FOR MOST observers, it’s been plenty of time for any new organisation to find their feet. Apart from the typical squabbling along party political lines, International residents have been asking questions as to what is next for Torrevieja and the way the city is managed? After almost 100 days in power, members of the International community are wondering what is happening about certain functions and projects in the city. Residents and visitors just want an update, and although work may be progressing in the background, the clock is ticking and the natives are becoming restless.

Of the questions asked of RTN by concerned citizens, as we went to press we still have not received any updates from the Town Hall on such important matters as the widening of the N332, the movement of the Friday Market, cycle routes, free bus passes, direct bus route to Alicante RENFE station, future of the relaxation spa, use of the International Music Conservatory, construction of the Youth Arts and Performance Centre or the Foreign Residents Office, to name but a few.

A RALLY will be held at noon today, September 4th, opposite the Town Hall. It’s been called by FAPA Gabriel Miró, part of the parents and students of Torrevieja and Alicante. It’s in response to 4 Days Oct 13 - 16 & Nov 4 - 7 a meeting that the Mayor called on Monday at which several representatives of the FAPA Gabriel Miró, attended along with members from AMAPAS of Torrevieja. The meeting was to resolve once and for all the problem of the “free” school buses, who would have to pay for them, who would not, what does three kilometres away from school really mean and if parents would have to pre-pay for bussing and hope to receive a refund at the end of the academic year.

However, according to their representatives, Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon would not allow the members access to the room of the president of FAPA, Ramon Lopez Cabrera, only wishing to talk to four mothers who had taken part in the Council Meeting last Thursday. Thus the mothers refused to meet with the Mayor citing that the attitude by the mayor was what they considered undemocratic. Therefore, a rally has been called for today, opposite the town hall under the motto ““Por un transporte subvencionado desde el primer día : For subsidised transport from day one”. Torrevieja’s Mayor and deputies

ONE OF the questions constantly brought up at local meetings of International interest, is not just about why the city still does not have a Foreign Residents Office but who is actually in charge of what in local council.

Apart from visiting the second floor of the town hall in person or personally telephoning the town hall, some appointments to meet anyone in authority have to be done through the PROP office. Email addresses have not been provided by the new government for any direct contact with councillors.

Migrant found wrapped round car engine INCREASINGLY DESPERATE attempts are being made by migrants trying to get into mainland Europe as a man is discovered under the bonnet of a car in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

by Jeanette Rice IN WHAT is being described as the biggest refugee crisis since World War II, with thousands also fleeing from Syria into Hungary, European countries are finding themselves in the difficult situation of how to deal with such numbers.

The Guardia Civil in Ceuta were carrying out a roadside inspection on vehicles when the discovery of the man stuffed behind the car’s engine was made. The officers reported that the man was suffering from severe dehydration and lack of oxygen.

Another man was then discovered in the same vehicle hiding under the car’s back seats also suffering from dehydration and lack of oxygen.

It is believed that both men are originally from Guinea and were being driven by a Moroccan national and a passenger who were both arrested at the scene.

The two migrants were taken to a local

hospital for treatment before being interviewed by the Guardia Civil.

The European Union announced that they will hold emergency talks on 14th September to discuss how to deal with the current crisis as Austria has expanded checks on lorries near its eastern borders following the discovery of 71 dead migrants in a lorry last week.

The checks which began on Sunday night in Austria immediately found migrants trying to gain access by hiding in vehicles as figures for July were released showing that for the first time numbers of migrants reaching the EU borders had topped 100,000, which was three times the figures recorded in the previous July.

As reported in recent weeks migrants are attempting an almost “suicide mission” in desperation to get to mainland Europe with hundreds drowning in the Mediterranean seas travelling from Libya.

In Hungary queues could be seen for miles and security personnel searched each vehicle as it crossed the border in Nickelsdorf.

Hungary has been condemned by other European countries such as France with Laurent Fabius, Foreign Minister, saying “Hungary is flouting the common values

of Europe”.

The UN refugee spokesperson, Baba Baloch has also criticised the Hungarian government saying “the authorities have gone to their public and tried to vilify the refugees, portraying an image that the migrants do not deserve international protection”.

French train attacker’s home searched

Ayoub El-Khazzani escorted into court

by Jeanette Rice SPANISH POLICE raided a flat in the early hours of Tuesday morning where the French train attacker Ayoub El-Khazzani had lived with his family.

The apartment, in Algeciras, was the Spanish home for the attacker along with his parents and his sister. All family members were taken for questioning after the officers had completed their search and removed evidence to nearby vehicles.

The raid, which started in the early hours concluded at around 11am following a request made by French investigators.

The Spanish authorities have been criticised for not conducting the search immedi-

ately after the terrorist attack on the French train, when the details of who the captured suspect was were released.

Ayoub El-Khazzani’s father said that he could not believe that his son was a terrorist although he had not spoken with him since he left Algeciras in 2014. “I wasn’t on the train, but I honestly do not think my son is capable of what they are saying he has done”, he said.

The police raid on the property coincided with a visit being made by Spain’s defence and interior ministers to Rabat where they were due to talk with their Moroccan counterparts about how to increase their efforts to stop Islamist militancy.

Tragic images

POWERFUL IMAGES are flooding the social networks and television screens showing the human element in the current migration crisis. A small boy was discovered washed up on the beach in the coastal town of Bodrum in Turkey and pictures of the tragedy were shared around the world.

The boy, aged 3, was one of 12 Syrian refugees found dead after they drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean on two boats bound for the Greek island of Kos, The tragic images serve as a stark reminder of the desperate situation that these families have found themselves in, fleeing from their war-torn country, as European governments increasingly feel the pressure to act immediately to help the migrants and stop any further deaths occurring.

Murder suspect flies to Spain DAVE MAHON, accused of murdering Dean Fitzpatrick in May 2013, flew into Malaga on Tuesday morning with his wife Audrey Fitzpatrick.

by Jeanette Rice DESPITE THE Garda in Dublin fearing Mr Mahon will not return for his trial local magistrates allowed him to travel to Spain under strict conditions.

Dave Mahon, aged 44, is accused of murdering the brother of missing teenager Amy Fitzpatrick. Amy went missing in Spain on New Years Day in 2008 and has not been seen since.

In what appears to be a very complex case Mr Mahon flew into Malaga, where he had previously lived with Amy, Dean and their mother Audrey saying that they had returned in an attempt to find Audrey’s daughter.

Mr Mahon told a local reporter at the airport that he did not know why the Garda tried to block his trip to Spain which is intended as a mission to find missing Amy. Following Amy’s disappearance the family relocated to Ireland, and although Amy was missing and Mr Mahon had been accused of Amy’s brothers murder, their mother Audrey

Fitzpatrick and Mr Mahon married recently.

The trial is scheduled for April next year and the accused, who has been out on bail, was granted a two week visit to Spain with variations being made to his signing on conditions until he is due to return to Dublin on September 15th.

Detectives in charge of the murder investigation had pleaded with the courts not to grant the special bail conditions as they believed Mr Mahon was a flight risk but the defence counsel stated that previously Mr Mahon had returned to Dublin even though he knew he was accused of murder and this showed his honest intentions.

Arriving on the early morning flight to Malaga Mr Mahon said to the local reporter “this is the first time we have travelled since getting married, but the real purpose of the visit is to find Amy. We have 5,000 flyers that we will be giving out to remind people that Amy is still missing”.

Kidnapped man freed

POLICE IN Spain freed a kidnapped Spaniard on Tuesday who was being held with a ransom demand of 35,000€ and had been a hostage for six days.The police arrested ten French nationals in a mountain town of Benahavis near Marbella where the 27 year old was being held.

Family members reported that the 27 year old was kidnapped in Mijas and that they had received a ransom demand. Officers also found fake euro notes and marijuana at the villa and have charged the 10 French nationals with kidnapping, drug trafficking and membership of an organised crime group.

BENIDORM CLOSED its August books showing a 93.7% hotel occupancy. The best recorded figures since 2007 when figures reached 96%. HOSBEC, who released the figures detailed domestic tourism was responsible for approximately 50% with British holidaymakers 32.7%.

AN EXPLOSION in northern Spain has killed six and left several injured after a blast at a firework factory on Monday afternoon.

Police and fire fighters searched the area for reports of missing people but were hampered by several smaller blasts as any remaining explosives ignited.

The explosion happened at the Pirotecnia Zaragozana factory in the town of Pinseque as locals reported a dense plume of white smoke shoot into the air that could be seen for miles immediately following the blast.

