torrevieja in just three weeks time and yet they had heard nothing about plans for the arrival of the ship from the Mayor, councillors for Tourism or Commerce, Torrevieja’s small and medium business association, APYMECO, asked for a meeting with the Mayor to discus their ideas for making the historic arrival a success. Accompanied by the Councillor for Commerce Manuela Osuna, José Manuel Dolon then dropped a bombshell and effectively ended any discussion by stating that the MS Amadea was sending 90% of its guests on shore excursions to Zenia Blvd and Cartagena and that the remaining 60 guests would probably just stay in Marina Salinas, have a drink and return to the ship. The Cruise Line were quickly contacted and responded: “We have no excursions planned, as our stay is just a relaxed late afternoon/evening-stop for the individual shore leave. Passengers just go ashore for a walk along the paseo-/marina- and downtown-area.”

Given this information, Eduardo Dolon, Deputy of the Costa Blanca Tourist Board and APYMECO are now working ‘full steam ahead’ to ensure that the predominantly German, Austrian and Swiss visitors have an excellent time during their visit to Torrevieja.

AS SOON as it was announced and forced upon the city by Socialist Zapatero’s ruling PSOE government, flags were waved about the cost of building the facility, the quality of the water it would produce and the cost of the water, not to mention the estimated, less than 20-year lifespan of the facility. The Partido Popular fought and lost the legal battle against building the plant. It’s now more than six years behind schedule from being fully operational, apparently still lacks its own electrical power station to run at full capacity, and the water it produces is both of a low quality for agriculture and three times the price of purchasing water from elsewhere.

However, the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Change, Julia Alvaro, said this week that it was the intention of the Ministry to impose the use of water from Torrevieja’s desalination plant instead of providing a supply from the Tajo-Segura , against the preferences of farmers, which are supported Partido Popular in Valencia and the central-government in Madrid, because this option triples the costs for irrigation.

Because water is scarce in Murcia and Valencia, President Ximo Puig is showing commitment to desalination, explained the Regional Secretary, on a visit to Alicante. Alvaro also guaranteed a “supply” for households although the water produced is generally not

for dinking. The swift response was: “While the PP governs, water for Alicante and Murcia is guaranteed for irrigators,” promised the deputy general secretary of the Partido Popular Fernando Martinez-Maíllo, comments backed by Isabel Bonig , president of the PP in Valencia and Eduardo Dolon, secretary general of the PP in Alicante.

The PP reiterated their support for the memorandum regarding supplying water from the Tajo-Segura, one endorsed by five autonomous communities before the May election. The Tagus-Segura Water Transfer (Spanish: Trasvase Tajo-Segura) is one of the largest works of hydraulic engineering ever produced in Spain. Water from the Tagus River is channelled through this transfer system from the reservoirs of Entrepeñas (Province of Guadalajara) and Buendía (Province of Cuenca) into the Talave Reservoir on the Segura River and from here it eventually reaches Alicante and Murcia.

Of the 300 million euro invested by Acuamed, Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas, 55 million was from European funding and may have to be repaid due to Acuamed having missed certain operation deadlines, although this was not through any fault of their own.

Unfortunately, if the 55 million has to be repaid to the Commission, then this will be added onto costs to the end user, raising the price of water even higher.

‘‘Gag law’’ used when it suits

THE NEW Spanish public security law known as the “gag law” is coming under increased scrutiny as another person is fined for publishing a picture of a police vehicle on social media.

by Jeanette Rice THE WOMAN posted the photo of the police car as it was parked in a disabled parking space in the town of Petrer and made critical remarks about the event.

The woman captioned the image “park where you bloody well please and you won’t even be fined”, was tracked down and two days later given a fine of 800 euros.

Under the Citizen Security Law, what police consider the “unauthorised use of images of police officers that might jeopardise their or their family’s safety or that of protected facilities or police operations” is prohibited.

The two officers who were using the vehicle filed a complaint with the regional Interior Ministry.

Fermin Bonet, a police inspector for the town said the complaint was made on the basis of it offended the officers’ work and merited a sanction.

Fines vary between 600 euros and 30,000 euros for the unauthorised use of police images.

The town hall security councillor, Fernando Portillo, said “the officers were entitled to park in the space as they were on duty at the time, we would have preferred to find another solution but the officers were insistent on a fine to defend their honour”.

The law, drawn up by the ruling conservative Popular Party government, came into effect July 1 despite widespread

criticism from opposition parties, United Nations experts and rights groups, who said it curtailed free assembly and expression and was an attempt by the government to muzzle protests.

It must be confusing for the public as most police authorities publish on their facebook pages images of police vehicles and officers carrying out their duties, however readers can probably guess that these are without doubt portraying only a positive image unlike the one posted by the lady in question.

Had the officers not taken their action it could be argued that the issue would have soon been forgotten, however now media sources across the globe are reporting on the matter.

Police smash international drugs gang A MAJOR National Police operation has broken up a major international drug dealing gang arresting 29 people in Spain and Denmark.

by Jeanette Rice IN TOTAL 27 arrests were made in towns along the coast of Alicante and Murcia, two men were also held in Denmark.

And those taken into custody were from a number of different nationalities; 15 Spanish, four Britons, four Dutch, two Danish, one Irish, a Belgian, an Austrian and an Ecuadorian.

Spain’s Ministry of the Interior said the gang was dedicated to the acquisition, sales and distribution of large quantities of drugs including ‘speed’, ecstasy and marijuana.

The police operation was launched in October last year and came to a climax last weekend when four men were arrested in Javea.

Other arrests were made at different times in Calpe, Benidorm, La Nucia, Elche, Los Alca-

zares, Pilar de la Horadada, and Murcia.

And officers made 13 searches of Spanish properties to seize 36.7kg of speed, 2,205 ecstasy pills, 224,534 ‘acorns’ of vacuum-packed marijuana, 1,700kg of hashish pollen, and 31kg of hashish.

Police also seized four shotguns, a fake pistol, a compressed air gun, a rifle, a revolver, a large amount of ammunition for the weapons, six cars, two vans, a Tasar, and 166,490€ in cash.

In June, police also discovered a “sophisticated” marijuana plantation in Novelda, with hundreds of plants growing in the basement of a furniture business. In total three plantations were growing the drug with a total of 2,179 plants involved.

GCSE passes up, A* grades down

THOUSANDS OF teenagers and mature students received their GCSE results today with figures showing that the amount of passes had increased although the top grades were down on previous years. Grades A to C have risen slightly to 69% (previously 68.8%) but the top A* and A grades have edged down by 0.1%. With more than five million GCSE entries this year there are sure to be some happy and not so happy students planning their futures.

Ricky Gervais condemns Spain THE ACTOR and animal rights activist Ricky Gervais has spoken out about the running of bulls in the country having seen reports that seven people had died participating in the events.

by Jeanette Rice One of the victims was a 36 year old man in Penafiel, which is north of Madrid, whilst another man in Navarra aged 29 was gored in the back by a bull whilst taking part in a run.

Speaking out via social media Ricky Gervais was not mincing his words when he criticised the recent events and showed no sympathy for those who had lost their lives.

In one tweet Gervais said “I get kicks from watching humans being murdered by bulls”.

The press immediately picked up on the comment and Gervais responded by posting a video on his facebook page explaining that he was referring to where the victims had been partaking in the running of bulls.

Not deterred by the press Gervais went

on to say “in truth, I prefer the bull to win, I would prefer that people didn’t fight bulls, but if they do why torture it to death for fun, the bull is merely defending itself”.

Some of the comments that the actor made cannot be published due to the extreme language that he chose to use in his passionate explanation of such animal cruelty.

“People who go to see this and say that it is traditional, as was slavery, are not prepared to move on and progress as a society”.

