La Vuelta in Torrevieja
by Keith Nicol ANTICIPATION IS growing as the riders from La Vuelta get another day closer to Torrevieja. Stage Eight tomorrow, Saturday takes the riders into Murcia followed by a historic start to the Ninth Stage which starts on Torrevieja’s seafront at 13.34pm on Sunday afternoon. The riders will have a casual ride along Torrevieja’s coast, before finally bursting into action 8.5km from the start, which is at the Old Man of the Sea statue. More than 190 riders are racing this year with the top
dozen all in with a realistic chance of victory. As stage six started, Tom Dumoulin was leading on 17h 09’ 06’’, closely followed by Johan Esteban Chaves Rubio just one second adrift. Two Irish riders, Nicolas Roche and Daniel Martin and third and fourth respectively followed by the first two Spanish riders Alejandro Valverde Belmont and Daniel Moreno Fernandez. 35 second behind the leader it’s Tour de France double champion Chris Froome from Team Sky,
the leading team, with Chris aiming to try and be only the third rider in history to do the double and win the Tour de France and La Vuelta in the same season. Stage Nine leaves the Torrevieja seafront at 13.34 and follows the coast to the N332, reaching Guardamar de Segura. N 332 about nine minutes later with the teams jockeying for position and ready to race along the N332 few minutes later. Stage nine is 168.3 km long and finishes in Cumbre de Sol.