A local spokesperson said the dead were four men and two women who were linked to the factory.

Two of the six currently receiving hospital treatment in the nearby hospital of Zaragoza are said to be in a critical condition.

The Zaragoza town hall declared a day of mourning and the mayor asked for everyone to gather for a minutes silence.

Police have begun an investigation into the cause of the explosion although their preliminary searches were also hampered by the smaller blasts and fires after the main explosion.

Carrefour’s 5 euro day in court

by Keith Nicol SUPERMARKET GIANT Carrefour has been accused of being heavy handed after a couple faces a daunting court experience over a 5€ note.

The pensioners went shopping at the Torrevieja branch in May and ran up a bill of more than 100€. However, when they paid in cash and loyalty coupons at the till it was discovered a 5€ note was a forgery.

The couple, long time Carrefour shoppers who hold a loyalty card, immediately paid with a genuine note but now find themselves caught up in a legal nightmare and must attend court on 14th September.

And approached by the husband and wife to help and to warn others of an apparent sledgehammer company policy, RTN has contacted Carrefour with a series of questions over the last six weeks. To date no reply has come from the company.

The couple’s problem started at checkout. The cashier noticed the note in question appeared to be a fake and called a supervisor. She checked with a special pen, announced it was a forgery and said the store would confiscate it and make a report.

After handing over legal tender, the wife was led away by a security guard but they were convinced there was no problem – it was an honest mistake and they had been given the fake note in change somewhere else.

However, the husband was allegedly barred from going with his wife and the

Guardia Civil were called. The woman does not speak Spanish and did not understand what was being said and maintains no translator was offered.

She was held an hour and asked to sign a document, which again she did not fully understand, before being released.

It got worse. They had paid their bill in full and thought a bad experience was behind them. Next a letter came in the post – the Carrefour security guard had issued a ‘denuncia’ – and it said the woman must appear in court.

The couple has approached their own lawyers. The solicitors could not believe the situation but underlined the couple must honour the summons - the 5€ note now bringing the additional burden of legal fees and a possible fine.

RTN has contacted Carrefour Torrevieja directly but has been unable to see the manager, who is now on holiday – Carrefour’s Madrid and French press offices and customer service departments have not replied to emails.

The simple questions asked were: “Is it company policy that all customers who try to pay with a counterfeit banknote will be denounced and have to appear in court?” and “If it is a mistake, will Carrefour issue an apology and take away the denuncia?”

However, after many emails over the space of six weeks, Carrefour has not answered the questions and the court date approaches.

However, the same week RTN first

contacted Carrefour it was announced by the police in Murcia that more than 200,000€ of new counterfeit banknotes notes are circulating in Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Murcia.

RTN further asks the supermarket: “Will you prosecute everyone who tries to pay with a false banknote? Even though these are probably English tourists who do not use Euros? What judgement does Carrefour expect in the courts? What press coverage does Carrefour expect to receive for prosecuting a pensioner over a genuine mistake, over a fake banknote in a foreign currency? Does Carrefour expect every foreigner and local resident to use a special pen to detect if a banknote is fake or not before they shop in Carrefour?

Or else they run the risk of ending up in court?”

With Carrefour seemingly unwilling to make any statement, RTN asked about company policy over counterfeit banknotes with supermarket rival Alcampo.

A spokesman for Alcampo in Madrid said that common sense would prevail and if it looked like an honest mistake, then the store would just keep the banknote, have the customer sign a letter, and the matter would be closed.

Meanwhile Carrefour has lost customers. The couple, friends and neighbours will never shop there again. The husband and wife have put their holiday home on the market and will return to England for good once the matter is finally settled.

Torrevieja’s Damian Aguero on Champions League list

ONE OF Torrevieja few football success stories is Damian Aguero.

Damian left Torrevieja to join Atletico Madrid at the age of 15 and yesterday it was made official that he has been included on the list of players registered to participate in the UEFA Champions League 2015/16. Although Damian has yet to play his full debut for the Atletico’s first time, it’s a certain sign that his name is in the recogning for this to happen this season in domestic competition.

In the list the club registered, Torrevejense Damian Aguero will wear number 33 to participate in Europe’s football showpiece. UEFA already has the list of Atletico players who will participate in the Champions League in the 2015/16 season.

The process consists of two lists. The first or ‘list A’ consists of the 23 members of the first group. The second list or ‘List B’ consists of players from the lower categories, which may enter the call in case of injury or suspension of any of the 23 players of the first team.

Damian will also be participating in the UEFA Young League competition, which is developed parallel with the Champions League and is for players Under 19 with their first games matching those of the senior teams, for the first group stages. This is a new step in the career of Aguero, who last week renewed his contract with the club, and on Wednesday was shown the prize for his hard work, effort, and of course talent, shown during the four seasons that he has been playing in the team of the Manzanares.

Continued from front page CULTURE: AFTER the poor offerings for July and August plus the cancelling of concerts, films at the library and the Summer Parade, a cultural program has not been provided for the month of September or beyond. Various museums are closed, either temporarily or on a permanent basis and no word has been forthcoming as to the future of the present or future Semana Santa Museum.

La Siesta Park: no word at all about this since they stopped construction.

OARI: one of the big flags waved by the PSOE was their planned expansion of the Foreign Residents Office. To date, the desk in the Tourist Office remains empty and no word as what the government plans to do to connect with the city’s foreign residents, the clubs, the associations or for anyone looking for help or assistance. As a groundbreaking program for Spain when it was first introduced, Torrevieja’s International community have effectively been locked out; for the moment at least.

Bus Passes: will Torrevieja’s Town Hall continue to offer this unique free bus service, remains a mystery.

Bus to Alicante RENFE: the Mayor of Alicante still wonders why Torrevieja have not been in touch with him to plan for a direct link between the cities.

Municipal Sports: nothing has yet been announced about children applying for the municipal sports

teams or for adult activities, such as the Yoga classes at the Virgen del Carmen and if these will remain to be free for pensioners, or not.

The information chain: starting with the city’s corporate website; www.torrevieja.es, the most basic pages, which most professional webmasters would fill with relevant data on day one, are still missing after two months of being in power. In the words of Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music: ‘Let’s start at the very beginning; a very good place to start,” and on entering the municipal website one has the options of Información y contacto (information and contacts) with takes one to Directorio (Directory) and Organización (Organisation). As with previous actions the workers will refuse to perform their duties between 4.30am to 7.30am and again 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

It is thought that Easyjet and Vuelling passengers will be the most affected in Madrid but with other forms of transport, such as the proposed rail workers strike in Spain not working at full capacity, travellers can expect a difficult month.

The last baggage handlers protest didn’t have much affect on travellers after the government borough in a new law stating a minimum service must be provided. However the Spanish military had to be called in during the last air traffic controller strike as staff began calling in sick on mass.

With complications for travellers occurring throughout Europe, particularly at the port of Calais and the Euro tunnel, it seems that although the summer is over the unrest is not.

SEBASTIAN TAMMINEN, aged 24 from Sweden woke up from a heavy night drinking in Magaluf with a permanent reminder of his holiday, Justin Biebers name tattooed on his bottom!

Sebastian said “me and my friends were out drinking and maybe had a bit too much, they had this great idea of getting tattoos, with each of them having a diamond tattooed on one foot but for some reason I ended up with the words Justin Bieber on my bottom, to be honest its all a bit blurred”.

When Sebastian posted the picture on Instagram the photo went viral although he did say that his girlfriend was not impressed.

Torrevieja’s rain gauge

OVER THE summer months, Torrevieja has had less than one hour of rainfall.

by Keith Nicol AS FROM Tuesday September 1st, the guesswork of how much rain the city actually receives has moved to official status, as Torrevieja now has has an authorised rain gauge from the State Meteorological Agency. The new rain gauge will be managed by the Mastral Project.

The new device will measure rainfall occurring in the city and will provide official data, which will allow, for example, be valid in such instances as insurance incidents, which until now Insurance companies had to consult the official rainfall gauge in Rojales, as the closest official rain gauge to Torrevieja. Data will be collected daily and is available on the website of

Mastral Project. In addition, the information obtained will be included in the databases of the State Meteorological Agency.

It should be noted that Torrevieja has collected temperature and rainfall data from 1927 to 2010, the date on which the Mastral Project was first allowed to register as a collector of such data. This new facility is designed to give better continuity to the climate records of the city. The Mastral Project team wished to emphasize the importance of Torrevieja as an official data collection point and the importance if the fact that they have been entrusted with this project from the AEMET, which provides meteorology very important

support to government agencies.