Bullfighting was acknowledged as a part of Spain’s national heritage in 2013. Officials said the state has a duty to “preserve and promote” the sport even as opponents continue to decry it.

A battle of words over Gibraltar continues

AS GIBRALTAR gets ready to start its first National day of celebrations on Friday 21st August until September 10th the battle of words between them and Spain continues.

José Manuel García-Margallo, the Foreign Minister for Spain has indicated that they will put continued pressure on the British territory on Tuesday by reaffirming that “the party is over” for the rock.

Speaking on the Espejo Público programme on Antena 3, Sr García-Margallo repeated the words he first used in August 2013 when he confirmed a multi-pronged campaign targeting Gibraltar.

Whilst continuing to insist that Madrid was still committed to dialogue it seems strange that the minister has chosen to reiterate these words.

The Ministry of Health noted that the last drowning happened to a 71-year old man in Torrevieja on August 8th. In addition, the Emergency Health Services in the province have provided health care for a further 41 people including 8 children under 14 years old. Along with providing their lifeguard services, Red Cross personnel also obtain 158 daily water samples from the 36 beaches they service along with offering special services for bathers with disabilities on beaches approved for such service.

Of the 498 people rescued already this year, 87 people were aboard boats and 411 people in the water with 205 people rescued then transported to local hospitals for further treatment and recov-

ery. However, NGO pointed out that the number of transfers is actually higher, as in serious situations involving SAMU Medical teams; their Ambulance service “directly makes these transfers, of which Red Cross and has no record.”

In addition, the Red Cross has been involved with 17,306 ‘healthcare assistance’ issues, for various reasons, such as jellyfish stings, other marine animals and sunburn, to name the main issues facing local bathers. To these, one must add their program of social assistance.

FARMACIAS (pharmacies in the UK) seem to be popping up everywhere at the moment with the Comunidad Valenciana having quite a few new ones appearing over the last couple of months, a growth also being witnessed across other parts of Spain.

by Jeanette Rice The “Boots” like chemists are an excellent one stop advice centre as pharmacists in Spain are more highly trained than in some other countries and can provide treatment or offer professional advice on many common ailments, although they are not a substitute for going to see your doctor if you feel there is something more seriously wrong.

Those that haven’t lived in Spain long may not be aware of how helpful these farmacias can be or how paying for a prescrition is calculated, so RTN thought it would be useful to just explain a few of the rules and regulations involved.

All the local farmacias take it in turns to provide an out of hours service and this is known as the ´farmacia de guardia’.

There is usually a list displayed in the windows to say which will be open during the night or on a holiday.

Restrictions in Spain for providing medications are also slightly more relaxed than back in the UK, so it may be that something you require a prescription for in the UK is not needed here in Spain, it is always worth checking with your local farmacia.

Most medicines also cost less than other countries because of state imposed price restrictions. However a Royal Decree was passed in 2012 which meant that prescriptions were linked to income, although each autonomous region has its own internal regulations that may affect the Decree.

Know as the co-payment system most people, including

UK pensioners are now required to pay a percentage of their prescription costs. The percentage that will need to be paid is included on the prescription.

The percentage is calculated on information provided from your income declared in the annual resident tax declaration (IRPF) and if you have not made this declaration there is no indication on the prescription of how much you must pay.

This means that a blanket charge of 40 percent will be made for non pensioners with low incomes and a 10 percent charge for pensioners with no maximum limits. The plans are for the rate of payment to be incorporated in a persons SIP card (Social Security) with a chip that links to your resident tax declaration. This means that it will be increasingly more difficult to get a discount if you haven’t filed a tax return in Spain, even if you have had no earnings.

A guide to the charges which were correct as of July 2015 are: Pensioners Pensioners with an income below €18,000 will have to pay 10% towards the cost with a maximum of €8.23 per month.

Pensioners with an income above €18,000 but below €100,000 will have to pay 10% towards the cost up to a maximum of €18.52 per month.

Pensioners with an income above €100,000 will have to pay 10% towards the cost up to a maximum of €61.75 per month.

Non-Pensioners Non-pensioners with an income below €18,000 will have to pay 40% towards the cost with no maximum.

Living next door to Malace BAD NEIGHBOURS can make life a living hell.

by Keith Nicol SOMETIMES IT’S the playing of loud music, a dog that barks all night, illegal activities taking place and so the list goes on and on. For a couple of residents in Torrevieja, a north African family and friends have been showing contempt for their neighbours and doing what they like, regardless of requests to clean up their act.

And a good clean is what is required. One couple moved to the Urbanization in November 2008. Bob (not his real name) said: “the property above us was empty and up for sale. Our property is on one of the older urbanizations. The Spanish owner of the property above us lives in a second property he owns on the same Urbanisation.”

Life in Torrevieja was great for about 18-months and then out of the blue in early 2010, a north African couple moved in above them, who are renting the property from the Spanish owner. In the beginning the new neighbours went around Torrevieja’s bins and fly tipping spots and collected rubbish and junk in their two vehicles. They sold what they picked up very quickly and so the garbage collection was more of an inconvenience that a problem. However, later in 2010 the rubbish started to accumulate and this has got progressively worse. To add to the ‘neighbour from hell’ tag,, the wife of the North African had her first child in late 2010. Now in 2015 she has three screaming children aged five, three and a half and ten months.

Bob continued: “In June or July 2014 my bathroom and bedroom were flooded due to leak from above caused by a 5 metre blockage in the 160mm soil pipe above. This caused tiles to collapse around my bathroom extractor fan, which just fell out of the ceiling, and left a dark brown watermark all over

my bathroom ceiling and about 25% of our main bedroom.

The owner had a dyno-rod type company clear this 5-metre blockage. I had to repair the damage at my own expense since my insurance company informed me that the owner had no cover, which I understand is against the law. This is when I decided to try and do something about the rubbish.”

In October 2014, Bob and his German neighbour had a meeting with Jean Paul at the former ORAI Office. He helped fill out all the official complaint forms, which were then submitted to the PROP Office.. In January 2015, Jean Paul said that the health department were working on the problem and that a visit had been paid to the property to evaluate and to prepare a report and activate a plan of action. However, still nothing seemed to change.

On 11th March 2015, Bob received a message from Jean Paul saying that he was meeting with the Councillor for Health,

Mamen Mateo and a month later they all met up. “At this meeting I gave her copies of photos and she said the owner would be contacted and instructed to clean the rubbish within a certain timeframe otherwise the council would move it.

She also stated that the children could be taken into care if deemed unhealthy or unsafe for them.”

To add to Bob’s woes, he added: “Since the change of government everything has stopped.” The ‘garbage tip’ gets worse by the day. It is now attracting cockroaches, mosquitoes and worst of all rats. Without a new ORAI Office and anyone to ask for assistance from the new government team, and nobody who could answer questions at the Town Hall, Bob has turned once again to RTN to see if we can help him with his plight. Thus next week we shall try and contact the councillor and department responsible and try and help Bob take the next step.

Empty promises I READ in one of the local papers that the new council is going to take action against people who dump furniture next to rubbish bins. I am really fed up with these irresponsible people, as there is no need for this sort of thing. Wherever you buy new furniture the people you buy from will always take the old away. Why can’t people take pride in where they live?

A couple of local roads, Nicolas de Bussi and the nearby road Luis Gordillo, have become a dumping ground for old furniture, so the time has come for some real action. Councillors, why not get on your bikes, pedal around this area and see for yourselves!

It is time for reform on this matter, and time to spend some money on this. Compared with most other coastal regions this is an absolute slum. The over buildings, the builds not completed, all need to be demolished and park areas built. Come on, all you people who think the same as I do, get complaining.

Expats vote in the UK Gas bill I do not think that any ex-pat who has permanently lived abroad should be elegible to vote in the UK. If individuals wish to live abroad, then they should not retain the right to partly determine how those deciding to remain in the UK should live. I consider the attitude of those people wishing to vote as egoistic and selfish.

If I were resident in the UK and people abroad were to vote in any election or referendum producing a result contrary to my wishes I would be really annoyed.

My attitude in life is “treat other people how I wish to be treated”.

SINCE NOVEMBER 2014, we have had horrendous bills totalling 1,700€.

We want to warn people to check the tariff when they sign up.

There are two tariffs, and we signed up for a “holiday tariff”. The rep who signed us up knew we were residents, as the form was all in Spanish. We trusted her! When the first bill for 224.94€ arrived, we were worried. A bill in March for 728.63€, for 60 days scared us even more. On asking the rep for advice, we were told, “it was not her problem “ An interpreter phoned the gas company on our behalf, and was told about the two tariffs. They said we could not have a refund.

When we found out about the two tariffs, we asked our president to warn people of this problem, if they wanted natural gas.

She informed us we could be charged with libel if she put out this letter. Is she right?

Can we, through your newspaper, make others aware of the problem?

Backlash over Jewish reggae singer’s axing A SPANISH music festival re invites an artist having axed them from the bill.

MATISYAHU, A Jewish-American singer was scheduled to perform on Saturday at the annual Rototom Sunsplash festival, held in Benicàssim, a beach town on the eastern coast of Spain.

The festival bills itself as an event promoting a culture of peace, social justice

and non-violence. And is a large European reggae festival, which takes place every summer, the festival imitates the traditional Jamaican Reggae.

removed from the list of performers.

The festival’s change of plans has come after the World Jewish Congress wrote to Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, calling on him to condemn the cancellation, which they called “anti-Semitic,” and demanding firm action by Spain.

Spain’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the government understood the Jewish communities’ unease, adding that Spain opposed boycott campaigns against Israel. It reiterated its support for a Palestinian state through negotiations.

The World Jewish Congress and the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain lauded the reversal Wednesday and thanked the organizers.

The organisers experienced a barrage of criticism initially from human rights groups. “We want the performer removed because of his record of hateful and racial incitement and his defence of Israeli war crimes and human rights violations,” said Omar Barghouthi, co-founder of the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Organisers reported that there had been coercion and threats to those working at the festival if the performer was not removed from the event.

Matisyahu, who’s real name is Matthew Miller said in a statement “I support peace and compassion for all people. My music speaks for itself, and I do not insert politics into my music.”

The festival organisers have publicly apologised for cancelling Matisyahu and invited him to play as originally planned on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the festival said that “we recognise our mistake but had been pressured by a local branch of the BDS”.

The BDS activists have been successful in convincing a number of musicians and artists in the past to cancel engagements in Israel or Israel related events, these include Roger Water from Pink Floyd, Elvis Costello and Sinead O’Connor.

The festival, which started on the 15th of August and runs until the 22nd of August.

Four year old drowns in pool

A FOUR year old boy tragically drowned on Sunday as the family spent their holiday in a villa in Mijas, Costa del Sol. The boy, named as Refoel Berkowitz fell into the pool as he played with a group of children as his parents were entertaining some friends.

The group were eating dinner with around 20 guests when one of the other children, a 15 year old boy raised the alarm after discovering Refoel in the water.

One of the group, a doctor, tried to resuscitate the young boy prior to the paramedic’s arrival but all attempts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family, who come from Golders Green in the UK were understandably devastated at the loss of their son.

Shipwrecked in Torrevieja THERE’S A shipwreck in Torrevieja. It’s a very special site and for on day only… August 26th.

by Keith Nicol IF TRUTH be told it’s not a real shipwreck but a reproduction of the world’s oldest known site, and Boys and Girls from ages 7 to 15 have the opportunity to explore it for free. But better be quick as only 72 lucky children will have the opportunity to do so.

“The wreck of Uluburun: a shipwreck in your pool” is an educational project that recreates in its original dimensions and accuracy of the planet’s oldest underwater archaeological site as explained by the Councillor for Sports Pablo Samper who said that “The outdoor swimming pool will host the oldest shipwreck in the Mediterranean: the Uluburun, an ancient ship wrecked off the coast of Turkey at the end of the Bronze Age.” The “discovery and recovery” exhibition is an activity led by a team of professionals from various disciplines. They have produced an exact replica of one of the most important underwater sites in the world. It’s an innovative and fun learning space.

The activity has been developed by the department of sports, who will run two sessions that can have a maximum

number of 36 at each on Wednesday 26th August. Those interested in participating can register on the morning session, which will run from 11.30 to 1.30pm or in the afternoon, 5.00pm to 7.00pm.

Samper said that “our town will host the replica of the remains of the sunken ship, an introduction to the fascinating world of underwater archaeology for all boys and girls, who can dive onto the wreck, feel like real archaeologists and learn how the treasures are extracted from the depths “ “From the Department” has he added, “it aims to bring participants culture and history through sport and using a municipal facility such as the outdoor pool, which has been very active in recent months.”

There are a total of 36 places for each of the sessions. In addition, participants must have basic knowledge of swimming and diving and attend the activity with swimsuit, goggles and towel.

XIII International Band Festival THIS YEAR La Sociedad Musical Ciudad de Torrevieja, ‘Los Salerosos’, celebrate their 25th anniversary with a series of concerts in Torrevieja.

Thursday night features the Northern Ireland Concert Band

by Keith Nicol ONE OF their most established events is the International Band Festival, which starts next Wednesday, August 26th, in Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre.

Los Salerosos will open the festival on Wednesday while The Northern Ireland Concert Band, make the trip from Belfast to appear on the 27th. On Friday August 28th, the Portuguese Band ‘Loureiro’ provides the big band concert. As is traditional at the festival, the final closing night of the festival will feature all three bands in a special concert on Saturday evening. All performances start at 10.00pm.

This is the first time that the Northern Ireland Concert Band has appeared in Torrevieja. They were originally set up as The Band of The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service in 2005, with just seven members. The band

now number almost 40 and are celebrating their tenth anniversary of their origin this year. The band enjoyed many successful concerts and partnerships over the years as The Band of The NIFRS but a decision was taken in June 2013 for the band to become independent and was renamed ‘The Northern Ireland Concert Band’. The Band is made up of members from all sections of the community and all parts of Northern Ireland.

Tickets are priced at 5.00€ and may be purchased in the following ways: Monday through Friday from 11:00am to 1:00pm from the Official Headquarters of the La Sociedad Musical Ciudad de Torrevieja, in C\ La Paz, 143, or from Tuesday to Friday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in the office of the Municipal Box Office and before each show, space permitting.

More than a hundred parents to be attend workshops THE UNKNOWN territory that new parents face with the birth of their first child was part of the program offered by Torrevieja’s University Hospital. Their birth assistance program is driven by the team of midwives from the University Hospital and has the participation of different specialists.

This summer the University Hospital of Torrevieja had more than a hundred mothers, fathers and companions participate in their Birth Support Workshops driven by the team of midwives at the centre. The objective of this initiative is to provide guidelines to help with the both the expectation of delivery and to report changes occurring during pregnancy and the postpartum period, in order to achieve a satisfactory and safe birth. The sessions are held every month by midwives, nurses, nursing assistants and obstetricians.

The health centre explained that the purpose of this activity is to involve partners and support groups to be an active part of labour, to enjoy the moment and to be a support and a crutch to the mother before, during and after pregnancy. On Monday the Foyer of the hospital hosted one of the workshops, which was open to the participation of anyone who wished to attend and find out more about the program.

The day included a theoretical part with examples of everyday situations that can be found a new family and a practical session with the most suitable positions for childbirth, massages and use of balls and mattresses. The University Hospital of Torrevieja offers the classes throughout the year including various workshops to provide the best assistance throughout the process until birth.