The weather forecast over the coming days will possibly provide the new gauge with their first measurement for their rain gauge.

The first week of September brings with it very changeable weather and the possibility of rain that could be intense, especially over the weekend, possibly accompanied by storms. Moreover, temperatures are expected to drop significantly.

HAVING READ the story about the excessive gas bill in edition 827, I thought that this situation was exactly what the consumer associations were established for.

The agent who was representing the gas company had a responsibility to make sure that the lady was put on to the correct tariff for her circumstances. The lady should take her problem to her local O.M.I.C. (Oficina Municipal de Informacion al Consumidor) office which is probably in her town hall. A letter explaining the problem should be in Spanish along with other documents such as the contract and the high bills. Make it clear in the letter that you want the difference paid back between the normal tariff and the holiday tariff.

I have submitted a complaint about a garage using the Freetranslate.com website in which you can type your letter in English and the Spanish version will appear on the right hand side of the page. The beauty of this is that you have the English version and the Spanish one on the same piece of paper for reference.

I would suggest that the lady produces the documents first and then makes enquiries at the Algorfa town hall to find out if there is an office there or if not which one covers her area.

WHAT A crass letter by Mr Spurrier in edition 827. My wife and I moved to Spain on retirement having worked all our lives including in my case 35 years in the Armed Forces. We paid all our NI payments and continue to pay tax to UK on my Military pension which is taxed at source.

We did not cease to be British when we moved here and the policies of the Govt. affect us and our family in UK .

We are British Citizens.

We are taxpayers.

We have earned the right to express our opinion via the ballot box. There are many like us in Spain and to be called egoistic and selfish by a very naive person is insulting.

Free school in Spain?

As if the school holidays of 12 weeks are not long enough or expensive enough , the average of 400€ per child is needed just to get back to school!

Books are the first expense where at least 200€ for a set of books that are compulsory in the Comunidad Valenciana have to be purchased! No discounts are given depending on family circumstances.

If you have no transport and walking is out of the question a school bus costs upwards of 30€ per month.

If you don’t want to make 8 trips per day to and from school then lunches have to be paid for which are not far off a menu of the day price (minus beer or wine obviously!!)

Then there are the materials!

Pencils, exercise books, rubbers etc, etc...

Shoes ,clothing, bags on wheels are all an added expense!

These costs are bad enough for one child, imagine having numerous!

There is no such thing as FREE schooling in Spain!

New driving rules involving child passengers WITH ONLY one month to go until the new driving regulations come into force relating to carrying children in vehicles many are still not aware of the rules.

by Jeanette Rice Although many of the changes are merely tweaks on the old regulations with the new rules having been designed to simplify the law and make it easier for parents to understand and adhere to the law.

The most commonly known law relates to height restrictions but there has always been some confusion as to if the age of the child overrules the height.

The law effective from 1st October will be “any child under the height of 1m 35cm must sit in the back of the vehicle. It is forbidden for them to sit in the front unless they are taller than this height, which usually is a child of approximately 12, but it is the height that is the law not the age, so if a child of 15 falls under the height they must sit in the back of the vehicle�.

There is only one exception to this rule. If a car is carrying other smaller children on the back seat in appropriate car seats and there is no room for the older child then they can be placed in the passenger seat but must be in a child seat approved for their age, weight and height. They

cannot simply sit in the passenger seat.

Other clarifications include when a child is travelling in a taxi. A child can travel in the back of a taxi without special seating providing they are only travelling in an urban or city area, so if you are travelling from the airport to Benidorm the child must be appropriately restrained.

When using car seats the law states that they must be assembled and placed as instructed by the manufacturer. It is not obligatory to have a baby sitting in a rearward facing seat although it is an accepted rule. Again there is only one exception to this where air bags are present in the front passenger area it is prohibited to have the chair facing the front and it must be placed so the young child faces away from the windscreen.

In vehicles that have the capacity to carry more than nine passengers, such as mini buses, the person driving is legally obliged to tell all passengers that they must wear their seatbelts. The information must also be visible from each seat using either signs or pictures.

The President of the Youth Associaon “La Comarca” Sergio Ros said that details have been finalised for the Third Conference of Alternative Entertainment: “The ComarCon 2015” to be held in the Municipal Leisure Centre, on 5th and 6th of September.

The event has gained great acceptance among various groups and associations

dedicated to gaming activities, be their video games, board games, virtual reality, manga, Magic, Wharhammer, board games, cosplay, jugger, soft-combat and others and features competitions, workshops, exhibitions, talks, tournaments, free play and a range of alternative activities.

The conference opens their doors for free and this latest edition offers something a little different, when for the first time attendees are being offered the opportunity to camp outside overnight at

ComarCON’15, from Saturday night to Sunday morning. Free camping is offered in the parking lot of the Municipal Leisure Centre. (CMO), however since the reserved site is a car park, they recommend taking a mattress for camping and tents need to be freestanding as it will not be possible to peg the tents into the ground. A thousand people celebrate Associations Night MORE THAN a thousand people turned out on Sunday evening to celebrate the sixth Associations Night.

Last year’s ComarCon 14 attracted thousands of visitors

by Keith Nicol ORGANIZED BY the Department of Citizenship of the City of Torrevieja, the event was held at the Doña Sinforosa Park as a way for the city’s many different clubs and associations to meet up in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately the vast majority of International clubs do not meet over the summer period and thus were not represented.

The event was attended by the Mayor, José Manuel Dolon, accompanied by Victor Ferrández, Councillor for Citizen Participation, as the head of a broad representation of the City councillors, who mingled with the hundreds of people on the festive night.

There are two main reasons why this event

was brought into existence six years ago: to strengthen ties of friendship between all local associations and the other to benefit Torrevieja Food Bank who run the bar with food and drink to raise funds for the NGO. Some of the food sold in the bar was donated by the various participating associations.

Around forty associations and about a thousand people were attended the party.

During the night, along with the eating and drinking, many took to the dance floor to the music of DJ Richi, making sure that everyone was catered for with all styles of music to dance to from waltzes, tangos, boleros, salsa, merengue, rumba, and a little rock’n’roll, for the dance party that lasted until midnight.

Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few’ ON TUESDAY 15th September, at La Siesta Church, the Costa Blanca Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, are marking the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain with a service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving to remember one of the most significant parts of history associated with the Second World War. Winston Churchill remarked after this decisive air battle “ The gratitude of every home in our Island, in the Empire and indeed throughout the World, goes out to the airmen, who undaunted by odds, unwearied in their constant challenge and mortal danger, are turning the tide of World war by their prowess and devotion. Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”. His words truly described a heroic episode that we should never forget.

This special Church Service commences at 11am and is open to anyone who wishes to remember those who gave their lives or were involved in this significant part of history that helped secure the freedoms many of us take for granted today.

Kids and back pain BACK PAIN among children from as young as the age of five is becoming more prevalent primarily due to the weight of school books.

by Keith Nicol ACCORDING TO experts from the Hospital Quirón Torrevieja and Quirón Valencia, one in four students goes to the doctor for back pain, and many other sufferers just try to ignore it.

A mixture of a sedentary lifestyle, too many hours computer gaming or on the mobile phone or tablet, carrying heavy backpacks full of school supplies all leads to poor posture, which is among the most frequent causes of this ailment. Back pain in children and adolescents has become one of the most common reasons for visiting the doctor’s office. According to experts at Hospital Quirón Torrevieja and Quirón Valencia, it is estimated that up to 25% of schoolage children go to the doctor for back problems. “There are many factors influencing the onset of spinal pain,” said Dr. Héctor Rupérez, head of the Unit of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Hospital Quirón Valencia, “the incidents are sedentary, transportation and school supplies plus a lack of postural awareness for certain activities, such as video games consoles and mobile phone use. These and other factors cause a functional overload on a child’s spine. Some of them are complex and difficult to avoid, but others are eas-

ily remedied, such as the correct use of school backpacks and proper posture when sitting in class.”

Choosing the right backpack for transporting school supplies helps avoid overloading the back of our children, but it’s not enough: “we also have to consider the proper use of it,” said Dr. Rupérez. On the choice and use of the backpack he recommended: “Choose a backpack with wide, adjustable straps. The bag width should not exceed the area where you will be supported, ie upper thoracic area. It must also be fitted with adjustment straps for the abdomen. Hang the backpack straps over both shoulders, never resting it on the lower lumbar area. When filling the backpack, try to put things with more weight in the zone that is more in touch with the back.”

The main question that parents have is: “But how much weight can my son or daughter take in their backpack?”

According to Dr. Ramon Fernandez, a specialist in rehabili-

tation medicine Hospital Quirón Torrevieja, “in most cases back pain is not a disease, but a warning of the muscles of the sword that something is not being done well. In Spain we have not specified what is excessive weight, but following the rules of European countries like Germany, Austria or Italy, we can consider that carrying more than 10-15% of body weight can be harmful; so a child who weighs about 40kg, should not take more than 4-6 kg of weight in your backpack. But we must take into account other factors such as high intensity sports or sedentary lifestyle. It is recommended, sitting upright in your chair and bringing to school only the necessary school supplies. In the case of specific pain we must try to make life as normal as possible, without rest, and relieve discomfort with medication. If pain is organic, treatment will depend on the specialist. Finally, if pain stays with the child for more than a day or is suffering repeated traumatic symptoms without a known cause, you should see a specialist.

Sufferers of butterfly skin in Spain to receive their bandaging materials for free

by Patricia Thompson THE MINISTRY of Health and the Regional Government recognise the rights of those affected by Butterfly Skin to have access to essential bandaging materials for free.

After many years and numerous meetings with representatives of the Public Health System, both on a national and regional level, the Butterfly Children Charity (DEBRA Spain) has managed to get the Ministry of Health and the Regional Government to agree to and to finance the bandaging materials necessary for those affected by Butterfly Skin throughout the whole of Spain. The agreement was formalised on 30th July 2015 in a meeting of Inter-Territorial Council of the National Health System at the request of the”Committee of benefits, insurance and financing.”

Thanks to the agreement, those affected by Butterfly Skin can go to their local health centre and receive all the materials essential to treat the disease (dressings, bandages, disinfectants and creams) totally for free. This “rare” disease creates extreme fragility of the skin, even the slightest touch causes the skin to blister leading to open wounds. Unfortunately there is no cure, wound care and protecting the body from further lesions are the only treatments available. In the more severe cases up to 80% of the body can be affected with wounds, some remaining open for months and years. Not having the appropriate materials can aggravate the wounds causing infection and new lesions, sacrificing the survival of those affected. The high financial cost of the materials has normally been the responsibility of the families adding to the burden of the condition so today’s historic agreement ensuring easy access and free dispensing of the essential materials has been revolutionary for all those involved!

Since the recognition of this basic right the Butterfly Children Charity and over 1,000 affected families across Spain have been celebrating! Going forward we will continue to work hard to achieve more of our dreams; the designation of a specialist centre, support for schooling, correct assessments for disability access, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and access to psychological care.

The skin can be so sensitive that the body must be wrapped in gauze to protect it from the mildest friction.

Even the brush of a bed sheet can cause another burnlike blister.Blistering also occurs internally (in the mouth, oesophagus, intestine, airways, urinary tracts and even the inside of the eyelids) leading to further suffering and serious health problems.

Butterfly skin also becomes a disability because people suffering from this condition require intensive daily care from their relatives. “This is a charity project with which we collaborate with the Association of Alzheimer of Torrevieja and the Rotary Club of the town, in its social and solidarity aspect, while the Tourist Board provides promotional support,” remarked Eduardo Dolon. KEY OFFICERS of the Royal British Legion travelled to Viator in Almeria to visit the base of a light infantry brigade and cement plans for a joint parade and Remembrance Service this October.

FOLLOWING AN invitation of the Comandante of the Brigada de la Legion Espana, the Chairman of the Royal British Legion in Spain Nigel Hails, Parade Marshal Neil Pavitt, along with District Administrator Christopher Wyatt visited the headquarters.

They were there to coordinate the parade and service planned for Wednesday 21st October to honour the war dead of both countries.

The visit was also an opportunity to foster a deeper understanding and to cement relationships between a key active service unit – in recent times mainly deployed in a peace-keeping role – and the Royal British Legion’s mission, values and objectives as presented by its Spanish-based members.

The guests were shown every courtesy during their visit and as well as the planning meeting, they paid a

visit the Brigade’s regimental museum and were able to speak with a number of officers of the Legion Espana, due to celebrate its hundred anniversary in 2020.

And they were encouraged by the Comandante’s “obvious desire” for the need for closer cooperation and friendship with people from other countries who had chosen to make a home in Spain.

Campoverde Canine Club ESTABLISHED IN Spain in July 2000, the Campoverde Canine Club is still going strong teaching dogs (and their owners) in all aspects of obedience, with plenty of fun along the way. The new classes will begin very shortly.

Last week the final examinations took place at the training ground of the C.C.C. in Campoverde, with the club sponsored by “Design a Right”.

The results from the Basic Class showed the winner as Colin Chatfield and his little dog Millie, scoring 108.5 marks out of 110. Patience and perseverance works wonders. The Intermediate Class was won by Angus MacTavish and his dog Magnus. The score of 120.1 shows the effort put in by Angus and his best friend. The Advanced Class was a big disappointment showing no passes in this harder and demanding group.

The Agility Class covering a total of ten different obstacles was mastered by “Rebel”, handled by his more than competent owner, Heather Powell. Sometimes it appears that “Rebel” finds that the jumps are all too easy. All jumps were marked on ability and control and to achieve 95 out of 100 marks shows the effort Heather has consistently put into the training exercises. New classes will start very soon.

ARC is looking to home Ben. The charity also has nine puppies aged between 13 to 18 weeks; two other Podencos; and 20 kittens available.

And this week ARC’s charity was opened by the Mayor of Jalon. It is in Calle Valencia, opposite ‘The Cut’ hairdressers, just along the street from Pepe Santos, and near the primary school.

It is open between 10am and 2pm and volunteers are needed to run the shop.

Torrevieja’s La Vuelta attracts a million and a half viewers SUNDAY’S NINTH stage of La Vuelta, attracted an estimated Spanish TV audience of more than one and half million viewers.

by Keith Nicol THE STAGE started from Torrevieja for the first time in the city’s history of the 70th edition of the race. The ninth stage of the Tour ran entirely through the province of Alicante and attracted 14% of television audiences in Spain alone, with the worldwide audience reaching many millions more.

This important sporting event is also broadcast in more than 190 countries, promoting the Costa Blanca and its varied and extraordinary attractions worldwide, as was acknowledged by the President of the Delegation of Alicante, Cesar Sanchez. “Sunday’s stage was undoubtedly one of the best stages of the Tour of Spain 2015 with a major impact in more than 190 countries around the world. The excellent television audience in Spain was around 15% and in some countries reached even 40%,” he said.

With an unprecedented departure from the city of Torrevieja, the stage ran a full 168.3 kilometres through the province of Alicante, ending in Poble Nou de Benitachell. Viewers could see for the first time many of their home towns such as Guardamar del Segura and its dunes, Alicante and Castle of Santa Barbara, Benidorm and its beaches and distinctive

buildings plus Calpe with its impressive Rock of Ifach, and other locations such as Elche, Santa Pola, El Campello, Villajoyosa, Altea, Teulada-Moraira, Javea and Gata de Gorgos.

The president of the provincial government stressed; “this is an exceptional event that we can feel proud off. It’s great to see such commitment to tourism, sports and welfare generated by attracting tourists to our area” and he added that the provincial government: “will continue to work to bring events of this nature to the Costa Blanca and continue building on a worldwide TV audience thus adding more attractions and contributing to job creation.”

Sanchez also appreciated the response of the tens of thousands of people who lined the streets of the Alicante provence, making this a great holiday event. The Costa Blanca Tourist Board did their best to involve citizens and promote tourism in the province. They developed a complete program of activities, which included raffles, a podium on which to take pictures, a virtual simulator and other attractions that received a great response from the public.

just loosened their legs for the first 8.5 kilometres before the flying start took place, the 190 riders passed the spectators in around 12 seconds and were gone on their way. Not great value for money if you’d been paying for it, but for a ‘free’ spectator event, the

atmosphere, fun and enjoyment that echoed through the crowd was well worth the wait. For fans of double Tour de France winner Chris Froome, he was beaten in the last 50 metres into second place by race leader, Dutchman Tom Dumoulin.

Expat Divorce in Spain: Advantages

DEAR LAWYER, we are a married British couple living in Denia, Alicante. Most of our assets and real estate are in Spain, although we have some investments in the UK. We want to get divorced, is it advisable to return to our country to apply for the divorce there, or can we get divorced here? Thank you for your help.