The getaway “Game of Thrones” set grows insurance gamble National news...

ONE IN five visitors to Spain arrives without travel insurance, prompting the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to warn travellers not to play the ‘Great Getaway Gamble’.

by Jack Troughton Insurance claims last year totalled £370 million according to the Association of British Insurers – but travelling without cover can seriously damage a person’s wealth as well as ruining a holiday.

And a survey across British consulates in Spain based on travellers having to replace a lost or stolen passport this summer reveals that as many as one in five did not have insurance.

Travelling in Europe can cost thousands if things go wrong – for example, the average cost of a claim for medical expenses in 2014 rose to £1,022 from £930 the previous year.

However, the FCO highlights the sharp contrast to taking out insurance; the average cost of an annual travel policy is a mere £32.

In a new campaign, based on a roulette board, travellers are warned about the ‘Great Getaway Gamble’ and the cost and stress of not having cover.

Spandau Ballet forced to cancel Spanish shows

BILL A spokesman said: “Rolling the dice, not hedging your bets, and being left with a £1,022 bill is no way to start or end a holiday, especially when this pricey sum equates to a luxury cruise to the Caribbean, a week in four-star accommodation for two in Lanzarote, or a new high-end laptop...with change left over.

“The FCO is encouraging British nationals to make travel insurance an essential part of their holiday preparation with the ‘Great Getaway Gamble’. Will you get back with your finances in the black, or return from the Med in the red?”

And as part of its ‘travel aware’ campaign, the FCO is warning people should insure they have the level of insurance cover needed for their planned activities; answer questions about medical history fully and honestly or risk not being covered when making a claim; and that travel policies may not cover accidents where someone has not taken reasonable care or consumed excessive amounts of alcohol.

THE PRODUCTION of Season 6 for the popular television show are working hard in Pechina, Almeria at the moment, which will be a new location for the programme.

The structure currently being built in the new location will have avid fans wondering what part of the cult show this will feature in as rumours that the majority of the materials has been brought directly from Ireland to try to maintain some form of secrecy.

The building which is circular is similar to a temple but this is not the only location for the filming of Season 6 with other reported locations being Almeria, Gerona, Navarra, Peniscola, Santa Florentina castle in Barcelona and Zafra castle in Guadalajara.

In the European Economic Area, people should also carry an up to date European Health Insurance Card (an EHIC) in addition to taking out insurance. This gives access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in the 28 EU member countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

The EHIC does not cover private healthcare, additional costs such as mountain rescue, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property.

THE SPANDAU Ballet band were forced to cancel three planned concerts this weeks as the drummer John Keeble has fallen ill.

The band cancelled their Tuesday gig only hours before being due on stage as the drummer had been told he cannot work on “doctors orders”.

A spokesperson for the band said “it is with deep regret that Spandau Ballet have had to cancel their three shows in Spain this week, unfortunately John Keeble is unable to perform and we can only apologise to the fans”.

The band themselves said “cancelling shows is something that is always hard to do but our priority has to be the health of our friend and getting him better.”

The band were due to perform at the Porto Ferrada and Ibiza Rocks festivals as well as a concert in Marbella.

It is not known exactly what is wrong with the 56 year old drummer but fans have been quick to support the band with one tweeting “concerts can be held any time, just get well soon John”.

Time to get messy with La Tomatina La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol near to Valencia in Spain.

by Jeanette Rice THOUSANDS UPON thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

Before 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Buñol’s normal 9,000 person population, so in 2013 official ticketing began to limit the number of participates to 20,000 people.

This years event will take place on Wednesday 26th August.

At approximately 11am lorries haul the bounty of tomatoes into the centre of the town, with the tomatoes coming from Extremadura, where they are less expensive.

Technically the festival does not begin until one brave person has climbed to the top of a two-story high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize.

The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins.

Once it begins, the battle is generally every

man for himself.

After one hour the fighting ends and the cleaning process begins involving fire trucks spraying down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Buñol River to wash themselves.

The event dates back to 1945 when young men met in People’s Square to witness parades, a group of boys feeling mischievous ended up in a battle with others who then started throwing anything they could get their hands on at each other.

A nearby vegetable stall soon became the ammunition depot as they gathered tomatoes to throw at each other until the police arrived.

The following year the young people did the same and it soon became tradition and named La Tomatina.

The event which was banned for a period in the early 50’s by the local law enforcement has become world famous and was declared in 2002 as a Festival of International Tourist Interest.

Olga Sanchez adds colour to the Casino ALONG WITH a wine of honour, the brief opening ceremony of the Exhibition of paintings by Olga Sanchez was inaugurated at Torrevieja’s Casino.

by Keith Nicol ON DISPLAY is a collection of twenty-five works in oil, acrylic and mixed media. The Mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolon, President of the Casino, Ramón Torregrosa, attended the inauguration along with the councillors, Sandra Sanchez, sister of the artist and Inmaculada Montesinos plus local artist, Antonio Conesa who is recovering from a serious illness, but said he did not want to miss this event.

Entrance to the Casino is absolutely free with the exhibition open for viewing until August 28th. The works are for sale at prices ranging between 180€ and 520€. If you are interested in any of them may consult the artist by phone 654 486 105.

The artist was born in San Miguel de Salinas in 1970 and has lived in Torrevieja since 1972. She has a Degree in Fine Arts, specializing in drawing, from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Since 1999, she has been teaching drawing classes at several schools in the Community of Murcia and Valencia and is currently working at the IES Mediterraneo of Torrevieja.

Olga taught drawing and painting in the towns of El Pilar de la Horadada and San Miguel de Salinas for several years, in collaboration with the Department of Culture.

As a painter she has exhibited in Torrevieja, Valencia, Pego, Badajoz, Guadalest and Murcia. She has participated in several fast painting competitions, winning the first prize in 1999 in Torrevieja. She is a two-time winner of the Posters of the Semana Santa Easter Week Poster Competition in Torrevieja, for the editions of 1992 and 1999.

She was a finalist in the National Painting Contest of “CAM”, that exhibited her work for six months around the Comunidad Valenciana. She was selected in the VI and VII contestexhibition “Women in Painting “organized by El Corte Ingles.

Recently, she exhibited in San Miguel de Salinas in the “Cave of Mary”, September 2013. In October 2014, she held an exhibition at the House of Culture of Pilar de la Horadada, with “The colour of the flowers.”

Olga added: “In my professional life as a painter for several years there was a break, dedicating myself completely to my work as a teacher and especially my children. Now after all this time, I am back to painting and drawing. For me it is a return to the past, especially for drawing and painting, where I put a lot of me into the work. I enjoy each of the strokes and lines and that’s where one can appreciate the mixture of colours that I like so much.”

La Vuelta preparations underway

TORREVIEJA WILL enjoy two historic firsts over four weeks: the arrival of the MS Amadea Cruise Ship on September 22nd and the start of the 9th stage of La Vuelta on August 30th.

by Keith PREPARATIONS FOR the start of the 9th stage of La Vuelta, the Tour of Spain is “a success” as confirmed in a Press Conference on Tuesday hosted

by Torrevieja’s Mayor, José Manuel Dolon and the Councillor for Sports Pablo Samper.

The mayor explained that on Monday, the Information Commission, which is formed by Policia Local, councillors, representatives from Torrevieja’s cycling club, held a meeting that has served to “give everyone participation in the decision-making process and listen to suggestions and initiatives that were raised.”

This stage of the Tour will leave from the Paseo Juan Aparicio, close to the Hippy Market and the monument to the Man of the Sea, Hombre del Mar. The cyclists will go along Aven-

ida de la Purisima, along the coast, to La Mata. The Mayor announced that for things to move smoothly there is a “need for some small works, which have already been initiated such as placing a ramp up to Calle Ramon y Cajal, the removal of street furniture, and other items, to ensure we always have a width of at least four meters for the peloton to pass.”