DEAR READERS, thank you for your enquiry.

In principle, and as prescribed in Article 3 of the Council Regulation (EC) No 2201/2003 of 27 November 2003 concerning jurisdiction and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in matrimonial matters and matters of parental responsibility, if both spouses have their habitual residence in Spain, it will be the Spanish courts that will have jurisdiction to decide on the divorce.

Although this rule has some exceptions, ( if you return to your country, or if you have kept domicile in your country for example), normally, it is advisable to file for divorce before the Spanish courts.

In addition, under Article 8 of the COUNCIL REGULATION (EU) No 1259/2010 of 20 December 2010 implementing enhanced cooperation in the area of the law applicable to divorce and legal separation, it is established, that if the spouses had not choosen any law as the applicable one for the divorce, the divorce should be subject to the law of the State: (a) where the spouses are habitually resident at the time the court is held; or, failing that (b) where the spouses were last habitually resident, provided that the period of residence did not end more than 1 year before the court was held, in so far as one of the spouses still resides in that State at the time the court is held; etc.

Therefore, we understand that if you want to apply for a divorce by mutual agreement or consent, it would be easier and advisable, to apply for it in front of the Spanish courts, for various reasons: Proximity, you will not have to deal with the courts of your country of origin where you no longer reside.

Registery. Having goods and assets in Spain, the

Spanish Court’s decision will be directly registrable in the relevant registers, as the Land Registry, etc.

This is important, as sometimes there are serious problems in recognizing foreign divorce judgments in Spain, as their wording, structure, and content are sometimes very different from the Spanish judicial decisions, which can affect the type of tax to be paid, and the possibility being directly registered, etc.

Ease. Under Spanish law it is not necessary to prove a cause or reason for the divorce, and therefore there

is no need not prove the existence of a separation, lack of coexistence, etc., it being enough that one of the spouses wish to get divorced.

Cost. It is very economical, we understand that it would not be necessary to prove the law of your country or nationality, therefore one would not need to provide certificate of laws, thus avoiding much more expensive procedures .

TODAY HERE is a brief resume of what is exactly available in the Market Place for investors and the rates you can expect to receive.

GETTING THE best income possible from your investments is crucial in the current economic climate.

UK Deposit Accounts–Birmingham Midshires offer web based instant access offering 1.6%. This is only for the first year as 1.35% is in the form of a bonus at year-end so then reverts to a very poor rate.The Post Office offers a similar online account with 1.4% but again after 1 year this reverts to only 0.65%. Unless you are willing to tie money up for a number of years the rates offered are still not very good despite Mark Carneys promise that things will improve soon for savers.

Annuities - The rates are around 3% at the moment- the older you are the better rate you get. This does lock you in for life and you give up the capital. Not the best time to purchase in my opinion as rates are low but as a Spanish fiscal resident these have fantastic tax benefits so you should not overlook them entirely.

Spanish Compliant Bonds – Rates vary and depend on the size of investment and currency of investment. Prudential offer a Cautious Fund that is paying around 4.% after charges.

This type of investment is great for people wanting medium to long term income or growth. 5% of capital is allowed to be withdrawn each year penalty free. These offer very good tax benefits but are only available if you are a Spanish Fiscal resident.

Structured Notes – These are very sophisticated investments but can offer income rates of between 5% and 10%. The main risks with these are counterparty, market and the conditional risk. There are lots of issuers of these notes and it is best to discuss with a Financial Adviser before entering to make sure all the conditions are fully understood. The higher the rate offered then usually the more risk is involved.

LOVE WAS certainly in the air this summer, as evidenced by the number of couples tying the knot or renewing their vows on the Costa Blanca. Two such couples were Alan and Katharine plus Eddy and Jean, long time friends, who shared two very special occasions with each other.

by Keith Nicol For Alan and Katherine, their 40th, Ruby Wedding Anniversary fell on August 22nd, while for Eddy and Jean, after knowing each other for 65 years, it was wedding bells.

For Eddy and Jean, their love story is certainly something that a film script might not be out of place, looking at the success of such films as The Exotic Marigold Hotel. First meeting as teenagers, Jean actually fell for Eddy’s younger brother and married when she was only 20 only for tragedy to strike and for him to pass away from Leukaemia in 1966. She remarried but her second husband passed away in 1997. For over thirty years, back in the days when Christmas greetings usually meant signing a card, putting it in an envelope, writing an address, putting a stamp on it and going to the post box, rather than hitting the ‘send’ button, Jean and Eddy had always stayed in touch with their annual newsletters. Having received news from Jean in December 1997 of the passing of her husband, Eddy decided that the time was right for him to pay her a visit and catch up on old times.

Eddy was invited round for dinner, and the former London cabbie decided it was too good an offer to miss up. They caught up with all their important news of what had been happening in each others lives over the last quarter century, Jean with her family, her work as a hairdresser and her hobbies and pastimes, and Eddy with his tales of life as a confirmed bachelor and London Cabbie for fifty years, his love of following his childhood team of QPR, stories of celebrity clients with such famous names as George Best, Adam Faith and countless others and his love of playing football and training in Battersea Park, where he often shared the track with the likes of Olympic greats such as Coe, Ovette and Cram, and where he continued to play competitive football into his fifties.

Over the course of the evening, the wine flowed and Eddy asked Jean if it would be OK if he spent the night in the guest room, as he’d been drinking wine and couldn’t drive home. Jean agreed and Eddy stayed not just the one night but three, and romance blossomed. However, what Jean didn’t reveal at the time was that she’d been plying Eddy with non-alcoholic wine all night so obviously Eddy was just feeling light headed over Jean’s charms.

The couple moved in together shortly thereafter and enjoyed a full and active social life, which included regular cycling trips, visiting their various local clubs and Jean even started to discover an appreciation for the beautiful game, as Eddy was a lifelong season ticket holder at his beloved QPR. A few years later, the couple decided they’d like a change and thought about the possibility of moving to Spain. Word got out among the neighbours that they were thinking of moving and on Boxing Day 2001, they received a knock on the door, with a couple saying they heard they might be moving and if they could have first refusal on the house. A few days later the couple returned once again asking if Jean and Eddy had made any decisions, so after a little thought, Jean and Eddy decided that maybe it was time for a change, sold their house privately to the couple and ended up purchasing a property in what was still the still the quiet village of Quesada, back in July 2002, where they call home. Over the years the couple have been involved with a great number of social activities and clubs, including the Friday 5 O’Clock Club, Euro Club, Quesada Ladies Club and the Torry Army, CD Torrevieja’s International Supporters Club. You can always find them running the club’s office in San Luis on a Wednesday and Friday morning and at the team’s home games.

Which brings us around to this summer. With Eddy’s 80th birthday looming on July 15th, it was Jean who popped the question of marriage to Eddy, he said ‘yes’ and along with Alan and Katherine, they headed down to Gibraltar to be married on Eddy’s birthday. A small celebration was then planned to coincide with Alan and Katherine’s 40th Anniversary on August 22nd, but this soon grew and grew and on the day, dozens of family and friends, joined both couples for Pastor Keith Brown to give a blessing to the four of them. And so, love in sun, continues on the Costa Blanca.

Your New Garden CONGRATULATIONS ON purchasing a property in Spain whether with an established garden or a bare patch of sun baked poor quality soil full of stones waiting to become a garden. Hopefully you have relaxed during the hot summer months leaving the development of the garden to cooler autumn and winter days. With luck within a few weeks you can start on the garden in earnest without collapsing or dehydrating in the heat to which you are not yet acclimatised. In the short term restrict hard work to the hours before eleven am. To set you on your way we highlight some of the most important first things to be done with an entirely new garden.

1. Evaluate the quality of your soil.

Most plants grow best in a fairly rich well draining soil and not in unimproved heavy red clay soils full of rocks, very sandy soils full of stones or solid rock with little top soil on which many new homes are being built.

Clay and sandy soils will need to be improved by adding copious amounts of composts and well rotted manures. Luckily there are Eco-parks in Benissa and La Xara that compost municipal and contract gardeners

waste with sea weed cleared from beaches and sell the finished compost at low prices. But you will need to add dried animal manures for essential nutrients. Fortunately there are a good number of stables around from where you can obtain sacks of horse manure and many agricultural cooperatives sell inexpensive sacks of dried goat or sheep manure.