Samper called the event: “it’s a very important fact that through sports, we want to project the image of Torrevieja, giving the city visibility and viewers throughout Spain and the world to enjoy all the images of the city and especially the race is particularly important.”

Riders will begin with a neutralized start, so the group will travel several kilometres parallel to the beaches at below race pace. The

distance to the flying start will be about 8.5 km, in the hamlet of La Mata.

The mayor noted the on Saturday 29th the entire pre-race teams will assemble at four in the afternoon and is expected that several trucks from the organization will be located in the port area, along with 20 and 30 buses, and cars of all the different teams. José Manuel Dolon indicated that on the day of departure there will be a major police deployment, for which they will request 30 added agents on overtime, to reinforce the troops of the Guardia Civil and Protection Civil.

On August 30th, traffic will be cut to different streets in the city and in some cases traffic will be allowed

to those accessing parking. On this point the mayor said that “the port will have parking entry and exit from Calle Chapaprieta, but it will not be possible to enter the fairgound parking area close to Dique de Levante” Finally, José Manuel Dolon reported that one of the suggestions presented at the meeting of the Information Commission, was to invite the veteran Orihuela Cyclist Bernardo Ruiz to be present at the start. Dolon reported that “this morning I already contacted him about this.”

Unfortunately, one aspect missing from the official announcement from the Town Hall was the time that the cyclists will depart at from Torrevieja. However, in order to keep readers informed, the official

website for the race states that the start of the 168.3 kilometre stage will start from Torrevieja at 1.34pm.

A charity shop helping raise crucial operating funds for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has reopened after an 82-yearold man kindly stepped forward as a volunteer.

The Los Montesinos shop, located in the town square, had been shut for several weeks due to a lack of volunteer staff.

Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said British expat Ivan Cottrellcalled early this month asking why the shop was closed, and promptly offered to step in when he learned of the difficulties.

“He took over as manager of the shop and began single-handedly running it, six days a week. He’s now managed to round up three other lovely volunteers to help him. We’re so grateful. He really proves that you’re never too old to volunteer for the EHCRC,” Sue said.

“However, we do have other charity shops that are struggling to stay open due to a lack of volunteers, especially the Pilar de la Horadada shop. If there’s anyone out there who would like to help out, we’d be grateful to hear from you.”

Sue said the centre is also looking for donations of large items such as furniture, and a pick-up service can be arranged to collect them from your house. Each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased from the charity store.

to the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre or spent in the charity shops goes towards the feeding and care of the more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre.

The latest fund-raising night at Restaurante El Alto La Dolores, was a little disappointing with only 67 people attending, compared with 184 in June. Perhaps, the organisers should not have tried to compete with the Spanish Fiestas. Nonetheless, those who did come, and support the charity, The Children’s Care Home Elche, were extremely charitable and generous, and almost 500 euros was raised for the Home.

Woody, possibly the most talented and popular entertainer on the Costa Blanca, entertained with two great sets, including his tribute to Buddy Holly. He kept the dance floor full all night, and received excellent feedback. One young lad even drew a picture of Woody with a message that he was ‘the tops’.

Restaurant owners, Andres and Berna, once again donated a Mediterranean Cruise as first prize in the raffle, and this was won by Rita Hand, from Quesada. Rita is a regular supporter of these charity nights, and a deserving winner.

On 4th September, Vinny Mack will be entertaining and helping to raise funds for Torrevieja Stroke Support. It is not true that all foreigners and expatriates must make a new Spanish will or modify their existing one.

AS MENTIONED in recent articles, the new Regulation 650/2012 affecting probate and inheritance in Spain, entered into force on the 17th of August 2015.

WE ADVISE all foreign citizens and expatriates who have any kind of assets in Spain to make a Will or Testament for their Spanish assets, and those expatriates who already have a Spanish will, to review it.

However, as some people have pointed out, not all Wills made before 08.17.2015 must be changed, in order to opt expressly for the national law of the testator or testatrix in all cases. This is because Regulation 650/2012 itself provides in its Article 83 covering the treatment of old Wills, that generally they will remain valid.

The transcribed article 83 reads as follows: “ Transitional provisions 1. This Regulation shall apply to the succession of persons who die on or after 17 August 2015.

2. Where the deceased had chosen the law applicable to his succession prior to 17 August 2015, that choice shall be valid if it meets the conditions laid down in Chapter III or if it is valid in application of the rules of private international law which were in force, at the time the choice was made, in the State in which the deceased had his habitual residence or in any of the States whose nationality he possessed.

3. A disposition of property upon death made prior to 17 August 2015 shall be admissible and valid in substantive terms and as regards form if it meets the conditions laid down in Chapter III or if it is admissible

and valid in substantive terms and as regards form in application of the rules of private international law which were in force, at the time the disposition was made, in the State in which the deceased had his habitual residence or in any of the States whose nationality he possessed or in the Member State of the authority dealing with the succession.

4. If a disposition of property upon death was made

prior to 17 August 2015 in accordance with the law which the deceased could have chosen in accordance with this Regulation, that law shall be deemed to have been chosen as the law applicable to the succession.

CHINA’S MOVE to devalue its currency by around 4 per cent has caused chaotic panic on global financial markets over the past week.

WHILST TO many this is just ‘news’ that ‘doesn’t affect me’ then think again.

Its ‘one-off’ cut to the yuan earlier this week was followed by two more, changes that have shaken currency markets and sent shares and commodity prices spiralling downwards.

Only last month, Chinese stock markets fell following the intervention of government authorities to put a floor under plunging prices.

That rout mostly affected investors in China and Asia-focused funds, but the yuan devaluation has set off even bigger shockwaves across financial markets.

It’s even prompted talk about a global currency war, or ‘competitive

devaluation’, with countries trying to keep currencies weak to boost exports and support their economies.

Historically such contests have ended up hurting all sides as trade falls and inflation is imported.

China’s action could make the US Federal Reserve delay a longanticipated interest rate hike in September, as officials will be wary about doing anything that strengthens the dollar further right now.

For the average man in the street the biggest impact is going to be where their investments or pension funds have exposure to Far Eastern Funds as well as the impact that has happened to all the western markets though these now seem to be recovering. As will the Far East in time.

This is just another of the financial uncertainties that can depress the markets.

Gardens improve as gardens start to cool down AS THE days shorten and occasional showers or storms cool off and dampen plant growth and soils plants are already showing signs of re-budding for more extensive late summer and autumn flower displays. This is a pleasant and encouraging happening after the third hot summer in a row when the emphasis has had to be just helping plants to survive the long day after long day of scorching weather.

Today the temperature has dropped down to just below 30 degrees centigrade and tomorrow although back to 35 degrees centigrade promises a much wanted thunderstorm with others to follow on several days during the next week.

So it was a pleasant morning pottering around the garden after an early morning walk at only 16 degrees in the shade.

Fortunately a threatened thunderstorm blew past early yesterday evening so the annual urbanisation barbecue happened as planned and it was not too hot for the volunteer cooking team or later spirited dancing.

Although there are no shrub beds within the village sports and social area in which the event was held good displays of flowering climbers on the fences of surrounding properties gave festive colour and stimulating evening perfume from lady of the night, honey suckle, solanum and jasmine flowers as did lower under growths of mirabilis. To stimulate autumn displays do deadhead geraniums and roses. Wandering around the garden a short while ago I noticed several of the dreaded African geranium moths flitting around geranium plants. So do be vigilant and spray several times a week.

Vegetable plants are also looking up and droop for less hours a day with more tomato, pepper, aubergine flowers forming

fruit. Looking forward to autumn and winter harvests some gardeners have already sown butter bean and broad bean seeds.

Figs are now ripening rapidly in some areas although others will still be a week or to be at their best, as will ours. Fortunately friends visiting for tapas last Sunday arrived with a timely gift of two large washing up bowls of ripe black figs. On Monday some were cooked in white wine and anise for desert during the week and freezing for later use, others were dried as a tasty dried fruits for winter walks and a few were converted to jam to add to breakfast yogurts.

Although rarely watered or fed our avocado tree, raised twenty five years ago as a UK house plant from a Marks and Spencer fruit, is heavily laden with fruit as a result of the tropical summer so it is now being watered once a week to help the young fruit to swell. Indeed I must do this once this article is completed and emailed to the RTN editor.

Tropical weather has also stimulated a collection of cumin plants to grow strongly so hope to be using genuine ecological ground roots to colour and flavour winter cooking. By the way don’t forget to collect and freeze or dry mock pepper fruits for the out of season flavouring of fish dishes. They have an interesting tang compared to purchased peppers but don’t try to grind them in a pepper grinder as it will gum up.

Well enough for now I must go and eat some of the wild boar stew cooking on the solar cooker. Cooking times have been quick this past month with the exceptionally high temperatures.

Cucaracha Club makes film history IT’S BEEN an amazing week for fans of action and spy films.

by Keith Nicol Tom Cruise returned in the latest ‘Mission Impossible’; the much-anticipated ‘The Man from Uncle’ hit the big screen plus the fifth in the ‘Bourne’ series was announced with news that Matt Damon would be returning to reprise the role. Locally, there was much excitement for the hardworking team, cast and crew of the Cucaracha Club. There were many who said it could not be down but the film team have proved many people wrong and in less than a year the film has gone from the printed page to finished film and after being ‘topped and tailed’ will be ready for distribution and entry into different film festivals around the world.

The film is the brainchild of Billie Anthony Gaddess. Apart from actually editing the film, a task expertly done by Richard Haywood from Viva TV, Billie has been a man for all reasons.

Scriptwriter; lead actor (not by choice but by chance), associate director and producer; fundraiser, PR and marketing guy; babysitter; cameraman, sound guy, transport’ logistics and even sandwich maker supreme. A man of many words on screen, Billie summed up his very own ‘mission impossible’ by simply saying; “I am proud to say we succeeded where many thought we would fail and we did it with aplomb.”

The historic fact is that ‘The Cucaracha Club’ is the very first

International, ‘Crowdfunded’ film to be produced in its entirety on the Southern Costa Blanca. With well over a hundred people making up cast, crew, extras and those tireless working behind the scenes, Billie also wanted to say a collective “Thank You” to everyone for their participation and support.

From bit roles to lead actors to walk-ons, everyone had words of thanks and support for Billie and the team. Chloe Leigh said; “An amazing opportunity to be part of The Cucaracha Club film; singing the Soundtrack; combined with the music video but actually part of the film too. Simply can’t wait to see it on the big screen. Bring on CC2.”

Clive Gray was consumed with excitement as the trailer was released: “Hanging out of aeroplanes, falling off boats, being catapulted off jet skis and sharing beds with gorgeous women have been some of the things we’ve had to put up with but hey; we’re professionals; we can do this. It’s the springboard from which we raise the standards for our next project, which is currently being planned.” Julie Kay added: “The making of The Cucaracha Club has been a very positive experience for me, a very steep learning curve. I had been seeing a lovely man for several months, but found him quite dull at times and lacking any get-up-and-go. I then met a more upbeat guy, who seemed to be more interesting and exciting. It was great for a few weeks, then he told me he’d met someone else. I now regret finishing with my nice, quiet man. He won’t take me back, and I realise what I have given up. To make matters worse, he has another woman.

Relationships need working at constantly, so that things don’t get stale, and both parties are happy. It is possible, even if you are both different personalities, to compromise with each other, and find activities you both enjoy, but it takes effort on both sides.

I assume you have tried explaining your mistake fully, and have told him that you regret your actions very much.

Other than that, if he sees no way back, there is not much to be done, especially if he is happy in another relationship.

Irresponsible My granddaughter is 29, and I feel she is wasting her life.

Any jobs or further education she’s had, have been given up after a few weeks. Her parents indulge her totally, and pay for one fad after another. Just recently, they paid for an expensive correspondence course on clairvoyance and tarot card reading, which she didn‘t complete.

She has no direction, and no sense of responsibility. I have spoken to my daughter about this, but my comments aren’t welcome.

Your daughter and her husband are enabling their daughter’s behaviour, and there is no future in that. If you are close to your granddaughter, you could to try and have a frank talk to her. We all have to consider our futures, and think about the time when our parents will no longer be around to support us. You might incur the wrath of your daughter by doing this, but at least you will know you are doing it with the best of intentions. Keep the conversation light, and avoid lecturing or criticism.

A sandwich away!

I WOKE up over Amsterdam, worried that I may have snored whilst I was asleep. It had been a very early departure from Alicante, and I was so glad that my favourite Starbucks skinny latte was my breakfast, as I planned to have brunch when I got to Oslo, shortly after eleven o’ clock. It had been a quiet flight, and uneventful, and I had missed the drinks trolley and curled up to catch up on some missed sleep. The biggest secret to dozing on a plane is to wear dark sunglasses, as most cabins are too bright too much of the time. It was sunny out there above the clouds, and there were only 75 minutes left of the flight now. I would make my connection, grab any kind of sandwich, shop in the duty free store and be in Trondheim by late afternoon. My mind was filled with what work I had to do, but a slug of water later and I was settling down to a delightful combination of meditation and dozing, both which relaxed me, body and soul, on my journey.

I woke when the plane was making a left turn to start the final descent to Oslo. The beautiful inlets and bays and the red roofed houses of Norway were bathed in sunshine as I looked to the left of the cabin, but on the right hand side were the very darkest of sinister black clouds, and for sure it was going to rain. Distant thunder resounded through the cabin, and the Scandinavian Airline System Boeing 737 was ever nearing the ground. We skimmed along a bank of low level clouds and the plane began to shudder a little, still going slowly downwards to land. The cabin crew were seated and belted and the Captain advised us all that in five minutes we would be landing at Gardemoen Airport.

Five minutes later, and I began to think that there was something very wrong in the landing procedure of the plane.

The nose of the plane was elevated and the engines were periodically sounding as if they were accelerating..... the plane was being flipped from side to side, dipping and shaking with engines roaring. It was no surprise then that this landing was aborted, and the plane immediately went into a rapid ascent. Audible pings could be heard on the on board telephone, amongst them, I imagine, the three pinged distress call from the cockpit to the Senior of the cabin crew. From now on all messages from the PA system would be in Norwegian only, which didn’t help me very much. The Captain explained that landing was aborted because of tail winds, and that we would have to re join the holding pattern and that we would be landing shortly. There was a deathly hush all through the cabin and nobody spoke. The atmosphere was one of suppressed fear, not panic. As the plane began to descend once more, on one of those never ending spirals, there was a sharp crack and a big flash, and the right side of the plane was struck by lightning. This prompted an end to the silence and the passengers distress became both audible and fearful. The lights of the cabin were flickering and, so, the locked in cabin crew could do nothing to comfort anyone in shock. I thought that the woman sitting next to me was having a heart attack, but it was a panic attack, and I gently took her trembling hand and held it in mine, told her we would breathe together and that all would be OK. Lightning flashed, rain came, the whine of the engines and the turbulence reached a crescendo. Then the sun came out the Captain advised we would be landing in five minutes. It was a bumpy and very hard landing, the worst that I had ever experienced; but as the plane screeched and skidded and lurched onto the runway, it just felt like the best ever. We landed safely, and I had a tear in each of my eyes.

People say that your life flashes in front of you when you are in mortal danger, well maybe that’s true, but I had faith. I was determined that I wasn’t going to die on SAS flight: SK 4676, and asked Spirit to help us all safely down.