2. Only improve soils where you need to.

Improving large areas of poor soil is a time consuming, back breaking and expensive task. So improve only those areas of soil where you will be planting things whether individual trees, shrub beds or a vegetable plot. If you have inherited very shallow soil over bedrock it is wise to plant everything in raised beds or large containers.

3. Reduce the risk profile of the garden site.

Improving your soil will certainly help plants to grow but there are other important things to do.

Firstly although most days in Spain are pleasantly warm and sunny we do get days or weeks of cold or scorching winds not liked by many plants. So start out by planting hedging shrubs and trees or building walls to be clad in climbing plants as wind breaks especially where you have no attractive views beyond your boundaries. Secondly only plant low risk plants appropriate to your local climate until you have established a sheltered microclimate in the garden. Then you can plant the more vulnerable subtropical and tropical plants in the warmest and most sheltered corners.

gardens. Most importantly the drought and frost resistances are indicated based on the hottest and coldest weather we have experienced during our twenty five years of gardening in Spain. My well planted garden has survived temperatures from a scorching 47 degrees centigrade down to a minus 15 wind factor night. It has also survived up to six months of drought with minimal watering and then later three weeks of continuous rain. Thirdly recognise that locally grown naturalised plants and trees are often easier to establish than plants imported from the greenhouses of northern Europe or the tropics

in many areas. I therefore recommend that you plant up the less thirsty plants listed in the book ‘How to use less water in your garden’ . Naturally all new plants will need watering until they are established but they will put down the important deep tap roots quicker if you water deep once or twice a week rather than shallowly twice a day.

4. Grow fruit and vegetables from day one.

Spain is a wonderful country in which to grow fruit and vegetables. So plant a few fruit trees and bushes and start a vegetable plot as early as possible. Your garden may take years to complete - especially if you are not planning to live in Spain all the year round - so ensure that you have healthy organically grown home produce to eat while you are progressing the rest of the garden. The book ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean style’ describes the history of our garden and how we progressed towards an ecological Mediterranean diet. One thing you will be surprised by when you first arrive in Spain is that in many areas it is difficult to buy organic vegetables as most are exported to the UK and other northern European countries.

7. Don’t work in the midday sun!

Straw hats and siestas are essential to happy and healthy gardening in Spain.

5. Recognise that water is a valuable resource.

The urbanisation of the coastal areas of Spain is putting unprecedented pressure on water supplies. As a result summer water restrictions and increased prices are becoming the norm

6. Use ergonomic tools.

You will soon find that a Spanish collection of short and long handled mattocks are less muscle straining than a full sized fork or spade and hand trowels and forks in Spanish soils.

I hope that the above thought help you make a productive start with the development of an enviable garden of Eden in Spain.

Not enough love

DAILY, I find myself saying that there is not enough love in the World. As events globally go hand in hand with a distinct lack of care, I can’t help but to think that so much love has already departed our lives, and that something has to be done. But what? We as spiritual people know that love is our goal and our motivation, but we are facing so much negativity in each and every direction. The various crises of the World are spilled out, as in this, the Modern Age, we have refugees dying in the back of lorries, children dying from having to drink infected water and people being stoned to death, beheaded and flung from buildings. Every twenty seconds a child goes missing and paedophilia rocks World religions and care organisations, as the sins of the pasts of many are revealed. Satanism is now rising too as a religion and Churches are empty on a Sunday. It’s a crazy mixed up World, but it is getting worse and not better. Social media allows for teenagers to take their own lives because of internet trolling and scarcely does a week past without someone running amok with a gun, shooting to kill. With the desecration of ancient temples in Syria and bombings in Thailand, death is cheap and murders ever increasing.

You may blame it all on the pressures of living in this World, but you don’t have to look too far to see what is happening Worldwide and to realise that we are going sadly wrong. When I left the UK to come to Spain to live, some twenty one years ago there was no such thing as road rage here in Spain. Today if you just take a little look around you there is grave evidence that stress and strain and a lack of politeness alone, now daily affects our car journeys here around the Costa. People do not seem to have the time to spend with other people because of a variety of reasons; let alone passing on any loving care on the way. Families can no longer pull together to help ailing and aged relatives.

Neighbours very often aren’t neighbours really any more. It is a dog eat dog World.

Spiritualism cannot work enough magic to resolve and counsel every wrong and to be able to make it right. We know that this life is a big test, and that however difficult it may get, that we have an absolute promise that our time on Earth may see us sorely tested. We can cope with that rather better than some people may be able to do. Is it because we are a soft touch? Well, no, I don’t think so, and part of our strength is made even stronger by our determination; a realisation that we are making our journey of life, and that we may fall over on the way, and the promise that comes with our subsequent reincarnation after death, if we choose for it.

I am asked where are the Angels that the World should see such unnecessary pain and conflict, where the unjust survive and the innocent can be slain. This I would answer in saying that I couldn’t imagine what it would be like if we didn’t have angelic assistance because things may be a lot worse. Dominion Angels that take responsibility for whole Countries and Territories must be tearing their feathers out of their wings because we are burdening them with our own responsibilities, by not all pulling together and bringing tender loving care back onto the menu. The Archangels, who each have the divine dispensation to visit Earth, must be working long shifts too, to get through the backlog. Things get passed over because priorities have to be adhered to. We cannot wait for all solutions to come from other sources, and taking responsibility is the keynote of care in a World that should never forget that we are all here on Earth for a purpose, known or unknown. We walk together the pathway of peace that serves to do its very best to protect us, and hopefully, it always will.

She comes to me with her arms wide open and I never seem to know what she wants me to do. We weren’t close while she was alive, but I want to do the right thing to help her if she needs me for something? Brenda C. Brenda, thanks for your mail. Spirit often appear with their arms wide open to show that they have no need for attachment and that they are free of pain. Your Aunt probably thinks that, since you have spiritual energies, that she can come to you. Maybe the rest of the family does not have such spiritual faith? Her presence is to let you know that she has survived and is in the Spirit World, presumably wanting you to pass the message on.

Travel to Galicia with APASA

JAVEA ANIMAL charity APASA has organised an excursion to the beautiful sights of Galicia from Monday 12th October to Sunday 18th October.

Dreading the new term I am about to start University and live away from home for the first time. None of my friends from college are going to the same Uni, so I won’t have anyone to go around with. I am quite a shy person, and don’t make friends easily. I am dreading the new term.

You are starting a new chapter of your life, and it will be a big change. I am sure you have started new terms at school in the past, and had the same sort of feelings. During Freshers week there will be many social activities. If you are staying in Halls, you will have the opportunity to pal up with your room mates.

Be brave, and be the first to make a move and start up a conversation with someone. You may not realise, but most people will be feeling the same as you, and will welcome someone to talk to, and go around with.

Too strict

I brought up my daughters to strictly follow my example regarding cleanliness, and keeping the house tidy. My eldest has recently left home and I am shocked to discover that she is quite slovenly when it comes to housekeeping in her own house. When she was at home, she was very tidy, as she knew what was expected of her. Now she is the exact opposite. Dishes regularly go unwashed, and she doesn’t change her sheets every week. I instilled all these things and more, into both my daughters, and feel I have wasted my time. Should I say something?

I am wondering if it is possible that you have been too forceful in your approach to teaching your daughters responsibility. If you come down too hard on children, it can sometimes have the opposite effect, and make them rebel against any conditioning.

Your daughter has just left home for the first time, and is still adjusting to a new situation.

Any cajoling may be unwelcome, and come across as interfering.

Segovia & Salamanca ALONGSIDE THE mountains of central Spain and only a fairly short drive from the Capital city of Madrid are three of the most outstanding cities of Spain.

TRAVELLING TO our city centre hotel based in the beautiful Segovia we arrive in time for you to start your explorations by enjoying an evening meal in one of its many restaurants, possibly trying the cochinillo (suckling pig), for which Segovia is famous.

Segovia is built on a rock, this city has the appearance of a ship sailing between the mountain ranges. The ships bough formed by the fairytale castle sitting right at the front peak of the rock and overlooking a valley cut out by two rivers, Eresmas and Clamores. This medieval marvel has looked over the valley for centuries. Its rooms are filled with souvenirs of a fascinating past which include some of the most important people in Spanish history. Statutes and paintings which amount to a gallery of who’s who in medieval Spain, fill large grey walled rooms. While the castles location offers magnificent views over the well irrigated landscape which tumbles down to the burbling water of the two rivers. The massive cathedral, situated in the centre of the rock provides the sail for our ship. Sitting alongside a town square where people watching could become addictive, some time should be given to the interior of this stunning building. But even before you reach any of this, you are confronted with the most magnificent entry gate to any city anywhere in the world. The Segovia Roman Aquaduct. This 92 feet high, 2,883 feet long marvel of Roman architecture has stood in its present position, welcoming visitors to the town for over 2,000 years. A sight once seen, never to be forgotten.