As I left the flight the cabin crew had already left the aircraft and people were saying that they would never fly again!

However I was just a sandwich away from my ongoing flight, and Trondheim was beckoning. Thank you Spirit, for one minute there I thought my time on this Earth was finally up!

Church’s first 15 THE NUMBER 15 played a special role in a novel afternoon of fund raising for members of the Albir Church of England, successfully raising 300 euros for the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy.

‘Fifteens 4 Fundraising’ took place last Saturday at the home of Geoff and Elaine Mitchell with guests quick to realise the importance of the figure.

At 15.00 hours, 15 members of the congregation met to enjoy 15 different tapas; a 15 question ‘quirky quiz’; and a raffle with 15 prizes...all for 15€.

And the raffle prizes included a ‘menu del dia’ for two at the Gastrocomic Restaurant in Albir and the Deja Vu Restaurant in Alfaz del Pi. Fund raising is important to the chaplaincy because it is the only source of income other than the generosity of members and friends.

The Albir congregation holds services at the Norwegian Seamen’s Church on Carrer Mart every Sunday and there is another service of Holy Communion at the Forum Mare Nostrum in Alfaz on Thursdays at 11am.

The Church of England on the Costa Blanca has seven churches and the information about their location and times of services can be found at the website www.costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy. org. Walking wizard

HELP OF Denia and the Marina Alta is buying a ‘Walk Aide’ to help patients get back on their feet after life-saving treatment.

by Jack Troughton The valuable piece of equipment will be placed in the La Pedrera Hospital’s physiotherapy department in Denia and will help with the rehabilitation of patients who have suffered from damage caused by brain tumours or other potentially life threatening diseases.

The Aide is placed around the leg and sends out signals triggering the patient to lift and move the limb, helping them regain the ability to walk again.

The equipment is being purchased with part of a 5,000€ donation from Cancer Care Javea, presented at the Cancer Care Boutique.

A HELP spokeswoman said both charities raised funds at their charity shops, selling items given by the public “and it is so gratifying when charities pull together in this way for the benefit of all.”

It´s been revealed that pipes with traces of cannabis were discovered in William Shakespeare’s garden in Stratford-uponAvon, and also traces of cocaine were found nearby. Interesting fact is that coca leaves and marijuana were smoked as ‘tobacco’ during Elizabethan times.

The question therefore is; were Drake, Raleigh and Will out their brains whilst his plays were being performed at Queen Elizabeth´s Court?

Will Wilder stay in the wilderness?

A publication in America called ´Aint it Cool News´ is suggesting Steven Spielberg is hot on the heels of Gene Wilder to try and entice him out of retirement with a role in two separate movies.

This rumour gives me a chance to talk about an unsung hero of comedy acting, a man who turned 82 a couple of months ago. His career, movies-wise, began in earnest in a film called ´The Producers´ in 1968 that was panned by the critics at the time, but went on to become, and remains, a cult classic.

He was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and aged 8, after seeing his sister in a school play, decided he wanted to become an actor. He studied drama at the University of Iowa, and in the mid 1950´s was granted a place at the Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol. The Producers was written and directed by Mel Brooks and Wilder went on to star in several more of his films including the gloriously funny ´Blazing Saddles´ and ´Young Frankenstein.´ One of the films Spielberg could be tracking Wilder down to play in is Roald Dahl´s ´BFG´ (Big Friendly Giant), and he might well be tempted as one of his most spectacular roles was in Dahl´s ´Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory´ in 1971 when he mesmerised cinema-goers with his sublime portrayal of the rather bizarre Willy Wonka.

The other movie Spielberg might have Wilder in mind for is ´Ready Player Alice Cooper has set up a new band called The One,´ a sci-fi story set in 2044 with the main plotline centred around the hunt for Hollywood Vampires that will include muso´s from bands like Aerosmith and Guns ´n Roses as a virtual Easter Egg that lies concealed within one of thousands of other virtual well as Johnny Depp on guitar. Johnny arrived in worlds, pretty mad huh?, and seriously ideal for today’s hero Gene Wilder.

LA in his teens as a guitarist in a rock band, but A clear insight into the man´s character came in 2005 when he described drifted off into acting. The Hollywood Vampires himself religion-wise as Jewish-Buddhist-Atheist! will play in LA as well as Brazil´s ´Rock in Rio´

Frozen Facebook Dear Aunty, My Face Book page has suddenly frozen. I am unable to close it , I am unable to use the panel on the left, ie. to read, or send e-mails, I can’t even close it down. I am using Internet Explorer. Fortunately I was able to switch to Google Chrome, which has allowed me to send this e-mail. Hope you can help again. Regards, Tom Aunty says: I am slightly confused. You say your Facebook page has frozen, but then you say you use it to send emails. I am not too sure if you can read and send emails via Facebook. And as far as I am are, Facebook does not have a panel on the left to read or send emails.

Private messages yes, but not emails. However I see you are on Hotmail for your emails. Do you mean you are using Internet Explorer to read your Hotmails in Outlook?

And Outlook on Internet Explorer is freezing.Well, this may be down to an addon in IE that is causing problems.

So you will have to go into the IE addon options and try and find an addon that is causing the problem. But you already have found another solution - use Google Chrome instead of IE. Response: Hi Aunty, sorry for the confusion. Facebook doesn’t have a panel, you are right. I didn’t explain it very well, and now that you mention it, I am almost certain it was an Addon which was causing the problem. I continued to use Chrome, and was able to use the Internet as usual.

Plain text emails Dear Aunty, I hope you can help with this problem on my PC. I’m using Outlook 2003 with Windows 8, My emails open normally but when my wife tries to open hers it opens in plain text and not HTML which is very annoying. I have tried to fix this problem by switching of AVG antivirus to no avail and checked the settings in Mail Format which is set on HTML. I also deleted her account then set up a new account and still they open in plain text. Any suggestions?

Aunty says: There are two reasons why this may be happening. Firstly, check your settings in Outlook may be saying to convert to text. Change this in Tools > Trust Center > Email Security > uncheck ‘read all messages as plain text’. Next look at the AVG settings. It may be that AVG is scanning the email and is attaching a “no virus ....” text message at the end. You can in the AVG options disabled this notification.

Past continuous or Imperfect tense As we continue with our look at the past continuous or imperfect tense, we only have one piece of business left to do as far as putting it together goes, and that is to look at the only three irregular verbs. Yes, I did say three because that’s how few there are. In fact, I think I am correct in saying that this tense is the one with the fewest irregular verbs in the whole Spanish language.

Our three verbs are SER, IR and VER, so let’s look at SER first.

ERA ÉRAMOS ERAS ÉRAIS ERA ERAN When would we use this verb in this way? Well, first of all to give a description of a person or a scene – “El hombre era alto”; (the man was tall) “Las casas eran muy pequeñas” (the houses were very small) “¿eras un buen estudiante?” (Were you a good student?). Another common use of SER is when describing a number of people

as in the phrase “Éramos diez personas en la clase” (There were ten of us in the class). In addition we use this form of SER to talk about someone’s job in the past: “Yo era contable y mi marido era electricista” (I was an accountant and my husband was an electrician).

Our second irregular verb is IR and it goes like this: IBA ÍBAMOS IBAS ÍBAIS IBA íBAN Here are some example sentences.

Notice that the actual words of the translations can vary, but the sense is the same. “Yo iba a clase todos los días” (I used to go (went) to class every day). “El autobus iba a Barcelona los sábados” (The bus used to go (went) to Barcelona on Saturdays). We can also use this form as a past tense version of “voy a” etc. (I’m going to) to express intention. “Voy a hablar con mi marido” (I’m going to talk to my husband). “Iba a hablar con mi marido”

This last type of statement contains the implication that in the end I didn’t do whatever it was (I was going to talk to my husband … but in the end I didn’t).