This is central Spain at its memorable best.

After a day of rest and discovery of Segovia, day 3 takes us to Salamanca which orbits round the largest Plaza Mayor in the country. In spring time storks circle over head and nest in the upper extremities of the attractive buildings which form the borders of a square, which provides a meeting, eating and drinking centre for locals and tourists alike.

Uniquely, Salamanca boasts not one, but two universities and again uniquely two cathedrals. The unusual gold coloured stone used to construct the buildings glinting in the late evening sunshine, and taken from a nearby quarry, can be seen from a long way off across the flat planes surrounding

the town. Boat rides are offered on the ample waters of the river Tormes which is straddled by a Roman bridge.

Reminding us that not only the Romans, but before them the Carthaginians, and after them the Moors and then the Christian Monarchs ruled this land. A day in Salamanca opens the door to ancient Spanish culture mingling with the energy of young Spain. Many young people fill the Plaza Mayor, the streets and the cafes.

These are young people who come here from all over the world to study in the world famous universities of a town of great character which has over the centuries, marked its place in history as an outstanding centre of learning. On our way back to the hotel it would be silly to pass by the historic city of Avila without taking a quick stop.

Avila, is famed for almost perfect medieval city walls. Storks nesting in the turrets of the walls add to the excitement of a visit to the fabulously historical city.

Inside the walls once gathered the “Knights of Avila” giving faithful service to the Christian monarchs in their battle against the Muslim Moors. Now cobbled streets lead you past ancient Celtic sculptures to the massive old cathedral.

Our final day gives us a short morning visit to Madrid, where the capital city has many different aspects for you to enjoy with time for lunch before making our way back to our original destination.

With Downton Abbey now off our screens it’s rumoured that ITV are considering bringing back the much revered ´Cold Feet´ to fill the gap. The show ran for 5 series from ´98 to ´03 and was ´must viewing´ with its rich blend of characters playing a group of 30 something couples living in Manchester.

Filming could begin early next year and, if so, the new series will be ready to go by next spring.

Its old news that Tom Jones was axed from The Voice last month, and it’s extremely bad news that it’s taken the BBC all this time to speak out on the matter. The Welsh singer is a genuine icon in the business, and having been a judge on the talent show since it began in 2012, it’s nothing short of a disgrace that he was dumped in such an unholy manner.

Tom didn´t hold back at the time of the axing, and here we are four weeks later with BBC’s director of television Danny Cohen saying “I’ve got huge respect for Tom and I’m truly sorry he’s upset, because I am a big fan of his, I think he’s a gentleman, I think (I think!) he’s an extraordinary figure in music and you’ll have seen the huge respect all of the artists had for him on ‘The Voice’ throughout. “Apart from the late hour Danny boy, your choice of words comes across as the biggest load of old schmaltz I´ve heard in a long time. Then just when you think this debacle couldn’t get any worse Tom´s replacement Boy George is on record as saying in 2013 “The Voice! it’s a TV show and these pointless vocal battles are proof that it’s nothing to do with creativity or growing! It’s drama!”

Tom Jones had quite some start in the business making No1 with his first release ´It’s Not Unusual´ in 1965, and fearlessly going on to record across the genres of pop, rock, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, soul, and gospel, and selling over 100 million records along the way.

After finishing his rant on Facebook Tom added “Having been through plenty of transformations throughout the years, I support and admire creative change, but being informed as a matter of duty and respect is an important part of creative relationships.” Right on TJ!

Ben Fogle, he of BBC´s reality show in Castaway 2000, could well dispel that illusion as he´s hot on the trail of the Great White Shark which has apparently has been spotted off Land´s End. Ben might not be too welcome by the landladies of the Grand Duchy.

Louis baby got his name in the papers on the back of saying “it is going to be a 5 year break! All the greats did it; it’s the best way to go out when you go out on a high and they´ve been phenomenal!” What is he talking about?

With so much good music coming through in the 80´s on the back of keyboards becoming a featured instrument, it’s interesting to discover that in a poll carried out of the 200 best songs of the decade, Prince and the Revolution´s ´Purple Rain´ a guitar orientated song made it to No1. I´m sure there´s copious amounts of you screaming your heads off at such a decision, but that’s the beauty of music, it’s all in the ear of the beholder.

RAZZLE, DAZZLE’N’DANCE, takes place tomorrow, September 5th.

IT’S THE first show of its kind at Restaurant Los Rosales in Guardamar. The evening starts with a beautiful flamenco ballet provided by Joseluis Balboa and his partner Esperanza. The couple are accomplished dancers and teach others the art of flamenco. The music continues all night long with the very popular Robert Bonovox. Smartphone troubles

Hi Aunty, Can you help with a problem I am having with my smartphone - a Samsung Core. Every time I go into Google or Chrome search I am constantly getting unwanted ads, this has suddenly started to happen.

Have tried everything to get rid of this but am now at a loss at what else to do! Can you help with this problem at all. Many thanks, Andrea Aunty says: It sounds like your pop up blocker on Chrome is not set up correctly. Open up the Android / Chrome browser. Click the three dots menu icon you can see in the top righthand corner. Choose ‘Settings’ from the list. Now select ‘Advanced’ from the menu that appears. Ensure that ‘Block pop-ups’ is enabled. And now you shouldn’t ever see a pop-up ad on your Android smartphone when you use the Android browser.

Eliminating the problem Hi Aunty Virus, For about three weeks I have had this displayed on my screen when I run up. There is a problem starting Windows:\Systen32\\nvpcap64.dll The specified module could not be found. I have been on to Google to see if I could trace and eliminate the problem, but each thing that I try still leaves me with the same problem when I run up again. Please can you advise. It appears from a few people who have also had this issue that an uninstall and reinstall of your graphics drivers should cure the problem.

PC keeps freezing when sending attachments Hi Aunty, The problem I am having is when I click onto the attachment I wish to send the pc freezes. This has only started to happen in the past few days. Can you help. PJ

Aunty says: It may be that the file association for that attachment, which tells Windows what program to use to open that attachment, is not set up correctly. If not set up, Windows can freeze as it simply does not know what program to use to open up the attachment. Now what program you use to open that attachment, depends on the type of attachment. If you save the attachment to your PC, and then right click on the attachment, and then “Open With”, you can then choose which program to open that attachment up in. If you are having issues with sending attachment, well that depends on many things, like what email system you are trying to send the attachment on, your antivirus system may be blocking that type of attachment. If you are using Internet Explorer for your Outlook / Hotmail emails, perhaps using another browser like Chrome can solve the problem.

for the Translation of text Not Vicar’s Wife! and commentary Last week’s article ended with a short text in Spanish and I have actually bumped into a few people since then who told me they enjoyed translating it but were unsure of a few details, so without further ado here is the text and the translation below.

“Cuando yo era niña jugaba todos los días en el parque con mis amigas. Tenía un perro y me gustaba mucho andar con él a la playa. Mi madre cocinaba al mediodía y yo siempre volvía a casa para comer. La verdad es que nunca comía muy bien y mi madre se enfadaba mucho conmigo. No veía mucha televisión porque había pocos programas para niños y además pasaba mucho tiempo en la calle.

Mi padre trabajaba hasta tarde y cuando volvía a casa por la noche me sentaba con él para contarle mis cosas. Mientras tanto mi madre recogía la cocina y preparaba todo para el día siguiente. Siempre iba a la cama a la misma hora y leía un libro debajo de las mantas antes de dormir. Mi hermana dormía en el mismo dormitorio pero normalmente no la oía entrar porque ya estaba durmiendo profundamente.”

“When I was a little girl I used to play in the park with my friends every day. I had a dog and I used to like walking with it (him) to the beach. My mother cooked at midday and I always went back home for lunch. The truth is that I never ate very well and my mother used to get very angry with me.

I didn’t watch much television because there weren’t many programmes for children and anyway (furthermore) I spent a lot of time in the street.

My father worked until late and when he came home at night I used to sit with him and tell him about my things. Meanwhile

my mother would tidy up the kitchen and prepare everything for the next day. I always went to bed at the same time and used to read a book underneath the blankets before sleeping.

My sister slept in the same bedroom but I didn’t usually hear her come in because I would already be fast asleep.”