Another example of this is when someone you were going to phone, phones you first and you say “Te iba a llamar” (I was going to phone you).

Finally we have the verb VER which is hardly irregular at all really. If it were entirely regular it would be “vía, vías, vía (building the endings onto the root “v”) but for some reason we leave the extra “e” in, which gives us: VEÍA VEÍAMOS VEÍAS VEÍAIS VEÍA VEÍAN And that is as irregular as this past tense gets, which I think is pretty good.

Here’s a sentence, admittedly not a terribly interesting one, which uses all three verbs. “Cuando yo era niña, no veía mucha tele, sino iba a jugar en el parque con mis amigas.”

Taylor Trophy Winners at Javea!

After six weeks of enjoyable competitive bowling under the floodlights at Javea Green bowls club, the Taylor Trophy Competition came down to the very last games.

If Taylor Made could beat North and South they could take the title, but Monday Night Takeaway only needed a draw against the 6 Amigos who were propping up the table, to become Champions.

However if they both slipped up then BBC Bandits could sneak into second place providing they beat Top of the Milk. The scene was set for a pulsating finish, who would win and take the prizes, well actually nobody!!

The top three teams all got beaten, so the final league table revealed the Monday Night Takeaway of Chris Evans, Clive English, Jonathan Barr, Jenny Rich, Maureen Barrie and Bill Barrie as deserved Champions.

The runners up were Taylor Made, with North and South just pipping the BBC Bandits to third place on shot difference. Huge congratulations to Chris Evans for a splendidly organised competition.

Benitachell Bowls Club: “The Great Paella Bake Off” Bowls Club prides itself on it’s social side as well as it’s bowling and our “Paella Bake Off” was no exception. Seven chefs (all BBC members) pitted their skills against each other to be crowned Top Chef. After a very closely run contest , judged by Dirk Reinhardt from Benitachell Ayuntamiento, the trophy went to Rod Warnes, pictured above cooking his prize winning Paella. Many members enjoyed a fabulous evening of good food, wine anddancing with music provided by Barry Peters.

CBBA NORTHERN SUMMER LEAGUE The top of the table clash between the BBC Panthers and Javea Green Sharks saw some excellent bowling with the Sharks edging the

result with 6 game to 5 and a draw plus the overall shot difference of 8 to win the match 15 points to eleven.

Both teams go into the final match with the Panthers away to Javea Jets, 15 points clear of the Sharks who are away to El Cid. The Panthers need only 12 points to win the league minus any points that the Sharks drop in their last match.

Our Cougars were away to El Cid where they picked up a good 16 points to ten to remain in third place in the league with their last match at home to Bonelba on Monday 17th August.

Pego Golf Society “singles stableford competition”

Oliva Nova golf course Tuesday 18th of August 2015. We were promised rain today by the weather man, and at 14.30 we had a huge deluge of rain, but that was exactly one hour after we had finished our weekly golf at Oliva Nova by Pego Golf Society. Today we played a Singles Stableford Competition, and there was plenty good golf on offer.

The course was in good condition, with good greens, and both greens and fairways running fairly fast. We had four guests today, and we were delighted with this, and they were Martin Livesey, Chris Anderson, Simon Waldron and Mark Caldwell. We had a guest prize, and this was won by Chris Anderson with 38 points playing off 5 handicap. So there were 34 players today and the results were as follows:Division 1 Winners: Nigel Siddal with 40 Points playing off 14.9, Shaun O’Gorman with 39 Points playing off 5.00, Russ Peters with 37 Points playing off 13.6, Malcolm Cannon with 35 Points playing off 12.4 Division 2 Winners: Graham Haslam, with 38 Points playing off 24.2, Alan Simpson, with 36 Points playing off 24.4, Trini Sutherland, with 34 Points playing off 25.3 Rob Westlands, with 31 Points playing off 18.8, Well played gentlemen.

The PGA Championship concludes the Majors for 2015

And we now know who won the Major Wager.

By Tony Myles THE MASTERS, the first event of each Golf year, is always staged at Augusta and this spectacular course was the launch pad for the Player of the Year - Jordan Spieth who collected his first Major trophy, winning by four strokes ahead of Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose.

Round two was the US Open which this year was hosted at Chambers Bay and once again saw Jordan holding off Louis Oosthuizen and Dustin Johnson by one shot to collect his second Major and spark speculation that maybe he could go on and win the full set.

Then across the pond for the annual links based OPEN which was back at St Andrews. It was tough and the weather as always played a significant role forcing the match into a fifth day to be concluded on the Monday. It was a game of good news and bad news. The good news was for Zach Johnson who survived the play-off against Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman. It was also good news for all the Monday spectators who were able to view the final day for a mere £10. The bad news was largely for Jordan who needed four putts on a par three and in doing so sunk his chances of collecting the Claret Jug. The Grand Final PGA Championship was tough. It was based at Whistling Straits alongside Lake Michigan and where the organisers could only provide a rough estimate of the number of bunkers - somewhere around 1000. The ever

controversial John Daly had watched three of tee shots slice into the lake before playing safe and scoring a 10 but not before he had sent his club to the same watery destination.

Others finding it equally hard included Tiger Woods who once again failed to continue into the weekend. Also popular with the Major Wagerers and taking no part after Friday was Ian Poulter, Shane Lowry and OPEN winner - Zach Johnson!

So who will be joining Campbell with their partner for a round at La Sella and lunch?

It was all very close but there was a clear winner.

In third place was Ann Gibson with an impressive 1538.9 points.

Second and even closer was Ian Evans who secured 1573.75 points But the overall winner of the Campbell Lamont Major Wager 2015 is GEORGE BRADDICK. George scored 1592.5.

Toyota Auris Tourer Hybrid HYBRIDS ARE all very well but they’re generally smaller than traditional cars and therefore less user-friendly. Well, at least that used to be the case with the likes of the Honda CR-Z. THE LARGEST was a hatchback, either a Toyota Prius or the more luxurious Lexus CT200h. No estates. Well, not until Toyota launched the new Auris Hybrid Tourer, which provides the environmentally conscious with a well sized, capable vehicle and also performance.

Things have really moved on since I drove a hybrid a year ago. My first acquaintance with the striking island blue estate is at night. It’s always more of a challenge to drive a car you’re unfamiliar with when it’s dark, for obvious reasons.

A click of the keyfob and I’m inside. The delivery driver was fairly short by all accounts as my knees are around my neck as I sit in the driver’s seat. It’s easy to adjust. In common with other hybrids I am instantly struck by a feeling of fear as I rummage around for the ignition and even though I push the button start on the right of the steering wheel, there is an unnerving silence.

The automatic box does not look very substantial but on engaging the reverse function it quietly moves backwards.

There is an electric parking brake and a traditional one; the first car I have come across with two. The dashboard looks a bit boxy especially where the sat nav is located; it looks like an afterthought. Over time the driver does become more used to it, though.

It’s a large car, not dissimilar to the Ford Focus estate in terms of styling. Head on, it’s attractive and the front looks striking and well designed. The large panoramic glass roof that stretches from the front to the back of the vehicle has

an electric cover and this, in common with those found in Peugeots, is a winning formula. It makes the cabin much lighter when the sun does decide to show its face.

With my growing family we’re having to make use of every bit of space our Victorian terrace house has to offer and so I have cleared the loft to make way for a more imaginative use of this space; office come bedroom. Needless to say I have a great deal of rubbish to take to the tip including old bits of wood and plasterboard and a vacuum cleaner. The cavernous boot swallows it all with ease and a roof box from roofcarriers. co.uk is also a great help. Although I have to push down two of the rear seats to make way for this large load, it is so easy to do; you simply pull a lever on the right of the boot.

Removing the security cover in the boot does prove a little more awkward.