Well, I’m sure you got the sense of all of that, but those of you who wrote it out probably found that you phrased things slightly differently here and there. This is exactly as it should be because a big part of translation is interpreting or thinking “How would we say that in English?” Actually, if I had written it in English in the first place I would probably have expressed quite a few things differently.

Another thing you might be interested to notice is the different ways of translating the tense we have been studying.

Sometimes I have said “I used to go”, other times “I went” and still other times using the word “would” as in “my mother would tidy up”. All three forms in English communicate the same idea of past description and sometimes the variation between them is as much to do with “style” as anything else.

This is what makes this particular tense a little tricky if we are worried about word-for-word translations, but also perhaps might give you an insight into how much harder English is to learn for foreigners. How would you explain to a Spanish person learning English when to use “I used to go”, “I went” and “I would go” ?!

There are quite a few other points of interest here, but first and foremost I wanted to illustrate the use of the past continuous tense in a real context, so hopefully that has been achieved! See you next week.

Rescue centre supporter wins gold at Special Olympics World Games A young British equestrian who spends her summers riding at Rojales’s Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has won three gold medals at the Los Angeles Special Olympics World Games.

by Patricia Thompson Georgina Maton, 25, was part of Great Britain’s squad of more than 100 athletes with learning disabilities and competed against 170 other countries in the 2015 World Games from July 25 to August 2.

Georgina took out gold in equitation, dressage and working trail.

“I find lots of things hard and have had some difficult times in my life like school, but I understand horses – and they

don’t judge me,” she said.

Georgina, who has been riding since age five, is a strong supporter of the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre after riding there while her family vacationed in Spain about seven years ago.

“Georgina used to love riding in Spain to get her ‘horse fix’ – excellent training for riding in the heat of LA!” her mother, Barbara Maton, said.

Speaking from LA, Georgina praised the rescue centre for its important animal welfare work.

“The staff are friendly and the horses are relaxed,well cared for and enjoy their environment. I’m happy they stop people mistreating horses and care for them,” Georgina said.

The rescue centre, which relies solely on donations to fund its work, now houses more than

90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from terrible situations of abuse and neglect.

Volunteers are desperately needed to keep its network of eight charity stores open, especially in the Pilar de la Horadada shop. Those interested in volunteering to work in the shops can call co-founder Sue Weeding on 652 021 980.

Donations of large items such as furniture are also sought, and a

pick-up service can be arranged to collect them from your house. Each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased from the charity store.

Caring for the vision of the smallest members of the family

STUDIES SHOW that at least 20% of children have unidentified visual problems, which is why ophthalmologists recommend regular eye tests for children from an early age until 18.

GLOBAL OPTICAL group Specsavers Opticas are advising that before the school year begins, all children should have an eye test to ensure that any problems are identified and rectified before they start to affect their lives. This is crucial as in the early stages of learning more than 80% of the learning process relies on vision.

“Most very young children have their eyesight assessed as part of their routine developmental checks. While these are very important, it is recommended to have a thorough, complete eye test by a qualified optician. So we recommend that your child should have their first eye test at an early age.” explains Francisco Manuel Jurado, Director of Specsavers Opticas in Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja.

“Testing before your son or daughter goes into full-time education means that any problems they may have are identified early, setting them up for a happy and fulfilling

school life. That’s because not being able to see clearly can be confusing in a busy classroom. Poor eyesight can cause learning and behavioural problems, which might be blamed on other things. This is especially true for young children, who may find it difficult to explain the difficulties they are having with their eyesight. They may not even be aware they have a problem at all. And of course, the sooner vision problems are detected, the better the outcome. Conditions such as squint and amblyopia (‘lazy eye’) can be treated more effectively if they are picked up early and referred to a Specialist. And that could make a huge difference to your child.”

As part of their commitment to children’s eye sight, Specsavers Opticas in Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura have been supporting Fundación Arcos del Castillo for over a year, by providing free eye tests and glasses for children in their care. To date they have been able to provide many free eye tests for children from the charity’s centres in Elche and Murcia, and supplied over 50 pairs of free glasses. The charity explains; “This help is crucial for the young people we help in our centres, as the majority come from families who are unable to afford glasses, and each year the number of visual problems amongst these vulnerable children is increasing.”

Gestational Diabetes:Part 1

Gestational diabetes is a condition that is exclusive to pregnancy.

It affects up to 18 in 100 women giving birth in the U.K.

Normally, the amount of glucose in the blood is controlled by a hormone called insulin.

However, during pregnancy, some women develop higher than normal levels of glucose in their blood, which insulin can’t bring under control.

Gestational diabetes usually develops in the third trimester and usually disappears after the baby is born. Although unrelated to Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, women who develop gestational diabetes are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life.

Who is most at risk?

You have had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy.

You have a strong family history of diabetes You are obese You have previously given birth to a big baby (4kgs or over) You have suffered an unexplained stillbirth You’ve given birth to a baby with a birth defect You have high blood pressure You are over 35 Signs, symptoms and diagnosis More often than not there are no symptoms. However, the following may be noticed: a dry mouth with increased thirst needing to urinate frequently, especially at night unexplained tiredness recurrent infections, such as thrush (a yeast infection) blurred vision Routine ante-natal examinations may reveal glucose in your urine or excessive weight gain which may lead your Midwife to test further for gestational diabetes.

If you are at increased risk of gestational diabetes you will be offered a special glucose tolerance test during weeks 24-28 of pregnancy.

Loftus Trophy The Loftus competition was started in memory of Beryl & Terry Loftus who were early members of the club and whose family have donated the trophy. The competition is open to BBC members who have been bowling for less than two years. The competition is huge fun and this year there will be harmony in the Bouttell household will Angela & Dave Bouttell both winning a cup - however Angela was the overall winner!!! Our picture shows the whole squad of up and coming newbies, with Angela & Dave centre stage.

On the night before the match, we had a big storm coming through, with more lightning hits and thunderclaps than I have ever seen or heard in my life. I expected the course to be flooded, but today presented itself as a lovely day for golf, with a great course at Oliva, and in prime condition with good greens, and both greens and fairways running fairly fast.

We had four guests today, and we were delighted with this, and they were Barry Carter, Jason Webb, Terry Oram and Neil Ewell.

We did have a visitor’s prize today, and that was won by Jason Webb with 33 Points.

Peugeot 5008 MPV TRANSPORTING SEVEN people in comfort can present a problem, unless of course you don’t mind Transit vans.

PEUGEOT HAS a solution though in its 5008 MPV (multipurpose vehicle). Unlike the earlier Peugeot 807 people carrier the 5008 is more compact, making it more enjoyable to drive but this does mean that if there are seven passengers there’s not a huge amount of room for luggage. Importantly for the driver it’s not too difficult to reverse or manoeuvre.

This style of vehicle is quite van-like in terms of appearance but it is very much like a car to drive and driver appeal is one of the advantages of the Peugeot. The test model, a two-litre diesel Allure – top-of-the-range - is equipped with a six-speed automatic gearbox but it can also be driven like a manual. At low speeds, typically up hill, this gearbox is a little indecisive, not sure whether to go for third gear or second, which does make for the occasional uncomfortable jolt. It is quite frugal for a vehicle of its size, returning over 40mpg on average.

I put it through its paces over a long weekend to Pembrokeshire where we experienced a variety of roads.

On the motorway (the M4, over the Severn Bridge) it was very capable, happily cruising at 70mph, even though it was heavily laden with five passengers and luggage. Cruise control

makes life so much easier on such travels and the electric child lock engaged by the click of a switch on the driver’s door is easy to operate.

The one-way streets, invariably up sharp inclines in this part of the world, certainly cause the tired motorist some confusion but thank goodness I’m driving the 5008 because the auto box makes light work of the hills. I’m not usually a fan of electronic handbrakes but the one fitted to this vehicle is quick and simple to engage and disengage.

Inside, the Allure benefits from an enormous panoramic glass roof (with electric sliding cover), which makes the vehicle really light and airy as you can see in the video at testdrives. biz. The front passengers get captain style seats with pull down armrests that can be adjusted to the desired height.

The driver’s seat is certainly comfortable, hardwearing and supportive although I do find that when my daughter’s baby seat is in place behind I cannot push my seat back quite as far as I might desire. There are all the gadgets the modern day

motorist could dream of including sat nav, a useful head-up display showing the speed and ensuring the driver doesn’t take their eyes off the road. Air conditioning and a good quality sound system are all part of the package.
